Hello and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.72\00:00:25.09 My name is Deyvy Rodriguez and with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd, 00:00:25.12\00:00:29.19 he's currently a Professor 00:00:29.22\00:00:30.59 of New Testament Interpretation at Andrews University. 00:00:30.63\00:00:33.80 We are studying the writings of the Apostle Peter. 00:00:33.83\00:00:37.43 Dr. Shepherd, and the last time we were studying here, 00:00:37.47\00:00:41.10 we talked about how God chose us. 00:00:41.14\00:00:43.30 We didn't choose Him, He chose us. 00:00:43.34\00:00:45.11 And also how the Trinity God, the Father, the Son 00:00:45.14\00:00:48.54 and the Holy Spirit are working together to save us. 00:00:48.58\00:00:52.01 How does Peter unpack this? 00:00:52.05\00:00:54.05 All right, so let's turn to the Book of 1 Peter. 00:00:54.08\00:00:57.42 In these studies, we're gonna read through 00:00:57.45\00:01:00.22 the entire Book of 1 Peter and the entire Book of 2 Peter. 00:01:00.26\00:01:04.09 I tell people in when I teach Sabbath school, 00:01:04.13\00:01:07.30 if we do nothing else, we should open the Bible. 00:01:07.30\00:01:09.50 And we should read the word of God. 00:01:09.53\00:01:10.90 Okay. I think that's important. 00:01:10.93\00:01:12.30 So now we're gonna start in 1 Peter 1:3 through 9. 00:01:12.33\00:01:16.91 I'm reading the English Standard Version. 00:01:16.94\00:01:19.14 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! 00:01:19.17\00:01:23.18 According to his great mercy, he has caused us 00:01:23.21\00:01:26.21 to be born again to a living hope 00:01:26.25\00:01:29.48 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 00:01:29.52\00:01:32.92 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, 00:01:32.95\00:01:37.13 and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 00:01:37.16\00:01:41.43 who by God's power are being guarded through faith 00:01:41.46\00:01:44.63 for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 00:01:44.67\00:01:49.14 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, 00:01:49.17\00:01:52.74 if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 00:01:52.77\00:01:57.48 so that the tested genuineness of your faith, 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.88 more precious than gold that perishes 00:02:00.92\00:02:03.59 though it is tested by fire, 00:02:03.62\00:02:05.79 may be found to result in praise and glory 00:02:05.82\00:02:09.39 and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 00:02:09.42\00:02:12.96 Though you have not seen him, you love him. 00:02:12.99\00:02:16.40 Though you do not now see him, 00:02:16.43\00:02:18.60 you believe in him and rejoice with joy 00:02:18.63\00:02:20.87 that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 00:02:20.90\00:02:23.87 obtaining the outcome of your faith, 00:02:23.91\00:02:26.24 the salvation of your souls." 00:02:26.27\00:02:30.41 So we look at the beginning of this, 00:02:30.45\00:02:32.25 the very first word that Peter uses in verse 3 00:02:32.28\00:02:36.72 is the word "Blessed." 00:02:36.75\00:02:39.35 "Blessed be the God and father of our lord Jesus Christ!" 00:02:39.39\00:02:43.63 Now I don't know, it's funny at least in our church, 00:02:43.66\00:02:48.10 this isn't words that we usually say. 00:02:48.13\00:02:50.93 Blessed be God, you know. 00:02:50.97\00:02:54.27 What exactly is going on here, 00:02:54.30\00:02:57.84 it's actually an Old Testament way of talking. 00:02:57.87\00:03:01.91 The Hebrew term is berakah, the blessing. 00:03:01.94\00:03:05.45 And it was to praise God, 00:03:05.48\00:03:08.55 to praise God for blessings that you had received. 00:03:08.58\00:03:13.49 You thank Him because He gave you life. 00:03:13.52\00:03:15.82 You thank Him because He gave you family. 00:03:15.86\00:03:18.49 He created the world, 00:03:18.53\00:03:19.89 you know, there's all these different things. 00:03:19.93\00:03:21.23 They are praising God for the things that He has done. 00:03:21.26\00:03:24.50 Now the question is 00:03:24.53\00:03:27.44 what is the blessing that we have received? 00:03:27.47\00:03:29.74 What did you notice? 00:03:29.77\00:03:32.04 Well, "According to his abundant mercy 00:03:32.07\00:03:33.61 has begotten us again to a living hope 00:03:33.64\00:03:37.01 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." 00:03:37.05\00:03:39.55 Yeah. 00:03:39.58\00:03:40.95 Okay, so that's a new birth experience, isn't that? 00:03:40.98\00:03:45.92 It sounds like a new birth. Yeah, to be-- 00:03:45.95\00:03:47.96 "Begotten us again." To be born again. 00:03:47.99\00:03:51.36 It almost sounds like the conversation 00:03:51.39\00:03:52.86 Jesus had with Nicodemus. 00:03:52.89\00:03:54.40 Nicodemus, in fact, let's turn over there. 00:03:54.46\00:03:56.00 Okay. To John 3:3 to 8. 00:03:56.03\00:03:58.07 I read the first one, you read this one. 00:03:58.10\00:04:00.90 John 3:3 to 8. 00:04:00.94\00:04:05.07 "Jesus answered him and said to him, 00:04:05.11\00:04:06.57 "Most assuredly I say to you unless one is born again, 00:04:06.61\00:04:10.38 he cannot see the kingdom of God." 00:04:10.41\00:04:13.18 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man can be born 00:04:13.21\00:04:15.78 when he's old. 00:04:15.82\00:04:17.25 Can he enter a second time 00:04:17.29\00:04:18.89 into his mother's womb and be born?" 00:04:18.92\00:04:21.59 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly I say to you, 00:04:21.62\00:04:24.99 unless one is born of water and the Spirit, 00:04:25.03\00:04:28.20 he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 00:04:28.23\00:04:30.37 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, 00:04:30.40\00:04:33.23 and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. 00:04:33.27\00:04:36.37 Do not marvel that I say to you, 00:04:36.40\00:04:39.07 'You must be born again.' 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.88 The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it. 00:04:40.91\00:04:44.88 But cannot tell where it comes from 00:04:44.91\00:04:46.92 and where it goes. 00:04:46.95\00:04:48.32 So everyone who is born, so as everyone 00:04:48.35\00:04:51.19 who is born of the Spirit." 00:04:51.22\00:04:52.82 All right, now we don't have time to unpack all of this. 00:04:52.85\00:04:55.46 But this is interesting conversation 00:04:55.49\00:04:57.16 that Jesus had with Nicodemus. 00:04:57.19\00:05:00.26 And the thing that is quite interesting here 00:05:00.30\00:05:02.86 is that there is a play on words several times. 00:05:02.90\00:05:07.47 One that a lot of people recognize 00:05:07.50\00:05:09.14 is down in verse 8. 00:05:09.17\00:05:10.54 He uses the word "Wind." 00:05:10.57\00:05:12.44 Well, the word wind in Greek is also the word Spirit. 00:05:12.47\00:05:17.61 So the wind blows where it wishes and you don't know, 00:05:17.65\00:05:21.05 so is the spirit, it's the same word you see. 00:05:21.08\00:05:24.12 Well, the interesting thing about being born again 00:05:24.15\00:05:27.56 in verse 3 is that the word "again" 00:05:27.59\00:05:31.09 also means from above. 00:05:31.13\00:05:35.13 Being born from above. 00:05:35.16\00:05:36.53 From above, that means God has given you 00:05:36.56\00:05:39.23 this birth experience, this new birth experience. 00:05:39.27\00:05:42.94 Now which way did Nicodemus take it? 00:05:42.97\00:05:46.84 Did he take it to mean from above or again? 00:05:46.88\00:05:50.48 Again. Yeah. 00:05:50.51\00:05:51.91 Because he asked a question, how can a man 00:05:51.95\00:05:54.22 return to his mother's womb and be born again?" 00:05:54.25\00:05:56.22 So he was thinking karno. 00:05:56.25\00:05:58.89 Yeah, no, this kind of interesting, 00:05:58.92\00:06:00.69 why would he think that way? 00:06:00.72\00:06:04.49 Why would he, you know, say, a man can't be born again, 00:06:04.53\00:06:09.80 he can't go back into his mother's womb, 00:06:09.83\00:06:11.57 and you know, be born a second time, can he? 00:06:11.60\00:06:15.34 And it's interesting because Nicodemus himself 00:06:15.37\00:06:17.24 was a professor at religion, you know. 00:06:17.27\00:06:22.21 Why he would ask something like that, 00:06:22.24\00:06:23.61 you would think he knows what Jesus is talking about. 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.55 He does know what Jesus is talking about. 00:06:26.58\00:06:29.45 What he didn't like was 00:06:29.48\00:06:30.89 that Jesus was saying that he needed it. 00:06:30.92\00:06:34.16 Because he was a professor, you know-- 00:06:34.19\00:06:37.83 He was talking to his heart. 00:06:37.86\00:06:39.29 Yeah. Let me tell you about it. 00:06:39.33\00:06:40.70 Yeah, it was a heart question, that's right. 00:06:40.73\00:06:42.33 And he was applying it to his heart. 00:06:42.36\00:06:44.07 So it's kind of ironic in a sense 00:06:44.10\00:06:45.70 when we say or that you must be born again, 00:06:45.73\00:06:48.60 we are using Nicodemus' words instead of Jesus' words 00:06:48.64\00:06:52.01 that you must be born form above. 00:06:52.04\00:06:54.04 But still it's that birth experience, 00:06:54.08\00:06:56.34 spiritual birth experience that he's talking about. 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.85 He says of being born of water, 00:06:58.88\00:07:00.52 that's baptism and the Spirit, 00:07:00.55\00:07:02.15 that's the Holy Spirit working in your life, 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.22 sanctifying you, cleansing you 00:07:04.25\00:07:05.79 of that all the way of life. 00:07:05.82\00:07:07.76 So if we go back to Peter now. Okay. 00:07:07.79\00:07:10.46 And he says, "Blessed be the God 00:07:10.49\00:07:12.69 and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.36 According to his great mercy, 00:07:14.40\00:07:16.10 he has caused us to be born again." 00:07:16.13\00:07:19.27 He's caused us to be born again. 00:07:19.30\00:07:20.90 Now here's the question. 00:07:20.94\00:07:22.30 When did that rebirth experience 00:07:22.34\00:07:24.64 happened for the people that Peter is writing to? 00:07:24.67\00:07:28.18 That's a good question. 00:07:28.21\00:07:29.58 Maybe you can answer that question. 00:07:29.61\00:07:32.28 Well, if I say, if I put it in to their past, 00:07:32.31\00:07:37.39 their present, or their future, 00:07:37.42\00:07:38.79 what would it be? Their past. 00:07:38.82\00:07:42.02 Their past, because he's right, he gave and he says, 00:07:42.06\00:07:44.89 you know, he gave us, he has caused us 00:07:44.93\00:07:48.06 to be born again to a living hope. 00:07:48.10\00:07:50.90 So that is an experience of their past, okay. 00:07:50.93\00:07:55.17 Now so, just to keep that in mind, 00:07:55.20\00:07:57.54 now he's talked about something 00:07:57.57\00:07:59.44 that has happened in their past. 00:07:59.47\00:08:03.28 Now if we keep looking in the verse, 00:08:03.31\00:08:05.65 he keeps going and he says, "Born unto a living hope 00:08:05.68\00:08:11.45 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." 00:08:11.49\00:08:14.59 Just like Jesus was raised from the dead. 00:08:14.62\00:08:19.69 He had new life come into him. 00:08:19.73\00:08:21.80 God raised him from the dead. 00:08:21.83\00:08:24.07 So God by the resurrection of Jesus, 00:08:24.10\00:08:26.97 notice here, through the resurrection 00:08:27.00\00:08:28.37 of Jesus Christ from the dead. 00:08:28.40\00:08:29.77 Notice, he says that phrase 00:08:29.80\00:08:31.17 through the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:31.21\00:08:33.17 That that's how you and I got that new birth experience too. 00:08:33.21\00:08:37.61 That new life came into our lives 00:08:37.65\00:08:41.15 through the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:41.18\00:08:42.85 So you start thinking about this and you think about baptism 00:08:42.88\00:08:45.62 and how baptism is a sign, a symbol of the death, 00:08:45.65\00:08:50.76 the burial and the resurrection of Jesus. 00:08:50.79\00:08:53.16 And so when you're born again, when you're baptized, 00:08:53.19\00:08:56.56 then you enter into that salvation experience. 00:08:56.60\00:08:59.00 That's the kind of thing that Peter is talking about here. 00:08:59.03\00:09:02.67 But he uses the word "Hope." 00:09:02.70\00:09:07.68 When you think of the word hope, 00:09:07.71\00:09:09.08 what do you think of? 00:09:09.11\00:09:10.71 I think of I have-- I can take courage 00:09:10.75\00:09:14.05 that there is a solution to may be a problem that I have. 00:09:14.08\00:09:18.29 That it is not the end. 00:09:18.32\00:09:20.62 That eventually with time, God will provide 00:09:20.66\00:09:24.26 whatever I may need. 00:09:24.29\00:09:25.66 So I have hope that this is not the end of my problem, you know. 00:09:25.69\00:09:30.97 There is a hope. The biblical concept of hope. 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.00 Looking forward to something. 00:09:33.03\00:09:34.40 Is a very forward looking kind of a concept. Yeah. 00:09:34.44\00:09:37.11 It looks forward to something better that's coming. 00:09:37.14\00:09:40.98 And you can almost say, it implies that 00:09:41.01\00:09:43.81 things aren't quite as good as you want them now. 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.85 You have hope that things are going to go forward 00:09:46.88\00:09:49.68 and get better and you know go up from here. 00:09:49.72\00:09:53.15 So notice, there is a past been born again 00:09:53.19\00:09:57.49 and there is a hope that's in the future, all right. 00:09:57.53\00:10:00.70 So there is a past and there is a future 00:10:00.73\00:10:02.40 that he talks about. 00:10:02.43\00:10:03.80 He keeps on going and he says that 00:10:03.83\00:10:06.47 you have this hope and then verse 4 says, 00:10:06.50\00:10:09.34 "To an inheritance that is imperishable, 00:10:09.37\00:10:12.37 undefiled and unfading." 00:10:12.41\00:10:13.78 He used these three words, 00:10:13.81\00:10:15.31 in Greek, we call them alpha privatives. 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.21 They begin with an alpha and so that makes him negative, 00:10:17.25\00:10:21.98 it's not this, it's not this, it's not this. 00:10:22.02\00:10:24.99 And he says it's not perishable, 00:10:25.02\00:10:28.89 it's not defiled and it's not fading away. 00:10:28.92\00:10:34.10 It's a beautiful kind of picture 00:10:34.10\00:10:36.80 of--one scholar speaks of it in this way; 00:10:36.83\00:10:39.70 they say that it's a freedom from death, okay. 00:10:39.73\00:10:45.04 Because it's not gonna perish, the perishable is that 00:10:45.07\00:10:47.81 which decays and dies. 00:10:47.84\00:10:49.81 Freedom from death, freedom from impurity is undefiled. 00:10:49.84\00:10:56.45 And freedom from it's unfading. 00:10:56.48\00:11:02.16 You know, you start to look in-- 00:11:02.19\00:11:03.79 well, most of us don't see it in the mirror every day 00:11:03.83\00:11:05.76 but if you look at the picture of yourself-- 00:11:05.79\00:11:09.83 oh, you're still very young. 00:11:09.86\00:11:12.00 But if you look at the picture of yourself 00:11:12.03\00:11:13.44 when you're a young person 00:11:13.47\00:11:14.84 and then you look at this later picture, 00:11:14.87\00:11:17.67 you can really see the difference. 00:11:17.71\00:11:19.07 I remember, a student of mine 00:11:19.11\00:11:20.71 seeing a picture of my wedding, 00:11:20.74\00:11:22.78 you know, my wedding day. 00:11:22.81\00:11:24.51 They looked at that picture and they laughed. 00:11:24.55\00:11:29.45 Shepherd, you don't look like you used too, you know. 00:11:29.48\00:11:32.15 This is untouched by the ravages of time, this inheritance. 00:11:32.19\00:11:38.86 So there's three wonderful things 00:11:38.89\00:11:40.40 about this inheritance, you see. 00:11:40.43\00:11:42.46 It is, it will not decay, it's not gonna die, 00:11:42.50\00:11:46.57 it is not touched by impurity, 00:11:46.60\00:11:49.40 and it's untouched by the ravages of time. 00:11:49.44\00:11:52.94 Well, certainly is something that I can look forward to, 00:11:52.97\00:11:55.21 there is the hope in my life to say, 00:11:55.24\00:11:56.61 well, my life has a purpose. 00:11:56.64\00:11:59.21 God has a plan for me. 00:11:59.25\00:12:00.68 And I look forward to this incorruptible treasure 00:12:00.72\00:12:04.45 that never fades away, as you've mentioned. 00:12:04.49\00:12:05.99 Right. 00:12:06.02\00:12:07.39 It's an inheritance, you see, 00:12:07.42\00:12:08.89 so you've made a covenant with the God. 00:12:08.92\00:12:10.66 We've already been talking about that, 00:12:10.69\00:12:12.06 you are now His child. 00:12:12.09\00:12:14.00 You are inheriting, you are receiving 00:12:14.00\00:12:16.43 the blessings from God. 00:12:16.46\00:12:18.37 Is there anything in this life 00:12:18.40\00:12:20.10 that can destroy or touch that inheritance? 00:12:20.14\00:12:23.51 And the answer is no, no. 00:12:23.54\00:12:27.21 That's a wonderful security, you see, that these people need. 00:12:27.24\00:12:30.71 And the third thing he says, 00:12:30.75\00:12:32.65 it is kept for them in heaven for you. 00:12:32.68\00:12:36.65 That's at the end of verse 4. 00:12:36.69\00:12:38.32 And then in verse 5, he says, 00:12:38.35\00:12:40.69 "Who by God power are being guarded 00:12:40.72\00:12:44.49 through faith for a salvation 00:12:44.53\00:12:47.96 ready to be revealed at the last time." 00:12:48.00\00:12:51.17 So he's combined these great words about the future, 00:12:51.20\00:12:56.67 you see, he has an inheritance, 00:12:56.71\00:13:02.64 he has a-also the salvation 00:13:02.68\00:13:08.22 that is kept for them 00:13:08.25\00:13:10.72 into the future, and a living hope. 00:13:10.75\00:13:13.96 So a living hope, and salvation, and inheritance. 00:13:13.99\00:13:19.16 These three together, these three outcomes 00:13:19.19\00:13:22.50 are their's and they're all secured. 00:13:22.53\00:13:26.23 The question is, are they present now or they future? 00:13:26.27\00:13:31.34 That's a very good question and also, 00:13:31.37\00:13:33.78 perhaps you can help us understand, 00:13:33.81\00:13:35.64 you know, because we've studied 00:13:35.68\00:13:37.31 that these people are suffering and you help us to understand 00:13:37.35\00:13:42.38 I hope that how can these, 00:13:42.42\00:13:43.79 how can a person rejoice when they are suffering? 00:13:43.82\00:13:47.89 Yeah. 00:13:47.92\00:13:49.29 And perhaps you can answer those questions 00:13:49.32\00:13:51.53 after a brief break. 00:13:51.56\00:13:52.93 This is a very interesting study on the book. Yeah. 00:13:52.96\00:13:54.73 Now we're getting more involved 00:13:54.73\00:13:56.10 into the writings and the messages 00:13:56.13\00:13:57.80 that Peter has for these people. 00:13:57.83\00:13:59.67 Stay tuned, we'll be right back after these messages. 00:13:59.70\00:14:02.64
