Cookie's Retreat. 00:03:37.51\00:03:39.87 How long have you been doing that? 00:03:39.90\00:03:42.20 This is our fourth year serving clients. 00:03:42.23\00:03:45.98 This is your fourth year. 00:03:46.01\00:03:47.46 And we've been with ASI for two years. 00:03:47.49\00:03:49.48 You've been in ASI for two years? 00:03:49.51\00:03:50.93 Yes. 00:03:50.96\00:03:51.99 Now, you have family that help you out there, 00:03:52.02\00:03:55.16 that help you with your ministry 00:03:55.19\00:03:56.51 or what your husband do there? 00:03:56.54\00:03:58.18 My husband is principal of the local SDA School. 00:03:58.21\00:04:01.01 And, yes, he does help. 00:04:01.04\00:04:02.42 Many times we have children 00:04:02.45\00:04:04.11 that come with their mothers that are school age. 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.40 And if it's safe and appropriate, 00:04:06.43\00:04:08.27 we put them in the school, at our local schools. 00:04:08.30\00:04:10.77 So you put them in the-- you put them in the school there. 00:04:10.80\00:04:13.22 So, now last year you said you had three-- 00:04:13.25\00:04:18.05 I think you said you had three people 00:04:18.08\00:04:20.48 that have come to the Lord 00:04:20.51\00:04:22.08 because of the work you're doing there. 00:04:22.11\00:04:23.35 Yes, we did. 00:04:23.38\00:04:24.42 And this year we've had two more. 00:04:24.45\00:04:26.50 And one of them was actually a 16 year old 00:04:26.53\00:04:28.62 who just recently was baptized. 00:04:28.65\00:04:30.20 So we're very thrilled with that. 00:04:30.23\00:04:31.60 A 16 year old? Yes. 00:04:31.63\00:04:33.66 Now when you work with this ministry, 00:04:33.69\00:04:36.03 is it a easy ministry or is it a difficult ministry? 00:04:36.06\00:04:40.79 Well, it's easy to love the women and children 00:04:40.82\00:04:42.72 but it's very hard obviously to see the pain and suffering 00:04:42.75\00:04:45.81 that they all go through, so kind of a little of both. 00:04:45.84\00:04:49.43 How do you get involved with this? 00:04:49.46\00:04:52.59 That's a long story. 00:04:52.62\00:04:53.99 But a real short one is that 00:04:54.02\00:04:55.49 I was praying the prayer of Jabez 00:04:55.52\00:04:57.23 asking God to expand my territory. 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.19 Be really careful if you ever pray that prayer. 00:04:59.22\00:05:01.76 God will take you very seriously. 00:05:01.79\00:05:04.29 So here I am. 00:05:04.32\00:05:06.03 And here you are 00:05:06.06\00:05:07.12 and you started your ministry four years ago, 00:05:07.15\00:05:08.96 two years ago you were here, you're now at ASI. 00:05:08.99\00:05:11.26 Yes. 00:05:11.29\00:05:12.37 Tell us about some of the stories without, 00:05:12.40\00:05:16.18 you know, of course giving us any names, 00:05:16.21\00:05:17.60 but tell us some of the stories that have happened. 00:05:17.63\00:05:20.34 You and I visited and there was some people 00:05:20.37\00:05:23.17 that have gone to college, on to college and schools. 00:05:23.20\00:05:26.85 Sure. Sure. 00:05:26.88\00:05:28.04 Within the last year we've served, 00:05:28.07\00:05:31.07 actually two gals from the same family. 00:05:31.10\00:05:33.66 There were five children and all that were very abused. 00:05:33.69\00:05:36.80 Father is in prison and mom is on the run 00:05:36.83\00:05:39.31 and the two older girls came to our facility. 00:05:39.34\00:05:43.06 They pretty much didn't have plans in their lives, 00:05:43.09\00:05:45.41 especially the younger of the two. 00:05:45.44\00:05:47.01 She kind of didn't figure she was worth much. 00:05:47.04\00:05:49.09 There wasn't anything she could ever do in her life. 00:05:49.12\00:05:51.64 And now I am very happy to say, 00:05:51.67\00:05:53.49 in two days she flies out to attend one of our universities 00:05:53.52\00:05:56.91 and her sister flew out yesterday to a university. 00:05:56.94\00:05:59.77 So they are moving on in their lives 00:05:59.80\00:06:02.21 because of God's healing 00:06:02.24\00:06:03.35 that they received at Cookie's Retreat. 00:06:03.38\00:06:05.97 Amen. 00:06:06.00\00:06:07.03 So you're working with the people 00:06:07.06\00:06:09.02 at one person at a time. 00:06:09.05\00:06:10.63 You know, some of the ministries that we hear, 00:06:10.66\00:06:13.01 we hear about stories 00:06:13.04\00:06:14.37 about how thousands have come to the Lord at one time. 00:06:14.40\00:06:18.42 But yet there are ministries that reach out 00:06:18.45\00:06:21.47 and touch the women and the children 00:06:21.50\00:06:23.22 as the Bible has called us to do one at a time. 00:06:23.25\00:06:27.57 So now you have there-- you have a daughter, 00:06:27.60\00:06:31.73 does she help you out in your ministry there? 00:06:31.76\00:06:34.31 When she's not at school, yes, she does. 00:06:34.34\00:06:35.90 She volunteers in the child care, 00:06:35.93\00:06:38.05 teaches the arts and crafts sometimes. 00:06:38.08\00:06:39.86 And yeah, my whole family is involved. 00:06:39.89\00:06:41.78 It's kind of a family ministry, so. 00:06:41.81\00:06:44.69 Now, you have talked about the kids there, 00:06:44.72\00:06:51.33 some of them get hope they haven't had. 00:06:51.36\00:06:54.07 Some of them don't have fathers and the Cookie's Retreat, 00:06:54.10\00:06:58.54 you try to help them in that manner too by, 00:06:58.57\00:07:02.72 they have some male mentors occasionally, 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.11 your husband, what they do? 00:07:05.14\00:07:08.18 My husband actually fairly frequently takes the kids, 00:07:08.21\00:07:11.56 the young boys out to baseball games and different activities, 00:07:11.59\00:07:14.64 because most of these kids 00:07:14.67\00:07:15.70 are starving obviously for a father figure. 00:07:15.73\00:07:18.41 And most of the children and the women 00:07:18.44\00:07:20.97 don't have a real great view of men. 00:07:21.00\00:07:23.01 So for them to be able to have time 00:07:23.04\00:07:25.70 with good strong Christian men is very important for them. 00:07:25.73\00:07:28.40 And we have to remember that these women and children 00:07:28.43\00:07:30.83 don't come all from unfaith backgrounds. 00:07:30.86\00:07:35.32 Actually 70% of the women we serve 00:07:35.35\00:07:37.72 are from Seventh-day Adventist homes. 00:07:37.75\00:07:41.32 Thirty percent are from unfaithed 00:07:41.35\00:07:43.91 or other denominations 00:07:43.94\00:07:45.21 and out of that 30% those baptisms came from, so. 00:07:45.24\00:07:49.39 Now this, you talked earlier 00:07:49.42\00:07:51.25 about the two girls who went to college 00:07:51.28\00:07:53.71 and the mother is on the run 00:07:53.74\00:07:56.19 and the father is currently in prison. 00:07:56.22\00:07:59.39 I assume they did not come from a Christian background? 00:07:59.42\00:08:02.47 Oh, yes, they did. 00:08:02.50\00:08:03.94 They attended church every Sabbath. 00:08:03.97\00:08:06.53 He held an office in the church and they thought, 00:08:06.56\00:08:09.00 they were thought off by their community 00:08:09.03\00:08:10.72 as a wonderful Christian family. 00:08:10.75\00:08:12.62 They had a good image going on, 00:08:12.65\00:08:14.36 but there was horrible, horrible abuse 00:08:14.39\00:08:16.17 going on at home for years. 00:08:16.20\00:08:19.48 And so these were the kind of people that you deal with. 00:08:19.51\00:08:22.56 How do you-- How are you able to personally help? 00:08:22.59\00:08:28.32 You know, you must have a strong connection 00:08:28.35\00:08:30.11 with the Lord to be going, 00:08:30.14\00:08:31.43 go through the kind of emotions 00:08:31.46\00:08:32.83 that you have to go through with these women. 00:08:32.86\00:08:36.44 Our ministry was based on prayer 00:08:36.47\00:08:38.37 from the very, very beginning 00:08:38.40\00:08:39.87 and every single day, 00:08:39.90\00:08:41.88 not only do I obviously have my personal time 00:08:41.91\00:08:44.81 that gives me the strength to keep going 00:08:44.84\00:08:46.46 but every day the staff, 00:08:46.49\00:08:48.15 all meet for prayer, every morning in the office. 00:08:48.18\00:08:50.76 And the clients know 00:08:50.79\00:08:52.26 when the office door is closed they are praying, 00:08:52.29\00:08:54.38 so don't knock, unless it's an emergency. 00:08:54.41\00:08:56.80 And then we obviously have worship every morning. 00:08:56.83\00:08:58.84 A lot of the women love that time 00:08:58.87\00:09:00.69 because it teaches them 00:09:00.72\00:09:01.75 how to have their own personal worship 00:09:01.78\00:09:03.25 as well as worship with their children too, so. 00:09:03.28\00:09:06.95 Now the people that you have in your ministry-- 00:09:06.98\00:09:11.91 How many people help you there at Cookie's Retreat? 00:09:11.94\00:09:16.92 Well, we have nine paid staff, 00:09:16.95\00:09:20.10 but we have dozens of volunteers. 00:09:20.13\00:09:22.01 And obviously the volunteers are what help keep us going, 00:09:22.04\00:09:25.72 so lot's of people. 00:09:25.75\00:09:27.79 You have lots of people, so. 00:09:27.82\00:09:29.57 Well, this is an exciting ministry. 00:09:29.60\00:09:31.24 Now, I'm sure some of the people 00:09:31.27\00:09:33.95 who are out there wondering. 00:09:33.98\00:09:35.01 If last year they remember the story, 00:09:35.04\00:09:37.57 there was a woman who was baptized, 00:09:37.60\00:09:39.74 who had cancer and was gonna be here 00:09:39.77\00:09:42.74 but she was too sick to come. 00:09:42.77\00:09:46.13 Can you give us maybe a little update? 00:09:46.16\00:09:49.07 The update on Patty because I did share her name with you. 00:09:49.10\00:09:52.62 As she's still alive, praise the Lord. 00:09:52.65\00:09:55.37 And she actually just flew out yesterday to Norway 00:09:55.40\00:09:59.02 to a health clinic there for treatments for her cancer. 00:09:59.05\00:10:03.27 It did go into remission and it has come back 00:10:03.30\00:10:05.80 but they have good hope for her where she's going. 00:10:05.83\00:10:09.10 Well, let's pray for her. 00:10:09.13\00:10:10.16 Amen. 00:10:10.19\00:10:11.23 Kim, thanks a lot 00:10:11.26\00:10:12.48 and it's wonderful the ministry you're doing there. 00:10:12.51\00:10:15.05 Thank you. Thank you very much. 00:10:15.08\00:10:16.67 We're gonna talk with Rick Fleck 00:10:24.07\00:10:26.97 and some of you may know Rick and some of you may not. 00:10:27.00\00:10:30.71 But, Rick, where are you from? 00:10:30.74\00:10:33.10 We're from Vancouver, Washington. 00:10:33.13\00:10:35.04 Vancouver, Washington. 00:10:35.07\00:10:36.14 There's a lot of people from Washington here. 00:10:36.17\00:10:37.96 I run into many of them. 00:10:37.99\00:10:39.61 And what do you do there in Vancouver? 00:10:39.64\00:10:41.17 We have International Children's Care. 00:10:41.20\00:10:43.40 It's a ASI Organization from the very beginning. 00:10:43.43\00:10:47.49 And we work now in 19 different countries around the world, 00:10:47.52\00:10:51.25 taking care of children. 00:10:51.28\00:10:52.91 Nineteen different countries? 00:10:52.94\00:10:54.42 So now you do this ministry fulltime? 00:10:54.45\00:10:57.00 Yes, fulltime. 00:10:57.03\00:10:58.33 We have about 11 people in our office there in Vancouver. 00:10:58.36\00:11:01.31 Eleven people. 00:11:01.34\00:11:02.57 Now, how often do you get around 00:11:02.60\00:11:05.05 to see these different orphanages 00:11:05.08\00:11:07.82 or children or whatever you have? 00:11:07.85\00:11:09.64 Children's villages we call them. 00:11:09.67\00:11:11.04 Yeah. 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.14 Because we build homes for the children 00:11:12.17\00:11:14.04 and we hired native Adventist couples to take care of them. 00:11:14.07\00:11:18.47 My wife Sharon and I go to these projects all year along. 00:11:18.50\00:11:23.92 And you can imagine 00:11:23.95\00:11:25.00 trying to go to all of these different places. 00:11:25.03\00:11:28.27 We just got back from Cambodia 00:11:28.30\00:11:30.87 and the Philippines a few days ago. 00:11:30.90\00:11:33.59 And we're heading down to the ASI in Panama pretty soon. 00:11:33.62\00:11:38.56 And we'll also visit our project in Nicaragua, 00:11:38.59\00:11:41.30 in El Salvador while we're down there. 00:11:41.33\00:11:43.62 Now, how many children 00:11:43.65\00:11:45.20 do you try to reach and help throughout the world? 00:11:45.23\00:11:49.72 Right now I think there's about 1,200 children 00:11:49.75\00:11:53.06 that are directly under our care. 00:11:53.09\00:11:54.93 Now ASI, how much did we give you last year? 00:11:54.96\00:11:57.83 Twenty thousand dollars came for the ICC Congo Project, 00:11:57.86\00:12:02.74 that's in the Democratic Republic of Congo 00:12:02.77\00:12:06.92 in the middle of Africa. 00:12:06.95\00:12:08.41 Now we've heard a little bit 00:12:08.44\00:12:09.75 in the news lately about the Congo. 00:12:09.78\00:12:11.60 There's been some political elections I think 00:12:11.63\00:12:13.49 that have been going on over there. 00:12:13.52\00:12:14.56 Tremendous strife in that country. 00:12:14.59\00:12:16.19 Over the last few years, 00:12:16.22\00:12:17.63 estimates are that more than four million people 00:12:17.66\00:12:20.29 have lost their lives in that country 00:12:20.32\00:12:22.23 because of the conflict, famine, 00:12:22.26\00:12:25.88 mostly unnecessary loss of life 00:12:25.91\00:12:29.14 because it's disease and things that are happening 00:12:29.17\00:12:31.96 because of political problems. 00:12:31.99\00:12:34.17 Well, I know tonight, Rick, you brought a video 00:12:34.20\00:12:37.67 and you want to talk a little bit about that. 00:12:37.70\00:12:40.24 So what they are gonna do is, we're gonna play the video 00:12:40.27\00:12:42.91 and then maybe you can give us some comments on that video. 00:12:42.94\00:12:46.18 Yeah, we took some video the last time we were there, 00:12:46.21\00:12:48.89 and I wanted to show some of what we're doing 00:12:48.92\00:12:51.17 and some of where the money from ICC, 00:12:51.20\00:12:53.87 from the ASI is going. 00:12:53.90\00:12:57.27 This is on a island in Congo, in the big lake Kivu. 00:12:57.30\00:13:03.02 We've been taking care of children 00:13:03.05\00:13:04.39 in these temporary wooden structures. 00:13:04.42\00:13:07.49 We've built two houses like the one you see there. 00:13:07.52\00:13:10.82 We had to put two families of children 00:13:10.85\00:13:12.86 in each home temporarily 00:13:12.89\00:13:14.19 until we can construct additional homes. 00:13:14.22\00:13:16.88 The money from ASI is to help us build an additional home. 00:13:16.91\00:13:22.04 And so during the times since then 00:13:22.07\00:13:25.79 we've been working on making blocks 00:13:25.82\00:13:27.96 right there on the island. 00:13:27.99\00:13:29.53 It's a very remote place and it's a beautiful construction 00:13:29.56\00:13:33.73 that they are able to do way out there 00:13:33.76\00:13:35.03 in the middle of nowhere. 00:13:35.06\00:13:36.11 Everything has to be taken across the lake 00:13:36.14\00:13:38.07 about four hours in a little boat. 00:13:38.10\00:13:40.57 A lot of hand labor goes into the construction, 00:13:40.60\00:13:44.77 but the children are so excited. 00:13:44.80\00:13:46.56 You know what they like most? 00:13:46.59\00:13:47.62 They like to be able to go school. 00:13:47.65\00:13:49.27 I don't know if your kids like that, but they are so excited. 00:13:49.30\00:13:52.23 When we were there, I laid the ceremonial cornerstone 00:13:52.26\00:13:56.84 and that's the kind of house that we're building. 00:13:56.87\00:13:58.97 Now, while we were there, 00:13:59.00\00:14:00.61 the foundations were complete to some of the houses 00:14:00.64\00:14:04.78 and since then we have I think a still photo 00:14:04.81\00:14:08.39 of some of the houses that are being completed. 00:14:08.42\00:14:11.66 And I understand that at least 00:14:11.69\00:14:13.37 one or two of those houses are complete now, 00:14:13.40\00:14:16.33 and we've moved some children into them. 00:14:16.36\00:14:19.19 Thanks to the offering that ASI has made 00:14:19.22\00:14:22.28 and other generous donors 00:14:22.31\00:14:23.56 that have helped us with this project. 00:14:23.59\00:14:26.20 So right there on that island, 00:14:26.23\00:14:28.93 it's an amazing little construction 00:14:28.96\00:14:30.55 that you can see that they are able to do 00:14:30.58\00:14:33.07 way out there in the middle of nowhere. 00:14:33.10\00:14:35.49 So you built these facilities on an island? 00:14:35.52\00:14:38.13 It's an island and it's called the Patmos, 00:14:38.16\00:14:41.73 ICC's Patmos Children's Village. 00:14:41.76\00:14:44.44 That's what they decided to call it, right there. 00:14:44.47\00:14:48.15 We have been doing some drawing of corn, cashews, 00:14:48.18\00:14:53.81 beans, other things out there, so that they can-- 00:14:53.84\00:14:57.39 Yuca is something, some people refer to it as yuca or cassava. 00:14:57.42\00:15:01.75 This is a mill that we were able to get. 00:15:01.78\00:15:04.12 And that mill is a little industry now. 00:15:04.15\00:15:06.96 Because the village ladies come 00:15:06.99\00:15:08.94 and instead of pounding their own flour, 00:15:08.97\00:15:11.23 they can bring it here 00:15:11.26\00:15:12.55 and in exchange for a little bit of their product, 00:15:12.58\00:15:15.56 we will grind it for them. 00:15:15.59\00:15:17.51 And so that's a way for them 00:15:17.54\00:15:18.84 to earn some money for the operation there. 00:15:18.87\00:15:23.77 This cassava, it's a yuca, they grinded into flour 00:15:23.80\00:15:27.68 and that's one of their main foods 00:15:27.71\00:15:29.78 that they eat on the island. 00:15:29.81\00:15:31.27 As we were leaving, 00:15:31.30\00:15:32.33 the kids stood on the foundation of the house 00:15:32.36\00:15:35.09 that they were going to live in, 00:15:35.12\00:15:36.70 singing in appreciation for what's being done for them. 00:15:36.73\00:15:41.73 Looking forward to the time 00:15:41.76\00:15:42.89 that they can have their very own home 00:15:42.92\00:15:45.03 and their own place that they can lay their head down. 00:15:45.06\00:15:48.20 Well, that's exciting about the work 00:15:48.23\00:15:50.36 that you're doing in this particular project, the Congo. 00:15:50.39\00:15:55.12 How many kids are in this particular village? 00:15:55.15\00:15:59.95 There's about 180 children in that village. 00:15:59.98\00:16:02.44 Now because of the conflict and the strife 00:16:02.47\00:16:05.55 that has been going on there in the Congo 00:16:05.58\00:16:07.64 and the elections coming up, 00:16:07.67\00:16:10.11 the children that we had, 00:16:10.14\00:16:11.94 we have a receiving center 00:16:11.97\00:16:13.30 in the town of Goma which is nearby. 00:16:13.33\00:16:15.33 They have to move all those children out there too, 00:16:15.36\00:16:17.65 and they have just been bunking up together with everybody else 00:16:17.68\00:16:20.45 until some of this dies down. 00:16:20.48\00:16:22.55 But you know this island is kind of a haven 00:16:22.58\00:16:24.49 and they don't hardly ever have any conflict 00:16:24.52\00:16:27.63 right out there on the island, 00:16:27.66\00:16:28.72 that's why we decided to locate there in this case. 00:16:28.75\00:16:31.02 So God opened the door for you guys 00:16:31.05\00:16:33.00 to go out there on this island which is, 00:16:33.03\00:16:35.85 I mean, it's pretty symbolic an island 00:16:35.88\00:16:38.40 that you have for these children 00:16:38.43\00:16:40.08 to get away from the conflict 00:16:40.11\00:16:42.36 that they have been through already, 00:16:42.39\00:16:43.86 probably losing their parents through the process. 00:16:43.89\00:16:46.76 And many of them, 00:16:46.79\00:16:47.82 they have lost their parents through the conflict, 00:16:47.85\00:16:50.12 through disease, through, you name it. 00:16:50.15\00:16:54.63 And you have an opportunity to witness 00:16:54.66\00:16:57.18 and tell these kids about Jesus? 00:16:57.21\00:16:59.20 They are learning to sing all the same songs that you know 00:16:59.23\00:17:02.40 and they speak French there as a second language 00:17:02.43\00:17:05.56 and so most of what they learn is in French, 00:17:05.59\00:17:07.75 but they have even learned some things in English too. 00:17:07.78\00:17:09.62 Now do you speak French? 00:17:09.65\00:17:10.90 No, I have to go through an interpreter 00:17:10.93\00:17:13.15 when we were over there. 00:17:13.18\00:17:14.21 Oh, that's great. 00:17:14.24\00:17:15.48 Well, Rick, thanks a lot 00:17:15.51\00:17:16.78 and may God bless in your ministry 00:17:16.81\00:17:19.51 and continued support. 00:17:19.54\00:17:20.60 Thank you. Thank you. 00:17:20.63\00:17:21.66 We have a booth here, 00:17:21.69\00:17:22.73 and so if people want to come by 00:17:22.76\00:17:24.12 and see some more, we'll be glad to share 00:17:24.15\00:17:26.22 with our other countries that we're into. 00:17:26.25\00:17:27.81 Okay. Thank you. 00:17:27.84\00:17:29.16 Thanks, Terry. 00:17:29.19\00:17:30.46 Now, I got to tell you. 00:17:37.46\00:17:38.67 Rick, he showed up here. 00:17:38.70\00:17:40.61 I hadn't had a chance to talk to him a little bit, 00:17:40.64\00:17:43.11 but I was sure glad when he did. 00:17:43.14\00:17:46.02 And now Virgil is a little bit different. 00:17:46.05\00:17:47.76 I've known Virgil for a while, 00:17:47.79\00:17:49.44 since we're both from the same union. 00:17:49.47\00:17:51.96 Virgil, where are you from? 00:17:51.99\00:17:53.29 Lincoln, Nebraska. What's your vision? 00:18:41.99\00:18:43.99 What do you want to see happen there? 00:18:44.02\00:18:46.03 To take the gospel to the jungle of Peru. 00:18:46.06\00:18:49.87 So now do you have chapels there? 00:18:49.90\00:18:52.69 I imagine you have chapels with little like highways 00:18:52.72\00:18:55.53 that goes by and they are on streets and blocks and stuff, 00:18:55.56\00:18:58.58 like we have here? 00:18:58.61\00:18:59.97 No highways. 00:19:00.00\00:19:02.21 Our highway is the river or the air. 00:19:02.24\00:19:05.80 And we do have chapels with ASI and the Quiet Hour moneys, 00:19:05.83\00:19:11.94 we've been able to build six chapels in the last year 00:19:11.97\00:19:16.49 and have another six or seven in the process of being built. 00:19:16.52\00:19:21.68 How important is it to have a chapel there? 00:19:21.71\00:19:24.00 Do they-- To have a church for the people to go to? 00:19:24.03\00:19:28.07 Well, if you want a congregation 00:19:28.10\00:19:30.51 to be able to flourish and to continue, 00:19:30.54\00:19:33.88 you need to have a place for them 00:19:33.91\00:19:36.38 to worship that they can call their own. 00:19:36.41\00:19:39.11 Now, you have some, some workers, some gospel workers, 00:19:39.14\00:19:42.20 some missionaries that, that work there. 00:19:42.23\00:19:44.67 With again with ASI money and Quite Hour money, 00:19:44.70\00:19:49.16 we have about 24 indigenous missionary volunteers. 00:19:49.19\00:19:55.64 Most of them are couples, some are even families 00:19:55.67\00:19:59.67 that leave their home and go to a different village 00:19:59.70\00:20:04.84 to live and work for a period of at least 18 months 00:20:04.87\00:20:08.63 to establish that congregation 00:20:08.66\00:20:11.54 and then some satellite congregations. 00:20:11.57\00:20:14.16 Now, how do these missionaries, the people, the volunteers, 00:20:14.19\00:20:17.62 how do they get around to the different villages? 00:20:17.65\00:20:20.47 Well, Peru Projects has a mission launch 00:20:20.50\00:20:24.86 and then two airplanes, 00:20:24.89\00:20:27.41 one is an amphibious airplane that can land on the rivers, 00:20:27.44\00:20:32.00 the other one is the Cessna 182. 00:20:32.03\00:20:35.26 And we're able to transport workers 00:20:35.29\00:20:39.31 back and forth as needed. 00:20:39.34\00:20:42.38 So you got the launch too that goes up and down the rivers 00:20:42.41\00:20:45.82 and then you got planes that can take people in that way. 00:20:45.85\00:20:48.51 The launch generally goes to a village 00:20:48.54\00:20:52.52 and stays there for a week, 00:20:52.55\00:20:55.64 maybe to as many as three weeks, 00:20:55.67\00:20:58.58 providing medical health and education, 00:20:58.61\00:21:02.83 their personal hygiene, community hygiene, 00:21:02.86\00:21:08.46 health education type activity. 00:21:08.49\00:21:12.04 So your goal first when you go in there is to make friends, 00:21:12.07\00:21:15.72 help them with the missionary side of things 00:21:15.75\00:21:19.20 and then build them a chapel? 00:21:19.23\00:21:22.90 With the success of the Lord working with us, 00:21:22.93\00:21:26.83 we would hope that a congregation 00:21:26.86\00:21:29.23 would be raised up 00:21:29.26\00:21:30.32 and then of course we want to teach people to sponsor others 00:21:30.35\00:21:36.63 and to work with others and maybe another village nearby. 00:21:36.66\00:21:40.97 So you're getting these-- 00:21:41.00\00:21:42.65 the churches or the chapels that you raise up, 00:21:42.68\00:21:45.31 hopefully they will throw more churches. 00:21:45.34\00:21:48.92 That's for sure. 00:21:48.95\00:21:50.50 It's sort of a spoke and wheel 00:21:50.53\00:21:55.67 or hub and wheel method 00:21:55.70\00:21:57.41 where you have a central village 00:21:57.44\00:21:59.11 and then you can go to outline villages 00:21:59.14\00:22:02.80 from where you're living 00:22:02.83\00:22:04.80 without having to establish a new base. 00:22:04.83\00:22:07.82 So you have their people helping their own people. 00:22:07.85\00:22:11.17 That's the idea. Wow. 00:22:11.20\00:22:14.56 And this has been successful. 00:22:14.59\00:22:18.15 We've had some changes in personnel 00:22:18.18\00:22:20.57 over the last year and half, 00:22:20.60\00:22:22.88 but for the most part people stay with the commitment 00:22:22.91\00:22:28.19 and learn to witness in a more effective way. 00:22:28.22\00:22:33.06 And then they are going to transmit 00:22:33.09\00:22:36.99 that knowledge to these new believers. 00:22:37.02\00:22:40.55 Now, this project, is it pretty easy? 00:22:40.58\00:22:43.56 You don't have much troubles, 00:22:43.59\00:22:44.72 you're just, you're able to raise all the funds you need 00:22:44.75\00:22:48.24 and go over there and do all the missionary work 00:22:48.27\00:22:50.34 and it's a happy skippy life. 00:22:50.37\00:22:52.78 Well, God is good and God does provide, 00:22:52.81\00:22:56.40 there's no doubt about that. 00:22:56.43\00:22:58.48 With all of your help and the Quiet Hour 00:22:58.51\00:23:01.98 and various other individual donors 00:23:02.01\00:23:05.49 that we have a very modest budget. 00:23:05.52\00:23:09.87 We have a pilot and his wife that have been there since 1998 00:23:09.90\00:23:16.19 and then another administrative person 00:23:16.22\00:23:20.45 to help lighten the load and carry the burden. 00:23:20.48\00:23:24.96 Well, that's sounds like an exciting ministry. 00:23:24.99\00:23:28.26 How many-- do you have an idea 00:23:28.29\00:23:29.49 of how many people you can reach on an annual basis? 00:23:29.52\00:23:32.99 Well, the villages vary in size, 00:23:33.02\00:23:36.79 from a very few to maybe several hundred. 00:23:36.82\00:23:41.56 And so at this point in the year 00:23:41.59\00:23:46.96 we've baptized several hundred people. 00:23:46.99\00:23:51.58 I don't have the exact count but it's several hundred people 00:23:51.61\00:23:55.54 when you're baptizing 25 to 50 people per baptism. 00:23:55.57\00:24:02.36 The Lord has been good. 00:24:02.39\00:24:04.57 That sounds like an exciting ministry. 00:24:04.60\00:24:07.35 Well, we've enjoyed it. 00:24:07.38\00:24:10.18 Clyde Peters was our founding sponsor. 00:24:10.21\00:24:14.56 He had been a missionary there 00:24:14.59\00:24:16.25 for in the '60s and early '70s and he's a pilot. 00:24:16.28\00:24:21.31 And he's been very inspirational to all of us 00:24:21.34\00:24:25.31 that work with the Peru Project. 00:24:25.34\00:24:27.45 Thanks a lot, Virgil. 00:24:27.48\00:24:29.32 Good evening. 00:27:51.51\00:27:53.10 It's exciting to be here tonight with our ASI family 00:27:53.13\00:27:56.95 and this is one of my favorite parts. 00:27:56.98\00:27:59.57 It's doing interviews. 00:27:59.60\00:28:01.12 Finding out what is going on 00:28:01.15\00:28:03.14 around the world and also right here. 00:28:03.17\00:28:05.99 And tonight I've got the privilege 00:28:06.02\00:28:08.12 of introducing you to some fine people. 00:28:08.15\00:28:10.57 And who do we have here this evening with me. 00:28:10.60\00:28:13.19 I'm Barbara Neher. 00:28:13.22\00:28:15.23 And I'm Jack Neher. 00:28:15.26\00:28:16.82 Where do you guys live? 00:28:16.85\00:28:18.76 Cadiz, Kentucky. 00:28:18.79\00:28:20.53 Western Kentucky. I'm so excited. 00:31:04.20\00:31:07.16 I'm so happy for you. 00:31:07.19\00:31:11.83 The Lord's work. 00:31:11.86\00:31:15.66 You know we can't all go out 00:31:15.69\00:31:18.25 and do things like go to India or go to Africa. 00:31:18.28\00:31:23.09 But we have-- excuse me. 00:31:23.12\00:31:26.36 We have a mission field right in our own backyard 00:31:26.39\00:31:30.31 and this is the way to reach it. 00:31:30.34\00:31:32.63 And by doing this, we not only help children 00:31:32.66\00:31:35.93 that are in a desperate need. 00:31:35.96\00:31:38.20 This is at a time 00:31:38.23\00:31:39.30 that they are at the lowest point in their lives 00:31:39.33\00:31:41.60 and when they are taken from their homes, 00:31:41.63\00:31:43.39 they can take nothing with them when it's in matte. 00:31:43.42\00:31:46.09 So when they come out of there, 00:31:46.12\00:31:47.38 it's just whatever they have on their little bodies. 00:31:47.41\00:31:50.09 And then they are taken and they are disinfected basically. 00:31:50.12\00:31:53.84 And so they need to have something 00:31:53.87\00:31:56.21 that they can call their very own. 00:31:56.24\00:31:59.86 Now tell me how long you have been in this little project 00:31:59.89\00:32:04.87 that you've got going on? 00:32:04.90\00:32:06.82 Well, we were doing it for about a year 00:32:06.85\00:32:09.53 and it was growing and it's developing beautifully. 00:32:09.56\00:32:14.85 And like I said the Lord had a plan 00:32:14.88\00:32:17.43 and when we were invited to do 3ABN, 00:32:17.46\00:32:20.90 it exploded and so we're just only about 18 months old. 00:32:20.93\00:32:24.95 Only 18 months old 00:32:24.98\00:32:26.99 and you're in all these states and all these countries. 00:32:27.02\00:32:30.07 Well, God is really blessing. 00:32:30.10\00:32:31.65 Yes, He is. 00:32:31.68\00:32:32.72 Now I visited with Barbara and Jack on the phone 00:32:32.75\00:32:35.26 a few weeks ago and I was really touched. 00:32:35.29\00:32:38.05 Anything that has to do with young people 00:32:38.08\00:32:40.09 really it touches my heart. 00:32:40.12\00:32:42.35 And you told me a very special story, 00:32:42.38\00:32:45.17 would you share that with our family here? 00:32:45.20\00:32:47.43 One of the case workers told us 00:32:47.46\00:32:49.43 that as she went out to pick up these children, 00:32:49.46\00:32:51.75 there was a sister and a brother, 00:32:51.78\00:32:53.58 they were about 10 and 14. 00:32:53.61\00:32:56.22 And when they saw the bag 00:32:56.25\00:32:58.66 and the one thing we didn't mention 00:32:58.69\00:33:01.13 was the personal care items that are in the side pocket 00:33:01.16\00:33:05.20 and it has a brush, toothpaste, toothbrush and all of that. 00:33:05.23\00:33:08.87 Well, the older one spotted that and he opened this up, 00:33:08.90\00:33:14.94 the pocket because that was the easiest thing to get into 00:33:14.97\00:33:18.06 and he looked in there and he saw the toothbrush 00:33:18.09\00:33:20.32 and he says, oh, great. 00:33:20.35\00:33:21.95 I get my own toothbrush. 00:33:21.98\00:33:23.40 I don't have to share anymore. 00:33:23.43\00:33:26.29 And you see we don't realize the simplest little things, 00:33:26.32\00:33:30.24 how much they mean. 00:33:30.27\00:33:32.05 And this bag itself is very important 00:33:32.08\00:33:35.22 because they get moved quite frequently from home to home 00:33:35.25\00:33:39.76 and this is their luggage 00:33:39.79\00:33:42.08 and it gives them a sense of ownership. 00:33:42.11\00:33:45.21 Jack, you look like you have something to tell us. 00:33:45.24\00:33:47.01 Well, just recently Barbara heard from a lady 00:33:47.04\00:33:50.14 who used to be a supervisor for the CPS in New York City 00:33:50.17\00:33:54.44 and she said, this bag was of great importance. 00:33:54.47\00:33:58.66 This gives that child some esteem 00:33:58.69\00:34:01.16 that most of the time only have to carry 00:34:01.19\00:34:03.82 the things in as the garbage sack. 00:34:03.85\00:34:06.85 Well, you're telling me 00:34:06.88\00:34:08.80 then we can all be involved in this outreach opportunity. 00:34:08.83\00:34:12.69 Yes, your church, your pathfinders, 00:34:12.72\00:34:16.25 we have a 10 year old girl that is sewing quilts for us. 00:34:16.28\00:34:20.82 How old is she? 00:34:20.85\00:34:22.17 She's 10 years old and she's on her fifth quilt. 00:34:22.20\00:34:25.01 So we all can do this. 00:34:25.04\00:34:26.33 Pathfinders and juniors, I mean they can all become involved. 00:34:26.36\00:34:31.35 Amen. 00:34:31.38\00:34:32.45 Well, I want to encourage 00:34:32.48\00:34:33.91 our ASI family to stop by your booth 00:34:33.94\00:34:36.29 because you have a lot more information 00:34:36.32\00:34:38.60 and it's a worthy project. 00:34:38.63\00:34:40.36 And God bless you, guys, and welcome to our ASI family. 00:34:40.39\00:34:43.89 Thank you. In the Philippines. 00:44:05.64\00:44:07.40 And so you decided that if you could do it together, 00:44:07.43\00:44:10.25 you might continue this project together, is that correct? 00:44:10.28\00:44:13.78 That's kind of worked out that way. 00:44:13.81\00:44:15.51 It kind of worked out that way. 00:44:15.54\00:44:17.20 So since the Philippines, what's happened? 00:44:17.23\00:44:20.12 Well, we have done now 00:44:20.15\00:44:22.36 four evangelistic campaigns working together 00:44:22.39\00:44:26.64 as a team in the Dominican Republic, 00:44:26.67\00:44:29.91 the Philippines and Ukraine. 00:44:29.94\00:44:33.81 Now you have been in several countries, 00:44:33.84\00:44:36.29 they are all not warm, is that correct? 00:44:36.32\00:44:39.90 That's right. That's right. 00:44:39.93\00:44:41.90 Now, Ray, tell me 00:44:41.93\00:44:43.75 what has been the biggest blessing in your life 00:44:43.78\00:44:46.33 by being involved with Harold 00:44:46.36\00:44:48.74 co-preaching using the New Beginnings. 00:44:48.77\00:44:51.37 And tell us what the New Beginnings is? 00:44:51.40\00:44:53.47 Just explain that a little bit for our audience? 00:44:53.50\00:44:55.56 Well, The New Beginnings is the series of lessons that ASI 00:44:55.59\00:44:59.58 and It Is Written together produced. 00:44:59.61\00:45:03.25 And they're really designed for lay members 00:45:03.28\00:45:06.59 to use in evangelist series. 00:45:06.62\00:45:11.23 And if we can do it, anyone can do it. 00:45:11.26\00:45:13.75 So that's really a nice thing about New Beginnings. 00:45:13.78\00:45:18.38 Well, now, when we were visiting 00:45:18.41\00:45:20.85 behind the stage here for a little bit, 00:45:20.88\00:45:23.21 you told me that there are other things 00:45:23.24\00:45:25.19 that were involved in getting this together. 00:45:25.22\00:45:27.43 What were some of things, Harold, 00:45:27.46\00:45:28.99 that you were telling me about? 00:45:29.02\00:45:30.92 Well, in order to make the presentation 00:45:30.95\00:45:34.91 really effective and really meet needs of the people, 00:45:34.94\00:45:39.29 we found out that the health component 00:45:39.32\00:45:42.61 is probably the most important aspect of bringing people there 00:45:42.64\00:45:48.00 and having them through better appreciation of their health, 00:45:48.03\00:45:53.91 sense their need of God. 00:45:53.94\00:45:56.90 That's good. 00:45:56.93\00:45:57.96 So the health message is definitely the right arm, 00:45:57.99\00:46:00.70 isn't that right? 00:46:00.73\00:46:01.76 It gets us in places sometimes 00:46:01.79\00:46:03.38 that other things won't get us into. 00:46:03.41\00:46:05.10 Yes. 00:46:05.13\00:46:07.27 The health materials that we use are also lay friendly. 00:46:07.30\00:46:14.38 They can be done by someone 00:46:14.41\00:46:16.15 who is not a nurse or physician or anything of that kind. 00:46:16.18\00:46:20.02 And they were developed in a project 00:46:20.05\00:46:22.74 that was co-ventured by ASI and Wildwood 00:46:22.77\00:46:28.65 and primarily with Chuck Cleveland 00:46:28.68\00:46:31.72 in his, her ministries 00:46:31.75\00:46:33.46 and they are very effective ways 00:46:33.49\00:46:36.03 of giving people an insight 00:46:36.06\00:46:39.31 into the health issues that really affect them. 00:46:39.34\00:46:42.99 It really opens the door in a non threatening way. 00:46:43.02\00:46:45.75 It allows you to develop friendships and confidence. 00:46:45.78\00:46:48.49 Right. 00:46:48.52\00:46:49.66 Let's go back to your preaching. 00:46:49.69\00:46:52.55 Knowing that you had not preached before, 00:46:52.58\00:46:55.30 was it easy to use this tool 00:46:55.33\00:46:57.67 as far as the New Beginnings was concerned? 00:46:57.70\00:47:00.95 Well, having conducted Revelation 00:47:00.98\00:47:02.76 and Daniel seminars previous, 00:47:02.79\00:47:06.04 I found The New Beginnings lessons 00:47:06.07\00:47:08.12 to be just an excellent tool. 00:47:08.15\00:47:13.63 I thought they were very, very-- 00:47:13.66\00:47:15.88 I wouldn't say easy to use but they were, 00:47:15.91\00:47:19.97 they are designed so that you can do it with a minimum 00:47:20.00\00:47:23.35 because remember you meet every night. 00:47:23.38\00:47:26.09 So it was every morning 00:47:26.12\00:47:27.69 you were preparing for that evening. 00:47:27.72\00:47:30.24 They're world class graphics, 00:47:30.27\00:47:32.51 they are the best graphics that are available 00:47:32.54\00:47:34.51 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:47:34.54\00:47:36.54 And you know they are fascinating to people. 00:47:36.57\00:47:42.20 They see them presented 00:47:42.23\00:47:44.13 in their own language on the screen 00:47:44.16\00:47:47.00 and it's something that makes a powerful impact with them. 00:47:47.03\00:47:50.70 The graphics really reinforce. 00:47:50.73\00:47:53.19 Well, I happened to be with you two 00:47:53.22\00:47:55.51 when we were in the Philippines 00:47:55.54\00:47:56.62 because we were part of that group. 00:47:56.65\00:47:58.78 And I can remember, 00:47:58.81\00:48:00.50 I actually had the opportunity to go to Harold and Ray sight, 00:48:00.53\00:48:04.63 and I was so blessed because here were two gentlemen 00:48:04.66\00:48:08.31 that were sharing Christ using this, this wonderful tool. 00:48:08.34\00:48:12.69 And I just was wondering, is there a particular story 00:48:12.72\00:48:16.72 or an event that happened 00:48:16.75\00:48:18.40 that you would like to share with our ASI family 00:48:18.43\00:48:20.86 using The New Beginnings? 00:48:20.89\00:48:26.50 When we were in the Philippines, 00:48:26.53\00:48:28.57 we were in a rather primitive situation 00:48:28.60\00:48:32.47 and we were getting ready 00:48:32.50\00:48:33.73 and getting the material set up and the equipment set up 00:48:33.76\00:48:38.83 and it was in a rural area 00:48:38.86\00:48:40.48 and just before the meetings began 00:48:40.51\00:48:44.53 here came a pig just running-- 00:48:44.56\00:48:47.99 I don't know, I never heard of a homing pig before 00:48:48.02\00:48:50.77 but this was a homing pig 00:48:50.80\00:48:52.54 and he ran through the meeting place 00:48:52.57\00:48:55.49 and into the yard that was right close by where they were. 00:48:55.52\00:48:59.83 But it was a fascinating thing and in that series of meetings, 00:48:59.86\00:49:05.37 we were just one little part of about 300 total meetings 00:49:05.40\00:49:11.42 and about 10 or 15 ASI teams that were involved, 00:49:11.45\00:49:15.74 that resulted in a baptism of over 3,000 people in one day. 00:49:15.77\00:49:21.64 It was such a blessing to be there. 00:49:21.67\00:49:24.26 Well, as we end here, Ray, 00:49:24.29\00:49:26.36 is there some words of encouragement 00:49:26.39\00:49:28.39 that you could share with us? 00:49:28.42\00:49:30.62 Well, I think, Donna, we see Harold and I 00:49:30.65\00:49:33.88 that this is really an extension 00:49:33.91\00:49:36.34 of what ASI shared with us. 00:49:36.37\00:49:39.88 And the reason that ASI exists is to promote lay involvement 00:49:39.91\00:49:44.34 and so I remember 00:49:44.37\00:49:46.59 and I see Henry and Robin down here in front. 00:49:46.62\00:49:48.76 And I remember the first convention and I said, 00:49:48.79\00:49:50.81 if those guys can do it, I can do it. 00:49:50.84\00:49:53.17 And so all of us here tonight, 00:49:53.20\00:49:55.36 we can be active partners with God 00:49:55.39\00:49:57.67 in sharing around the world. 00:49:57.70\00:49:59.40 Well, thank you. Soon coming of Jesus. 00:49:59.43\00:50:01.14 Thank you so much. Thank you. 00:50:01.17\00:50:03.11 Well, I have a tall gentleman here with me tonight. 00:50:09.12\00:50:12.38 And I just had the privilege of meeting you, Michael. 00:50:12.41\00:50:15.21 Who are you? 00:50:15.24\00:50:16.27 Well, my name is Michael Smith. 00:50:16.30\00:50:17.71 I'm most recently working in Country Life Restaurant 00:50:17.74\00:50:20.21 and now I'm working at Wildwood Health Retreat in Iron City. 00:50:20.24\00:50:23.86 And where are you living for us that don't know? 00:50:23.89\00:50:26.84 Well, where I'm living right now? 00:50:26.87\00:50:28.14 Right now? 00:50:28.17\00:50:29.20 In Iron City, Tennessee. 00:50:29.23\00:50:30.98 In Iron City, Tennessee? 00:50:31.01\00:50:33.07 I just moved from Wildwood. 00:50:33.10\00:50:34.38 Just moved from Wildwood. 00:50:34.41\00:50:35.65 Okay. Okay. 00:50:35.68\00:50:36.71 Michael, you told me your personal testimony tonight. 00:50:36.74\00:50:40.12 And I would love for you to share 00:50:40.15\00:50:42.16 a little bit with us tonight about what happened to you. 00:50:42.19\00:50:45.72 Well, about, not quite 3 years ago 00:50:45.75\00:50:48.83 at institution at Wildwood Health Retreat 00:50:48.86\00:50:51.18 that I'm now working at. 00:50:51.21\00:50:52.29 I was-- I went there to get off drugs. 00:50:52.32\00:50:55.23 I overdosed on a combination of pills and my parents-- 00:50:55.26\00:51:00.70 the doctors told my parents 00:51:00.73\00:51:01.87 that I probably wouldn't make it 00:51:01.90\00:51:03.00 or turn out to be a vegetable, 00:51:03.03\00:51:04.48 but praise the Lord I made it 00:51:04.51\00:51:05.89 and they send me to an Adventist rehab 00:51:05.92\00:51:08.06 and it changed my life. 00:51:08.09\00:51:09.78 My mind got restored 00:51:09.81\00:51:11.36 through reading God's word in about 2 weeks. 00:51:11.39\00:51:14.84 Yes. Praise the Lord. 00:51:14.87\00:51:17.61 Michael, if you would tell us, how old are you? 00:51:20.95\00:51:23.84 I'm 25. 00:51:23.87\00:51:24.90 You were raised in a Seventh-day Adventist home? 00:51:24.93\00:51:27.08 Yes, I was. 00:51:27.11\00:51:28.21 You went to Seventh-day Adventist schools? 00:51:28.24\00:51:29.82 Yes, I did. 00:51:29.85\00:51:30.89 And what happened to you during this time? 00:51:30.92\00:51:33.51 Well, just some of the wrong influences. 00:51:33.54\00:51:36.15 I got attracted to the wrong things 00:51:36.18\00:51:39.02 and I liked excitement more than going to church 00:51:39.05\00:51:42.03 and that kind of grew and blossomed into something 00:51:42.06\00:51:45.15 that yielded some really bad fruit 00:51:45.18\00:51:47.56 and some bad curiosities. 00:51:47.59\00:51:49.90 So Wildwood has been an instrumental part 00:51:49.93\00:51:52.46 in changing your life? 00:51:52.49\00:51:53.76 Yes, it has. 00:51:53.79\00:51:54.82 Now you're involved in a mission. 00:51:54.85\00:51:55.92 Yes. 00:51:55.95\00:51:56.98 An exciting opportunity for us to be involved with. 00:51:57.01\00:52:00.14 I would like for you to tell us what is happening in Thailand. 00:52:00.17\00:52:03.05 And I believe we have some pictures to share tonight also. 00:52:03.08\00:52:04.97 Yes, we do. 00:52:05.00\00:52:06.43 You can go ahead and show the first picture while I talk. 00:52:06.46\00:52:09.39 This is what the jungles look like in Burma and Thailand. 00:52:09.42\00:52:15.18 Two and half years ago, 00:52:15.21\00:52:16.83 I got introduced to a special group of people 00:52:16.86\00:52:19.89 known as the Karen 00:52:19.92\00:52:20.95 who once lived in the mountains of Burma. 00:52:20.98\00:52:23.86 And after World War II 00:52:23.89\00:52:25.59 they were pushed out of their home country 00:52:25.62\00:52:27.03 all the way across the river to Thailand. 00:52:27.06\00:52:29.12 And now they are basically divided up into three groups. 00:52:29.15\00:52:31.83 The third group is the one that I have been working with 00:52:31.86\00:52:35.27 and they basically live life on the run. 00:52:35.30\00:52:38.57 And jungle full of four types of malaria, dengue fever, 00:52:38.60\00:52:42.79 yellow fever, dysentery, cholera and HIV. 00:52:42.82\00:52:45.41 Oh, my. 00:52:45.44\00:52:46.59 So their living conditions are not very good. 00:52:46.62\00:52:48.76 I think the other pictures that we have will show that for us. 00:52:48.79\00:52:51.09 This is a refugee camp 00:52:51.12\00:52:53.03 and that's the second largest group of the Karen 00:52:53.06\00:52:55.97 and living standards there are not best, 00:52:56.00\00:52:58.61 a lot of them escaped out of the refugee camp 00:52:58.64\00:53:00.35 to live on the run. 00:53:00.38\00:53:02.49 Okay. And this is another picture. 00:53:02.52\00:53:04.97 This is the typical Karen, 00:53:05.00\00:53:07.39 typical scene you will see in the jungle. 00:53:07.42\00:53:09.36 A Karen woman with some children, 00:53:09.39\00:53:11.38 most of them probably not her own because, 00:53:11.41\00:53:13.48 what will happen, the soldiers will come into the villages 00:53:13.51\00:53:15.75 and burn down the houses 00:53:15.78\00:53:17.38 and usually shoot the older gentlemen 00:53:17.41\00:53:20.86 and that's why there's a lot of orphans 00:53:20.89\00:53:23.48 that are left wandering, 00:53:23.51\00:53:24.75 they will find a family to join a lot of the times. 00:53:24.78\00:53:27.64 Okay. And our next picture. 00:53:27.67\00:53:29.79 This is me and James Hartley who was up here earlier. 00:53:29.82\00:53:32.66 Last July we went to Thailand. 00:53:32.69\00:53:35.02 We trekked up the mountain 00:53:35.05\00:53:37.06 about 10 hour hike into Thailand 00:53:37.09\00:53:40.49 and to a newly formed church. 00:53:40.52\00:53:43.24 And 5 years ago there was no Adventists 00:53:43.27\00:53:45.86 in Thailand, in this area. 00:53:45.89\00:53:48.28 And now there are over 100, 4 churches, 2 schools 00:53:48.31\00:53:53.11 and the outcome of these schools is amazing. 00:53:53.14\00:53:56.50 The heathen round about, 00:53:56.53\00:53:57.94 see the results from these Adventist run schools. 00:53:57.97\00:54:02.71 So they send their children there 00:54:02.74\00:54:03.92 and they teach them our doctrines 00:54:03.95\00:54:05.61 and these are two of the orphan children 00:54:05.64\00:54:10.51 that I grew especially closed 00:54:10.54\00:54:12.40 to up in the mountains of Burma. 00:54:12.43\00:54:14.71 And our next picture. 00:54:14.74\00:54:16.36 This is one of the hospitals that was set up in the jungle. 00:54:16.39\00:54:20.33 And this man here has malaria, 00:54:20.36\00:54:22.58 one of the worst kind malaria PF, this one too. 00:54:22.61\00:54:28.43 And our next picture. 00:54:28.46\00:54:29.98 Yes, this is the most recent church 00:54:30.01\00:54:33.42 that was formed in Thailand along the border. 00:54:33.45\00:54:36.93 This is me and James Hartley last July 00:54:36.96\00:54:38.93 with that church group there. 00:54:38.96\00:54:41.68 Now, I'd like to share a short story. 00:54:41.71\00:54:45.19 You know, they go the schools and a lot of times 00:54:45.22\00:54:48.06 we go to schools and things don't stick. 00:54:48.09\00:54:49.93 When I was walking around and I was kind of in a rush 00:54:49.96\00:54:53.07 and I dropped a 1000 baht which is worth quite a bit of money. 00:54:53.10\00:54:56.51 The ratio to America dollars is about 50 to 1. 00:54:56.54\00:55:01.12 And I dropped a 1000 baht on the ground 00:55:01.15\00:55:02.82 and a little orphan girl ran up and gave it to me 00:55:02.85\00:55:06.06 and several hours later and said you dropped this. 00:55:06.09\00:55:08.53 Well, she could have kept that and I asked her why she didn't. 00:55:08.56\00:55:11.10 I had a translator and she said that 00:55:11.13\00:55:12.71 she was taught in one of our schools 00:55:12.74\00:55:14.35 "thou shall not steal." 00:55:14.38\00:55:15.95 Oh, praise the Lord for that. 00:55:15.98\00:55:18.47 So there really wasn't a lot 00:55:18.50\00:55:21.05 that was happening until 5 years ago. 00:55:21.08\00:55:22.93 Is that correct? 00:55:22.96\00:55:24.00 Yes, yes. Okay. 00:55:24.03\00:55:25.55 And how has this work progress so rapidly? 00:55:25.58\00:55:29.42 Well, when the people hear that it spreads fast 00:55:29.45\00:55:32.62 but there's in ratio to the amount of people 00:55:32.65\00:55:36.81 that are accepting the truth. 00:55:36.84\00:55:38.34 The amount of lay workers that are working there is very few. 00:55:38.37\00:55:40.92 So a lot of people don't know about this. 00:55:40.95\00:55:42.80 This is probably the first time 00:55:42.83\00:55:44.57 a lot of people are hearing about this right now. 00:55:44.60\00:55:46.77 And you know the devil has really wanted to mess this up. 00:55:46.80\00:55:51.00 I've seen him working overseas and he's worked here too. 00:55:51.03\00:55:54.29 I'm one of the few people that know about this. 00:55:54.32\00:55:56.77 And I've gone there three times. 00:55:56.80\00:55:58.78 The second time I went there, well, I was preparing to go, 00:55:58.81\00:56:02.03 my car got stolen, 00:56:02.06\00:56:03.34 so I couldn't drive to different churches to go 00:56:03.37\00:56:05.78 and share my presentation to raise money. 00:56:05.81\00:56:08.10 But I was able to go 00:56:08.13\00:56:09.51 just a few months later than expected. 00:56:09.54\00:56:11.83 This last time that I went, 00:56:11.86\00:56:13.52 three days before my mission trip, I was driving 00:56:13.55\00:56:16.68 and actually driving the man out to Iron City 00:56:16.71\00:56:18.94 to go to a rehab. 00:56:18.97\00:56:20.31 And I had a misunderstanding with the police. 00:56:20.34\00:56:23.55 Make a long story short. 00:56:23.58\00:56:25.18 They kept my car and all of my mission trip money, 00:56:25.21\00:56:28.31 all the $5,000, three days before my mission trip. 00:56:28.34\00:56:31.22 And actually went to jail and spent the night in jail. 00:56:31.25\00:56:33.59 And I'm thinking Lord how is this-- What was going on here? 00:56:33.62\00:56:35.95 I've got to go to Thailand, 00:56:35.98\00:56:37.01 I've got to take this money with me. 00:56:37.04\00:56:38.97 These children need to be ministered too, 00:56:39.00\00:56:41.18 but you know the Lord can work what I did in six-- 00:56:41.21\00:56:45.90 or the Lord did in 6 months, he can do in three days. 00:56:45.93\00:56:49.08 So I ended up going over there with more money than I did, 00:56:49.11\00:56:52.96 than I had originally. 00:56:52.99\00:56:54.21 Praise the Lord, Michael. How exciting? 00:56:54.24\00:56:56.90 So we all can be a part of this work, can't we? 00:56:56.93\00:56:58.97 Yes. Yes, you can. 00:56:59.00\00:57:00.32 And if we have more questions, Michael, 00:57:00.35\00:57:02.01 where are you going to be, what booth area? 00:57:02.04\00:57:04.09 I'll be at the Wildwood Health Retreat 00:57:04.12\00:57:06.09 and the number there is 931-724-6706. 00:57:06.12\00:57:11.46 Thank you, Michael, for sharing with us tonight. 00:57:11.49\00:57:13.90 What a testimony that he has for us. 00:57:13.93\00:57:16.05 Thank you. 00:57:16.08\00:57:17.27
