My name is Pastor Justin Kim. 00:01:01.22\00:01:02.72 I'm the pastor of the Detroit Oakwood Adventist Church, 00:01:02.73\00:01:05.33 down by the airport. 00:01:05.34\00:01:06.82 And I am not married. I don't have kids. 00:01:06.83\00:01:11.01 That does not make me less of a man, 00:01:11.02\00:01:12.75 but I don't know of some things about masculinity 00:01:12.76\00:01:15.29 because I don't have an experience 00:01:15.30\00:01:16.53 that some of you do here. 00:01:16.54\00:01:18.22 But I'm a son and it's all like kind of, 00:01:18.23\00:01:20.87 kind of fulfill right now and the pastor. 00:01:20.88\00:01:23.51 So I figure we can go to scripture 00:01:23.52\00:01:25.41 and look at who are amongst of Bible characters 00:01:25.42\00:01:29.88 or is a good example of Biblical Masculinity. 00:01:29.89\00:01:35.47 When you think of father figures', 00:01:35.48\00:01:36.80 who is the greatest father of them all? 00:01:36.81\00:01:38.38 Obviously out of outside of God, 00:01:38.39\00:01:40.04 it is, Father Abraham had many sons, you know, Psalms. 00:01:40.05\00:01:44.54 So we're gonna through Abraham today and go through 00:01:44.55\00:01:46.93 and compare his character with the character of Lot. 00:01:46.94\00:01:50.35 Please open your Bibles 00:01:50.36\00:01:51.35 to Genesis Chapter 18 and Chapter 19. 00:01:51.36\00:01:54.90 And today, you wanna, you can take notes. 00:01:54.91\00:01:57.33 This is not a most of a sermon, but a Bible study. 00:01:57.34\00:02:01.32 And we're gonna be flipping back 00:02:01.33\00:02:02.92 and forward of 18 and 19. 00:02:02.93\00:02:06.09 Eighteen, nineteen back and forward. 00:02:06.10\00:02:08.80 Genesis 18 and 19. Before we read scripture 00:02:08.81\00:02:12.07 and go through the study, 00:02:12.08\00:02:13.39 I gonna ask you bow your heads 00:02:13.40\00:02:14.79 and ask for the Lord's blessing. 00:02:14.80\00:02:16.64 Father in heaven, 00:02:21.09\00:02:22.09 Your sons have come here to hear this morning. 00:02:22.10\00:02:26.21 Father help us to get beyond the formality of this event. 00:02:26.22\00:02:31.04 Father view the sincerity in our hearts or do we, 00:02:31.05\00:02:36.91 maybe be law before heaven 00:02:36.92\00:02:38.94 and we ask for the Holy Spirit. 00:02:38.95\00:02:42.23 You can bless these words to make them living 00:02:42.24\00:02:46.18 before our eyes and our hearts. 00:02:46.19\00:02:48.36 Father bless my lips, bless my brother's ears, 00:02:48.37\00:02:52.92 and that this word maybe living 00:02:52.93\00:02:55.39 in the lives of everyone here. 00:02:55.40\00:02:57.28 We pray this in Jesus name, amen. 00:02:57.29\00:03:01.96 Okay. Let's go to Genesis Chapter 18 and 19, 00:03:01.97\00:03:04.22 Genesis 18 and 19. 00:03:04.23\00:03:06.00 The second half of this Bible study 00:03:06.01\00:03:07.62 will be in the afternoon. 00:03:07.63\00:03:08.69 We'll be looking into entire Book of Genesis, 00:03:08.70\00:03:10.42 obviously the narrative of Abraham. 00:03:10.43\00:03:15.31 I actually lied. Let's go to Genesis 13 00:03:15.32\00:03:16.31 to start of with, Genesis 13. 00:03:16.32\00:03:19.73 And we see here the first interaction 00:03:19.74\00:03:21.14 between Abraham and Lot. 00:03:21.15\00:03:23.36 Many of you already know that Abraham 00:03:23.37\00:03:25.13 was the father of faith. 00:03:25.14\00:03:26.66 He is the father that has been called out of Babylon, 00:03:26.67\00:03:28.94 out of City of Ur, and he has a nephew named 'Lot'. 00:03:28.95\00:03:33.34 In Chapter 13, we see an interaction between them. 00:03:33.35\00:03:35.63 So we start from verse 5, verse 5. 00:03:35.64\00:03:39.31 "And Lot also, which went with Abram, 00:03:39.32\00:03:41.41 had flocks, and herds, and tents. 00:03:41.42\00:03:43.37 And the land was not able to bear them, 00:03:43.38\00:03:45.47 that they might dwell together, 00:03:45.48\00:03:46.57 for their substance was great, 00:03:46.58\00:03:47.79 so that they could not dwell together. 00:03:47.80\00:03:49.86 There was a strife between the herdsmen 00:03:49.87\00:03:51.06 of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle." 00:03:51.07\00:03:54.07 Verse 8, "And Abraham said unto Lot, 00:03:54.08\00:03:56.84 "Let there be no strife, I pray thee, 00:03:56.85\00:03:59.05 between me and thee, and between my herdsmen 00:03:59.06\00:04:01.46 and thy herdsmen, for we be brethren." 00:04:01.47\00:04:03.79 It's interesting. This is a middle-eastern culture. 00:04:03.80\00:04:07.28 And there is something there is some stalked differences 00:04:07.29\00:04:09.88 between the eastern side of the world 00:04:09.89\00:04:12.35 and the western side, different backgrounds. 00:04:12.36\00:04:15.48 And more so Abraham and Lot are more eastern 00:04:15.49\00:04:18.49 than western thinking. 00:04:18.50\00:04:19.94 And in the eastern way of thinking elders 00:04:19.95\00:04:22.17 have more of an authority more 00:04:22.18\00:04:24.06 of a say than younger ones do. 00:04:24.07\00:04:26.29 And in this culture, if two people are fighting 00:04:26.30\00:04:30.15 it's actually more gracious for the older person to come 00:04:30.16\00:04:33.41 and approach the younger one. 00:04:33.42\00:04:34.98 And what does he say in Verse 8? He says unto Lot, 00:04:34.99\00:04:38.16 " Let there be no strife, I pray thee, 00:04:38.17\00:04:40.04 between me and you, and between my herdsmen 00:04:40.05\00:04:42.30 and thy herdsmen; for we be," what? 00:04:42.31\00:04:45.36 Brethren! We are like-minded brothers. 00:04:45.37\00:04:48.29 We are also connected. 00:04:48.30\00:04:49.27 We are kinsmen. We are relatives. 00:04:49.28\00:04:51.86 That's interesting. It keeps on going. 00:04:51.87\00:04:53.18 So Verse 9, "Is not the whole land before thee? 00:04:53.19\00:04:57.08 Separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: 00:04:57.09\00:05:00.44 if thou wilt take the left hand 00:05:00.45\00:05:01.89 then I will go to the right. 00:05:01.92\00:05:03.48 And if thou will go to the right hand 00:05:03.49\00:05:05.26 then I will go to left." 00:05:05.27\00:05:06.24 This is very gracious of Abraham to do this. 00:05:06.25\00:05:10.85 You ever have, I don't know, 00:05:10.86\00:05:12.30 I am South Korean by descent, American born. 00:05:12.31\00:05:16.46 And it's interesting that when I go out to eat 00:05:16.47\00:05:19.17 with my Korean friends, you finish all eating 00:05:19.18\00:05:22.59 and say hey I will pay you guys. 00:05:22.60\00:05:25.82 And then what happens in eastern cultures 00:05:25.83\00:05:27.63 are like, well no. I will pay. No I will pay. 00:05:27.64\00:05:29.85 And you fight. You do this little dance. 00:05:29.86\00:05:32.03 I will pay and I will pay and finally you said okay 00:05:32.04\00:05:34.19 well you get this time and I will get next time 00:05:34.20\00:05:36.03 and you do get out. Yeah. 00:05:36.04\00:05:38.25 Now once I went eat, eat out with my American friends 00:05:38.26\00:05:41.60 and so I thought this is the same culture 00:05:41.61\00:05:42.94 and I go out there is about four or five people 00:05:42.95\00:05:44.85 there in expensive restaurant. 00:05:44.86\00:05:46.09 Hey guys well this one is on me. 00:05:46.10\00:05:48.58 He is expecting a little tug and an interplay there. 00:05:48.59\00:05:53.95 So hey guys I will take this. It's on me. 00:05:53.96\00:05:56.55 And a pause waiting for the response. 00:05:56.56\00:06:00.57 Hey thanks Justin. Yeah we appreciate. 00:06:00.58\00:06:02.38 You are a good guy Justin. 00:06:02.39\00:06:04.91 And here I am stuck with this bill. 00:06:04.92\00:06:10.69 Now here you see. Here Abraham is the older one 00:06:10.70\00:06:13.82 and he is the uncle, 00:06:13.83\00:06:14.92 and he says alright we can't get along. 00:06:14.93\00:06:16.87 And your people and our people have this problem 00:06:16.88\00:06:19.28 and he takes the first gracious, 00:06:19.29\00:06:21.00 hey you know what? I'll let you choose. 00:06:21.01\00:06:24.04 Why don't you go ahead? Whatever you choose 00:06:24.05\00:06:26.22 I will take the other. It was gracious of Abraham. 00:06:26.23\00:06:29.06 Now he was the older relative. 00:06:29.07\00:06:30.99 He could have said, okay Lot come over here. 00:06:31.00\00:06:33.17 I am gonna take this and you take this 00:06:33.18\00:06:35.37 and we wanna call it. 00:06:35.38\00:06:36.35 He could have played in authority. 00:06:36.36\00:06:38.55 Does he do that? No, he is gracious. 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.49 Now what would have been culturally responsible 00:06:41.50\00:06:44.46 for Lot would have been, well uncle Abraham. 00:06:44.47\00:06:47.53 I appreciate your graciousness but no, no, 00:06:47.54\00:06:49.12 because you are older. 00:06:49.13\00:06:50.80 What? You go ahead and take the first choice. 00:06:50.81\00:06:55.21 And what does Lot do? Very interesting. 00:06:55.22\00:06:57.92 Lot verse 10. Lot lifted up his, what? His eyes. 00:06:57.93\00:07:05.67 It's interesting. Men are visually oriented. 00:07:05.68\00:07:09.48 We are these hunters long this scenery. 00:07:09.49\00:07:12.50 You just imagine on a mount top somewhere 00:07:12.51\00:07:14.86 and there is all that land and he is looking, 00:07:14.87\00:07:16.75 and he is looking and looking. 00:07:16.76\00:07:17.89 Verse 10, "Lot lifted up his eyes 00:07:17.90\00:07:20.47 and beheld all the plain of Jordan 00:07:20.48\00:07:23.65 that it was well watered." Where? 00:07:23.66\00:07:26.08 Just one spot? No. Everywhere. 00:07:26.09\00:07:31.31 Now for us in the modern context, 00:07:31.32\00:07:33.04 living in North America water being everywhere 00:07:33.05\00:07:35.04 is quiet annoying. You know, 00:07:35.05\00:07:36.37 Michigan floods all time, water everywhere, 00:07:36.38\00:07:38.52 and floods the basement. But for a herdsman, 00:07:38.53\00:07:41.23 for a shepherd water everywhere means what? 00:07:41.24\00:07:44.25 It's a convenience. You don't have to walk as 00:07:44.26\00:07:45.99 and all your, your, animals and livestock 00:07:46.00\00:07:51.45 they are all just watered and it's all hunky-dory. 00:07:51.46\00:07:53.78 So verse 10, that it was well watered everywhere before, 00:07:53.79\00:07:57.89 and this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah 00:07:57.90\00:08:00.79 and it was as the, what? The garden of the LORD, 00:08:00.80\00:08:06.91 meaning the 'Garden Of Eden' in Chapter 1. 00:08:06.92\00:08:11.00 So he sees this place. It's like a tropical. 00:08:11.01\00:08:14.81 I don't know what it look like, but it's awesome, 00:08:14.82\00:08:16.92 fertile, just rich land. 00:08:16.93\00:08:20.91 And he says in Verse 10, Verse 11, 00:08:20.92\00:08:24.14 "Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan 00:08:24.15\00:08:27.39 and Lot journeyed east. They separate themselves, 00:08:27.40\00:08:29.73 the one from the other." 00:08:29.74\00:08:31.13 So here's the inter dialog. 00:08:31.14\00:08:33.05 Abraham is like my gracious Nephew 00:08:33.06\00:08:35.44 why don't you have first choice. 00:08:35.45\00:08:37.09 Wherever you take I will take the other, 00:08:37.10\00:08:38.67 and he is taking a humbler position and he is waiting 00:08:38.68\00:08:40.95 for the response to come back. 00:08:40.96\00:08:42.87 And Lot gets on top of the rock and he is looking 00:08:42.88\00:08:45.77 he is like yep, I'll take that one. 00:08:45.78\00:08:47.20 See you later uncle and he bust out of there. 00:08:47.21\00:08:51.15 Okay. Now we see later on what's happening here. 00:08:51.16\00:08:52.67 The character of Lot emerges. Verse 12, 00:08:52.68\00:08:56.59 "Abraham dwelt in the land of Canaan, 00:08:56.60\00:08:59.48 and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain 00:08:59.49\00:09:02.29 and pitched his tent towards Sodom." 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.98 We will get back to that a little bit later. 00:09:04.99\00:09:07.49 Go to Genesis 14, go to Genesis 14, 00:09:07.50\00:09:11.98 Genesis 14 verse 14. 00:09:11.99\00:09:15.64 We will start from verse 13. 00:09:15.65\00:09:17.30 The Bible reads, this is the account 00:09:17.31\00:09:20.97 of a old war happening. Verse 13, 00:09:20.98\00:09:24.29 "there came one that had escaped, 00:09:24.30\00:09:25.96 and told Abraham the Hebrew; 00:09:25.97\00:09:28.00 for he dwelled in the plain of Mamre, 00:09:28.01\00:09:30.04 the Amorite, the brother of Eshcol, 00:09:30.05\00:09:31.80 the brother of Aner, 00:09:31.81\00:09:33.26 and these were confederate with Abram. 00:09:33.27\00:09:36.07 And when Abram heard that his brother 00:09:36.08\00:09:37.44 was taken captive, 00:09:37.45\00:09:38.83 he armed his trained servants, 00:09:38.84\00:09:40.79 born in his own house, 318 and pursued them unto Dan." 00:09:40.80\00:09:46.81 Now this is the character of Abraham. 00:09:46.82\00:09:49.01 In Chapter 13 we see the character of Lot. 00:09:49.02\00:09:51.03 Lot is the little guy and he is like, 00:09:51.04\00:09:52.51 yep I will take it and he is out of there. 00:09:52.52\00:09:54.64 Okay. Now Abraham is a bit different. 00:09:54.65\00:09:56.57 Abraham verse 13, 00:09:56.58\00:09:57.98 He hears that his nephew has been taken away. 00:09:57.99\00:10:03.27 And as a good father, good man of God that he is, 00:10:03.28\00:10:07.46 verse 13, He is hanging out with three brothers. 00:10:07.47\00:10:11.55 We have Mamre the Amorite. 00:10:11.56\00:10:13.84 He is the brother of Eshcol 00:10:13.85\00:10:15.09 and the brother of Aner, three brothers. 00:10:15.10\00:10:17.47 And you see here, 00:10:17.48\00:10:18.45 Abraham is mingling with three other. 00:10:18.46\00:10:20.71 He is conferring. He is making allies here. 00:10:20.72\00:10:23.97 In Verse 14, when Abraham heard his brother 00:10:23.98\00:10:27.11 or relative was taken captive which is, Lot 00:10:27.12\00:10:30.08 he armed his own, his servants. 00:10:30.09\00:10:33.59 He trained them and 318, and pursued them unto Dan. 00:10:33.60\00:10:39.16 Now if you know the geography of this area, 00:10:39.17\00:10:41.18 they are living in southern Israel, you know today, 00:10:41.19\00:10:44.75 and he goes all the way to the north 00:10:44.76\00:10:46.76 and he is coming with his 318, 00:10:46.77\00:10:48.94 these were men born in his own house. 00:10:48.95\00:10:50.64 And he is training them. Now does this guy, 00:10:50.65\00:10:53.62 Abraham, have any training in military warfare 00:10:53.63\00:10:56.71 and strategy whatsoever. No. But he was like, 00:10:56.72\00:11:00.52 I need to get my nephew back. 00:11:00.53\00:11:03.16 And a certain level of determination, 00:11:03.17\00:11:06.49 and he trains 318 and he goes all the way to the north 00:11:06.50\00:11:10.40 and that's where Dan is, pursue them unto Dan 00:11:10.41\00:11:12.81 and verse 15, this is verse interesting, 15. 00:11:12.82\00:11:14.91 "He divided himself against them." 00:11:14.92\00:11:17.10 He is a strategist. "He and his servants by night." 00:11:17.11\00:11:20.65 Question, why they are going by night? 00:11:20.66\00:11:23.98 It's, yeah it's dark. Good. It's dark. 00:11:23.99\00:11:26.92 They can't see him. Strategy. Okay, verse now. 00:11:26.93\00:11:30.33 "And he smote them and pursued them unto," where? 00:11:30.34\00:11:35.12 If you know geography, they are living in the south. 00:11:35.13\00:11:37.17 They go all the way north unto Dan 00:11:37.18\00:11:39.66 and then they go even far north unto Hobah, 00:11:39.67\00:11:44.48 meaning they pursue these enemies until the end. 00:11:44.49\00:11:49.49 It's not like, let's just go halfway, let's half big it. 00:11:49.50\00:11:52.78 Let's go halfway and just, you know, do halfway, 00:11:52.79\00:11:55.53 get my Nephew and get back out. 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.63 He gets his nephew and he continues 00:11:57.64\00:11:59.42 and pursues them all the way. 00:11:59.43\00:12:00.97 Verse 16, "he brought back all the goods, 00:12:00.98\00:12:03.64 brought also again his brother Lot his goods, 00:12:03.65\00:12:05.77 women also, and the people. 00:12:05.78\00:12:08.37 Let's go to Chapter 13:12, 13:12, 00:12:08.38\00:12:15.34 "Lots character was such, in Verse 12 it says, 00:12:15.35\00:12:18.49 "Abraham dwelled in the land of Canaan, 00:12:18.50\00:12:20.45 and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain 00:12:20.46\00:12:22.90 and pitched his tent," what? "Towards Sodom." 00:12:22.91\00:12:28.23 So here is Lot and there's the reputation of Sodom 00:12:28.24\00:12:32.07 was well known back in their day. 00:12:32.08\00:12:34.35 And he sees this Garden of Eden as kind of territory, 00:12:34.36\00:12:38.63 and he knows that Sodom is over there, 00:12:38.64\00:12:41.86 but he pitches his tent toward that area. 00:12:41.87\00:12:46.50 This is the beginning of his compromise. 00:12:46.51\00:12:50.13 Now Abraham is out in other 00:12:50.14\00:12:51.32 and he is staying away from Sodom. 00:12:51.33\00:12:54.05 Is there a tendency where in your subconscious 00:12:54.06\00:12:57.54 you know you want something? 00:12:57.55\00:12:59.63 But you know you should not go towards it, 00:12:59.64\00:13:01.92 but you lean towards it. 00:13:01.93\00:13:04.97 When you are on the internet you know you shouldn't go 00:13:04.98\00:13:06.82 to that website, but you go to another website 00:13:06.83\00:13:09.66 and do a search on it that's kind of similar 00:13:09.67\00:13:12.02 and by chance happen to go to this website. 00:13:12.03\00:13:15.51 Well you know you shouldn't go on this direction 00:13:15.52\00:13:17.65 to that place, you know onto on the way home, 00:13:17.66\00:13:20.22 but for today you decided to be creative, 00:13:20.23\00:13:22.41 and you take this particular route. 00:13:22.42\00:13:25.38 You know you shouldn't talk to this lady, 00:13:25.39\00:13:28.10 but because in your subconscious 00:13:28.11\00:13:29.72 you do wanna talk, you kind of lean towards her. 00:13:29.73\00:13:33.62 And here that's what he is doing. 00:13:33.63\00:13:35.08 He has his tent pitched towards Sodom. 00:13:35.09\00:13:39.80 Now next Chapter we see what's happening. 00:13:39.81\00:13:41.22 Go to Chapter 14:12, "sometime passes," 00:13:41.23\00:13:47.34 Chapter 14:12, and says that these nations took Lot. 00:13:47.35\00:13:51.70 Abraham's brother son and then it says, 00:13:51.71\00:13:55.00 Lot who dwelt, where? 00:13:55.01\00:13:57.26 Not towards Sodom but now, where? 00:13:58.54\00:14:01.57 He is now living in Sodom. 00:14:01.58\00:14:04.68 In Sodom! It's like hmm... 00:14:07.31\00:14:09.79 Let me, let me just live towards New York city. 00:14:09.80\00:14:13.06 You know the real estate over there is okay, 00:14:13.93\00:14:15.98 with this economy there is you know, 00:14:15.99\00:14:17.80 the market will go up. 00:14:17.81\00:14:18.94 I'll get some more money and you are going towards there 00:14:18.95\00:14:21.86 and after a couple of years, what? 00:14:21.87\00:14:23.37 We find out that Lot is living downtown Manhattan. 00:14:23.38\00:14:27.25 He is living inside. 00:14:28.78\00:14:31.34 That was interesting is, keep going Chapter 19:1, 00:14:31.35\00:14:36.80 stage one he is going towards this, 00:14:37.94\00:14:40.63 stage two he is in this. 00:14:40.64\00:14:43.19 And Chapter 19, the third stage, 00:14:43.20\00:14:47.39 "there came two angels to Sodom at even, 00:14:47.40\00:14:50.20 at evening; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom." 00:14:50.21\00:14:55.13 Question, what is this 'in the gate of Sodom?" 00:14:55.14\00:14:58.67 Back in their day, the gate was the 00:14:58.68\00:15:01.02 open area for the village, for the city. 00:15:01.03\00:15:04.04 That's where everyone would come out, 00:15:04.05\00:15:05.22 bring all their things, all their, 00:15:05.23\00:15:06.84 you know, goats and potatoes and, 00:15:06.85\00:15:09.35 I don't know what they bring in. 00:15:09.36\00:15:10.42 They would all sell it, okay. 00:15:10.43\00:15:11.87 Now there is a dispute amongst two people. 00:15:11.88\00:15:14.61 They come out to the front gate of the village. 00:15:14.62\00:15:17.62 And there the person who sits 00:15:17.63\00:15:19.72 at the gate was the town mayor 00:15:19.73\00:15:22.43 or the judge or someone in-charge at that time 00:15:22.44\00:15:26.73 and he would judge and moderate 00:15:26.74\00:15:31.95 some of these arguments. So stage three. 00:15:31.96\00:15:34.96 Here Lot sitting at the gate is not Lot's like, hmmm... 00:15:34.97\00:15:38.85 I need a place to sit. Oh there is a gate. 00:15:38.86\00:15:41.25 Ah, it's a free space. I will sit at the gate. 00:15:41.26\00:15:43.08 This is not the case. Amen. 00:15:43.09\00:15:45.74 He is in-charge of something inside. 00:15:45.75\00:15:49.29 Stage one, pitched a tent towards Sodom. 00:15:49.30\00:15:53.96 Stage two, he is in Sodom. 00:15:53.97\00:15:56.96 Stage three, he is in-charge of something in Sodom. 00:15:56.97\00:16:01.68 Okay. Now let's go to the 00:16:01.69\00:16:03.58 Chapter 18 and 19 and we gonna flip around here. 00:16:03.59\00:16:06.67 And look at some of the aspects of scripture here. 00:16:06.68\00:16:09.24 And scripture is so, I have a comical perspective 00:16:09.25\00:16:12.83 and it's funny what, what scripture does. 00:16:12.84\00:16:17.22 Chapter 18:1, "the LORD appeared 00:16:17.23\00:16:21.53 unto him in the plains of Mamre. 00:16:21.54\00:16:23.42 He sat in the tent door in the heat of the day. 00:16:23.43\00:16:26.85 He lifted up his eyes and looked, 00:16:26.86\00:16:28.41 and, lo, three men stood by him. 00:16:28.42\00:16:31.16 When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door. 00:16:31.17\00:16:34.24 He bowed himself to the ground and said, 00:16:34.25\00:16:36.45 "my Lord, if I, if now I have found favor in thy sight, 00:16:36.46\00:16:41.30 pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant. 00:16:41.31\00:16:43.70 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, 00:16:43.71\00:16:46.22 and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. 00:16:46.23\00:16:49.28 I will fetch a morsel of bread, comfort your hearts; 00:16:49.29\00:16:52.31 that you shall, after that you shall pass on: 00:16:52.32\00:16:54.93 for therefore are you come to your servant." 00:16:54.94\00:16:57.53 And they said, "So do, as thou said." 00:16:57.54\00:16:59.78 Abraham hastened into the tent, into Sarah, and said, 00:16:59.79\00:17:02.59 "Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, 00:17:02.60\00:17:05.13 knead it, make cakes upon the hearth." 00:17:05.14\00:17:07.44 And Abraham ran unto the herd, 00:17:07.45\00:17:08.98 fetched a calf tender and good, 00:17:08.99\00:17:11.77 gave it to a young man and he hastened to dress it. 00:17:11.78\00:17:14.57 He took butter, and milk, and the calf 00:17:14.58\00:17:16.15 which he had dressed, and set it before them; 00:17:16.16\00:17:18.44 and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat." 00:17:18.45\00:17:22.68 One characteristic of Abraham, 00:17:22.69\00:17:24.37 another characteristic I should say. 00:17:24.38\00:17:26.80 He is a man of hospitality. Now it's interesting. 00:17:26.81\00:17:32.65 Scripture goes to many verses 00:17:32.66\00:17:35.02 to describe this attribute of Abraham. 00:17:35.03\00:17:39.33 Couple of things to bring out. 00:17:39.34\00:17:41.51 Verse 2, he lifted up, he looks up and sees three men. 00:17:41.52\00:17:46.00 And when Bible says in Verse 2, 00:17:46.01\00:17:47.43 when he saw them, he what? He ran. 00:17:47.44\00:17:53.21 Is there a difference between a running and walking? 00:17:53.22\00:17:56.30 Did you ever felt awkward where there is 00:17:59.11\00:18:01.82 a long corridor and someone is walking towards you? 00:18:01.83\00:18:05.82 And you are walking towards them and you have to say, 00:18:05.83\00:18:08.62 hi, but you don't know when to say hi. 00:18:08.63\00:18:10.57 So like forward, hey Joe, hey Joe. 00:18:12.51\00:18:15.13 Alright, hey Justin and you are walking 00:18:15.14\00:18:17.12 and you have this awkward time 00:18:17.13\00:18:19.18 and you are kind of walking towards each other, 00:18:19.19\00:18:21.70 and you make conversations. So how is it going? 00:18:21.71\00:18:24.43 You enclose it or do you actually ignore each other, 00:18:24.44\00:18:28.13 until you get to a reasonable space and say, 00:18:28.14\00:18:30.75 hey, how's it going? 00:18:30.76\00:18:32.05 Yeah, I saw you full fire back, 00:18:32.06\00:18:33.28 but just wanna yelling, it's kind of awkward, 00:18:33.29\00:18:36.27 to make that awkward distance not so awkward. 00:18:36.28\00:18:40.46 Here Abraham as a sign of politeness, 00:18:40.47\00:18:43.33 what, he doesn't walk towards him. 00:18:43.34\00:18:45.61 Walking is a sign of arrogance, 00:18:45.62\00:18:47.11 if you will, but he runs out of hospitality, of humility. 00:18:47.12\00:18:51.85 Now when he runs, he says verses 3, 00:18:51.86\00:18:54.61 " My LORD, if now have found favor in your sight, 00:18:54.62\00:18:57.56 pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant." 00:18:57.57\00:18:59.33 Meaning, stay here, and he goes all out. 00:18:59.34\00:19:02.13 Verse 4, "Let a little water, I pray you, 00:19:02.14\00:19:04.91 be fetched, and wash your feet." 00:19:04.92\00:19:06.61 Question, why does he, 00:19:06.62\00:19:08.07 why do they need your feet to be washed? 00:19:08.08\00:19:09.69 In their society, in this society, 00:19:11.19\00:19:12.59 it's a desert culture. 00:19:12.60\00:19:14.48 You got desert, sands blowing everywhere 00:19:14.49\00:19:17.72 and in their day they did not have 00:19:17.73\00:19:20.46 wonderful Timberlands or Nike shoes. 00:19:20.47\00:19:23.35 They just had a piece of hard leather 00:19:23.36\00:19:25.29 on the bottom of their feet wrapped around 00:19:25.30\00:19:27.53 with string or a ligament of an animal or something. 00:19:27.54\00:19:31.09 So, as they are walking around their feet 00:19:31.10\00:19:33.92 has intimate contact with the sand 00:19:33.93\00:19:36.40 and the dirt all around them. Yes. 00:19:36.41\00:19:38.47 Now how many of you do when you do full washing, 00:19:38.48\00:19:40.69 your feet are extremely dirty. 00:19:40.70\00:19:43.07 If anything, when you do full washings 00:19:43.08\00:19:45.26 you got like sock fuzzies come under water 00:19:45.27\00:19:46.97 and gets this murky grayish, blue-black color. 00:19:46.98\00:19:50.69 And it's dirty, but it's not dirty-dirty. 00:19:50.70\00:19:53.41 Now when they washed feet, it was just, you know, 00:19:53.42\00:19:56.44 all the sand and stuff would come out. 00:19:56.45\00:19:58.11 But in addition, what kind of culture is this? 00:19:58.12\00:20:00.78 This is an agriculture society. 00:20:00.79\00:20:03.96 Along with humans walking on these roads, 00:20:03.97\00:20:06.41 what else is walking on these roads? 00:20:06.42\00:20:08.17 Not you beamer, not you homer, but what? 00:20:09.22\00:20:11.75 Mr. Cow, and Mrs. Camel 00:20:12.50\00:20:15.46 or you know whatever animals. 00:20:15.47\00:20:17.05 Now when animals run and when they move 00:20:17.06\00:20:20.29 they leave gifts on the floor, 00:20:20.30\00:20:22.47 on the offerings all over. 00:20:22.48\00:20:24.42 Now in our context we think, ah it's gross 00:20:24.43\00:20:27.06 and you would tippy-toe around these things 00:20:27.07\00:20:28.83 if you ever walked through apartments 00:20:28.84\00:20:29.81 and just dust or poop everywhere and you are like, 00:20:29.82\00:20:31.28 you are walking all around this way. 00:20:31.29\00:20:32.68 But here in their society, it's just animal poop, 00:20:32.69\00:20:36.64 so you just walk through it. 00:20:36.65\00:20:38.31 So, here is the context. 00:20:38.32\00:20:39.61 You are walking and if they walk for 00:20:39.62\00:20:41.45 miles and miles and miles and here there is dust 00:20:41.46\00:20:44.44 all over the feet and there is poop all over the feet 00:20:44.45\00:20:47.61 and then the dust sticks to the poop 00:20:47.62\00:20:49.82 and then it's hard and it gets all crusty 00:20:49.83\00:20:52.08 and funny you have these, 00:20:52.09\00:20:53.41 you know, cakes on your feet. 00:20:53.42\00:20:55.99 So when you are coming to eat, 00:20:57.76\00:20:59.30 what you want to do? 00:20:59.31\00:21:01.02 Washing your hands 00:21:01.03\00:21:02.47 with antibacterial soap is the least concern. 00:21:02.48\00:21:05.32 You wanna wash your feet. Are you with me? 00:21:06.77\00:21:08.51 So they go and he says, 00:21:09.73\00:21:10.70 let a little water be fetched. 00:21:10.71\00:21:12.26 Can you imagine? 00:21:12.27\00:21:13.26 He's like, hey little girl servant come here. 00:21:13.27\00:21:15.30 And he take the chisel out and they are chiseling away, 00:21:15.31\00:21:18.14 these crustified cakes of goodness 00:21:18.15\00:21:23.16 and it's floating in the water. 00:21:23.17\00:21:25.42 Can you imagine how refresh they are? 00:21:25.43\00:21:27.02 Ah! My feet are all clean. 00:21:27.03\00:21:30.88 If you have sand between you toes, 00:21:30.89\00:21:32.17 one of the most horrible sensations. 00:21:32.18\00:21:34.27 Anyway keep on going. 00:21:34.28\00:21:35.31 Verse 4, it say, "Let a little water, 00:21:36.62\00:21:38.26 I pray you, be fetched, wash your feet, 00:21:38.27\00:21:40.54 rest yourselves under the tree." 00:21:40.55\00:21:42.79 Trees are scarce. So there is the hot sun, 00:21:42.80\00:21:46.82 you are under the tree, that's refreshing, isn't it? 00:21:46.83\00:21:48.53 Yes, okay, Verse 5, "I will fetch 00:21:48.54\00:21:51.43 a morsel of bread, and comfort your hearts, 00:21:51.44\00:21:53.45 and after that you shall pass on; 00:21:53.46\00:21:55.01 for therefore are you come to your servant." 00:21:55.02\00:21:58.76 So Verse 6, Abraham what? He hastens. 00:21:58.77\00:22:02.52 Again, he is running. He goes to his wife. 00:22:02.53\00:22:04.44 He says make very quickly. 00:22:04.45\00:22:05.65 Now one of the most annoying things I heard, 00:22:05.66\00:22:08.03 I don't have a wife, but for husband 00:22:08.04\00:22:09.69 to do to the wife is, hey make some dinner now. 00:22:09.70\00:22:12.96 Five of my friends are coming right now. 00:22:12.97\00:22:14.96 And wife, you know, okay and she makes dinner 00:22:14.97\00:22:18.53 and she has to make something, 00:22:18.54\00:22:19.51 make something fresh out. 00:22:19.52\00:22:20.57 He does the same to Sarah 00:22:20.58\00:22:23.12 and here it's not the main meal. 00:22:23.13\00:22:24.95 It's just an appetizer. 00:22:24.96\00:22:26.21 A small little piece of bread, 00:22:26.22\00:22:27.47 have a little piece of bread, have appetizer. 00:22:27.48\00:22:30.00 And while he is making the appetizer, 00:22:30.01\00:22:31.49 she is making the appetizer. 00:22:31.50\00:22:32.58 He goes to a young man, verse 7, 00:22:32.59\00:22:35.00 "Abraham ran unto the herd, 00:22:35.01\00:22:36.92 fetched the calf tender and good." 00:22:36.93\00:22:38.46 Now this is the choice, you know, prime, 00:22:38.47\00:22:40.70 you know, Kobe Beef Filet Mignon, 00:22:40.71\00:22:43.36 I don't know. Use your imagination. 00:22:43.37\00:22:44.86 And gave it unto the young man 00:22:44.87\00:22:46.60 and he hastened to dress it. 00:22:46.61\00:22:48.49 Do you see the speed that Abraham is working at? 00:22:48.50\00:22:51.82 He runs, hastens to Sarah, 00:22:51.83\00:22:54.07 and hastens back to this young man. 00:22:54.08\00:22:56.01 Verse 8, "he took butter and milk," 00:22:56.02\00:22:58.90 very expensive things, "and the calf which 00:22:58.91\00:23:00.95 he had dressed and set it before them 00:23:00.96\00:23:03.11 and he stood by them under the tree," 00:23:03.12\00:23:05.32 and he is standing by while they are eating. 00:23:05.33\00:23:08.62 Meaning, I am the servant if you need anything, 00:23:08.63\00:23:11.89 I am here at your will. 00:23:11.90\00:23:14.47 This is a characteristic of a man of God. 00:23:14.48\00:23:18.59 Now, contrast this to the hospitality of Lot. 00:23:20.23\00:23:23.78 Go to Chapter 19:1; let's go to mid-half, the half of One. 00:23:23.79\00:23:30.67 "Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; 00:23:30.68\00:23:32.91 and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground." 00:23:32.92\00:23:35.36 And Lot is also gracious. He is the nephew of Abraham. 00:23:35.37\00:23:38.89 But Verse 2, "he said, Behold now, my lords, 00:23:38.90\00:23:42.15 turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, 00:23:42.16\00:23:44.77 tarry all night, wash your feet, 00:23:44.78\00:23:46.74 and you shall rise up early, go on your ways. 00:23:46.75\00:23:48.86 And they said nay we will abide 00:23:48.87\00:23:50.29 in the street all night. He pressed upon them greatly. 00:23:50.30\00:23:53.08 They turned in unto him, and entered into his house, 00:23:53.09\00:23:56.49 and he made them a feast and bake them," what? " 00:23:56.50\00:23:59.91 Unleavened bread and they did eat." 00:23:59.92\00:24:02.02 Question, are there differences here? 00:24:02.03\00:24:03.65 In Chapter 18, scripture uses about 8 verses 00:24:05.04\00:24:08.98 to describe what Abraham did. 00:24:08.99\00:24:12.52 In Chapter 19 there is only may be a half, 00:24:12.53\00:24:16.02 one-and-a-half verse that described what Lot did. 00:24:16.03\00:24:18.60 Interesting verse 2, he says, stay here all night 00:24:19.72\00:24:23.42 and wash your own feet. It's an imperative. 00:24:23.43\00:24:26.62 Hey here's some water you wash your own feet. 00:24:26.63\00:24:29.34 Where he says, let water be fetched 00:24:29.35\00:24:31.53 and let your feet be washed. 00:24:31.54\00:24:33.32 It's in the past tense. And verse 2, "he says," 00:24:33.33\00:24:36.46 and you shall rise up early and go on your ways."" 00:24:36.47\00:24:38.73 Meaning get up early and you can get out of here. 00:24:38.74\00:24:41.47 Okay. In verse 3, 00:24:41.48\00:24:43.57 "he makes them a feast but bakes them," what? 00:24:43.58\00:24:45.92 Does he goes all out with fine flour 00:24:45.93\00:24:48.28 and kneads them with choice bread and gets them a calf. 00:24:48.29\00:24:51.60 What does he makes them? 00:24:51.61\00:24:53.11 He makes them unleavened bread. 00:24:53.12\00:24:55.77 Do you know what unleavened bread is? 00:24:55.78\00:24:57.72 It's bread with a leaven, yeah we know. 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.24 Well, unleavened bread is unleavened bread 00:24:59.25\00:25:02.47 because it's quick to make. 00:25:02.48\00:25:04.25 You don't have to wait for the yeast to rise. 00:25:06.28\00:25:09.29 So we see here is Abraham goes all out. 00:25:09.30\00:25:12.54 He's running, making a feast. 00:25:12.55\00:25:14.36 He is getting flame in yarn and going all out. 00:25:14.37\00:25:16.85 Lot comes, and he also has some hospitality. 00:25:18.11\00:25:20.90 And he presses upon them greatly. 00:25:20.91\00:25:22.56 But says, hey here some water, 00:25:22.57\00:25:23.66 wash your own feet, and by the way here's a microwave 00:25:23.67\00:25:25.68 burrito in the meantime while you are waiting. 00:25:25.69\00:25:27.70 Is there a difference between the two? 00:25:29.60\00:25:32.01 Yes there is. Continuing on, 00:25:32.02\00:25:34.00 Abraham was an example of maximum hospitality, 00:25:35.31\00:25:38.37 and Lot was an example of minimum hospitality. 00:25:38.38\00:25:42.19 Chapter 18 and 19 are comparing and contrasting. 00:25:42.20\00:25:44.70 We are going to see for today, 00:25:44.71\00:25:45.91 what aspects are the same? 00:25:45.92\00:25:47.84 For example in Chapter 18:9 and 10, 00:25:47.85\00:25:51.41 "They, the angles said unto him, 00:25:51.42\00:25:53.04 "where is Sarah your wife?" 00:25:53.05\00:25:55.09 And he said, Behold, in the tent?" 00:25:55.10\00:25:57.43 In verse 10, "And he said, I will certainly 00:25:57.44\00:26:00.14 return unto you according to the time of life; 00:26:00.15\00:26:02.48 and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. 00:26:02.49\00:26:05.16 Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him." 00:26:05.17\00:26:08.29 What we have here is a conversation 00:26:08.30\00:26:11.01 between on both sides of the door. 00:26:11.02\00:26:13.89 You have Abraham and the angels 00:26:13.90\00:26:15.66 on one side of the door and on the other side is who? 00:26:15.67\00:26:18.70 You have Sarah listening in. 00:26:18.71\00:26:20.65 In Chapter 19, and I know many of you know the story. 00:26:20.66\00:26:24.42 Is there a conversation that is 00:26:24.43\00:26:26.27 happening on both sides of the door? 00:26:26.28\00:26:28.47 Chapter 19:5, "these Sodomite men 00:26:30.30\00:26:36.88 called out unto Lot and said unto to him, 00:26:36.89\00:26:38.97 "where are the men which came in to see to thee this night? 00:26:38.98\00:26:42.80 Bring them out unto us that we know them." 00:26:42.81\00:26:45.25 But Lot went out at the door unto them, 00:26:45.26\00:26:47.87 shut the door after him, and he said 00:26:47.88\00:26:49.85 I pray you brethren do not so wickedly." 00:26:49.86\00:26:54.60 I think just funny verse 6, 00:26:54.61\00:26:56.29 "he shuts the door behind him." 00:26:56.30\00:26:57.83 I would have not shut the door behind me. 00:26:57.84\00:26:59.99 I would have kind of kept it open for and is, 00:27:00.00\00:27:03.05 but he is protecting his people. 00:27:04.86\00:27:06.02 Okay. Now Verse 8. 00:27:06.03\00:27:08.80 "Behold now, I have two daughters 00:27:08.81\00:27:10.35 which have not known man; let me, 00:27:10.36\00:27:12.45 I pray thee, bring them out to you, 00:27:12.46\00:27:14.80 do thee unto them as is good in your eyes: 00:27:14.81\00:27:17.49 only onto these men do nothing; 00:27:17.50\00:27:19.46 therefore came they under the shadow of my roof." 00:27:19.47\00:27:21.38 We'll talk about that a little bit later. 00:27:21.39\00:27:22.79 Verse 10, let's go to verse 10. 00:27:22.80\00:27:24.31 Let us pass to verse 9, 00:27:25.36\00:27:27.10 "they pressed sore upon the man, 00:27:27.11\00:27:29.35 specially Lot, and came near to," what? 00:27:29.36\00:27:32.68 "To break the door." 00:27:32.69\00:27:34.43 Verse 10, "the men put forth their hand, 00:27:34.44\00:27:37.09 and pulled Lot into the house to them and shut to the door. 00:27:37.10\00:27:40.79 They smote the men that were at the 00:27:40.80\00:27:42.09 door of the house with blindness, 00:27:42.10\00:27:43.73 both small and great; so that they wearied 00:27:43.74\00:27:45.67 themselves to find the door." 00:27:45.68\00:27:47.10 We see here two instances. 00:27:47.11\00:27:50.94 One there is a conversation happening at the door, 00:27:50.95\00:27:53.16 where's your wife? She is over there. 00:27:53.17\00:27:55.16 And they said you are going to be pregnant with the son. 00:27:55.17\00:27:57.91 Here there is a conversation at the door. 00:27:57.92\00:28:00.00 These men are like give us the men 00:28:00.01\00:28:02.25 and then they are fighting 00:28:02.26\00:28:03.23 and the door is about to break. 00:28:03.24\00:28:04.71 Okay, next part of comparison. 00:28:04.72\00:28:06.80 Go to Genesis 18:17, 18:17, 00:28:06.81\00:28:10.94 18:17, God is speaking to himself and He says, 00:28:12.87\00:28:17.14 "Shall I hide from Abraham the thing which I do?" 00:28:17.15\00:28:20.73 Talking about Sodom and Gomorrah destruction." 00:28:20.74\00:28:22.91 Verse 18, " Seeing that Abraham 00:28:22.92\00:28:25.51 shall surely become a great and mighty nation, 00:28:25.52\00:28:28.16 and all the nations of the earth 00:28:28.17\00:28:29.54 shall be blessed in him?" Verse 19, "for I," what? 00:28:29.55\00:28:34.17 "I know him." Question, does God know you? 00:28:34.18\00:28:39.20 Does He say I know Bob? I know Steve. 00:28:40.53\00:28:47.43 I know Justin. Now interestingly enough 00:28:47.44\00:28:51.17 this word for 'know' is the word 'Yada' in Hebrew. 00:28:51.18\00:28:54.33 Meaning it is an intimate knowledge 00:28:54.34\00:28:57.38 and understanding of. It is not just know 00:28:57.39\00:29:00.71 in the sense of, hey, do you guys know Michael Jackson? 00:29:00.72\00:29:03.37 Or how many know Michael Jackson? 00:29:03.38\00:29:06.16 I don't think any of you knows Michael Jackson. 00:29:06.17\00:29:09.86 Too many of you know your best friend 00:29:09.87\00:29:12.46 or your wife or your parents 00:29:12.47\00:29:14.50 but you don't know Michael Jackson. 00:29:14.51\00:29:16.55 But you know him, yes. 00:29:16.56\00:29:18.12 Isn't there a difference between the two? 00:29:18.13\00:29:19.54 Okay. And here he says "I know him." 00:29:19.55\00:29:24.48 Chapter 19, Chapter 19, yeah, Chapter 19. 00:29:24.49\00:29:27.47 There is a Verse 5, the same word is used. 00:29:27.48\00:29:32.61 "They called out unto Lot, and they said unto him, 00:29:32.62\00:29:34.91 where are the men which came in to thee this night? 00:29:34.92\00:29:37.93 Bring them out to us, that we may," what? " 00:29:37.94\00:29:40.38 that we may know them." 00:29:41.39\00:29:43.88 And we all know what kind of know that is. 00:29:43.89\00:29:45.65 It is an extra curricular kind of intimate, 00:29:45.66\00:29:48.01 you know, you know, weird deviant way 'know'. 00:29:48.02\00:29:50.78 Here Abraham, it has the connection 00:29:53.27\00:29:57.58 and the environment of heaven. 00:29:57.59\00:29:59.96 All of the Heaven knows Him. 00:29:59.97\00:30:01.66 Here Lot is surrounded with people 00:30:02.25\00:30:05.79 who have perverse ideas. And they have 00:30:05.80\00:30:08.69 a 'Yada' in a different sinful way. 00:30:08.70\00:30:12.40 Chapter 18:11, next point of comparison, 18:11, 00:30:13.64\00:30:18.45 "Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; 00:30:20.33\00:30:23.20 it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. 00:30:23.21\00:30:25.94 And therefore Sarah," what? What she did do? She laughed. 00:30:25.95\00:30:30.66 The Hebrew word for laugh is, it's a 'Yitzhak,' 00:30:30.67\00:30:35.21 does it sound like anything. 00:30:35.22\00:30:36.66 Their son's name was 'Yitzhak' 00:30:36.67\00:30:40.56 or the anglicized version Isaac. It's funny. 00:30:40.57\00:30:45.56 She laughed and God says you laughed? 00:30:45.57\00:30:48.42 Then she says I laughed not. 00:30:48.43\00:30:50.17 And later on she has a baby 00:30:50.18\00:30:51.43 and she laughed in a different way. 00:30:51.44\00:30:52.89 Yes. She laughed by having her child. 00:30:52.90\00:30:54.87 And here, in chapter 19 verse 12, 00:30:56.09\00:30:59.21 the word 'Yitzhak' comes off same derivative. 00:31:00.98\00:31:03.83 See if you can point it out. 00:31:05.00\00:31:06.45 Chapter 19:12, "the angels said to Lot, 00:31:06.46\00:31:12.14 "Hast thou here any besides? 00:31:12.15\00:31:14.35 Son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, 00:31:14.36\00:31:16.25 and whatsoever thou hast in the city, 00:31:16.26\00:31:17.68 bring them out of this place 00:31:17.69\00:31:19.29 for we will destroy this place?"" 00:31:19.30\00:31:20.61 Verse 14, "Lot went out, and spake unto 00:31:21.53\00:31:23.95 his sons in law, which married his daughters, 00:31:23.96\00:31:25.90 and said, "Up, get you out of this place; 00:31:25.91\00:31:29.79 for the LORD will destroy this city." 00:31:29.80\00:31:32.58 But he seemed as one that mocked to his sons in law." 00:31:32.59\00:31:37.28 Now in the King James it is very unclear, 00:31:37.29\00:31:39.18 but the word that is used there is, 00:31:39.19\00:31:40.61 'Yitzhak', meaning not that Lot made fun of his sons, 00:31:40.62\00:31:45.34 that wouldn't make any sense. 00:31:45.35\00:31:46.51 It's actually other way around. 00:31:46.52\00:31:47.97 His sons-in-law, what? Made fun of his father. 00:31:47.98\00:31:52.58 Now Chapter 18 verse 19. 00:31:54.45\00:31:57.40 God says, "For I know him, 00:31:58.95\00:32:01.34 I adore him and he will command 00:32:01.35\00:32:04.09 his children and his household after him, 00:32:04.10\00:32:07.17 and they shall keep the way of the LORD, 00:32:07.18\00:32:08.90 to do justice and judgment; the LORD may bring upon 00:32:08.91\00:32:12.46 Abraham that which he had spoken unto him." 00:32:12.47\00:32:15.87 Here God says I know this man 00:32:15.88\00:32:19.35 because he commands his household. 00:32:19.36\00:32:23.01 Now this is not an authoritarian powers, 00:32:23.02\00:32:25.68 power trip. He's not saying, yeah, 00:32:25.69\00:32:27.18 I am the man, and I had to beat 00:32:27.19\00:32:28.95 my wife and my children to get me 00:32:28.96\00:32:30.63 my Latte in the morning. 00:32:30.64\00:32:32.73 Not this, but he has a command 00:32:32.74\00:32:35.67 structure of his household in the way of, what? 00:32:35.68\00:32:39.26 In the way of the Lord. 00:32:39.27\00:32:41.61 The greatest need in our Church today, 00:32:42.79\00:32:46.32 is men who know how to be fathers 00:32:46.33\00:32:49.29 and to command their households 00:32:49.30\00:32:51.66 not after themselves, not after the world, 00:32:51.67\00:32:55.07 but in the way of the Lord. 00:32:55.08\00:32:58.96 In North America, especially in United States of America, 00:32:58.97\00:33:03.00 men have a hard time especially with the 00:33:03.01\00:33:04.87 baby boomer generation right now. 00:33:04.88\00:33:07.02 There has been an absence of a pattern of fatherhood. 00:33:07.03\00:33:11.02 Because the World War I and II, 00:33:11.03\00:33:12.98 an entire generation of fathers 00:33:12.99\00:33:15.14 has been just obliterated. 00:33:15.15\00:33:17.28 So the next generation that pops up, 00:33:17.29\00:33:19.56 men do not know how to be fathers. 00:33:19.57\00:33:23.00 For women it is different. 00:33:23.01\00:33:24.67 It is biological to be a mother. 00:33:24.68\00:33:27.27 A mother when she is pregnant has a child. 00:33:27.28\00:33:29.54 She has intimate connection with the child. 00:33:29.55\00:33:31.21 The child is inside of her. 00:33:31.22\00:33:32.86 She has the mechanical structure 00:33:32.87\00:33:34.61 and the biological structure to know how to be a mother. 00:33:34.62\00:33:37.12 She can feed the child. 00:33:37.13\00:33:38.13 She knows how to take care of her child. 00:33:38.14\00:33:39.25 There is something natural about it, 00:33:39.26\00:33:41.40 whereas the father has no intermittent connection 00:33:41.41\00:33:45.00 with the child, yes? How many of you, 00:33:45.01\00:33:47.34 when you had your child for the first time. 00:33:47.35\00:33:49.98 You saw your child for the first time, 00:33:49.99\00:33:51.44 like wow, he is real. He is, that's mine. 00:33:51.45\00:33:57.30 I have no idea what that feels like. 00:33:59.74\00:34:01.73 But it's interesting, it takes longer for the 00:34:02.82\00:34:04.95 husband to get acclimated 00:34:04.96\00:34:06.83 to the child than it does mother. 00:34:06.84\00:34:08.88 A father needs to learn how to be a father. 00:34:08.89\00:34:13.14 And too often many men become biological fathers 00:34:14.48\00:34:19.88 without learning how to be fathers. Amen. 00:34:19.89\00:34:23.53 The only way to learn how to be a good father 00:34:25.25\00:34:27.34 is to have a good example of a Biblical father. 00:34:27.35\00:34:30.03 And then in North America that pattern has been broken. 00:34:30.04\00:34:32.53 Here God says I know him. 00:34:34.26\00:34:37.52 He can command his household, verse 19, 00:34:37.53\00:34:39.97 "he will command his children and his household 00:34:39.98\00:34:43.93 after him that they shall keep the way of the Lord 00:34:43.94\00:34:46.80 to do justice and judgment that the Lord may bring upon 00:34:46.81\00:34:50.27 Abraham that was just spoken of him." 00:34:50.28\00:34:52.62 Now contrast that here Chapter 19:14, 00:34:52.63\00:34:58.37 "Lot went out and speak unto his sons in law," 00:34:58.38\00:35:00.99 interestingly enough does Lot have a father? 00:35:01.00\00:35:04.44 His father had passed away early, 00:35:04.45\00:35:06.66 that's why he comes and falls or enter 00:35:06.67\00:35:08.39 into the guardianship of his uncle. 00:35:08.40\00:35:11.62 Verse 14, "he seemed as one that 00:35:11.63\00:35:14.13 mocked unto his sons in law." 00:35:14.14\00:35:17.05 His sons in law are making fun of him. 00:35:17.06\00:35:20.38 Lot goes and he says, guys pack up your goods. 00:35:20.39\00:35:23.59 We got to get out of here. 00:35:23.60\00:35:24.78 And I don't know what they did. 00:35:24.79\00:35:26.54 I don't know if they sat down under their sofas 00:35:26.55\00:35:28.69 and they held onto their, and they are laughing, 00:35:28.70\00:35:31.20 they are pointing, or if they slapped their 00:35:31.21\00:35:33.44 father-in-law back of the head like 00:35:33.45\00:35:34.88 hey get with the program what are you talking about. 00:35:34.89\00:35:37.35 I don't know if they made fun of him, 00:35:37.36\00:35:38.66 if they ignored him, but he had no respect whatsoever. 00:35:38.67\00:35:42.34 Today in North America, if you do cultural exegesis, 00:35:42.35\00:35:46.96 every TV show makes fun of the father figure. 00:35:46.97\00:35:50.98 It started in the early 1990s 00:35:50.99\00:35:53.16 and I did a seminar on this last year. 00:35:53.17\00:35:55.51 It started with one TV show in 00:35:55.52\00:35:57.64 a response to the Cosby show. 00:35:57.65\00:35:59.94 Cosby show all throughout the 80s 00:35:59.95\00:36:01.52 was the epitome of Fatherhood. 00:36:01.53\00:36:02.93 You know the Cosby show? 00:36:02.94\00:36:03.91 Okay, next generation has no idea who Bill Cosby is. 00:36:04.96\00:36:08.14 It's a shame, Bill Cosby was a good father, 00:36:08.15\00:36:11.88 Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable. And he had his wife 00:36:11.89\00:36:15.38 who is a lawyer, and all these kids, 00:36:15.39\00:36:17.15 and it was place when America was hurting, 00:36:17.16\00:36:20.28 when America was anxious, they turned on their TV 00:36:20.29\00:36:23.97 and they would be with Heathcliff Huxtable. 00:36:23.98\00:36:27.01 And he would give father the advice 00:36:27.02\00:36:28.55 and the classic scene is when he is 00:36:28.56\00:36:30.95 teaching his son Theo about life. 00:36:30.96\00:36:33.39 He meant monopoly, I don't know if you watch TV 00:36:33.40\00:36:35.42 if you don't that's fine, but if you do that's the 00:36:35.43\00:36:37.06 classic scene of fatherhood. 00:36:37.07\00:36:39.62 Well in comes Fox network. 00:36:39.63\00:36:42.09 Fox network has not been around for a while. 00:36:42.10\00:36:44.42 Back then it was the big three--CBS, NBC and ABC. 00:36:44.43\00:36:49.96 In comes Fox network and they say, 00:36:49.97\00:36:51.73 how can we compete against the big three. 00:36:51.74\00:36:54.42 And they come up with this risqué programming 00:36:54.43\00:36:56.98 and one of the first TV shows that come up with 00:36:56.99\00:36:59.27 is called, "Married... with Children." 00:36:59.28\00:37:02.59 For the first time "Married with Children," 00:37:02.60\00:37:04.40 comes on and says instead of 00:37:04.41\00:37:05.94 revealing the father figure let's, 00:37:05.95\00:37:09.55 'Yitzhak the father.' Let's make fun of him. 00:37:09.56\00:37:12.80 Let's make him a degenerated, drunk, 00:37:12.81\00:37:15.90 stupid, fat, you know just a lazy incompetent father. 00:37:15.91\00:37:21.14 And at the end of the early shows of 00:37:21.15\00:37:23.20 "Married with Children," they end, 00:37:23.21\00:37:25.47 they conclude with the mother 00:37:25.48\00:37:28.35 and the two kids making fun of Al Bundy at every episode. 00:37:28.36\00:37:32.61 Oh dad! You can't, you cannot support us. 00:37:32.62\00:37:35.17 Oh dad you are an idiot. Oh dad you just drink beer 00:37:35.18\00:37:37.68 and you sit in front of your TV all day. 00:37:37.69\00:37:39.26 Well that's our dad. Ha! Ha! Ha! 00:37:39.27\00:37:41.46 And the credits roll. We are in a generation, 00:37:41.47\00:37:45.00 we are in a culture with the father figure, 00:37:45.01\00:37:47.68 it's an authority the Lord has given us, 00:37:47.69\00:37:50.26 where the rest of the world now it says 00:37:50.27\00:37:52.90 fathers are to be made fun of. 00:37:52.91\00:37:55.01 Now what happens? This program goes off the roof. 00:37:55.71\00:37:59.72 They started picking up another TV show, 00:37:59.73\00:38:02.08 not on reality but a cartoonized 00:38:02.09\00:38:04.79 animated version of this. 00:38:04.80\00:38:06.59 And it's not called "Married with Children," 00:38:06.60\00:38:08.17 it's one of the longest running TV shows 00:38:08.18\00:38:09.82 ever in history and it's called the, what? 00:38:09.83\00:38:12.67 "The Simpsons." Yellow, you know, 00:38:12.68\00:38:15.40 yellowish weird things and guess what? 00:38:15.41\00:38:17.53 The father figure is, what's his name? 00:38:17.54\00:38:20.91 Homer Simpson and he is the carbon copy of Al Bundy, 00:38:20.92\00:38:25.08 but for more general population. 00:38:25.09\00:38:27.73 And guess what? After that, all the sitcoms 00:38:27.74\00:38:31.89 whereas throughout the 70s and 80s the father figure 00:38:31.90\00:38:34.57 was the backbone from that point on, 00:38:34.58\00:38:36.50 there is a paradigm shift. And from that point on 00:38:36.51\00:38:39.06 all TV shows make fun of the father. 00:38:39.07\00:38:42.40 This is not a source of comedy. 00:38:43.93\00:38:45.99 This is an attack on masculinity, 00:38:46.00\00:38:49.40 the way that the Lord had originally intended. Amen. 00:38:49.41\00:38:53.79 Here Lot is being made fun of by his children. 00:38:53.80\00:38:59.16 Gentlemen, I plead with you as fathers, 00:38:59.17\00:39:01.11 as grandfathers, as uncles, 00:39:01.12\00:39:02.72 as sons--do not have anyone mock you. 00:39:02.73\00:39:06.25 Now I am not saying you'd be stern, authoritarian. 00:39:06.26\00:39:09.23 You know, have a, you know, 00:39:09.24\00:39:10.23 a sword in your hand and you chop off 00:39:10.24\00:39:12.25 people's heads every time they laugh at you. 00:39:12.26\00:39:13.41 I am not saying that at all. 00:39:13.42\00:39:14.67 We went from one extreme of masculine dominance 00:39:16.71\00:39:21.43 and we are going to the other way, 00:39:21.44\00:39:22.58 where we become this effeminate, oprahization men, 00:39:22.59\00:39:26.66 who sit around and talk about our feelings and cry. 00:39:26.67\00:39:30.48 There is nothing wrong with talking about your feelings 00:39:30.49\00:39:32.40 and nothing wrong with crying but can we 00:39:32.41\00:39:34.85 become uber-feminized men. 00:39:34.86\00:39:38.15 Is that where the direction culture is going towards? 00:39:38.16\00:39:41.88 And what happens? When a man is incompetent 00:39:41.89\00:39:45.38 he ceases to be a man. 00:39:45.39\00:39:48.09 A defining mark of masculinity is competence. 00:39:48.10\00:39:52.27 Where Abraham says my nephew is gone 00:39:52.28\00:39:56.43 318 I am going to train you. 00:39:56.44\00:39:57.99 We are going to get this finished, 00:39:58.00\00:39:59.70 no matter what it takes to get my nephew back. 00:39:59.71\00:40:04.64 I will not be allowing it when a command my child. 00:40:04.65\00:40:06.97 But in chapter 18 he says in the way of the Lord, 00:40:06.98\00:40:10.82 that's important amen, in the way of the Lord, 00:40:10.83\00:40:13.86 that word for 'way' is the word 'Derek,' 00:40:15.61\00:40:18.08 that's found in Chapter 19 also. 00:40:18.09\00:40:20.73 Chapter 19, open with me Chapter 19, 00:40:20.74\00:40:23.24 Chapter 19. I am in chapter 22. 00:40:23.25\00:40:27.54 Chapter 19 and verse 30, 00:40:33.88\00:40:40.43 Chapter 19:30 and this is one of the perverse, 00:40:42.90\00:40:45.89 weird passages of scripture. 00:40:47.76\00:40:49.53 And you know this passage, many of you do. 00:40:49.54\00:40:51.19 Verse 30, "Lot went up out of Zoar, 00:40:51.20\00:40:53.88 and dwelt in the mountain, 00:40:53.89\00:40:54.86 and his two daughters with him; 00:40:54.87\00:40:56.38 for he feared to dwell in Zoar: 00:40:56.39\00:40:57.54 and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters." 00:40:57.55\00:40:59.91 Verse 31, "the firstborn said unto the younger, 00:40:59.92\00:41:03.72 'Our father is old, and there is not a man in earth 00:41:03.73\00:41:07.44 to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth"'. 00:41:07.45\00:41:11.54 That word for manner in Greek, guess what it is? 00:41:11.55\00:41:14.72 It is the word 'Derek'. 00:41:14.73\00:41:16.43 Chapter 18, "Derek of the Lord," 00:41:17.77\00:41:21.12 Chapter 19, "the Derek of the world." 00:41:21.13\00:41:23.80 Do you see how the two are contrasting each other? 00:41:23.81\00:41:25.86 There are two ways to be a man, 00:41:25.87\00:41:27.56 one to be a man after the Lord's own heart, 00:41:27.57\00:41:30.79 and another way to be a man after the world. 00:41:30.80\00:41:33.02 And guess what happens in this situation. 00:41:33.03\00:41:34.94 These daughters are skimming. 00:41:34.95\00:41:36.31 There is no other way for this guy to be our father, 00:41:36.32\00:41:39.25 so that's what we should we do? 00:41:39.26\00:41:40.90 Let's have an extracurricular activity with him 00:41:40.91\00:41:43.90 and I shall have a child, his name shall be Moab 00:41:43.91\00:41:46.44 and you get the Moabites and you get 00:41:46.45\00:41:47.64 the pre-generator of one of route to becomes 00:41:47.65\00:41:50.75 in the line of Jesus, and the second born becomes Ammon. 00:41:50.76\00:41:54.64 And Amenities come on, the Moabites 00:41:54.65\00:41:56.57 and Ammonites annoy the Israelites 00:41:56.58\00:41:58.92 from that point on. There are two ways. 00:41:58.93\00:42:01.11 Derek of the Lord, Derek of the World. 00:42:01.12\00:42:04.68 Next point of comparison Chapter 19:15, 19:15, 00:42:04.69\00:42:12.10 "when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, 00:42:14.04\00:42:17.66 saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, 00:42:17.67\00:42:20.31 which are here; lest thou be 00:42:20.32\00:42:21.42 consumed in the iniquity of the city." 00:42:21.43\00:42:23.94 Verse 16, "while he," what? "Lingered." 00:42:23.95\00:42:29.66 Here you see Abraham is a epidemy of haste, 00:42:31.43\00:42:35.81 of competence, and he is quick. 00:42:35.82\00:42:39.08 When there is an emergency situation, 00:42:39.09\00:42:41.07 men know exactly what to do. 00:42:41.08\00:42:42.93 Call 911. Get the ambulance. 00:42:42.94\00:42:45.44 Bring a towel. Get me a coke. 00:42:45.45\00:42:47.24 You know, whatever you do decaffeinated. 00:42:47.25\00:42:48.92 You know, whatever you got to do. 00:42:48.93\00:42:51.53 Now here Lot is incompetent. He lingers. 00:42:51.54\00:42:56.62 Now if this was a so, so kind of ambiguous situation, 00:42:56.63\00:43:01.30 lingering could be logical. Yes. 00:43:01.31\00:43:04.15 Hey, there is a cow coming 00:43:04.16\00:43:06.75 towards you from 15 miles away. 00:43:06.76\00:43:09.47 Okay well let me linger for a while. 00:43:09.48\00:43:10.96 That makes sense. But what is the context 00:43:10.97\00:43:14.18 of the situation that's happening here. 00:43:14.19\00:43:16.38 He says there are fireballs coming down 00:43:16.39\00:43:18.89 from the city now get out with your daughters. 00:43:18.90\00:43:22.53 Lot is thinking umm... hmm... 00:43:22.54\00:43:25.71 Yeah, let met get on internet here. Fireballs.com. 00:43:27.54\00:43:33.30 Yeah, the weather channel and he is lingering. 00:43:33.31\00:43:36.38 Gentlemen how many of us, do we dilly-dally 00:43:36.39\00:43:39.62 with the small things of life. 00:43:39.63\00:43:42.12 Gentlemen are competent 00:43:42.13\00:43:43.71 in every avenues of their lives. 00:43:43.72\00:43:46.61 And too often no one has taught us how to be men 00:43:46.62\00:43:50.76 and the way that we've been since boys 00:43:50.77\00:43:53.11 has just carried on to marriage and some of us are 00:43:53.12\00:43:56.96 80, 90 year old over-needy boys. 00:43:56.97\00:44:00.63 And we are not looking for wives to compliment us 00:44:00.64\00:44:03.69 and to ameliorate our ministries. 00:44:03.70\00:44:05.88 We are just finding other moms to take care of us. 00:44:05.89\00:44:08.79 Here verse 16, "While he lingered, 00:44:10.59\00:44:14.80 the men laid hold upon his hand 00:44:14.81\00:44:17.17 and upon the hand of his wife, 00:44:17.18\00:44:18.39 and upon the hand of his two daughters; 00:44:18.40\00:44:19.75 the LORD being merciful unto him: 00:44:19.76\00:44:21.70 and they brought him out, and set him without the city." 00:44:21.71\00:44:26.41 Now here because he lingers 00:44:26.42\00:44:29.75 that lingering attribute of his character 00:44:29.76\00:44:33.08 has an impression upon his wife. 00:44:33.09\00:44:36.63 The little things that men do, 00:44:36.64\00:44:38.95 everyone watches especially your children, 00:44:38.96\00:44:41.77 especially your wife. And because he lingers, 00:44:41.78\00:44:44.53 the wife does not take seriously 00:44:44.54\00:44:47.64 the admonition of the Angels. 00:44:47.65\00:44:50.99 And what happens to Lot's wife? 00:44:51.00\00:44:52.85 You all know this, Mrs. Lot, verse 26 00:44:52.86\00:44:55.46 "but Mrs. Lord looked back from behind him, 00:44:57.33\00:45:00.59 and she became," what? " 00:45:00.60\00:45:02.28 A compliment to table pepper." 00:45:03.59\00:45:05.58 She looked back. The salvation of your wives, 00:45:07.18\00:45:13.15 the salvation of your families, 00:45:13.16\00:45:16.95 very well may be dependent on you, 00:45:16.96\00:45:20.69 upon your spirituality, upon your shoulders. 00:45:21.81\00:45:26.77 In Genesis Chapter 1, God instructs to Adam 00:45:26.78\00:45:31.08 to be responsible for his wife and the household. 00:45:31.09\00:45:35.20 Last point of comparison, last point of comparison. 00:45:35.21\00:45:38.46 Chapter 18 verse 22, 18:22, 00:45:40.69\00:45:43.26 18:22, "The men turned their faces from thence, 00:45:45.08\00:45:48.69 and went towards Sodom, 00:45:48.70\00:45:49.75 but Abraham stood yet before the Lord. 00:45:49.76\00:45:52.39 Abraham drew near, and said, 00:45:52.40\00:45:54.56 "Will you also destroy the righteous with the wicked?" 00:45:54.57\00:45:57.53 Peradventure, may be, there would be fifty people." 00:45:57.54\00:45:59.90 And you know this conversation. 00:45:59.91\00:46:01.18 May be there is 50, will you destroy? 00:46:01.19\00:46:02.74 God says no. Forty Five? No. 00:46:02.75\00:46:04.83 Thirty? No. 00:46:04.84\00:46:05.90 Twenty? No. 00:46:05.91\00:46:06.98 Ten? And he has this long conversation. 00:46:06.99\00:46:10.75 He is in prayer. He is in meditation. 00:46:10.76\00:46:13.93 He is meditating on the behalf of his nephew. 00:46:13.94\00:46:18.32 In chapter 19, Lot is also praying. 00:46:18.33\00:46:20.63 Chapter 19 verse 17, "it came to pass 00:46:22.08\00:46:26.97 when they had brought them forth abroad, he said, 00:46:26.98\00:46:29.53 "Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, 00:46:29.54\00:46:32.56 neither stay thou in all the plain, 00:46:34.26\00:46:35.59 escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed."" 00:46:35.60\00:46:37.79 Verse 18, "Lot says unto them," what? 00:46:37.80\00:46:41.22 "Oh! Not so my Lord, Behold now, 00:46:41.23\00:46:44.55 thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, 00:46:44.56\00:46:46.84 and thou hast magnified thy mercy, 00:46:46.85\00:46:48.60 which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; 00:46:48.61\00:46:51.01 I cannot escape to the mountain, 00:46:51.02\00:46:53.03 lest some evil take me, and I die. 00:46:53.04\00:46:55.17 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, 00:46:55.18\00:46:57.94 and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, 00:46:57.95\00:47:00.82 is it not a little one? And my soul shall live then." 00:47:00.83\00:47:03.77 At the end of each chapter both men are praying, 00:47:05.18\00:47:09.16 Abraham is praying for his nephew. 00:47:09.17\00:47:10.85 He is pleading Lord save my nephew. 00:47:10.86\00:47:13.98 Will you destroy? Please have mercy. 00:47:13.99\00:47:16.17 Please, please, 50, 45, 30, 20, 00:47:16.18\00:47:19.22 and he is pleading, pleading, pleading, 00:47:19.23\00:47:20.96 he is pleading on the behalf of someone else. 00:47:20.97\00:47:24.41 Gentlemen how many of our prayers 00:47:24.42\00:47:26.00 are for someone else and ourselves. 00:47:26.01\00:47:28.67 Here Lot in Chapter 19 is also pleading 00:47:28.68\00:47:31.38 with the Lord but who is he pleading for? 00:47:31.39\00:47:33.81 He is pleading for himself. 00:47:34.89\00:47:36.07 He is like Lord I can't go to the mountain. 00:47:36.08\00:47:38.32 It's too far away. 00:47:38.33\00:47:39.49 Let me go to this little city. It's a little city. 00:47:39.50\00:47:41.60 Lord, please let me go to the city. 00:47:41.61\00:47:42.58 It's such a little small thing to pray for? 00:47:42.59\00:47:45.61 It's so selfish. Say the Lord 00:47:45.62\00:47:48.46 my nail was broken, please heal my nail. 00:47:48.47\00:47:50.54 My nail is so painful, whereas someone is praying. 00:47:50.55\00:47:52.64 Lord may he be healed of cancer. 00:47:52.65\00:47:55.80 And he is talking for his nail to heal. 00:47:55.81\00:47:58.21 Here we see selfish intersession 00:48:00.70\00:48:02.41 mixed with mediation for someone else behalf. 00:48:02.42\00:48:06.93 In the end, now I ask you to turn to 00:48:08.22\00:48:10.21 Second Peter chapter 2. 00:48:10.22\00:48:12.26 Second Peter chapter 2, and in a New Testament, 00:48:12.27\00:48:16.30 and today I have been very rough on Lot. 00:48:16.31\00:48:19.37 But the New Testament treats him a little bit differently. 00:48:19.38\00:48:22.13 Second Peter Chapter 2, Chapter 2 verse 7, 8 and 9. 00:48:22.14\00:48:29.23 Chapter 2 verse 7, 8 and 9, "God delivered just Lot," 00:48:31.38\00:48:37.60 not just that does not mean only Lot 00:48:37.61\00:48:39.03 means that it is just one, just Lot, 00:48:39.04\00:48:42.08 "Vexed with the filthy conversation 00:48:42.09\00:48:44.36 or the conduct of the wicked." 00:48:44.37\00:48:46.75 For that righteous man welling among them, 00:48:46.76\00:48:49.92 in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul 00:48:49.93\00:48:53.09 from day to day with their unlawful deeds. 00:48:53.10\00:48:56.32 The Lord knows how to deliver the Godly out of," what? 00:48:56.33\00:49:00.51 "Temptations, and to reserve the unjust 00:49:00.52\00:49:03.31 unto the day of judgment to be punished". 00:49:03.32\00:49:05.58 Here we see two men, two examples 00:49:07.02\00:49:10.39 one is the father of faith and he is competent. 00:49:10.40\00:49:13.25 Is he a perfect man? Not by any means 00:49:13.26\00:49:15.89 we will see it later on in Genesis 12-22, 00:49:15.90\00:49:18.26 he had some other problems. 00:49:18.27\00:49:19.50 But in comparing him to Lot he is a man of prayer, 00:49:20.75\00:49:24.29 man of competence, man to get things done. 00:49:24.30\00:49:27.21 He commanded his family, 00:49:27.22\00:49:30.16 and he was a righteous man praying for other people. 00:49:30.17\00:49:33.27 On the flipside, Lot was a selfish little boy. 00:49:33.28\00:49:37.11 He took the best for himself. 00:49:37.12\00:49:39.13 He was a minimal hospitaliarian. 00:49:39.14\00:49:44.62 He was not a nice guy. 00:49:44.63\00:49:48.89 He prayed for himself. He wined. 00:49:52.18\00:49:55.13 His family members made fun of him, and he was not a man. 00:49:55.14\00:49:58.89 But despite that in chapter two of Peter, 00:50:00.18\00:50:03.53 the Bible says for that righteous man 00:50:03.54\00:50:06.03 dwelling amongst them and seeing and hearing, 00:50:06.04\00:50:08.25 vexed his righteous soul. And here is the point. 00:50:08.26\00:50:11.90 Gentlemen, you may not be a perfect man, 00:50:11.91\00:50:15.01 well none of us in the room are. 00:50:15.02\00:50:17.52 But are you sighing and crying because of the 00:50:17.53\00:50:20.90 conditions of the world around us? 00:50:20.91\00:50:22.93 Are you vexing your soul because 00:50:24.02\00:50:25.88 the temptations around us are evil? 00:50:25.89\00:50:28.52 Are you grasping the cross of Jesus 00:50:28.53\00:50:30.69 because this world is too hard to survive? 00:50:30.70\00:50:34.58 A true man is not someone who can wither this world. 00:50:34.59\00:50:38.39 The true man is someone who takes up the cross 00:50:38.40\00:50:41.29 and lives in this world by cleaning onto the cross. 00:50:41.30\00:50:44.79 A true man is someone who is humble enough 00:50:46.14\00:50:50.38 to ask help from only one person, 00:50:50.39\00:50:53.14 to get directions from only one person, 00:50:53.15\00:50:56.03 to use GPS from only one satellite source. 00:50:56.04\00:50:59.07 That is who? It's Jesus Christ. 00:50:59.08\00:51:02.10 Today you have come here because 00:51:02.11\00:51:03.92 Michigan Men of Faith convocation 00:51:03.93\00:51:05.38 and you shall, blew ha, ha, ha, and what not. 00:51:05.39\00:51:08.26 Do you understand the 00:51:10.06\00:51:11.06 repercussions of this conversation? 00:51:11.07\00:51:12.69 If the men of this conference start becoming sanctified, 00:51:14.10\00:51:19.21 start changing into image of the masculine son, 00:51:19.22\00:51:22.82 and starting embodying principles of masculinity, 00:51:22.83\00:51:26.56 of fatherhood, families will be changed. Amen. 00:51:26.57\00:51:31.73 Commit mistakes, so be it, 00:51:31.74\00:51:33.23 the Lord takes care of the past. Amen. 00:51:33.24\00:51:35.86 But from today do resolve to be more like 00:51:35.87\00:51:38.96 Abraham in light of Christ than instead of Lot. 00:51:38.97\00:51:43.09 And if you are Lot, are you 00:51:43.10\00:51:44.58 vexing your soul like Peter is talking about? 00:51:44.59\00:51:48.22 Once families are changed, Churches will change. 00:51:48.23\00:51:53.04 Deacons will change. Elders will change. 00:51:53.05\00:51:56.59 And once churches change, this country will change. 00:51:56.60\00:52:01.62 Once this country changes the world will change. 00:52:01.63\00:52:06.54 The Gospel work will change. It all starts from here, 00:52:06.55\00:52:11.97 from people of XY genes hanging up together. 00:52:11.98\00:52:16.55 The Kinesthetic potential for the world work 00:52:16.56\00:52:19.25 of the Gospel is in this room. 00:52:19.26\00:52:22.65 And it doesn't matter if you don't have a wife or a child, 00:52:22.66\00:52:25.16 or if you're not a brother or a son or what not. 00:52:25.17\00:52:27.55 It's because you're a male. 00:52:27.56\00:52:30.71 It's not because you are superior. 00:52:30.72\00:52:32.33 The Lord has a different work 00:52:32.34\00:52:34.79 and a customized work for women. 00:52:34.80\00:52:36.22 Amen.
