00:27:06.97\00:27:08.60 Amen. 00:27:08.61\00:27:11.64 With colleagues at Southwestern Adventist University 00:27:11.65\00:27:14.63 and Southern Adventist University, 00:27:14.64\00:27:17.07 I have been working on a special research project 00:27:17.08\00:27:19.48 for the last 12 years. 00:27:19.49\00:27:22.10 The goal is to explain what happened to 25,000 dinosaurs 00:27:22.11\00:27:29.37 each 30-40 feet long, whose bones ended up 00:27:29.38\00:27:33.71 on what is now a cattle ranch in Eastern Wyoming. 00:27:33.72\00:27:38.81 Each summer, during the month of June, 00:27:38.82\00:27:41.34 we traveled to Wyoming, 00:27:41.35\00:27:43.50 where we excavated thousands or more bones. 00:27:43.51\00:27:47.03 We returned them to 00:27:47.04\00:27:48.01 Southwestern Adventist University 00:27:48.02\00:27:50.05 where we processed them and clean them and label them, 00:27:50.06\00:27:53.33 and colloid them, curate them into our collection. 00:27:53.34\00:27:57.73 And I will be say more about that directly. 00:27:57.74\00:28:01.17 In 2002, I received word from a teacher 00:28:01.18\00:28:03.95 at Trinity Christian Academy, 00:28:03.96\00:28:06.53 an exclusive Christian school in Dallas, 00:28:06.54\00:28:09.63 asking about the possibilities of joining us 00:28:09.64\00:28:12.09 on our dinosaur research project for a few days. 00:28:12.10\00:28:18.16 We assured them that we would be happy 00:28:18.17\00:28:20.06 to have them and discuss the logistics. 00:28:20.07\00:28:23.55 The leader told me, he would want to come first 00:28:23.56\00:28:26.97 and check things out. 00:28:26.98\00:28:30.14 After all, these were Seventh-day Adventists 00:28:30.15\00:28:33.85 and they were strange people. Amen. 00:28:33.86\00:28:38.22 They came, they checked this out very carefully 00:28:38.23\00:28:42.60 and they were stunned to find that we were friendly, 00:28:42.61\00:28:46.09 spiritually minded Christians 00:28:46.10\00:28:48.62 and we're accommodating rather than indoctrinating. 00:28:48.63\00:28:52.04 Amen. 00:28:52.05\00:28:53.65 And they've been coming ever since. 00:28:53.66\00:28:57.31 Each summer they bring 20 medical school students 00:28:57.32\00:29:01.02 to learn what dinosaurs are and to learn 00:29:01.03\00:29:03.55 what Seventh-day Adventist are as a subtext. 00:29:03.56\00:29:08.61 Each year they leave with 20 students 00:29:08.62\00:29:10.69 whose lives have been influenced for the better. 00:29:10.70\00:29:13.66 In the words of the father of one of these students, 00:29:13.67\00:29:16.45 a prominent Dallas businessman, 00:29:16.46\00:29:19.44 who stopped by my office three years 00:29:19.45\00:29:21.80 after his son had come to the dinosaur project. 00:29:21.81\00:29:25.34 He said that experience changes my son's life. 00:29:25.35\00:29:29.94 I cannot thank you enough 00:29:29.95\00:29:31.87 for what you have done for him. 00:29:31.88\00:29:35.81 Why do I tell you this? 00:29:35.82\00:29:38.98 These fellow Christians were looking for a scientist 00:29:38.99\00:29:43.42 with genuinely open minds, 00:29:43.43\00:29:45.53 people who are willing to consider all the evidence. 00:29:45.54\00:29:48.88 They were thrilled to find teachers 00:29:48.89\00:29:51.41 who challenged Darwin. 00:29:51.42\00:29:53.43 They were pleased to discover 00:29:53.44\00:29:55.51 real scientists doing real research, 00:29:55.52\00:29:57.89 who affirmed the recent creation in six literal days, 00:29:57.90\00:30:01.91 not evolution over millions of years. 00:30:01.92\00:30:05.08 They wanted to hear the evidence 00:30:05.09\00:30:06.53 for worldwide catastrophic flood. 00:30:06.54\00:30:10.00 And we were happy to oblige them. 00:30:10.01\00:30:14.30 Seventh-day Adventist schools everywhere 00:30:14.31\00:30:16.43 have the opportunity to present the sort of education 00:30:16.44\00:30:19.95 that will capture the attention of people 00:30:19.96\00:30:22.24 like these teachers and students 00:30:22.25\00:30:23.90 from Trinity Christian Academy. 00:30:23.91\00:30:27.07 If we do, we really can be educational leaders. 00:30:27.08\00:30:31.92 Now it's not the time to back off. Amen. 00:30:31.93\00:30:35.96 To apologize or to keep silent, 00:30:35.97\00:30:40.95 but maybe you're not yet certain 00:30:40.96\00:30:42.79 that creation is that important. 00:30:42.80\00:30:45.41 After all a lot of really intelligent people 00:30:45.42\00:30:48.84 deny the Biblical account, and some of them 00:30:48.85\00:30:52.06 even make fun of the idea of believing what the Bible says. 00:30:52.07\00:30:56.97 Let's take a quick look at what's at stake in this. 00:30:56.98\00:31:02.12 This past year I went through the whole Bible, 00:31:02.13\00:31:04.10 beginning with Genesis and ending with Revelation, 00:31:04.11\00:31:07.57 looking for texts that have to do with creation. 00:31:07.58\00:31:11.64 I found 22 pages of single spaced texts 00:31:11.65\00:31:16.54 that talk about creation and the creator God. 00:31:16.55\00:31:20.37 Twenty six books cover this topic and some of them, 00:31:20.38\00:31:24.57 this is a major theme for the book. 00:31:24.58\00:31:29.52 But what is its importance to us? 00:31:29.53\00:31:32.26 Why does it matter so much? 00:31:32.27\00:31:36.14 Number one, the basis of our worship 00:31:36.15\00:31:40.38 is explained in Revelation 4:11, 00:31:40.39\00:31:43.86 where we read that the 24 elders 00:31:43.87\00:31:45.79 fell down to worship God saying, 00:31:45.80\00:31:49.44 "You are worthy, O God, and I love these words, 00:31:54.15\00:31:57.65 to receive glory and honor and power. 00:31:57.66\00:32:02.09 For you created all things and by your will they exist 00:32:02.10\00:32:07.21 and were created." 00:32:07.22\00:32:08.52 Amen. Creation is fundamental to worship. 00:32:08.53\00:32:12.03 Even a Paul says in Romans 1:20-25, 00:32:12.04\00:32:16.16 For since the creation of the world 00:32:16.17\00:32:18.70 His invisible attributes are clearly seen, 00:32:18.71\00:32:21.54 being understood by the things that are made. 00:32:21.55\00:32:24.34 Even His eternal power and God head, 00:32:24.35\00:32:26.46 so that they are without excuse. 00:32:26.47\00:32:28.81 Because, although they knew God, 00:32:28.82\00:32:30.44 they did not glorify Him as God, 00:32:30.45\00:32:33.41 nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts. 00:32:33.42\00:32:37.51 Their foolish hearts were darkened. 00:32:37.52\00:32:39.28 Professing themselves to be wise, 00:32:39.29\00:32:41.90 they became fools, 00:32:41.91\00:32:43.81 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God. 00:32:43.82\00:32:46.61 What is the glory of God? 00:32:46.62\00:32:48.29 That's His creation, that's what makes Him God. 00:32:48.30\00:32:52.23 Changed him into an image made like corruptible man, 00:32:52.24\00:32:56.36 and birds, and four footed beasts, and creeping things. 00:32:56.37\00:33:01.05 You ever seen that story before. 00:33:01.06\00:33:04.99 Therefore God gave them up to uncleanness, 00:33:05.00\00:33:07.72 in the lust of their hearts, 00:33:07.73\00:33:08.90 to dishonor their bodies among themselves. 00:33:08.91\00:33:11.40 Who changed the truth of God, His creatorship into a lie, 00:33:11.41\00:33:16.83 and worshiped and served the creature 00:33:16.84\00:33:21.89 rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. 00:33:21.90\00:33:25.18 You see that. 00:33:25.19\00:33:26.24 Worship is due to who created you. 00:33:26.25\00:33:32.34 That's the basis, the biblical basis for worship is creation. 00:33:32.35\00:33:37.71 If we evolve then worship is due to our ancestors, 00:33:37.72\00:33:42.25 man, and birds, and four-footed things and creeping things. 00:33:42.26\00:33:49.44 Thus, if God did not create us as He said He did, 00:33:49.45\00:33:52.67 we have no basis for worshiping Him. 00:33:52.68\00:33:58.00 Not only worship, but our salvation is laid out 00:33:58.01\00:34:01.02 in terms of creation. 00:34:01.03\00:34:02.83 One of my favorite texts for this, 00:34:02.84\00:34:04.49 there are many in the Bible 00:34:04.50\00:34:05.49 that connect it to as Isaiah 43:1, 00:34:05.50\00:34:08.57 which I imagine many of you know. 00:34:08.58\00:34:11.42 "Thus says the Lord, he who created you, 00:34:11.43\00:34:13.47 O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel, creation: 00:34:13.48\00:34:19.06 Fear not, for I have redeemed you, 00:34:19.07\00:34:23.23 I have called you by your name, 00:34:23.24\00:34:25.60 and you are mine, creation, redemption." 00:34:25.61\00:34:32.05 Without the Genesis story of a perfect creation 00:34:32.06\00:34:35.11 on a perfect earth, without the story in Genesis 00:34:35.12\00:34:40.12 of a perfect creation and a perfect earth, 00:34:40.13\00:34:43.86 with the subsequent fall leading to death, 00:34:43.87\00:34:48.82 responsibility for sin, rest with God who chose to make man 00:34:48.83\00:34:53.46 by the process of evolution with sin and death 00:34:53.47\00:34:56.33 and undergo a necessary part of the process. 00:34:56.34\00:35:01.67 That takes away entirely the need for a sacrifice 00:35:01.68\00:35:07.05 as a remedy for sin, given to us who are holy 00:35:07.06\00:35:11.49 and worthy by a loving Savior. 00:35:11.50\00:35:16.59 Without the story of Genesis, 00:35:16.60\00:35:20.25 without a perfect six day of creation, 00:35:20.26\00:35:22.97 we have no hope of redemption. 00:35:22.98\00:35:26.11 Not only worship and salvation, but the whole concept of God, 00:35:26.12\00:35:30.53 who God is and whether his word is trustworthy 00:35:30.54\00:35:33.48 is invested in the Fourth Commandment. 00:35:33.49\00:35:36.45 In Exodus 31, that's not normally 00:35:36.46\00:35:39.05 where we turn for the story, 00:35:39.06\00:35:40.98 but listen to what it says there, 00:35:40.99\00:35:43.51 "The Lord spoke unto Moses, saying, 00:35:43.52\00:35:45.23 For in six days the Lord made heavens and earth 00:35:45.24\00:35:48.65 and on the seventh day, he rested and was refreshed. 00:35:48.66\00:35:52.52 And when he had made an end 00:35:52.53\00:35:55.21 of speaking with him on Mount Sinai. 00:35:55.22\00:35:58.26 He gave Moses two tablets of stone 00:35:58.27\00:36:03.51 written with the finger of God. 00:36:03.52\00:36:08.66 Consider what this passage is saying, 00:36:08.67\00:36:11.27 God wrote with His own finger in the tablet of stone, 00:36:11.28\00:36:17.72 He wrote that He had created the earth in six days. 00:36:17.73\00:36:22.47 It seems to me if God did not create in six literal days, 00:36:22.48\00:36:25.82 that He said He did, and wrote it with His finger 00:36:25.83\00:36:29.15 in a table of stone, that would make God 00:36:29.16\00:36:31.45 deliberately deceitful. 00:36:31.46\00:36:36.85 If that were the case, what hope do we have 00:36:36.86\00:36:39.56 that other things He said are reliable? 00:36:39.57\00:36:43.42 Or perhaps God did really say that or write it in stone, 00:36:43.43\00:36:46.65 perhaps Moses made the story up, 00:36:46.66\00:36:49.44 that God created the earth in six days. 00:36:49.45\00:36:52.11 But Moses was lying, then what hope do we have 00:36:52.12\00:36:54.92 that other things Moses wrote are true in that case. 00:36:54.93\00:36:58.86 You're only reading of that passage 00:36:58.87\00:37:00.47 that does justice to God 00:37:00.48\00:37:02.14 and His integrity is a straight forward one. 00:37:02.15\00:37:05.03 He told us precisely what He had done 00:37:05.04\00:37:08.13 and then he edged it indelibly in rock with his own finger. 00:37:08.14\00:37:14.24 So the doctrine of creation 00:37:14.25\00:37:15.64 is not just one among many important beliefs. 00:37:15.65\00:37:20.29 Creation is about as fundamental as it gets, 00:37:20.30\00:37:23.88 creation is the foundation of our faith. 00:37:23.89\00:37:28.89 Students of Daniel, Revelation know that the remnant church 00:37:28.90\00:37:32.62 is called into existence at the very time in earth's history 00:37:32.63\00:37:36.06 when a major new apostasy arises concerning origins. 00:37:36.07\00:37:40.96 Amen. 00:37:40.97\00:37:42.34 God's remedy was to bring into being a group of believers, 00:37:42.35\00:37:45.50 whose name Seventh-day Adventist 00:37:45.51\00:37:49.23 emphasizes two cardinal doctrines. 00:37:49.24\00:37:52.28 Christ's soon return and God's creatorship. 00:37:52.29\00:37:57.59 Saying with a loud voice, 00:37:57.60\00:37:59.34 Fear God, and give glory to him, 00:37:59.35\00:38:02.41 for the hour of his judgment is come. 00:38:02.42\00:38:04.56 That's His soon coming. 00:38:04.57\00:38:06.88 Judgment is not bad news, it's good news, 00:38:06.89\00:38:09.66 it means Jesus is coming back and worship him. 00:38:09.67\00:38:15.46 Worship has to do with Sabbath, 00:38:15.47\00:38:17.39 Sabbath has to do with creation, 00:38:17.40\00:38:19.60 Him who made the heaven, and the earth, and the seas, 00:38:19.61\00:38:23.01 and the fountains of waters. 00:38:23.02\00:38:25.32 So what really happened in October of 1844? 00:38:25.33\00:38:32.30 This audience knows all about the Millerite movement, 00:38:32.31\00:38:35.53 the great disappointment, 00:38:35.54\00:38:37.26 the new understanding of the heavenly sanctuary 00:38:37.27\00:38:40.03 discovered by our spiritual four bearers. 00:38:40.04\00:38:42.43 I don't have to tell you about the beginning 00:38:42.44\00:38:45.32 of the investigative judgment. 00:38:45.33\00:38:49.03 But another profoundly important event occurred 00:38:49.04\00:38:52.31 at the same time, possibly the same day, 00:38:52.32\00:38:57.41 foreseeing the wording of Revelation 10:5 and 6, 00:38:57.42\00:39:02.20 if you compare that text with the parallel text 00:39:02.21\00:39:05.44 in Daniel chapter 12 verse 7, you'll see that 00:39:05.45\00:39:08.41 there is something added, 00:39:08.42\00:39:09.84 that is very timely in the Revelation text. 00:39:09.85\00:39:13.97 "The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and the land," 00:39:13.98\00:39:16.91 this is Revelation 10:5 and 6, 00:39:16.92\00:39:19.93 "raised his hand to heaven, 00:39:19.94\00:39:21.31 And swore by him who lives for ever and ever, 00:39:21.32\00:39:25.35 who created the heaven, and the things that are in it, 00:39:25.36\00:39:28.61 and the earth and the things that are in it, 00:39:28.62\00:39:30.58 and the sea and the things that are in it, 00:39:30.59\00:39:33.70 that there should be time no longer." 00:39:33.71\00:39:36.38 That text about God's creatorship 00:39:36.39\00:39:39.07 is not in the parallel passage in Daniel. 00:39:39.08\00:39:42.56 That was added here in Revelation, 00:39:42.57\00:39:44.21 because this was the time of the great deception on origins. 00:39:44.22\00:39:51.43 In 2009, the scientific world is marking 00:39:51.44\00:39:56.08 the 150th anniversary of the publication 00:39:56.09\00:40:00.02 of the Charles Darwin's book, 00:40:00.03\00:40:02.14 "the Origin of Species." 00:40:02.15\00:40:04.31 But most people are utterly unaware of a blockbuster 00:40:04.32\00:40:09.78 of a book that came out 15 years earlier 00:40:09.79\00:40:14.04 in Mid-October, 1844. 00:40:14.05\00:40:19.79 The book was entitled 00:40:19.80\00:40:21.10 "Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation," 00:40:21.11\00:40:24.10 it was written and published anonymously 00:40:24.11\00:40:26.19 by Robert Chambers, a British bookseller. 00:40:26.20\00:40:29.71 In this 400 page book, it gave a comprehensive 00:40:29.72\00:40:33.02 account of the origin of the universe, 00:40:33.03\00:40:36.00 the origin of life and even the origin 00:40:36.01\00:40:38.07 of human beings without a God. 00:40:38.08\00:40:41.34 In a completely materialistic framework. 00:40:41.35\00:40:44.51 This book was the first deliberate promotion 00:40:44.52\00:40:47.74 of a Godless theory of origins. 00:40:47.75\00:40:51.10 And it came out in Mid-October, 1844. 00:40:51.11\00:40:56.37 The book was an instant success, 00:40:56.38\00:40:58.92 selling over 20,000 copies in seven editions 00:40:58.93\00:41:02.06 during the first 10 years, making it perhaps 00:41:02.07\00:41:04.73 the best selling book of the whole 19th century. 00:41:04.74\00:41:08.48 It was widely distributed on the continent, 00:41:08.49\00:41:11.26 it was read by poets and statesmen like. 00:41:11.27\00:41:14.68 Abraham Lincoln and Queen Victoria 00:41:14.69\00:41:18.03 both had read the book. 00:41:18.04\00:41:20.89 Physicist Sir David Brewster warned that this book 00:41:20.90\00:41:24.08 "Vestiges" stood a "fair chance of poisoning 00:41:24.09\00:41:27.15 the fountains of science, 00:41:27.16\00:41:28.76 and sapping the foundations of religion." 00:41:28.77\00:41:33.07 Darwin himself, who in July of 1844 had finished 00:41:33.08\00:41:36.35 the manuscript and committed it to publication, 00:41:36.36\00:41:40.53 he was fearful, he was devastate about the publication 00:41:40.54\00:41:44.16 of "Vestiges" thinking he had had lost his chance 00:41:44.17\00:41:46.72 to get credit for the ideas he thought he deserved. 00:41:46.73\00:41:51.30 A modern historian James Secord recently has written 00:41:51.31\00:41:54.34 a treatise on Chamber's book, published in 2000. 00:41:54.35\00:41:58.38 In the following passage he spells out the sense 00:41:58.39\00:42:00.91 of the importance of this work 00:42:00.92\00:42:02.99 in changing peoples' minds about evolution. 00:42:03.00\00:42:05.57 Where did the change take place? 00:42:05.58\00:42:07.78 We often think it's Charles Darwin, 00:42:07.79\00:42:09.34 but listen to this. 00:42:09.35\00:42:10.70 He says, "How did evolution 00:42:10.71\00:42:13.29 gain this pivotal role in the public arena? 00:42:13.30\00:42:16.79 The answer turns out to have little to do 00:42:16.80\00:42:19.28 with Darwinian biology, little to do with Darwinian biology 00:42:19.29\00:42:24.71 or Big Bang astronomy. 00:42:24.72\00:42:26.84 Instead, the critical period 00:42:26.85\00:42:28.34 is the first half of the nineteenth century, 00:42:28.35\00:42:31.55 and the turning point is the response of readers to Vestiges, 00:42:31.56\00:42:36.61 the turning point is what? 00:42:36.62\00:42:39.48 Response of readers to this book published 00:42:39.49\00:42:42.43 in Mid-October, 1844. 00:42:42.44\00:42:46.01 So that is what happened on earth in October, 1844. 00:42:46.02\00:42:50.81 God brought this people into existence 00:42:50.82\00:42:53.09 at the very time on end, this new apostasy 00:42:53.10\00:42:55.45 was thrust on the world. 00:42:55.46\00:42:57.65 We are here to be the repairs of that bridge, 00:42:57.66\00:43:00.44 that restores a pass to walk in. 00:43:00.45\00:43:03.79 What impact has this church had on the advance of evolution? 00:43:03.80\00:43:10.01 In 2004, I attended a special symposium 00:43:10.02\00:43:13.53 on creation and evolution, 00:43:13.54\00:43:15.65 sponsored by the Geological Society of America, 00:43:15.66\00:43:18.80 at their meeting in Denver. 00:43:18.81\00:43:21.52 It was a big deal, at this symposium, 00:43:21.53\00:43:25.58 two separate speakers were considering 00:43:25.59\00:43:29.31 the origin of the modern creation movement. 00:43:29.32\00:43:33.80 Both of them showed a picture on the screen 00:43:33.81\00:43:36.09 of the one person who'd done more to advance 00:43:36.10\00:43:38.90 creationism than any other in the year of evolution. 00:43:38.91\00:43:44.10 Whose picture do you supposed was on the screen? 00:43:44.11\00:43:48.71 Ellen G White, I was thrilled. 00:43:48.72\00:43:57.24 So what are we doing to promote creatorship of God? 00:43:57.25\00:44:02.63 We can certainly honor Him by accepting His word 00:44:02.64\00:44:05.30 on the basis of the confidence we have in Him. 00:44:05.31\00:44:08.40 We're told in Hebrews 1:3, 00:44:08.41\00:44:11.74 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed 00:44:11.75\00:44:14.51 by the word of God. 00:44:14.52\00:44:16.92 So that the things which are seen 00:44:16.93\00:44:18.49 were not made of things which are invisible. 00:44:18.50\00:44:21.10 That means that we have to do exercise faith 00:44:21.11\00:44:24.66 to believe in God's creatorship. 00:44:24.67\00:44:27.03 We ought to expect that, we ought to embrace it. 00:44:27.04\00:44:32.02 But we can do more, those of us who are scientists 00:44:32.03\00:44:35.50 can carry our experiments out to try to learn more about 00:44:35.51\00:44:38.10 the past history of the earth. 00:44:38.11\00:44:40.56 And shouldn't these experiments give additional 00:44:40.57\00:44:42.77 confidence to our understanding of God's word. 00:44:42.78\00:44:45.56 If we use the information in the Bible to guide us 00:44:45.57\00:44:48.62 as to what experiments might be interesting. 00:44:48.63\00:44:51.84 Who knows what results we might have 00:44:51.85\00:44:54.87 as God opens His treasure house as He promised in Deuteronomy. 00:44:54.88\00:45:01.06 A handful of Christians who are scientists, 00:45:01.07\00:45:06.37 nearly all of them Seventh-day Adventists have been 00:45:06.38\00:45:09.35 pursuing these goals for many years. 00:45:09.36\00:45:12.02 I'll try to give you a little sample of these operations. 00:45:12.03\00:45:18.06 I spent the month of May camped in a tent 00:45:18.07\00:45:22.67 in the deserts of Utah, 00:45:22.68\00:45:24.79 working with Dr. Leonard Brand, 00:45:24.80\00:45:26.66 Chair of the Division in Natural Sciences 00:45:26.67\00:45:28.49 at Loma Linda University and his students. 00:45:28.50\00:45:31.96 On a project designed to look 00:45:31.97\00:45:33.72 through the entire geological column, 00:45:33.73\00:45:36.56 to see what we can learn about time and process. 00:45:36.57\00:45:39.73 To see if the rocks tell us millions of years 00:45:39.74\00:45:42.39 or tell us something about rapid sudden sedimentation. 00:45:42.40\00:45:46.22 We have long suspected that the rock record 00:45:46.23\00:45:48.79 was not being read correctly by standard geologists. 00:45:48.80\00:45:52.59 But now we were examining it with quantitative tools 00:45:52.60\00:45:56.02 that will allow us to say something specific. 00:45:56.03\00:45:59.30 I could share a fascinating progress report with me 00:45:59.31\00:46:02.09 if we have time, with you if we have time. 00:46:02.10\00:46:05.07 But now I can say that we are finding many indications 00:46:05.08\00:46:08.37 that there were inconsistencies 00:46:08.38\00:46:10.00 between the standard long age model 00:46:10.01\00:46:12.86 and what we are seeing in the field. 00:46:12.87\00:46:15.67 Although it maybe sometime 00:46:15.68\00:46:16.99 before we can properly prepare and publish this data. 00:46:17.00\00:46:21.09 We will not hesitate to share it with our church family. 00:46:21.10\00:46:27.71 I spent the month of June in a tent camped 00:46:27.72\00:46:31.69 in a remote region of eastern Wyoming, 00:46:31.70\00:46:34.27 in the least populated county, 00:46:34.28\00:46:36.40 in the least populated state in the United states, 00:46:36.41\00:46:39.51 where we've been excavating 00:46:39.52\00:46:40.91 the remains of dinosaurs for over 12 years. 00:46:40.92\00:46:44.78 We first began this project with an invitation 00:46:44.79\00:46:47.46 of an affordable Christian gentleman, rancher, 00:46:47.47\00:46:51.23 who wanted the resources of his ranch to be used for science. 00:46:51.24\00:46:57.33 A secular paleontologist had been working on the ranch 00:46:57.34\00:47:01.08 and when the ranch owner told him 00:47:01.09\00:47:03.50 that he wanted him to share the idea of creation 00:47:03.51\00:47:06.94 with the young people he was bringing out 00:47:06.95\00:47:08.72 to show dinosaurs to on his ranch. 00:47:08.73\00:47:12.47 The secular paleontologist was incensed 00:47:12.48\00:47:16.49 that he would have to say something about creation. 00:47:16.50\00:47:19.01 He didn't even say, he couldn't talk about evolution, 00:47:19.02\00:47:21.33 he just says, I want you to tell them about creation. 00:47:21.34\00:47:26.43 He laughed and as he laughed, 00:47:26.44\00:47:28.00 he shouted over his shoulder, 00:47:28.01\00:47:29.18 this is the last day that science will be done 00:47:29.19\00:47:31.44 on the Hanson Ranch. 00:47:31.45\00:47:33.49 And he had hear one of his students had scrolled 00:47:33.50\00:47:36.27 the same sentiment on a shack, 00:47:36.28\00:47:38.58 they left behind in the spray paint. 00:47:38.59\00:47:43.54 That was the challenge we didn't take lightly. 00:47:43.55\00:47:47.02 With the help of God we set out to do excellence science, 00:47:47.03\00:47:50.73 there would be a credit to the God we worship 00:47:50.74\00:47:52.86 and to the church we serve. 00:47:52.87\00:47:56.07 It is risky to links small plans with a big God. 00:47:56.08\00:48:01.85 He has taken us far beyond our aspirations 00:48:01.86\00:48:04.52 and enabled us to pioneer new technologies 00:48:04.53\00:48:07.59 involving high resolution GPS. 00:48:07.60\00:48:11.08 That we can map the bones in the core 00:48:11.09\00:48:13.36 and built virtual queries in our computers, 00:48:13.37\00:48:16.24 reconstructions that have revolutionized 00:48:16.25\00:48:19.32 the way paleontology can be done. 00:48:19.33\00:48:22.52 We can view in the computer, 00:48:22.53\00:48:23.99 photographic images of our queries 00:48:24.00\00:48:26.44 with all the bones in place, even after the bones 00:48:26.45\00:48:28.92 have been physically removed. 00:48:28.93\00:48:33.47 As a result, paleontologists can now do something 00:48:33.48\00:48:37.31 that they've always dreamed of. 00:48:37.32\00:48:38.66 Which is to see what the bones look like in the ground. 00:48:38.67\00:48:42.54 We've presented our results yearly and meetings 00:48:42.55\00:48:45.18 at the Geological Society of America 00:48:45.19\00:48:47.69 and at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontologists. 00:48:47.70\00:48:52.25 Four years later after we began, 00:48:52.26\00:48:55.21 we were having lunch with colleagues, 00:48:55.22\00:48:57.59 including a, the head paleontologist 00:48:57.60\00:49:00.84 with the Los Angeles County Museum. 00:49:00.85\00:49:04.23 And when he found out where we were working. 00:49:04.24\00:49:08.28 We were surprised, he seemed to know all about us. 00:49:08.29\00:49:12.12 His comment was, 00:49:12.13\00:49:13.85 I hear that you're doing good work out there. 00:49:13.86\00:49:18.18 The word good is circulating about us, 00:49:18.19\00:49:21.57 in spite of the fact that these secular paleontologists 00:49:21.58\00:49:24.21 know we are believers in the biblical 00:49:24.22\00:49:25.83 account of origins and the global flood. 00:49:25.84\00:49:28.41 Amen. That's not all. 00:49:28.42\00:49:31.28 With my colleagues, we determined 00:49:31.29\00:49:32.88 that the bones we excavated were not going to end up 00:49:32.89\00:49:35.87 in a musky basement somewhere 00:49:35.88\00:49:38.17 as often happens with such things. 00:49:38.18\00:49:40.87 We developed an online museum to present our findings 00:49:40.88\00:49:44.79 to the paleontological community. 00:49:44.80\00:49:47.32 Within six years we had the largest collection of fossil, 00:49:47.33\00:49:51.49 dinosaur fossils on the Internet. 00:49:51.50\00:49:53.70 The only collection on the Internet 00:49:53.71\00:49:55.80 that had pictures of all the bones. 00:49:55.81\00:49:59.42 We thought we would list our museum. 00:49:59.43\00:50:02.23 We were quite proud of it, 00:50:02.24\00:50:04.97 on a government funded site 00:50:04.98\00:50:06.71 run by University of California, Berkeley, 00:50:06.72\00:50:09.17 whose stated goal was to represent online 00:50:09.18\00:50:12.86 all sites with fossil content. 00:50:12.87\00:50:15.94 Although the Berkeley site contained many links, 00:50:15.95\00:50:19.71 some of them were nothing more than 00:50:19.72\00:50:21.24 Joel Smith's homepage with a couple pictures of fossils. 00:50:21.25\00:50:26.31 I send our URL in any way and shortly, 00:50:26.32\00:50:29.18 after received the letter saying 00:50:29.19\00:50:31.57 that they had accepted our museum 00:50:31.58\00:50:33.02 and it will be represented there. 00:50:33.03\00:50:35.86 I waited a week or so and then try to find it online, 00:50:35.87\00:50:41.34 it didn't show up. 00:50:41.35\00:50:42.84 So I wrote asking where the link was. 00:50:42.85\00:50:48.89 To my astonishment they said, 00:50:48.90\00:50:51.88 we were not suppose to have said 00:50:51.89\00:50:53.60 your site was accepted. 00:50:53.61\00:50:56.07 It is still out for review. 00:50:56.08\00:50:59.65 There months later, I got a rejection notice, 00:50:59.66\00:51:05.99 saying that our site was 00:51:06.00\00:51:07.55 neither scientific nor educational, 00:51:07.56\00:51:12.92 it was a clear enablement case of discrimination against us 00:51:12.93\00:51:16.02 because of our personal belief in a creator God. 00:51:16.03\00:51:18.83 Nothing on our site advertised anything of our beliefs, 00:51:18.84\00:51:22.75 but the whole community knows 00:51:22.76\00:51:24.27 that we are creationists. Praise God. Amen. 00:51:24.28\00:51:28.37 We had pioneered in the field of online museums, 00:51:28.38\00:51:32.07 our website had the largest collection 00:51:32.08\00:51:34.34 of dinosaur bones on the Internet. 00:51:34.35\00:51:36.45 And the only such site with photographs of all the bones, 00:51:36.46\00:51:40.22 but we were not scientific or educational. 00:51:40.23\00:51:44.73 To put it mildly, I was not pleased. 00:51:44.74\00:51:49.21 But I was determined to do even more 00:51:49.22\00:51:51.11 than the secular museum sites were doing. 00:51:51.12\00:51:54.50 Since that time we have developed techniques 00:51:54.51\00:51:57.63 for producing 3D virtual reality images of the bones. 00:51:57.64\00:52:02.78 In addition to the photographs, 00:52:02.79\00:52:04.35 you can now see thousands of 3D images 00:52:04.36\00:52:08.05 that you can take your mouse and rotate the bone around 00:52:08.06\00:52:10.99 and see it from all sides. 00:52:11.00\00:52:13.32 We gave a paper on this technique 00:52:13.33\00:52:15.60 at the Geological Society of America meetings. 00:52:15.61\00:52:20.21 We also since we have developed these virtual reality maps, 00:52:20.22\00:52:24.06 so we could see all the bones in the query. 00:52:24.07\00:52:26.60 We decided we would go one step further 00:52:26.61\00:52:29.35 and allow those who are visiting our site 00:52:29.36\00:52:31.81 to click on a button that will show them 00:52:31.82\00:52:33.94 where the bone they were looking out, 00:52:33.95\00:52:35.41 it was found in a query. 00:52:35.42\00:52:36.80 So you can now do that, any bone in the collection, 00:52:36.81\00:52:39.78 you can click on the map button, 00:52:39.79\00:52:42.07 it up comes the picture of the bone in the query 00:52:42.08\00:52:45.48 with all the bones that surround it. 00:52:45.49\00:52:47.53 No other museum site in the world, 00:52:55.01\00:52:57.29 no other museum site in the world has these features. 00:52:57.30\00:53:03.63 We went on to present two additional papers 00:53:03.64\00:53:06.41 at national meetings of the Geological Society of America. 00:53:06.42\00:53:09.89 We published the paper 00:53:09.90\00:53:11.33 in the symposium volume on our website. 00:53:11.34\00:53:14.09 We also have launched an educational site, 00:53:14.10\00:53:17.51 sharing in philosophically mutual terms, 00:53:17.52\00:53:21.17 the excitement and interest of dinosaurs. 00:53:21.18\00:53:23.19 So that students can learn about dinosaurs 00:53:23.20\00:53:25.78 without learning about millions of years in evolution. 00:53:25.79\00:53:29.39 This is for public school children as well as their own. 00:53:29.40\00:53:32.86 Many of you would enjoy visiting this site, 00:53:32.87\00:53:35.10 seeing some of the neat things that was there. 00:53:35.11\00:53:37.86 All these from bunch of creationists 00:53:37.87\00:53:39.89 of the small Seventh-day Adventist University in Texas. 00:53:39.90\00:53:45.34 By the way, if you want to go to these sites, 00:53:45.35\00:53:47.15 the address is (SWAU) 00:53:47.16\00:53:49.68 southwestern adventistuniversity.edu 00:53:49.69\00:53:53.30 and you can put in front of that either fossil 00:53:53.31\00:53:55.79 or dinosaur or dinodig, any one of those words 00:53:55.80\00:53:59.16 to go to one of these sites. 00:53:59.17\00:54:01.62 A dinosaur paleontologist, probably the best known 00:54:01.63\00:54:04.80 dinosaur authority in the world, 00:54:04.81\00:54:06.63 recently came to our campus to learn 00:54:06.64\00:54:08.83 how to map queries using the techniques we use. 00:54:08.84\00:54:11.95 While he was there, we showed him our museum site 00:54:11.96\00:54:14.56 and our educational site. 00:54:14.57\00:54:17.75 And he had with him the director 00:54:17.76\00:54:19.20 of one of the largest museums in the world. 00:54:19.21\00:54:22.84 His response in an e mail was the following. 00:54:22.85\00:54:26.00 He said, "I was astounded, 00:54:26.01\00:54:28.83 I have never seen before such precise 00:54:28.84\00:54:31.26 and comprehensive data management system 00:54:31.27\00:54:34.02 for paleontology and for the lab. 00:54:34.03\00:54:37.47 No other museum or university comes 00:54:37.48\00:54:39.55 close for dinosaur digs." 00:54:39.56\00:54:41.36 This is the guy that's been on major dinosaur 00:54:41.37\00:54:44.00 digs all over the world. 00:54:44.01\00:54:46.57 God has richly blessed us in this work. 00:54:46.58\00:54:48.85 It's a testimony to His name 00:54:48.86\00:54:50.74 that this recognition comes. Amen. 00:54:50.75\00:54:55.28 During the last two weeks just before I came here, 00:54:55.29\00:54:58.94 I was camped in a tent high above the Arctic Circle 00:54:58.95\00:55:02.34 where the sun circles the sky overhead 24 hours a day. 00:55:02.35\00:55:06.53 The temperature stayed is zero degrees 00:55:06.54\00:55:08.93 centigrade around the clock, 00:55:08.94\00:55:10.23 and magnetic compasses pointed anywhere but north. 00:55:10.24\00:55:13.58 We were looking at deposits that were supposed 00:55:13.59\00:55:16.57 to be 17 million years old. 00:55:16.58\00:55:19.48 These plants were unique, you could have build 00:55:19.49\00:55:22.52 a house out of the wood or burned it in your fireplaces. 00:55:22.53\00:55:25.74 We got cones, frozen cones out of permafrost 00:55:25.75\00:55:29.27 that we brought back to examine to see 00:55:29.28\00:55:31.63 whether we can get living cells out of them, 00:55:31.64\00:55:34.47 or whether we can extract DNA. 00:55:34.48\00:55:36.91 If we were successfully challenged, 00:55:36.92\00:55:39.26 the idea that these are 17 millions year old. 00:55:39.27\00:55:43.48 These are another projects of occupied 00:55:43.49\00:55:45.27 or attention for a professional lifetime. 00:55:45.28\00:55:48.31 We have found encouraging results from every project 00:55:48.32\00:55:51.34 we've undertaken, giving us data consisting 00:55:51.35\00:55:54.06 with our own model of earth history 00:55:54.07\00:55:55.83 and encouraging us to believe 00:55:55.84\00:55:57.54 that there are lots of our answers 00:55:57.55\00:55:59.21 out there yet to be found. Amen. 00:55:59.22\00:56:02.39 And we proved the biblical model of origins 00:56:02.40\00:56:05.12 and the global flood, correct? 00:56:05.13\00:56:07.95 No, but that was never our intent. 00:56:07.96\00:56:10.24 Science is not about proving things, 00:56:10.25\00:56:12.70 it's about testing ideas with experiments. 00:56:12.71\00:56:15.79 Ideas that correctly predict the outcomes of experiments 00:56:15.80\00:56:18.97 that haven't yet been done, or good ideas in science. 00:56:18.98\00:56:23.49 So far the biblical model of origins in a global flood 00:56:23.50\00:56:26.87 provides a very good model. 00:56:26.88\00:56:29.63
