Well, of course, my father 00:02:43.98\00:02:48.51 and I want to say how blessed someone 00:02:48.52\00:02:52.70 can be to be born to parents that love ASI 00:02:52.71\00:02:56.61 and came to ASI. 00:02:56.62\00:02:57.93 My father was very active in ASI 00:02:57.94\00:03:00.91 and also became the ASI president 00:03:00.92\00:03:03.09 and I think it was 73, 72-73 00:03:03.10\00:03:06.53 and he was president for 6 years 00:03:06.54\00:03:08.60 and all the time I've been able to attend many, 00:03:08.61\00:03:12.86 many ASI meetings and I love it 00:03:12.87\00:03:15.26 more today then I did. 00:03:15.27\00:03:16.90 I guess that, that's something 00:03:16.91\00:03:19.57 that happens with ASI people. 00:03:19.58\00:03:21.02 The more you come, the more you come, 00:03:21.03\00:03:22.44 the more you come, because he just love it. 00:03:22.45\00:03:24.17 Now tell me a little bit about I recall you 00:03:24.18\00:03:27.10 telling me that your father 00:03:27.11\00:03:28.82 used to talk about ASI in some very 00:03:28.83\00:03:31.57 endearing ways, I'm talking about 00:03:31.58\00:03:33.20 the kind of people that were here? 00:03:33.21\00:03:34.57 Well, my father said there were no better friends 00:03:34.58\00:03:38.70 in the world than ASI friends. 00:03:38.71\00:03:40.76 And he spoke of many of them 00:03:40.77\00:03:43.49 that he met and learned as the salt of the earth 00:03:43.50\00:03:46.23 and even when I didn't go to ASI 00:03:46.24\00:03:50.11 then my parents would come home, 00:03:50.12\00:03:52.51 they would tell all the new people who had 00:03:52.52\00:03:55.16 joined ASI and what wonderful people they were, 00:03:55.17\00:03:57.94 so whether I went or not I thought I've been there. 00:03:57.95\00:04:00.59 Now, I know that there are somethings 00:04:00.60\00:04:03.83 that happened now that maybe didn't happen 00:04:03.84\00:04:06.63 when ASI first started. 00:04:06.64\00:04:08.47 Let's talk about something that very near 00:04:08.48\00:04:10.76 and dear and close to our hearts. 00:04:10.77\00:04:12.08 Or should I say maybe our stomachs. 00:04:12.09\00:04:14.59 Tell us about what happened 00:04:14.60\00:04:16.46 with the fellowship meals back then? 00:04:16.47\00:04:18.56 Well, my early remembrances of ASI 00:04:18.57\00:04:22.52 was taking food from home and my mother 00:04:22.53\00:04:26.86 would prepare meals in our room 00:04:26.87\00:04:29.43 at the hotel and invite friends and family 00:04:29.44\00:04:33.56 and so forth into eat with us 00:04:33.57\00:04:35.14 and there just wasn't money to go 00:04:35.15\00:04:38.34 to a restaurant and eat, 00:04:38.35\00:04:39.68 so we had many fellowship meals in our room. 00:04:39.69\00:04:43.59 Now was the meeting, 00:04:43.60\00:04:45.57 were the meetings still like Wednesday evening 00:04:45.58\00:04:48.12 through the weekend, 00:04:48.13\00:04:49.10 were they that long, do you know? 00:04:49.11\00:04:50.54 I don't believe they were, 00:04:50.55\00:04:52.87 I think they were more Friday 00:04:52.88\00:04:57.13 and Saturday Sabbath. 00:04:57.14\00:04:59.95 So it's kind of a weekend experience. 00:04:59.96\00:05:01.85 Yes. Now we just jump back to the food. 00:05:01.86\00:05:04.98 So everyone kind of fellowship in small groups, 00:05:04.99\00:05:08.59 how many people would come to ASI? 00:05:08.60\00:05:11.24 Were these many, many, many, 00:05:11.25\00:05:12.42 many rooms that people would cluster together 00:05:12.43\00:05:15.09 and have meals? No, no, I would say 00:05:15.10\00:05:19.91 many of the ASI meetings early on I attended, 00:05:19.92\00:05:23.16 I am a bit surprised if there were a hundred people 00:05:23.17\00:05:25.87 all together there, small groups. 00:05:25.88\00:05:28.67 When, at what point did the shift happen 00:05:28.68\00:05:32.26 when there were fellowship meals 00:05:32.27\00:05:34.06 of all the members together? 00:05:34.07\00:05:35.35 Did that happen during your time? 00:05:35.36\00:05:36.71 Well, it did. 00:05:36.72\00:05:39.02 I remember I did not go to the meeting, 00:05:39.03\00:05:42.29 but I remember my parents coming and talking about 00:05:42.30\00:05:45.18 the wonderful meals that Paul DiMaggio 00:05:45.19\00:05:48.47 had prepared for them and so forth, 00:05:48.48\00:05:51.47 and that was quite exciting 00:05:51.48\00:05:53.19 and now we have Sharon Robertson doing that 00:05:53.20\00:05:57.10 and I just want to say that I think the meals 00:05:57.11\00:06:01.59 are one of the most wonderful things 00:06:01.60\00:06:03.86 that happened because of all of the fellowship 00:06:03.87\00:06:06.26 that you have sitting at the table with different 00:06:06.27\00:06:10.66 people every meal and it's just a wonderful 00:06:10.67\00:06:13.78 time and I certainly want to give them a wonderful 00:06:13.79\00:06:18.35 thanks for all they do in that respect, 00:06:18.36\00:06:22.55 and those of you that don't remember the days 00:06:22.56\00:06:24.88 when we didn't have meals you would understand 00:06:24.89\00:06:27.79 my feeling. Now I remember 00:06:27.80\00:06:30.02 you told me about an experience, 00:06:30.03\00:06:31.60 just emphasize this point that a particular person 00:06:31.61\00:06:35.39 that you always wanted to meet and you were able 00:06:35.40\00:06:38.26 to actually have a meal with them 00:06:38.27\00:06:39.88 when you were here at ASI. 00:06:39.89\00:06:41.27 Well, yes I remember a few years ago when 00:06:41.28\00:06:45.93 Don Snyder was elected the North American Division. 00:06:45.94\00:06:51.56 And I thought well I would like to talk to him 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.90 and I thought there is no way I will. 00:06:54.91\00:06:57.65 And while I was at ASI I think, 00:06:57.66\00:07:00.22 he and his wife sat at my table a couple of 00:07:00.23\00:07:02.63 different times. So I enjoyed that 00:07:02.64\00:07:05.58 and finding out that his wife grew up 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.63 where my mother did and it was very interesting. 00:07:07.64\00:07:10.13 So you were so much more brothers and sisters 00:07:10.14\00:07:13.28 and alike then we are really apart 00:07:13.29\00:07:15.01 and it's a wonderful thing that ASI 00:07:15.02\00:07:16.89 brings us together. Yes. 00:07:16.90\00:07:18.72 Tell us did we have members in action 00:07:18.73\00:07:20.83 in the same way that we do now? 00:07:20.84\00:07:23.35 Oh, yes, we did, that is one trademark of ASI 00:07:23.36\00:07:28.13 that has not faded away. 00:07:28.14\00:07:30.32 That's always been the thing where the members 00:07:30.33\00:07:34.26 told of so many wonderful experiences 00:07:34.27\00:07:36.89 and so forth and I remember that 00:07:36.90\00:07:39.09 from early on. Do you have a 00:07:39.10\00:07:40.97 favorite memory of members in action 00:07:40.98\00:07:43.50 that you recall? 00:07:43.51\00:07:44.48 Well, there is a lot of people I could mention 00:07:44.49\00:07:49.05 but one that stands in my mind 00:07:49.06\00:07:51.06 is Jesse Harris and her home, 00:07:51.07\00:07:53.72 the children and even as a young person 00:07:53.73\00:07:57.18 I loved to hear her get up and tell the stories 00:07:57.19\00:08:00.95 and all of the needs of the children 00:08:00.96\00:08:03.02 and somehow she had room for all of them. 00:08:03.03\00:08:05.77 And those of you that don't remember her 00:08:05.78\00:08:09.71 or weren't members, try reading the book, 00:08:09.72\00:08:12.66 "A Promise in the Cornfield" 00:08:12.67\00:08:15.48 that was written by Madlyn Hamblin 00:08:15.49\00:08:17.86 and it's a wonderful to read. 00:08:17.87\00:08:20.39 So just tell me Ann, 00:08:20.40\00:08:22.25 as long as we are here on this earth, 00:08:22.26\00:08:24.64 if we keep having ASI Conventions, 00:08:24.65\00:08:26.72 do you think you will be here? 00:08:26.73\00:08:27.93 Something big will have to keep me away. 00:08:27.94\00:08:33.24 I love coming. Thank you very much 00:08:33.25\00:08:36.26 for sharing of the humble beginnings of ASI. 00:08:36.27\00:08:38.71 Thank you. 00:08:38.72\00:08:39.95 I love ASI and one of the best things about it 00:08:49.86\00:08:52.80 is the projects that we've done in the past. 00:08:52.81\00:08:55.95 Who do I have with me tonight? 00:08:55.96\00:08:58.23 Musa Mitakro. Musa Mitakaro. Yes. 00:08:58.24\00:09:03.87 So are you like from Kentucky. 00:09:03.88\00:09:05.65 No, I am from Tanzania in Africa. 00:09:08.09\00:09:11.01 Tanzania in East in Africa. Yes. 00:09:11.02\00:09:13.59 Now you have a ministry over there, 00:09:13.60\00:09:16.86 is that right? Yes. 00:09:16.87\00:09:17.97 Tell us about what kind of ministry you have? 00:09:17.98\00:09:20.78 The ministry's name is Twing Association 00:09:20.79\00:09:25.54 for Health Evangelism and Education Development. 00:09:25.55\00:09:30.30 So you have and how long is this, 00:09:30.31\00:09:33.18 have you had this ministry in Tanzania? 00:09:33.19\00:09:35.50 We started in 2000. Two thousand. Yes. 00:09:35.51\00:09:39.92 So now, ASI last year give you some money 00:09:39.93\00:09:43.47 to your ministry. Yes. 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.24 And what did you do with those moneys? 00:09:45.25\00:09:49.10 We conducted thirteen [foreign] site evangelism. 00:09:49.11\00:09:56.64 Thirteen different sites. Yes, 00:09:56.65\00:09:59.04 in unentered villages. 00:09:59.05\00:10:01.45 So in Tanzania, 00:10:01.46\00:10:03.53 now we hear lots about Africa 00:10:03.54\00:10:05.31 but you had unentered areas in Tanzania. 00:10:05.32\00:10:08.36 Yes, not only in Tanzania, 00:10:08.37\00:10:10.91 in whole Africa we have some parts where 00:10:10.92\00:10:15.82 the three angels message hasn't reached. 00:10:15.83\00:10:20.66 You have, the people haven't been reached, 00:10:20.67\00:10:23.40 and so now, how did you originally 00:10:23.41\00:10:26.21 become associated with this ministry? 00:10:26.22\00:10:28.54 A missionary family from USA 00:10:31.51\00:10:33.58 came to Africa in 1970. 00:10:33.59\00:10:40.17 When I was 14 years old I was taken in that family. 00:10:40.18\00:10:44.70 So they taught me from that age, 00:10:44.71\00:10:48.46 they taught me how to preach, 00:10:48.47\00:10:50.89 they taught me English and from that time 00:10:50.90\00:10:55.39 I started preaching. 00:10:55.40\00:10:56.74 You started preaching at age 14. 00:10:56.75\00:11:00.21 Now my understanding is your father, 00:11:00.22\00:11:04.15 not your Father in Heaven 00:11:04.16\00:11:05.89 but your father on this earth was a King, 00:11:05.90\00:11:08.15 right, of the area. You're a tribal. 00:11:08.16\00:11:11.20 Yes, He was a King of Haya tribe in Tanzania. 00:11:12.30\00:11:16.90 And from there from being the son of a tribal King 00:11:18.23\00:11:22.64 you became one who works for the Lord at age 14. 00:11:22.65\00:11:27.44 Yes, the missionary when they came, 00:11:28.05\00:11:31.74 the first thing they did 00:11:31.75\00:11:33.78 they approached to my father. 00:11:33.79\00:11:35.36 He became an Adventist 00:11:35.37\00:11:37.41 and then we were taught also 00:11:37.42\00:11:41.41 and we became Adventist. 00:11:41.42\00:11:43.15 And you became an Adventist. 00:11:43.16\00:11:44.51 Now, this project you did, 00:11:44.52\00:11:47.28 you went and you went out to the villages, 00:11:47.29\00:11:51.26 thirteen villages, right. Right. 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.23 Now out of those thirteen villages 00:11:53.24\00:11:56.41 that you did your meetings 00:11:56.42\00:11:58.62 how many baptisms did you have? 00:11:58.63\00:12:01.19 We baptized 4000 souls 00:12:03.83\00:12:08.04 and not only 4000, 00:12:08.05\00:12:11.78 currently the membership were doubled 00:12:11.79\00:12:15.61 from those villages. So you've doubled it. 00:12:15.62\00:12:20.91 Now for those of you who like to get 00:12:26.96\00:12:29.08 value for your dollar that works out for about 00:12:29.09\00:12:32.01 $6 and 25 cents of baptism. 00:12:32.02\00:12:34.32 So you baptized, so you baptized the 4000 people, 00:12:34.33\00:12:39.89 now tell us there was some people 00:12:39.90\00:12:42.19 that were baptized, 00:12:42.20\00:12:43.23 Alisha or tell us about some of the stories 00:12:43.24\00:12:47.53 of people that you baptized there? 00:12:47.54\00:12:49.33 Well, in our meeting, 00:12:49.34\00:12:52.82 in one of those thirteen meetings 00:12:52.83\00:12:55.61 we experienced the outpouring 00:12:55.62\00:12:59.58 of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:59.59\00:13:00.56 It was a dry season and therefore, 00:13:00.57\00:13:06.81 we were excited to do the crusades 00:13:06.82\00:13:09.36 in the dry season, but though we are 00:13:09.37\00:13:14.42 excited then there was one problem, 00:13:14.43\00:13:17.41 there was no water for baptism. 00:13:17.42\00:13:21.19 So we had to walk five miles to find the water 00:13:21.20\00:13:27.03 in the jungles and then we received the message 00:13:27.04\00:13:33.01 that we have to go for baptism in three villages 00:13:33.02\00:13:38.28 in one day and here there was no water. 00:13:38.29\00:13:41.31 So what should we do? 00:13:41.32\00:13:43.06 I asked the church members to pray 00:13:43.07\00:13:46.43 and after the prayer, within 2-3 days there 00:13:46.44\00:13:52.26 was much rain and so that we had plenty of water. 00:13:52.27\00:13:55.90 We thank God that God answered our prayer. 00:13:55.91\00:13:59.80 So you prayed for rain to have your baptisms. 00:13:59.81\00:14:07.16 Yeah. Praise God. Tell me, in shortly, 00:14:07.17\00:14:12.65 in our time, tell us about Aisha? 00:14:12.66\00:14:14.82 She was a woman who came to your meetings 00:14:14.83\00:14:17.35 and you baptized her, talk about her? 00:14:17.36\00:14:19.79 Aisha was from the Muslim believers 00:14:21.15\00:14:26.31 and therefore she decided with her daughters, 00:14:26.32\00:14:30.31 three of them, to attend the meeting. 00:14:30.32\00:14:32.68 But first I made the call and Aisha couldn't stand 00:14:32.69\00:14:39.05 because she was afraid of the people 00:14:39.06\00:14:43.32 and even the husband, 00:14:43.33\00:14:44.93 because she didn't say anything to the husband 00:14:44.94\00:14:48.69 that she is attending the meeting and therefore, 00:14:48.70\00:14:52.33 Aisha decided to go back and talk with her husband. 00:14:52.34\00:14:57.20 The husband refused. He said, 00:14:57.21\00:15:01.74 you can't join the church that eats pig meats. 00:15:01.75\00:15:10.64 And therefore, Aisha thought about it. 00:15:10.65\00:15:16.30 The following day she came back to the lay person 00:15:16.31\00:15:21.00 to ask him about pig meat eating 00:15:21.01\00:15:27.93 and the lay person told him, 00:15:27.94\00:15:31.78 told her that we Adventists we don't eat pig meat 00:15:31.79\00:15:37.12 and therefore, Aisha was so happy, 00:15:37.13\00:15:40.67 she said, now come that you may teach my husband 00:15:40.68\00:15:45.20 about the food. The lay person 00:15:45.21\00:15:50.93 went to that family, he was invited well. 00:15:50.94\00:15:56.15 He started teaching from Leviticus chapter 11 00:15:56.16\00:15:59.68 about the meat and the man, 00:15:59.69\00:16:04.05 Ibrahim the husband of Aisha 00:16:04.06\00:16:07.06 understood that we Adventists doesn't eat 00:16:07.07\00:16:11.20 unclean foods and one of it is pig meat. 00:16:11.21\00:16:17.86 So Ibrahim allowed the wife to be baptized 00:16:17.87\00:16:26.32 and to join the church. Can we say amen? 00:16:26.33\00:16:28.97 Musa, Thank you so much for your ministry 00:16:28.98\00:16:31.58 and what you do. And one father picked up 00:20:46.40\00:20:49.47 a microphone and he said, 00:20:49.48\00:20:50.60 a year and half ago I was in a life 00:20:50.61\00:20:52.76 threatening accident. 00:20:52.77\00:20:53.95 He messed up his back, 00:20:53.96\00:20:55.76 he shattered a leg and over time 00:20:55.77\00:20:58.39 as this didn't heal, didn't heal, 00:20:58.40\00:20:59.94 he began to get depressed 00:20:59.95\00:21:01.67 and that depression turned 00:21:01.68\00:21:02.77 to suicidal thoughts and he said, 00:21:02.78\00:21:04.88 I was just a mess, 00:21:04.89\00:21:05.89 I separated myself from my family, 00:21:05.90\00:21:07.93 from my wife, from my church and from God, 00:21:07.94\00:21:10.59 and he said about that time kids in discipleship 00:21:10.60\00:21:13.55 started at our church and this family 00:21:13.56\00:21:16.46 was invited to participate and he said 00:21:16.47\00:21:18.84 its changed my life. He gave his wife a hug, 00:21:18.85\00:21:21.62 he said, now we are closer together 00:21:21.63\00:21:24.26 and the family is close to God again 00:21:24.27\00:21:26.49 and just he said, Kids in Discipleship 00:21:26.50\00:21:29.14 has made that difference 00:21:29.15\00:21:30.12 and now he has a ministry for children 00:21:30.13\00:21:32.84 in the community, Children's Church. 00:21:32.85\00:21:34.80 Children's Church, 00:21:34.81\00:21:36.28 so he took what you teach at your ministry 00:21:36.29\00:21:39.77 and now he has appointed in Australia. Amen. 00:21:39.78\00:21:43.03 The essence really of the ministry 00:21:43.04\00:21:44.83 is that gentle life transformation 00:21:44.84\00:21:46.75 that God does in our lives 00:21:46.76\00:21:48.62 and then turns us around out of love for Him 00:21:48.63\00:21:50.98 to share with others in our market place. 00:21:50.99\00:21:53.67 It's similar to what our president talked about 00:21:53.68\00:21:56.24 last night about we start with ourselves 00:21:56.25\00:21:59.87 in our heart and we change ourselves 00:21:59.88\00:22:02.31 on the inside, the Lord changes 00:22:02.32\00:22:03.99 us on the inside and then we can reach out. 00:22:04.00\00:22:06.55 Now you've got, you've also done 00:22:06.56\00:22:08.82 this with people in England. 00:22:08.83\00:22:11.61 Tell me about maybe you have a story 00:22:11.62\00:22:15.41 about England and what happened there 00:22:15.42\00:22:18.49 with your ministry that's kind of international? 00:22:18.50\00:22:21.07 We were in England, in London, England, 00:22:21.08\00:22:23.49 a couple months ago where we established 00:22:23.50\00:22:25.38 the training center for the Trans-European 00:22:25.39\00:22:27.23 Division and after one class the facilitator 00:22:27.24\00:22:30.68 asked the children. 00:22:30.69\00:22:31.66 The class was on sharing Christ 00:22:31.67\00:22:33.15 with your friends and she asked the children, 00:22:33.16\00:22:35.58 is there something that you would like to share, 00:22:35.59\00:22:37.71 someway that you want to share Jesus 00:22:37.72\00:22:39.74 with others. One little girl 00:22:39.75\00:22:41.16 raised her hand and she said, 00:22:41.17\00:22:42.59 you know I really like to draw 00:22:42.60\00:22:44.45 and I know there is a boy down the street 00:22:44.46\00:22:46.48 who likes to draw and he is really good at it. 00:22:46.49\00:22:47.97 I think I want to invite him to my home, 00:22:47.98\00:22:51.27 into my family and we'll draw together 00:22:51.28\00:22:53.98 and I am going to be praying while I'm drawing 00:22:53.99\00:22:55.79 that God will help me to be able to share Jesus 00:22:55.80\00:22:57.73 with this boy. And how old was this girl? 00:22:57.74\00:22:59.83 She was about 9 years old. 00:22:59.84\00:23:00.95 Nine years old, so there is a 00:23:00.96\00:23:04.08 market place for children. 00:23:04.09\00:23:06.46 When we talk about sharing Christ 00:23:06.47\00:23:08.41 in the market place, 00:23:08.42\00:23:09.46 we think of just business 00:23:09.47\00:23:11.77 but this is their market place, 00:23:11.78\00:23:13.99 these young people, 00:23:14.00\00:23:14.97 you know as the saying goes, 00:23:14.98\00:23:16.90 preach always and use words if necessary, 00:23:16.91\00:23:20.97 and boy is this very applicable to this girl 00:23:20.98\00:23:24.46 in England. Well, tell us, 00:23:24.47\00:23:27.23 you've had 80 different people 00:23:27.24\00:23:30.72 come through and have you had people 00:23:30.73\00:23:32.62 approach you while you've been here 00:23:32.63\00:23:34.70 at your booth here at ASI? 00:23:34.71\00:23:37.22 We have, we've had a conference president 00:23:37.23\00:23:40.07 and several key leaders, 00:23:40.08\00:23:42.13 just interested church members, 00:23:42.14\00:23:45.00 we'd love to have more come by and learn. 00:23:45.01\00:23:46.78 So it's a way to reach out to our children, 00:23:46.79\00:23:51.32 8 to 13. You're doing a great ministry. 00:23:51.33\00:23:55.31 Anything you want to say in closing. 00:23:55.32\00:23:57.21 No. Just come by the booth 00:23:57.22\00:24:00.09 if you're here in Louisville 427, 00:24:00.10\00:24:02.81 or if you're watching on the web or 3ABN, 00:24:02.82\00:24:06.61 we'd love to have you visit our website at 00:24:06.62\00:24:08.71 kidsindiscipleship.org. For 60 years ASI 00:26:42.20\00:26:45.66 put a strong emphasis on having members 00:26:45.67\00:26:47.94 share their testimonies and stories 00:26:47.95\00:26:49.69 of how the Lord is working in their lives. 00:26:49.70\00:26:51.36 This members in action has served 00:26:51.37\00:26:53.34 as an inspiration to many who hear 00:26:53.35\00:26:55.67 and often results in lives being changed. 00:26:55.68\00:26:58.40 Tonight will be no exception is my prayer. 00:26:58.41\00:27:01.67 This evening I am joined on stage here 00:27:01.68\00:27:04.55 with Pastor Wendell Jeffrey 00:27:04.56\00:27:05.73 and DuPriest Eastern and I am so thrilled 00:27:05.74\00:27:09.50 for you Pastor Jeffrey to share with us 00:27:09.51\00:27:11.07 a little bit about your background 00:27:11.08\00:27:12.78 and your passion for working with 00:27:12.79\00:27:14.41 marginalized individuals? 00:27:14.42\00:27:16.02 Thank you very much Joy. 00:27:16.03\00:27:17.64 It has always been my pleasure, 00:27:17.65\00:27:20.94 my life work it seems to work with the 00:27:20.95\00:27:23.13 marginalized and those who are suffering 00:27:23.14\00:27:25.49 in the community. Ever since I was a little boy, 00:27:25.50\00:27:27.39 growing up in the projects, 00:27:27.40\00:27:29.70 back there in the Caribbean, 00:27:29.71\00:27:31.33 I would remember that when the guys 00:27:31.34\00:27:32.73 would be pelting at the old folks 00:27:32.74\00:27:34.41 or pulling at the mentally retarded 00:27:34.42\00:27:36.17 I would be one to say, no, don't do that and so on. 00:27:36.18\00:27:39.30 And I grew up like that, 00:27:39.31\00:27:40.95 I felt a call to the ministry and began 00:27:40.96\00:27:43.59 my theological studies back there in Trinidad. 00:27:43.60\00:27:46.00 I didn't complete it there, 00:27:46.01\00:27:48.67 I came over here and I was working 00:27:48.68\00:27:51.81 with a very large company. 00:27:51.82\00:27:53.92 I was a senior executive sales representative. 00:27:53.93\00:27:56.46 I am working for a lot of money 00:27:56.47\00:27:58.14 but I didn't feel satisfied, 00:27:58.15\00:28:00.81 so I quit the job and finished my 00:28:00.82\00:28:03.69 theological studies at Oakwood College 00:28:03.70\00:28:06.03 and then went onto in the seminary 00:28:06.04\00:28:07.91 at Andrews University. 00:28:07.92\00:28:09.55 And then you got started working 00:28:09.56\00:28:11.77 at a church that was in a Ghetto, 00:28:11.78\00:28:14.28 and share with us how your 00:28:14.29\00:28:15.79 Practical Christianity Ministry grew from that? 00:28:15.80\00:28:17.88 Amen. Well, I was assisting at the church 00:28:17.89\00:28:21.24 there in South Bay, Indiana. 00:28:21.25\00:28:22.84 And I wanted to go after the marginalized people. 00:28:22.85\00:28:27.91 The people who were really hurting 00:28:27.92\00:28:29.27 and I contacted a couple who had a bar, 00:28:29.28\00:28:33.79 a tavern that they had bought 00:28:33.80\00:28:37.38 and they weren't using and we went 00:28:37.39\00:28:41.34 and we got at the bar and we made the bar 00:28:41.35\00:28:44.43 into a church. It seems like a likely place. 00:28:44.44\00:28:47.55 Yeah, and so while we were, 00:28:49.51\00:28:51.16 I had the guys, I would go to the homeless 00:28:51.17\00:28:54.98 shelter and I would get the guys to come in 00:28:54.99\00:28:57.06 and help me got that bar 00:28:57.07\00:28:58.45 and so on as we were preparing it for a church 00:28:58.46\00:29:01.25 and then it dawned to me 00:29:01.26\00:29:02.63 that this would be a good way to get these guys 00:29:02.64\00:29:05.82 employed and to keep them out of the prison 00:29:05.83\00:29:08.02 and that's how the ministry started. 00:29:08.03\00:29:09.66 Okay, so that was Practical Christianity 00:29:09.67\00:29:11.90 Ministry and then you also were able 00:29:11.91\00:29:14.73 to get into prison. 00:29:14.74\00:29:15.71 Share a little bit about that story as well. 00:29:15.72\00:29:17.50 Okay, well, after we became know in South Bay 00:29:17.51\00:29:21.56 as the church where these ex-offenders 00:29:21.57\00:29:25.92 and recovering addicts could come. 00:29:25.93\00:29:27.45 Word began to get out as to 00:29:27.46\00:29:30.11 what we were doing, 00:29:30.12\00:29:31.11 we would receive a number of calls. 00:29:31.12\00:29:32.88 There was a meeting where they, 00:29:32.89\00:29:35.26 there was a guy who was the Chaplin 00:29:35.27\00:29:38.27 over all the prisons in Indiana. 00:29:38.28\00:29:40.74 I went a meeting that he was at, 00:29:40.75\00:29:42.82 I made a few comments in the meeting. 00:29:42.83\00:29:44.76 And when it was finished he approached me 00:29:44.77\00:29:47.07 and he said that he would like me to work 00:29:47.08\00:29:48.93 with the Department of Corrections for Indiana. 00:29:48.94\00:29:51.22 And they asked me to come in as a Chaplin 00:29:51.23\00:29:53.49 and I went and they gave me a course that 00:29:53.50\00:29:57.06 they asked me to teach. 00:29:57.07\00:29:58.57 Well, when I looked at the course, 00:29:58.58\00:30:00.33 I am a ex-offender myself, 00:30:00.34\00:30:02.88 so I looked at a course and I said to myself 00:30:02.89\00:30:05.75 that if I was in prison and somebody 00:30:05.76\00:30:08.47 shared this with me. 00:30:08.48\00:30:10.44 It wouldn't mean anything to me. 00:30:10.45\00:30:12.06 So I wrote a proposal to the prison, 00:30:12.07\00:30:13.94 the largest in Indiana, 00:30:13.95\00:30:16.67 they have close to 2000, close to 3200 men. 00:30:16.68\00:30:19.83 And so I wrote a proposal and I said to them, 00:30:19.84\00:30:22.00 can I create a lecture series 00:30:22.01\00:30:25.15 to teach instead of this and they accepted 00:30:25.16\00:30:27.53 the proposal. And when we started 00:30:27.54\00:30:29.29 we had 80 men coming to the class, 00:30:29.30\00:30:31.42 now we have three hundred in meeting. 00:30:31.43\00:30:33.41 Praise the Lord. And they have now asked us 00:30:33.42\00:30:34.65 to teach the course to all 3200 men. Amen. 00:30:34.66\00:30:38.84 Now Pastor Jeffrey would you share with us 00:30:43.96\00:30:46.30 just a little I think everybody 00:30:46.31\00:30:47.93 would be interested to know 00:30:47.94\00:30:49.31 some of the statistics in the United States 00:30:49.32\00:30:51.42 on prisons. We have a disaster to say 00:30:51.43\00:30:56.57 the least with prisons in the United States. 00:30:56.58\00:30:59.29 As we speak, there are 2 million people 00:30:59.30\00:31:03.78 incarcerated in the United States. 00:31:03.79\00:31:05.86 Then we have 7 million who have been released 00:31:05.87\00:31:11.20 but are still monitored by the Federal government 00:31:11.21\00:31:14.38 or by the local on probation or parole 00:31:14.39\00:31:16.99 or house arrest or work release 00:31:17.00\00:31:19.48 or something like that. 00:31:19.49\00:31:20.46 So as we speak you've got 9 million people 00:31:20.47\00:31:23.43 who are being, who are either incarcerated 00:31:23.44\00:31:26.02 or being monitored. Now only 10 percent 00:31:26.03\00:31:31.38 of released prisoners find gainful employment. 00:31:31.39\00:31:35.07 In other words, 90 percent of the people 00:31:35.08\00:31:39.50 who are coming out of prison are not gainfully 00:31:39.51\00:31:41.30 employed and that is why three out of every 00:31:41.31\00:31:43.51 five people who go to prison, 00:31:43.52\00:31:45.66 three out of every five go back to prison. 00:31:45.67\00:31:48.02 I'm gonna share some statistic with you Joy. 00:31:48.03\00:31:50.54 Eighty percent of all prisoners don't have a GED 00:31:50.55\00:31:57.60 or A high school diploma, 00:31:57.61\00:31:58.65 another 80 percent or 80 percent 00:31:58.66\00:32:01.77 of the same number were not gainfully employed 00:32:01.78\00:32:06.01 at the time they were arrested for the crime. 00:32:06.02\00:32:07.79 No matter what the crime was, 00:32:07.80\00:32:09.30 80 percent of them were not working, 00:32:09.31\00:32:11.41 90 percent of all prisoners were not actively 00:32:11.42\00:32:17.21 involved in any church at the time of the arrest. 00:32:17.22\00:32:20.34 And so what we've done with the Practical 00:32:20.35\00:32:22.50 Christianity Ministry is we have realized that 00:32:22.51\00:32:25.23 in order to reduce recidivism. 00:32:25.24\00:32:27.48 You have to answer those questions. 00:32:27.49\00:32:29.85 You've got to educate the prisoner, 00:32:29.86\00:32:31.43 you've got to teach them the skill 00:32:31.44\00:32:33.46 and you've got to find a church for them. 00:32:33.47\00:32:35.71 And unless we answer those questions 00:32:35.72\00:32:38.52 we will not reduce recidivism 00:32:38.53\00:32:41.01 in the United States of America. 00:32:41.02\00:32:42.85 Okay, so let's talk now with DuPriest 00:32:42.86\00:32:45.44 who has a testimony of his own. 00:32:45.45\00:32:48.42 Would you share just a little bit of that with us 00:32:48.43\00:32:50.69 and how it tied into Practical Christianity? 00:32:50.70\00:32:52.87 Thank you Joy. Oh, I was incarcerated 00:32:52.88\00:32:56.26 when I was 19 years old. 00:32:56.27\00:32:58.27 I did eleven and half years straight. 00:32:58.28\00:33:00.48 And I came out of prison in 2003 00:33:00.49\00:33:03.54 and when I came out it was hard for me because 00:33:03.55\00:33:07.22 I couldn't find a job, you know 00:33:07.23\00:33:10.01 I put in applications everywhere I went, 00:33:10.02\00:33:12.98 everybody turned me down and a friend of mine 00:33:12.99\00:33:16.87 he gave me Pastor Jeffrey's number 00:33:16.88\00:33:19.59 and I called Pastor Jeffrey and then I met 00:33:19.60\00:33:23.33 and talked with him. And the next day we met 00:33:23.34\00:33:26.45 the Mayor together and then two days later 00:33:26.46\00:33:29.49 I was working for him. 00:33:29.50\00:33:30.98 So you know it was a blessing. 00:33:30.99\00:33:33.94 Now Pastor Jeffrey, he was a wonderful addition 00:33:33.95\00:33:37.05 to your team, wasn't he? 00:33:37.06\00:33:38.34 Joy, he was a wonderful addition to my team 00:33:38.35\00:33:41.31 and some people come into the program. 00:33:41.32\00:33:43.37 We teach them construction, 00:33:43.38\00:33:44.65 I teach them how to renovate houses 00:33:44.66\00:33:46.30 and we have trained 60 people so far 00:33:46.31\00:33:49.22 in the last three years, 00:33:49.23\00:33:50.30 but when DuPriest come to the program, 00:33:50.31\00:33:52.56 DuPriest didn't know what side of the hammer 00:33:52.57\00:33:54.47 to hold and now DuPriest 00:33:54.48\00:33:56.84 is not only doing construction 00:33:56.85\00:33:58.26 but he is teaching the other junior guys 00:33:58.27\00:34:00.33 who come into the program how to renovate houses. 00:34:00.34\00:34:02.67 Praise the Lord. 00:34:02.68\00:34:04.03 Now I would like Pastor Jeffrey 00:34:10.22\00:34:11.74 to just share one more story with us 00:34:11.75\00:34:14.64 about an individual who was 00:34:14.65\00:34:16.64 impacted by Practical Christianity? 00:34:16.65\00:34:19.78 A young lady came to us because 00:34:19.79\00:34:23.26 we have women in the program sometimes 00:34:23.27\00:34:25.44 and she was, she was out on the streets, 00:34:25.45\00:34:28.19 she was a lady of the night, 00:34:28.20\00:34:29.86 she was trying out in drugs and somebody 00:34:29.87\00:34:32.50 told her about the program. 00:34:32.51\00:34:33.59 When she came to us she had no way 00:34:33.60\00:34:35.69 to leave so I spoke to my wife and she came to live 00:34:35.70\00:34:37.85 at our house, because we couldn't, 00:34:37.86\00:34:39.47 we have houses for the guys, 00:34:39.48\00:34:40.76 where we couldn't her with the guys. 00:34:40.77\00:34:41.95 So she came to our house to live 00:34:41.96\00:34:44.40 and we worked with her, 00:34:44.41\00:34:46.40 she was involved with the program, 00:34:46.41\00:34:47.97 she learned, she was doing construction 00:34:47.98\00:34:50.00 with the guys and then one day she said 00:34:50.01\00:34:52.40 she want to be baptized and we did some studies 00:34:52.41\00:34:55.14 with her and she was baptized 00:34:55.15\00:34:56.77 and she is now moved on, 00:34:56.78\00:34:58.82 she's in, I think Battlecreek 00:34:58.83\00:35:03.06 but she is studying to be a minister of the gospel. 00:35:03.07\00:35:08.04 Praise the Lord. Thank you both 00:35:08.05\00:35:09.56 so much for sharing. Amen, amen. 00:35:09.57\00:35:12.23 My next guest is Melody George 00:35:18.36\00:35:21.25 and Melody has a calling that is very unusual 00:35:21.26\00:35:26.58 for most of us and Melody, 00:35:26.59\00:35:28.63 I just wanted you to share how God 00:35:28.64\00:35:30.57 impressed on your heart to do 00:35:30.58\00:35:32.59 what you do in ministry? 00:35:32.60\00:35:34.24 Well, when I was at junior high school 00:35:34.25\00:35:36.88 I didn't know what I was gonna do for a career. 00:35:36.89\00:35:40.57 I knew that I wanted to have something 00:35:40.58\00:35:41.91 that I love doing and then have some 00:35:41.92\00:35:43.32 sort of ministry to be involved in on the site. 00:35:43.33\00:35:45.44 But I remember I went to a very meaningful 00:35:45.45\00:35:48.09 week of prayer and I just remembered 00:35:48.10\00:35:50.37 walking out of that meeting 00:35:50.38\00:35:51.45 and thinking I want, 00:35:51.46\00:35:53.07 I want every aspect of what I do. 00:35:53.08\00:35:55.73 You know, every minute, every hour, 00:35:55.74\00:35:58.21 my entire career to be 100 percent 00:35:58.22\00:36:00.93 focused toward serving God 00:36:00.94\00:36:02.39 and at that point I had a little bit of 00:36:02.40\00:36:04.82 interesting film and video and acting and song. 00:36:04.83\00:36:08.05 And it just stroked me in that moment, 00:36:08.06\00:36:09.80 I'm gonna be a film maker. 00:36:09.81\00:36:11.79 And so you went on to 00:36:11.80\00:36:14.58 Southern Adventist University, 00:36:14.59\00:36:16.14 you graduated with your film making degree 00:36:16.15\00:36:18.27 and as soon as you graduated 00:36:18.28\00:36:21.04 I am sure Hollywood people 00:36:21.05\00:36:22.09 were knocking on your door for Christian 00:36:22.10\00:36:25.16 themed movies. 00:36:25.17\00:36:26.61 Right, right, it's a big deal.. So... 00:36:26.62\00:36:30.12 that's too much. 00:36:30.13\00:36:31.10 So how did you make the decision 00:36:31.11\00:36:33.31 to go to Hollywood? 00:36:33.32\00:36:34.43 Well, when I graduated from Southern 00:36:34.44\00:36:36.99 I spent about 6 months living in 00:36:37.00\00:36:39.66 Chattanooga and working on campus 00:36:39.67\00:36:41.54 actually at Southern and obviously 00:36:41.55\00:36:43.65 you only have a certain amount of time 00:36:43.66\00:36:45.31 that you are able to work on campus 00:36:45.32\00:36:47.95 and that period ended 00:36:47.96\00:36:49.27 and so I started looking for jobs. 00:36:49.28\00:36:50.72 And it had always been an idea in the 00:36:50.73\00:36:54.03 back of my mind, maybe I will go to L.A. 00:36:54.04\00:36:55.97 one of these days but not yet 00:36:55.98\00:36:57.81 and I talked to my dad on a phone one night 00:36:57.82\00:37:00.02 that I was applying for job in Chattanooga. 00:37:00.03\00:37:01.61 He said, well, what about that old idea 00:37:01.62\00:37:03.48 of going out to L.A. and I said, 00:37:03.49\00:37:05.45 well, I just don't feel ready yet, 00:37:05.46\00:37:07.23 I don't know just doesn't feel right 00:37:07.24\00:37:08.93 but we got off the phone 00:37:08.94\00:37:10.27 and it was like God just impressed upon 00:37:10.28\00:37:12.97 my heart that this was where I needed to go 00:37:12.98\00:37:15.18 because I can't stop thinking about it 00:37:15.19\00:37:16.53 for the next couple of days 00:37:16.54\00:37:18.37 and I talked to my parents again, 00:37:18.38\00:37:20.63 we prayed about it together 00:37:20.64\00:37:21.77 and we just unanimously felt that it was time 00:37:21.78\00:37:24.36 for me to go and about three weeks from that day 00:37:24.37\00:37:26.98 I was in my car on the road 00:37:26.99\00:37:29.24 driving from Chattanooga out to Los Angeles. 00:37:29.25\00:37:32.13 What you would define as the worldly world. 00:37:32.14\00:37:35.80 Yes, for sure. 00:37:35.81\00:37:36.92 Tell me a little bit about how God affirmed 00:37:36.93\00:37:40.21 your choice and how He had led in this mission. 00:37:40.22\00:37:43.80 Well, He just affirmed once I got out to L.A. 00:37:43.81\00:37:46.47 just that I was suppose to be there 00:37:46.48\00:37:48.32 by really providing for my needs once I got 00:37:48.33\00:37:51.48 there because I did not have 00:37:51.49\00:37:53.23 you know a job waiting for me. 00:37:53.24\00:37:55.56 I had possibilities but 00:37:55.57\00:37:57.25 I had applied for a job before I even 00:37:58.41\00:38:00.07 left Chattanooga and I was with a Christian 00:38:00.08\00:38:03.27 guy who is looking for an editor in the program 00:38:03.28\00:38:05.57 that I specialize in. He said, well, 00:38:05.58\00:38:07.53 I like your work, give me a call once 00:38:07.54\00:38:09.75 you get out and so I got out to L.A. 00:38:09.76\00:38:12.15 I called him, you know, within a couple of days 00:38:12.16\00:38:14.13 of having arrived and I interviewed within 00:38:14.14\00:38:17.54 that week and he hired me and he interviewed 00:38:17.55\00:38:19.53 me at Universal Studio and so it's been 00:38:19.54\00:38:22.42 amazing to have somebody who is a committed 00:38:22.71\00:38:24.77 Christian to sort of mentor me because 00:38:24.78\00:38:26.55 he has been working in the industry for 00:38:26.56\00:38:27.75 for several years. So just the fact that 00:38:27.76\00:38:30.26 I met him and he was hired immediately in sort 00:38:30.27\00:38:33.50 of a freelance position was 00:38:33.51\00:38:34.72 definitely an affirmation. 00:38:34.96\00:38:36.49 So that was a wonderful positive affirmation 00:38:37.15\00:38:39.37 but everybody knows here that they are lot 00:38:39.45\00:38:42.62 of moral dilemmas that occur when you are 00:38:42.63\00:38:44.82 working in that environment there. 00:38:44.83\00:38:46.59 It is not a Christian place as a whole. 00:38:46.78\00:38:50.14 What has been some of your experiences 00:38:50.15\00:38:52.25 where you have been able to use your 00:38:52.26\00:38:53.52 friendship evangelism? Right, well, it's been 00:38:53.53\00:38:56.20 definitely a bit of culture shock, 00:38:57.51\00:38:58.68 but I had to get used to. But I remember the first 00:38:58.85\00:39:02.03 job I had working on set. Just some of the people 00:39:02.51\00:39:05.55 that you run into, you definitely work in 00:39:05.56\00:39:07.44 some very dark places, it's a stereotype but it 00:39:07.45\00:39:10.11 definitely has some truth to it. 00:39:10.37\00:39:11.87 And I remember just one man that I met him 00:39:12.08\00:39:14.64 worked with, it was unbelievable that, 00:39:14.65\00:39:17.78 it was sort of like he was one of those 00:39:18.30\00:39:19.60 cliched bad guys from a movie, you know, 00:39:19.61\00:39:22.01 one of the villains that's out to get you 00:39:22.02\00:39:23.57 and I just remember thinking, 00:39:23.72\00:39:25.02 do people like this actually exist, 00:39:25.66\00:39:27.66 and they do. But and you know, 00:39:28.59\00:39:30.81 but, you know I have grown up all my life 00:39:33.86\00:39:36.30 hearing about loving your enemy, 00:39:36.31\00:39:39.35 blessing those who curse you and doing 00:39:39.71\00:39:41.44 good to those who hate you. 00:39:41.45\00:39:42.50 I've never had such an opportunity 00:39:42.82\00:39:45.14 to exercise that, and. Praise the Lord. 00:39:45.15\00:39:48.58 He has given the grace to do it and it's been 00:39:49.51\00:39:53.14 amazing to out and finally be in that setting 00:39:53.15\00:39:56.24 and see the difference that it can make for 00:39:56.68\00:39:58.41 somebody who has Christ to be able to 00:39:58.42\00:40:01.52 uphold those principles and just maintain 00:40:01.53\00:40:03.80 your peace. And just to communicate that, 00:40:03.81\00:40:06.72 the way you're treating me does not affect 00:40:06.96\00:40:09.41 me because you know I have the balance, 00:40:09.42\00:40:13.13 I am solid I know that my value comes from Christ 00:40:13.23\00:40:15.93 and you know not that I would say that 00:40:15.94\00:40:17.54 specifically to Him but just you're demeanor on set, 00:40:17.55\00:40:18.52 demeanor on set, you know just 00:40:19.83\00:40:22.15 that communicate so much that you can just 00:40:22.45\00:40:24.05 serve with a humble heart and take it 00:40:24.06\00:40:27.29 you know that you can take the criticism 00:40:27.30\00:40:29.23 it says a lot. Being like Jesus 00:40:29.93\00:40:31.88 in a very Godless place. You've committed 00:40:31.89\00:40:36.09 yourself to the frontlines of ministry 00:40:36.10\00:40:38.32 in Hollywood something that a lot of us probably 00:40:38.33\00:40:41.07 would not be able to do. Do you have any 00:40:41.08\00:40:43.40 request from the audience for your work? 00:40:43.41\00:40:44.38 Just pray your prayers because it's 00:40:46.67\00:40:48.46 you know it's easy to say well, 00:40:48.85\00:40:50.07 please pray for us but the spiritual 00:40:50.08\00:40:52.18 battle is very, very real and I've 00:40:52.19\00:40:54.80 definitely witnessed some very dark places 00:40:54.81\00:40:58.09 and worked in some very dark places 00:40:58.10\00:41:00.86 and I never before have I, 00:41:01.35\00:41:02.83 have I needed so much to spend that time 00:41:02.84\00:41:06.28 abiding with God every morning. 00:41:06.96\00:41:08.89 I am just connecting and we connecting 00:41:09.17\00:41:12.25 so that throughout the day I have 00:41:12.44\00:41:14.01 that peace it's really important 00:41:14.02\00:41:15.73 so I appreciate your prayers just for me 00:41:15.74\00:41:17.92 and for other Christians all my crews out there. 00:41:17.93\00:41:20.62 You have such a wonderful opportunity to offer 00:41:21.10\00:41:23.49 the world's spiritual theme to films 00:41:23.50\00:41:25.17 and we just praise the Lord for your work there. 00:41:25.44\00:41:27.72 Thanks Joy. Thanks Melody. Thank you. 00:41:28.23\00:41:29.41 Hi, Ted. Hi. Ted, you're a tough guy 00:41:36.79\00:41:39.42 to track down and he, 00:41:39.43\00:41:40.55 he is working with the youth, 00:41:41.55\00:41:42.94 wonderful, wonderful. I understand that 00:41:43.66\00:41:46.60 you yourself are a young disciple. 00:41:46.61\00:41:48.71 Yes, well, I was about 14 years old when 00:41:52.66\00:41:53.63 Young Disciples Ministries began and so I guess 00:41:53.64\00:41:55.64 I just sort of grew up with it and I can't 00:41:56.16\00:41:58.77 believe it's already been about 15 years 00:41:58.78\00:42:00.95 that I have been involved and Young Disciples 00:42:00.96\00:42:02.69 has been such a blessing to me. 00:42:02.70\00:42:04.06 Tell me more about the ministry 00:42:04.38\00:42:06.65 of Young Disciple? Well, Young Disciple 00:42:06.66\00:42:09.66 Ministries started with the Young Disciple 00:42:09.67\00:42:12.52 Magazine that many of you've seen 00:42:12.53\00:42:14.46 and it was a Bible study magazine had true 00:42:14.47\00:42:18.05 stories and my mom started it, 00:42:18.06\00:42:22.60 looking for something for us kids. 00:42:22.61\00:42:25.06 And she didn't find what she was looking 00:42:25.71\00:42:27.40 for something that really taught Bible study 00:42:27.41\00:42:29.36 principles and dealt in a little deeper 00:42:29.37\00:42:31.91 and so she kind of just started something 00:42:31.92\00:42:33.91 for us and it just grew from there 00:42:33.92\00:42:36.43 and now it's a full column magazine that goes 00:42:36.44\00:42:38.50 all over the world. So you have 00:42:38.51\00:42:40.17 the magazine and then you also have a camp. 00:42:40.18\00:42:42.77 Yes. I am now the camp director for Young 00:42:43.45\00:42:46.85 Disciple Youth Bible Camps and we just 00:42:46.86\00:42:50.25 got finished with camp about a week before 00:42:50.26\00:42:52.55 ASI started. And had about 200 00:42:52.72\00:42:56.55 campers that came, wanting to learn more 00:42:56.56\00:42:59.49 about how they can study the Bible 00:42:59.50\00:43:01.28 and going home with the desire to start 00:43:02.23\00:43:05.31 outreach in their churches and learning how 00:43:05.37\00:43:08.59 to share and to study the Bible and to bring 00:43:08.60\00:43:11.86 that home to make it alive in their lives. 00:43:11.87\00:43:14.70 And the reason I introduced Ted 00:43:14.97\00:43:16.62 as a young disciple is that we kind of a 00:43:16.63\00:43:19.88 special impact that's happening from 00:43:19.89\00:43:21.95 this ministry because Ted himself already 00:43:21.96\00:43:25.50 is an officer of ASI, North Specific 00:43:25.51\00:43:27.71 Union Chapter, he is a youth leader 00:43:27.72\00:43:30.43 and it's just an amazing opportunity for us 00:43:30.75\00:43:33.27 to gather these very Bible based, 00:43:33.28\00:43:36.03 wonderful students of the Bible. 00:43:36.52\00:43:38.44 So just wanted to mention that you have 00:43:38.89\00:43:42.32 a new tool available that people can use, 00:43:42.33\00:43:46.58 that's specifically focused on the youth. 00:43:46.59\00:43:49.18 Would you share a little bit more about that? 00:43:49.33\00:43:51.31 Yes. Well, the truth for youth program 00:43:51.44\00:43:54.65 was born just a little over a year ago 00:43:54.82\00:43:58.67 and it started out kind of the same way 00:43:59.59\00:44:02.09 as the magazine did in terms that we do 00:44:02.10\00:44:05.20 youth of evangelism also every year 00:44:05.21\00:44:07.13 we take a group of teens to the Philippines. 00:44:07.14\00:44:09.80 They do the preaching, 00:44:10.19\00:44:11.16 they do the Bible work, they do the kids meetings 00:44:11.20\00:44:13.21 but we had the wonderful new beginnings 00:44:13.22\00:44:17.14 program to use for the adult meetings 00:44:17.15\00:44:19.13 and that what's the teens are preaching but 00:44:19.14\00:44:20.93 when we went to kids program we didn't find 00:44:23.73\00:44:24.70 anything like and we were using crafts, 00:44:24.71\00:44:26.01 we were using felts. When you have 300 00:44:26.02\00:44:28.85 kids they can't see the felts and we were looking 00:44:28.86\00:44:32.38 for something that we could use 00:44:32.39\00:44:34.56 and we didn't find it. And so again we 00:44:35.01\00:44:37.55 thought well, we will just hav e 00:44:37.56\00:44:38.55 to sort of put something together that we can 00:44:38.56\00:44:40.77 use and so we started to finding out about 00:44:40.78\00:44:43.88 it and it's just kept growing and growing, 00:44:43.89\00:44:45.64 the more we told people about it the more 00:44:45.65\00:44:47.53 they said, oh, yeah, you put it together, 00:44:47.54\00:44:49.75 we want that too. And so that's how 00:44:49.76\00:44:53.20 I came into being, 00:44:53.21\00:44:54.18 we were working with ASI, 00:44:54.19\00:44:57.18 we were working with global evangelism 00:44:57.19\00:44:59.79 and we were able to put together as a team, 00:45:00.72\00:45:05.75 beautiful pictures just like the new beginnings 00:45:06.38\00:45:09.31 with the borders and truth for today pictures. 00:45:09.74\00:45:13.57 And the script that you can present 00:45:14.24\00:45:16.45 or young people can present ages 5 to 13, 00:45:16.46\00:45:19.60 so now we have not only the new beginnings 00:45:19.61\00:45:22.70 and other programs for the adults but 00:45:22.71\00:45:25.30 there is a complete program for 00:45:25.31\00:45:28.19 the ages 5 to 13, an evangelistic series. 00:45:28.20\00:45:31.76 So now we don't just produce what we 00:45:31.77\00:45:33.23 don't just preach one of evangelistic 00:45:33.24\00:45:34.95 series but two; one for the adults 00:45:34.96\00:45:37.39 and one for the kids. Now, when we talked 00:45:38.07\00:45:41.67 a little bit I just found it fascinating that 00:45:41.68\00:45:46.22 there are some good stories related to 00:45:46.50\00:45:49.93 the use of these CD and DVD. 00:45:49.94\00:45:51.86 Would you like to share it? 00:45:52.25\00:45:53.22 Sure, Well, we were sort of testing it out 00:45:53.23\00:45:56.32 in the Philippines as it was underdevelopment 00:45:56.33\00:45:58.59 and then finally ASI actually helped produce, 00:45:58.60\00:46:02.38 the North West ASI chapter it helped 00:46:03.11\00:46:05.97 with the funding to produce it. 00:46:06.26\00:46:07.85 In the first year we produced, 00:46:08.20\00:46:09.76 we did an evangelistic series 00:46:09.77\00:46:11.94 and the ministerial director for 00:46:12.61\00:46:13.91 the North Specific, North Philippines 00:46:13.92\00:46:17.03 Union mission came and he was observing 00:46:17.04\00:46:20.56 the program and he was with the adults 00:46:20.57\00:46:22.14 and he was watching the kids preaching 00:46:22.15\00:46:23.75 and he was really excited about that and we said, 00:46:23.76\00:46:26.34 Pastor, come and look at the kids meetings. 00:46:26.82\00:46:29.63 We want you to see this program. 00:46:30.46\00:46:32.15 He said, oh, no that's, you know, 00:46:32.16\00:46:33.92 he was watching the adult meetings 00:46:33.93\00:46:35.60 and so we finally dragged him over 00:46:35.61\00:46:38.62 there and said, come on, you got to see this. 00:46:38.63\00:46:40.64 And so He went over and he never went back 00:46:41.55\00:46:43.26 to adult meetings. He just got stuck there 00:46:43.27\00:46:47.10 and when we saw him later, excuse me, 00:46:47.11\00:46:50.37 later that night, he was just totally 00:46:50.38\00:46:53.72 blown away and he said, you have to come 00:46:53.73\00:46:55.84 and do this in Manila. We have a field school 00:46:55.85\00:46:57.80 training for all of our pastors that graduate 00:46:57.81\00:47:00.89 and we need you to train them 00:47:01.13\00:47:02.71 in this kind of evangelism. 00:47:02.98\00:47:04.49 And so the next year we went to Manila and did a, 00:47:05.30\00:47:08.36 there was a large of evangelistic series 00:47:08.37\00:47:10.11 in the city for the adults and they also 00:47:10.12\00:47:12.65 wanted us to do the kids program with 00:47:12.66\00:47:14.69 the truth for youth. And so they had a 00:47:14.70\00:47:18.58 building all prepared for us but some reason 00:47:18.59\00:47:20.71 they demolished it just before we got there 00:47:20.72\00:47:22.52 so they ended up putting us in the parking lot. 00:47:22.53\00:47:25.37 And so we thought well, 00:47:26.61\00:47:27.73 that's fun you know, 00:47:27.74\00:47:28.71 felt a little put down but we went out there 00:47:29.45\00:47:31.28 and we did it and we asked for pastors 00:47:31.29\00:47:34.50 to come in the last night because we knew 00:47:34.51\00:47:36.04 a lot of young people were gonna make a 00:47:36.05\00:47:37.51 decision for Christ. We're gonna want 00:47:37.52\00:47:39.56 to be baptized and no pastor showed 00:47:39.57\00:47:42.11 up and we said, where are they, 00:47:42.12\00:47:44.00 well, they are on the adult meeting, 00:47:44.01\00:47:45.28 and so finally brought them out and it turns 00:47:45.73\00:47:47.74 out more young people even though 00:47:47.75\00:47:50.11 there are about five hundred young people 00:47:50.12\00:47:51.72 and thousands in the adult meeting more 00:47:51.73\00:47:54.16 of the children made a decision for Christ 00:47:54.17\00:47:56.38 even than the adults did. So when we start noticing 00:47:56.84\00:47:59.84 people dwindling in this meeting to well know 00:47:59.85\00:48:01.64 where where to find them. 00:48:01.65\00:48:02.62 Amen. I know this is a tool and a resource 00:48:02.87\00:48:06.37 the people are gonna want to use. 00:48:06.38\00:48:08.42 Where can they find it? Can they come by 00:48:09.10\00:48:12.12 your booth and discuss more with you. 00:48:12.13\00:48:14.21 We have a booth here at ASI, 00:48:14.57\00:48:16.97 also youngdisciple.com. It's being translated 00:48:16.98\00:48:20.30 things to ASI into four different languages 00:48:20.31\00:48:23.08 and others are also in the works. 00:48:23.09\00:48:24.99 Thank you so much for sharing. Thank you. 00:48:25.44\00:48:27.56 I am so excited to get to share, 00:48:36.12\00:48:38.28 have Daryl and Mary Jo share a little bit. 00:48:39.27\00:48:41.24 I know that we could probably spend about 00:48:41.39\00:48:43.16 three hours talking with there, 00:48:43.26\00:48:46.10 with them about their ministry. 00:48:46.73\00:48:48.02 Tell me about how the Lord led you into ministry? 00:48:49.71\00:48:53.31 Hi, I am Daryl, and I am Mary Jo. 00:48:54.25\00:48:56.40 And we are business owners from Payson, 00:48:56.56\00:48:58.22 Arizona. This is story is not about us, 00:48:58.23\00:49:00.87 it's about how good God is to us. 00:49:00.88\00:49:03.76 In year 2000, Mary and my, 00:49:05.11\00:49:07.42 our lives took us so far away from church 00:49:07.43\00:49:10.65 that we would do, our membership 00:49:10.66\00:49:12.19 from the Adventist Church and even though 00:49:12.20\00:49:14.91 we gave upon God, God did not give up on us. 00:49:14.92\00:49:17.77 Several years later we found ourselves 00:49:18.90\00:49:21.04 working away back to the church knowing 00:49:21.78\00:49:23.57 we had something very missing in our life 00:49:23.58\00:49:25.82 and one Sabbath we decided we're gonna 00:49:26.65\00:49:29.31 go back to the home church in Payson. 00:49:29.32\00:49:31.67 We weren't suppose to be there but we 00:49:32.58\00:49:33.88 had an opportunity to get back in town early. 00:49:33.89\00:49:36.60 We arrived at church and lo and behold 00:49:37.07\00:49:38.60 there was a man name Duane McKey 00:49:38.61\00:49:40.12 that he was preaching there. 00:49:40.13\00:49:41.29 We didn't know Duane had no idea who he was 00:49:41.96\00:49:44.06 but he had a wonderful sermon. 00:49:44.07\00:49:45.64 Our little church had a potluck afterward 00:49:46.23\00:49:48.10 and by the time, it was the time 00:49:48.40\00:49:50.12 for Mary Jo and I to sit down there were no 00:49:50.13\00:49:51.79 seats left except for next to the conference 00:49:51.80\00:49:54.90 president of who we would have never chosen 00:49:54.91\00:49:56.80 to sit next to at that time. 00:49:56.81\00:49:58.91 Now we can't ever get to sit with Elder McKey. 00:49:59.16\00:50:01.59 Anyway leading up to that two days before 00:50:02.82\00:50:07.29 I have been for months before, 00:50:07.60\00:50:08.91 I have been praying to God. 00:50:08.92\00:50:09.97 God worship what should we do about church? 00:50:10.22\00:50:11.80 Should we go to Payson? 00:50:11.81\00:50:12.78 Should we go to this Church down in Phoenix, 00:50:12.79\00:50:14.97 where do you want us to be, 00:50:14.98\00:50:15.95 and out of frustration two days before I've 00:50:15.96\00:50:18.38 finally say God; I will go where ever 00:50:18.39\00:50:20.05 you want us to go and then we met Duane 00:50:20.06\00:50:22.55 and probably if you know Duane and Kathy, 00:50:22.56\00:50:24.66 you know what happened to us. 00:50:24.67\00:50:26.04 Now the rest of the story. 00:50:26.94\00:50:28.12 So, basically you now have a lot of ministry, 00:50:30.52\00:50:33.87 is that right? That's correct. Share with me 00:50:34.47\00:50:36.05 a little bit about what the Lord 00:50:36.06\00:50:37.35 has led you to do? Well, as a result of that 00:50:37.36\00:50:40.03 potluck that day, that meeting with Duane 00:50:40.04\00:50:42.08 and Kathy McKey. They invited us to go 00:50:42.09\00:50:43.94 to Kenya and we were totally shocked 00:50:43.95\00:50:47.16 by this invitation, we were very unlikely 00:50:47.17\00:50:49.25 missionaries but we went home and we prayed 00:50:49.26\00:50:52.66 about it and we decided well if God would 00:50:52.67\00:50:54.55 open now the doors with our business 00:50:54.56\00:50:56.38 so that we could live for that long that 00:50:56.81\00:50:59.03 we would do it and amazingly there 00:50:59.04\00:51:01.42 was only about a month until it was time to go. 00:51:01.43\00:51:03.45 We were able to make arrangements 00:51:03.46\00:51:05.40 for our business, get the airline 00:51:05.41\00:51:07.45 reservations and we were able to go. 00:51:08.02\00:51:10.64 It totally changed our lives. 00:51:11.54\00:51:13.29 The experience of getting the ShareHim 00:51:13.50\00:51:15.70 presentations and how to depend on God 00:51:15.71\00:51:19.26 for everything. We were so far 00:51:19.27\00:51:21.48 out of our comfort zone and totally 00:51:21.49\00:51:24.10 depended on God. We loved that feeling, 00:51:24.11\00:51:26.85 we never wanted lose that. 00:51:27.32\00:51:29.07 Before we left Kenya we prayed together 00:51:29.24\00:51:32.18 and we made a commitment to God that 00:51:32.48\00:51:34.13 we would God home and get to work right away. 00:51:34.14\00:51:38.12 And one of the first things we did was we 00:51:38.86\00:51:40.90 thought well, if we can do those 00:51:40.91\00:51:42.20 meetings in Kenya we need to do them 00:51:42.21\00:51:44.35 here at home. So we talked to our 00:51:44.36\00:51:47.31 pastor and He was agreed with it so we 00:51:47.32\00:51:51.18 arranged between our Pastor and our 00:51:51.19\00:51:53.42 church to secure an outreach meeting place 00:51:53.43\00:51:56.66 which we call the meeting place. 00:51:56.67\00:51:58.30 We had some meetings right away. 00:51:58.66\00:52:00.31 We've been having a number of evangelistic 00:52:01.92\00:52:04.62 programs there ever since in the last two years. 00:52:05.46\00:52:08.04 It has just been incredible 00:52:08.05\00:52:09.32 in our little town. We also see our 00:52:09.57\00:52:13.11 business differently. We were able to join 00:52:13.12\00:52:15.41 ASI and then it's helped us to see our business 00:52:15.42\00:52:18.66 as a way to spread the good news 00:52:19.07\00:52:20.99 and not just to make money and God has 00:52:21.36\00:52:23.96 blessed us as a result. So, and then our major 00:52:23.97\00:52:28.90 focus is what we want to do in Kenya. 00:52:28.91\00:52:31.14 We've been back there a number of times 00:52:31.15\00:52:32.94 and I would like Daryl tell about that. 00:52:32.95\00:52:34.50 So the Lord flipped things upside down for you. 00:52:34.52\00:52:36.71 It used to be 90 percent business, 00:52:36.72\00:52:38.38 well, almost no ministry and now it's 00:52:39.10\00:52:40.82 90 percent ministry, praise the Lord. 00:52:40.83\00:52:43.20 And you now have a special emphasis 00:52:43.89\00:52:46.09 that he has caught your heart 00:52:46.76\00:52:48.07 and the Lord has led you to work on. 00:52:48.08\00:52:49.81 Share with me a little bit about how 00:52:50.16\00:52:51.86 that occurred? Yes, we have been back 00:52:51.87\00:52:54.20 to Kenya in two years. it was exactly two years 00:52:54.21\00:52:56.53 ago we went first time, 00:52:56.54\00:52:57.54 we've been back five times. 00:52:57.55\00:52:59.08 I was talking about someone little bit ago, 00:53:00.34\00:53:01.68 we've actually done five ShareHim campaigns 00:53:01.69\00:53:04.73 there now in two years. When we were there 00:53:04.74\00:53:08.48 on our first campaign that we noticed 00:53:08.49\00:53:10.38 on Sabbath morning they started coming about 00:53:10.39\00:53:12.14 7, 7:30 and they stayed all day long 00:53:12.15\00:53:15.42 and we're in Sub-Saharan, 00:53:15.43\00:53:16.47 it was very hot there. So twelve and thirteen 00:53:16.48\00:53:19.26 hours they went without drinking any water 00:53:19.27\00:53:21.64 at all and we were going something is very 00:53:21.65\00:53:23.01 wrong with this picture. We started checking into 00:53:23.02\00:53:25.86 it and we realized that so many of them 00:53:25.87\00:53:28.39 were dying because the water was so 00:53:28.40\00:53:30.53 polluted there. So when we came back, 00:53:30.54\00:53:33.60 we took it as a personal ministry 00:53:33.61\00:53:35.06 I thought well, you know, 00:53:35.07\00:53:36.15 it shouldn't be that hard to get fresh water, 00:53:36.16\00:53:38.50 so we started putting in a water purification 00:53:38.98\00:53:41.84 system that oh it was a good thing that God 00:53:41.85\00:53:45.49 gives us just what we can handle a little bit 00:53:45.50\00:53:47.61 at a time because if we would have seen 00:53:47.62\00:53:49.19 two years ago how big this project was we 00:53:49.20\00:53:52.01 would have been discouraged, 00:53:52.02\00:53:52.99 but we came back last week arrived home 00:53:53.00\00:53:55.12 on Friday, and last Wednesday 00:53:55.13\00:53:58.00 culminated our efforts of a year and half of 00:53:58.53\00:54:01.46 being able to provide fresh water to a village 00:54:01.47\00:54:04.37 that's never had the fresh water, 00:54:04.38\00:54:06.10 we now have, when the wind 00:54:06.58\00:54:07.88 is blowing we have 4 inch pipe that goes 00:54:07.89\00:54:11.04 out in the Lake Victoria, 00:54:11.05\00:54:12.29 that pulls the water and spreads it over 00:54:12.30\00:54:15.21 almost a two mile area with 5 spouts and 18,000 00:54:15.51\00:54:18.97 gallons of water storage and that's just one 00:54:18.98\00:54:22.64 of the first phase what we were doing with 00:54:22.65\00:54:24.29 the water project. And I understand, 00:54:24.30\00:54:26.98 oh, yes. Praise the Lord. 00:54:26.99\00:54:28.67 Like I said we could spent three hours here, 00:54:32.98\00:54:34.84 it just gets more and more exciting. 00:54:34.85\00:54:36.55 While you were there working 00:54:37.43\00:54:38.40 on the water project, you had a, 00:54:38.41\00:54:40.64 a story that, that has led you into the next phase. 00:54:41.94\00:54:44.70 One of the things we noticed the first trip 00:54:45.74\00:54:47.29 we went there was the number of orphans, 00:54:47.30\00:54:49.28 there were so many orphans children, 00:54:49.29\00:54:50.91 we were actually shocked to find out 00:54:51.24\00:54:52.96 that just because they are orphans, 00:54:52.97\00:54:54.64 does not mean they are living in orphanage, 00:54:54.95\00:54:57.31 they live in child headed homes which was 00:54:57.75\00:55:00.89 just incredible to us, that's one of the things 00:55:01.99\00:55:04.52 we wanted to be help with and its very 00:55:04.53\00:55:07.73 sad for the children Sthere because 00:55:07.74\00:55:10.11 there is no orphanage, 00:55:10.12\00:55:11.19 there is no supervision, they are lucky if they 00:55:11.20\00:55:12.98 can scrounge for anything at all to eat. 00:55:12.99\00:55:15.41 We really wanted to do what we could help them. 00:55:15.63\00:55:17.80 The reason there are so many orphans is because 00:55:18.91\00:55:20.84 of the high rate of AIDS and that is spread 00:55:20.85\00:55:24.50 by the fishing culture there in Lake Victoria, 00:55:24.51\00:55:27.22 where the fishermen travel around and they 00:55:27.23\00:55:29.99 will only sell the fish to the women and the girls 00:55:30.00\00:55:33.46 who give them what they want. 00:55:33.47\00:55:34.88 It's a very sad thing and its spreading AIDS 00:55:35.12\00:55:38.43 at an incredible rate. So its left an entire 00:55:38.44\00:55:40.79 generation missing, where they had just 00:55:40.80\00:55:43.06 young children and older people but no parents. 00:55:43.54\00:55:46.99 We really had a burden to help them. 00:55:48.05\00:55:49.71 So we are involved in an orphan feeding 00:55:49.88\00:55:51.59 program over there now, helping with it. 00:55:51.60\00:55:54.07 Right now we are able to feed 48 00:55:54.56\00:55:56.52 of the 200 orphans, one meal a day, 00:55:56.53\00:55:59.99 five days a week. That's not much 00:56:00.00\00:56:01.90 but we like to increase it to feed all two 00:56:01.91\00:56:03.81 hundred to do that we need to get a orphan 00:56:03.82\00:56:06.74 feeding shelter built, that's our next big focus. 00:56:06.75\00:56:09.59 One of the other things we did while 00:56:11.39\00:56:12.83 we were there, each time we tried 00:56:12.84\00:56:14.40 to do meetings and this last trip 00:56:14.41\00:56:16.65 was no exception. We did meeting in two 00:56:16.66\00:56:18.55 different villages and the second village 00:56:18.56\00:56:21.95 was just had an incredible Church behind 00:56:22.55\00:56:26.02 these meeting. They did so much preparation, 00:56:26.03\00:56:28.60 they cleared out a clearing in the middle 00:56:28.61\00:56:30.66 of the bush. Hand, hand built a road 00:56:30.67\00:56:34.07 about a mile long to get to the meetings site, 00:56:34.08\00:56:36.52 personally visited every family which is probably 00:56:36.92\00:56:39.53 about three hundred homes and incredible 00:56:39.54\00:56:42.44 stories came out that meeting. 00:56:42.45\00:56:43.89 I'll let Daryl talk first about one of those 00:56:43.90\00:56:46.44 special ones. Well one of the thing 00:56:46.45\00:56:49.08 that really touched us is we found out 00:56:49.09\00:56:50.93 the reason they wanted to have these meetings 00:56:50.94\00:56:53.58 in this area that were so remote is because 00:56:53.59\00:56:56.27 there was one church there was in that area, 00:56:56.28\00:56:58.23 there wasn't an Adventist church and they 00:56:58.24\00:57:00.53 wanted to have this meetings out where there 00:57:00.54\00:57:02.86 was a lot of non-church members. 00:57:02.92\00:57:05.44 So that's why they went all this 00:57:05.75\00:57:06.83 work to do this well. As the baptisms 00:57:06.84\00:57:09.74 were taking place one of the church elders 00:57:09.75\00:57:11.73 started saying well, 00:57:11.74\00:57:12.71 you see that whole family there. 00:57:12.72\00:57:13.83 They were converted and started telling 00:57:14.29\00:57:15.97 stories but the most compelling story was 00:57:15.98\00:57:18.84 about a little, a 11-year-old girl 00:57:18.85\00:57:21.33 whose parents were actually running 00:57:21.44\00:57:23.67 this other church, this inner faith church 00:57:23.91\00:57:26.67 and they wanted her to join the church 00:57:27.00\00:57:28.67 and she had been in touch with the elders 00:57:28.90\00:57:31.43 of the Adventist church, 00:57:31.44\00:57:32.41 the local church there and she refused it, 00:57:32.42\00:57:34.84 11 years old, she refused her 00:57:34.85\00:57:36.37 parents to join she says you are not 00:57:36.38\00:57:39.05 teaching truth, you are not 00:57:39.06\00:57:40.70 teaching truth so. She convinced them 00:57:40.71\00:57:43.33 to start coming to the meetings that 00:57:43.41\00:57:44.89 we were holding. They came to the meeting, 00:57:44.90\00:57:47.71 the entire church was closed down 00:57:47.72\00:57:49.85 and was baptized. Praise the Lord, 00:57:49.86\00:57:52.48 that's because of an 11-year-old girl, 00:57:53.95\00:57:55.68 so don't think ever think that children do not 00:57:55.69\00:57:58.74 have a place in sharing the good news of Jesus. 00:57:58.75\00:58:01.82 I want to thank you both so much for sharing 00:58:02.51\00:58:04.31 and you're an inspiration to drop everything 00:58:04.32\00:58:06.82 that we're doing and serve the Lord. 00:58:06.83\00:58:08.61 Thank you guys. Thank you very much. 00:58:09.12\00:58:10.19
