As we now open the 60th 00:02:35.07\00:02:39.37 convention, may it be the greatest of all and may 00:02:39.38\00:02:42.75 we find harmony, love and sharing as you 00:02:42.76\00:02:46.02 would have it. We love You and 00:02:46.03\00:02:48.38 want to serve you, amen, amen. 00:02:48.39\00:02:51.79 Good evening, good evening. 00:03:00.42\00:03:02.79 And welcome to the ASI Convention, 00:03:02.80\00:03:05.25 the 60th anniversary. This is a special year 00:03:05.26\00:03:08.52 isn't it Debbie. Oh! It's truly special, wow, 00:03:08.53\00:03:11.02 think about God has led us to this point, 00:03:11.03\00:03:13.26 that's right, to experience 60 years 00:03:13.27\00:03:15.36 of sharing Christ in our market place. 00:03:15.37\00:03:17.16 That's right, you know years ago our pioneers 00:03:17.17\00:03:19.02 never thought we'd have 60 additional years 00:03:19.03\00:03:21.73 after 1947. I am sure that was never in their 00:03:21.74\00:03:25.43 thinking, no and you know I think maybe what 00:03:25.44\00:03:28.62 had been in their thinking Ron is that so soon 00:03:28.63\00:03:31.75 we would be in heaven. That's right, 00:03:31.76\00:03:33.96 and that is our yearning. While we are extremely 00:03:33.97\00:03:36.58 excited that God has brought us to this point 00:03:36.59\00:03:38.65 we really do want to accelerate the pace so we 00:03:38.66\00:03:41.33 can go on. And that's why we are here tonight 00:03:41.34\00:03:42.40 isn't it? Yes it is, and there are some special 00:03:42.41\00:03:44.52 things besides this 60th, there are some special 00:03:44.53\00:03:46.89 things happening at this convention aren't they. 00:03:46.90\00:03:49.10 Oh! Yes because it's the 60th we have a number 00:03:49.11\00:03:52.50 of exciting features that we want everyone to 00:03:52.51\00:03:54.87 take advantage of. Now I was in the 00:03:54.88\00:03:56.74 exhibits just a little bit ago and it seemed like 00:03:56.75\00:04:00.49 it was especially full, in the past we had about 00:04:00.50\00:04:03.68 300, just under 300 exhibits. 00:04:03.69\00:04:05.82 What's happened this year? Well you know I 00:04:05.83\00:04:08.26 happen to bring a list of, Ron, oh really, 00:04:08.27\00:04:10.08 let me just here, oh really, if we just slip 00:04:10.09\00:04:11.28 right over here I have a very short list, 00:04:11.29\00:04:13.66 you're organized Debbie. Well you know I didn't 00:04:13.67\00:04:15.43 want to really miss anything so, 00:04:15.44\00:04:16.84 can we just highlight a few of them. 00:04:16.85\00:04:18.18 Oh! Let's see, okay alright, 00:04:18.19\00:04:19.16 I know it really is just a few, oh yeah, 00:04:19.17\00:04:22.43 well actually we do have so much to share, 00:04:22.44\00:04:25.97 you think we can highlight all of these or, 00:04:26.68\00:04:29.04 we'll just take a few. Okay we'll just take 00:04:29.05\00:04:30.69 a few, okay we will just take a few, yeah, 00:04:30.70\00:04:31.67 yeah okay. Well you mention the exhibits, 00:04:31.68\00:04:32.73 right, and we actually have over 320 exhibits 00:04:32.74\00:04:36.60 this year, wow. So it's a record breaking 00:04:36.61\00:04:39.81 experience. Oh! That's wonderful, 00:04:39.82\00:04:42.03 that you know these exhibitors have a special 00:04:42.69\00:04:45.61 presentation. Each one of them have something 00:04:45.62\00:04:47.81 special to say to us, right. Yes they do, 00:04:47.82\00:04:50.17 they want to let us know that there are different 00:04:50.18\00:04:52.63 ways, many ways that we can share Christ in the 00:04:52.64\00:04:55.06 market place. I understand that there is 00:04:55.07\00:04:56.65 something unusual happening in the back of 00:04:56.66\00:04:59.18 the exhibit hall this year. Oh! That's right, 00:04:59.19\00:05:00.94 way in the back usually the place where no one 00:05:00.95\00:05:03.88 goes, where it's kind of difficult for exhibitors 00:05:03.89\00:05:06.12 that are back there, I know that, 00:05:06.13\00:05:07.87 but we have some exciting things. 00:05:07.88\00:05:08.93 You know what we're going to have back there Ron? 00:05:08.94\00:05:10.40 Well, tell me? A health expo. 00:05:10.41\00:05:13.12 A health expo, you know when I walk 00:05:13.13\00:05:15.64 around the convention I get tired, 00:05:16.75\00:05:18.71 my muscles just really, really feel it after 00:05:18.72\00:05:21.67 a while. Would they have massage? 00:05:21.68\00:05:24.12 Yes, we have something for those tired muscles, 00:05:24.13\00:05:26.83 oh well. For those aching feet we have 00:05:26.84\00:05:28.43 massage therapist that can help relax those 00:05:28.44\00:05:31.57 muscles. Oh that's for me, that's for me, yes. 00:05:31.58\00:05:33.63 And we have some other exciting things, okay, 00:05:33.64\00:05:35.43 okay, some other features. 00:05:35.44\00:05:36.41 This is one of the places, at the times we are 00:05:36.42\00:05:39.27 able to premier some exciting new things that 00:05:39.28\00:05:42.27 are going to happen for ASI members. 00:05:42.28\00:05:43.92 Well we are in a new era, yes, 00:05:43.93\00:05:45.99 we absolutely are, of technology, 00:05:46.00\00:05:47.25 yes, but are we into technology? 00:05:47.26\00:05:48.97 Yes, we are into technology, 00:05:48.98\00:05:50.41 we are going to take advantage of it, really, 00:05:50.42\00:05:52.24 by using the netadventist.org, 00:05:52.25\00:05:55.28 NetAsi, yes, NetAsi, NetAsi. So we will be able 00:05:55.29\00:05:58.89 to provide to our members as a benefit a free 00:05:58.90\00:06:02.62 websites. No, no, yes, I understood that this was 00:06:02.63\00:06:05.26 worth about $250 a year. It is, it's really 00:06:05.27\00:06:08.13 a fancy stuff, it's complimentary from 00:06:08.14\00:06:10.68 ASI. Wow, and it's for the purpose of ministry. 00:06:10.69\00:06:13.60 You see websites, technology is no good 00:06:13.61\00:06:16.55 unless you use it, wow. But if you can harness 00:06:16.56\00:06:19.21 that power in order to be just really get the 00:06:19.22\00:06:22.76 word out then it's really, it be really useful. 00:06:22.77\00:06:25.52 Now if you're an organizational member, 00:06:25.53\00:06:26.94 a nonprofit supporting ministry or a business, 00:06:26.95\00:06:30.49 you are an organizational member, 00:06:30.50\00:06:32.38 you can actually sign up for it here. 00:06:32.39\00:06:34.66 Yes you can and actually right here, 00:06:34.67\00:06:36.12 there are actually going to be some 00:06:36.13\00:06:37.48 demonstrations, oh, some so people can ask 00:06:37.49\00:06:40.16 questions, so we can watch out, we can get 00:06:40.17\00:06:41.89 training right here. Oh! Right here, right here, 00:06:41.90\00:06:44.02 we want to encourage everyone who is interested 00:06:44.03\00:06:46.84 to having their website to sign up, 00:06:46.85\00:06:48.72 because this is for ministry purposes. 00:06:48.73\00:06:50.61 So, even those who have a business while they may 00:06:50.62\00:06:53.06 have their own website, they can still use it, 00:06:53.07\00:06:55.15 they can still use it for ministry. 00:06:55.16\00:06:56.68 Oh! That's wonderful, because that's what we 00:06:56.69\00:06:57.89 are all about, sharing Christ in the 00:06:57.90\00:06:59.73 market place. I'm thrilled. 00:06:59.74\00:07:00.71 Oh and something else, yeah, you know we have 00:07:00.72\00:07:02.53 our standard 20 seminars, that's wonderful, 00:07:02.54\00:07:06.61 yes we have 20 seminars, I can get training in 00:07:06.62\00:07:09.36 different areas. In different areas, 00:07:09.37\00:07:10.90 and we are actually going to hear more about each 00:07:10.91\00:07:12.44 of those later in the program. Oh good, good, 00:07:12.45\00:07:14.71 so we'll have that, okay we can leave that along. 00:07:14.72\00:07:16.24 Oh! another exciting thing Ron, 00:07:16.25\00:07:17.92 I am really excited about this, 00:07:17.93\00:07:19.12 the train them now initiative, 00:07:19.13\00:07:21.60 train them now, yes, who we are trying to train? 00:07:21.61\00:07:23.35 Well, we're training more lay people to do 00:07:23.36\00:07:25.07 ministry. We're going to train lay people? 00:07:25.08\00:07:27.05 We are going to train lay people to share the 00:07:27.06\00:07:28.57 gospel. I thought we were lay people 00:07:28.58\00:07:30.39 being trained. We are being trained and we are 00:07:30.40\00:07:32.46 training lay people to train, 00:07:32.47\00:07:33.87 well you get the point. Oh well, well, the whole 00:07:33.88\00:07:35.71 point is that we've actually embarked on this 00:07:35.72\00:07:38.42 training initiative and we are going to hear 00:07:38.43\00:07:40.67 highlights of that experience at the 00:07:40.68\00:07:42.79 convention this year. That sounds great, 00:07:42.80\00:07:44.57 that's wonderful. Oh let's see what else do 00:07:44.58\00:07:46.10 we have, oh now this is really exciting. 00:07:46.11\00:07:48.00 You know you can't have a 60th anniversary 00:07:48.01\00:07:50.80 without reflecting on the past and understanding 00:07:50.81\00:07:53.56 how it has brought us to this point, 00:07:53.57\00:07:55.80 that's right. So we actually going to be 00:07:55.81\00:07:57.46 looking at two important pillars on which ASI has 00:07:57.47\00:08:01.92 been founded. During this convention? 00:08:01.93\00:08:03.51 During this convention, okay, 00:08:03.52\00:08:05.15 so on Thursday morning, two pillars, two pillars, 00:08:05.16\00:08:07.33 yes, what would that be? Well the two pillars are 00:08:07.34\00:08:09.50 the medical missionary work, okay, okay, 00:08:09.51\00:08:11.82 and then the education, self supporting work, 00:08:11.83\00:08:14.72 oh wonderful. So, we're going to really 00:08:14.73\00:08:16.98 be highlighting and understanding, right, 00:08:16.99\00:08:19.23 how those have contributed to our 00:08:19.24\00:08:20.87 existence today, right. And look at this big 00:08:20.88\00:08:23.31 crowd out here, oh isn't it wonderful 00:08:23.32\00:08:25.13 to see so many people get a passion about sharing 00:08:25.14\00:08:27.22 Christ. We want to welcome each of you here, 00:08:27.23\00:08:29.54 you took time out of your busy schedule to be 00:08:29.55\00:08:32.06 with us during these important days and we want 00:08:32.07\00:08:35.38 to thank you for your presence and your support. 00:08:35.39\00:08:37.30 We do and we want you to take advantage of all 00:08:37.94\00:08:40.01 that we have planned through the Holy Spirit so 00:08:40.02\00:08:43.75 that we can share Christ more effectively in our 00:08:43.76\00:08:45.65 market place. Oh I can't wait to get to the rest 00:08:45.66\00:08:48.09 of this list, oh I tell you, 00:08:48.10\00:08:49.55 yes it's quite a bit. Well we'll save this for 00:08:49.56\00:08:53.17 the rest of the convention. 00:08:53.18\00:08:54.35 Well thank you, appreciate that. 00:08:54.36\00:08:56.84 It's my privilege tonight to interview one of 00:09:05.41\00:09:08.87 our pioneers, an old timer, Ed Martin. 00:09:08.88\00:09:14.10 Ed, do you have a microphone there, okay. 00:09:14.11\00:09:16.90 Yeah there you got that right on the old timer. 00:09:16.91\00:09:19.58 You know, you know Edwin we put out a special 00:09:19.59\00:09:22.73 magazine this time for the convention and this is 00:09:22.74\00:09:25.92 the 60th anniversary magazine. 00:09:25.93\00:09:28.09 It looks a little old and may be it has some 00:09:28.10\00:09:31.49 features that are a little different then usual. 00:09:31.50\00:09:34.34 This picture, do you remember this picture? 00:09:34.35\00:09:36.31 I sure do, yes, yes I do. When do you think this 00:09:36.32\00:09:39.30 picture was taken? I don't know for sure 00:09:39.31\00:09:41.19 but between around 1938 to 40. 00:09:41.20\00:09:43.94 Okay, okay, and so you saw this picture way 00:09:43.95\00:09:47.03 back then? Yes, long time ago. 00:09:47.04\00:09:48.47 You know the man on this cover 00:09:48.48\00:09:50.54 I knew the man on the cover. 00:09:50.55\00:09:51.98 Wow, now why would we put this man on the cover 00:09:51.99\00:09:58.20 of the 60th anniversary? Because he was the one 00:09:58.21\00:10:01.13 who had the ideas, the one was the 00:10:01.14\00:10:03.68 background for starting ASI, 00:10:03.69\00:10:05.62 and Dr. E.A. Sutherland. And you knew him? 00:10:05.63\00:10:09.54 I did, wow, I am just looking at here and 00:10:09.55\00:10:11.98 thinking that about these many people in this 00:10:11.99\00:10:14.43 first 10 seats here and so attended the very 00:10:14.44\00:10:17.20 first meeting. Can't believe it, that's right, 00:10:17.21\00:10:19.56 that is impressive, a long time ago. 00:10:19.57\00:10:22.02 So, ASI started back in 1947 and 00:10:22.03\00:10:26.54 Dr. E.A. Sutherland was the first president, yes. 00:10:26.55\00:10:29.93 And what was his credentials to be the first 00:10:30.74\00:10:34.76 president of ASI, what was this all about? 00:10:34.77\00:10:36.85 Well he was the one who started 00:10:36.86\00:10:38.87 Madison Institution which fostered a lot of 00:10:38.88\00:10:43.18 little self supporting institutions all through 00:10:43.19\00:10:46.64 the south. Now Madison College began when? 00:10:46.65\00:10:49.46 1904, 1904. Now was there anything special about 00:10:49.47\00:10:54.07 this school? Well everything was special 00:10:54.08\00:10:56.57 about it. I was just thinking about 00:10:56.58\00:10:58.73 Dr. Sutherland and you know he was a deeply 00:10:58.74\00:11:01.36 spiritual man, he believed in Mrs. White, 00:11:01.37\00:11:03.68 he believed in the Spirit of Prophecy, 00:11:03.69\00:11:05.66 he believed in the teachings of the Bible 00:11:05.67\00:11:07.85 and he thought that they should be made practical 00:11:07.86\00:11:10.52 in everything we do. Wherever we go, 00:11:10.53\00:11:13.09 whatever we do, we should be living out 00:11:13.10\00:11:15.57 these principles. So he was an action man? 00:11:15.58\00:11:17.20 He was an action man. Now I understand that 00:11:17.21\00:11:19.65 you went, you went to school at one of the units, 00:11:19.66\00:11:22.88 one of the Madison units, yes, but what was that? 00:11:22.89\00:11:25.76 Fountain Head which is now Highland Academy. 00:11:25.77\00:11:28.14 Fountain Head, now I actually worked at 00:11:28.15\00:11:29.72 Fountain Head. Actually Highland Academy 00:11:29.73\00:11:32.32 several years ago. But what did you, 00:11:32.33\00:11:36.44 you know what was unique about Fountain Head 00:11:36.45\00:11:39.01 these units that came out in Madison. 00:11:39.02\00:11:41.06 What was, what type of education did you get? 00:11:41.07\00:11:43.16 I frequently said that I didn't get a lot of 00:11:43.80\00:11:46.50 book learning. I did very poorly in school, 00:11:46.51\00:11:49.95 but I did learn to work. You learned to work? 00:11:49.96\00:11:53.76 I learned to work, okay, and the Lord has bleesed 00:11:53.77\00:11:57.11 my ability to get up and go to work everyday. 00:11:57.12\00:11:59.97 Okay, lets just talk a little bit so, you're a 00:11:59.98\00:12:03.30 retired business man. What was your business? 00:12:03.31\00:12:06.29 We were into nursing home business. 00:12:06.30\00:12:08.09 A nursing home, we had about 2000 beds, 00:12:08.10\00:12:10.52 2000 beds and you recognized the training 00:12:10.53\00:12:13.90 you received from Fountain Head Academy as a 00:12:13.91\00:12:18.73 training that taught you the importance of value 00:12:18.74\00:12:21.71 of the work ethic. I did, now Dr. Sutherland, 00:12:21.72\00:12:25.22 you were talking about this stool of education, 00:12:25.23\00:12:28.17 a three legged, three- legged stool of education. 00:12:28.18\00:12:31.86 And so it was tied around spiritual 00:12:32.58\00:12:36.01 principles to begin with, in order to be a member 00:12:36.02\00:12:39.61 of ASI which was the association of self 00:12:39.62\00:12:43.29 supporting institutions, you had to have an 00:12:43.30\00:12:46.01 institution and that institution had to have 00:12:46.02\00:12:49.05 three major components, really. 00:12:49.06\00:12:51.54 They had to have an agricultural program, 00:12:52.06\00:12:54.53 a medical program and an educational program. 00:12:54.54\00:12:57.95 And if you didn't have those three you were not 00:12:57.96\00:13:00.23 eligible to belong to what was then called, 00:13:00.24\00:13:03.31 early on it was the Laymen's Extension League 00:13:03.32\00:13:05.89 that was before ASI. Now I understand that 00:13:05.90\00:13:09.92 actually your wife Mary Bill attended 00:13:09.93\00:13:13.83 Madison College but what brought her to come to, 00:13:13.84\00:13:17.96 why did she come to Madison to go to school. 00:13:17.97\00:13:20.47 Well her mother was an Adventist, 00:13:20.48\00:13:22.04 her father wasn't. But there was an 00:13:22.05\00:13:25.46 article that came out in the Readers Digest on 00:13:25.47\00:13:28.60 Madison and your ability to be able to go to 00:13:28.61\00:13:30.59 Madison and work your way through school. 00:13:30.60\00:13:32.35 Wow, and her dad was not able to put her in 00:13:32.36\00:13:35.25 college, so she read about this and said hey, 00:13:35.26\00:13:38.37 that the place I go and work my way through 00:13:38.38\00:13:40.05 school. So Mary Bill read in the Readers Digest 00:13:40.06\00:13:43.11 about Madison College and saw an opportunity to 00:13:43.12\00:13:48.16 receive an education even though she didn't have 00:13:48.17\00:13:50.91 the resources, that's right, within college, 00:13:50.92\00:13:52.81 that's right. Well that is impressive, 00:13:52.82\00:13:56.06 now Madison College is located where. 00:13:56.07\00:13:58.44 Well just out in Nashville, oh it's not, 00:13:58.45\00:14:01.05 not two and half hours from here. 00:14:01.06\00:14:02.68 Yeah, just about, yeah okay. 00:14:04.09\00:14:06.35 Now that's the Southern Union, yes. 00:14:06.99\00:14:09.57 And so out of Madison these units came up, 00:14:09.58\00:14:12.55 right, what impact did these units and these 00:14:12.56\00:14:15.57 schools have on the Southern Union. 00:14:15.58\00:14:17.95 When you were growing up as a young person in 00:14:19.54\00:14:22.02 your day, what was the relationship between the 00:14:22.03\00:14:25.41 supporting ministry schools and the church 00:14:25.42\00:14:29.85 schools or the conference led school. 00:14:29.86\00:14:33.92 Well to be honest, they were only to my 00:14:33.93\00:14:35.82 knowledge and I think I am right, 00:14:35.83\00:14:37.29 there were only 2 schools, academies in the 00:14:38.53\00:14:42.88 Southern Union that were operated by the church, 00:14:42.89\00:14:45.20 and that was Collegedale and Forest Lake Academy. 00:14:45.21\00:14:52.36 And that was the only schools that we had with 00:14:52.37\00:14:54.65 academies in the Southern Union, 00:14:54.66\00:14:56.54 and so they there were probably half a dozen self 00:14:56.55\00:14:58.46 supporting schools. Half a dozen self 00:14:58.47\00:15:00.35 supporting schools, can you name a few 00:15:00.36\00:15:02.01 of those? Oh yes, okay, Madison itself had one, 00:15:02.02\00:15:04.61 Madison okay, Fletcher, Pisgah, 00:15:04.62\00:15:08.03 Fountain Head, where I went to school, 00:15:09.02\00:15:11.96 trying to think of the others, 00:15:15.27\00:15:16.62 now Forest Lake Academy, not Forest Lake, 00:15:16.63\00:15:18.84 now Georgia Cumberland, Pine Forest Academy, 00:15:18.85\00:15:20.84 Pine Forest, down in Mississippi, 00:15:20.85\00:15:22.36 Georgia Cumberland head something but I am not 00:15:23.67\00:15:25.32 sure just what it was. Okay, okay, there were 00:15:25.33\00:15:28.44 the Georgia Cumberland Academy is today, 00:15:28.45\00:15:30.68 there was a little school there and a medical 00:15:30.69\00:15:33.03 work there. Now tell me about the personality of 00:15:33.04\00:15:35.50 Dr. Sutherland. You know we hear about 00:15:35.51\00:15:36.80 E.A. Sutherland and his influence on the church 00:15:36.81\00:15:41.19 and on ASI especially because we are a 00:15:41.20\00:15:44.18 product of Dr. Sutherland's 00:15:44.19\00:15:45.67 Madison College program in some ways, 00:15:46.60\00:15:50.14 tell us about his personality what type 00:15:50.60\00:15:52.27 of man was he? He was a very strong 00:15:52.28\00:15:54.20 man in his thinking and he was a thinker. 00:15:54.21\00:15:58.12 He tried to teach other people to think on their 00:15:58.13\00:16:00.23 own and he wanted you to much like I did when 00:16:00.24\00:16:03.19 my children were growing up. 00:16:03.20\00:16:04.62 I wanted them to think for themselves until they 00:16:04.63\00:16:06.82 began to think different then I did. 00:16:06.83\00:16:08.20 Alright, but I didn't like that certainly. 00:16:08.21\00:16:10.42 You told me, you told me that Dr. Sutherland 00:16:10.43\00:16:13.59 had a habit of talking to some young people, 00:16:13.60\00:16:19.32 some of the kids bringing them into his office 00:16:19.33\00:16:22.45 for a conversation. And the young people 00:16:22.46\00:16:25.27 didn't like coming into his office. 00:16:25.28\00:16:27.03 Now tell me about that? Well, I just thinking 00:16:27.04\00:16:29.52 probably about the fact that someone would say 00:16:29.53\00:16:33.26 to someone else Dr. Sutherland looking 00:16:33.27\00:16:35.45 for you, oh yeah, and he said oh sure, 00:16:35.46\00:16:37.66 I know he is but I don't want to see him. 00:16:37.67\00:16:39.34 Yeah. Because, he's going to try to convince 00:16:39.35\00:16:41.97 me what the Lord wants me to do and I don't want 00:16:41.98\00:16:44.87 to do that, so I don't want to see him. 00:16:44.88\00:16:46.52 Right, right, he was a master psychologist, yes, 00:16:46.53\00:16:49.79 he knew how to deal with people. 00:16:49.80\00:16:51.20 Well, well, you know Edwin I really appreciate 00:16:51.21\00:16:55.35 talking to you because I think you are one of 00:16:55.36\00:16:57.10 the few that, that has this personal acquaintance 00:16:57.11\00:17:00.89 with the founder of ASI, Dr. Sutherland. 00:17:00.90\00:17:04.36 It was real privilege to know and I can tell you 00:17:04.37\00:17:06.48 that. And God has blessed us with a 00:17:06.49\00:17:08.40 wonderful history, a wonderful heritage 00:17:08.41\00:17:10.46 and a wonderful opportunity to 00:17:10.47\00:17:13.31 learn from the past as we look toward the future 00:17:13.32\00:17:15.55 to the second coming of Jesus, amen. 00:17:15.56\00:17:17.89 Thank you so much, thank you so much Ron, 00:17:17.90\00:17:20.35 God bless you. 00:17:20.36\00:17:21.33 One of the most exciting things I think about ASI 00:17:29.77\00:17:32.50 is the opportunity that all of us here at this 00:17:32.51\00:17:35.20 convention and also throughout the year 00:17:35.21\00:17:36.83 have in supporting some of the wonderful projects 00:17:36.84\00:17:40.48 that we have all going on as ASI members. 00:17:40.49\00:17:43.66 And one of the those projects is the 00:17:43.67\00:17:45.98 Advent Home that Dr. Blondel Senior runs 00:17:45.99\00:17:49.33 and Dr. Senior would you tell us just a little 00:17:49.34\00:17:52.03 bit what is in case someone doesn't know what 00:17:52.04\00:17:54.28 is the Advent Home? Advent Home is a license 00:17:54.29\00:17:57.94 residential treatment program for boys with 00:17:57.95\00:18:01.45 ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. 00:18:01.46\00:18:05.93 And we take kids with the various types of 00:18:06.58\00:18:08.31 learning problems. Kids who are failing 00:18:08.32\00:18:10.97 in school or about to fail and they come to the 00:18:10.98\00:18:15.06 Advent Home so we can give them a new start. 00:18:15.07\00:18:17.52 This is kind of a unique program. 00:18:17.53\00:18:19.39 Isn't it you actually were able to patent this 00:18:19.40\00:18:21.65 program weren't you. Well yeah we designed it, 00:18:21.66\00:18:23.72 I never liked the word unique but yeah it's 00:18:23.73\00:18:26.51 different, okay, and we cater to a special type 00:18:26.52\00:18:30.96 of need and a special type of students. 00:18:30.97\00:18:33.64 Tell us a little bit about the services that 00:18:33.65\00:18:35.21 Advent Home provides? Well first we provide 00:18:35.22\00:18:37.69 residential care, they come and they 00:18:37.70\00:18:39.45 live in our program like a dormitory. 00:18:39.46\00:18:42.04 And we have what is called a minimum distraction 00:18:42.73\00:18:46.11 environment, that is we remove all the 00:18:46.12\00:18:49.04 distractions like computer games, baggy pants, 00:18:49.05\00:18:53.17 hairdo, drugs, cigarette and girls. 00:18:53.18\00:18:57.43 We provide counseling, we provide group sessions, 00:19:01.03\00:19:04.61 we provide schooling both remedial school and 00:19:05.39\00:19:08.87 accelerated school. We provide a lot of 00:19:08.88\00:19:11.47 tutoring, we provide parents training. 00:19:11.48\00:19:14.22 Work is therapy at the Advent Home and most kids 00:19:15.03\00:19:18.66 come there allergic to work. 00:19:18.67\00:19:20.16 And so we teach them to work and we provide 00:19:20.58\00:19:24.36 community outreach and placement and follow up. 00:19:24.37\00:19:28.27 When our kids are through we place them in the 00:19:28.28\00:19:31.39 school we think they should go to and we follow 00:19:31.40\00:19:33.99 up to see that they continue to be successful. 00:19:34.00\00:19:36.86 You know I was really interested to hear what 00:19:37.56\00:19:39.04 were saying about the different aspects of the 00:19:39.05\00:19:41.27 Advent Home. You know in a lot of ways, 00:19:41.28\00:19:44.05 what you just heard about what constituted self 00:19:44.32\00:19:47.75 supported institutes back years ago is very much 00:19:47.76\00:19:50.87 alive and well at the Advent Home isn't it. 00:19:50.88\00:19:52.99 Yes, yes, we provide schooling, 00:19:53.00\00:19:54.97 we provide work as therapy and we provide various 00:19:54.98\00:20:00.84 types of activities that gets the kids involved 00:20:00.85\00:20:03.85 and they like to work. Work is therapy, right, 00:20:03.86\00:20:06.22 right. Tell us, you received a little bit of 00:20:06.23\00:20:09.78 help from your ASI family and tell us just 00:20:09.79\00:20:13.67 exactly how you're involved in the community 00:20:13.68\00:20:15.51 and what that, those funds went to. 00:20:15.52\00:20:17.60 First, I must say thank you ASI for a grant that 00:20:17.61\00:20:22.17 we received this past year, $10,000 grant to 00:20:22.18\00:20:26.24 help with our community outreach program. 00:20:26.25\00:20:29.92 And at the Advent Home the health message is a 00:20:30.70\00:20:35.29 wedge, there is no doubt, but the health message 00:20:35.30\00:20:38.01 is a very good wedge to get into the community. 00:20:38.02\00:20:40.46 So our boys take a regular class on health. 00:20:41.00\00:20:44.68 And in it they learn lots of things, 00:20:44.69\00:20:46.72 and the teacher Miss Yoins take the kids into 00:20:46.73\00:20:51.05 the community and put into practice what they 00:20:51.06\00:20:53.46 have learned. The first thing we do, 00:20:53.47\00:20:55.77 we conducted a survey in a community in which 00:20:55.78\00:20:59.00 we live. Now there was about maybe 2500 people 00:20:59.01\00:21:02.67 in that little city and we do a survey in terms 00:21:02.68\00:21:06.21 of their needs and we discover that they have 00:21:06.22\00:21:08.74 the same needs like everybody else obesity, 00:21:08.75\00:21:11.61 smoking, drug problems, alcohol and you know 00:21:11.62\00:21:17.44 basic lifestyle problems. And so we designed a 00:21:18.35\00:21:22.57 program, first thing we did, we trained 00:21:22.58\00:21:24.33 the staff. So we went and we got training, CPR, 00:21:24.34\00:21:28.14 crises prevention intervention and other 00:21:28.15\00:21:31.79 types of first aid training. 00:21:31.80\00:21:33.33 And so our staff are certified to conduct these 00:21:33.34\00:21:36.93 types of first aid training and lifestyle 00:21:36.94\00:21:39.54 training. And then we go into the community 00:21:39.55\00:21:42.25 and we conduct health exposes and health 00:21:42.26\00:21:46.72 seminars and we go to the public schools and we 00:21:46.73\00:21:51.31 will conduct seminars in the public schools and 00:21:51.32\00:21:54.10 we have as many as 200 and 400 kids attending 00:21:54.11\00:21:58.06 antismoking, drugs, et cetera, obesity problems 00:21:58.73\00:22:02.49 and they really liked it. And you know what they 00:22:02.50\00:22:05.01 have asked us, they have asked us to comeback 00:22:05.02\00:22:07.09 and make it a regular part of their curriculum in 00:22:07.10\00:22:09.79 public school. And we are working with at least 3 00:22:09.80\00:22:12.25 schools now and several community agencies. 00:22:12.26\00:22:15.79 We even went to Wal-Mart and we thought that 00:22:15.80\00:22:18.66 Wal- Mart was going to put us at some little 00:22:18.67\00:22:20.77 corner on the outside of their store, 00:22:20.78\00:22:22.83 they put us in the center of the store inside 00:22:22.84\00:22:26.71 the store. Now that's unusual, 00:22:26.72\00:22:27.95 can you imagine that, that's unusual, yeah, 00:22:27.96\00:22:29.47 yeah. Now I want to know if those who are 00:22:29.48\00:22:31.81 here and know Advent Home, how many of you were 00:22:31.82\00:22:34.12 aware that they were involved in the community 00:22:34.13\00:22:36.10 in this way. Not very many, yeah. 00:22:36.11\00:22:38.42 Now I thought of Advent Home really as a specific 00:22:38.43\00:22:41.21 need, yes, and I think most people do but it's 00:22:41.22\00:22:43.29 amazing to hear how you been able to reach out to 00:22:43.30\00:22:45.85 the community in this way and ASI has been able 00:22:45.86\00:22:48.22 to help you. Well they, may I just say one thing 00:22:48.23\00:22:50.58 that the myth is that young people with ADHD are 00:22:50.59\00:22:53.96 bad kids, no, they are very, very bright kids. 00:22:53.97\00:22:56.48 Brighter then the average but they learn 00:22:56.49\00:22:58.35 differently, yeah that's true, I can speak from 00:22:58.36\00:23:01.33 experience on that. Let me talk just a little 00:23:01.34\00:23:04.76 bit about something that's near to my heart and 00:23:04.77\00:23:06.74 that is radio, okay radio. Well first it benefits 00:24:08.23\00:24:12.23 our own students. Last year we baptized 19, 00:24:12.24\00:24:14.94 this year we have baptized 8 already, amen. 00:24:15.87\00:24:18.77 We have baptized parents, 00:24:18.78\00:24:20.65 we're sharing information with community on 00:24:23.24\00:24:25.64 health and they are responding positively. 00:24:25.65\00:24:29.01 Thank you so much for being with us and talking 00:24:29.02\00:24:31.10 a little bit about Advent Home. 00:24:31.11\00:24:32.47 We want to also give you the opportunity not just 00:24:32.94\00:24:37.91 to support with your money but also with your 00:24:37.92\00:24:40.39 prayers. Thank you so much for being, thank you. 00:24:40.40\00:24:42.18 Our next person that we want a project, 00:24:43.23\00:24:45.70 that we want to talk about this evening and a 00:24:45.71\00:24:48.24 project that you have been able to help several 00:24:48.25\00:24:49.90 times has been Bill and Lois Dull at the 00:24:49.91\00:24:54.24 Living Springs Overseas Retreats, right, 00:24:54.25\00:24:57.48 Missions. Now tell us just a little bit about 00:24:57.49\00:25:00.72 what you're doing there, where your home is? 00:25:00.73\00:25:04.26 Our home is in India. Okay and how long have 00:25:05.59\00:25:08.55 you been there? For about the last 00:25:08.56\00:25:10.43 14 years we lived full time in India. 00:25:10.44\00:25:12.83 Just what really drew you to go to India? 00:25:13.72\00:25:18.71 We went India 33 years ago, 34 years ago for the 00:25:20.47\00:25:24.88 first time we never could get it off of our mind 00:25:24.89\00:25:27.81 after that and so when the Lord opened the door 00:25:27.82\00:25:31.44 for us to go we went and we moved over and we 00:25:31.45\00:25:34.02 been there ever since. Now I could get you go 00:25:34.03\00:25:37.54 on the stories but tell us what it is that you do 00:25:37.55\00:25:40.08 there in India? We have several 00:25:40.09\00:25:43.55 ministries that we've begun. 00:25:43.56\00:25:45.15 We have two orphanages, we have three Bible 00:25:45.84\00:25:49.76 seminaries and a midwifery training 00:25:49.77\00:25:51.83 school that my wife runs. How many orphan 00:25:51.84\00:25:55.10 children do you have there? 00:25:55.11\00:25:56.08 We have about a 150 children that we care for 00:25:56.09\00:25:59.47 and love and house and feed and cloth and teach 00:25:59.48\00:26:04.90 and train. You got some amazing things that have 00:26:04.91\00:26:08.44 happened over the years. 00:26:08.45\00:26:09.43 Tell us just a little bit about some of the 00:26:09.44\00:26:10.86 changes that you seen in people lives, 00:26:10.87\00:26:13.44 children lives there that you are working with. 00:26:13.45\00:26:15.56 Our children come to us from many different 00:26:16.54\00:26:19.28 backgrounds. From, and are, from unbelievable 00:26:19.29\00:26:28.50 circumstances that I can't take the time to go 00:26:28.51\00:26:31.28 in detail to explain to you but some of them 00:26:31.29\00:26:33.94 have been brutally used. Many of our girls have 00:26:33.95\00:26:37.05 been brutally molested and all and so they when 00:26:37.06\00:26:43.98 they come to our place they need a lot of help. 00:26:43.99\00:26:45.96 But we have seen changes that are 00:26:46.51\00:26:48.44 unbelievable in our children and we've seen 00:26:48.45\00:26:53.31 miracles of God in with the children and I just 00:26:53.32\00:26:57.37 like to share an experience with you. 00:26:57.38\00:26:59.35 We got a girl last summer from a, 00:27:00.43\00:27:04.25 she was taken when she was 11 years old, 00:27:05.56\00:27:07.89 when she was, for two and half years she was 00:27:07.90\00:27:11.48 kidnapped and put into a prostitution center 00:27:11.49\00:27:13.87 and this girl escaped, she made it out to our 00:27:15.01\00:27:22.01 place. Her mother brought her, she was terrified 00:27:22.02\00:27:28.79 when she first came, but her life was totally 00:27:28.80\00:27:32.27 changed. We put her in one of our orphanages 00:27:32.28\00:27:37.84 long ways away so that the people would not come 00:27:37.85\00:27:41.74 to get her. After two months, 00:27:41.75\00:27:44.97 a group came to get her at this place where we 00:27:46.14\00:27:49.46 put here in our orphanage, another orphanage 00:27:49.47\00:27:54.25 that we have. They came to get her, 00:27:54.26\00:27:58.09 a whole gang of them came, they parked their 00:27:58.10\00:28:01.64 vehicles at the end of our road and they started 00:28:01.65\00:28:04.63 walking up the road to our girls dormitory to 00:28:04.64\00:28:08.65 get her. She saw them coming, she panicked, 00:28:08.66\00:28:12.44 she called for one of the other girls. 00:28:12.95\00:28:15.03 They came out they prayed and the people stopped, 00:28:15.60\00:28:23.66 they stood on the road and then they turned 00:28:25.13\00:28:28.83 around and they left, praise God, 00:28:28.84\00:28:33.49 they went about a 1000 feet down the road where 00:28:33.50\00:28:36.53 they can still see the dormitory and they stayed 00:28:36.54\00:28:40.20 there clear into the middle of the night 00:28:40.21\00:28:41.94 and then they left and our girl is safe. 00:28:43.36\00:28:46.99 She is learning to know Jesus, she loves Jesus, 00:28:47.66\00:28:50.11 her whole life has been changed. 00:28:50.12\00:28:51.71 And we just praise God. Amazing story isn't it? 00:28:51.72\00:28:54.73 Well, amen, before we run out of time, 00:28:55.49\00:28:58.95 Sister Lois, can you tell us just a little bit 00:28:58.96\00:29:01.75 about what you are up here for? 00:29:01.76\00:29:03.16 Yes we been working in India for many years 00:29:04.55\00:29:08.55 and just a little over a year ago at the end of 00:29:08.56\00:29:12.09 2005 we began a pilot program to train 00:29:12.10\00:29:17.68 midwifery, to training midwifery, 00:29:17.69\00:29:20.64 midwives and I had 11 midwifery students, 00:29:20.65\00:29:23.93 alright, and we went into the homes, 00:29:23.94\00:29:26.97 we worked in about 10 villages and we just were 00:29:26.98\00:29:32.24 looking to find a way to train these young women 00:29:32.25\00:29:34.75 to save lives. In India a mother dies 00:29:34.76\00:29:39.67 every 5 minutes in the process of gestation and 00:29:39.68\00:29:43.24 child birth. And most of it is totally 00:29:43.25\00:29:46.77 unnecessary, 90 percent of the births are in the 00:29:46.78\00:29:51.32 home and this is a great challenge. 00:29:51.33\00:29:54.26 They have those, most of those babies are born 00:29:54.27\00:29:57.10 by a traditional midwives and we are just giving 00:29:57.11\00:30:02.69 them the skills that they need to monitor the 00:30:02.70\00:30:05.90 baby, monitor the mother, get help when they 00:30:05.91\00:30:09.11 needed and prevent a lot of unnecessary deaths, 00:30:09.12\00:30:13.01 amen. Okay, so that's a service that really 00:30:13.02\00:30:15.64 needed and you are helping people to be able 00:30:15.65\00:30:17.49 to provide that services well. 00:30:17.50\00:30:18.94 Yes, we have the same problems there that you 00:30:18.95\00:30:22.29 have here. Alcohol is rampant in the villages, 00:30:22.30\00:30:25.30 in homes, we deal with a lot of that, 00:30:25.31\00:30:28.94 a lot of mental problems among the mothers. 00:30:28.95\00:30:31.70 We had one mother whose third baby had died 00:30:31.71\00:30:35.27 and she came to us pregnant with her 00:30:35.28\00:30:37.54 fourth and she was very frightened of the witch 00:30:37.55\00:30:43.49 that had bewitched her and caused her third baby 00:30:43.50\00:30:46.11 to die and she wanted to give birth in our little 00:30:46.12\00:30:48.77 clinic. She gave birth in the hospital with a 00:30:48.78\00:30:53.73 cesarean because this fourth baby probably would 00:30:53.74\00:30:56.64 have died also. We were able to detect the 00:30:56.65\00:30:59.23 emergency and she had a cesarean. 00:30:59.24\00:31:03.18 Two days later she ran away from the hospital, 00:31:03.19\00:31:05.66 was scared. We brought her back with us for two 00:31:05.67\00:31:09.28 weeks of recovery and she is now studying to be 00:31:09.29\00:31:12.65 a Christian. When the girls went to study with 00:31:12.66\00:31:15.26 her they were 35 of the people in her village 00:31:15.27\00:31:17.76 waiting to study with them also, amen. 00:31:17.77\00:31:21.45 Now Brother Bill, ASI family was able 00:31:21.46\00:31:23.86 to help you with some projects, 00:31:23.87\00:31:25.01 can you tell us what they were and what you done 00:31:25.02\00:31:26.98 with that? Yes, the last, this last project that 00:31:26.99\00:31:30.68 ASI helped us with was $30,000 for a 00:31:30.69\00:31:35.19 building a vocational arts building in our 00:31:35.20\00:31:38.84 Calcutta orphanage and we, the building is almost 00:31:38.85\00:31:43.27 completed. It's well on its way and we have 00:31:43.28\00:31:48.38 training program for tailoring, for welding, 00:31:48.39\00:31:51.81 carpentry, electrical work, 00:31:52.65\00:31:55.40 electrical motor rewinding, we are teaching 00:31:55.41\00:31:58.05 our children and our seminaries students all of 00:31:58.06\00:32:01.34 the various trades, and agriculture and 00:32:01.35\00:32:06.06 then on the second floor of that building we have 00:32:06.07\00:32:08.24 a housing for staff and workers. 00:32:08.25\00:32:11.61 So we just really want to thank ASI for what you 00:32:11.62\00:32:16.24 have done for us in our projects in India. 00:32:16.25\00:32:19.72 We are completely out of time, yeah, 00:32:19.73\00:32:21.14 and I am so sorry but we will have to wind it up. 00:32:21.15\00:32:22.91 I do appreciate you taking the time to spend with 00:32:23.81\00:32:26.15 us this evening and I know that the family also 00:32:26.16\00:32:28.58 appreciate that as well. Thank you ASI and keep 00:32:29.55\00:32:32.40 praying for these projects. 00:32:32.41\00:32:33.84 Good evening ASI family, it's so exciting to be 00:36:08.56\00:36:11.50 here with you tonight and we have wonderful 00:36:11.51\00:36:14.09 testimonies and who do I have standing with me 00:36:14.10\00:36:16.55 tonight. Janet Fournier from 00:36:16.56\00:36:18.63 Eden Valley Foster Care Mission. 00:36:18.64\00:36:20.82 And Janet, what do you do? 00:36:21.41\00:36:22.95 I work with AIDS orphans in Tanzania, Africa. 00:36:23.34\00:36:26.81 Okay, I think that you have some pictures to 00:36:27.56\00:36:29.96 share with us tonight and some stories? 00:36:29.97\00:36:32.04 Yes, I do. Let's have that first picture, 00:36:32.05\00:36:34.56 okay, that's the, let's start talking about this 00:36:34.57\00:36:41.09 picture that we see on the screen. 00:36:41.10\00:36:42.99 Okay, this is Shamimu and her little brother. 00:36:43.00\00:36:48.07 Shamimu is one of our little orphans and 00:36:48.08\00:36:52.37 actually she has a mother but her father 00:36:53.02\00:36:54.85 has died. Shamimu has come to us, 00:36:54.86\00:36:57.87 actually she ran away from home and came to us 00:36:57.88\00:37:00.65 with wounds on her chest and on her cheek. 00:37:00.66\00:37:05.16 And if you change the picture you will see that 00:37:05.17\00:37:07.99 at her house we've bandaged her and looked 00:37:08.00\00:37:13.22 after her. But we found that this isn't the first 00:37:13.23\00:37:16.40 time that Shamimu has been wounded. 00:37:16.41\00:37:19.59 One time as a baby she fell into the fire and 00:37:19.60\00:37:23.83 her head was burned and so the hair doesn't grow 00:37:23.84\00:37:27.03 on half her head. Then the second time 00:37:27.04\00:37:31.54 she ran away from the home because the workload 00:37:31.55\00:37:35.22 apparently was too heavy and so her mother put 00:37:35.23\00:37:38.88 her feet over the fire so she wouldn't run 00:37:38.89\00:37:41.29 away again. And then this time her mother 00:37:41.30\00:37:44.47 took a stick, a poker out of the fire and burnt 00:37:44.48\00:37:47.47 her on the cheek and on the chest and Shamimu 00:37:47.48\00:37:53.27 ran away and came to our house and you know when 00:37:53.28\00:37:56.52 her mother came to get her, we talked very 00:37:56.53\00:37:58.55 seriously to the mother. And Shamimu had to go 00:37:58.56\00:38:02.85 back with her mother but we would report her 00:38:02.86\00:38:05.74 mother to the authorities so that this could 00:38:05.75\00:38:07.91 never happen again and if it did that we would 00:38:07.92\00:38:10.45 take Shamimu away from her mother. 00:38:10.46\00:38:12.63 And that seems like an awful thing to do but 00:38:13.24\00:38:15.72 under the circumstances it's 00:38:15.73\00:38:18.22 merciful thing to do. Shamimu hung on to 00:38:18.23\00:38:21.15 the bumper of my truck and it took one of the men 00:38:21.16\00:38:25.01 to come and pull her away, to drag her home with 00:38:25.02\00:38:29.13 her mother. This is a terrible thing because 00:38:29.14\00:38:31.73 home should be a place where children love to be, 00:38:31.74\00:38:34.71 amen. Let's go to the next picture. 00:38:34.72\00:38:37.40 And what's this story about? 00:38:37.94\00:38:39.40 This is Tyson, Tyson and his little sister. 00:38:39.78\00:38:42.91 One evening my Bible workers who live in, 00:38:43.64\00:38:46.62 some of them live in the same house as we do. 00:38:46.63\00:38:49.07 He and his wife could hear this baby crying 00:38:49.46\00:38:51.70 around 10 O'clock at night. I want you to know 00:38:51.71\00:38:54.26 that I don't live in hot Africa, 00:38:54.27\00:38:55.95 I live where it's cool and sometimes very frosty. 00:38:55.96\00:38:59.14 And so Tyson with his little sister had been 00:38:59.52\00:39:04.42 chased by their parents, who entered the bar 00:39:04.43\00:39:08.04 because he didn't finish filling the water 00:39:08.05\00:39:10.28 buckets. And Tyson came and tried to sleep on 00:39:10.29\00:39:15.15 our porch, it was freezing cold and Tyson, 00:39:15.16\00:39:20.76 when my Bible workers heard this crying they 00:39:24.51\00:39:27.35 went out to find out what happened and so they 00:39:27.36\00:39:30.31 found them on there, we brought them in, 00:39:30.32\00:39:32.15 we wrapped them in blankets. 00:39:32.16\00:39:33.43 They were frozen and then we went to find their 00:39:33.44\00:39:35.78 parents which were at the bar and then we talked 00:39:35.79\00:39:39.48 to the parents seriously again and Tyson is now a 00:39:39.49\00:39:43.08 happy little boy because his parents don't dare 00:39:43.09\00:39:45.81 do such a thing again, amen. 00:39:45.82\00:39:48.33 Let's go to our next picture, 00:39:48.34\00:39:49.86 what's this about Janet? Oh this is Alex, 00:39:49.87\00:39:52.75 Alex is our newest little guy, Alex, 00:39:52.76\00:39:56.69 he was just a little boy sitting on the road had, 00:39:59.42\00:40:02.91 was picking at his feet, was crying, dirty, 00:40:04.83\00:40:08.22 his feet were bleeding. He had Funzas, 00:40:08.23\00:40:11.03 Funzas is a flea and I will show you in a minute 00:40:11.46\00:40:14.50 what Funzas can do. And anyway I said Twandy 00:40:14.51\00:40:17.92 and so he has come and so I took him by the hand 00:40:17.93\00:40:22.09 and he followed me home, no problem at all. 00:40:22.10\00:40:24.84 Washed him up, his feet and started pulling out 00:40:25.50\00:40:29.72 these Funzas, we can go to the next slide. 00:40:29.73\00:40:32.16 And these Funzas, it's quite painful and so we, 00:40:32.82\00:40:39.49 we got rid of the Funzas and then we went to 00:40:39.50\00:40:41.84 find the family out about the family situation. 00:40:41.85\00:40:45.33 He lives with his grandmother who has 00:40:45.81\00:40:47.59 elephantiasis, elephantiasis, 00:40:47.60\00:40:50.12 she can't work in the fields and do farm work, 00:40:50.50\00:40:52.98 so she is a beggar. And so we talked to this 00:40:52.99\00:40:55.95 grandmother we found her in the bar and said, 00:40:55.96\00:40:59.22 don't you love this boy and she says oh I love 00:40:59.72\00:41:02.07 him very much, but what can I do, 00:41:02.08\00:41:03.98 look at me. And so we said alright, 00:41:03.99\00:41:09.69 we will take Tyson to live with us and she 00:41:10.06\00:41:12.99 agreed. The next day she was there at our fence 00:41:13.00\00:41:15.72 watching in our yard to see how Tyson was doing 00:41:15.73\00:41:18.96 and she walked away because Tyson 00:41:19.43\00:41:21.70 was doing fine. Our carpentry teacher said, 00:41:21.71\00:41:25.08 you know I know one thing for sure that Tyson 00:41:25.09\00:41:28.71 is a very happy little boy since he has moved to 00:41:28.72\00:41:31.38 your place. Okay we have another slide that 00:41:31.39\00:41:33.71 we would like to see and tell us about this one 00:41:33.72\00:41:36.20 Janet. This is Funzas, Funzas is a little flea 00:41:36.21\00:41:39.42 that burrows into the skin. 00:41:39.43\00:41:40.93 It causes deformities. They go deeper and deeper 00:41:40.94\00:41:45.85 and pretty soon some of these kids can't walk. 00:41:45.86\00:41:48.58 It infects the toes, the heels, the fingers, 00:41:48.59\00:41:51.64 you can see it's a horrible thing. 00:41:51.65\00:41:53.72 Oh it looks absolutely painful also. 00:41:54.30\00:41:56.75 Very painful, very painful to take these out. 00:41:56.76\00:41:59.97 Well this is a challenge isn't it. 00:41:59.98\00:42:01.59 It is, it is, we have another slide for you. 00:42:01.60\00:42:04.34 Well this is an exciting slide. 00:42:05.60\00:42:07.07 Yes it is, you know we have a carpentry school, 00:42:07.08\00:42:11.44 we have a sowing school, we have the nursery 00:42:11.45\00:42:13.36 school and now after four years of working in 00:42:13.37\00:42:17.93 Africa with these young people they are just now 00:42:17.94\00:42:21.76 taking their stand for Christ. 00:42:21.77\00:42:23.62 They get 45 minute of Bible studies everyday 00:42:23.97\00:42:28.24 before their classes begin. 00:42:28.25\00:42:30.37 It's such a wonderful thing to see them. 00:42:30.38\00:42:32.70 Well I would like for you to tell our ASI family 00:42:33.54\00:42:36.44 exactly a challenge to us, how we can be involved 00:42:36.45\00:42:41.37 in your project and challenge us Janet. 00:42:41.38\00:42:44.07 You know the passion of my heart is to work with 00:42:44.56\00:42:49.73 these, with these young people and you know 00:42:49.74\00:42:54.55 industry is the tools that we have, 00:42:54.56\00:42:57.58 I am just an old lady. I can do this, 00:42:58.02\00:43:02.54 I've seen the need, I can go and do this. 00:43:02.55\00:43:05.11 How many of you can go out and do this who have 00:43:05.43\00:43:08.11 more life, more youth, more strength. 00:43:08.12\00:43:11.13 Come, help us out there, bring these children 00:43:11.47\00:43:14.59 to Christ. This is what we're there for. 00:43:14.60\00:43:18.22 Thank you Janet so much for sharing with us 00:43:18.89\00:43:21.32 tonight and you will be in our prayers. 00:43:21.33\00:43:23.34 Okay, thank you very much, 00:43:23.35\00:43:24.71 thank you, appreciate it. 00:43:24.72\00:43:26.01 Alright, I have a young man here with me in fact 00:43:32.27\00:43:35.54 I am old enough to be your mother. 00:43:35.55\00:43:37.33 Who do I have with me. My name is Jared Thurmon. 00:43:37.34\00:43:40.26 And where do you come from Jared? 00:43:40.71\00:43:42.33 I am from Marietta, Georgia. 00:43:42.34\00:43:44.04 And tell me a little bit about you? 00:43:44.54\00:43:47.30 I am a newly wed in the past year. 00:43:48.13\00:43:50.94 I went to Adventist schools my whole life. 00:43:51.81\00:43:55.32 I was actually home school as a child and 00:43:55.33\00:43:57.63 loved every minute of that and I went on to 00:43:57.64\00:44:00.55 Southern Adventist University where I 00:44:00.56\00:44:03.16 graduated and I was prepared to be the 00:44:03.17\00:44:06.48 Fortune 500 President that they taught me to be 00:44:06.49\00:44:08.70 and as they do all their business majors. 00:44:08.71\00:44:10.57 And I graduated and got into the workforce, 00:44:11.69\00:44:15.45 that's a little bit about me. 00:44:15.46\00:44:17.16 Well that sounds like a awful lot. 00:44:17.69\00:44:19.01 You told me you had an international business 00:44:19.02\00:44:20.98 degree and you planned on using that, 00:44:20.99\00:44:23.15 is that correct? I did, I had about two books 00:44:23.16\00:44:26.48 hundreds of pages each, with all the ideas in the 00:44:26.49\00:44:28.73 world of how to make a buck. 00:44:28.74\00:44:30.99 Well that's sounds interesting, 00:44:31.53\00:44:32.99 but I think something happened to you, 00:44:33.00\00:44:35.67 can you tell me a little bit about that? 00:44:36.15\00:44:37.66 It did, yeah after a few years working and doing 00:44:37.67\00:44:40.60 the daily grind, I wasn't feeling fulfilled in 00:44:40.61\00:44:43.78 the evening when I would get off work and so 00:44:43.79\00:44:46.93 after that over and over that happened again and 00:44:48.10\00:44:50.29 again, then my dad got sick and when you see 00:44:50.30\00:44:53.61 someone go through an illness and death is at 00:44:53.62\00:44:55.57 the doorstep and make sure reassessing things. 00:44:55.58\00:44:57.65 So that happening and in the midst of that a 00:44:58.61\00:45:00.81 friend calls me and says hey we're going to 00:45:00.82\00:45:02.58 India, we want you to go. And I told him India is 00:45:02.59\00:45:05.73 far away and I have been on mission trips to the 00:45:05.74\00:45:08.26 Caribbean, Mexico but India is just a long way. 00:45:08.27\00:45:10.20 He says come on we are going for three and half 00:45:10.21\00:45:11.41 weeks with ShareHim we need you to go. 00:45:11.42\00:45:13.37 So I went with him and that's when the turn 00:45:14.45\00:45:17.25 started. The turn started in India, 00:45:19.68\00:45:20.65 did you go once or twice to India? 00:45:20.66\00:45:21.63 I went once and then he says hey we are going 00:45:21.64\00:45:23.14 back in about six more months, 00:45:23.15\00:45:24.37 so we went back to India and upon coming home 00:45:24.38\00:45:27.77 I said you know there is just something about 00:45:27.78\00:45:29.94 that call Jesus made to the men to say hey, 00:45:29.95\00:45:32.11 leave the boat in the water and follow Me. 00:45:32.12\00:45:33.56 And I couldn't give my allegiance to work and 00:45:34.12\00:45:38.17 ministry, so I decided to take the latter out. 00:45:38.18\00:45:41.09 So instead of fishing for business, 00:45:41.10\00:45:43.83 you it sounds like to me that you started 00:45:43.84\00:45:46.17 thinking about fishing for souls. 00:45:46.18\00:45:48.00 I did, I did, I started thinking how could we 00:45:48.01\00:45:51.18 apply business skills to a ministry. 00:45:51.19\00:45:54.62 And so as I started to think of all the things in 00:45:55.00\00:45:57.16 the world that I enjoy and do, 00:45:57.17\00:45:58.49 the Internet is involved with, heavily with that. 00:45:58.50\00:46:01.09 So I decided to start a website and call it 00:46:01.10\00:46:03.95 Presenttruth.com. So what got you interested 00:46:03.96\00:46:07.64 in doing this website? What's out there that we 00:46:07.65\00:46:11.02 need this new website of yours? 00:46:11.03\00:46:13.12 Seeing that the Internet is something that 00:46:13.85\00:46:15.56 changes every second. This website we've created 00:46:15.57\00:46:18.57 is something that we have the frame work where 00:46:18.58\00:46:20.79 anybody and everybody can come and gain free 00:46:20.80\00:46:23.16 resources that will equip them to be a better 00:46:23.17\00:46:25.52 witness to the world around us. 00:46:25.53\00:46:27.50 And it is an Adventist focus site, 00:46:27.51\00:46:29.11 so it is Adventist material, free sermons, 00:46:29.57\00:46:32.28 free study resources, free videos, lots of free 00:46:32.29\00:46:36.31 things which free is always a good so, 00:46:36.32\00:46:38.40 that's where we focused. 00:46:38.41\00:46:39.38 And is this for everybody? 00:46:39.39\00:46:41.10 This is for everybody, every age group. 00:46:41.78\00:46:43.37 We have some big ideas and we actually have some 00:46:43.38\00:46:46.29 multi language platforms we're trying to plan 00:46:46.30\00:46:48.68 for, because not everyone speaks English in the 00:46:48.69\00:46:50.54 world so. So this is really new, 00:46:50.55\00:46:52.89 do you have other people working with you? 00:46:52.90\00:46:54.94 We do, I am blessed to have hired someone in very 00:46:54.95\00:46:58.26 recent past and I have a number of people 00:46:58.27\00:47:01.06 volunteering to help me out and they brought 00:47:01.07\00:47:03.02 into this vision which we are staying up very 00:47:03.03\00:47:05.63 many late nights preparing for today, 00:47:05.64\00:47:08.00 which is our official launch. 00:47:08.01\00:47:09.07 So did it launch today? 00:47:09.08\00:47:10.59 It did, oh congratulations, 00:47:10.60\00:47:12.90 and how exciting. Now I know having a 00:47:12.91\00:47:15.81 son close to your age that when you go to college 00:47:15.82\00:47:18.86 you are thinking about your career. 00:47:18.87\00:47:21.54 And it's very important that you follow your 00:47:24.06\00:47:25.03 career, but I see that Jesus had something else 00:47:25.04\00:47:26.92 in mind for you. Could you challenge our 00:47:26.93\00:47:28.90 ASI family and youth around the world of 00:47:28.91\00:47:32.22 how they could be involved in doing something for 00:47:32.23\00:47:34.55 Jesus? I would love to say something, 00:47:34.56\00:47:37.17 if you look at the world around you Jesus is 00:47:38.12\00:47:41.18 coming. And the motto to tell them now, 00:47:41.19\00:47:43.85 I have taken that personally tell me now. 00:47:44.33\00:47:46.41 Get into the Bible everyday, the world is 00:47:46.87\00:47:49.86 starving for this gospel that I believe 00:47:49.87\00:47:52.38 Adventists have a special burden to preach. 00:47:52.39\00:47:54.59 And so to young people, old people everyone we 00:47:54.60\00:47:57.02 have family members maybe that aren't in the 00:47:57.03\00:47:58.84 church anymore. We have people that we work 00:47:58.85\00:48:02.14 with that need to hear this and this, 00:48:02.15\00:48:04.69 this sweet message that we have is something 00:48:04.70\00:48:08.96 that I believe is growing very rapidly right now 00:48:08.97\00:48:12.52 and if you, I guess required in your life 00:48:12.53\00:48:15.15 like I am trying to be in listening people. 00:48:15.16\00:48:17.99 The thing is stirring and if I could I love to 00:48:18.00\00:48:20.52 read something that was the tipping point of 00:48:20.53\00:48:22.39 encouragement for me. We would love to hear 00:48:22.40\00:48:25.05 what was so encouraging to you. 00:48:25.06\00:48:27.54 This is from Testimonies volume 7 page 249 00:48:28.88\00:48:32.25 it says, at this time God's cause is in need of 00:48:32.26\00:48:35.27 men and women who posses rare qualifications and 00:48:35.28\00:48:38.72 good administrative powers. Men and women who 00:48:38.73\00:48:41.75 will make patient thorough investigation of the 00:48:41.76\00:48:44.79 need of the work in various fields. 00:48:44.80\00:48:46.93 Those who have a large capacity for work, 00:48:47.63\00:48:49.71 those who posses warm, kind hearts, cool heads, 00:48:50.11\00:48:53.72 sound sense and unbiased judgment. 00:48:53.73\00:48:56.88 Those who are sanctified by the spirit of God and 00:48:57.28\00:49:00.10 can fearlessly say no or yeah and amen to 00:49:00.11\00:49:03.84 propositions. Those who have strong convictions, 00:49:03.85\00:49:07.30 clear understanding and pure sympathetic hearts, 00:49:07.31\00:49:10.29 those who practice the words all ye are brethren, 00:49:10.30\00:49:13.79 those who strive to uplift and restore fallen 00:49:13.80\00:49:16.75 humanity, amen. Well you know Jared, 00:49:16.76\00:49:20.59 you will be in our prayers, let's pray for 00:49:20.60\00:49:23.11 Jared and his ministry and God bless you as you 00:49:23.12\00:49:26.75 continue working for Him, thank you, 00:49:26.76\00:49:28.88 thank you for sharing. 00:49:28.89\00:49:29.99 I want you to put on your seat belts, 00:49:39.60\00:49:42.11 because we are in for one fast paced interview. 00:49:42.12\00:49:47.87 Who do I have here with me tonight? 00:49:48.28\00:49:49.73 Brenda Silva from Greeneville, Tennessee. 00:49:49.74\00:49:52.36 From Greeneville, Tennessee and we are 00:49:52.37\00:49:54.68 excited you're here. Brenda, thank you, 00:49:54.69\00:49:56.11 I want you to tell us, our family how your team 00:49:56.12\00:49:59.07 began their ministry. Well most of you know in 00:49:59.08\00:50:02.25 2004 the movie the Passion of Christ came out. 00:50:02.26\00:50:05.45 There was such a phenomenal interest 00:50:05.46\00:50:07.73 created from that movie that many hearts were 00:50:07.74\00:50:10.20 more receptive at that time to hear about Jesus. 00:50:10.21\00:50:13.35 Well I believe that God wanted to take advantage 00:50:13.74\00:50:16.13 of that opportunity. Well as a result of that 00:50:16.14\00:50:18.91 movie, Remnant Publications came out with 00:50:18.92\00:50:21.31 the movie Passion of Love. God moved on our 00:50:21.32\00:50:24.90 hearts to take those books to Thunder Over 00:50:24.91\00:50:28.90 Louisville, an event which draws between 250 to 00:50:28.91\00:50:32.67 500,000 people during Derby week. 00:50:32.68\00:50:35.82 That day nine of us, mostly family passed out 00:50:36.27\00:50:41.37 4000 books, amen. We developed such a passion 00:50:41.38\00:50:46.20 for going to events that attracted large numbers, 00:50:46.21\00:50:49.56 masses of people. Well, on the way home from 00:50:49.57\00:50:52.64 Louisville that day I believe God gave us a 00:50:52.65\00:50:55.65 vision to go to Bristol Motor Speedway on race 00:50:55.66\00:51:00.32 weekend to pass out the book, 00:51:00.33\00:51:02.93 Race to Victory Lane. This event attracts a 00:51:02.94\00:51:07.84 165,000 people. This also coincided with an 00:51:07.85\00:51:14.70 upcoming evangelistic meeting that 00:51:14.71\00:51:16.90 Pastor John Earnhardt was having in our church 00:51:16.91\00:51:19.26 in Greeneville, Tennessee. You know in Evangelism 00:51:19.27\00:51:23.18 page 35 and 36 it says that we to have to device, 00:51:23.19\00:51:27.41 we have to device new methods to attract people 00:51:27.42\00:51:31.06 where they are, go to them where they are. 00:51:31.07\00:51:34.35 And I believe that's what God has put on our 00:51:34.36\00:51:36.69 hearts and that's what we are doing, amen. 00:51:36.70\00:51:39.58 Tara, tell us some of the miracles that have 00:51:40.47\00:51:46.07 happened during your ministry and tell us who 00:51:46.08\00:51:48.81 you are also. I am Tara Cohen, 00:51:48.82\00:51:50.72 I am her daughter and I am going to run through 00:51:50.73\00:51:53.32 for it real quick, the first one is you just 00:51:53.33\00:51:56.15 don't get into Bristol Motor Speedway. 00:51:56.16\00:51:58.42 And from the very beginning God gave 00:51:58.98\00:52:00.75 us favor with the director of Raceway Ministries 00:52:00.76\00:52:03.38 which is predominantly run by the Baptist church. 00:52:03.39\00:52:06.21 One of the most important privileges that we were 00:52:06.59\00:52:08.87 given was that he allowed us to bring our own 00:52:08.88\00:52:11.49 books in to pass out. They had never done that 00:52:11.50\00:52:14.98 before, that second thing we needed a place to 00:52:14.99\00:52:18.21 stay. God opened the door up for us to have 00:52:18.22\00:52:22.50 a nice Christian home. To go one mile from the 00:52:22.51\00:52:26.35 racetrack and we were able to keep coming back 00:52:26.36\00:52:28.28 and forth very fast. The third is we needed 00:52:28.29\00:52:32.40 books; we didn't have anything to pass out. 00:52:32.41\00:52:34.76 By faith we ordered 20,000 books, 00:52:34.77\00:52:38.49 in two weeks $24,000 was raised. 00:52:38.50\00:52:42.84 I can't tell you how awesome that is. 00:52:42.85\00:52:44.69 The fourth thing is a, we were told from the 00:52:45.27\00:52:47.63 beginning that we only had one shot at giving 00:52:47.64\00:52:50.91 our books out. That was it, 00:52:50.92\00:52:52.58 we were not going to be able to do it at any more 00:52:52.59\00:52:54.19 races. When the race was over the director asked 00:52:54.20\00:52:58.45 us to bring our books back for the next race and 00:52:58.46\00:53:01.96 since then the door has been wide open to get our 00:53:01.97\00:53:04.74 stuff in. God is awesome, 00:53:04.75\00:53:07.11 praise the Lord, how exciting. 00:53:07.12\00:53:09.61 And Patti, tell us who you are and tell us 00:53:10.77\00:53:14.07 what has happened since Bristol. 00:53:14.08\00:53:16.32 My name is Patti Cohen and I am Tara's 00:53:16.33\00:53:18.67 mother-in-law and God is, God is so good he is 00:53:18.68\00:53:23.97 opened so many doors since this first race has 00:53:23.98\00:53:27.84 taken place. When we got home, 00:53:27.85\00:53:29.56 the very first thing that stated happening was 00:53:29.57\00:53:32.38 our phones began to ring off the hook with Sunday 00:53:32.39\00:53:35.52 school teachers and ministers from Sunday 00:53:35.53\00:53:38.87 keeping church is calling and wanting this book 00:53:38.88\00:53:42.41 to pass out to their classes and their 00:53:42.42\00:53:45.32 churches. We began, or Pastor Earnhardt 00:53:45.33\00:53:48.68 began getting calls from ministers in different 00:53:48.69\00:53:52.69 areas wanting him to come and minister. 00:53:52.70\00:53:55.66 The doors to racetracks all through the south 00:53:55.98\00:53:59.27 have opened up for him to be able to minister 00:53:59.28\00:54:02.06 in that have been closed and its only God that 00:54:02.07\00:54:04.54 has opened these doors. He's been called to 00:54:04.55\00:54:07.10 Charlotte, he's been called to Darlington, 00:54:07.11\00:54:09.37 he's been called to Talladega, 00:54:09.38\00:54:11.47 he has been also called to Daytona. 00:54:11.48\00:54:14.18 God is opening these doors for him to be able 00:54:14.19\00:54:17.24 to minister to all of these race fans across 00:54:17.25\00:54:20.84 America because of this little book that has been 00:54:20.85\00:54:24.88 written. Amen, your enthusiasm and 00:54:24.89\00:54:28.02 excitement is contagious. In the spring of this 00:54:28.03\00:54:33.11 year God called Pastor Earnhardt to come over 00:54:33.12\00:54:37.54 to Talladega through a Baptist minister and he 00:54:37.55\00:54:40.95 called then he said, I want you to come and I 00:54:40.96\00:54:43.30 want you to speak to the people in the 00:54:43.31\00:54:45.64 campground. And Pastor Earnhardt said I can't 00:54:45.65\00:54:48.19 do that. He said I will be in the middle of an 00:54:48.20\00:54:50.63 evangelistic meeting and so he said well, 00:54:50.64\00:54:53.89 we happen to have a man in our congregation that 00:54:53.90\00:54:57.95 has his own airplane and he will fly over, 00:54:57.96\00:55:01.25 over to South Carolina, pick you up, fly you in, 00:55:01.26\00:55:05.46 so that you can speak and fly you back home. 00:55:05.47\00:55:08.40 So you will be there to preach to your people. 00:55:08.41\00:55:11.45 Amen, that's what happened. Our family and a 00:55:11.46\00:55:15.70 couple of other church members in Greenville, 00:55:15.71\00:55:18.12 we packed up Tara and Steve's van, we went over 00:55:18.13\00:55:22.44 and we ministered for two days on Sabbath and 00:55:22.45\00:55:25.22 Sunday in this campgrounds passing out this book 00:55:25.23\00:55:28.86 we blanketed those campgrounds and Pastor 00:55:28.87\00:55:32.24 John came over and he told his testimony. 00:55:32.25\00:55:35.35 We have been invited to go back and minister in 00:55:35.36\00:55:38.36 those same campgrounds next fall. 00:55:38.37\00:55:41.37 This coming fall in October and along with 00:55:41.38\00:55:44.68 that we have been given the opportunity to 00:55:44.69\00:55:46.89 minister in one of 12 campgrounds over at 00:55:46.90\00:55:50.88 Bristol. Our little group and our church has been 00:55:50.89\00:55:54.75 called to minister in one of those campgrounds, 00:55:54.76\00:55:57.87 it's called Hillandale that will take place in 00:55:57.88\00:56:01.09 three weeks from this weekend and we are so 00:56:01.10\00:56:04.36 excited. Pastor Earnhardt is coming once again 00:56:04.37\00:56:07.85 and he is going to be ministering to the people 00:56:07.86\00:56:10.66 there again. And so please keep us in 00:56:10.67\00:56:13.59 your prayer. God has called each 00:56:13.60\00:56:16.12 and every one of us, every one of us to be 00:56:16.13\00:56:19.34 ministers of the gospel and in doing that it 00:56:19.35\00:56:23.33 doesn't matter what he asked you to do. 00:56:23.34\00:56:26.65 What he lays on your heart, 00:56:26.66\00:56:28.10 don't say this is too big for me to do. 00:56:28.11\00:56:30.87 Because God can do anything, 00:56:30.88\00:56:33.17 think out of the box. We are Out of the Box 00:56:33.18\00:56:38.03 Ministry for God. Thank you and praise the Lord. 00:56:38.04\00:56:41.65
