Hello and welcome to Praise. I'm Kelly Mowrer 00:00:20.84\00:00:24.13 On September 8, 1860 the Lady Elgin, a passenger steamer, 00:00:24.17\00:00:29.17 sank during a storm on Lake Michigan. Over 400 people died. 00:00:29.20\00:00:33.63 It was one of the worst maritime disasters in American history. 00:00:33.67\00:00:38.07 As desperate survivors were struggling against the waves 00:00:38.10\00:00:41.66 trying to stay afloat, there was a young sophomore from 00:00:41.70\00:00:45.19 Northwestern University named Edward Spencer 00:00:45.23\00:00:47.62 who was walking with some of his fellow 00:00:47.65\00:00:49.70 students along the shore of the lake and as he saw this disaster 00:00:49.73\00:00:53.18 unfolding he plunged into the rough surf and began pulling 00:00:53.22\00:00:57.00 people to safety. Repeatedly he went back out, battling against 00:00:57.03\00:01:01.52 the choppy waves and even his own exhaustion. He was struck 00:01:01.55\00:01:05.71 and injured by some of the floating debris and still Edward 00:01:05.75\00:01:09.69 kept diving back again and again swimming to the wreck and 00:01:09.73\00:01:13.68 returning with yet another rescued passenger. After saving 00:01:13.71\00:01:18.08 17 lives he collapsed on the beach pretty much delirious with 00:01:18.12\00:01:22.45 exhaustion. His physical condition was forever affected 00:01:22.49\00:01:26.05 because of the injuries he suffered rescuing all those 00:01:26.08\00:01:29.58 people that day. He spent the rest of his life using a walker 00:01:29.61\00:01:33.59 or a wheel chair and never fully regained his health. Several 00:01:33.63\00:01:37.96 times during the rescue his friends urged him to remain on 00:01:38.00\00:01:42.26 shore and not go back yet again into that water. But Edward kept 00:01:42.29\00:01:46.25 replying, I've got to do my best, I've got to do my best. 00:01:46.28\00:01:50.11 Years later, inspired by Edward's story Ensign Edwin 00:01:50.15\00:01:56.24 Young wrote the beloved old hymn I Wonder, Have I Done My Best 00:01:56.28\00:02:00.78 For Jesus. The chorus says, How many are the lost that I have 00:02:00.81\00:02:05.28 lifted, how many are the chained I've helped to free? 00:02:05.32\00:02:09.24 I wonder, have I done my best for Jesus when he has done so 00:02:09.27\00:02:14.51 much for me? Today I want us to spend some time thinking both 00:02:14.55\00:02:19.31 about what Jesus has done for us and what we are called to do in 00:02:19.35\00:02:24.23 his name for others. Many of us, probably most of us, will never 00:02:24.26\00:02:29.11 face that dramatic life and death test of a disaster like 00:02:29.14\00:02:32.89 Edward Spencer did, but we're all called to serve. Some of you 00:02:32.92\00:02:38.07 watching might already be feeling pretty much worn out 00:02:38.10\00:02:41.34 wondering how in the world are you going to be able to help 00:02:41.38\00:02:43.94 serve others when you feel like you're barely keeping your head 00:02:43.97\00:02:47.77 above water. I've felt that way myself so many times. The Holy 00:02:47.80\00:02:51.55 Spirit keeps gently reminding me that my strength and my energy 00:02:51.59\00:02:56.15 and my service comes only from Jesus, my source. If we try to 00:02:56.18\00:03:00.26 serve in our own strength, we're going to fail. We have nothing 00:03:00.30\00:03:04.44 of value to offer apart from our connection to Christ. He is both 00:03:04.47\00:03:08.58 what I will need share and how I will share it meaningfully. 00:03:08.61\00:03:13.05 So let's begin now with two songs that will turn our hearts 00:03:13.09\00:03:17.45 again completely to our source reminding us to let go of trying 00:03:17.49\00:03:21.57 to handle things on our own and instead just draw close to him 00:03:21.61\00:03:25.66 and find every burden lifted and every thirst satisfied. 00:03:25.69\00:03:31.84 What a Friend We Have in Jesus Lyndon Carringer 00:03:31.87\00:03:35.16 What a friend we have in Jesus 00:03:35.20\00:03:44.15 All our sins and griefs to bear. 00:03:44.18\00:03:53.09 What a privilege to carry 00:03:53.13\00:04:02.79 everything to God in prayer. 00:04:02.83\00:04:11.14 Oh what peace we often forfeit, 00:04:11.18\00:04:20.21 Oh what needless pain we bear, 00:04:20.25\00:04:29.10 All because we do not carry 00:04:29.14\00:04:37.87 everything to God in prayer. 00:04:37.91\00:04:46.35 Have we trials and temptations? 00:04:46.38\00:04:54.79 Is there trouble anywhere? 00:04:54.83\00:05:03.83 We should never be discouraged. 00:05:03.86\00:05:11.91 Take it to the Lord in prayer. 00:05:11.94\00:05:21.03 Can we find a friend so faithful 00:05:21.07\00:05:29.49 who will all our sorrows share 00:05:29.52\00:05:38.87 Jesus knows our every weakness. 00:05:38.91\00:05:47.35 Take it to the Lord in prayer. 00:05:47.38\00:05:55.78 ¤ ¤ 00:05:55.82\00:06:14.10 Are we weak and heavy laden, 00:06:14.13\00:06:22.22 cumbered with a load of care? 00:06:22.25\00:06:30.07 Precious Savior still our refuge 00:06:30.11\00:06:38.42 Take it to the Lord in prayer. 00:06:38.46\00:06:46.74 Do thy friends despise, 00:06:46.78\00:06:51.31 forsake thee.
