has been touched with death.

going to grip your attention

One day there was a young man

who was walking
through the cemetery

and looking at the epitaphs or
the writings on the tombstones.

I don't know how
many of you enjoy watching
00:06:01.80\00:06:04.25
or walking through cemeteries
00:06:04.28\00:06:05.93
and looking at what's
written on the tombstones
00:06:05.96\00:06:08.08
but I do, because I
like to see what's on there.
00:06:08.11\00:06:13.39
Well, he came across
one of those tombstones
00:06:13.42\00:06:16.82
and in he was
intrigued by what was written on
00:06:16.85\00:06:20.44
and it said the following,
"Stop my friend, as you go by.
00:06:20.47\00:06:25.97
As you are now, so once was I.
00:06:26.00\00:06:30.37
As I am now, you soon shall be.
00:06:30.40\00:06:32.46
So, prepare
yourself to follow me."
00:06:32.49\00:06:37.78
As that young man
contemplated that message,

he decided to write a
response and so stooping down
00:06:41.23\00:06:48.17
with the crayon he
wrote the following,

"To follow you I am not content,
00:06:51.78\00:06:55.79
until I know
just where you went."

And so, you may think
that's a little humorous.

But think about it.

A lot of people really do
not know what happens at death
00:07:07.97\00:07:13.13
and don't know
where they are going.
00:07:13.16\00:07:15.74
And this young man was smart
enough to say where you're--
00:07:15.77\00:07:19.93
or to follow you I'm not content
00:07:19.96\00:07:21.70
until I know
just where you went.
00:07:21.73\00:07:26.41
The question is
where do people go
00:07:26.44\00:07:28.73
and what happens to
people when they die.
00:07:28.76\00:07:32.40
What is death?
This subject is some--
00:07:32.43\00:07:35.47
A subject that
has concerned many.
00:07:35.50\00:07:39.63
But whatever death is,
00:07:39.66\00:07:42.11
it's important
for us to understand
00:07:42.14\00:07:45.21
that Jesus is the
one that has the keys.
00:07:45.24\00:07:48.95
I want you to notice what
it says in Revelation 1:18.
00:07:48.98\00:07:55.15
Jesus says, "I
am he that liveth,
00:07:55.18\00:07:59.26
and was dead, and, behold,
I am alive for evermore."
00:07:59.29\00:08:06.17
Now another syntax part
of the text and then it says,
00:08:06.20\00:08:10.65
"Amen, and have the
keys of hell and of death."
00:08:10.68\00:08:15.87
So, whatever death may be,
we have not studied it yet,
00:08:15.90\00:08:20.59
but it is wonderful to know
that the one who has the keys
00:08:20.62\00:08:25.19
is the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:08:25.22\00:08:27.87
If anyone then should
know what happens at death,
00:08:27.90\00:08:31.27
it should be Jesus.
00:08:31.30\00:08:32.74
What do you say? Amen.

And so, Jesus the
one who revealed--

By the way, the word revelation
means to unfold or to reveal,

tells us that He is the one

that has the keys
of death and of hell.

Perhaps it's important
for us to consider this.
00:08:50.55\00:08:53.49
The Bible in the
first two chapters
00:08:53.52\00:08:56.01
and the last two
chapters of the Bible,
00:08:56.04\00:08:58.09
Genesis 1 and 2 and
Revelation 21 and 22
00:08:58.12\00:09:02.65
both of those
and last two chapters
00:09:02.68\00:09:06.54
and there is the Genesis 1 and 2
00:09:06.57\00:09:08.53
and Revelation 21 and
22 are almost mirror image.
00:09:08.56\00:09:12.65
In other words,

what was at the beginning
is at the new beginning.

And so, if you were to
look at the entire Bible then,

you will see then
that in the beginning

there was eternal life.
00:09:26.17\00:09:27.22
In other words,

if man had not sinned how
long would they have lived for?

Well, the
obvious answer is forever

because it's the
sin that brings death.

The wages of sin is
death as it says in Romans.

And so if man had
never died, pardon me,

never sinned he
would have lived for ever
00:09:45.64\00:09:47.55
and never would have to die.

In the new beginning
in Revelation 21 and 22

we find again is
life restored to man.

Man living forever with God
00:09:57.60\00:09:59.90
as he was in
the first beginning.

And so, what is the Bible?

The Bible is simply a
book to help us to understand

how to get from our first
beginning to our new beginning.

What do you say?

And so, no wonder
some people have said

that the Bible represents
B-Basic, I-Instructions,

B-Before, L-Leaving
and of course E-Earth.

So Basic Instruction
Before Leaving the Earth.

God then has revealed to us

how to get from
the first beginning

to the new beginning.

And I'm sure all of you
want to know how to do that.

So, God then has the plan
of restoration, man lost life.

Through Christ man will
gain life again, eternal life.

Another question I
should ask is this.

How long would man lived for
00:10:51.59\00:10:53.97
if he had not
sinned and in what form?

Now we say, well,
he would live forever.

And then in what
form? In spirit or in flesh?

Well, we've to conclude
that he'd live forever in flesh

because you're
alive descent from Adam.
00:11:06.08\00:11:08.51
And since we've
descent from Adam,

we are flesh and bones.
00:11:10.97\00:11:13.86
So, God intended that mankind.

Who? Mankind live forever.

But it's sin that has brought
an end to what God had planned,

but praise God that
the Lord Jesus Christ came

so that through Him you and I

could be restored
again to have life.

So we seen then the
beginning, eternal life.

We see that in the
beginning man had a face to face

communion with God.

It was a perfect world.
Animal kingdom at peace.

There was a perfect home,

and harmonious
human relationship,

and man could live forever.
00:11:54.75\00:11:56.76
In the New Beginning, of course,

man again has the privilege
of being face to face with God.

There will be a perfect world.

The animal
kingdom will be at peace.
00:12:05.51\00:12:07.15
There will be a perfect home.
00:12:07.18\00:12:08.43
There will be
harmonious human relationships

and once again eternal life.

So you can see then that from
cupboard to the other cupboard,

God has purpose that
you and I live forever.

If that's the case
then, then where are we?

And why is it that we experience
00:12:28.52\00:12:30.34
this thing called death?

And what is death then?

In order to understand death,
00:12:34.52\00:12:36.39
perhaps we
should go to something
00:12:36.42\00:12:37.55
that we do know
and that's called life.
00:12:37.58\00:12:39.70
And so, let's look
at life for example.

In Genesis 2:7 the Bible says,
00:12:42.87\00:12:46.45
"That the Lord
took dust and formed it,
00:12:46.48\00:12:51.29
made the body and then
that after He made the body,
00:12:51.32\00:12:55.07
He breath into the
nostrils the breath of life,
00:12:55.10\00:12:57.46
and man became a living soul."
00:12:57.49\00:12:59.87
Well, another word
for that is living being.
00:12:59.90\00:13:03.26
So, let's look at that then.

God took and made a
body then to the body
00:13:05.47\00:13:09.76
He added breath
and then to the breath
00:13:09.79\00:13:13.29
when they were combined,
the breath and the body
00:13:13.32\00:13:15.57
finally we have what is called
a living soul or living being.

Now that's a simple illustration

and God has
written in such a way
00:13:23.20\00:13:25.17
that even
children could understand.

Aren't you glad that
God makes it that simple?

And so, you can see
then, body plus breath equals

a living being or a living soul.

I suppose one way to
illustrate that is this.

If we were to take a flashlight
and we were to light it,

there would be
light but the light
00:13:46.42\00:13:49.11
is really just a
combination of the light bulb

as connected to the batteries.

If you turned the
switch on the off position,

then the light goes out.

Now if we were to turn
the switch on this auditorium

and the lights would go out.

I would have to
ask you the question.

Where does the light go?

I've had some people say it

goes back to the
electric company.

Well, that's not really correct.

The light just ceases to exist

because the light really is the
combination of the electricity
00:14:20.48\00:14:23.72
plus the light bulb and
when they're put together
00:14:23.75\00:14:26.70
the light heats up
and there is light.

When the
electricity is connected

then the light
just ceases to be.

And so, God then
tells us that the body

which could be representing
the particular flashlight,

God then connects
electricity to that body
00:14:44.33\00:14:47.16
and that's just illustration
and the body comes to life.

And so, that is what
the breath of life is.

God is the one
that's the life giver.

So, we then see what life
is. Now the question is this.

Death then must be or
is it the opposite of life?

And the answer of course is yes.

Death is lifelessness.

When a person
dies then he doesn't,

no longer has life.

Now if you
consider that let's look at

what the scripture
actually says concerning

the individual and
what happens to him.

Looking at Genesis 2:17
when there was that debate,

a dialog that
Satan had with Eve.
00:15:37.21\00:15:40.84
Satan simply said to Eve
00:15:40.87\00:15:44.22
that if she ate of
it, she would not die.
00:15:44.25\00:15:48.09
Eve had already understood
00:15:48.12\00:15:50.32
and Eve responded to
the serpent and said,
00:15:50.35\00:15:54.34
"That God is thou
shalt not eat of it:
00:15:54.37\00:15:56.44
for in the day that thou eat
of it thou shalt surely die."
00:15:56.47\00:15:59.80
So, Eve said, that God said
00:15:59.83\00:16:02.85
that if she
sinned she would die.
00:16:02.88\00:16:05.05
Satan said if you
sin you won't die.
00:16:05.08\00:16:07.92
The question is
this, who was right?

Well, the answer is
obvious, God was right.

The devil said you
would not surely die,

God said, you will surely die.

And unfortunately Eve
experienced what God had said.

Sad to say many
of us or all of us

sooner or later
unless the Lord returns

will have to
experience the same thing.

The question is this then.

When a person dies
then what does God say

happens to the person?

I want you to
notice in the same chapter,

chapter 3 in verse 19,

how does the Lord
says the following.

"In the sweat of thy
face shalt thou eat bread,
00:16:46.26\00:16:49.45
till thou return
unto the ground."
00:16:49.48\00:16:52.48
Till thou what?
00:16:52.51\00:16:53.54
"Return to the ground for
out of it wast thou taken:
00:16:53.57\00:16:59.28
for dust thou art, and
unto dust shalt thou return."
00:16:59.31\00:17:03.69
Genesis 3:19. So
notice this then.

The Lord is the Creator,
Jesus Christ being the Creator

according to the
scriptures forms man,

gives him the breath of
life and tells him not to sin.

Man sins and then the
Lord Himself tells Adam,

you were taken out of the dust

and unto the dust
shalt thou return.

Now let me ask a
question here tonight.

How many of you have
ever been to a funeral?

Any of you?

Obviously many of you
have been to funerals.

Here's the question then.

At a funeral how many of you

have ever heard
the minister say,

"Poor soul, he's gone to hell."
00:17:39.26\00:17:42.87
Any of you?

Well, every time
I ask the question,

I have never
heard of minister saying
00:17:47.78\00:17:50.73
poor soul, he is in hell.

Most of the time what I hear is

he is in heaven or
I hear for example,

like Billy Graham one
time when the twin towers
00:17:57.57\00:18:00.51
was attacked and
the sermon he had,
00:18:00.54\00:18:03.73
I remember his remarks were,
00:18:03.76\00:18:05.80
we do not have to
worry about them now,
00:18:05.83\00:18:07.77
they're in heaven.
00:18:07.80\00:18:09.45
We just have to
worry about the living.

Well, think of it
then. Think of that.

The scripture says
that when people die

they go to the ground.

And in no
funeral I've ever heard

people say they are in hell.

In fact, here's
what I've found out

since I like to
walk through cemeteries.

I've been to
Romania, to Hungary,

to Germany, to
Austria, to Switzerland.

And what's interesting is
that all the tombstones say

rest in peace or in glory land.
00:18:40.67\00:18:45.30
Rest in peace or
they're in heaven.
00:18:45.33\00:18:49.68
Why am I saying that?

Well, I am saying
that because of this.

According to the
scriptures God says

that a person dies
and returns to the dust.

That's what Jesus said

and He's the one
speaking to Adam and Eve.

Now here's the question then.

And what the Bible
underscores is the following.

If it's true then
that man goes to the dust,

does the Bible have
a sufficient support

to underscore
what I've just said.

Notice what it says
in the Book of Job 34:15,
00:19:21.17\00:19:26.88
"All return to the dust!"
00:19:26.91\00:19:29.44
Notice Job 34:15
it says, "All flesh."
00:19:29.47\00:19:32.82
How many?
00:19:32.85\00:19:34.30
"All flesh perish together,
00:19:34.33\00:19:36.93
and man shall
turn again unto dust."
00:19:36.96\00:19:42.24
Man shall turn again unto dust.
00:19:42.27\00:19:46.44
There are some
interesting things
00:19:46.47\00:19:47.50
that I've read
recently concerning this.
00:19:47.53\00:19:49.86
In England for example,
00:19:49.89\00:19:51.93
we are running out
of space to bury people
00:19:51.96\00:19:55.96
and so one of the
things that they had to do
00:19:55.99\00:19:58.61
was that they would have to,
00:19:58.64\00:20:01.43
actually they built
what is called a bone house
00:20:01.46\00:20:03.64
and when they needed a
casket or a place to bury people
00:20:03.67\00:20:08.01
and this place was
already filled with bones,
00:20:08.04\00:20:10.72
they would exhume the bones,
00:20:10.75\00:20:11.90
take out the bones and
put them in the bones house.
00:20:11.93\00:20:13.95
And then they
would put a new casket
00:20:13.98\00:20:15.83
in the same place where
they had taken the bones from.
00:20:15.86\00:20:20.40
However, it's
interesting that they discovered
00:20:20.43\00:20:22.66
that one out of every 25 caskets
00:20:22.69\00:20:28.54
they found scratch marks inside
00:20:28.57\00:20:31.71
and discovered that they were
actually burying people alive.

The reason for that is in
those days a lead had been--
00:20:36.48\00:20:39.53
they were making lead cups
and people who drink alcohol
00:20:39.56\00:20:42.78
would put
alcohol in the lead cups
00:20:42.81\00:20:44.72
and sometimes those
people would go into comatose
00:20:44.75\00:20:49.10
and in those days
they didn't understand that
00:20:49.13\00:20:51.13
and so they would then
think this fellow was dead,

they would bury him and
unfortunately they discovered

too late that the person
actually was buried alive.

So you probably have
heard things like this

saved by the bell, you
know where that comes from,

they comes from the realty

that when they
discovered what was happening,

they actually then,
when they buried somebody

they would put a string
around the person's wrists.

And then they would tie
that string up to the ground,

they would tie it to a bell.

And so then somebody
have to stay in the grave

in the cemetery
through the night

to listen to that bell ring.

And so, if the
person was still alive

he will of course
begin to move his arms,

the rope then
would sound up the bell

and they would take him out.

However, if that did not happen

then they'd say
he was dead ringer

and that's what that
term comes from dead ringer.

If he happened to be
alive then and he rung the bell,

that Jesus really had no power,

Well, the disciple said,

Notice, in other words
when a person is really sick

because they're terribly sick.

so the disciple said,

to sleep as the normal sleep.
