Welcome back to Bible prophecy seminar 00:01:00.35\00:01:03.98 digging up the future, Bible prophecy expose. 00:01:04.01\00:01:06.18 We are glad that Tony Moore has been with us. 00:01:06.21\00:01:08.05 Has it been a blessing to you listening to Tony? 00:01:08.08\00:01:10.57 It's been great. 00:01:10.60\00:01:11.93 And, you know, tonight's lecture is one of my favorite 00:01:11.96\00:01:17.32 and it's gonna be looking at Christ, 00:01:17.35\00:01:19.55 looking at the footsteps of Christ, 00:01:19.58\00:01:21.53 and we've looked at the Nile, we've been to Egypt with Tony, 00:01:21.56\00:01:24.85 we've been many different places. 00:01:24.88\00:01:26.60 Tomorrow night we are going to be our seminar, 00:01:26.63\00:01:28.70 we're going to be in Iraq or Iraq 00:01:28.73\00:01:30.36 I guess it's the way to say that. 00:01:30.39\00:01:31.99 And we are gonna be looking at when Iraq ruled the world. 00:01:32.02\00:01:35.71 That's gonna be fascinating and I hope that you can bring 00:01:35.74\00:01:37.74 your friends back tomorrow evening, 00:01:37.77\00:01:39.18 but tonight more important than even Iraq 00:01:39.21\00:01:42.13 is looking at where Christ walked. 00:01:42.16\00:01:44.27 Would you agree with that? 00:01:44.30\00:01:45.79 So let's just ask the Lord's presence 00:01:45.82\00:01:48.03 as we consider this important 00:01:48.06\00:01:50.28 and heartwarming topic this evening. 00:01:50.31\00:01:53.06 Let's bow our heads together. 00:01:53.09\00:01:54.28 Father in heaven, today we are indeed grateful 00:01:54.31\00:01:57.16 that we can be digging up 00:01:57.19\00:01:59.48 as it were the past, but also the future. 00:01:59.51\00:02:02.77 We can be looking at the past 00:02:02.80\00:02:04.11 where our Lord walked this evening, 00:02:04.14\00:02:06.67 it can guide us in the presence 00:02:06.70\00:02:08.08 and present and hopefully also for the future. 00:02:08.11\00:02:10.86 We ask that Your presence would be with here, 00:02:10.89\00:02:12.83 be with Tony Moore as he speaks with us this evening, 00:02:12.86\00:02:17.19 give him Your words and Your wisdom 00:02:17.22\00:02:20.09 and we thank You 00:02:20.12\00:02:21.45 and we come in Your all powerful name, amen. 00:02:21.48\00:02:26.41 We have been blessed the last few evenings 00:02:26.44\00:02:28.38 with Rafael Scarfullery. 00:02:28.41\00:02:30.68 Some of you asked about his music, 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.85 we are gonna be making some of that available to you, 00:02:32.88\00:02:34.77 but this evening let's listen as he plays that wonderful hymn 00:02:34.80\00:02:39.30 that reminds us of our Lord "Nearer Still Nearer." 00:02:39.33\00:02:43.67 Again I want to say thanks 00:05:44.42\00:05:45.46 for that wonderful music, Rafeal. 00:05:45.49\00:05:47.11 I have totally enjoyed that. What a beautiful number. 00:05:47.14\00:05:50.90 We praise God for your talents 00:05:50.93\00:05:52.53 and your gifts that He has given to you. 00:05:52.56\00:05:54.88 Well, tonight we want to take a journey 00:05:54.91\00:05:56.99 in the footsteps of Jesus. 00:05:57.02\00:05:58.32 I'm gonna ask this question. 00:05:58.35\00:05:59.86 How many have you been to the Galilee? 00:05:59.89\00:06:03.25 Okay. Wow. 00:06:03.28\00:06:04.33 More to Galilee than to Egypt? That's great. 00:06:04.36\00:06:06.70 Well, tonight we are going to be traveling 00:06:06.73\00:06:08.00 throughout the land that Jesus traveled in. 00:06:08.03\00:06:09.99 And I hope it brings back memories for you. 00:06:10.02\00:06:13.25 Positive memories of when you were there. 00:06:13.28\00:06:15.19 And if you hadn't been there, 00:06:15.22\00:06:16.31 I want you to be all just to imagine the places 00:06:16.34\00:06:18.75 where Jesus walked and taught 00:06:18.78\00:06:20.92 of all the presentations that I'll be giving here. 00:06:20.95\00:06:23.72 This is my favorite 00:06:23.75\00:06:24.99 because I get to talk about Jesus 00:06:25.02\00:06:26.91 and the most wonderful stories ever told. 00:06:26.94\00:06:29.69 I have to compact a lot of material. 00:06:29.72\00:06:33.96 I'm actually writing a series right now 00:06:33.99\00:06:36.32 on the 20 presentations, just on the life of Jesus. 00:06:36.35\00:06:40.25 So we are gonna try not give you all 20 tonight. 00:06:40.28\00:06:42.97 But we are going to give you a little tour 00:06:43.00\00:06:44.70 and I hope that will forever live in your mind. 00:06:44.73\00:06:47.97 Tonight, I want to take you in a fascinating journey 00:06:48.00\00:06:50.52 to the near east in the footsteps of Jesus. 00:06:50.55\00:06:52.24 We want to visit the land where He was born, 00:06:52.27\00:06:54.47 where He's been His childhood, 00:06:54.50\00:06:55.75 where He gave us wonderful teachings. 00:06:55.78\00:06:57.66 It's been known for centuries as the Land of Palestine. 00:06:57.69\00:07:01.31 Now why is it called the Land of Palestine? 00:07:01.34\00:07:04.28 Because the philistines lived there. 00:07:04.31\00:07:05.45 Exactly. 00:07:05.48\00:07:06.51 It was also known as the Land of Canaan. 00:07:06.54\00:07:08.52 Any idea why it was called the Land of Canaan? 00:07:08.55\00:07:11.68 'Cause Canaanites live there, of course. 00:07:11.71\00:07:14.94 Well, actually Canaan means red purple 00:07:14.97\00:07:17.17 and they would dye for the Murex Shell 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.01 off the coast in the Mediterranean Sea 00:07:19.04\00:07:21.10 and they would take the gland out of Murex Shell 00:07:21.13\00:07:22.82 and they would snatch it 00:07:22.85\00:07:23.88 and that's how they made purple dye. 00:07:23.91\00:07:25.41 It was so expensive, only royalty could afford it. 00:07:25.44\00:07:28.32 And so it was known as the land of red purple 00:07:28.35\00:07:30.38 or the Land of Canaan. 00:07:30.41\00:07:31.98 Now this land is a small land 00:07:32.01\00:07:33.69 and that's from the first scene that stands out. 00:07:33.72\00:07:35.40 From Old Testament Times, 00:07:35.43\00:07:36.88 it was known form the headwaters of the Jordan River at Dan 00:07:36.91\00:07:40.33 down to the south in a place called Beersheba. 00:07:40.36\00:07:43.65 A distance of about 140 miles. 00:07:43.68\00:07:45.94 That means this land is slightly larger 00:07:45.97\00:07:48.68 than the American State of Vermont. 00:07:48.71\00:07:51.69 Yet this small region contains snowy mountain peeks 00:07:51.72\00:07:56.41 and the lowest bottom earth the Dead Sea. 00:07:56.44\00:07:58.83 It has lush coastal plains 00:07:58.86\00:08:00.45 which reach out in almost touch barren deserts. 00:08:00.48\00:08:04.08 It's a void of natural resources, 00:08:04.11\00:08:06.43 it'sValgarde by inhospitable climate, 00:08:06.46\00:08:09.01 it possessive some of earth's most forbidding landscapes 00:08:09.04\00:08:12.36 and yet it is known as the land 00:08:12.39\00:08:14.47 that God promised to Abraham. 00:08:14.50\00:08:18.46 What it lacks in natural resources 00:08:18.49\00:08:21.02 was made up in a strategic location? 00:08:21.05\00:08:24.19 You see, it's the only intercontinental land bridge 00:08:24.22\00:08:27.04 between the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa. 00:08:27.07\00:08:30.67 It connected the Indian Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean 00:08:30.70\00:08:34.28 via the Red Mediterranean Sea. 00:08:34.31\00:08:36.93 And so it was very, very strategic. 00:08:36.96\00:08:38.98 As a matter of fact, the great empires of the past. 00:08:39.01\00:08:41.66 We have talked about Egypt. 00:08:41.69\00:08:42.96 In our next presentation, 00:08:42.99\00:08:44.02 we will talk about ancient Mesopotamia or Iraq. 00:08:44.05\00:08:46.77 These were the great powers of the past 00:08:46.80\00:08:49.10 and to go between Egypt and Mesopotamia 00:08:49.13\00:08:51.46 or Iraq or Babylon, 00:08:51.49\00:08:53.02 you had to travel right through this little strip of land 00:08:53.05\00:08:55.93 just a 140 miles long and about 50 miles wide. 00:08:55.96\00:08:59.83 Now the first thing that happens 00:08:59.86\00:09:01.11 when most people go to this land is 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.05 that they are kind of surprised, not because so small, 00:09:03.08\00:09:06.93 but they are kind of shocked by what they see. 00:09:06.96\00:09:09.52 My wife was so shocked 00:09:09.55\00:09:11.16 because she was expecting to find a land 00:09:11.19\00:09:14.97 flowing with milk and honey 00:09:15.00\00:09:17.24 and what she saw was a bunch of rocks. 00:09:17.27\00:09:19.94 She said, "Oh, they doesn't flow in milk and honey. 00:09:19.97\00:09:22.28 It's terrible looking." 00:09:22.31\00:09:23.34 It happens to almost everybody who goes there. 00:09:23.37\00:09:25.77 And so of course, people say 00:09:25.80\00:09:27.00 "Well, of course the land has changed through the years." 00:09:27.03\00:09:29.63 Well, actually there is no evidence 00:09:29.66\00:09:33.07 that the rain fall amounts have changed 00:09:33.10\00:09:35.19 that much through the years. 00:09:35.22\00:09:37.39 The archeological evidence does not say 00:09:37.42\00:09:39.27 there has been significant change, 00:09:39.30\00:09:41.65 so what do we mean 00:09:41.68\00:09:43.03 a land flowing with milk and honey. 00:09:43.06\00:09:44.79 Well, where do we get milk? Cows. 00:09:44.82\00:09:48.12 Where do they get milk? Goats, okay. 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.70 Where do you get honey? Bees. 00:09:51.73\00:09:54.29 Where do they get honey? 00:09:54.32\00:09:55.67 They didn't keep bees back in Bible times. 00:09:55.70\00:09:57.65 Once in a while someone like Samson 00:09:57.68\00:09:59.18 might find some in the carcass, 00:09:59.21\00:10:01.26 but they didn't really cultivate these, 00:10:01.29\00:10:03.37 but what they did do they raised, they grew grapes. 00:10:03.40\00:10:07.59 And they would boil the grapes down to a thick paste 00:10:07.62\00:10:10.43 that's called dope and or honey, okay? 00:10:10.46\00:10:15.23 And so then they could reconstitute the paste 00:10:15.26\00:10:17.16 and they make grape to you, 00:10:17.19\00:10:18.22 so the land for growing grapes and raising goats. 00:10:18.25\00:10:20.87 Much like Southern California where I live, 00:10:20.90\00:10:23.34 not like North Carolina where I grew up, all right? 00:10:23.37\00:10:26.30 And perhaps that's the problem. 00:10:26.33\00:10:27.77 We compare this land with our land, 00:10:27.80\00:10:30.54 with Canaan in the summer is all green 00:10:30.57\00:10:32.64 instead of with Southern California 00:10:32.67\00:10:34.81 or New Mexico or Texas 00:10:34.84\00:10:36.95 and so there are some lush plains, 00:10:36.98\00:10:39.91 but they are very, very few and far 00:10:39.94\00:10:41.31 between especially by US standards 00:10:41.34\00:10:43.93 or at least, eastern standards of the United States. 00:10:43.96\00:10:46.46 And perhaps that's the problem. 00:10:46.49\00:10:47.92 We should be really comparing it 00:10:47.95\00:10:49.53 with other areas, Texas, New Mexico, California. 00:10:49.56\00:10:52.95 Well, that's geographical background. 00:10:52.98\00:10:54.52 I want to take you to the land in the footsteps of Jesus. 00:10:54.55\00:10:56.93 We want to begin tonight in Bethlehem. 00:10:56.96\00:10:59.09 Now Bethlehem is interesting 00:10:59.12\00:11:00.35 because Bethlehem means house of bread 00:11:00.38\00:11:04.95 or house of the baker. 00:11:04.98\00:11:06.28 So significant that Jesus the bread of life 00:11:06.31\00:11:10.42 will be born in the house of bread 00:11:10.45\00:11:12.10 or house of the baker, isn't it? 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.99 And so this was a land of David, 00:11:14.02\00:11:16.52 it was a home of Boaz and Ruth and David. 00:11:16.55\00:11:19.31 Gospel of Luke says that Joseph and Mary came to Bethlehem 00:11:19.34\00:11:23.30 before she gave birth to Jesus. 00:11:23.33\00:11:25.85 And we have a quote here on the screen from Luke, 00:11:25.88\00:11:30.77 "In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree 00:11:30.80\00:11:33.67 that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world, 00:11:33.70\00:11:36.74 and everyone went to his own town to register. 00:11:36.77\00:11:39.77 So Joseph and Mary went down to a town in Nazareth." 00:11:39.80\00:11:44.38 I'm sorry. 00:11:44.41\00:11:45.44 "So Joseph also went up 00:11:45.47\00:11:46.58 from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, 00:11:46.61\00:11:49.57 to Bethlehem the town of David, 00:11:49.60\00:11:51.80 He went there to register with Mary." 00:11:51.83\00:11:54.29 Well, this city was a small town and then-- 00:11:54.32\00:11:57.77 This town was a small town 00:11:57.80\00:11:58.85 in antiquity was built on a ridge of granite 00:11:58.88\00:12:01.96 and today it's also a small town about five miles from Jerusalem. 00:12:01.99\00:12:06.73 Animals were actually kept in caves. 00:12:06.76\00:12:09.71 Most people started living in caves. 00:12:09.74\00:12:11.94 And if you got a real more wealthy, 00:12:11.97\00:12:13.31 you build your house on top of the cave, 00:12:13.34\00:12:15.22 but you still bring your animals inside of your house at night. 00:12:15.25\00:12:18.43 You bring them in for protection, 00:12:18.46\00:12:20.29 you wouldn't once want you to steal them, 00:12:20.32\00:12:21.90 also in the winter time for warmth. 00:12:21.93\00:12:23.82 And so we still see that people live this way today, 00:12:23.85\00:12:26.89 they still bring their animals in. 00:12:26.92\00:12:28.69 Now we think about Jesus and being born in a barn. 00:12:28.72\00:12:32.95 And we like to think about Christmas cards 00:12:32.98\00:12:35.88 out of all these nice wooden mangers. 00:12:35.91\00:12:38.43 And European artists were very used 00:12:38.46\00:12:40.58 to all this wood and so built it, 00:12:40.61\00:12:42.45 but in that part of the world there is not many trees. 00:12:42.48\00:12:45.01 So mangers were actually carved out of stone. 00:12:45.04\00:12:48.87 And so in every home would it basically down the basement, 00:12:48.90\00:12:51.88 they will have a stone manger, 00:12:51.91\00:12:54.23 a feeding trough or a watering trough. 00:12:54.26\00:12:56.63 And the Bible tells us 00:12:56.66\00:12:57.69 that Jesus was born and placed into a manger. 00:12:57.72\00:13:01.01 It would have been more of a manger like this. 00:13:01.04\00:13:03.84 And so Jesus was most likely more and there in the cave. 00:13:03.87\00:13:07.22 As we go to Bethlehem, we want to go to manger square. 00:13:07.25\00:13:10.15 This is the centre of the town for the modern tourist. 00:13:10.18\00:13:12.80 This is the church of the nativity. 00:13:12.83\00:13:14.84 It was originally built by Constantine's mother Helena 00:13:14.87\00:13:17.43 who also built the church of the Holy Sepulcher. 00:13:17.46\00:13:19.89 We talked about in the previous episode on Jerusalem. 00:13:19.92\00:13:22.60 As she just came, she searched out the area. 00:13:22.63\00:13:25.27 This is where they said Jesus was born. 00:13:25.30\00:13:27.18 Was it the place? I don't know. 00:13:27.21\00:13:28.82 But it's certainly is beautiful that she has built that. 00:13:28.85\00:13:32.38 And this is the oldest church in the Bible lands. 00:13:32.41\00:13:36.15 Now pay attention to this, it's kind of interesting. 00:13:36.18\00:13:38.54 You see, oldest church in the bible 00:13:38.57\00:13:39.73 and you see the Persians came through the seventh century 00:13:39.76\00:13:41.76 and they destroyed all of the churches 00:13:41.79\00:13:44.12 that had been built in the Babylon 00:13:44.15\00:13:46.23 except the church of the nativity. 00:13:46.26\00:13:48.45 Now why would Persians not destroyed 00:13:48.48\00:13:50.18 the church of the nativity? 00:13:50.21\00:13:53.31 Let me say it again. 00:13:53.34\00:13:54.37 Why would Persians not destroy the church of nativity? 00:13:54.40\00:14:00.31 Well, they went in and they were Persians 00:14:00.34\00:14:02.75 and they came in and they saw mosaics of the Wise Men 00:14:02.78\00:14:07.01 who were from the region of Persia. 00:14:07.04\00:14:08.74 And they said, "Our guys have already been here. 00:14:08.77\00:14:10.47 We can't destroy this place." And they preserved it. 00:14:10.50\00:14:13.03 So this is the oldest church in the Bible lands 00:14:13.06\00:14:15.34 has these fabulous columns of marble 00:14:15.37\00:14:18.20 just a wonderful area to go and visit. 00:14:18.23\00:14:21.20 And as you go into the church, 00:14:21.23\00:14:22.40 you go down underneath 00:14:22.43\00:14:24.91 the Rostam Area there underneath the stage 00:14:24.94\00:14:27.67 and you go down to where there is a cave 00:14:27.70\00:14:29.76 and a crypt and they covered all the way 00:14:29.79\00:14:32.57 and here there is a silver star and hasn't latent here 00:14:32.60\00:14:36.96 Jesus Christ was born of the virgin Mary. 00:14:36.99\00:14:39.46 Was it the place? I don't know. 00:14:39.49\00:14:41.27 I know that I have personally full back the tapestries 00:14:41.30\00:14:44.23 and you can see that it was a cave 00:14:44.26\00:14:45.82 and certainly was a cave in antiquity. 00:14:45.85\00:14:47.95 The important thing to me as it preserves the memory 00:14:47.98\00:14:50.75 that Jesus was born in this part of the world. 00:14:50.78\00:14:53.49 And that's important. 00:14:53.52\00:14:54.98 Now a lot of people who go to the Bible lands 00:14:55.01\00:14:57.12 they get disappointed 00:14:57.15\00:14:58.18 because every where you go there is a church. 00:14:58.21\00:15:00.67 And they say, "Ha, like Galilee 00:15:00.70\00:15:02.47 because I get up to Galilee and there is no churches." 00:15:02.50\00:15:04.64 And you know what I tell people? 00:15:04.67\00:15:06.05 I thank the Lord 00:15:06.08\00:15:07.26 that there are churches built on these sights 00:15:07.29\00:15:09.13 because if there wasn't a church 00:15:09.16\00:15:10.19 in apartment building or shopping mall, 00:15:10.22\00:15:12.24 it leaves the church preserves the memory 00:15:12.27\00:15:14.57 of where these stories took place 00:15:14.60\00:15:16.02 or the vicinity of the stories. 00:15:16.05\00:15:17.96 And so, it's a very special place to go. 00:15:17.99\00:15:20.35 I really enjoy going there so much. 00:15:20.38\00:15:22.74 Well, the Wise Men followed the start at Jerusalem 00:15:22.77\00:15:26.19 where they met King Herod. 00:15:26.22\00:15:27.88 After they left, the sages of Jerusalem 00:15:27.91\00:15:31.25 were called in by King Herod 00:15:31.28\00:15:32.49 and he said, "Tell me what's going on." 00:15:32.52\00:15:34.08 And they quoted a prophecy. 00:15:34.11\00:15:35.81 They quote in Micah 5:2. 00:15:35.84\00:15:38.67 "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, 00:15:38.70\00:15:40.47 though you are small among the clans of Judah, 00:15:40.50\00:15:43.22 Out of you will come for me 00:15:43.25\00:15:44.98 one who will be ruler over Israel, 00:15:45.01\00:15:47.41 whose origins are from of old, from ancient times?" 00:15:47.44\00:15:51.65 So when the sages were put under the test, 00:15:51.68\00:15:54.22 they knew exactly where Messiah will be born in Bethlehem. 00:15:54.25\00:15:58.36 Well, the Wise Men went and they visited Jesus, 00:15:58.39\00:16:02.48 it's at least six weeks have passed 00:16:02.51\00:16:04.29 because he's already went to the temple, 00:16:04.32\00:16:06.19 he's already went to the temple 00:16:06.22\00:16:07.79 then registered after the 40 day period there 00:16:07.82\00:16:10.86 and so several weeks have passed and they bring their gifts-- 00:16:10.89\00:16:15.34 What was it? 00:16:15.37\00:16:16.40 Gold and frankincense and myrrh and these tremendous commodities 00:16:16.43\00:16:21.79 paid the expenses of the Holy family 00:16:21.82\00:16:24.46 as they went down into Egypt 00:16:24.49\00:16:26.62 and they took care of the expenses 00:16:26.65\00:16:28.29 until after the death of King Herod. 00:16:28.32\00:16:30.51 Now Herod was so incensed over the fall of a rival king 00:16:30.54\00:16:34.06 that he ordered the massacre of all male children 00:16:34.09\00:16:36.39 living there in Bethlehem two years and under. 00:16:36.42\00:16:38.83 This marked his character well. 00:16:38.86\00:16:41.20 You see, Herod in the feel of Jealousy 00:16:41.23\00:16:44.03 ordered his beautiful executed. 00:16:44.06\00:16:47.25 He had her mother and her brother-- 00:16:47.28\00:16:49.09 I'm sorry. The high priest drowned. 00:16:49.12\00:16:52.36 He had three of his sons killed, two by strangulations. 00:16:52.39\00:16:57.15 Since he wouldn't eat pork, 00:16:57.18\00:16:58.42 his good friend Caesar Augustus said, 00:16:58.45\00:17:00.46 "I would rather be Herod's pig than his son." 00:17:00.49\00:17:03.34 Well, all in the distance we can see the Herodion, 00:17:07.95\00:17:10.57 this was built by King Herod and it's a fabulous building. 00:17:10.60\00:17:13.85 I want to just tell you a quick little story, 00:17:13.88\00:17:15.39 don't have much time. 00:17:15.42\00:17:16.45 We've talked about potshots. 00:17:16.48\00:17:17.52 A number of years ago there were some tourists there 00:17:17.55\00:17:19.62 and near the old pot tops on cans in the old days, 00:17:19.65\00:17:22.77 you know, and people you wouldn't do this, 00:17:22.80\00:17:24.71 but some of the people would just throw them on the ground, 00:17:24.74\00:17:26.53 and this tourist is walking along 00:17:26.56\00:17:28.11 finds a pot top there on the ground 00:17:28.14\00:17:29.85 and she kicked it with her foot 00:17:29.88\00:17:31.13 and then she bend over and picked it up 00:17:31.16\00:17:33.43 and it wasn't a pot top at all, 00:17:33.46\00:17:35.55 it turned out to be a silver earring 00:17:35.58\00:17:38.02 from one of Herod's wives. 00:17:38.05\00:17:39.80 That was found here in the Herodion. 00:17:39.83\00:17:41.05 He uses as his summer fortress or summer palace. 00:17:41.08\00:17:45.48 He was a greatest builder of antiquity, 00:17:45.51\00:17:47.11 he had a swimming pool down at the bottom, 00:17:47.14\00:17:48.77 he was a fabulous builder, but he built many other places. 00:17:48.80\00:17:51.98 Here we see Masada, he built Machairas, 00:17:52.01\00:17:54.86 he had these fortresses all around in case 00:17:54.89\00:17:57.43 you would try to attack him and kill him 00:17:57.46\00:17:59.53 and so he also built Caesarea, 00:17:59.56\00:18:03.03 he named this greatest port on the east of Mediterranean 00:18:03.06\00:18:05.49 after he has been a factor Caesar. 00:18:05.52\00:18:07.37 And then of course, he expanded the temple 00:18:07.40\00:18:10.04 as we talked about 00:18:10.07\00:18:11.10 in our presentation on Jerusalem. 00:18:11.13\00:18:13.06 He was a part of the biggest builder of all time. 00:18:13.09\00:18:15.97 Well, the family went down to Egypt 00:18:16.00\00:18:17.78 and then when they returned the Lord instructed them 00:18:17.81\00:18:20.04 not to go back to Bethlehem, 00:18:20.07\00:18:22.63 but to return to their home in Nazareth. 00:18:22.66\00:18:24.49 Now Nazareth was not 00:18:24.52\00:18:25.81 one of the favorite places of the rabbis, 00:18:25.84\00:18:28.14 up in the northern part 00:18:28.17\00:18:29.29 they were far away from Jerusalem 00:18:29.32\00:18:30.76 and so they didn't tend to follow the tours. 00:18:30.79\00:18:33.80 As a mater of fact one rabbi cried out, 00:18:33.83\00:18:35.48 "Galilee! Galilee! Though that hate us the Torah." 00:18:35.51\00:18:38.42 And one of the worst villages 00:18:38.45\00:18:40.06 that quoted they didn't love 00:18:40.09\00:18:41.12 the Torah they said was Nazareth. 00:18:41.15\00:18:43.76 And it was to that village that God shows a young woman 00:18:43.79\00:18:46.79 who was to become the mother of Jesus. 00:18:46.82\00:18:49.09 She was engaged to a carpenter. 00:18:49.12\00:18:52.39 This young woman had probably just in her puberty 00:18:52.42\00:18:55.00 if she was typical of the girls of her time, 00:18:55.03\00:18:57.85 probably 13 or 14 years old just entered in her puberty. 00:18:57.88\00:19:01.52 She had a wonderful character and a lovely spirit. 00:19:01.55\00:19:04.24 Now the Church of the Annunciation 00:19:04.27\00:19:05.53 in the Nazareth marks the spot 00:19:05.56\00:19:06.95 where tradition says the ancient Gabriel appear to her 00:19:06.98\00:19:09.92 with her a heavenly message. 00:19:09.95\00:19:11.06 And what the message was? 00:19:11.09\00:19:12.84 Bible says, "The angel said to her, do not be afraid, Mary, 00:19:12.87\00:19:16.19 you have found favor with God. 00:19:16.22\00:19:18.06 You will be with child and give birth to a son, 00:19:18.09\00:19:20.09 and you are to give him the name Jesus." 00:19:20.12\00:19:23.18 Oh, I love the story of Mary. 00:19:23.21\00:19:24.77 Down below the present day church there are caves 00:19:24.80\00:19:27.91 that they believe that Mary's family lived in. 00:19:27.94\00:19:31.03 We don't know if it's true, 00:19:31.06\00:19:32.20 but we do know that this sight here 00:19:32.23\00:19:34.91 that's on the screen is a well of Mary. 00:19:34.94\00:19:37.76 This was the only spring, 00:19:37.79\00:19:39.36 that the only source of water in Mary's day 00:19:39.39\00:19:41.83 so certainly she would have come here 00:19:41.86\00:19:43.87 and she would have come here to draw water 00:19:43.90\00:19:47.37 and so it's very moving to go there. 00:19:47.40\00:19:49.35 Well, as I went through the City of Nazareth, 00:19:49.38\00:19:51.48 I was exploring the city with my camera 00:19:51.51\00:19:53.50 I saw this pregnant lady and immediately I thought 00:19:53.53\00:19:56.32 of scandal living in honors society 00:19:56.35\00:19:59.34 becoming pregnant out of wedlock what do this mean? 00:19:59.37\00:20:02.87 We will monetize a story 00:20:02.90\00:20:04.61 from this side of the 21st century, 00:20:04.64\00:20:07.10 but it would have been terribly difficult 00:20:07.13\00:20:09.13 for her and her family. 00:20:09.16\00:20:11.11 I saw these children all dressed in their uniforms for school 00:20:11.14\00:20:14.12 and I thought about Jesus how He went to the synagogue 00:20:14.15\00:20:17.47 and how He was cursed by the rabbis in Jerusalem, 00:20:17.50\00:20:20.75 and He was only 12 years old 00:20:20.78\00:20:22.11 and how His mother had taught Him the Torah. 00:20:22.14\00:20:24.65 And the Hebrew Scriptures, homes have changes very little 00:20:24.68\00:20:28.47 during the past 2,000 years. 00:20:28.50\00:20:30.92 Jesus probably grew up in a one room, 00:20:30.95\00:20:33.44 mud brick house, ruffed with mud covered red mass. 00:20:33.47\00:20:38.38 They don't even having a sleeping mats 00:20:38.41\00:20:40.06 where they lay out during the night for sleeping, 00:20:40.09\00:20:43.05 very simple house as you can see on the screen 00:20:43.08\00:20:46.90 kind of a courtyard in the middle 00:20:46.93\00:20:48.50 and they lay out their mats 00:20:48.53\00:20:50.22 and they would have their simple utensils 00:20:50.25\00:20:52.95 for eating and cooking 00:20:52.98\00:20:54.47 and then they would move those 00:20:54.50\00:20:55.79 and that's where He would sleep at night. 00:20:55.82\00:20:57.60 Homes have changed very little. 00:20:57.63\00:20:58.98 Each home would have a loom 00:20:59.01\00:21:00.24 where can weave their garments 00:21:00.27\00:21:02.57 that they would wear by day we will keep them warm by night. 00:21:02.60\00:21:05.78 And of course, some infinite soul created this shelf 00:21:05.81\00:21:09.84 where you could actually keep things in your house. 00:21:09.87\00:21:12.99 Each home would probably have a little bronze, mirror 00:21:13.02\00:21:15.24 and some little jars like 00:21:15.27\00:21:16.44 we have shown you here on the table. 00:21:16.47\00:21:17.78 They could keep the oils 00:21:17.81\00:21:18.84 and the precious things that ladies would have. 00:21:18.87\00:21:20.93 And so the basic house really hasn't changed very much 00:21:20.96\00:21:23.45 during the past 2,000 years in the village. 00:21:23.48\00:21:25.90 Well, Jesus when He is about 30 years old, 00:21:25.93\00:21:27.89 He left Nazareth, He left the carpenter shop 00:21:27.92\00:21:30.12 and He began to journey down to the Jordan 00:21:30.15\00:21:32.24 where John the Baptist was teaching 00:21:32.27\00:21:34.15 and preaching and baptizing. 00:21:34.18\00:21:35.95 He walked through the hills on to the Elle of gardens 00:21:35.98\00:21:38.01 to the trio that lead down to Tiberius 00:21:38.04\00:21:40.15 he then scattered around the Sea of Galilee 00:21:40.18\00:21:42.34 as he made us way down 00:21:42.37\00:21:43.81 to the God, to the Jordan valley. 00:21:43.84\00:21:46.11 Today, this is a no man's land. 00:21:46.14\00:21:48.25 It's a carefully patrolled area 00:21:48.28\00:21:49.97 between Jordan and Israeli held West Bank. 00:21:50.00\00:21:53.35 Everyday this road is patrolled looking for footprints 00:21:53.38\00:21:56.22 any evidence of infiltrations, heavily laid with mines, 00:21:56.25\00:22:00.01 but when Jesus walked down there were no mines, 00:22:00.04\00:22:02.11 there were no fences because Rome ruled all. 00:22:02.14\00:22:05.12 Rome ruled all. 00:22:05.15\00:22:07.30 Jesus continued on down to the fricative Jordan 00:22:07.33\00:22:11.07 and to a place near Jericho. 00:22:11.10\00:22:13.75 Now today the lake and river have largely been drained 00:22:13.78\00:22:17.10 due to the intensive agricultural program 00:22:17.13\00:22:20.02 that's carried on by both Jordan and Israel. 00:22:20.05\00:22:23.87 In ancient times, 00:22:23.90\00:22:24.93 however the River Jordan overflowed its banks 00:22:24.96\00:22:26.74 and could be a very, very dangerous place. 00:22:26.77\00:22:28.85 There were wild animals 00:22:28.88\00:22:29.91 that would live there in the Gore 00:22:29.94\00:22:31.49 in the thicket of the Jordan. 00:22:31.52\00:22:33.56 Today it's a wonderful place to go down. 00:22:33.59\00:22:35.92 There is a place near the outlet of the Red Sea 00:22:35.95\00:22:38.30 of the Sea of Galilee where tourist love to come 00:22:38.33\00:22:41.78 and here we have some Greek orthodox pilgrimages 00:22:41.81\00:22:44.73 that have come to make a journey of the life time. 00:22:44.76\00:22:47.10 They are being baptized by immersion 00:22:47.13\00:22:48.99 you can see if your joy that's on their face. 00:22:49.02\00:22:51.64 It's very impressive to go there, 00:22:51.67\00:22:53.40 but personally I prefer this little spot 00:22:53.43\00:22:55.90 that I have found on one of my journeys, 00:22:55.93\00:22:58.83 it's a little quite place south of Buchan 00:22:58.86\00:23:01.59 and I was able to pull over my rental car and went out 00:23:01.62\00:23:04.86 and it's kind of dangerous 00:23:04.89\00:23:05.96 because as I went down to the door 00:23:05.99\00:23:07.76 there were Israeli tanks 00:23:07.79\00:23:08.91 that were covered with camouflage nets 00:23:08.94\00:23:10.86 on the right side and the left side, 00:23:10.89\00:23:12.21 but anyway I got out here 00:23:12.24\00:23:13.91 and I was there by the Jordan I saw that white bird 00:23:13.94\00:23:16.85 and immediately I thought about the dove 00:23:16.88\00:23:20.02 because Jesus was baptized. 00:23:20.05\00:23:21.61 You remember Luke Chapter 3 says, 00:23:21.64\00:23:23.19 "And the Holy Spirit descended on him 00:23:23.22\00:23:24.99 in bodily form like a dove. 00:23:25.02\00:23:26.88 And a voice came from heaven, 00:23:26.91\00:23:28.09 'You are my son, whom I love, with you I am well pleased.'" 00:23:28.12\00:23:32.31 And wow, that was a special moment for me. 00:23:32.34\00:23:34.71 Now that Jordon is not the clearest of rivers 00:23:34.74\00:23:36.98 or the largest of rivers. 00:23:37.01\00:23:38.35 Today it's only a stream, but it was here in this river 00:23:38.38\00:23:40.96 that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. 00:23:40.99\00:23:44.42 And here was the God said, "This is My Son whom I love 00:23:44.45\00:23:51.69 with him I'm well pleased." 00:23:51.72\00:23:54.65 that "Jesus was then lead by the spirit 00:23:55.63\00:23:57.99 into the wilderness." 00:23:58.02\00:23:59.31 Jesus was led up into the wilderness 00:23:59.34\00:24:00.64 to be tempted by the devil. 00:24:00.67\00:24:01.99 Matthew 4:1, immediately he left the serenity 00:24:02.02\00:24:06.00 and the security of John the Baptist in the Jordan. 00:24:06.03\00:24:08.94 He began his steepest sin up into the wilderness 00:24:08.97\00:24:11.59 to the place where he was to be tempted by the devil. 00:24:11.62\00:24:14.12 Now this wilderness I used to read about in the Bible. 00:24:14.15\00:24:16.35 I thought it was like Oregon, all right? 00:24:16.38\00:24:18.56 You know, all those trees, you know, the Paul Bunyan type, 00:24:18.59\00:24:21.32 but it really is better the desert 00:24:21.35\00:24:23.74 because it's a deserted area. 00:24:23.77\00:24:25.61 There aren't any trees. 00:24:25.64\00:24:26.67 This is a terrible wild place for this. 00:24:26.70\00:24:28.88 There is nothing. 00:24:28.91\00:24:30.59 He went up to be tempted by the devil 00:24:30.62\00:24:32.97 where the wilderness of temptation. 00:24:33.00\00:24:34.84 Now here on the screen, 00:24:34.87\00:24:36.68 it's a little difficult to make out, 00:24:36.71\00:24:37.93 but can you see this? 00:24:37.96\00:24:39.21 These orthodox priests have carved out and made this area, 00:24:39.24\00:24:44.19 this monastery where they have lived on precipitous cliff 00:24:44.22\00:24:47.14 of the Jordan River Valley above Jericho. 00:24:47.17\00:24:51.46 And this is to commemorate 00:24:51.49\00:24:53.58 the story of Jews being there for 40 days. 00:24:53.61\00:24:55.98 Now the Jordan River at this location near Jericho 00:24:56.01\00:24:59.55 is a 1,000 feet below sea level. 00:24:59.58\00:25:01.78 This is 3,000 feet above sea level, 00:25:01.81\00:25:03.96 so you scale a cliff 4,000 feet up, okay? 00:25:03.99\00:25:07.75 And these monks have been there 00:25:07.78\00:25:10.57 keeping alive the story of Jesus fasting in the wilderness. 00:25:10.60\00:25:15.95 Well, after he fasted for 40 days 00:25:15.98\00:25:18.91 the Bibles tells us that the devil came to him 00:25:18.94\00:25:21.45 and while he was hungry in an intense seed 00:25:21.48\00:25:24.02 and he tempted him to turn the stones into the bread. 00:25:24.05\00:25:26.72 Now the stones aren't like the stones here in Kansas. 00:25:26.75\00:25:29.07 They're really flat and they're round 00:25:29.10\00:25:30.79 and they look like the little Palestinian loaves. 00:25:30.82\00:25:33.41 And you can imagine if you are in the sun 00:25:33.44\00:25:34.80 and you see that and you are hungry. 00:25:34.83\00:25:36.20 You could think it's like Peter bread and, 00:25:36.23\00:25:39.55 but Jesus met him 00:25:39.58\00:25:40.85 and said, "Man does not live on bread alone, 00:25:40.88\00:25:44.23 but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." 00:25:44.26\00:25:46.66 Mathew 4:4. 00:25:46.69\00:25:48.43 Then the Bible says Jesus was taken 00:25:48.46\00:25:49.88 to the pinnacle the temple 00:25:49.91\00:25:51.31 and he was encouraged to reveal his divine powers 00:25:51.34\00:25:54.18 by throwing himself down, 00:25:54.21\00:25:56.16 but Jesus had chosen to live as a man 00:25:56.19\00:25:59.34 and he would not use his God powers 00:25:59.37\00:26:01.22 for shower your selfish purposes. 00:26:01.25\00:26:04.10 And so he said to the old devil, 00:26:04.13\00:26:06.05 "Do not put the Lord your God to the test." 00:26:06.08\00:26:09.63 Matthew 4:7. 00:26:09.66\00:26:11.71 I have often wondered if the devil took 00:26:11.74\00:26:13.31 Jesus there to the edge of the Jordan River Valley 00:26:13.34\00:26:16.56 and there's just there is nothing growing 00:26:16.59\00:26:18.56 in the wilderness and then you look down 00:26:18.59\00:26:20.49 and you see the Jordan River and it's coming down in it, 00:26:20.52\00:26:23.71 there is a City of Palms called Jericho. 00:26:23.74\00:26:27.17 And there in Jericho, Herod had his winter palace 00:26:27.20\00:26:31.62 and it was in white cleaning marble. 00:26:31.65\00:26:33.18 I wonder if the old devil took him right to the edge 00:26:33.21\00:26:35.42 and pointed down to that green oasis 00:26:35.45\00:26:37.73 with that white marble palace of Herod 00:26:37.76\00:26:41.78 and said, "If you worship me 00:26:41.81\00:26:44.14 I'll give you all the kingdoms of the world." 00:26:44.17\00:26:46.23 But you know what Jesus said? 00:26:46.26\00:26:47.92 Matthew 4:8, "Again, the devil took him 00:26:47.95\00:26:50.20 to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms 00:26:50.23\00:26:52.46 of the world and their splendor. 00:26:52.49\00:26:53.71 All this I will give you, if you bow down and worship me." 00:26:53.74\00:26:57.24 And of course Jesus once again read him the scripture 00:26:57.27\00:27:01.30 and said, "Away from me, Satan! 00:27:01.33\00:27:03.77 For it is written, you shall worship the Lord 00:27:03.80\00:27:06.66 your God, and him only shall you serve." 00:27:06.69\00:27:09.46 Jesus left the desert, He returned to the Jordan River 00:27:09.49\00:27:13.48 where John identified Him as the Lamb of God, 00:27:13.51\00:27:18.07 remember that? John 1:29. 00:27:18.10\00:27:20.74 "The next day John saw Jesus coming towards him 00:27:20.77\00:27:22.84 and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, 00:27:22.87\00:27:24.82 who takes away the sin of the world." 00:27:24.85\00:27:28.15 Some of the disciples overheard that some of John's disciples 00:27:28.18\00:27:31.73 and they began to follow Jesus. 00:27:31.76\00:27:33.77 Oh, John, the disciple John, the young John 00:27:33.80\00:27:39.61 when he is an old man in his 90s, 00:27:39.64\00:27:41.78 he writes a gospel called John 00:27:41.81\00:27:43.62 and he still remembers the day it happened 00:27:43.65\00:27:45.85 and he still remembers the hour says about the ninth hour 00:27:45.88\00:27:48.81 when I first heard that about Jesus. 00:27:48.84\00:27:50.62 Changed his life. Incredible, isn't it? 00:27:50.65\00:27:52.88 He began to follow. 00:27:52.91\00:27:53.94 Well, the Bible says they went up 00:27:53.97\00:27:55.01 to a village up in Galilee in your Nazareth called Cana. 00:27:55.04\00:27:58.19 There was a wedding there 00:27:58.22\00:27:59.25 and there Jesus performed his first miracle 00:27:59.28\00:28:01.61 turning water into sweet wine. 00:28:01.64\00:28:04.40 There is a church that's built there today 00:28:04.43\00:28:06.23 commemorates a stories 00:28:06.26\00:28:07.73 and the church is an Orthodox Church 00:28:07.76\00:28:11.44 and there is also a Roman Catholic Church next to it, 00:28:11.47\00:28:14.23 there's some very large clay pots there that help us 00:28:14.26\00:28:18.88 to envision the size of the pots of the water 00:28:18.91\00:28:22.22 that Jesus changed into wine. 00:28:22.25\00:28:23.71 It's very special to be there. 00:28:23.74\00:28:25.17 On my visits, I met this priest he insisted 00:28:25.20\00:28:27.13 I come into his church and drink from his well 00:28:27.16\00:28:29.18 because it was the only well on those days. 00:28:29.21\00:28:31.34 And so that would've been the water, 00:28:31.37\00:28:33.21 the source of water at least 00:28:33.24\00:28:34.40 that Jesus would've used for that miracle. 00:28:34.43\00:28:36.73 When Jesus returned to his home town, 00:28:36.76\00:28:38.57 Nazareth His fame had preceded him. 00:28:38.60\00:28:40.94 He was invited teaching the synagogue 00:28:40.97\00:28:43.60 on the Sabbath day. 00:28:43.63\00:28:44.66 Now the passage they were reading that day 00:28:44.69\00:28:46.73 was from Isaiah the prophet, 00:28:46.76\00:28:49.96 and Luke records this and it's quoting from Isaiah, 00:28:49.99\00:28:54.69 "The spirit of the Lord is on me, 00:28:54.72\00:28:56.20 because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. 00:28:56.23\00:28:59.71 He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners 00:28:59.74\00:29:02.19 and recovery of sight for the blind, 00:29:02.22\00:29:04.40 to release the oppressed, 00:29:04.43\00:29:05.73 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. 00:29:05.76\00:29:08.88 Then he rolled up the scroll, 00:29:08.91\00:29:10.06 gave it back to the attendant and sat down." 00:29:10.09\00:29:12.03 That's a little different, isn't it? 00:29:12.06\00:29:13.40 Because He was sitting in the seat of Mosses to teach. 00:29:13.43\00:29:15.40 He stood up to read the scripture 00:29:15.43\00:29:16.50 and He sat down to teach. 00:29:16.53\00:29:17.82 The eyes of everyone in the synagogue 00:29:17.85\00:29:19.35 were fastened on him 00:29:19.38\00:29:20.57 and He began by saying to them, 00:29:20.60\00:29:22.42 "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." 00:29:22.45\00:29:25.02 And they said Hallelujah, right? 00:29:25.05\00:29:27.28 The Messiah is here right? 00:29:27.31\00:29:28.71 No. 00:29:28.74\00:29:30.30 Bible says they were curious, 00:29:30.33\00:29:33.15 they grabbed Him and they took Him out of the synagogue 00:29:33.18\00:29:35.64 and they took Him out to the brow of the hill 00:29:35.67\00:29:39.18 to throw Him over and kill Him. 00:29:39.21\00:29:42.14 But his time has not yet come, 00:29:42.17\00:29:43.70 so He slipped through their hands 00:29:43.73\00:29:46.11 and He escaped and he went down to Capernaum 00:29:46.14\00:29:49.78 where He began to teach down by the Sea of Galilee. 00:29:49.81\00:29:54.25 He left Galilee's-- He left-- 00:29:54.28\00:29:56.35 Nazareth saying, "No prophet is accepted 00:29:56.38\00:29:58.73 in his own home town." 00:29:58.76\00:30:00.16 He went out to Capernaum. 00:30:00.19\00:30:01.22 Now Capernaum would become known as his own town. 00:30:01.25\00:30:05.13 This became the place of his residence. 00:30:05.16\00:30:07.87 And Jesus move down there, 00:30:07.90\00:30:09.31 He established His ministry there for the next few years. 00:30:09.34\00:30:11.91 He has one of the most ideal climates in the land, 00:30:11.94\00:30:14.91 but that's not why Jesus went there 00:30:14.94\00:30:16.20 because of the climate, 00:30:16.23\00:30:17.96 He went there because of a strategic importance. 00:30:17.99\00:30:20.14 You see, in those days the Great Trunk Road, 00:30:20.17\00:30:23.51 what is it Interstate 70 00:30:23.54\00:30:24.99 kind of went through their, all right? 00:30:25.02\00:30:26.40 And the Great Trunk Road went there 00:30:26.43\00:30:28.33 and connected Egypt down the south 00:30:28.36\00:30:29.93 with the Damascus in the north 00:30:29.96\00:30:31.24 and it went right through Capernaum. 00:30:31.27\00:30:33.20 And so Jesus wanted to be on the trade rows. 00:30:33.23\00:30:35.36 He wanted people passing in those caravans 00:30:35.39\00:30:37.59 to pick up the stories of what He was doing. 00:30:37.62\00:30:40.12 And so He positioned Himself there. 00:30:40.15\00:30:42.19 You can see the Via Maris, the milestone. 00:30:42.22\00:30:45.06 There is a roman roll the way of the sea. 00:30:45.09\00:30:47.36 And so this is where Jesus went and established His ministry. 00:30:47.39\00:30:51.75 Capernaum was also the home port 00:30:51.78\00:30:53.85 of Andrew and Peter, James and John. 00:30:53.88\00:30:56.17 And one day Jesus came 00:30:56.20\00:30:57.47 by as they were cleaning their nets 00:30:57.50\00:30:59.48 and He said, "Follow me and I'll make you. 00:30:59.51\00:31:03.28 Fishers of men and they left their nets 00:31:03.31\00:31:06.14 and became full time disciples of Jesus." 00:31:06.17\00:31:08.67 The ruins of the synagogue 00:31:08.70\00:31:10.16 here in Capernaum are very interesting. 00:31:10.19\00:31:12.20 The ruins of the white-- 00:31:12.23\00:31:14.11 You can see the white stones here 00:31:14.14\00:31:15.41 that's from the third century, 00:31:15.44\00:31:16.47 but down at the bottom 00:31:16.50\00:31:17.53 you can see the black basalt stones. 00:31:17.56\00:31:19.83 This is the foundation of the first century synagogue 00:31:19.86\00:31:23.35 that was built by a Roman Centurion 00:31:23.38\00:31:28.20 who's servant Jesus healed by speaking the word, right? 00:31:28.23\00:31:32.95 By just speaking a word. 00:31:32.98\00:31:34.21 Well, that was a synagogue 00:31:34.24\00:31:35.36 and that was a new synagogue the foundation of it 00:31:35.39\00:31:37.79 are new synagogue on the old foundation walls. 00:31:37.82\00:31:40.22 Jesus used this as a source of His teaching in ministry. 00:31:40.25\00:31:45.09 This was a home of another woobies disciple. 00:31:45.12\00:31:48.28 Another disciple he would call very soon. 00:31:48.31\00:31:50.06 Now this disciple would not be 00:31:50.09\00:31:51.33 very well accepted because of his profession. 00:31:51.36\00:31:53.85 He was a republican, right? I mean I'm sorry. 00:31:53.88\00:31:57.38 You are the publican. Publican. 00:31:57.41\00:31:58.97 I got to get that straight. 00:31:59.00\00:32:01.15 He was a publican, he was a tax collector. 00:32:01.18\00:32:02.69 Now most of us don't say you our children. 00:32:02.72\00:32:04.21 Now, children, when you grow up 00:32:04.24\00:32:05.29 I hope you can be a tax collector, right? 00:32:05.32\00:32:08.66 And especially at this time 00:32:08.69\00:32:10.03 because tax collectors were considered 00:32:10.06\00:32:12.25 working for the enemy. 00:32:12.28\00:32:14.31 Do you know that a tax collector in Jesus day 00:32:14.34\00:32:16.57 could not go in synagogue to worship? 00:32:16.60\00:32:19.04 A tax collectors testimony 00:32:19.07\00:32:20.42 was not permitted in the court of law. 00:32:20.45\00:32:23.08 They are considered as unclean like a pig or a dog. 00:32:23.11\00:32:28.06 And yet, Jesus was about to call a tax collector to follow Him, 00:32:28.09\00:32:32.31 that tax collectors name was Levi. 00:32:32.34\00:32:34.48 Now it's interesting. 00:32:34.51\00:32:35.90 Jesus knew that this guy name Levi 00:32:35.93\00:32:37.52 which means join in Hebrew 00:32:37.55\00:32:38.97 that he wouldn't be very well accepted 00:32:39.00\00:32:41.68 because, you know, Jesus has some interesting disciples. 00:32:41.71\00:32:45.54 They had two names Simon. 00:32:45.57\00:32:46.81 Simon Peter and what was the other Simon name? 00:32:46.84\00:32:50.36 Simon the Zealot. 00:32:50.39\00:32:51.95 He was jealous for Jesus, right? 00:32:51.98\00:32:53.27 That why he was called the Zealot? 00:32:53.30\00:32:54.40 No. 00:32:54.43\00:32:55.67 He was part of the Sakkara. 00:32:55.70\00:32:57.31 Remember I talked about them in Jerusalem 00:32:57.34\00:32:59.02 the guy who into the two cliffs of bullets 00:32:59.05\00:33:03.29 from the machine gun into the Palestinians. 00:33:03.32\00:33:05.52 The part that dagger man, they care this daggers around 00:33:05.55\00:33:08.79 and they go and if they saw Romans soldier in the crowd 00:33:08.82\00:33:10.70 they just stricken or they saw someone 00:33:10.73\00:33:13.31 who was cooperating with the enemy 00:33:13.34\00:33:16.35 they will take him out. 00:33:16.38\00:33:17.90 And so one of Jesus' disciples 00:33:17.93\00:33:19.16 is actually part of this Sakkara Group. 00:33:19.19\00:33:23.00 Amazing, that Jesus would choose 00:33:23.03\00:33:25.30 a man like that to be a disciple. 00:33:25.33\00:33:28.14 Jesus knew that Simon the Zealot would never accept Levi, 00:33:28.17\00:33:32.46 so he gave him a new name. 00:33:32.49\00:33:35.10 He gave him a new name of Matthew. 00:33:35.13\00:33:38.13 Do you know what Matthew means? 00:33:38.16\00:33:40.12 Gift of God. Don't you love it? 00:33:40.15\00:33:43.65 It's pretty hard for me look down my nose 00:33:43.68\00:33:45.17 and say, "Hey, Gift of God, all right. 00:33:45.20\00:33:47.25 It's hard to look down your nose at somebody him a gift of God. 00:33:47.28\00:33:50.23 Jesus wanted every time that Simon the Zealot 00:33:50.26\00:33:52.61 or Simon Peter called Matthew to dinner, 00:33:52.64\00:33:54.76 but they knew that he was a gift of God. 00:33:54.79\00:33:58.73 And you know what? You too are a gift of God. 00:33:58.76\00:34:02.13 You know, the Bible says 00:34:02.16\00:34:03.19 we will all receive a new name and glory. 00:34:03.22\00:34:04.72 Levis already received his name from Jesus, hasn't He? 00:34:04.75\00:34:08.48 Isn't that like Jesus? 00:34:08.51\00:34:10.45 And what a gift for God Matthew was. 00:34:10.48\00:34:13.02 You know, He give us the most detailed gospel, 00:34:13.05\00:34:15.10 all His fabulous quotations and prophecies 00:34:15.13\00:34:17.75 from the Old Testament 00:34:17.78\00:34:18.84 how to fulfill them in the life of Jesus was special, special. 00:34:18.87\00:34:24.08 That's just like Jesus, isn't it? 00:34:24.11\00:34:26.18 Well, you know, the lake the Sea of Galilee was a scenes 00:34:26.21\00:34:28.60 for so many of Jesus' teachings and miracles. 00:34:28.63\00:34:30.46 Great crowds came one day. 00:34:30.49\00:34:32.20 Jesus was teaching the crowd, it was so great, 00:34:32.23\00:34:34.05 they were pressing and that He had to step 00:34:34.08\00:34:35.56 into a boat, probably Peter's boat 00:34:35.59\00:34:39.78 and there up in the boat He taught the crowds, 00:34:39.81\00:34:42.67 and then after they taught, 00:34:42.70\00:34:44.51 he said let's push off into the water 00:34:44.54\00:34:46.46 and they went off into the water 00:34:46.49\00:34:48.09 and there they caught a big haul of fish. 00:34:48.12\00:34:51.45 Several years ago, because of a drought 00:34:51.48\00:34:55.59 and because of all the intensive irrigation 00:34:55.62\00:34:57.51 the water level and Sea of Galilee drought 00:34:57.54\00:35:00.37 and guess what they found in the mud. 00:35:00.40\00:35:02.99 A first century boat. 00:35:03.02\00:35:05.47 Was it Peter's boat? Probably not. 00:35:05.50\00:35:07.13 But it was a boat much like Peter would have been in. 00:35:07.16\00:35:09.46 And we can see the boat here on the screen 00:35:09.49\00:35:11.75 and this is a boat much like Peter would have been in. 00:35:11.78\00:35:14.30 A boat much like Jesus would have slept in 00:35:14.33\00:35:16.81 when the storm was coming. 00:35:16.84\00:35:18.79 Well, I can tell you this. 00:35:18.82\00:35:19.85 I have been on the Sea of Galilee 00:35:19.88\00:35:21.18 and we've had beautiful calm mornings 00:35:21.21\00:35:24.11 with by evening time 00:35:24.14\00:35:25.34 the ferocious winds are whipping down. 00:35:25.37\00:35:27.13 As a matter of fact, wind surfing is a favorite sport 00:35:27.16\00:35:29.50 today on the Sea of Galilee. 00:35:29.53\00:35:31.25 It whips right down the Plain of Gennesaret 00:35:31.28\00:35:33.26 and comes down to the water, 00:35:33.29\00:35:35.37 two miles from Capernaum was Togba. 00:35:35.40\00:35:38.13 Church was built there that commemorated 00:35:38.16\00:35:39.64 the miracle of Jesus performed the feeding 5,000 people 00:35:39.67\00:35:43.19 with just a few loaves and fishes. 00:35:43.22\00:35:45.31 There is a large rock here 00:35:45.34\00:35:46.88 and it serve as an alter marking the traditional spot 00:35:46.91\00:35:49.94 where Jesus broke bread and fish. 00:35:49.97\00:35:52.54 In 350 AD, a church was built over, 00:35:52.57\00:35:54.81 the present church dates back to the 1980s, 00:35:54.84\00:35:56.92 but it's on the foundation of the old one 00:35:56.95\00:35:58.45 and that mosaic that you saw on the screen 00:35:58.48\00:36:00.98 that mosaic actually dates back to the century. 00:36:01.01\00:36:04.93 It's one of the most perfectly formed mosaics 00:36:04.96\00:36:07.12 in the country today. 00:36:07.15\00:36:08.79 Outside of this church there is an interesting baptistery 00:36:08.82\00:36:11.95 showing that this-- That at this particular time 00:36:11.98\00:36:14.61 the actually baptized by immersion 00:36:14.64\00:36:17.30 interesting enough, isn't it? 00:36:17.33\00:36:19.08 And so my son is there in that picture 00:36:19.11\00:36:20.89 he is ready to be baptized, 00:36:20.92\00:36:21.99 but there was no water. 00:36:22.02\00:36:24.34 Well, there is an ancient garden 00:36:24.37\00:36:27.14 showing that the practice was immersions I mentioned. 00:36:27.17\00:36:29.83 I thought about Peter 00:36:29.86\00:36:31.31 as I saw these brothers casting their nets 00:36:31.34\00:36:33.97 as I walked around the Sea of Galilee 00:36:34.00\00:36:35.41 one day they were casting their nets 00:36:35.44\00:36:37.26 and they were rewarded by these interesting fish, 00:36:37.29\00:36:39.36 a very small fish, 00:36:39.39\00:36:40.62 but you know what they call them? 00:36:40.65\00:36:41.99 Saint Peter's fish. Saint Peter's fish. 00:36:42.02\00:36:45.54 Interesting, isn't it? 00:36:45.57\00:36:47.02 Well, you know, it's so wonderful 00:36:47.05\00:36:48.64 to be there on the Sea of Galilee. 00:36:48.67\00:36:50.27 This rock commemorates the place where Jesus prepared 00:36:50.30\00:36:53.10 that fish breakfast for the disciples 00:36:53.13\00:36:55.15 after the resurrection and He met with them. 00:36:55.18\00:36:57.89 So many stories about Jesus. 00:36:57.92\00:36:59.74 This is impressive because this is the hill 00:36:59.77\00:37:02.80 where tradition says Jesus fed the 5,000 00:37:02.83\00:37:05.98 and He gave the Sermon on the Mount. 00:37:06.01\00:37:08.15 Now what's unusual about this is it's a natural amphitheatre. 00:37:08.18\00:37:11.66 I've had two groups there 00:37:11.69\00:37:12.73 and I can stand way down by the road 00:37:12.76\00:37:14.29 almost on the shore of Galilee 00:37:14.32\00:37:15.90 and had to go almost all the way up to the church 00:37:15.93\00:37:18.74 and they can hear me speaking without amplification. 00:37:18.77\00:37:21.61 Jesus chosen natural amphitheatre 00:37:21.64\00:37:23.91 to address these big crowds of people that had gathered. 00:37:23.94\00:37:26.84 It's very interesting. 00:37:26.87\00:37:27.90 Well, this church on the hill that commemorates 00:37:27.93\00:37:30.23 that beatitude is a beautiful Roman Catholic Church 00:37:30.26\00:37:32.72 built by Mussolini, don't figure. 00:37:32.75\00:37:35.60 Any way, it's a beautiful spot to look back down 00:37:35.63\00:37:38.86 over the Sea of Galilee and provides a wonderful view 00:37:38.89\00:37:41.84 and there was wonderful just to pause there. 00:37:41.87\00:37:43.59 I spent many of Sabbaths sitting there and reading 00:37:43.62\00:37:46.28 Sermon on the Mount 00:37:46.31\00:37:47.34 pondering the words of Jesus in the beatitudes. 00:37:47.37\00:37:50.89 Several miles around the lake is the big City of Tiberias, 00:37:50.92\00:37:54.90 and I wonder if that was what Jesus had in mind 00:37:54.93\00:37:57.15 and he said a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 00:37:57.18\00:38:01.53 It was a real place that he was pointing to. 00:38:01.56\00:38:03.98 Yes, it was a fabulous place. 00:38:04.01\00:38:07.79 Jesus went up from Galilee 00:38:07.82\00:38:10.91 to a place called Caesarea Philippi now. 00:38:10.94\00:38:13.33 And I first started my Biblical journey. 00:38:13.36\00:38:15.34 I didn't know that Caesarea Philippi in Caesarea. 00:38:15.37\00:38:18.23 But Caesarea Philippi was very, very special place. 00:38:18.26\00:38:21.08 Here is a first place that Jesus proclaimed 00:38:21.11\00:38:23.76 His Messiahship to His dispels. 00:38:23.79\00:38:25.68 Today it's known as Banias. 00:38:25.71\00:38:27.59 Anciently it was known as Panias, 00:38:27.62\00:38:29.17 you see in Arabic there is no P, so they call it Banias. 00:38:29.20\00:38:33.01 It's one of the three sources of the Jordan River. 00:38:33.04\00:38:34.81 The water comes gushing out from it use to be out of a cave, 00:38:34.84\00:38:38.32 now just kind of springs up from the ground, 00:38:38.35\00:38:40.46 but in ancient times this was a cannon of high place 00:38:40.49\00:38:43.43 where Baal was worshipped. 00:38:43.46\00:38:45.09 Then Alexander the great came through 00:38:45.12\00:38:46.65 and they began to worship pan there 00:38:46.68\00:38:48.57 and in Jesus day, Herod had built a temple to Caesar. 00:38:48.60\00:38:55.13 Thus it was called Caesarea Philippi. 00:38:55.16\00:38:58.05 So here is our Canaanite high place, 00:38:58.08\00:38:59.58 where Baal is worshiped, Pan was worshiped, 00:38:59.61\00:39:01.19 Caesar was currently being worshipped 00:39:01.22\00:39:02.79 and Jesus takes the disciples 00:39:02.82\00:39:04.72 and that's where ask the question 00:39:04.75\00:39:06.11 who men say that I'm, 00:39:06.14\00:39:08.31 and that's where he first reveals as Messiahship to them 00:39:08.34\00:39:11.11 and in fact he is saying I'm above Baal. 00:39:11.14\00:39:13.95 I'm above Pan and I love Creaser. 00:39:13.98\00:39:16.60 And of course, Peter said you are the Messiah, 00:39:16.63\00:39:20.94 the son of the living God, 00:39:20.97\00:39:22.63 Jesus accepted the worship there. 00:39:22.66\00:39:25.79 So fabulous place to go for visit. 00:39:25.82\00:39:26.85 Here on the screen is something very interesting 00:39:26.88\00:39:28.53 the other source of the Jordan River 00:39:28.56\00:39:29.91 there is a dam, this was actually 00:39:29.94\00:39:31.63 a 4,000 year of Canaanite gate 00:39:31.66\00:39:34.47 that was discovered until dam 00:39:34.50\00:39:36.52 and of course, Jordan means descending from them, okay? 00:39:36.55\00:39:41.22 Descending from dam the re-sender. 00:39:41.25\00:39:43.38 Well, we have to go back down 00:39:43.41\00:39:45.36 and look at some of the other stories 00:39:45.39\00:39:46.98 that take place as we leave Caesarea Philippi. 00:39:47.01\00:39:49.27 We go down to Mount Tabor. 00:39:49.30\00:39:50.89 This was a hill rising up from the Jezreel Valley 00:39:50.92\00:39:53.39 as we have seen many of the Old Testament stories, 00:39:53.42\00:39:55.71 including the Deborah the prophet and Barak, 00:39:55.74\00:39:58.57 but today as visited the cause. 00:39:58.60\00:40:00.03 This is a place that many people believe. 00:40:00.06\00:40:01.66 Jesus took Peter, James and John upon to a high hill 00:40:01.69\00:40:04.26 and there he was transfigured before them 00:40:04.29\00:40:06.74 and of course there Moses and Elijah appeared to him. 00:40:06.77\00:40:10.33 It's interesting that Peter said, 00:40:10.36\00:40:12.82 "The Lord, can we build a church or shrine to commemorate this?" 00:40:12.85\00:40:17.68 And the voice of God spoke and they fell to the ground, 00:40:17.71\00:40:20.11 but of course today there is a shrine and a church 00:40:20.14\00:40:22.69 and mosaics commemorate Moses and Elijah 00:40:22.72\00:40:26.00 appearing to Jesus on top of that mount. 00:40:26.03\00:40:29.06 Well, across the valley the small village of Maine, 00:40:29.09\00:40:31.56 here Jesus performed one of His most 00:40:31.59\00:40:33.83 touching miracles raising the son of a widow. 00:40:33.86\00:40:37.28 Isn't that like Jesus? 00:40:37.31\00:40:38.82 Interrupting a funeral in process? 00:40:38.85\00:40:41.54 This church keeps the memory of that story alive. 00:40:41.57\00:40:45.34 Now it was closer to go from Galilee to Jerusalem 00:40:45.37\00:40:49.65 by going down the central mountain spine, 00:40:49.68\00:40:53.03 but you had to go through the land of the Samaritan 00:40:53.06\00:40:55.66 so most Jews wouldn't do that 00:40:55.69\00:40:57.01 because they didn't like Samaritans. 00:40:57.04\00:40:58.68 Samaritans, we will talk about them tomorrow evening 00:40:58.71\00:41:01.34 and the presentation on Iraq, but Samaritans were kind of 00:41:01.37\00:41:04.39 an amalgamation of other groups of people 00:41:04.42\00:41:06.40 and the old Israelites. 00:41:06.43\00:41:08.12 The Syrians have mingled them together. 00:41:08.15\00:41:09.99 And so the Jews didn't like the Syrians 00:41:10.02\00:41:11.78 be out of the Samaritans because they have half breeds 00:41:11.81\00:41:14.35 and yet Jesus chose to go down the central mountain spine 00:41:14.38\00:41:18.36 and He stopped at a place called Shechem, 00:41:18.39\00:41:20.87 today it's called Nablus. 00:41:20.90\00:41:22.41 And there was a well there that was dug by Jacob. 00:41:22.44\00:41:27.26 And He stopped at Jacob's well and the disciples were hungry 00:41:27.29\00:41:30.51 so He sent them in the town to get something 00:41:30.54\00:41:32.20 and here it was noon, hottest part of the day 00:41:32.23\00:41:34.71 probably hot just like it was here in Kansas 00:41:34.74\00:41:37.01 a couple of days ago over 100 degrees over, 00:41:37.04\00:41:39.43 and Jesus was sitting there by the well 00:41:39.46\00:41:41.97 and loe and behold a woman comes up to draw water. 00:41:42.00\00:41:45.83 What on earth is she doing at noon? 00:41:45.86\00:41:47.58 It's a hot part of the day. 00:41:47.61\00:41:48.86 You know, most women when you draw your water. 00:41:48.89\00:41:52.82 If you need water when will you draw 00:41:52.85\00:41:54.54 in the morning, early at night, 00:41:54.57\00:41:56.38 when you work in your garden, morning late you know, 00:41:56.41\00:41:58.92 morning, early morning, late in the evening. 00:41:58.95\00:42:00.94 She is there because she is an outcast 00:42:00.97\00:42:03.99 and so she comes at noon. 00:42:04.02\00:42:05.96 Jesus reads her story right away, 00:42:05.99\00:42:07.48 He reads your life and He ask her for drink 00:42:07.51\00:42:10.00 and she say, "How is it that you are Jew 00:42:10.03\00:42:11.81 and you are asking me for a drink?" 00:42:11.84\00:42:13.50 Well, number one, men didn't really talk 00:42:13.53\00:42:15.01 with woman they didn't know 00:42:15.04\00:42:16.07 and Jews didn't talk with Samaritans of all things. 00:42:16.10\00:42:19.82 And you know what Jesus said? 00:42:19.85\00:42:21.33 "If you only knew who it was you are talking to, 00:42:21.36\00:42:23.70 you would ask me for a drink 00:42:23.73\00:42:25.80 and I would give you living water." 00:42:25.83\00:42:28.96 She said, "My Father Jacob dug, he dug this well along time ago 00:42:28.99\00:42:32.97 and you can give something better than he gave." 00:42:33.00\00:42:35.67 Well, Jesus then revealed her life to her. 00:42:35.70\00:42:38.65 She is impressed, he is a prophet. 00:42:38.68\00:42:40.42 She goes back in the town and says, 00:42:40.45\00:42:42.09 "Hey, come here a man who told me everything I've ever done." 00:42:42.12\00:42:45.36 And they came back and they listen to Jesus 00:42:45.39\00:42:46.98 and they believed not because of her words, 00:42:47.01\00:42:49.29 but because of what they heard Jesus say. 00:42:49.32\00:42:51.23 Isn't it like Jesus? 00:42:51.26\00:42:52.37 You know, Jesus breaks right through the culture 00:42:52.40\00:42:54.26 to those that people have. 00:42:54.29\00:42:55.34 He breaks through the culture of barriers. 00:42:55.37\00:42:57.21 He addressed a woman. 00:42:57.24\00:42:58.29 He addressed a woman from the Samaritans. 00:42:58.32\00:43:00.89 He broke down those bridges that people had built. 00:43:00.92\00:43:04.39 The Jesus saw a woman who was right for the harvest, 00:43:04.42\00:43:08.66 her decedents still live on Mount Gerizim today. 00:43:08.69\00:43:11.25 They posses an ancient copy of the Torah, 00:43:11.28\00:43:14.06 they still sacrifice a Passover lamb. 00:43:14.09\00:43:16.45 Here on the screen we can see this interesting picture. 00:43:16.48\00:43:18.88 This is actually Jacob's well. 00:43:18.91\00:43:20.72 You can see they've got a bucket of water coming up 00:43:20.75\00:43:22.61 and the flash is actually reflecting off 00:43:22.64\00:43:24.79 of the water in the bucket. 00:43:24.82\00:43:26.48 And it's pretty impressive to drink it, 00:43:26.51\00:43:27.80 but of course when you drink it, you see that really drinks it 00:43:27.83\00:43:30.68 and then they pour back into the well. 00:43:30.71\00:43:33.18 You may go, no. 00:43:33.21\00:43:35.47 And thousands of people 00:43:35.50\00:43:36.53 who have been drinking this water any way. 00:43:36.56\00:43:40.31 It's still worth drinking from to go there. 00:43:40.34\00:43:43.59 It's the same well that Jacob would have built long, long ago. 00:43:43.62\00:43:48.81 Well, her decedents were still there on Mount Gerizim today 00:43:48.84\00:43:53.28 and they possess some ancient copy of the Torah 00:43:53.31\00:43:58.72 and that reminds me of a trick question 00:43:58.75\00:44:01.08 that some people came along and ask to you this one day 00:44:01.11\00:44:03.00 they said, "Which is the greatest commandment?" 00:44:03.03\00:44:04.51 Remember that? 00:44:04.54\00:44:05.72 And Jesus invented something really new. 00:44:05.75\00:44:07.35 He said, "You know, you should Love the Lord your God 00:44:07.38\00:44:09.13 with all nor heart and with all nor soul nor your mind, right?" 00:44:09.16\00:44:11.68 No. He quoted the Shema here. 00:44:11.71\00:44:14.12 "O Israel the Lord our God the Lord is one, 00:44:14.15\00:44:15.64 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart 00:44:15.67\00:44:17.20 and all your soul and all your mind." 00:44:17.23\00:44:19.62 And the second commandment where I can do it, 00:44:19.65\00:44:21.10 you shall love your neighbors yourself. 00:44:21.13\00:44:22.43 He quote Moses again. 00:44:22.46\00:44:24.11 And I said, "Yeah, that makes sense. 00:44:24.14\00:44:26.30 That makes a lot of sense, 00:44:26.33\00:44:27.36 but the trick question was who is my neighbor, right? 00:44:27.39\00:44:33.26 Who is my neighbor? Well, Jesus told a parable. 00:44:33.29\00:44:38.05 We quote in the tenth Chapter of Luke 00:44:38.08\00:44:39.53 which answered this question. 00:44:39.56\00:44:40.79 "And the parable a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho." 00:44:40.82\00:44:43.91 Those words are very true, by the way. 00:44:43.94\00:44:45.72 Jerusalem's 25,000 feet above sea level, 00:44:45.75\00:44:47.98 Jericho is a thousand feet below sea level, 00:44:48.01\00:44:50.10 3,500 foot decent and 15 miles 00:44:50.13\00:44:53.06 a man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. 00:44:53.09\00:44:55.67 Now many people who go there they're pointing 00:44:55.70\00:44:57.75 to this modern kiosk along the modern highway, 00:44:57.78\00:45:00.45 but the real high, the real road have gone down the Wadi Qelt 00:45:00.48\00:45:03.72 and He was then walking down the Wadi Qelt 00:45:03.75\00:45:06.28 that we can see on the screen here 00:45:06.31\00:45:07.74 and as he walk down the Wadi Qelt 00:45:07.77\00:45:09.93 and if you ever walk that you know 00:45:09.96\00:45:11.14 what I'm talking of there is just caves everywhere 00:45:11.17\00:45:12.86 and robbers would hide in there. 00:45:12.89\00:45:14.41 And so Jesus told the story about this man was going down 00:45:14.44\00:45:17.28 and as robbers jumped out and they beat him up 00:45:17.31\00:45:19.54 and they stole his money, they left him for dead. 00:45:19.57\00:45:22.08 And then he had a good fortune that a priest came by 00:45:22.11\00:45:25.07 and the priest came by and said, 00:45:25.10\00:45:26.43 "My priest, God has reviled this to me, 00:45:26.46\00:45:28.10 I must take care of this man, right? 00:45:28.13\00:45:30.11 Don't worry. It might be a trap? 00:45:30.14\00:45:32.62 He walked on the other side. 00:45:32.65\00:45:33.84 Then I came down and he said, 00:45:33.87\00:45:35.19 "Oh, you know, I'm on my way to temple I can't stop. 00:45:35.22\00:45:38.22 And then a lonesome Samaritan came by. 00:45:38.25\00:45:42.74 And the lonesome Samaritan was not worried about it 00:45:42.77\00:45:46.03 being a trap and here was his enemy the Jew 00:45:46.06\00:45:50.32 and he went down and he nursed the man 00:45:50.35\00:45:53.06 and he poured oil and wine on to his wounds 00:45:53.09\00:45:56.48 and then he put him on his donkey 00:45:56.51\00:45:57.67 and they carried them to an den, 00:45:57.70\00:45:59.40 he told the innkeeper to take care of him 00:45:59.43\00:46:01.10 and he gave him money to take to pay his expenses he said. 00:46:01.13\00:46:03.44 If there is anything else you need 00:46:03.47\00:46:04.50 when I come back I'll take are of it. 00:46:04.53\00:46:07.02 And then Jesus gets to the point 00:46:07.05\00:46:10.05 that people are listening to the story there. 00:46:10.08\00:46:11.72 They are listening to what he is saying 00:46:11.75\00:46:13.68 and then Jesus asks the million dollar question. 00:46:13.71\00:46:16.71 Which of these three do you think was a neighbor 00:46:16.74\00:46:19.55 to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? 00:46:19.58\00:46:23.01 I can't even say the word. 00:46:23.04\00:46:25.53 They said, "An expert in the law replied, 00:46:25.56\00:46:27.50 the one who had mercy on him." 00:46:27.53\00:46:28.72 We can't even say Samaritan, still hard to get it out. 00:46:28.75\00:46:33.41 And Jesus said, "Go and do likewise." 00:46:33.44\00:46:38.76 Isn't that like Jesus? 00:46:38.79\00:46:40.73 He broke through the culture 00:46:40.76\00:46:41.95 to booze of His days spoke to foreigners. 00:46:41.98\00:46:44.85 He said Pedigree is not nearly 00:46:44.88\00:46:46.39 as important as what's in the person heart. 00:46:46.42\00:46:48.81 He spoke to woman, 00:46:48.84\00:46:49.87 He shared the good news that He brought to earth. 00:46:49.90\00:46:52.73 Did you know that that woman at the well was the first person 00:46:52.76\00:46:55.25 He revealed His Messiahship to? 00:46:55.28\00:46:57.82 That woman that we believe is a prostitute, 00:46:57.85\00:47:00.16 a Samaritan prostitute. 00:47:00.19\00:47:02.49 Jesus told a very practical religion. 00:47:02.52\00:47:04.30 He said, "Love your neighbors and even love your enemies." 00:47:04.33\00:47:10.75 It's so sad today that Jesus words have fallen on deaf ears 00:47:10.78\00:47:15.01 in this part of the world, but you know what else is sad? 00:47:15.04\00:47:18.97 It's fallen on deaf ears even here 00:47:19.00\00:47:21.12 in which he taught, hasn't it. 00:47:21.15\00:47:23.99 Jesus said to love your enemies 00:47:24.02\00:47:27.12 love your enemies Jesus in Jericho 00:47:27.15\00:47:30.76 and count of blind man by the gate, 00:47:30.79\00:47:33.00 compassionately he reached out and touched his eyes. 00:47:33.03\00:47:36.06 The man received his sight, here Jesus encounters Zacchaeus 00:47:36.09\00:47:39.03 and there is a tree that's pointing 00:47:39.06\00:47:41.19 to as a sycamore tree there in Jericho. 00:47:41.22\00:47:43.29 And he looked up and he saw 00:47:43.32\00:47:44.64 that little short tax collector. 00:47:44.67\00:47:46.65 And remembers what he said? 00:47:46.68\00:47:48.01 "Zaccheus, you come down, I'm going to your house today!" 00:47:48.04\00:47:53.08 Poor the people were just 00:47:53.11\00:47:54.74 they were whistling when that happened. 00:47:54.77\00:47:56.66 That was unbelievable to go and eat. 00:47:56.69\00:47:59.54 You see meals are covenant meals. 00:47:59.57\00:48:01.22 He was accepting Zaccheus in a covenant way 00:48:01.25\00:48:05.01 as He ate that meal and he was criticized 00:48:05.04\00:48:06.93 for touching the untouchable 00:48:06.96\00:48:08.17 through eating with the outcasts. 00:48:08.20\00:48:11.17 Jesus responded by saying, 00:48:11.20\00:48:13.21 "I have come to seek and to save those who are lost." 00:48:13.24\00:48:18.80 He told so many parables to counter the criticism, 00:48:18.83\00:48:21.61 but none so beautiful as that of the one lost sheep. 00:48:21.64\00:48:24.69 You know the whole country is so pastoral, 00:48:24.72\00:48:27.08 doesn't matter if you are up in the north 00:48:27.11\00:48:28.59 where the Jews are and the foothills of Mount Hermon 00:48:28.62\00:48:31.49 everything is so beautiful with all the grass 00:48:31.52\00:48:33.32 or if you are down there in the south 00:48:33.35\00:48:34.94 with the better one to dry hills Negev and the wilderness. 00:48:34.97\00:48:37.81 The Sheppard tenderly cares for his sheep. 00:48:37.84\00:48:40.79 Now, I shot these pictures of some sheep 00:48:40.82\00:48:45.49 and up in the Galilee area was a drew's Sheppard 00:48:45.52\00:48:49.08 and I always thought seep are very, very docile animals 00:48:49.11\00:48:51.86 you know, but I've taken these pictures. 00:48:51.89\00:48:53.41 You guys, that one right in the bottom left hand corner. 00:48:53.44\00:48:56.52 I had a pair of flip flops on and I'm taking this picture 00:48:56.55\00:48:59.65 and this sheep comes up and bites my foot. 00:48:59.68\00:49:03.77 It actually draws blood. 00:49:03.80\00:49:05.97 I'm one of the few people to be attacked by a sheep 00:49:06.00\00:49:07.66 in Israel I guess, but any way it was very surprising, 00:49:07.69\00:49:11.33 but Sheppard would still love their sheep 00:49:11.36\00:49:13.41 in spite of all of that, of course. 00:49:13.44\00:49:15.40 And Jesus tells a story about a Sheppard He had 100 sheep. 00:49:15.43\00:49:18.73 Remember the story? 00:49:18.76\00:49:19.95 And then we came into the sheep farm 00:49:19.98\00:49:22.51 and he counted them 98, 99, 00:49:22.54\00:49:25.17 one was missing, he left the hunt to 99. 00:49:25.20\00:49:27.98 He went out to look for that lost sheep 00:49:28.01\00:49:30.47 and he looked and he looked and he looked 00:49:30.50\00:49:32.22 until finally he discovered that lost sheep 00:49:32.25\00:49:34.12 and he got that lost sheep he gave him one ton lashing, 00:49:34.15\00:49:36.88 you stupid sheep, you better don't do this, 00:49:36.91\00:49:39.28 you could have been killed out her and so what he did? 00:49:39.31\00:49:41.48 No, no. 00:49:41.51\00:49:44.51 He bent over and he picked it up, 00:49:44.54\00:49:46.14 put it on His shoulders, 00:49:46.17\00:49:48.04 carried it back, rejoicing they found 00:49:48.07\00:49:52.11 that one sheep that had been lost. 00:49:52.14\00:49:55.05 And remember the punch line? 00:49:55.08\00:49:56.68 Jesus said, "I tell you, there is great rejoicing 00:49:56.71\00:50:00.05 in heaven when one sinner repents. 00:50:00.08\00:50:03.58 That's Jesus, that's what Jesus is all about. 00:50:03.61\00:50:08.12 Well, toward the closing of His ministry 00:50:08.15\00:50:10.24 His footsteps let Him back to Bethany. 00:50:10.27\00:50:11.94 It's just a mile-and-a-half from Jerusalem over the hill, 00:50:11.97\00:50:14.19 over the Mount of Olives. 00:50:14.22\00:50:15.41 It's a home of Mary and Martha, Lazarus. 00:50:15.44\00:50:17.88 He loved to visit with his friends. 00:50:17.91\00:50:20.11 He loved to visit with them. Martha was a best cook in town. 00:50:20.14\00:50:22.60 Mary had an incredible faith and she had been delivered 00:50:22.63\00:50:25.57 from the life of sin by Jesus and Nazareth. 00:50:25.60\00:50:27.49 What a joy it was. 00:50:27.52\00:50:28.55 He loved just to hang on the words of Jesus. 00:50:28.58\00:50:30.40 Jesus love to be with His friends there. 00:50:30.43\00:50:32.82 There are so unlike those wily scribes in the law 00:50:32.85\00:50:35.94 who constantly trying into entrap Jesus. 00:50:35.97\00:50:38.63 Bethany, Jesus s could just kind of relax 00:50:38.66\00:50:40.31 and mutual friends in the confront their home. 00:50:40.34\00:50:42.83 And one day Jesus got word 00:50:42.86\00:50:44.34 that His good friend Lazarus was sick. 00:50:44.37\00:50:46.71 He was sick. Jesus didn't go by the way. 00:50:46.74\00:50:49.54 He tarried for four days. 00:50:49.57\00:50:51.77 And they got word that Lazarus had died. 00:50:51.80\00:50:55.07 Lazarus had died they've been buried there 00:50:55.10\00:50:56.50 in the family tomb in Bethlehem, in Bethany. 00:50:56.53\00:51:00.72 He was buried in the family tomb Jesus arrived 00:51:00.75\00:51:02.60 and there were mourning and they were crying 00:51:02.63\00:51:04.35 over the loss of their brother and friend 00:51:04.38\00:51:05.83 and Martha came to Jesus, remember? 00:51:05.86\00:51:07.51 She said, "Lord, if you have been here, 00:51:07.54\00:51:08.85 my brother wouldn't have died." 00:51:08.88\00:51:11.07 And He said, "I'm the resurrection of the life." 00:51:11.10\00:51:13.64 If you believe you are gonna see some really great things. 00:51:13.67\00:51:15.91 She said, "But Lord, if you'd only been here he will be life." 00:51:15.94\00:51:18.73 Remember the story? Jesus takes an alt to the tomb. 00:51:18.76\00:51:21.54 He says, "Role the stone away." 00:51:21.57\00:51:22.60 They said, "But, Lord, you can't do that 00:51:22.63\00:51:24.27 because it's already stinking. 00:51:24.30\00:51:26.65 It's been four days." 00:51:26.68\00:51:27.71 Remember the purpose? 00:51:27.74\00:51:28.77 They told about tombs, they take him down, 00:51:28.80\00:51:30.12 they put him in that cave and put the stone over 00:51:30.15\00:51:32.48 and put all spices on because the body is gonna decay. 00:51:32.51\00:51:35.60 And he is says, "It's already stinking, 00:51:35.63\00:51:36.66 it's already routing in the tomb." 00:51:36.69\00:51:39.12 Role the stone away 00:51:39.15\00:51:41.22 and he spoke those words, remember? 00:51:41.25\00:51:43.30 Lazarus come forth and Lazarus stood in the tomb 00:51:43.33\00:51:48.70 and he came back to life. 00:51:48.73\00:51:50.47 And Jesus unwrapped him and they were just rejoicing. 00:51:50.50\00:51:53.08 Wow, 00:51:53.11\00:51:54.14 this is considered the crowning point of Jesus ministry 00:51:54.17\00:51:56.73 when He raised Lazarus from the dead I want to tell you, 00:51:56.76\00:51:59.21 it's just as important when He raises you and me 00:51:59.24\00:52:01.93 from the spiritual dead as what He did for Lazarus. 00:52:01.96\00:52:05.88 Well, this flew in the face of a group 00:52:05.91\00:52:08.19 of rulers named the Sadducees. 00:52:08.22\00:52:10.60 You see the Sadducees didn't like the Pharisees. 00:52:10.63\00:52:12.52 Pharisees, they live the law 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 00:52:12.55\00:52:15.66 Sadducees, they were the power holders 00:52:15.69\00:52:17.19 of the high priest, the chief priest 00:52:17.22\00:52:19.35 and they believe that there was no resurrection from the dead. 00:52:19.38\00:52:22.74 When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead there was proof 00:52:22.77\00:52:24.65 that they were wrong and so they laid aside 00:52:24.68\00:52:26.48 their scruples with the Pharisees, 00:52:26.51\00:52:28.30 they are united together for one purpose 00:52:28.33\00:52:30.28 destroying Jesus. 00:52:30.31\00:52:33.35 And it was just a matter of time until they would arrest Jesus 00:52:33.38\00:52:39.27 and putting the lives to death. 00:52:39.30\00:52:40.88 Soon Jesus would make His last trip to Jerusalem. 00:52:40.91\00:52:44.10 He will be arrested on friends Olive Garden called Gethsemane. 00:52:44.13\00:52:47.51 Gethsemane simply means the oil press. 00:52:47.54\00:52:49.32 The garden of the oil press. 00:52:49.35\00:52:50.50 He betrayed, convicted in the morning. 00:52:50.53\00:52:52.53 Those tireless feet that tried the land 00:52:52.56\00:52:55.42 and ministry for just three-and-a-half years 00:52:55.45\00:52:58.03 on so many errands of mercy will now be spiked to the tree. 00:52:58.06\00:53:03.73 Those lovely hands that touch the eyes of the blind 00:53:03.76\00:53:07.02 and the ears of the deaf will be stretched out on the bar 00:53:07.05\00:53:10.82 that mouth which uttered the greatest teachings 00:53:10.85\00:53:13.09 ever heard would be silenced in the tomb. 00:53:13.12\00:53:17.12 Just three-and-a-half short years, 00:53:17.15\00:53:19.39 Jesus was arrested taken, 00:53:19.42\00:53:21.62 He was tried before the Sanhedrin, 00:53:21.65\00:53:23.43 He was tried before Pilate, 00:53:23.46\00:53:26.43 He was sent to Herod the person who executed John the Baptist 00:53:26.46\00:53:29.71 and He was sent back to Pilate again. 00:53:29.74\00:53:31.79 Pilate said, "I find no fault in him 00:53:31.82\00:53:33.85 and yet he was condemned 00:53:33.88\00:53:35.53 to go out to a place with a skull." 00:53:35.56\00:53:37.84 He was placed a place with the skull 00:53:37.87\00:53:39.52 just three-and-a-half short years. 00:53:39.55\00:53:42.74 We talked about in our presentation on Jerusalem. 00:53:42.77\00:53:45.20 You know, that doesn't really matter garden tomb, 00:53:45.23\00:53:47.38 the church of the Holy Sepulcher. 00:53:47.41\00:53:49.07 He was taken out to a place where they executed people, 00:53:49.10\00:53:51.76 the purpose of the cross, was a strike fearing 00:53:51.79\00:53:54.21 that leave you on a cross 00:53:54.24\00:53:55.81 and you cry out for days and days, 00:53:55.84\00:53:57.66 it was a terrible experience. 00:53:57.69\00:54:00.07 Jesus was put on the cross, hung between heaven and earth. 00:54:00.10\00:54:03.11 The law said, "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree." 00:54:03.14\00:54:05.94 Jesus was hung on that tree at the gate of Jerusalem. 00:54:05.97\00:54:11.42 Three-and-a-half short years, but the incredible thing 00:54:11.45\00:54:14.78 is the story doesn't end at the cross. 00:54:14.81\00:54:18.37 Jesus was hung there on the cross, 00:54:18.40\00:54:20.04 but it doesn't end there 00:54:20.07\00:54:21.10 because the stone was rolled away, right? 00:54:21.13\00:54:24.60 The stone was rolled away. 00:54:24.63\00:54:26.58 And I want to tell you this evening, 00:54:26.61\00:54:28.21 there are mausoleums in this land 00:54:28.24\00:54:30.27 to Samuel the prophet, to Jacob, 00:54:30.30\00:54:32.05 to Abraham, to Rachel, to Joseph, 00:54:32.08\00:54:36.72 but there is no mausoleum to Jesus. 00:54:36.75\00:54:41.43 There are mausoleums to Mohammad in this part of the land, 00:54:41.46\00:54:46.03 but there is no place claiming to have the bones of Jesus 00:54:46.06\00:54:49.95 because He came back to life 00:54:49.98\00:54:52.34 that door there on the garden tomb says it all. 00:54:52.37\00:54:55.61 It says, "He is risen. He is not here." 00:54:55.64\00:55:02.77 In 1987, I took a five-week course in archeology 00:55:02.80\00:55:05.58 in Jerusalem by the scholar William Shay. 00:55:05.61\00:55:08.75 We toured hundreds of archeological sites. 00:55:08.78\00:55:10.78 We saw more sites we never wanted to see. 00:55:10.81\00:55:13.38 We kind of almost became a joke. 00:55:13.41\00:55:14.68 Dr. Shay said, "What is that? 00:55:14.71\00:55:16.64 One or four in this right house 00:55:16.67\00:55:18.21 or be at temple one of the other. 00:55:18.24\00:55:20.23 And about 50-50 chance has seemed to being right. 00:55:20.26\00:55:24.68 Finally exam question came 00:55:24.71\00:55:26.83 I was taking the class for credit 00:55:26.86\00:55:29.11 And the question was this, what difference does it make? 00:55:29.14\00:55:33.57 As I thought about that and pottered after 00:55:33.60\00:55:35.68 spending five weeks with him traveling around 00:55:35.71\00:55:37.81 and looking all these sites, 00:55:37.84\00:55:40.04 I came up with a two word answer. 00:55:40.07\00:55:42.24 It happened. It happened. 00:55:42.27\00:55:46.41 Now you have seen the land where the story took place. 00:55:46.44\00:55:49.43 You've been able to go in your minds 00:55:49.46\00:55:50.82 and eye retrace the journey that Jesus made 00:55:50.85\00:55:53.55 and hear His teachings. 00:55:53.58\00:55:55.18 Now I'm gonna tell you this evening that it happened. 00:55:55.21\00:55:58.15 It happened Jesus came back to life on a day 00:55:58.18\00:56:00.55 that was just as real as this day. 00:56:00.58\00:56:03.87 He came back to life and He defeated death 00:56:03.90\00:56:05.99 and because of that He offers to us life everlasting. 00:56:06.02\00:56:11.62 He defeated death so we no longer 00:56:11.65\00:56:12.93 have to be afraid of it. 00:56:12.96\00:56:15.03 That's the Jesus.
