Lady Elgin, a passenger steamer,

disasters in American history.

As desperate survivors were
struggling against the waves

trying to stay afloat,
there was a young sophomore from

Northwestern
University named Edward Spencer

who was walking
with some of his fellow

students along the shore of the
lake and as he saw this disaster

unfolding he plunged into
the rough surf and began pulling

people to safety. Repeatedly he
went back out, battling against

the choppy waves and even his
own exhaustion. He was struck

and injured by some of the
floating debris and still Edward

again swimming to the wreck and

rescued passenger. After saving
