Welcome back again, friends. This is "The Books of the Book." 00:00:01.33\00:00:04.23 And with us is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:04.27\00:00:06.23 He joins us from Andrews University. 00:00:06.27\00:00:08.54 Dr. Shepherd, you were saying 00:00:08.57\00:00:09.94 that these people were different. 00:00:09.97\00:00:12.41 They did not fit into these groups of people. 00:00:12.44\00:00:16.54 Can you share more about that? Right. 00:00:16.58\00:00:17.95 Yeah, the Christian faith had changed them. 00:00:17.98\00:00:21.18 In fact, we want to look at this. 00:00:21.22\00:00:22.58 Let's open our Bibles to 1 Peter 1 00:00:22.62\00:00:24.62 and we want to read verses 1 and 2 of 1 Peter 1. 00:00:24.65\00:00:29.49 Okay, it says, "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, 00:00:29.52\00:00:32.03 to the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, 00:00:32.06\00:00:35.43 Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 00:00:35.46\00:00:38.77 elect according to the foreknowledge 00:00:38.80\00:00:40.80 of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, 00:00:40.84\00:00:44.74 for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:00:44.77\00:00:49.18 Grace to you and peace be multiplied." 00:00:49.21\00:00:52.01 All right. This is the very opening of the book. 00:00:52.05\00:00:54.68 In New Testament epistles it's always important to look 00:00:54.72\00:00:57.29 at the opening of the book. 00:00:57.32\00:00:59.29 Because in the opening of the book 00:00:59.32\00:01:00.76 is where the concepts and the themes 00:01:00.79\00:01:04.33 of the book are presented, all right. 00:01:04.36\00:01:06.63 And Peter begins this right from the very get go. 00:01:06.66\00:01:10.83 He says who he is, is very typical 00:01:10.87\00:01:13.34 of letter writing in that day. 00:01:13.37\00:01:15.20 He says who its recipients are 00:01:15.24\00:01:17.27 and that's also very typical of letter writing of that day. 00:01:17.31\00:01:20.24 And then he says-- he describes them. 00:01:20.28\00:01:23.88 You use the term-- my Bible I'm using the ESV, 00:01:23.91\00:01:26.78 the English Standard Version. 00:01:26.82\00:01:28.18 It says, "elect exiles." What does yours call? 00:01:28.22\00:01:30.72 Pilgrims. Pilgrims. 00:01:30.75\00:01:32.12 Yeah. Yeah-- 00:01:32.15\00:01:33.72 A foreigner Is that-- would that be a-- 00:01:33.76\00:01:35.39 Foreigners, yes. 00:01:35.42\00:01:36.79 But there's two terms actually. 00:01:36.83\00:01:38.19 Does it just use the word pilgrims? 00:01:38.23\00:01:39.59 "To the pilgrims of the dispersion." 00:01:39.63\00:01:41.26 Uh, okay. 00:01:41.30\00:01:42.66 Yeah there's actually two terms 00:01:42.70\00:01:44.70 that are put together here in Greek. 00:01:44.73\00:01:47.34 And one is this concept of being elect or chosen. 00:01:47.37\00:01:52.84 And the other is the idea of being a stranger 00:01:52.87\00:01:55.91 or a pilgrim or an exile or something like that. 00:01:55.94\00:02:00.42 So we think first of the idea of being chosen or elect. 00:02:00.45\00:02:06.49 Many countries have elections. 00:02:06.52\00:02:08.72 And what-- so what happens 00:02:08.76\00:02:10.13 when you're having an election is what you do. 00:02:10.16\00:02:12.93 You choose your leader, right? You vote, okay. 00:02:12.96\00:02:16.63 Well, this election is not like that. 00:02:16.67\00:02:19.93 This is God choosing you. So God gets to vote. 00:02:19.97\00:02:23.94 God gets to vote. He makes the choice. 00:02:23.97\00:02:26.21 Now some people get the idea under Biblical election 00:02:26.24\00:02:30.08 that some people are predestined to be saved 00:02:30.11\00:02:32.88 and others are predestined to be lost. 00:02:32.91\00:02:35.98 But of course, 2 Peter written by our same apostle will say 00:02:36.02\00:02:40.62 that God is not willing that anyone should perish 00:02:40.66\00:02:42.79 but they all should come to repentance. 00:02:42.82\00:02:44.46 So the chosen is--we'll explain this a bit more as we go along, 00:02:44.49\00:02:49.66 its linkage to the will of God and how people respond. 00:02:49.70\00:02:54.30 But people have free choice in this book. 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.77 We're gonna see that over and over 00:02:56.81\00:02:58.64 that people have the ability to change, to choose. 00:02:58.67\00:03:02.11 So this being chosen is a concept that is tied 00:03:02.14\00:03:07.75 into the Old Testament ideas about God choosing Israel. 00:03:07.78\00:03:13.36 You know, He chooses Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. 00:03:13.39\00:03:17.39 And He brings the people out of Egypt 00:03:17.43\00:03:20.90 and at Sinai He sets up a covenant with them. 00:03:20.93\00:03:23.83 They become His people. 00:03:23.87\00:03:26.60 Peter is gonna tie into all those ideas and link it in 00:03:26.63\00:03:31.01 to this Christian community, this household of faith 00:03:31.04\00:03:34.58 as we might say that's so important. 00:03:34.61\00:03:36.31 And doesn't Jesus say, "you did not choose me, 00:03:36.34\00:03:38.85 I choose you?" Yes. Okay. 00:03:38.88\00:03:40.45 Right, so again that linkage into the teachings of Jesus. 00:03:40.48\00:03:45.15 Now why does Peter call them elect? 00:03:45.19\00:03:48.46 Yeah, so they are elect. 00:03:48.49\00:03:50.79 They are the special group 00:03:50.83\00:03:52.36 because they have entered the covenant with God. 00:03:52.39\00:03:56.20 They have become His children. 00:03:56.23\00:03:58.87 And He is--notice it says He is their father, all right? 00:03:58.90\00:04:02.44 So that is a very positive kind of terminology, 00:04:02.47\00:04:08.24 a positive way of talking about somebody. 00:04:08.28\00:04:11.28 If you're chosen, you know, if somebody choose you 00:04:11.31\00:04:14.22 to get to go to the White House or something-- 00:04:14.25\00:04:19.22 I've been specially chosen to do this, you know? 00:04:19.25\00:04:21.86 And so you would be-- that would be 00:04:21.89\00:04:24.19 a very positive honor to you. 00:04:24.23\00:04:27.23 But connected with this is this word stranger. 00:04:27.30\00:04:32.63 And I know what it's like to be a stranger and a foreigner. 00:04:32.67\00:04:35.94 My wife and I were missionaries in Malawi, Africa, 00:04:35.97\00:04:38.84 but we're also missionaries in Brazil in South America. 00:04:38.87\00:04:42.34 And when you're foreigner in the land 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.68 where they don't talk your mother tongue, 00:04:44.71\00:04:47.55 it's really challenging, you know, just to find out 00:04:47.58\00:04:51.72 where the food can be, where's the bank, 00:04:51.75\00:04:54.06 you know, where's the bathroom. 00:04:54.09\00:04:55.59 I mean, you know, there's all kinds of things 00:04:55.62\00:04:57.29 where it can be very challenging in order to live. 00:04:57.33\00:05:01.63 So that's a very negative kind of a term. 00:05:01.66\00:05:06.20 That's a term that puts you down. 00:05:06.23\00:05:08.84 So you have an oxymoron. 00:05:08.87\00:05:11.11 You have a very positive term 00:05:11.14\00:05:13.31 connected with the very negative term. 00:05:13.34\00:05:15.11 And oxymoron is when two opposites are combined together. 00:05:15.14\00:05:18.01 Like if we said an innocent guilt 00:05:18.05\00:05:20.98 or Shakespeare's words "parting is such sweet sorrow." 00:05:21.02\00:05:26.02 How can sorrow be sweet? That's right. 00:05:26.05\00:05:27.42 Yeah, so how can somebody who's elect be a stranger? 00:05:27.46\00:05:33.43 So that we'll unpack as we go through looking at this book. 00:05:33.46\00:05:39.20 The concept of stranger is linked 00:05:39.23\00:05:41.64 with the ethical language of the Book of Peter. 00:05:41.67\00:05:44.54 Some people think that when he says strangers 00:05:44.57\00:05:46.31 he just means that they were foreigners. 00:05:46.34\00:05:49.34 They didn't come from Cappadocia or Asia or something. 00:05:49.38\00:05:52.31 They were imports from some place else. 00:05:52.35\00:05:55.32 But the problem with that is whenever you read 00:05:55.35\00:05:59.75 the book of 1 Peter when he talks about this term, 00:05:59.79\00:06:03.83 and he uses it several times, 00:06:03.86\00:06:05.63 he always links it up with ethical language 00:06:05.66\00:06:08.80 over theological language. 00:06:08.83\00:06:10.80 He imbues it with-- he seems to imbue it 00:06:10.83\00:06:13.37 with theological and ethical ideas. 00:06:13.40\00:06:16.34 Therefore, he's probably talking metaphorically 00:06:16.37\00:06:20.24 that we're strangers. 00:06:20.28\00:06:22.48 We talk about this in the church today. 00:06:22.51\00:06:24.18 We'll say, "I'm a pilgrim 00:06:24.21\00:06:26.05 or I'm a stranger in this world." 00:06:26.08\00:06:28.22 Our citizenship is in heaven. 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.22 Our citizenship is in heaven, not in this earth. 00:06:30.25\00:06:33.12 And you know, it's just applying the message, 00:06:33.15\00:06:35.82 just briefly thinking for a moment 00:06:35.86\00:06:37.23 to think of the application of this method--message. 00:06:37.26\00:06:41.20 You think and you say, 00:06:41.23\00:06:42.60 "okay, what makes me different from the world around me? 00:06:42.63\00:06:46.94 What makes me a stranger in this world? 00:06:46.97\00:06:50.27 And makes me, you know, like Jesus 00:06:50.31\00:06:54.21 different from the world around me?" 00:06:54.24\00:06:56.38 Now of course, we, in many places, 00:06:56.41\00:06:58.15 live in a Christian culture so we may not 00:06:58.18\00:07:00.72 standout quite so much. 00:07:00.75\00:07:02.12 But I dare say that Seventh-day Adventist 00:07:02.15\00:07:04.55 have a number of things that make them standout. 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.25 One is the Sabbath, of course, that makes us really different. 00:07:06.29\00:07:11.03 And we can relate pretty well to being strangers to this idea. 00:07:11.06\00:07:14.20 But we better press on. 00:07:14.20\00:07:15.93 You know, I notice here that there are three verse 00:07:15.96\00:07:18.10 linked up with God, the Spirit, and Jesus 00:07:18.13\00:07:20.17 and that those three words are for knowledge, 00:07:20.20\00:07:23.27 sanctification, the sprinkling of the blood. 00:07:23.30\00:07:27.41 Sounds just kind of difficult. 00:07:27.44\00:07:29.14 Can you explain what does this mean? Yeah. 00:07:29.18\00:07:31.45 First of all we notice that there is God, the Father 00:07:31.48\00:07:34.32 with the Spirit and Jesus Christ. 00:07:34.35\00:07:36.58 That's the-- Trini... 00:07:36.62\00:07:38.25 The Trinity, yeah. 00:07:38.29\00:07:39.65 Here's one of those places in the New Testament 00:07:39.69\00:07:41.86 where this concept, I mean, the word Trinity is never used. 00:07:41.89\00:07:45.49 But you have these three members of the Godhead 00:07:45.53\00:07:47.66 working together for our salvation 00:07:47.73\00:07:49.66 and then each have a part to play. 00:07:49.70\00:07:52.70 Somebody says, "ah, I'm not so sure that 00:07:52.73\00:07:55.84 that's really Trinitarian language. 00:07:55.87\00:07:58.44 Is there any other evidence for that?" 00:07:58.47\00:08:00.44 Well, as we will continue to study 00:08:00.48\00:08:02.61 and once we read further into this first chapter, 00:08:02.64\00:08:05.65 the first part talks about God, the Father. 00:08:05.68\00:08:08.08 The second part talks about Jesus Christ. 00:08:08.12\00:08:10.45 And the third part talks about the Holy Spirit. 00:08:10.49\00:08:12.92 So they are mentioned in this second verse of the book 00:08:12.95\00:08:16.22 and then their roles are expounded and explained 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.63 and unwrapped in the following verses. 00:08:19.66\00:08:22.00 So yes, it is very much Trinitarian language. 00:08:22.03\00:08:24.97 It is very much kind of a planned out expression 00:08:25.00\00:08:29.10 that he is putting forth here. 00:08:29.14\00:08:30.64 Now what he does is he ties each of these individuals 00:08:30.67\00:08:34.94 of the Godhead to a different idea. 00:08:34.98\00:08:36.78 He talks about the foreknowledge of God, the Father. 00:08:36.81\00:08:40.02 He talks about sanctification of the spirit and then he says 00:08:40.05\00:08:43.28 for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling with His blood. 00:08:43.32\00:08:47.49 Let's start with foreknowledge, okay. 00:08:47.52\00:08:50.56 This is said to be in accordance with the foreknowledge of God. 00:08:50.59\00:08:54.36 Now remember he's talking about election. 00:08:54.40\00:08:57.20 He's talking about us being God's chosen people. 00:08:57.23\00:09:00.07 How did that take place? 00:09:00.10\00:09:02.60 The three members of the Godhead were each involved 00:09:02.64\00:09:05.54 in this process of these people becoming Christians, 00:09:05.57\00:09:08.28 of them becoming linked to Him in a special way, 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.05 in a special covenant with Him, okay? 00:09:11.08\00:09:13.55 So the first is according to the foreknowledge of God. 00:09:13.58\00:09:16.02 God knows everything. 00:09:16.05\00:09:19.45 Before it happens He knows what's going to take place. 00:09:19.49\00:09:23.16 His foreknowledge, He foresees everything that will take-- 00:09:23.19\00:09:26.70 now that doesn't mean that He takes and rules, 00:09:26.73\00:09:30.53 you know, overrules our will. 00:09:30.57\00:09:32.53 He has given us the freedom of choice, 00:09:32.57\00:09:34.94 but He knows everything that will take place. 00:09:34.97\00:09:37.57 So according to His foreknowledge, 00:09:37.61\00:09:40.44 seen in His great eternity 00:09:40.48\00:09:42.24 all that will take place, He elects us. 00:09:42.28\00:09:46.11 He chooses us to be His children. 00:09:46.15\00:09:49.28 Next comes the phraseology, sanctification of the spirit. 00:09:49.32\00:09:53.59 What kind of words do you think of 00:09:53.62\00:09:55.42 when you think of the word sanctification? 00:09:55.46\00:09:58.19 Holiness. Holiness, certainly. 00:09:58.23\00:10:00.43 Being separate. Being separate, yeah. 00:10:00.46\00:10:02.66 Separated for God's use, all right. 00:10:02.70\00:10:05.13 This is what they did. 00:10:05.17\00:10:07.14 The concept of holiness is a big idea in the Bible. 00:10:07.17\00:10:11.37 And one of the easiest ways to think of it 00:10:11.41\00:10:13.54 is anything that is connected with God is holy. 00:10:13.58\00:10:19.08 So anything that is connected to God is holy. 00:10:19.11\00:10:22.32 You think when He meets Moses, 00:10:22.35\00:10:24.42 He says to him at the burning bush, 00:10:24.45\00:10:26.02 He says, "take off your shoes, because"-- 00:10:26.05\00:10:29.36 The ground... The ground... 00:10:29.39\00:10:30.79 Is holy. Is holy. 00:10:30.83\00:10:32.16 What made the ground holy? 00:10:32.19\00:10:33.56 God's presence. God's presence. 00:10:33.60\00:10:34.93 He is there in the bush and that makes the ground holy. 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.30 He's in the temple, that makes the temple holy. 00:10:37.33\00:10:39.93 Now the Spirit comes into our life 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.57 and that's what sanctifies us, 00:10:42.60\00:10:43.97 that separates us for God, for God's use. 00:10:44.01\00:10:47.14 Now the idea of holiness we will unpack 00:10:47.18\00:10:49.58 as we go through this book. 00:10:49.61\00:10:51.25 It is also connected with the idea of purity, 00:10:51.28\00:10:54.55 being like God, being holy, being separate, 00:10:54.58\00:10:57.55 not following the world's ways. 00:10:57.59\00:10:59.79 Holiness is the separateness from the world's ways. 00:10:59.82\00:11:03.69 Now you can think of sanctification 00:11:03.73\00:11:06.29 as something that happens just like that. 00:11:06.33\00:11:08.96 You're set apart to be used by God. 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.03 But you can also think of it as that purifying word 00:11:11.07\00:11:14.20 that is--Ellen White says "is the work of a lifetime." 00:11:14.24\00:11:17.94 Okay, so that sanctifying, holifying work, 00:11:17.97\00:11:21.58 that work of putting you apart, 00:11:21.61\00:11:23.41 that's the work of the Sprit in the life. 00:11:23.45\00:11:25.35 Sanctification by the Spirit of God. 00:11:25.38\00:11:28.85 Then we come to the last phrase and it kind of confuses people, 00:11:28.88\00:11:31.39 'cause it says, "for obedience 00:11:31.42\00:11:32.89 and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus." 00:11:32.92\00:11:34.29 Let me ask you a question. 00:11:34.32\00:11:35.69 Which comes first, justification or sanctification? 00:11:35.72\00:11:39.93 Well, justification. You would say justification. 00:11:39.96\00:11:42.96 I would say so. That seems to be right answer. 00:11:43.00\00:11:45.90 But Peter seems to put it backwards. 00:11:45.93\00:11:48.04 He says obedience, you know, sanctification kind of things 00:11:48.07\00:11:51.17 and then sprinkling of the blood of Jesus. 00:11:51.21\00:11:53.41 How can that be? 00:11:53.44\00:11:55.24 Well, actually what he's referring to 00:11:55.28\00:11:57.75 is a passage of scripture. 00:11:57.78\00:11:59.15 We don't have time to read it right now. 00:11:59.18\00:12:00.95 But a passage of scripture in Exodus 24:3-8, 00:12:00.98\00:12:05.55 where Moses comes down from the mountain of Sinai 00:12:05.59\00:12:09.62 and he says to the-- he's going to-- 00:12:09.66\00:12:12.86 he says God wants to make a covenant with you. 00:12:12.89\00:12:15.56 He has these rules for you to obey. 00:12:15.60\00:12:17.20 And then the people say, "all that the Lord has said, 00:12:17.23\00:12:20.60 we will do." We will obey the Lord." 00:12:20.64\00:12:22.74 Then it says, Moses takes and sprinkles them 00:12:22.77\00:12:25.71 with the blood of the covenant, all right. 00:12:25.74\00:12:28.21 So this whole thing here 00:12:28.24\00:12:30.41 and particularly this last part obedience and sprinkling 00:12:30.45\00:12:32.88 is all of this covenant making with God. 00:12:32.91\00:12:35.78 God choosing them as His people 00:12:35.82\00:12:37.45 and then becoming God's people through God's foreknowledge, 00:12:37.49\00:12:41.59 though the sanctifying work of the Spirit, 00:12:41.62\00:12:43.79 through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ 00:12:43.83\00:12:46.53 and their commitment to follow Him. 00:12:46.56\00:12:48.80 That's what it means to be chosen and elect. 00:12:48.83\00:12:52.17 Well, I take motivation, I take courage 00:12:52.20\00:12:55.17 that God has chosen me. Yes. 00:12:55.20\00:12:57.17 He's chosen you and He's chosen each of our viewers as well. 00:12:57.21\00:13:00.71 Dr. Shepherd, to wrap up our--this study, 00:13:00.74\00:13:03.68 what is it that that you'd like to tell 00:13:03.71\00:13:05.28 our listening audience or viewers? 00:13:05.31\00:13:08.58 We've seen in these last-- in this verse, 00:13:08.62\00:13:11.02 a beautiful, beautiful expression 00:13:11.05\00:13:13.46 of how God is choosing your life 00:13:13.49\00:13:16.19 if you will respond to Him. 00:13:16.22\00:13:17.89 The Trinity is working together to save you, to save me. 00:13:17.93\00:13:22.26 And if we will respond we can have this wonderful salvation. 00:13:22.30\00:13:25.83 Thank you, Dr. Shepherd. 00:13:25.87\00:13:27.24 And thank you to listening friends. 00:13:27.27\00:13:28.67 God bless you, till next time. 00:13:28.70\00:13:30.97
