Yeah. 00:07:49.50\00:07:52.23 Good. 00:07:52.27\00:07:54.10 Have you recovered from yesterday's seminar? 00:07:54.14\00:07:56.87 Yes. Right. 00:07:56.91\00:07:58.44 I told you that yesterday 00:07:58.47\00:07:59.81 was just the setup punch, right. 00:07:59.84\00:08:02.24 The knock out punch is today 00:08:02.28\00:08:04.61 and it looks like some of you 00:08:04.65\00:08:05.98 are just absolute gluttons for punishment. 00:08:06.01\00:08:08.12 You have chosen to come knowing good and well 00:08:11.42\00:08:15.12 that you will be afflicted in your comfortability, right, 00:08:15.16\00:08:18.69 your comfortness. 00:08:18.73\00:08:20.80 And I am looking forward to our presentation today, 00:08:20.83\00:08:23.20 as I said you yesterday 00:08:23.23\00:08:24.57 and I say this with complete transparency 00:08:24.60\00:08:26.37 and complete candor 00:08:26.40\00:08:28.34 that I have a real burden on my heart. 00:08:28.37\00:08:30.84 I have a huge burden on my heart 00:08:30.87\00:08:33.07 about the condition of our churches. 00:08:33.11\00:08:35.18 And you all said amen to that yesterday 00:08:35.21\00:08:37.31 and then I quickly reminded you that you are the churches. 00:08:37.35\00:08:39.48 Amen. Amen. 00:08:39.51\00:08:41.68 I am not talking about a roofing problem 00:08:41.72\00:08:43.22 or a carpet color, 00:08:43.25\00:08:44.59 I mean, we have some real issues 00:08:44.62\00:08:46.19 that we need to address in our churches. 00:08:46.22\00:08:47.99 And I think from my study of the word 00:08:48.02\00:08:51.39 that fundamental to many of the issues 00:08:51.43\00:08:53.56 that we are encountering 00:08:53.60\00:08:54.93 is that we have left the missionary spirit 00:08:54.96\00:08:57.80 for a mere membership model. 00:08:57.83\00:09:01.30 And that's what we are talking about. 00:09:01.34\00:09:03.57 As I said yesterday 00:09:03.61\00:09:04.94 and I make no apologies for this. 00:09:04.97\00:09:06.31 You could throw a hand grenade into many of our churches 00:09:06.34\00:09:07.74 and hit many members 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.01 but you may not hit a missionary. 00:09:10.05\00:09:12.45 And I think that should be a cause for concern 00:09:12.48\00:09:14.48 because as we learned yesterday, 00:09:14.52\00:09:16.02 "Every true disciple 00:09:16.05\00:09:19.35 is born into the kingdom of God," 00:09:19.39\00:09:22.96 as a what? 00:09:22.99\00:09:24.33 As a missionary. "As a missionary." 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.43 So that means that our churches should be filled, with what? 00:09:26.46\00:09:30.93 Missionaries. 00:09:30.97\00:09:32.30 Missionaries. 00:09:32.33\00:09:33.67 So let's pray together and let's pray 00:09:33.70\00:09:35.17 that God will give us 00:09:35.20\00:09:37.34 the spirit of not just looking at others 00:09:37.37\00:09:40.34 and the problems that they have, 00:09:40.38\00:09:42.14 not just looking at the corporate church 00:09:42.18\00:09:43.85 or even our own local church. 00:09:43.88\00:09:45.21 Let's pray that God will give us the spirit 00:09:45.25\00:09:46.58 of looking at ourselves, right. 00:09:46.61\00:09:50.32 It's very easy to see the great big beam 00:09:50.35\00:09:52.22 in someone else's eye. 00:09:52.25\00:09:54.09 But may be, just may be, 00:09:54.12\00:09:55.86 God is going to give us 00:09:55.89\00:09:57.26 a new beginning in our understanding 00:09:57.29\00:09:59.06 of what it truly means to be a disciple of Jesus 00:09:59.09\00:10:00.80 at this camp meeting. 00:10:00.83\00:10:02.63 Are you with me? 00:10:02.66\00:10:04.00 So let's pray for ourselves today. 00:10:04.03\00:10:05.70 I would ask you to kneel in your hearts 00:10:05.73\00:10:07.70 and all kneel here as we ask the spirit of God 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.64 to be with us in a very special way 00:10:09.67\00:10:11.01 as we commence with our presentation. 00:10:11.04\00:10:15.04 Father in heaven, we come to you just now, 00:10:15.08\00:10:19.08 thanking You and praising You that You are God in heaven 00:10:19.11\00:10:22.38 and we are but dust. 00:10:22.42\00:10:24.65 Father, yesterday we have learned 00:10:24.69\00:10:26.02 that You are a God of love, 00:10:26.05\00:10:27.39 infinite, unfathomable, immeasurable love. 00:10:27.42\00:10:31.53 And so we cast our helpless souls on You, Father. 00:10:31.56\00:10:34.00 We are looking to You for salvation, for grace, 00:10:34.03\00:10:36.70 for mercy, for victory. 00:10:36.73\00:10:39.80 And Father, we are looking to You 00:10:39.83\00:10:41.17 here today at camp meeting, 00:10:41.20\00:10:42.64 3ABN camp meeting for a new beginning. 00:10:42.67\00:10:46.04 Father, we don't want that 00:10:46.07\00:10:47.41 just to be a cute colloquial title. 00:10:47.44\00:10:48.81 We need a new beginning, 00:10:48.84\00:10:50.18 many of us in our spiritual experience. 00:10:50.21\00:10:53.95 Many of us have been satisfied oh, God to be mere members, 00:10:53.98\00:10:57.79 when You have called us each and everyone 00:10:57.82\00:10:59.99 to be mighty missionaries. 00:11:00.02\00:11:03.16 Father, today as we continue our discussion 00:11:03.19\00:11:05.56 of the interconnectedness and the interrelationship 00:11:05.59\00:11:08.56 between character and converts, 00:11:08.60\00:11:11.73 I pray that You would melt our hearts, 00:11:11.77\00:11:13.84 and Father, chasten us in our apathy, 00:11:13.87\00:11:16.94 chasten us in our indifference to lost souls. 00:11:16.97\00:11:21.94 Give us here today biblical clarity 00:11:21.98\00:11:25.31 that we may go from here in the strength of Christ, 00:11:25.35\00:11:29.45 believing that God has called us, 00:11:29.48\00:11:31.35 yes, even us to be winners of souls, 00:11:31.39\00:11:36.56 missionaries, and communicators 00:11:36.59\00:11:39.13 of the great good news of the gospel. 00:11:39.16\00:11:42.83 Revive us again, oh God, and give us a revival 00:11:42.86\00:11:45.87 of primitive discipleship evangelism and godliness. 00:11:45.90\00:11:52.64 In Jesus' name, let everyone say-- 00:11:52.67\00:11:55.04 Amen. Amen. 00:11:55.08\00:11:56.41 Say it with me if you would. 00:12:00.35\00:12:01.68 "Every true disciple 00:12:01.72\00:12:05.29 is born into the kingdom of God as a missionary." 00:12:05.32\00:12:10.79 And we asked a question yesterday, 00:12:10.83\00:12:14.00 "Why would Ellen White used the word 'true' 00:12:14.03\00:12:18.53 to modify disciple here?" 00:12:18.57\00:12:20.24 Right? 00:12:20.27\00:12:21.60 Every true disciple is born 00:12:21.64\00:12:22.97 into the kingdom of God as a missionary." 00:12:23.00\00:12:24.34 And the answer must be that she was setting apart, 00:12:24.37\00:12:28.44 disciples, regular, old run-of-the-mill disciples 00:12:28.48\00:12:31.91 from true disciples. 00:12:31.95\00:12:33.92 Now, I don't know about you 00:12:33.95\00:12:35.28 but I want to be a true disciple. 00:12:35.32\00:12:36.79 Are you with me, yes or no? 00:12:36.82\00:12:38.22 And so we learned yesterday 00:12:38.25\00:12:39.59 that we have a functional equivalence here, 00:12:39.62\00:12:40.96 we have a grammatical equivalence here. 00:12:40.99\00:12:42.79 If I am a true disciple, 00:12:42.82\00:12:45.49 then by definition, I am a what? 00:12:45.53\00:12:47.63 Missionary, and this gives us a litmus test 00:12:47.66\00:12:49.90 by which to gauge our own Christian experience. 00:12:49.93\00:12:53.10 Because we can ask ourselves, if you sometimes wonder: 00:12:53.13\00:12:55.04 am I really a Christian, am I really disciple, 00:12:55.07\00:12:56.81 am I a true disciple. 00:12:56.84\00:12:58.17 We can very easily ask ourselves, 00:12:58.21\00:12:59.97 "Am I a missionary?" 00:13:00.01\00:13:02.91 And if the answer to that question is yes, 00:13:02.94\00:13:05.55 then chances are you are, in fact, a true disciple. 00:13:05.58\00:13:08.18 However, if the answer to that question is no, 00:13:08.22\00:13:12.29 then what would be the answer to the question, 00:13:12.32\00:13:13.69 are you a true disciple? 00:13:13.72\00:13:15.46 The answer would be no because every true disciple 00:13:15.49\00:13:17.99 is born into the kingdom of God as missionary. 00:13:18.03\00:13:20.53 We also learned yesterday, 00:13:20.56\00:13:22.06 marvelous statement from the Great Controversy, 00:13:22.10\00:13:24.07 the Spirit of Christ is a missionary spirit, right. 00:13:24.10\00:13:29.87 The Spirit of Christ is a what? 00:13:29.90\00:13:31.77 Missionary spirit. 00:13:31.81\00:13:33.14 And we talked about the various attributes 00:13:33.17\00:13:35.54 that philosophers and theologians 00:13:35.58\00:13:37.01 attribute to God, right. 00:13:37.05\00:13:38.38 Omnipotence, and omniscient, 00:13:38.41\00:13:39.75 and omnibenevolence, omnipresence 00:13:39.78\00:13:41.52 and we were asking the question, 00:13:41.55\00:13:42.88 if we were able to peel back all of these properties 00:13:42.92\00:13:44.89 that God possesses and that theologians, 00:13:44.92\00:13:47.62 these labels that they attached to Him 00:13:47.66\00:13:49.42 and we were to get in to the very heart 00:13:49.46\00:13:50.79 of heart of the germ of the nucleus 00:13:50.83\00:13:53.63 of what makes God tick, 00:13:53.66\00:13:55.50 what did we say we would discover there? 00:13:55.53\00:13:58.07 Love. That's exactly correct. 00:13:58.10\00:13:59.43 And then we said, well, what is love? 00:13:59.47\00:14:02.17 Does anyone remember what is love? 00:14:02.20\00:14:04.97 Self sacrifice. 00:14:05.01\00:14:06.34 It is the principle of putting others first, right. 00:14:06.37\00:14:11.25 And where, does anyone remember where is that little verse, 00:14:11.28\00:14:14.28 where was that little phrase from a verse 00:14:14.32\00:14:17.05 that basically summed up the essence of what love is. 00:14:17.09\00:14:20.56 1 Corinthians 13:5, and what was the phrase? 00:14:20.59\00:14:25.39 "Love seeketh not her own." 00:14:25.43\00:14:28.40 And so here from this one little phrase 00:14:28.43\00:14:30.17 we establish a biblical president 00:14:30.20\00:14:32.60 for what real love is, not namby-pamby, willy-nilly, 00:14:32.63\00:14:36.10 fuzzy-wuzzy emotional fanciful love. 00:14:36.14\00:14:38.51 We are talking about real love. 00:14:38.54\00:14:40.28 And real love is not an emotion, 00:14:40.31\00:14:41.88 it's not a flight, it's not a fancy, 00:14:41.91\00:14:43.24 it's not a feeling. 00:14:43.28\00:14:44.61 Real love is a principle that says 00:14:44.65\00:14:46.65 others are more important than me. 00:14:46.68\00:14:48.22 Can you say amen? 00:14:48.25\00:14:49.58 And that was evinced, of course, 00:14:49.62\00:14:51.92 in the most marvelous demonstration of love 00:14:51.95\00:14:53.82 that the universe has ever seen 00:14:53.86\00:14:55.26 when God himself, 00:14:55.29\00:14:56.62 in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, 00:14:56.66\00:14:58.06 the incarnate God, went to the cross. 00:14:58.09\00:15:00.40 And the message of the cross was 00:15:00.43\00:15:02.03 that God would rather endure hell for you 00:15:02.06\00:15:04.87 than enjoy heaven without you. 00:15:04.90\00:15:07.34 Amen. 00:15:07.37\00:15:08.70 And so Jesus could say, 00:15:08.74\00:15:10.07 "Greater love has no man than this, 00:15:10.11\00:15:13.91 that a man would lay down his life 00:15:13.94\00:15:16.18 for his friends." 00:15:16.21\00:15:17.55 And God went even a step beyond that. 00:15:17.58\00:15:19.15 God laid down His life for his enemies. 00:15:19.18\00:15:22.95 And let's not forget to the apostle Paul says 00:15:22.98\00:15:24.72 in Romans 5:10, 00:15:24.75\00:15:26.35 "For if when we were enemies of God, 00:15:26.39\00:15:28.89 we were reconciled to Him by the death of his Son, 00:15:28.92\00:15:30.56 much more, having been reconciled, 00:15:30.59\00:15:31.93 we shall be saved by His life." 00:15:31.96\00:15:33.29 And so God goes above and beyond 00:15:33.33\00:15:34.66 not just laying down His life for his friends, 00:15:34.70\00:15:36.16 but even laying His life for His enemies. 00:15:36.20\00:15:40.24 And so we are asking the question, 00:15:40.27\00:15:41.60 if this what causes the heart of God 00:15:41.64\00:15:43.07 to beat, to palpate, to pulse, to seek and to save the loss. 00:15:43.10\00:15:46.98 That's what Jesus said in Luke 19:10. 00:15:47.01\00:15:49.21 And if the spirit of Christ is the missionary spirit, 00:15:49.24\00:15:51.68 I would be very comfortable saying 00:15:51.71\00:15:53.05 that God is the greatest missionary. 00:15:53.08\00:15:55.72 Amen. 00:15:55.75\00:15:57.92 All subsequent missionaries are simply feeding off 00:15:57.95\00:16:00.86 of the great love 00:16:00.89\00:16:02.22 and magnanimity and munificence of God 00:16:02.26\00:16:05.23 in going out to bring the message of salvation. 00:16:05.26\00:16:07.90 Jesus was the first missionary. 00:16:07.93\00:16:10.83 Are you with me? 00:16:10.87\00:16:12.20 And so we said, well, what is holiness, right. 00:16:12.23\00:16:15.17 We sometimes have these very weird 00:16:15.20\00:16:17.37 and I believe contrived and unfortunate 00:16:17.41\00:16:19.37 use of what holiness is. 00:16:19.41\00:16:20.88 Holiness is simply godlikeness. 00:16:20.91\00:16:24.25 Are you comfortable with that, yes or no? 00:16:24.28\00:16:26.35 God says, "Be therefore holy for I am holy." 00:16:26.38\00:16:30.69 So holiness is being like God and God is love. 00:16:30.72\00:16:36.42 Are you with me? 00:16:36.46\00:16:38.29 And so yesterday we talked 00:16:38.33\00:16:39.66 just about some of the wonderful, 00:16:39.69\00:16:41.26 beautiful, important things 00:16:41.30\00:16:42.86 that we as Seventh-day Adventists 00:16:42.90\00:16:44.23 hold to be true 00:16:44.27\00:16:45.60 and no one would take away things like returning tithe, 00:16:45.63\00:16:48.27 and being a vegetarian, and keeping the Sabbath 00:16:48.30\00:16:50.27 and being a member of the church. 00:16:50.31\00:16:51.64 Those are all important things. 00:16:51.67\00:16:53.01 Can you say amen? Amen. 00:16:53.04\00:16:54.38 But those things in and of themselves 00:16:54.41\00:16:56.01 do not give me enough in common with the God 00:16:56.04\00:16:59.08 who would hang bruised and bloodied 00:16:59.11\00:17:00.48 and beaten on a tree for me to reasonably expect 00:17:00.52\00:17:03.75 to spend eternity with that God. 00:17:03.79\00:17:06.79 Are you with me, yes or no? 00:17:06.82\00:17:08.19 God's heart beats to seek and to save the lost 00:17:08.22\00:17:10.79 and if at some fundamental level 00:17:10.83\00:17:13.50 my heart does not beat to seek and to save the loss, 00:17:13.53\00:17:16.70 I do not have that much in common with God. 00:17:16.73\00:17:22.50 That's basically a review of what we learnt yesterday. 00:17:22.54\00:17:24.37 And are we all on the same page up to that point? 00:17:24.41\00:17:26.57 Yes. Okay. 00:17:26.61\00:17:28.08 Now let's transition and begin to talk 00:17:28.11\00:17:30.91 about the two things that we closed on yesterday. 00:17:30.95\00:17:33.01 And that is the interconnectedness 00:17:33.05\00:17:35.38 of working for converts 00:17:35.42\00:17:37.39 and a Christ like character, okay. 00:17:37.42\00:17:39.95 There are only two things that you can take to heaven. 00:17:39.99\00:17:42.62 How many things? 00:17:42.66\00:17:43.99 Two things. 00:17:44.03\00:17:45.36 And those to things are character and converts, okay. 00:17:45.39\00:17:48.96 A Christ like character and converts. 00:17:49.00\00:17:50.83 And many of us have perhaps known that, 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.67 perhaps believe that, 00:17:52.70\00:17:54.04 may be you've heard me say that before. 00:17:54.07\00:17:55.40 Character and converts, 00:17:55.44\00:17:56.77 that's all you're taking to heaven. 00:17:56.81\00:17:58.14 But what I want to try and understand here today, 00:17:58.17\00:17:59.74 and the whole purpose of today's presentation 00:17:59.77\00:18:01.68 will be to show that it is not too unrelated 00:18:01.71\00:18:05.85 independent entities, character and converts. 00:18:05.88\00:18:08.25 It's not like, over one thing 00:18:08.28\00:18:09.68 that can go with me to heaven is over here 00:18:09.72\00:18:11.05 and that's a Christ like Character. 00:18:11.09\00:18:12.45 And over here is another thing that I can now- converts. 00:18:12.49\00:18:16.96 What we are going to see today 00:18:16.99\00:18:18.33 is that far from being independent, 00:18:18.36\00:18:20.80 these two things are interdependents. 00:18:20.83\00:18:24.80 Do you want a Christ like character? 00:18:24.83\00:18:29.24 Do you want a Christ like character? 00:18:29.27\00:18:30.91 There is more to that than being a vegan vegetarian. 00:18:30.94\00:18:36.38 Amen. Amen. 00:18:36.41\00:18:37.81 Important as that is. And you're looking at one. 00:18:37.85\00:18:40.05 So it's important as that is. 00:18:40.08\00:18:41.78 And I believe it's important. 00:18:41.82\00:18:43.15 Especially in this day in a, age on earth's history, 00:18:43.18\00:18:45.45 there is more to having a Christ like character 00:18:45.49\00:18:47.89 than simply being a vegetarian. 00:18:47.92\00:18:50.59 Christ's heart, His whole mission, 00:18:50.63\00:18:52.76 His whole passion was to seek in to save the lost. 00:18:52.79\00:18:55.90 And if I want a character like that, 00:18:55.93\00:18:57.87 I've got to be involved in seeking and saving the what? 00:18:57.90\00:19:02.14 The lost. 00:19:02.17\00:19:03.51 Now I was married April 4th 1999 00:19:03.54\00:19:06.64 and I had already made up my mind. 00:19:06.68\00:19:09.68 Before I was ever married, 00:19:09.71\00:19:11.05 before I had ever even met my future wife, 00:19:11.08\00:19:12.41 I already knew what the name of my first child 00:19:12.45\00:19:14.18 was going to be. 00:19:14.22\00:19:16.12 You know how that works? You just, I just-- 00:19:16.15\00:19:17.55 I had already decided 00:19:17.59\00:19:18.92 this will be the name of my first child. 00:19:18.95\00:19:20.29 And so after I was married 00:19:20.32\00:19:21.66 and lo and behold my wife got pregnant. 00:19:21.69\00:19:24.03 I love it when they said that, "well, she got pregnant." 00:19:24.06\00:19:27.80 You know, there is a cause effect relationship here 00:19:27.83\00:19:29.70 which some people don't seem to understand. 00:19:29.73\00:19:31.60 And so my wife just got pregnant. 00:19:31.63\00:19:33.70 You know those things just sometimes happen 00:19:33.74\00:19:35.20 with married couples. 00:19:35.24\00:19:36.71 And so my wife turns up pregnant 00:19:36.74\00:19:40.08 and I waited, I waited, I wanted to see 00:19:40.11\00:19:42.61 because my name was a boy's name. 00:19:42.64\00:19:44.48 And so we waited to do the little photograph, 00:19:44.51\00:19:46.58 you know, it doesn't look like anything to you 00:19:46.61\00:19:47.98 but it looks like something to the expert 00:19:48.02\00:19:49.35 on the other end of the camera. 00:19:49.38\00:19:50.72 They said, "It's a boy. Can't you see?" 00:19:50.75\00:19:52.29 and I am like, looks like a bunch of static on 00:19:52.32\00:19:53.86 and it screamed to me. 00:19:53.89\00:19:55.22 But okay, it's a boy. I'll take your word for. 00:19:55.26\00:19:56.76 And so, I knew it was a boy. So now I am in a dilemma. 00:19:56.79\00:19:59.59 You can appreciate men. 00:19:59.63\00:20:00.96 Some of you have this dilemma on other issues. 00:20:01.00\00:20:02.33 And that is, you've got this great idea 00:20:02.36\00:20:03.90 that you already made up your mind on. 00:20:03.93\00:20:05.37 But now you have to persuade your wife 00:20:05.40\00:20:06.87 that it's her idea. 00:20:06.90\00:20:08.24 Can anyone else relate to what I am saying here today? 00:20:13.34\00:20:17.61 "Sweetheart, I think it's a great idea 00:20:17.65\00:20:18.98 that we should get a new fishing bowl. 00:20:19.01\00:20:20.35 You know, I am glad you came up with that. 00:20:20.38\00:20:21.72 Brilliant." You know, that kind of a thing. 00:20:21.75\00:20:23.12 So here I've got this name and I've already picked it out 00:20:23.15\00:20:26.15 and, and my wife, I sort of-- to be honest, what I did is, 00:20:26.19\00:20:29.86 I started throwing out some sub par names. 00:20:29.89\00:20:33.56 None of which I will mention, by the way, 00:20:33.60\00:20:35.06 because invariably one of them will be in the audience, right. 00:20:35.10\00:20:37.53 So I started just, 00:20:37.57\00:20:38.90 I started just throwing out a few names, you know, 00:20:38.93\00:20:40.27 just to sort of soften her up to where she would say, 00:20:40.30\00:20:42.30 "No, my, no child of mine is gonna be marry that." 00:20:42.34\00:20:45.07 And I throw out another one, then she's, "No, no, no." 00:20:45.11\00:20:47.01 And I was softening her up 00:20:47.04\00:20:49.44 so I could spring on her my name 00:20:49.48\00:20:52.41 which would sound so wonderful in juxtaposition 00:20:52.45\00:20:54.68 to all of these bad names, right. 00:20:54.72\00:20:57.42 So the time came and I said, 00:20:57.45\00:20:58.89 "Well, what do you think about, Barnabas?" 00:20:58.92\00:21:03.09 You know the reaction that you are giving me 00:21:08.73\00:21:10.07 is identical to the reaction she gave. 00:21:10.10\00:21:11.77 I remember her exact words to this day 00:21:15.64\00:21:17.27 because my spirit was utterly crushed 00:21:17.31\00:21:18.64 because I've already decided 00:21:18.67\00:21:20.01 that was gonna be the name of my first child, 00:21:20.04\00:21:21.38 like four years before, right, Barnabas. 00:21:21.41\00:21:24.11 And she said, I'll never forget that she said, 00:21:24.15\00:21:27.58 "No son of mine is gonna be named Barney." 00:21:27.62\00:21:29.85 And at the time, 00:21:34.72\00:21:36.06 I have an uncle Barney and he is dear to me. 00:21:36.09\00:21:37.63 He's passed away now. 00:21:37.66\00:21:38.99 But at the time, you know, 00:21:39.03\00:21:40.36 he has this dancing purple dinosaur, 00:21:40.40\00:21:42.26 this ubiquitous dancing purple dinosaur 00:21:42.30\00:21:44.27 named Barney 00:21:44.30\00:21:45.63 and I had-- it never dawned on me 00:21:45.67\00:21:47.10 that Barnabas shortened to Barney. 00:21:47.14\00:21:51.51 Now you might be sitting there and thinking, 00:21:51.54\00:21:52.87 why in the world would you say? 00:21:52.91\00:21:54.64 Why had you made up your mind 00:21:54.68\00:21:56.31 that your son was going to be named Barnabas? 00:21:56.34\00:21:58.61 Right. 00:21:58.65\00:21:59.98 Incidentally that is not the name of my first son. 00:22:00.02\00:22:02.88 So mission not accomplished, okay. 00:22:02.92\00:22:06.99 Now why would you choose that name? 00:22:07.02\00:22:08.36 Now, let me tell you why I chose that name. 00:22:08.39\00:22:09.72 I was studying to the Book of Acts 00:22:09.76\00:22:11.09 and I came across Acts 11. 00:22:11.13\00:22:13.23 Now many of us are aware 00:22:13.26\00:22:14.60 that Barnabas was a biblical figure, right. 00:22:14.63\00:22:16.87 But if I say to you, 00:22:16.90\00:22:18.23 take out a piece of paper right now 00:22:18.27\00:22:19.67 and write down ten things about Barnabas. 00:22:19.70\00:22:23.91 Could you do it? No. Probably not. 00:22:23.94\00:22:26.51 But if I say for example take out a piece of paper 00:22:26.54\00:22:28.08 and write ten things about Peter. 00:22:28.11\00:22:30.81 Could you do that? Yeah, probably. 00:22:30.85\00:22:32.31 So we know great deal about Peter 00:22:32.35\00:22:33.68 but we don't know much about Barnabas. 00:22:33.72\00:22:35.35 We just do know that much about him. 00:22:35.38\00:22:37.99 But in Acts 11:24, 00:22:38.02\00:22:39.95 why don't you turn there with me? 00:22:39.99\00:22:41.42 In Acts 11:24, 00:22:41.46\00:22:43.63 we learn everything we need know about Barnabas. 00:22:43.66\00:22:47.40 And it is this verse that inspired me to make 00:22:47.43\00:22:49.96 what is probably in retrospect an irrational choice 00:22:50.00\00:22:52.53 to name my first son, before I had even met my wife. 00:22:52.57\00:22:55.50 But you will appreciate I think, 00:22:55.54\00:22:56.91 the strength of this verse. 00:22:56.94\00:22:59.37 Acts 11:24, describing Barnabas. 00:22:59.41\00:23:02.14 The Bible simply says, "He was a good man, 00:23:02.18\00:23:08.08 full of the Holy Ghost and of faith, 00:23:08.12\00:23:14.06 and much people was added unto the Lord." 00:23:14.09\00:23:19.23 Can you say amen to that? Amen. 00:23:19.26\00:23:21.03 Now beloved, if everything else in your life 00:23:21.06\00:23:24.17 was a complete failure by any worldly standard, 00:23:24.20\00:23:26.74 by any of your peer's standard, 00:23:26.77\00:23:28.80 if you could come to the end of your life, 00:23:28.84\00:23:30.31 to the end of your sojourn on earth, 00:23:30.34\00:23:32.11 and on your tomb stone, your epitaph 00:23:32.14\00:23:34.11 or whatever it might be, 00:23:34.14\00:23:35.48 if all that was said about you was, 00:23:35.51\00:23:36.95 she was a good woman, 00:23:36.98\00:23:38.31 full of the holy ghost and of faith 00:23:38.35\00:23:39.88 and much people was added unto the Lord, 00:23:39.91\00:23:41.75 would you trade in every worldly attainment 00:23:41.78\00:23:44.19 for just that to be said in truth about you, yes or no? 00:23:44.22\00:23:47.66 Of course. 00:23:47.69\00:23:50.96 "He was a good man, 00:23:50.99\00:23:52.33 full of the Holy Ghost and of faith 00:23:52.36\00:23:53.70 and much people was added unto the Lord." 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.06 Now let's just sort of unpack this. 00:23:55.10\00:23:56.43 He was a good man, character, 00:23:56.46\00:23:59.90 full of the Holy Ghost, character 00:23:59.93\00:24:04.14 and of faith, character. 00:24:04.17\00:24:06.41 This is describing you the kind of person that he was 00:24:06.44\00:24:09.08 and much people was added unto the Lord, converts. 00:24:09.11\00:24:16.02 Are you with me, yes or no? 00:24:16.05\00:24:17.42 There is an interrelationship, there is a interdependency 00:24:17.45\00:24:21.36 between these two notions of character and converts. 00:24:21.39\00:24:26.86 Do you want a Christ like character? 00:24:26.90\00:24:29.26 Yes or no? 00:24:29.30\00:24:30.63 Then you must work for converts. 00:24:30.67\00:24:35.94 So I am reading to this book, it's an old book. 00:24:35.97\00:24:37.54 You've probably never heard of it. 00:24:37.57\00:24:38.91 It's called 'The Desire of Ages.' 00:24:38.94\00:24:42.98 It wasn't written by Max Lucado either. 00:24:43.01\00:24:44.95 And on page 142, I come across this statement 00:24:48.18\00:24:51.22 and you and I are going to spend 00:24:51.25\00:24:52.59 a few moments on this statement 00:24:52.62\00:24:53.96 because we are going to understand it 00:24:53.99\00:24:55.49 whether you like it or not. 00:24:55.52\00:24:58.23 Amen? Amen. 00:24:58.26\00:24:59.63 Now, before I read to the statement, 00:24:59.66\00:25:01.00 again I want to do what I did yesterday. 00:25:01.03\00:25:02.36 I want to apologize to you 00:25:02.40\00:25:03.73 on behalf of-- in many instances, 00:25:03.77\00:25:05.83 the Seventh-day Adventist ministry 00:25:05.87\00:25:07.20 for not telling you 00:25:07.24\00:25:08.57 what I am about ready to tell you. 00:25:08.60\00:25:10.01 Because some of us start, "Oh, you know, 00:25:10.04\00:25:11.81 it's good to be a Christian, 00:25:11.84\00:25:13.17 and I stopped doing all those things. 00:25:13.21\00:25:15.04 I don't go to movies anymore, and I'm even working, 00:25:15.08\00:25:17.48 I'm even cutting meat out of my diet 00:25:17.51\00:25:19.41 and I'm just, I am feeling like a Christian. 00:25:19.45\00:25:21.28 And in the unlikely event that I ever get a chance 00:25:21.32\00:25:24.29 to actually witness, I am willing to do it." 00:25:24.32\00:25:27.46 Right. 00:25:27.49\00:25:28.82 We have somehow disassociated in our minds 00:25:28.86\00:25:31.26 being a Christian and being a witness. 00:25:31.29\00:25:34.86 It's the difference, it's the dichotomy 00:25:34.90\00:25:36.56 between being a member and being a missionary, okay. 00:25:36.60\00:25:40.60 So I want to apologize. That has been communicated. 00:25:40.64\00:25:42.60 I think it, it is been communicated, 00:25:42.64\00:25:44.37 if not overtly, covertly and you know it's the case 00:25:44.41\00:25:47.44 because that's why you go to many of our churches 00:25:47.48\00:25:49.21 and they are filled to the brim in many instances with members 00:25:49.24\00:25:51.41 but scarcely a missionary there. 00:25:51.45\00:25:55.05 So, Desire of Ages. 00:25:55.08\00:25:56.42 Page 142, and we are going to love this 00:25:56.45\00:25:59.65 whether we like it or not. 00:25:59.69\00:26:03.46 "God could have reached His object 00:26:03.49\00:26:04.96 in saving sinners without our help. 00:26:04.99\00:26:08.30 Right. That's the first sentence. 00:26:08.33\00:26:09.66 Now that seems to be axiomatically true. 00:26:09.70\00:26:11.67 Right. That seems to be the case. 00:26:11.70\00:26:13.23 "God could have reached His object 00:26:13.27\00:26:14.60 in saving sinners without our help." 00:26:14.64\00:26:15.97 Do you agree with that? Yes. 00:26:16.00\00:26:17.34 Very simple. 00:26:17.37\00:26:18.71 We have instances about it in the scripture, don't we? 00:26:18.74\00:26:20.08 On one occasion, 00:26:20.11\00:26:21.44 God used the donkey to speak to man. 00:26:21.48\00:26:23.61 On another occasion God used the great fish, 00:26:23.65\00:26:25.75 some translation say a whale to speak to man. 00:26:25.78\00:26:29.05 Jesus even spoke to Peter through a rooster, 00:26:29.08\00:26:31.29 so he's not averse to using chickens. 00:26:31.32\00:26:33.36 And on one occasion Jesus said, 00:26:33.39\00:26:35.49 if these should be quite, 00:26:35.52\00:26:36.86 if these should hold their peace, 00:26:36.89\00:26:38.49 even the very stones would cry out. 00:26:38.53\00:26:40.53 So God can use donkeys, God can use fish, 00:26:40.56\00:26:42.80 God can use roosters and God can use stones 00:26:42.83\00:26:45.10 but let me tell you something here. 00:26:45.13\00:26:46.47 There would be a huge causality. 00:26:46.50\00:26:50.21 There would be a tremendous causality, 00:26:50.24\00:26:54.04 a catastrophe if you will, catastrophe, 00:26:54.08\00:26:56.75 if God chose to reach sinners through chickens, 00:26:56.78\00:27:00.35 and donkeys and fish and rocks. 00:27:00.38\00:27:03.32 And do you know who that causality would be? 00:27:03.35\00:27:07.96 You are a smart group. 00:27:07.99\00:27:10.79 I am so pleased. 00:27:10.83\00:27:12.19 There is a spiritual IQ 00:27:12.23\00:27:14.20 that seems to be just a little higher here 00:27:14.23\00:27:16.56 at the 3ABN camp meeting. 00:27:16.60\00:27:17.93 And it thrills my soul. 00:27:17.97\00:27:19.67 You have got all the right answers so far. 00:27:19.70\00:27:22.00 Now, of course, at the end we will make an appeal for you 00:27:22.04\00:27:23.57 to actually do something with those write answers. 00:27:23.61\00:27:25.24 But at least you are giving the right answers. 00:27:25.27\00:27:28.71 Amen? Amen. 00:27:28.74\00:27:30.08 So God could have reached His object 00:27:30.11\00:27:31.71 in saving sinners without our help, without our aid 00:27:31.75\00:27:33.85 but-- now the word but, 00:27:33.88\00:27:39.05 an important word in the English language. 00:27:39.09\00:27:40.49 Yes or no? Okay. 00:27:40.52\00:27:42.06 It's a conjunction. 00:27:42.09\00:27:43.43 That's its grammatical use. It's a conjunction. 00:27:43.46\00:27:45.69 It's like the word, 'and' but it is very different 00:27:45.73\00:27:47.66 in some senses from the word 'and.' 00:27:47.70\00:27:49.43 The word 'and' is also a grammatical conjunction. 00:27:49.46\00:27:51.33 So you might say something like, I like pizza and pasta. 00:27:51.37\00:27:54.94 I like soup and salad. Are you with me, yes or no? 00:27:54.97\00:27:57.87 And, 'and' joins two ideas together, 00:27:57.91\00:28:00.61 two nouns, two phrases together 00:28:00.64\00:28:02.34 but it does not indicate a turn. 00:28:02.38\00:28:04.55 It's just, I like soup and salad, right. 00:28:04.58\00:28:07.62 Pizza and pasta, right. 00:28:07.65\00:28:09.18 Are you with me everyone? And, and. 00:28:09.22\00:28:10.85 Okay, now the word 'but is also a conjunction 00:28:10.89\00:28:12.85 but it indicates a turn of events, okay. 00:28:12.89\00:28:15.89 It is a conjunction, 00:28:15.92\00:28:17.26 it can join two clauses, two nouns, two ideas 00:28:17.29\00:28:20.70 but it indicates a change or a turn. 00:28:20.73\00:28:23.03 So for example, in the illustration, 00:28:23.06\00:28:24.67 I like to use this, If you applied for a job 00:28:24.70\00:28:27.04 and you filled out your application, 00:28:27.07\00:28:29.90 you sent in your resume, you went in for the interview 00:28:29.94\00:28:32.01 and you just answered every question deftly, 00:28:32.04\00:28:34.04 and you were just sure you got the job. 00:28:34.08\00:28:35.54 I mean, just sure and so. 00:28:35.58\00:28:36.91 You know, a week later or whatever it is later 00:28:36.95\00:28:38.41 you get a letter in the mail and it says 00:28:38.45\00:28:40.05 "Dear sir, dear madam, 00:28:40.08\00:28:41.42 thank you so much for coming into interview with us. 00:28:41.45\00:28:42.78 It was a pleasure spending the other morning with you 00:28:42.82\00:28:44.15 and we appreciate the time 00:28:44.19\00:28:45.52 you took out of your busy schedule 00:28:45.55\00:28:46.89 to come and meet with us but... 00:28:46.92\00:28:48.26 Do you need to read the rest of the letter? 00:28:52.89\00:28:54.73 You don't need to read the rest of the letter 00:28:54.76\00:28:56.10 because it's telling you 00:28:56.13\00:28:57.47 but we chose to fill this position internally 00:28:57.50\00:28:58.83 or whatever they say. 00:28:58.87\00:29:00.20 The moment that you encounter the word 00:29:00.24\00:29:01.57 but you know that we are like going this direction, 00:29:01.60\00:29:03.41 "Oh, yeah, it was good to see you too 00:29:03.44\00:29:04.77 and it was really. 00:29:04.81\00:29:06.14 And you ran up against the but, right? 00:29:06.17\00:29:08.31 Now you know you are not walking that way anymore. 00:29:08.34\00:29:09.84 Now you are walking this way, right. 00:29:09.88\00:29:11.81 So 'but' indicates a U turn, okay. 00:29:11.85\00:29:15.32 So now listen, God could have reached His object 00:29:15.35\00:29:18.62 in saving sinners without our aid but... 00:29:18.65\00:29:23.83 Are you with me? 00:29:23.86\00:29:25.19 Incase if we were walking this way, 00:29:25.23\00:29:26.56 "Oh yeah, God can use donkeys, 00:29:26.59\00:29:27.93 and God can use roosters, and God can use chickens, 00:29:27.96\00:29:29.83 and God can use stones, 00:29:29.86\00:29:32.63 but-- 00:29:32.67\00:29:36.60 Now we are walking this way, aren't we? 00:29:36.64\00:29:38.61 Are you ready for the 'but'? 00:29:38.64\00:29:40.78 "But 00:29:40.81\00:29:42.14 in order for us to develop a character like Christ's, 00:29:42.18\00:29:47.82 we must share in His work. 00:29:47.85\00:29:52.19 In order for us to enter into His joy," His joy, 00:29:52.22\00:29:56.86 "the joy of seeing souls redeemed by His sacrifice, 00:29:56.89\00:29:59.89 we must participate in His labors for their redemption." 00:29:59.93\00:30:05.20 Are you with me, yes or no? 00:30:05.23\00:30:06.57 Now you will notice that she employs the phrase two times 00:30:06.60\00:30:09.17 "in order to." 00:30:09.20\00:30:11.01 Did you get that? "In order to," "In order to." 00:30:11.04\00:30:14.11 Now what does that phrase, 00:30:14.14\00:30:15.48 what is the function of that phrase? 00:30:15.51\00:30:16.85 Very simply, the phrase "in order to" 00:30:16.88\00:30:19.38 denotes a necessary sequence of events. 00:30:19.41\00:30:23.28 Are you with me? 00:30:23.32\00:30:24.65 Okay, in order for me to start my car, 00:30:24.69\00:30:27.89 I must turn the key. 00:30:27.92\00:30:30.73 In order for me to have a full stomach I must eat, right? 00:30:30.76\00:30:34.23 In order to, in other words if you want to get to B, 00:30:34.26\00:30:36.73 you got to go through A. 00:30:36.77\00:30:38.67 Okay, now I want you to listen to it again. 00:30:38.70\00:30:40.34 "In order for us to develop a character like Christ," 00:30:40.37\00:30:42.84 how many of us want to develop a character like Christ? 00:30:42.87\00:30:44.67 So that's B, that's over there, that's B. 00:30:44.71\00:30:46.81 I want B over there, right I'm headed towards B, 00:30:46.84\00:30:49.54 so in order for me to develop a character like Christ, 00:30:49.58\00:30:51.78 I must share in His labors. 00:30:51.81\00:30:55.55 So question, can I develop a character like Christ 00:30:55.58\00:30:58.72 without participating in His labors for their redemption? 00:30:58.75\00:31:02.12 Okay, in order to enter into His joy, 00:31:02.16\00:31:04.49 do I want the joy of Jesus? 00:31:04.53\00:31:06.16 She says it's "the joy of seeing souls 00:31:06.19\00:31:07.53 redeem by His sacrifice." 00:31:07.56\00:31:08.90 So that's over there, that's B. 00:31:08.93\00:31:10.27 I want to enter into that joy. 00:31:10.30\00:31:11.63 How do I enter into that joy? 00:31:11.67\00:31:13.00 I must share in His labors for their redemption. 00:31:13.03\00:31:18.17 Are you tracking with me? 00:31:18.21\00:31:20.21 Do you want to character like Christ? 00:31:20.24\00:31:23.18 You can not get it, 00:31:23.21\00:31:25.18 if you are not working for converts. 00:31:25.21\00:31:30.39 Clear enough? 00:31:30.42\00:31:31.82 All this is by the way is a recapitulation, 00:31:31.85\00:31:34.42 a restating of our opening mantra, 00:31:34.46\00:31:37.56 "Every true disciple 00:31:37.59\00:31:40.03 is born into the kingdom of God as a missionary." 00:31:40.06\00:31:45.20 It's simply a recapitulation of that idea, 00:31:45.23\00:31:47.34 if you want the character of Christ, 00:31:47.37\00:31:49.34 you must participate in the works of Christ 00:31:49.37\00:31:51.84 because how are you ever going 00:31:51.87\00:31:53.94 to identify with the God who would give everything 00:31:53.98\00:31:57.35 even His own existence for others, 00:31:57.38\00:31:59.18 if you are not giving something for others? 00:31:59.21\00:32:02.75 And what was our Bible study yesterday, 00:32:02.78\00:32:04.12 what was that phrase 00:32:04.15\00:32:05.49 that we looked at in the New Testament, 00:32:05.52\00:32:06.86 "He gave," what did He give? 00:32:06.89\00:32:08.26 "Himself." 00:32:08.29\00:32:09.62 "He gave himself," "He gave himself," 00:32:09.66\00:32:11.59 "He gave himself." 00:32:11.63\00:32:12.96 Do you want to spend eternity with the God that gave Himself? 00:32:12.99\00:32:16.93 Then you better start giving yourself for others. 00:32:16.97\00:32:20.80 Amen. 00:32:20.84\00:32:22.94 Otherwise it's just not reasonable for you to expect 00:32:22.97\00:32:27.24 that you have enough in common with God 00:32:27.28\00:32:29.18 to prepare you to spend eternity with Him. 00:32:29.21\00:32:31.38 You just don't relate. 00:32:31.41\00:32:33.55 Amen. 00:32:33.58\00:32:35.68 We will return to that point. 00:32:35.72\00:32:39.19 I love the fact that Tammy is saying 00:32:39.22\00:32:41.62 "my treasures are laid out somewhere beyond the blue." 00:32:41.66\00:32:45.19 Did you hear that? 00:32:45.23\00:32:46.56 "The angles backing me from heavens open to 00:32:46.59\00:32:49.03 my treasures are laid out somewhere beyond the blue." 00:32:49.06\00:32:51.57 How many of you have heard the phrase 00:32:51.60\00:32:53.74 "to lay your treasure up in heaven." 00:32:53.77\00:32:56.20 How many of you heard that, that notion? 00:32:56.24\00:32:57.74 Matthew Chapter 6, okay we've heard. 00:32:57.77\00:32:59.77 What is that what is the treasure in heaven? 00:32:59.81\00:33:02.04 What is the treasure laid up in heaven? 00:33:10.59\00:33:14.26 Well, can I show you from the Bible? 00:33:14.29\00:33:16.22 Is that fair? 00:33:16.26\00:33:17.59 Now we're going to do this 00:33:17.63\00:33:18.96 by looking at two parallel passages. 00:33:18.99\00:33:20.43 Okay, they're both in Matthew. 00:33:20.46\00:33:22.03 So go to Matthew Chapter 6, let's put our, 00:33:22.06\00:33:24.93 we'll, actually look at-- 00:33:24.97\00:33:27.00 well, yeah, let's go to Matthew Chapter 6, go there. 00:33:27.04\00:33:31.07 Matthew Chapter 6, 00:33:31.11\00:33:34.14 and if you got one of these ribbons 00:33:34.18\00:33:36.95 or a pen or a finger or your neighbor's finger 00:33:36.98\00:33:39.58 what ever you need, 00:33:39.61\00:33:42.08 just take that and put that right there, okay. 00:33:42.12\00:33:44.75 And then the other passage 00:33:44.79\00:33:46.12 we're gonna go to is Matthew Chapter 19. 00:33:46.15\00:33:48.22 Okay. 00:33:48.26\00:33:49.59 Matthew Chapter 19, 00:33:49.62\00:33:51.19 so we have one in Matthew 6 and one in Matthew 19. 00:33:51.23\00:33:55.60 All right, are we all together on that? 00:33:55.63\00:33:58.10 So let's read the passage in Matthew Chapter 6 first. 00:33:58.13\00:34:00.24 Matthew 6:19. Matthew 6:19. 00:34:00.27\00:34:04.11 This is the passage that we're familiar with. 00:34:04.14\00:34:06.11 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures," where? 00:34:06.14\00:34:09.24 "On earth where moth and rust destroy, 00:34:09.28\00:34:10.95 and where thieves break in" and what did they do? 00:34:10.98\00:34:13.15 "Steal." "But" there is the "but" right. 00:34:13.18\00:34:16.55 "But lay up for yourselves treasures," where everyone? 00:34:16.58\00:34:20.56 "In heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys 00:34:20.59\00:34:23.32 and where thieves do not break in and steal." 00:34:23.36\00:34:26.76 Okay, so far so good. 00:34:26.80\00:34:28.16 So Jesus says don't lay your treasures up on earth 00:34:28.20\00:34:30.67 because they are perishable. 00:34:30.70\00:34:32.27 But put your treasures in heaven 00:34:32.30\00:34:33.64 because they are imperishable. 00:34:33.67\00:34:35.00 Well, my question is what are those heaven, 00:34:35.04\00:34:36.37 what does that mean? 00:34:36.40\00:34:37.74 Sometimes we have these very powerful, very profound, 00:34:37.77\00:34:39.47 very robust Bible passages 00:34:39.51\00:34:41.91 and we turn them into cute little colloquial sayings 00:34:41.94\00:34:44.78 that we cross stitch 00:34:44.81\00:34:46.41 and then we hang above the toilet 00:34:46.45\00:34:47.78 in the guest bathroom. 00:34:47.82\00:34:49.58 Oh, isn't that nice you know, 00:34:49.62\00:34:51.22 though I speak with the tongues 00:34:51.25\00:34:52.59 of men and of angles in heaven, I love. 00:34:52.62\00:34:54.86 And we cross stitch 00:34:54.89\00:34:56.22 and we put that little blue birds 00:34:56.26\00:34:57.59 and we hang it up above the toilet 00:34:57.63\00:34:58.96 in the guest bathroom. 00:34:58.99\00:35:00.33 Beloved, when you read 00:35:00.36\00:35:01.70 1 Corinthians Chapter 13 and its context, 00:35:01.73\00:35:03.06 it is a scathing rebuke to the people of Corinth. 00:35:03.10\00:35:07.20 And we sometimes neutral the word of God 00:35:07.24\00:35:09.34 when we turn it to just cute little proverbial sayings. 00:35:09.37\00:35:12.81 Oh, I love that one, the treasures in heaven, 00:35:12.84\00:35:15.61 let's cross stitch that up 00:35:15.64\00:35:17.15 and I have nothing against cross stitching, by the way. 00:35:17.18\00:35:18.91 Nothing at all. 00:35:18.95\00:35:20.28 But let's cross stitch that up treasures in heaven 00:35:20.32\00:35:21.72 with a little blue birds and a flower and a sun shining 00:35:21.75\00:35:24.55 and the little, oh, perfect. 00:35:24.59\00:35:25.92 And we put it somewhere. Isn't that cute? 00:35:25.95\00:35:27.66 But what does it mean? 00:35:27.69\00:35:30.19 Are you with me? Yes or no? 00:35:30.23\00:35:31.69 What does it mean, treasures in heaven? 00:35:31.73\00:35:33.70 But look at Matthew 19. Okay. 00:35:33.73\00:35:36.06 You are there Matthew 6 Jesus counsels, 00:35:36.10\00:35:37.83 don't put your treasures on earth, 00:35:37.87\00:35:39.20 but put your treasure in heaven and look at Matthew 19:21. 00:35:39.23\00:35:43.71 Matthew 19:21. 00:35:43.74\00:35:45.77 Jesus here is speaking to the rich young, what? 00:35:45.81\00:35:48.38 Ruler. 00:35:48.41\00:35:49.74 Right, So "Jesus said to him, 'if you want to be perfect, 00:35:49.78\00:35:55.15 go and sell what you have and give to the poor 00:35:55.18\00:36:00.49 and you will have treasure'" where? 00:36:00.52\00:36:02.56 "In heaven." 00:36:02.59\00:36:03.93 And then He says something very interesting. 00:36:03.96\00:36:05.29 "And come and follow me." 00:36:05.33\00:36:09.03 Okay, now the rich young ruler was probably rich. 00:36:09.06\00:36:12.07 That's why we call him the rich young ruler. 00:36:12.10\00:36:13.74 Are you with me? 00:36:13.77\00:36:15.10 Okay, now I don't know how he got his wealth, 00:36:15.14\00:36:16.71 but lets just say for the sake of illustration 00:36:16.74\00:36:18.17 that he got his wealth from, he was a business man. 00:36:18.21\00:36:20.71 Let's just say he was a business man. 00:36:20.74\00:36:22.18 Okay, now I want you to look at that phrase there 00:36:22.21\00:36:24.11 "follow me." 00:36:24.15\00:36:26.08 What's the phrase everyone? "Follow me" Right. 00:36:26.11\00:36:28.25 "Follow me and you'll have treasure in heaven." 00:36:28.28\00:36:30.02 Okay. 00:36:30.05\00:36:31.39 That phrase "follow me," 00:36:31.42\00:36:32.75 you study that in the New Testament 00:36:32.79\00:36:34.12 and that is an invitation by Jesus to discipleship. 00:36:34.16\00:36:39.89 Are you with me? 00:36:39.93\00:36:41.26 It's not just an ordinary, it's not just, 00:36:41.30\00:36:42.86 this is not just an ordinary run-of-the-mill, 00:36:42.90\00:36:44.63 general invitation here. 00:36:44.67\00:36:46.87 When He says to the rich young ruler "follow me," 00:36:46.90\00:36:49.70 this is just exactly like what He said 00:36:49.74\00:36:51.77 to Levi or Matthew there at the receipt of custom, 00:36:51.81\00:36:53.61 he said "follow me." 00:36:53.64\00:36:55.18 And what he said to Peter, James and John 00:36:55.21\00:36:56.61 down by the Sea of Galilee? 00:36:56.64\00:36:57.98 Follow me. 00:36:58.01\00:36:59.35 So He says to the rich young ruler, "Follow me." 00:36:59.38\00:37:01.48 Are you with me everyone? Yes or no? 00:37:01.52\00:37:03.08 Now I want you to notice something very interesting, 00:37:03.12\00:37:04.59 let's talk about that phrase. 00:37:04.62\00:37:06.65 Let's talk about that invitation 00:37:06.69\00:37:08.02 that Jesus gave there to Peter, James and John. 00:37:08.06\00:37:09.39 Now follow this through. 00:37:09.42\00:37:10.76 We're goanna put, imagining in our minds eye, 00:37:10.79\00:37:12.13 we've got track one here and track two here, okay. 00:37:12.16\00:37:15.50 So Jesus is speaking to Peter, James and John. 00:37:15.53\00:37:17.40 What was their vocation? They were fishermen. 00:37:17.43\00:37:20.10 Okay, so watch this very carefully. 00:37:20.14\00:37:21.70 Jesus says to fishermen "follow me," that's right here, 00:37:21.74\00:37:26.94 "and I will make you fishers of men." 00:37:26.98\00:37:29.98 Tracking with me, yes or no? Follow me. 00:37:30.01\00:37:31.98 What was that an invitation to? 00:37:32.01\00:37:34.05 To be my disciple. 00:37:34.08\00:37:35.78 Come and be my disciple 00:37:35.82\00:37:37.15 and I'll teach you how to fish for men. 00:37:37.19\00:37:38.52 Okay, so Jesus is speaking to fishermen 00:37:38.55\00:37:39.89 and he says I'll make you fishers of men. 00:37:39.92\00:37:41.36 So now Jesus, that's track one, 00:37:41.39\00:37:43.06 now Jesus is speaking to a wealthy man, 00:37:43.09\00:37:45.19 perhaps a businessmen, right? 00:37:45.23\00:37:46.56 A man who is interested 00:37:46.59\00:37:47.93 in material possessions, treasures. 00:37:47.96\00:37:49.66 And He says "Follow me, 00:37:49.70\00:37:53.84 and you'll get treasure" where? 00:37:53.87\00:37:57.24 "In heaven." What is this invitation to? 00:37:57.27\00:38:00.11 It's an invitation to discipleship. 00:38:00.14\00:38:01.48 Now when you lay 00:38:01.51\00:38:02.84 both of these right down side, beside one another parallel, 00:38:02.88\00:38:05.15 it makes perfect sense. 00:38:05.18\00:38:06.51 Jesus says to the fishermen "follow me 00:38:06.55\00:38:08.12 and I'll make you fishers of men," 00:38:08.15\00:38:09.48 of course, He employ that kind of language, 00:38:09.52\00:38:10.85 He was speaking to fishermen. 00:38:10.89\00:38:12.22 But when Jesus was speaking to a businessmen, 00:38:12.25\00:38:13.59 He is giving the same invitation "follow me" 00:38:13.62\00:38:15.82 but he doesn't say I'll make you fishers of men 00:38:15.86\00:38:17.36 that may not have appealed to a man 00:38:17.39\00:38:18.73 is was a businessmen or a wealthy men. 00:38:18.76\00:38:20.10 He says follow me 00:38:20.13\00:38:21.46 and I'll give you an even better treasure 00:38:21.50\00:38:22.83 than the material good you could accumulate here on earth. 00:38:22.86\00:38:24.63 But in both instances, the invitation to discipleship 00:38:24.67\00:38:27.60 was an invitation to become a partner with Jesus 00:38:27.64\00:38:30.97 in the evangelization of the world 00:38:31.01\00:38:33.11 in the preaching of the gospel. 00:38:33.14\00:38:34.68 Amen. 00:38:34.71\00:38:36.04 When he speaks to fishermen he says you know what, 00:38:36.08\00:38:37.68 I got it, you will be fishers of men 00:38:37.71\00:38:39.41 and what he speaks to businessmen he says, 00:38:39.45\00:38:40.82 I give you treasures in heaven. 00:38:40.85\00:38:42.28 Well, what does it mean to the fishers of men? 00:38:42.32\00:38:44.29 It means to be a co-worker with God. 00:38:44.32\00:38:46.52 Are you with me, yes or no? 00:38:46.55\00:38:47.89 What does that mean to have treasures in heaven? 00:38:47.92\00:38:49.26 It means to be a co-worker with God. 00:38:49.29\00:38:53.36 Do you follow that? It's very, very simple. 00:38:53.40\00:38:55.06 So what is the treasure in heaven? 00:38:55.10\00:38:58.73 Well, it's two fold. 00:38:58.77\00:39:01.20 It's two fold. 00:39:01.24\00:39:04.17 It's souls saved 00:39:04.21\00:39:07.18 and the character that you develop 00:39:07.21\00:39:09.21 by working in partnership with God to save those souls. 00:39:09.24\00:39:12.55 It's character and it's converts. 00:39:12.58\00:39:16.42 Are you tracking with me? 00:39:16.45\00:39:17.92 Now you thing I made that up? 00:39:17.95\00:39:20.92 You thought I made that up? 00:39:20.96\00:39:22.59 I didn't. I didn't. 00:39:22.62\00:39:25.09 It's not original with me. 00:39:25.13\00:39:26.59 I think it's exactly 00:39:26.63\00:39:27.96 what the Bible is teaching in a variety of passages 00:39:28.00\00:39:29.83 and I think it's also exactly 00:39:29.86\00:39:31.53 what Ellen White affirmed in the book 00:39:31.57\00:39:33.00 Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, 00:39:33.03\00:39:34.37 when she commented on the phrase 00:39:34.40\00:39:35.80 "do not lay up for yourselves treasures is on earth 00:39:35.84\00:39:37.94 "do rather treasures is in heaven." 00:39:37.97\00:39:39.31 So I'd like to read you part of that. 00:39:39.34\00:39:41.74 Are you tracking with me?
