00:07:11.99\00:07:13.46 But that's why I sing, I sing because 00:07:13.50\00:07:15.76 Christ has made me free. 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.13 I sing because 00:07:18.17\00:07:20.20 that's what I've spent my whole life doing. 00:07:20.24\00:07:22.87 I can't think of a time 00:07:22.90\00:07:24.47 that singing wasn't a part of my life 00:07:24.51\00:07:26.78 or music was not a part of my life. 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.74 And I know that's 00:07:28.78\00:07:30.11 because of my parents and their influence. 00:07:30.15\00:07:33.28 But I also believe that's just the way God designed me 00:07:33.31\00:07:35.85 to understand my world. 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.22 I'd go out in the woods and sing to myself 00:07:38.25\00:07:40.42 and sing to the birds, 00:07:40.46\00:07:41.79 and my mother still laughs at me 00:07:41.82\00:07:43.69 going out and talking and singing to the tulips 00:07:43.73\00:07:46.19 to make them grow. 00:07:46.23\00:07:48.10 I think she did that 00:07:48.13\00:07:49.46 so that I'd stay out of the house. 00:07:49.50\00:07:52.00 But anyway, I enjoyed it, I guess. 00:07:52.03\00:07:55.70 I did, I sang to the cows and everything that came by, 00:07:55.74\00:07:59.11 but I grew up because my father loved music so much 00:07:59.14\00:08:04.35 and my mother as well, 00:08:04.38\00:08:05.88 but my father was the one 00:08:05.91\00:08:07.25 who really appreciated 00:08:07.28\00:08:08.62 so many different styles of music 00:08:08.65\00:08:10.22 and exposed us to so many things 00:08:10.25\00:08:12.49 and I know in course he's gonna watch this 00:08:12.52\00:08:15.32 at some point I'm sure, but I know he wishes 00:08:15.36\00:08:18.26 that I would have been better at bluegrass 00:08:18.29\00:08:19.93 and I never picked up on that poor thing, poor dad. 00:08:19.96\00:08:24.07 I'm sorry, dad, you know. 00:08:24.10\00:08:27.44 But why, why is music so important to all of us, 00:08:27.47\00:08:32.27 whether you're singing professionally as I do, 00:08:32.31\00:08:35.24 or whether you're just playing it 00:08:35.28\00:08:36.75 on your radio in your car, 00:08:36.78\00:08:38.55 or playing an instrument, 00:08:38.58\00:08:41.08 however, music is a part of your life 00:08:41.12\00:08:43.49 and even if it's just when you go to church 00:08:43.52\00:08:45.32 and sing with the choir or sing in the congregation, 00:08:45.35\00:08:49.09 why is music so important to us? 00:08:49.12\00:08:51.59 And what does music do in our lives to create quality? 00:08:51.63\00:08:59.53 And this is I think... 00:08:59.57\00:09:01.97 These are questions that I believe 00:09:02.00\00:09:03.64 we will continue to research and try to understand, 00:09:03.67\00:09:07.41 as long as we're on this earth, 00:09:07.44\00:09:08.78 because music is absolutely incredible. 00:09:08.81\00:09:12.05 There are so many things that we don't understand 00:09:12.08\00:09:14.02 that we believe happen when we're listening to music 00:09:14.05\00:09:17.49 or creating music but only until 00:09:17.52\00:09:21.22 even just the last decade, there were not ways 00:09:21.26\00:09:24.03 that we could research that, monitor that or qualify it 00:09:24.06\00:09:29.83 or quantify it in very scientific 00:09:29.86\00:09:33.47 or reasonable ways. 00:09:33.50\00:09:35.37 And it's exciting to me that technology 00:09:35.40\00:09:37.37 is starting to catch up with what we've believed 00:09:37.41\00:09:39.71 was happening with music and it's actually showing us 00:09:39.74\00:09:42.44 these things are true. 00:09:42.48\00:09:44.91 And, of course, that's what the musical mind is about, 00:09:44.95\00:09:47.22 I try to get my hands on research 00:09:47.25\00:09:48.82 as much as I can and just give you 00:09:48.85\00:09:51.15 little nuggets to keep reminding you 00:09:51.19\00:09:53.42 how important music can be in your life 00:09:53.46\00:09:55.16 and the things that it can do to help improve 00:09:55.19\00:09:58.66 whatever it is you need to improve in your life. 00:09:58.69\00:10:00.73 Now, that's not to say that music's an end of itself, 00:10:00.76\00:10:03.97 or it can do everything we think it might can do, 00:10:04.00\00:10:06.57 but we're going to keep looking and see, 00:10:06.60\00:10:08.70 because I have seen and read so many instances 00:10:08.74\00:10:13.88 of people who are recovering from major things 00:10:13.91\00:10:18.01 such as strokes and other illnesses, 00:10:18.05\00:10:20.92 because of music's influence, 00:10:20.95\00:10:22.88 babies who go from the brink of death 00:10:22.92\00:10:25.62 to life because of a song. 00:10:25.65\00:10:28.72 So there's many reasons why I think 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.83 music is affecting us in many ways, 00:10:30.86\00:10:32.93 but we have yet to know all those reasons. 00:10:32.96\00:10:36.63 And it's such a vast amount of knowledge, 00:10:36.67\00:10:40.80 I didn't even know where to start for a seminar 00:10:40.84\00:10:42.64 like this with you and so what I had to do is, 00:10:42.67\00:10:45.57 ask me some questions, 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.04 and there were a few of you that filled out 00:10:47.08\00:10:49.44 some little cards and asked specific questions 00:10:49.48\00:10:52.01 on aspects maybe in your life, 00:10:52.05\00:10:54.48 you're trying to figure out how music can help you. 00:10:54.52\00:10:56.28 And so I thought I would start by answering those 00:10:56.32\00:10:59.02 and if we get through all of those, 00:10:59.05\00:11:00.96 we'll move on to a few other things 00:11:00.99\00:11:02.66 and hopefully, I'll touch on some topics 00:11:02.69\00:11:05.89 that matter in your life in ways 00:11:05.93\00:11:08.23 that you can find to use music in a better way, 00:11:08.26\00:11:11.00 or a way that you can simply understand 00:11:11.03\00:11:14.07 how music can be a wonderful tool 00:11:14.10\00:11:16.10 for you in your daily life. 00:11:16.14\00:11:18.34 It might even help you clean the house 00:11:18.37\00:11:19.87 or something like that, you know, 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.24 hey, if it'll help do that, I'm there. 00:11:21.28\00:11:24.21 But okay, so I'm just going to jump into this. 00:11:24.25\00:11:28.45 Here's the first one. 00:11:28.48\00:11:29.82 What's a good age for a child to start piano lessons, 00:11:29.85\00:11:32.95 and how long or frequent should practices be? 00:11:32.99\00:11:38.39 Oh, somebody's laughing already on that one. 00:11:38.43\00:11:41.10 Yeah, well, a good age 00:11:41.13\00:11:42.90 for a child to start piano there is, 00:11:42.93\00:11:45.77 I'd say probably the most common answer 00:11:45.80\00:11:49.57 to that is age 6 to 10, 00:11:49.60\00:11:51.91 is probably what most people will say. 00:11:51.94\00:11:54.08 Those who are promoters of the Suzuki method, 00:11:54.11\00:11:57.85 and if you're not familiar with that method, 00:11:57.88\00:11:59.48 just do a real quick search or ask a few questions 00:11:59.51\00:12:02.58 from a music person and they will fill you 00:12:02.62\00:12:04.65 and I won't take time here. 00:12:04.69\00:12:06.02 But Suzuki method is by rote. 00:12:06.05\00:12:08.32 It's a young child learning to do a musical skill 00:12:08.36\00:12:12.39 by watching an adult or their parent, ideally. 00:12:12.43\00:12:15.46 And Suzuki method usually will say 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.40 even three or four is a good time to start. 00:12:17.43\00:12:20.54 And so if you're going to start your child in piano, 00:12:20.57\00:12:23.00 and you feel that their personality 00:12:23.04\00:12:26.81 and their interest is there to begin starting music, 00:12:26.84\00:12:31.98 you can start them as early as three and four, 00:12:32.01\00:12:33.68 if you start them in a Suzuki type program. 00:12:33.72\00:12:36.35 If you're starting in a more traditional 00:12:36.38\00:12:38.55 piano instruction method, 00:12:38.59\00:12:41.96 I would go for five or six as the earliest. 00:12:41.99\00:12:44.89 And for those of you that are wondering 00:12:44.93\00:12:47.10 how late you can start piano lessons, 00:12:47.13\00:12:50.30 you can start anytime in your life, honestly. 00:12:50.33\00:12:54.00 And you should, you know, there's a lot of research 00:12:54.04\00:12:56.40 out there on senior citizens who began taking piano 00:12:56.44\00:13:00.68 even after some major illnesses or some major difficulties 00:13:00.71\00:13:04.25 with hand movement. 00:13:04.28\00:13:06.28 Oh, my, and piano has been a wonderful thing for them. 00:13:06.31\00:13:08.78 It's been a great way for them to express themselves 00:13:08.82\00:13:10.99 and to gain dexterity, and to simply enjoy 00:13:11.02\00:13:14.59 yet another new hobby. 00:13:14.62\00:13:15.96 So don't be afraid to start it later. 00:13:15.99\00:13:17.83 If you didn't start when you're five, 00:13:17.86\00:13:19.19 it's still okay. 00:13:19.23\00:13:20.56 All right, you can start. 00:13:20.60\00:13:22.50 Now as far as when to practice? 00:13:22.53\00:13:25.40 I took violin, that was probably 00:13:25.43\00:13:27.80 my main instrument growing up, 00:13:27.84\00:13:29.84 and I did take the Suzuki method with violin, 00:13:29.87\00:13:33.07 and I had a teacher who would quote 00:13:33.11\00:13:36.04 the master Suzuki to me and his most famous quote is, 00:13:36.08\00:13:40.22 you only need to practice on the days that you eat. 00:13:40.25\00:13:46.69 So there you go, 00:13:46.72\00:13:48.46 there's your answer for that one. 00:13:48.49\00:13:51.16 All right. 00:13:51.19\00:13:53.03 Let's see. 00:13:53.06\00:13:54.56 Okay, now are you game to do a little bit, 00:13:54.60\00:13:57.50 this is more of a classroom environment for me, 00:13:57.53\00:13:59.37 and you're okay with us doing that, right? 00:13:59.40\00:14:02.97 You know, camera might end up on you, is that okay? 00:14:03.00\00:14:06.31 Because I would just assume they take the cameras off me 00:14:06.34\00:14:08.41 at this point right now. 00:14:08.44\00:14:11.51 And I'm not sure I'm going to be able to show you 00:14:11.55\00:14:13.28 everything as well with this baby kicking me. 00:14:13.31\00:14:17.85 But we're going to try it, 00:14:17.89\00:14:19.59 I'm going to give you some examples here. 00:14:19.62\00:14:21.39 How old is too old to take vocal lessons is the question. 00:14:21.42\00:14:25.36 I love to sing, but was told by a musician 00:14:25.39\00:14:27.30 I had a raw talent, is that bad or good? 00:14:27.33\00:14:33.07 I don't know. 00:14:33.10\00:14:34.44 Let me hear you sing and we'll find out. 00:14:34.47\00:14:35.97 No, raw talent usually, I would assume that 00:14:36.00\00:14:39.04 that's a description of saying that 00:14:39.07\00:14:40.41 there you have a talent within you, 00:14:40.44\00:14:42.91 that just with a little training 00:14:42.94\00:14:44.31 would focus itself and you would have 00:14:44.35\00:14:46.31 even greater communication ability. 00:14:46.35\00:14:48.78 And another question that came in along that line, 00:14:48.82\00:14:51.32 you know, how old is too old to take voice lessons? 00:14:51.35\00:14:53.79 And oh, no, I guess that's separate, 00:14:53.82\00:14:56.52 how to improve your normal speaking voice? 00:14:56.56\00:14:59.39 Let's deal with how old is too old 00:14:59.43\00:15:00.93 to take vocal lessons? 00:15:00.96\00:15:02.30 You know, I've taught... 00:15:06.53\00:15:08.24 The bulk of my teaching was high school students 00:15:08.27\00:15:10.71 but there were also 00:15:10.74\00:15:12.07 when I was at the Community Arts Center, 00:15:12.11\00:15:13.51 I oversaw everything from pre K, 00:15:13.54\00:15:18.08 kindergarten grades, up through 00:15:18.11\00:15:21.95 I think the oldest student I had in voice was mid 70s, 00:15:21.98\00:15:25.75 probably. 00:15:25.79\00:15:28.36 I don't think that there ever is a time 00:15:28.39\00:15:30.09 that you're too old to have lessons 00:15:30.13\00:15:33.70 because it will help stabilize the mechanism, 00:15:33.73\00:15:37.90 the purpose that might be an issue to have at hand 00:15:37.93\00:15:44.11 and to be concerned with a little bit. 00:15:44.14\00:15:46.21 If you're thinking at 60 that you want to go into opera, 00:15:46.24\00:15:51.21 you're beyond the prime, that's just a fact, okay, 00:15:51.25\00:15:54.35 and now you laugh a little bit, but now if you're in your 50s, 00:15:54.38\00:15:56.89 you might not be. 00:15:56.92\00:15:58.85 There're actually some muscular things 00:15:58.89\00:16:01.22 that happen as we age, 00:16:01.26\00:16:03.12 and some things actually improve with age, 00:16:03.16\00:16:07.53 the voice is one of them. 00:16:07.56\00:16:08.93 So don't be afraid if you're 70 to take up voice lessons, 00:16:08.96\00:16:12.13 but I would consider why you're doing it. 00:16:12.17\00:16:15.00 I would do it to help improve your communication skill, 00:16:15.04\00:16:17.67 maybe to sing some songs for church 00:16:17.71\00:16:20.11 but you don't want to overtax yourself. 00:16:20.14\00:16:22.71 Your voice just simply does not have the flexibility 00:16:22.74\00:16:25.65 it did when you were younger. 00:16:25.68\00:16:27.92 And as far as a raw talent, get with an instructor, 00:16:27.95\00:16:31.75 I still see an instructor every now and then. 00:16:31.79\00:16:33.76 And the reason being every single stage of my life, 00:16:33.79\00:16:36.83 my voice is different, you know, every new thing, 00:16:36.86\00:16:40.10 even the weather changes your voice. 00:16:40.13\00:16:41.56 So, you know, it's nice to have somebody 00:16:41.60\00:16:43.37 that you pay to tell you when you sound bad, 00:16:43.40\00:16:46.57 and how to change that. 00:16:46.60\00:16:48.50 All right, you don't just want anybody on the street 00:16:48.54\00:16:50.81 telling you how you sing but... 00:16:50.84\00:16:52.57 And then kind of related with the whole vocal thing 00:16:52.61\00:16:55.54 is how to improve your normal speaking voice 00:16:55.58\00:16:58.45 and be able to sing better? 00:16:58.48\00:17:00.38 Basically, they're asking how can you use your diaphragm? 00:17:00.42\00:17:05.69 And that is a key thing. 00:17:05.72\00:17:07.16 You know what I'm talking about with the diaphragm, don't you? 00:17:07.19\00:17:10.36 Singing does not happen here. 00:17:10.39\00:17:12.46 Singing happens in the motor down here 00:17:12.49\00:17:16.67 and in the resonator up here, okay? 00:17:16.70\00:17:18.97 Your vocal cords are like a reed 00:17:19.00\00:17:21.57 on a clarinet or on an oboe. 00:17:21.60\00:17:23.97 So what you're trying to do 00:17:24.01\00:17:25.44 when you're trying to get a better speaking voice 00:17:25.47\00:17:27.38 or better singing voice is you're actually 00:17:27.41\00:17:29.58 trying to take the pressure off larynx 00:17:29.61\00:17:32.25 and you're trying to find the natural resonation 00:17:32.28\00:17:34.92 in your head 00:17:34.95\00:17:36.28 that is the most beautiful for you. 00:17:36.32\00:17:38.55 And the best singers in the world, just so, 00:17:38.59\00:17:41.36 you know, they have more holes in their head 00:17:41.39\00:17:43.22 than anybody else, 00:17:43.26\00:17:44.73 okay, that's true, it's just a physiological fact. 00:17:44.76\00:17:48.36 You've heard people say chest voice and head voice, 00:17:48.40\00:17:51.10 well, these are the places where we resonate. 00:17:51.13\00:17:55.87 And the real key even if you take a breath 00:17:55.90\00:17:58.01 completely properly, 00:17:58.04\00:17:59.67 if you're not placing the sound 00:17:59.71\00:18:01.74 in the right area in the right holes 00:18:01.78\00:18:03.95 that are in your body, 00:18:03.98\00:18:06.41 the air is just going to be wasted 00:18:06.45\00:18:08.35 and that's true with speaking. 00:18:08.38\00:18:09.72 I actually am having a harder time 00:18:09.75\00:18:11.85 speaking to you than I do singing right now, 00:18:11.89\00:18:15.06 because of the lack of the ability 00:18:15.09\00:18:16.62 to push my diaphragm further down 00:18:16.66\00:18:18.66 at this particular time, 00:18:18.69\00:18:20.60 somehow, I'm not using my support system 00:18:20.63\00:18:22.96 quite as well when I talk. 00:18:23.00\00:18:24.93 So I'm sitting here gasping for air as you're noticing. 00:18:24.97\00:18:28.90 When I'm singing, for some reason, 00:18:28.94\00:18:30.57 I've done that so much more and I'm so well trained 00:18:30.61\00:18:34.01 into knowing what I have to incorporate 00:18:34.04\00:18:35.98 and how to focus the tone wants... 00:18:36.01\00:18:38.58 So I'm not getting any more air 00:18:38.61\00:18:40.08 when I'm singing than I am when I'm talking, 00:18:40.12\00:18:41.88 I just have learned better how to resonate it 00:18:41.92\00:18:44.92 in certain places, so it'll last longer for me. 00:18:44.95\00:18:47.72 And why don't I do that? 00:18:47.76\00:18:49.96 The person who's asking about how to speak better 00:18:49.99\00:18:53.70 for the person who's asking about, 00:18:53.73\00:18:56.23 you know, how old is too old to sing, 00:18:56.26\00:18:57.70 let's just do a little bit of singing together. 00:18:57.73\00:18:59.63 So that you get a sense of how you can improve 00:18:59.67\00:19:01.94 your own voice in a safe way, 00:19:01.97\00:19:03.47 I'm only going to give you a few things 00:19:03.51\00:19:04.84 because you really need somebody to monitor you 00:19:04.87\00:19:07.74 to do most of the exercise just to make sure 00:19:07.78\00:19:10.31 you don't hurt anything. 00:19:10.35\00:19:11.68 And if you do anything that hurts, what do you do? 00:19:11.71\00:19:15.18 Ha-ha, stop. 00:19:15.22\00:19:16.55 There you go, that's exactly it. 00:19:16.58\00:19:18.35 All right, let me see if I can show you 00:19:18.39\00:19:19.89 a few things over here at the piano 00:19:19.92\00:19:22.49 on basic ways to resonate, okay?
