Welcome back again, friends. This is "The Books of the Book." 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.27 And with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:04.30\00:00:06.30 He joins us from Andrews University. 00:00:06.33\00:00:08.60 Dr. Shepherd, you were saying 00:00:08.63\00:00:10.00 that these people were different. 00:00:10.03\00:00:12.47 They did not fit into these groups of people. 00:00:12.50\00:00:16.60 Can you share more about that? Right. 00:00:16.63\00:00:18.00 Yeah, the Christian faith had changed them. 00:00:18.03\00:00:21.23 In fact, we want to look at this. 00:00:21.26\00:00:22.63 Let's open our Bibles to 1 Peter 1 00:00:22.66\00:00:24.68 and we want to read verses 1 and 2 of 1 Peter 1. 00:00:24.71\00:00:29.55 Okay, it says, "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, 00:00:29.58\00:00:32.09 to the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, 00:00:32.12\00:00:35.53 Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 00:00:35.56\00:00:38.84 elect according to the foreknowledge 00:00:38.87\00:00:40.88 of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, 00:00:40.91\00:00:44.83 for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:00:44.86\00:00:49.27 Grace to you and peace be multiplied." 00:00:49.30\00:00:52.09 All right. This is the very opening of the book. 00:00:52.12\00:00:54.76 In New Testament epistles it's always important to look 00:00:54.79\00:00:57.37 at the opening of the book. 00:00:57.40\00:00:59.37 Because in the opening of the book 00:00:59.40\00:01:00.77 is where the concepts and the themes 00:01:00.80\00:01:04.33 of the book are presented, all right. 00:01:04.36\00:01:06.65 And Peter begins this right from the very get go. 00:01:06.68\00:01:10.90 He says who he is, is very typical 00:01:10.93\00:01:13.40 of letter writing in that day. 00:01:13.43\00:01:15.25 He says who its recipients are 00:01:15.28\00:01:17.31 and that's also very typical of letter writing of that day. 00:01:17.34\00:01:20.31 And then he says-- he describes them. 00:01:20.34\00:01:23.92 You use the term-- my Bible I'm using the ESV, 00:01:23.95\00:01:26.85 the English Standard Version. 00:01:26.88\00:01:28.25 It says, "elect exiles." What does yours call? 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.78 Pilgrims. Pilgrims. 00:01:30.81\00:01:32.18 Yeah. Yeah-- 00:01:32.21\00:01:33.79 A foreigner Is that-- would that be a-- 00:01:33.82\00:01:35.44 Foreigners, yes. 00:01:35.47\00:01:36.84 But there's two terms actually. 00:01:36.87\00:01:38.24 Does it just use the word pilgrims? 00:01:38.27\00:01:39.64 "To the pilgrims of the dispersion." 00:01:39.67\00:01:41.34 Uh, okay. 00:01:41.37\00:01:42.74 Yeah there's actually two terms 00:01:42.77\00:01:44.78 that are put together here in Greek. 00:01:44.81\00:01:47.42 And one is this concept of being elect or chosen. 00:01:47.45\00:01:52.94 And the other is the idea of being a stranger 00:01:52.97\00:01:56.01 or a pilgrim or an exile or something like that. 00:01:56.04\00:02:00.45 So we think first of the idea of being chosen or elect. 00:02:00.48\00:02:06.52 Many countries have elections. 00:02:06.55\00:02:08.75 And what-- so what happens 00:02:08.78\00:02:10.15 when you're having an election is what you do. 00:02:10.18\00:02:12.96 You choose your leader, right? You vote, okay. 00:02:12.99\00:02:16.67 Well, this election is not like that. 00:02:16.70\00:02:19.98 This is God choosing you. So God gets to vote. 00:02:20.01\00:02:23.98 God gets to vote. He makes the choice. 00:02:24.01\00:02:26.27 Now some people get the idea under Biblical election 00:02:26.30\00:02:30.14 that some people are predestined to be saved 00:02:30.17\00:02:32.93 and others are predestined to be lost. 00:02:32.96\00:02:36.03 But of course, 2 Peter written by our same apostle will say 00:02:36.06\00:02:40.67 that God is not willing that anyone should perish 00:02:40.70\00:02:42.83 but they all should come to repentance. 00:02:42.86\00:02:44.51 So the chosen is--we'll explain this a bit more as we go along, 00:02:44.54\00:02:49.75 its linkage to the will of God and how people respond. 00:02:49.78\00:02:54.39 But people have free choice in this book. 00:02:54.42\00:02:56.85 We're gonna see that over and over 00:02:56.88\00:02:58.74 that people have the ability to change, to choose. 00:02:58.77\00:03:02.12 So this being chosen is a concept that is tied 00:03:02.15\00:03:07.77 into the Old Testament ideas about God choosing Israel. 00:03:07.80\00:03:13.37 You know, He chooses Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. 00:03:13.40\00:03:17.41 And He brings the people out of Egypt 00:03:17.44\00:03:20.91 and at Sinai He sets up a covenant with them. 00:03:20.94\00:03:23.89 They become His people. 00:03:23.92\00:03:26.64 Peter is gonna tie into all those ideas and link it in 00:03:26.67\00:03:31.07 to this Christian community, this household of faith 00:03:31.10\00:03:34.62 as we might say that's so important. 00:03:34.65\00:03:36.35 And doesn't Jesus say, "you did not choose me, 00:03:36.38\00:03:38.90 I choose you?" Yes. Okay. 00:03:38.93\00:03:40.50 Right, so again that linkage into the teachings of Jesus. 00:03:40.53\00:03:45.21 Now why does Peter call them elect? 00:03:45.24\00:03:48.51 Yeah, so they are elect. 00:03:48.54\00:03:50.83 They are the special group 00:03:50.86\00:03:52.42 because they have entered the covenant with God. 00:03:52.45\00:03:56.29 They have become His children. 00:03:56.32\00:03:58.95 And He is--notice it says He is their father, all right? 00:03:58.98\00:04:02.45 So that is a very positive kind of terminology, 00:04:02.48\00:04:08.27 a positive way of talking about somebody. 00:04:08.30\00:04:11.30 If you're chosen, you know, if somebody choose you 00:04:11.33\00:04:14.24 to get to go to the White House or something-- 00:04:14.27\00:04:19.24 I've been specially chosen to do this, you know? 00:04:19.27\00:04:21.88 And so you would be-- that would be 00:04:21.91\00:04:24.21 a very positive honor to you. 00:04:24.24\00:04:27.28 But connected with this is this word stranger. 00:04:27.31\00:04:32.70 And I know what it's like to be a stranger and a foreigner. 00:04:32.73\00:04:35.99 My wife and I were missionaries in Malawi, Africa, 00:04:36.02\00:04:38.88 but we're also missionaries in Brazil in South America. 00:04:38.91\00:04:42.41 And when you're foreigner in the land 00:04:42.44\00:04:44.74 where they don't talk your mother tongue, 00:04:44.77\00:04:47.59 it's really challenging, you know, just to find out 00:04:47.62\00:04:51.76 where the food can be, where's the bank, 00:04:51.79\00:04:54.10 you know, where's the bathroom. 00:04:54.13\00:04:55.63 I mean, you know, there's all kinds of things 00:04:55.66\00:04:57.36 where it can be very challenging in order to live. 00:04:57.39\00:05:01.66 So that's a very negative kind of a term. 00:05:01.69\00:05:06.23 That's a term that puts you down. 00:05:06.26\00:05:08.87 So you have an oxymoron. 00:05:08.90\00:05:11.12 You have a very positive term 00:05:11.15\00:05:13.32 connected with the very negative term. 00:05:13.35\00:05:15.13 And oxymoron is when two opposites are combined together. 00:05:15.16\00:05:18.02 Like if we said an innocent guilt 00:05:18.05\00:05:21.00 or Shakespeare's words "parting is such sweet sorrow." 00:05:21.03\00:05:26.05 How can sorrow be sweet? That's right. 00:05:26.08\00:05:27.45 Yeah, so how can somebody who's elect be a stranger? 00:05:27.48\00:05:33.46 So that we'll unpack as we go through looking at this book. 00:05:33.49\00:05:39.25 The concept of stranger is linked 00:05:39.28\00:05:41.69 with the ethical language of the Book of Peter. 00:05:41.72\00:05:44.58 Some people think that when he says strangers 00:05:44.61\00:05:46.35 he just means that they were foreigners. 00:05:46.38\00:05:49.41 They didn't come from Cappadocia or Asia or something. 00:05:49.44\00:05:52.37 They were imports from some place else. 00:05:52.40\00:05:55.38 But the problem with that is whenever you read 00:05:55.41\00:05:59.81 the book of 1 Peter when he talks about this term, 00:05:59.84\00:06:03.80 and he uses it several times, 00:06:03.83\00:06:05.60 he always links it up with ethical language 00:06:05.63\00:06:08.81 over theological language. 00:06:08.84\00:06:10.83 He imbues it with-- he seems to imbue it 00:06:10.86\00:06:13.38 with theological and ethical ideas. 00:06:13.41\00:06:16.35 Therefore, he's probably talking metaphorically 00:06:16.38\00:06:20.27 that we're strangers. 00:06:20.30\00:06:22.50 We talk about this in the church today. 00:06:22.53\00:06:24.20 We'll say, "I'm a pilgrim 00:06:24.23\00:06:26.08 or I'm a stranger in this world." 00:06:26.11\00:06:28.23 Our citizenship is in heaven. 00:06:28.26\00:06:30.25 Our citizenship is in heaven, not in this earth. 00:06:30.28\00:06:33.14 And you know, it's just applying the message, 00:06:33.17\00:06:35.86 just briefly thinking for a moment 00:06:35.89\00:06:37.26 to think of the application of this method--message. 00:06:37.29\00:06:41.24 You think and you say, 00:06:41.27\00:06:42.64 "okay, what makes me different from the world around me? 00:06:42.67\00:06:46.99 What makes me a stranger in this world? 00:06:47.02\00:06:50.33 And makes me, you know, like Jesus 00:06:50.36\00:06:54.27 different from the world around me?" 00:06:54.30\00:06:56.42 Now of course, we, in many places, 00:06:56.45\00:06:58.21 live in a Christian culture so we may not 00:06:58.24\00:07:00.70 standout quite so much. 00:07:00.73\00:07:02.10 But I dare say that Seventh-day Adventist 00:07:02.13\00:07:04.53 have a number of things that make them standout. 00:07:04.56\00:07:06.24 One is the Sabbath, of course, that makes us really different. 00:07:06.27\00:07:11.01 And we can relate pretty well to being strangers to this idea. 00:07:11.04\00:07:14.18 But we better press on. 00:07:14.21\00:07:15.94 You know, I notice here that there are three verse 00:07:15.97\00:07:18.13 linked up with God, the Spirit, and Jesus 00:07:18.16\00:07:20.19 and that those three words are for knowledge, 00:07:20.22\00:07:23.30 sanctification, the sprinkling of the blood. 00:07:23.33\00:07:27.43 Sounds just kind of difficult. 00:07:27.46\00:07:29.18 Can you explain what does this mean? Yeah. 00:07:29.21\00:07:31.46 First of all we notice that there is God, the Father 00:07:31.49\00:07:34.32 with the Spirit and Jesus Christ. 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.61 That's the-- Trini... 00:07:36.64\00:07:38.27 The Trinity, yeah. 00:07:38.30\00:07:39.67 Here's one of those places in the New Testament 00:07:39.70\00:07:41.87 where this concept, I mean, the word Trinity is never used. 00:07:41.90\00:07:45.52 But you have these three members of the Godhead 00:07:45.55\00:07:47.73 working together for our salvation 00:07:47.76\00:07:49.71 and then each have a part to play. 00:07:49.74\00:07:52.76 Somebody says, "ah, I'm not so sure that 00:07:52.79\00:07:55.89 that's really Trinitarian language. 00:07:55.92\00:07:58.50 Is there any other evidence for that?" 00:07:58.53\00:08:00.42 Well, as we will continue to study 00:08:00.45\00:08:02.61 and once we read further into this first chapter, 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.65 the first part talks about God, the Father. 00:08:05.68\00:08:08.07 The second part talks about Jesus Christ. 00:08:08.10\00:08:10.44 And the third part talks about the Holy Spirit. 00:08:10.47\00:08:12.91 So they are mentioned in this second verse of the book 00:08:12.94\00:08:16.21 and then their roles are expounded and explained 00:08:16.24\00:08:19.63 and unwrapped in the following verses. 00:08:19.66\00:08:22.02 So yes, it is very much Trinitarian language. 00:08:22.05\00:08:24.99 It is very much kind of a planned out expression 00:08:25.02\00:08:29.11 that he is putting forth here. 00:08:29.14\00:08:30.67 Now what he does is he ties each of these individuals 00:08:30.70\00:08:34.95 of the Godhead to a different idea. 00:08:34.98\00:08:36.80 He talks about the foreknowledge of God, the Father. 00:08:36.83\00:08:40.02 He talks about sanctification of the spirit and then he says 00:08:40.05\00:08:43.30 for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling with His blood. 00:08:43.33\00:08:47.51 Let's start with foreknowledge, okay. 00:08:47.54\00:08:50.57 This is said to be in accordance with the foreknowledge of God. 00:08:50.60\00:08:54.41 Now remember he's talking about election. 00:08:54.44\00:08:57.24 He's talking about us being God's chosen people. 00:08:57.27\00:09:00.07 How did that take place? 00:09:00.10\00:09:02.58 The three members of the Godhead were each involved 00:09:02.61\00:09:05.54 in this process of these people becoming Christians, 00:09:05.57\00:09:08.28 of them becoming linked to Him in a special way, 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.03 in a special covenant with Him, okay? 00:09:11.06\00:09:13.52 So the first is according to the foreknowledge of God. 00:09:13.55\00:09:16.02 God knows everything. 00:09:16.05\00:09:19.43 Before it happens He knows what's going to take place. 00:09:19.46\00:09:23.14 His foreknowledge, He foresees everything that will take-- 00:09:23.17\00:09:26.69 now that doesn't mean that He takes and rules, 00:09:26.72\00:09:30.54 you know, overrules our will. 00:09:30.57\00:09:32.55 He has given us the freedom of choice, 00:09:32.58\00:09:34.95 but He knows everything that will take place. 00:09:34.98\00:09:37.60 So according to His foreknowledge, 00:09:37.63\00:09:40.45 seen in His great eternity 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.26 all that will take place, He elects us. 00:09:42.29\00:09:46.14 He chooses us to be His children. 00:09:46.17\00:09:49.29 Next comes the phraseology, sanctification of the spirit. 00:09:49.32\00:09:53.61 What kind of words do you think of 00:09:53.64\00:09:55.43 when you think of the word sanctification? 00:09:55.46\00:09:58.22 Holiness. Holiness, certainly. 00:09:58.25\00:10:00.44 Being separate. Being separate, yeah. 00:10:00.47\00:10:02.72 Separated for God's use, all right. 00:10:02.75\00:10:05.19 This is what they did. 00:10:05.22\00:10:07.18 The concept of holiness is a big idea in the Bible. 00:10:07.21\00:10:11.43 And one of the easiest ways to think of it 00:10:11.46\00:10:13.58 is anything that is connected with God is holy. 00:10:13.61\00:10:19.14 So anything that is connected to God is holy. 00:10:19.17\00:10:22.38 You think when He meets Moses, 00:10:22.41\00:10:24.49 He says to him at the burning bush, 00:10:24.52\00:10:26.09 He says, "take off your shoes, because"-- 00:10:26.12\00:10:29.42 The ground... The ground... 00:10:29.45\00:10:30.83 Is holy. Is holy. 00:10:30.86\00:10:32.23 What made the ground holy? 00:10:32.26\00:10:33.63 God's presence. God's presence. 00:10:33.66\00:10:35.03 He is there in the bush and that makes the ground holy. 00:10:35.06\00:10:37.38 He's in the temple, that makes the temple holy. 00:10:37.41\00:10:40.02 Now the Spirit comes into our life 00:10:40.05\00:10:42.65 and that's what sanctifies us, 00:10:42.68\00:10:44.05 that separates us for God, for God's use. 00:10:44.08\00:10:47.23 Now the idea of holiness we will unpack 00:10:47.26\00:10:49.67 as we go through this book. 00:10:49.70\00:10:51.33 It is also connected with the idea of purity, 00:10:51.36\00:10:54.65 being like God, being holy, being separate, 00:10:54.68\00:10:57.65 not following the world's ways. 00:10:57.68\00:10:59.86 Holiness is the separateness from the world's ways. 00:10:59.89\00:11:03.71 Now you can think of sanctification 00:11:03.74\00:11:06.33 as something that happens just like that. 00:11:06.36\00:11:09.02 You're set apart to be used by God. 00:11:09.05\00:11:11.09 But you can also think of it as that purifying word 00:11:11.12\00:11:14.24 that is--Ellen White says "is the work of a lifetime." 00:11:14.27\00:11:18.00 Okay, so that sanctifying, holifying work, 00:11:18.03\00:11:21.64 that work of putting you apart, 00:11:21.67\00:11:23.46 that's the work of the Sprit in the life. 00:11:23.49\00:11:25.39 Sanctification by the Spirit of God. 00:11:25.42\00:11:28.91 Then we come to the last phrase and it kind of confuses people, 00:11:28.94\00:11:31.45 'cause it says, "for obedience 00:11:31.48\00:11:32.95 and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus." 00:11:32.98\00:11:34.35 Let me ask you a question. 00:11:34.38\00:11:35.75 Which comes first, justification or sanctification? 00:11:35.78\00:11:39.98 Well, justification. You would say justification. 00:11:40.01\00:11:43.06 I would say so. That seems to be right answer. 00:11:43.09\00:11:46.00 But Peter seems to put it backwards. 00:11:46.03\00:11:48.12 He says obedience, you know, sanctification kind of things 00:11:48.15\00:11:51.25 and then sprinkling of the blood of Jesus. 00:11:51.28\00:11:53.48 How can that be? 00:11:53.51\00:11:55.32 Well, actually what he's referring to 00:11:55.35\00:11:57.83 is a passage of scripture. 00:11:57.86\00:11:59.23 We don't have time to read it right now. 00:11:59.26\00:12:00.98 But a passage of scripture in Exodus 24:3-8, 00:12:01.01\00:12:05.59 where Moses comes down from the mountain of Sinai 00:12:05.62\00:12:09.64 and he says to the-- he's going to-- 00:12:09.67\00:12:12.89 he says God wants to make a covenant with you. 00:12:12.92\00:12:15.62 He has these rules for you to obey. 00:12:15.65\00:12:17.25 And then the people say, "all that the Lord has said, 00:12:17.28\00:12:20.64 we will do." We will obey the Lord." 00:12:20.67\00:12:22.79 Then it says, Moses takes and sprinkles them 00:12:22.82\00:12:25.75 with the blood of the covenant, all right. 00:12:25.78\00:12:28.28 So this whole thing here 00:12:28.31\00:12:30.45 and particularly this last part obedience and sprinkling 00:12:30.48\00:12:32.92 is all of this covenant making with God. 00:12:32.95\00:12:35.83 God choosing them as His people 00:12:35.86\00:12:37.52 and then becoming God's people through God's foreknowledge, 00:12:37.55\00:12:41.64 though the sanctifying work of the Spirit, 00:12:41.67\00:12:43.85 through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ 00:12:43.88\00:12:46.59 and their commitment to follow Him. 00:12:46.62\00:12:48.88 That's what it means to be chosen and elect. 00:12:48.91\00:12:52.27 Well, I take motivation, I take courage 00:12:52.30\00:12:55.26 that God has chosen me. Yes. 00:12:55.29\00:12:57.26 He's chosen you and He's chosen each of our viewers as well. 00:12:57.29\00:13:00.73 Dr. Shepherd, to wrap up our--this study, 00:13:00.76\00:13:03.71 what is it that that you'd like to tell 00:13:03.74\00:13:05.30 our listening audience or viewers? 00:13:05.33\00:13:08.62 We've seen in these last-- in this verse, 00:13:08.65\00:13:11.05 a beautiful, beautiful expression 00:13:11.08\00:13:13.47 of how God is choosing your life 00:13:13.50\00:13:16.20 if you will respond to Him. 00:13:16.23\00:13:17.91 The Trinity is working together to save you, to save me. 00:13:17.94\00:13:22.33 And if we will respond we can have this wonderful salvation. 00:13:22.36\00:13:25.88 Thank you, Dr. Shepherd. 00:13:25.91\00:13:27.28 And thank you to listening friends. 00:13:27.31\00:13:28.74 God bless you, till next time. 00:13:28.77\00:13:31.03
