Great. 00:14:49.67\00:14:51.83 Praise God for all the good music we've had here. 00:14:51.84\00:14:54.07 I don't know if you're aware of thus but the 00:14:54.88\00:14:57.00 Bible actually tells us that God himself, 00:14:57.01\00:15:02.23 the creator of the universe is a vocalist 00:15:02.24\00:15:05.19 and a songwriter, did you know that? 00:15:05.35\00:15:06.91 Some of you like you're questioning it. 00:15:08.17\00:15:10.01 Zephaniah 3:17, the Lord says very 00:15:10.79\00:15:14.46 clearly, I will quiet you with my love 00:15:14.47\00:15:18.84 I will rejoice over you with singing. 00:15:19.10\00:15:21.90 According to that scripture God is a singer, 00:15:22.85\00:15:25.99 God is a singer, and how do I derive 00:15:27.10\00:15:29.88 that God is also a songwriter, 00:15:29.89\00:15:32.57 I mean come on just think it through for a minute. 00:15:33.00\00:15:34.78 This is the creator of the Universe, 00:15:35.29\00:15:37.45 He is omniscient, he's infinitely wise, 00:15:37.61\00:15:40.13 He is certainly not singing other people songs. 00:15:40.14\00:15:43.29 He is writing his own music, composing it 00:15:44.35\00:15:47.12 and writing his own lyrics and according 00:15:47.41\00:15:49.01 to that scripture not only is God a vocalist 00:15:49.02\00:15:51.54 and a songwriter but guess what? 00:15:52.04\00:15:54.57 We, you and me we're the topic of his song. 00:15:55.73\00:16:00.03 Just like we are down here writing songs 00:16:00.81\00:16:03.14 about God he is composing songs 00:16:03.33\00:16:07.98 about you and me. Can you imagine 00:16:08.33\00:16:11.09 what it's gonna be like to hear God actually sing? 00:16:11.10\00:16:17.11 Doing special music at Sabbath service, 00:16:18.91\00:16:21.69 the special music today will be 00:16:22.28\00:16:23.77 delivered by the creator of the universe, 00:16:23.78\00:16:26.65 Wow that's gonna be incredible. 00:16:28.29\00:16:29.83 I don't know if you know this but the 00:16:30.20\00:16:32.27 ancient Greeks actually had a theory 00:16:32.28\00:16:36.85 that the whole Universe was sung 00:16:37.53\00:16:41.07 into existence by God and the reason they 00:16:41.08\00:16:44.65 arrived at this conclusion is because 00:16:44.66\00:16:46.32 they were mathematicians the Greeks were, and 00:16:46.33\00:16:49.26 they having studied the mathematical 00:16:49.27\00:16:51.99 composition of the Universe and noting 00:16:52.95\00:16:54.88 all the geometric shape, they also then 00:16:55.22\00:16:59.84 noticed that music is mathematical. 00:16:59.85\00:17:02.48 And they said wow maybe God is a 00:17:03.86\00:17:07.13 singer, and maybe the whole Universe is 00:17:07.14\00:17:09.93 created on a musical score. 00:17:09.94\00:17:12.06 It was just an idea they had, 00:17:12.65\00:17:14.09 they weren't reading the scriptures but do 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.25 you know that scripture actually 00:17:16.26\00:17:18.31 hints at this? By the way this 00:17:18.32\00:17:20.38 isn't my topic tonight. Do you know that in 00:17:20.39\00:17:23.57 Job 38 when Job is spoken to by God the 00:17:23.58\00:17:28.24 Lord, the Lord says were you there when 00:17:28.25\00:17:29.33 I laid the foundation of the earth, when the 00:17:29.34\00:17:31.16 morning stars and all the sons of God 00:17:31.54\00:17:34.37 shouted for joy and one version says sang for joy. 00:17:34.72\00:17:38.45 There was singing during the creation process. 00:17:38.99\00:17:43.13 And no doubt God was leading the 00:17:43.80\00:17:45.08 singing, just one more thing on music since 00:17:45.09\00:17:46.95 we've had so much of it here and that is 00:17:46.96\00:17:49.02 there's a scientist right now who has a hunch 00:17:49.03\00:17:52.67 that the Aurora Borealis, you know what that is, 00:17:52.90\00:17:55.70 I'm from Washington State way up north in 00:17:55.71\00:17:58.17 the west and on certain nights we can 00:17:58.18\00:18:00.70 see these beautiful moving, 00:18:00.71\00:18:04.06 living colors of purple and pink and red and 00:18:04.07\00:18:07.92 brushes of white in the far distant 00:18:08.25\00:18:11.34 northern sky, sometimes called the 00:18:11.35\00:18:13.15 northern lights, the Aurora Borealis. 00:18:13.16\00:18:16.28 Well this scientist he has a hunch that the 00:18:16.66\00:18:20.92 Aurora Borealis, as it moves alive in the sky 00:18:20.93\00:18:24.43 with all its color has a musical background 00:18:24.44\00:18:28.59 that it's emitting. So He is right now 00:18:28.60\00:18:30.92 trying to create some kind of device that 00:18:30.93\00:18:35.04 can measure and actually record 00:18:35.05\00:18:38.15 the sounds that are coming from the 00:18:38.42\00:18:40.35 Aurora Borealis interesting huh. 00:18:40.36\00:18:42.57 And finally on music, chapter 32 and verse 7 00:18:43.55\00:18:47.48 of Psalms, it says that God actually delivers 00:18:47.49\00:18:53.77 us with songs of deliverance which is 00:18:53.78\00:18:57.21 another scripture that says God is a singer 00:18:57.22\00:18:59.14 and that he uses song to deliver us, 00:18:59.72\00:19:02.81 well the message tonight is best 00:19:03.23\00:19:06.28 introduced by calling our attention to a little 00:19:06.29\00:19:11.19 considered but very obvious human 00:19:11.20\00:19:14.41 phenomenon that we all experienced. 00:19:14.42\00:19:16.31 As soon as I begin to explain it, 00:19:16.32\00:19:17.75 you'll say yeah exactly. I go through that all 00:19:17.76\00:19:20.06 the time. Now this phenomenon of 00:19:20.07\00:19:23.56 human experience, is sometimes referred 00:19:23.57\00:19:26.03 to with the terminology memory triggers. 00:19:26.04\00:19:29.48 What does it referred to as, memory triggers. 00:19:30.11\00:19:33.11 For example, a simple example, 00:19:33.64\00:19:35.07 you're in your house in one room right, 00:19:35.52\00:19:37.26 and you're on a mission to go do 00:19:38.08\00:19:40.31 something in another room so you take your 00:19:40.32\00:19:42.19 journey into the other room right. 00:19:42.20\00:19:43.70 And when you get there you can't 00:19:44.37\00:19:47.02 remember what in the world you came in the 00:19:47.03\00:19:48.75 room for so what do you do? 00:19:48.76\00:19:50.50 I don't know what you do but I retrace my 00:19:50.70\00:19:52.95 steps back into the other room and what 00:19:52.96\00:19:56.04 am I hoping for, even if I haven't thought it 00:19:56.05\00:19:58.41 through what am I hoping for? 00:19:58.42\00:19:59.87 I'm hoping that I'm going to see something, 00:19:59.88\00:20:02.52 smell something, feel something, 00:20:02.91\00:20:05.22 hear something that will trigger the 00:20:05.50\00:20:07.53 memory of what it is that I went in that room for. 00:20:07.54\00:20:10.76 Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. 00:20:11.10\00:20:13.07 It is a very bothersome experience. 00:20:13.52\00:20:15.98 You've been all through that haven't you? 00:20:16.99\00:20:18.23 But let me give a couple other examples 00:20:18.89\00:20:21.61 one negative and one positive from my own 00:20:21.96\00:20:24.40 experience and you'll begin to identify and 00:20:24.41\00:20:27.48 you'll see why this is important for our 00:20:27.49\00:20:29.75 message this evening. A negative memory 00:20:29.76\00:20:33.33 experience I have, memory trigger 00:20:33.34\00:20:35.56 happened when I was just 14 years old in 00:20:36.59\00:20:40.75 Southern California driving my mom's car 00:20:40.76\00:20:42.63 without a license. And I had a fender-bender, 00:20:42.64\00:20:48.05 I wrecked the car not into a tree, not into a 00:20:49.34\00:20:52.73 stop sign, into another car, 00:20:52.74\00:20:54.55 this was bad, right. And there was a lot of 00:20:55.26\00:20:59.75 emotion involved in the experience, 00:20:59.76\00:21:02.28 the woman jumped out of the car came 00:21:02.80\00:21:04.26 back and she was shouting at the 00:21:04.27\00:21:06.07 window that I just rolled down about an 00:21:06.08\00:21:07.50 inch and I looked up into her eyes 00:21:07.51\00:21:09.83 and she told me so many things. 00:21:09.84\00:21:12.18 But here's what happened when I had 00:21:16.42\00:21:18.88 this very traumatic emotional experience, 00:21:18.89\00:21:23.09 there was a particular song playing on the 00:21:23.51\00:21:25.30 radio, I won't tell you the song because 00:21:25.31\00:21:27.47 I don't want to put it in your memory and 00:21:27.74\00:21:29.16 associate it with this message. 00:21:29.17\00:21:30.68 But there was a particular song on the radio, 00:21:31.33\00:21:33.15 okay that's the kind of experience you want 00:21:33.47\00:21:34.91 to forget it, right. 18 years later I'm 00:21:34.92\00:21:39.23 in an auto parts store and that song's 00:21:39.24\00:21:42.04 playing on the radio and I feel kind of 00:21:42.05\00:21:44.07 uncomfortable, like oh I hate that song 00:21:44.08\00:21:46.88 and in the next second or two I realized why 00:21:47.40\00:21:51.74 I was so uncomfortable with that song because 00:21:52.12\00:21:53.97 I could see that lady's face at the window 00:21:53.98\00:21:56.44 screaming at me and that whole experience 00:21:56.94\00:21:58.99 came back through that one sensory 00:21:59.00\00:22:01.56 stimuli of that auditory trigger, 00:22:01.57\00:22:05.17 that's what sensory stimuli is. 00:22:06.15\00:22:08.76 Every experience that you have as a human 00:22:09.18\00:22:11.25 being, every experience that I have is attached 00:22:11.26\00:22:14.15 to certain sensory stimuli, 00:22:14.74\00:22:16.77 that's happening kind of as a background 00:22:17.04\00:22:19.23 track to life, right. You don't even know 00:22:19.24\00:22:21.70 what's going on around you really but 00:22:21.71\00:22:23.92 as you are there in a given experience you 00:22:23.93\00:22:27.91 are surrounded with sites and there are 00:22:27.92\00:22:31.14 sounds and there are textures and 00:22:31.15\00:22:34.43 there are smells, right. You can feel lumber 00:22:34.44\00:22:38.51 and be brought back 20 years to 00:22:38.98\00:22:40.76 a time in your life. You can hear a song 00:22:40.77\00:22:43.02 and see yourself in the 9th grade that's kind 00:22:43.25\00:22:45.83 of scary, you can just smell something and 00:22:45.84\00:22:50.24 relive on experience from the past. 00:22:50.25\00:22:53.93 Isn't that true? Let me give you a positive one. 00:22:54.30\00:22:55.86 When I was a little boy, us children, 00:22:56.72\00:22:59.32 myself, my two younger brothers, 00:22:59.94\00:23:01.49 my younger sister and a bunch of our 00:23:01.88\00:23:03.30 cousins were spending part of the summer 00:23:03.31\00:23:05.65 at grandma's house. And my grandma was 00:23:05.66\00:23:08.00 the classic grandma she was the real deal. 00:23:08.01\00:23:10.53 She had long gray hair that was twisted 00:23:11.36\00:23:13.57 up in a bun, she made all her own dresses 00:23:13.58\00:23:18.64 from calico material at her sewing machine 00:23:18.65\00:23:20.91 that had a pedal type thing on it with no 00:23:20.92\00:23:23.88 electricity, her teeth were in a jar by the 00:23:23.89\00:23:27.14 bed and she had a loaded shotgun by the front door. 00:23:27.15\00:23:30.43 This was my grandma she was an incredible 00:23:31.70\00:23:33.73 lady and she made these long dresses that 00:23:33.74\00:23:36.97 went all the way down to the ground 00:23:36.98\00:23:38.71 and I remember thinking that grandma 00:23:39.23\00:23:40.59 is so big because they didn't have a dryer, 00:23:40.60\00:23:43.39 and all the clothing was hung on the line 00:23:44.27\00:23:45.98 and I saw grandma's underwear and 00:23:45.99\00:23:49.58 I remember as a little boy looking up and 00:23:49.59\00:23:51.09 thinking oh those are big and it may have 00:23:51.10\00:23:56.67 just been a relative thing because my 00:23:56.68\00:23:59.56 little boy undies were hanging right next to 00:23:59.57\00:24:02.21 hers and by comparison you see 00:24:02.22\00:24:04.31 what I'm saying they looked big. 00:24:04.32\00:24:06.29 So I am at grandma's house this one summer, okay. 00:24:07.28\00:24:09.79 And grandma was a pancake artist. 00:24:10.92\00:24:14.12 Every morning, early in the morning she 00:24:15.13\00:24:16.64 would making what she called cakes on 00:24:16.65\00:24:19.08 the griddle and she would use food 00:24:19.09\00:24:21.61 coloring and they were made to order, 00:24:21.62\00:24:23.65 you could ask for a giraffe, you could ask 00:24:23.66\00:24:25.58 for an elephant, you could ask for 00:24:25.59\00:24:27.31 whatever you wanted and she would make 00:24:27.65\00:24:29.10 shapes on the griddle and turn them over 00:24:29.11\00:24:30.98 and serve them up to the little kids, 00:24:30.99\00:24:33.02 she was such a cool grandma. 00:24:33.62\00:24:34.93 And we were running around while the 00:24:35.76\00:24:37.56 aroma of these pancakes were filling 00:24:37.57\00:24:41.13 the air, and we were playing hide and seek. 00:24:41.14\00:24:44.80 And I was the last little kid standing in 00:24:45.64\00:24:49.04 the kitchen, frantic because all the good 00:24:49.05\00:24:51.59 hiding places were taken and I was 00:24:51.60\00:24:54.02 looking here and there and everywhere 00:24:54.03\00:24:55.43 I didn't know where to go or what to do 00:24:55.44\00:24:57.14 and I could hear my older cousin counting 00:24:57.49\00:25:00.73 and I was about to get caught and grandma 00:25:01.06\00:25:03.70 standing at the stove turning the cakes on 00:25:03.71\00:25:05.55 the griddle she said you want the best 00:25:05.56\00:25:07.25 hiding place ever. And I said yes, I want 00:25:07.26\00:25:11.67 the best hiding place ever. 00:25:11.68\00:25:13.54 And she looked down into my eyes and she 00:25:14.48\00:25:17.49 said I'll let you have this hiding place but 00:25:17.50\00:25:20.12 I'm telling you, I'm commanding 00:25:20.13\00:25:22.32 you do not look up. Now I didn't know 00:25:22.33\00:25:27.83 what she was referring to at this point. 00:25:28.27\00:25:30.78 And I just looked up and I said yes I agree 00:25:32.14\00:25:34.47 to the terms of the contract. 00:25:34.48\00:25:36.11 And just then my grandma lifted her 00:25:37.92\00:25:40.59 calico dress up to reveal her very white 00:25:40.60\00:25:44.19 bonnie grandma knees and she motioned 00:25:44.20\00:25:47.68 with her hand as the count was taking 00:25:47.69\00:25:49.76 place and I knew exactly what to do, 00:25:49.77\00:25:52.62 I crunch down underneath and she 00:25:52.97\00:25:54.90 dropped this panoply around me, 00:25:54.91\00:25:57.06 tell me that's not the best hiding 00:25:59.46\00:26:01.03 place in the world. Nobody is going to be 00:26:01.04\00:26:05.67 lifting up grandma's dress. 00:26:05.68\00:26:07.35 I know as a little boy I will not get caught. 00:26:09.30\00:26:12.80 I know this and I'm just thinking there yes 00:26:13.16\00:26:17.07 and I'm so selfish as little boy I'm thinking 00:26:17.08\00:26:19.25 I hope grandma never shows this hiding 00:26:19.26\00:26:21.44 place to anyone else. And all my cousins 00:26:21.45\00:26:27.13 and my brothers and my sisters looking all 00:26:27.14\00:26:29.68 around they can't find me and times going 00:26:29.69\00:26:32.52 by and she's just standing there, 00:26:32.53\00:26:33.59 flipping cakes on the griddle. 00:26:33.60\00:26:34.76 And they say where is he grandma and she 00:26:37.51\00:26:40.50 says go outside and look and they all ran 00:26:40.51\00:26:43.52 out the doors she lifted her dress 00:26:43.53\00:26:46.26 I emerged and she looked at me and she 00:26:46.27\00:26:47.95 said told you. That was the best 00:26:47.96\00:26:52.22 hiding place and she knew it. 00:26:52.23\00:26:53.93 Now here's the thing that experience is 00:26:54.71\00:26:59.41 relived in my mind, I see my grandma over 00:26:59.42\00:27:04.26 and over again anytime I smell cakes 00:27:04.27\00:27:06.96 on the griddle even at Denny's, 00:27:06.97\00:27:08.78 doesn't matter where am I at, if I smell 00:27:08.79\00:27:10.88 pancakes I think of my grandma 00:27:10.89\00:27:13.49 and that experience. But let me tell you 00:27:13.50\00:27:15.89 that it was also associated with 00:27:15.90\00:27:18.44 something that was very traumatic 00:27:18.45\00:27:20.15 because while we children were running 00:27:20.36\00:27:22.35 around playing hide and seek 00:27:22.36\00:27:23.93 that home, grandma's home was a place of refuge. 00:27:26.42\00:27:31.12 Because my mother was lying on the bed 00:27:31.89\00:27:35.57 in one of grandma's bedrooms having 00:27:36.54\00:27:39.92 escaped from an abusive marriage, 00:27:39.93\00:27:43.12 her face scabbing over, nursing broken ribs 00:27:43.70\00:27:48.31 and so all of that emotion is relived 00:27:49.86\00:27:54.13 in that one memory trigger when I smell 00:27:55.26\00:28:00.28 cakes on the griddle. Are you aware that 00:28:00.29\00:28:05.66 Jesus had a very specific and special 00:28:05.67\00:28:11.92 memory trigger that attended him every 00:28:13.07\00:28:19.45 step of the way through the darkest 00:28:19.46\00:28:22.23 hours of his experience in this world? 00:28:22.89\00:28:26.77 Are you aware that there was a face that 00:28:27.80\00:28:31.38 would come to his memory with every 00:28:31.39\00:28:34.90 gasp of air as he hung on the cross? 00:28:34.91\00:28:38.97 But there was one person one individual 00:28:40.12\00:28:43.94 who embodied what the Gospel potentialed 00:28:43.95\00:28:50.15 in human experience, there was one person 00:28:50.16\00:28:54.15 that gave Jesus deep and abiding hope 00:28:54.99\00:28:59.71 for you and for me. Turn with me in your 00:29:01.11\00:29:04.69 Bibles to Matthew chapter 26 and let's 00:29:04.70\00:29:09.12 note the chronology here, in verse 1, 00:29:09.13\00:29:12.71 now it came to pass when Jesus had 00:29:12.72\00:29:15.97 finished all these sayings that he said to 00:29:15.98\00:29:20.06 his disciples you know that after two 00:29:20.07\00:29:23.21 days, after how long? Two days, after two 00:29:23.22\00:29:25.78 days is the Passover and the son of man 00:29:25.79\00:29:29.27 will be delivered up to be crucified. 00:29:29.28\00:29:32.61 Notice that Jesus explicitly told the 00:29:32.95\00:29:36.71 disciples he would be crucified. 00:29:36.72\00:29:39.49 But they didn't get it. They were still planning 00:29:40.15\00:29:44.35 to crown him King and to rule over the 00:29:45.06\00:29:47.42 Romans and to be seated on the little 00:29:47.43\00:29:49.76 thrones around him. They pushed the 00:29:49.77\00:29:53.13 thought out of their minds, 00:29:53.14\00:29:54.65 they didn't understand what he was talking about. 00:29:54.66\00:29:58.13 And notice that Jesus says that he is going 00:29:59.10\00:30:01.40 to be crucified from the point of this 00:30:01.41\00:30:03.23 declaration in how long? Two days. 00:30:03.24\00:30:07.14 Well then at another part of the little town 00:30:07.76\00:30:10.81 here the chief priests in verse 3 and the 00:30:10.82\00:30:13.69 Scribes and the Elders they've assembled at 00:30:13.70\00:30:16.73 the Palace of Caiaphas, verse 4 says, to plot, 00:30:16.74\00:30:20.53 to take Jesus by trickery and kill him, 00:30:20.54\00:30:23.17 that's was happening across town. 00:30:23.80\00:30:25.63 And then I want you to notice that in verse 00:30:26.97\00:30:29.45 6 Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon 00:30:29.46\00:30:34.57 the Leper, you know who he is, he is a 00:30:34.58\00:30:37.62 Pharisee who had leprosy and Jesus had 00:30:37.63\00:30:40.60 healed him and Jesus was at his house as a 00:30:40.61\00:30:43.60 special honored guest. We're told in another 00:30:43.61\00:30:46.96 gospel and it's filled out in Desire of Ages 00:30:46.97\00:30:49.93 that Lazarus who had been raised from the 00:30:50.30\00:30:52.18 dead was also an honored guest at Simon's feast. 00:30:52.19\00:30:56.01 Jesus was seated in the middle Simon on one 00:30:56.59\00:30:59.40 side Lazarus on the other, this is the picture. 00:30:59.41\00:31:02.88 Now as Simon's feast is unfolding, 00:31:03.84\00:31:06.41 something occurs here that is absolutely straddling. 00:31:06.42\00:31:10.14 You'll notice in verse 7 that a woman came 00:31:11.15\00:31:13.93 to him having an alabaster flask full of 00:31:13.94\00:31:18.00 very costly fragrant oil, notice this oil is 00:31:18.01\00:31:22.74 fragrant and she poured it on his head 00:31:23.25\00:31:27.49 as he sat as he sat at the table. 00:31:27.92\00:31:30.66 Later on down in verse 12 Jesus said 00:31:31.93\00:31:36.43 that she not only poured it on his head 00:31:36.44\00:31:39.15 but on his body and Luke's gospel says 00:31:39.16\00:31:42.03 she also poured it on his feet and mingled 00:31:42.04\00:31:45.81 this precious liquid with a more precious 00:31:45.82\00:31:49.94 liquid, her tears and her tears mingled with 00:31:49.95\00:31:54.31 this fragrant oil, she lathered his feet and 00:31:54.32\00:31:58.24 began to wash and dry his feet with her hair. 00:31:58.25\00:32:02.47 This is the scene, this is the picture and 00:32:03.39\00:32:07.83 Jesus explained something here in verse 12, 00:32:07.84\00:32:11.75 For in pouring this fragrant oil on 00:32:12.33\00:32:14.33 My body, she did it for My burial. 00:32:14.34\00:32:17.84 She is the only one who gets it. 00:32:18.23\00:32:21.14 She is the only one who understands the 00:32:22.03\00:32:24.17 gospel at this point. They're all resisting 00:32:24.18\00:32:27.52 his prophetic words that he will be 00:32:28.15\00:32:30.11 crucified but she knows what's going to happened. 00:32:30.12\00:32:33.62 She anoints His body for burial. 00:32:34.10\00:32:37.12 Now she made a last minute decision, 00:32:37.13\00:32:39.66 she had intended to use this oil believing 00:32:41.18\00:32:45.21 that he would be crucified just like he 00:32:45.22\00:32:46.94 said is the only one who is understanding, 00:32:46.95\00:32:49.02 she intended to use this costly oil to 00:32:49.54\00:32:52.41 anoint his body after death for burial and at 00:32:52.42\00:32:57.12 the last minute she changed her mind 00:32:57.13\00:32:59.65 and for a very crucial reason. 00:33:00.50\00:33:02.32 Mary began to think in her mind, 00:33:04.11\00:33:06.08 I would like the Savior to carry this 00:33:07.63\00:33:12.63 gift of my love to the crucifixion; 00:33:12.64\00:33:17.90 I would like to attend him and remind him 00:33:19.30\00:33:24.59 of my love for him. So at the last minute 00:33:26.08\00:33:30.12 she changed her mind and she said to herself 00:33:30.13\00:33:33.26 I will pour the oil on him while he's still alive. 00:33:33.27\00:33:38.46 Desire of Ages page 560 explains that and 00:33:39.10\00:33:42.03 we'll read it in just a moment. 00:33:42.04\00:33:43.21 Now here's the thing as she was doing this, 00:33:43.51\00:33:47.10 the disciples are just absolutely incensed. 00:33:47.11\00:33:51.41 Why was this very costly oil used in this 00:33:52.50\00:33:55.60 way, and Jesus says to them in so many 00:33:55.61\00:33:59.80 words, this woman understands and you don't. 00:33:59.81\00:34:04.75 I am not going to be with you very 00:34:05.97\00:34:07.90 much longer, the poor you will have 00:34:07.91\00:34:09.66 with you always. Do not reproach 00:34:09.67\00:34:14.02 her for her gift. Now this gets really 00:34:14.03\00:34:17.90 amazing when in verse 13 Jesus says, 00:34:17.91\00:34:21.37 assuredly I say to you that wherever this 00:34:21.38\00:34:25.63 gospel is preached in the whole world what 00:34:25.64\00:34:30.58 this woman has done will be also told 00:34:30.59\00:34:33.45 as a memorial to her. This woman, Mary, 00:34:33.46\00:34:36.87 is the embodiments of what the gospel 00:34:36.88\00:34:41.54 envisions for every human being, 00:34:41.55\00:34:44.55 this woman's experience of extravagant head 00:34:45.05\00:34:49.18 over heels love for the Savior, 00:34:49.19\00:34:52.50 represents what God is seeking to 00:34:52.87\00:34:55.57 reproduce in your life and mine and 00:34:55.58\00:34:58.71 everyone who hears the gospel. 00:34:58.72\00:35:01.49 The gospel wherever it is preached will 00:35:01.86\00:35:05.42 include the telling and the retelling of Mary's 00:35:05.43\00:35:09.86 experience with the Savior, because dear 00:35:09.87\00:35:12.66 friends she is in fact the one who best 00:35:12.67\00:35:19.34 reveals to us what the ultimate reality of 00:35:19.73\00:35:24.83 Christian experience is going to look like 00:35:24.84\00:35:28.19 when it comes to fruition in your life 00:35:28.56\00:35:31.20 and mine. She is the only one who gets it, 00:35:31.21\00:35:33.34 she anoints his body and then what 00:35:33.96\00:35:36.11 happens in verse 17 now the feast, 00:35:36.12\00:35:38.52 on the feast, on the first day of the feast 00:35:38.78\00:35:41.39 of unleavened bread the disciples came to 00:35:41.40\00:35:43.51 Jesus and said, where do you want us to 00:35:43.52\00:35:45.31 prepare to eat the Passover? 00:35:45.32\00:35:47.11 Jesus explains to them in verse 18 that my 00:35:48.53\00:35:51.71 time is at hand. Down in verse 20 00:35:51.72\00:35:56.76 when evening had come He sat down 00:35:56.77\00:35:59.63 with the 12, simultaneously 00:35:59.64\00:36:03.70 as the woman as anointed Jesus Judas 00:36:04.52\00:36:07.54 takes off across town on this mission of betrayal. 00:36:07.55\00:36:10.13 Now please notice that as Jesus eats the 00:36:11.72\00:36:15.46 Passover feast with His disciples 00:36:15.47\00:36:17.67 we have not seen very much time transpire. 00:36:19.47\00:36:23.86 His hair, His beard, His body, His feet, 00:36:25.76\00:36:28.89 His clothing drenched with this fragrant oil, 00:36:29.20\00:36:32.04 every step of the way with every breath 00:36:33.02\00:36:36.14 He remembers this woman's great love. 00:36:37.10\00:36:41.05 Desire of Ages page 560, please note this 00:36:41.06\00:36:43.85 with so much attention and interest 00:36:43.86\00:36:47.84 "The fragrant gift which Mary had 00:36:48.15\00:36:52.08 thought to lavish upon the dead body of our 00:36:52.09\00:36:56.00 Savior, she now poured upon his living form. 00:36:56.01\00:36:59.77 At the burial its sweetness could only 00:37:00.80\00:37:04.43 have pervaded the tomb, now it gladdened his 00:37:04.75\00:37:10.28 heart with the assurance of her faith and love." 00:37:10.29\00:37:14.52 Now notice this, Mary pouring out her love. 00:37:14.53\00:37:20.82 I thought it was fragrant oil, 00:37:20.85\00:37:22.20 well the fragrant oil was just a symbol 00:37:23.51\00:37:27.49 of the outpouring of her affection, 00:37:28.63\00:37:31.24 her love every bit of her passionate energy 00:37:31.42\00:37:35.10 upon her Savior. Mary pouring out her 00:37:35.11\00:37:39.16 love upon the Savior while he was 00:37:39.17\00:37:42.44 conscious of her devotion, you see her agenda? 00:37:42.45\00:37:47.64 Now, was anointing him for burial and as 00:37:48.98\00:37:55.32 He went down into the darkness of his 00:37:55.33\00:37:58.33 great trial he carried with him the memory 00:37:58.34\00:38:03.74 of that deed which was an earnest, 00:38:04.60\00:38:07.83 which means a down payment of the love, 00:38:07.84\00:38:12.94 Ellen White continues, that would be His 00:38:13.32\00:38:16.04 from the redeemed forever. Mary anointed Him 00:38:17.32\00:38:24.97 while He was living and her deed 00:38:24.98\00:38:27.89 represented to the Savior's memory 00:38:28.38\00:38:31.77 a continual, alive sense of the love that would 00:38:32.02\00:38:37.68 be His from all the redeemed, 00:38:37.69\00:38:40.13 an eternity future. Three scriptures that 00:38:40.14\00:38:43.06 seem to point in this direction regarding 00:38:43.07\00:38:45.81 the Savior's hope for the future, 00:38:45.82\00:38:47.52 first of all Isaiah 53 where Jesus poured 00:38:47.97\00:38:51.65 out His soul unto death Isaiah prophesized but 00:38:51.66\00:38:55.26 notice this while he was pouring out his 00:38:55.27\00:38:57.83 soul in death Isaiah says that in the 00:38:57.84\00:39:00.72 process of that infinite sacrifice he could see 00:39:00.73\00:39:06.01 the travail of his soul and he was satisfied. 00:39:06.50\00:39:10.18 Travail meaning the labor of his soul 00:39:10.19\00:39:12.90 giving birth to the new creation of men 00:39:12.91\00:39:16.95 and women in children who would 00:39:16.96\00:39:18.73 experience the reproduction of his 00:39:18.74\00:39:20.69 self-giving love in their hearts and lives. 00:39:20.70\00:39:23.26 Jesus on the cross saw the result of his 00:39:23.81\00:39:29.62 sacrifice and it brought satisfaction to this heart. 00:39:29.63\00:39:32.67 And what about Hebrews chapter 12 00:39:33.41\00:39:35.25 looking unto Jesus, Paul says the author 00:39:36.18\00:39:38.86 and finisher of our faith who for the joy 00:39:38.87\00:39:42.53 that was set before him endured the cross 00:39:43.07\00:39:46.43 despising the shame. What was the joy that 00:39:46.44\00:39:49.55 was set before him, what was it that Jesus 00:39:49.56\00:39:52.68 was conscious of while He endured that 00:39:52.69\00:39:55.36 great suffering that brought Him joy and 00:39:55.37\00:39:57.72 satisfaction? John chapter 17 in his 00:39:57.73\00:40:02.43 prayer to the Father, Jesus explains exactly 00:40:02.44\00:40:06.93 what it is that His heart is looking 00:40:07.31\00:40:10.56 forward to? Please don't miss this, 00:40:10.57\00:40:13.71 chapter 17 of John, Jesus praying to the 00:40:14.93\00:40:17.29 Father, starting with verse 24, Father, 00:40:17.30\00:40:20.06 I desire that they also, whom you have given 00:40:20.07\00:40:24.88 me, may be with me where I am. 00:40:24.89\00:40:29.21 I want you to think for a minute, is there 00:40:29.22\00:40:30.84 anybody in this world, in this life that you 00:40:30.85\00:40:33.98 just like being with. Someone you just like 00:40:33.99\00:40:37.15 hanging out with, a friend, a spouse, 00:40:37.16\00:40:40.13 a grandson, a grandma, your mom, your dad, 00:40:41.24\00:40:48.01 is there anyone you just like being with that, 00:40:48.02\00:40:50.24 I mean you are just totally comfortable in 00:40:50.25\00:40:51.62 their presence and you can just be silent 00:40:51.63\00:40:53.61 with them on a long drive and you're not 00:40:53.62\00:40:55.34 nervous at all, you're just kind of, 00:40:55.35\00:40:56.87 and you can slobber in their presence and 00:40:56.88\00:40:59.56 it doesn't bother you are not self conscious 00:40:59.57\00:41:01.33 in their presence. My wife is like that 00:41:01.34\00:41:03.79 for me, we've been hanging out since she 00:41:03.80\00:41:05.25 was 13 and I was 14 we've never parted 00:41:05.26\00:41:08.18 company, we've been best friends since then 00:41:08.19\00:41:09.69 now we've been married for 26 years. 00:41:09.70\00:41:11.51 I love this lady and know her she loves 00:41:11.86\00:41:14.25 me and knows me and I'll tell you what there 00:41:14.26\00:41:17.46 is nothing like just being with her. 00:41:17.47\00:41:22.59 But that's is exactly what Jesus longs for. 00:41:23.64\00:41:27.21 Jesus says, Father, I want them and put 00:41:27.90\00:41:30.71 your name there because it's very 00:41:30.72\00:41:31.94 personal he knows you by name. 00:41:31.95\00:41:33.68 Jesus says, I desire Father that they 00:41:34.67\00:41:37.03 would be with me. Now he wants us to 00:41:37.04\00:41:39.47 be with Him for a very specific purpose. 00:41:39.48\00:41:42.59 Watch this, I desire that they would be 00:41:43.04\00:41:45.16 with me where I am that they maybe hold 00:41:45.17\00:41:47.48 my glory which you have given me and 00:41:47.49\00:41:50.87 then he defines that glory that we will be 00:41:50.88\00:41:53.11 witnessed to and participants in. 00:41:53.12\00:41:56.16 For you Father loved me before the 00:41:56.58\00:42:00.04 foundation of the world. To the question what 00:42:00.05\00:42:03.62 were the Father, Son and Holy Spirit doing 00:42:03.63\00:42:05.46 before creation, before any humans 00:42:05.47\00:42:08.40 or angels even existed. What were they doing? 00:42:08.41\00:42:11.90 Jesus says, well we were loving each other. 00:42:12.42\00:42:15.07 Father, you loved me before the foundation 00:42:16.26\00:42:18.67 of the world, in all eternal ages passed. 00:42:18.68\00:42:22.16 The Father, Son and Holy Spirit were 00:42:22.37\00:42:23.83 engaged in an incredible circuit, 00:42:23.84\00:42:28.81 Ellen White calls it, of benevolence. 00:42:28.82\00:42:30.95 A circle of constant outgoing self-giving 00:42:31.64\00:42:37.27 love and it is that self- giving other centered 00:42:37.94\00:42:42.20 love that in the fall we forfeited. 00:42:42.21\00:42:45.00 Ellen White defines the essence of the fall 00:42:45.87\00:42:48.20 of mankind in the book Steps to Christ 00:42:48.21\00:42:50.44 with the simple words; she says that 00:42:50.72\00:42:53.41 in the fall "selfishness took the place of love." 00:42:53.42\00:42:57.11 We were created in the image of God's 00:42:58.03\00:43:00.17 love, to love like God's love. 00:43:00.18\00:43:03.44 And in the fall we forfeited that, 00:43:04.96\00:43:06.56 we began to live and to think and feel and 00:43:06.57\00:43:10.19 behave, all for ourselves. And Jesus came into 00:43:10.20\00:43:15.12 the world and he said, Father, 00:43:15.13\00:43:17.14 I want them to be with me where I am 00:43:17.15\00:43:19.77 where you and I in eternity past were 00:43:19.94\00:43:21.88 involved in this constant ebb and flow of 00:43:22.14\00:43:24.43 beautiful relational love but don't miss 00:43:24.44\00:43:28.57 verses 25 and 26. He says, oh righteous 00:43:28.58\00:43:33.00 Father, can you hear the pleading tone in 00:43:33.01\00:43:35.20 his voice, the world has not known you 00:43:35.21\00:43:38.95 what is Jesus diagnoses of our 00:43:38.96\00:43:41.96 problem as human beings. The world doesn't 00:43:41.97\00:43:44.06 know you Father, that's the problem, 00:43:44.07\00:43:46.87 but I have known you and these have known 00:43:47.30\00:43:51.34 that you have sent me. Verse 26, And I have 00:43:51.35\00:43:55.94 declared to them your name Father. Why? 00:43:55.95\00:44:01.04 And will declare it. So that the love with 00:44:02.03\00:44:06.68 which you Father have loved me Jesus 00:44:06.69\00:44:09.63 the son maybe in them and I in them. 00:44:09.64\00:44:14.69 Incredible, Jesus defines the climactic 00:44:15.47\00:44:20.23 reality of the plan of salvation when it 00:44:20.39\00:44:22.20 really comes to the point of what God has in mind. 00:44:22.21\00:44:26.18 Jesus defines the plan of salvation as Jesus 00:44:27.13\00:44:31.69 re-inducting you and me into the love that 00:44:32.32\00:44:37.22 has always existed between the Father 00:44:37.23\00:44:38.96 and Son in eternity past. Jesus says, Father, 00:44:38.97\00:44:42.36 I want them to be sharers and 00:44:42.37\00:44:43.92 participants in this love that they stepped 00:44:43.93\00:44:46.78 out of, I want to bring them back into the 00:44:46.99\00:44:50.04 circle Father and fellowship with 00:44:50.05\00:44:53.00 them for all eternity. What an incredible 00:44:53.01\00:44:57.73 invitation and this is why I'm proclaiming 00:44:57.74\00:45:00.56 the gospel in First John chapter 1, 00:45:00.57\00:45:02.64 it is put in exactly these kind of terms. 00:45:02.94\00:45:05.18 The Apostle John says, that which was 00:45:05.65\00:45:07.42 from the beginning we declare to you that 00:45:07.43\00:45:11.22 you may have fellowship with us 00:45:11.23\00:45:13.93 and truly our fellowship is with the 00:45:13.94\00:45:16.63 Father and his son Jesus Christ. 00:45:16.64\00:45:19.11 John in declaring the gospel says the only 00:45:20.11\00:45:23.27 reason we're preaching the gospel is to bring 00:45:23.28\00:45:25.70 you back into the fellowship of the 00:45:25.71\00:45:28.45 father and the son that fellowship that we as 00:45:28.46\00:45:32.81 the disciples have been experiencing. 00:45:32.82\00:45:34.84 That was the proclamation and Mary was the 00:45:36.07\00:45:40.36 embodiment of that experience. 00:45:40.37\00:45:43.56 She was the first one who understood what 00:45:43.89\00:45:46.43 Jesus was talking about when He 00:45:46.44\00:45:48.67 prophesied of his crucifixion and she 00:45:48.68\00:45:51.46 was in fact the first one at the tomb and 00:45:51.47\00:45:54.67 the first one to actually proclaim 00:45:54.68\00:45:57.43 the gospel to the unbelieving disciples 00:45:57.44\00:46:00.27 when she proclaimed to them. 00:46:00.28\00:46:01.63 He is risen, He is not in the tomb, 00:46:01.98\00:46:04.64 and they said what? Come on I don't think so. 00:46:04.65\00:46:08.30 And they went and looked for themselves. 00:46:08.93\00:46:10.58 She was the one, Mary, lets go back now to 00:46:11.07\00:46:13.76 Matthew chapter 26, now as she had 00:46:13.77\00:46:17.50 anointed his body for burial, Jesus now goes 00:46:17.51\00:46:21.50 into the darkest hours of his experience. 00:46:21.51\00:46:25.89 In verse 34 of chapter 26 of Matthew, 00:46:26.50\00:46:29.41 Jesus said to him to Peter, assuredly I say 00:46:29.42\00:46:32.67 to you that this night before the rooster 00:46:32.68\00:46:36.47 crows you, you Peter, you will deny me. 00:46:36.48\00:46:39.11 And while Jesus prophesied you will 00:46:39.89\00:46:41.85 deny me and he realizes that he will be 00:46:41.86\00:46:43.83 forsaken by all of them that night. 00:46:43.84\00:46:46.46 He remembers that Mary represents what 00:46:49.65\00:46:54.47 maybe for the disciples and for you and me. 00:46:54.48\00:46:59.28 It is the staying power that drives him on. 00:47:00.26\00:47:04.92 Verse 36, Then Jesus came with them to a 00:47:05.50\00:47:08.60 place called Gethsemane, which means olive press, 00:47:08.61\00:47:12.34 place of great pressure and intensity. 00:47:12.35\00:47:15.03 Jesus comes to Gethsemane and here 00:47:15.99\00:47:18.16 from verses 36 to 40 we see Jesus walking 00:47:18.48\00:47:22.45 in to the mount of olives with his 00:47:22.46\00:47:24.64 disciples and He tells them to remain in a 00:47:24.65\00:47:26.51 certain place and pray and then He takes 00:47:26.58\00:47:28.55 three of them, His closest associates, 00:47:28.74\00:47:31.15 Peter, James and John still deeper into the 00:47:32.22\00:47:34.52 heart of Gethsemane to His own special 00:47:34.53\00:47:37.24 place of prayer that He had visited many times. 00:47:37.25\00:47:39.62 And He tells them to pray for Him. 00:47:40.42\00:47:42.78 We're told that it was a full moon that night 00:47:44.30\00:47:46.29 and they could see Him as scripture says 00:47:47.91\00:47:51.37 that He went at stone's cast away 00:47:51.38\00:47:54.16 from them in Luke's gospel. 00:47:54.17\00:47:55.82 He was within eye shot as He staggered 00:47:56.27\00:47:59.39 off to his place of prayer. The disciples are 00:48:00.74\00:48:04.63 amusing, wondering and maybe even 00:48:04.64\00:48:06.39 whispering among themselves why is He 00:48:06.40\00:48:08.47 so burden what's going on? He has just told them 00:48:08.48\00:48:11.98 He is going to be crucified. 00:48:11.99\00:48:13.27 They still don't get it. Jesus breaks in to 00:48:13.40\00:48:16.63 their wonderings and He tells them, verses 00:48:16.64\00:48:20.89 37 and 38, And He took with Him Peter 00:48:20.90\00:48:23.75 and the two sons of Zebedee, and He 00:48:23.96\00:48:25.98 began to be deeply distressed. 00:48:25.99\00:48:29.52 And He said to them, "My soul is 00:48:30.13\00:48:33.51 exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. 00:48:33.52\00:48:37.00 Stay here and watch with Me." 00:48:37.33\00:48:38.86 Notice Jesus directs their attention to an 00:48:40.23\00:48:44.57 internal agony that He's beginning to experience. 00:48:44.58\00:48:48.16 Notice that nothing has happened as of 00:48:49.20\00:48:51.29 yet to bring physical torture upon them. 00:48:51.30\00:48:53.63 Is that right? There is no whip that has been 00:48:54.71\00:48:58.68 applied to His back yet, He has not been 00:48:58.69\00:49:01.63 struck by the Roman soldiers, nails have 00:49:01.64\00:49:04.84 not been driven through His hands, 00:49:04.85\00:49:07.03 the crown of thorns has not yet been 00:49:07.50\00:49:09.63 pressed upon His brow and yet Jesus 00:49:09.64\00:49:12.22 says, I'm dying right here, right now in the 00:49:12.23\00:49:18.34 quietude of this midnight serene 00:49:18.35\00:49:20.65 garden, my soul is exceedingly sorrowful 00:49:20.66\00:49:24.26 even to the point of death. 00:49:24.27\00:49:26.98 It's interesting that the word soul there in the 00:49:26.99\00:49:29.05 Greek is the Greek word psuche, 00:49:29.06\00:49:32.15 from which we get the English word psyche, 00:49:32.84\00:49:34.57 which refers to the mind. And it's also interesting 00:49:35.14\00:49:39.26 to note that this experience of Jesus 00:49:39.27\00:49:43.52 happening on an internal level, 00:49:43.53\00:49:45.72 it's spoken of multiple times 00:49:46.45\00:49:48.66 throughout scripture. Isaiah 53, I already 00:49:48.67\00:49:51.61 cited says, that He poured out His soul unto death. 00:49:51.62\00:49:55.53 Isaiah 53 is the premier Old Testament prophecy 00:49:56.69\00:50:00.10 of the sufferings of Messiah and it does 00:50:00.45\00:50:02.78 not make even a single mention of 00:50:02.79\00:50:04.35 physical suffering. It says rather all we 00:50:04.36\00:50:07.63 like sheep have gone astray, we have turned 00:50:07.64\00:50:09.95 everyone to His own way and the Lord had 00:50:09.96\00:50:12.32 laid on Him psychologically. 00:50:12.33\00:50:15.63 Not a bag on his back, that's not 00:50:16.54\00:50:19.19 how sin is packaged. Sin is a psychological 00:50:19.20\00:50:23.45 behavioral reality, sin is upon Him, 00:50:23.89\00:50:27.35 whose sin, all we like sheep have gone astray, 00:50:27.36\00:50:29.99 we have turned everyone to his own 00:50:30.22\00:50:31.94 way and the Lord has laid on Him the 00:50:31.95\00:50:33.83 iniquity of us all. In the garden of 00:50:33.84\00:50:37.78 Gethsemane Jesus begins to experience 00:50:37.79\00:50:40.23 the full ramifications of the sin problem. 00:50:40.24\00:50:43.10 He takes into His person, into His what 00:50:43.53\00:50:46.89 does He say, His psyche. Jesus takes into His 00:50:46.90\00:50:50.59 heart and mind. The full blown reality 00:50:50.60\00:50:53.89 of the collective whole of all human 00:50:53.90\00:50:58.12 transgression in sin. He begins to so 00:50:58.13\00:51:01.71 deeply and personally identify with the 00:51:01.72\00:51:04.77 fallen human race that, well, what does 00:51:04.78\00:51:08.82 Paul say in Second Corinthians 5:21, 00:51:08.83\00:51:11.88 Second Corinthians 5:21, He who knew 00:51:11.89\00:51:15.61 no sin became sin for us. The very thing itself 00:51:15.62\00:51:21.56 in all it's ugliness, he took your sin and 00:51:22.03\00:51:27.87 mine, Jesus began in Gethsemane, 00:51:27.88\00:51:30.52 to stand before the Father and before His 00:51:30.81\00:51:34.50 Holy Law, as if He Himself were the 00:51:34.51\00:51:38.72 guilty party in every sin ever committed 00:51:38.73\00:51:42.08 by every human being in all of history. 00:51:42.56\00:51:44.86 Every rape, every active child abuse, 00:51:45.69\00:51:48.76 every murder, every lie, every malicious 00:51:48.77\00:51:51.45 thought, every jealousy, every backbiting 00:51:51.46\00:51:54.51 gossiping tongue, every war, 00:51:54.52\00:51:58.08 every holocaust, Jesus bore the iniquity of us 00:51:58.09\00:52:06.02 all as He entered Gethsemane and 00:52:07.11\00:52:11.92 trudged forward to the cross. 00:52:11.93\00:52:13.65 Now dear friends, they're in the garden 00:52:14.58\00:52:17.92 as He begins to bear your sin and mine. 00:52:18.66\00:52:21.55 The Bible says in verse 39 He went a 00:52:22.94\00:52:25.74 little farther from the disciples where they 00:52:25.75\00:52:28.15 were and fell on His face, praying, "Father, 00:52:28.16\00:52:36.54 if it is possible let this cup pass from Me, 00:52:37.78\00:52:42.22 nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will". 00:52:42.23\00:52:44.92 What is this struggle what is this internal 00:52:46.26\00:52:48.13 agony he's experiencing, what is this cup? 00:52:48.14\00:52:51.77 It's obviously not a literal cup with literal 00:52:52.20\00:52:54.79 beverage of some kind in it, 00:52:54.80\00:52:56.19 it's a metaphor and it's mentioned one other 00:52:56.36\00:53:00.84 place in scripture that is highly significant in 00:53:00.85\00:53:03.89 this context and none other than the third 00:53:03.90\00:53:07.68 angels message, where scripture says 00:53:08.28\00:53:12.43 in Revelation 14 tha those who worship 00:53:12.44\00:53:15.86 the beast in his image shall drink of the cup 00:53:15.87\00:53:20.65 of the wine of the wrath of God which is 00:53:21.36\00:53:24.50 poured out without mixture in parentheses mercy, 00:53:24.51\00:53:30.42 no mercy. The cup Jesus that Jesus is 00:53:30.43\00:53:35.74 trembling to drink here is the cup of the 00:53:35.75\00:53:39.02 wrath of God against sin. He's experiencing the 00:53:39.03\00:53:43.84 totality of the sin problem in Himself 00:53:43.85\00:53:47.65 and the massive gap between a Holy God 00:53:48.06\00:53:52.23 and fallen sinful humanity. He feels it to the 00:53:52.24\00:53:56.58 depths of His being and He begins 00:53:56.59\00:53:58.91 according to Psalm 88 to be enveloped in a 00:53:58.92\00:54:03.35 darkness that is so impenetrable in his 00:54:03.36\00:54:07.55 mind that Jesus in Psalm 88 and verse 8 00:54:07.56\00:54:11.57 portrayed there in this messianic prophesy 00:54:12.05\00:54:14.25 Jesus cries out in His soul on the cross, 00:54:14.61\00:54:18.20 I'm shut up and I cannot come forth. 00:54:18.21\00:54:21.64 That is to say, Jesus could not for a 00:54:22.93\00:54:25.86 sustained period of time He could not see 00:54:25.87\00:54:28.26 through the portals of the tomb. 00:54:28.27\00:54:29.60 Bright hope did not present to Him, 00:54:30.03\00:54:31.54 His coming forth from the grave as a 00:54:31.55\00:54:32.89 conqueror or the restoration of His 00:54:32.90\00:54:35.32 Father's approving smile. There was a sustained 00:54:35.33\00:54:37.89 period of time when Jesus could not see 00:54:37.90\00:54:43.50 life for Himself beyond the grave. 00:54:44.00\00:54:47.51 And yet He told to Peter, no one takes 00:54:48.99\00:54:54.55 my life from Me, if I wanted to Peter, 00:54:54.56\00:54:56.77 I can call and the Father would send 12 00:54:56.78\00:54:59.65 12 legions of angels to deliver me in verse 53. 00:54:59.66\00:55:02.49 Jesus' back was not against the law, 00:55:04.03\00:55:06.28 His love held Him there to the cross as he cried 00:55:07.20\00:55:10.01 out my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:55:10.02\00:55:13.71 And what kind of love was it? 00:55:15.85\00:55:17.19 Well it wasn't a silly light hearted 00:55:17.96\00:55:19.88 sentimentalism, I'll tell you that. 00:55:19.89\00:55:21.51 It was a love according to scripture that is the 00:55:22.20\00:55:26.38 most powerful principle in the Universe, the 00:55:26.39\00:55:29.61 very core of the divine identity. 00:55:29.62\00:55:31.79 God's character as a whole according to 00:55:32.53\00:55:35.69 the scripture is love, God is love and Jesus 00:55:35.70\00:55:40.04 proved at the cross that He literally loves 00:55:40.05\00:55:42.98 you and me more than his own eternal 00:55:42.99\00:55:45.58 existence, have never called for deliverance 00:55:45.59\00:55:50.06 but followed straight through the entire 00:55:50.42\00:55:52.71 course of the gamut of guilt and suffering, 00:55:53.09\00:55:57.25 for what purpose again? For the joy of 00:55:58.73\00:56:03.88 restoring you and me to eternal fellowship 00:56:03.89\00:56:08.08 with himself and with every gasp of air as 00:56:08.69\00:56:12.37 He hung on the cross that hope came 00:56:12.38\00:56:17.45 vividly before His mind again and again 00:56:17.46\00:56:20.28 and the memory trigger fired and there 00:56:23.16\00:56:25.65 was Mary upon His heart, somebody gets it, 00:56:25.66\00:56:30.33 somebody knows, somebody has 00:56:30.75\00:56:33.17 experienced my love and has reproduced in 00:56:33.18\00:56:35.75 her life and there will be others Jesus knew, 00:56:36.40\00:56:41.54 there would be others who would get it and 00:56:42.39\00:56:45.92 who would experience it, he knew and then on 00:56:45.93\00:56:49.61 resurrection morning because after all she 00:56:49.62\00:56:51.63 did anoint Hi body for the burial. 00:56:51.64\00:56:54.37 you imagine the first few seconds of his 00:56:55.59\00:56:57.63 consciousness because what's the first thing 00:56:57.64\00:56:59.70 you do even though you've never 00:56:59.71\00:57:01.14 experienced it when you are resurrected, 00:57:01.15\00:57:03.13 when you come back to life what's the first 00:57:03.45\00:57:04.75 thing you do? You breathe, 00:57:04.76\00:57:08.06 praise the Lord. Jesus opened His eyes 00:57:10.06\00:57:13.55 and took his first breath and the 00:57:13.56\00:57:16.56 fragrant oil reminded Him again of Mary's 00:57:16.57\00:57:22.08 love and potentially your love and mine 00:57:22.09\00:57:28.00 all eternity future. Dear Father God, we 00:57:28.01\00:57:32.21 so love you for who you are thank you for 00:57:32.22\00:57:35.71 your mercy, save us dear God by your 00:57:35.72\00:57:39.31 grace and reproduce in us the same love 00:57:39.32\00:57:45.91 that we see represented in Mary. 00:57:46.53\00:57:48.68 And it is in Jesus name we pray, amen. 00:57:50.06\00:57:55.08
