Hello, friends, and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.68\00:00:25.45 Do you believe that the word of God has power. 00:00:25.49\00:00:28.12 If you are not too sure of that answer 00:00:28.16\00:00:30.06 please join us as we take a look at this very interesting topic 00:00:30.09\00:00:33.90 here in the first book of Peter. 00:00:33.93\00:00:36.03 And joining me is Dr. Shepherd. 00:00:36.06\00:00:38.67 Dr. Shepherd, last time we were talking- 00:00:38.70\00:00:40.24 last program we were talking about the secret to holiness. 00:00:40.27\00:00:42.94 Yes. 00:00:42.97\00:00:44.34 What's this idea of holiness and how do we get it? 00:00:44.37\00:00:46.57 Yes. 00:00:46.61\00:00:47.98 We didn't quite finish here everything up there 00:00:48.01\00:00:49.91 and it actually might be best to show the graphic 00:00:49.94\00:00:53.68 that we have to go along with this. 00:00:53.72\00:00:55.55 It helps us to see this in relationship 00:00:55.58\00:00:57.72 to two different roles that God has in our world. 00:00:57.75\00:01:01.39 So we just put this graphic up. You'll see two truths about God. 00:01:01.42\00:01:05.93 The one on the left mention here is "Impartial Justice" 00:01:05.96\00:01:09.30 and the one on the right is "Unmerited Grace". 00:01:09.33\00:01:11.70 God has both of these characteristics. 00:01:11.73\00:01:13.37 You remember when we met last time 00:01:13.40\00:01:15.27 we talked about God as the judge. 00:01:15.30\00:01:18.07 He impartially judges. 00:01:18.11\00:01:19.71 Well, His unmerited grace speaks to us about His power to act, 00:01:19.74\00:01:24.38 to save us, the saving relationship we have with Him. 00:01:24.41\00:01:27.62 The individual value we have to Him 00:01:27.65\00:01:29.88 and it's a reminder of our connection with Him. 00:01:29.92\00:01:32.95 But when we think of Him as judge, 00:01:32.99\00:01:35.09 there are consequences to our actions. 00:01:35.12\00:01:37.89 And it talks about a broken relationship 00:01:37.93\00:01:40.26 if you get that negative judgment 00:01:40.30\00:01:42.03 and the responsibility that you have towards God 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.90 and what happens if you forget to take 00:01:44.93\00:01:48.30 this relationship with God seriously. 00:01:48.34\00:01:51.34 So the power to holiness really comes from the God. 00:01:51.37\00:01:55.34 What is our part? 00:01:55.38\00:01:56.75 Our part is to be sensitive to respond. 00:01:56.78\00:01:58.61 Remember He says to be completely awake, 00:01:58.65\00:02:00.92 to be willing to and accept the power that He sends our way. 00:02:00.95\00:02:06.19 If we do not, Peter warns us 00:02:06.22\00:02:08.86 that there are consequences to that. 00:02:08.89\00:02:10.63 That's why He, you could say, 00:02:10.66\00:02:13.36 He has the carrot and the stick, you know, 00:02:13.40\00:02:15.30 the stick is regard as the judge but the carrot is that-that 00:02:15.33\00:02:18.70 He has His grace there that gives you the new birth, 00:02:18.73\00:02:21.50 that gives you the power to be obedient to Him. 00:02:21.54\00:02:25.17 But we are not really done with this because 00:02:25.21\00:02:27.44 the following verses all the way- 00:02:27.48\00:02:29.78 or you could really say all the way through 00:02:29.81\00:02:31.51 chapter 2 verse 10 which were eventually going to arrive at, 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.78 but all the way through he sets up 00:02:34.82\00:02:37.55 the series of depictions of Christian life. 00:02:37.59\00:02:41.79 We say metaphors of Christian life. 00:02:41.82\00:02:44.59 And from chapter 1 verse 18 through chapter 2 verse 3, 00:02:44.63\00:02:50.10 He has 3 pairs a fall, 3 pairs of mixed metaphors. 00:02:50.13\00:02:57.01 So that's a total of 6 metaphors. 00:02:57.04\00:02:59.77 3 pairs of metaphors. 00:02:59.81\00:03:02.98 And the pairs don't match, they are mixed metaphors. 00:03:03.01\00:03:08.65 Now we might be kind of a little upset with him and say, 00:03:08.68\00:03:11.12 "Peter wanted to mixture metaphors using keep them, 00:03:11.15\00:03:14.02 you know, going down the same path, you know." 00:03:14.06\00:03:16.69 But he just did okay. 00:03:16.73\00:03:18.63 And we can draw some knowledge of what he is doing. 00:03:18.66\00:03:22.63 So let's read verses 18-21 again that comes 00:03:22.66\00:03:26.50 from the first-the last section but it really fits 00:03:26.53\00:03:29.74 with this section and understand this metaphors. 00:03:29.77\00:03:34.24 "Knowing that you were not redeemed 00:03:34.28\00:03:35.84 with corruptible things, like silver or gold 00:03:35.88\00:03:38.48 from your aimless conduct received by tradition 00:03:38.51\00:03:40.98 from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, 00:03:41.02\00:03:45.05 as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 00:03:45.09\00:03:48.16 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation 00:03:48.19\00:03:50.89 of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. 00:03:50.93\00:03:56.53 Who through Him believe in God who raised him 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.57 from the dead and gave Him glory, 00:03:59.60\00:04:02.00 so that your faith and hope are in God." 00:04:02.04\00:04:05.04 All right. 00:04:05.07\00:04:06.44 So again he is reminding the Christians of the importance 00:04:06.47\00:04:09.31 of obedience, the importance of being serious 00:04:09.34\00:04:12.35 about this relationship with God. 00:04:12.38\00:04:14.35 And he says, "you need to remember, 00:04:14.38\00:04:17.29 you need to know that you are ransomed 00:04:17.32\00:04:20.42 from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, 00:04:20.46\00:04:24.76 not with perishable things like silver or gold." 00:04:24.79\00:04:28.30 So the first metaphors he uses is the metaphor of redemption. 00:04:28.33\00:04:34.04 Now we have made this into-it's okay, 00:04:34.07\00:04:37.27 but we have made this in to a religious word. 00:04:37.31\00:04:40.38 But the word redemption in that time was a slave market word. 00:04:40.41\00:04:45.98 And to be redeemed was to be bought back. 00:04:46.01\00:04:50.32 And there are three ideas that are inherent 00:04:50.35\00:04:52.42 within the concept of slavery, of this idea of redemption. 00:04:52.45\00:04:58.36 There is the state of slavery, 00:04:58.39\00:05:02.26 there is the act of being set free 00:05:02.30\00:05:06.67 and there is the price that was paid. 00:05:06.70\00:05:08.97 Okay. 00:05:09.00\00:05:10.37 So the state of slavery is slavery- 00:05:10.41\00:05:13.81 let's say slavery to sin. 00:05:13.84\00:05:15.81 Peter calls it the futile ways of- 00:05:15.84\00:05:20.72 inherited from your forefathers. 00:05:20.75\00:05:23.05 Okay. 00:05:23.08\00:05:24.45 That was the slavery that held you. 00:05:24.49\00:05:27.29 Now this is again kind of oxymoron for Peter 00:05:27.32\00:05:30.46 to use here because the ways in a traditional culture, 00:05:30.49\00:05:34.10 the ways that you wouldn't heard 00:05:34.10\00:05:35.46 from your forefathers were very positive. 00:05:35.50\00:05:38.60 You-these are the traditions that your forefathers 00:05:38.63\00:05:41.40 have passed on to you and these things 00:05:41.44\00:05:44.74 that you would value highly. 00:05:44.77\00:05:46.74 And he calls them futile. 00:05:46.78\00:05:49.01 So he is teaching them- they have rejected 00:05:49.04\00:05:52.68 the ways of the past, they've rejected the pagan ways. 00:05:52.71\00:05:55.08 This is a big change of life 00:05:55.12\00:05:57.02 that has happened for these people. 00:05:57.05\00:05:58.79 And Peter says, "You will redeem from those. 00:05:58.82\00:06:02.02 You thought it was so good, you thought it was something 00:06:02.06\00:06:04.43 you should value, it was destroying you." 00:06:04.46\00:06:07.46 You see? 00:06:07.50\00:06:08.83 And so that's the first metaphors 00:06:08.86\00:06:10.47 the metaphors of redemption. 00:06:10.50\00:06:12.10 Well, then he mixes it because he goes in to the next verse, 00:06:12.13\00:06:17.04 he talks about the precious blood of Christ in verse 19. 00:06:17.07\00:06:21.64 "Like that of a lamb without blemish or spot." 00:06:21.68\00:06:26.38 Okay? 00:06:26.41\00:06:27.78 So here is a sacrificial metaphor. 00:06:27.82\00:06:32.05 He is talking about Christ as though he was a lamb. 00:06:32.09\00:06:36.76 And again this links us back into the Old Testament concepts. 00:06:36.79\00:06:44.57 The Old Testament sacrificial service, 00:06:44.60\00:06:46.84 where if somebody did something wrong 00:06:46.87\00:06:49.00 they had to bring a lamb or goat or ox or something 00:06:49.04\00:06:53.27 and they would sacrifice it, they would kill it. 00:06:53.31\00:06:56.28 And then the blood of that animal 00:06:56.31\00:06:58.18 would be sprinkled in the sanctuary. 00:06:58.21\00:07:00.28 Of course this was pointing forward 00:07:00.32\00:07:02.55 to the great sacrifice that Christ would give. 00:07:02.58\00:07:05.35 That's what Peter says, "He is like a lamb 00:07:05.39\00:07:08.12 without spot and without blemish." 00:07:08.16\00:07:10.33 He is that perfect lamb that protects you or saved you. 00:07:10.36\00:07:13.90 It's like the Passover, when the Passover lamb 00:07:13.93\00:07:16.67 was offered they would kill the lamb, 00:07:16.70\00:07:18.67 they'd take the blood, 00:07:18.70\00:07:20.07 and they put it on the door posts of the house. 00:07:20.10\00:07:23.07 And when the angel came that night 00:07:23.10\00:07:25.57 to destroy all the first born 00:07:25.61\00:07:27.34 the angel would see the blood on the door 00:07:27.38\00:07:30.15 and would Passover that house and not kill the first born. 00:07:30.18\00:07:33.92 So it was a saving experience but it cost something. 00:07:33.95\00:07:39.75 And so when the cost was the precious blood of Jesus. 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.59 And it's kind of funny, you know, he says, 00:07:42.62\00:07:46.49 "You were ransomed from your futile ways 00:07:46.53\00:07:49.83 not with perishable things such as silver and gold." 00:07:49.86\00:07:52.57 Now of all things you in our world, 00:07:52.60\00:07:57.47 there are two things that are considered imperishable. 00:07:57.51\00:08:03.04 And they are silver and particularly gold 00:08:03.08\00:08:06.88 because gold doesn't lose its luster, you know. 00:08:06.92\00:08:10.75 Some medals, they will give lusty or they will tarnish 00:08:10.79\00:08:14.02 or something, but not gold, it always shines. 00:08:14.06\00:08:17.16 Especially, nowadays that the economy 00:08:17.19\00:08:18.69 isn't so- not doing very good. 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.70 People are going after the imperishable. 00:08:20.73\00:08:24.13 That they say, you know it's something you can hang on to. 00:08:24.17\00:08:27.67 And Peter is kind of like saying, 00:08:27.70\00:08:29.24 "Is that the best you got? That's not gonna save you. 00:08:29.27\00:08:33.78 That doesn't help you." 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.44 You see there is nothing we can do 00:08:35.48\00:08:39.25 to save ourselves from the pit of sin. 00:08:39.28\00:08:41.88 I heard one time about a man, when-it's a poor, sad, 00:08:41.92\00:08:47.39 sad story, but when he died he had them put 00:08:47.42\00:08:51.39 his tithe of receipts in his pocket of his suit. 00:08:51.43\00:08:56.26 And think about that. 00:08:56.30\00:08:58.00 Put your tithe receipts in the pocket of your suit. 00:08:58.03\00:09:01.10 Are you gonna show these to the God? 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.71 You know what, when the time comes 00:09:03.74\00:09:05.21 you're gonna say, "But I gave 40 years of tithe." 00:09:05.24\00:09:08.74 I'm sorry, that cannot save you. Gold, silver it cannot do. 00:09:08.78\00:09:13.28 Only the precious blood of Jesus can do that, you see. 00:09:13.31\00:09:16.28 So that's the first metaphor that he brings to us 00:09:16.32\00:09:19.59 "The precious blood of Christ". 00:09:19.62\00:09:21.16 And in verse 20 he says, "He was foreknown before 00:09:21.19\00:09:23.66 the foundation of the world, but was made manifest 00:09:23.69\00:09:26.29 in the last times for the sake of you." 00:09:26.33\00:09:28.66 Notice it's very cosmic, it goes all the way back 00:09:28.70\00:09:31.10 to the beginning, before the beginning in other word 00:09:31.13\00:09:34.44 and it goes down to the last times. 00:09:34.47\00:09:36.34 So it's this cosmic great controversy picture. 00:09:36.37\00:09:39.87 All of time is encompassed by the sacrifice of Christ. 00:09:39.91\00:09:43.81 "And he is foreknown before them, 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.58 but manifested now who through Him 00:09:46.61\00:09:49.55 you are believers in God, who raised him from the dead." 00:09:49.58\00:09:52.19 Notice there the emphasis again on the resurrection, 00:09:52.22\00:09:55.96 the importance of the resurrection. 00:09:55.99\00:09:57.36 It's an interesting study to go through 00:09:57.39\00:09:59.46 and trying to see, you know, 00:09:59.49\00:10:02.43 where the New Testament talks about the resurrection. 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.80 You will find it in places you wouldn't expect sometimes. 00:10:05.83\00:10:09.37 And here again the resurrection of Jesus 00:10:09.40\00:10:13.11 is the affirmation of our belief in him. 00:10:13.14\00:10:16.41 God raised him from the dead and gave him glory. 00:10:16.44\00:10:19.38 Set your faith and hope in God. 00:10:19.41\00:10:22.62 So that's the first set of metaphors 00:10:22.65\00:10:25.29 The redemption metaphor combined 00:10:25.32\00:10:27.32 with the sacrificial metaphor of Jesus as the lamb. 00:10:27.36\00:10:32.36 Well, Dr. Shepherd, should we continue on the next verse? 00:10:32.39\00:10:35.56 Yeah. Why don't we read verses 23-25. 00:10:35.60\00:10:39.87 I think we skipped 22, didn't we? 00:10:39.90\00:10:41.57 22, I'm sorry. You are exactly right. 00:10:41.60\00:10:43.37 "Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth 00:10:43.41\00:10:46.44 through the spirit in sincere love of the brethren, 00:10:46.47\00:10:49.44 love one another fervently with a pure heart. 00:10:49.48\00:10:52.65 Having been born again, not of corruptible seed, 00:10:52.68\00:10:54.95 but of incorruptible, through the word of God, 00:10:54.98\00:10:57.09 which lives and abides forever." 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.82 Now here it says, since you have purified your souls, 00:10:59.85\00:11:05.29 what is this mean, purified your souls? 00:11:05.33\00:11:09.46 Well, we can refer back to verse 2 00:11:09.50\00:11:12.10 that we read earlier, chapter 1:2. 00:11:12.13\00:11:15.20 That says, "According to the foreknowledge 00:11:15.24\00:11:16.91 of God the father in the sanctification 00:11:16.94\00:11:19.14 of the spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ 00:11:19.17\00:11:22.18 and for the sprinkling with His blood." 00:11:22.21\00:11:24.11 So obedience and sprinkling, put together, okay? 00:11:24.15\00:11:26.95 So you purified your souls by your obedience to the truth. 00:11:26.98\00:11:31.72 There is this truth about salvation that comes in Christ. 00:11:31.75\00:11:35.49 And so there is a really cool word for this. 00:11:35.52\00:11:40.06 When you have two terms that refer 00:11:40.10\00:11:42.13 to the same thing is called hendiadys. 00:11:42.16\00:11:45.83 You like that word? Is that a Greek word? 00:11:45.87\00:11:47.74 Yeah. Okay. 00:11:47.77\00:11:49.14 Hendiadys. Hendiadys. 00:11:49.17\00:11:50.74 It actually means hen, is the word one, 00:11:50.77\00:11:53.68 dia is the word through and dy is the word two. 00:11:53.71\00:11:58.11 Dys is two. One through two? 00:11:58.15\00:12:00.25 I'm trying to make sense of it. 00:12:00.28\00:12:01.65 One through two, you're saying one thing using two terms. 00:12:01.68\00:12:03.59 Oh, okay. Okay. 00:12:03.62\00:12:04.99 So when you have this idea of obedience and sprinkling 00:12:05.02\00:12:11.13 that's a hendiadys to refer to making a covenant 00:12:11.16\00:12:13.70 with God, that you have become His children 00:12:13.73\00:12:16.50 through making this covenant, that He has becomes your father, 00:12:16.53\00:12:19.33 you becomes His child. Okay. 00:12:19.37\00:12:21.67 So you know sometime you can say we were just discussing 00:12:21.70\00:12:24.34 the hendiadys of covenant with God, you know. 00:12:24.37\00:12:28.04 Sounds pretty cool you know. 00:12:28.08\00:12:29.44 But you can go look it up in the dictionary. 00:12:29.48\00:12:32.08 It begins with hen like the word hen like the one 00:12:32.11\00:12:34.85 that went around on that on the farm yard, hendiadys. 00:12:34.88\00:12:38.42 Okay. So that is the idea of this purification 00:12:38.45\00:12:43.09 of your souls through your obedience, 00:12:43.12\00:12:45.49 to the truth you are making this covenant with God, 00:12:45.53\00:12:49.46 and he says that it produces a sincere brotherly love. 00:12:49.50\00:12:53.50 You have to love one another earnestly from a pure heart. 00:12:53.54\00:12:58.84 This is about the practical relationship 00:12:58.87\00:13:02.38 or the practical ideas that come out 00:13:02.41\00:13:07.45 of a saving relationship with God. 00:13:07.48\00:13:11.05 Some people think that- I don't know, 00:13:11.09\00:13:13.96 they get the idea that is saving relationship 00:13:13.99\00:13:17.09 doesn't have to have any practical implications. 00:13:17.13\00:13:21.80 That they can be saved by grace and be mean to their brother. 00:13:21.83\00:13:29.57 Peter says, "No, you can't do that." 00:13:29.60\00:13:32.84 If you are mean to people, 00:13:32.87\00:13:35.41 you are not in the right saving relationship with Jesus. 00:13:35.44\00:13:38.18 You are not following what he has taught you to do. 00:13:38.21\00:13:41.22 You are not living out what He has given you. 00:13:41.25\00:13:44.22 You see, by grace- He has given you that grace 00:13:44.25\00:13:46.55 so now, you must treat other people differently. 00:13:46.59\00:13:50.53 Grace is a new set of glasses 00:13:50.56\00:13:53.80 that we cannot look at in a different way. 00:13:53.83\00:13:56.87 We'll have to come back to this after a short break. 00:13:56.90\00:13:59.57
