Today we are here to celebrate 60 years of ASI 00:01:00.53\00:01:03.83 ministries. And in this hour we have the 00:01:03.84\00:01:06.51 privilege to focus on the history of self 00:01:06.52\00:01:09.79 supporting medical missionary work. 00:01:09.80\00:01:12.09 For some attending this ASI session, 00:01:12.79\00:01:15.15 the history we are about to share in picture and 00:01:15.16\00:01:18.16 testimony is not new to you, 00:01:18.17\00:01:20.25 in fact many of you are part of it. 00:01:20.91\00:01:23.12 We trust that during this hour of looking back 00:01:23.71\00:01:27.00 on what has been done as well as what is 00:01:27.01\00:01:29.26 currently being done you and the 3 ABN viewers, 00:01:29.27\00:01:32.70 audience will be blessed. Seventh-day Adventist 00:01:33.37\00:01:36.63 early on had an interest in health 00:01:36.64\00:01:38.70 reform emphasis, emphasizing the prevention 00:01:38.71\00:01:42.22 of disease over the common focus on acute care. 00:01:42.23\00:01:45.98 Back in the time when physicians were 00:01:45.99\00:01:48.53 prescribing smoking to relax one's nerves. 00:01:48.54\00:01:51.52 The church in 1848 through Ellen White 00:01:51.53\00:01:55.64 taught that tobacco was harmful and went 00:01:55.65\00:01:58.31 another step in advance teaching that tea and 00:01:58.32\00:02:01.27 coffee were injurious. It was in 1863 that the 00:02:01.28\00:02:05.79 Adventist church began to take on its own unique 00:02:05.80\00:02:08.48 Teufel philosophy, when they began to show the 00:02:08.49\00:02:12.05 relationship between physical welfare and 00:02:12.06\00:02:14.61 spiritual health. Ellen White wrote, 00:02:14.62\00:02:17.70 "I saw that it was a sacred duty to attend to 00:02:17.71\00:02:20.98 our health, and arouse others to their duty. 00:02:20.99\00:02:24.10 We have a duty to speak to speak, to come out 00:02:25.05\00:02:27.44 against intemperance of every kind, 00:02:27.45\00:02:29.90 intemperance in working, in eating, in drinking, 00:02:29.91\00:02:33.50 and in drugging. And then to point them 00:02:33.51\00:02:36.37 to God's great medicine water, 00:02:36.38\00:02:38.81 pure soft water for disease, for health, 00:02:38.82\00:02:42.54 for cleanliness, and for luxury." 00:02:42.55\00:02:45.48 This council came none too soon by the time the 00:02:45.89\00:02:49.13 toil of pioneering the new movement the 00:02:49.14\00:02:52.27 Seventh-day Adventist church had began to take 00:02:52.28\00:02:55.16 its toll on the church leaders who often carried 00:02:55.17\00:02:58.05 the work of two to three people trying to advance 00:02:58.06\00:03:01.40 the kingdom of God in every way. 00:03:01.41\00:03:03.81 It was on Christmas day in 1865 that Ellen White 00:03:04.59\00:03:08.90 has given her second vision on health stressing 00:03:08.91\00:03:12.49 our need to take as of people more seriously 00:03:12.50\00:03:15.05 health reform. She said, "I was shown that we 00:03:15.06\00:03:19.22 should provide a home for the afflicted and for 00:03:19.23\00:03:22.09 those who wished how to wish to learn how to take 00:03:22.10\00:03:25.77 care of their bodies that they may prevent 00:03:25.78\00:03:28.37 sickness. The brethren heard this call and 00:03:28.38\00:03:32.27 through the church and though the church was 00:03:32.28\00:03:34.03 about 10,000 strong, church leaders in Battle 00:03:34.04\00:03:37.13 Creek began to enlist donations for their first 00:03:37.14\00:03:40.54 Adventist Health Institute. 00:03:40.55\00:03:42.38 The record shows that J.P. Kellogg, 00:03:42.97\00:03:45.38 father of the future John Harvey Kellogg pledged 00:03:45.39\00:03:48.88 the first $500. Then Ellen White also pledged 00:03:48.89\00:03:52.89 $500 and others were pledging 100s as well 00:03:52.90\00:03:56.67 until soon there was a pool of $11,000 enough to 00:03:56.68\00:04:01.01 begin the first health enterprise. 00:04:01.02\00:04:03.52 Five acres in Battle Creek were purchased which 00:04:04.06\00:04:07.98 included a good home on the property; 00:04:07.99\00:04:09.99 two adjoining acres were also purchased. 00:04:10.00\00:04:13.32 Treatment rooms were constructed by September 00:04:13.33\00:04:17.09 1866, the Battle Creek Western Health Reform 00:04:17.10\00:04:21.40 Institute opened for patients on staff were 00:04:21.41\00:04:25.75 Dr. Hareshio S Lay and Dr. Phoebe Lamson, 00:04:25.76\00:04:30.07 two bath attendance, one nurse and three 00:04:30.73\00:04:34.15 or four helpers. The opening of the 00:04:34.16\00:04:36.71 Western Health Reform Institute marked a new 00:04:36.72\00:04:39.85 era in the Seventh-day Adventist church history. 00:04:39.86\00:04:43.03 This was to be not only the forerunner of the 00:04:43.04\00:04:45.67 Battle Creek Sanitarium but of a whole system 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.69 of healthcare facilities that would be operated 00:04:48.70\00:04:51.64 around the world. Two months after the 00:04:51.65\00:04:54.62 opening of the institution Dr. Lay reported 00:04:54.63\00:04:57.36 its success was far beyond our most sanguine 00:04:57.37\00:05:00.79 expectations. The patients had been received 00:05:00.80\00:05:04.58 from Canada, Redmond, Rhode Island, New York, 00:05:04.59\00:05:07.24 Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin 00:05:07.25\00:05:11.09 and Iowa. It became necessary to secure rooms 00:05:11.10\00:05:14.29 in nearby homes for those who were able to 00:05:14.30\00:05:17.94 walk a short distance leaving the room in the 00:05:17.95\00:05:20.61 main building for the accommodations of the most 00:05:20.62\00:05:23.89 feeble ones. By 1877 a second much larger 00:05:23.90\00:05:29.12 building was erected and the Institution was 00:05:29.13\00:05:31.63 renamed The Medical and Surgical Sanitarium 00:05:31.64\00:05:34.30 later commonly called the Battle Creek 00:05:34.31\00:05:37.00 Sanitarium. During the next 20 continued growth 00:05:37.01\00:05:41.10 and patronage led to major expansion. 00:05:41.11\00:05:44.01 In 1887 for instance a separate five storey 00:05:44.02\00:05:47.72 hospital structure was erected. 00:05:47.73\00:05:49.67 In 1890 another five storey extension was 00:05:49.68\00:05:52.66 added to the main building and the original 00:05:52.67\00:05:55.16 structure was raised one storey. 00:05:55.17\00:05:57.39 By the turn of the century the Sanitarium 00:05:57.40\00:06:00.19 was world famous and employed more than 900 00:06:00.20\00:06:03.82 workers. Amen. But this was not all good, 00:06:03.83\00:06:07.82 church leaders along with Ellen White had 00:06:09.07\00:06:11.42 repeatedly counseled not to concentrate so many 00:06:11.43\00:06:15.39 resources and finances and people in one place. 00:06:15.40\00:06:18.86 Smaller centers were to be established near many 00:06:18.87\00:06:22.81 cities throughout the United States. 00:06:22.82\00:06:25.33 It was only a few years later when on February 00:06:25.71\00:06:28.93 18, 1902 that a fire broke out in the main 00:06:28.94\00:06:32.81 building of the Sanitarium and within three hours 00:06:32.82\00:06:36.50 the principle structures were gone. 00:06:36.51\00:06:39.32 All the approximately 400 patients were safely 00:06:39.33\00:06:45.82 cleared from the building. As Ellen White 00:06:45.83\00:06:48.31 pondered the first news of the fire she wrote, 00:06:48.32\00:06:50.91 "Our heavenly Father does not willingly afflict 00:06:51.46\00:06:54.60 or grieve the children of men. 00:06:54.61\00:06:56.76 He has his purpose in the whirlwind and 00:06:56.77\00:06:59.36 in the storm, in the fire and in the flood. 00:06:59.37\00:07:02.72 The Lord permits calamities to come to 00:07:02.73\00:07:05.43 His people to save them from the greater dangers. 00:07:05.44\00:07:09.24 This was the turning point for the Adventists 00:07:09.25\00:07:12.40 that have been centered largely in Battle Creek 00:07:12.41\00:07:14.68 and soon the Review and Herald Publishing 00:07:14.69\00:07:17.19 Association and the General Conference of 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.92 Seventh-day Adventist moved to 00:07:19.93\00:07:21.75 Washington DC area. And efforts were made 00:07:21.76\00:07:25.92 to establish Health Institutions in 00:07:25.93\00:07:27.90 Southern California as well. 00:07:27.91\00:07:30.00 Already the Rural Health Retreat had opened 00:07:30.64\00:07:32.73 in 1878 in Northern California later 00:07:32.74\00:07:36.69 renamed as St. Helena Sanitarium but many more 00:07:36.70\00:07:40.60 health facilities were needed. 00:07:40.61\00:07:42.72 About this time Mrs. White was in Los Angles 00:07:43.29\00:07:46.04 area for a camp meeting when she heard about 00:07:46.05\00:07:48.84 a 20 acre property near Santiago, California. 00:07:48.85\00:07:52.28 It had a three storey building that had been 00:07:52.84\00:07:54.82 recently build as a sanitarium and the 00:07:54.83\00:07:57.39 grounds were absolutely beautiful. 00:07:57.40\00:07:59.49 The property was strangely unoccupied and for 00:07:59.97\00:08:02.73 sale for a fraction of its original price. 00:08:02.74\00:08:05.88 The cost of the building alone had been $25,000 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.82 and now it's being offered building and property 00:08:09.83\00:08:13.07 for $12,000, but still it was more than 00:08:13.08\00:08:16.89 the Adventist could afford. 00:08:16.90\00:08:18.53 Eighteen months go by and the price was lowered 00:08:19.20\00:08:22.85 until in 1904 it was offered for a mere 00:08:22.86\00:08:26.66 $4000, complicating the decision to go to 00:08:26.67\00:08:30.38 purchase this property was a prolong drought 00:08:30.39\00:08:33.13 in the area. But Ellen White was impressed by 00:08:33.14\00:08:36.40 the Lord to move forward and found the way to 00:08:36.41\00:08:38.92 come with the funds. Soon with the blessing of 00:08:38.93\00:08:42.04 God an abundance of clear pure water was found 00:08:42.05\00:08:45.45 on the property and the facility was named the 00:08:45.46\00:08:48.83 Paradise Valley Sanitarium and it was soon full 00:08:48.84\00:08:52.88 to capacity. That same year another property 00:08:52.89\00:08:56.38 was found closer to the Los Angeles that also had 00:08:56.39\00:09:01.73 a well kept three storey building known as 00:09:01.74\00:09:05.35 Glendale Hotel worth $50,000. 00:09:05.36\00:09:08.94 When the price eventually came down to $12,000 00:09:08.95\00:09:13.33 the Adventists made the down payment and with 00:09:13.34\00:09:16.55 the blessing of God's funds came in, 00:09:16.56\00:09:19.16 and within months the institution was furnished 00:09:19.17\00:09:22.46 and ready to operate as Glendale Sanitarium. 00:09:22.47\00:09:26.47 These several institutions were quite a step in 00:09:27.26\00:09:31.01 faith for the Southern California Conference of 00:09:31.02\00:09:33.52 the Seventh-day Adventist with only 1100 members 00:09:33.53\00:09:38.19 strong but God was already leading for an 00:09:38.20\00:09:42.68 even broader medical work. Back in 1900 00:09:42.69\00:09:46.87 Ellen White had been shown a property already 00:09:47.37\00:09:49.92 build with a beautiful sanitarium and other 00:09:49.93\00:09:52.97 buildings and with many fruit trees. 00:09:52.98\00:09:55.41 In 1903 a property was found in the Redlands 00:09:56.15\00:09:59.00 Riverside California area that matched the 00:09:59.01\00:10:02.06 description perfectly but the price 110,000, 00:10:02.07\00:10:06.67 it was prohibitive. But by May of 1905 00:10:06.68\00:10:10.53 when the price dropped dramatically to only 00:10:10.54\00:10:13.29 $40,000 a decision was made to move forward 00:10:13.30\00:10:17.21 in faith, and the property was purchased with the 00:10:17.22\00:10:20.02 $5000 down payment and soon the balance was 00:10:20.03\00:10:23.97 paid in full. The property continues 00:10:23.98\00:10:27.40 today as Loma Linda University with a major 00:10:27.41\00:10:31.01 regional hospital, medical dental, 00:10:31.02\00:10:33.65 and nursing schools, and the school of public 00:10:33.66\00:10:36.20 health and many more. While the work was 00:10:36.21\00:10:39.72 expanding in the early 1900s largely to the west, 00:10:39.73\00:10:44.33 there were repeated calls for workers who would 00:10:44.34\00:10:47.55 go the south and take up the work of the Gospel. 00:10:47.56\00:10:51.81 Ellen White counseled, medical missions must be 00:10:51.82\00:10:55.94 opened as pioneer agencies to prepare 00:10:55.95\00:10:58.69 the way for the proclamation of the 00:10:58.70\00:11:01.08 Third Angel's message to the cities in the south. 00:11:01.09\00:11:03.98 The call was answered by two men 00:11:05.78\00:11:07.53 professors Edward A Sutherland and Percy Magan 00:11:07.54\00:11:10.97 who had been leading out in the churches 00:11:10.98\00:11:13.02 educational work first at Battle Creek and then 00:11:13.03\00:11:16.02 later at Berrien Springs, Michigan. 00:11:16.03\00:11:18.35 Ellen White was by this time visiting her son 00:11:19.00\00:11:22.32 near Nashville Tennessee, her son Edson near 00:11:22.33\00:11:25.61 Nashville, Tennessee where he operated a 00:11:25.62\00:11:27.92 missionary steamer boat on Cumberland River. 00:11:27.93\00:11:30.46 He and his wife were seeking to start education 00:11:30.99\00:11:33.50 work among the Negro or colored people. 00:11:33.51\00:11:35.82 Edson was just ready to leave on a trip up the 00:11:36.37\00:11:38.81 river when Ellen White proposed that they all 00:11:38.82\00:11:41.82 travel together and invite Sutherland and Magan 00:11:41.83\00:11:44.95 to look for property with her for another school 00:11:44.96\00:11:48.03 that they would run. The first day there, 00:11:48.04\00:11:51.47 there was a break down in the boat's machinery, 00:11:51.48\00:11:54.52 and they tied up for repair at Edgefield 00:11:54.53\00:11:57.72 Junction Landing, some 12 miles in direct line 00:11:57.73\00:12:01.30 from Nashville. One of the men working with Edson 00:12:01.31\00:12:04.43 who knew the area took Mrs. White up on the 00:12:04.44\00:12:07.47 bank of the river and pointed out to her an 00:12:07.48\00:12:10.06 adjoining 400 acre plantation which 00:12:10.07\00:12:12.66 was for sale. The bottom land near the river was 00:12:12.67\00:12:15.84 good soil but the upper part were poor and 00:12:15.85\00:12:20.59 had lots of bare limestone. 00:12:20.60\00:12:23.81 Ellen White was impressed, she recommends 00:12:23.82\00:12:26.83 Sutherland and Magan to see the land, 00:12:26.84\00:12:28.94 but they did not see anything but that was so 00:12:28.95\00:12:32.56 impressive. By this time The Morning Star boat 00:12:32.57\00:12:35.97 was repaired and they all headed up river for 00:12:35.98\00:12:38.80 the next several days. During this time 00:12:38.81\00:12:41.50 Ellen White became sure that this was the 00:12:41.51\00:12:43.80 property the Lord would have them to start their 00:12:43.81\00:12:46.10 new school. The men struggled over this 00:12:46.11\00:12:49.25 recommendation but in the end decided that since 00:12:49.26\00:12:52.15 the Lord had so often used Ellen White in 00:12:52.16\00:12:54.95 directing the work of the church that they should 00:12:54.96\00:12:57.51 trust her this time also, but where to get the 00:12:57.52\00:13:00.61 funds? $13,000 was a lot of money and 00:13:00.62\00:13:04.62 $5000 of that would be do in just 10 days. 00:13:04.63\00:13:07.86 Ellen White offered to help in every way she 00:13:08.39\00:13:11.26 could, she said, "our people will help you, 00:13:11.27\00:13:13.89 I'll recommend your work, I'll write an article 00:13:13.90\00:13:16.50 about it in the church paper, 00:13:16.51\00:13:17.97 I'll come on your board if you wish. 00:13:18.42\00:13:21.36 Do you know that this is the only time in her 00:13:21.87\00:13:23.97 life that she agreed to be a member of the board 00:13:23.98\00:13:26.81 of trustees of any institution and 00:13:26.82\00:13:29.48 which she did, and she served 00:13:29.49\00:13:31.23 faithfully until the very near end of her life. 00:13:31.24\00:13:33.83 So the Madison school and farm was legally 00:13:34.69\00:13:37.96 organized in a special way. 00:13:37.97\00:13:40.73 It would be a church owned and operated school 00:13:41.28\00:13:44.94 but would formally operated nonprofit 00:13:44.95\00:13:47.82 foundation like the Biblical model of Paul, 00:13:47.83\00:13:51.99 the self supporting tent making, 00:13:52.00\00:13:53.72 tent maker evangelist. This school would be a 00:13:53.73\00:13:57.13 self supporting school but would have close 00:13:57.14\00:14:00.86 cooperative ties to the Seventh-day Adventist 00:14:00.87\00:14:03.37 church. God proposed this tuition free school 00:14:03.38\00:14:07.92 from the very beginning. Half the day was devoted 00:14:07.93\00:14:12.07 to the study, and half to work. 00:14:12.08\00:14:14.06 The institute was named Nashville Agricultural 00:14:14.44\00:14:18.15 and Normal Institute and later the Madison 00:14:18.16\00:14:21.14 college. As the school grew a few old buildings 00:14:21.15\00:14:26.21 both house, both workers and students but they 00:14:26.22\00:14:29.15 were bursting at the scenes. 00:14:29.16\00:14:30.75 Percy team again in 1908 just four years after 00:14:31.28\00:14:34.49 their modest founding was able to report great 00:14:34.50\00:14:37.50 progress in the building, he said this. 00:14:37.51\00:14:39.88 We have erected eight cottages which will 00:14:40.36\00:14:43.04 accommodate about 36 students. 00:14:43.05\00:14:45.60 Besides these we put up a small bathroom and a 00:14:45.61\00:14:48.83 laundry and three other buildings which are used 00:14:48.84\00:14:51.49 for the bakery and dairy purposes. 00:14:51.50\00:14:53.69 In 1907 we began erecting three buildings for a 00:14:54.17\00:14:57.48 real sanitarium making a total of 19 buildings 00:14:57.49\00:15:01.25 that are erected or in the process of erection. 00:15:01.26\00:15:03.81 Actually as early as the fall of 1904 at the 00:15:04.59\00:15:08.66 very time that the Madison was being born 00:15:08.67\00:15:11.08 Mrs. White was writing letters encouraging that 00:15:11.09\00:15:14.45 the sanitarium be built in conjunction with the 00:15:14.46\00:15:17.64 school. I have been instructed that there are 00:15:17.65\00:15:22.86 decided advantages to be gained by the 00:15:22.87\00:15:25.46 establishment of a school and a sanitarium 00:15:25.47\00:15:27.94 in close proximity, that they may be 00:15:27.95\00:15:31.44 a help one to the other. God bless the sanitarium 00:15:31.45\00:15:35.96 work at Madison from the very beginning. 00:15:35.97\00:15:38.25 Percy Magan's wife had died several years earlier 00:15:39.22\00:15:42.95 and when he remarried, he married 00:15:42.96\00:15:44.94 Dr. Lillian Eshleman who became the first 00:15:44.95\00:15:47.65 physician for the new health enterprise. 00:15:47.66\00:15:50.08 From the humble beginning in 1907 the sanitarium 00:15:50.65\00:15:53.42 were kept expanding, new additions were regularly 00:15:53.43\00:15:56.74 being added. Many of the patients came from 00:15:56.75\00:15:59.46 nearby Nashville, but as the sanitarium's 00:15:59.47\00:16:02.26 reputation of excellence grew patients came from 00:16:02.27\00:16:06.26 all over the country. The sanitarium nurses 00:16:06.27\00:16:09.83 training program was at first a one year course 00:16:09.84\00:16:12.84 uncertified, but with the Lord's blessing year 00:16:12.85\00:16:15.99 by year the nursing classes grew. 00:16:16.00\00:16:18.05 By 1915 the nursing course was extended to 00:16:18.65\00:16:21.82 two years, in 1919 expanded to three years 00:16:21.83\00:16:25.16 training and their graduates became 00:16:25.17\00:16:27.18 full fledged recognized professional nurses. 00:16:27.19\00:16:30.33 The sanitarium specialize in treating its many 00:16:30.34\00:16:33.82 patients with, not with drugs but with the simple 00:16:33.83\00:16:36.91 natural remedies and lifestyle change. 00:16:36.92\00:16:40.15 The results were wonderful, 00:16:40.16\00:16:41.71 patients found a new lease on life. 00:16:41.72\00:16:44.53 Students were taught how to give the various 00:16:44.97\00:16:47.39 treatments. Here one staff member is giving 00:16:47.40\00:16:50.11 a whirlpool treatment. Instructors often work 00:16:50.12\00:16:54.01 closely with their students making sure the 00:16:54.02\00:16:56.89 patients received the very best treatments. 00:16:56.90\00:16:59.66 Here the patient is receiving a steam bath. 00:16:59.67\00:17:02.94 The Madison school and sanitarium developed many 00:17:03.71\00:17:06.23 auxiliary services, dental offices were a part 00:17:06.24\00:17:09.61 of the campus eventually with the additional 00:17:09.62\00:17:12.07 hospital, and maternity services were also 00:17:12.08\00:17:14.87 offered. Part of the treatment was to spend 00:17:14.88\00:17:18.34 sometime outdoors in the fresh sunshine everyday. 00:17:18.35\00:17:22.42 Madison developed overtime 27 different 00:17:23.04\00:17:26.30 industries to help enable students to work and 00:17:26.31\00:17:28.67 pay their tuition. This included a health 00:17:28.68\00:17:31.31 food factory and a bakery which supplied good 00:17:31.32\00:17:34.10 quality bread and bakery products for their 00:17:34.11\00:17:36.69 campus and community. In 1909 the campus hosted 00:17:36.70\00:17:41.03 its first self supporting convention. 00:17:41.04\00:17:43.56 By this time one family started the medical 00:17:44.11\00:17:46.69 missionary work in Cuba and other satellites were 00:17:46.70\00:17:49.99 beginning to be started in numerous places now 00:17:50.00\00:17:52.78 throughout the south. 00:17:52.79\00:17:54.12 Go ahead, okay. By 1909 the medical work at the 00:17:59.95\00:18:04.21 school had grown to such significance and needed 00:18:04.22\00:18:07.93 strong stable leadership, it was recommended that 00:18:07.94\00:18:11.51 both Sutherland and Magan take medical school 00:18:11.52\00:18:14.20 training nearby at Nashville. 00:18:14.21\00:18:16.41 They began their studies in 1910 at Vanderbilt 00:18:16.42\00:18:20.25 and the University of Tennessee, 00:18:20.26\00:18:22.24 but also continued to run the Madison campus 00:18:22.25\00:18:25.75 graduating in 1914. Sutherland was 50 when 00:18:25.76\00:18:30.33 he obtained his MD degree. Perhaps to summarize 00:18:30.34\00:18:35.78 this self supporting pioneering effort on the 00:18:35.79\00:18:38.69 Madison campus with its health work, 00:18:38.70\00:18:41.35 we can quote from the Reader's Digest article 00:18:41.36\00:18:45.12 of May 1938 which incidentally resulted 00:18:45.13\00:18:49.98 in 5000 enquiries. Today the Madison Rural 00:18:49.99\00:18:54.76 Sanitarium, with 100 rooms up-to-the minute 00:18:54.77\00:18:57.48 equipment, and a staff of 14 physicians, 00:18:57.49\00:19:00.80 is the institute's most important industry. 00:19:00.81\00:19:04.00 Although it is operated for the benefit of the 00:19:04.49\00:19:06.98 college, as rates of $25 to $35 a week, 00:19:06.99\00:19:11.84 the sanitarium has never turned away a charity 00:19:11.85\00:19:14.74 patient. Students do all the routine work, 00:19:14.75\00:19:19.11 getting practical training in the process of 00:19:19.12\00:19:21.60 earning their education. The 25 to 30 graduates 00:19:21.61\00:19:25.71 of its nurses' course are snapped up each year by 00:19:25.72\00:19:31.09 the best hospitals, and the premedical and 00:19:31.10\00:19:35.37 pre-dental work is accepted by all the 00:19:35.38\00:19:39.20 colleges and The American Medical Association. 00:19:39.21\00:19:44.17 Through the years Madison did a wonderful job 00:19:44.18\00:19:47.24 of training medical missionary workers, 00:19:47.25\00:19:49.29 encouraging them and enabling it's graduates to 00:19:49.30\00:19:52.04 leave and go out and start similar institutions 00:19:52.05\00:19:55.30 throughout the south. And now here just the 00:19:55.31\00:19:58.11 few of the examples, on a farm up in the hills 00:19:58.12\00:20:02.33 the surround Nashville Basin, several Madison 00:20:02.34\00:20:05.45 graduates started one of the hill schools which 00:20:05.46\00:20:08.48 was called Fountain Head. Their program was well 00:20:08.49\00:20:11.46 described by a mountain man who said it this way. 00:20:11.47\00:20:14.61 They help the poor, they help the sick and 00:20:14.62\00:20:17.68 they learned our children. Not all the early 00:20:17.69\00:20:22.15 ventures of Madison were rural. 00:20:22.16\00:20:24.04 In 1919 a Polk Street settlement and a 00:20:24.05\00:20:28.63 cafeteria, and a treatment room in Nashville were 00:20:28.64\00:20:31.15 operated by Madison graduates. 00:20:31.16\00:20:33.47 The Polk Street settlement was a day nursery 00:20:33.48\00:20:36.85 where the worker's mothers could leave their 00:20:36.86\00:20:38.70 children in a place from which the nurses went 00:20:38.71\00:20:42.95 out into the homes. The couple pictured on 00:20:42.96\00:20:46.69 the left are Neil Martin and his wife, parents of 00:20:46.70\00:20:50.13 Edwin Martin who will be interviewed here in a 00:20:50.14\00:20:53.69 few minutes. Located near Portland, 00:20:53.70\00:20:56.20 Tennessee was where another hill school 00:20:56.21\00:20:59.12 started called Chestnut Hill Farm School. 00:20:59.13\00:21:01.88 To this house upon the hill came those in the 00:21:02.47\00:21:05.24 community who needed medical help. 00:21:05.25\00:21:07.12 And to the little school house that had 00:21:07.13\00:21:09.12 been added came whole families who felt the need 00:21:09.13\00:21:12.00 of an education. The idea of a medical 00:21:12.01\00:21:15.06 and educational work for North Carolina was 00:21:15.07\00:21:17.29 conceived early in 1910 not far away from 00:21:17.30\00:21:21.18 Asheville, a property was found in the beautiful 00:21:21.19\00:21:24.08 valley surrounded by hills and it was originally 00:21:24.09\00:21:26.91 called the Naples Agricultural and 00:21:26.92\00:21:29.33 Normal School. A few years later a medical 00:21:29.34\00:21:32.45 work was started under the simple name 00:21:32.46\00:21:34.40 Mountain Sanitarium. Today, Fletcher Academy 00:21:34.41\00:21:38.74 continues as a self supporting school with 00:21:38.75\00:21:41.23 anticipated enrollment for next year of a 150 00:21:41.24\00:21:44.18 students and the hospital is run by Adventists 00:21:44.19\00:21:47.07 Health Systems. Pisgah Institute was 00:21:47.08\00:21:50.57 also located in Western North Carolina, 00:21:50.58\00:21:53.38 nine miles from the city of Asheville where 00:21:53.39\00:21:56.78 school was established in 1914 and the sanitarium 00:21:56.79\00:22:00.54 was later started. This institution has trained 00:22:00.55\00:22:04.02 hundreds of young people who have gone forth 00:22:04.03\00:22:06.80 to serve their church at home and in foreign 00:22:06.81\00:22:09.30 lands. Today Mount Pisgah Academy is owned 00:22:09.31\00:22:12.38 and operated by the Carolina Conference and 00:22:12.39\00:22:15.55 has an enrollment of a 142 students. 00:22:15.56\00:22:18.59 Near Florence, Alabama, the Lord blessed with the 00:22:19.80\00:22:23.79 founding of El Reposo Sanitarium by Madison 00:22:23.80\00:22:28.55 graduate Neil Martin, his wife and several 00:22:28.56\00:22:32.11 others. Years later, two of the Martin boys, 00:22:32.12\00:22:36.08 Charles and Edwin former Fletcher students along 00:22:36.09\00:22:39.55 with their wives took over the management 00:22:39.56\00:22:42.49 of El Reposo. The Hulbert Farm 00:22:42.50\00:22:46.45 and Scott's Sanitarium in Reeves, 00:22:46.46\00:22:49.34 Georgia began its operation in 1914, 00:22:49.35\00:22:53.80 medical, educational and agricultural activities 00:22:54.48\00:22:57.47 were carried out under the name of Rural Health 00:22:57.48\00:23:00.64 Educational Institute which also sponsored to 00:23:00.65\00:23:04.31 cafeteria and treatment rooms in Chattanooga, 00:23:04.32\00:23:07.72 Tennessee. Anyone who drives the 17 miles from 00:23:07.73\00:23:12.17 Louisville, Kentucky to the Pewee Valley 00:23:12.18\00:23:14.23 Sanitarium and hospital will enjoy the fragrance 00:23:14.24\00:23:17.31 of honeysuckle and magnolia, and the rolling 00:23:17.32\00:23:20.01 infields of blue grass. The work at Pewee Valley 00:23:20.02\00:23:23.04 was started by a group of nurses from Louisville. 00:23:23.05\00:23:25.37 The property was purchased in 1924, 00:23:25.88\00:23:28.42 starting in a log building it grew and in time to 00:23:28.43\00:23:31.17 become a school and a sanitarium, 00:23:31.18\00:23:33.44 many Madison's students have been connected with 00:23:33.45\00:23:35.75 the Pewee Valley work. The Lawrenceburg 00:23:35.76\00:23:38.87 Sanitarium and Hospital was located 6 miles from 00:23:38.88\00:23:41.47 Lawrenceburg, Tennessee and came into 00:23:41.48\00:23:43.73 existence in 1919. Its objectives were medical, 00:23:43.74\00:23:48.08 education, agricultural work on the original 00:23:48.09\00:23:51.70 42 acre farm. Other farms were added then 00:23:51.71\00:23:55.84 a larger sanitarium was built operating under the 00:23:55.85\00:23:58.55 name of the Lawrenceburg Rural School and Health 00:23:58.56\00:24:01.22 Retreat. This institution is unique and that for 00:24:01.23\00:24:04.88 many years it was operated by Madison and served 00:24:04.89\00:24:08.33 as a training center for rural school and rest 00:24:08.34\00:24:11.36 home work. There were actually many other self 00:24:11.37\00:24:15.56 supporting medical institution schools, 00:24:15.57\00:24:17.92 vegetarian cafeterias throughout the south. 00:24:17.93\00:24:20.71 Time doesn't allow covering them all but one 00:24:21.17\00:24:24.56 more project will be of interest to our ASI 00:24:24.57\00:24:28.86 attendees here in Louisville. 00:24:28.87\00:24:31.37 That's right Janet and here are the two photos 00:24:31.38\00:24:33.27 of, one of the vegetarian cafeterias once 00:24:33.28\00:24:35.94 operating right here in Louisville. 00:24:35.95\00:24:38.13 Pictured on the outside is the cafeteria and 00:24:38.14\00:24:41.36 this other picture is the inside photo showing 00:24:41.37\00:24:44.03 a large spaces dining room area. 00:24:44.04\00:24:46.75 By the 1940s Madison had been responsible for 00:24:46.76\00:24:50.60 raising up over a 50 or more self supporting 00:24:50.61\00:24:53.61 institutions. Eventually the church felt a need 00:24:53.62\00:24:57.23 to get more closely associated with these many 00:24:57.24\00:24:59.44 facilities and to assist in any way that it 00:24:59.45\00:25:02.22 could. It may come as a no surprise with the 00:25:02.23\00:25:05.20 church in 1948, in 1946 reached out to the 00:25:05.21\00:25:09.24 president of the Madison College Dr. Sutherland 00:25:09.25\00:25:12.32 who had served Madison for 42 years. 00:25:12.33\00:25:15.47 They invited him to move to the church head 00:25:15.94\00:25:18.95 quarters in Washington DC and become the head 00:25:18.96\00:25:22.05 of a newly organized commission on rural living 00:25:22.06\00:25:24.68 that will foster rural living and self 00:25:24.69\00:25:26.80 supporting missionary work in North America. 00:25:26.81\00:25:29.84 Soon it was known as the association of the 00:25:30.33\00:25:33.19 Seventh-day Adventist self supporting 00:25:33.20\00:25:34.92 institutions or as we now know the initials 00:25:34.93\00:25:37.92 simply ASI. Self supporting work has 00:25:37.93\00:25:41.92 grown beyond any one's dream, 00:25:41.93\00:25:45.25 and was having a significant impact on the 00:25:45.26\00:25:47.97 communities. They were located in and near as 00:25:47.98\00:25:51.73 well as on the Seventh -day Adventist church. 00:25:51.74\00:25:54.01 Now Dr. Sutherland would have the opportunity 00:25:54.42\00:25:58.57 to find ways through the newly formed ASI 00:25:58.58\00:26:02.18 organizations to keep these institutions united 00:26:02.19\00:26:05.37 and focus on the great commission of Jesus 00:26:05.38\00:26:09.16 to teach, preach and hear all over the world, 00:26:09.17\00:26:13.96 heal all over the world. With the Lord's blessing 00:26:13.97\00:26:16.96 the ASI organization did grow larger through the 00:26:16.97\00:26:20.55 years. And in 1961 broaden its membership base to 00:26:20.56\00:26:24.74 include Adventist businessmen and women. 00:26:24.75\00:26:27.09 The goal remains the same emphasizing the 00:26:28.34\00:26:30.74 importance of Christian witness in the workplace. 00:26:30.75\00:26:33.75 To provide a place, a fellowship for lay persons 00:26:33.76\00:26:37.03 with like goals and enhance the Christian 00:26:37.04\00:26:40.26 principles of business. It seems that the 00:26:40.27\00:26:43.53 Lord has abundantly blessed this organization, 00:26:43.54\00:26:46.86 and it just keeps on growing not only larger 00:26:46.87\00:26:49.92 but more effective in its outreach activities 00:26:49.93\00:26:52.86 around the world. By 1917 and again 00:26:52.87\00:26:56.48 in 1979 some name adjustments were made to 00:26:56.49\00:27:00.05 fit the growing army who were sharing Christ in 00:27:00.06\00:27:02.56 the workplace, and it was still ASI but now it 00:27:02.57\00:27:06.58 was called Adventist- laymen's Services and 00:27:06.59\00:27:09.78 Industries, a perfect fit for a great 00:27:09.79\00:27:12.94 organization. It's being a blessing to review 00:27:12.95\00:27:17.55 this amazing history of self supporting medical 00:27:17.56\00:27:21.33 missionary work. And it's a great pleasure for me 00:27:21.34\00:27:24.57 to also be able to invite two men whose lifework 00:27:24.58\00:27:28.75 is a great tie to us to the past and even the 00:27:28.76\00:27:31.83 present. I have with me today Brother 00:27:31.84\00:27:34.48 Bob Sutherland who is going to spend just a few 00:27:34.49\00:27:37.46 moments with us on our history of self supporting 00:27:37.47\00:27:41.74 medical missionary work. Brother Sutherland 00:27:41.75\00:27:44.63 your grandfather E. A. Sutherland pioneered 00:27:44.64\00:27:48.64 the Madison College along with Percy Magan and 00:27:48.65\00:27:51.73 several others of course. And your parents also 00:27:51.74\00:27:56.04 were involved, in fact I guess they met 00:27:56.05\00:27:57.96 each other at Madison. Yes they did. 00:27:57.97\00:28:01.92 And then your father became a physician like 00:28:02.74\00:28:05.47 grandfather. Yes. And he served at Madison. 00:28:05.48\00:28:09.30 Yes, he did. And then you came along and you 00:28:09.31\00:28:12.74 were raised at Madison and you started, 00:28:12.75\00:28:14.86 you met your wife at Madison. 00:28:14.87\00:28:16.44 Absolutely 62 years ago. Isn't that a blessing 00:28:16.45\00:28:20.46 folks, can we all say, amen. 00:28:20.47\00:28:21.75 So that's a wonderful history and these 00:28:23.15\00:28:25.98 institutions are very good for providing just 00:28:25.99\00:28:28.31 the right wives, aren't they? Oh yeah. Amen. 00:28:28.32\00:28:30.97 And so after you had raised your family there, 00:28:31.69\00:28:36.87 so you really saw Madison in its 00:28:36.88\00:28:39.35 heydays in so many different ways, 00:28:39.36\00:28:41.15 didn't you? Yes, I did. Now you were there at 00:28:41.16\00:28:45.17 the time probably in your twenties when that 00:28:45.18\00:28:47.74 article came out in the Reader's Digest in 1938. 00:28:47.75\00:28:51.95 I wouldn't be in my twenties but I was around. 00:28:52.59\00:28:54.83 Okay, you were around. And what was that like 00:28:54.84\00:28:58.76 when that article came out? 00:28:58.77\00:29:00.19 What happened to Paul Edison? 00:29:00.20\00:29:01.75 We didn't have a room to put him. 00:29:01.76\00:29:03.33 You didn't I mean 5000 people asking that was 00:29:03.34\00:29:06.81 phenomenal, wasn't it? Yes, it was. 00:29:06.82\00:29:08.81 But it was a real testimony to see how 00:29:08.82\00:29:11.54 the world was even responding to, 00:29:11.55\00:29:14.11 to be able to respect such a simple but a 00:29:14.12\00:29:19.61 prosperous self supporting school. 00:29:19.62\00:29:21.49 I have a question for you because you did see 00:29:22.58\00:29:25.20 the different industries there and so forth. 00:29:25.21\00:29:27.85 The theme that drew many people from the West 00:29:27.86\00:29:30.95 or the East of the United States was that you 00:29:30.96\00:29:33.20 could go to the Madison and earn your way 00:29:33.21\00:29:35.30 through to wish a Roman board, 00:29:35.31\00:29:37.01 how did that really worked? It worked fine, 00:29:37.02\00:29:40.33 people came there with no money at all, 00:29:40.34\00:29:42.28 got a four year education and went away with 00:29:42.29\00:29:44.85 money in their pocket and a career. 00:29:44.86\00:29:47.53 And what was it like? What was the daily 00:29:48.35\00:29:50.41 schedule life for them? Well started early in the 00:29:50.42\00:29:54.03 morning if you are milking cows and late in the 00:29:54.04\00:29:57.23 evening after you got off work. 00:29:57.24\00:30:00.05 And they have some time to study too? 00:30:00.06\00:30:02.15 Oh yes. So about half and half. 00:30:02.16\00:30:04.53 That's the way the program is supposed to work 00:30:05.03\00:30:06.89 as. That's a pretty balanced program, 00:30:06.90\00:30:08.58 wasn't it? Now as the institution we know was 00:30:08.59\00:30:14.26 self supporting, they had up to 27 different 00:30:14.27\00:30:16.98 industries. Yes. But as the work spread as the 00:30:16.99\00:30:20.27 vision was to go out and do likewise, 00:30:20.28\00:30:22.68 that costs money and that I know that the 00:30:23.32\00:30:25.27 campus couldn't earn, how did God give us 00:30:25.28\00:30:27.79 an example? How did God provide for some of those 00:30:27.80\00:30:30.05 multiple new projects? Well, for lot of people 00:30:30.06\00:30:33.68 Mrs. Scott came there from up in the Northeast, 00:30:33.69\00:30:39.68 made her life at Madison she was a daughter of 00:30:40.52\00:30:44.45 Mr. Funk who established Funk and Wagnall's 00:30:44.46\00:30:47.07 publishing company. She made her life there and 00:30:47.08\00:30:50.33 could spend her inheritance helping 00:30:50.34\00:30:53.07 Madison and sustaining it by building buildings 00:30:53.08\00:30:57.83 and also by buying properties to hold for our 00:30:57.84\00:31:01.21 institutions, did wanted to start in future. 00:31:01.22\00:31:03.82 And that was one of God's way of helping many of 00:31:05.48\00:31:08.23 them to get jump start. And then somebody wanted 00:31:08.24\00:31:10.78 to go out and start, and Madison might give him 00:31:10.79\00:31:12.64 a cow or a piece of equipment to help him get 00:31:12.65\00:31:15.06 started. Any thing they could do to encourage 00:31:15.07\00:31:17.53 them and get them off to a good beginning. 00:31:17.54\00:31:20.16 They were always part of the family. Amen. 00:31:20.17\00:31:23.30 Thank you brother Sutherland today, 00:31:23.74\00:31:25.04 he still serves the Madison Alumni Board 00:31:25.05\00:31:28.53 and the curator of the Heritage Housing. 00:31:28.54\00:31:31.16 We appreciate what you and all your family did to 00:31:31.17\00:31:34.20 give us such a beautiful heritage and self 00:31:34.21\00:31:36.44 supporting work. Well just a matter of 00:31:36.45\00:31:39.20 being willing to do what the Lord asks. Amen, 00:31:39.21\00:31:41.84 thank you so much brother Sutherland. 00:31:41.85\00:31:43.47 Brother Edwin Martin, Nashville, Tennessee, 00:31:48.57\00:31:51.13 we have known you for the number of years 00:31:51.14\00:31:53.16 and I have worked with you together on 00:31:53.17\00:31:54.53 different projects. Your father went to Madison, 00:31:54.54\00:31:57.75 he met his wife there. Your evangelist 00:31:57.76\00:32:01.24 grandfather came there from California to join 00:32:01.25\00:32:03.73 self supporting medical machinery work at 00:32:03.74\00:32:06.21 Madison. You attended Madison part of the 00:32:06.22\00:32:09.21 time had some army in between and you met your 00:32:09.22\00:32:12.01 Mary Bell at Madison. I did. And she took 00:32:12.02\00:32:15.70 nurse's training there, didn't she? 00:32:15.71\00:32:17.12 And she said I will. And she said I will. 00:32:17.13\00:32:19.85 And you became a lab technician as I remember, 00:32:20.98\00:32:24.19 and like your grandfather, and like your father, 00:32:25.52\00:32:28.55 the time came that you and Mary Bell felt the 00:32:28.56\00:32:31.60 call to do likewise and you devoted much of 00:32:31.61\00:32:34.66 your life to self supporting ministries. 00:32:34.67\00:32:36.30 Well, I have to say it took my wife a little 00:32:37.55\00:32:39.27 longer to get the call than it did me, 00:32:39.28\00:32:41.24 but she eventually came across. 00:32:41.88\00:32:43.66 Okay I see you are down there Mary Bell. 00:32:43.67\00:32:45.98 And well that's what it takes us while the Lord 00:32:45.99\00:32:48.91 puts us together sort of balance one and another 00:32:48.92\00:32:51.62 and maybe sometimes we need those breaks as well 00:32:51.63\00:32:54.76 as we think about it carefully. 00:32:54.77\00:32:56.21 So with you and your wife, your brother and his 00:32:56.69\00:32:59.91 wife, and your father and family you started 00:32:59.92\00:33:03.21 El Reposo in Florence, Alabama, 00:33:03.22\00:33:06.33 and you worked there many years. 00:33:06.34\00:33:08.15 When you left Charles continued there the rest 00:33:08.16\00:33:10.59 of his life. Right, right. You went on with 00:33:10.60\00:33:13.49 Mary Bell over to Lawrenceburg to run the 00:33:13.50\00:33:16.20 Lawrenceburg Sanitarium and Hospital in 00:33:16.21\00:33:18.95 Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and that was pretty 00:33:18.96\00:33:21.46 serious business, wasn't it? 00:33:21.47\00:33:22.84 Yes, you just saw the picture of Lawrenceburg 00:33:22.85\00:33:25.45 too that's the way it looked when we were there. 00:33:25.46\00:33:27.38 Is that right? We were there nine years, 00:33:27.39\00:33:30.00 a great training place. What motivated you to 00:33:31.82\00:33:34.46 join self supporting work, I mean you didn't have 00:33:34.47\00:33:36.62 to, I can't imagine it was for the salaries? 00:33:36.63\00:33:39.73 Well, yeah, they paid really good wages, 00:33:39.74\00:33:42.80 I think we made $100 a month, 00:33:43.32\00:33:46.40 and that was for the two of us. Oh I see. 00:33:46.41\00:33:49.31 And it wasn't a forty hour a week either by the 00:33:49.32\00:33:51.35 way. I see, okay. Well we all know actually those 00:33:51.36\00:33:55.76 who have been in self supporting work that it is 00:33:55.77\00:33:57.85 not a simple work, it's full of many blessings, 00:33:57.86\00:34:01.18 but there is never enough money for everything 00:34:01.19\00:34:03.25 is there? Never. If the roof's leaking, 00:34:03.26\00:34:05.55 if the van doesn't run, if the boiler breaks 00:34:05.56\00:34:09.09 down, you got to find a way to fix it, don't you? 00:34:09.10\00:34:11.85 Right. And so as you think back on your life 00:34:11.86\00:34:16.23 and your investment, if you had a choice to 00:34:16.24\00:34:20.36 consider whether you do this over again or not, 00:34:20.37\00:34:22.91 would you do it again? I surely would. 00:34:22.92\00:34:25.29 And what was it, why would you say that? 00:34:26.20\00:34:28.37 What it do for you? Well, first of all I want to 00:34:28.38\00:34:31.64 say God is good, isn't He? Amen. 00:34:31.65\00:34:34.51 I would like to encourage any of you out there 00:34:36.04\00:34:37.85 who are not exactly sure that where the 00:34:37.86\00:34:40.84 Lord want you to be, or doing exactly what He 00:34:40.85\00:34:43.90 wants you to do? That you would seek 00:34:43.91\00:34:46.08 His guidance and listen carefully when you know 00:34:46.09\00:34:50.23 what and where He wants you to be, 00:34:50.24\00:34:51.94 give it your very best. And He'll be responsible 00:34:51.95\00:34:56.56 for the results, we don't have to worry 00:34:56.57\00:34:58.53 about that. There were many times when the going 00:34:58.54\00:35:03.88 was pretty tough and you weren't sure where 00:35:03.89\00:35:05.66 to go, what to do? Well there were times we 00:35:05.67\00:35:08.87 didn't understand, why things happened, 00:35:08.88\00:35:10.95 like loosing a job, but the truth is 00:35:10.96\00:35:14.65 that it was time for us to move on. 00:35:14.66\00:35:17.22 It's very clear to us today that everything 00:35:17.89\00:35:20.15 that happened to us and every move that we 00:35:20.16\00:35:22.76 made was God leading us along to teach us lesson 00:35:22.77\00:35:26.91 that we needed to learn to prepare us for the 00:35:26.92\00:35:29.75 next phase of our life. We expect that even to 00:35:29.76\00:35:34.29 the retirement years, He had led us to the 00:35:34.30\00:35:37.29 right place at the right time; we expect our next 00:35:37.30\00:35:40.39 move to be the heaven. And yes, if I had it all 00:35:40.40\00:35:44.29 to do all over again, we do the same thing. 00:35:44.30\00:35:48.10 Maybe I've not been blessed above all 00:35:48.97\00:35:51.10 people that I know off. We thank the Lord 00:35:51.11\00:35:53.88 everyday for His goodness to us. 00:35:53.89\00:35:55.82 Thank you Brother Martin, let's give these two 00:35:57.29\00:35:58.84 men a great amen. Thank for every thing 00:35:58.85\00:36:02.35 that you represent. Thank you. Thank you for 00:36:02.36\00:36:03.78 being with us. They have in that building the 00:41:42.50\00:41:45.08 Chapel, their bakeries, their press and if you 00:41:45.09\00:41:48.09 see the little red box on the side of the 00:41:48.10\00:41:49.84 building, the town's post office run by our 00:41:49.85\00:41:52.99 institution. They do bread baking there in a 00:41:53.00\00:41:56.45 serious way not loaves by 10s, 20s, and a 100s 00:41:56.46\00:42:00.39 but the loaves by the 1000s as you see here 00:42:00.40\00:42:03.33 pictured they go by semi truck all over Norway, 00:42:03.34\00:42:06.91 Denmark, and parts of Sweden. 00:42:06.92\00:42:09.35 There outreach program is pretty vigorous, 00:42:10.05\00:42:12.12 they work in the malls, they present health 00:42:12.13\00:42:15.00 expo programs. And when everything 00:42:27.91\00:42:30.83 is done on the screening program, 00:42:30.84\00:42:32.14 you can always surely satisfy them with a nice 00:42:32.15\00:42:35.24 anti stress chair message. Let's move now to the 00:42:35.25\00:42:39.76 Eastern Europe to Huggley a health center there 00:42:39.77\00:42:43.55 in Romania. Here this lifestyle center the 00:42:43.56\00:42:47.48 busiest lifestyle self supporting lifestyle 00:42:47.49\00:42:49.93 center in the world taking an average of 50 00:42:49.94\00:42:52.63 patients a session started only in 1996 and 00:42:52.64\00:42:56.77 since then have served over 7000 people not for a 00:42:56.78\00:43:00.48 one or two day program these are 2 weeks program 00:43:00.49\00:43:03.55 consecutively follow throughout the year. 00:43:03.56\00:43:06.57 To the southern part of this facility is the 00:43:07.49\00:43:10.37 beautiful pastural views to the valleys. 00:43:10.38\00:43:12.65 It's on of the most beautiful sites that 00:43:12.66\00:43:15.14 we have, the rooms are very comfortable for 00:43:15.15\00:43:18.59 anyone to come there. They give excellent 00:43:18.60\00:43:21.76 treatments there as well, they have a well 00:43:21.77\00:43:25.06 developed campus that now includes not only 00:43:25.07\00:43:29.89 the original building when this facility started 00:43:29.90\00:43:32.65 there was a Soya bean field and all these 00:43:32.66\00:43:35.05 buildings had been added since 1996, 1999 the 00:43:35.06\00:43:38.78 school buildings were added for a medical 00:43:38.79\00:43:41.20 missionary training program. And in the next 00:43:41.21\00:43:44.37 picture you see God's rainbow blessing right 00:43:44.38\00:43:46.99 over the school and sanitarium. 00:43:47.00\00:43:49.18 In the last picture from Herghelia we'll show 00:43:49.19\00:43:51.85 one of the classroom shots. We train students 00:43:51.86\00:43:55.20 from eight surrounding Eastern European countries 00:43:55.21\00:43:58.67 who come there to receive medical missionary 00:43:58.68\00:44:01.18 training. Let's go a little further East and 00:44:01.19\00:44:04.08 North into the former Soviet Union up into 00:44:04.09\00:44:07.37 South Ukraine to Krakow to the new life, 00:44:07.38\00:44:11.12 lifestyle center who has 11 days sessions 00:44:11.13\00:44:14.88 repeatedly. Here you see their little sanitarium 00:44:14.89\00:44:17.91 building; they can now take about 16 patients 00:44:17.92\00:44:20.90 per session. People told us in the Soviet country 00:44:20.91\00:44:24.15 where medicine is free, people will never pay 00:44:24.16\00:44:26.61 to come in and pay privately but ever since 00:44:26.62\00:44:30.07 the facility opened there's been a 6 month 00:44:30.08\00:44:32.01 waiting list because they get real treatments in 00:44:32.02\00:44:34.73 a real center, and so people are happy 00:44:34.74\00:44:37.09 to come there. Next picture shows just 00:44:37.10\00:44:39.68 behind the sanitarium you are just a stones 00:44:39.69\00:44:42.34 throw from the huge Boog river that you can 00:44:42.35\00:44:45.15 overlook from the sanitarium. 00:44:45.16\00:44:47.33 They have excellent physician care one on one 00:44:47.82\00:44:50.64 there with our physicians and the massage 00:44:50.65\00:44:53.66 therapists are very experienced in the work 00:44:53.67\00:44:56.68 they have done since 2000. And outside the 00:44:56.69\00:45:00.30 group together in our last 00:45:00.31\00:45:02.26 picture for a group of the lifestyle guests and 00:45:02.27\00:45:05.01 some of the staff gathered with them. 00:45:05.02\00:45:07.20 Then God bless for another sanitarium in 00:45:08.12\00:45:10.54 Ukraine that opened in January 1 of 2002 called 00:45:10.55\00:45:14.57 Novi Obihody or the new Novi Obihody. 00:45:14.58\00:45:17.73 This lifestyle centre also has 11 days programs 00:45:17.74\00:45:21.68 repeatedly. This facility as you see there 00:45:21.69\00:45:24.51 pictured the large building is the health 00:45:24.52\00:45:26.38 center for about 24 patients now and the 00:45:26.39\00:45:29.82 homes as you see further down there we purchase 00:45:29.83\00:45:32.71 for about $300 each they weren't finished but 00:45:32.72\00:45:35.91 we're able to originally buy the property land, 00:45:35.92\00:45:38.46 buildings and everything for around $300 each. 00:45:38.47\00:45:42.23 They grow flowers profusely there as we were 00:45:42.24\00:45:44.77 counseled to do for our sanitariums. 00:45:44.78\00:45:47.41 The patients get a good education program, 00:45:47.80\00:45:49.98 they have a regular cooking classes and how to 00:45:49.99\00:45:52.66 make good healthful food. The physicians spend 00:45:52.67\00:45:56.50 time with their patients answering their 00:45:56.51\00:45:58.50 questions and lecturing with them. 00:45:58.51\00:46:00.50 Then they go outside as a patients staff groups 00:46:01.03\00:46:04.42 and get warm up exercises but in Ukraine it's not 00:46:04.43\00:46:07.65 always spring time. And there are times when it's 00:46:07.66\00:46:10.71 winter but you know they tell the patients there 00:46:10.72\00:46:13.75 isn't any bad weather there's just bad clothing 00:46:13.76\00:46:16.89 let's go anyway. And you don't have 00:46:16.90\00:46:19.35 to tell the Ukrainians more than that once and 00:46:19.36\00:46:21.61 they are out and walking. In the spring time its 00:46:21.62\00:46:25.15 serious agricultural time. They grow almost all 00:46:25.16\00:46:28.66 the food they use in that busy sanitarium, 00:46:28.67\00:46:31.04 and so when harvest time comes all the staff 00:46:31.05\00:46:34.27 help including the physicians to make 00:46:34.28\00:46:36.33 sure there is plenty for the whole year because 00:46:36.34\00:46:38.78 they also have several months waiting list of 00:46:38.79\00:46:40.99 people just wanting to come and get that 00:46:41.00\00:46:42.99 beautiful treatment at Novi. Besides running the 00:46:43.00\00:46:47.91 program there on the campus they are constantly 00:46:47.92\00:46:50.20 out throughout the country and teaching programs, 00:46:50.21\00:46:52.46 they run an excellent medical missionary program 00:46:52.47\00:46:54.99 this is their community outreach program. 00:46:55.00\00:46:57.51 And besides that they don't forget their local 00:46:57.52\00:47:00.05 village of Novi and there they are going door to 00:47:00.06\00:47:02.60 door offering programs including Bibles studies. 00:47:02.61\00:47:06.69 Let's come back to America to the west coast 00:47:06.70\00:47:09.98 to Weimar Institute for the well known Newstart 00:47:09.99\00:47:13.21 program. Newstart program ministers over 18 day 00:47:13.22\00:47:17.33 wellness program and has done for number of 00:47:17.34\00:47:20.34 years. And during their 00:49:25.76\00:49:28.39 experience and working with patients, 00:49:28.40\00:49:30.27 they also work with the local Portuguese Union in 00:49:30.28\00:49:33.36 running with us in OCI several pilot projects on 00:49:33.37\00:49:36.61 medical missionary training, here's one of 00:49:36.62\00:49:38.65 the school groups, here's another year's 00:49:38.66\00:49:40.62 training. And now recently they finally secured 00:49:40.63\00:49:44.17 after 5 years of negotiation a property 00:49:44.18\00:49:47.10 near the city up on the hill that you see in the 00:49:47.11\00:49:49.26 background the town of Fenella. 00:49:49.27\00:49:51.50 This beautiful property we just have one picture 00:49:51.51\00:49:53.86 to show you, these are some of the buildings 00:49:53.87\00:49:56.04 that'll begin to remodel now into a sanitarium, 00:49:56.05\00:49:59.14 a medical missionary school, housing and 00:49:59.15\00:50:00.94 everything so their staff may continue. 00:50:00.95\00:50:03.58 Finally I would like to show you a couple of more 00:50:04.18\00:50:05.67 pictures of new endeavor in Sweden called 00:50:05.68\00:50:08.16 Lifestyle TV. Here is Dr. Nedley speaking there 00:50:08.17\00:50:12.94 in Sweden and what's unique about this self 00:50:12.95\00:50:16.26 supporting television program is they are able 00:50:16.27\00:50:18.57 to broadcast over Scandinavia their health 00:50:18.58\00:50:22.21 message but then offer health expos as a follow 00:50:22.22\00:50:25.52 up and then go out as a TV group to work in the 00:50:25.53\00:50:28.68 communities, they advertised for and 00:50:28.69\00:50:30.80 do follow up with that. And by the way there is 00:50:30.81\00:50:33.41 the health expo being offered in the exhibit 00:50:33.42\00:50:36.43 hall by them and several of us cooperating 00:50:36.44\00:50:38.72 together. Well we have been featuring self 00:50:38.73\00:50:42.22 supporting institutions since they were the 00:50:42.23\00:50:45.72 reason that ASI actually began. 00:50:45.73\00:50:48.16 But in the last few minutes that we have here 00:50:48.17\00:50:50.40 I would also like to extend just a few minutes 00:50:50.41\00:50:53.62 to interview several people that now represent 00:50:53.63\00:50:56.55 individuals who have also the medical 00:50:56.56\00:50:59.47 missionary vision. I am so glad it's not just 00:50:59.48\00:51:02.22 only related to institutions that 00:51:02.23\00:51:05.48 do this kind of work. But the reality is that 00:51:05.49\00:51:08.16 there are many Adventists lay people who have 00:51:08.17\00:51:10.75 realized from reading God's council that medical 00:51:10.76\00:51:13.73 missionary work is the right arm of the Gospel. 00:51:13.74\00:51:16.25 I'd like to introduce to you Karen Houghton who 00:51:16.93\00:51:19.14 comes from Fallbrook, California. 00:51:19.15\00:51:22.33 And she has been conducting cooking classes 00:51:22.34\00:51:26.44 in her local church for a number of years. 00:51:26.45\00:51:29.07 And I think you average between a 100 and 130 00:51:29.74\00:51:33.47 people is that right. That's correct. 00:51:33.48\00:51:35.18 And that's a pretty good size cooking school. 00:51:35.19\00:51:37.24 And Karen as you share with them recipes as 00:51:37.61\00:51:40.58 they sample your food, what else do you try to 00:51:40.59\00:51:43.18 do in your cooking programs to help 00:51:43.19\00:51:45.19 the people? Well, I always give health 00:51:45.20\00:51:47.58 lectures and about 12 years ago when I started 00:51:47.59\00:51:51.30 my cooking schools, I had to create my own 00:51:51.31\00:51:53.89 health lectures and I based them on the natural 00:51:53.90\00:51:56.54 laws of health. But then The Abundant Living 00:51:56.55\00:51:59.95 series became available and I think that was 00:51:59.96\00:52:02.11 around 2001 or 2002, and I was just thrilled 00:52:02.12\00:52:06.55 when I saw that because it has excellent 00:52:06.56\00:52:08.61 graphics, colored pictures that just really 00:52:08.62\00:52:11.72 get their attention and so I have used that. 00:52:11.73\00:52:14.77 And what I really liked about their program is, 00:52:14.78\00:52:17.75 you can insert as more research is done and 00:52:17.76\00:52:20.66 you see studies that have been done they back 00:52:20.67\00:52:23.76 up our health message. That's right. 00:52:23.77\00:52:25.21 You can insert that into your PowerPoint so 00:52:25.22\00:52:27.42 it keeps the program very current. 00:52:27.43\00:52:29.32 Very good, and Karen where else have you had an 00:52:29.90\00:52:32.93 opportunity to use The Abundant Living series 00:52:32.94\00:52:35.18 the health talks? The health talks are used, 00:52:35.19\00:52:37.87 the first time I actually used them was in the 00:52:37.88\00:52:40.35 Philippines, I gave the health lectures just 00:52:40.36\00:52:43.11 prior to when my husband preached and I found 00:52:43.12\00:52:46.19 it there it worked very well in the Philippines. 00:52:46.20\00:52:48.77 And then last year I used the series in a cooking 00:52:49.30\00:52:53.40 school in Phoenix, Arizona. Shawn Boonstra 00:52:53.41\00:52:56.31 asked me to come and do a cooking school 00:52:56.32\00:52:58.45 just prior to his meetings. 00:52:58.46\00:52:59.88 And that's when we had a 130 people come out 00:53:00.45\00:53:02.79 and a good number of those people transferred 00:53:02.80\00:53:05.12 over into the evangelistic meetings and were 00:53:05.13\00:53:07.14 baptized, so our health message is the opening 00:53:07.15\00:53:10.59 door. Amen. You know Karen I think that you have 00:53:10.60\00:53:13.71 learned as we have that we reach a class of 00:53:13.72\00:53:16.22 people when we use the health work in our 00:53:16.23\00:53:18.83 evangelism that we wouldn't reach otherwise, 00:53:18.84\00:53:21.06 did you find out that to be true also? I found 00:53:21.07\00:53:22.24 out that very true. Thank you so much for 00:53:22.25\00:53:24.42 sharing with us today. Thank you. 00:53:24.43\00:53:26.10 You can find in the copies of The Abundant Living 00:53:26.11\00:53:28.41 if you come back to the health expo clear to 00:53:28.42\00:53:30.97 the back of the exhibit hall in Isles 100 and 00:53:30.98\00:53:33.53 200, 200 and 300, they would be available there. 00:53:33.54\00:53:37.34 Dr Naren James you come here today from Kentucky, 00:53:37.75\00:53:40.67 you are from Kentucky is that right? 00:53:40.68\00:53:42.11 Correct, right here in Kentucky. 00:53:42.12\00:53:43.46 And I understand that you represent an 00:53:43.47\00:53:46.08 organization that's not very old called AMEN, I 00:53:46.09\00:53:49.93 like that name. That's right that's called 00:53:49.94\00:53:52.15 Adventists Medical Evangelism Network, Amen. 00:53:52.16\00:53:55.31 And when you spoke to me Dr. James you said that 00:53:55.90\00:53:59.44 you had a couple of objectives, but maybe even 00:53:59.45\00:54:02.89 before sharing that so this is Adventist Medical, 00:54:02.90\00:54:07.76 help me out, Evangelism Network. Okay. 00:54:07.77\00:54:13.31 And who are you targeting? Well our target 00:54:13.32\00:54:16.27 currently is physician and dental community, 00:54:16.28\00:54:18.54 and we hope to expand that to a larger medical 00:54:18.55\00:54:20.73 community but that's our target currently. 00:54:20.74\00:54:22.98 And how old of an organization are you now? 00:54:22.99\00:54:25.18 Barely two years old going on. 00:54:25.83\00:54:29.08 And about how many members do you have? 00:54:29.09\00:54:31.63 We are close to, pretty close to a few members 00:54:31.64\00:54:33.73 short of a hundred right now. 00:54:33.74\00:54:35.05 Is that right a hundred, nearly a hundred 00:54:35.06\00:54:37.20 enthusiastic vision oriented physicians and 00:54:37.21\00:54:41.58 dentists; I think that's pretty powerful? 00:54:41.59\00:54:43.34 Amen that's a great journey for two years. 00:54:43.35\00:54:46.29 What are some of your objectives? 00:54:46.30\00:54:47.81 What would you like to do? 00:54:47.82\00:54:48.79 Well first I like to just mention our mission 00:54:48.80\00:54:51.06 AMEN, I mean our mission really is to, 00:54:51.07\00:54:53.04 is geared towards equipping our physicians, 00:54:53.05\00:54:56.98 Adventists physicians and dentists to be 00:54:56.99\00:54:58.52 effective medical evangelists. And so that 00:54:58.53\00:55:00.70 takes the form of two main objectives one, 00:55:00.71\00:55:02.72 it's training our physicians and dentists 00:55:02.73\00:55:04.92 to become effective in their offices and the 00:55:04.93\00:55:08.56 work place to be evangelists and 00:55:08.57\00:55:10.83 seeing the patients differently beyond usually 00:55:10.84\00:55:13.15 encounter being an opportunity to cure is an 00:55:13.16\00:55:17.05 opportunity to invite that patient to 00:55:17.06\00:55:20.88 relationship with Jesus Christ. And secondly we 00:55:20.89\00:55:23.24 would like to invite our physicians and dentists 00:55:23.25\00:55:25.09 to be involved in overseas, to be 00:55:25.10\00:55:26.31 involved in overseas missions efforts in 00:55:26.32\00:55:28.22 episodic way. Okay, and so you are trying to 00:55:28.23\00:55:31.18 equip them somehow? Oh sure part of our 00:55:31.19\00:55:33.37 annual conference which we finished two annual 00:55:33.38\00:55:36.26 conferences so far. We have seminars like 00:55:36.27\00:55:38.96 we do it at ASI would give specifically to 00:55:38.97\00:55:40.66 physicians and dentists towards equipping them 00:55:40.67\00:55:42.65 how they can actually share Christ within their 00:55:42.66\00:55:45.45 marketplace which is a medical dental practice. 00:55:45.46\00:55:47.32 Now just historically when you came up with this 00:55:48.04\00:55:50.56 idea and I think Dr. Mike Arledge was involved as 00:55:50.57\00:55:55.47 well, did this kind of brainstorm right here 00:55:55.48\00:55:57.97 in the ASI meeting? Well this is an amazing 00:55:57.98\00:56:00.17 story of ASI and that's what so exciting, 00:56:00.18\00:56:02.11 I mean I started coming to ASI 8 years ago at 00:56:02.12\00:56:04.59 2000 session. And year after year I became more 00:56:04.60\00:56:09.62 and more ministry oriented in my practice. 00:56:09.63\00:56:11.36 And four years ago at the Albuquerque Convention, 00:56:11.37\00:56:13.93 I happen to sit at breakfast with gentleman named 00:56:13.94\00:56:16.55 Michael Arledge who was just finishing family 00:56:16.56\00:56:18.18 medicine at that time. And he said we marched 00:56:18.19\00:56:19.91 today. He said we marched today, 00:56:19.92\00:56:21.04 and we were brainstorming how we could energize 00:56:21.05\00:56:23.51 the medical work among the physician dental 00:56:23.52\00:56:24.97 community. And we left and some time later 00:56:24.98\00:56:28.22 after that I was in the midst of my own 00:56:28.23\00:56:30.39 personnel devotions. I was just, I just having 00:56:30.40\00:56:33.27 an amazing time, just rehearsing what God has 00:56:33.28\00:56:35.72 done in my life, so I got up from there 00:56:35.73\00:56:37.39 and thought we should do something beyond that, 00:56:37.40\00:56:39.22 and I called Michael and I said, how about if we 00:56:39.23\00:56:41.05 do lunch at ASI and I was at Cincinnati 2004. 00:56:41.06\00:56:45.03 We had a first lunch in at ASI we had 80 00:56:45.04\00:56:48.30 professionals were also attending, and that were, 00:56:48.31\00:56:51.40 that's were Amen started. Did you have a guest 00:56:51.41\00:56:53.93 speaker that day or anything? 00:56:53.94\00:56:55.21 We had like five different physicians and dentists 00:56:55.22\00:56:57.44 sharing what they do their in their practices, 00:56:57.45\00:57:00.12 and that was the theme of our, and our theme was 00:57:00.13\00:57:03.74 energizing the right arm. And wasn't 00:57:03.75\00:57:06.26 Elder Mark Finley interested also in 00:57:06.27\00:57:08.79 encouraging you? Yes, subsequent I 00:57:08.80\00:57:10.14 have to mention ASI leadership had been a 00:57:10.15\00:57:12.16 great, great powerful support to us. 00:57:12.17\00:57:14.87 We were offered a teleconferencing built 00:57:14.88\00:57:17.99 with ASI to be able to meet and teleconference 00:57:18.00\00:57:20.75 after that.
