Hello, and welcome again to Praise. 00:00:21.00\00:00:23.40 I am Kelly Mowrer. 00:00:23.43\00:00:25.40 In Psalms, David wrote, 00:00:25.43\00:00:27.46 "As the deer panteth for the water, 00:00:27.49\00:00:30.36 so my soul longeth after you. 00:00:30.39\00:00:34.60 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God. 00:00:34.63\00:00:38.66 Notice the strong intense words, David used there. 00:00:38.69\00:00:42.03 He didn't say, Oh from time to time 00:00:42.06\00:00:44.44 my mind turns to God. 00:00:44.47\00:00:46.33 He said I long for Him, I thirst for Him. 00:00:46.36\00:00:50.21 And during our time together today, 00:00:50.24\00:00:52.43 we are going to meditate on how we can know Him better. 00:00:52.46\00:00:56.46 How we can surrender more fully to Him? 00:00:56.49\00:01:00.11 How we can become more and more like Him? 00:01:00.14\00:01:03.54 Teach me, Father, 00:01:14.56\00:01:20.23 what to say 00:01:20.26\00:01:24.26 Teach me, Father, 00:01:24.29\00:01:29.90 how to pray 00:01:29.93\00:01:34.52 Teach me 00:01:34.55\00:01:37.43 along the way 00:01:37.46\00:01:44.59 How to be 00:01:44.62\00:01:48.83 like Jesus 00:01:48.86\00:01:55.69 Teach me 00:01:57.36\00:01:59.98 how we may be one 00:02:00.01\00:02:06.63 Like the Father 00:02:06.66\00:02:11.63 and the Son 00:02:11.66\00:02:15.93 I will always 00:02:15.96\00:02:21.08 overcome 00:02:21.11\00:02:25.70 I will be like 00:08:36.06\00:08:41.70 If You stilled the crowd 00:08:41.73\00:08:46.71 If Your light dispelled the gloom 00:08:46.74\00:08:51.53 If I saw Your wounds 00:08:51.56\00:08:56.71 Touched Your thorn pierced brow 00:08:56.74\00:09:03.28 I wonder 00:09:03.31\00:09:04.68 if I'd know You now 00:09:04.71\00:09:09.27 Would I know You now 00:09:12.25\00:09:16.63 If You walked into this place 00:09:35.01\00:09:41.41 I wonder 00:09:41.44\00:09:42.81 if I'd know You now 00:09:42.84\00:09:49.53 Have the images I painted so distorted who You are 00:09:49.56\00:09:57.00 That even if the world was looking 00:09:57.03\00:10:01.45 They could not see You, the real You 00:10:01.48\00:10:06.07 Have I changed the true reflection 00:10:06.10\00:10:10.19 To fulfill my own desire 00:10:10.22\00:10:14.08 Making You want, I want 00:10:14.11\00:10:17.14 Not showing You forth divine, 00:10:17.17\00:10:21.90 oh divine 00:10:21.93\00:10:29.75 Would I miss You now 00:10:29.78\00:10:36.03 If You left and closed the door 00:10:36.06\00:10:41.57 Would my flesh cry out 00:10:41.60\00:10:45.89 I don't need You anymore 00:10:45.92\00:10:50.37 Would I follow You 00:10:50.40\00:10:56.83 Could I be restored 00:10:56.86\00:11:01.67 Lord I wonder 00:11:01.70\00:11:06.44 Lord I wonder if I ever learn 00:11:06.47\00:11:12.76 I wonder if I'd know 00:11:12.79\00:11:16.40 You now 00:11:16.43\00:11:24.31 Sarah Flower Adams always wanted to be an actress. 00:11:42.98\00:11:46.99 But God had other plans for her. 00:11:47.02\00:11:49.58 Although she did get to play in Macbeth, 00:11:49.61\00:11:51.94 her career on the stage was cut short, 00:11:51.97\00:11:54.47 because of poor health. 00:11:54.50\00:11:56.40 And so she turned to writing. 00:11:56.43\00:11:58.84 Years later, passengers on board 00:11:58.87\00:12:01.45 the RMS Titanic, reported that as the ship sank 00:12:01.48\00:12:05.48 one of Sarah's best known hymns was played by the band. 00:12:05.51\00:12:09.22 Wallace Hartley, the ship's bandleader, 00:12:09.25\00:12:11.60 who like all the rest of the musicians 00:12:11.63\00:12:13.48 went down with the Titanic. 00:12:13.51\00:12:15.47 Had previously said that he wanted 00:12:15.50\00:12:16.96 that song played at his funeral. 00:12:16.99\00:12:19.75 And in 1901 as United States President 00:12:19.78\00:12:23.12 William Mckinley lay dying. 00:12:23.15\00:12:26.01 His last whispered words 00:12:26.04\00:12:28.11 with the first few lines of Sarah's hymn. 00:12:28.14\00:12:31.39 Nearer, my God to thee Nearer to thee 00:12:31.42\00:12:35.48 Even though it be a cross That raiseth me 00:12:35.51\00:12:39.05 Still all my prayer shall be 00:12:39.08\00:12:42.05 Nearer, my God, to thee Nearer to thee 00:12:42.08\00:12:46.02 O God, 00:17:22.48\00:17:25.37 Father of heaven and earth 00:17:25.40\00:17:33.36 I call to You like deep calls 00:17:33.39\00:17:39.21 to deep over water 00:17:39.24\00:17:47.12 Show me 00:17:47.15\00:17:50.18 Your endless measure of grace 00:17:50.21\00:17:58.09 Let tender mercies shine once again 00:17:58.12\00:18:05.12 From Your holy face 00:18:05.15\00:18:11.97 Deep in my heart there's a longing 00:18:12.00\00:18:18.03 To please the One 00:18:18.06\00:18:20.74 who has saved me 00:18:20.77\00:18:27.68 O God, 00:18:27.71\00:18:30.64 though I have wandered so far 00:18:30.67\00:18:38.64 You know that I'm still 00:18:38.67\00:18:42.78 A woman after Your own heart 00:18:42.81\00:18:50.78 I am driven 00:18:58.71\00:19:02.80 by rivers of pride 00:19:02.83\00:19:09.24 You are my rescue 00:19:09.27\00:19:13.85 The Maker and Keeper 00:19:13.88\00:19:16.86 of my life 00:19:16.89\00:19:23.36 Lead me 00:19:23.39\00:19:26.37 by the still waters again 00:19:26.40\00:19:34.34 Use me in spite of the prodigal child 00:19:34.37\00:19:41.36 That You know I am 00:19:41.39\00:19:48.07 Just as a deer runs to water 00:19:48.10\00:19:54.28 So does my soul 00:19:54.31\00:19:56.85 to You, Father 00:19:56.88\00:20:03.72 O God, 00:20:03.75\00:20:06.85 though I have wandered so far 00:20:06.88\00:20:14.51 You know that I'm still 00:20:14.54\00:20:19.11 A woman after Your own heart 00:20:19.14\00:20:27.04 Just as a deer runs to water 00:20:54.96\00:21:00.99 So does my soul 00:21:01.02\00:21:03.57 to You, Father 00:21:03.60\00:21:10.13 O God, 00:21:12.78\00:21:16.51 though I have wandered so far 00:21:16.54\00:21:24.31 You know that I'm still 00:21:24.34\00:21:28.99 A woman after Your own heart 00:21:29.02\00:21:36.98 I'm still 00:21:41.78\00:21:45.56 a woman after Your own heart 00:21:45.59\00:21:52.71 Mrs. Elizabeth Payson Prentiss, born in Portland, Maine, 00:22:17.66\00:22:21.32 in 1818, was known throughout her life 00:22:21.35\00:22:24.87 as a woman after God's heart. 00:22:24.90\00:22:27.19 She lived very closed to the Savior she loved. 00:22:27.22\00:22:30.30 Those who knew her best described her as 00:22:30.33\00:22:32.28 a bright-eyed little woman, with a keen sense of humor, 00:22:32.31\00:22:35.82 who cared more to shine in her own happy household 00:22:35.85\00:22:39.09 than in a wide circle of society. 00:22:39.12\00:22:41.86 Although Elizabeth was strong in spirit, 00:22:41.89\00:22:43.84 she was very frail in her body. 00:22:43.87\00:22:45.96 Throughout her life she was a near invalid, 00:22:45.99\00:22:48.59 hardly living even a moment free of pain. 00:22:48.62\00:22:52.08 She once wrote these words: 00:22:52.11\00:22:54.46 "I see now that to live for God, 00:22:54.49\00:22:57.43 whether one is allowed ability to be actively useful or not, 00:22:57.46\00:23:01.54 is a great thing, and that it is a wonderful mercy 00:23:01.57\00:23:05.33 to be allowed even to suffer, if thereby one can glorify Him." 00:23:05.36\00:23:11.26 On another occasion she wrote: 00:23:11.29\00:23:13.28 "To love Christ more is the deepest need, 00:23:13.31\00:23:17.15 the constant cry of my soul. 00:23:17.18\00:23:19.54 Out in the woods, and on my bed, 00:23:19.57\00:23:22.06 out driving, when I am happy and busy, 00:23:22.09\00:23:25.17 when I am sad and idle, the whisper keeps going up 00:23:25.20\00:23:29.19 for more love, more love, more love." 00:23:29.22\00:23:33.79 During the 1850's, while ministering to a church 00:23:33.82\00:23:36.90 in New York city the Prentiss' lost a child, 00:23:36.93\00:23:40.09 a short time later their youngest child also died. 00:23:40.12\00:23:44.14 For weeks, Elizabeth mourned so deeply 00:23:44.17\00:23:46.24 nothing could comfort her. 00:23:46.27\00:23:48.10 In her diary she wrote, "Empty hands, a worn-out, 00:23:48.13\00:23:51.89 exhausted body, and unutterable longings 00:23:51.92\00:23:55.70 to flee from a world that has so many sharp experiences." 00:23:55.73\00:24:01.25 From her broken heart came this touching poem. 00:24:01.28\00:24:04.81 "I thought that prattling boys and girls 00:24:04.84\00:24:07.29 Would fill this empty room 00:24:07.32\00:24:09.59 That my rich heart would gather flowers 00:24:09.62\00:24:11.77 From childhood's opening bloom 00:24:11.80\00:24:14.65 But one child and two green graves are mine 00:24:14.68\00:24:18.88 This is God's gift to me 00:24:18.91\00:24:21.50 A bleeding, fainting, broken heart 00:24:21.53\00:24:24.78 This is my gift to Thee." 00:24:24.81\00:24:27.82 During this period of unimaginable grief, 00:24:27.85\00:24:30.91 Mrs. Prentiss began meditating upon the story of Jacob. 00:24:30.94\00:24:34.88 How God met him in a very special way 00:24:34.91\00:24:37.30 during his moments of deepest sorrow and need. 00:24:37.33\00:24:41.08 One evening she sat down alone and wrote a song 00:24:41.11\00:24:44.30 that she didn't show to anyone, 00:24:44.33\00:24:45.91 not even her husband for the next 13 years. 00:24:45.94\00:24:50.27 More love to thee, O Christ, more love to thee 00:24:50.30\00:24:54.80 Hear thou the prayer I make on bended knee 00:24:54.83\00:24:58.97 This is my earnest plea More love, O Christ, to thee 00:24:59.00\00:25:04.64 More love to thee, more love to thee 00:25:04.67\00:25:08.63 More love to thee, O Christ, 00:25:19.37\00:25:24.82 more love to thee 00:25:24.85\00:25:30.77 Hear thou the prayer 00:25:30.80\00:25:35.18 I make on bended knee 00:25:35.21\00:25:42.85 This is my earnest plea 00:25:42.88\00:25:48.75 More love, O Christ, to thee 00:25:48.78\00:25:54.75 More love to thee, 00:25:54.78\00:26:00.70 more love to thee 00:26:00.73\00:26:06.71 Then shall my latest breath 00:26:18.81\00:26:24.91 whisper thy praise 00:26:24.94\00:26:30.86 This be the parting cry 00:26:30.89\00:26:36.76 my heart shall raise 00:26:36.79\00:26:42.85 This is my earnest plea 00:26:42.88\00:26:48.85 More love, O Christ, to thee 00:26:48.88\00:26:54.82 More love to thee, 00:26:54.85\00:27:00.87 more love to thee 00:27:00.90\00:27:06.84 This still its prayer shall be 00:27:12.84\00:27:18.81 More love, O Christ to thee 00:27:18.84\00:27:24.90 More love to thee, 00:27:24.93\00:27:30.74 more love to thee 00:27:30.77\00:27:36.88 More love to thee, 00:27:36.91\00:27:42.84 more love to thee 00:27:42.87\00:27:50.82
