Hi, and welcome to Praise. I'm Kelly Mowrer. 00:00:18.97\00:00:23.14 It is so easy for us when we think of the ways 00:00:23.15\00:00:26.27 that God has blessed us to praise His name. 00:00:26.28\00:00:30.24 But for thousands of years men and women of God 00:00:30.25\00:00:33.41 have wrestled with questions 00:00:33.42\00:00:35.26 about the trials and the sorrows that we face 00:00:35.27\00:00:38.25 living in this sinful would. 00:00:38.26\00:00:40.83 Why do bad things happen to God's children? 00:00:40.84\00:00:43.83 Where is God, when a drunk driver 00:00:43.84\00:00:46.05 hits a family in their car coming home from church 00:00:46.06\00:00:48.90 and kills their mom? 00:00:48.91\00:00:50.68 And why does a man who's never smoked 00:00:50.69\00:00:52.99 and has lived his life following God's laws of health. 00:00:53.00\00:00:55.94 Why does he die of cancer? 00:00:55.95\00:00:58.08 What about all those promises for safety and protection 00:00:58.09\00:01:01.46 and goodness and mercy following us 00:01:01.47\00:01:03.86 all the days of our loves? 00:01:03.87\00:01:06.47 Where is God when his children 00:01:06.48\00:01:08.61 are walking through the valley of shadow 00:01:08.62\00:01:11.04 and they feel totally abandoned 00:01:11.05\00:01:13.12 and cut off from the sense of his presence? 00:01:13.13\00:01:16.61 I don't think they will understand, 00:01:16.62\00:01:18.54 even begin to understand, 00:01:18.55\00:01:20.14 answers to some of these questions 00:01:20.15\00:01:21.69 until we get to heaven. 00:01:21.70\00:01:23.43 But today I want us to spend some time 00:01:23.44\00:01:25.78 looking at some of the things 00:01:25.79\00:01:27.09 the Bible says about suffering and trials. 00:01:27.10\00:01:30.60 And by faith we can be comforted by these truths. 00:01:30.61\00:01:34.75 The first thing is that when we go through the valleys 00:01:34.76\00:01:37.78 we are not alone. 00:01:37.79\00:01:39.94 In spite of how we may feel we can, by faith, 00:01:39.95\00:01:43.14 know that God is with us. 00:01:43.15\00:01:45.90 He understands and he will carry us through. 00:01:45.91\00:01:48.88 The Bible says he was a man of sorrows 00:01:48.89\00:01:51.48 and acquainted with grief. 00:01:51.49\00:01:53.69 And Jesus himself said, "I will come to you. 00:01:53.70\00:01:57.42 I will not leave you comfortless." 00:01:57.43\00:02:00.65 Oft times you wonder why tears come into your eyes 00:02:09.83\00:02:21.04 And burdens seem to be much more than you can stand 00:02:21.05\00:02:31.69 But God is standing near He sees each falling tear 00:02:31.70\00:02:42.52 Tears are a language God understands 00:02:42.53\00:02:53.35 God sees the tears of a brokenhearted soul 00:02:53.36\00:03:04.21 He sees your tears and He hears them when they fall 00:03:04.22\00:03:15.19 God weeps along with man and He takes him by the hand 00:03:15.20\00:03:26.13 Tears are a language God understands 00:03:26.14\00:03:37.36 When grief has left you low it causes tears to flow 00:03:37.37\00:03:48.22 And things have not turned out the way that you had planned 00:03:48.23\00:03:59.13 But God won't forget you, His promises are true 00:03:59.14\00:04:09.78 Tears are a language God understands 00:04:09.79\00:04:20.67 God sees the tears of a brokenhearted soul 00:04:20.68\00:04:31.42 He sees your tears and He hears them when they fall 00:04:31.43\00:04:42.52 God weeps along with man and He takes him by the hand 00:04:42.53\00:04:53.35 Tears are a language God understands 00:04:53.36\00:05:04.24 God weeps along with man and He takes him by the hand 00:05:04.25\00:05:15.24 Tears are a language 00:05:15.25\00:05:20.02 God understands He understands 00:05:20.03\00:05:36.93 Another thing that the Bible tells us 00:05:41.12\00:05:43.62 is that how we handle suffering 00:05:43.63\00:05:46.87 can actually bring glory to God 00:05:46.88\00:05:49.00 as well as being a comfort to others. 00:05:49.01\00:05:51.12 Over a hundred years ago a beautiful song was written 00:05:51.13\00:05:54.69 that has brought immeasurable comfort 00:05:54.70\00:05:56.37 to God's people around the world. 00:05:56.38\00:05:58.65 The author of that song was Civilla Martin 00:05:58.66\00:06:01.12 and she wrote an account of how it happened. 00:06:01.13\00:06:04.17 Early in the spring of 1905, 00:06:04.18\00:06:06.30 she said, "My husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York 00:06:06.31\00:06:10.25 and we developed this deep friendship 00:06:10.26\00:06:12.56 for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle, 00:06:12.57\00:06:15.51 true saints of God. 00:06:15.52\00:06:17.86 Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nearly 20 years. 00:06:17.87\00:06:22.81 Her husband was an incurable cripple 00:06:22.82\00:06:25.19 who had to propel himself 00:06:25.20\00:06:26.75 to and from his business in a wheel chair. 00:06:26.76\00:06:29.77 But despite their afflictions, 00:06:29.78\00:06:31.66 they lived happy Christian lives, 00:06:31.67\00:06:34.05 bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. 00:06:34.06\00:06:38.43 One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles, 00:06:38.44\00:06:41.00 my husband commented on their bright hopefulness 00:06:41.01\00:06:44.19 and asked them for the secret of it. 00:06:44.20\00:06:47.33 Mrs. Doolittle's reply was simple, 00:06:47.34\00:06:50.30 "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." 00:06:50.31\00:06:54.57 Why should I feel discouraged why should the shadows come 00:07:01.41\00:07:14.26 Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home 00:07:14.27\00:07:26.14 When Jesus is my portion My constant friend is He 00:07:26.15\00:07:38.41 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 00:07:38.42\00:07:50.92 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 00:07:50.93\00:08:05.84 I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free 00:08:05.85\00:08:16.16 For His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me 00:08:16.17\00:08:31.60 Let not your heart be troubled His tender word I hear 00:08:31.61\00:08:44.73 And resting on His goodness I lose my doubts and fears 00:08:44.74\00:08:56.76 Though by the path He leadeth but one step I may see 00:08:56.77\00:09:08.93 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 00:09:08.94\00:09:21.26 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 00:09:21.27\00:09:36.30 Whenever I am tempted whenever clouds arise 00:09:39.67\00:09:52.85 When songs give place to sighing when hope within me dies 00:09:52.86\00:10:05.11 I draw the closer to Him from care He sets me free 00:10:05.12\00:10:17.62 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 00:10:17.63\00:10:30.80 His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me 00:10:30.81\00:10:46.47 I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free 00:10:46.48\00:10:57.59 For His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me 00:10:57.60\00:11:14.47 Yes I know He watches me 00:11:14.48\00:11:27.96 High upon the mountain the sun is shining bright 00:11:45.91\00:11:53.99 My heart is filled with gladness here above the cares of life 00:11:54.00\00:12:02.34 But I've just come through the valley 00:12:02.35\00:12:06.43 of trouble fear and pain 00:12:06.44\00:12:10.57 It was there I came to know my God 00:12:10.58\00:12:15.36 Enough to stand and say 00:12:15.37\00:12:21.32 Even in the valley God is good 00:12:21.33\00:12:29.54 Even in the valley He is faithful and true 00:12:29.55\00:12:37.58 He carries his children through Like He said He would 00:12:37.59\00:12:46.05 Even in the valley God is good 00:12:46.06\00:12:56.13 This road of life has lead you to a valley of defeat 00:13:02.04\00:13:10.62 You wonder if the father has heard your desperate plea 00:13:10.63\00:13:18.60 There is hope in that rugged place 00:13:18.61\00:13:23.08 where tears of sorrow dwell 00:13:23.09\00:13:26.83 Cant you hear him gently whispering 00:13:26.84\00:13:31.25 I'm here and all is well 00:13:31.26\00:13:37.83 Even in the valley God is good 00:13:37.84\00:13:46.05 Even in the valley He is faithful and true 00:13:46.06\00:13:54.05 He carries His children through Like He said he would 00:13:54.06\00:14:02.56 Even in the valley God is good 00:14:02.57\00:14:16.19 God is good 00:14:16.20\00:14:23.48 Harry Thacker Burleigh was born in 1866. 00:14:27.20\00:14:31.45 His grandfather Hamilton Waters had been a slave. 00:14:31.46\00:14:35.02 Who'd been beaten so savagely 00:14:35.03\00:14:36.72 that he became blind as a result. 00:14:36.73\00:14:39.47 But he passed along the beautiful old songs 00:14:39.48\00:14:42.01 by singing them to his grandson Harry. 00:14:42.02\00:14:44.99 Harry was a baritone soloist who received a scholarship 00:14:45.00\00:14:48.86 from the National Conservatory of Music 00:14:48.87\00:14:51.73 and was hired by a very elite and wealthy church 00:14:51.74\00:14:55.81 in New York City 00:14:55.82\00:14:57.21 as their principal soloist for many years. 00:14:57.22\00:15:00.04 In those days the whites and the blacks 00:15:00.05\00:15:02.43 didn't worship together. 00:15:02.44\00:15:04.80 But the person who cast the deciding vote 00:15:04.81\00:15:07.79 to hire Harry was none other than 00:15:07.80\00:15:10.06 the famous financier J.P. Morgan. 00:15:10.07\00:15:13.41 Burleigh became nationally and internationally known 00:15:13.42\00:15:16.54 for his Negro spirituals. 00:15:16.55\00:15:18.48 He performed for both the King of England 00:15:18.49\00:15:20.86 and President Theodore Roosevelt. 00:15:20.87\00:15:23.45 He wrote through all these songs, 00:15:23.46\00:15:25.76 there breathes a hope, 00:15:25.77\00:15:27.51 a faith in the ultimate justice and brotherhood of man. 00:15:27.52\00:15:31.45 The cadences of sorrow invariably turned to joy 00:15:31.46\00:15:34.62 and the message is ever manifest that eventually deliverance 00:15:34.63\00:15:38.59 from all that hinders and oppresses the soul will come. 00:15:38.60\00:15:42.59 And man, every man will be free. 00:15:42.60\00:15:46.83 Listen now as the Colburns play one of Harry Burleigh's 00:15:46.84\00:15:50.54 best known spirituals, 00:15:50.55\00:15:53.09 "Deep River, my home is over Jordan." 00:15:53.10\00:15:57.11 When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, 00:19:13.20\00:19:26.38 When sorrows like sea billows roll 00:19:26.39\00:19:38.04 Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say 00:19:38.05\00:19:50.21 It is well, it is well with my soul 00:19:50.22\00:20:03.57 It is well with my soul 00:20:03.58\00:20:16.56 It is well, it is well with my soul 00:20:16.57\00:20:30.90 And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight 00:20:30.91\00:20:42.79 The clouds be rolled back as a scroll 00:20:42.80\00:20:53.26 The trump shall resound and my Lord shall descend 00:20:53.27\00:21:04.76 Even so it is well with my soul 00:21:04.77\00:21:18.04 It is well with my soul 00:21:18.05\00:21:30.01 It is well, it is well with my soul 00:21:30.02\00:21:42.29 It is well with my soul 00:21:42.30\00:21:54.62 It is well, it is well with my soul 00:21:54.63\00:22:18.03 Jesus told us that while we are in this world 00:22:22.21\00:22:25.37 we will have troubles. 00:22:25.38\00:22:27.30 But He said, "be of good cheer, I have overcome this world." 00:22:27.31\00:22:32.13 Whether we're listing to Diane 00:22:32.14\00:22:33.98 and singing in our hearts with her, 00:22:33.99\00:22:35.83 "It is well with my soul," or whether we're saying with Job, 00:22:35.84\00:22:39.86 "I don't understand why these things are happening 00:22:39.87\00:22:43.18 but I do know that my redeemer lives. 00:22:43.19\00:22:45.67 And that he will stand on this earth in the latter day. 00:22:45.68\00:22:50.45 The Apostle John wrote it this way, 00:22:50.46\00:22:52.74 "I heard a great voice out of Heaven saying, 00:22:52.75\00:22:55.55 'behold the tabernacle of God is with men 00:22:55.56\00:22:58.71 and He will dwell with them and they shall be His people 00:22:58.72\00:23:02.27 and God himself shall be with them 00:23:02.28\00:23:04.79 and be their God. 00:23:04.80\00:23:07.00 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes 00:23:07.01\00:23:10.36 and there shall be no more death. 00:23:10.37\00:23:12.11 Neither sorrow nor crying, 00:23:12.12\00:23:14.74 neither shall there be anymore pain 00:23:14.75\00:23:17.26 for the former things are passed away." 00:23:17.27\00:23:20.52 The timeless theme Earth and Heaven will pass away 00:23:41.87\00:23:52.09 It's not a dream God will make all things new that day 00:23:52.10\00:24:02.71 Gone is the curse from which I stumbled and fell 00:24:02.72\00:24:12.47 Evil is banished to eternal hell 00:24:12.48\00:24:22.34 No more night No more pain 00:24:22.35\00:24:31.94 No more tears Never crying again 00:24:31.95\00:24:41.62 Praises to the great "I am " 00:24:41.63\00:24:50.48 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb 00:24:50.49\00:25:04.79 See all around now the nations bow down to sing 00:25:09.28\00:25:19.77 The only sound are the praises to Christ, our King 00:25:19.78\00:25:30.43 Slowly the names from the book are read 00:25:30.44\00:25:39.96 I know the King there's no need to dread 00:25:39.97\00:25:52.06 No more night No more pain 00:25:52.07\00:26:02.03 No more tears Never crying again 00:26:02.04\00:26:11.63 Praises to the great "I am " 00:26:11.64\00:26:20.69 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb 00:26:20.70\00:26:32.11 Look over there, it's a mansion prepared just for me 00:26:32.12\00:26:42.54 Where I can live with my savior eternally 00:26:42.55\00:26:55.26 No more night No more pain 00:26:55.27\00:27:06.09 No more tears Never crying again 00:27:06.10\00:27:15.49 Praises to the great "I am " 00:27:15.50\00:27:23.63 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb 00:27:23.64\00:27:33.45 We will live in the light of the risen Lamb 00:27:33.46\00:27:55.28
