Hello and welcome to "On the Road". 00:00:59.67\00:01:01.64 I'm Pastor Nathan Renner, the senior pastor 00:01:01.67\00:01:03.96 of the Troy Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:01:03.99\00:01:06.31 It's my privilege to be able to spend a little time 00:01:06.34\00:01:09.09 with you today, studying God's word. 00:01:09.12\00:01:12.36 Our topic is titled 00:01:12.39\00:01:14.83 "Jesus the Last Adam and the New Israel". 00:01:14.86\00:01:19.66 Fascinating topic diving in to the depths of scripture 00:01:19.69\00:01:23.75 talking about these important topics of Adam and Israel 00:01:23.78\00:01:27.94 and I think that you will be thrilled as you hear the message 00:01:27.97\00:01:32.12 "Jesus the Last Adam and the new Israel." 00:01:32.15\00:01:35.49 Let's begin with prayer. 00:01:35.52\00:01:37.79 Our father, we thank you for this great day of life. 00:01:37.82\00:01:41.02 We thank you for the great privilege of studying Your word. 00:01:41.05\00:01:46.07 Please, now as we look at your word, 00:01:46.10\00:01:48.38 speak to our hearts and give us a revelation of Your truth 00:01:48.41\00:01:52.45 Iin Jesus name, amen. 00:01:52.48\00:01:56.24 The Bible begins very simply. 00:01:56.27\00:01:58.53 It begins with a perfect God and a perfect man 00:01:58.56\00:02:02.03 in a perfect environment on a perfect world. 00:02:02.06\00:02:05.11 It's a very simple picture. 00:02:05.14\00:02:06.70 God creates that world in six literal days 00:02:06.73\00:02:09.87 and the Bible as you read through the Book of Genesis, 00:02:09.90\00:02:12.29 in fact it begins with in the beginning God 00:02:12.32\00:02:15.57 and God creates the first day and the Bible says, it was Good. 00:02:15.60\00:02:19.34 God creates and God says it was good. 00:02:19.37\00:02:21.63 God creates, the Bible says it was good. 00:02:21.66\00:02:24.02 Over and over and over again 00:02:24.05\00:02:25.75 the message we get in the Book of Genesis 00:02:25.78\00:02:28.43 in the first chapter is a very simple message. 00:02:28.46\00:02:31.02 You begin with a perfect God, a perfect world, 00:02:31.05\00:02:34.50 a perfect environment, and a perfect man. 00:02:34.53\00:02:37.49 The Bible as I have said begins very simply. 00:02:37.52\00:02:41.73 And in Genesis Chapter 2, God gives this perfect man 00:02:41.76\00:02:45.36 and a perfect world, a perfect food. 00:02:45.39\00:02:47.48 He gives them all of the trees in the garden except for one, 00:02:47.51\00:02:52.88 in Genesis 2:17, the Lord says to Adam, 00:02:52.91\00:02:58.74 "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil 00:02:58.77\00:03:03.86 you shall not eat, for in the day 00:03:03.89\00:03:06.76 that you eat of it you shall surely die." 00:03:06.79\00:03:10.38 God in the beginning creates this--I have said, 00:03:10.41\00:03:13.48 a perfect world, a perfect environment, 00:03:13.51\00:03:16.70 there's a perfect God, and there's a perfect man, 00:03:16.73\00:03:19.62 and God in this perfect world and with this perfect man, 00:03:19.65\00:03:24.00 gives him permission to eat 00:03:24.03\00:03:26.24 from any tree in the garden except for one 00:03:26.27\00:03:29.99 and that's the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:03:30.02\00:03:33.65 And I've asked myself and I know many of you have asked yourself, 00:03:33.68\00:03:37.93 why is it that God would create 00:03:37.96\00:03:40.95 this tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:03:40.98\00:03:44.07 Why would God give this perfect man in this perfect environment, 00:03:44.10\00:03:49.27 this opportunity to eat from a tree 00:03:49.30\00:03:53.00 that would not be for his benefit? 00:03:53.03\00:03:55.57 Well, my friends, 00:03:55.60\00:03:56.97 the Bible declares very plainly that God is love. 00:03:57.00\00:04:00.09 And love must give us the right to not only say yes, 00:04:00.12\00:04:04.92 but the right to say no. 00:04:04.95\00:04:06.51 And so God provides this one opportunity, 00:04:06.54\00:04:09.71 this tree of the knowledge of good and evil, 00:04:09.74\00:04:12.26 as an opportunity for Adam and Eve 00:04:12.29\00:04:15.36 to cast their vote on the side of God 00:04:15.39\00:04:18.75 or on the side of the Satan and themselves. 00:04:18.78\00:04:22.97 And in Genesis Chapter 3, we know the tragic story. 00:04:23.00\00:04:26.85 Eve is there at the tree 00:04:26.88\00:04:28.41 and she takes of the fruit of the tree 00:04:28.44\00:04:30.96 and she eats the fruit of the tree 00:04:30.99\00:04:33.30 and then she gives some to her husband. 00:04:33.33\00:04:35.91 And we know the tragic story, 00:04:35.94\00:04:38.52 the eyes of the both of them are opened, 00:04:38.55\00:04:40.51 they understand good and evil. 00:04:40.54\00:04:43.45 They fall and they begin 00:04:43.48\00:04:47.50 that downwards spiral of sin and death. 00:04:47.53\00:04:53.70 Things were rolling along quiet nicely 00:04:53.73\00:04:55.82 as I--as we look at scripture, 00:04:55.85\00:04:57.81 you've a perfect God, perfect world, 00:04:57.84\00:04:59.51 perfect man, perfect environment, 00:04:59.54\00:05:01.58 but then as a result of the tragic fall, 00:05:01.61\00:05:05.45 the world is entered into a downward spiral. 00:05:05.48\00:05:09.86 If you wanted to just sum up the crises, 00:05:09.89\00:05:12.68 the characteristics of the crises that Adam and Eve 00:05:12.71\00:05:15.88 and this world faced, it could be summed up 00:05:15.91\00:05:18.44 in two very simple words, two very simple words. 00:05:18.47\00:05:23.52 They are death and disobedience, death and disobedience. 00:05:23.55\00:05:30.33 We see it in Genesis 2:17, as we've already read, 00:05:30.36\00:05:34.18 that God says, "If you eat from the tree 00:05:34.21\00:05:36.49 of the knowledge of good and evil, you will die". 00:05:36.52\00:05:41.11 And so in the midst of the sin we have the crises of death 00:05:41.14\00:05:44.74 entering our world for the very first time. 00:05:44.77\00:05:47.28 Adam and Eve, in their pre-sin world, 00:05:47.31\00:05:52.47 death was not in existence. 00:05:52.50\00:05:54.46 There was no such thing as death. 00:05:54.49\00:05:55.86 There was no such thing as pain. 00:05:55.89\00:05:58.42 There was no such thing as sorrow. 00:05:58.45\00:06:00.68 But as a result of the sin of Adam and Eve, 00:06:00.71\00:06:04.04 the Bible makes it clear that death is the new reality, 00:06:04.07\00:06:08.01 death is the new reality. 00:06:08.04\00:06:09.96 And of course disobedience was the cause of that death. 00:06:09.99\00:06:14.32 God said you shall not eat of the tree. 00:06:14.35\00:06:17.32 Yet they chose to eat of the tree as well. 00:06:17.35\00:06:20.40 So when we look at the Genesis story 00:06:20.43\00:06:22.74 and we look at the Bible, the Bible begins very simply, 00:06:22.77\00:06:26.44 perfect God, perfect world, 00:06:26.47\00:06:28.23 perfect environment, perfect man, 00:06:28.26\00:06:30.40 and in the midst of all of that perfection, 00:06:30.43\00:06:33.35 there's a wrong decision. 00:06:33.38\00:06:35.33 There is a choice that is made against God, 00:06:35.36\00:06:38.37 a disobedient choice. 00:06:38.40\00:06:40.19 And the result of that disobedient choice is death. 00:06:40.22\00:06:43.99 And so the two key problems that plague humanity 00:06:44.02\00:06:48.16 in the Bible are death and disobedience. 00:06:48.19\00:06:53.01 This is the crises that humanity faced 00:06:53.04\00:06:56.76 and that God has to deal with, 00:06:56.79\00:06:59.64 or God chose to deal with. 00:06:59.67\00:07:02.87 So how is this crises managed? I mean, what does God do? 00:07:02.90\00:07:07.42 Here is man. 00:07:07.45\00:07:09.28 Man has willfully chosen 00:07:09.31\00:07:12.26 to place himself on the side of Satan. 00:07:12.29\00:07:16.61 What is God to do in the midst of this crises? 00:07:16.64\00:07:20.15 I mean, God gave man a free will. 00:07:20.18\00:07:22.53 God gave man free choice. 00:07:22.56\00:07:24.79 And man exercised that freedom inappropriately. 00:07:24.82\00:07:28.76 Man exercised that freedom in rebellion against God. 00:07:28.79\00:07:33.31 And so know they are in crises, what is God to do? 00:07:33.34\00:07:40.28 Well, since it was man that placed himself on Satan side, 00:07:40.31\00:07:45.80 it was only man that could choose 00:07:45.83\00:07:48.89 to remove himself from Satan's side. 00:07:48.92\00:07:52.47 Since it was man that sinned, it was man that must obey. 00:07:52.50\00:07:58.25 Because it was man that sinned, it was man that must die. 00:07:58.28\00:08:04.68 God in some sins-- 00:08:04.71\00:08:06.70 and it's a little difficult to even say this, 00:08:06.73\00:08:09.68 but God was in some sins limited in this crises 00:08:09.71\00:08:15.63 by His own justice and His own integrity. 00:08:15.66\00:08:19.62 God as God couldn't just step in and fix it. 00:08:19.65\00:08:23.12 It was man's problem. 00:08:23.15\00:08:24.79 Man had chose Satan and God must honor his choice. 00:08:24.82\00:08:30.27 I want you to understand that. It's really important. 00:08:30.30\00:08:33.46 You see, man made the choice to become a servant of Satan. 00:08:33.49\00:08:39.74 Man made the choice to take of the fruit 00:08:39.77\00:08:43.67 and eat the fruit of the tree. 00:08:43.70\00:08:45.75 It was man's decision. 00:08:45.78\00:08:48.25 God did not force Adam to eat from the tree. 00:08:48.28\00:08:51.95 God did not compelled Adam to eat from the tree. 00:08:51.98\00:08:55.62 Satan didn't compel Adam to eat from the tree. 00:08:55.65\00:09:00.03 It was Adam's choice to eat from the tree. 00:09:00.06\00:09:03.73 So Adam, of his own free will, 00:09:03.76\00:09:07.88 chose to align himself with Satan. 00:09:07.91\00:09:13.09 Now this is important because God is a gentleman. 00:09:13.12\00:09:17.57 God is gentleman. 00:09:17.60\00:09:18.97 God will honor the choice of man. 00:09:19.00\00:09:23.02 Man has said, "We will align ourselves with Satan." 00:09:23.05\00:09:25.57 And so God will say, "I will honor your choice. 00:09:25.60\00:09:28.82 I won't step in and stop you. I will honor your choice." 00:09:28.85\00:09:34.08 And so in the midst of this crises, God was limited, 00:09:34.11\00:09:39.41 because it was man that made the choice, 00:09:39.44\00:09:41.75 it was only by man that this could be undone. 00:09:41.78\00:09:45.50 Now I want to stop you, just for a moment here, 00:09:45.53\00:09:48.90 and make it very clear. 00:09:48.93\00:09:50.30 You're gonna have to stick with me here for a little while 00:09:50.33\00:09:53.32 because when I say it was man that has to solve this problem, 00:09:53.35\00:09:58.23 it isn't really in our power to solve it 00:09:58.26\00:10:02.44 because we're going to die. 00:10:02.47\00:10:04.63 We are going to die. And we have sinned. 00:10:04.66\00:10:07.45 And so when we're saying that man is the one 00:10:07.48\00:10:10.93 that has to fix this problem, 00:10:10.96\00:10:13.35 we're going to see exactly 00:10:13.38\00:10:14.98 what that really means in a little moment. 00:10:15.01\00:10:17.17 But I'll give you a hint. 00:10:17.20\00:10:18.57 It involves the God Man, Jesus Christ. 00:10:18.60\00:10:22.22 Now let's get back to the scriptures. 00:10:22.25\00:10:27.09 Since it was man that got himself into this predicament, 00:10:27.12\00:10:30.57 what is God going to do? What is God going to do? 00:10:30.60\00:10:36.08 Well-- and this is important. 00:10:36.11\00:10:38.32 Throughout the Old Testament 00:10:38.35\00:10:39.95 we see God looking for a new man or a new Adam 00:10:39.98\00:10:45.38 or a new people that would be faithful to Him. 00:10:45.41\00:10:50.09 Now I want you to follow that. 00:10:50.12\00:10:52.26 As we look-- and I'll show you this 00:10:52.29\00:10:54.15 from scripture in just a moment. 00:10:54.18\00:10:55.63 As we look, we begin with Adam. And Adam makes a wrong choice. 00:10:55.66\00:11:00.59 He falls. 00:11:00.62\00:11:03.15 And after that fall, 00:11:03.18\00:11:04.63 since it was man that got them into the situation, 00:11:04.66\00:11:07.16 it is man that must get himself out. 00:11:07.19\00:11:09.17 And so what do we see? 00:11:09.20\00:11:10.87 We see God--we see God looking for a new man 00:11:10.90\00:11:16.66 that will not do the same kinds of things that Adam does. 00:11:16.69\00:11:21.37 So we see God looking for a new man, 00:11:21.40\00:11:25.02 a new Adam or a new people that will be faithful to Him. 00:11:25.05\00:11:30.24 And unfortunately every time they come up short. 00:11:30.27\00:11:37.15 Let's take for example, Noah. 00:11:37.18\00:11:39.83 In the days of Noah the earth become so sinful 00:11:39.86\00:11:43.49 that the Bible says, in Genesis 6:5, 6, 00:11:43.52\00:11:48.23 "That the Lord saw the wickedness of man 00:11:48.26\00:11:50.40 was great on the earth, 00:11:50.43\00:11:52.15 and that every intention of his thoughts 00:11:52.18\00:11:54.89 of his heart was only evil continually. 00:11:54.92\00:11:58.82 And the Lord was sorry that He made man on the earth 00:11:58.85\00:12:02.23 and it grieved Him in His heart. 00:12:02.26\00:12:04.58 So the Lord said 'I would blot out man 00:12:04.61\00:12:07.35 whom I have created from the face of the land, 00:12:07.38\00:12:10.84 men and animals and creeping things 00:12:10.87\00:12:13.21 and birds of the heavens for I am sorry 00:12:13.24\00:12:16.22 that I have made them.' 00:12:16.25\00:12:18.35 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord." 00:12:18.38\00:12:22.49 Now notice the picture. 00:12:22.52\00:12:24.03 In Genesis Chapter 6, humanity as a result of the fall 00:12:24.06\00:12:28.58 and of their own decisions, 00:12:28.61\00:12:30.11 has become so corrupt 00:12:30.14\00:12:33.39 that ultimately God's heart is grieved 00:12:33.42\00:12:36.63 that He made humanity. 00:12:36.66\00:12:38.72 Yeah, people have hard time understanding that. 00:12:38.75\00:12:40.93 But I supposed it's a little bit like Einstein 00:12:40.96\00:12:44.73 who really was one of the pioneers 00:12:44.76\00:12:47.91 in the study of atomic energy. 00:12:47.94\00:12:52.97 And he recognized in the realities of atomic energy 00:12:53.00\00:12:58.57 that it could be used for extremely wonderful 00:12:58.60\00:13:00.70 and positive purposes 00:13:00.73\00:13:02.49 and it could be used for extremely horrible purposes. 00:13:02.52\00:13:05.90 And here, God created man to be used 00:13:05.93\00:13:09.30 and to exist for a glorious purpose 00:13:09.33\00:13:13.84 and yet what does God see, 00:13:13.87\00:13:15.73 that, that wonderful thing that He created 00:13:15.76\00:13:17.70 that could used for a glorious purpose has now destroyed itself 00:13:17.73\00:13:22.65 and has ruined itself and become full of violence. 00:13:22.68\00:13:27.69 So what does God do? 00:13:27.72\00:13:29.96 Well, the Bible says, as we read there in Genesis 6:8, 00:13:29.99\00:13:33.25 that Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. 00:13:33.28\00:13:39.76 Now it's fascinating, what we see. 00:13:39.79\00:13:42.62 We see that you have-- 00:13:42.65\00:13:44.29 now God is going to destroy the earth at by the flood. 00:13:44.32\00:13:46.79 And he's going to preserve through that flood one man 00:13:46.82\00:13:50.85 and that man and his family is Noah. 00:13:50.88\00:13:54.29 And what we're gonna see is that when God sends the flood, 00:13:54.32\00:13:58.07 it is the reversal of creation. 00:13:58.10\00:14:01.79 Let me say that again. 00:14:01.82\00:14:03.19 When God sends the flood it is the reversal of creation. 00:14:03.22\00:14:08.84 Genesis 7:11, 12. Genesis 7:11,12. 00:14:08.87\00:14:16.84 "In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, 00:14:16.87\00:14:20.78 in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, 00:14:20.81\00:14:24.48 on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, 00:14:24.51\00:14:30.15 and the windows of the heaven were opened." 00:14:30.18\00:14:34.66 Now notice that fascinating language. 00:14:34.69\00:14:36.43 Well, we will read verse 12 as well. 00:14:36.46\00:14:38.05 "The rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights." 00:14:38.08\00:14:41.58 Now notice what it's saying here. 00:14:41.61\00:14:43.15 It's saying, at such in such a time, 00:14:43.18\00:14:45.54 particular time of Noah's life, 00:14:45.57\00:14:47.46 the waters of the great deep burst forth and came up. 00:14:47.49\00:14:53.30 And it says, that the waters 00:14:53.33\00:14:54.91 that were above the earth came down. 00:14:54.94\00:14:58.91 Now notice this amazing picture. 00:14:58.94\00:15:01.83 You have water shooting up and water falling down. 00:15:01.86\00:15:07.61 Come with me to Genesis 1:7, Genesis 1:7. 00:15:07.64\00:15:15.07 It is speaking of the days of creation and the Bible says, 00:15:15.10\00:15:21.04 "And God made the expanse, and separated the waters 00:15:21.07\00:15:25.55 that were under the expanse from the waters 00:15:25.58\00:15:28.05 that were above the expanse, and it was so" verse 8, 00:15:28.08\00:15:31.41 "God called the expanse heaven and there was evening 00:15:31.44\00:15:34.46 and there was morning, the second day." 00:15:34.49\00:15:37.09 Now notice what we are seeing here in Genesis Chapter 1. 00:15:37.12\00:15:41.63 In Genesis 1:1, when God is creating 00:15:41.66\00:15:44.42 the heavens and the earth, the Bible says 00:15:44.45\00:15:46.45 that the earth is formless and void 00:15:46.48\00:15:48.96 and then it's covered in water. 00:15:48.99\00:15:51.66 And then when God begins to create, 00:15:51.69\00:15:54.22 He separates the water's that are on the earth 00:15:54.25\00:15:58.03 and He makes an expanse, or we're in atmosphere 00:15:58.06\00:16:01.29 and then there's water above the earth. 00:16:01.32\00:16:03.90 And so in the creation story here-- 00:16:03.93\00:16:07.36 which by the way is more than a story it's a historical fact. 00:16:07.39\00:16:11.01 But in this creation narrative, 00:16:11.04\00:16:13.30 we see that God is taking this earth 00:16:13.33\00:16:16.67 that's just one formless void piece of water essentially 00:16:16.70\00:16:21.70 and he separates the water. 00:16:21.73\00:16:24.18 He make's a division in the water 00:16:24.21\00:16:26.16 so that some of the water goes up 00:16:26.19\00:16:28.17 and it forms a sort of an atmosphere 00:16:28.20\00:16:31.94 and then some of the water is still remaining on the earth. 00:16:31.97\00:16:37.50 Now it's fascinating then, if in the creation story Gods 00:16:37.53\00:16:41.69 separates the water's from the water's 00:16:41.72\00:16:44.64 and He makes an atmosphere of water 00:16:44.67\00:16:48.47 between the earth and the sky, 00:16:48.50\00:16:50.76 when in the creation God creates the water, 00:16:50.79\00:16:54.18 He moves the water up and keep some down, 00:16:54.21\00:16:57.81 we see in the flood the reversal of creation. 00:16:57.84\00:17:02.91 Again we see in the flood the reversal of the creation. 00:17:02.94\00:17:07.20 Remember in Genesis Chapter 7 when the flood begins, 00:17:07.23\00:17:11.44 the water's fall down from the sky 00:17:11.47\00:17:14.34 and they shoot up from the ground. 00:17:14.37\00:17:17.00 They fall down from the sky 00:17:17.03\00:17:19.08 and they shoot up from the ground. 00:17:19.11\00:17:21.36 Now notice the powerful image that God is communicating here. 00:17:21.39\00:17:26.16 What is God saying in the flood? 00:17:26.19\00:17:29.65 God is saying that the earth has become so corrupt, 00:17:29.68\00:17:33.36 the earth has become so vile, that God is saying, 00:17:33.39\00:17:36.97 He' gonna start over. 00:17:37.00\00:17:38.81 Just like He began with the perfect world 00:17:38.84\00:17:41.02 and a perfect creation, 00:17:41.05\00:17:42.55 He begins with this perfect creation. 00:17:42.58\00:17:45.73 So God says, "I'm going to reverse creation. 00:17:45.76\00:17:48.81 Just like I moved the waters apart in creation, 00:17:48.84\00:17:52.08 now I'm going to move them back together." 00:17:52.11\00:17:54.67 And that's what we're seeing in Genesis Chapter 7. 00:17:54.70\00:17:58.96 Now it's fascinating because if you look in Genesis 1:1, 2, 00:17:58.99\00:18:04.51 it says very simply "In the beginning God created 00:18:04.54\00:18:07.41 the heavens and the earth. 00:18:07.44\00:18:08.91 The earth was without form and void. 00:18:08.94\00:18:12.01 Darkness was over the face of the deep. 00:18:12.04\00:18:14.64 And the Spirit of God 00:18:14.67\00:18:16.43 was hovering over the face of the waters." 00:18:16.46\00:18:20.84 So you have here in the beginning, 00:18:20.87\00:18:22.58 God is creating-- and the Bible says, 00:18:22.61\00:18:25.03 that the earth is formless and void 00:18:25.06\00:18:26.66 and the spirit of God is there hovering 00:18:26.69\00:18:29.88 over the face of the water. 00:18:29.91\00:18:32.68 Come with me to Genesis 7:20. Genesis 7:20. 00:18:32.71\00:18:37.68 The Bible says, "The waters prevailed above the mountains, 00:18:41.57\00:18:49.57 covering them fifteen cubits deep." 00:18:49.60\00:18:51.89 Notice, my friends, in Genesis Chapter 7, 00:18:51.92\00:18:54.27 when the flood comes, 00:18:54.30\00:18:55.67 it is the full reversal of creation. 00:18:55.70\00:18:57.96 The water's that were separated are now reunited 00:18:57.99\00:19:01.06 and they cover the entire globe, 00:19:01.09\00:19:04.45 just like we read in Genesis Chapter 1. 00:19:04.48\00:19:07.64 We see the reversal of creation. 00:19:07.67\00:19:10.34 Now it's fascinating because if we skip down to Genesis 8:1, 00:19:10.37\00:19:15.22 the Bible says, "But God remembered Noah 00:19:15.25\00:19:18.89 and all the beasts and all the livestock 00:19:18.92\00:19:22.08 that were with him in the ark. 00:19:22.11\00:19:24.66 And God made a wind blow over the earth, 00:19:24.69\00:19:28.65 and the waters subsided." 00:19:28.68\00:19:31.58 It's fascinating picture. 00:19:31.61\00:19:33.76 The flood is going and it goes over the tops of the mountains 00:19:33.79\00:19:38.23 and then when the time comes for the flood to seize, 00:19:38.26\00:19:41.59 the Bible says that God causes a wind to blow over the waters. 00:19:41.62\00:19:47.87 Fascinating thing we miss in the English. 00:19:47.90\00:19:50.52 But it's right there in Hebrew, 00:19:50.55\00:19:52.37 unmistakably there in the Hebrew. 00:19:52.40\00:19:55.29 And that is simply this. 00:19:55.32\00:19:57.13 The word for wind in Hebrew and in Greek is the same word 00:19:57.16\00:20:02.97 for spirit and breath and wind, spirit, breath, and wind. 00:20:03.00\00:20:10.24 All the same in Hebrew and all the same in Greek. 00:20:10.27\00:20:14.96 In Greek "psuche" and in Hebrew "ruach." 00:20:14.99\00:20:18.41 Now it's fascinating what's being said. 00:20:18.44\00:20:21.23 Now remember Genesis Chapter 1, the earth is formless and void. 00:20:21.26\00:20:24.90 It's covered with water and the spirit of God 00:20:24.93\00:20:27.51 is there hovering over the waters. 00:20:27.54\00:20:29.63 The spirit of God is hovering over the waters. 00:20:29.66\00:20:32.02 So you have the water covered earth and the spirit. 00:20:32.05\00:20:35.33 In Genesis Chapter 8, 00:20:35.36\00:20:36.73 you have the water covered earth and the wind. 00:20:36.76\00:20:40.11 The wind, it's the same Hebrew word. 00:20:40.14\00:20:44.22 So what do we see then in the creation story? 00:20:44.25\00:20:48.35 We see the creation story, Genesis Chapter 1, 00:20:48.38\00:20:52.68 then the earth gets so corrupt because of sin that God says 00:20:52.71\00:20:56.55 in Genesis 6 and 7, "I'm going to start over. 00:20:56.58\00:21:00.38 I'm going to reverse creation. 00:21:00.41\00:21:02.81 Just like as I separated the water's in Genesis 1, 00:21:02.84\00:21:05.68 I'm going to reunite the waters in Genesis 7. 00:21:05.71\00:21:08.66 Just like I reunited the waters, 00:21:08.69\00:21:11.34 it's going to cover the whole earth." 00:21:11.37\00:21:13.68 And just like when the earth was covered 00:21:13.71\00:21:16.06 with water in Genesis 1:2, 00:21:16.09\00:21:18.82 the Bible says, that the spirit was there. 00:21:18.85\00:21:21.37 So in Genesis 8:1, when God says, 00:21:21.40\00:21:24.51 the earth is covered with water, 00:21:24.54\00:21:26.12 His wind is there, His ruach is there. 00:21:26.15\00:21:31.14 My friends, what are we seeing? 00:21:31.17\00:21:33.29 We're seeing that the flood is the reversal of creation. 00:21:33.32\00:21:38.33 Now it's fascinating in Genesis 2:7, 00:21:38.36\00:21:44.75 notice what the Bible says about Adam. 00:21:44.78\00:21:48.22 The Bible says, "Then the Lord God 00:21:48.25\00:21:50.99 formed the man of the dust from the ground 00:21:51.02\00:21:54.34 and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, 00:21:54.37\00:21:57.60 and man became a living creature." 00:21:57.63\00:22:02.17 Man became a living creature. 00:22:02.20\00:22:04.43 Now Adam--the word Adam in Hebrew its Adam. 00:22:04.46\00:22:08.46 And that name Adam just means something very simple. 00:22:08.49\00:22:14.67 Adam just means dust or dirt. 00:22:14.70\00:22:18.62 Okay. Just mean dirt. 00:22:18.65\00:22:22.13 And so really, in essence, when God named Adam, Adam, 00:22:22.16\00:22:26.43 God named Adam dust or dirt. 00:22:26.46\00:22:30.92 God named him after what he was made out of. 00:22:30.95\00:22:34.82 That's Genesis 2:7. 00:22:34.85\00:22:37.49 It's fascinating though when you get to Genesis 9: 20, 00:22:37.52\00:22:42.84 the flood is over, okay. 00:22:42.87\00:22:45.39 The flood is over, it's interesting too 00:22:45.42\00:22:47.99 because God gives instructions to Adam 00:22:48.02\00:22:50.30 after His creation of how to eat. 00:22:50.33\00:22:52.60 As soon as the flood is over, God gives instructions to Noah 00:22:52.63\00:22:56.92 about how to eat there in Genesis 9. 00:22:56.95\00:22:59.05 But notice Genesis 9:20. Genesis 9:20. 00:22:59.08\00:23:05.82 The flood is over and the Bible says, 00:23:05.85\00:23:08.78 "Noah began to be a man of the soil." 00:23:08.81\00:23:14.15 Noah became a man of the soil. 00:23:14.18\00:23:18.68 Now, I wonder what the word soil is? 00:23:18.71\00:23:22.56 It's fascinating, It's fascinating. 00:23:22.59\00:23:24.62 The word soil there is Adam. It's Adam. 00:23:24.65\00:23:30.34 So what does that mean? What does that mean? 00:23:30.37\00:23:33.85 Really, essentially the point of the text is that after the flood 00:23:33.88\00:23:38.70 and the earth is essentially now the new creation, 00:23:38.73\00:23:42.16 God is beginning again with a new Adam, the new Adam. 00:23:42.19\00:23:48.67 And that new Adam is Noah. That new Adam is Noah. 00:23:48.70\00:23:54.11 Just like God creates the world in Genesis Chapter 1, 00:23:54.14\00:23:57.92 He reverses creation in the flood 00:23:57.95\00:24:00.64 and then He starts off with a new head of humanity 00:24:00.67\00:24:05.81 and that new head of humanity is Noah. 00:24:05.84\00:24:08.47 And the Bible refers to Noah as a man of the soil. 00:24:08.50\00:24:13.01 Remember the word soil or dirt? It means Adam. 00:24:13.04\00:24:17.76 Adam is the Hebrew word that means man of the soil. 00:24:17.79\00:24:21.19 So here we see that Noah is the new Adam. 00:24:21.22\00:24:25.16 He's the new father of humanity. 00:24:25.19\00:24:28.97 But what happens to Noah as soon as the Bible declares 00:24:29.00\00:24:33.97 Ithat he is the new Adam? 00:24:34.00\00:24:36.49 Genesis Chapter 9, we just read verse 20. 00:24:36.52\00:24:38.85 "Noah began to be a man of the soil, 00:24:38.88\00:24:42.41 and he planted a vineyard" verse 2, 00:24:42.44\00:24:44.92 "He drank of the wine and became drunk 00:24:44.95\00:24:48.05 and lay uncovered in his tents." 00:24:48.08\00:24:51.13 And then we know the rest of the tragic story. 00:24:51.16\00:24:53.99 Ham his son comes in and see's his father 00:24:54.02\00:24:58.63 and we have this whole embarrassing episode 00:24:58.66\00:25:01.63 and this whole terrible experience. 00:25:01.66\00:25:04.47 Now I want you to follow 00:25:04.50\00:25:06.19 what is the word of God really telling us here. 00:25:06.22\00:25:09.27 It's telling us that Noah, the man of the soil, Noah, 00:25:09.30\00:25:13.74 the new Adam, has the same exact experience as the first Adam. 00:25:13.77\00:25:19.88 The first Adam had his new creation 00:25:19.91\00:25:22.70 and every thing was going fine 00:25:22.73\00:25:24.48 and then he fails and sins by eating 00:25:24.51\00:25:28.92 from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:25:28.95\00:25:31.00 And then comes Noah. 00:25:31.03\00:25:32.50 And Noah is the new Adam, after the new creation, 00:25:32.53\00:25:36.81 after the reversal of the creation. 00:25:36.84\00:25:40.20 And then the recreation, the new Adam, Noah, 00:25:40.23\00:25:45.18 immediately drinks of the fruit of the wine 00:25:45.21\00:25:49.37 and you see the whole sad story of his nakedness 00:25:49.40\00:25:54.20 and his problem there with his son, 00:25:54.23\00:25:59.16 and of course most commentators understand 00:25:59.19\00:26:02.27 that it wasn't just that his son saw him naked. 00:26:02.30\00:26:07.54 But there is some kind of Hebrew idiom 00:26:07.57\00:26:10.87 there that's implying some violation took place. 00:26:10.90\00:26:16.19 And so, my friends, 00:26:16.22\00:26:17.59 we see the story of Adam replayed in the story of Noah. 00:26:17.62\00:26:24.74 Adam is the head of a new creation and Adam-- 00:26:24.77\00:26:28.89 or Noah is the head of a new creation, 00:26:28.92\00:26:30.74 the new Adam and he goes through the same sad experience, 00:26:30.77\00:26:37.36 the same sad experience as the first Adam. 00:26:37.39\00:26:43.29 Now God as we have said remember, God, began with Adam. 00:26:43.32\00:26:47.61 And Adam was a perfect man in a perfect world, 00:26:47.64\00:26:49.93 with the perfect God and a perfect environment 00:26:49.96\00:26:52.28 and Adam chose to align himself with Satan. 00:26:52.31\00:26:55.86 Adam chose to align himself with Satan. 00:26:55.89\00:26:59.11 And so God needs to rescue humanity, 00:26:59.14\00:27:02.32 but God can't violate man's choice. 00:27:02.35\00:27:05.44 So God starts--and so man has chosen to serve the devil. 00:27:05.47\00:27:09.45 God is not gonna violate that. So what does God do? 00:27:09.48\00:27:12.92 God says, "All right we're gonna reverse creation, 00:27:12.95\00:27:15.38 we're gonna start over with a new Adam." 00:27:15.41\00:27:18.10 And that new Adam is Noah, a man of the soil. 00:27:18.13\00:27:21.37 Noah became the new Adam. 00:27:21.40\00:27:23.49 And that new Adam, that new Adam immediately stumbles 00:27:23.52\00:27:27.62 and sins just like the first Adam. 00:27:27.65\00:27:30.37 So God makes another attempt. 00:27:30.40\00:27:32.23 God makes another attempt with Israel. 00:27:32.26\00:27:36.91 Go to Exodus Chapter 4. 00:27:36.94\00:27:39.87 Exodus 4: 22. Exodus 4: 22. 00:27:39.90\00:27:47.87 Here the Bible refers to Israel as God's first born son, 00:27:47.90\00:27:54.22 by the way which is a link to Adam, 00:27:54.25\00:27:58.07 or Adam being God's first born. 00:27:58.10\00:28:01.40 "Then you shall say to Pharaoh, Thus says the LORD, 00:28:01.43\00:28:04.22 'Israel is my firstborn son.'" 00:28:04.25\00:28:07.87 Notice the language. 00:28:07.90\00:28:09.35 God understands that Israel is His firstborn son. 00:28:09.38\00:28:13.91 And so Israel is now the new Adam, God's first born. 00:28:13.94\00:28:18.77 And what is God trying to do with His new firstborn? 00:28:18.80\00:28:24.68 He's trying to use them as an example of faithfulness, 00:28:24.71\00:28:30.27 the head of the new humanity as it were. 00:28:30.30\00:28:32.99 Come with me to Exodus 16:4. 00:28:33.02\00:28:39.23 Just like God gave Adam a test in the new creation, 00:28:39.26\00:28:44.24 so God gave Noah the test in the new creation 00:28:44.27\00:28:48.17 and Noah failed it by drinking alcohol. 00:28:48.20\00:28:51.17 In Exodus 16:4, notice what God says, 00:28:51.20\00:28:57.99 "Then the Lord said to Moses, 00:28:58.02\00:28:59.98 'Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, 00:29:00.01\00:29:04.66 and the people shall go out 00:29:04.69\00:29:06.99 and gather a day's portion every day, 00:29:07.02\00:29:09.66 that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 00:29:09.69\00:29:15.78 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, 00:29:15.81\00:29:19.64 it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.'" 00:29:19.67\00:29:23.61 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, 00:29:23.64\00:29:26.55 and then Moses and Aaron began to instruct the people. 00:29:26.58\00:29:28.89 Now notice, what's happening here. 00:29:28.92\00:29:30.52 You have Israel, the new Adam, God's firstborn. 00:29:30.55\00:29:35.39 And God says, "Just like I gave Adam a test, 00:29:35.42\00:29:39.66 and just like I gave Noah a test. 00:29:39.69\00:29:42.74 So now I am giving you a test. 00:29:42.77\00:29:45.36 I am going to send manna to you. 00:29:45.39\00:29:47.94 And that manna will be available six days 00:29:47.97\00:29:50.54 and I am going to see whether you will obey my law or not 00:29:50.57\00:29:54.84 by sending you this test." 00:29:54.87\00:29:57.96 Just like God sent Adam the test and Noah the test, 00:29:57.99\00:30:02.32 so God now has Israel, His firstborn son, 00:30:02.35\00:30:05.99 the new Adam and God sends them a similar test. 00:30:06.02\00:30:10.90 In this case, a dietary test to test them 00:30:10.93\00:30:15.48 in their faithfulness to the law of God. 00:30:15.51\00:30:19.17 Now, what is the ultimate testimony about Israel? 00:30:19.20\00:30:25.53 What ultimately is the testimony? 00:30:25.56\00:30:28.21 Hosea 6:7 says, of the nation of Israel, 00:30:28.24\00:30:34.98 "But like Adam they transgressed the covenant, 00:30:35.01\00:30:42.98 there they dealt faithlessly with me." 00:30:43.01\00:30:48.67 Notice what the scripture says. 00:30:48.70\00:30:50.69 It's a fascinating testimony. 00:30:50.72\00:30:52.92 Ultimately, what God says is, 00:30:52.95\00:30:55.29 is that Israel is just like Adam. 00:30:55.32\00:30:59.87 "They were faithless to Me. 00:30:59.90\00:31:01.85 They broke covenant with Me just like Adam did." 00:31:01.88\00:31:06.10 You know what this is telling me 00:31:06.13\00:31:07.50 that again man got himself into this mess 00:31:07.53\00:31:12.49 by making a decision for Satan. 00:31:12.52\00:31:14.92 Man got himself into the mess by making a decision for Satan 00:31:14.95\00:31:17.86 and God says, "All right, we're gonna start over, 00:31:17.89\00:31:20.34 we're gonna recreate this earth. 00:31:20.37\00:31:22.33 We're gonna start off with a new Adam, that is Noah." 00:31:22.36\00:31:25.43 And Noah gets himself right in the same place. 00:31:25.46\00:31:28.13 And God says, "All right, we're gonna start, 00:31:28.16\00:31:29.55 we're gonna redeem Israel from Egypt 00:31:29.58\00:31:31.61 and we're gonna start over with Israel." 00:31:31.64\00:31:34.00 And Israel, what happens to them? 00:31:34.03\00:31:36.13 God gives them the test and what happens in their test? 00:31:36.16\00:31:40.55 They too fall short. 00:31:40.58\00:31:42.81 And in fact when get to the Book of Hosea, 00:31:42.84\00:31:44.79 as we just read, Hosea says, Israel is just like Adam. 00:31:44.82\00:31:49.26 They broke covenant with God. 00:31:49.29\00:31:51.15 They were faithless to God. 00:31:51.18\00:31:53.35 And so that gives us the remarkable picture, 00:31:53.38\00:31:55.98 my friends, and listen very carefully, 00:31:56.01\00:31:58.46 the story of Adam is the story of Nathan. 00:31:58.49\00:32:02.56 The story of Noah is the story of Nathan. 00:32:06.23\00:32:09.21 The story of Israel is the story of Nathan. 00:32:09.24\00:32:11.02 In other words, what we see here is essentially 00:32:11.05\00:32:14.03 that whether it's Noah, it's Adam or it is Israel, 00:32:14.06\00:32:18.78 that is the story of humanity. 00:32:18.81\00:32:22.13 That is the experience of everyone. 00:32:22.16\00:32:25.33 So, what is this all about? 00:32:25.36\00:32:27.92 The story of Noah is the story of Adam. 00:32:27.95\00:32:29.78 The story of Israel is the story of Adam. 00:32:29.81\00:32:31.87 The story Nathan Renner is the story of Adam. 00:32:31.90\00:32:34.22 The story of every human being is the story of Adam. 00:32:34.25\00:32:38.23 God gives us the opportunity to serve Him or not serve Him 00:32:38.26\00:32:42.71 and all of humanity has chosen to go the wrong way. 00:32:42.74\00:32:47.80 The Bible says, in Romans 3:23, 00:32:47.83\00:32:50.60 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." 00:32:50.63\00:32:55.48 My friends, so what is God to do? 00:32:55.51\00:32:57.88 What is God to do? 00:32:57.91\00:32:59.28 Man has chosen to align himself with Satan. 00:32:59.31\00:33:03.15 It is man that chose Satan, so it is got to be man 00:33:03.18\00:33:07.52 that chooses to not serve Satan and chooses to serve God. 00:33:07.55\00:33:13.17 Yet when God tries to do it with Adam it doesn't work. 00:33:13.20\00:33:15.98 When God tries to do with Noah it doesn't work. 00:33:16.01\00:33:18.32 When God tries to do with Israel it doesn't work. 00:33:18.35\00:33:21.02 So what is God to do? 00:33:21.05\00:33:24.14 God needs to send the last Adam 00:33:24.17\00:33:30.67 and the new Israel, Jesus Christ. 00:33:30.70\00:33:34.13 What is God to do? 00:33:34.16\00:33:36.27 God must become a man. 00:33:36.30\00:33:40.26 God must become a man. 00:33:40.29\00:33:42.56 You see, man enslaved himself to Satan. 00:33:42.59\00:33:48.53 Man enslaved himself to Satan. 00:33:48.56\00:33:50.80 So even when God starts over with a new creation 00:33:50.83\00:33:53.73 and a new Adam and Noah, 00:33:53.76\00:33:55.76 man is still enslaved to Satan, man still falls. 00:33:55.79\00:34:00.89 When He starts over with a new Israel, 00:34:00.92\00:34:03.03 the new Adam again, what happens with Israel? 00:34:03.06\00:34:06.39 They still are enslaved to Satan and they still fall. 00:34:06.42\00:34:09.45 So what does God do? 00:34:09.48\00:34:12.36 God becomes a man, so that as a man 00:34:12.39\00:34:16.86 He can be victorious where others have fallen. 00:34:16.89\00:34:20.07 That as a man, He can be victorious 00:34:20.10\00:34:22.91 where others have sinned 00:34:22.94\00:34:24.96 and so that as a man He can conquer disobedience and death, 00:34:24.99\00:34:28.82 the two great problems that we see in the garden. 00:34:28.85\00:34:32.33 God sends Jesus, the last Adam and the new Israel. 00:34:32.36\00:34:37.88 And as a man He fights with Satan on His own ground and wins 00:34:37.91\00:34:44.67 and He overcomes the problem of disobedience and death. 00:34:44.70\00:34:49.30 Come with me to Matthew Chapter 2, Matthew Chapter 2. 00:34:49.33\00:34:53.74 We're gonna begin in verse 13. 00:34:53.77\00:34:57.13 Matthew 2, beginning in verse 13. 00:34:57.16\00:35:01.16 Its fascinating picture here, 00:35:01.19\00:35:02.87 we're gonna look at the life of Jesus. 00:35:02.90\00:35:04.59 And what we're going to see is that the life of Jesus 00:35:04.62\00:35:08.17 is modeled after the experience of ancient Israel. 00:35:08.20\00:35:12.12 We're gonna see that the life of Jesus parallels 00:35:12.15\00:35:14.88 the experience of ancient Israel. 00:35:14.91\00:35:18.11 Matthew 2:13, "When they had departed--" 00:35:18.14\00:35:22.61 I'm talking--we're talking about Jesus here, He's a baby. 00:35:22.64\00:35:25.62 "Now when they had departed, 00:35:25.65\00:35:27.02 behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. 00:35:27.05\00:35:30.59 Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, 00:35:30.62\00:35:34.09 remain there until I tell you, 00:35:34.12\00:35:36.59 for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him.' 00:35:36.62\00:35:40.15 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night 00:35:40.18\00:35:42.58 and departed to Egypt 00:35:42.61\00:35:43.98 and remained there until the death of Herod. 00:35:44.01\00:35:46.83 This was to fulfill 00:35:46.86\00:35:48.69 what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, 00:35:48.72\00:35:51.24 'Out of Egypt I've called my son.'" 00:35:51.27\00:35:53.34 Now I want you to know the story of Jesus here, 00:35:53.37\00:35:55.60 Jesus is born, Herod wants to hurt Jesus. 00:35:55.63\00:35:58.68 So God tells Joseph, "Take Jesus to Egypt, 00:35:58.71\00:36:03.60 stay there until I tell you to leave 00:36:03.63\00:36:06.50 and then when you leave 00:36:06.53\00:36:07.90 it's gonna fulfill the prophecy of the Old Testament 00:36:07.93\00:36:10.35 that says, out of Egypt has God's son been called." 00:36:10.38\00:36:14.71 Now, come with me to the Book of Hosea. 00:36:14.74\00:36:18.22 Hosea 11:1, that's where we get this prophecy 00:36:18.25\00:36:22.55 that the son will leave Egypt. 00:36:22.58\00:36:25.51 Hosea 11:1, "When Israel was a child--" 00:36:25.54\00:36:31.84 I'm reading Hosea 11:1, 00:36:31.87\00:36:34.32 "When Israel was a child, I loved him 00:36:34.35\00:36:37.80 and out of Egypt I called my son." 00:36:37.83\00:36:43.07 According to Hosea 11:1, the son that God loved, 00:36:43.10\00:36:50.48 the son that God called out of Egypt, was Israel. 00:36:50.51\00:36:56.52 Now, Matthew applies that to Jesus. 00:36:56.55\00:37:02.13 Matthew applies that to Jesus. 00:37:02.16\00:37:06.16 In other words, what Matthew is telling us 00:37:06.19\00:37:08.63 is that Jesus is reliving the experience of ancient Israel 00:37:08.66\00:37:12.66 and of course that makes sense. 00:37:12.69\00:37:14.37 If you remember in the Bookv of Genesis, 00:37:14.40\00:37:16.92 there was a man named Joseph 00:37:16.95\00:37:19.40 who had dreams that went to Egypt. 00:37:19.43\00:37:23.40 And then God called His people out of Egypt, 00:37:23.43\00:37:27.25 He called Israel out of Egypt. 00:37:27.28\00:37:28.97 And so we see in Matthew 2, a guy named Joseph has a dream. 00:37:29.00\00:37:32.89 He goes to Egypt and then Jesus leaves Egypt 00:37:32.92\00:37:37.33 paralleling the experience of ancient Israel. 00:37:37.36\00:37:41.03 Well, notice what happens next, verse 19, 00:37:41.06\00:37:45.40 "Jesus now leaves Egypt when Harold died, 00:37:45.43\00:37:48.65 behold an angel of the Lord appeared to him in--to-- 00:37:48.68\00:37:51.47 appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 00:37:51.50\00:37:53.68 'Rise, take the child and his mother 00:37:53.71\00:37:55.46 and go to the land of Israel, 00:37:55.49\00:37:57.12 for those who sought the child's life are dead.'" 00:37:57.15\00:38:00.04 And so he gets up 00:38:00.07\00:38:01.53 and they go to Israel, just like ancient Israel. 00:38:01.56\00:38:06.12 Now, let's fasten you to Matthew 3:13. 00:38:06.15\00:38:10.38 The Bible says, "Then Jesus came from Galilee 00:38:10.41\00:38:13.40 to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 00:38:13.43\00:38:18.09 John would have prevented him, saying, 00:38:18.12\00:38:20.02 'I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?' 00:38:20.05\00:38:23.59 But Jesus answered him, 'Let it be so now, 00:38:23.62\00:38:26.23 for thus it is fitting to fulfill all righteousness.' 00:38:26.26\00:38:30.09 Then he consented and Jesus was baptized." 00:38:30.12\00:38:32.81 Now, I want you to notice something, 00:38:32.84\00:38:34.21 again I want you to follow here. 00:38:34.24\00:38:36.05 Jesus goes to Egypt 00:38:36.08\00:38:37.62 because a guy named Joseph has a dream just like Genesis. 00:38:37.65\00:38:41.63 Jesus leaves Egypt right on time 00:38:41.66\00:38:45.30 and then Jesus is baptized, Jesus is baptized. 00:38:45.33\00:38:50.44 And then after Jesus' baptism, 00:38:50.47\00:38:53.04 the Bible says, in chapter 4 verse 1, 00:38:53.07\00:38:55.82 "Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit 00:38:55.85\00:38:59.56 into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil." 00:38:59.59\00:39:02.52 After Jesus is baptized He goes to the wilderness of temptation. 00:39:02.55\00:39:07.82 Now I want you to notice something. 00:39:07.85\00:39:09.64 Israel was baptized. 00:39:09.71\00:39:12.82 Now you say, "Israel was baptized?" 00:39:12.85\00:39:16.31 Absolutely. 00:39:16.34\00:39:17.71 The Bible says that Israel was baptized 00:39:17.74\00:39:21.53 when they went through the red sea. 00:39:21.56\00:39:23.35 Come with me to 1 Corinthians Chapter 10, 00:39:23.38\00:39:25.70 1 Corinthians Chapter 10. 00:39:25.73\00:39:30.10 1 Corinthians 10:1, 00:39:30.13\00:39:34.32 "I want you to know, brothers 00:39:34.35\00:39:35.72 that all our fathers were all under the cloud 00:39:35.75\00:39:39.55 and all passed through the sea, 00:39:39.58\00:39:42.13 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 00:39:42.16\00:39:47.29 all ate the same spiritual food, all drank the spiritual drink. 00:39:47.32\00:39:50.14 For they drank from the spiritual Rock 00:39:50.17\00:39:51.54 that followed them and the Rock was Christ." 00:39:51.57\00:39:55.50 Notice, 1 Corinthians 10:2 makes it very clear 00:39:55.53\00:40:00.52 that when ancient Israel past through the red sea 00:40:00.55\00:40:03.90 that was their baptism into Moses. 00:40:03.93\00:40:07.09 Does that make sense? Yes or no? 00:40:07.12\00:40:09.62 I'm sure it does. 00:40:09.65\00:40:11.02 So their baptism-- Israel was baptized 00:40:11.05\00:40:14.25 when they went through the red sea. 00:40:14.28\00:40:16.34 Now immediately after Israel went through the red sea, 00:40:16.37\00:40:20.10 where did they go? 00:40:20.13\00:40:21.50 They spent 40 years in the wilderness. 00:40:21.53\00:40:25.37 They spent 40 years in the wilderness. 00:40:25.40\00:40:28.37 So, now I want you to see, Israel-- 00:40:28.40\00:40:31.76 a guy named Joseph has a dream, 00:40:31.79\00:40:34.20 he goes to Egypt, all Israel call-- 00:40:34.23\00:40:36.69 comes with him, he eventually ends up there. 00:40:36.72\00:40:39.60 Israel leaves Egypt. 00:40:39.63\00:40:41.49 When they leave Egypt they are baptized in the red sea. 00:40:41.52\00:40:45.06 And then as soon as they are baptized, 00:40:45.09\00:40:46.95 they go into the wilderness of temptation. 00:40:46.98\00:40:49.97 And Jesus, Jesus, His father Joseph has a dream, 00:40:50.00\00:40:54.06 they go to Egypt. 00:40:54.09\00:40:55.46 Eventually they leave Egypt. 00:40:55.49\00:40:57.90 And after they leave Egypt, 00:40:57.93\00:41:00.11 Jesus is baptized and after His baptism 00:41:00.14\00:41:04.89 Jesus then goes into the wilderness of temptation. 00:41:04.92\00:41:09.71 Now here's the most remarkable thing 00:41:09.74\00:41:12.81 and this is where things get so exciting. 00:41:12.84\00:41:15.38 Jesus comes on the scene 00:41:15.41\00:41:17.85 as the last Adam and the new Israel. 00:41:17.88\00:41:21.75 He is not like the first Adam 00:41:21.78\00:41:23.95 who takes from the tree and sins. 00:41:23.98\00:41:26.17 He's not like the second Adam, Noah 00:41:26.20\00:41:28.97 who drinks from the wine and sins. 00:41:29.00\00:41:32.00 He's not like ancient Israel 00:41:32.03\00:41:33.93 who went into the wilderness of temptation and sinned. 00:41:33.96\00:41:37.11 Jesus is the new Israel and He is the last Adam. 00:41:37.14\00:41:42.29 And He succeeds where every other person had failed. 00:41:42.32\00:41:49.82 In the wilderness of temptation, 00:41:49.85\00:41:51.75 when Satan comes to Him and says, 00:41:51.78\00:41:55.91 "You've been without food for 40 days, 00:41:55.94\00:41:57.77 if you're really God's son turn these stones into bread." 00:41:57.80\00:42:01.37 Jesus does not sin there. 00:42:01.40\00:42:03.59 Jesus does not fall into temptation there. 00:42:03.62\00:42:06.28 Jesus quotes the word of God and says, 00:42:06.31\00:42:09.15 "It is written, man shall not live by bread alone 00:42:09.18\00:42:11.94 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:42:11.97\00:42:16.36 Jesus says, I just think about this, Adam, 00:42:16.39\00:42:20.94 Adam when he was in the garden he had a full belly. 00:42:20.97\00:42:27.15 He didn't eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil 00:42:27.18\00:42:29.53 because he was hungry. 00:42:29.56\00:42:32.95 He ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil 00:42:32.98\00:42:34.63 because he rebelled against God. 00:42:34.66\00:42:39.37 And here's Jesus. He hasn't eaten for 40 days. 00:42:39.40\00:42:47.19 I don't know about you but if I haven't eaten 00:42:47.22\00:42:50.04 for 4 hours, I'm starving. 00:42:50.07\00:42:54.43 And here's Jesus. 00:42:54.46\00:42:55.83 He hasn't eaten for 40 days, 40 days. 00:42:55.86\00:43:02.61 And Satan comes to Him and says, 00:43:02.64\00:43:04.32 "Turn these stones, turn these stones into bread." 00:43:04.35\00:43:08.19 And Jesus says, "No, I'm not gonna do it. 00:43:08.22\00:43:12.51 It is written that man does not live by bread alone 00:43:12.54\00:43:14.92 but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:43:14.95\00:43:18.67 For Jesus serving God and living for God 00:43:18.70\00:43:21.97 was more important than anything else. 00:43:22.00\00:43:23.99 He was the last Adam 00:43:24.02\00:43:26.97 because He is different from all other human beings before him. 00:43:27.00\00:43:31.69 When faced with temptation 00:43:31.72\00:43:33.28 all others have crumpled and given in. 00:43:33.31\00:43:38.30 But Jesus was faithful. 00:43:38.33\00:43:39.70 Three times the temptations come there in Matthew Chapter 4. 00:43:39.73\00:43:43.47 And three times Satan's temptations are rebuffed. 00:43:43.50\00:43:47.40 And Jesus Christ the last Adam, the new Israel is the victor. 00:43:47.43\00:43:52.62 Jesus models the experience of the first Adam, 00:43:52.65\00:43:56.26 of the second Adam, Noah and the new Israel. 00:43:56.29\00:43:59.41 And Jesus goes through their experiences 00:43:59.44\00:44:02.09 but rather than falling He succeeds, 00:44:02.12\00:44:07.01 the new Israel, the last Adam. 00:44:07.04\00:44:11.58 Now, by His obedient life, 00:44:11.61\00:44:16.26 Jesus solved the problem of man's disobedience 00:44:16.29\00:44:20.75 and on the cross He solved the problem of death 00:44:20.78\00:44:23.78 and that leads us to our next important point. 00:44:23.81\00:44:26.24 My friends, Jesus Christ by His life of obedience, 00:44:26.27\00:44:30.08 by being victorious 00:44:30.11\00:44:31.89 where all the other human beings have always failed, 00:44:31.92\00:44:35.47 Jesus Christ took care of the disobedience problem. 00:44:35.50\00:44:40.58 Jesus Christ came off as a victor overcoming 00:44:40.61\00:44:44.49 where every other human being had failed. 00:44:44.52\00:44:48.37 He was a victor where others failed. 00:44:48.40\00:44:50.63 My friend, that's such good news. 00:44:50.66\00:44:52.98 That's such good news because reality for us is this. 00:44:53.01\00:44:58.25 If we're honest, if we're honest 00:44:58.28\00:45:02.81 our own story looks a lot more like the story of Adam 00:45:02.84\00:45:09.70 than the story of Jesus Christ. 00:45:09.73\00:45:14.01 Yeah, I mean isn't that true? 00:45:14.04\00:45:17.21 If I'm looking for a narrative in the Bible 00:45:17.24\00:45:20.47 that reminds me more of my life, 00:45:20.50\00:45:23.84 do I see my life played out more in the life of Jesus, 00:45:23.87\00:45:26.94 or my life played out more in the life of Adam, Noah, Israel? 00:45:26.97\00:45:34.73 You see, my friends, Jesus comes. 00:45:37.06\00:45:41.19 Jesus comes and He passes over the ground 00:45:41.22\00:45:44.86 that Adam passed and He succeeds. 00:45:44.89\00:45:48.47 He passes over the ground that Noah passed and He succeeds. 00:45:48.50\00:45:51.69 He passes over the ground 00:45:51.72\00:45:53.28 that Israel passed and Jesus succeeds. 00:45:53.31\00:45:58.49 Jesus by his life of perfect obedience, 00:45:58.52\00:46:01.85 he took care of the disobedience problem 00:46:01.88\00:46:05.06 and by believing in Him, 00:46:05.09\00:46:07.47 His obedience is credited to your accounts. 00:46:07.50\00:46:12.08 In fact, let's go to Romans Chapter 5. 00:46:15.12\00:46:18.10 This is really, if you wanted one chapter 00:46:18.13\00:46:20.28 that talks about the first Adam and the last Adam 00:46:20.31\00:46:24.08 and it's described in its fullest detail. 00:46:24.11\00:46:26.15 It's probably right there in Romans 5. 00:46:26.18\00:46:27.71 But let's look just in 2 verses Romans 5:18, 19. 00:46:27.74\00:46:32.30 "Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men." 00:46:32.33\00:46:37.11 Notice what it says, 00:46:37.14\00:46:38.51 Adam's one trespass led to condemnation for all of us. 00:46:38.54\00:46:43.58 Adam's one trespass led to condemnation for all of us. 00:46:43.61\00:46:48.47 "So one act of righteousness 00:46:48.50\00:46:51.20 leads to justification and life for all men." 00:46:51.23\00:46:55.26 That's Jesus' act of righteousness 00:46:55.29\00:46:57.14 leads to justification and life. 00:46:57.17\00:47:00.24 In fact, notice the next verse. 00:47:00.27\00:47:01.88 "For by one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, 00:47:01.91\00:47:05.66 so by one man's obedience the many will be made righteous." 00:47:05.69\00:47:08.98 Notice the text says, 00:47:09.01\00:47:10.38 because of Adam's disobedience I was made a sinner, 00:47:10.41\00:47:13.80 you were made a sinner, we were all made sinners. 00:47:13.83\00:47:15.98 So, because of Christ's obedience, the text says, 00:47:16.01\00:47:20.22 we will be made righteous. 00:47:20.25\00:47:23.09 Jesus comes, the second Adam, the last Adam. 00:47:23.12\00:47:28.05 And Jesus by His obedience redeems all of our failures. 00:47:28.08\00:47:32.15 You see, remember, 00:47:32.18\00:47:33.75 who was it that got ourselves 00:47:33.78\00:47:35.68 into this death and disobedience problem? 00:47:35.71\00:47:38.76 It was man. It was man. 00:47:38.79\00:47:43.25 And it was only man that could fix the problem. 00:47:43.28\00:47:47.64 So God comes down to the earth as man 00:47:47.67\00:47:50.21 'cause Adam couldn't fix it, 00:47:50.24\00:47:51.82 Noah couldn't fix it, Israel couldn't fix it. 00:47:51.85\00:47:54.86 There is nobody that could fix it 00:47:54.89\00:47:56.89 and so God comes down and God says-- 00:47:56.92\00:47:59.34 you have seen very clearly that no man can fix this, no man yet. 00:47:59.37\00:48:04.17 So God comes down in the person of Jesus Christ 00:48:04.20\00:48:07.22 and He fixes it by passing over the ground that Adam passed, 00:48:07.25\00:48:11.98 that Noah passed, that all of us have passed 00:48:12.01\00:48:14.92 and instead of sinning and falling He was victorious. 00:48:14.95\00:48:18.53 We were made sinners by one man's disobedience. 00:48:18.56\00:48:22.91 We were condemned by one man's sin. 00:48:22.94\00:48:25.38 But by Christ's obedience we are made righteous 00:48:25.41\00:48:28.71 and by Christ one act of righteousness, 00:48:28.74\00:48:31.81 we are given the gift of life. 00:48:31.84\00:48:34.63 Jesus comes and by His obedience He redeems our disobedience. 00:48:34.66\00:48:39.27 By His death He redeems our death. 00:48:39.30\00:48:42.07 I love what one great Bible scholar said, 00:48:42.10\00:48:47.72 wonderful Christian book called "Desire of Ages." 00:48:47.75\00:48:51.22 This author wrote, "Christ was treated as we deserve, 00:48:51.25\00:48:55.75 that we might be treated as He deserved. 00:48:55.78\00:49:00.25 He was condemned for our sins in which He had no share 00:49:00.28\00:49:05.26 that we might be justified by His righteousness 00:49:05.29\00:49:08.75 in which we have no share. 00:49:08.78\00:49:10.92 He suffered the death which was ours 00:49:10.95\00:49:13.69 that we might receive the life which was His 00:49:13.72\00:49:17.61 with His stripes we are healed, with His stripes we are healed." 00:49:17.64\00:49:24.85 We follow the point, my friends. 00:49:24.88\00:49:27.63 God began this perfect world to the perfect man, 00:49:27.66\00:49:31.85 perfect God, perfect environment 00:49:31.88\00:49:34.50 and that perfect man voted against God. 00:49:34.53\00:49:38.74 He voted in favor of Satan. 00:49:38.77\00:49:43.04 And man had enslaved himself there. 00:49:43.07\00:49:45.42 And we see that all through history, 00:49:45.45\00:49:47.91 man was making the same mistake, 00:49:47.94\00:49:50.87 making the same mistake, making the same mistake. 00:49:50.90\00:49:54.14 Failing to live the life that God had called him to, 00:49:54.17\00:49:57.52 failing to live the life that God had called him to. 00:49:57.55\00:50:00.12 Always falling, always replaying the story of Adam 00:50:00.15\00:50:05.48 until the last Adam comes, the last Adam, Jesus Christ. 00:50:05.51\00:50:09.76 And Jesus Christ, He walks over the ground that Adam walks. 00:50:09.79\00:50:14.79 Jesus walks by the temptation. 00:50:14.82\00:50:18.32 He walked over that ground that Adam walked. 00:50:18.35\00:50:20.54 And Jesus when He was faced with temptation said 00:50:20.57\00:50:22.76 "No, I'm gonna live on God's word not man's word, 00:50:22.79\00:50:25.70 I'm gonna live on God's word not Satan's word." 00:50:25.73\00:50:28.02 Jesus walks over the ground that Israel walked 00:50:28.05\00:50:30.75 and what does Jesus say, Jesus says no to Satan, 00:50:30.78\00:50:34.19 "I'm not gonna follow your ways, I'm gonna walk on God's word, 00:50:34.22\00:50:37.33 I'm gonna be faithful to God's word." 00:50:37.36\00:50:40.35 And then He passes over the ground 00:50:40.38\00:50:42.24 that all of us have passed. 00:50:42.27\00:50:46.84 Instead of falling 00:50:46.87\00:50:49.67 He perfectly obeyed to redeem our disobedience. 00:50:49.70\00:50:55.37 And then Jesus goes to the cross. 00:50:55.40\00:51:00.23 He goes to the cross 00:51:00.26\00:51:04.89 to die the death that each one of us deserves. 00:51:04.92\00:51:12.00 And on the cross, He redeemed our failure. 00:51:16.70\00:51:20.02 You know, it's fascinating, 00:51:20.05\00:51:21.63 whenever I begin this message it makes me a little nervous 00:51:21.66\00:51:25.10 because I say that man got himself into this situation 00:51:25.13\00:51:27.85 and therefore man's got to get himself out. 00:51:27.88\00:51:30.86 I'm little afraid that people 00:51:30.89\00:51:32.26 are gonna tuned out of that point 00:51:32.29\00:51:33.66 and say, "Ah, man can't get himself out." 00:51:33.69\00:51:38.35 And so they'll stop listening. 00:51:38.38\00:51:41.26 But the reality is it's that man got himself in 00:51:41.29\00:51:43.94 and it was man that had to get him out. 00:51:43.97\00:51:46.10 And God showed that nobody had done it, 00:51:46.13\00:51:49.42 that nobody had done it, 00:51:49.45\00:51:50.82 that everybody had played the same story 00:51:50.85\00:51:52.29 as the first Adam until the last Adam, 00:51:52.32\00:51:54.42 the God man Jesus Christ comes. 00:51:54.45\00:51:57.71 And there He redeems our disobedience. 00:51:57.74\00:52:01.46 He redeems our disobedience 00:52:01.49\00:52:04.33 through His perfect life of obedience. 00:52:04.36\00:52:07.52 And He redeems our death through His own death, 00:52:07.55\00:52:11.84 through His own death on the cross, 00:52:11.87\00:52:14.80 through His own death on the cross. 00:52:14.83\00:52:19.22 That's why the Bible says that in Christ, 00:52:19.25\00:52:21.88 if you go to 2 Corinthians 1:20. 00:52:21.91\00:52:25.84 The Bible makes a remarkable statement, 00:52:25.87\00:52:29.15 2 Corinthians 1:20, it says, 00:52:29.18\00:52:32.06 "All the promises of God-- 00:52:32.09\00:52:35.05 All the promises of God find their yes in Him." 00:52:35.08\00:52:40.35 That is their yes in Christ. 00:52:40.38\00:52:43.39 "That is why it is through Him 00:52:43.42\00:52:45.06 that we utter our Amen to the glory of God." 00:52:45.09\00:52:47.81 Now, notice what the text says. 00:52:47.84\00:52:49.21 Every promise that God has every made gets a yes in Jesus. 00:52:49.24\00:52:55.86 It's awesome. 00:52:55.89\00:52:57.37 You read all the promises of the Old Testament, 00:52:57.40\00:52:59.15 God makes all kinds of promises in the Old Testament, 00:52:59.18\00:53:01.71 some good, some bad. 00:53:01.74\00:53:03.11 God promises blessing for disobedience 00:53:03.14\00:53:06.19 and God promises cursing for disobedience. 00:53:06.22\00:53:09.38 So all the promises that God has ever made, 00:53:09.41\00:53:12.74 a blessing for obedience, a curse for disobedience. 00:53:12.77\00:53:15.70 They have all met their fulfillment 00:53:15.73\00:53:17.57 in one person, Jesus Christ. 00:53:17.60\00:53:21.66 One person, Jesus Christ. Why? 00:53:21.69\00:53:24.01 Because Jesus perfectly obeyed, 00:53:24.04\00:53:26.60 so God poured out all of His promises of blessing on Jesus. 00:53:26.63\00:53:31.11 And then on the cross Jesus died for all of our disobedience 00:53:31.14\00:53:35.24 and so on the cross God poured out 00:53:35.27\00:53:37.17 all of His promises of cursing on Jesus Christ. 00:53:37.20\00:53:43.15 And so when that one man, the last Adam, 00:53:43.18\00:53:47.31 God solved the problem of disobedience 00:53:47.34\00:53:50.76 and He solved the problem of death. 00:53:50.79\00:53:53.27 Jesus perfectly obeyed when you hadn't. 00:53:53.30\00:53:56.70 Jesus perfectly obeyed when you didn't. 00:53:56.73\00:54:00.57 Jesus covered the ground of the first Adam, 00:54:00.60\00:54:04.25 of Noah, of Israel. 00:54:04.28\00:54:06.67 Jesus covered the ground of every human being 00:54:06.70\00:54:09.07 and perfectly obeyed. 00:54:09.10\00:54:10.60 Jesus is the last Adam and the new Israel. 00:54:10.63\00:54:15.62 He covered the grounds successfully. 00:54:15.65\00:54:21.34 And then He goes to the cross for our failures. 00:54:21.37\00:54:27.73 And then every promise that God has ever made 00:54:27.76\00:54:32.25 because of Jesus is yes for us. 00:54:32.28\00:54:38.31 Yes for us. 00:54:38.34\00:54:39.97 And of course there is that great condition 00:54:40.00\00:54:43.15 all throughout the Bible, 00:54:43.18\00:54:45.24 that great condition is the condition of faith. 00:54:45.27\00:54:49.40 "For God so loved the world, 00:54:49.43\00:54:51.68 that he gave His only begotten Son 00:54:51.71\00:54:54.12 that who so ever believeth in Him, 00:54:54.15\00:54:56.46 should not perish but have everlasting life." 00:54:56.49\00:54:58.84 It is faith that accesses 00:54:58.87\00:55:01.47 all of the glories of what Christ is done for Humanity. 00:55:01.50\00:55:06.01 It is faith that is the great necessity for us. 00:55:06.04\00:55:12.20 My friends, we need to understand 00:55:12.23\00:55:13.60 yes, we followed like Adam, we're like Adam. 00:55:13.63\00:55:15.84 We disobeyed the covenant. 00:55:15.87\00:55:17.34 We have fallen. 00:55:17.37\00:55:18.83 We have failed. 00:55:18.86\00:55:20.25 We have sinned. 00:55:20.28\00:55:21.65 We've got the problem of death. 00:55:21.68\00:55:23.39 We've got the problem of disobedience. 00:55:23.42\00:55:25.34 It's ours. 00:55:25.37\00:55:29.07 Yet Jesus was victorious. 00:55:29.10\00:55:31.41 He passed over the ground that Adam crossed. 00:55:31.44\00:55:34.04 He passed over the ground Israel crossed 00:55:34.07\00:55:36.10 and He did not fail and He was victorious. 00:55:36.13\00:55:40.26 And so that in Him every promise God ever made is yes. 00:55:40.29\00:55:45.66 But the condition for us today 00:55:45.69\00:55:49.58 is the same as it's always been, will you trust in Jesus? 00:55:49.61\00:55:55.19 Will you trust in Him? 00:55:55.22\00:55:56.59 Will you allow Jesus to take your place, 00:55:56.62\00:56:02.75 to take your place, so that when you are on trail, 00:56:02.78\00:56:07.96 when you face the great judgment, 00:56:07.99\00:56:10.58 when God looks down at you, Jesus has taken your place? 00:56:10.61\00:56:14.22 He sees you. He sees Jesus not you. 00:56:14.25\00:56:17.34 He sees Christ's perfect life, not yours. 00:56:17.37\00:56:20.42 Won't you let Jesus take your place? 00:56:20.45\00:56:23.25 Will you let Jesus be you in the judgment? 00:56:23.28\00:56:27.44 Won't you let Jesus take your place today? 00:56:27.47\00:56:30.91 Put your faith and trust in Him, my friend. 00:56:30.94\00:56:33.98 Put your faith and trust in Him right now. 00:56:34.01\00:56:37.19 Let us pray. 00:56:37.22\00:56:38.80 Our father, we thank You for the cross. 00:56:38.83\00:56:42.35 We thank You for Jesus' perfect life of obedience. 00:56:42.38\00:56:46.86 And, Lord, today we put our trust and our faith in Him. 00:56:46.89\00:56:50.77 Lord Jesus, You obeyed perfectly. 00:56:50.80\00:56:53.09 You were successful where others failed. 00:56:53.12\00:56:56.06 And You died for our lack of success. 00:56:56.09\00:56:58.57 Lord, please give us all your promises in Christ. 00:56:58.60\00:57:02.22 We pray in Jesus name, amen. 00:57:02.25\00:57:07.17 My friend, today, if you've put your trust in Christ, 00:57:07.20\00:57:10.52 He stands in your place. 00:57:10.55\00:57:13.40 Praise God, for the good news. 00:57:13.43\00:57:15.42
