Hello, friends and welcome to "Books of the Book." 00:00:22.48\00:00:25.45 We are excited that you can join us 00:00:25.49\00:00:26.92 in being part of this fascinating Bible study. 00:00:26.96\00:00:29.09 I'm Deyvy Rodriguez and I'd like to invite you 00:00:29.12\00:00:31.19 to take your Bibles, grab a pen or pencil, 00:00:31.23\00:00:33.90 something to write on and let's be blessed 00:00:33.93\00:00:35.73 as we study the scriptures together. 00:00:35.76\00:00:37.77 With me is Dr. Tom Shepherd. 00:00:37.80\00:00:39.60 He's the professor of New Testament 00:00:39.63\00:00:41.34 interpretation at Andrews University. 00:00:41.37\00:00:43.24 Welcome. Thank you. 00:00:43.27\00:00:44.64 Dr. Shepherd, you're also a director of the PhD program 00:00:44.67\00:00:48.11 in religion at Andrews University, is that right? 00:00:48.14\00:00:50.35 That's correct. The PhD in religion and the ThD, 00:00:50.38\00:00:53.75 Doctor of Theology programs. 00:00:53.78\00:00:55.98 I was asked to guide these people. 00:00:56.02\00:00:58.35 We have about 100 people doing 00:00:58.39\00:00:59.79 the PhD in those two programs. 00:00:59.82\00:01:01.99 Okay, so you seem to be very busy then. 00:01:02.02\00:01:05.09 Yeah, pretty busy. I keep active. 00:01:05.13\00:01:07.60 When you're not busy or what you do on your time off 00:01:07.66\00:01:10.43 when you're not teaching? 00:01:10.47\00:01:11.80 Well, my wife will probably tell you 00:01:11.83\00:01:13.74 there's not much of that. Okay, lot of work. 00:01:13.77\00:01:16.87 A lot of work, but I'm a cellist. 00:01:16.91\00:01:19.87 I play the cello and so that takes up some of my spare time. 00:01:19.91\00:01:23.88 I also like to walk. Okay. 00:01:23.91\00:01:25.71 Walk everyday. So you're a musician? 00:01:25.75\00:01:27.72 I'm a musician. Wonderful. 00:01:27.75\00:01:29.65 Well, we're studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:01:29.68\00:01:33.05 And last time we talked about Peter. 00:01:33.09\00:01:36.52 He is the author of these books. So who is Peter? 00:01:36.56\00:01:40.50 You know, it's interesting how much we can find out 00:01:40.53\00:01:42.20 about this man just by reading the New Testament. 00:01:42.23\00:01:44.73 We particularly find out about him by reading the Gospels. 00:01:44.77\00:01:47.84 And there, of course, most people will realize 00:01:47.87\00:01:50.11 that Peter was a fisherman by trade. 00:01:50.14\00:01:52.77 He lived in the area of the Galilee. 00:01:52.81\00:01:57.41 Near the lake there was a town called Capernaum 00:01:57.45\00:02:01.18 where he lived, although that's not where he was born. 00:02:01.22\00:02:04.79 He was raised evidently in the town of the Bethsaida 00:02:04.82\00:02:07.92 which is a little further to the north 00:02:07.96\00:02:10.19 and on the other side of the river Jordon. 00:02:10.23\00:02:15.06 Today, actually Bethsaida is not next to the lake 00:02:15.10\00:02:18.00 because the area is prone to earthquakes. 00:02:18.03\00:02:21.07 And there was a mudslide and it all got filled in. 00:02:21.10\00:02:24.84 Bethsaida is now up on a little promontory 00:02:24.87\00:02:26.74 that's maybe couple of miles or kilometers away from the lake. 00:02:26.78\00:02:30.71 But he settled in Capernaum. 00:02:30.75\00:02:32.81 We know that he was a married man, 00:02:32.85\00:02:34.98 because Mark tells us that his mother-in-law was ill 00:02:35.02\00:02:39.89 and Jesus healed her. 00:02:39.92\00:02:41.76 And we also know his father's name was John. 00:02:41.79\00:02:45.73 And of course, he gets the name Peter. 00:02:45.76\00:02:50.37 His actual name was Simon, given name was Simon. 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.27 And it's Jesus who gives him 00:02:53.30\00:02:54.84 the nick name Peter, which means rock. 00:02:54.87\00:02:58.94 So his name is Rock and his name would be-- 00:02:58.97\00:03:03.95 today might be Johnson because he's son of John, Johnson. 00:03:03.98\00:03:07.45 So this is Rock Johnson. 00:03:07.48\00:03:09.48 And he has a brother named Andrew. 00:03:09.52\00:03:13.69 And so he becomes a very important person 00:03:13.72\00:03:18.23 among the apostles. 00:03:18.26\00:03:19.63 Whenever we have the 12 disciples listed 00:03:19.66\00:03:22.40 or mentioned in the New Testament, 00:03:22.43\00:03:24.83 Peter is always listed first. 00:03:24.87\00:03:27.94 We know that he talks more than 00:03:27.97\00:03:31.17 anybody else in the Gospels. 00:03:31.21\00:03:34.24 And to many of us he seems like 00:03:34.28\00:03:37.25 he sort of blurts things out before, you know, 00:03:37.28\00:03:39.61 he thinks about them. 00:03:39.65\00:03:42.18 But here's the first one to confess 00:03:42.22\00:03:45.25 that Jesus is the Messiah, 00:03:45.29\00:03:48.12 but he also has this great detriment to Him 00:03:48.16\00:03:52.59 that he denies Jesus three times. 00:03:52.63\00:03:55.40 So the man went through incredible, 00:03:55.43\00:03:59.17 you know, experiences. 00:03:59.20\00:04:01.80 His calling that Jesus gave him is interesting to look at. 00:04:01.84\00:04:06.37 So I want us to turn to Luke 5 and read verses 1 to 11. 00:04:06.41\00:04:11.98 Do you want me to read that? Yes, if you would. 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.99 "So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him 00:04:18.02\00:04:20.56 to hear the word of God that He stood 00:04:20.59\00:04:22.92 by the Lake of Gennesaret. 00:04:22.96\00:04:25.29 And saw two boats standing by the lake 00:04:25.33\00:04:27.56 but the fishermen had gone from them 00:04:27.60\00:04:29.73 and were washing their nets. 00:04:29.76\00:04:31.53 Then He got into one of the boats, 00:04:31.57\00:04:33.80 which was Simon's, and asked him to put out 00:04:33.84\00:04:36.64 a little from the land. 00:04:36.67\00:04:39.57 And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 00:04:39.61\00:04:42.91 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, 00:04:42.94\00:04:45.85 'Launch out into the deep 00:04:45.88\00:04:47.95 and let down your nets for a catch.' 00:04:47.98\00:04:50.59 But Simon Peter answered and said to Him, 00:04:50.62\00:04:52.49 'Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing. 00:04:52.52\00:04:56.22 Nevertheless, at Your word I will let it down the net.' 00:04:56.26\00:05:00.63 And when they had done this, 00:05:00.66\00:05:02.50 they caught a great number of fish, 00:05:02.53\00:05:04.97 and their net was breaking. 00:05:05.00\00:05:08.04 So they signaled to their partners 00:05:08.07\00:05:12.77 in the other boat to come and help them. 00:05:12.81\00:05:15.11 And they came and filled both the boats 00:05:15.14\00:05:17.15 so that they began to sink. 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.25 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, 00:05:19.28\00:05:21.95 saying, 'Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.' 00:05:21.98\00:05:26.76 For he and all who were with him were astonished 00:05:26.79\00:05:29.69 at the catch of fish which they had taken. 00:05:29.72\00:05:33.06 And so also were James and John, 00:05:33.09\00:05:35.26 and the sons of Zebedee-- or the sons of Zebedee, 00:05:35.30\00:05:37.87 who were partners with Simon. 00:05:37.90\00:05:39.57 And Jesus said to Simon, 'Do not be afraid. 00:05:39.60\00:05:42.64 From now on you will catch men.'" 00:05:42.67\00:05:45.67 Verse 11 as well. 00:05:45.71\00:05:47.84 "And when they had brought their boats to land, 00:05:47.88\00:05:51.05 they forsook all and followed Him." 00:05:51.08\00:05:54.32 So what kind of a person would you say Peter was 00:05:54.35\00:05:56.58 probably after this experience? 00:05:56.62\00:05:58.42 Well, sounds like he was a common man. 00:05:58.45\00:06:02.76 He felt that he was not worthy of getting-- 00:06:02.79\00:06:06.70 drawing closer to God. Yes, yes, he was a fisherman. 00:06:06.73\00:06:09.80 He was a fisherman. So he was a businessman. 00:06:09.83\00:06:12.70 We can say he was a businessman. 00:06:12.73\00:06:15.70 He seemed to know what he was doing, because apparently 00:06:15.74\00:06:18.44 he had experience fishing in this manner. 00:06:18.47\00:06:20.74 And in this case something spectacular happened, 00:06:20.78\00:06:24.65 some kind of miracle and he was very surprised. 00:06:24.68\00:06:27.85 Apparently he had not had such an experience before fishing. 00:06:27.88\00:06:31.29 Yeah. And he has partners so he's, you know, 00:06:31.32\00:06:35.02 he's a person within that culture who, 00:06:35.06\00:06:38.96 you know, knows how to have a livelihood, 00:06:38.99\00:06:41.26 makes his way in life, has a boat. 00:06:41.30\00:06:44.17 And that's, you know, he has some success in life. 00:06:44.20\00:06:48.40 He's not poverty stricken, you know, down and out. 00:06:48.44\00:06:52.77 So would you say he's like the CEO of himself, 00:06:52.81\00:06:56.31 I guess, fisherman? 00:06:56.34\00:06:57.71 I would say he's like a small business owner. Okay. 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.65 You know, today's small businesses would have, 00:06:59.68\00:07:03.18 you know, couple of employees. 00:07:03.22\00:07:04.65 And they'd have some inventory. 00:07:04.69\00:07:06.05 And they'd have a going concern. 00:07:06.09\00:07:08.32 And they would be making their life and they'd be, 00:07:08.36\00:07:10.23 you know, going through it. 00:07:10.26\00:07:11.63 So he fits in like a small business people today. 00:07:11.66\00:07:15.20 Now this experience that he has here in Luke 5 00:07:15.23\00:07:20.97 has the characteristics of something 00:07:21.00\00:07:22.90 we call a theophany and-- Sounds like theology. 00:07:22.94\00:07:27.58 Yeah, theology. It certainly got the word God in it 00:07:27.61\00:07:31.35 but at the end of that the verb 00:07:31.38\00:07:33.52 "pheno" is a Greek verb actually. 00:07:33.55\00:07:36.12 It means "to appear." 00:07:36.15\00:07:37.55 So a theophany is when God appears. 00:07:37.59\00:07:40.79 And when God appears in the Bible or a divine 00:07:40.82\00:07:43.56 being appears or an angel appears, 00:07:43.59\00:07:46.03 there's a very typical kind of response that takes place. 00:07:46.06\00:07:49.86 It has five parts, five steps. 00:07:49.90\00:07:52.20 The first step is the appearance of the divine glory, okay? 00:07:52.23\00:07:57.14 The second step is human fear, all right? 00:07:57.17\00:08:02.21 The third step is the angel or God 00:08:02.24\00:08:05.18 or whoever has appeared says, "don't be afraid." 00:08:05.21\00:08:10.12 Then there is some revelation that is shared. 00:08:10.15\00:08:13.15 The divine being came, God came for a reason 00:08:13.19\00:08:16.66 to share something. 00:08:16.69\00:08:18.59 And then the fifth step is human response, okay. 00:08:18.63\00:08:21.90 So we have divine glory. Then we have human fear. 00:08:21.93\00:08:26.94 Then we have don't be afraid. 00:08:26.97\00:08:29.60 Then we have revelation, and then finally human response. 00:08:29.64\00:08:33.54 Now my question is can you see those things 00:08:33.58\00:08:36.71 taking place here in this chapter? 00:08:36.75\00:08:39.28 Well, maybe you can help me out here. 00:08:39.31\00:08:40.98 Yeah. What is the first one again? 00:08:41.02\00:08:42.48 Glory. Glory. 00:08:42.52\00:08:43.89 So we're looking for glory in the calling of Peter. 00:08:43.92\00:08:46.99 Of Peter. And there's no reference. 00:08:47.02\00:08:48.66 The word glory doesn't appear there. 00:08:48.69\00:08:50.06 No, there isn't. Okay. 00:08:50.09\00:08:51.46 I'm gonna have a hard time finding out. 00:08:51.49\00:08:52.99 Well, the glory is the miracle. Okay. 00:08:53.03\00:08:55.66 When God shows something that it amazes people, 00:08:55.70\00:08:58.73 you know, that's the glory of His power. 00:08:58.77\00:09:01.24 It's linked up with His power. 00:09:01.27\00:09:02.64 I'm taking a guess here but it seems that the glory, 00:09:02.67\00:09:04.81 the miracle was that they caught a lot of fish. 00:09:04.84\00:09:08.14 Yep. But how is that a miracle? 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.75 Fishermen are used to catching a lot of fish. 00:09:10.78\00:09:13.92 Maybe one day wasn't a good day. 00:09:13.95\00:09:15.42 Maybe another day, you know? 00:09:15.45\00:09:16.89 Yeah, so this is a good day 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.82 because this is during the day time. 00:09:18.85\00:09:21.56 And you notice Peter reacts to Him when he says, 00:09:21.59\00:09:23.73 "let out and your nets down." 00:09:23.76\00:09:25.89 And he says, "we fished all night." 00:09:25.93\00:09:27.50 That's when you'd catch the fish. 00:09:27.50\00:09:28.86 The fish couldn't see the nets during the night 00:09:28.90\00:09:30.80 and so you could catch the fish, not during the day. 00:09:30.83\00:09:32.73 So he knows what he is talking about 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.14 because he's experienced? 00:09:34.17\00:09:35.50 Yeah. And he thinks, "oh, this is a carpenter. 00:09:35.54\00:09:38.07 He doesn't know what He's talking about. 00:09:38.11\00:09:39.67 But he says, "okay, Master, 00:09:39.71\00:09:41.08 because you say so I'll let down the nets." 00:09:41.11\00:09:43.75 And then they take fish they can't, you know, 00:09:43.78\00:09:47.25 they can't take care of them. 00:09:47.28\00:09:48.65 There's--it fills both boats to overflowing. 00:09:48.68\00:09:51.59 The boats are about to sink, you know. 00:09:51.62\00:09:53.79 Now when you see a miracle happen it's-- 00:09:53.82\00:09:59.09 it really strikes your life. 00:09:59.13\00:10:00.70 You're like, "whoa, this is like going to Niagara Falls 00:10:00.73\00:10:05.73 and being next to this huge water, you know?" 00:10:05.77\00:10:07.54 It's like--it's almost scary, you see. So-- 00:10:07.57\00:10:10.31 Especially if you're an unbeliever, 00:10:10.34\00:10:11.71 you don't really believe in miracles, 00:10:11.74\00:10:13.11 you've never seen one, and you're not used to that, 00:10:13.14\00:10:15.01 you've never heard of something like that and suddenly... 00:10:15.04\00:10:17.05 Yeah. So the glory is the miracle. 00:10:17.08\00:10:19.68 The second step is the human fear. 00:10:19.71\00:10:23.72 That's referred to in here. 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.72 Actually it says, "he and all of his-- 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.99 they were completely astonished," in verse 9 it says. 00:10:29.02\00:10:32.46 And in fact, Peter's response to Him, 00:10:32.49\00:10:35.03 "depart me--from me for I am a sinful man, Oh, Lord." 00:10:35.06\00:10:38.97 Here's that human fear, that's the drawing back 00:10:39.00\00:10:41.64 from that which is divine because it's too scary, 00:10:41.67\00:10:43.84 'cause it's too powerful, okay? 00:10:43.87\00:10:45.64 So that's the human fear. 00:10:45.67\00:10:47.34 Does the words "don't be afraid" appear? 00:10:47.38\00:10:49.78 I don't see it. Hmm. 00:10:49.81\00:10:51.85 Oh, wait, verse 10 does say, 00:10:51.88\00:10:53.45 Jesus said, "do not be afraid." Okay, that's here. 00:10:53.48\00:10:56.95 Yeah, you see. And then the next step is the revelation. 00:10:56.99\00:11:00.66 Now here's the revelation. 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.06 And it's the next words of Jesus. Read them again. 00:11:02.09\00:11:03.79 "From now on you will catch men." 00:11:03.83\00:11:06.53 Yes, so this is the revelation. 00:11:06.56\00:11:08.86 This is the reason for the catch of fish. 00:11:08.90\00:11:10.90 And this is the start of their ministry. 00:11:10.93\00:11:13.34 And how about the human response? 00:11:13.37\00:11:16.87 Well, it says here, verse 11, 00:11:16.91\00:11:18.74 "they brought their boats to land, 00:11:18.77\00:11:20.14 they forsook all and followed Him." 00:11:20.18\00:11:22.78 Yep. So there it is. Here's this human response. 00:11:22.81\00:11:26.95 So it's a typical theophany, 00:11:26.98\00:11:29.48 kind of a little bit hidden to our view. 00:11:29.52\00:11:31.42 It doesn't have some of the other characteristics 00:11:31.45\00:11:33.76 that, you know, people might usually think, 00:11:33.79\00:11:36.02 the reference to glory or something. 00:11:36.06\00:11:37.66 But all of them that are there and this is exactly 00:11:37.69\00:11:40.53 what the call of Peter is about. 00:11:40.56\00:11:41.90 It's the appearance of God. He calls them to a new life. 00:11:41.93\00:11:45.10 He changes the way they are. All right? 00:11:45.13\00:11:47.24 So this is this guy Peter 00:11:47.27\00:11:48.77 that wrote this book that we're reading. 00:11:48.80\00:11:50.27 Oh, you know, now it makes me think about 00:11:50.31\00:11:52.24 my experience regarding that theophany, 00:11:52.27\00:11:55.21 if I ever had that experience. 00:11:55.24\00:11:56.61 Well, there was a miracle and then eventually 00:11:56.64\00:11:58.98 I made that calling to accept Jesus and follow Him. 00:11:59.01\00:12:02.18 Have we all gone through something like that? 00:12:02.22\00:12:04.09 Yes. I mean, you sense God's presence in your life. 00:12:04.12\00:12:08.36 It's like me sensing the call to ministry. 00:12:08.39\00:12:10.79 It took quite sometime for me to really sense that yes, 00:12:10.83\00:12:14.40 I should be in ministry. This is where I belong. 00:12:14.46\00:12:16.63 But I remember going and praying one particular day, 00:12:16.67\00:12:20.10 taking time and praying about this 00:12:20.14\00:12:21.77 and feeling convicted that God wanted me 00:12:21.80\00:12:24.44 to be a minister of the Gospel. 00:12:24.47\00:12:26.44 And thanks to God, I've been faithful to that idea 00:12:26.47\00:12:30.58 ever since then and have had a wonderful ministry 00:12:30.61\00:12:33.95 that I've been involved in. 00:12:33.98\00:12:35.35 So that's where Peter starts, you know? 00:12:35.38\00:12:36.75 He gets this ministry involved. 00:12:36.79\00:12:38.15 And the most important one would be the human response, 00:12:38.19\00:12:41.09 you know, because God makes miracles all the time. 00:12:41.12\00:12:42.69 And do we see a theophany throughout the Bible, 00:12:42.72\00:12:44.93 not just the New Testament? Yes. 00:12:44.96\00:12:46.33 We've been watching for those theophanies 00:12:46.36\00:12:47.76 and then do we let them have that experience 00:12:47.76\00:12:50.23 of changing our life and moving us forward. 00:12:50.27\00:12:53.00 So Peter then is writing to these people. 00:12:53.03\00:12:56.54 Who are these people right? 00:12:56.57\00:12:57.94 We said last time, these are Jews. 00:12:57.97\00:12:59.34 Probably Jews and Gentiles. 00:12:59.37\00:13:00.81 They live in what is today present day Turkey. 00:13:00.84\00:13:03.21 That area of the world actually 00:13:03.24\00:13:04.71 became a very important center for Christianity. 00:13:04.75\00:13:09.12 It had a good growth of Christianity. 00:13:09.15\00:13:12.09 And early Christianity was very strong 00:13:12.12\00:13:15.02 in that area of the world. 00:13:15.06\00:13:16.49 So these are Jews and Gentiles. 00:13:16.52\00:13:17.89 They are living mainly in rural areas. 00:13:17.93\00:13:20.66 They are separate from the world around them, 00:13:20.70\00:13:22.83 because their practices are of 00:13:22.86\00:13:27.27 what we read in the Bible, you know? 00:13:27.30\00:13:28.94 They were not doing the kind of pagan practices 00:13:28.97\00:13:31.21 that were around them. 00:13:31.24\00:13:32.61 So they didn't fit in to the kind of people 00:13:32.64\00:13:36.34 that were their neighbors. 00:13:36.38\00:13:38.25 They didn't fit well with them. Okay. 00:13:38.28\00:13:40.82 And, Dr. Shepherd, I'm looking forward 00:13:40.85\00:13:42.22 to hearing more of these people 00:13:42.25\00:13:43.85 whom Peter is writing to. 00:13:43.89\00:13:46.32 We're gonna take a very brief pause. 00:13:46.35\00:13:48.99 After this just join us as we continue 00:13:49.02\00:13:51.46 studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter. 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.80
