Hello I'm Kelly Mowrer, and welcome to Praise. 00:00:20.79\00:00:23.63 I love the beauty of David song in Psalm 103, 00:00:23.64\00:00:27.70 where he writes, "Bless the Lord O my soul, 00:00:27.71\00:00:30.45 and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 00:00:30.46\00:00:33.68 Bless the Lord O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. 00:00:33.69\00:00:38.45 You know, it's pretty amazing and pretty sad, 00:00:38.46\00:00:41.70 how easily I and we all forget the benefits 00:00:41.71\00:00:45.13 and the blessings of God. 00:00:45.14\00:00:47.20 We probably, occasionally remember 00:00:47.21\00:00:49.13 and take note of the extraordinary blessings 00:00:49.14\00:00:52.01 but I know that far too often 00:00:52.02\00:00:53.96 I'm going through my days without conscious awareness 00:00:53.97\00:00:56.71 and thankfulness to God for all the blessings 00:00:56.72\00:00:59.30 that are following me minute by minute. 00:00:59.31\00:01:01.99 And unless we intentionally mark 00:01:02.00\00:01:03.40 and remember His blessings. 00:01:03.41\00:01:05.22 If we make our stones of remembrance, 00:01:05.23\00:01:07.76 how much it affects our walk with God 00:01:07.77\00:01:09.51 when we don't do that. 00:01:09.52\00:01:10.94 First, He can cause us to doubt. 00:01:10.95\00:01:13.36 We forget how He's led us in the past 00:01:13.37\00:01:15.50 and that leaves us feeling unsure 00:01:15.51\00:01:17.70 that He's with us in our present circumstances, 00:01:17.71\00:01:20.34 also it can affect our prayers. 00:01:20.35\00:01:22.22 Paul tells us to have no anxiety about anything, 00:01:22.23\00:01:25.41 but with prayer and thanksgiving, 00:01:25.42\00:01:27.59 to make our requests knowing the God. 00:01:27.60\00:01:30.34 But how can we thank Him for His blessings 00:01:30.35\00:01:32.20 if we're not bothering 00:01:32.21\00:01:33.20 to even notice and remember them. 00:01:33.21\00:01:35.07 Today we're going to think especially 00:01:36.10\00:01:38.15 on the blessings of God, 00:01:38.16\00:01:39.96 and how we can come to Him as our friend, 00:01:39.97\00:01:43.30 talking with Him in prayer, 00:01:43.31\00:01:45.48 as we bring Him our request 00:01:45.49\00:01:47.46 with prayer and thanksgiving. 00:01:47.47\00:01:49.83 Remembering how He's led us 00:01:49.84\00:01:51.56 and cared for us in the past. 00:01:51.57\00:01:53.91 Here is Denise Barclay, 00:01:53.92\00:01:55.37 someone I'm always blessed to hear 00:01:55.38\00:01:57.03 and she's singing a very favorite song of mine, 00:01:57.04\00:01:59.73 He'll do it again 00:01:59.74\00:02:00.99 You may be down and feel the God 00:02:04.68\00:02:10.10 Has somehow forgotten 00:02:10.11\00:02:13.19 That you are faced with circumstances 00:02:15.49\00:02:20.72 You can't get through 00:02:20.73\00:02:23.67 Right now it seems that there's no way out 00:02:26.11\00:02:31.65 And you're going under 00:02:31.66\00:02:34.51 But God's proven time and time again 00:02:36.66\00:02:41.93 He'll take care of you 00:02:41.94\00:02:45.46 And He'll do it again 00:02:46.68\00:02:51.42 He'll do it again 00:02:52.46\00:02:55.20 If you just take a look 00:02:57.31\00:03:00.22 At where you are now 00:03:00.23\00:03:03.03 And where you've been 00:03:03.04\00:03:06.76 Hasn't He always come through for you 00:03:06.77\00:03:13.58 He's the same now as then 00:03:13.59\00:03:16.90 Oh, You may not know how 00:03:18.23\00:03:21.65 You may not know when 00:03:21.66\00:03:23.93 But He'll do it again 00:03:23.94\00:03:27.83 God knows the pain that you're going through 00:03:29.56\00:03:34.72 And He knows how you're hurting 00:03:34.73\00:03:38.56 You see he knows how your heart 00:03:40.20\00:03:45.75 been broken in two 00:03:45.76\00:03:49.15 Oh but He's the God of the sun, 00:03:50.54\00:03:53.82 stars and the moon 00:03:53.83\00:03:56.43 And He is your Father 00:03:56.44\00:04:00.48 If He can calm the storm 00:04:00.49\00:04:04.43 He'll find the way to take care of you 00:04:04.44\00:04:11.48 And He'll do it again 00:04:11.49\00:04:16.31 He'll do it again 00:04:16.32\00:04:20.27 If you just take a look 00:04:22.30\00:04:25.43 At where you are now 00:04:25.44\00:04:28.07 And where you've been 00:04:28.08\00:04:31.82 Hasn't He always come through for you 00:04:31.83\00:04:38.65 He's the same God now that He was then 00:04:38.66\00:04:41.75 Oh, yes He is 00:04:41.76\00:04:43.98 You may not know how 00:04:43.99\00:04:46.43 You may not know when 00:04:46.44\00:04:48.90 But He'll do it again 00:04:48.91\00:04:53.17 Oh, he'll do it again 00:04:53.18\00:04:58.69 He'll do it again 00:04:59.85\00:05:02.84 If you just take a look 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.32 At where you are now 00:05:07.33\00:05:10.11 And where you've been 00:05:10.12\00:05:13.82 Hasn't He always come through for you 00:05:13.83\00:05:20.73 He's the same God now that He was then 00:05:20.74\00:05:23.89 Oh, yes He is 00:05:23.90\00:05:25.95 You may not know how 00:05:25.96\00:05:28.78 You may not know when 00:05:28.79\00:05:31.10 But He'll do it again 00:05:31.11\00:05:35.65 Yes you may not know how 00:05:35.66\00:05:41.80 Or you may not know when 00:05:41.81\00:05:45.56 You may not know how 00:05:47.38\00:05:50.38 You may not know when 00:05:50.39\00:05:53.30 But He'll do it again 00:05:53.31\00:05:58.61 How long has it been 00:06:19.83\00:06:23.37 since you talked with the Lord 00:06:25.52\00:06:30.45 And told him your heart's hidden secrets 00:06:30.46\00:06:38.29 How long since you prayed? 00:06:42.39\00:06:47.18 How long since you stayed on your knees 00:06:48.20\00:06:56.12 till the light shone through 00:06:57.60\00:07:01.37 How long has it been 00:07:06.76\00:07:10.50 since your mind felt at ease? 00:07:12.37\00:07:17.17 How long since your heart knew no burden? 00:07:17.18\00:07:25.17 Can you call him your friend 00:07:28.81\00:07:34.66 How long has it been since you knew 00:07:34.67\00:07:42.40 that he cares for you? 00:07:44.55\00:07:49.35 How long has it been 00:07:53.35\00:07:57.32 since you knelt by your bed 00:07:59.06\00:08:03.87 And prayed to the Lord up in heaven 00:08:03.88\00:08:11.58 How long since you knew 00:08:15.46\00:08:20.23 that He would answer you 00:08:20.24\00:08:26.32 And He would keep you 00:08:26.33\00:08:30.99 the long night through 00:08:31.00\00:08:35.60 Tell me how long has it been 00:08:38.40\00:08:43.73 since you woke with the dawn 00:08:45.27\00:08:49.75 And felt like the day is worth of living 00:08:49.76\00:08:57.67 Can you call him your friend 00:09:01.54\00:09:07.80 How long has it been 00:09:07.81\00:09:13.14 since you knew that he cares, 00:09:14.33\00:09:18.79 since you knew that Jesus cares for you 00:09:18.80\00:09:25.32 Since you knew that he cares, 00:09:25.33\00:09:29.59 since you knew that Jesus cares 00:09:30.86\00:09:34.04 Oh, yes He does since you knew, since you knew, 00:09:34.05\00:09:40.86 Since you knew, oh 00:09:40.87\00:09:44.98 since you knew 00:09:49.99\00:09:54.07 that Jesus cares for you 00:09:55.88\00:10:03.87 for you 00:10:06.26\00:10:09.67 As I travel around the country 00:10:16.29\00:10:17.62 speaking and giving concerts, 00:10:17.63\00:10:19.01 I love to share stories and historical settings, 00:10:19.02\00:10:23.62 the lessons from the past 00:10:23.63\00:10:24.88 that can help us in the present. 00:10:24.89\00:10:26.76 And I find it songs become so much more meaningful to me 00:10:26.77\00:10:29.92 when I know what happened in the life of the writer 00:10:29.93\00:10:32.77 that led to the song being written. 00:10:32.78\00:10:35.20 I've been asked several times if I know of hymns 00:10:35.21\00:10:37.62 that were written out of a joyous experience, 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.10 so many of them seem to be written 00:10:40.11\00:10:42.42 in the dark nights of the soul 00:10:42.43\00:10:44.29 and they are a wonderful comforting testimony. 00:10:44.30\00:10:47.05 But there are songs of joyful praise too. 00:10:47.06\00:10:50.49 And one of them comes from a lady 00:10:50.50\00:10:51.89 who clearly knew God as her personal friend. 00:10:51.90\00:10:54.58 Over 100 years ago, 00:10:54.59\00:10:56.38 a 37 year old housewife named Andy Hox 00:10:56.39\00:10:59.89 living happy and fulfilled as a wife 00:10:59.90\00:11:02.13 and a mother was working around her house one day 00:11:02.14\00:11:04.67 when she was suddenly overcome 00:11:04.68\00:11:05.80 with a sense of nearness of God to her. 00:11:05.81\00:11:09.13 And she felt like she didn't want to ever go 00:11:09.14\00:11:11.11 another moment without this 00:11:11.12\00:11:12.52 awesome awareness of God as her friend. 00:11:12.53\00:11:15.33 She was so moved with the love and joy 00:11:15.34\00:11:17.77 of that moment that she sat down 00:11:17.78\00:11:19.00 and wrote these words, I need the very hour, 00:11:19.01\00:11:22.43 most gracious Lord. 00:11:22.44\00:11:24.31 No Tender voice like Thine can peace afford. 00:11:24.32\00:11:28.61 She gave the words to her pastor Robert Lowry 00:11:28.62\00:11:31.57 who added the chorus and the tune 00:11:31.58\00:11:34.29 and the song was first published in 1872. 00:11:34.30\00:11:37.61 Many years later Andy lost her beloved husband 00:11:37.62\00:11:40.45 and suddenly she had a very new 00:11:40.46\00:11:43.07 and real insight into the gift 00:11:43.08\00:11:44.94 that God had given her in that song she wrote 00:11:44.95\00:11:47.33 I did not understand it first 00:11:47.34\00:11:49.35 why this hymn had touched 00:11:49.36\00:11:51.18 the great throbbing heart of humanity. 00:11:51.19\00:11:53.85 It was not until long after 00:11:53.86\00:11:56.18 when the shadow of great loss felt over my way 00:11:56.19\00:11:59.36 that I understood something of the comforting 00:11:59.37\00:12:01.49 power in the words which I have been 00:12:01.50\00:12:03.56 permitted to give out to others, 00:12:03.57\00:12:05.59 in my hour of sweet sovereignty and peace. 00:12:05.60\00:12:09.50 Listen as my friend E.T. Everett plays 00:12:09.51\00:12:11.95 "I need thee every hour." 00:12:11.96\00:12:14.05 It's only me Lord 00:16:17.36\00:16:22.61 It's only me 00:16:24.18\00:16:28.56 Seems like I call you everyday 00:16:28.57\00:16:33.24 And You always know what I will say 00:16:34.90\00:16:40.29 But You take the time to help me see 00:16:42.36\00:16:46.19 The kind of person I should be 00:16:46.20\00:16:49.30 You always listen 00:16:49.31\00:16:53.50 Here I stand so small and frail 00:16:55.39\00:17:00.65 So afraid that I might fail 00:17:02.16\00:17:06.27 But You fill my heart with happiness 00:17:07.33\00:17:10.64 You care for me with tenderness 00:17:10.65\00:17:13.64 It's only me Lord 00:17:13.65\00:17:16.68 It's only me 00:17:18.86\00:17:20.99 Lord I love You 00:17:26.04\00:17:29.23 Take my heart 00:17:29.24\00:17:31.94 Help me live right from the start 00:17:33.07\00:17:38.50 Thanks for bearing all my pain 00:17:38.51\00:17:44.70 And making bright my day again 00:17:44.71\00:17:49.44 It's only me Lord 00:17:49.45\00:17:53.10 It's only me 00:17:55.40\00:17:58.00 It's only me Lord 00:18:01.47\00:18:05.76 It's only me 00:18:07.57\00:18:10.29 Joseph Scriven was born in Ireland in 1819. 00:18:26.05\00:18:29.71 He graduated from Trinity College, 00:18:29.72\00:18:31.77 and was engaged to be married. 00:18:31.78\00:18:33.84 But on the night before his wedding his fiancé drowned. 00:18:33.85\00:18:37.26 And Joseph was devastated and actually left Ireland, 00:18:37.27\00:18:40.09 moved to Canada where he became a teacher. 00:18:40.10\00:18:43.37 Several years passed and he met another young woman 00:18:43.38\00:18:45.61 named Eliza and after sometime they became engaged. 00:18:45.62\00:18:49.74 But shortly before their wedding Eliza also died. 00:18:49.75\00:18:53.78 After the death of his second fiancé 00:18:53.79\00:18:55.89 Joseph joined the Plymouth Brethren and spent his life 00:18:55.90\00:18:58.98 helping the aged members of the community 00:18:58.99\00:19:01.01 and during this time Joseph's mother 00:19:01.02\00:19:03.41 who was still living back in Ireland wrote him a letter 00:19:03.42\00:19:06.92 about how discouraged and depressed she felt. 00:19:06.93\00:19:10.67 Joseph responded back to her and to try to comfort her 00:19:10.68\00:19:14.45 and encourage her, he wrote a poem in that letter, 00:19:14.46\00:19:18.20 that said, what a friend we have in Jesus 00:19:18.21\00:19:21.38 all our sins and grief to bear, 00:19:21.39\00:19:24.86 what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. 00:19:24.87\00:19:28.06 Oh, what peace we often forfeit 00:19:28.07\00:19:30.60 and owe what needless pain we bear, all because 00:19:30.61\00:19:35.16 we do not carry everything to God in prayer. 00:19:35.17\00:19:39.35 What a friend we have in Jesus 00:19:43.44\00:19:50.19 All our sins and griefs to bear 00:19:53.18\00:19:58.80 What a privilege to carry 00:20:02.56\00:20:08.86 Everything to God in prayer 00:20:11.52\00:20:19.40 O what peace we often forfeit 00:20:21.55\00:20:29.51 And O what needless pains we bear 00:20:29.52\00:20:37.35 It's all because we do not carry 00:20:40.43\00:20:48.39 Everything to God in prayer 00:20:50.80\00:20:57.65 Are we weak and heavy-laden 00:21:05.23\00:21:12.37 Are we cumbered with a load of care 00:21:14.31\00:21:21.61 Precious Savior still my refuge 00:21:24.40\00:21:31.37 Take it to the Lord in prayer 00:21:34.04\00:21:40.60 Do thy friends despise forsake thee 00:21:44.04\00:21:51.34 So take it to the Lord in prayer 00:21:52.53\00:21:59.06 In His arms He'll take and shield thee 00:22:03.12\00:22:11.12 Thou will find a solace there 00:22:16.91\00:22:24.17 Take it to the Lord in prayer 00:22:33.17\00:22:38.08
