Good morning and happy Sabbath. 00:01:00.81\00:01:03.29 Today I have the honor and privilege to introduce 00:01:03.30\00:01:06.83 to you our speaker today. Our speaker today is 00:01:06.84\00:01:10.53 Chester Clark. Now there are many things I could 00:01:10.54\00:01:13.06 say about Chester. Many stories I could tell, 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.64 but I do not want the introduction to take 00:01:15.65\00:01:17.49 longer than the sermon. Chester has impacted 00:01:17.50\00:01:20.75 many lives and especially mine. 00:01:20.76\00:01:24.20 But the thing that I want to stress most about 00:01:24.21\00:01:26.64 Chester is his character. Chester is one of the 00:01:26.65\00:01:29.90 most humble down to earth Godly man I know. 00:01:29.91\00:01:34.23 He has a passion for young people and a 00:01:34.24\00:01:37.17 strong desire to finish the work. 00:01:37.18\00:01:40.15 And he stands up for his principles and is strong. 00:01:40.16\00:01:44.11 And so today it is my privilege to introduce 00:01:44.12\00:01:46.89 to you the speaker, Chester Clark. 00:01:46.90\00:01:49.35 We have the privilege as ASI family to hear what 00:01:49.36\00:01:52.49 he has sharing and what God has spoken 00:01:52.50\00:01:54.50 on his heart. So let us pray for Chester and 00:01:54.51\00:01:58.25 continue to pray for him as he shares 00:01:58.26\00:02:00.97 what God has placed upon his heart. 00:02:00.98\00:02:04.93 Amen. Percy, it's the roughest, 00:06:03.01\00:06:10.15 weediest most miserable thing I've ever seen. 00:06:10.16\00:06:14.62 It does me up and makes me sick, 00:06:14.63\00:06:17.97 the whole thought of it. Let's pray. 00:06:17.98\00:06:22.10 Father in heaven, today we want to hear a 00:06:22.94\00:06:26.13 message from you. We pray that as we consider 00:06:26.14\00:06:30.14 the history of ASI. As we consider the history 00:06:30.15\00:06:35.61 of our pioneers that we might learn lessons 00:06:35.62\00:06:39.21 that will make us faithful in these last days. 00:06:39.22\00:06:44.14 We thank you in Jesus name, amen. 00:06:44.15\00:06:47.97 In the early 1900s Ellen White was encouraging 00:06:47.98\00:06:51.91 her son Edson to do a work for the under 00:06:51.92\00:06:54.62 privileged neglected self. Edson built a 00:06:54.63\00:06:57.67 boat in Allegan, Michigan and named it the 00:06:57.68\00:07:00.09 Morning Star. From Allegan, he piloted 00:07:00.10\00:07:02.84 his craft up the Kalamazoo River to Lake Michigan, 00:07:02.85\00:07:06.66 across to Chicago, through the Chicago Canal 00:07:06.67\00:07:10.17 and then down the Illinois River to the 00:07:10.18\00:07:13.61 mighty Mississippi. Incidentally while in the 00:07:13.62\00:07:17.84 state of Mississippi, Edson was arrested 00:07:17.85\00:07:20.86 for not having a proper marine pilot's license. 00:07:20.87\00:07:24.61 But the judge let him go as soon as the nature 00:07:24.62\00:07:27.17 of his work was made known and yes Edson did 00:07:27.18\00:07:29.95 obtain the proper license. From the Mississippi, 00:07:29.96\00:07:33.74 Edson piloted his boat now up to the Ohio 00:07:33.75\00:07:37.20 and Cumberland Rivers to near the Nashville area. 00:07:37.21\00:07:41.55 In 1904 Edson convinced his mother to go with 00:07:41.56\00:07:45.71 him on a trip up the Cumberland River so 00:07:45.72\00:07:49.00 she could see first hand the conditions of poverty 00:07:49.01\00:07:52.34 and hardship, he had been telling her about. 00:07:52.35\00:07:55.28 At 2 pm on a June afternoon the Morning 00:07:55.29\00:07:59.30 Start lifted anchor and began going upstream 00:07:59.31\00:08:02.81 into the current. Later that afternoon 00:08:02.82\00:08:06.27 however the Morning Star broke down had 00:08:06.28\00:08:09.17 to be towed to the shore. While repairs 00:08:09.18\00:08:12.88 were made Mrs. White and a W.O Palmer went 00:08:12.89\00:08:16.57 a shore to see a property they'd heard about. 00:08:16.58\00:08:19.32 They found a farm overgrown with brush, 00:08:19.33\00:08:22.87 full of gullies and in general, pretty well 00:08:22.88\00:08:25.97 run down. Upon their return to the Morning Star, 00:08:25.98\00:08:31.13 Mrs. White announced to Sutherland and 00:08:31.14\00:08:33.84 McGann whom she had brought along on the trip. 00:08:33.85\00:08:36.29 There's a farm here the Lord wants you to have 00:08:36.30\00:08:40.17 to start your school. That was just what 00:08:40.18\00:08:43.93 Sutherland and McGann did not want to hear. 00:08:43.94\00:08:47.34 They'd heard about the place, it was a miserable 00:08:47.35\00:08:49.75 piece of property and they thought it was too big. 00:08:49.76\00:08:53.03 Absolutely not, it is out of the question, 00:08:53.04\00:08:57.49 they answered. For three consecutive mornings 00:08:57.50\00:09:02.07 Mrs. White repeated her statement, 00:09:02.08\00:09:04.72 the Lord wants you to have the Nelson place 00:09:04.73\00:09:08.55 and to start a training school there. 00:09:08.56\00:09:11.29 On the third morning, she ordered the boat to 00:09:11.30\00:09:14.37 turn around and go back down stream to 00:09:14.38\00:09:16.50 Edgefield Junction so they could have 00:09:16.51\00:09:18.19 another look. But Sutherland and McGann 00:09:18.20\00:09:21.51 refused to go see the farm. Mrs. White had Will 00:09:21.52\00:09:26.52 Palmer again take her to see the Nelson place. 00:09:26.53\00:09:30.48 When she returned she had already spoken with 00:09:30.49\00:09:34.34 the owners about buying the farm. 00:09:34.35\00:09:37.53 Sutherland and McGann only sulked. 00:09:37.54\00:09:41.75 Well Mrs. White said, then you go and find 00:09:41.76\00:09:48.45 a place that will suit you, but the Lord wants, 00:09:48.46\00:09:53.24 but my brothers this is what the Lord wants 00:09:53.25\00:09:56.85 you to have. Now Ed and Percy had a decision 00:09:56.86\00:10:01.38 to make, didn't they? They'd always said they 00:10:01.39\00:10:04.24 believed in the counsels of Sister White. 00:10:04.25\00:10:06.94 And now they had to make a decision, 00:10:06.95\00:10:09.55 would they follow what she was counseling them 00:10:09.56\00:10:12.64 or would they follow their own inclinations 00:10:12.65\00:10:15.75 and ideas. The two of them took a horse 00:10:15.76\00:10:20.16 and buggy and finally put foot on the farm. 00:10:20.17\00:10:24.12 It was worse then they had heard. 00:10:24.13\00:10:26.63 The topsoil was so depleted that limestone rocks 00:10:26.64\00:10:31.13 were jutting out of the fields. Near a pile of 00:10:31.14\00:10:34.75 rubble what had once been these cabins for 00:10:34.76\00:10:38.39 600 slaves Percy and Ed sat down on a pile 00:10:38.40\00:10:44.65 of rocks and literally wept. Percy had said, 00:10:44.66\00:10:52.96 it is the roughest, weediest, most miserable 00:10:52.97\00:10:58.10 thing I've ever seen. It does me up and makes 00:10:58.11\00:11:02.50 me sick the whole thought of it. 00:11:02.51\00:11:05.45 To make a long story short, God blessed the 00:11:07.89\00:11:11.10 faithfulness of these two men when they followed 00:11:11.11\00:11:13.89 inspired counsel. They bought the farm. 00:11:13.90\00:11:17.78 Madison was one of many, many educational 00:11:17.79\00:11:21.39 institutions began in the United States in the 00:11:21.40\00:11:24.29 early 1900s. But in less than 50 years this 00:11:24.30\00:11:27.38 small school reached international renown. 00:11:27.39\00:11:30.89 In May of 1938 the Readers Digest carried 00:11:30.90\00:11:35.11 an articled entitled Self Supporting College. 00:11:35.12\00:11:38.65 Lotting the accomplishments 00:11:38.66\00:11:40.65 and principles of Madison, the New York 00:11:40.66\00:11:43.44 Times carried a, sent a reporter and photographer 00:11:43.45\00:11:46.91 and then carried a feature article on Madison. 00:11:46.92\00:11:50.32 Newspapers around the nation soon followed suit. 00:11:50.33\00:11:53.60 The St. Louis Post-Dispatch 00:11:53.61\00:11:56.04 ran a two page pictorial spread on Madison. 00:11:56.05\00:11:59.84 Eleanor Roosevelt, first lady of the 00:11:59.85\00:12:02.19 United States, at the request of the 00:12:02.20\00:12:05.44 United States secretary of state interviewed 00:12:05.45\00:12:08.78 some of the faculty of Madison, and wrote about 00:12:08.79\00:12:13.63 it in glowing terms in her syndicated column. 00:12:13.64\00:12:17.15 One of the things she mentions in her column 00:12:17.16\00:12:20.60 is that of 1000 Madison graduates interviewed. 00:12:20.61\00:12:25.54 It was found that not a single one of them had 00:12:25.55\00:12:29.50 had to turn to either private or government 00:12:29.51\00:12:32.55 agencies for help during the great depression. 00:12:32.56\00:12:35.68 Amen. That my friends was a testimony of true 00:12:35.69\00:12:39.22 education. Dr. Phillip P. Claxton, United States 00:12:39.23\00:12:43.51 Commissioner of Education under three 00:12:43.52\00:12:45.88 presidents Taft, Wilson and Harding said this. 00:12:45.89\00:12:49.37 I have seen schools of all grades in many 00:12:49.38\00:12:52.29 countries but none more interesting than this. 00:12:52.30\00:12:56.16 No where else have I seen so much accomplished 00:12:56.17\00:12:58.91 with so little money. The educational work of this 00:12:58.92\00:13:02.15 school does not stop itself. Former students 00:13:02.16\00:13:05.55 have opened elementary schools in the Hill Country 00:13:05.56\00:13:07.80 near Nashville and in the mountains of Tennessee, 00:13:07.81\00:13:10.93 the Carolinas, Georgia, Kentucky and Alabama. 00:13:10.94\00:13:14.04 Their spirit and methods are the same. 00:13:14.05\00:13:17.04 They are self sustaining, except 00:13:17.05\00:13:19.22 for a small amount of money necessary for the 00:13:19.23\00:13:21.83 purchase of the land and buildings. 00:13:21.84\00:13:24.18 These smaller schools alone would justify all the 00:13:24.19\00:13:29.60 cost of the school at Madison." These smaller 00:13:29.61\00:13:35.70 schools described here by the United States 00:13:35.71\00:13:37.96 Commissioner of Education became known as the 00:13:37.97\00:13:41.26 units of Madison. Fletcher, Pisgah, Highland 00:13:41.27\00:13:47.38 Academies are some of the best known units 00:13:47.39\00:13:49.55 still continuing down to this day. 00:13:49.56\00:13:51.96 One of the units was located right here 00:13:51.97\00:13:54.39 near the Louisville area. In 1924 a group of 00:13:54.40\00:13:57.82 nurses bought a piece of property outside the 00:13:57.83\00:14:00.72 city with only a log cabin they began 00:14:00.73\00:14:03.43 a training school, a sanitary, in which later 00:14:03.44\00:14:06.14 it became a hospital. Many Madison graduates 00:14:06.15\00:14:08.95 were involved in the establishment and 00:14:08.96\00:14:10.74 development of the PV Valley project and 00:14:10.75\00:14:15.41 this summer, 83 years later your young people, 00:14:15.42\00:14:20.53 your youth for Jesus stayed in the classrooms 00:14:20.54\00:14:23.30 and aid in the cafeteria of the 00:14:23.31\00:14:24.90 PV Valley Junior Academy. 00:14:24.91\00:14:27.19 On Tuesday evening a beautiful baptismal 00:14:27.20\00:14:30.20 service was held in the PV Valley Seventh-day 00:14:30.21\00:14:32.52 Adventist church. And the ripples from the 00:14:32.53\00:14:35.13 little school at Madison traveled on. 00:14:35.14\00:14:38.28 Today Madison itself is no more, many of the 00:14:38.29\00:14:44.59 units are gone. But where those hardworking 00:14:44.60\00:14:49.45 practically trained young people went 00:14:49.46\00:14:52.26 and worked and lived. Today there 00:14:52.27\00:14:55.16 are Seventh-day Adventist churches. 00:14:55.17\00:14:57.42 And these churches scattered through out 00:14:57.43\00:14:59.40 the South East from Indiana to Florida and 00:14:59.41\00:15:02.43 from Virginia to Mississippi and 00:15:02.44\00:15:04.41 in ASI itself, the legacy of Madison continues. 00:15:04.42\00:15:09.59 Now I'm not here this morning to tell you that 00:15:09.60\00:15:11.89 Madison was a perfect place nor that it has a 00:15:11.90\00:15:15.70 perfect history. But we recognize that the story 00:15:15.71\00:15:19.37 of Madison in many ways the history of ASI. 00:15:19.38\00:15:23.72 In 1947, many of these so called units of Madison 00:15:23.73\00:15:28.15 were officially associated to the Adventist Church 00:15:28.16\00:15:31.71 through a new liaison organization called the 00:15:31.72\00:15:34.55 association of self supporting institutions. 00:15:34.56\00:15:37.83 Now in its 60th year ASI is celebrating 00:15:37.84\00:15:42.22 it's Madison roots throughout this 00:15:42.23\00:15:44.68 convention weekend. I'm sure you've seen 00:15:44.69\00:15:47.30 the summer issue of ASI magazine on 00:15:47.31\00:15:49.83 its cover Dr. E.A. Sutherland. 00:15:49.84\00:15:52.41 In the next few minutes I have you this morning, 00:15:52.42\00:15:55.13 I want to share with you principles 00:15:55.14\00:15:58.35 I found in the lives of the founders of Madison. 00:15:58.36\00:16:02.23 Principles upon which they built a legacy that 00:16:02.24\00:16:05.07 continues down to our day, principles that 00:16:05.08\00:16:07.85 I believe you and I need to keep at the very heart 00:16:07.86\00:16:11.87 and soul of ASI. Principle number one, 00:16:11.88\00:16:16.61 self supporting ministers. 00:16:16.62\00:16:20.95 Turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 28 00:16:20.96\00:16:24.26 and verses 19 and 20. Matthew chapter 28 00:16:24.27\00:16:28.99 and verses 19 and 20,. you know these verses, 00:16:29.00\00:16:33.18 they are familiar to all of us here at ASI, 00:16:33.19\00:16:36.74 Jesus says all power is given to me in heaven 00:16:36.75\00:16:40.06 and earth and He says in verse 19, Go Ye therefore 00:16:40.07\00:16:43.79 and teach all nations, baptizing them in the 00:16:43.80\00:16:46.82 name of the Father and of the Son and of the 00:16:46.83\00:16:48.33 Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all 00:16:48.34\00:16:50.57 things what so ever I've commanded you 00:16:50.58\00:16:52.32 and low I'm with you all way even unto the 00:16:52.33\00:16:55.76 end of the world. The founders of Madison 00:16:55.77\00:16:58.33 believe that these words this commission devolved 00:16:58.34\00:17:02.62 upon each member of the church of Christ, 00:17:02.63\00:17:05.38 can somebody say amen. This is not describing 00:17:05.39\00:17:08.49 the work of the ministers alone, but of each of 00:17:08.50\00:17:11.30 us as we become a part of the body of Christ. 00:17:11.31\00:17:15.51 Madison trained very few pastors intentionally 00:17:15.52\00:17:19.91 that is, in the early days especially very few 00:17:19.92\00:17:23.04 graduates went to work for the denomination. 00:17:23.05\00:17:25.45 Frankly, the Church itself didn't have the money 00:17:25.46\00:17:28.39 to hire many of them. But they went to 00:17:28.40\00:17:31.65 work anyway. You see the first principle 00:17:31.66\00:17:36.11 of Madison was that you didn't have to be paid 00:17:36.12\00:17:40.35 to work for God. Amen. They had the audacious 00:17:40.36\00:17:43.84 idea that lay people could share Christ in 00:17:43.85\00:17:47.18 their marketplace. While working as a nurse, 00:17:47.19\00:17:50.56 a plumber or a pediatrician or a 00:17:50.57\00:17:52.90 carpenter they could enter a town and by toil 00:17:52.91\00:17:56.42 economy and self-sacrifice build up a Church, 00:17:56.43\00:18:00.37 a Church of the testimony to the message 00:18:00.38\00:18:03.03 for our day. The first principle of Madison's 00:18:03.04\00:18:06.12 enduring legacy as I see it is also found in 00:18:06.13\00:18:10.00 Desire of Ages page 195, it says this, 00:18:10.01\00:18:12.97 every true disciple is born into the Kingdom 00:18:12.98\00:18:16.23 of God as a missionary. That my friends is the 00:18:16.24\00:18:21.03 foundation of ASI. It is the principle that every 00:18:21.04\00:18:28.05 person has a work to do, not that they are 00:18:28.06\00:18:30.75 all to be on the Church's payroll you understand, 00:18:30.76\00:18:32.81 but it's the priesthood of all believers, 00:18:32.82\00:18:34.74 it's the principle that the work of God will 00:18:34.75\00:18:36.57 never be finished by the paid ministry alone. 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.95 It's the principle that lay people can sacrifice 00:18:38.96\00:18:41.79 an evening each week to hold a Bible study, 00:18:41.80\00:18:44.12 lay people can take of their own funds 00:18:44.13\00:18:46.14 to buy literature and to give it to their 00:18:46.15\00:18:48.71 associates and co-workers. 00:18:48.72\00:18:50.45 It's a principle that is still desperately needed 00:18:50.46\00:18:53.90 in the Seventh-day Adventist church today, 00:18:53.91\00:18:55.69 would you agree? Amen. It doesn't mean that 00:18:55.70\00:19:00.49 we all have to be missionaries. 00:19:00.50\00:19:02.28 But today I want to remind you that 00:19:02.29\00:19:04.56 we need an army of young people who will 00:19:04.57\00:19:07.75 be rightly trained. Not all becoming pastors 00:19:07.76\00:19:10.80 or evangelists, but no matter what they're 00:19:10.81\00:19:13.17 trained to do, no matter what the work they 00:19:13.18\00:19:16.43 are trained to support themselves by they must 00:19:16.44\00:19:19.66 also be effectively trained to share Christ 00:19:19.67\00:19:23.89 as they support themselves. 00:19:23.90\00:19:25.81 The principle of self-supporting 00:19:25.82\00:19:28.44 ministers is one of the foundational 00:19:28.45\00:19:32.35 principles of Madison. You see my friends, 00:19:32.36\00:19:36.94 if we fail to teach our young people to do 00:19:36.95\00:19:40.54 more than just make money, they won't be 00:19:40.55\00:19:44.44 a part of ASI someday. They'll just 00:19:44.45\00:19:48.37 be making money. Every Adventist young 00:19:48.38\00:19:52.11 person deserves the right to be trained not 00:19:52.12\00:19:55.00 only to make a living but to work for Jesus while 00:19:55.01\00:19:58.36 they support themselves. 00:19:58.37\00:19:59.71 The first principle is the principle of 00:19:59.72\00:20:02.80 self-supporting ministers. Principle number two, 00:20:02.81\00:20:06.08 mission first, institutions second. 00:20:06.09\00:20:11.77 I find this very interesting in the 00:20:11.78\00:20:13.63 history of Madison but it comes through 00:20:13.64\00:20:15.72 loud and clear. Matthew 24 verse 14 00:20:15.73\00:20:19.74 you know the story these are great Adventist's 00:20:19.75\00:20:21.85 verses and this and these institutions shall 00:20:21.86\00:20:25.73 be built in all the world for a witness to all 00:20:25.74\00:20:28.62 nations is that what it says and as gospel 00:20:28.63\00:20:31.82 of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the 00:20:31.83\00:20:33.68 world for a witness into all nations and then 00:20:33.69\00:20:36.73 the end shall come. Now don't get me wrong 00:20:36.74\00:20:39.93 I believe in institutions but institutions are a 00:20:39.94\00:20:43.94 means to an end and there late 1980s 00:20:43.95\00:20:47.40 Ed Sutherland sold his pony named Mouse 00:20:47.41\00:20:51.13 to raise enough money to go to school in 00:20:51.14\00:20:54.31 Battle Creek. In 1888 he met a young man 00:20:54.32\00:20:58.05 there named Percy Tilson Magan. 00:20:58.06\00:21:00.70 Percy was living in the home of Mr & Mrs James 00:21:00.71\00:21:07.12 and Ellen White. Ed spent many hours in the 00:21:07.13\00:21:10.47 White home studying with Percy the 00:21:10.48\00:21:12.80 Three Angels' messages, 00:21:12.81\00:21:14.54 the investigative judgment, 00:21:14.55\00:21:16.25 the sanctuary and the atonement all in the 00:21:16.26\00:21:18.97 light of the beautiful message of righteousness 00:21:18.98\00:21:21.46 by faith. Together Ted; Ed and Percy fell 00:21:21.47\00:21:26.74 in love with Jesus again and became committed 00:21:26.75\00:21:30.15 to spreading the Three Angels messages far 00:21:30.16\00:21:33.28 and wide. For 26 years these men were never 00:21:33.29\00:21:37.21 long apart. Percy had an immeasurable 00:21:37.22\00:21:40.82 influence on Ed. And for years they labored side 00:21:40.83\00:21:45.67 by side at Madison school as it's co-founders. 00:21:45.68\00:21:49.84 In 1910 they both enrolled in medical 00:21:49.85\00:21:53.80 school realizing that they're fledgling medical 00:21:53.81\00:21:57.35 missionary training program needed 00:21:57.36\00:21:59.35 more physicians. Still living on Madison's 00:21:59.36\00:22:02.64 campus Ed and Percy went to school commuted 00:22:02.65\00:22:07.08 everyday to Nashville on motorcycles. 00:22:07.09\00:22:10.28 In 1911, Church leaders placed an earnest call 00:22:10.29\00:22:15.24 to Madison for Dr. Newton Evans one of Madison's 00:22:15.25\00:22:19.97 two licensed physicians to come to California 00:22:19.98\00:22:23.42 and to be a part of starting a college 00:22:23.43\00:22:25.44 of medical evangelists in Loma Linda California. 00:22:25.45\00:22:28.24 Dr Evans at first refused noting the dyer 00:22:28.25\00:22:32.35 conditions in which Madison will be left 00:22:32.36\00:22:34.45 should he live but when the second more urgent 00:22:34.46\00:22:38.70 request came even Dr. Sutherland agreed 00:22:38.71\00:22:42.38 that Dr. Newton should go or Ed, not the doctor. 00:22:42.39\00:22:46.78 The staff and leadership of Madison shoulder an 00:22:46.79\00:22:50.94 additional burden in his absence for three more 00:22:50.95\00:22:53.33 years until Percy and Ed could graduate from 00:22:53.34\00:22:57.10 medical school. They graduated 00:22:57.11\00:22:59.12 in the spring of 1914, that same fall however 00:22:59.13\00:23:05.33 WC White wrote another letter to Madison. 00:23:05.34\00:23:10.06 This time he was asking to know Dr. Percy 00:23:10.07\00:23:15.04 team again, to join the Loma Linda faculty 00:23:15.05\00:23:18.78 and take leadership of the work in Los Angeles. 00:23:18.79\00:23:22.08 When it was decided that Percy indeed should 00:23:22.09\00:23:25.57 leave Madison, Dr. Sutherland said it is, 00:23:25.58\00:23:29.65 this is like tearing asunder bone and marrow. 00:23:29.66\00:23:34.19 Later the Madison group contributed $50000 00:23:34.20\00:23:40.30 in early 1900s currency, $50000 to help start 00:23:40.31\00:23:46.81 what are now Loma Linda University and 00:23:46.82\00:23:49.22 White Memorial Hospital. My point is this, 00:23:49.23\00:23:52.06 Sutherland knew it wasn't about Madison it was 00:23:52.07\00:23:56.35 about souls. It wasn't about building an empire 00:23:56.36\00:24:01.52 of ministry or it's about schools he controlled, 00:24:01.53\00:24:03.70 it was about finishing the work in the most 00:24:03.71\00:24:05.81 efficient manner. To this end he gave from 00:24:05.82\00:24:09.36 Madison's resources freely, even when he 00:24:09.37\00:24:13.31 knew it wouldn't promote or extend 00:24:13.32\00:24:17.19 the institution of Madison itself. 00:24:17.20\00:24:19.68 Sometimes we forget that we're not called 00:24:19.69\00:24:22.54 to this time of earth's history 00:24:22.55\00:24:23.76 to build institutions. Institutions, my friends 00:24:23.77\00:24:28.56 are only a means to an end and not an end 00:24:28.57\00:24:32.91 to themselves. Enough of this competing 00:24:32.92\00:24:36.19 for credit, enough competing for publicity 00:24:36.20\00:24:39.92 enough thinking that we're competing for funds. 00:24:39.93\00:24:43.46 We need to work together within the church 00:24:43.47\00:24:46.98 and within self-supporting ministries. 00:24:46.99\00:24:49.53 We have been given a gospel commission not 00:24:49.54\00:24:51.90 an institution commission, if God gives you 00:24:51.91\00:24:54.72 resources, use those resources for the purpose 00:24:54.73\00:24:57.93 for which they've been given and God will take 00:24:57.94\00:25:01.03 care that you have more. 00:25:01.04\00:25:03.57 The last thing we need in this desperate hour 00:25:03.58\00:25:06.58 of earth's history is for organizations existing 00:25:06.59\00:25:11.03 for the purpose of sustaining themselves, 00:25:11.04\00:25:14.09 while failing to accomplish the purpose for which 00:25:14.10\00:25:17.12 they were established. Principle number two, 00:25:17.13\00:25:20.46 mission first, institution second. 00:25:20.47\00:25:24.45 Principle number three, faithfulness in the face 00:25:24.46\00:25:29.77 of opposition. Amen. Long before 1904 00:25:29.78\00:25:33.50 and the Morning Star ride up the Cumberland 00:25:33.51\00:25:35.22 river Ed and Percy had become known for 00:25:35.23\00:25:39.38 tackling difficult issues. It's interesting to me 00:25:39.39\00:25:44.53 to know from their biographies that Percy 00:25:44.54\00:25:47.01 was often the one that influenced Ed to apply 00:25:47.02\00:25:51.44 the counsels to his own life and make reforms 00:25:51.45\00:25:53.72 and changes in his practice. But it was Ed 00:25:53.73\00:25:56.64 who took these reforms and brought them 00:25:56.65\00:25:59.87 into the institutional setting. 00:25:59.88\00:26:01.62 I'll give you an example. 00:26:01.63\00:26:03.05 It was Percy's influence over Ed Sutherland 00:26:03.06\00:26:06.05 that led Ed to become a vegetarian. 00:26:06.06\00:26:09.23 But in the late 1890s as Ed Sutherland came back 00:26:09.24\00:26:17.90 to Battle Creek to teach to teach Battle Creek 00:26:17.91\00:26:20.21 college, it wasn't long before this Bible teacher 00:26:20.22\00:26:23.64 had influenced a number of students at Battle 00:26:23.65\00:26:26.24 Creek college to also become vegetarians. 00:26:26.25\00:26:30.03 They began asking for a vegetarian diet to be 00:26:30.04\00:26:33.19 served to them in the cafeteria. 00:26:33.20\00:26:35.37 Now two tables were set aside there in 00:26:35.38\00:26:38.94 Battle Creek College for the vegetarians to be 00:26:38.95\00:26:41.84 able to eat but soon that wasn't enough 00:26:41.85\00:26:43.89 and the president of Battle Creek College 00:26:43.90\00:26:46.06 took Ed Sutherland aside. He said Edward, 00:26:46.07\00:26:50.41 we appreciate your work as a Bible teacher, 00:26:50.42\00:26:53.90 but you must realize that you should avoid 00:26:53.91\00:26:57.11 discussions of matters that may lead to 00:26:57.12\00:26:59.94 controversy and fanaticism. 00:26:59.95\00:27:02.08 Then the matron spoken up, Edward, 00:27:03.04\00:27:05.17 I'm surprised that you would stir up the 00:27:05.70\00:27:07.84 students over so trivial a matter. 00:27:07.85\00:27:10.13 Now according to the book Madison, 00:27:11.65\00:27:13.75 God's beautiful farm, Ed didn't argue but 00:27:13.76\00:27:17.43 neither did he yield and within three years 00:27:17.44\00:27:20.52 President Prescott himself was a vegetarian 00:27:20.89\00:27:23.75 and meat disappeared from the college dining 00:27:24.21\00:27:26.69 room never again to reappeared. 00:27:26.70\00:27:28.75 Later after fall, after founding 00:27:29.58\00:27:31.63 Walla Walla College, Edward called back to 00:27:31.64\00:27:34.28 Battle Creek to be it's president. 00:27:34.29\00:27:35.68 Listen to the counsel of Ellen White concerning 00:27:37.12\00:27:39.34 manual training but could not see how this 00:27:39.35\00:27:41.99 counsel could be applied where they were 00:27:42.00\00:27:44.97 in Battle Creek with only a seven acre campus. 00:27:44.98\00:27:47.30 Finally in desperation, he did something sure 00:27:48.13\00:27:51.29 to ruffle many feathers. He and Percy plowed up 00:27:51.30\00:27:55.04 the baseball diamond and tennis courts 00:27:55.05\00:27:57.32 and planted vegetable gardens. 00:27:57.33\00:27:58.95 It was Sutherland and McGann that led to 00:28:00.92\00:28:03.06 the radical move from Battle Creek to 00:28:03.07\00:28:06.76 Berrien Springs, at every step of the way 00:28:06.77\00:28:10.04 they had to meet with false accusations 00:28:10.05\00:28:12.21 and rumors and opposition from those 00:28:12.22\00:28:14.40 who did not want to go along with their changes. 00:28:14.41\00:28:17.44 The criticisms flowed freely even from the 00:28:19.52\00:28:22.11 newly moved church headquarters 00:28:22.12\00:28:23.85 in Washington, D.C. The constant pressure 00:28:23.86\00:28:26.88 had broken the health of Ida McGann, 00:28:26.89\00:28:28.64 Percy's wife by early 1904 Ed and Percy agreed 00:28:28.65\00:28:32.22 that should the opposition continue, 00:28:32.68\00:28:35.00 that in the May 1904 General conference session 00:28:35.01\00:28:38.16 they would have to resign their positions 00:28:38.53\00:28:40.53 at Emmanuel Missionary College. 00:28:41.07\00:28:43.00 The year before a particularly vicious rumor 00:28:43.96\00:28:47.03 had circulated. It was reported that Ellen White 00:28:47.04\00:28:51.03 herself had said to the management 00:28:51.04\00:28:53.93 of the school at Berrien Springs was crooked 00:28:53.94\00:28:56.93 and wrong, that there was a one man power 00:28:56.94\00:29:00.43 that would crush everyone who did not conform. 00:29:00.89\00:29:03.96 Now this was not true and Ellen White herself 00:29:05.95\00:29:08.65 vigorously denied having said something like 00:29:09.01\00:29:12.30 this but in spite of her denials this statement 00:29:12.31\00:29:15.95 attributed to her was sent to the staff 00:29:16.58\00:29:18.83 and students in Berrien Springs. 00:29:18.84\00:29:21.59 Ellen White says that under the pressure 00:29:23.91\00:29:26.15 of these rumors Mrs. McGann's health 00:29:26.16\00:29:29.15 was broken. In the General Conference session 00:29:29.49\00:29:32.59 of 1904 while they were meeting 00:29:32.60\00:29:34.31 Mrs. McGann passed her rest. 00:29:34.71\00:29:36.69 Now this is what Ellen White had to say 00:29:36.70\00:29:39.00 Sister McGann with her husband, struggling 00:29:39.49\00:29:42.42 with him and praying that he might be sustained 00:29:42.43\00:29:44.45 she did not think of herself but of him 00:29:44.46\00:29:46.60 and God did sustained them as they walked 00:29:47.07\00:29:49.52 in the light. But it seemed to her as 00:29:49.53\00:29:51.66 if some of our brethren had not a heart of flesh, 00:29:51.67\00:29:53.92 his poor wife was informed that Sister White 00:29:55.83\00:29:57.75 had taken a stand against her brethren, 00:29:57.76\00:29:59.49 oh why did anyone ever say such a thing. 00:29:59.50\00:30:02.30 Sister White never turned against Brother 00:30:02.82\00:30:04.80 McGann or Brother Sutherland but Sister 00:30:04.81\00:30:06.88 McGann was so waited down with sorrow 00:30:06.89\00:30:09.02 that she lost her reason, now the poor woman 00:30:09.03\00:30:11.86 has gone leaving two motherless children, 00:30:12.31\00:30:14.57 all this because of the work done by 00:30:14.98\00:30:18.27 unsanctified tongues. Now soon after she made 00:30:18.28\00:30:23.07 this statement, the unsanctified tongues 00:30:23.08\00:30:25.02 went back to work. Now they made the ridiculous 00:30:25.39\00:30:28.93 rumor circulate that Ellen White had accused 00:30:29.25\00:30:32.08 the church leaders of murder, 00:30:32.09\00:30:33.36 in the middle of all of this controversy 00:30:34.95\00:30:36.98 Ed and Sutherland resigned their positions 00:30:37.58\00:30:40.31 at Emmanuel Missionary College. 00:30:40.82\00:30:42.33 Now I want to tell you there are some modern 00:30:42.34\00:30:43.52 historians that say at their time there was 00:30:43.53\00:30:45.56 fraught with foibles and they reformed 00:30:45.57\00:30:47.34 from mistakes. But listen to what the prophet 00:30:47.35\00:30:50.16 of God said, she told the assembled delegates 00:30:50.17\00:30:53.13 there at the conference that Percy and Ed were 00:30:53.80\00:30:58.02 not leaving as failures but I quote they had 00:30:58.03\00:31:00.61 acted in harmony with the light God gave. 00:31:00.62\00:31:03.40 They have worked hard under great difficulties 00:31:04.24\00:31:07.39 God has been with them and approved 00:31:07.80\00:31:10.19 of their efforts. But my friends the principle 00:31:10.20\00:31:13.96 number three that we find from the founders 00:31:13.97\00:31:15.86 of Madison was that we must be faithful even 00:31:15.87\00:31:19.51 if we meet opposition. My Bible tells me that 00:31:19.52\00:31:23.69 we should expect trials and troubles to come. 00:31:23.70\00:31:25.45 2nd Timothy chapter 3 and verse 12 00:31:27.43\00:31:29.47 Yea, and all that will live godly shall suffer 00:31:29.48\00:31:31.29 persecution. Friend, today I want to remind 00:31:31.30\00:31:33.50 you that we are living in a great controversy. 00:31:33.51\00:31:39.40 But I hasten to remind you that this controversy 00:31:41.36\00:31:44.24 is not, has never been and never will be a 00:31:44.25\00:31:47.88 controversy between self-supporting ministries 00:31:47.89\00:31:50.40 in the church. Between so called liberals 00:31:50.41\00:31:53.05 and conservatives, between individuals, 00:31:53.06\00:31:55.53 it is the great controversy between 00:31:55.54\00:31:57.19 Christ and Satan. Between truth and error, 00:31:57.20\00:31:59.92 between right and wrong between the power 00:31:59.93\00:32:02.37 of the word of God and the fatal sophistries 00:32:02.38\00:32:04.30 of the enemy. And if you and I are going to play 00:32:04.31\00:32:06.99 a part in this great controversy 00:32:07.00\00:32:09.03 we must not always run from conflicts. 00:32:09.47\00:32:13.47 We must learn to do what is right because 00:32:14.07\00:32:16.74 it is right and leave the consequences with God. 00:32:16.75\00:32:19.56 If we will stand for the truth we must expect 00:32:20.14\00:32:23.21 that it will bring opposition. 00:32:23.22\00:32:24.46 Ellen White said it this way, if the Church 00:32:24.91\00:32:26.96 will put on the robe of Christ righteousness, 00:32:26.97\00:32:29.44 that's what we heard about Wednesday night 00:32:30.17\00:32:31.72 wasn't it? The mission within our priority, 00:32:31.73\00:32:34.06 if the church will put on the robe of 00:32:34.07\00:32:36.30 Christ righteousness, withdrawing from all 00:32:36.31\00:32:38.76 allegiance with the world, there is before 00:32:38.77\00:32:42.41 her the dawn of a bride and glorious day. 00:32:42.51\00:32:44.72 Truth passing by those who despise and reject 00:32:45.13\00:32:48.63 it will triumph, amen, amen. Though times 00:32:48.64\00:32:52.83 apparently retarded its progress has never 00:32:52.84\00:32:55.08 been checked. When the message of God meets 00:32:55.09\00:32:58.16 opposition, he gives it additional force that 00:32:58.17\00:33:02.64 it may exert greater influence, in doubt with 00:33:02.65\00:33:06.35 divine energy it will cut it's way through 00:33:06.36\00:33:08.51 the strongest barriers and triumph over 00:33:08.52\00:33:11.69 every obstacle. The founders of Madison asked 00:33:11.70\00:33:16.01 one simple question, not what is popular, 00:33:16.02\00:33:18.10 what is the easy thing to do, what is truth, 00:33:18.11\00:33:23.34 what does the council say? I don't know about you, 00:33:23.90\00:33:27.52 but I want to be on the side of truth don't you? 00:33:27.53\00:33:29.67 Amen. Principle number four, believe his prophets. 00:33:29.68\00:33:34.31 It does me sick, it does me up and makes me sick 00:33:35.29\00:33:38.71 the whole thought of it though, the only reason 00:33:38.72\00:33:41.18 Sutherland and McGann bought the Nelson place 00:33:41.19\00:33:43.82 was because they believe in the spirit of prophecy. 00:33:43.83\00:33:46.11 Madison was built on an implicit faith 00:33:46.81\00:33:49.18 and the relevance of the Bible and the 00:33:49.19\00:33:51.22 Biblical prophetic message of Adventism. 00:33:51.23\00:33:53.59 Sutherland and McGann spent their lives teaching 00:33:54.31\00:33:56.74 the principles of scriptures and when it 00:33:56.75\00:33:58.90 came to the spirit of prophecy they gave more 00:33:58.91\00:34:01.27 than lip service. They followed its guidance 00:34:01.28\00:34:03.98 even when it went against their own inclinations 00:34:03.99\00:34:06.86 and opinions. In Second Chronicles 00:34:07.41\00:34:09.98 chapter 20 and verse 20 Jehoshaphat said 00:34:09.99\00:34:12.32 to the people Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants 00:34:12.33\00:34:16.13 of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, 00:34:16.14\00:34:19.06 and so shall ye be established; 00:34:19.07\00:34:20.97 believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. 00:34:21.36\00:34:24.48 I maybe old fashioned my friends but I still 00:34:24.49\00:34:27.40 believe the Bible is the best guide for both 00:34:27.41\00:34:31.47 individuals and organizations living 00:34:31.48\00:34:33.98 today in 2007. I find it troubling when I feel 00:34:34.31\00:34:38.12 the people are saying that the council is no 00:34:38.13\00:34:41.11 longer relevant. I find it troubling when on our 00:34:41.12\00:34:44.60 educational efforts, we are more interested 00:34:44.61\00:34:46.38 and ideas that the world has subscribed 00:34:46.39\00:34:48.28 to than the ideas that God has prescribed for us. 00:34:48.29\00:34:51.24 I would remind you that in 1904, it wasn't easy 00:34:52.53\00:34:56.90 to follow the counsel either. If you think that 00:34:56.91\00:35:00.39 manual training was popular in academic 00:35:00.40\00:35:02.76 circles in 1904 you're mistaken about history. 00:35:02.77\00:35:06.26 It wasn't the popular thing to do. 00:35:06.90\00:35:08.70 If you think that, if you think that in the 00:35:09.11\00:35:11.18 early 1900s disposing of sports for manual 00:35:11.19\00:35:14.35 training or for going the teaching of popular 00:35:14.36\00:35:16.48 but demoralizing literature for Bible 00:35:16.49\00:35:18.62 teaching was well regarded in educational circles, 00:35:18.63\00:35:22.24 your mistaken. But Madison listened to the counsels 00:35:22.25\00:35:26.95 of inspiration. And God blessed them. 00:35:26.96\00:35:30.24 I used an example of education this morning 00:35:31.05\00:35:33.29 because I'm a teacher and many of us here 00:35:33.30\00:35:35.70 at ASI are involved in education and training 00:35:35.71\00:35:39.13 of young people. But whatever your profession 00:35:39.14\00:35:41.87 or calling or vacation maybe, 00:35:41.88\00:35:43.50 I ask you this question this morning, 00:35:44.22\00:35:46.48 are you believing his prophets. Amen. 00:35:46.91\00:35:49.89 If you're not reading, by default you're not 00:35:49.90\00:35:52.17 believing, God is today calling us to greater 00:35:52.18\00:35:55.95 fidelity to his word. I wanna turn again 00:35:55.96\00:35:59.39 to the example of Madison they're often 00:35:59.40\00:36:01.22 discouraging times, they're often misunderstood. 00:36:01.23\00:36:04.57 But God through his messenger told them that 00:36:04.58\00:36:06.71 as long as they will be faithful to his word 00:36:06.72\00:36:08.93 they would be blessed I quote, 00:36:08.94\00:36:10.61 the Lord does not set limits about his workers 00:36:10.62\00:36:13.24 in some lines as men are likely to set. 00:36:13.25\00:36:17.45 In their work, brethren McGann and Sutherland 00:36:17.84\00:36:20.17 have been hindered unnecessarily, 00:36:20.18\00:36:21.82 means have been withheld from them, 00:36:22.27\00:36:23.74 because in the organization management 00:36:24.24\00:36:26.87 of the Madison school it was not placed into the 00:36:26.88\00:36:29.05 control of the conference. But the reasons why 00:36:29.06\00:36:32.06 this school was not owned in control by the 00:36:32.07\00:36:33.88 conference have not been duly considered. 00:36:33.89\00:36:35.61 Now notice what she says, the Lord does not 00:36:36.07\00:36:38.27 require that the educational work 00:36:38.28\00:36:39.92 at Madison shall be changed all about before 00:36:39.93\00:36:43.04 you can receive the highly support of our people. 00:36:43.05\00:36:44.87 The work that has been done there is approved 00:36:45.57\00:36:47.75 of God and He forbids that this line of work 00:36:47.76\00:36:51.06 shall be broken up. The Lord will continue 00:36:51.07\00:36:54.35 to bless and sustain the workers, 00:36:54.36\00:36:56.70 so long as they fallow his counsel. 00:36:56.71\00:37:00.11 So long as they do what, follow his counsel. 00:37:00.12\00:37:02.95 The Lord will continue to sustain and bless 00:37:02.96\00:37:06.12 our work as long as we follow his counsel, 00:37:06.13\00:37:09.62 the issue my friends is faithfulness to the 00:37:09.63\00:37:13.29 word of God. Believe his prophets so shall 00:37:13.30\00:37:16.88 you prosper. The fifth and last principle that 00:37:16.89\00:37:20.50 I'm gonna share with you this morning 00:37:20.51\00:37:21.63 from the founders of Madison, 00:37:21.64\00:37:22.84 it's found in 2nd Corinthians 00:37:23.69\00:37:25.10 chapter 12 and verse 15, it's a story of the 00:37:25.11\00:37:29.26 Apostle Paul's life summarized in one 00:37:29.27\00:37:32.47 sentence you might say. The Apostle Paul 00:37:32.48\00:37:34.83 might be considered the earliest of the 00:37:34.84\00:37:37.12 ASI members he was a tent maker, a self supporting 00:37:37.13\00:37:39.94 worker at many times supporting himself 00:37:39.95\00:37:43.07 by the work of his own hands. 00:37:43.08\00:37:44.90 Many times including while he was in Corinth, 00:37:44.91\00:37:48.36 this was not appreciated. Many times they didn't 00:37:48.92\00:37:52.78 respect him because he was not considered 00:37:52.79\00:37:54.82 one of the official workers but it says here 00:37:54.83\00:37:57.78 in 2nd Corinthians chapter 12 and verse 15, 00:37:57.79\00:38:00.88 And I will very gladly do what, spend and 00:38:01.28\00:38:05.74 be spent for you; though the more abundantly 00:38:05.75\00:38:09.43 I love you, the less I be loved. 00:38:09.44\00:38:12.12 The fifth and last principle we'll consider 00:38:12.13\00:38:14.57 this morning is the principle 00:38:14.58\00:38:16.29 of self-sacrifice. The Apostle Paul didn't 00:38:16.30\00:38:22.38 get much reward on this earth for his labors. 00:38:22.39\00:38:26.53 McGann and Sutherland didn't either. 00:38:28.91\00:38:31.46 In fact the work at Madison was established 00:38:31.47\00:38:35.63 on sacrifice. Life at Madison was very simple 00:38:36.02\00:38:39.28 especially in the early years the old log 00:38:39.29\00:38:41.61 plantation on the Nelson place at first was 00:38:41.62\00:38:44.78 both living quarters for the faculty 00:38:44.79\00:38:47.11 and classrooms for the students. 00:38:47.12\00:38:48.89 Teachers worked side by side with the students, 00:38:48.90\00:38:51.64 Professor McGann was the farm manager. 00:38:51.65\00:38:55.20 And Professor Sutherland was the 00:38:55.66\00:38:57.61 president and general manager of the school. 00:38:57.62\00:38:59.87 I found it very interesting though when I learned 00:38:59.88\00:39:02.36 that one of President Sutherland's official 00:39:02.37\00:39:05.02 responsibilities was to churn the cream 00:39:05.03\00:39:09.25 and prepare the butter for sale. 00:39:09.26\00:39:11.05 Miss Degraw would dawn her white gloves 00:39:13.76\00:39:16.54 and drive the old mule to town, 00:39:17.34\00:39:19.67 carrying the eggs and butter to market. 00:39:20.31\00:39:22.82 On one occasion some mischievous college 00:39:23.52\00:39:26.74 boys not only greased the buggy, 00:39:26.75\00:39:30.59 but they greased the leather harness 00:39:31.36\00:39:33.46 and reins as well and of course Miss Degraw's 00:39:33.47\00:39:38.12 white gloves in the process. 00:39:38.13\00:39:40.47 They used plaques for tables and dry goods 00:39:41.43\00:39:44.34 boxes for chairs, there was no electricity, 00:39:44.35\00:39:47.28 no air-conditioning not even steam-heat. 00:39:47.29\00:39:49.70 For all this hard work they earned just 00:39:51.15\00:39:53.11 a few meager dollars a month. 00:39:53.12\00:39:54.78 Life was simple at Madison, 00:39:55.19\00:39:56.92 why did they do it? Because they believed 00:39:56.93\00:39:59.62 in the mission, they believed in the message, 00:39:59.63\00:40:02.58 they believed in the cause, and I today in 2007 00:40:02.59\00:40:07.17 when I read these stories of the pioneers 00:40:07.18\00:40:09.26 of our church at Madison. 00:40:09.27\00:40:10.41 I remember again that in 2007 I really don't 00:40:10.42\00:40:14.02 understand the meaning of the word sacrifice. 00:40:14.03\00:40:16.60 Do you? Some times I think it's easier for us 00:40:17.78\00:40:23.10 to go on a mission trip to India. 00:40:23.11\00:40:24.49 It's easier to find people to move to, 00:40:24.50\00:40:26.53 to go to India than to move to a small town 00:40:27.95\00:40:30.78 in south to start a church. 00:40:30.79\00:40:32.10 But the works can be finished my friends 00:40:32.82\00:40:35.02 with greater sacrifice than it was began. 00:40:35.91\00:40:39.64 Five principles, self-supporting 00:40:41.00\00:40:43.30 ministers mission first, institution second, 00:40:43.31\00:40:47.67 faithfulness in the face of opposition, 00:40:48.14\00:40:50.19 believe his prophets and self-sacrifice. 00:40:50.63\00:40:53.96 On Madison's 30th anniversary, 00:40:54.39\00:40:56.23 Professor Arthur W Spalding recited the 00:40:56.69\00:40:59.80 following poem that aptly describes the spirit 00:40:59.81\00:41:03.20 and experiences of the founders of Madison. 00:41:03.21\00:41:05.06 I've adapted them slightly for our 60th anniversary. 00:41:05.44\00:41:08.47 Why came they here this little band, 00:41:08.92\00:41:10.98 what sought they in this climb, 00:41:11.43\00:41:13.09 were they so greedy of the land or hope 00:41:13.67\00:41:16.82 they jewels to mind. No they with faith 00:41:16.83\00:41:20.09 and hope were filled, they saw a kingdom 00:41:20.10\00:41:22.50 great of minds and souls that should be built upon 00:41:22.51\00:41:26.66 their low estate.
