And welcome back friends to "Books of the Book" 00:00:01.33\00:00:03.13 with me is Dr. Shepherd. 00:00:03.16\00:00:04.73 He is joining us in this study of first and second period. 00:00:04.77\00:00:08.40 Dr. Shepherd quick question. 00:00:08.44\00:00:10.27 What does obedience have to do with holiness? 00:00:10.31\00:00:13.58 All right. Well, we were looking here in verse 14. 00:00:13.61\00:00:16.91 It says, "As obedient children, do not be conformed 00:00:16.95\00:00:20.08 to the passions of your former ignorance." 00:00:20.12\00:00:21.85 We notice that he stresses that they are children, 00:00:21.88\00:00:24.65 they are--God is their father, they are his children. 00:00:24.69\00:00:27.26 He says, household of faith. 00:00:27.29\00:00:28.72 So he reminds them of that covenant 00:00:28.76\00:00:30.49 that they have made with God, 00:00:30.53\00:00:31.89 that linkage that they have to God. 00:00:31.93\00:00:33.83 And then he bolsters this whole concept of linkage 00:00:33.86\00:00:38.17 to God of the idea of-- the covenants of idea 00:00:38.20\00:00:43.54 with a reference to that which is holy. 00:00:43.57\00:00:45.87 So in verse 15, he says 00:00:45.91\00:00:47.98 "But as he who called you is holy, 00:00:48.01\00:00:50.78 you also be holy in all your conduct." 00:00:50.81\00:00:55.12 Since it is written verse 16, 00:00:55.15\00:00:57.39 "You shall be holy for I am holy." 00:00:57.42\00:00:59.89 He is quoting from Leviticus 19:2 00:00:59.92\00:01:04.36 part of the holiness code of the Old Testament. 00:01:04.39\00:01:07.50 And you look at this and you see that there is this concept 00:01:07.50\00:01:12.10 of emulation or following the pattern. 00:01:12.13\00:01:15.90 God is holy so that's what you have to do. 00:01:15.94\00:01:20.84 It's like carpenter building something 00:01:20.88\00:01:23.91 and showing his apprentice and the apprentice look at it 00:01:23.95\00:01:26.28 and measures it and takes in, 00:01:26.31\00:01:28.38 tries to make his just like the master carpenter did. 00:01:28.42\00:01:31.52 He tries to do things just the same way. 00:01:31.55\00:01:34.29 Or like a child walking on the beach 00:01:34.32\00:01:37.46 and his father footsteps are big and far apart 00:01:37.49\00:01:40.40 and he tries to reach his foot and reach his next foot, 00:01:40.43\00:01:43.60 so that he can walk in the footsteps of his father. 00:01:43.63\00:01:46.43 So because you are in covenant with God, 00:01:46.47\00:01:50.21 because He is your father, because you are His children 00:01:50.24\00:01:53.38 and you remember you agreed to obey. 00:01:53.41\00:01:55.78 All right, because you are His obedient child, 00:01:55.81\00:01:58.15 then you are to live a holy life just like He did, okay. 00:01:58.18\00:02:02.52 Of course, he is not really done. 00:02:02.55\00:02:04.89 That's not the only thing that he mentions, 00:02:04.92\00:02:07.22 his this idea of holiness, okay. 00:02:07.26\00:02:09.42 So why don't you read for us verse 17. 00:02:09.46\00:02:13.33 "And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges 00:02:13.36\00:02:16.97 according to each one's work, conduct yourselves 00:02:17.00\00:02:20.60 throughout the time of your stay here in fear, 00:02:20.64\00:02:24.34 knowing that you were not redeemed 00:02:24.37\00:02:26.24 with corruptible things like silver or gold 00:02:26.27\00:02:29.61 from your aimless conduct recede by tradition from your fathers, 00:02:29.64\00:02:33.92 but with the precious blood of Christ, 00:02:33.95\00:02:36.08 as of a lamb without blemish and without spot." 00:02:36.12\00:02:41.06 Okay, that was a little more than verse 16 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.29 but that's of 17, but that's okay. 00:02:43.32\00:02:45.59 That's all right we went forward just a little bit 00:02:45.63\00:02:47.40 and we'll fill all that in, okay. 00:02:47.46\00:02:49.23 So, he starts of-- so how has he argued already. 00:02:49.26\00:02:53.23 He has argued that because of-- he starts verse 13 00:02:53.27\00:02:58.54 with therefore that is in light of all the things 00:02:58.57\00:03:02.51 that we've talked about before. 00:03:02.54\00:03:04.71 Now, you must be totally ready for action, 00:03:04.75\00:03:09.55 your obedient children and so you are 00:03:09.58\00:03:11.49 not to conform you self to old way. 00:03:11.52\00:03:13.39 But you are supposed to be holy 00:03:13.42\00:03:15.52 because the God you serve is holy, all right. 00:03:15.56\00:03:19.19 Then in verse 17, he says "And if you call on him 00:03:19.23\00:03:23.23 as father" well, that's what Jesus taught us to do as a man. 00:03:23.26\00:03:29.60 He said when you pray say, our Father, 00:03:29.64\00:03:33.81 which art in heaven, all right. 00:03:33.84\00:03:36.18 Now often when we say the Lord's prayer 00:03:36.21\00:03:38.38 and I have to say, I don't think we say the Lord's prayer enough 00:03:38.41\00:03:41.72 in the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:03:41.75\00:03:43.39 I think we need to say the Lord's prayer 00:03:43.42\00:03:44.85 more often than we do. 00:03:44.89\00:03:47.62 But when we say the Lords prayer, 00:03:47.66\00:03:51.36 it sort of just rolls off of our tongue little you know, 00:03:51.39\00:03:53.80 Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be the name. 00:03:53.83\00:03:56.06 You know, and we say it almost in rote fashion 00:03:56.10\00:04:01.04 where in actuality to call Him Father is very meaningful. 00:04:01.07\00:04:06.31 Which is exactly what Peter means here. 00:04:06.34\00:04:09.01 He says "What does it mean to call God your Father." 00:04:09.04\00:04:14.82 Well here's what that means. 00:04:14.85\00:04:16.65 "If you call on Him as Father who judges impartially 00:04:16.69\00:04:21.09 according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves 00:04:21.12\00:04:23.83 with fear throughout the time of your exile." 00:04:23.86\00:04:28.00 Now, God is the judge of the world, you see, 00:04:28.03\00:04:32.50 and you cannot just leave the God out of things 00:04:32.53\00:04:37.31 and not take Him into account, all right. 00:04:37.34\00:04:39.71 So he says, "He judges the world impartially." 00:04:39.74\00:04:43.81 This term impartial is very interesting. 00:04:43.85\00:04:46.45 It's the concept of not-- it's an Old Testament idiom. 00:04:46.48\00:04:53.46 Not receiving the face. Not receiving the face? 00:04:53.49\00:04:57.39 The face, yeah. Which is--? 00:04:57.43\00:04:59.43 Is it one of those of other idioms? 00:04:59.46\00:05:01.16 Yeah, it's a strange kind of idiom we think that, 00:05:01.20\00:05:03.53 not receiving the face? Okay. 00:05:03.57\00:05:05.30 But it goes like this, if a judge was sitting 00:05:05.33\00:05:08.94 in the gate, you know, that's where 00:05:08.97\00:05:10.34 they have their judge, the judges there. 00:05:10.37\00:05:11.97 And somebody came up to him and said look there's going 00:05:12.01\00:05:16.04 to be a court case here in front of you in just a few hours. 00:05:16.08\00:05:19.98 And I want you to rule in my favor 00:05:20.02\00:05:22.68 and he gifts the judge some money. 00:05:22.72\00:05:25.12 He bribes him. Okay. 00:05:25.15\00:05:27.12 Then when they come before him turned off 00:05:27.16\00:05:30.23 it's this very guy who gave him money 00:05:30.26\00:05:32.13 and there is another man. 00:05:32.16\00:05:34.63 And the judge smiles at the guy who gave him the money. 00:05:34.66\00:05:38.57 Its just I am sure that your position is the right one, 00:05:38.60\00:05:43.27 he has received his face, he took a bribe, you see. 00:05:43.30\00:05:47.48 He wasn't impartial between the two, all right. 00:05:47.51\00:05:50.78 So Peter says, God is not like that. 00:05:50.81\00:05:54.15 You cannot bribe God. 00:05:54.18\00:05:56.45 He does not receive the face. 00:05:56.48\00:05:58.49 And if you think by calling him Father 00:05:58.52\00:06:02.32 that somehow you have curried favor with Him 00:06:02.36\00:06:05.23 and you don't have to really be obedient, 00:06:05.26\00:06:07.46 you can kind of play fast and loose with this whole thing. 00:06:07.50\00:06:12.80 Peter says, that's not going to work with God. 00:06:12.83\00:06:15.84 See, He judges every one impartially 00:06:15.87\00:06:19.67 according to his deeds. 00:06:19.71\00:06:22.14 Now this gets some people upset and they say, what? 00:06:22.18\00:06:25.98 I thought we were saved by faith. 00:06:26.01\00:06:28.38 Aren't we saved by faith? That's right. 00:06:28.42\00:06:30.12 Yes. Then why are we judged? 00:06:30.15\00:06:32.09 Why does Peter say that we are judge by our deeds? 00:06:32.12\00:06:35.19 Well, he is not the only one that says it. 00:06:35.22\00:06:37.59 Turn to 2 Corinthians 5:10. 2 Corinthians 5:10. 00:06:37.63\00:06:43.53 This is a very important idea. 2 Corinthians 5:10. 00:06:43.57\00:06:50.71 The Apostle Paul is talking about our heavenly home 00:06:50.74\00:06:55.81 and our bodies that we'll have in resurrection. 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.75 And then he talks about when that will all takes place. 00:06:58.78\00:07:00.75 Read it. Okay. 00:07:00.78\00:07:02.15 "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ 00:07:02.18\00:07:05.42 that each one may receive the things done in the body 00:07:05.45\00:07:08.76 according to what he has done whether good or bad." 00:07:08.79\00:07:12.69 Right, this is talking about judgment, isn't it? 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.30 It is. The judgment seat of Christ 00:07:14.30\00:07:16.20 and how we will be judged? 00:07:16.23\00:07:18.03 According to what we have done. What we have done. 00:07:18.07\00:07:22.07 What we have done or what we have not done. 00:07:22.10\00:07:24.31 Okay. So we are judge by deeds. 00:07:24.34\00:07:26.31 Somebody says, I don't understand. 00:07:26.34\00:07:28.74 How can you be saved by faith but judged by your deed? 00:07:28.78\00:07:33.88 Well this actually has more to do 00:07:33.92\00:07:35.52 with the biblical teaching about anthropology. 00:07:35.55\00:07:39.25 What is human being is like then it does with the in essence, 00:07:39.29\00:07:42.79 but then it does with the doctrine of salvation. 00:07:42.82\00:07:45.39 That is to say the Bible concept 00:07:45.43\00:07:48.86 of a human being is that we are a whole. 00:07:48.90\00:07:53.10 You--as we sometime say, you do not have a soul. 00:07:53.13\00:07:56.67 What you are a soul. All right. 00:07:56.71\00:07:59.41 The combination of the dust of the earth and the breath 00:07:59.44\00:08:02.74 of life from God creates a living soul. 00:08:02.78\00:08:05.65 Now we tend to think of this in terms 00:08:05.68\00:08:07.78 of what happens when you die, 00:08:07.82\00:08:09.25 that you rest in the grave till Jesus comes. 00:08:09.28\00:08:11.49 But it has many more implications than that. 00:08:11.52\00:08:14.16 And one of the important implications is that 00:08:14.19\00:08:18.23 your faith in your life, in your heart, 00:08:18.26\00:08:21.33 will and must show itself in action, 00:08:21.36\00:08:24.63 it must display itself in deeds. 00:08:24.67\00:08:28.47 If you have faith on the inside, it will show itself 00:08:28.50\00:08:32.17 on the outside by loving acts of kindness towards others. 00:08:32.21\00:08:35.94 When Jesus comes back, He is not gonna say to you, 00:08:35.98\00:08:38.21 did you believe in the Sabbath. 00:08:38.25\00:08:40.75 Did you believe in the righteousness by faith? 00:08:40.78\00:08:43.39 Did you believe in the trinity? 00:08:43.42\00:08:46.02 Did you--He's not going to ask you what you believed. 00:08:46.05\00:08:49.29 He's gonna ask you what you did. 00:08:49.32\00:08:52.23 He said, I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. 00:08:52.26\00:08:56.67 I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink. 00:08:56.70\00:09:00.27 I was in prison you came and visited me. 00:09:00.30\00:09:02.84 I was sick and you ministered to me. 00:09:02.87\00:09:05.61 Because our actions are an expression 00:09:05.64\00:09:08.71 of our faith or lack thereof. 00:09:08.74\00:09:12.01 So God judges us by our deeds. 00:09:12.05\00:09:14.88 Now, we better press on here to get some more 00:09:14.92\00:09:17.19 of the message here that listed so. 00:09:17.22\00:09:20.22 He says, "You are supposed to conduct yourself 00:09:20.26\00:09:22.09 with fear throughout the time of your exile." 00:09:22.12\00:09:26.46 Does he mean that we're supposed to be afraid of God? 00:09:26.49\00:09:31.13 Well, if you have questions about the fear of God, 00:09:31.17\00:09:34.57 let me give you a text that gives you 20-20 vision. 00:09:34.60\00:09:37.91 Okay. Exodus 20:20. Exodus 20:20. 00:09:37.94\00:09:43.31 This is 20-20 vision on the fear of God. 00:09:43.35\00:09:47.92 Okay, we'll never forget that one. 00:09:47.95\00:09:49.95 "And Moses said to the people, 'Do not fear, 00:09:49.98\00:09:52.85 for God has come to test you, and that is fear 00:09:52.89\00:09:56.83 may be before you, so that you may not sin." 00:09:56.86\00:10:01.03 Now that sounds like double talk, doesn't it? 00:10:01.06\00:10:03.70 It sounds like he is saying, don't de afraid, just be afraid. 00:10:03.73\00:10:08.94 And then he goes there, yeah, 00:10:08.97\00:10:10.34 and then he says "And that his fear may be before you." 00:10:10.37\00:10:14.44 Now there are two kinds of fear. Okay. 00:10:14.48\00:10:17.01 There is a fear that draws you away from God, 00:10:17.05\00:10:21.02 because He is so powerful, and He is so holy, okay. 00:10:21.05\00:10:25.79 And then there is a fear that draws you to God, 00:10:25.82\00:10:28.69 draws you close to God, draws you next to Him, 00:10:28.72\00:10:31.86 all right. This is the fear of the Lord. 00:10:31.89\00:10:35.06 Now, is there someone they are trembling in there, yes. 00:10:35.10\00:10:37.53 You know, He is God. 00:10:37.57\00:10:39.60 He is your Father, He is not some sugar daddy 00:10:39.63\00:10:42.74 or some thing you know. 00:10:42.77\00:10:45.37 And so, you must respect Him. 00:10:45.41\00:10:47.91 You must have deep reference for Him. 00:10:47.94\00:10:50.71 This is best illustrated perhaps by the story of Joseph. 00:10:50.75\00:10:56.02 In Genesis Chapter 39, Joseph was tempted by Potiphar's wife. 00:10:56.05\00:11:03.96 She said, come to bed with me. 00:11:03.99\00:11:06.19 Now for our Hollywood movie, the next scene would be 00:11:06.23\00:11:08.70 in the bedroom, but not in the case of Joseph. 00:11:08.73\00:11:12.27 And he gives her little speech. 00:11:12.30\00:11:14.77 He says to her, you know, I respect my master 00:11:14.80\00:11:18.34 he's given--he's put all things into my power and my control 00:11:18.37\00:11:22.28 and there is no one greater in this house 00:11:22.31\00:11:23.95 than I am except for him. 00:11:23.98\00:11:26.41 And he has not withheld anything from the except you 00:11:26.45\00:11:30.49 because you are his wife. 00:11:30.52\00:11:31.89 He reminds her who she is, and he then says, 00:11:31.92\00:11:37.59 how could I do this great sin-- Against God. 00:11:37.63\00:11:42.83 Against God. So he speaks of his master. 00:11:42.86\00:11:46.67 He speaks of his masters' wife. 00:11:46.70\00:11:48.24 He speaks of his relationship to his master and her. 00:11:48.27\00:11:53.74 But then he places it all within his relationship to God, 00:11:53.78\00:11:57.31 he lived in the presence of God. 00:11:57.35\00:12:01.62 That was the fear the Lord. 00:12:01.65\00:12:03.02 He said I, I cannot do this, because it would be, 00:12:03.05\00:12:08.16 you know, it would not be right, it would be so wrong. 00:12:08.19\00:12:10.89 So that's what he says here that you are supposed 00:12:10.93\00:12:14.56 to live your life in fear and notice 00:12:14.60\00:12:18.40 what he calls your life here in verse 17. 00:12:18.43\00:12:23.54 "The time of your exile." 00:12:23.57\00:12:27.08 It's the time of your pilgrimage. 00:12:27.11\00:12:28.61 He harks right to that words 00:12:28.64\00:12:30.65 that he had at the beginning of the book 00:12:30.68\00:12:32.08 when he called you a pilgrim, right. 00:12:32.11\00:12:34.85 That exile time that goes back. 00:12:34.88\00:12:37.49 You're to remember that you are not home yet, you are in exile. 00:12:37.52\00:12:41.89 You've to live in the fear of God. 00:12:41.92\00:12:44.03 So he is putting together, he is not finished yet. 00:12:44.06\00:12:46.39 We are not done with the entire passage 00:12:46.43\00:12:48.73 and we'll link this up with our next section 00:12:48.76\00:12:51.13 as we go into it, because verses 18 to 21 actually link 00:12:51.17\00:12:55.37 in to the following sections as well. 00:12:55.40\00:12:57.41 So we're going to talk about those verses. 00:12:57.44\00:12:59.64 But we will talk about them in our next time together. 00:12:59.67\00:13:02.44 And we will see how they all tie this up together 00:13:02.48\00:13:06.82 and making a very tight argument 00:13:06.85\00:13:09.05 about how we are supposed to live as Christians. 00:13:09.08\00:13:12.02 Well, Dr. Shepherd, thanks again for your insights 00:13:12.05\00:13:14.56 on this very interesting book First and Second Peter. 00:13:14.59\00:13:18.13 We often though study or read this book 00:13:18.16\00:13:20.60 as much as perhaps the gospels. 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.20 We need to do this much more. 00:13:22.23\00:13:23.73 But I invite everybody and I encourage 00:13:23.77\00:13:25.80 you to pickup the Bible, read the words that God has 00:13:25.83\00:13:29.20 for you and for me, God bless you. 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.41
