Hello and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.78\00:00:25.14 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd, 00:00:25.17\00:00:29.26 he's currently a Professor 00:00:29.29\00:00:30.66 of New Testament Interpretation at Andrews University. 00:00:30.69\00:00:33.86 We are studying the writings of the Apostle Peter. 00:00:33.89\00:00:37.51 Dr. Shepherd, and the last time we were studying here, 00:00:37.54\00:00:41.20 we talked about how God chose us. 00:00:41.23\00:00:43.38 We didn't choose Him, He chose us. 00:00:43.41\00:00:45.20 And also how the Trinity God, the Father, the Son 00:00:45.23\00:00:48.63 and the Holy Spirit are working together to save us. 00:00:48.66\00:00:52.09 How does Peter unpack this? 00:00:52.12\00:00:54.13 All right, so let's turn to the Book of 1 Peter. 00:00:54.16\00:00:57.49 In these studies, we're gonna read through 00:00:57.52\00:01:00.23 the entire Book of 1 Peter and the entire Book of 2 Peter. 00:01:00.26\00:01:04.10 I tell people in when I teach Sabbath school, 00:01:04.13\00:01:07.33 if we do nothing else, we should open the Bible. 00:01:07.36\00:01:09.56 And we should read the word of God. 00:01:09.59\00:01:10.96 Okay. I think that's important. 00:01:10.99\00:01:12.36 So now we're gonna start in 1 Peter 1:3 through 9. 00:01:12.39\00:01:16.96 I'm reading the English Standard Version. 00:01:16.99\00:01:19.18 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! 00:01:19.21\00:01:23.22 According to his great mercy, he has caused us 00:01:23.25\00:01:26.28 to be born again to a living hope 00:01:26.31\00:01:29.54 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 00:01:29.57\00:01:32.96 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, 00:01:32.99\00:01:37.18 and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 00:01:37.21\00:01:41.53 who by God's power are being guarded through faith 00:01:41.56\00:01:44.73 for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 00:01:44.76\00:01:49.21 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, 00:01:49.24\00:01:52.84 if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 00:01:52.87\00:01:57.56 so that the tested genuineness of your faith, 00:01:57.59\00:02:00.90 more precious than gold that perishes 00:02:00.93\00:02:03.59 though it is tested by fire, 00:02:03.62\00:02:05.80 may be found to result in praise and glory 00:02:05.83\00:02:09.42 and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 00:02:09.45\00:02:12.98 Though you have not seen him, you love him. 00:02:13.01\00:02:16.46 Though you do not now see him, 00:02:16.49\00:02:18.67 you believe in him and rejoice with joy 00:02:18.70\00:02:20.93 that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 00:02:20.96\00:02:23.93 obtaining the outcome of your faith, 00:02:23.96\00:02:26.30 the salvation of your souls." 00:02:26.33\00:02:30.48 So we look at the beginning of this, 00:02:30.51\00:02:32.29 the very first word that Peter uses in verse 3 00:02:32.32\00:02:36.78 is the word "Blessed." 00:02:36.81\00:02:39.41 "Blessed be the God and father of our lord Jesus Christ!" 00:02:39.44\00:02:43.68 Now I don't know, it's funny at least in our church, 00:02:43.71\00:02:48.20 this isn't words that we usually say. 00:02:48.23\00:02:51.03 Blessed be God, you know. 00:02:51.06\00:02:54.35 What exactly is going on here, 00:02:54.38\00:02:57.94 it's actually an Old Testament way of talking. 00:02:57.97\00:03:01.94 The Hebrew term is berakah, the blessing. 00:03:01.97\00:03:05.48 And it was to praise God, 00:03:05.51\00:03:08.56 to praise God for blessings that you had received. 00:03:08.59\00:03:13.50 You thank Him because He gave you life. 00:03:13.53\00:03:15.85 You thank Him because He gave you family. 00:03:15.88\00:03:18.50 He created the world, 00:03:18.53\00:03:19.90 you know, there's all these different things. 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.30 They are praising God for the things that He has done. 00:03:21.33\00:03:24.56 Now the question is 00:03:24.59\00:03:27.48 what is the blessing that we have received? 00:03:27.51\00:03:29.80 What did you notice? 00:03:29.83\00:03:32.11 Well, "According to his abundant mercy 00:03:32.14\00:03:33.65 has begotten us again to a living hope 00:03:33.68\00:03:37.05 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." 00:03:37.08\00:03:39.59 Yeah. 00:03:39.62\00:03:40.99 Okay, so that's a new birth experience, isn't that? 00:03:41.02\00:03:45.99 It sounds like a new birth. Yeah, to be-- 00:03:46.02\00:03:48.01 "Begotten us again." To be born again. 00:03:48.04\00:03:51.42 It almost sounds like the conversation 00:03:51.45\00:03:52.91 Jesus had with Nicodemus. 00:03:52.94\00:03:54.49 Nicodemus, in fact, let's turn over there. 00:03:54.52\00:03:56.07 Okay. To John 3:3 to 8. 00:03:56.10\00:03:58.15 I read the first one, you read this one. 00:03:58.18\00:04:00.93 John 3:3 to 8. 00:04:00.96\00:04:05.11 "Jesus answered him and said to him, 00:04:05.14\00:04:06.58 "Most assuredly I say to you unless one is born again, 00:04:06.61\00:04:10.41 he cannot see the kingdom of God." 00:04:10.44\00:04:13.19 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man can be born 00:04:13.22\00:04:15.82 when he's old. 00:04:15.85\00:04:17.26 Can he enter a second time 00:04:17.29\00:04:18.90 into his mother's womb and be born?" 00:04:18.93\00:04:21.62 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly I say to you, 00:04:21.65\00:04:25.00 unless one is born of water and the Spirit, 00:04:25.03\00:04:28.25 he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 00:04:28.28\00:04:30.41 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, 00:04:30.44\00:04:33.28 and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. 00:04:33.31\00:04:36.44 Do not marvel that I say to you, 00:04:36.47\00:04:39.14 'You must be born again.' 00:04:39.17\00:04:40.94 The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it. 00:04:40.97\00:04:44.94 But cannot tell where it comes from 00:04:44.97\00:04:46.97 and where it goes. 00:04:47.00\00:04:48.37 So everyone who is born, so as everyone 00:04:48.40\00:04:51.24 who is born of the Spirit." 00:04:51.27\00:04:52.86 All right, now we don't have time to unpack all of this. 00:04:52.89\00:04:55.52 But this is interesting conversation 00:04:55.55\00:04:57.22 that Jesus had with Nicodemus. 00:04:57.25\00:05:00.26 And the thing that is quite interesting here 00:05:00.29\00:05:02.88 is that there is a play on words several times. 00:05:02.91\00:05:07.49 One that a lot of people recognize 00:05:07.52\00:05:09.15 is down in verse 8. 00:05:09.18\00:05:10.55 He uses the word "Wind." 00:05:10.58\00:05:12.47 Well, the word wind in Greek is also the word Spirit. 00:05:12.50\00:05:17.64 So the wind blows where it wishes and you don't know, 00:05:17.67\00:05:21.06 so is the spirit, it's the same word you see. 00:05:21.09\00:05:24.14 Well, the interesting thing about being born again 00:05:24.17\00:05:27.59 in verse 3 is that the word "again" 00:05:27.62\00:05:31.13 also means from above. 00:05:31.16\00:05:35.17 Being born from above. 00:05:35.20\00:05:36.57 From above, that means God has given you 00:05:36.60\00:05:39.29 this birth experience, this new birth experience. 00:05:39.32\00:05:43.00 Now which way did Nicodemus take it? 00:05:43.03\00:05:46.91 Did he take it to mean from above or again? 00:05:46.94\00:05:50.54 Again. Yeah. 00:05:50.57\00:05:51.96 Because he asked a question, how can a man 00:05:51.99\00:05:54.26 return to his mother's womb and be born again?" 00:05:54.29\00:05:56.28 So he was thinking karno. 00:05:56.31\00:05:58.93 Yeah, no, this kind of interesting, 00:05:58.96\00:06:00.69 why would he think that way? 00:06:00.72\00:06:04.49 Why would he, you know, say, a man can't be born again, 00:06:04.52\00:06:09.83 he can't go back into his mother's womb, 00:06:09.86\00:06:11.58 and you know, be born a second time, can he? 00:06:11.61\00:06:15.35 And it's interesting because Nicodemus himself 00:06:15.38\00:06:17.27 was a professor at religion, you know. 00:06:17.30\00:06:22.23 Why he would ask something like that, 00:06:22.26\00:06:23.63 you would think he knows what Jesus is talking about. 00:06:23.66\00:06:26.58 He does know what Jesus is talking about. 00:06:26.61\00:06:29.47 What he didn't like was 00:06:29.50\00:06:30.90 that Jesus was saying that he needed it. 00:06:30.93\00:06:34.16 Because he was a professor, you know-- 00:06:34.19\00:06:37.84 He was talking to his heart. 00:06:37.87\00:06:39.31 Yeah. Let me tell you about it. 00:06:39.34\00:06:40.71 Yeah, it was a heart question, that's right. 00:06:40.74\00:06:42.39 And he was applying it to his heart. 00:06:42.42\00:06:44.13 So it's kind of ironic in a sense 00:06:44.16\00:06:45.76 when we say or that you must be born again, 00:06:45.79\00:06:48.67 we are using Nicodemus' words instead of Jesus' words 00:06:48.70\00:06:52.07 that you must be born form above. 00:06:52.10\00:06:54.08 But still it's that birth experience, 00:06:54.11\00:06:56.40 spiritual birth experience that he's talking about. 00:06:56.43\00:06:58.91 He says of being born of water, 00:06:58.94\00:07:00.49 that's baptism and the Spirit, 00:07:00.52\00:07:02.14 that's the Holy Spirit working in your life, 00:07:02.17\00:07:04.21 sanctifying you, cleansing you 00:07:04.24\00:07:05.77 of that all the way of life. 00:07:05.80\00:07:07.75 So if we go back to Peter now. Okay. 00:07:07.78\00:07:10.43 And he says, "Blessed be the God 00:07:10.46\00:07:12.67 and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:07:12.70\00:07:14.38 According to his great mercy, 00:07:14.41\00:07:16.12 he has caused us to be born again." 00:07:16.15\00:07:19.29 He's caused us to be born again. 00:07:19.32\00:07:20.91 Now here's the question. 00:07:20.94\00:07:22.31 When did that rebirth experience 00:07:22.34\00:07:24.66 happened for the people that Peter is writing to? 00:07:24.69\00:07:28.21 That's a good question. 00:07:28.24\00:07:29.61 Maybe you can answer that question. 00:07:29.64\00:07:32.30 Well, if I say, if I put it in to their past, 00:07:32.33\00:07:37.41 their present, or their future, 00:07:37.44\00:07:38.81 what would it be? Their past. 00:07:38.84\00:07:42.04 Their past, because he's right, he gave and he says, 00:07:42.07\00:07:44.93 you know, he gave us, he has caused us 00:07:44.96\00:07:48.11 to be born again to a living hope. 00:07:48.14\00:07:50.94 So that is an experience of their past, okay. 00:07:50.97\00:07:55.24 Now so, just to keep that in mind, 00:07:55.27\00:07:57.58 now he's talked about something 00:07:57.61\00:07:59.50 that has happened in their past. 00:07:59.53\00:08:03.26 Now if we keep looking in the verse, 00:08:03.29\00:08:05.62 he keeps going and he says, "Born unto a living hope 00:08:05.65\00:08:11.44 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." 00:08:11.47\00:08:14.57 Just like Jesus was raised from the dead. 00:08:14.60\00:08:19.68 He had new life come into him. 00:08:19.71\00:08:21.81 God raised him from the dead. 00:08:21.84\00:08:24.08 So God by the resurrection of Jesus, 00:08:24.11\00:08:26.98 notice here, through the resurrection 00:08:27.01\00:08:28.38 of Jesus Christ from the dead. 00:08:28.41\00:08:29.78 Notice, he says that phrase 00:08:29.81\00:08:31.18 through the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:31.21\00:08:33.18 That that's how you and I got that new birth experience too. 00:08:33.21\00:08:37.62 That new life came into our lives 00:08:37.65\00:08:41.16 through the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:41.19\00:08:42.86 So you start thinking about this and you think about baptism 00:08:42.89\00:08:45.64 and how baptism is a sign, a symbol of the death, 00:08:45.67\00:08:50.77 the burial and the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:50.80\00:08:53.19 And so when you're born again, when you're baptized, 00:08:53.22\00:08:56.62 then you enter into that salvation experience. 00:08:56.65\00:08:59.05 That's the kind of thing that Peter is talking about here. 00:08:59.08\00:09:02.66 But he uses the word "Hope." 00:09:02.69\00:09:07.68 When you think of the word hope, 00:09:07.71\00:09:09.08 what do you think of? 00:09:09.11\00:09:10.70 I think of I have-- I can take courage 00:09:10.73\00:09:14.04 that there is a solution to may be a problem that I have. 00:09:14.07\00:09:18.27 That it is not the end. 00:09:18.30\00:09:20.60 That eventually with time, God will provide 00:09:20.63\00:09:24.25 whatever I may need. 00:09:24.28\00:09:25.65 So I have hope that this is not the end of my problem, you know. 00:09:25.68\00:09:30.98 There is a hope. The biblical concept of hope. 00:09:31.01\00:09:33.02 Looking forward to something. 00:09:33.05\00:09:34.42 Is a very forward looking kind of a concept. Yeah. 00:09:34.45\00:09:37.12 It looks forward to something better that's coming. 00:09:37.15\00:09:41.00 And you can almost say, it implies that 00:09:41.03\00:09:43.84 things aren't quite as good as you want them now. 00:09:43.87\00:09:46.87 You have hope that things are going to go forward 00:09:46.90\00:09:49.69 and get better and you know go up from here. 00:09:49.72\00:09:53.18 So notice, there is a past been born again 00:09:53.21\00:09:57.51 and there is a hope that's in the future, all right. 00:09:57.54\00:10:00.70 So there is a past and there is a future 00:10:00.73\00:10:02.45 that he talks about. 00:10:02.48\00:10:03.85 He keeps on going and he says that 00:10:03.88\00:10:06.52 you have this hope and then verse 4 says, 00:10:06.55\00:10:09.40 "To an inheritance that is imperishable, 00:10:09.43\00:10:12.43 undefiled and unfading." 00:10:12.46\00:10:13.83 He used these three words, 00:10:13.86\00:10:15.36 in Greek, we call them alpha privatives. 00:10:15.39\00:10:17.25 They begin with an alpha and so that makes him negative, 00:10:17.28\00:10:22.05 it's not this, it's not this, it's not this. 00:10:22.08\00:10:25.04 And he says it's not perishable, 00:10:25.07\00:10:28.93 it's not defiled and it's not fading away. 00:10:28.96\00:10:34.16 It's a beautiful kind of picture 00:10:34.19\00:10:36.90 of--one scholar speaks of it in this way; 00:10:36.93\00:10:39.78 they say that it's a freedom from death, okay. 00:10:39.81\00:10:45.12 Because it's not gonna perish, the perishable is that 00:10:45.15\00:10:47.90 which decays and dies. 00:10:47.93\00:10:49.89 Freedom from death, freedom from impurity is undefiled. 00:10:49.92\00:10:56.55 And freedom from it's unfading. 00:10:56.58\00:11:02.19 You know, you start to look in-- 00:11:02.22\00:11:03.80 well, most of us don't see it in the mirror every day 00:11:03.83\00:11:05.79 but if you look at the picture of yourself-- 00:11:05.82\00:11:09.87 oh, you're still very young. 00:11:09.90\00:11:12.04 But if you look at the picture of yourself 00:11:12.07\00:11:13.49 when you're a young person 00:11:13.52\00:11:14.89 and then you look at this later picture, 00:11:14.92\00:11:17.73 you can really see the difference. 00:11:17.76\00:11:19.13 I remember, a student of mine 00:11:19.16\00:11:20.75 seeing a picture of my wedding, 00:11:20.78\00:11:22.84 you know, my wedding day. 00:11:22.87\00:11:24.56 They looked at that picture and they laughed. 00:11:24.59\00:11:29.51 Shepherd, you don't look like you used too, you know. 00:11:29.54\00:11:32.20 This is untouched by the ravages of time, this inheritance. 00:11:32.23\00:11:38.92 So there's three wonderful things 00:11:38.95\00:11:40.46 about this inheritance, you see. 00:11:40.49\00:11:42.55 It is, it will not decay, it's not gonna die, 00:11:42.58\00:11:46.67 it is not touched by impurity, 00:11:46.70\00:11:49.49 and it's untouched by the ravages of time. 00:11:49.52\00:11:53.02 Well, certainly is something that I can look forward to, 00:11:53.05\00:11:55.31 there is the hope in my life to say, 00:11:55.34\00:11:56.71 well, my life has a purpose. 00:11:56.74\00:11:59.31 God has a plan for me. 00:11:59.34\00:12:00.71 And I look forward to this incorruptible treasure 00:12:00.74\00:12:04.46 that never fades away, as you've mentioned. 00:12:04.49\00:12:06.02 Right. 00:12:06.05\00:12:07.42 It's an inheritance, you see, 00:12:07.45\00:12:08.92 so you've made a covenant with the God. 00:12:08.95\00:12:10.67 We've already been talking about that, 00:12:10.70\00:12:12.09 you are now His child. 00:12:12.12\00:12:14.00 You are inheriting, you are receiving 00:12:14.03\00:12:16.49 the blessings from God. 00:12:16.52\00:12:18.41 Is there anything in this life 00:12:18.44\00:12:20.14 that can destroy or touch that inheritance? 00:12:20.17\00:12:23.56 And the answer is no, no. 00:12:23.59\00:12:27.27 That's a wonderful security, you see, that these people need. 00:12:27.30\00:12:30.76 And the third thing he says, 00:12:30.79\00:12:32.69 it is kept for them in heaven for you. 00:12:32.72\00:12:36.71 That's at the end of verse 4. 00:12:36.74\00:12:38.38 And then in verse 5, he says, 00:12:38.41\00:12:40.74 "Who by God power are being guarded 00:12:40.77\00:12:44.56 through faith for a salvation 00:12:44.59\00:12:48.06 ready to be revealed at the last time." 00:12:48.09\00:12:51.26 So he's combined these great words about the future, 00:12:51.29\00:12:56.75 you see, he has an inheritance, 00:12:56.78\00:13:02.65 he has a-also the salvation 00:13:02.68\00:13:08.25 that is kept for them 00:13:08.28\00:13:10.75 into the future, and a living hope. 00:13:10.78\00:13:13.97 So a living hope, and salvation, and inheritance. 00:13:14.00\00:13:19.18 These three together, these three outcomes 00:13:19.21\00:13:22.54 are their's and they're all secured. 00:13:22.57\00:13:26.28 The question is, are they present now or they future? 00:13:26.31\00:13:31.38 That's a very good question and also, 00:13:31.41\00:13:33.84 perhaps you can help us understand, 00:13:33.87\00:13:35.70 you know, because we've studied 00:13:35.73\00:13:37.38 that these people are suffering and you help us to understand 00:13:37.41\00:13:42.44 I hope that how can these, 00:13:42.47\00:13:43.84 how can a person rejoice when they are suffering? 00:13:43.87\00:13:47.93 Yeah. 00:13:47.96\00:13:49.33 And perhaps you can answer those questions 00:13:49.36\00:13:51.59 after a brief break. 00:13:51.62\00:13:52.99 This is a very interesting study on the book. Yeah. 00:13:53.02\00:13:54.80 Now we're getting more involved 00:13:54.83\00:13:56.20 into the writings and the messages 00:13:56.23\00:13:57.89 that Peter has for these people. 00:13:57.92\00:13:59.74 Stay tuned, we'll be right back after these messages. 00:13:59.77\00:14:02.66
