My hope is built on nothing less 00:01:29.83\00:01:36.56 Than Jesus' blood and righteousness 00:01:36.57\00:01:45.16 No merit of my own I claim 00:01:45.17\00:01:51.67 But wholly lean on Jesus' name 00:01:51.68\00:01:59.36 On Christ, the solid rock, I stand 00:01:59.37\00:02:05.80 All other ground is sinking sand 00:02:05.81\00:02:13.79 When darkness veils his lovely face 00:02:19.42\00:02:25.51 I rest on his unchanging grace 00:02:25.52\00:02:31.78 In every high and story gale 00:02:31.79\00:02:38.01 My anchor holds within the veil 00:02:38.02\00:02:44.36 On Christ, the solid rock, I stand 00:02:44.37\00:02:50.58 All other ground is sinking sand 00:02:50.59\00:02:58.59 His oath, his covenant, his blood 00:03:04.45\00:03:10.50 Sustain me in the raging flood 00:03:10.51\00:03:16.94 When all supports are washed away 00:03:16.95\00:03:23.54 He then is all my hope and stay 00:03:23.55\00:03:30.55 On Christ, the solid rock, I stand 00:03:30.56\00:03:37.15 All other ground is sinking sand 00:03:37.16\00:03:46.10 When he shall come with trumpet sound 00:04:14.98\00:04:21.48 Oh, may I then in him be found 00:04:21.49\00:04:28.08 Clothed in his righteousness alone 00:04:28.09\00:04:34.62 Redeemed to stand before the throne 00:04:34.63\00:04:41.12 On Christ, the solid rock, I stand 00:04:41.13\00:04:47.91 All other ground is sinking sand 00:04:47.92\00:04:56.34 Amen. Amen. 00:05:06.11\00:05:13.73 The Bible predicted a time, a time like ours 00:05:18.98\00:05:22.60 when the world would be 00:05:22.61\00:05:23.71 plummeting toward its final destiny. 00:05:23.72\00:05:26.37 Nature thrown out of her course, some of the worst fires 00:05:26.38\00:05:30.45 and natural disasters ever recorded in history 00:05:30.46\00:05:33.83 with violence and crimes spreading 00:05:33.84\00:05:35.89 like a cancer in the big cities. 00:05:35.90\00:05:37.98 And the passions of men spilling over into the global conflicts 00:05:37.99\00:05:41.34 that seem to involve every nation on earth. 00:05:41.35\00:05:44.95 Now, it's the time to broadcast, to witness, 00:05:44.96\00:05:49.82 to train, to evangelize. 00:05:49.83\00:05:52.48 In 2002, Pastor Doug Batchelor presented 00:05:57.57\00:06:00.92 Visions for Life in Cameroon, Central Africa. 00:06:00.93\00:06:04.49 His 24 night series was held in the city of Yaoundé. 00:06:04.50\00:06:08.57 The program was broadcasted in 24 languages 00:06:08.58\00:06:11.34 and reached more than 30 countries. 00:06:11.35\00:06:14.01 Five thousand people were baptized in Cameroon alone. 00:06:14.02\00:06:17.89 There were 1,600 downlink sites on the continent of Africa 00:06:17.90\00:06:21.23 and many countries participated 00:06:21.24\00:06:23.20 in the 'Visions for Life' satellite evangelistic effort. 00:06:23.21\00:06:27.88 So in these seminars, we're presenting Jesus. 00:06:27.89\00:06:30.04 We're talking about Jesus as the resurrection in the life. 00:06:30.05\00:06:32.87 Jesus as the Savior of your will. 00:06:32.88\00:06:34.69 Jesus as the theme of Bible prophecy. 00:06:34.70\00:06:37.64 Jesus as the soon coming king. 00:06:37.65\00:06:40.27 Jesus as our a mediator between us and God. 00:06:40.28\00:06:44.15 People are meeting Jesus. 00:06:44.16\00:06:45.52 People are becoming one with Jesus. 00:06:45.53\00:06:46.88 They're being changed by Jesus. 00:06:46.89\00:06:50.38 That's gonna continue to happen as long as 00:06:50.39\00:06:52.67 we have breath to proclaim His message. 00:06:52.68\00:06:54.85 Ah, I will tell you about a friend of mine name Tim. 00:06:54.86\00:06:58.12 Ah, he learned some things from the Bible, 00:06:58.13\00:07:01.84 he started watching some television programming 00:07:01.85\00:07:04.34 and he started watching Doug Batchelor 00:07:04.35\00:07:06.19 in the Millennium of Prophecy. 00:07:06.20\00:07:09.31 He woke up one Saturday morning and he said, 00:07:09.32\00:07:14.46 okay, I know it's the Sabbath, I'm going to church today. 00:07:14.47\00:07:18.56 Now, you understand that as when I prayed this prayer, 00:07:18.57\00:07:22.40 I don't have a clue where a Sabbath keeping church is 00:07:22.41\00:07:25.83 and I'm in Sacramento. 00:07:25.84\00:07:27.32 I'm, you know, as I was going I said, 00:07:27.33\00:07:28.76 Lord, I'm going to church 00:07:28.77\00:07:30.72 and You're going to just have to direct me where to go. 00:07:30.73\00:07:34.85 I noticed a neighbor was backing out of their driveway. 00:07:34.86\00:07:41.69 A man and his wife and they were dressed in nice clothes. 00:07:41.70\00:07:45.70 Now I don't know where they're going, 00:07:45.71\00:07:48.26 but I was impressed to follow them. 00:07:48.27\00:07:51.79 So I mean this is like a ten mile trip 00:07:51.80\00:07:55.58 and I'm going, you know where are this people going, 00:07:55.59\00:07:58.11 they were a long ways from my house now. 00:07:58.12\00:08:01.16 They pulled half of the freeway 00:08:01.17\00:08:02.93 and into a school parking lot. 00:08:02.94\00:08:07.42 And I felt impressed to keep following them. 00:08:07.43\00:08:10.36 So I got out of my car, they went into there, 00:08:10.37\00:08:14.05 school there and went into a auditorium 00:08:14.06\00:08:16.03 and I was right behind them. 00:08:16.04\00:08:17.78 And lo and behold, when I walked into the auditorium, 00:08:17.79\00:08:20.46 there was a Seventh-day Adventist Church meeting 00:08:20.47\00:08:22.90 in the school auditorium. 00:08:22.91\00:08:24.71 So it was a very first time 00:08:24.72\00:08:27.06 that I had ever attended church on Sabbath. because I wanted to 00:09:07.89\00:09:09.92 know the Bible better and I had this desire to, 00:09:09.93\00:09:12.98 wanna share my faith with people, 00:09:12.99\00:09:14.67 but I didn't know how? 00:09:14.68\00:09:15.73 I wanted to know the how. 00:09:15.74\00:09:17.50 AFCO was an incredible experience. 00:09:17.51\00:09:20.68 I learned how to deal with, how to work with people, 00:09:20.69\00:09:24.06 how to share my faith, 00:09:24.07\00:09:25.86 how to be able to reach the heart 00:09:25.87\00:09:27.28 and it was an experience that just completely 00:09:27.29\00:09:29.66 changed my own life. 00:09:29.67\00:09:31.23 The teachers at AFCO are wonderful. 00:09:31.24\00:09:34.11 They're funny, they're down to earth 00:09:34.12\00:09:36.27 but they're, I mean they're spiritual, 00:09:36.28\00:09:39.28 very, very spiritual people. 00:09:39.29\00:09:41.74 Amazing Facts College of Evangelism 00:09:41.75\00:09:44.24 or AFCO offers a four months, a two week condensed program, 00:09:44.25\00:09:48.41 a one month introductory Bible worker program 00:09:48.42\00:09:51.66 and a six week youth in action literature evangelism course. 00:09:51.67\00:09:55.62 It's interesting because my husband and I 00:09:59.53\00:10:01.52 are always, you know, asking the Lord 00:10:01.53\00:10:03.04 to show us ways to, to witness to people. 00:10:03.05\00:10:07.16 I was introduced to Amazing Facts by Kimberly. 00:10:07.17\00:10:10.23 She came through, I work at Ballard 00:10:10.24\00:10:12.41 and she had come to my line 00:10:12.42\00:10:15.07 and I noticed that she ate very well. 00:10:15.08\00:10:18.60 She grabbed some of my eggplant 00:10:18.61\00:10:20.22 and holds it up and says how do you cook this? 00:10:20.23\00:10:23.34 And I said well, since I'm vegetarian 00:10:23.35\00:10:25.43 this is the way I do it. 00:10:25.44\00:10:26.88 And she immediately says, 00:10:26.89\00:10:29.36 oh my word, I've been wanting to learn how to cook vegetarian. 00:10:29.37\00:10:32.41 It was interesting from the very beginning, 00:10:32.42\00:10:33.97 Shawna was like, 00:10:33.98\00:10:34.99 well,I don't know if I believe in God. 00:10:35.00\00:10:37.03 It's a personal being that loves me 00:10:37.04\00:10:38.82 that I just have such a different perspective, 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.10 it's like, it just bring tears in my eyes, 00:10:41.11\00:10:43.52 I know that there is God up there 00:10:43.53\00:10:46.45 who loves each and everyone of us, 00:10:46.46\00:10:47.89 He wants to save us. 00:10:47.90\00:10:48.89 So we really found we needed some tools 00:10:48.90\00:10:51.61 and the Millennium of Prophecy video site from Amazing Facts, 00:10:51.62\00:10:56.41 was an excellent tool in guiding Shawna and David. 00:10:56.42\00:10:59.32 And actually I'm, my husband and I 00:10:59.33\00:11:01.50 are getting baptized next week, next Saturday. 00:11:01.54\00:11:05.09 We're so excited like I never went. 00:11:05.10\00:11:07.86 It's about 23 years, abusing, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, 00:11:13.21\00:11:18.91 and about anything I could put into my body, I abused. 00:11:18.92\00:11:22.31 Ah, well, I was a drug addict for 25 years 00:11:22.32\00:11:26.39 and I found myself in three time felon back in jail 00:11:26.40\00:11:29.68 again with weapons charges 00:11:29.69\00:11:31.87 and facing state prison time and ended up that, 00:11:31.88\00:11:37.60 the last time I went into prison, 00:11:37.61\00:11:38.88 I realized that if I didn't stop using, 00:11:38.89\00:11:41.87 I was gonna die. 00:11:41.88\00:11:43.26 And we were clean and sober 00:11:43.27\00:11:45.42 and we had a little 19 inch or 13 inch T.V. 00:11:45.43\00:11:47.97 with rabbit ears, soon he started 00:11:47.98\00:11:49.92 flipping the channels and lo and behold, 00:11:49.93\00:11:51.73 channel 27 came on 00:11:51.74\00:11:53.56 and it was Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:11:53.57\00:11:55.64 We're having trouble understanding the Bible 00:11:55.65\00:11:57.18 because everything was hard to read 00:11:57.19\00:11:59.22 and the words were hard to pronounce 00:11:59.23\00:12:01.54 but we'd have a question we turned the T.V. on 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.16 that night and he would answer the question 00:12:04.17\00:12:06.22 whether it would be on Sabbath or tithing 00:12:06.23\00:12:08.00 or State of the Dead and we knew that it was the truth. 00:12:08.01\00:12:12.29 We knew that he was speaking from the Bible, 00:12:12.30\00:12:13.75 and the Bible only. 00:12:13.76\00:12:14.76 And one day I walked into Taco Bell 00:12:14.77\00:12:17.53 and there was Pastor Doug 00:12:17.54\00:12:19.64 and so I walked up to him and I asked him 00:12:19.65\00:12:21.34 if he was the man on T.V. and he said yes he was 00:12:21.35\00:12:23.54 and so I told him a little about our testimony. 00:12:23.55\00:12:26.28 And he ran out to his car and he got a book 00:12:26.29\00:12:29.68 and invited us to church. 00:12:29.69\00:12:31.32 And it was Pastor Doug, he said, how you guys are doing? 00:12:31.33\00:12:33.74 And I said Pastor Doug, I just quit smoking. 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.37 So we know it's time to get baptized. 00:12:35.38\00:12:37.53 Millions of viewers like Rich and Susan have the opportunity 00:12:37.54\00:12:40.56 to hear the word of God, pure, simple and Christ centered. 00:12:40.57\00:12:44.69 The Millennium of Prophecy series is broadcast 00:12:44.70\00:12:47.28 on 12 networks in the U.S., Asia, 00:12:47.29\00:12:49.80 the Middle East and Russia and 210 T.V. stations in the U.S. 00:12:49.81\00:12:55.89 Every Sunday evening, Pastor Doug Batchelor presents 00:12:55.90\00:12:59.14 Bible answers live, a nationwide call in program. 00:12:59.15\00:13:03.41 Over 150 radio stations in the U.S. carry the program, 00:13:03.42\00:13:07.41 enabling people to learn 00:13:07.42\00:13:08.85 many wonderful truths from God's word. 00:13:08.86\00:13:11.88 Your involvement in this ministry 00:13:11.89\00:13:13.64 will make a difference to people all over the world. 00:13:13.65\00:13:16.44 We solicit your prayers for God's guidance in the future. 00:13:16.45\00:13:20.11 Now, it's the time. 00:13:20.12\00:13:21.78 We introduced Pastor Batchelor, 00:13:28.74\00:13:30.47 Doug Batchelor last night to our camp meeting pulpit 00:13:30.48\00:13:34.00 and we welcome him again this morning. 00:13:34.01\00:13:35.99 May God bless you as the Holy Spirit 00:13:36.00\00:13:38.55 speaks to us through you. 00:13:38.56\00:13:40.20 Thank you. God bless happy Sabbath. 00:13:48.17\00:13:53.11 It's a privilege to be with you and where is Mrs. Batchelor. 00:13:53.12\00:13:58.33 Oh, you got up front, God bless you heart, 00:14:00.83\00:14:03.19 thank you, dear. 00:14:03.20\00:14:05.41 I appreciate that, she usually signals me 00:14:05.42\00:14:07.50 while I'm preaching and when she was way back there, 00:14:07.51\00:14:09.16 I couldn't get my signals. 00:14:09.17\00:14:10.41 The signals are something like, or she is, 00:14:12.19\00:14:18.16 I get this one a lot. 00:14:22.95\00:14:26.58 Am I right? 00:14:26.59\00:14:28.87 So I couldn't see my signals last night. 00:14:28.88\00:14:33.04 You know, I felt impressed just a few minutes ago 00:14:33.05\00:14:35.39 while we're sitting on the platform. 00:14:35.40\00:14:37.83 I've been praying about what to share with you. 00:14:37.84\00:14:40.09 you know, I'm used to doing evangelistic meetings 00:14:40.10\00:14:42.04 where I have 36 opportunities to tell you 00:14:42.05\00:14:45.05 what I wanna tell you 00:14:45.06\00:14:46.05 but when I have these three messages, 00:14:46.06\00:14:49.43 it's very precious and I really pray about 00:14:49.44\00:14:51.49 what to say and I pray God will guide me 00:14:51.50\00:14:53.23 because everyone's needs are different 00:14:53.24\00:14:56.43 and I just wanted to be the most fruitful for you. 00:14:56.44\00:15:00.07 I wanna talk to you very simply this morning about the Gospel. 00:15:00.08\00:15:03.89 And as a catalyst to do that, 00:15:03.90\00:15:05.89 I'm going to ask you to turn in your Bibles 00:15:05.90\00:15:08.03 to the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 10, 00:15:08.04\00:15:11.00 I will be going to verse 25, 00:15:13.42\00:15:18.50 as you're finding your way there, 00:15:18.51\00:15:20.55 I would like to just pray one more time 00:15:20.56\00:15:22.87 if that would be okay. 00:15:22.88\00:15:23.88 Oh, mighty God, during this Holy Sabbath day, 00:15:27.45\00:15:31.55 we now in a very special sense, want to focus our minds 00:15:31.56\00:15:37.28 and tune in to the voice of the Holy Spirit 00:15:37.29\00:15:40.97 speaking through the Holy Bible. 00:15:40.98\00:15:43.66 Lord, I pray that You'll speak to our hearts. 00:15:43.67\00:15:45.68 We're here now, are watching by virtue of Your providence 00:15:45.69\00:15:50.85 and I ask that there'll be a fruit 00:15:50.86\00:15:53.01 that will be born in our lives as a result of 00:15:53.02\00:15:54.89 what we hear that will help us better reflect Jesus. 00:15:54.90\00:15:58.23 In his name we pray, amen. 00:15:58.24\00:16:02.92 The Gospel of Luke is probably the favorite Gospel 00:16:02.93\00:16:06.00 for me of the four. 00:16:06.01\00:16:07.63 You know, most people if you ask them, 00:16:07.64\00:16:09.07 they would say John is their favorite Gospel. 00:16:09.08\00:16:11.31 Well, I'll ask you, how many of your favorite Gospel is John? 00:16:11.32\00:16:14.53 Gospel of John? Anyone vote for Matthew? 00:16:14.54\00:16:18.20 Lots of Matthew's out there. Mark? 00:16:18.21\00:16:22.05 Mark's fast moving Gospel. 00:16:22.06\00:16:23.64 Luke? Oh, few are with me. 00:16:23.65\00:16:26.91 It's kind of odd that I'm Jewish 00:16:26.92\00:16:28.02 and my favorite Gospel is the one written by the Gentile. 00:16:28.03\00:16:30.89 But I really enjoy the Gospel of Luke 00:16:30.90\00:16:33.35 because it's so precious, there's a number of stories 00:16:33.36\00:16:36.07 you find in Luke, you don't find anywhere else. 00:16:36.08\00:16:38.20 You of course find the story of the lost son, prodigal son. 00:16:38.21\00:16:42.03 You find the story of Zacchaeus and number of other parables 00:16:42.04\00:16:46.35 the Lost Sheep and this another example, 00:16:46.36\00:16:48.97 the parable of the Good Samaritan, 00:16:48.98\00:16:50.64 where would we be without this wonderful story 00:16:50.65\00:16:53.92 that helps us to understand the plan of Salvation. 00:16:53.93\00:16:59.63 Jesus is going through one of his dialogues 00:16:59.64\00:17:02.34 with some of the religious leaders and the lawyers. 00:17:02.35\00:17:04.95 And in verse 25 that tells us 00:17:04.96\00:17:06.38 a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, 00:17:06.39\00:17:10.62 saying teacher what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 00:17:10.63\00:17:15.10 That's a big question. Can you imagine? 00:17:15.11\00:17:20.30 Just think about it. 00:17:20.31\00:17:22.86 We have the opportunity to live forever. 00:17:22.87\00:17:26.99 Have you ever really thought about that? 00:17:27.00\00:17:29.48 That this life is simply the launching pad for eternity. 00:17:29.49\00:17:35.14 And how you position yourself in this life will determine 00:17:35.15\00:17:37.86 your orbit forever and ever. 00:17:37.87\00:17:41.11 Eternal life or eternal death? Those are our choices. 00:17:41.12\00:17:46.02 He that has the son has life, do you have eternal life? 00:17:46.03\00:17:51.40 Whoever believes in him shall not perish. 00:17:51.41\00:17:54.65 What a wonderful promise, the gift of God is eternal life, 00:17:54.66\00:17:57.70 penalty for sin is death, 00:17:57.71\00:17:58.75 but the gift of God, eternal life. 00:17:58.76\00:18:03.36 Not in a world like this, 00:18:03.37\00:18:04.48 you know, we only think we can relate to is this life, 00:18:04.49\00:18:06.86 but the Bible says you can't imagine what that's like. 00:18:06.87\00:18:11.11 Someone tried to illustrate one time what eternity was like? 00:18:11.12\00:18:14.46 I have heard a lot of creative ideas. 00:18:14.47\00:18:16.73 Imagine a sparrow lands on half a dome in your cemetery, 00:18:16.74\00:18:23.19 that great big granite boulder, mountain, granite mountain 00:18:23.20\00:18:27.28 and he sharpens his beak once every thousand years, 00:18:27.29\00:18:30.52 a sparrow lands on that granite half dome mountain 00:18:30.53\00:18:35.31 sharpens his beak. 00:18:35.32\00:18:38.40 When that mountain has worn away 00:18:38.41\00:18:41.87 from a sparrow sharpening his beak 00:18:41.88\00:18:43.68 once every thousand years, ternity will have just began. 00:18:43.69\00:18:49.81 Isn't that right? 00:18:49.82\00:18:51.39 Because eternity never ends, 00:18:51.40\00:18:52.61 you never get off the starting line. 00:18:52.62\00:18:56.65 Do you want eternal life? 00:18:56.66\00:18:59.18 You know the Bible says it's not like this life, 00:18:59.19\00:19:01.31 at His right hand are pleasures forever more, 00:19:01.32\00:19:04.69 bliss, joy, happiness, no more tears, no more pain. 00:19:04.70\00:19:09.89 You'll able to see like an eagle, 00:19:09.90\00:19:14.09 hear like an elephant, smell like a Basset Hound, right? 00:19:14.10\00:19:19.28 Could be taken two ways. You can't imagine it. 00:19:19.29\00:19:24.35 You know, I think that if we had more assurance 00:19:24.36\00:19:27.99 that we have life we would be better soul winners. 00:19:28.00\00:19:32.14 If we really believe that we're going to live forever 00:19:32.15\00:19:36.55 and be with Jesus in glory, in bliss forever, 00:19:36.56\00:19:40.47 I think we'd be happier. 00:19:40.48\00:19:43.00 But you know Seventh-day Adventists, 00:19:43.01\00:19:45.72 because we have been carefully trained not to say 00:19:45.73\00:19:47.59 I'm saved or rightly so, we think that means 00:19:47.60\00:19:51.83 we cannot have assurance. 00:19:51.84\00:19:54.32 And why we should not brag that we have arrived, 00:19:54.33\00:19:57.70 I think God wants us to have a joy 00:19:57.71\00:19:59.77 and an assurance that He 00:19:59.78\00:20:01.10 that He's began a good work in us will perform it. 00:20:01.11\00:20:03.65 He's the author and the finisher of our faith. 00:20:03.66\00:20:06.05 And if you have faith in God and if you got everlasting life, 00:20:06.06\00:20:11.35 that ought to give you a joy and confidence, 00:20:11.36\00:20:13.52 that's contagious. 00:20:13.53\00:20:15.66 Christians ought to have more zip in their hip 00:20:15.67\00:20:18.20 and pep in their step and spunk in their trunk 00:20:18.21\00:20:21.40 and maybe a little less fanatic in the attic, right? 00:20:21.41\00:20:28.00 And if we've got this joy and this assurance 00:20:28.01\00:20:31.22 and this confidence, it's contagious. 00:20:31.23\00:20:35.08 You know, we'll just be going from one person 00:20:35.09\00:20:36.59 to the next and telling them about 00:20:36.60\00:20:38.21 what the Lord has done for us. 00:20:38.22\00:20:41.28 Its like a man in New York city who had this eye surgery, 00:20:41.29\00:20:44.97 he was virtually blind, he went to an eye doctor 00:20:44.98\00:20:47.37 that not only restored his sight 00:20:47.38\00:20:49.21 but gave him 20-20 after years of being blind, 00:20:49.22\00:20:52.17 having that peeled away. 00:20:52.18\00:20:53.26 Can you imagine what that's like? 00:20:53.27\00:20:55.19 A few years ago, Karen, when I married her, 00:20:55.20\00:20:58.07 she had, well is it 2,200? 00:20:58.08\00:21:01.68 She was blind without her glasses 00:21:01.69\00:21:05.13 and I had these visions that during the time of trouble. 00:21:05.14\00:21:08.10 I'd be leading her through the hills 00:21:08.11\00:21:09.48 if she lost her glasses. 00:21:09.49\00:21:13.99 She went to have this Lasik surgery now, 00:21:14.00\00:21:16.69 just about perfect vision. 00:21:16.70\00:21:17.75 She doesn't wear glasses or contacts anymore 00:21:17.76\00:21:19.95 and now I have got glasses. 00:21:19.96\00:21:20.99 Isn't that, that's not fair, is it? 00:21:21.00\00:21:24.76 So this man goes to the doctor after years of not seeing. 00:21:24.77\00:21:28.14 He has surgery, virtually blind, now he could see, 00:21:28.15\00:21:30.69 he's so excited, he goes and sees 00:21:30.70\00:21:32.00 the doctor every few weeks, 00:21:32.01\00:21:33.00 he takes a stack of business cards, 00:21:33.01\00:21:34.77 he goes through the subway on his way to work, 00:21:34.78\00:21:36.66 he said I always almost blind, 00:21:36.79\00:21:37.79 this doctor gave me my sight, I was always almost blind, 00:21:37.80\00:21:39.97 this doctor gave me back my sight, you got to see him. 00:21:39.98\00:21:41.91 Everybody with glasses, he gives those to. 00:21:41.92\00:21:44.25 Why does he do that? 00:21:44.26\00:21:45.75 He is so happy that he's got his sight, 00:21:45.76\00:21:48.41 he wants everyone else to have it. 00:21:48.42\00:21:50.77 If you have eternal life, you want to tell people, 00:21:50.78\00:21:54.92 Amen. Amen 00:21:54.93\00:21:56.30 Bible tells us in Second Kings Chapter 7 verse 9, 00:21:56.33\00:22:01.61 those lepers found that incredible treasure 00:22:01.62\00:22:04.39 and they began to hoard it and bury it 00:22:04.40\00:22:07.78 and one of them came to his senses 00:22:07.79\00:22:08.94 and he said today is the day of good news 00:22:08.95\00:22:10.74 and we hold our peace. 00:22:10.75\00:22:12.84 If we tarry till the morning light, 00:22:12.85\00:22:14.33 some mischief will come upon us, come now 00:22:14.34\00:22:16.31 that we may go and tell the kings household, 00:22:16.32\00:22:18.64 this is a day of good news. 00:22:18.65\00:22:20.97 All beggars lay out of the gate, 00:22:20.98\00:22:22.28 desiring the crumbs would fall from our table 00:22:22.29\00:22:26.46 while we argue among ourselves. 00:22:26.47\00:22:28.94 Eternal life. What a message. 00:22:28.95\00:22:32.84 But you know ancient is real like modern is real, 00:22:32.85\00:22:35.85 they did not have assurance. 00:22:35.86\00:22:39.11 And so here's a lawyer, 00:22:39.12\00:22:40.11 he spends all his time studying the word 00:22:40.12\00:22:41.71 and he doesn't know how to get eternal life. 00:22:41.72\00:22:43.66 Very basic thing. 00:22:46.03\00:22:48.58 He said Lord what must I do that I have, 00:22:48.59\00:22:50.95 can have eternal life? 00:22:50.96\00:22:51.97 Now what does Jesus say what is written in the law, 00:22:51.98\00:22:54.42 now don't miss that. 00:22:54.43\00:22:55.61 The answer to eternal life is in what is written. 00:22:55.62\00:23:00.73 God has given us the answer. 00:23:00.74\00:23:03.17 If you read what is written, you'll find the answer. 00:23:03.18\00:23:06.50 Christ is the word, Jesus is life 00:23:06.51\00:23:08.75 and He's the bread of life, He's the word made flesh, 00:23:08.76\00:23:12.63 it is written and He's saying to the lawyer 00:23:12.64\00:23:14.48 whose full time occupation is studying the word 00:23:14.49\00:23:17.65 and yet he doesn't know where to get eternal life? 00:23:17.66\00:23:20.79 Few things are more pathetic than a person 00:23:20.80\00:23:23.30 who is full time employed and telling others about Jesus 00:23:23.31\00:23:26.44 and eternal life who himself does not know 00:23:26.45\00:23:28.48 how to get eternal life. 00:23:28.49\00:23:32.73 And this lawyer is asking Jesus and He says 00:23:32.74\00:23:36.22 it's in the word and then He also refers into the law. 00:23:36.23\00:23:40.33 You know there are couple of occasions 00:23:40.34\00:23:41.41 where somebody specifically said to Jesus, 00:23:41.42\00:23:44.01 what must I do that I can have eternal life? 00:23:44.02\00:23:46.43 The rich young ruler came to him 00:23:46.44\00:23:47.95 and he said what is written in law 00:23:47.96\00:23:49.63 What are the commandments? 00:23:49.64\00:23:50.70 Now don't miss this. 00:23:53.17\00:23:56.46 We're saved by grace 00:23:56.47\00:23:57.79 but when we're aved by grace, 00:23:57.80\00:23:59.02 God gives us new hearts and He wants us to obey Him. 00:23:59.03\00:24:02.26 Obedience is not legalism. 00:24:02.27\00:24:06.35 Do not ever be ashamed of telling people 00:24:06.36\00:24:08.98 that God wants us to turn from our sins and obey Him. 00:24:08.99\00:24:13.56 And so He directs him and He says what is written in the law. 00:24:13.57\00:24:15.78 Well, He summarizes the Ten Commandments 00:24:15.79\00:24:17.84 and you know, this is what Jesus did for the rich young ruler. 00:24:17.85\00:24:20.23 He summarized the Ten Commandments, 00:24:20.24\00:24:22.98 and here He summarizes the Ten Commandments 00:24:22.99\00:24:25.06 and He says, you should love the Lord your God, 00:24:25.07\00:24:28.29 I'm in verse 27, with all your heart, with all your soul, 00:24:28.30\00:24:30.66 with all your strength, with all your mind 00:24:30.67\00:24:32.56 and love your neighbor as yourself. 00:24:32.57\00:24:34.28 This is the essence of the great love, the moral quote, 00:24:34.29\00:24:37.86 the Ten Commandments is to love the Lord with all your heart 00:24:37.87\00:24:40.30 and love your neighbor. 00:24:40.31\00:24:41.30 And if you really love God and really love your neighbor, 00:24:43.73\00:24:45.94 you'll be keeping the Ten Commandments. 00:24:45.95\00:24:48.74 You cannot explain to me a rational reason 00:24:48.75\00:24:51.07 why you'd break the Ten Commandments, 00:24:51.08\00:24:52.66 while you really love the Lord with all your heart 00:24:52.67\00:24:54.83 and love your neighbor as yourself. 00:24:54.84\00:24:56.08 And so Jesus said you have answered correctly, 00:24:58.57\00:25:00.85 do this and you'll live. 00:25:00.86\00:25:03.19 Well, that seems too simple, 00:25:03.20\00:25:04.75 He needed to make it more complicated. 00:25:04.76\00:25:07.08 Well, I can understand what it means the love of God, 00:25:07.09\00:25:09.49 but you know, its very hard to tell who our neighbor is. 00:25:09.50\00:25:13.05 And so he fell kind of sheepish when Jesus said 00:25:13.06\00:25:15.28 you have answered your own question. 00:25:15.29\00:25:17.78 So he said well, but who is my neighbor 00:25:17.79\00:25:20.95 Verse 29, and I think it's interesting the Bible, 00:25:20.96\00:25:23.96 it says love your enemies 00:25:23.97\00:25:25.49 and then it says love your neighbors. 00:25:25.50\00:25:28.73 Is that because our neighbors are often our biggest enemies? 00:25:28.74\00:25:33.71 You notice that the children of Israel 00:25:33.72\00:25:35.79 often had more stress and grief from their own family 00:25:35.80\00:25:42.14 than they did from the Pagans around them. 00:25:42.15\00:25:44.79 Who was it that betrayed Joseph? His brothers. 00:25:44.80\00:25:48.68 Who was it that rebelled against David? 00:25:48.69\00:25:50.65 His son. Who tried to kill David? 00:25:50.66\00:25:53.22 King Sol, his king. 00:25:53.23\00:25:55.69 You go through the Bible and you'll find 00:25:55.70\00:25:57.01 that it was the northern kingdom killing the southern kingdom 00:25:57.02\00:25:59.48 that did more damage than the Philistines 00:25:59.49\00:26:01.70 were the Ammonites, or Edomites, or Moabites. 00:26:01.71\00:26:05.46 And we can get distractive fighting among ourselves 00:26:05.47\00:26:08.38 and forget what the real mission is. 00:26:08.39\00:26:11.02 That's what the Bible says, love your enemy 00:26:11.03\00:26:13.59 and then it says love your neighbor, 00:26:13.60\00:26:14.63 your enemy is often your neighbor. 00:26:14.64\00:26:16.08 Who is my neighbor? 00:26:20.83\00:26:21.97 Well, Jesus then illustrates with a parable. 00:26:21.98\00:26:24.76 A certain man will identify in a moment, 00:26:24.77\00:26:27.50 he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho 00:26:27.51\00:26:31.44 and he fell among thieves who stripped him of his clothing, 00:26:31.45\00:26:36.14 wounded him and departed leaving him half dead. 00:26:36.15\00:26:41.08 Now here Christ begins to relate an actual event 00:26:41.09\00:26:43.91 and it's filled with significance, it. 00:26:43.92\00:26:45.21 it's an allegory of salvation. 00:26:45.22\00:26:46.88 This man is going from Jerusalem, 00:26:46.89\00:26:48.45 that's the place of worship, Jerusalem, 00:26:48.46\00:26:51.34 city of peace down to Jericho that was a city 00:26:51.35\00:26:54.08 that was cursed by Joshua. 00:26:54.09\00:26:56.98 He's going from the mountains to the valley, 00:26:56.99\00:27:00.98 from above sea level to below sea level, 00:27:00.99\00:27:03.30 from the city of God, from the church to Vegas, 00:27:03.31\00:27:06.38 that's what it amounts to. 00:27:06.39\00:27:09.19 Jericho was were all- that's where 00:27:09.20\00:27:10.81 Zacchaeus had headquarters, right? 00:27:10.82\00:27:13.19 The chief of the publicans is where all the caravans stopped. 00:27:13.20\00:27:16.62 Ah, there was one perpetual hoot and he going down in Jericho. 00:27:16.63\00:27:22.79 And he's got his back to God, 00:27:22.80\00:27:24.86 maybe he has been raised in the church 00:27:24.87\00:27:27.74 and he's on his way from the place of worship down 00:27:27.75\00:27:31.94 and on his way he falls among thieves. 00:27:31.95\00:27:36.39 The Bible says the devil is a thief and a robber, 00:27:36.40\00:27:40.38 who beat him half to death, strip him, 00:27:40.39\00:27:44.27 one reason they take his clothing 00:27:44.28\00:27:46.30 is because of course clothing is a symbol 00:27:46.31\00:27:48.38 for righteousness in the Bible. 00:27:48.39\00:27:50.93 The devil after he met Adam and Eve, 00:27:50.94\00:27:52.60 he left them naked too, didn't he? 00:27:52.61\00:27:56.34 People used to hide their money in their clothes. 00:27:56.35\00:27:59.51 I have a friend who's a thief in Chihuahua, Mexico. 00:27:59.52\00:28:02.90 He was baptized after that, 00:28:02.91\00:28:05.61 but he said when he robbed people 00:28:05.62\00:28:06.78 he'd also takes their clothes from them 00:28:06.79\00:28:08.10 for a couple of reasons, 00:28:08.11\00:28:09.13 one they were less inclined to chase after him. 00:28:09.14\00:28:12.97 Two, they often hid their money in their clothes. 00:28:12.98\00:28:15.77 Bible times, they did not carry credit cards, 00:28:15.78\00:28:18.31 it was not a cashless society and so you, 00:28:18.32\00:28:20.48 people would sow their money 00:28:20.49\00:28:21.75 in different parts of their clothing, 00:28:21.76\00:28:23.01 so they took their clothes. 00:28:23.02\00:28:24.82 So here's this man, he's laying there virtually naked, 00:28:24.83\00:28:27.83 severely wounded, he cannot help himself 00:28:27.84\00:28:30.93 and he's dying, he's fallen. 00:28:30.94\00:28:35.29 You know the Bible describes 00:28:35.30\00:28:37.28 the condition of man as the fall. 00:28:37.29\00:28:39.64 Adam and Eve fell. 00:28:39.65\00:28:43.41 And so into this situation some players wonder 00:28:43.42\00:28:48.73 and as we read on, it tells us. 00:28:48.74\00:28:50.72 Now by chance, 00:28:50.73\00:28:51.92 I think this is an example of Jesus incorporating humor 00:28:51.93\00:28:54.16 because nothing happens by chance 00:28:54.17\00:28:55.89 with God, the irony of it. 00:28:55.90\00:28:59.62 Now by chance, a certain priest came down the road 00:28:59.63\00:29:02.51 and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 00:29:02.52\00:29:09.63 Now you can't really blame him that much. 00:29:09.64\00:29:14.40 Have you ever gotten to this scene of a crime 00:29:14.41\00:29:16.68 or someone who has just been mugged? 00:29:16.69\00:29:19.01 And you can see that it is just happened. 00:29:19.02\00:29:21.50 instinctively, one of the natural responses is, 00:29:21.51\00:29:24.49 this is a recent crime, the perpetrator is not far away 00:29:24.50\00:29:28.27 which means I could be next. 00:29:28.28\00:29:31.22 And the priest seeing that he looked around, 00:29:31.23\00:29:34.51 he thought I'm going to get out of here, 00:29:34.52\00:29:35.61 I'm going to skid out, 00:29:35.62\00:29:37.97 so he wasn't as concerned 00:29:37.98\00:29:39.59 with his friend's injury as his own welfare. 00:29:39.60\00:29:44.46 He would not risk himself for even 00:29:44.47\00:29:46.12 one of his own church members. 00:29:46.13\00:29:47.96 This is a priest whose job was to shepherd the flock 00:29:47.97\00:29:54.54 and really all he thinks about it, it's his own interest. 00:29:54.55\00:29:59.64 Well, our son Daniel is in the Marines by his choice 00:29:59.65\00:30:05.47 and praise God he was in Iraq 00:30:05.48\00:30:07.89 and he made it safely back from Iraq. 00:30:07.90\00:30:10.34 Couple of weeks ago, we went camping together, 00:30:10.35\00:30:13.10 isn't that terrible? 00:30:13.11\00:30:14.21 He comes back from spending months in the desert of Iraq 00:30:14.22\00:30:16.51 and I take him camping in the desert. 00:30:16.52\00:30:19.82 Ah, dad, you wanna go camping? 00:30:19.83\00:30:21.22 Oh, sure, where are you going? 00:30:21.23\00:30:22.75 We're going off to desert. 00:30:22.76\00:30:24.87 We gonna ride around on four wheelers 00:30:24.88\00:30:26.18 and he's you know, he's a driver 00:30:26.19\00:30:27.31 of one of these six by sixes in Iraq. 00:30:27.32\00:30:29.43 Anyway, you know, he was telling us some stories 00:30:29.44\00:30:31.75 and one of the things if they beat 00:30:31.76\00:30:34.86 into the marines is not only, 00:30:34.87\00:30:38.21 you know, learning how to defend yourself 00:30:38.22\00:30:39.65 and operate your weapons, 00:30:39.66\00:30:41.05 but they, they hammer into the marines a heroic attitude. 00:30:41.06\00:30:45.93 Some of the marines behave as heroes 00:30:45.94\00:30:47.86 not because they're heroes but 00:30:47.87\00:30:48.86 but because they are very thoroughly programmed 00:30:48.87\00:30:51.35 that if your buddy is hurt, 00:30:51.36\00:30:52.63 even if you get killed, you go get him. 00:30:52.64\00:30:56.03 They're trained to sacrifice to save each other. 00:30:56.04\00:30:59.28 They don't even think twice. 00:30:59.29\00:31:02.24 With God, that we all felt that way for our brothers. 00:31:02.25\00:31:06.03 Often Christians will leave the wounded behind 00:31:06.04\00:31:09.60 because we're more concerned about ourselves 00:31:09.61\00:31:11.20 or its inconvenient. 00:31:11.21\00:31:13.92 So the priest, he even changes lanes 00:31:13.93\00:31:18.08 when he passes, barely glances in rear view mirror. 00:31:18.09\00:31:22.47 It could also be, I'm not sure 00:31:22.48\00:31:24.65 it doesn't tell us but you know 00:31:24.66\00:31:26.33 the religious leaders in Jesus day, 00:31:26.34\00:31:28.71 actually believed that bad things happen to bad people 00:31:28.72\00:31:33.12 because they're getting what they deserve. 00:31:33.13\00:31:35.79 And he may have been thinking 00:31:35.80\00:31:36.99 well, I don't want to interfere with providence 00:31:37.00\00:31:39.14 because this man may, he probably did something wrong 00:31:39.15\00:31:41.79 and his Karma's catching up with him 00:31:41.80\00:31:43.53 and if God wants to save him, God will save him. 00:31:43.54\00:31:46.61 But this is the providence of God, 00:31:46.62\00:31:47.98 so he goes on down the road. 00:31:47.99\00:31:50.32 Then the next character comes 00:31:50.33\00:31:51.91 and Jesus goes on to say, likewise a Levite, 00:31:51.92\00:31:55.35 verse 32, when he arrived at the place, 00:31:55.36\00:31:58.01 he came and he looked, he evidently paused, 00:31:58.02\00:32:02.95 but then he passes by on the other side. 00:32:02.96\00:32:05.11 He at least stopped and probably offered a prayer. 00:32:05.12\00:32:09.00 Well, this is terrible? How did this happen? 00:32:09.01\00:32:14.44 You know, I'm ruing the day that I ended up 00:32:14.45\00:32:20.39 in the city of Sacramento because I hate traffic. 00:32:20.40\00:32:23.88 You know, I came from-- 00:32:23.89\00:32:24.88 Karen and I was pastoring a church 00:32:24.89\00:32:26.16 with the hundred members in Covelo, population 15. 00:32:26.17\00:32:31.44 You heard of a one horse town, 00:32:31.45\00:32:34.17 Covelo's horse didn't have a saddle, 00:32:34.18\00:32:36.90 little town, people stop in the middle of road 00:32:36.91\00:32:39.06 and visit with each other and just drive around. 00:32:39.07\00:32:41.27 You ever have been in towns like that? 00:32:41.28\00:32:44.07 Then you go to Sacramento, they get 24 hour day 00:32:44.08\00:32:46.19 traffic reports and so often interstate five 00:32:46.20\00:32:49.55 and interstate 80 get clocked and you think 00:32:49.56\00:32:51.68 oh, there's must some accident up there 00:32:51.69\00:32:53.21 and somebody is off the road changing the tyre. 00:32:53.22\00:32:56.81 And everybody slows down and call it 00:32:56.82\00:32:58.26 rubbernecking, you know what I am talking about. 00:32:58.27\00:33:00.70 Everyone slows down, it's like we, 00:33:00.71\00:33:02.60 we offer the salute of sympathy, 00:33:02.61\00:33:06.22 oh, should be glad it's not me, 00:33:06.23\00:33:07.92 so we slow down out of respect. 00:33:07.93\00:33:11.60 We think there's some virtue at looking at somebody 00:33:11.61\00:33:14.20 who's suffering instead of doing anything for them. 00:33:14.21\00:33:16.87 Oh, sorry. 00:33:16.88\00:33:18.97 But we all slow down it's not implied to drive quickly 00:33:18.98\00:33:21.82 by somebody who's broken down. 00:33:21.83\00:33:26.67 You know, I'm really concerned about something 00:33:26.68\00:33:29.21 I have seen happened to me. 00:33:29.22\00:33:32.09 When I first became a Christian, I was very sympathetic 00:33:32.10\00:33:36.16 and empathetic about hitchhikers because see, 00:33:36.17\00:33:39.55 I spent many, many hours, probably days standing 00:33:39.56\00:33:44.80 in the side of the road begging for a ride. 00:33:44.81\00:33:48.60 Anyone out there, done this before. 00:33:48.61\00:33:52.91 No, I'm not telling you to feel bad 00:33:52.92\00:33:54.94 for not picking up hitchhikers 00:33:54.95\00:33:56.22 but I remember making some foolish vows 00:33:56.23\00:33:58.68 where I'd be there eight hours 00:33:58.69\00:33:59.77 and I'd pray for a ride, and I say Lord, 00:33:59.78\00:34:01.66 if you give my ide, I promise if I ever get a car, 00:34:01.67\00:34:04.31 I'll pick up every hitchhiker I see. 00:34:04.32\00:34:07.53 Be careful what you promise. 00:34:07.54\00:34:08.77 Let me just tell you right now. 00:34:08.78\00:34:12.18 But you know, I've tried after I got my first car, 00:34:12.19\00:34:14.67 I'd get to an on ramp on some interstate, 00:34:14.68\00:34:16.90 there'll be 12 people there in Southern California 00:34:16.91\00:34:18.88 asking for a ride, I'd try getting them 00:34:18.89\00:34:20.32 all with their dog in my Volkswagen. 00:34:20.33\00:34:22.73 Well, I mean, I really cared back then 00:34:22.74\00:34:25.13 because I knew how it's felt. 00:34:25.14\00:34:26.50 I empathize with them. 00:34:26.51\00:34:29.05 But then as the Lord blessed, and I got better cars 00:34:29.06\00:34:32.39 I became more discriminating. 00:34:32.40\00:34:36.18 And I started being more selective in who I've picked up. 00:34:36.19\00:34:38.53 Well I am not going very far, 00:34:38.54\00:34:40.09 you know, it doesn't make sense to pick them up, 00:34:40.10\00:34:41.82 or that guy doesn't look like he's had a bath in a while 00:34:41.83\00:34:44.55 and this upholstery is still clean. 00:34:44.56\00:34:46.20 And then I got to where I have been in a hurry 00:34:49.25\00:34:50.89 and I would say well, I don' t have time to pick him up 00:34:50.90\00:34:52.44 but I'll pray for him as I go by. 00:34:52.45\00:34:55.43 "Lord, please give him a ride". 00:34:55.44\00:34:58.80 So like James said, you pray be warmed and filled 00:34:58.81\00:35:01.78 and you don't do anything practical for their needs, 00:35:01.79\00:35:04.00 so maybe the Levite stopped and he prayed and said, 00:35:04.01\00:35:06.43 look I've got your license, 00:35:06.44\00:35:07.64 I'll call 888 when I get to Jericho 00:35:07.65\00:35:10.90 but he didn't do anything. 00:35:10.91\00:35:13.61 Now after two of the most prominent church members 00:35:13.62\00:35:16.30 go by this man and they don't help. 00:35:16.31\00:35:19.21 Put yourself in his shoes for a minute? 00:35:19.22\00:35:21.98 He's laying there, struggling to breathe, broken ribs, 00:35:21.99\00:35:26.31 one eye swollen shut, maybe broken bones, 00:35:26.32\00:35:29.86 they beat him half to death, half dead, 00:35:29.87\00:35:31.93 that describes the sinner. 00:35:31.94\00:35:34.96 We have fallen among thieves, we have been stripped, 00:35:34.97\00:35:37.32 we've gonna robbed, we'r half dead 00:35:37.33\00:35:38.82 and we're dying. 00:35:38.83\00:35:40.07 We're under a death sentence. 00:35:40.08\00:35:42.39 He's laying there, probably praying 00:35:42.40\00:35:46.17 and then he sees the pastor come by 00:35:46.18\00:35:48.71 and he thinks praise the Lord and he keeps going. 00:35:48.72\00:35:54.93 And then he's dehydrated, his lips are parched, 00:35:54.94\00:35:57.32 he sees the birds are just starting to circle 00:35:57.33\00:36:01.40 and then the Levite comes by. 00:36:01.41\00:36:03.09 Oh, praise the Lord and he stops, 00:36:03.10\00:36:05.12 ha, come on and he keeps going, 00:36:05.13\00:36:08.47 See he offer him a prayer, but he keeps going. 00:36:08.48\00:36:13.25 Then it says a certain Samaritan, 00:36:13.26\00:36:15.49 now I've got to stop you, 00:36:15.50\00:36:16.55 you have to understand this. 00:36:16.56\00:36:20.37 It's an understatement to say that Samaritans 00:36:20.38\00:36:23.26 and Jews did not like each other. 00:36:23.27\00:36:27.12 Think Palestinian and Israelite and that's still doesn't cover. 00:36:27.13\00:36:32.82 If you were a religious Jew and you lost your temper, 00:36:32.83\00:36:36.12 you wanted to curse someone out, 00:36:36.13\00:36:37.71 you would say, you publican, 00:36:37.72\00:36:40.97 you demon-possessed Samaritan, 00:36:40.98\00:36:44.51 and then people would go ooh, 00:36:44.52\00:36:46.60 he told it, that's the one of the worst things you could do. 00:36:46.61\00:36:49.15 It was so bad in the time of Christ 00:36:49.16\00:36:52.61 that the religious leaders had a law 00:36:52.62\00:36:54.30 that if the shadow of a Samaritan fell on you, 00:36:54.31\00:36:57.36 you're unclean. 00:36:57.37\00:36:58.36 That's why, the apostles, they said to Jesus, 00:36:58.37\00:37:03.79 when they were going through Sychar, they said, 00:37:03.80\00:37:05.50 "you stay here by the well, 00:37:05.51\00:37:06.64 we've got to go through the Samaritan town 00:37:06.65\00:37:08.21 and we've got to buy some food, 00:37:08.22\00:37:09.35 but we don't want you to risk contamination." 00:37:09.36\00:37:12.95 And they come back, and he's talking 00:37:12.96\00:37:14.10 to a Samaritan women no less. 00:37:14.11\00:37:17.01 Her shadow well over him. 00:37:17.02\00:37:20.50 I can see it now in some Samaritan village 00:37:20.51\00:37:22.37 when the Jews went shopping about 5:00 in the afternoon, 00:37:22.38\00:37:24.43 they probably had a good time, 00:37:24.44\00:37:25.47 huh, huh, get to shadow. 00:37:25.48\00:37:26.47 And the Jews are trying to stay clean. 00:37:28.84\00:37:30.88 They're hating each other 00:37:30.89\00:37:32.58 and they would never miss an opportunity 00:37:32.59\00:37:35.04 to get even or to hurt someone. 00:37:35.05\00:37:39.08 Constant terrorism going on 00:37:39.09\00:37:40.75 between the Samaritans and the Jews. 00:37:40.76\00:37:42.87 And then it says here in the story, 00:37:42.88\00:37:47.00 but a certain Samaritan as he journey came to where he was. 00:37:47.01\00:37:50.81 Now can you picture this? 00:37:50.82\00:37:53.23 That man's laying there buzzards are closing their circle, 00:37:53.24\00:37:56.13 he's drifting in and out of consciousness. 00:37:56.14\00:37:59.02 The head elder and the pastor have gone by 00:37:59.03\00:38:01.68 and he's praying. 00:38:01.69\00:38:02.92 And around the bend comes 00:38:02.93\00:38:04.25 a Samaritan with his donkey, 00:38:04.26\00:38:06.42 no witnesses and this Samaritan stops. 00:38:06.43\00:38:11.13 He probably looks to the right, left wondering 00:38:11.14\00:38:12.71 where the thieves are and this wounded man thinks 00:38:12.72\00:38:14.71 he was wondering will there be any witnesses, 00:38:14.72\00:38:17.20 I'm gonna finish him off. 00:38:17.21\00:38:19.58 And he thinks this is not good 00:38:19.59\00:38:22.36 and as the Samaritan comes up to the man, 00:38:22.37\00:38:24.73 he's probably trying to crawl away with all those strength 00:38:24.74\00:38:26.62 he's got left, groaning, but listen to what it says, 00:38:26.63\00:38:29.97 he doesn't hurt him. 00:38:29.98\00:38:31.12 It says when he saw him, he had compassion on him. 00:38:33.98\00:38:40.77 You know what compassion is? 00:38:40.78\00:38:43.14 It's combined with the word pathos, 00:38:43.15\00:38:46.76 feeling for empathy, sympathy. 00:38:46.77\00:38:52.48 Compassion is not the same as pity. 00:38:52.49\00:38:54.31 When the Levite stopped and offered a prayer that was pity. 00:38:54.32\00:38:58.19 Compassion is different. 00:38:58.20\00:39:00.90 I like to use the illustration, it's true story. 00:39:00.91\00:39:02.99 There was an accident in San Francisco 00:39:03.00\00:39:06.28 where a trolley car pinned a pedestrian. 00:39:06.29\00:39:10.53 And all these crowd of rubberneckers 00:39:10.54\00:39:12.74 stopped to look and this man was caught 00:39:12.75\00:39:15.51 underneath the chassis, greasy street car 00:39:15.52\00:39:19.94 and he was bleeding and he was injured. 00:39:19.95\00:39:22.60 Then some people leaned over 00:39:22.61\00:39:23.81 and looked underneath and said 00:39:23.82\00:39:24.83 we called for the emergency vehicles, help is on the way. 00:39:24.84\00:39:28.58 Some even got down on their hands and knees 00:39:28.59\00:39:31.31 and they looked at the man, keep an eye on him. 00:39:31.32\00:39:33.78 He's there trembling, one man in a business suit 00:39:33.79\00:39:37.28 got down on his belly and did the combat crawl, 00:39:37.29\00:39:40.87 went underneath the greasy chassis of this truck, 00:39:40.88\00:39:43.44 got right up to the man's ear, put his hand on him 00:39:43.45\00:39:47.16 and said in his ear, I'm gonna stay here with you, 00:39:47.17\00:39:50.52 you're going to be okay and someone illustrated 00:39:50.53\00:39:53.75 this is the difference between pity and compassion. 00:39:53.76\00:39:57.89 Pity looks down, compassion gets down. 00:39:57.90\00:40:02.65 I'm so thankful that Jesus did not just look down 00:40:02.66\00:40:05.39 at our world that was lost but He got down, 00:40:05.40\00:40:07.60 He became one of us to save us. 00:40:07.61\00:40:09.61 The Bible says He went to him, light shown in the prison, 00:40:09.62\00:40:13.91 God comes to us in our lost condition. 00:40:13.92\00:40:16.36 He does not wait for us to save ourselves, 00:40:16.37\00:40:18.60 He comes to us when we're helpless. 00:40:18.61\00:40:21.58 He went to him. 00:40:21.59\00:40:24.01 And He goes on to say, 00:40:24.02\00:40:27.47 he bandaged his wounds, 00:40:27.48\00:40:30.82 pouring on oil and wine 00:40:30.83\00:40:33.53 and he set him on his own animal. 00:40:33.54\00:40:35.63 I want to pause. Those are all symbols. 00:40:35.64\00:40:37.41 First of all you know who the thief is. 00:40:37.42\00:40:40.67 Who's the thief in the story? 00:40:40.68\00:40:42.75 Say, who is the man that fell among thieves? 00:40:42.76\00:40:47.94 Me? You? 00:40:47.95\00:40:51.08 Have you been beat up by the devil? 00:40:51.09\00:40:52.86 Has he wounded you? Have you fallen? 00:40:52.87\00:40:57.26 You know the Bible says 00:40:57.27\00:40:58.26 he's able to keep you from fallen, 00:40:58.27\00:41:00.19 but we've all fallen. 00:41:00.20\00:41:02.60 Has he stripped you of your dignity, your righteousness? 00:41:02.61\00:41:06.31 All of us are like filthy rags, left half dead, 00:41:06.32\00:41:09.66 we're under a death sentence. 00:41:09.67\00:41:12.21 And then who is the good Samaritan, that's Jesus. 00:41:12.22\00:41:16.27 See, Samaritans were hated by the Jews 00:41:16.28\00:41:18.21 because they were part Jewish. 00:41:18.22\00:41:20.28 They embrace some of the Jewish religion 00:41:20.29\00:41:22.06 and then they had some relation, 00:41:22.07\00:41:23.92 some of the blood of the ten tribes 00:41:23.93\00:41:25.61 mingled with the Syrian blood, 00:41:25.62\00:41:27.28 they were sort of half breeds. 00:41:27.29\00:41:30.67 And you know, that's what Jesus is. 00:41:30.68\00:41:32.42 Except Jesus isn't 50-50, 00:41:32.43\00:41:33.82 Jesus is a 100 percent God and 100 percent man. 00:41:33.83\00:41:36.76 I can't comprehend it friends, 00:41:36.77\00:41:38.00 but that's what the Bible teaches. 00:41:38.01\00:41:41.14 And He says now, he bandages his wounds, 00:41:41.15\00:41:43.62 you think he had a first aid box on his donkey, 00:41:43.63\00:41:46.94 you know, what I think he did, 00:41:46.95\00:41:48.61 He took His own clothing and He ripped into strips, 00:41:48.62\00:41:51.95 a symbol of the righteousness of Christ. 00:41:51.96\00:41:55.44 He poured him the wine, 00:41:55.45\00:41:57.49 a symbol of the blood of the covenant, 00:41:57.50\00:41:59.86 and the oil, symbol of the Holy Spirit. 00:41:59.87\00:42:04.06 And the man then was too weak to propel himself, 00:42:04.07\00:42:07.71 so He puts Him on his own beast, 00:42:07.72\00:42:09.13 the beast in the Bible is the symbol of strength, 00:42:09.14\00:42:11.60 through the strength of the ox, 00:42:11.61\00:42:13.60 there is much in grace. 00:42:13.61\00:42:16.58 And then He takes him to the inn. 00:42:16.59\00:42:18.89 What do you think the inn would represent? 00:42:18.90\00:42:22.33 It's a church. 00:42:22.34\00:42:23.38 After the Lord saves people, He takes them to the inn. 00:42:23.39\00:42:26.00 Inns, back then were not chains and franchise, 00:42:26.01\00:42:28.34 they were mom and pop organizations. 00:42:28.35\00:42:31.19 They were cottage industries. 00:42:31.20\00:42:33.95 Suppose to be like a family, takes him to the inn. 00:42:33.96\00:42:36.69 He personally cares for him, He gets him stabilized 00:42:36.70\00:42:41.17 and then He commits the care of this man 00:42:41.18\00:42:44.36 to the innkeeper and his family. 00:42:44.37\00:42:47.30 You know, Jesus discipled us in how to reach others 00:42:47.31\00:42:51.22 and He said As the Father sent me, so send thy you. 00:42:51.23\00:42:54.54 Now I've given you out an example, 00:42:54.55\00:42:55.73 I've got you started, I'm going, 00:42:55.74\00:42:57.04 I'll send the Holy Spirit, you take care of him. 00:42:57.05\00:43:00.53 This is the whole story of the Gospel here, amen. Amen. 00:43:00.54\00:43:03.68 And then you know what He says to the innkeeper. 00:43:03.69\00:43:07.30 No, I don't want to tell you that yet. 00:43:07.31\00:43:09.93 I want to focus on this point. 00:43:09.94\00:43:11.52 Matthew Chapter 25, you don't have to turn, 00:43:16.80\00:43:20.16 trust me it's there. 00:43:20.17\00:43:24.12 In the great judgment day, Jesus said He separates, 00:43:24.13\00:43:29.15 the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats 00:43:29.16\00:43:32.17 and He declares to the save the sheep, 00:43:32.18\00:43:34.71 I was hungry and You fed me, 00:43:34.72\00:43:36.83 I was thirsty, You gave me drink, 00:43:36.84\00:43:39.02 I was naked and You clothe me, 00:43:39.03\00:43:41.25 I was a stranger and You took me in, 00:43:41.26\00:43:43.40 I was sick or in prison and You came to me 00:43:43.41\00:43:46.04 and they'll say Lord, 00:43:46.05\00:43:47.05 when did we see You in this conditions. 00:43:47.06\00:43:49.46 He says as much as you did it 00:43:49.47\00:43:50.78 to one of the least of these you did it to Me. 00:43:50.79\00:43:54.67 You notice, he doesn't say enter into the joy of the Lord, 00:43:54.68\00:43:57.47 because you kept all my commandments. 00:43:57.48\00:43:59.98 How do they show they're keeping His commandments, 00:43:59.99\00:44:01.88 by the loving their fellowmen. 00:44:01.89\00:44:04.58 Then he declares to the lost. 00:44:04.59\00:44:06.34 I was hungry, you didn't feed me, 00:44:06.35\00:44:07.54 I was thirsty, you didn't give me drink, 00:44:07.55\00:44:09.22 I was naked or stranger or in prison or sick 00:44:09.23\00:44:12.78 and you did not minister on to me 00:44:12.79\00:44:14.45 and they'll say Lord, when. 00:44:14.46\00:44:15.82 He said and as much as you did not do it 00:44:15.83\00:44:17.71 to the least of these my brethren, 00:44:17.72\00:44:18.93 you did not do it me. 00:44:18.94\00:44:20.64 Depart in everlasting fire, 00:44:20.65\00:44:22.43 prepared for the devils and his angels. 00:44:22.44\00:44:25.83 We're going to be judged by how we love each other. 00:44:25.84\00:44:27.31 Now look at these six conditions that are described, 00:44:27.32\00:44:30.07 I was hungry, not only should Christians feed the hungry, 00:44:30.08\00:44:33.04 yeah, that means one-o-one, do we not know that? 00:44:33.05\00:44:36.31 But I gave you the bread of life. 00:44:36.32\00:44:39.66 I was thirsty, now like I should be kept 00:44:39.67\00:44:42.70 water to the thirsty, 00:44:42.71\00:44:43.74 that's so basic even the Pagans do that. 00:44:43.75\00:44:45.99 But we give them the living water. 00:44:46.00\00:44:49.87 I was naked and you gave me his robe of righteousness. 00:44:49.88\00:44:53.85 I was alienated from God, 00:44:53.86\00:44:55.23 I was a stranger and you made atonement, 00:44:55.24\00:44:57.37 you brought me to Him. 00:44:57.38\00:44:59.27 I was in prison by sin and you liberated me 00:44:59.28\00:45:02.34 through the Gospel that unlocks out chains. 00:45:02.35\00:45:05.71 I was sick, sin is described as a sickness 00:45:05.72\00:45:08.47 from the crown of the head to the sole of the foot 00:45:08.48\00:45:10.42 we're full of wounds and bruises 00:45:10.43\00:45:12.32 and putrefying sores, it's nauseating, 00:45:12.33\00:45:15.79 it's a sickness and we got the balm of Gilead, amen. 00:45:15.80\00:45:20.82 This is describing the ministry of the church 00:45:20.83\00:45:22.71 but it's more than that. 00:45:22.72\00:45:24.44 Those six conditions there 00:45:24.45\00:45:26.25 described the suffering of Jesus. 00:45:26.26\00:45:29.88 When Christ was on the cross, 00:45:29.89\00:45:31.16 he took all the suffering of humanity. 00:45:31.17\00:45:33.90 Was He hungry? Hadn't eaten in 24 hours. 00:45:33.91\00:45:37.49 Most of us don't go that long, do we? 00:45:37.50\00:45:40.41 Was He thirsty? He said He was. 00:45:40.42\00:45:44.67 Was he sick? 00:45:44.68\00:45:46.69 See how you feel after crucifixion 00:45:46.70\00:45:48.41 and being whipped with a cat of nine-tails 39 times twice, 00:45:48.42\00:45:53.13 beaten by soldiers. 00:45:53.14\00:45:56.71 Was He a stranger? 00:45:56.72\00:45:58.30 He came on to His own and they didn't know. 00:45:58.31\00:46:03.15 Was He in prison? 00:46:03.16\00:46:05.37 Can you imagine more perfect example of being in prison 00:46:05.38\00:46:08.70 and being suspended between heaven and earth 00:46:08.71\00:46:11.10 and nailed by your feet and your hands? 00:46:11.11\00:46:14.41 When Jesus was hanging on the cross, 00:46:14.42\00:46:16.75 He embraced all the suffering of humanity. 00:46:16.76\00:46:19.60 And He said as much as you have done it on to one 00:46:19.61\00:46:21.44 of the least of these, you have done it to me. 00:46:21.45\00:46:22.80 Think about this for a second. I'm almost done. 00:46:22.81\00:46:24.89 God is omnipresent, God is omnipotent, 00:46:30.11\00:46:35.28 God is all knowing omniscient. 00:46:35.29\00:46:37.77 I would like to add one sub category if you will allow me. 00:46:37.78\00:46:40.87 God is omnipathic, because God knows everything, 00:46:40.88\00:46:47.07 He feels everything. 00:46:47.08\00:46:49.84 Now another government tells us 00:46:49.85\00:46:50.91 that they feel our pain, right. 00:46:50.92\00:46:53.17 I have serious doubts about that. 00:46:53.18\00:46:57.88 But if God knows everything. 00:46:57.89\00:47:00.93 Does he know everything, everything? 00:47:00.94\00:47:03.14 Is there anything He doesn't know? 00:47:03.15\00:47:04.86 Is He aware of every tingling of every nerve, 00:47:04.87\00:47:08.20 fiber on the end of every hair on your body? 00:47:08.21\00:47:11.39 Does He feel when the sparrows are hungry?
