Hello, friends and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.55\00:00:25.50 We are excited that you can join us 00:00:25.53\00:00:26.99 in being part of this fascinating Bible study. 00:00:27.02\00:00:29.13 I'm Deyvy Rodriguez and I'd like to invite you 00:00:29.16\00:00:31.26 to take your Bibles, grab a pen or pencil, 00:00:31.29\00:00:33.94 something to write on and let's be blessed 00:00:33.97\00:00:35.83 as we study the scriptures together. 00:00:35.86\00:00:37.85 With me is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:37.88\00:00:39.68 He's the professor of New Testament 00:00:39.71\00:00:41.41 interpretation at Andrews University. 00:00:41.44\00:00:43.33 Welcome. Thank you. 00:00:43.36\00:00:44.73 Dr. Shepherd, you're also a director of the PhD program 00:00:44.76\00:00:48.20 in religion at Andrews University, is that right? 00:00:48.23\00:00:50.43 That's correct. The PhD in religion and the ThD, 00:00:50.46\00:00:53.85 Doctor of Theology programs. 00:00:53.88\00:00:56.06 I was asked to guide these people. 00:00:56.09\00:00:58.45 We have about 100 people doing 00:00:58.48\00:00:59.86 the PhD in those two programs. 00:00:59.89\00:01:02.02 Okay, so you seem to be very busy then. 00:01:02.05\00:01:05.10 Yeah, pretty busy. I keep active. 00:01:05.13\00:01:07.65 When you're not busy or what you do on your time off 00:01:07.68\00:01:10.47 when you're not teaching? 00:01:10.50\00:01:11.87 Well, my wife will probably tell you 00:01:11.90\00:01:13.80 there's not much of that. Okay, lot of work. 00:01:13.83\00:01:16.94 A lot of work, but I'm a cellist. 00:01:16.97\00:01:19.92 I play the cello and so that takes up some of my spare time. 00:01:19.95\00:01:23.94 I also like to walk. Okay. 00:01:23.97\00:01:25.77 Walk everyday. So you're a musician? 00:01:25.80\00:01:27.77 I'm a musician. Wonderful. 00:01:27.80\00:01:29.70 Well, we're studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:01:29.73\00:01:33.11 And last time we talked about Peter. 00:01:33.14\00:01:36.58 He is the author of these books. So who is Peter? 00:01:36.61\00:01:40.55 You know, it's interesting how much we can find out 00:01:40.58\00:01:42.29 about this man just by reading the New Testament. 00:01:42.32\00:01:44.81 We particularly find out about him by reading the Gospels. 00:01:44.84\00:01:47.91 And there, of course, most people will realize 00:01:47.94\00:01:50.19 that Peter was a fisherman by trade. 00:01:50.22\00:01:52.86 He lived in the area of the Galilee. 00:01:52.89\00:01:57.51 Near the lake there was a town called Capernaum 00:01:57.54\00:02:01.22 where he lived, although that's not where he was born. 00:02:01.25\00:02:04.80 He was raised evidently in the town of the Bethsaida 00:02:04.83\00:02:07.96 which is a little further to the north 00:02:07.99\00:02:10.22 and on the other side of the river Jordon. 00:02:10.25\00:02:15.13 Today, actually Bethsaida is not next to the lake 00:02:15.16\00:02:18.06 because the area is prone to earthquakes. 00:02:18.09\00:02:21.13 And there was a mudslide and it all got filled in. 00:02:21.16\00:02:24.88 Bethsaida is now up on a little promontory 00:02:24.91\00:02:26.81 that's maybe couple of miles or kilometers away from the lake. 00:02:26.84\00:02:30.76 But he settled in Capernaum. 00:02:30.79\00:02:32.87 We know that he was a married man, 00:02:32.90\00:02:35.04 because Mark tells us that his mother-in-law was ill 00:02:35.07\00:02:39.93 and Jesus healed her. 00:02:39.96\00:02:41.80 And we also know his father's name was John. 00:02:41.83\00:02:45.78 And of course, he gets the name Peter. 00:02:45.81\00:02:50.44 His actual name was Simon, given name was Simon. 00:02:50.47\00:02:53.34 And it's Jesus who gives him 00:02:53.37\00:02:54.94 the nick name Peter, which means rock. 00:02:54.97\00:02:59.02 So his name is Rock and his name would be-- 00:02:59.05\00:03:03.98 today might be Johnson because he's son of John, Johnson. 00:03:04.01\00:03:07.47 So this is Rock Johnson. 00:03:07.50\00:03:09.49 And he has a brother named Andrew. 00:03:09.52\00:03:13.71 And so he becomes a very important person 00:03:13.74\00:03:18.25 among the apostles. 00:03:18.28\00:03:19.65 Whenever we have the 12 disciples listed 00:03:19.68\00:03:22.46 or mentioned in the New Testament, 00:03:22.49\00:03:24.88 Peter is always listed first. 00:03:24.91\00:03:28.00 We know that he talks more than 00:03:28.03\00:03:31.23 anybody else in the Gospels. 00:03:31.26\00:03:34.30 And to many of us he seems like 00:03:34.33\00:03:37.30 he sort of blurts things out before, you know, 00:03:37.33\00:03:39.67 he thinks about them. 00:03:39.70\00:03:42.23 But here's the first one to confess 00:03:42.26\00:03:45.30 that Jesus is the Messiah, 00:03:45.33\00:03:48.19 but he also has this great detriment to Him 00:03:48.22\00:03:52.66 that he denies Jesus three times. 00:03:52.69\00:03:55.48 So the man went through incredible, 00:03:55.51\00:03:59.27 you know, experiences. 00:03:59.30\00:04:01.84 His calling that Jesus gave him is interesting to look at. 00:04:01.87\00:04:06.38 So I want us to turn to Luke 5 and read verses 1 to 11. 00:04:06.41\00:04:12.00 Do you want me to read that? Yes, if you would. 00:04:15.59\00:04:18.02 "So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him 00:04:18.05\00:04:20.59 to hear the word of God that He stood 00:04:20.62\00:04:22.94 by the Lake of Gennesaret. 00:04:22.97\00:04:25.31 And saw two boats standing by the lake 00:04:25.34\00:04:27.58 but the fishermen had gone from them 00:04:27.61\00:04:29.78 and were washing their nets. 00:04:29.81\00:04:31.60 Then He got into one of the boats, 00:04:31.63\00:04:33.85 which was Simon's, and asked him to put out 00:04:33.88\00:04:36.70 a little from the land. 00:04:36.73\00:04:39.62 And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 00:04:39.65\00:04:42.97 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, 00:04:43.00\00:04:45.90 'Launch out into the deep 00:04:45.93\00:04:48.02 and let down your nets for a catch.' 00:04:48.05\00:04:50.65 But Simon Peter answered and said to Him, 00:04:50.68\00:04:52.55 'Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing. 00:04:52.58\00:04:56.29 Nevertheless, at Your word I will let it down the net.' 00:04:56.32\00:05:00.62 And when they had done this, 00:05:00.65\00:05:02.51 they caught a great number of fish, 00:05:02.54\00:05:05.00 and their net was breaking. 00:05:05.03\00:05:08.06 So they signaled to their partners 00:05:08.09\00:05:12.79 in the other boat to come and help them. 00:05:12.82\00:05:15.12 And they came and filled both the boats 00:05:15.15\00:05:17.15 so that they began to sink. 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.28 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, 00:05:19.31\00:05:21.98 saying, 'Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.' 00:05:22.01\00:05:26.78 For he and all who were with him were astonished 00:05:26.81\00:05:29.72 at the catch of fish which they had taken. 00:05:29.75\00:05:33.08 And so also were James and John, 00:05:33.11\00:05:35.33 and the sons of Zebedee-- or the sons of Zebedee, 00:05:35.36\00:05:37.91 who were partners with Simon. 00:05:37.94\00:05:39.62 And Jesus said to Simon, 'Do not be afraid. 00:05:39.65\00:05:42.69 From now on you will catch men.'" 00:05:42.72\00:05:45.72 Verse 11 as well. 00:05:45.75\00:05:47.90 "And when they had brought their boats to land, 00:05:47.93\00:05:51.09 they forsook all and followed Him." 00:05:51.12\00:05:54.37 So what kind of a person would you say Peter was 00:05:54.40\00:05:56.64 probably after this experience? 00:05:56.67\00:05:58.48 Well, sounds like he was a common man. 00:05:58.51\00:06:02.76 He felt that he was not worthy of getting-- 00:06:02.79\00:06:06.68 drawing closer to God. Yes, yes, he was a fisherman. 00:06:06.71\00:06:09.81 He was a fisherman. So he was a businessman. 00:06:09.84\00:06:12.71 We can say he was a businessman. 00:06:12.74\00:06:15.74 He seemed to know what he was doing, because apparently 00:06:15.77\00:06:18.46 he had experience fishing in this manner. 00:06:18.49\00:06:20.75 And in this case something spectacular happened, 00:06:20.78\00:06:24.68 some kind of miracle and he was very surprised. 00:06:24.71\00:06:27.87 Apparently he had not had such an experience before fishing. 00:06:27.90\00:06:31.31 Yeah. And he has partners so he's, you know, 00:06:31.34\00:06:35.06 he's a person within that culture who, 00:06:35.09\00:06:38.98 you know, knows how to have a livelihood, 00:06:39.01\00:06:41.33 makes his way in life, has a boat. 00:06:41.36\00:06:44.22 And that's, you know, he has some success in life. 00:06:44.25\00:06:48.45 He's not poverty stricken, you know, down and out. 00:06:48.48\00:06:52.82 So would you say he's like the CEO of himself, 00:06:52.85\00:06:56.36 I guess, fisherman? 00:06:56.39\00:06:57.76 I would say he's like a small business owner. Okay. 00:06:57.79\00:06:59.71 You know, today's small businesses would have, 00:06:59.74\00:07:03.18 you know, couple of employees. 00:07:03.21\00:07:04.64 And they'd have some inventory. 00:07:04.67\00:07:06.04 And they'd have a going concern. 00:07:06.07\00:07:08.31 And they would be making their life and they'd be, 00:07:08.34\00:07:10.22 you know, going through it. 00:07:10.25\00:07:11.62 So he fits in like a small business people today. 00:07:11.65\00:07:15.22 Now this experience that he has here in Luke 5 00:07:15.25\00:07:20.99 has the characteristics of something 00:07:21.02\00:07:22.93 we call a theophany and-- Sounds like theology. 00:07:22.96\00:07:27.59 Yeah, theology. It certainly got the word God in it 00:07:27.62\00:07:31.36 but at the end of that the verb 00:07:31.39\00:07:33.54 "pheno" is a Greek verb actually. 00:07:33.57\00:07:36.14 It means "to appear." 00:07:36.17\00:07:37.57 So a theophany is when God appears. 00:07:37.60\00:07:40.81 And when God appears in the Bible or a divine 00:07:40.84\00:07:43.57 being appears or an angel appears, 00:07:43.60\00:07:46.06 there's a very typical kind of response that takes place. 00:07:46.09\00:07:49.93 It has five parts, five steps. 00:07:49.96\00:07:52.27 The first step is the appearance of the divine glory, okay? 00:07:52.30\00:07:57.19 The second step is human fear, all right? 00:07:57.22\00:08:02.20 The third step is the angel or God 00:08:02.23\00:08:05.18 or whoever has appeared says, "don't be afraid." 00:08:05.21\00:08:10.10 Then there is some revelation that is shared. 00:08:10.13\00:08:13.15 The divine being came, God came for a reason 00:08:13.18\00:08:16.63 to share something. 00:08:16.66\00:08:18.58 And then the fifth step is human response, okay. 00:08:18.61\00:08:21.93 So we have divine glory. Then we have human fear. 00:08:21.96\00:08:26.97 Then we have don't be afraid. 00:08:27.00\00:08:29.61 Then we have revelation, and then finally human response. 00:08:29.64\00:08:33.56 Now my question is can you see those things 00:08:33.59\00:08:36.72 taking place here in this chapter? 00:08:36.75\00:08:39.29 Well, maybe you can help me out here. 00:08:39.32\00:08:41.00 Yeah. What is the first one again? 00:08:41.03\00:08:42.50 Glory. Glory. 00:08:42.53\00:08:43.90 So we're looking for glory in the calling of Peter. 00:08:43.93\00:08:47.00 Of Peter. And there's no reference. 00:08:47.03\00:08:48.69 The word glory doesn't appear there. 00:08:48.72\00:08:50.09 No, there isn't. Okay. 00:08:50.12\00:08:51.49 I'm gonna have a hard time finding out. 00:08:51.52\00:08:53.02 Well, the glory is the miracle. Okay. 00:08:53.05\00:08:55.71 When God shows something that it amazes people, 00:08:55.74\00:08:58.78 you know, that's the glory of His power. 00:08:58.81\00:09:01.21 It's linked up with His power. 00:09:01.24\00:09:02.61 I'm taking a guess here but it seems that the glory, 00:09:02.64\00:09:04.78 the miracle was that they caught a lot of fish. 00:09:04.81\00:09:08.12 Yep. But how is that a miracle? 00:09:08.15\00:09:10.73 Fishermen are used to catching a lot of fish. 00:09:10.76\00:09:13.91 Maybe one day wasn't a good day. 00:09:13.94\00:09:15.39 Maybe another day, you know? 00:09:15.42\00:09:16.88 Yeah, so this is a good day 00:09:16.91\00:09:18.81 because this is during the day time. 00:09:18.84\00:09:21.53 And you notice Peter reacts to Him when he says, 00:09:21.56\00:09:23.72 "let out and your nets down." 00:09:23.75\00:09:25.89 And he says, "we fished all night." 00:09:25.92\00:09:27.48 That's when you'd catch the fish. 00:09:27.51\00:09:28.88 The fish couldn't see the nets during the night 00:09:28.91\00:09:30.81 and so you could catch the fish, not during the day. 00:09:30.84\00:09:32.74 So he knows what he is talking about 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.14 because he's experienced? 00:09:34.17\00:09:35.54 Yeah. And he thinks, "oh, this is a carpenter. 00:09:35.57\00:09:38.10 He doesn't know what He's talking about. 00:09:38.13\00:09:39.70 But he says, "okay, Master, 00:09:39.73\00:09:41.10 because you say so I'll let down the nets." 00:09:41.13\00:09:43.78 And then they take fish they can't, you know, 00:09:43.81\00:09:47.27 they can't take care of them. 00:09:47.30\00:09:48.67 There's--it fills both boats to overflowing. 00:09:48.70\00:09:51.62 The boats are about to sink, you know. 00:09:51.65\00:09:53.80 Now when you see a miracle happen it's-- 00:09:53.83\00:09:59.11 it really strikes your life. 00:09:59.14\00:10:00.73 You're like, "whoa, this is like going to Niagara Falls 00:10:00.76\00:10:05.78 and being next to this huge water, you know?" 00:10:05.81\00:10:07.59 It's like--it's almost scary, you see. So-- 00:10:07.62\00:10:10.37 Especially if you're an unbeliever, 00:10:10.40\00:10:11.77 you don't really believe in miracles, 00:10:11.80\00:10:13.17 you've never seen one, and you're not used to that, 00:10:13.20\00:10:15.07 you've never heard of something like that and suddenly... 00:10:15.10\00:10:17.10 Yeah. So the glory is the miracle. 00:10:17.13\00:10:19.74 The second step is the human fear. 00:10:19.77\00:10:23.77 That's referred to in here. 00:10:23.80\00:10:25.77 Actually it says, "he and all of his-- 00:10:25.80\00:10:29.04 they were completely astonished," in verse 9 it says. 00:10:29.07\00:10:32.53 And in fact, Peter's response to Him, 00:10:32.56\00:10:35.13 "depart me--from me for I am a sinful man, Oh, Lord." 00:10:35.16\00:10:39.05 Here's that human fear, that's the drawing back 00:10:39.08\00:10:41.72 from that which is divine because it's too scary, 00:10:41.75\00:10:43.91 'cause it's too powerful, okay? 00:10:43.94\00:10:45.72 So that's the human fear. 00:10:45.75\00:10:47.43 Does the words "don't be afraid" appear? 00:10:47.46\00:10:49.88 I don't see it. Hmm. 00:10:49.91\00:10:51.94 Oh, wait, verse 10 does say, 00:10:51.97\00:10:53.53 Jesus said, "do not be afraid." Okay, that's here. 00:10:53.56\00:10:57.05 Yeah, you see. And then the next step is the revelation. 00:10:57.08\00:11:00.67 Now here's the revelation. 00:11:00.70\00:11:02.07 And it's the next words of Jesus. Read them again. 00:11:02.10\00:11:03.80 "From now on you will catch men." 00:11:03.83\00:11:06.54 Yes, so this is the revelation. 00:11:06.57\00:11:08.92 This is the reason for the catch of fish. 00:11:08.95\00:11:10.95 And this is the start of their ministry. 00:11:10.98\00:11:13.39 And how about the human response? 00:11:13.42\00:11:16.94 Well, it says here, verse 11, 00:11:16.97\00:11:18.78 "they brought their boats to land, 00:11:18.81\00:11:20.18 they forsook all and followed Him." 00:11:20.21\00:11:22.84 Yep. So there it is. Here's this human response. 00:11:22.87\00:11:26.99 So it's a typical theophany, 00:11:27.02\00:11:29.55 kind of a little bit hidden to our view. 00:11:29.58\00:11:31.46 It doesn't have some of the other characteristics 00:11:31.49\00:11:33.80 that, you know, people might usually think, 00:11:33.83\00:11:36.09 the reference to glory or something. 00:11:36.12\00:11:37.72 But all of them that are there and this is exactly 00:11:37.75\00:11:40.59 what the call of Peter is about. 00:11:40.62\00:11:41.99 It's the appearance of God. He calls them to a new life. 00:11:42.02\00:11:45.18 He changes the way they are. All right? 00:11:45.21\00:11:47.32 So this is this guy Peter 00:11:47.35\00:11:48.85 that wrote this book that we're reading. 00:11:48.88\00:11:50.37 Oh, you know, now it makes me think about 00:11:50.40\00:11:52.34 my experience regarding that theophany, 00:11:52.37\00:11:55.30 if I ever had that experience. 00:11:55.33\00:11:56.70 Well, there was a miracle and then eventually 00:11:56.73\00:11:59.08 I made that calling to accept Jesus and follow Him. 00:11:59.11\00:12:02.20 Have we all gone through something like that? 00:12:02.23\00:12:04.11 Yes. I mean, you sense God's presence in your life. 00:12:04.14\00:12:08.39 It's like me sensing the call to ministry. 00:12:08.42\00:12:10.80 It took quite sometime for me to really sense that yes, 00:12:10.83\00:12:14.46 I should be in ministry. This is where I belong. 00:12:14.49\00:12:16.70 But I remember going and praying one particular day, 00:12:16.73\00:12:20.16 taking time and praying about this 00:12:20.19\00:12:21.83 and feeling convicted that God wanted me 00:12:21.86\00:12:24.48 to be a minister of the Gospel. 00:12:24.51\00:12:26.48 And thanks to God, I've been faithful to that idea 00:12:26.51\00:12:30.63 ever since then and have had a wonderful ministry 00:12:30.66\00:12:34.01 that I've been involved in. 00:12:34.04\00:12:35.41 So that's where Peter starts, you know? 00:12:35.44\00:12:36.81 He gets this ministry involved. 00:12:36.84\00:12:38.21 And the most important one would be the human response, 00:12:38.24\00:12:41.15 you know, because God makes miracles all the time. 00:12:41.18\00:12:42.74 And do we see a theophany throughout the Bible, 00:12:42.77\00:12:44.99 not just the New Testament? Yes. 00:12:45.02\00:12:46.39 We've been watching for those theophanies 00:12:46.42\00:12:47.81 and then do we let them have that experience 00:12:47.84\00:12:50.33 of changing our life and moving us forward. 00:12:50.36\00:12:53.09 So Peter then is writing to these people. 00:12:53.12\00:12:56.63 Who are these people right? 00:12:56.66\00:12:58.03 We said last time, these are Jews. 00:12:58.06\00:12:59.43 Probably Jews and Gentiles. 00:12:59.46\00:13:00.83 They live in what is today present day Turkey. 00:13:00.86\00:13:03.24 That area of the world actually 00:13:03.27\00:13:04.74 became a very important center for Christianity. 00:13:04.77\00:13:09.15 It had a good growth of Christianity. 00:13:09.18\00:13:12.11 And early Christianity was very strong 00:13:12.14\00:13:15.04 in that area of the world. 00:13:15.07\00:13:16.51 So these are Jews and Gentiles. 00:13:16.54\00:13:17.91 They are living mainly in rural areas. 00:13:17.94\00:13:20.68 They are separate from the world around them, 00:13:20.71\00:13:22.89 because their practices are of 00:13:22.92\00:13:27.31 what we read in the Bible, you know? 00:13:27.34\00:13:28.98 They were not doing the kind of pagan practices 00:13:29.01\00:13:31.27 that were around them. 00:13:31.30\00:13:32.67 So they didn't fit in to the kind of people 00:13:32.70\00:13:36.41 that were their neighbors. 00:13:36.44\00:13:38.31 They didn't fit well with them. Okay. 00:13:38.34\00:13:40.88 And, Dr. Shepherd, I'm looking forward 00:13:40.91\00:13:42.28 to hearing more of these people 00:13:42.31\00:13:43.90 whom Peter is writing to. 00:13:43.93\00:13:46.37 We're gonna take a very brief pause. 00:13:46.40\00:13:49.05 After this just join us as we continue 00:13:49.08\00:13:51.52 studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:13:51.55\00:13:53.86
