a background for
the Book of Daniel.

So that you get a
picture of what is happening

and taking place
in the life of Daniel.

As you remember
the children of Israel
00:28:09.56\00:28:13.18
decided that
they wanted the king.
00:28:13.19\00:28:16.26
And as the result of
that God told Samuel to listen
00:28:16.27\00:28:20.86
to what they had
to say and they chose
00:28:20.87\00:28:24.33
or God had them choose Saul
to be the first king of Israel.
00:28:24.34\00:28:30.29
But Saul was not faithful,
00:28:30.30\00:28:32.09
did not follow the Lord
00:28:32.10\00:28:33.92
and as a result
of that his lineage
00:28:33.93\00:28:37.57
was rejected and Daniel was--
00:28:37.58\00:28:42.10
excuse me, David
was put in place of Saul
00:28:42.11\00:28:46.55
and his
household became that power
00:28:46.56\00:28:51.80
that was to rule through
Israel for so many years.
00:28:51.81\00:28:55.37
But David's son Solomon
00:28:55.38\00:29:01.78
even though in the
first few years of his life
00:29:01.79\00:29:04.98
follow the Lord,
later he departed
00:29:04.99\00:29:07.24
and then in his
later life came back.
00:29:07.25\00:29:10.79
And the lineage was
passed onto his son Rehoboam.
00:29:10.80\00:29:16.85
But Rehoboam made
some unwise decisions
00:29:16.86\00:29:19.65
and there was a division,
00:29:19.66\00:29:22.77
and you remember as
the result of that Jeroboam
00:29:22.78\00:29:26.43
took ten of the
tribes of Israel and went off
00:29:26.44\00:29:30.10
and started another kingdom.
00:29:30.11\00:29:32.43
And so you have the kingdom
00:29:32.44\00:29:33.78
divided between
Jeroboam and Rehoboam.
00:29:33.79\00:29:37.64
From that point on, folks,
00:29:37.65\00:29:40.98
Israel the ten tribes
of Israel had 17 kings.
00:29:40.99\00:29:48.15
Okay. Every one of them was bad.
00:29:48.16\00:29:52.61
Seventeen kings, every
last one of them was bad.
00:29:55.35\00:30:01.16
Judah which was the other that
00:30:01.17\00:30:05.38
Rehoboam took had 19 kings.
00:30:05.39\00:30:10.15
And of those 19 kings
about half of them were bad
00:30:10.16\00:30:14.05
and about half
of them were good.
00:30:14.06\00:30:16.44
That was pretty
much the division.
00:30:16.45\00:30:18.20
During the time of Jehoshaphat
00:30:21.12\00:30:24.08
of the king of Judah,
00:30:24.09\00:30:26.25
the nation of
Israel or the ten tribes
00:30:26.26\00:30:31.85
were carried off into
captivity and dispersed.
00:30:31.86\00:30:37.17
The kingdom of Judah continued.
00:30:37.18\00:30:39.77
Some of the great kings of the
kingdom of Judah was Hezekiah.
00:30:41.27\00:30:48.00
One, a man that love
the Lord, followed Him,
00:30:48.01\00:30:52.80
very, very faithful great king.
00:30:52.81\00:30:55.95
He is great-grandson.
00:30:55.96\00:30:59.35
Josiah was also a great,
great king that love the Lord.
00:30:59.36\00:31:06.14
But Josiah was
the last good king,
00:31:06.15\00:31:12.35
wasn't anymore after
that, Josiah was the last one.
00:31:12.36\00:31:16.92
That brings me to the
point that I want to make,
00:31:16.93\00:31:20.06
is that it's under
the reign of Josiah
00:31:20.07\00:31:24.11
that Daniel is born.
00:31:24.12\00:31:27.91
This is the time
that Daniel is born,
00:31:27.92\00:31:32.14
comes on the scene of
action a very, very good time,
00:31:32.15\00:31:36.40
because there has been a
tremendous revival in Israel.
00:31:36.41\00:31:41.01
That people have turned to God.
00:31:41.02\00:31:43.17
God has poured out blessing
upon blessing upon them,
00:31:43.18\00:31:46.99
and so this is a great
time in which without question
00:31:47.00\00:31:51.27
he has received great
instructions from his parents,
00:31:51.28\00:31:55.68
the country of Israel,
or Judah has turned to God
00:31:55.69\00:31:59.26
and also there is a prophet
00:31:59.27\00:32:03.02
at this time that is
telling them what is coming,
00:32:03.03\00:32:06.18
what's taking place
encourage them to be faithful
00:32:06.19\00:32:08.74
to the Lord, and
his name is Jeremiah.
00:32:08.75\00:32:12.48
Jeremiah is there, he
is encouraging the people
00:32:12.49\00:32:16.30
so it's in this period of
time in which things are very,
00:32:16.31\00:32:20.65
very favorable in
Judah that Daniel was born.
00:32:20.66\00:32:25.99
But, folks, you must
understand that you can't,
00:32:27.82\00:32:33.94
you can't turn away from
God and go and have things done.
00:32:33.95\00:32:39.88
I don't care whether you
are talking about an individual,
00:32:39.89\00:32:42.56
or you are
talking about a nation.
00:32:42.57\00:32:44.60
If that person or
nation turns away from God,
00:32:44.61\00:32:48.12
you set in motion
certain circumstances
00:32:48.13\00:32:53.07
is going to take place
that those things will happen
00:32:53.08\00:32:57.48
unless divine
intervention takes place.
00:32:57.49\00:33:02.51
And by the bad kings of
Judah, they set in motion
00:33:02.52\00:33:07.57
certain events by foreign
powers coming down upon them
00:33:07.58\00:33:12.79
and these events begin
to take place and no matter
00:33:12.80\00:33:17.30
what happen unless God
intervene those circumstances
00:33:17.31\00:33:22.30
is going to happen,
and that's why Jeremiah

is over and over
telling the people,

this is what is going to happen.

Josiah; very, very
good king down in Egypt.
00:33:33.08\00:33:39.81
There is a Pharaoh by the
name of Pharaoh Neco, okay.
00:33:41.29\00:33:46.89
Over in
Babylon, there is a ruler
00:33:48.69\00:33:53.90
by the name of Nabopolassar.
00:33:53.91\00:33:57.77
He has grown old and there has--
00:33:57.78\00:34:01.84
he has taken over the kingdom,
00:34:01.85\00:34:03.97
and there has risen
some opposition to him
00:34:03.98\00:34:08.23
up in a place called Carchemish.
00:34:08.24\00:34:11.12
He feels that he is too
old to go and take care of this
00:34:11.13\00:34:16.06
and so he has sent his
son up to put down the revoke
00:34:16.07\00:34:21.39
his name is
Nebuchadnezzar, okay.
00:34:21.40\00:34:25.10
Pharaoh Neco sees
this is an opportunity,
00:34:27.81\00:34:32.18
because he feels if he can
go up and join forces with them
00:34:32.19\00:34:36.87
up in Carchemish, and
overthrow Nebuchadnezzar,
00:34:36.88\00:34:41.48
then he will take over
the whole part of the country.

So you find him making his
way from Egypt up to Carchemish
00:34:45.37\00:34:50.41
and as he gets to
the plains of Megiddo,
00:34:50.42\00:34:55.63
Josiah decides to
go out and stop him.

You can read in
the new scripture,

last part of Second Kings.

Josiah goes out
to stop Pharaoh Neco,

but Josiah is
killed, slain in battle.

You find that with
the death of Josiah,

the people decided to put

Josiah's son Jehoahaz

on the throne, and
he was on the throne

for about three months
when Pharaoh Neco decided

to come up and to bring
all of Israel under his power.

be servants of him,

he took away Jehoahaz,

he begin to rule Israel,

about three years, okay.

that, but in three years.

that while he is there,

overthrew, took captives of it.

happened that Nebuchadnezzar

received word that his father,

If you look at the map

from Israel over to Babylon,

if you go across the desert,

it's almost a 1000 miles.

Now Nebuchadnezzar took
a servant and some horses,

and he and that servant
rode across that desert,

a 1000 miles back to Babylon.

That is not the way, they
normally traveled, I mean,

because the chances of dying out
on the desert are so tremendous

time was of an essence,

they didn't take

they took around what was
called the Fertile Crescent.

river all the way around,

because there was water
and there was things to eat

and this was the
way that they went back.

So this is what
has happened here,

so Nebuchadnezzar now has given

his captain of the
guard instructions.

He has given him instructions
that he wants them to secure

bring them back
to Babylon, okay.

Nebuchadnezzar
is not dumb, folks.

greatest generals that ever

lived is Nebuchadnezzar,
never lost a battle.

He realizes that
he is overthrowing

he has just subdued Israel.

He is going take
over others he knows that,

and so he wants to
bring into his court

young men that
he can train, okay.

So they brought or they chose

about 50 young men,

50 young men to take them
back to the courts of Babylon.

There they're going to
train them and help them

to become leaders in
the country of Babylon.
