Unless the Lord
builds the house,

They labor in vain who build it;
00:13:29.55\00:13:32.80
Unless the Lord guards the city,

The watchmen
stays awake in vain.

Notice that the Psalm
is attributed to Solomon

and it's I think about
the experience of Solomon

I'm convince that
Solomon knew something about

building. Solomon probably
and I don't have scriptural

evidence for this,
but I think that Solomon
00:14:01.30\00:14:03.99
probably spend most of
his life even as a young
00:14:04.02\00:14:07.40
man before he was king
hearing about building.
00:14:07.43\00:14:10.72
Because First Kings
8:17 gives us a little clue,

Solomon at the day of
the dedication of the temple.

In First Kings 8:17
says: Now it was in the heart

of my father David to
build a temple for the name

of the Lord God of
Israel. It was in his father's

heart and have you
ever noticed that whatever

is in somebody's heart
is what they talk about.

And I can imagine
conversations perhaps

around the dinner
table or as the family was

gathered together or as
David counseled with his

young man that he
knew that one day would

be the King. Then
David must have told him

of this burning desire
that he had in his heart,

because you know with
David it was a burning

desire and the only
thing that kept David

from building the
temple was the fact that the

Lord told him he
couldn't do it. But

I can imagine all
those years when Solomon

was growing up.
Solomon maybe as a young man

may have said like
some of us have said
00:15:15.34\00:15:17.63
in our experience. I just
wish I didn't have to hear
00:15:17.66\00:15:20.26
anymore about that
temple, that's all dad talks
00:15:20.29\00:15:23.17
about but as Solomon
grew older and Solomon
00:15:23.20\00:15:27.63
saw where the Lord was
leading him that he was
00:15:28.30\00:15:31.21
leading him into the
kingdom. Solomon began
00:15:31.24\00:15:33.25
to accept the
seriousness of it as well,
00:15:33.28\00:15:36.85
Solomon heard about
building and he saw all
00:15:38.40\00:15:41.72
of the preparations
that David had gone through
00:15:41.75\00:15:44.52
for the building and
when Solomon became King one

of the first things
that he did was to set about

answering or breaking into
reality his father's dream.

He set about to built
the temple. When you think

about it, for the kingdom,
for the nation of Israel,

they had finally
arrived. You know what I mean,

for all those hundreds of
years, for the forty years

that they spend
wandering in the desert and

for up until this time
they have had a temporary

sanctuary. A tent
sanctuary and it spoke of,

of a nomadic people.
You remember that the

sanctuary was built
in such away that when

the pillar of cloud or
fire moved that they would

tear the sanctuary
down, it was portable.

And when the pillar
moved, they moved with it

and all these years
since the Exodus they had been,

been remembering that they were,

they were not yet
established in the

promised land. See

the permanent sanctuary,
could they really feel

like they were home.
They had been wondering

all these years,
they had been fighting,

trying to conquer
the Promised Land,

they're had been ups
and downs because when

they were
faithful to God it was up.

When they were
unfaithful to God,

they're had been lots of ups

and downs in the
Israelite experience.

Solomon was going to come

a nomadic people
anymore. They had arrived,

Solomon was building the temple.

beautiful place, lets just read

Now, I wasn't sure what

all kinds of things someone

said that a cubid was the

from his elbow to the tip

class once and somebody

Solomon being just the

smartest man who ever lived.

And the Sabbath
school teacher and elderly

in the temple, because
even his lifetime with all

of this beautiful
temple that he had built.

That was sitting
there shining in the sun;

the decay had
already started to set it.
