Welcome to "The Books of the Book." 00:00:22.02\00:00:23.74 The program that focuses on a deep Bible study 00:00:23.77\00:00:26.10 of the word of God. 00:00:26.13\00:00:27.50 will be taking a closer look at 1 Peter. 00:00:27.53\00:00:30.32 Bring out your Bibles, so you can join us 00:00:30.35\00:00:31.81 in this very interesting study. 00:00:31.84\00:00:33.98 And with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:34.01\00:00:35.78 He's a professor at the theological seminary 00:00:35.81\00:00:38.42 at Andrews university. Dr. Sheppard, welcome. 00:00:38.45\00:00:42.21 Before we begin our study I want to ask you this question 00:00:42.24\00:00:45.02 that I've been willing to ask you. 00:00:45.05\00:00:47.71 What's with the bow ties? Is there a story behind that? 00:00:47.74\00:00:52.31 I just started wearing bow ties probably 00:00:52.34\00:00:54.70 about 10 or 15 years ago-- kind of a personal signature 00:00:54.73\00:00:59.26 and sure enough I'm known as 00:00:59.29\00:01:01.44 the professor who wears bow ties. 00:01:01.47\00:01:03.61 If they say, "Oh, you have a class with Shepherd? 00:01:03.64\00:01:05.03 Shepherd, who is he?" "The one that wears bow ties." 00:01:05.06\00:01:07.69 Immediately, they know who I am. 00:01:07.72\00:01:09.13 The bow tie guy. The bow tie guy. 00:01:09.16\00:01:11.58 Well, what are we studying today? 00:01:11.61\00:01:13.53 What passage we would be looking at? 00:01:13.56\00:01:14.93 We'll be looking at 1 Peter 1:10-12 00:01:14.96\00:01:17.62 We should turn right there and get into the word of God. 00:01:17.65\00:01:20.38 1 Peter 1:10-12. This is what it says, 00:01:20.41\00:01:24.58 "Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied 00:01:24.61\00:01:28.66 about the grace that was to be yours searched 00:01:28.69\00:01:31.36 and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time 00:01:31.39\00:01:35.01 the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted 00:01:35.04\00:01:38.25 the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 00:01:38.28\00:01:42.02 It was revealed to them that they were not serving 00:01:42.05\00:01:44.72 not themselves but you, in the things that have now been 00:01:44.75\00:01:48.82 announced to you through those who preached the good news 00:01:48.85\00:01:51.24 to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, 00:01:51.27\00:01:53.52 things into which angels long to look." 00:01:53.55\00:01:56.81 Okay. Now how do these verses link up 00:01:56.84\00:01:59.13 with what we've been talking about before? 00:01:59.16\00:02:01.26 All right. So we started our study 00:02:01.29\00:02:03.44 with the first couple verses and we found 00:02:03.47\00:02:06.10 that the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:02:06.13\00:02:08.71 Actually, it says the Father, the Spirit, 00:02:08.74\00:02:10.56 and the Son are working for our salvation to draw us 00:02:10.59\00:02:14.11 to God that they have created a covenant with us. 00:02:14.14\00:02:19.45 That harks back to the Old Testament covenant 00:02:19.48\00:02:22.54 idea of the people of God with Him 00:02:22.57\00:02:26.06 at Mount Sinai that links them up. 00:02:26.09\00:02:29.21 Then He unpacks this through a description of the blessings 00:02:29.24\00:02:34.55 of rebirth where he talks about our past 00:02:34.58\00:02:39.48 and then the experience of the hope and the inheritance 00:02:39.51\00:02:44.65 and salvation that talks about our future. 00:02:44.68\00:02:48.89 It might be good to see that link to the Old Testament. 00:02:48.92\00:02:52.06 If we turn to Exodus 24:3-8, we can see some of that language 00:02:52.09\00:02:57.13 that we've been talking about all along. 00:02:57.16\00:02:59.69 Exodus 24:3-8. 00:02:59.72\00:03:05.68 I guess, I can read it. Yeah. 00:03:05.71\00:03:07.08 "So Moses came and told the people all the words 00:03:07.11\00:03:09.58 of the Lord and all the judgments. 00:03:09.61\00:03:11.56 And all the people answered with one voice and said, 00:03:11.59\00:03:13.99 "All the words which the Lord has said we will do." 00:03:14.02\00:03:17.24 And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord. 00:03:17.27\00:03:22.09 And he rose early in the morning, 00:03:22.12\00:03:23.82 and built an altar at the foot of the mountains, 00:03:23.85\00:03:26.50 and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 00:03:26.53\00:03:30.15 Then he sent young men of the children of Israel, 00:03:30.18\00:03:34.73 who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings 00:03:34.76\00:03:38.43 of oxen to the Lord. 00:03:38.46\00:03:40.35 And Moses took half the blood and put it in basins 00:03:40.38\00:03:44.06 and half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 00:03:44.09\00:03:47.20 Then he took the Book of the Covenant 00:03:47.23\00:03:49.67 and read in the hearing of the people. 00:03:49.70\00:03:53.54 And they said, "All that the Lord has said we will do, 00:03:53.57\00:03:57.52 and be obedient." 00:03:57.55\00:03:59.80 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, 00:03:59.83\00:04:03.33 and said, "This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord 00:04:03.36\00:04:07.48 has made with you according to all these words."" 00:04:07.51\00:04:11.31 Okay. Now this is exactly the same kind of idea 00:04:11.34\00:04:14.68 that we have in the Book of 1 Peter Chapter 1 verse 2 00:04:14.71\00:04:20.63 where it talks about the foreknowledge 00:04:20.66\00:04:22.42 of God the Father, the sanctification of the Spirit, 00:04:22.45\00:04:24.82 for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling with his blood. 00:04:24.85\00:04:29.28 Obedience and sprinkling. 00:04:29.31\00:04:30.68 We think those are mixed up, that those are backwards. 00:04:30.71\00:04:32.77 But if you go back to that story in Exodus 24, 00:04:32.80\00:04:36.15 first Moses goes, God sends him down 00:04:36.18\00:04:39.73 with the words and the people say, 00:04:39.76\00:04:41.28 "All the Lord has said, we will do." 00:04:41.31\00:04:43.34 They say they will obey. 00:04:43.37\00:04:44.92 And then they're sprinkled with the blood of the covenant. 00:04:44.95\00:04:47.33 They have agreed to be God's covenant people, all right. 00:04:47.36\00:04:51.73 Now, of course, we know that they failed to obey 00:04:51.76\00:04:54.88 and that actually broke the covenant 00:04:54.91\00:04:57.17 and then it had to be restored through God's grace to them. 00:04:57.20\00:05:02.75 So some people get the idea that, 00:05:02.78\00:05:05.04 "Oh, you got the wrong idea of obediency or something" 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.68 that this is entering into a covenant with God, 00:05:07.71\00:05:11.20 a new relationship with God, 00:05:11.23\00:05:13.00 the rebirth experience now empowers us. 00:05:13.03\00:05:15.74 Okay. So that brings us to this passage. 00:05:15.77\00:05:18.38 The first passage talked about God the Father 00:05:18.41\00:05:22.88 'cause he said, "Blessed be God the Father 00:05:22.91\00:05:26.08 of our Lord Jesus Christ!" Who has done all these things, 00:05:26.11\00:05:28.54 given us hope and everything. 00:05:28.57\00:05:30.12 And when we came to verse 6 00:05:30.15\00:05:34.15 and onwards he says, "In this you rejoice." 00:05:34.18\00:05:37.14 And he talks about in verse 8, "Though you have not seen him." 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.94 You have not seen Jesus. Okay. "You love him. 00:05:40.97\00:05:44.41 Though you do not now see him, you believe in him 00:05:44.44\00:05:46.75 and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible 00:05:46.78\00:05:48.70 and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome 00:05:48.73\00:05:51.15 of your faith, the salvation of your souls." 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.03 So he's talked about God the father and His role. 00:05:53.06\00:05:56.12 He's talked about Jesus and His role. 00:05:56.15\00:05:58.35 Then he comes to our passage here where he talks 00:05:58.38\00:06:00.36 about the Holy Spirit and the role of the Spirit. 00:06:00.40\00:06:02.85 So that's how this passage fits into and goes before. 00:06:02.88\00:06:08.47 And what is the sanctification of the Spirit all about? 00:06:08.50\00:06:13.02 Okay. There are different meanings. 00:06:13.05\00:06:16.06 We've already said some about this of the word sanctification. 00:06:16.09\00:06:19.70 Some people will say sanctification 00:06:19.73\00:06:22.00 is the work of a life time. 00:06:22.03\00:06:23.70 That's the purifying work of God's Spirit 00:06:23.73\00:06:25.80 that works in our lives, all through life. 00:06:25.83\00:06:28.31 There's another sentence for sanctification 00:06:28.34\00:06:29.83 is the act of a moment. 00:06:29.86\00:06:31.35 That's where you are set apart for God to be His people, 00:06:31.38\00:06:36.86 to belong to Him. 00:06:36.89\00:06:38.89 But in Peter, this idea of sanctification, 00:06:38.92\00:06:42.01 I would say is rather holistic. 00:06:42.04\00:06:44.14 It kind of puts it all together. It links it all together. 00:06:44.17\00:06:48.98 It cannot separate it out. 00:06:49.01\00:06:52.90 Salvation is not only the accepting of Christ 00:06:52.93\00:06:57.00 but also the living for Christ idea, 00:06:57.03\00:07:01.08 looking forward to His return. 00:07:01.11\00:07:03.76 So it's the new experience of the new birth, 00:07:03.79\00:07:07.42 it's also living for Him and it's particularly 00:07:07.45\00:07:10.81 looking forward to His return. 00:07:10.84\00:07:13.18 So it's especially focused on the end, the idea of salvation. 00:07:13.21\00:07:18.44 But this passage here that we just read 10 through 12 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.50 doesn't seem to talk about sanctification by the Spirit. 00:07:21.53\00:07:25.34 Why is that? Yeah. That's really interesting. 00:07:25.37\00:07:27.33 You know, it talks a lot about the Revelation, doesn't it? 00:07:27.36\00:07:31.11 That they received. And so you think in your mind, 00:07:31.14\00:07:33.98 "Well, wait a minute, 00:07:34.01\00:07:35.38 I thought this was all about sanctification. 00:07:35.41\00:07:37.01 Why does it emphasize so much about 00:07:37.04\00:07:39.54 the giving of the Revelation, the word of God? Why is that?" 00:07:39.57\00:07:42.68 Well, that's because of the role that the word of God 00:07:42.71\00:07:46.62 that the Spirit gives, the role that the word 00:07:46.65\00:07:49.16 of God has in sanctification. 00:07:49.19\00:07:52.91 So there's a passage that we can look at 00:07:52.94\00:07:55.60 that can help us to understand this a bit. 00:07:55.63\00:07:58.44 Ephesians 5:25 and 26. 00:07:58.47\00:08:04.13 Ephesians 5:25 and 26. 00:08:04.16\00:08:11.20 I teach students at the seminary how to read the Bible aloud 00:08:11.23\00:08:15.26 and how to talk about the scripture. 00:08:15.29\00:08:20.26 I tell them they should always list 00:08:20.29\00:08:22.24 the reference to the scripture three times. 00:08:22.27\00:08:25.05 Before they read it? Yep. 00:08:25.08\00:08:26.45 And when you're giving a sermon, 00:08:26.48\00:08:27.85 it's always good to read it three times. 00:08:27.88\00:08:29.50 Is there a purpose to that? What? Is there a purpose to 00:08:29.53\00:08:32.48 making a reference? There is. There definitely 00:08:32.51\00:08:33.88 is a purpose to that. 00:08:33.91\00:08:35.28 That's because you want people to bring their Bible to church 00:08:35.31\00:08:37.30 and you want them to open the Bible. Okay. 00:08:37.33\00:08:39.48 So that they not only hear it but they see the word of God. 00:08:39.51\00:08:43.85 See, and actually if you watch great evangelists like 00:08:43.88\00:08:47.76 "Mark Finley", he invariably 00:08:47.79\00:08:50.27 will reference it three times. Really? 00:08:50.30\00:08:52.04 Yep. He'll say quickly twice, then he'll tell a little story 00:08:52.07\00:08:54.84 or something and then he'll say it again and then he'll read it. 00:08:54.87\00:08:57.07 So here we go third time. Ephesians 5:25 and 26. 00:08:57.10\00:09:00.92 "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved 00:09:00.95\00:09:04.86 the church and gave Himself for her, 00:09:04.89\00:09:07.51 that He might sanctify and cleanse her 00:09:07.54\00:09:10.42 with the washing of water by the word." 00:09:10.45\00:09:13.74 Okay. Mine says, "The washing 00:09:13.77\00:09:15.65 of water with the word." Okay. 00:09:15.68\00:09:18.47 Now he's talking about Christian marriage 00:09:18.50\00:09:21.38 but he's also talking about Christian life in the church. 00:09:21.41\00:09:24.86 Because he said that Christ is the head of the church. 00:09:24.89\00:09:29.78 His body and He's the savior that's back in verse 23 00:09:29.81\00:09:34.27 and as the Christ submits to the church, 00:09:34.30\00:09:36.12 the wife is to submit to her husband. 00:09:36.15\00:09:37.78 So he talks about this relationship of husbands 00:09:37.81\00:09:41.21 and wives and he ties it all to the church. 00:09:41.24\00:09:44.27 And when he comes to this interesting passage 00:09:44.30\00:09:46.67 where he talks about husbands that they are 00:09:46.70\00:09:48.92 to love their wives, he says, "As Christ loved the church 00:09:48.95\00:09:52.84 and gave Himself for her that he might" 00:09:52.87\00:09:56.55 here is the term, "sanctify" her. All right. 00:09:56.58\00:10:00.20 Now how does He sanctify her? 00:10:00.23\00:10:02.71 Having cleansed her by the washing 00:10:02.74\00:10:05.72 of water with the word. 00:10:05.75\00:10:08.77 What does that sound like to you in Christian life? 00:10:08.80\00:10:13.11 Well, it sounds of a, I don't know, 00:10:13.14\00:10:16.06 maybe you can help in better understanding. 00:10:16.09\00:10:18.04 Well, washing with water. Where do we use water? 00:10:18.07\00:10:21.35 Maybe like taking the shower. 00:10:21.38\00:10:23.44 Yeah, but in the Christian church, 00:10:23.47\00:10:25.61 we use water for--. Baptism? 00:10:25.64\00:10:27.04 Baptism. Okay. 00:10:27.07\00:10:28.44 Yeah, we use baptism. And when we baptize somebody, 00:10:28.47\00:10:30.53 we say "I baptize you in the name 00:10:30.56\00:10:31.93 of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." 00:10:31.96\00:10:34.83 Those are the words that are spoken. 00:10:34.86\00:10:37.14 The words of sanctification. 00:10:37.17\00:10:38.59 The words of them now being 00:10:38.62\00:10:40.87 dipped in water to experience that. 00:10:40.90\00:10:44.19 We can say baptism is their faith taking physical form. 00:10:44.22\00:10:52.19 It's a public testimony we say of their faith. 00:10:52.22\00:10:56.33 And here it is, it's the washing of water with the word. 00:10:56.36\00:11:02.42 When you're baptized, that's the washing of water. 00:11:02.45\00:11:07.77 It's like your sins are washed away. 00:11:07.80\00:11:12.07 We did some evangelistic meetings 00:11:12.10\00:11:13.47 in a little church where I go, it's the Clare Michigan church, 00:11:13.50\00:11:17.97 and the pastor, we did a Revelation seminar. 00:11:18.00\00:11:23.28 And we had about 30 to 50 people coming regularly 00:11:23.31\00:11:26.10 to the meetings, both church members 00:11:26.13\00:11:28.50 and people from the community. 00:11:28.53\00:11:30.53 And we had a baptism where we baptized someone 00:11:30.56\00:11:34.37 and we have people who are coming to church. 00:11:34.40\00:11:35.82 It is really exciting, you know, to see us having so many people 00:11:35.85\00:11:38.54 in the church were involved in this ministry together. 00:11:38.57\00:11:42.87 And that lady was just so, you know, 00:11:42.90\00:11:45.38 she was just so happy on the day of her baptism, 00:11:45.41\00:11:48.94 washing of water with the word of God. 00:11:48.97\00:11:52.62 So we go back to 1 Peter. 00:11:52.65\00:11:54.50 This is what we see happening is that there's all kinds 00:11:54.53\00:11:58.53 of reference to this word, this prophesy, 00:11:58.56\00:12:04.77 these phrases that are going on, you see, 00:12:04.80\00:12:07.58 concerning the salvation the prophets who prophesied 00:12:07.61\00:12:10.52 about the grace but, was to be yours, 00:12:10.55\00:12:13.98 searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time 00:12:14.01\00:12:17.38 the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted 00:12:17.41\00:12:21.14 the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 00:12:21.17\00:12:24.34 So it's a beautiful expression of this revelation. 00:12:24.37\00:12:30.43 So the revelation becomes the place, 00:12:30.46\00:12:33.11 the word of God is that which takes and cleanses our life. 00:12:33.14\00:12:38.15 If you're not reading the word of God on a daily basis, 00:12:38.18\00:12:43.17 your life just won't be as clean. 00:12:43.20\00:12:45.72 You won't have the same kind of, should I say closeness, 00:12:45.75\00:12:51.49 the feel of closeness to God. 00:12:51.52\00:12:54.42 Most people find the beginning of the day 00:12:54.45\00:12:56.15 as a great time to read the Bible. 00:12:56.18\00:12:57.92 Others, they'll do it in the middle 00:12:57.95\00:12:59.72 of the day or the end of the day. 00:12:59.75\00:13:01.12 Doesn't matter when. But we have to make sure 00:13:01.15\00:13:02.71 that we have that experience with the word of God. 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.57 Because it continues not just in baptism 00:13:05.60\00:13:08.04 that it washes us, but it continues 00:13:08.07\00:13:10.24 to wash us through our life experience. 00:13:10.27\00:13:13.64 Every day I open my Bible. See and the light shines up, 00:13:13.67\00:13:18.12 you know, helps to clean out 00:13:18.15\00:13:19.79 the cobwebs that too often get in there. 00:13:19.82\00:13:23.59 So reading it, memorizing it, sharing it, 00:13:23.62\00:13:28.16 this is the experience of salvation. 00:13:28.19\00:13:31.07 Well, Dr. Shepherd, thank you for these very insights. 00:13:31.10\00:13:34.10 Why don't we go ahead and take a moment here? 00:13:34.13\00:13:36.58 Take a brief break and then we'll be right back 00:13:36.61\00:13:38.97 after these short messages. 00:13:39.00\00:13:41.45
