It's an interesting place.

city that Paul had to write

The erroneous doctrine

of men, but as the word of God.

that we can read the Bible

that what Paul did was

So he wasn't just saying,

we give them the word,

they accept it

He makes an endorsement
that it is the word of God."

And, yes, they
did a right thing.

You notice that
endorsement there?

He says that it is--in
other words he was saying,

"It actually is the
word of God." Word of God.

Now one of the things that
is very important in this verse.

He not only says, "It's
actually the word of God,"

who believe the word of God."

There're a lot of individuals,
you know, you go to hotels

and you find in
the drawer there,

the Gideons have left a Bible.

And people today have no doubt
that the word of God exists,

but the belief
in the word of God

is where the change
begins to come into play.

Having the word of God,
carrying the word of God,

acknowledging the word
of God is not sufficient,

but believing because it says,
"It effectively works in you

if you believe it
for those who believe."

So they were at
the beginning stage

where Paul understood
there was another stage.

They accepted
that. It is God's word,

but now are you
gonna believe it?

That's a next stage.

This goes way
back to Jesus Himself.

is the story of this woman

who was baptized and she
went to her pastor and says,

"I'd like to be re-baptized."
And when she was asked why.

She says, "Because I
didn't confess some things.

There're some sins I committed

that I didn't
tell my pastor about."

Well, is she right about
that that she needed rebaptism

or I heard your--your
murmurings and you're correct.

No, because
confession for baptism is not

what we do to men is
what we do to God. Right.

And we have to learn to accept
the scripture as John says.

I had this experience where
this lady called and said to me

she felt that God
had not forgiven her
00:47:38.10\00:47:40.44
of something she had done.
00:47:40.47\00:47:42.91
So I asked her if
she had prayed about it.

She said, "Yes."
Well, but she says,
00:47:44.79\00:47:47.33
"I still felt like
God hasn't forgiven me."
00:47:47.36\00:47:49.52
So I said, "Go get your Bible."
00:47:49.55\00:47:51.21
She did. I asked her
to turn to First John 1:9
00:47:51.24\00:47:56.10
and read it for me. She read it.
00:47:56.13\00:47:57.55
"If we confess our sins, He is
faithful and just to forgive us
00:47:57.58\00:48:01.94
and to cleanse us
from all unrighteousness."

Did you confess?
Yes. Well, stop worrying.

The next part is God's
part. Allow God to do His part.

we have to believe
in the word of God.

You can't just read

story you mentioned is that

word of God is important.

had a confrontation

When He came to His own
people after thousands of years,

they were people--they
were students of the scripture.

And in fact, John 5:39.

He says, "You
search the scriptures,

for in them you think
you have eternal life,

but they are they
which testify of me."

The thing that we have to
be very careful of is that

we not allow our study of
the word to be sufficient.

Our study of the
word is the beginning,
00:48:58.12\00:48:59.56
but our
acceptance of Christ because
00:48:59.59\00:49:01.30
Jesus was standing right
there and He was speaking
00:49:01.33\00:49:03.66
to those who were
students of the scriptures.
00:49:03.69\00:49:05.66
He says, "You search them,
00:49:05.69\00:49:07.28
for in them you think
you have eternal life."

They are those of us
who look to the Bible

and we have to
maintain the reality

that the Bible is not
where our eternal life is.

Our eternal life is in Christ.

The Bible
introduces us to Christ.

So being
students of the scripture

was also a
beginning point as Jesus stood

amongst those who
knew the scriptures,

but rejected Him. Amen.

because the study of the word

should lead to a
relationship with Christ,

and that is where the
thing is. That's right.

And they were
studying the scripture,

but for the wrong
reason, the wrong motive.

So it was not even injunction

to study the
scripture that takes.

It was an indictment
for what they were doing.

Going to the scripture,
thinking it has eternal life

when eternal life is

one of the challenges that

I see the
scripture how they received

the word because
they had heard it.

If you go back into Acts
17, when we first hear about

the Thessalonians and
we hear about the Bereans.
00:50:06.85\00:50:10.07
Paul commended
the Bereans because
00:50:10.10\00:50:11.85
they not only heard the word
and accepted it with gladness,
00:50:11.88\00:50:14.52
but they went home daily
and studied the word to see
00:50:14.55\00:50:17.78
if what Paul
was saying was true.
00:50:17.81\00:50:20.27
This says something
about the Berean character,
00:50:20.30\00:50:22.06
but it also says something about
the Thessalonians' character.
00:50:22.09\00:50:24.66
And so they had
received the word.
00:50:24.69\00:50:26.60
I wonder how much
they had studied the word.
00:50:26.63\00:50:29.23
Some of the beliefs
that they came up with,

Paul had to correct.
You don't see Paul writing

to the
Thessalonians-- to the Bereans,

but you see that he had to
write to the Thessalonians.

That's a
powerful point you make.

In other words, we
shouldn't just receive the word,

we should study. When
someone comes to study
00:50:44.82\00:50:47.92
the word of God with you,

you should take time
yourself to search the scripture

to make sure that those things
are true. Right. Powerful.

Now we have to preach the gospel

and we have to
preach it as Jesus says,

"Go ye into all the world."

But is there a price
in preaching the gospel?

Is there a price
that preachers have to pay

in preaching this gospel?

Let me let you start first.

know, Paul and Silas,

we found them
paying a very heavy price.

And the way they did
it was very outstanding

they had been flogged

and their backs were, you know,
rolled with sauce and so on,

Not only that Jesus
told them long before

this as those who would be
recipients of the commission.

And if they do these

That's right. And so
the reality of the gospel,

reasons why the gospel

difficulty to the Philippians

as we find in the
lesson is hearing the gospel

is just one aspect of it.

There are those who hear
really wonderful sermons.

They would even
say to the preachers

that was a good message.

But if it effects no change
in their lives, it's a message.

It's like an arrow that
really found no target. Right.

As Pastor C.D. Brooks says,

butter, but hardens clay."

The condition of the heart

is the most important aspect
of the study of the word of God

because you can
hear a good message,

but if it doesn't
affect change. And as I said,

"What brought
controversy was that

the word preached
required an action."

When the word
of God goes forward

that requires an
action, not just an accolade

or just an
acceptance of that sounds good

or that's true,
but what do we do

as a result of what

And the Philippians
didn't want to make that change,

that's why it
brought controversy to them.

Paul got an invitation

Macedonia and help.

He went there and
the first great thing was

the conversion of
Lydia and her family.

I like how the
scripture puts it.

She and her entire household.

So that was a good
evangelism success. Yes.

And then he went now, he
was--this other woman now,

this demon possessed lady

that was crying out
following Paul around,

but she was saying
good things. Oh, yes.

But you can say good things
at inappropriate time. Right.

So he was
disturbing the meetings. Right.

And Paul rebuked
the spirit out of her

and that was a
loss of income. Right.

The folks didn't
take that too kindly now.

So the whipping
comes. That's right.

So my question to you is
when we go to preach the gospel,

should we preach it for
fear of what may happen to us

we relate knowing that

Paul was whipped
severely for doing that?

Well, we must remember that
we are soldiers of the Cross.

Now when a soldier is
detained to go to Iraq,

he knows he's in harm's way.

You know, he is there for
the glory of the United States.

And so are we, we are here

fighting in the
enemy's territory

knowing that we are
standing for Christ.

And so like
John says earlier on,

the servant is no
better than his master.

As they treated
Christ, they will treat us.

And all we have to
do is to follow that,

we are not in control

of what will happen to us,

comfort rather than in review,

that God is called. Right.

If a message doesn't
cause you to be uncomfortable,

it's not a message sent by God.

God doesn't call us to
preach comfortable message.

peace, but a sword." Sword.

stripes we have to be concerned
