Last night I lay a sleeping. 00:01:11.33\00:01:16.85 There came a dream so fair. 00:01:16.88\00:01:21.52 I stood in Old Jerusalem beside the temple there. 00:01:21.55\00:01:30.42 I heard the children singing, and ever as they sang, 00:01:30.45\00:01:38.78 me thought the voice of angels 00:01:38.81\00:01:43.01 from heaven in answer rang. 00:01:43.04\00:01:47.44 Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang. 00:01:47.47\00:02:01.76 Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing. 00:02:01.79\00:02:17.42 Hosanna in the highest! 00:02:17.45\00:02:24.84 Hosanna to your king! 00:02:24.87\00:02:32.46 the streets no longer rang. 00:02:52.42\00:02:56.84 Hushed were the glad Hosannas the little children sang. 00:02:56.87\00:03:05.45 The sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill, 00:03:05.48\00:03:14.62 as the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill, 00:03:14.65\00:03:23.31 as the shadow of the cross arose upon a lonely hill. 00:03:23.34\00:03:38.13 Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Hark how the angels sing. 00:03:38.16\00:03:53.37 Hosanna in the highest! 00:03:53.40\00:04:00.87 Hosanna to your king! 00:04:00.90\00:04:08.47 And once again the scene was changed, 00:04:23.95\00:04:28.58 new earth there seemed to be. 00:04:28.61\00:04:32.63 I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea. 00:04:32.66\00:04:41.59 The light of God was on it's streets, 00:04:41.62\00:04:46.23 the gates were open wide. 00:04:46.26\00:04:50.53 And all who would might enter, and no one was denied. 00:04:50.56\00:05:04.29 No need of moon or stars by night, 00:05:04.32\00:05:11.67 or sun to shine by day. 00:05:11.70\00:05:18.13 It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away. 00:05:18.16\00:05:47.70 Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Sing for the night is o'er! 00:05:47.73\00:06:02.98 Hosanna in the highest! 00:06:03.01\00:06:10.40 Hosanna forever more! 00:06:10.43\00:06:17.47 Hosanna in the highest! 00:06:17.50\00:06:27.60 Hosanna forever more! Amen! Amen! 00:06:27.63\00:06:45.00 I'd like to invite Eva to come forward at this time. 00:06:54.32\00:06:57.20 This is a radiant, glorious day. Amen, Amen. 00:07:32.48\00:07:35.24 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation. 00:08:22.71\00:08:31.77 O my soul, praise Him for He is our health and salvation. 00:08:33.52\00:08:42.75 All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near. 00:08:44.04\00:08:53.27 Join Him in glad adoration. 00:08:53.30\00:09:00.20 Praise to the Lord who o're all things so wondrously reigneth. 00:09:11.19\00:09:20.04 Shelters thee under His wings, Yea, so gently sustaineth. 00:09:20.07\00:09:29.36 Hast thou not seen how thy desires e'er have been 00:09:29.39\00:09:37.41 granted in what He ordaineth. 00:09:37.44\00:09:43.31 Praise to the Lord who doth prosper thy 00:09:49.03\00:10:02.79 Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee. 00:10:02.82\00:10:16.30 Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, 00:10:16.33\00:10:32.38 if with His love He befriend thee. 00:10:32.41\00:10:42.90 Praise to the Lord, O let all that is in me adore Him. 00:10:53.31\00:11:02.82 All that hath life and breath come now with before Him. 00:11:04.74\00:11:14.31 Let the 'amen' sound from His people again. 00:11:14.34\00:11:24.97 Gladly for aye we adore Him! 00:11:25.00\00:11:31.08 We adore Him! We adore Him! 00:11:31.11\00:11:38.39 Praise to the Lord! 00:11:38.42\00:11:41.68 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! 00:11:41.71\00:11:47.14 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Amen! Amen! 00:11:47.17\00:12:01.69 Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:12:58.84\00:13:00.46 Our Father in heaven, what a wonderful privilege it is 00:13:00.49\00:13:07.04 to come to Your house of worship on Your Holy Sabbath day, 00:13:07.07\00:13:10.74 to render You honor, glory, and praise such as you deserve, 00:13:10.77\00:13:17.98 because You are our Creator, and our Redeemer. 00:13:18.01\00:13:22.27 We ask that as we open Your Holy Word, that Your Spirit 00:13:22.30\00:13:26.77 will hover over this place. 00:13:26.80\00:13:28.69 Give us clear minds and tender hearts. 00:13:28.72\00:13:32.69 And give us the willingness to live in harmony with Your will. 00:13:32.72\00:13:37.62 We thank You for hearing our prayer for we ask it 00:13:37.65\00:13:41.76 in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:13:41.79\00:13:44.49 In 1 Corinthians 10 the apostle Paul tells several experiences 00:13:46.28\00:13:54.89 of the children of Israel as they left Egypt 00:13:54.92\00:13:58.93 on their journey to Canaan. 00:13:58.96\00:14:00.95 And at the conclusion of this passage, the apostle Paul 00:14:00.98\00:14:07.43 tells us that these experiences were actually written for us 00:14:07.46\00:14:13.26 who are living in the last days of human history. 00:14:13.29\00:14:18.10 I'd like to begin by reading from 1 Corinthians 10:11. 00:14:18.13\00:14:26.33 Here the apostle Paul says this: 00:14:26.36\00:14:28.54 That is to Israel. 00:14:33.86\00:14:35.70 The Greek word is types. 00:14:39.73\00:14:42.12 So the apostle Paul tells us that all of the experiences of 00:14:55.58\00:14:59.60 Israel, from Egypt to Canaan, were types, or they were 00:14:59.63\00:15:03.73 illustrations, or examples for us who are living in the last 00:15:03.76\00:15:09.47 days of human history. 00:15:09.50\00:15:11.69 Now what I would like us to do in our study today is to examine 00:15:11.72\00:15:17.93 the journey of Israel from Egypt to Canaan. 00:15:17.96\00:15:21.87 And as we examine this story we're going to notice 00:15:21.90\00:15:25.91 that their experience actually parallels our own personal 00:15:25.94\00:15:32.23 journey from this world to the heavenly Canaan. 00:15:32.26\00:15:36.04 I would like to begin at Exodus 1:13, 14, Exodus 1:13, 14. 00:15:36.07\00:15:48.32 You see, the children of Israel were in bondage. 00:15:48.35\00:15:52.39 They were slaves. In fact it tells us here that they were 00:15:52.42\00:15:57.66 in hard bondage. They served with rigor. 00:15:57.69\00:16:02.02 Let's read verses 13 and 14. 00:16:02.05\00:16:06.38 In other words, the children of Israel were slaves in Egypt. 00:16:33.84\00:16:38.83 In fact they were born as slaves. 00:16:38.86\00:16:40.99 They had no choice in the matter. 00:16:41.02\00:16:42.54 Imagine them day after day, week after week, year after year 00:16:42.57\00:16:49.18 serving, building perhaps the pyramids of Egypt. 00:16:49.21\00:16:54.73 Now they had no merit to offer God for God to deliver them. 00:16:54.76\00:17:00.02 In fact they had fallen into the idolatry of Egypt, and therefore 00:17:00.05\00:17:06.17 they deserved exactly what they were involved in. 00:17:06.20\00:17:10.60 And as they were there serving day after day, many times they 00:17:10.63\00:17:16.48 must have thought that their case was hopeless. 00:17:16.51\00:17:20.10 There was no way that they could deliver themselves. 00:17:20.13\00:17:23.48 You know their plight is similar to our plight 00:17:23.51\00:17:26.97 before we accepted Jesus. 00:17:27.00\00:17:28.75 The Bible tells us that we are born into slavery. 00:17:28.78\00:17:32.62 The flesh cannot perform good. 00:17:32.65\00:17:35.88 We are just as much spiritual slaves as Israel were slaves 00:17:35.91\00:17:41.12 literally in the land of Egypt. 00:17:41.15\00:17:43.59 Born in to slavery, bitterly serving sin, not able to deliver 00:17:43.62\00:17:49.85 ourselves, no merit to offer God; it appeared like 00:17:49.88\00:17:55.61 our life was hopeless. 00:17:55.64\00:17:58.41 But the Bible tells us that in the midst of their bondage, 00:17:58.44\00:18:02.69 and their pain, and their sorrow, without any merit 00:18:02.72\00:18:06.36 to offer to God, they cried out to God. 00:18:06.39\00:18:10.65 We find this in Exodus 2:23, 24. It says here: 00:18:10.68\00:18:19.06 Notice the terminology. 00:18:28.56\00:18:30.06 So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant 00:18:40.92\00:18:46.49 with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 00:18:46.52\00:18:50.05 Notice the terminology: groaning, crying out to God 00:18:50.08\00:18:55.40 in their helplessness, in their desperation, because they knew 00:18:55.43\00:18:59.84 that in themselves, they had no hope of being 00:18:59.87\00:19:03.98 delivered from bondage. 00:19:04.01\00:19:05.42 How similar this is to our own personal experience. 00:19:05.45\00:19:10.44 In our bondage to sin, in our bondage to the world, 00:19:10.47\00:19:15.59 when our case appeared hopeless, born into slavery, we cried out 00:19:15.62\00:19:22.64 to God, and God heard our plea, God heard our cry. 00:19:22.67\00:19:29.60 Now who were Israel in bondage to? 00:19:29.63\00:19:34.65 You know, in the book of Ezekiel 29:3 we find a reference 00:19:34.68\00:19:42.17 to Pharaoh who was the king of Egypt. 00:19:42.20\00:19:45.25 Ezekiel 29:3. And, by the way, I'm reading from the 00:19:45.28\00:19:53.03 New King James Version. 00:19:53.06\00:19:54.30 I prefer the way that it reads in the King James Version. 00:19:54.33\00:19:58.13 And so I'm going to make a slight change from 00:19:58.16\00:20:00.54 the New King James. 00:20:00.57\00:20:01.60 It says there in verse 3 of Ezekiel 29: 00:20:01.63\00:20:05.35 The New King James says monster. 00:20:19.72\00:20:22.38 So Israel was in bondage to the great dragon, Pharaoh, 00:20:34.05\00:20:38.81 according to Ezekiel 29:3. 00:20:38.84\00:20:43.46 And as we read the story in the book of Exodus we discover 00:20:43.49\00:20:47.59 that this great dragon had no intention of allowing 00:20:47.62\00:20:51.75 Israel to go free. 00:20:51.78\00:20:53.37 They were his slaves. 00:20:53.40\00:20:55.81 They were his servants. 00:20:55.84\00:20:57.59 And he was not going to allow them to escape from his hands. 00:20:57.62\00:21:02.45 In fact, we find in Exodus 5:2 the attitude of this despot, 00:21:02.48\00:21:08.78 of this great dragon. It says there: 00:21:08.81\00:21:12.16 You see Israel served the interests of Pharaoh. 00:21:28.82\00:21:32.16 Pharaoh could not carry on his program without them. 00:21:32.19\00:21:36.01 And so he hung onto them for dear life, not wishing to lose 00:21:36.04\00:21:41.51 them for his service. 00:21:41.54\00:21:43.31 But the Bible tells us, and we just read it from Exodus 2:24, 00:21:43.34\00:21:51.06 and verse 25, that God remembered His covenant. 00:21:51.09\00:21:56.37 Let's read again Exodus 2:24. 00:21:56.40\00:21:59.62 I want you to notice the reason why God acknowledged Israel. 00:22:19.01\00:22:23.52 He did not acknowledge Israel because they were good, 00:22:23.55\00:22:27.87 because they were obeying God's law, 00:22:27.90\00:22:31.97 because they were holy. 00:22:32.00\00:22:34.08 God decided to intervene in their case 00:22:34.11\00:22:38.63 because of His covenant. 00:22:38.66\00:22:41.24 Not because they earned His favor, 00:22:41.27\00:22:44.18 but because of His pure grace, and His pure mercy. 00:22:44.21\00:22:49.34 His love for them expressed in the covenant which He gave to 00:22:49.37\00:22:54.84 Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 00:22:54.87\00:22:56.58 And which, by the way, was the covenant that Jesus made with 00:22:56.61\00:22:59.93 His Father in the ceaseless ages of eternity; that He was going 00:22:59.96\00:23:05.21 to intervene to save. 00:23:05.24\00:23:06.80 Not because Israel was good, but because God was good. 00:23:06.83\00:23:11.83 How similar to us who are born into bondage, 00:23:11.86\00:23:16.03 who are born into sin, whose case appears to be hopeless. 00:23:16.06\00:23:20.24 We cry out in our desperation to God. 00:23:20.27\00:23:23.98 We're slaves to Satan who, by the way, 00:23:24.02\00:23:27.69 in the Bible is called also the great dragon. 00:23:27.72\00:23:30.81 We appear to not be able to be freed. 00:23:30.84\00:23:34.24 And yet God, because of His mercy, and because of His grace, 00:23:34.28\00:23:38.25 not because we're good, not because we've earned His favor, 00:23:38.29\00:23:42.22 He delivered us from bondage to sin and to the world. 00:23:42.26\00:23:47.73 Now it's interesting to notice, as the story develops, 00:23:47.77\00:23:53.21 that a deliverer was born in Egypt. 00:23:53.24\00:23:58.00 His name, of course, was Moses. 00:23:58.03\00:24:01.03 We find this in Exodus 1:22, Exodus 1:22. 00:24:01.06\00:24:09.49 Pharaoh knew that a deliverer was perhaps going to be born. 00:24:09.52\00:24:15.49 And so Pharaoh decided that he was going to nip this 00:24:15.53\00:24:19.43 in the bud, so to speak. 00:24:19.47\00:24:21.77 And so we find in Exodus 1:22: 00:24:21.81\00:24:26.48 Notice that this great dragon, Pharaoh, 00:24:41.22\00:24:43.91 aware of the possibility that a deliverer was going to be born, 00:24:43.94\00:24:47.93 killed all of the male children in the hopes of 00:24:47.96\00:24:53.02 killing the deliverer. 00:24:53.06\00:24:55.02 We find in Exodus 2:10 that this deliverer was born. 00:24:55.05\00:24:59.94 It says there in verse 10: And the child grew, 00:24:59.97\00:25:03.88 and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, 00:25:03.91\00:25:07.78 and he became her son. 00:25:07.82\00:25:09.98 How similar this story is to the story of Revelation 12. 00:25:18.03\00:25:23.06 There you have a great dragon standing next to the woman 00:25:23.10\00:25:28.10 to devour her child as soon as the child is born. 00:25:28.14\00:25:32.11 Interestingly enough, it was a king called Herod who had all 00:25:32.14\00:25:37.54 of the male children, two years and under, killed. 00:25:37.58\00:25:42.22 In other words, the story of the deliverer in Egypt is being 00:25:42.26\00:25:46.00 reenacted on a larger scale with the deliverer of the human race. 00:25:46.03\00:25:50.86 Because Satan, the great dragon, stood next to the woman 00:25:50.90\00:25:55.35 who was about to bring Jesus into the world. 00:25:55.39\00:25:58.32 And the devil wanted to do everything to destroy Him. 00:25:58.36\00:26:02.33 But as Moses was preserved in Egypt, and protected in Egypt, 00:26:02.36\00:26:07.81 so Jesus was protected as He was born into this world 00:26:07.85\00:26:12.35 to bring salvation and liberation to the human race. 00:26:12.39\00:26:16.82 Now it's interesting to notice, as I've mentioned previously 00:26:16.86\00:26:21.62 in our study, that God did not deliver Israel from bondage 00:26:21.66\00:26:26.39 because they were obedient to Him. 00:26:26.42\00:26:27.87 In fact as we read the story, God did not give Israel 00:26:27.91\00:26:31.45 the ten commandments while they were in bondage in Egypt. 00:26:31.49\00:26:35.00 We're going to notice that He gave them the 00:26:35.04\00:26:37.17 commandments later. 00:26:37.20\00:26:38.56 Now why did God not give Israel the ten commandments and say, 00:26:38.60\00:26:43.34 Folks, I'm giving you these commandments. 00:26:43.38\00:26:45.76 When you obey them, then I'm going to deliver you. 00:26:45.79\00:26:50.15 When you measure up I'm going to deliver you. 00:26:50.19\00:26:53.32 The fact is that they could not obey the commandments of God 00:26:53.36\00:26:57.96 in Egypt, because they were slaves of Pharaoh. 00:26:58.00\00:27:01.65 And no one can serve two masters. 00:27:01.69\00:27:05.51 God could not ask Israel to obey Him until He had delivered them 00:27:05.55\00:27:11.04 from their first master. 00:27:11.08\00:27:13.47 In fact, do you know that Israel tried to keep 00:27:13.50\00:27:18.20 the Sabbath in Egypt? even before Exodus 16, 00:27:18.24\00:27:22.90 the manna episode. 00:27:22.94\00:27:24.38 We find that Israel attempted to keep the Sabbath. 00:27:24.42\00:27:29.97 You say, How do we know that? 00:27:30.00\00:27:31.08 Well, in Exodus 5 we have Moses going into Pharaoh, 00:27:31.12\00:27:36.45 Moses and Aaron, and they say, We want to take Israel 00:27:36.48\00:27:41.74 out into the wilderness for three days to worship the Lord. 00:27:41.78\00:27:46.67 Do you know what Moses and Aaron were actually 00:27:46.71\00:27:49.28 asking Pharaoh to do? 00:27:49.31\00:27:51.04 They actually were going to go out, and they were going to 00:27:51.08\00:27:54.09 celebrate the Holy Sabbath. 00:27:54.13\00:27:56.00 You say, How do we know that? 00:27:56.03\00:27:57.83 Well, in Exodus 5 we find the answer. 00:27:57.87\00:28:02.36 Exodus 5:5. When Moses and Aaron go in and they say: 00:28:02.40\00:28:08.14 Let Israel go to celebrate this feast in the desert, 00:28:08.17\00:28:11.90 or this religious celebration in the desert. 00:28:11.93\00:28:13.97 Notice in verse 5: 00:28:14.00\00:28:15.61 Shabbat 00:28:23.59\00:28:25.14 The word there is Shabbat, which is consistently used in the 00:28:26.58\00:28:31.64 Old Testament to describe the Holy Sabbath. 00:28:31.68\00:28:34.37 In other words, Moses and Aaron were saying, We want to take 00:28:34.41\00:28:38.08 Israel out into the desert to celebrate God's Holy Sabbath. 00:28:38.12\00:28:41.75 Could they do it? Not while they were slaves. 00:28:41.79\00:28:45.66 Because we're told in the story that Pharaoh made their 00:28:45.69\00:28:49.00 bondage even worse. 00:28:49.03\00:28:50.30 You see, they couldn't keep the Sabbath while they were 00:28:50.33\00:28:53.22 in bondage in Egypt. 00:28:53.25\00:28:54.48 They had to be delivered from their first slave master, 00:28:54.52\00:28:59.14 so that now they could render service to 00:28:59.17\00:29:01.73 their new master, God. 00:29:01.77\00:29:03.95 And, of course, the night that they were delivered there was a 00:29:03.98\00:29:08.60 very special ceremony that indicated their deliverance. 00:29:08.64\00:29:13.79 We all know what it is. 00:29:13.83\00:29:16.42 It is the Passover. 00:29:16.45\00:29:19.14 Go with me to Exodus 12:26, 27, Exodus 12:26, 27. 00:29:19.17\00:29:30.98 So the people bowed their heads and worshipped. 00:29:53.89\00:29:58.17 What was the sign of their deliverance from bondage 00:29:58.20\00:30:01.99 to their first master? the Passover. 00:30:02.02\00:30:04.73 By the way, a lamb was chosen. 00:30:04.76\00:30:08.23 The lamb had no defect. 00:30:08.27\00:30:10.66 It was to be sacrificed at evening. 00:30:10.69\00:30:13.93 No bones were to be broken. 00:30:13.97\00:30:16.91 And the blood was to be applied to the doorposts. 00:30:16.95\00:30:20.67 Have you ever read what the apostle Paul says in 00:30:20.70\00:30:24.90 1 Corinthians 5:7 where he explains that Christ, 00:30:24.94\00:30:29.10 our Passover, has been what? 00:30:29.14\00:30:31.92 Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. 00:30:31.95\00:30:36.80 So the sign of our deliverance is the death of Jesus. 00:30:36.84\00:30:41.69 You see, Jesus was also a lamb without defect. 00:30:41.72\00:30:45.66 Jesus also died at evening. 00:30:45.69\00:30:48.43 No bones of His body were broken, and His blood was to 00:30:48.46\00:30:53.60 be applied to our own personal lives. 00:30:53.64\00:30:56.52 So as the sign of deliverance for Israel from Egypt was 00:30:56.55\00:31:01.84 the blood of the lamb, so the sign of our deliverance also 00:31:01.88\00:31:06.45 is the blood of the lamb that takes away the sin of the world. 00:31:06.49\00:31:11.03 You see, we can't serve God anymore than Israel could, 00:31:11.07\00:31:16.12 as long as we are in bondage to sin, to Satan, and to the world. 00:31:16.15\00:31:20.70 We had to be delivered from bondage so that 00:31:20.73\00:31:23.98 now we can serve God. 00:31:24.02\00:31:25.27 And, of course, the deliverance came as a result of the blood 00:31:25.30\00:31:29.54 of the lamb which was shed. 00:31:29.58\00:31:31.52 But folks, Pharaoh was not about to let Israel go 00:31:31.56\00:31:39.34 without a fight; without a fight to the death. 00:31:39.37\00:31:42.98 And so we find in Exodus 14 that Pharaoh got 600 00:31:43.01\00:31:48.65 of his choice chariots. 00:31:48.68\00:31:50.24 He got his armies together. 00:31:50.27\00:31:51.76 And now he decided he was not going to let these people, 00:31:51.79\00:31:55.17 delivered by the blood of the lamb go. 00:31:55.20\00:31:58.47 And so he gets his 600 chariots, and he goes after Israel, 00:31:58.51\00:32:03.01 which has escaped his power. 00:32:03.04\00:32:05.28 He's not going to give up these people 00:32:05.32\00:32:07.32 without a fierce conflict. 00:32:07.35\00:32:09.04 How similar it is to our experience. 00:32:09.08\00:32:12.23 When we choose to receive Jesus as our Savior, 00:32:12.26\00:32:16.32 when we accept the blood of Christ, 00:32:16.36\00:32:19.09 the devil doesn't give up! 00:32:19.12\00:32:20.52 The devil comes after us with a vengeance because he wants 00:32:20.55\00:32:24.99 to take us back as his servants. 00:32:25.02\00:32:27.00 He doesn't want us to be free. 00:32:27.03\00:32:28.93 And so Pharaoh comes after Israel. 00:32:28.97\00:32:31.76 And now Israel is at the edge of the Red Sea. 00:32:31.80\00:32:35.50 There's no escape. 00:32:35.53\00:32:37.68 The Egyptians are behind them. 00:32:37.71\00:32:39.84 There are mountains on one side, a desert on the other side, 00:32:39.87\00:32:43.75 the sea in front of them. 00:32:43.79\00:32:45.82 It appears like their case is hopeless. 00:32:45.85\00:32:48.69 But then something spectacular happens. 00:32:48.72\00:32:51.49 Notice 1 Corinthians 10:1, 2, 1 Corinthians 10:1, 2. 00:32:51.53\00:32:59.89 There's a very important expression that I want 00:32:59.93\00:33:01.85 us to notice here. It says: 00:33:01.88\00:33:03.73 And now notice verse 2. 00:33:13.76\00:33:15.49 Question: Was Israel baptized? Yes, they were. 00:33:24.31\00:33:27.90 Who were they baptized into? 00:33:27.94\00:33:29.51 They were baptized into Moses, interestingly enough. 00:33:29.54\00:33:34.97 They were baptized in the sea! 00:33:35.00\00:33:37.18 In other words, after they were delivered by the 00:33:37.22\00:33:39.57 blood of the lamb, they come to the baptismal font, so to speak. 00:33:39.60\00:33:44.27 And now they're going to go through the waters. 00:33:44.31\00:33:46.91 They are going to be baptized. 00:33:46.95\00:33:48.75 And have you ever noticed what happened at their baptism? 00:33:48.79\00:33:52.32 All of their old life was buried in the waters. 00:33:52.36\00:33:57.31 All of their old taskmasters, their old man 00:33:57.34\00:34:02.26 is buried in the waters. 00:34:02.29\00:34:04.30 And when they come out on the other side of the sea, 00:34:04.33\00:34:08.89 they come out to newness of life, a fully and completely 00:34:08.93\00:34:13.45 delivered people. Amen, Amen. 00:34:13.49\00:34:15.62 How similar to our experience. 00:34:15.65\00:34:17.72 We were born into bondage; slaves of the great dragon, 00:34:17.75\00:34:22.26 not being able to escape, our case appearing hopeless. 00:34:22.29\00:34:26.86 And yet we cried out to God, and God by His mercy, 00:34:26.89\00:34:30.50 not because we're good, but because of his mercy, 00:34:30.53\00:34:34.57 He delivered us from bondage to Satan, and to sin. 00:34:34.61\00:34:38.29 And He delivered us through the blood of the lamb 00:34:38.32\00:34:41.97 that takes away the sin of the world. 00:34:42.00\00:34:43.48 And then, of course, He led us to the baptismal waters. 00:34:43.52\00:34:48.49 And in the baptismal waters our old life was 00:34:48.53\00:34:51.98 buried in the waters, and we were born to newness of life. 00:34:52.02\00:34:58.14 Do you know, folks, that in Galatians 3:26 we are told that 00:34:58.18\00:35:04.26 when we are baptized, we are baptized into Christ. 00:35:04.30\00:35:09.61 Do you remember the expression, into Moses? 00:35:09.65\00:35:13.16 Israel was baptized into Moses. 00:35:13.19\00:35:15.80 We are baptized into Christ. 00:35:15.84\00:35:18.38 And when we're baptized into Christ all of our old life 00:35:18.42\00:35:23.19 is buried, and forgotten by God, and we come forth from 00:35:23.23\00:35:27.97 the waters to newness of life; delivered from our 00:35:28.01\00:35:31.96 old life of bondage. 00:35:31.99\00:35:33.59 And then, of course, in Exodus 15 the people now sing. 00:35:33.62\00:35:38.41 Notice Exodus 15:1. It says here: 00:35:38.44\00:35:43.44 And we're not going to read the whole song. 00:35:50.23\00:35:52.74 It's all of Exodus 15. 00:35:52.78\00:35:54.34 Now let me ask you, Do you believe that Israel sang that 00:35:54.38\00:35:57.49 song with enthusiasm? 00:35:57.53\00:35:58.95 Or do you think they just stood around? didn't open the hymnal? 00:35:58.98\00:36:03.06 Because it was written by Moses for them to sing. 00:36:03.09\00:36:05.05 It wasn't spontaneous. 00:36:05.08\00:36:06.35 Do you suppose they sang with enthusiasm, and with meaning? 00:36:06.38\00:36:10.37 Absolutely! And the reason why is because they were singing 00:36:10.40\00:36:14.36 about their experience. 00:36:14.39\00:36:15.71 You see, when we come forth from the baptismal waters, 00:36:15.74\00:36:19.34 we come forth to newness of life. 00:36:19.38\00:36:21.32 And now we can sing praises to the Lord. 00:36:21.35\00:36:24.10 We can sing Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It! 00:36:24.14\00:36:27.75 You know, it's interesting to see what happens when I 00:36:27.78\00:36:30.26 baptize some people. 00:36:30.29\00:36:31.39 I remember one woman that I baptized in Torrington, Wyoming, 00:36:31.42\00:36:35.34 many years ago when I pastored there. 00:36:35.37\00:36:37.29 She had been involved in drugs, and in alcohol. 00:36:37.33\00:36:43.32 Her life was a mess! 00:36:43.36\00:36:45.22 And I studied with her. 00:36:45.25\00:36:47.04 She made her decision for Jesus. 00:36:47.08\00:36:49.43 The day of her baptism, I buried her in the waters. 00:36:49.46\00:36:52.25 When she came out of the waters, she came out... 00:36:52.29\00:36:54.89 I didn't know what had happened to her. 00:36:54.92\00:36:56.67 She raised her arms and she started going shew, shew, shew. 00:36:56.70\00:37:00.81 And, you know, I didn't think that she'd swallowed water. 00:37:00.85\00:37:04.93 It didn't look like it. 00:37:04.96\00:37:06.06 And so I said, What happened to you? 00:37:06.09\00:37:07.94 She says, I'm so excited that this is the only way 00:37:07.97\00:37:11.07 that I could express it. Ha ha. 00:37:11.16\00:37:14.28 Talk about enthusiasm when we're born into Jesus; 00:37:14.32\00:37:17.82 when our life is buried, when we've accepted deliverance 00:37:17.86\00:37:22.05 through the blood of the lamb. Amen! 00:37:22.09\00:37:23.79 But now listen up. 00:37:23.82\00:37:24.85 The pilgrimage of Israel did not end there. 00:37:24.88\00:37:27.99 You see, they had to go all the way to Canaan. 00:37:28.02\00:37:32.95 You see, for most Christians when you receive Jesus 00:37:32.98\00:37:37.37 as Savior, and you're baptized, that's it. Not so! 00:37:37.40\00:37:42.22 You see, Israel still had to cross a desert, 00:37:42.25\00:37:45.95 and they had to finally arrive in Canaan. 00:37:45.98\00:37:49.61 Now let me ask you, If you were going to cross a desert, 00:37:49.64\00:37:52.83 which two things would you make provision for 00:37:52.86\00:37:55.72 before you started your journey? 00:37:55.75\00:37:57.98 Food and what? and water. 00:37:58.01\00:38:02.71 Now remember that the pilgrimage of Israel 00:38:02.74\00:38:04.97 is a sign of our pilgrimage. 00:38:05.00\00:38:07.20 See, as they left Egypt, we've left the world. 00:38:07.23\00:38:10.19 As they cried out, we cried out. 00:38:10.22\00:38:13.13 As they were in bondage we are in bondage. 00:38:13.16\00:38:15.69 As God intervened without merit, He intervenes without merit. 00:38:15.72\00:38:19.68 As they received the blood of the lamb, 00:38:19.71\00:38:21.71 we've received the blood of the lamb. 00:38:21.74\00:38:23.26 As they buried their old life, we buried our old life. 00:38:23.29\00:38:27.11 As they resurrected to newness of life, 00:38:27.14\00:38:29.34 we resurrected to newness of life. 00:38:29.37\00:38:31.42 As they sang, we are to sing. Amen! 00:38:31.45\00:38:35.67 But it doesn't end there. 00:38:35.71\00:38:37.79 We still have a desert to cross. 00:38:37.82\00:38:40.74 We still have to make it to Canaan. 00:38:40.77\00:38:46.50 We cannot believe that once you're saved, 00:38:46.53\00:38:48.93 you're always saved. 00:38:48.96\00:38:49.99 Jesus said, He who endures unto the end shall be saved. 00:38:50.02\00:38:55.01 And do you know what's interesting? 00:38:55.04\00:38:56.25 It's no coincidence that immediately after Israel 00:38:56.28\00:38:59.51 sang that song of their redemption in Exodus 15, 00:38:59.54\00:39:04.56 in Exodus 16 God rains bread from heaven. 00:39:04.59\00:39:08.37 And in Exodus 17 He gives water from the rock. 00:39:08.40\00:39:12.00 Because He knew that they were going to cross the desert. 00:39:12.03\00:39:15.66 and that even after their baptism they needed food, 00:39:15.69\00:39:18.97 and they needed water to conserve their strength 00:39:19.00\00:39:22.25 in order to make it to Canaan. 00:39:22.28\00:39:24.98 Notice Exodus 16:4. 00:39:25.01\00:39:29.44 It speaks about the bread that God rained from heaven. 00:39:29.47\00:39:32.56 God had some bakery in heaven! 00:39:32.59\00:39:34.09 He did this for forty years. 00:39:34.13\00:39:35.55 It's amazing! And it wasn't any old kind of bread, 00:39:35.59\00:39:39.49 and it tasted like wafers of honey the Bible says. Wow! 00:39:39.52\00:39:41.77 You know when God makes food, He makes it good. 00:39:41.80\00:39:45.37 Notice Exodus 16:4. 00:39:45.41\00:39:49.39 And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every 00:39:54.93\00:39:58.57 day, that I may test them whether they will 00:39:58.61\00:40:01.20 walk in My law or not. 00:40:01.24\00:40:03.34 So God rains bread because He knows that they need to eat 00:40:03.37\00:40:07.27 in order to make it to the land of Canaan. 00:40:07.30\00:40:09.50 But in Exodus 17 God also gave water from the rock. 00:40:09.54\00:40:13.48 Notice Exodus 17:6, Exodus 17:6. 00:40:13.51\00:40:20.18 And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. 00:40:32.23\00:40:37.63 So in Exodus 16 God gives bread. 00:40:37.66\00:40:40.29 In Exodus 17 God gives water. 00:40:40.33\00:40:42.89 Now folks, this bread and this water was not only literal bread 00:40:42.92\00:40:48.55 and literal water. 00:40:48.58\00:40:49.61 Once again God is trying to teach us a lesson on our trek 00:40:49.64\00:40:54.44 from the world to Canaan, to the heavenly Canaan. 00:40:54.47\00:40:58.06 Go with me to 1 Corinthians 10: 3, 4, and you're going to see 00:40:58.10\00:41:02.68 this spiritual dimension. 00:41:02.71\00:41:06.30 1 Corinthians 10:3, 4. 00:41:06.34\00:41:09.89 Actually, let's begin reading at verse 1 so we catch the context. 00:41:09.93\00:41:14.54 It says, moreover brethren, I do not want you to be unaware 00:41:14.57\00:41:17.83 that all our fathers were under the cloud. 00:41:17.86\00:41:20.01 All passed through the sea. 00:41:20.04\00:41:22.09 All were baptized into Moses, in the cloud and the sea. 00:41:22.12\00:41:26.23 And now notice: All ate the same physical food. 00:41:26.26\00:41:30.81 Thank you, thank you very much. 00:41:30.85\00:41:33.16 You're reading out there. Good! 00:41:33.19\00:41:34.37 For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, 00:41:44.57\00:41:49.40 and that Rock was Christ. 00:41:49.43\00:41:51.42 Did the manna represent something beyond 00:41:51.46\00:41:54.35 the literal manna? 00:41:54.38\00:41:55.41 Did the water represent something beyond 00:41:55.44\00:41:58.18 the literal water? Absolutely! 00:41:58.22\00:42:00.30 Now the question is, what did the manna represent, 00:42:00.33\00:42:03.24 and what did the water from the rock represent? 00:42:03.27\00:42:06.51 The fact is the Bible tells us. 00:42:06.54\00:42:09.08 Notice Deuteronomy 8:3, Deuteronomy 8:3. 00:42:09.11\00:42:15.10 What do we need to partake of in order to be strong 00:42:15.14\00:42:18.39 to make it to Canaan, to the heavenly Canaan? 00:42:18.42\00:42:20.45 What do we need to drink in order to make it sound 00:42:20.49\00:42:24.20 and safe to the land of Canaan? 00:42:24.24\00:42:26.62 Notice Deuteronomy 8:3. 00:42:26.66\00:42:29.82 Here God explains why He gave manna. 00:42:29.85\00:42:31.64 And now notice: 00:42:43.26\00:42:44.37 What did the manna represent? 00:42:57.95\00:42:59.45 The manna represents the word of God. 00:42:59.48\00:43:02.18 What must we assimilate in order to be strong to enter 00:43:02.21\00:43:06.55 the heavenly Canaan? the word of God. 00:43:06.58\00:43:09.31 And, by the way, Israel preferred junk food. Ha ha! 00:43:09.35\00:43:15.24 Does that have something to say to us? 00:43:15.27\00:43:17.52 Are there many Christians that prefer spiritual junk food? 00:43:17.55\00:43:21.91 And they died in the wilderness. 00:43:21.95\00:43:24.18 Now I want you to notice also what is meant by 00:43:24.22\00:43:29.42 the water from the rock. 00:43:29.45\00:43:31.65 Go with me to Deuteronomy 32:4, Deuteronomy 32:4. 00:43:31.68\00:43:38.79 You see, Israel should have understood that the manna 00:43:38.82\00:43:42.21 represented something spiritual. 00:43:42.25\00:43:44.68 They should have understood that the water represented 00:43:44.71\00:43:47.57 something spiritual. 00:43:47.61\00:43:48.64 You say, How do we know that? 00:43:48.67\00:43:49.80 Because it says so in Deuteronomy 8:3. 00:43:49.84\00:43:52.72 God gave them manna to teach them that they're to live 00:43:52.76\00:43:55.15 by the word of God. 00:43:55.19\00:43:56.22 Now what about the rock? 00:43:56.25\00:43:57.50 Should they have understood that the rock was not merely 00:43:57.53\00:44:00.28 a literal rock? Sure! 00:44:00.31\00:44:02.14 Notice Deuteronomy 32:4, speaking about the Lord, 00:44:02.17\00:44:07.21 about God: 00:44:07.24\00:44:08.27 Should they have understood that whatever came from the rock 00:44:12.09\00:44:15.89 came from God, who is the Rock? Yes. 00:44:15.93\00:44:18.40 And so you notice that God is the Rock. 00:44:31.49\00:44:34.28 The manna represents the Word of God. 00:44:34.32\00:44:37.04 Now allow me to say a few things about the rock. 00:44:37.07\00:44:39.60 There are three symbols related to this episode of the rock. 00:44:39.63\00:44:43.69 And, by the way, there are two episodes of the rock. 00:44:43.73\00:44:46.25 There's this one in Exodus 17, and there's another one 00:44:46.29\00:44:48.78 in Numbers 20:8-11. 00:44:48.82\00:44:51.59 I'm going to synthesize what is contained in those two episodes. 00:44:51.63\00:44:55.01 God told Moses to go and stand by the rock at Horeb. 00:44:55.04\00:44:59.74 This is in Exodus 17. 00:44:59.78\00:45:01.16 And He said, Raise your rod and you will strike the rock 00:45:01.20\00:45:07.02 with your rod, and the rock will give its waters. 00:45:07.05\00:45:11.24 Now we have three symbols here: the rock, which represents whom? 00:45:11.27\00:45:18.13 We read in Deuteronomy 32 that it's the Lord, 00:45:18.16\00:45:21.79 but in 1 Corinthians 10 it says the rock was whom? 00:45:21.83\00:45:24.73 The Rock was Christ. 00:45:24.76\00:45:26.10 So we know that any blessing that comes comes from whom? 00:45:26.13\00:45:29.25 from Christ. But now notice. 00:45:29.28\00:45:31.42 What does the rod represent? 00:45:31.45\00:45:32.96 Every time that Moses raises his rod a judgment falls 00:45:32.99\00:45:37.77 upon the Egyptians. 00:45:37.81\00:45:39.17 In other words, the rod represents 00:45:39.20\00:45:41.90 punishment or judgment. 00:45:41.93\00:45:43.30 Notice that the rod falls on the rock. 00:45:43.34\00:45:46.15 What does that mean? 00:45:46.18\00:45:47.21 That the judgment, or the punishment 00:45:47.24\00:45:50.01 of God, fell upon who? upon Christ. 00:45:50.05\00:45:52.80 It says in Isaiah 53 that we esteemed Him smitten, 00:45:52.83\00:46:00.41 stricken by God, and afflicted. 00:46:00.44\00:46:03.31 In other words, the rod of God's judgment fell upon Jesus. 00:46:03.35\00:46:06.75 And as a result, what is Jesus able to pour out upon us? 00:46:06.79\00:46:10.87 Jesus says, Whoever thirsts, let him come to Me, and what? 00:46:10.90\00:46:14.94 and drink. And do you know what the drink represents? 00:46:14.98\00:46:18.25 1 Corinthians 12:13 says, We have all been made 00:46:18.28\00:46:22.85 to drink of one spirit. 00:46:22.89\00:46:25.45 Now what do we have in all of this symbolism? 00:46:25.48\00:46:29.37 The rod represents God's judgment. 00:46:29.40\00:46:31.57 The rod of God's judgment falls upon the Rock, Jesus Christ. 00:46:31.61\00:46:35.58 And as a result, Jesus Christ is able to pour out His what? 00:46:35.61\00:46:39.55 to pour out His Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost 00:46:39.59\00:46:42.91 to bless our lives. 00:46:42.95\00:46:44.49 Now there's a second rock episode. 00:46:44.53\00:46:46.88 And in this rock episode God tells Moses to take his rod, 00:46:46.91\00:46:51.20 to go to the rock, and to do what? to speak to the rock. 00:46:51.23\00:46:57.62 And the rock would give it's what? it's waters. 00:46:57.66\00:47:01.40 Of course Moses struck the rock twice. 00:47:01.43\00:47:04.81 Why did Moses only need to speak to the rock 00:47:04.85\00:47:08.96 in this second episode? 00:47:08.99\00:47:10.47 Because Jesus was only going to fall under the 00:47:10.50\00:47:13.57 judgment of God once; under the rod of God's punishment once 00:47:13.60\00:47:18.11 for our sins, as it says in Hebrews. 00:47:18.14\00:47:20.75 And if we want to benefit by what He did, all we have to do 00:47:20.79\00:47:24.77 today is speak to the Rock. Amen! 00:47:24.81\00:47:28.34 All we have to do is pray to Jesus for His Holy Spirit. 00:47:28.37\00:47:31.85 And so what we have here is if we want to make it to the 00:47:31.89\00:47:35.33 heavenly Canaan, we need two very important elements 00:47:35.36\00:47:38.63 in our life: we need to assimilate the Word daily. 00:47:38.66\00:47:43.09 And in the second place, we need to pray to Jesus, talk to Him, 00:47:43.12\00:47:48.46 and speak to Him, so that we can receive, each day, a new portion 00:47:48.49\00:47:53.79 of the Holy Spirit. Amen! 00:47:53.83\00:47:56.73 Now let's talk a little bit about their journey to Sinai. 00:47:56.77\00:48:00.09 Do you know that when God took Israel out of Egypt, 00:48:00.13\00:48:03.68 instead of taking them north to Canaan, He took them 00:48:03.71\00:48:06.21 south to Mount Sinai? 00:48:06.24\00:48:08.38 And the reason why is because He wanted to reveal 00:48:08.41\00:48:11.86 to them His holy law. 00:48:11.89\00:48:13.76 Do you notice that God gave them the law after He delivered 00:48:13.79\00:48:18.21 them from bondage? 00:48:18.24\00:48:19.27 God didn't say, Here's My law. 00:48:19.30\00:48:20.98 Keep it, and I'll deliver you. 00:48:21.01\00:48:22.72 God delivers them because they cry out. 00:48:22.76\00:48:25.65 That's God's grace, unmerited favor. 00:48:25.68\00:48:28.07 And then He takes them to Sinai. 00:48:28.11\00:48:30.43 And He's saying, If you love Me, because of what I've done, 00:48:30.46\00:48:33.68 keep My commandments. 00:48:33.71\00:48:35.37 Notice Exodus 20, Exodus 20, and let's read verses 2 and 3. 00:48:35.41\00:48:42.20 Notice how the ten commandments begin. 00:48:42.24\00:48:44.00 You know some people, I'll ask them, 00:48:44.04\00:48:45.71 How do the ten commandments begin? 00:48:45.74\00:48:47.34 They say, Thou shall have no other God's before Me. 00:48:47.38\00:48:49.64 But the ten commandments have a prologue. 00:48:49.67\00:48:51.68 They have an introduction. 00:48:51.71\00:48:52.85 Notice Exodus 20:1, And God spoke all these words saying: 00:48:52.89\00:48:58.60 You shall have no other gods before Me. 00:49:04.90\00:49:08.97 What is the motivation for Israel keeping 00:49:09.00\00:49:13.04 God's commandments? 00:49:13.07\00:49:14.10 It is because God has what? God has delivered them 00:49:14.13\00:49:19.05 from bondage in Egypt. 00:49:19.09\00:49:20.89 Should that be our motivation for serving the Lord? 00:49:20.92\00:49:25.04 Because He has poured out His grace, and His mercy upon us 00:49:25.08\00:49:28.56 without us deserving it? simply because we cried out to God? 00:49:28.59\00:49:32.04 Now we say, O Lord Jesus, Thank You for delivering me 00:49:32.07\00:49:35.37 through Your blood. 00:49:35.40\00:49:36.43 Thank You for burying that old past in the waters of baptism. 00:49:36.46\00:49:39.45 Now I've been born into newness of life. 00:49:39.48\00:49:41.77 Oh Lord, I want to serve You, because I love You so much. 00:49:41.81\00:49:45.50 You see, we keep the law because we love Jesus, 00:49:45.54\00:49:48.84 because of what Jesus has done. 00:49:48.88\00:49:51.10 But listen up, Israel was buried alive. 00:49:51.13\00:49:56.65 Their old selves did not die in the waters. 00:49:59.53\00:50:04.63 You know, the problem with Israel is that they constantly 00:50:04.67\00:50:09.39 wanted to return to Egypt. 00:50:09.42\00:50:11.07 Have you noticed that? 00:50:11.10\00:50:12.67 By the way, are there Christians that constantly 00:50:12.71\00:50:15.06 want to return to Egypt? 00:50:15.09\00:50:18.82 Their past has been buried in the waters. 00:50:18.86\00:50:22.48 They've been delivered by the blood of the Lamb. 00:50:22.52\00:50:25.03 But they're always looking back. 00:50:25.06\00:50:26.26 They say, Oh what life was when I was in the world. 00:50:26.29\00:50:28.98 You see Israel wanted the diet of Egypt. 00:50:29.01\00:50:33.54 They wanted the lifestyle of Egypt. 00:50:33.57\00:50:37.13 They wanted the music of Egypt. 00:50:37.17\00:50:40.27 They wanted the entertainment of Egypt. 00:50:40.31\00:50:43.28 They wanted to worship the gods of Egypt. 00:50:43.32\00:50:46.22 And the amazing thing is, that because they had one foot 00:50:46.25\00:50:53.06 in the world, and they wanted one foot with the Lord, 00:50:53.09\00:50:55.48 none of that generation, except for those twenty years 00:50:55.52\00:51:00.14 and under, entered the land of Canaan. 00:51:00.17\00:51:03.48 Listen up folks! These were people who had been delivered 00:51:03.51\00:51:07.82 by the blood of the Lamb. 00:51:07.85\00:51:08.98 These were people who had been baptized in the 00:51:09.02\00:51:13.21 waters of the Red Sea. 00:51:13.24\00:51:14.45 These were people who began their pilgrimage correctly. 00:51:14.49\00:51:19.14 But they failed in the wilderness. 00:51:19.17\00:51:22.38 You see, they had the title to Canaan when they were delivered. 00:51:22.42\00:51:26.43 But God expected them also to have the fitness for Canaan. 00:51:26.46\00:51:32.17 But they were always complaining, 00:51:32.21\00:51:34.73 and they were always murmuring. 00:51:34.76\00:51:37.22 And therefore they fell in the wilderness. 00:51:37.25\00:51:39.72 Notice what we find in the book of Hebrews 3:16-19, 00:51:39.75\00:51:45.63 Hebrews 3:16-19. Here we find the apostle Paul, 00:51:45.67\00:51:51.59 whom I believe to be author of the book of Hebrews, 00:51:51.62\00:51:54.06 well not the author, the writer. 00:51:54.09\00:51:55.33 The author is God. 00:51:55.37\00:51:56.40 But in Hebrews 3:16-19, we have an explanation of what happened 00:51:56.43\00:52:02.58 to Israel in the wilderness. It says here: 00:52:02.61\00:52:05.45 What's our situation? 00:52:45.18\00:52:47.72 Are we murmuring? Are we complaining? 00:52:47.76\00:52:50.96 Are we looking back at the world, 00:52:51.00\00:52:54.13 the dress of the world, the entertainment of the world, 00:52:54.17\00:52:56.54 the food of the world, the music of the world, 00:52:56.57\00:52:58.87 the lifestyle that we had in the world; and as a result 00:52:58.90\00:53:03.40 fall in the wilderness because of our unbelief? 00:53:03.43\00:53:06.35 Because of our disobedience, as it says here? 00:53:06.38\00:53:09.26 Because of our rebellion? 00:53:09.30\00:53:10.60 You know, the Spirit of Prophecy says that God is not to blame 00:53:10.63\00:53:14.88 for us not having entered the land of Canaan yet. 00:53:14.91\00:53:18.09 She says it is because of the sin of insubordination. 00:53:18.13\00:53:21.27 It's because we have not met the conditions. 00:53:21.31\00:53:24.70 It is because we have not appreciated what 00:53:24.73\00:53:28.09 God has done for us. 00:53:28.12\00:53:29.70 A good beginning does not guarantee entrance 00:53:29.74\00:53:34.79 into the heavenly Canaan. 00:53:34.83\00:53:36.86 We must have both the title and the fitness. 00:53:36.89\00:53:41.34 I'd like to read a statement that we find in the book, 00:53:41.38\00:53:44.48 The Faith I Live By, page 116. 00:53:44.51\00:53:48.05 This is a classical statement by Ellen White. 00:53:48.08\00:53:50.87 And it's a wonderful statement because succinctly she explains 00:53:50.90\00:53:54.49 the relationship between sanctification 00:53:54.53\00:53:56.26 and justification. 00:53:56.30\00:53:57.33 She says this: The righteousness by which we are 00:53:57.36\00:54:00.96 justified is imputed. 00:54:00.99\00:54:02.84 The righteousness by we are sanctified is imparted. 00:54:02.87\00:54:09.42 The first is our title to heaven, 00:54:09.46\00:54:14.34 the second is our fitness for heaven. 00:54:14.38\00:54:19.20 Folks, God is not going to take anyone to heaven who does not 00:54:19.23\00:54:23.17 have the title and the fitness. 00:54:23.20\00:54:26.08 There's a lot of debate about what happened at 00:54:26.11\00:54:28.33 Minneapolis in 1888. 00:54:28.37\00:54:30.01 I'll tell you, Ellen White has a statement where it's very 00:54:30.04\00:54:32.94 succinct, and very simple. 00:54:32.98\00:54:34.40 She says that Jones and Waggoner taught the righteousness 00:54:34.43\00:54:37.97 of Christ, which is manifested in obedience to all of 00:54:38.00\00:54:41.50 the commandments of God. 00:54:41.53\00:54:42.56 There it is! You know you can debate, and you can argue, 00:54:42.59\00:54:46.04 but that is the essence of the message that Ellen White, 00:54:46.08\00:54:49.58 and Jones, and Waggoner, gave in 1888; 00:54:49.61\00:54:52.33 was that the righteousness of Christ, received in the life, 00:54:52.36\00:54:56.64 imputed to us, is manifested by obedience to all of the 00:54:56.67\00:55:00.91 commandments of God. 00:55:00.94\00:55:02.27 I'd like to end our study today by going to the book of 00:55:02.31\00:55:06.98 Romans 6, Romans 6:22, 23, Romans 6:22, 23. 00:55:07.01\00:55:15.91 And I want you to notice the stages here. 00:55:15.94\00:55:17.89 There are four key ideas, particularly in verse 22. 00:55:17.93\00:55:22.66 It says here in verse 22: 00:55:22.69\00:55:25.35 Is that what happened to Israel when they were 00:55:30.50\00:55:34.01 redeemed from Egypt? 00:55:34.04\00:55:35.07 Were they set free from bondage? Yes, notice: 00:55:35.10\00:55:37.43 Did Israel now become slaves of God, servants of God? 00:55:43.61\00:55:46.17 Yes, they did. Absolutely! 00:55:46.21\00:55:48.29 Now notice what it continues saying. 00:55:48.33\00:55:50.65 What is the fruit when you've been freed from your first 00:55:54.88\00:55:57.79 slave master, from the slave master, and you become 00:55:57.82\00:56:00.83 a slave of God, voluntary slave of God? 00:56:00.86\00:56:03.34 What comes as a result? holiness. 00:56:03.38\00:56:06.82 And then notice: at the end what? everlasting life. 00:56:11.98\00:56:17.05 And, by the way, that's Canaan. 00:56:17.08\00:56:18.78 In this verse you have everything that we've talked 00:56:18.81\00:56:22.54 about this morning: deliverance from bondage, 00:56:22.57\00:56:26.09 becoming slaves of God, producing fruit unto holiness, 00:56:26.12\00:56:32.67 and eventually entering the heavenly land of Canaan. 00:56:32.70\00:56:38.29 Folks, by what's happening in the world, I have no doubts 00:56:38.32\00:56:42.28 that we are at the very doors of Canaan. 00:56:42.31\00:56:45.80 It's amazing what we've been seeing in the news. 00:56:45.84\00:56:49.11 But what we need to do is realize that we who have been 00:56:49.15\00:56:53.17 baptized, we who have accepted the blood of Jesus, 00:56:53.20\00:56:56.93 we need to feed on the word. 00:56:56.96\00:56:59.36 We need to learn to pray fervently to Jesus. 00:56:59.39\00:57:03.77 We need to hang in there. 00:57:03.81\00:57:05.63 We need to obey God's commandments, not because 00:57:05.67\00:57:08.44 we have to, but because we love God. 00:57:08.48\00:57:10.29 Because of what God has done for us. 00:57:10.32\00:57:12.06 And in this way, not only have the title, 00:57:12.10\00:57:15.22 but the fitness for heaven. 00:57:15.25\00:57:17.87 And may it happen very soon. 00:57:17.90\00:57:20.45 Let us pray. Father in heaven, we thank You for the marvelous 00:57:20.49\00:57:24.97 way in which You have revealed Your plan of salvation in the 00:57:25.01\00:57:29.46 journey of Israel from Egypt to Canaan. 00:57:29.49\00:57:32.42 Father we thank You because You delivered us from bondage. 00:57:32.46\00:57:36.13 We thank you because now we can be Your slaves, 00:57:36.17\00:57:39.35 and You're a loving Master. 00:57:39.39\00:57:41.17 Father we ask that You will help us to appreciate 00:57:41.21\00:57:44.35 what You have done for us. 00:57:44.38\00:57:45.56 Reveal Your love to us each day so that our hearts might be 00:57:45.59\00:57:49.88 filled with love for You, and we might obey you; 00:57:49.92\00:57:53.13 not because we have to, not as an obligation, 00:57:53.16\00:57:56.27 but because we love You. 00:57:56.30\00:57:57.66 Father, we want to spend eternity with You 00:57:57.69\00:58:01.57 in the heavenly Canaan. 00:58:01.61\00:58:03.03 And so we ask that You will prepare a place for us. 00:58:03.07\00:58:06.41 We thank You Lord for hearing our prayer for we ask it 00:58:06.45\00:58:09.75 in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:58:09.79\00:58:12.43
