Have you been blessed 00:01:28.66\00:01:30.61 to be here at this camp meeting? Yes. 00:01:30.62\00:01:32.85 I can tell you this is an absolutely 00:01:32.86\00:01:35.28 wonderful camp meeting, amen. Amen. 00:01:35.29\00:01:37.75 I tell you most of the camp meetings 00:01:37.76\00:01:39.23 that we go to are a weekend and then a week 00:01:39.24\00:01:42.34 and then a weekend. 00:01:42.35\00:01:43.84 But I have received as much spiritual blessing 00:01:43.85\00:01:47.34 here in two and a half days, 00:01:47.35\00:01:50.16 that I normally get as much as I normally 00:01:50.17\00:01:52.73 get in those ten day camp meetings, amen, 00:01:52.74\00:01:55.62 I mean the testimonies have thrilled my soul. 00:01:55.63\00:01:58.52 The music has been absolutely exquisite 00:01:58.53\00:02:01.98 to the glory of the God, amen? Amen. 00:02:01.99\00:02:04.72 Oh, I tell you, our message tonight is an important message. 00:02:04.73\00:02:08.50 Last night we had a message of encouragement, 00:02:08.51\00:02:10.97 the message of inspiration. 00:02:10.98\00:02:12.93 And we learned that we must first reside in Christ 00:02:12.94\00:02:16.88 before we continue to abide in Christ, amen. 00:02:16.89\00:02:19.83 Amen. It is an exercise in futility 00:02:19.84\00:02:23.44 to seek to continue to abide in Christ, 00:02:23.45\00:02:26.35 if we don't have that living confidence 00:02:26.36\00:02:28.16 that we presently reside in Him. 00:02:28.17\00:02:30.38 Last night was a message of encouragement. 00:02:30.39\00:02:33.38 Last night was a message of inspiration. 00:02:33.39\00:02:35.52 Tonight's message will also be encouraging by the grace of God 00:02:35.53\00:02:39.58 it will also be inspiring. 00:02:39.59\00:02:41.04 But tonight's message will also be challenging. 00:02:41.05\00:02:44.58 We need to hear challenging 00:02:44.59\00:02:45.77 messages sometimes, don't we? 00:02:45.78\00:02:48.39 Our message this evening is entitled 00:02:48.40\00:02:50.77 "To be or not to be shaken". 00:02:50.78\00:02:55.56 "To be or not to be shaken." 00:02:55.57\00:02:59.81 Let us begin with prayer. 00:02:59.82\00:03:06.69 Father in Heaven, tonight we say with the Apostle Paul, 00:03:06.70\00:03:11.60 God forbid that I should glory in anything, 00:03:11.61\00:03:16.06 save the cross of Jesus Christ. 00:03:16.07\00:03:19.43 And Father it is that cross, 00:03:19.44\00:03:21.42 that cross alone that recommends us to you. 00:03:21.43\00:03:25.46 And Father tonight as we study this important topic 00:03:25.47\00:03:29.12 from the Book of Hebrews "To be or not to be shaken." 00:03:29.13\00:03:34.07 As the rain is beginning to fall, Lord 00:03:34.08\00:03:36.36 we've been singing that all weekend, 00:03:36.37\00:03:37.75 it's beginning to rain. 00:03:37.76\00:03:39.50 Help us to remember that it began to rain 00:03:39.51\00:03:43.18 in the days of Noah. 00:03:43.19\00:03:45.35 And that rain was good news for Noah and his family, 00:03:45.36\00:03:48.55 but very bad news for others. 00:03:48.56\00:03:52.28 And Father as shaking is coming. 00:03:52.29\00:03:54.96 The time of trouble and adversity of time of trouble 00:03:54.97\00:03:58.64 such as never was since there was a nation 00:03:58.65\00:04:01.45 says the Prophet Daniel. 00:04:01.46\00:04:03.56 And Father we want to be ready to stand in that time. 00:04:03.57\00:04:08.55 Father we want to be clinking 00:04:08.56\00:04:10.38 to the great cross of Christ to that anchor of the soul. 00:04:10.39\00:04:15.04 Be with us now, as we open your word, 00:04:15.05\00:04:19.66 may you open our hearts, for we ask it in Jesus name. 00:04:19.67\00:04:23.53 Let all the saints of the living God say, amen. 00:04:23.54\00:04:26.61 Amen. Let's open our Bible to the Book of Hebrews. 00:04:26.62\00:04:29.11 What book everyone? Hebrews. 00:04:29.12\00:04:30.80 Now is that in the Old Testament or the New Testament? 00:04:30.81\00:04:32.84 New. Good, Hebrews. 00:04:32.85\00:04:36.30 Now the author of Hebrews does not declare who he is. 00:04:41.77\00:04:48.70 Christian tradition has a sign the authorship of this book 00:04:48.71\00:04:52.91 to the Apostle Paul, as a general consensus. 00:04:52.92\00:04:56.61 Ellen White makes it very clear the Apostle Paul 00:04:56.62\00:04:59.07 was the author of Hebrews and that's good enough for me. 00:04:59.08\00:05:02.55 Independent of who the author of Hebrews was, 00:05:02.56\00:05:05.37 you can be sure of one thing 00:05:05.38\00:05:07.22 as you read the Book of Hebrews through, 00:05:07.23\00:05:09.75 it is one of the most well thought, 00:05:09.76\00:05:12.27 one of the most chronological, 00:05:12.28\00:05:14.78 linear and well articulated epistles 00:05:14.79\00:05:17.62 in the entire New Testament. 00:05:17.63\00:05:19.38 In fact many theologians consider the Book of Hebrews 00:05:19.39\00:05:22.06 to see to be the single most organized, 00:05:22.07\00:05:25.68 the single most systematic book in the entire New Testament, 00:05:25.69\00:05:29.69 if not the entire Bible. 00:05:29.70\00:05:30.92 It is a very, very well organized book. 00:05:30.93\00:05:34.36 Something else that will strike you as you read Hebrews 1, 00:05:34.37\00:05:37.35 all the way up to chapter 13 is that the author 00:05:37.36\00:05:40.29 of this epistle whoever it is, the author 00:05:40.30\00:05:43.56 of this epistle is deeply concerned. 00:05:43.57\00:05:47.87 He is deeply--what did I say everyone? 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.99 Deeply concern, we have this reverberating bottom-line 00:05:50.00\00:05:53.85 that saturates the entire Book of Hebrews, 00:05:53.86\00:05:56.72 there is a deep concern here. 00:05:56.73\00:06:00.25 And tonight we're going to discuss 00:06:00.26\00:06:01.70 what was the nature of that concern. 00:06:01.71\00:06:05.35 And what lessons can we draw from that concern. 00:06:05.36\00:06:08.58 What salient conclusions can we draw living 00:06:08.59\00:06:12.41 today in the year 2004 as the latter rain begins to fall? 00:06:12.42\00:06:17.80 Let's begin in Hebrews Chapter 1. 00:06:17.81\00:06:21.13 The author of Hebrews 00:06:21.14\00:06:22.22 begins with the most rudimentary truth 00:06:22.23\00:06:24.67 of all, the most basic truth and that is that God has spoken. 00:06:24.68\00:06:30.41 That God has--what did I say everyone? 00:06:30.42\00:06:32.07 God has spoken. 00:06:32.08\00:06:33.27 I'm in Hebrews 1:1 "God who had various times 00:06:33.28\00:06:36.38 and in various ways, spoke in time passed 00:06:36.39\00:06:39.54 of the fathers by the prophets, 00:06:39.55\00:06:41.85 has in these last days spoken to us by his what, everyone? 00:06:41.86\00:06:45.75 By his Son, whom He as appointed the heir of all things 00:06:45.76\00:06:48.11 through whom also He made the worlds. 00:06:48.12\00:06:50.08 Who being the brightness of His glory 00:06:50.09\00:06:52.69 and the express image of his person and upholding 00:06:52.70\00:06:55.91 all things by the word of His power, 00:06:55.92\00:06:58.37 when He had by himself perched our sins 00:06:58.38\00:07:01.75 sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high. 00:07:01.76\00:07:06.34 Can someone say, amen? Amen. 00:07:06.35\00:07:08.65 The first three verses here of Hebrews. 00:07:08.66\00:07:10.46 The author of Hebrews begins with the most basic, 00:07:10.47\00:07:12.73 the most rudimentary truth in the Christian religion 00:07:12.74\00:07:15.81 and that is that God has spoken, 00:07:15.82\00:07:19.05 God has revealed Himself 00:07:19.06\00:07:21.09 in the old dispensation if you will. 00:07:21.10\00:07:23.52 God spoke through His prophets, through his what everyone? 00:07:23.53\00:07:26.25 Through his prophets. 00:07:26.26\00:07:27.54 But in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son, 00:07:27.55\00:07:31.21 whom he has appointed the heir of all things. 00:07:31.22\00:07:34.21 The author of Hebrews begins very simply. 00:07:34.22\00:07:36.93 He wants us to understand that God 00:07:36.94\00:07:39.15 has spoken and then he moves from there. 00:07:39.16\00:07:42.09 He moves from this most rudimentary, 00:07:42.10\00:07:44.30 this most basic foundational, elementary truth 00:07:44.31\00:07:47.71 to a series of very strident, 00:07:47.72\00:07:51.70 to a series of very concerned exhortations. 00:07:51.71\00:07:56.11 Now I want to show you these exhortations, 00:07:56.12\00:07:57.93 we go right to Hebrews Chapter 2. 00:07:57.94\00:08:00.09 Hebrews Chapter 2 beginning in verse 1, what verse everyone? 00:08:00.10\00:08:04.22 Hebrews 2:1. The author of Hebrews says, 00:08:04.23\00:08:08.42 "Therefore we must give the more earnest heed 00:08:08.43\00:08:12.31 to the things we have heard, lest" be what? 00:08:12.32\00:08:16.74 "Lest we drift away." 00:08:16.75\00:08:18.15 Notice the next verse. 00:08:18.16\00:08:19.75 "For if the word spoken through angels proved stedfast, 00:08:19.76\00:08:23.58 and every transgression and disobedience 00:08:23.59\00:08:25.78 received a just reward. 00:08:25.79\00:08:27.22 How shall we escape, if we neglect so greater salvation, 00:08:27.23\00:08:31.02 which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, 00:08:31.03\00:08:33.61 and was confirmed to us by those who heard him. 00:08:33.62\00:08:37.03 Let's just spend a moment here. 00:08:37.04\00:08:39.48 Notice there in verse 1, the author of Hebrews says, 00:08:39.49\00:08:42.04 that we must give earnest heed 00:08:42.05\00:08:45.10 to the things that we've heard and it's concern 00:08:45.11\00:08:47.53 here is that if we're not paying earnest heed here, 00:08:47.54\00:08:49.86 if we're not paying diligent attention here, 00:08:49.87\00:08:52.72 we might drift away. 00:08:52.73\00:08:54.77 We might, what everyone? 00:08:54.78\00:08:56.43 Now I want you to notice the language there. 00:08:56.44\00:08:58.11 He doesn't say we might runaway. 00:08:58.12\00:09:00.98 He doesn't say that we might scurry away 00:09:00.99\00:09:03.41 or that we might choose to move away quickly. 00:09:03.42\00:09:05.57 He says that we might drift away. 00:09:05.58\00:09:08.43 Then he says something absolutely 00:09:08.44\00:09:09.78 remarkable in verse 3, notice that. 00:09:09.79\00:09:11.86 How shall we escape if we reject so great salvation? 00:09:11.87\00:09:19.15 Is that what the Bible says? 00:09:19.16\00:09:21.32 The Bible says, how then shall we escape 00:09:21.33\00:09:23.02 if we neglect our greatest salvation. 00:09:23.03\00:09:25.93 Now is there a difference between reject and neglect, 00:09:25.94\00:09:29.26 are those different words, yes or no? Yes. 00:09:29.27\00:09:31.53 Sure? The word reject is active. 00:09:31.54\00:09:35.28 The word reject means that you have made up your mind. 00:09:35.29\00:09:38.25 You have made the volitional decision 00:09:38.26\00:09:40.70 that you're going to go against something. 00:09:40.71\00:09:42.92 You're rejecting it. 00:09:42.93\00:09:44.30 You're taking an active position over 00:09:44.31\00:09:46.59 and against another position. 00:09:46.60\00:09:49.60 The author of Hebrews does not say, how shall we escape 00:09:49.61\00:09:52.16 if we reject so greater salvation. 00:09:52.17\00:09:55.35 He says, how shall we escape if we neglect. 00:09:55.36\00:10:01.30 Now tell me about the word neglect. 00:10:01.31\00:10:03.21 What does that word mean? 00:10:03.22\00:10:05.35 Oh that's good, to ignore. 00:10:05.36\00:10:07.29 To not pay proper attention to. 00:10:07.30\00:10:09.69 Now notice the use of these two phrases here. 00:10:09.70\00:10:12.51 In verse 1 he says, I'm concerned 00:10:12.52\00:10:14.25 that we might drift away, not run away, but drift away slowly. 00:10:14.26\00:10:20.68 In verse 3 he says, I'm concerned that we might neglect 00:10:20.69\00:10:23.78 this great salvation that has been preached to us. 00:10:23.79\00:10:27.10 This is the first of several exhortations 00:10:27.11\00:10:30.27 where the author of Hebrews is deadly concerned. 00:10:30.28\00:10:32.89 He is deeply concerned that something is transpiring 00:10:32.90\00:10:37.06 in the congregation to whom he is writing. 00:10:37.07\00:10:40.63 Notice this second exhortation verse--Chapter 3, Hebrews 3:7. 00:10:40.64\00:10:47.48 Hebrews 3:7. The author of Hebrews says, 00:10:47.49\00:10:54.50 therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, 00:10:54.51\00:10:56.70 "Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your what? 00:10:56.71\00:11:04.68 Do not harden your hearts 00:11:04.69\00:11:06.71 as in the rebellion in the day of trial in the wilderness". 00:11:06.72\00:11:10.05 Notice what he is saying, 00:11:10.06\00:11:11.24 today do not harden your hearts as the Israelites 00:11:11.25\00:11:15.12 did in the time of temptation and in the time of rebellion. 00:11:15.13\00:11:17.87 Notice now, skip down to verse 12 of the same chapter. 00:11:17.88\00:11:20.78 "Beware brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart 00:11:20.79\00:11:26.05 of unbelief, in departing from the living God." 00:11:26.06\00:11:31.45 In what everyone? 00:11:31.46\00:11:33.56 In departing from the living God, 00:11:33.57\00:11:35.41 that means to go away from the living God. 00:11:35.42\00:11:38.36 He says, beware, and the word beware is the contraction, 00:11:38.37\00:11:41.54 a conjunction of two words, 'be aware'. 00:11:41.55\00:11:46.61 Apparently there is a legitimate danger here, be careful. 00:11:46.62\00:11:52.40 Be careful that an evil heart 00:11:52.41\00:11:54.15 of unbelief does not cause you to depart from the living God. 00:11:54.16\00:11:59.43 Don't harden your hearts as in the rebellion, verse 13. 00:11:59.44\00:12:04.22 "But exhort one another daily, while it is called to day, 00:12:04.23\00:12:08.00 lest any of you be hardened," there it is again, 00:12:08.01\00:12:11.31 "through the deceitfulness" of what? "sin." 00:12:11.32\00:12:16.24 Verse 14, "For we have become partakers of Christ," 00:12:16.25\00:12:19.75 if we have become partakers of Christ 00:12:19.76\00:12:23.50 if we hold the beginning of our confidence 00:12:23.51\00:12:27.22 steadfast to what everyone? 00:12:27.23\00:12:30.23 "To the end." Now you're beginning to see 00:12:30.24\00:12:31.62 a pattern here if you're paying attention. 00:12:31.63\00:12:34.07 We've looked at just two of these exhortations 00:12:34.08\00:12:36.12 the first says, be careful that you don' t drift away, 00:12:36.13\00:12:39.48 be careful that you don't neglect so greater salvation, 00:12:39.49\00:12:42.40 be careful that you don't depart from the living God 00:12:42.41\00:12:44.90 and then he says, we need to hold 00:12:44.91\00:12:46.88 the beginning of our faith steadfast right to the very end. 00:12:46.89\00:12:50.90 The author of Hebrews is deeply concerned. 00:12:50.91\00:12:53.31 He is deadly concerned that people are drifting away 00:12:53.32\00:12:56.95 from what they once believed. 00:12:56.96\00:13:01.32 But let us note that the exhortations continue. 00:13:01.33\00:13:04.69 We're in Hebrew Chapter 4 now, Hebrews 4:14, 00:13:04.70\00:13:10.54 Hebrews 4:14, a familiar passage. 00:13:10.55\00:13:16.27 "Seeing then that we have a great high priest 00:13:16.28\00:13:18.61 who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, 00:13:18.62\00:13:21.84 the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession." 00:13:21.85\00:13:28.57 Let us hold what everyone? 00:13:28.58\00:13:30.95 Let us hold fast our confession. 00:13:30.96\00:13:32.60 What does He mean by that? 00:13:32.61\00:13:33.61 What he means is, let's stick to what we believe. 00:13:33.62\00:13:38.31 Let's hold fast to our confession. 00:13:38.32\00:13:42.44 Hebrews Chapter 6. Hebrews 6:4. 00:13:42.45\00:13:49.10 The language here is so strong in Hebrews Chapter 6, 00:13:49.11\00:13:53.23 so as to almost defy belief. 00:13:53.24\00:13:56.60 Notice the strength, the austerity of these words. 00:13:56.61\00:14:00.88 Hebrews 6:4. You can be confident 00:14:00.89\00:14:03.94 as you read this passage, that the author of Hebrews 00:14:03.95\00:14:06.63 is deeply concerned. 00:14:06.64\00:14:07.93 He is deadly serious about this issue. 00:14:07.94\00:14:10.90 Hebrews 6:4. "For it is impossible 00:14:10.91\00:14:14.82 for those who were once enlightened, 00:14:14.83\00:14:17.57 and have tasted the heavenly gift, 00:14:17.58\00:14:19.68 and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit. 00:14:19.69\00:14:22.17 And have tasted the good word of God, 00:14:22.18\00:14:24.50 and the powers of the age to come, 00:14:24.51\00:14:26.51 if they fall away. 00:14:26.52\00:14:29.24 If they what everyone? 00:14:29.25\00:14:31.17 "If they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, 00:14:31.18\00:14:35.30 since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, 00:14:35.31\00:14:38.49 and put him to an open shame." 00:14:38.50\00:14:42.67 Now friends, is that strong language, 00:14:42.68\00:14:44.02 yes or no? Yes. 00:14:44.03\00:14:45.73 Now listen, I've to two little boys, 00:14:45.74\00:14:47.12 and I love those little boys very much, very, very much. 00:14:47.13\00:14:49.89 I have little Landen, 00:14:49.90\00:14:51.00 he is three years old just a bundle of energy, 00:14:51.01\00:14:54.04 I don't where he gets it from, it's amazing. 00:14:54.05\00:14:58.63 And then my younger son is 18 months, 00:14:58.64\00:15:00.96 they're just 18 months apart 00:15:00.97\00:15:02.16 and I tell you that did not go very well 00:15:02.17\00:15:03.77 in the Asscherick home. 00:15:03.78\00:15:06.49 Well, my wife learned she was pregnant 00:15:06.50\00:15:08.08 and that our children are only going to be 18 months apart, 00:15:08.09\00:15:10.92 I was like amen and she cried all day. 00:15:10.93\00:15:15.88 Now these two little boys are bundles of energy 00:15:15.89\00:15:18.04 and they're always running here and running 00:15:18.05\00:15:19.94 there and just utterly exhausting my wife. 00:15:19.95\00:15:22.42 Now as a general rule when I speak to my children 00:15:22.43\00:15:25.69 I speak very kindly to them and very sweetly 00:15:25.70\00:15:27.98 to them and I rough house with them 00:15:27.99\00:15:29.44 and I play with them etcetera, etcetera. 00:15:29.45\00:15:31.48 But there are times when it is appropriate for me to speak 00:15:31.49\00:15:35.01 very strongly to my children. 00:15:35.02\00:15:38.01 Is that true, yes or no? 00:15:38.02\00:15:39.57 Even at the age of three, I'll give you a very good example. 00:15:39.58\00:15:41.87 A couple of days ago my son thought it would be a good idea 00:15:41.88\00:15:44.55 to see if his tongue would fit into an electrical socket. 00:15:44.56\00:15:49.61 I say, let's not see if it fits. 00:15:49.62\00:15:53.20 That's a good time where, you know, it's not probably 00:15:53.21\00:15:55.82 the best time to say, you know, Landen, 00:15:55.83\00:15:59.92 sweetie come here, no, no, no, no. 00:15:59.93\00:16:03.76 That's the time when, you know, all--its chaos, 00:16:03.77\00:16:07.45 I say, what do you think you're doing, boy? 00:16:07.46\00:16:10.06 Get over here, you know, I have to talk 00:16:10.07\00:16:11.63 strongly to him and he just the fear of God in size. 00:16:11.64\00:16:18.23 Friends, you read these verses here in Hebrews Chapter 6, 00:16:18.24\00:16:21.00 the author of Hebrews is saying, 00:16:21.01\00:16:22.51 what do you think you're doing? 00:16:22.52\00:16:26.84 It's impossible he says. 00:16:26.85\00:16:30.13 If you've tasted of the goodness of God, 00:16:30.14\00:16:31.81 even enlighten by the Holy Spirit. 00:16:31.82\00:16:33.47 If you fall away he says, 00:16:33.48\00:16:35.11 how are we going to renew you to repentance, 00:16:35.12\00:16:37.39 you're crucifying the Son of God, afresh. 00:16:37.40\00:16:44.91 Very concerned. 00:16:44.92\00:16:47.36 The epistle of Hebrews is not a casual epistle. 00:16:47.37\00:16:51.51 It's not a nice letter. 00:16:51.52\00:16:54.94 It is a very well calculated, a very well thought, 00:16:54.95\00:16:59.57 a very well articulated letter 00:16:59.58\00:17:01.28 that is saturated with deep even desperate concern. 00:17:01.29\00:17:06.60 Let us continue to unfold this. 00:17:06.61\00:17:08.48 Hebrews Chapter 6:11. "And we desire that each one of you show 00:17:08.49\00:17:13.19 the same diligence to the full assurance of hope 00:17:13.20\00:17:17.52 until the" what everyone? End. 00:17:17.53\00:17:19.73 "Till the end." Hang in there is what he is saying. Verse 12. 00:17:19.74\00:17:22.61 "That you do not become, my version says, sluggish." 00:17:22.62\00:17:27.35 What does your version say? Sluggish. 00:17:27.36\00:17:29.86 Sluggish, slothful, lazy. 00:17:29.87\00:17:33.16 I'm concerned he says, that you're becoming sluggish, 00:17:33.17\00:17:36.11 that you're becoming slothful, 00:17:36.12\00:17:37.40 that you're becoming lackadaisical. 00:17:37.41\00:17:40.55 That you do not become sluggish but imitate 00:17:40.56\00:17:43.28 those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. 00:17:43.29\00:17:48.16 Are you beginning to see a pattern here, yes or no? 00:17:48.17\00:17:52.03 You cannot miss the pattern. 00:17:52.04\00:17:53.42 He says, do not drift away. 00:17:53.43\00:17:54.77 Do not neglect the salvation. 00:17:54.78\00:17:56.34 Do not harden your hearts. 00:17:56.35\00:17:57.57 Do not become rebellious. 00:17:57.58\00:17:59.01 Do not depart from the living God. 00:17:59.02\00:18:00.65 Hold fast to the end. Hold fast our confession. 00:18:00.66\00:18:02.97 Don't fall away. Hold with diligence. 00:18:02.98\00:18:05.03 Hope to the end. Do not become sluggish. 00:18:05.04\00:18:06.83 He is saying, hang in there. Amen. 00:18:06.84\00:18:12.60 And now our final exhortation, 00:18:12.61\00:18:14.23 Hebrews Chapter 10:23. Hebrews Chapter 10:23. 00:18:14.24\00:18:18.91 By the way others could be sited. 00:18:18.92\00:18:21.39 This is just a sampling 00:18:21.40\00:18:23.14 of the many exhortations found in Hebrews. 00:18:23.15\00:18:25.12 Hebrews Chapter 10:23, what verse everyone? 00:18:25.13\00:18:29.07 23, "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope. 00:18:29.08\00:18:34.31 That language has come up three times now. 00:18:34.32\00:18:36.61 Let us hold fast, let us hold fast, 00:18:36.62\00:18:39.00 let us hold fast, verse 23, 00:18:39.01\00:18:40.96 "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope 00:18:40.97\00:18:43.32 without what is the next word? 00:18:43.33\00:18:45.78 Without wavering. 00:18:45.79\00:18:47.51 Now you tell me what is the root word of waver? 00:18:47.52\00:18:51.24 Its wave, that exactly right. It's a wave. 00:18:51.25\00:18:55.18 Now friends, think about waves, waves have no stability. 00:18:55.19\00:18:59.45 One day the wind blows to the south and another day 00:18:59.46\00:19:02.20 the wind blows to the north, 00:19:02.21\00:19:03.36 one day it blows to the east, another to the west. 00:19:03.37\00:19:05.33 He says, you're going to be wavering. 00:19:05.34\00:19:08.07 His concern was about wavering, departing, neglecting, etcetera. 00:19:08.08\00:19:13.27 Let us hold fast the confession of our faith 00:19:13.28\00:19:16.01 without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 00:19:16.02\00:19:21.55 Can you say, amen? Amen. 00:19:21.56\00:19:23.65 Now why are all these exhortations? 00:19:23.66\00:19:25.17 Why all of the concern? 00:19:25.18\00:19:26.65 What's doing on here? 00:19:26.66\00:19:29.19 I think we have establish beyond any reasonable doubt 00:19:29.20\00:19:32.81 that the author of Hebrews sat down to write this epistle, 00:19:32.82\00:19:36.31 because he was deeply concerned 00:19:36.32\00:19:38.56 that the people to whom he was writing Jewish Christians 00:19:38.57\00:19:41.47 were beginning to slide back and to slide away 00:19:41.48\00:19:45.30 from what they formally had believed. 00:19:45.31\00:19:46.75 Are you comfortable with that, yes or no? 00:19:46.76\00:19:48.74 Is that a safe conclusion, yes or no? Yes. 00:19:48.75\00:19:51.05 Okay, now why? 00:19:51.06\00:19:53.65 What's the concern? 00:19:53.66\00:19:56.17 These warnings, these rebukes 00:19:56.18\00:20:00.27 and exhortations were calculated to halt 00:20:00.28\00:20:03.68 and obvious back sliding among God's people. 00:20:03.69\00:20:09.06 Something was happening. 00:20:09.07\00:20:11.42 Something dangerous amongst the Jewish Christians 00:20:11.43\00:20:14.79 of the first century, what was it? 00:20:14.80\00:20:19.79 Now in order to answer this question 00:20:19.80\00:20:21.21 we have to understand the thrust of the Book of Hebrews, okay. 00:20:21.22\00:20:25.21 The Book of Hebrews is an exercise in comparisons. 00:20:25.22\00:20:30.68 And what did I say everyone? 00:20:30.69\00:20:32.59 In comparisons, that's the entire Book of Hebrews. 00:20:32.60\00:20:36.68 It's a study in comparisons and that comparison is two-tiered. 00:20:36.69\00:20:43.34 This comparison divides everything into two categories. 00:20:43.35\00:20:47.69 How many categories, everyone? 00:20:47.70\00:20:49.10 Two categories. 00:20:49.11\00:20:50.15 On this side we have the old and on this side 00:20:50.16\00:20:54.07 we have the--guess what? 00:20:54.08\00:20:55.62 The new. And as you read the Book of Hebrews 00:20:55.63\00:20:57.94 you find the author of the Hebrews 00:20:57.95\00:21:00.00 saying in the old dispensation, they had a covenant. 00:21:00.01\00:21:03.84 In the new dispensation we have a better covenant. 00:21:03.85\00:21:08.16 In the old dispensation they had prophets. 00:21:08.17\00:21:11.43 In the new dispensation 00:21:11.44\00:21:12.99 we have the Son of God, the true prophet. 00:21:13.00\00:21:16.22 In the old dispensation, they had a priesthood. 00:21:16.23\00:21:19.32 In the new dispensation, we have a better priesthood. 00:21:19.33\00:21:22.78 In the old dispensation they had a sacrifice, 00:21:22.79\00:21:25.28 we have a better sacrifice. 00:21:25.29\00:21:26.51 They had a sanctuary, we have a better sanctuary. 00:21:26.52\00:21:28.76 They had a rest, we had a better rest, they had a sacrifice, 00:21:28.77\00:21:31.80 we have a better sacrifice etcetera, etcetera. 00:21:31.81\00:21:36.08 In fact if you wanted to distill the entire Book of Hebrews 00:21:36.09\00:21:39.00 down to a single word, you know what that word would be? 00:21:39.01\00:21:43.26 Better. The whole Book of Hebrews can be distilled 00:21:43.27\00:21:47.86 down to a single word and that word is better. 00:21:47.87\00:21:50.37 They have a covenant, we have a better covenant. 00:21:50.38\00:21:51.98 They had a prophet, we have better prophets. 00:21:51.99\00:21:53.44 They had a priesthood, we have a better priesthood. 00:21:53.45\00:21:55.41 They had a sanctuary, we have a better sanctuary. 00:21:55.42\00:21:57.17 They had a rest, we have a better rest. 00:21:57.18\00:21:58.65 They had a sacrifice, we have a better sacrifice. 00:21:58.66\00:22:02.89 Now why they're concerned? 00:22:02.90\00:22:06.62 Friends, listen very carefully. 00:22:06.63\00:22:07.82 Go with me to Hebrews Chapter 12. 00:22:07.83\00:22:10.85 Hebrews, what chapter? Twelve. 00:22:10.86\00:22:13.78 Now remember, how did the Book of Hebrews begin? 00:22:13.79\00:22:15.84 What was that very basic rudimentary 00:22:15.85\00:22:18.07 beginning, what was it? 00:22:18.08\00:22:20.25 God has what? 00:22:20.26\00:22:22.93 God has spoken. 00:22:22.94\00:22:25.57 Now remarkably Hebrews ends 00:22:25.58\00:22:29.77 with this very same theme that God has spoken. 00:22:29.78\00:22:34.66 The theological content of Hebrews really ends, 00:22:34.67\00:22:37.73 that really wraps up in Hebrews Chapter 12 00:22:37.74\00:22:40.56 and I want you to notice this. 00:22:40.57\00:22:41.89 Hebrews 12:25. Hebrews Chapter 12 beginning in verse 25. 00:22:41.90\00:22:47.67 Now Hebrews of course has 13 Chapters, 00:22:47.68\00:22:49.66 we recognize that but Chapter 13 00:22:49.67\00:22:52.08 is largely exhortations, greetings, etcetera, okay. 00:22:52.09\00:22:56.03 The real thrust of the theological content of Hebrews 00:22:56.04\00:22:58.83 wraps up here in Hebrews Chapter 12. 00:22:58.84\00:23:00.57 Now notice with me verse 25, 00:23:00.58\00:23:03.03 "See that you do not refuse him who, what? 00:23:03.04\00:23:08.44 Speaks, "So notice. Hebrews begins, God has spoken, 00:23:08.45\00:23:11.53 Hebrews is ending, God has spoken. 00:23:11.54\00:23:14.93 See that you do not refuse him who speaks. 00:23:14.94\00:23:18.59 For if they did not escape who refused him who spoke on earth," 00:23:18.60\00:23:23.26 this is the reference to the Mount Sinai, 00:23:23.27\00:23:25.46 "Much more shall we not escape if we turn away 00:23:25.47\00:23:28.07 from him who speaks from" where everyone? 00:23:28.08\00:23:30.96 You see the contrast he is drawing. 00:23:30.97\00:23:33.93 If they didn't escape when that voice came thundering 00:23:33.94\00:23:37.16 from Sinai, how shall we escape if we neglect the voice 00:23:37.17\00:23:40.77 that is coming to us from the very pressings 00:23:40.78\00:23:42.99 of the celestial kingdom itself from heaven. 00:23:43.00\00:23:47.17 He goes on verse 26, "Whose voice then shook the earth, 00:23:47.18\00:23:51.01 but now he has promised, saying, 00:23:51.02\00:23:53.80 Yet once more I shake not only the earth, 00:23:53.81\00:23:57.16 but also," what everyone? Heaven. "Heaven. 00:23:57.17\00:23:59.57 Now this, yet once more, indicates 00:23:59.58\00:24:02.09 the removal of those things that are being shaken, 00:24:02.10\00:24:05.36 as of things that are made, that the things 00:24:05.37\00:24:07.52 which cannot be shaken may remain. 00:24:07.53\00:24:13.20 Therefore, since we are receiving 00:24:13.21\00:24:14.46 a kingdom which cannot be shaken, 00:24:14.47\00:24:16.09 let us have grace by which we may serve God 00:24:16.10\00:24:18.62 acceptably with reverence and godly fear." 00:24:18.63\00:24:24.56 As the author of Hebrews draws to a close. 00:24:24.57\00:24:28.88 He says the time is coming when everything 00:24:28.89\00:24:33.97 that can be shaken will be shaken. 00:24:33.98\00:24:39.71 So that only the things that cannot be shaken will remain. 00:24:39.72\00:24:45.32 Now listen very carefully. 00:24:45.33\00:24:48.83 Why is the author of Hebrews so concerned? 00:24:48.84\00:24:52.33 Why these constant reverberating, 00:24:52.34\00:24:56.92 constant repetitious exhortations, don't fall away, 00:24:56.93\00:25:01.61 don't drift away, don't neglect, hold fast, 00:25:01.62\00:25:04.42 hold fast, why, why the concern? 00:25:04.43\00:25:08.47 Friends, listen very carefully. 00:25:08.48\00:25:12.08 The Book of Hebrews was written 00:25:12.09\00:25:16.42 the general scholarly consensus 00:25:16.43\00:25:20.53 is that the Book of Hebrews 00:25:20.54\00:25:21.76 was written between 63 and 67 A.D. 00:25:21.77\00:25:28.13 I want to let that sink in. 00:25:29.96\00:25:34.09 The Book of Hebrews was written 00:25:34.10\00:25:38.12 between 63 and 67 A.D. 00:25:38.13\00:25:43.49 Now why is that so important? 00:25:43.50\00:25:47.88 Tell me why that might be important. 00:25:47.89\00:25:50.68 Friends, what seminal event is going to transpire in 70 A.D.? 00:25:50.69\00:25:56.79 What is it everyone? 00:25:56.80\00:25:59.06 The destruction of Jerusalem. 00:25:59.07\00:26:03.09 Now the epistle of Hebrews, who is this written to? 00:26:03.10\00:26:07.39 This is written to Jewish Christians, friends. 00:26:07.40\00:26:11.01 More than likely this was written specifically 00:26:11.02\00:26:13.56 to Jewish Christians who were living in the immediate vicinity 00:26:13.57\00:26:17.19 or within the actual confines of Jerusalem itself. 00:26:17.20\00:26:21.75 And now the whole thing is coming together. 00:26:21.76\00:26:25.03 The author of Hebrews knows God 00:26:25.04\00:26:27.65 has revealed to the author of Hebrews 00:26:27.66\00:26:29.74 that something terrible, 00:26:29.75\00:26:31.04 something catastrophic and cataclysmic, 00:26:31.05\00:26:33.53 something so horrendous, so as to be unimaginable 00:26:33.54\00:26:36.99 is going to take place very shortly. 00:26:37.00\00:26:40.83 Now as if that wasn't bad enough the author of Hebrews 00:26:40.84\00:26:43.24 can see that the very Jewish Christians 00:26:43.25\00:26:45.79 to whom he is writing are beginning to slide back 00:26:45.80\00:26:48.98 into some of the old forms, the old sacrifices, 00:26:48.99\00:26:51.62 the old covenant, the old priesthood, the old sanctuary, 00:26:51.63\00:26:54.84 etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. 00:26:54.85\00:26:57.06 They were loosing confidence in Christ in heaven. 00:26:57.07\00:27:00.60 Loosing confidence in the heavenly sanctuary, 00:27:00.61\00:27:02.92 loosing confidence in the heavenly sacrifice, 00:27:02.93\00:27:05.38 loosing confidence in the new covenant and their confidence 00:27:05.39\00:27:08.21 was increasingly being placed in the earthly temple, 00:27:08.22\00:27:11.88 in the earthly covenant, in the earthly sacrifice, 00:27:11.89\00:27:15.16 and in the earthly priesthood. 00:27:15.17\00:27:19.28 Now, friends, the danger here is precisely this. 00:27:19.29\00:27:22.68 As the author of Hebrews 00:27:22.69\00:27:23.87 is seeing all of this in panoramic sweep, 00:27:23.88\00:27:26.17 he knows that the very place 00:27:26.18\00:27:28.91 were all of these people are putting 00:27:28.92\00:27:30.45 an increasing amount of faith, 00:27:30.46\00:27:31.99 the temple the city Jerusalem is going to be destroyed. 00:27:32.00\00:27:37.89 Now, friends, put two and two together 00:27:37.90\00:27:39.45 and you can understand the urgency here. 00:27:39.46\00:27:44.55 If your faith is in a building, 00:27:44.56\00:27:47.61 what happens to your faith when the building is destroyed? 00:27:47.62\00:27:51.51 Where is your faith, friends? 00:27:51.52\00:27:53.66 If your faith is in a man, 00:27:53.67\00:27:55.31 what happens when that man is murdered? 00:27:55.32\00:27:58.98 If your faith is in a sanctuary system 00:27:58.99\00:28:01.87 that is here on earth, what happens when that whole building 00:28:01.88\00:28:05.85 and that whole forum in which that sacrifice takes place, 00:28:05.86\00:28:10.29 what happens when that's gone? 00:28:10.30\00:28:14.90 Now we can begin to see. 00:28:14.91\00:28:18.24 The author of Hebrews is deeply concerned, 00:28:18.25\00:28:20.92 that's why he is saying we have something better. 00:28:20.93\00:28:23.02 He knew that he needed to get those Jewish Christians 00:28:23.03\00:28:25.41 taking their eyes off of the earthly sacrifice, 00:28:25.42\00:28:27.74 off of the earthly priesthood, the earthly sanctuary, 00:28:27.75\00:28:29.88 the earthly covenant and getting their eyes on Christ in heaven. 00:28:29.89\00:28:34.69 Because when that whole thing went down 00:28:34.70\00:28:39.14 and Josephus tells us that more than a million people 00:28:39.15\00:28:42.96 lost their lives in that one conflagration. 00:28:42.97\00:28:48.30 The author of Hebrews can see it when that thing goes down, 00:28:48.31\00:28:52.25 unless their confidence is firmly rooted 00:28:52.26\00:28:56.05 and anchored in heaven, 00:28:56.06\00:29:00.73 they are going to so shaken, so as to utterly castaway 00:29:00.74\00:29:06.90 their confidence and their faith. 00:29:06.91\00:29:11.32 Notice again, Hebrews Chapter 12, let's read it. 00:29:11.33\00:29:14.39 Verse 25, "See that you do not refuse him who speaks. 00:29:14.40\00:29:21.29 For if they did not escape who refused him who spoke on earth, 00:29:21.30\00:29:24.62 how much more shall we not escape 00:29:24.63\00:29:26.53 if we turn away for him who speaks from heaven. 00:29:26.54\00:29:30.20 Whose voice then shook the earth, 00:29:30.21\00:29:31.95 but now he has promised, saying, 00:29:31.96\00:29:33.23 Yet once more I shake 00:29:33.24\00:29:34.53 not only the earth, but heaven also. 00:29:34.54\00:29:35.90 Now this once more indicates 00:29:35.91\00:29:37.47 the removal of those things that are being shaken as of things 00:29:37.48\00:29:40.16 that are being made that the things 00:29:40.17\00:29:41.43 which can not shaken may remain. 00:29:41.44\00:29:44.22 Therefore since we're receiving a kingdom 00:29:44.23\00:29:45.95 which cannot shaken, let us have grace 00:29:45.96\00:29:48.31 by which we may serve God acceptively 00:29:48.32\00:29:50.39 which reverence and godly fear 00:29:50.40\00:29:52.32 for our God is a consuming fire." Amen. 00:29:52.33\00:29:59.93 Friends, is this coming together for you now. 00:29:59.94\00:30:01.54 The whole Book of Hebrews, 00:30:01.55\00:30:02.97 I've often maintained that the Book of Hebrews 00:30:02.98\00:30:04.85 is the easiest book in the New Testament to understand. 00:30:04.86\00:30:08.29 Are there elements in there that are complex, 00:30:08.30\00:30:10.51 are there elements in there that are deep absolutely, 00:30:10.52\00:30:13.10 but the Book of Hebrews 00:30:13.11\00:30:14.53 is a piece of cake to wrap your fingers around. 00:30:14.54\00:30:18.73 You can distill it down into these two major themes 00:30:18.74\00:30:21.20 that we've discussed this evening. 00:30:21.21\00:30:22.56 Number one you have this persistent, reverberating, 00:30:22.57\00:30:26.24 reechoing exhortations, hang in there, don't fall back, 00:30:26.25\00:30:29.63 don't slide back, don't drift away, 00:30:29.64\00:30:31.35 hold fast at what you believe. 00:30:31.36\00:30:34.06 And number two, you have this consistent theme 00:30:34.07\00:30:36.40 that they had a covenant, we have a better covenant, 00:30:36.41\00:30:38.29 they had sacrifice, a better, a better, a better, a better, 00:30:38.30\00:30:41.52 because the author of Hebrews knows that if the confidence 00:30:41.53\00:30:44.19 of those people to whom he is writing is in an earthly system. 00:30:44.20\00:30:48.68 In anything that is earthly, everything that can be shaken 00:30:48.69\00:30:52.42 will be shaken and his concern is, is that those people 00:30:52.43\00:30:56.23 themselves will be utterly shaken. 00:30:56.24\00:31:02.26 Have you ever been in an earthquake? Yes. 00:31:02.27\00:31:07.40 How many people here have been in an earthquake? 00:31:07.41\00:31:09.76 Oh, these things are a joy aren't they? 00:31:09.77\00:31:16.10 At the beginning of the year in February, 00:31:16.11\00:31:19.38 my wife and I conducted a three week 00:31:19.39\00:31:21.27 evangelistic meeting on the campus of Loma Linda, 00:31:21.28\00:31:23.34 California and that was an absolute joy, 00:31:23.35\00:31:25.71 let me tell you, it was just glorious to be there. 00:31:25.72\00:31:28.24 We preached in the afternoon to about 400 to 500 students 00:31:28.25\00:31:32.60 they would come, we fed them a free meal, 00:31:32.61\00:31:34.75 so of course they were going to come. 00:31:34.76\00:31:37.08 And they sit there and while they ate 00:31:37.09\00:31:38.34 I preached my heart out for 40 minutes 00:31:38.35\00:31:40.07 and then they had to scurry off the class 00:31:40.08\00:31:41.62 and then I had preached again in the evening 00:31:41.63\00:31:42.81 to another 300 or 400 people. 00:31:42.82\00:31:44.57 It was wonderful being there, I absolutely loved it to be there, 00:31:44.58\00:31:48.46 in the new--not the new Jerusalem 00:31:48.47\00:31:50.12 but the contemporary Jerusalem of Loma Linda. 00:31:50.13\00:31:55.22 I fell like I had made my pilgrimage, 00:31:55.23\00:31:57.14 you know, now I really am a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:31:57.15\00:32:02.67 One night, oh I suppose we've been there about two weeks. 00:32:02.68\00:32:08.69 One evening I'm just sitting there and reading my Bible, 00:32:08.70\00:32:12.26 it's late in the evening, my wife has already gone to sleep, 00:32:12.27\00:32:15.38 the boys were asleep, in the quite of the evening 00:32:15.39\00:32:17.95 I, I was in my underwear just sitting there reading my Bible, 00:32:17.96\00:32:22.88 oh just having a sweet devotional time with the Lord 00:32:22.89\00:32:25.36 when all of a sudden I heard this sound, 00:32:25.37\00:32:28.53 that sounded like an explosion. 00:32:28.54\00:32:30.73 I'll tell you exactly what it sounded like. 00:32:30.74\00:32:32.24 It sounded like someone walked up to the front door 00:32:32.25\00:32:34.66 of the house, opened up the front door 00:32:34.67\00:32:37.63 and then with literally super human strength 00:32:37.64\00:32:39.94 slam that front door, it was like an explosion 00:32:39.95\00:32:43.40 but the house shook. 00:32:43.41\00:32:45.09 Now I tell you that interrupted my devotion, 00:32:45.10\00:32:47.61 I tell you that. Just boomed, just out of nowhere, 00:32:47.62\00:32:51.07 totally unannounced and I had no idea 00:32:51.08\00:32:53.17 it was coming and I thought somebody 00:32:53.18\00:32:56.46 was trying to get in the house. 00:32:56.47\00:32:58.50 That's what it sounded like to me, it sounded like somebody 00:32:58.51\00:33:00.22 was trying to break into the house and so I, I stood up, 00:33:00.23\00:33:03.35 you know, and my first thought was where is my knife. 00:33:03.36\00:33:07.66 I've a little pocket knife that a good friend of mine send me. 00:33:12.90\00:33:17.97 I normally keep it in my pants right here, 00:33:17.98\00:33:20.57 but I had my underwear on, I don't wear with my underwear. 00:33:20.58\00:33:25.34 It's a true story, I stood up and my first thought 00:33:25.35\00:33:27.64 was where is my knife and then I thought a knife, 00:33:27.65\00:33:33.65 did you hear the sound of that explosion. 00:33:33.66\00:33:38.34 Probably what I do is--It's a nice knife, 00:33:38.35\00:33:40.47 a good friend of mine name Jabel, 00:33:40.48\00:33:41.68 the young man who we named our son after, 00:33:41.69\00:33:43.42 he is the one who send it to me as, 00:33:43.43\00:33:44.71 you know, nice knife maybe I'd taken and say, 00:33:44.72\00:33:46.57 you know, here's my knife don't hurt me. 00:33:46.58\00:33:49.57 Take it as a gift you're gonna have anything you want. 00:33:49.58\00:33:53.54 So I stand up and after just a moment 00:33:53.55\00:33:55.31 I thought somebody is trying to get into this house, 00:33:55.32\00:33:56.77 I've got to find my knife, and then I thought where's my wife. 00:33:56.78\00:34:04.07 So I ran into my room and sure enough my wife 00:34:04.08\00:34:08.48 is sleeping through this and I turned the lights on 00:34:08.49\00:34:12.43 and I noticed she was kind of rousing 00:34:12.44\00:34:14.33 and she said sweetie what are you doing? 00:34:14.34\00:34:16.61 I said, I said, honey, somebody is trying 00:34:16.62\00:34:18.82 to get into the house, where is my knife. 00:34:18.83\00:34:23.16 This is a true story I'm telling you exactly like it happened. 00:34:23.17\00:34:27.66 And she said, she said, oh you mean that noise? 00:34:27.67\00:34:32.01 I said, yeah that noise. 00:34:32.02\00:34:33.15 She said, oh it was just thunder. 00:34:33.16\00:34:38.13 I looked at her and I said now you listen to me sis. 00:34:38.14\00:34:44.67 I've been alive for 30 years 00:34:44.68\00:34:48.09 and I've been through many of thunderstorm, 00:34:48.10\00:34:49.97 now that was not thunder. 00:34:49.98\00:34:51.31 Now where is my knife? 00:34:51.32\00:34:54.58 I said, I think somebody is trying to break in the house. 00:34:54.59\00:34:58.16 And now she is panicking too, right. 00:34:58.17\00:35:01.51 And so sure enough we locate the knife 00:35:01.52\00:35:03.36 and then we shut the door. 00:35:03.37\00:35:07.18 And, you know, we're just standing 00:35:07.19\00:35:08.86 there, waiting to be slain I guess, I don't know. 00:35:08.87\00:35:14.60 By the way, man, let me say something here. 00:35:14.61\00:35:18.59 I know you, man, you entertain these romantic notions 00:35:18.60\00:35:25.12 that if some rapscallions, some burglar 00:35:25.13\00:35:27.92 ever came to your house late at night that you would step up 00:35:27.93\00:35:32.21 to the plate and take care of business. 00:35:32.22\00:35:38.16 You would rush out of your room 00:35:38.17\00:35:39.46 and you go find these infiltrators. 00:35:39.47\00:35:41.71 Let me tell you it is not like that. 00:35:41.72\00:35:46.30 It is nothing like that, I just stood in that room, 00:35:46.31\00:35:49.59 I didn't even had the sense to put my pants on, 00:35:49.60\00:35:51.50 I just stood in the room. 00:35:51.51\00:35:54.57 Knife in hand, wife under my arm, just waiting. 00:35:54.58\00:36:01.48 And you know, praise the Lord for my wife, it was probably, 00:36:01.49\00:36:06.58 it's probably five minutes later, five minutes later 00:36:06.59\00:36:12.13 that my wife said, 00:36:12.14\00:36:14.87 may be it was an earthquake. 00:36:14.88\00:36:20.77 And I tell you just like a, just like a light bulb 00:36:20.78\00:36:23.50 came on I thought we're in California. 00:36:23.51\00:36:29.30 I put my knife down, put my pants on, went walked though out 00:36:29.31\00:36:35.71 the house and sure enough there were no infiltrators. 00:36:35.72\00:36:39.69 Woke up the next morning went and checked the paper 00:36:39.70\00:36:41.62 and there had been an earthquake that night. 00:36:41.63\00:36:43.58 Now let me tell you something I praised Jesus 00:36:43.59\00:36:46.48 that I don't live in California. 00:36:46.49\00:36:51.67 These earthquakes are scary business, amen. Amen. 00:36:51.68\00:36:54.71 Now let me tell you why they're so scary. 00:36:54.72\00:36:58.30 Because the things that you put confidence in, in times 00:36:58.31\00:37:01.42 of disaster or adversity or natural disaster. 00:37:01.43\00:37:04.83 The things that you put confidence in the things 00:37:04.84\00:37:06.40 like buildings or shelters or basements 00:37:06.41\00:37:09.15 etcetera, etcetera, structures. 00:37:09.16\00:37:13.26 If a hurricane comes, or a tornado comes 00:37:13.27\00:37:16.22 you know they'll tell you get in the basement. 00:37:16.23\00:37:18.09 Hide under a car, get into some structure. 00:37:18.10\00:37:20.83 Well, this doesn't work in an earthquake. 00:37:20.84\00:37:24.41 Because, friends, when you're counting on that structure, 00:37:24.42\00:37:26.60 when you're counting on that structure to be strong 00:37:26.61\00:37:29.17 what you're really saying is the steel 00:37:29.18\00:37:31.30 what ever the, the matrix of this building 00:37:31.31\00:37:34.08 is it goes into the earth and the earth 00:37:34.09\00:37:36.63 is strong and so it will be strong. 00:37:36.64\00:37:39.19 The building will be strong but, friends, 00:37:39.20\00:37:40.73 what happens when the thing, the matrix of the building 00:37:40.74\00:37:44.53 the architecture of the building 00:37:44.54\00:37:45.96 is put into something that is itself now moving. 00:37:45.97\00:37:52.80 These earthquakes don't play by the rules, 00:37:52.81\00:37:54.49 I mean everything is influx in an earthquake. 00:37:54.50\00:38:02.20 The reason they're so scary, 00:38:02.21\00:38:04.93 is that because every thing is shaking. 00:38:04.94\00:38:07.71 Every thing is moving, there is no place to go for safety. 00:38:07.72\00:38:13.53 There is no place to get your bearings. 00:38:13.54\00:38:16.83 There is nothing that you can cling to. 00:38:16.84\00:38:19.13 You're at the whim and whimsy of nature. 00:38:19.14\00:38:25.16 This is the image 00:38:25.17\00:38:27.64 that the author of Hebrews is trying to convey. 00:38:27.65\00:38:31.74 The author of Hebrew says, listen to me Jewish Christians, 00:38:31.75\00:38:36.89 you're reverting back to the earthly sanctuary. 00:38:36.90\00:38:41.67 You're reverting back to an earthly priesthood. 00:38:41.68\00:38:45.20 You're reverting back to an earthly sacrifice, 00:38:45.21\00:38:48.21 all of those things will be destroyed 00:38:48.22\00:38:50.73 and if your faith is in those things 00:38:50.74\00:38:52.60 you will be totally shaken. 00:38:52.61\00:38:58.38 The Book of Hebrews could have just as easily 00:39:00.98\00:39:03.87 been written to Seventh-day Adventist in the year 2004. 00:39:03.88\00:39:10.35 Amen. Friends, everything 00:39:10.36\00:39:11.80 that can shake is going to shake. 00:39:11.81\00:39:17.05 I want to say that again. 00:39:17.06\00:39:19.64 Everything that can shake is going to shake. 00:39:19.65\00:39:25.64 Even ministers will shake. 00:39:25.65\00:39:29.89 You had better not have your confidence in Kenneth Cox, 00:39:29.90\00:39:32.80 or David Asscherick, or Mark Finley, or Doug Batchelor, 00:39:32.81\00:39:36.12 or Danny Shelton because ministers shake my friends. 00:39:36.13\00:39:42.73 Now you can appreciate their message, 00:39:42.74\00:39:44.38 you can appreciate their style, 00:39:44.39\00:39:45.82 you can appreciate their own inimitable way 00:39:45.83\00:39:47.96 of communicating the gospel, but your confidence 00:39:47.97\00:39:50.25 had better not be in a man. Amen. 00:39:50.26\00:39:54.00 If your confidence is in a man and that man 00:39:54.01\00:39:56.42 is shaking, your faith is shaking. 00:39:56.43\00:40:01.04 Ministers shake. 00:40:01.05\00:40:04.45 Churches will shake. 00:40:04.46\00:40:09.01 There will be entire churches friends, 00:40:09.02\00:40:12.12 that will leave the great message 00:40:12.13\00:40:14.72 that has been commuted to us as a people. 00:40:14.73\00:40:19.17 Don't put too much confidence in your pastor. 00:40:19.18\00:40:22.58 You follow your pastor 00:40:22.59\00:40:23.99 in as much as what he says is consistent 00:40:24.00\00:40:26.34 with what the Bible says and don't follow him 00:40:26.35\00:40:28.41 any further than that. Amen. That's right. 00:40:28.42\00:40:32.34 You say you're a third generation Adventist, 00:40:32.35\00:40:33.93 the fourth generation Adventist, 00:40:33.94\00:40:35.44 the fifth generation Adventist. 00:40:35.45\00:40:36.67 You can't go back much further than that. 00:40:36.68\00:40:39.11 Friends, even denominations 00:40:39.12\00:40:41.20 can shake to their very foundations. 00:40:41.21\00:40:44.97 Do not be so naive as to think that our special denomination 00:40:44.98\00:40:49.16 and I love this church, amen. Amen. 00:40:49.17\00:40:51.93 Do not be so naive as to think that even this church 00:40:51.94\00:40:54.77 is not going to be shaken to its very core. Amen. 00:40:54.78\00:41:02.05 Amen.
