Welcome to "The Books of the Book." 00:00:21.95\00:00:23.69 The program that focuses on a deep Bible study 00:00:23.72\00:00:26.05 of the word of God. 00:00:26.09\00:00:27.46 will be taking a closer look at 1 Peter. 00:00:27.49\00:00:30.26 Bring out your Bibles, so you can join us 00:00:30.29\00:00:31.76 in this very interesting study. 00:00:31.79\00:00:33.93 And with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:33.96\00:00:35.70 He's a professor at the theological seminary 00:00:35.73\00:00:38.33 at Andrews university. Dr. Sheppard, welcome. 00:00:38.37\00:00:42.14 Before we begin our study I want to ask you this question 00:00:42.17\00:00:44.94 that I've been willing to ask you. 00:00:44.97\00:00:47.61 What's with the bow ties? Is there a story behind that? 00:00:47.64\00:00:52.21 I just started wearing bow ties probably 00:00:52.25\00:00:54.62 about 10 or 15 years ago-- kind of a personal signature 00:00:54.65\00:00:59.19 and sure enough I'm known as 00:00:59.22\00:01:01.42 the professor who wears bow ties. 00:01:01.46\00:01:03.59 If they say, "Oh, you have a class with Shepherd? 00:01:03.63\00:01:04.99 Shepherd, who is he?" "The one that wears bow ties." 00:01:05.03\00:01:07.66 Immediately, they know who I am. 00:01:07.66\00:01:09.06 The bow tie guy. The bow tie guy. 00:01:09.10\00:01:11.53 Well, what are we studying today? 00:01:11.57\00:01:13.47 What passage we would be looking at? 00:01:13.50\00:01:14.87 We'll be looking at 1 Peter 1:10-12 00:01:14.90\00:01:17.57 We should turn right there and get into the word of God. 00:01:17.61\00:01:20.34 1 Peter 1:10-12. This is what it says, 00:01:20.38\00:01:24.51 "Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied 00:01:24.55\00:01:28.62 about the grace that was to be yours searched 00:01:28.65\00:01:31.32 and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time 00:01:31.35\00:01:34.96 the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted 00:01:34.99\00:01:38.19 the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 00:01:38.23\00:01:41.93 It was revealed to them that they were not serving 00:01:41.96\00:01:44.63 not themselves but you, in the things that have now been 00:01:44.67\00:01:48.74 announced to you through those who preached the good news 00:01:48.77\00:01:51.14 to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, 00:01:51.17\00:01:53.44 things into which angels long to look." 00:01:53.48\00:01:56.71 Okay. Now how do these verses link up 00:01:56.75\00:01:59.05 with what we've been talking about before? 00:01:59.08\00:02:01.25 All right. So we started our study 00:02:01.28\00:02:03.42 with the first couple verses and we found 00:02:03.45\00:02:06.09 that the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:02:06.12\00:02:08.69 Actually, it says the Father, the Spirit, 00:02:08.72\00:02:10.53 and the Son are working for our salvation to draw us 00:02:10.56\00:02:14.10 to God that they have created a covenant with us. 00:02:14.10\00:02:19.40 That harks back to the Old Testament covenant 00:02:19.43\00:02:22.47 idea of the people of God with Him 00:02:22.50\00:02:26.01 at Mount Sinai that links them up. 00:02:26.04\00:02:29.14 Then He unpacks this through a description of the blessings 00:02:29.18\00:02:34.48 of rebirth where he talks about our past 00:02:34.52\00:02:39.42 and then the experience of the hope and the inheritance 00:02:39.45\00:02:44.59 and salvation that talks about our future. 00:02:44.63\00:02:48.80 It might be good to see that link to the Old Testament. 00:02:48.83\00:02:51.97 If we turn to Exodus 24:3-8, we can see some of that language 00:02:52.00\00:02:57.04 that we've been talking about all along. 00:02:57.07\00:02:59.61 Exodus 24:3-8. 00:02:59.64\00:03:05.65 I guess, I can read it. Yeah. 00:03:05.68\00:03:07.05 "So Moses came and told the people all the words 00:03:07.08\00:03:09.55 of the Lord and all the judgments. 00:03:09.58\00:03:11.55 And all the people answered with one voice and said, 00:03:11.59\00:03:13.96 "All the words which the Lord has said we will do." 00:03:13.99\00:03:17.23 And Moses wrote all the words of the Lord. 00:03:17.26\00:03:22.03 And he rose early in the morning, 00:03:22.06\00:03:23.77 and built an altar at the foot of the mountains, 00:03:23.80\00:03:26.43 and twelve pillars according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 00:03:26.47\00:03:30.11 Then he sent young men of the children of Israel, 00:03:30.14\00:03:34.68 who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings 00:03:34.71\00:03:38.38 of oxen to the Lord. 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.28 And Moses took half the blood and put it in basins 00:03:40.32\00:03:44.02 and half the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 00:03:44.05\00:03:47.16 Then he took the Book of the Covenant 00:03:47.19\00:03:49.62 and read in the hearing of the people. 00:03:49.66\00:03:53.50 And they said, "All that the Lord has said we will do, 00:03:53.53\00:03:57.43 and be obedient." 00:03:57.47\00:03:59.70 And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, 00:03:59.73\00:04:03.30 and said, "This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord 00:04:03.34\00:04:07.48 has made with you according to all these words."" 00:04:07.51\00:04:11.28 Okay. Now this is exactly the same kind of idea 00:04:11.31\00:04:14.65 that we have in the Book of 1 Peter Chapter 1 verse 2 00:04:14.68\00:04:20.62 where it talks about the foreknowledge 00:04:20.66\00:04:22.39 of God the Father, the sanctification of the Spirit, 00:04:22.42\00:04:24.79 for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling with his blood. 00:04:24.83\00:04:29.23 Obedience and sprinkling. 00:04:29.26\00:04:30.63 We think those are mixed up, that those are backwards. 00:04:30.67\00:04:32.70 But if you go back to that story in Exodus 24, 00:04:32.73\00:04:36.10 first Moses goes, God sends him down 00:04:36.14\00:04:39.67 with the words and the people say, 00:04:39.71\00:04:41.21 "All the Lord has said, we will do." 00:04:41.24\00:04:43.28 They say they will obey. 00:04:43.31\00:04:44.88 And then they're sprinkled with the blood of the covenant. 00:04:44.91\00:04:47.28 They have agreed to be God's covenant people, all right. 00:04:47.32\00:04:51.69 Now, of course, we know that they failed to obey 00:04:51.72\00:04:54.82 and that actually broke the covenant 00:04:54.86\00:04:57.13 and then it had to be restored through God's grace to them. 00:04:57.16\00:05:02.73 So some people get the idea that, 00:05:02.76\00:05:05.03 "Oh, you got the wrong idea of obediency or something" 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.67 that this is entering into a covenant with God, 00:05:07.70\00:05:11.17 a new relationship with God, 00:05:11.21\00:05:12.97 the rebirth experience now empowers us. 00:05:13.01\00:05:15.71 Okay. So that brings us to this passage. 00:05:15.74\00:05:18.35 The first passage talked about God the Father 00:05:18.38\00:05:22.85 'cause he said, "Blessed be God the Father 00:05:22.88\00:05:26.05 of our Lord Jesus Christ!" Who has done all these things, 00:05:26.09\00:05:28.52 given us hope and everything. 00:05:28.56\00:05:30.09 And when we came to verse 6 00:05:30.13\00:05:34.10 and onwards he says, "In this you rejoice." 00:05:34.13\00:05:37.10 And he talks about in verse 8, "Though you have not seen him." 00:05:37.13\00:05:40.90 You have not seen Jesus. Okay. "You love him. 00:05:40.94\00:05:44.34 Though you do not now see him, you believe in him 00:05:44.37\00:05:46.71 and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible 00:05:46.74\00:05:48.64 and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome 00:05:48.68\00:05:51.08 of your faith, the salvation of your souls." 00:05:51.11\00:05:52.98 So he's talked about God the father and His role. 00:05:53.01\00:05:56.05 He's talked about Jesus and His role. 00:05:56.08\00:05:58.29 Then he comes to our passage here where he talks 00:05:58.32\00:06:00.39 about the Holy Spirit and the role of the Spirit. 00:06:00.42\00:06:02.86 So that's how this passage fits into and goes before. 00:06:02.89\00:06:08.46 And what is the sanctification of the Spirit all about? 00:06:08.50\00:06:13.00 Okay. There are different meanings. 00:06:13.03\00:06:16.04 We've already said some about this of the word sanctification. 00:06:16.07\00:06:19.67 Some people will say sanctification 00:06:19.71\00:06:21.98 is the work of a life time. 00:06:22.01\00:06:23.68 That's the purifying work of God's Spirit 00:06:23.71\00:06:25.78 that works in our lives, all through life. 00:06:25.81\00:06:28.28 There's another sentence for sanctification 00:06:28.32\00:06:29.82 is the act of a moment. 00:06:29.85\00:06:31.32 That's where you are set apart for God to be His people, 00:06:31.35\00:06:36.83 to belong to Him. 00:06:36.86\00:06:38.86 But in Peter, this idea of sanctification, 00:06:38.89\00:06:41.96 I would say is rather holistic. 00:06:42.00\00:06:44.10 It kind of puts it all together. It links it all together. 00:06:44.13\00:06:48.94 It cannot separate it out. 00:06:48.97\00:06:52.84 Salvation is not only the accepting of Christ 00:06:52.87\00:06:56.95 but also the living for Christ idea, 00:06:56.98\00:07:01.08 looking forward to His return. 00:07:01.12\00:07:03.79 So it's the new experience of the new birth, 00:07:03.82\00:07:07.42 it's also living for Him and it's particularly 00:07:07.46\00:07:10.83 looking forward to His return. 00:07:10.86\00:07:13.19 So it's especially focused on the end, the idea of salvation. 00:07:13.23\00:07:18.43 But this passage here that we just read 10 through 12 00:07:18.47\00:07:21.47 doesn't seem to talk about sanctification by the Spirit. 00:07:21.50\00:07:25.31 Why is that? Yeah. That's really interesting. 00:07:25.34\00:07:27.31 You know, it talks a lot about the Revelation, doesn't it? 00:07:27.34\00:07:31.08 That they received. And so you think in your mind, 00:07:31.11\00:07:33.95 "Well, wait a minute, 00:07:33.98\00:07:35.35 I thought this was all about sanctification. 00:07:35.38\00:07:36.99 Why does it emphasize so much about 00:07:37.02\00:07:39.52 the giving of the Revelation, the word of God? Why is that?" 00:07:39.55\00:07:42.66 Well, that's because of the role that the word of God 00:07:42.69\00:07:46.59 that the Spirit gives, the role that the word 00:07:46.63\00:07:49.10 of God has in sanctification. 00:07:49.13\00:07:52.87 So there's a passage that we can look at 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.54 that can help us to understand this a bit. 00:07:55.57\00:07:58.37 Ephesians 5:25 and 26. 00:07:58.41\00:08:04.15 Ephesians 5:25 and 26. 00:08:04.18\00:08:11.22 I teach students at the seminary how to read the Bible aloud 00:08:11.25\00:08:15.26 and how to talk about the scripture. 00:08:15.29\00:08:20.26 I tell them they should always list 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.23 the reference to the scripture three times. 00:08:22.26\00:08:25.03 Before they read it? Yep. 00:08:25.07\00:08:26.43 And when you're giving a sermon, 00:08:26.47\00:08:27.84 it's always good to read it three times. 00:08:27.87\00:08:29.47 Is there a purpose to that? What? Is there a purpose to 00:08:29.50\00:08:32.47 making a reference? There is. There definitely 00:08:32.51\00:08:33.88 is a purpose to that. 00:08:33.91\00:08:35.24 That's because you want people to bring their Bible to church 00:08:35.28\00:08:37.28 and you want them to open the Bible. Okay. 00:08:37.31\00:08:39.45 So that they not only hear it but they see the word of God. 00:08:39.48\00:08:43.82 See, and actually if you watch great evangelists like 00:08:43.85\00:08:47.72 "Mark Finley", he invariably 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.26 will reference it three times. Really? 00:08:50.29\00:08:52.03 Yep. He'll say quickly twice, then he'll tell a little story 00:08:52.06\00:08:54.83 or something and then he'll say it again and then he'll read it. 00:08:54.83\00:08:57.03 So here we go third time. Ephesians 5:25 and 26. 00:08:57.07\00:09:00.94 "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved 00:09:00.97\00:09:04.87 the church and gave Himself for her, 00:09:04.91\00:09:07.51 that He might sanctify and cleanse her 00:09:07.54\00:09:10.45 with the washing of water by the word." 00:09:10.48\00:09:13.75 Okay. Mine says, "The washing 00:09:13.78\00:09:15.65 of water with the word." Okay. 00:09:15.68\00:09:18.49 Now he's talking about Christian marriage 00:09:18.52\00:09:21.39 but he's also talking about Christian life in the church. 00:09:21.42\00:09:24.86 Because he said that Christ is the head of the church. 00:09:24.89\00:09:29.76 His body and He's the savior that's back in verse 23 00:09:29.80\00:09:34.24 and as the Christ submits to the church, 00:09:34.27\00:09:36.10 the wife is to submit to her husband. 00:09:36.14\00:09:37.77 So he talks about this relationship of husbands 00:09:37.81\00:09:41.18 and wives and he ties it all to the church. 00:09:41.21\00:09:44.25 And when he comes to this interesting passage 00:09:44.28\00:09:46.65 where he talks about husbands that they are 00:09:46.68\00:09:48.88 to love their wives, he says, "As Christ loved the church 00:09:48.92\00:09:52.82 and gave Himself for her that he might" 00:09:52.85\00:09:56.52 here is the term, "sanctify" her. All right. 00:09:56.56\00:10:00.20 Now how does He sanctify her? 00:10:00.23\00:10:02.66 Having cleansed her by the washing 00:10:02.70\00:10:05.67 of water with the word. 00:10:05.70\00:10:08.70 What does that sound like to you in Christian life? 00:10:08.74\00:10:13.04 Well, it sounds of a, I don't know, 00:10:13.07\00:10:16.01 maybe you can help in better understanding. 00:10:16.04\00:10:17.98 Well, washing with water. Where do we use water? 00:10:18.01\00:10:21.28 Maybe like taking the shower. 00:10:21.32\00:10:23.39 Yeah, but in the Christian church, 00:10:23.42\00:10:25.55 we use water for--. Baptism? 00:10:25.59\00:10:26.99 Baptism. Okay. 00:10:27.02\00:10:28.39 Yeah, we use baptism. And when we baptize somebody, 00:10:28.42\00:10:30.49 we say "I baptize you in the name 00:10:30.53\00:10:31.86 of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." 00:10:31.89\00:10:34.73 Those are the words that are spoken. 00:10:34.76\00:10:37.07 The words of sanctification. 00:10:37.10\00:10:38.50 The words of them now being 00:10:38.53\00:10:40.77 dipped in water to experience that. 00:10:40.80\00:10:44.11 We can say baptism is their faith taking physical form. 00:10:44.14\00:10:52.11 It's a public testimony we say of their faith. 00:10:52.15\00:10:56.25 And here it is, it's the washing of water with the word. 00:10:56.28\00:11:02.39 When you're baptized, that's the washing of water. 00:11:02.42\00:11:07.76 It's like your sins are washed away. 00:11:07.76\00:11:12.00 We did some evangelistic meetings 00:11:12.03\00:11:13.40 in a little church where I go, it's the Clare Michigan church, 00:11:13.44\00:11:17.91 and the pastor, we did a Revelation seminar. 00:11:17.94\00:11:23.21 And we had about 30 to 50 people coming regularly 00:11:23.24\00:11:26.05 to the meetings, both church members 00:11:26.08\00:11:28.45 and people from the community. 00:11:28.48\00:11:30.49 And we had a baptism where we baptized someone 00:11:30.52\00:11:34.32 and we have people who are coming to church. 00:11:34.36\00:11:35.76 It is really exciting, you know, to see us having so many people 00:11:35.79\00:11:38.49 in the church were involved in this ministry together. 00:11:38.53\00:11:42.80 And that lady was just so, you know, 00:11:42.83\00:11:45.30 she was just so happy on the day of her baptism, 00:11:45.33\00:11:48.84 washing of water with the word of God. 00:11:48.87\00:11:52.54 So we go back to 1 Peter. 00:11:52.57\00:11:54.41 This is what we see happening is that there's all kinds 00:11:54.44\00:11:58.45 of reference to this word, this prophesy, 00:11:58.48\00:12:04.75 these phrases that are going on, you see, 00:12:04.79\00:12:07.56 concerning the salvation the prophets who prophesied 00:12:07.59\00:12:10.49 about the grace but, was to be yours, 00:12:10.53\00:12:13.96 searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time 00:12:14.00\00:12:17.33 the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted 00:12:17.37\00:12:21.07 the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 00:12:21.10\00:12:24.27 So it's a beautiful expression of this revelation. 00:12:24.31\00:12:30.38 So the revelation becomes the place, 00:12:30.41\00:12:33.05 the word of God is that which takes and cleanses our life. 00:12:33.08\00:12:38.09 If you're not reading the word of God on a daily basis, 00:12:38.12\00:12:43.12 your life just won't be as clean. 00:12:43.16\00:12:45.66 You won't have the same kind of, should I say closeness, 00:12:45.69\00:12:51.40 the feel of closeness to God. 00:12:51.43\00:12:54.34 Most people find the beginning of the day 00:12:54.37\00:12:56.07 as a great time to read the Bible. 00:12:56.10\00:12:57.84 Others, they'll do it in the middle 00:12:57.87\00:12:59.64 of the day or the end of the day. 00:12:59.67\00:13:01.11 Doesn't matter when. But we have to make sure 00:13:01.14\00:13:02.68 that we have that experience with the word of God. 00:13:02.71\00:13:05.55 Because it continues not just in baptism 00:13:05.58\00:13:08.02 that it washes us, but it continues 00:13:08.05\00:13:10.22 to wash us through our life experience. 00:13:10.25\00:13:13.62 Every day I open my Bible. See and the light shines up, 00:13:13.66\00:13:18.09 you know, helps to clean out 00:13:18.13\00:13:19.76 the cobwebs that too often get in there. 00:13:19.79\00:13:23.53 So reading it, memorizing it, sharing it, 00:13:23.57\00:13:28.10 this is the experience of salvation. 00:13:28.14\00:13:31.01 Well, Dr. Shepherd, thank you for these very insights. 00:13:31.04\00:13:34.04 Why don't we go ahead and take a moment here? 00:13:34.08\00:13:36.51 Take a brief break and then we'll be right back 00:13:36.54\00:13:38.91 after these short messages. 00:13:38.95\00:13:41.38
