We're talking about recovery. 00:01:01.94\00:01:04.43 Isn't that what the Christian walk is all about? 00:01:04.44\00:01:07.37 It's all about recovery and renewal and revival 00:01:07.38\00:01:14.60 and refreshment in God. 00:01:14.61\00:01:18.03 And probably one of the nearest stories of recovery 00:01:18.04\00:01:20.56 in the Bible is the story of Peter. 00:01:20.57\00:01:24.18 Remember when Peter-- 00:01:24.19\00:01:25.53 what fabulous feat did Peter do 00:01:25.54\00:01:28.74 that nobody else had done. 00:01:28.75\00:01:32.09 He walked on water, didn't he? 00:01:32.10\00:01:34.03 He walked on water. 00:01:34.04\00:01:35.33 Wouldn't you love to walk on water? 00:01:35.34\00:01:36.87 What a miracle? 00:01:36.88\00:01:38.12 Well, if you remember the story, 00:01:38.13\00:01:39.63 it's in Matthew Chapter 14. 00:01:39.64\00:01:42.84 They went on the boat, Jesus sent them away 00:01:42.85\00:01:45.38 and they went off by themselves on this boat 00:01:45.39\00:01:49.11 and what happened to the winds? 00:01:49.12\00:01:51.98 They became contrary the Bible says 00:01:51.99\00:01:55.64 and all they were in so trouble 00:01:55.65\00:01:57.48 and they needed Jesus. 00:01:57.49\00:02:00.60 And Jesus came to them. 00:02:00.61\00:02:04.19 But did he come in the way that they expected? No. 00:02:04.20\00:02:09.57 When they saw Jesus walking on the water, 00:02:09.58\00:02:12.12 what did they say? 00:02:12.13\00:02:14.50 It's a ghost! It's a ghost! 00:02:14.51\00:02:19.50 And you know it makes me think of us sometimes, 00:02:19.51\00:02:21.81 it makes me think of myself, 00:02:21.82\00:02:23.09 sometimes we'll ask the Lord for help. 00:02:23.10\00:02:25.68 We'll say, Lord, I'm in trouble. 00:02:25.69\00:02:28.12 My brain is dull and weary, I feel depressed everyday, 00:02:28.13\00:02:32.23 I don't have energy, please help me, Lord. 00:02:32.24\00:02:37.36 And the Lord comes. 00:02:37.37\00:02:39.45 He sends somebody to you. 00:02:39.46\00:02:41.80 That says you know brother, you know sister, 00:02:41.81\00:02:45.15 lifestyle has a lot to do with the way 00:02:45.16\00:02:47.07 you're feeling right now. 00:02:47.08\00:02:49.08 It's a ghost! Get out of here! 00:02:49.09\00:02:53.44 I'm asking for Jesus, not you. 00:02:53.45\00:02:56.03 Jesus comes to us in ways that we don't expect, doesn't he? 00:02:58.79\00:03:02.60 We have to be listening to his voice 00:03:02.61\00:03:04.97 in every quarter and in every season 00:03:04.98\00:03:08.78 to see what He has to say for us. 00:03:08.79\00:03:09.98 Sometimes He uses people, circumstances, 00:03:09.99\00:03:12.64 the word of God, the Holy Spirit, 00:03:12.65\00:03:14.10 lots of different ways. 00:03:14.11\00:03:15.52 The worst way that I--I dislike learning. 00:03:15.53\00:03:21.57 The worst way to learn 00:03:21.58\00:03:22.62 is to be pulled through a keyhole 00:03:22.63\00:03:24.89 and the Lord will do this if He has to. 00:03:24.90\00:03:27.43 Because He loves us and He wants to bless us. 00:03:27.44\00:03:30.54 But the interesting thing about the story, 00:03:30.55\00:03:32.02 I've meditated on it 00:03:32.03\00:03:33.02 because my husband does a wonderful sermon 00:03:33.03\00:03:34.72 on this story and he shared some points 00:03:34.73\00:03:36.30 that I'm gonna share with you 00:03:36.31\00:03:37.30 this morning as we get started. 00:03:37.31\00:03:39.82 Peter finally recognized that it was Jesus, 00:03:39.83\00:03:42.16 and what did he say? 00:03:42.17\00:03:44.89 Ask me to come to you, if it's you. 00:03:44.90\00:03:49.14 And so what did Peter do? 00:03:49.15\00:03:51.80 He jumped out of that boat on to the water 00:03:51.81\00:03:55.70 and he saw the Lord 00:03:55.71\00:03:57.53 and he started walking toward Him, didn't he? 00:03:57.54\00:04:01.06 And then he saw that the waves were contrary 00:04:01.07\00:04:04.39 and the billows were high 00:04:04.40\00:04:06.20 and he took his eyes off Jesus, and what happened? 00:04:06.21\00:04:10.35 He started to-- He started to sink. 00:04:10.36\00:04:15.09 And what did he cry out? 00:04:15.10\00:04:17.32 Lord, save me! Lord, save me! 00:04:17.33\00:04:21.27 And what did Jesus do? 00:04:21.28\00:04:23.58 Swallow a few more gobs of salt water, 00:04:23.59\00:04:26.53 Peter, then I'll get you. 00:04:26.54\00:04:30.98 Don't we do that with each other sometimes? 00:04:30.99\00:04:33.74 That serves him right. 00:04:33.75\00:04:36.25 Peter starts to sink. 00:04:36.26\00:04:38.24 And what did Jesus do right away? 00:04:38.25\00:04:40.88 He reaches down and He pulls him up, 00:04:40.89\00:04:44.76 He pulls him up. 00:04:44.77\00:04:45.81 Now this is the amazing thing about the story. 00:04:45.82\00:04:48.35 The rescue is more dramatic than the initial miracle 00:04:48.36\00:04:53.57 because now Jesus is holding Himself up 00:04:53.58\00:04:56.78 and Peter on that water. 00:04:56.79\00:05:01.01 And He says the most unusual thing to Peter, 00:05:01.02\00:05:03.64 what does He say? 00:05:03.65\00:05:05.87 He says, "O thou of little faith, 00:05:05.88\00:05:09.70 why did you doubt? Why did you doubt?" 00:05:09.71\00:05:14.00 That's an amazing statement when you think about it. 00:05:14.01\00:05:16.25 Where were the other 11 disciples? 00:05:16.26\00:05:19.55 They were in the boat rowing. 00:05:19.56\00:05:22.24 Peter was out walking on water. 00:05:22.25\00:05:26.24 What a really unusual kind of thing to say 00:05:26.25\00:05:29.76 to someone that had just manifested so much faith. 00:05:29.77\00:05:34.29 And here's what I think the reason is. 00:05:34.30\00:05:37.62 Jesus says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, 00:05:37.63\00:05:40.15 I am the beginning and the end, 00:05:40.16\00:05:42.38 I am the author and the finisher of your faith." 00:05:42.39\00:05:46.60 Sometimes it's not just the starting 00:05:46.61\00:05:48.96 that's important, it's the finishing. 00:05:48.97\00:05:51.63 Isn't that the most important thing? 00:05:51.64\00:05:53.39 Oh, we have a lot of people starting. 00:05:53.40\00:05:55.34 We have a lot of people starting diets. 00:05:55.35\00:05:56.74 Fifty four percent of Americans 00:05:56.75\00:05:58.40 at any given minute are on their diets, 00:05:58.41\00:05:59.86 starting it is nothing. 00:05:59.87\00:06:01.49 But finishing and staying the course 00:06:01.50\00:06:03.99 that's what the Lord wants, 00:06:04.00\00:06:05.27 that's what the Lord was telling. 00:06:05.28\00:06:06.54 Peter, He says hold fast. 00:06:06.55\00:06:08.40 It says in Revelation, hold fast 00:06:08.41\00:06:11.20 to that which you have lest any man take your crown. 00:06:11.21\00:06:13.96 He that endures to the end shall be saved. 00:06:13.97\00:06:18.08 And the Bible says if you start to plow, 00:06:18.09\00:06:21.55 any man that sets his hand to the plow 00:06:21.56\00:06:24.53 and turns back, My soul will have no pleasure in him. 00:06:24.54\00:06:30.57 The lesson for you and the lesson for me 00:06:30.58\00:06:33.39 is that no matter what it takes, 00:06:33.40\00:06:35.32 no matter how many times we fall on our face, 00:06:35.33\00:06:37.66 no matter how many times the Lord has to show us 00:06:37.67\00:06:39.95 that we're more shallow and are loyalty to him 00:06:39.96\00:06:42.53 than we thought we were no matter what it takes, 00:06:42.54\00:06:44.68 Lord get me to the cross. 00:06:44.69\00:06:47.07 Get me to the cross. 00:06:47.08\00:06:48.80 Make me faithful. Sanctify me. 00:06:48.81\00:06:51.41 Make me a terror to evil, not to people, but to evil. 00:06:51.42\00:06:55.97 I wanna be in your camp, Lord, and whatever it takes, 00:06:55.98\00:06:58.89 help me to continue to recover myself 00:06:58.90\00:07:01.57 until the mistakes get fewer 00:07:01.58\00:07:03.90 and less and less and less 00:07:03.91\00:07:06.09 and I'll learn how to walk this walk with you. 00:07:06.10\00:07:08.04 Isn't that the most important thing? 00:07:08.05\00:07:09.59 Never give up. Never give up. 00:07:09.60\00:07:13.87 That to me is the message of Peter's miraculous recovery. 00:07:13.88\00:07:20.93 Today we're talking about recovery 00:07:20.94\00:07:22.48 from that addicted brain 00:07:22.49\00:07:24.10 and the healing of traumatic memories, 00:07:24.11\00:07:28.58 healing the broken brain. 00:07:28.59\00:07:29.84 What are the keys to life and to recovery? 00:07:29.85\00:07:34.31 These are the ones that I'm gonna go over with you 00:07:34.32\00:07:37.57 that I just feel are important in my own life. 00:07:37.58\00:07:39.91 I haven't done major scientific studies 00:07:39.92\00:07:42.31 or Bible exegesis on this, 00:07:42.32\00:07:45.01 but these are the practical steps that I have found. 00:07:45.02\00:07:47.82 If we take them seriously and lodge them in our hearts, 00:07:47.83\00:07:50.55 it will not only remap your brain everyday, 00:07:50.56\00:07:54.61 but it will also put you on the road 00:07:54.62\00:07:56.48 to success in your Christian life. Amen. 00:07:56.49\00:07:59.09 And you'll see the power of God that we get it. 00:07:59.10\00:08:01.24 Well, the first key to recovery is 00:08:01.25\00:08:04.00 give control to God. 00:08:04.01\00:08:07.63 That's the most important thing. 00:08:07.64\00:08:09.44 You know, we may be studying our Bibles everyday, 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.75 but if we're not willing 00:08:11.76\00:08:12.75 to give control of our lives to God, 00:08:12.76\00:08:15.45 it's fruitless, it's fruitless. 00:08:15.46\00:08:18.95 We've got to--the acronym that I uses, act. 00:08:18.96\00:08:22.82 Number one, your attitude is everything. 00:08:22.83\00:08:25.84 Do I have a surrendered attitude? 00:08:25.85\00:08:27.75 Do you have a surrendered attitude? 00:08:27.76\00:08:29.30 In every area of your life, 00:08:29.31\00:08:31.27 that's really all that matters. 00:08:31.28\00:08:34.21 Someone started to argue with me 00:08:34.22\00:08:35.51 about music styles not too long ago 00:08:35.52\00:08:38.24 and I just didn't feel like going round 00:08:38.25\00:08:39.82 and round and round, and I looked at that person 00:08:39.83\00:08:42.94 and I said, do you have a passion for the will of God? 00:08:42.95\00:08:48.43 Is it your highest passion in life to have His will 00:08:48.44\00:08:53.16 in your life in this area and in every area? 00:08:53.17\00:08:55.73 And that person stopped and said, who can be saved. 00:08:58.03\00:09:03.80 The Bible says, if the righteous scarcely be saved, 00:09:03.81\00:09:06.17 what is the end gonna be of them 00:09:06.18\00:09:07.42 that obey not the gospel? 00:09:07.43\00:09:08.56 Friends, our attitude is everything. 00:09:08.57\00:09:11.30 He knows if we're surrendered 00:09:11.31\00:09:12.65 and He's in the business of showing you 00:09:12.66\00:09:14.31 whether you're surrendered or not. 00:09:14.32\00:09:17.30 We've got to give control to God. 00:09:17.31\00:09:18.90 We've got to give Him our attitude 00:09:18.91\00:09:20.44 and then see is for change. 00:09:20.45\00:09:22.78 You've got to be willing to change, 00:09:22.79\00:09:24.85 wherever He wants you to change. 00:09:24.86\00:09:28.75 The other day I was feeling kind of down, 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.28 I couldn't figure out why. 00:09:30.29\00:09:32.32 I've decided to talk to the Lord. 00:09:32.33\00:09:34.39 You know, sometimes we talk to our friends 00:09:34.40\00:09:35.99 and we talk to this or that person, 00:09:36.00\00:09:37.51 but they won't always give you-- 00:09:37.52\00:09:39.54 they can't reach your heart, you know what I'm saying. 00:09:39.55\00:09:41.94 There're some things we need to take to God 00:09:41.95\00:09:43.78 and it really startled me when the Lord said, 00:09:43.79\00:09:45.61 you're holding a grudge. I get so insult. 00:09:45.62\00:09:47.87 Ah! No! Not me! Never! Yeah. 00:09:47.88\00:09:54.65 I said Lord Jesus, help me to understand today 00:09:54.66\00:09:58.60 how merciful you are to me, 00:09:58.61\00:10:00.29 so that I could-- and give me an opportunity 00:10:00.30\00:10:02.12 to show mercy to that person and He did. 00:10:02.13\00:10:03.80 It was so wonderful and it was gone 00:10:03.81\00:10:05.33 and guess what? I cheered up. 00:10:05.34\00:10:08.27 We got to give control to God. 00:10:08.28\00:10:10.19 We've got to be willing to change. 00:10:10.20\00:10:13.48 And it maybe painful in the moment, 00:10:13.49\00:10:14.89 but He says you have fullness and joy 00:10:14.90\00:10:17.51 and the other thing the T for act 00:10:17.52\00:10:19.78 is you got to spend time with Him. 00:10:19.79\00:10:22.76 It takes more than quality time 00:10:22.77\00:10:24.95 to have a walk with God. It takes what? 00:10:24.96\00:10:28.52 Any latchkey kids here? It takes quantity. 00:10:28.53\00:10:31.46 You've got to spend time with God. 00:10:31.47\00:10:33.53 Prayer, Bible study, serious stuff. 00:10:33.54\00:10:38.00 I went backwards. 00:10:38.01\00:10:39.96 The Bible says to submit ourselves to God. 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.89 In Isaiah it says, I've seen his ways. 00:10:42.90\00:10:45.53 This is the promise when you do it. 00:10:45.54\00:10:47.24 He says I see you in my book, I see this man was born here, 00:10:47.25\00:10:51.90 I see-- A man came up to me yesterday, 00:10:51.91\00:10:53.66 he said by the time I was five years old, 00:10:53.67\00:10:55.58 I was in 20 different homes as a foster child. 00:10:55.59\00:10:58.37 Do you think the Lord sees that man's brokenness? 00:10:58.38\00:11:00.85 Do you think he knows what path to lead that him on, 00:11:00.86\00:11:04.39 to put the nurturing people in his life that he needs, 00:11:04.40\00:11:07.25 and also to put the irritating ones 00:11:07.26\00:11:09.26 in his life to toughen him up? 00:11:09.27\00:11:11.12 The Bible says, I have seen his ways, 00:11:13.78\00:11:15.97 I will heal him, I will lead him also, 00:11:15.98\00:11:18.84 and restore, what? Comforts. 00:11:18.85\00:11:21.37 The Bible said, "blessed are they that mourned, 00:11:21.38\00:11:24.03 for they'll be comforted, there's a save, 00:11:24.04\00:11:25.83 there's a balm in Gilead when we're sinned, 00:11:25.84\00:11:27.81 when we're wrong. 00:11:27.82\00:11:29.37 And sometimes we sin because we've been toxin 00:11:29.38\00:11:31.70 because others have injured us. 00:11:31.71\00:11:33.09 But friends, it's still sin. 00:11:33.10\00:11:35.92 People that have been abused as children, 00:11:35.93\00:11:37.93 what do they grow up and do? They abuse. 00:11:37.94\00:11:42.24 It's traumatic, it's terrible, 00:11:42.25\00:11:43.72 it's tragic, it's sin, it's unfair, 00:11:43.73\00:11:45.88 but they're doing it too. 00:11:45.89\00:11:49.00 And God can heal it all. 00:11:49.01\00:11:50.30 He says, I came to show mercy to a thousand generations. 00:11:50.31\00:11:55.50 He came to break the cycle of sin in your family 00:11:55.51\00:11:58.43 and he wants to start with you. 00:11:58.44\00:12:01.16 I like what Dick O'Ffill says, we get onto our knees, 00:12:01.17\00:12:03.40 O' Lord, change my husband, 00:12:03.41\00:12:06.10 change my husband, and fix my car. 00:12:06.11\00:12:10.28 But Lord-- what we've to say is, 00:12:10.29\00:12:11.68 Lord, change me. Change me. 00:12:11.69\00:12:14.30 This is from 00:12:17.32\00:12:18.32 the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. 00:12:18.33\00:12:20.37 It's amazing how these secular journals 00:12:20.38\00:12:22.66 are validating the word of God. 00:12:22.67\00:12:25.03 It says we conclude that faith in God, 00:12:25.04\00:12:28.73 prayer, and religious attitudes. 00:12:28.74\00:12:32.45 What's a religious attitude? 00:12:32.46\00:12:35.70 Somebody tell me? 00:12:35.71\00:12:37.27 Well, they have measured it, friends. 00:12:37.28\00:12:38.86 And they have defined it for us. 00:12:38.87\00:12:41.01 They say personal devotion. 00:12:41.02\00:12:43.07 Devotional attitude is the religious attitude 00:12:43.08\00:12:44.92 in the article, are strongly associated with what? 00:12:44.93\00:12:50.03 Life satisfaction, that's because we're so selfish 00:12:50.04\00:12:53.43 and we've got to let the Lord 00:12:53.44\00:12:54.76 break up selfishness in our hearts and lives. 00:12:54.77\00:13:00.07 Second key, pray for hatred, 00:13:00.08\00:13:02.78 this is a winner, this is a winner. 00:13:02.79\00:13:05.74 One lady had an addiction, a food addiction 00:13:05.75\00:13:09.04 and it was so serious and she just loved it. 00:13:09.05\00:13:12.32 Even though she knew it was terrible 00:13:12.33\00:13:13.67 and against God's will. 00:13:13.68\00:13:15.14 And she knew it was bad for her 00:13:15.15\00:13:16.76 and she knew it was keeping her 00:13:16.77\00:13:18.04 from being able to minister to her family 00:13:18.05\00:13:19.76 in an unselfish way. 00:13:19.77\00:13:21.69 And so she said, Lord, 00:13:21.70\00:13:23.27 I am so stuck on this thing 00:13:23.28\00:13:25.57 that I just don't even know what to do. 00:13:25.58\00:13:27.11 So I'm asking you to take it, 00:13:27.12\00:13:29.00 'cause I can't even give it to you. 00:13:29.01\00:13:30.75 Just take it! Please! 00:13:30.76\00:13:32.61 He took it, He took it. 00:13:32.62\00:13:36.60 Many times I have asked the Lord for a hatred, 00:13:36.61\00:13:39.48 for the things that I know displease Him. 00:13:39.49\00:13:41.24 We're told in Spirit of Prophecy 00:13:41.25\00:13:42.73 don't even wait for conviction 00:13:42.74\00:13:44.52 if you see the light, follow it. 00:13:44.53\00:13:47.48 That's an amazing thing. 00:13:47.49\00:13:48.73 We'll act by principle, not by feeling an impulse. Amen. 00:13:48.74\00:13:54.12 The Bible says, that when we come to Him 00:13:54.13\00:13:55.88 our conscience are seared with a hot iron. 00:13:55.89\00:13:58.70 We don't-- we can't-- 00:13:58.71\00:13:59.78 our consciences are not fully trustworthy. 00:13:59.79\00:14:02.53 They have to be filtered 00:14:02.54\00:14:04.24 through the word of God. Right? 00:14:04.25\00:14:10.26 Not that I don't listen to my conscience, 00:14:10.27\00:14:12.04 but when I have a conviction or a feeling 00:14:12.05\00:14:14.00 I take it to the word of God to see if it's valid, 00:14:14.01\00:14:18.42 to see if it's valid. We can pray for hatred. 00:14:18.43\00:14:21.34 The first promise is I will put enmity. 00:14:21.35\00:14:23.93 He promised I will do it. 00:14:23.94\00:14:26.74 You know, I hated being bulimic. 00:14:26.75\00:14:28.96 I asked the Lord to put hatred in my heart, 00:14:28.97\00:14:30.63 for He did, it was instant. 00:14:30.64\00:14:32.20 I didn't hate spending my paycheck 00:14:32.21\00:14:34.65 the way I wanted to, I didn't hate that. 00:14:34.66\00:14:38.37 I like spending my paycheck the way I wanted to. 00:14:38.38\00:14:42.26 He says I will cleanse you from all our filthiness 00:14:42.27\00:14:44.96 and from all your idols I will cleanse you. 00:14:44.97\00:14:46.90 What a promise, what a promise. 00:14:46.91\00:14:49.95 This is from drug, alcohol dependency. 00:14:51.70\00:14:53.59 It's a medical journal. 00:14:53.60\00:14:54.75 Personal religiosity is positively 00:14:54.76\00:14:57.63 correlated with, what? 00:14:57.64\00:14:59.73 Rejection of substance use even after controlling 00:14:59.74\00:15:02.70 for individual differences in personality. 00:15:02.71\00:15:05.08 So this religion thing works, it works. 00:15:05.09\00:15:11.23 We've got to purge the temple. 00:15:11.24\00:15:13.58 You know, every smoker knows when you quit smoking, 00:15:13.59\00:15:16.59 what do you have to do? Get rid of the cigarettes. 00:15:16.60\00:15:20.60 Do you think I kept the Hoggin Dawgs 00:15:20.61\00:15:22.26 in my refrigerator when I gave up 00:15:22.27\00:15:24.16 my ice cream addiction? It had to go. 00:15:24.17\00:15:28.66 There were things that just had to go. 00:15:28.67\00:15:31.85 We have to cleanse our sanctuary. 00:15:31.86\00:15:35.41 Our home should be representative of heaven. 00:15:35.42\00:15:38.62 Shouldn't it be? It's a sanctuary. 00:15:38.63\00:15:40.65 It's a safe place from evil. 00:15:40.66\00:15:42.33 Isn't that what the home should be? 00:15:42.34\00:15:44.03 Isn't that our goal 00:15:44.04\00:15:45.48 to have our homes to be a pure 00:15:45.49\00:15:47.62 where angels can rest their feet? 00:15:47.63\00:15:50.05 Imagine the poor angels on Sabbath, 00:15:50.06\00:15:51.65 they're guarding everybody, 00:15:51.66\00:15:52.79 they have to listen to rock music, 00:15:52.80\00:15:54.42 they have to listen to rap, 00:15:54.43\00:15:56.17 they have to go the baseball games, 00:15:56.18\00:15:58.11 they have to go all over the place. 00:15:58.12\00:16:00.24 Shouldn't they be able to enjoy your home on Sabbath 00:16:00.25\00:16:04.69 and on every other day of the week? 00:16:04.70\00:16:06.74 The Bible says don't bring 00:16:08.87\00:16:10.65 an abomination into your house. 00:16:10.66\00:16:13.97 Is what I bring into my home acceptable to God? 00:16:13.98\00:16:18.78 I've heard parents say, well, it's his room. 00:16:18.79\00:16:21.36 You know, it's Johnny's room, 00:16:21.37\00:16:23.89 so he just has to do his evil stuff in there. 00:16:23.90\00:16:27.46 Oh, does he pay the mortgage payment? 00:16:27.47\00:16:30.80 Is he the breadwinner? 00:16:30.81\00:16:33.58 Is that the way a Christian home should operate? 00:16:33.59\00:16:41.48 The Bible says, that in the last days, 00:16:41.49\00:16:44.76 women will be their oppressors 00:16:44.77\00:16:46.27 and children will rule over them. 00:16:46.28\00:16:48.25 That is not God's will. 00:16:48.26\00:16:50.59 The Lord said of Abraham, I know him 00:16:50.60\00:16:52.36 that he'll command his household after him. 00:16:52.37\00:16:54.80 Now does that mean with an iron fist, 00:16:54.81\00:16:56.34 absolutely not, but are their regulations 00:16:56.35\00:16:58.22 and rules and hey, I'm sorry 00:16:58.23\00:16:59.51 this is just the way it is. 00:16:59.52\00:17:02.18 Children respect you when you live out your convictions. 00:17:02.19\00:17:04.64 They respect you 00:17:04.65\00:17:06.40 even if they're irritated for the moment. 00:17:06.41\00:17:09.33 And it says let's do become a curse thing like it, 00:17:09.34\00:17:11.50 we become like that which we take into ourselves 00:17:11.51\00:17:14.25 and into our home. 00:17:14.26\00:17:15.49 We are commanded to detest it. 00:17:15.50\00:17:17.91 It says of Jesus and Hebrew's, 00:17:17.92\00:17:19.52 "thou has loved righteousness and hated iniquity." 00:17:19.53\00:17:23.67 It is time to start hating some things, friends. 00:17:23.68\00:17:26.79 Not people but they are-- 00:17:26.80\00:17:28.60 we need to hate the things that God hates. 00:17:28.61\00:17:31.80 Neutrality is not safe. This is a war. 00:17:31.81\00:17:37.63 For it is a cursed thing. 00:17:37.64\00:17:38.82 Now number four, we need to get support. 00:17:38.83\00:17:42.47 Don't be in island. Don't stay by yourself. 00:17:42.48\00:17:45.12 Find somebody that will understand, 00:17:45.13\00:17:48.79 that you can pray with and share with, 00:17:48.80\00:17:50.68 that can call you to accountability 00:17:50.69\00:17:53.31 with this thing then you have struggled with. 00:17:53.32\00:17:57.65 The Bible says that God sets the solitary in families. 00:17:57.66\00:18:02.76 Let me ask you this. 00:18:02.77\00:18:05.73 Have you created an atmosphere 00:18:05.74\00:18:07.69 around yourself in your church 00:18:07.70\00:18:10.24 so that anyone feels like they can come to you 00:18:10.25\00:18:12.53 with a problem and that they will get sound counsel, 00:18:12.54\00:18:16.81 but warm support and love and friendship? 00:18:16.82\00:18:20.08 And that means more than just walking around 00:18:22.33\00:18:24.33 with a smile on your face. 00:18:24.34\00:18:26.93 It means inquiring after the will, 00:18:26.94\00:18:29.12 welfare of fellow believers. 00:18:29.13\00:18:31.37 It means when you see something 00:18:31.38\00:18:33.59 that is out of harmony with God's will 00:18:33.60\00:18:35.23 that you go home and you pray 00:18:35.24\00:18:36.58 for that brother or sister or that family 00:18:36.59\00:18:38.66 and you pray for God to set up a circumstance 00:18:38.67\00:18:41.71 so that you can minister truth. 00:18:41.72\00:18:44.58 Is that hatred or is that love? 00:18:44.59\00:18:47.25 We've got to wait for God's timing, don't we? 00:18:47.26\00:18:50.00 Prayer is so powerful. 00:18:50.01\00:18:52.57 It says He brings out those which are bound with chains. 00:18:52.58\00:18:59.19 Healthy social ties are linked with longer life, 00:18:59.20\00:19:02.75 improved mental health, 00:19:02.76\00:19:04.70 less sickness, and less depression. 00:19:04.71\00:19:07.29 You know, we did some health meetings 00:19:07.30\00:19:08.58 at a church when Sabbath, 00:19:08.59\00:19:11.01 we had a revival meeting for the church 00:19:11.02\00:19:13.54 and the lady that invited us to come, organized it, 00:19:13.55\00:19:18.10 when it came time for potluck we were standing in line 00:19:18.11\00:19:21.57 and she walked by us and she said good luck, 00:19:21.58\00:19:24.06 gotten anything to eat here, I'm going home. 00:19:24.07\00:19:27.65 And she left us there and Dane and I looked to one another 00:19:27.66\00:19:32.05 and said some missionary, some missionary. 00:19:32.06\00:19:35.66 There was another church in California 00:19:35.67\00:19:37.23 we've heard to and it was really funny 00:19:37.24\00:19:38.90 because the group that was most health conscious 00:19:38.91\00:19:44.13 was complaining to us that their food wasn't-- 00:19:44.14\00:19:49.50 they weren't accepted-- they weren't accepted. 00:19:49.51\00:19:52.78 Well, they were taking all their food into another room 00:19:52.79\00:19:57.03 so that it wouldn't mix with anybody else's 00:19:57.04\00:19:59.42 so that they wouldn't make a mistake 00:19:59.43\00:20:00.86 and get something that might have cottage 00:20:00.87\00:20:02.26 cheese in it or something. You know, what I'm saying? 00:20:02.27\00:20:04.35 So this, this is not a family atmosphere. 00:20:04.36\00:20:11.18 If we want to be missionaries we have to be willing 00:20:11.19\00:20:13.95 to mingle with people, blend with people, 00:20:13.96\00:20:16.42 bring lots of wonderful things to share. Amen. 00:20:16.43\00:20:22.26 And we want to create a family environment 00:20:22.27\00:20:24.75 and one that is not so full of strive, 00:20:24.76\00:20:27.56 and division, and criticism, 00:20:27.57\00:20:28.88 and judging people over 00:20:28.89\00:20:29.93 whether they eat one thing or not eat another thing. 00:20:29.94\00:20:32.71 I know some pretty mean vegetarians 00:20:32.72\00:20:35.31 and I know some mean meat eaters too. 00:20:35.32\00:20:36.97 I mean, we're all pretty mean 00:20:36.98\00:20:38.76 without the Lord in our lives. 00:20:38.77\00:20:41.26 So we need to let the Lord change our attitude 00:20:41.27\00:20:43.06 and when our attitude is right, 00:20:43.07\00:20:44.40 He'll help us make the changes 00:20:44.41\00:20:46.01 that we're supposed to make on His timetable. Amen. 00:20:46.02\00:20:48.96 They're more optimistic. 00:20:52.49\00:20:53.53 People with strong family ties 00:20:53.54\00:20:55.62 and with social ties are more optimistic 00:20:55.63\00:20:58.09 and God wants us to have a spirit of optimism. 00:20:58.10\00:21:00.82 The Bible says of Jesus, He would not fail 00:21:00.83\00:21:03.40 or be discouraged until we said judgment in the land. 00:21:03.41\00:21:07.10 And this is when we're gonna read together. 00:21:07.11\00:21:09.75 No more kitty parties. 00:21:09.76\00:21:12.87 Now everybody didn't read that, 00:21:12.88\00:21:14.23 because there's lot of people in here. 00:21:14.24\00:21:16.07 Let's do it again, no more kitty parties, 00:21:16.08\00:21:20.27 you know why? 00:21:20.28\00:21:21.31 Because nobody will attend, 00:21:21.32\00:21:23.57 you'll be there all by yourself. 00:21:23.58\00:21:26.20 Those kitty parties mess up, 00:21:26.21\00:21:28.82 Oh, they mess up your brain chemistry 00:21:28.83\00:21:30.98 something, something bad. 00:21:30.99\00:21:33.58 People that tend to ruminate, 00:21:33.59\00:21:35.58 it is the studies that have come out 00:21:35.59\00:21:38.18 show that women tend to ruminate more than men 00:21:38.19\00:21:41.09 and when there's an only son 00:21:41.10\00:21:43.58 or first born son in the home he tends to be a ruminator, 00:21:43.59\00:21:46.85 they tend to mull over with problems 00:21:46.86\00:21:48.72 over and over and over and over 00:21:48.73\00:21:51.00 and then they'll call their friends 00:21:51.01\00:21:52.04 and talk about it with their friends, 00:21:52.05\00:21:53.07 did you hear the tone of voice that she had 00:21:53.08\00:21:55.06 when she said this to me 00:21:55.07\00:21:56.06 and I just really don't understand it 00:21:56.07\00:21:57.47 and I just, you know, and then-- 00:21:57.48\00:21:59.94 maybe I could have said something different 00:21:59.95\00:22:01.47 and then you know, we go on and on 00:22:01.48\00:22:03.37 and think and re-live it, re-live it, 00:22:03.38\00:22:05.04 re-live it, it's ruminating. 00:22:05.05\00:22:07.07 And then we start to feel bad 00:22:07.08\00:22:08.82 and then we start to feel sorry for us. 00:22:08.83\00:22:10.15 Well, if they just only appreciated me, 00:22:10.16\00:22:11.83 they just really don't appreciate my-- 00:22:11.84\00:22:14.21 my heart was in the right place when I said-- 00:22:14.22\00:22:16.50 and then we go on and on and on and on and on. 00:22:16.51\00:22:18.91 We don't let it go and what happens in the brain, 00:22:18.92\00:22:22.91 the right frontal cortex gets way overactive, 00:22:22.92\00:22:26.37 the left frontal which is more responsible 00:22:26.38\00:22:31.25 for feelings of well being, easy going, cheerful, 00:22:31.26\00:22:34.96 it starts to travel down and the anxious 00:22:34.97\00:22:37.46 and the ruminating with negative self talk 00:22:37.47\00:22:40.39 starts to go up and up and up and up 00:22:40.40\00:22:42.27 and brain chemistry starts to act 00:22:42.28\00:22:44.45 on nerves synapses in the brain 00:22:44.46\00:22:46.81 and then what starts to happen? 00:22:46.82\00:22:48.83 You start to make synapses that keep you exactly there 00:22:48.84\00:22:54.27 and you form a habit. 00:22:54.28\00:22:58.43 Have you ever been around somebody that 00:22:58.44\00:23:00.05 they can't open their mouth without talking about somebody 00:23:00.06\00:23:04.03 or some negative thing? 00:23:04.04\00:23:05.99 Have you ever been around somebody like that? 00:23:06.00\00:23:09.47 Does that mean that we're never gonna feel sad? 00:23:09.48\00:23:11.73 Does that mean we're never gonna have 00:23:11.74\00:23:13.00 any sorrow in our heart? 00:23:13.01\00:23:15.09 We have been sold a bill of good 00:23:15.10\00:23:16.58 by the advertising agencies thinking 00:23:16.59\00:23:18.21 that we should never ever feel bad 00:23:18.22\00:23:21.00 that the solution to any kind of pain is a product 00:23:21.01\00:23:24.45 and you've got to have it now. 00:23:24.46\00:23:26.30 But we need downtime and God gives us downtime 00:23:26.31\00:23:28.74 and things happen in our lives that are sad 00:23:28.75\00:23:30.62 and we do have things that we need to deal with. 00:23:30.63\00:23:32.46 Some of us everyday we have challenges. 00:23:32.47\00:23:35.66 Sadness takes us offline, 00:23:35.67\00:23:37.62 so we can regroup and reevaluate. 00:23:37.63\00:23:40.84 It may even cause enough pain 00:23:40.85\00:23:43.65 so that we're motivated to change. 00:23:43.66\00:23:48.21 What does the Bible say, I thought on my ways 00:23:48.22\00:23:51.66 and turn my feet unto thy testimonies. 00:23:51.67\00:23:54.21 The thing that this society has robbed from us 00:23:54.22\00:23:56.58 more than anything else is downtime to fake, 00:23:56.59\00:24:01.50 to examine our lives. 00:24:01.51\00:24:03.70 The Bible says, ponder the path of thy feet 00:24:03.71\00:24:08.48 and let all thy ways be established on the rock Jesus. 00:24:08.49\00:24:14.02 The biggest mistake we can make right now 00:24:14.03\00:24:16.01 is to assume that what we are doing is correct. 00:24:16.02\00:24:21.15 When we are at days walk from the Lord, 00:24:21.16\00:24:24.39 it says I thought on my ways 00:24:24.40\00:24:26.08 and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. 00:24:26.09\00:24:30.14 But the literature says prolong sadness 00:24:30.15\00:24:34.02 can cause sustain overactivity in the medulla 00:24:34.03\00:24:37.03 that is a fear center. 00:24:37.04\00:24:38.38 That's where you-- the immediate primal fear 00:24:38.39\00:24:41.34 response takesplace. 00:24:41.35\00:24:42.66 By the way that is very strongly 00:24:42.67\00:24:44.52 stimulated with television and frontal lobe. 00:24:44.53\00:24:47.79 Remember we just talked about that 00:24:47.80\00:24:49.04 right frontal lobe causing neuronal, what? 00:24:49.05\00:24:52.19 Burnout in those areas either by depleting their stores, 00:24:52.20\00:24:56.93 remember we talked about 00:24:56.94\00:24:58.12 when you've over-flooding of certain neuron hormones, 00:24:58.13\00:25:01.45 it causes free radical damage to the very cells 00:25:01.46\00:25:04.35 that produce those hormones and it destroys the receptors. 00:25:04.36\00:25:07.85 So now you get hooked on this-- 00:25:07.86\00:25:10.21 you can get hooked on negative things 00:25:10.22\00:25:13.53 either by depleting their stores of neurotransmitters 00:25:13.54\00:25:16.28 or crippling the ability of the chemicals 00:25:16.29\00:25:18.82 to transmit messages and you wind up depressed. 00:25:18.83\00:25:25.62 The Bible says, we're to contemplate 00:25:25.63\00:25:27.10 that which is true, honest, just, 00:25:27.11\00:25:30.87 pure, pleasant, positive, virtuous, and praiseworthy. 00:25:30.88\00:25:35.24 And by the way, if you read through the Bible 00:25:35.25\00:25:38.92 especially through the Psalms 00:25:38.93\00:25:40.27 that have some Prophecy in them, 00:25:40.28\00:25:41.98 you'll see that one of the end time things 00:25:41.99\00:25:43.88 that God's agonizing saints are doing 00:25:43.89\00:25:45.96 is crying out for judgment. 00:25:45.97\00:25:48.06 Crying out for the judgment of God in this world 00:25:48.07\00:25:50.71 and for Him to correct all this evil 00:25:50.72\00:25:53.63 and for us to pull out our hearts to Him 00:25:53.64\00:25:55.45 about the things that were frustrating, 00:25:55.46\00:25:57.09 that is a positive thing. 00:25:57.10\00:26:00.30 This is from the journal, Personality 00:26:00.31\00:26:01.82 and Social Psychology, gratitude, optimism. 00:26:01.83\00:26:07.06 I mean, is this a choice? Is it a choice? 00:26:07.07\00:26:11.93 The way things are going in this world 00:26:11.94\00:26:13.69 if you're gonna be cheerful, nice, 00:26:13.70\00:26:15.10 happy, optimistic and grateful, 00:26:15.11\00:26:16.88 it is a choice, it is not a feeling. 00:26:16.89\00:26:18.93 It is a decision. 00:26:18.94\00:26:20.42 It's a completely different part of the brain 00:26:20.43\00:26:23.73 than the lower centers, 00:26:23.74\00:26:24.93 the emotional centers of the brain. 00:26:24.94\00:26:26.46 It is a cognitive decision. 00:26:26.47\00:26:28.72 And in this area of the brain 00:26:28.73\00:26:30.43 where it's called executive control 00:26:30.44\00:26:32.31 where we make those kinds of decisions, 00:26:32.32\00:26:34.35 they are dopamine receptors 00:26:34.36\00:26:36.35 and it feels good to act from principle 00:26:36.36\00:26:38.82 and to use self control 00:26:38.83\00:26:40.42 and God strengthens those areas of the brain 00:26:40.43\00:26:42.86 as we act on them. 00:26:42.87\00:26:45.89 Gratitude, optimism, diligence, 00:26:45.90\00:26:48.21 perseverance under stress, 00:26:48.22\00:26:51.83 you know, children need to learn perseverance 00:26:51.84\00:26:53.68 under stress don't they? 00:26:53.69\00:26:54.84 I can't think of a better way to teach perseverance 00:26:54.85\00:26:57.15 under stress than teaching a child 00:26:57.16\00:26:58.56 how to clean a bathroom properly. 00:26:58.57\00:27:01.28 How do you get them to understand that 00:27:01.29\00:27:03.39 this is a rewarding experience? 00:27:03.40\00:27:05.80 It's good if you have two or three bathrooms 00:27:05.81\00:27:07.61 because sometimes the experiment 00:27:07.62\00:27:08.92 has to be repeated several times until they get it. 00:27:08.93\00:27:12.40 But it's linked to better mental and physical health. 00:27:12.41\00:27:14.87 Childhood is the time to teach them to delay impulse 00:27:14.88\00:27:19.41 and to help them to control those impulses 00:27:19.42\00:27:21.59 in a graduated and careful way. 00:27:21.60\00:27:25.29 This is the one we talked about yesterday, 00:27:25.30\00:27:26.88 voluntary smiling actually changes brain activity, 00:27:26.89\00:27:29.88 regional brain activity. 00:27:29.89\00:27:31.06 It stops the production of cortisol, 00:27:31.07\00:27:33.38 which does some very serious damage in high levels 00:27:33.39\00:27:36.69 in the hippocampal area of the brain 00:27:36.70\00:27:38.22 and that's your memory retrieval system. 00:27:38.23\00:27:40.73 We want to avoid depressing places and activities. 00:27:44.23\00:27:48.74 It is so easy to gravitate to old haunts 00:27:48.75\00:27:52.75 and old nurture things. 00:27:52.76\00:27:54.38 And you know, friends, when we tried to get comfort 00:27:54.39\00:27:56.93 when food or gambling or sex or porn or internet 00:27:56.94\00:28:01.88 or card playing or whatever it is, 00:28:01.89\00:28:05.72 becomes a substitute for experiencing life 00:28:05.73\00:28:11.57 and for dealing with life, it can result in an addiction. 00:28:11.58\00:28:16.52 Whenever we use those things to avoid pain, 00:28:16.53\00:28:21.82 we are not getting comfort Christ ways 00:28:21.83\00:28:24.58 and we're in great danger of developing an addiction. 00:28:24.59\00:28:28.13 Eve sought a comfort 00:28:28.14\00:28:31.20 and a blessing outside of Christ 00:28:31.21\00:28:33.34 appointed way, didn't she? 00:28:33.35\00:28:35.13 And it ended in disaster 00:28:35.14\00:28:37.99 and when I seek to comfort myself 00:28:38.00\00:28:39.93 outside of Christ way, I suffered, 00:28:39.94\00:28:43.73 I suffered and it ends only in more, what? 00:28:43.74\00:28:48.62 More need, more longing. 00:28:48.63\00:28:51.08 We eat because we feel insecure, 00:28:51.09\00:28:53.20 we need to feel loved, 00:28:53.21\00:28:55.70 we have a longing in our hearts, 00:28:55.71\00:28:57.16 we're lonely then we gain weight 00:28:57.17\00:29:00.41 and we're more lonely and isolated than ever. 00:29:00.42\00:29:02.82 The devil is so mean. 00:29:02.83\00:29:04.09 Don't let him do that to you anymore. 00:29:04.10\00:29:06.33 Get your comfort in Christ. 00:29:06.34\00:29:08.50 Avoid television and reading materials 00:29:12.36\00:29:14.48 that are depressing, traumatic, 00:29:14.49\00:29:18.15 violent, immoral, or pointless. 00:29:18.16\00:29:21.55 If the brain, 00:29:24.24\00:29:25.89 this is Dr. Ratey, our neuropsychiatrist 00:29:25.90\00:29:28.55 who wrote a users guide to the brain. 00:29:28.56\00:29:31.27 If the brain is busy trying to filte 00:29:31.28\00:29:33.50 uncomfortable and frustrating noise, 00:29:33.51\00:29:36.77 worries or other concerns 00:29:36.78\00:29:38.77 there is less brain stuff available for what? 00:29:38.78\00:29:41.85 Perceiving, evaluating, and prognosticating. 00:29:41.86\00:29:49.52 We want to engage in activities 00:29:49.53\00:29:51.20 that are refreshing, relaxing, helpful, 00:29:51.21\00:29:55.67 moral, and mentally stimulating. 00:29:55.68\00:30:00.16 Is there anything on that list that you're opposed to? 00:30:00.17\00:30:04.34 And yet we think we are gonna suffer so much 00:30:04.35\00:30:06.91 if we let God tell us what to do when we're feeling bad. 00:30:06.92\00:30:09.93 We think we know how to fix this thing. 00:30:09.94\00:30:12.60 And God want to direct our physical path, 00:30:15.61\00:30:19.80 so that we can experience regeneration 00:30:19.81\00:30:23.26 not just on the spiritual level, 00:30:23.27\00:30:25.41 but on the physiologic, immunologic, 00:30:25.42\00:30:27.56 neurologic, and genetic level. 00:30:27.57\00:30:30.48 Change a course so that the promise can be fulfilled 00:30:30.49\00:30:34.68 that is outlined for us in desire of ages 00:30:34.69\00:30:37.14 that his thoughts actually become our impulses. 00:30:37.15\00:30:40.03 Impulses are neurological, is that good news today? 00:30:40.04\00:30:44.23 What are those three Hebrew boys say 00:30:46.90\00:30:48.72 when king Nebuchadnezzar said, look, you know 00:30:48.73\00:30:51.07 you need to worship me or you'll be in the furnace. 00:30:51.08\00:30:54.91 They said we're not careful to answer you in this matter. 00:30:54.92\00:30:58.09 If it be so our God whom we service able to delivers, 00:30:58.10\00:31:01.04 but if not be it known unto thee O king 00:31:01.05\00:31:03.45 that we will not bow down and worship the idol 00:31:03.46\00:31:05.49 which thou has setup. 00:31:05.50\00:31:08.90 Neurologically, they had a readiness pathway, 00:31:08.91\00:31:12.07 they were ready. Why were they ready? 00:31:12.08\00:31:13.95 Because they served Him everyday, 00:31:13.96\00:31:16.17 because they chose His way everyday, 00:31:16.18\00:31:18.43 and they didn't even have to think about it. 00:31:18.44\00:31:20.04 They were on automatic pilot 00:31:20.05\00:31:21.68 because when you're under stress 00:31:21.69\00:31:23.34 the only thing that's gonna kick in is automatic pilot. 00:31:23.35\00:31:26.18 Believe me, you won't have time to think. 00:31:26.19\00:31:28.69 We need to accept and cultivate forgiveness, 00:31:32.37\00:31:35.55 not only forgiveness to those who have hurt us, 00:31:35.56\00:31:39.53 but to those-- to ourselves, 00:31:39.54\00:31:41.89 for ourselves we need to understand 00:31:41.90\00:31:43.63 and receive the great forgiveness of God 00:31:43.64\00:31:46.81 and sometimes that's a hardest thing to do. 00:31:46.82\00:31:49.50 We kick ourselves around the block a million times. 00:31:49.51\00:31:56.10 And we're told in Spirit of Prophecy 00:31:56.11\00:31:57.43 that God can do nothing with a discouraged man. 00:31:57.44\00:32:01.34 The enemy loves that when we're discouraged, 00:32:01.35\00:32:03.45 when we have a hard time picking ourselves up, 00:32:03.46\00:32:05.34 when we've made a mistake, we failed. 00:32:05.35\00:32:08.14 Say, thank you Lord for showing me 00:32:08.15\00:32:10.10 what I really am. 00:32:10.11\00:32:11.11 Should it surprise me? No. 00:32:11.12\00:32:14.11 Why doesn't it surprise me 00:32:14.12\00:32:15.11 'cause I've an inflated view myself. 00:32:15.12\00:32:16.97 Now you show me what I am and now let's get started. 00:32:16.98\00:32:19.37 Let's go to work. 00:32:19.38\00:32:21.02 That's the attitude we have to take. 00:32:21.03\00:32:24.03 And the way that I've learned 00:32:24.04\00:32:25.41 that I can forgive others, especially others from 00:32:25.42\00:32:28.59 the past who've done major damage, 00:32:28.60\00:32:30.41 you know, like little kids and stuff. 00:32:30.42\00:32:34.11 When we understand that those who are used 00:32:34.12\00:32:37.07 by the enemy are let captive by Satan at His will, 00:32:37.08\00:32:42.00 they don't have the power of choice 00:32:42.01\00:32:44.98 and I told one lady on the phone, 00:32:44.99\00:32:46.21 I said man, you've seen the devil face to face, 00:32:46.22\00:32:48.72 sit's time to let God have His way. 00:32:48.73\00:32:52.68 It's time to let God pay that situation back. 00:32:52.69\00:32:55.48 Let Him use you to pay that situation back 00:32:55.49\00:32:58.49 that you had no control over. 00:32:58.50\00:33:00.67 And this woman's life is a glory to God. 00:33:00.68\00:33:02.92 I do not know another human being. 00:33:02.93\00:33:05.22 It's a friend of mine, 00:33:05.23\00:33:07.15 I do not know a human being 00:33:07.16\00:33:08.77 who has been through a worse childhood 00:33:08.78\00:33:10.48 than that child-- than that woman 00:33:10.49\00:33:11.71 and she is a God fearing saint, 00:33:11.72\00:33:14.09 she is scatterbrain, she collect stuff, 00:33:14.10\00:33:18.39 she is so funny, she loves the Lord so much. 00:33:18.40\00:33:21.95 You know, these are vestiges of her, 00:33:21.96\00:33:23.48 whatever, from when she was little, 00:33:23.49\00:33:25.58 but she is so amazing to me. 00:33:25.59\00:33:28.52 Her love for God, she is raising her children for God 00:33:28.53\00:33:31.80 and she is an amazing, amazing woman. 00:33:31.81\00:33:35.09 That's why we can't judge people 00:33:35.10\00:33:36.40 by what we see because we don't know 00:33:36.41\00:33:38.35 where they've been. Amen. 00:33:38.36\00:33:41.92 So we've got to accept and cultivate forgiveness 00:33:41.93\00:33:44.14 and when I'm upset with somebody, 00:33:44.15\00:33:46.69 you know, it's really a funny kind of Adventist thing, 00:33:46.70\00:33:49.32 we're never upset, we're just concerned. 00:33:49.33\00:33:52.90 We're frustrated and we don't understand. 00:33:55.76\00:33:58.90 But we're told we're to go to God 00:33:58.91\00:34:01.24 and tell Him exactly the way we see things. 00:34:01.25\00:34:04.29 He knows how we really feel. 00:34:04.30\00:34:07.95 And so we've got to stop with all these euphemisms. 00:34:07.96\00:34:09.85 When we talk to the Lord, 00:34:09.86\00:34:10.85 say Lord, this person is just burns me up right now 00:34:10.86\00:34:14.74 and I don't want to see them. 00:34:14.75\00:34:17.02 They have double crossed me, done X,Y,Z. 00:34:17.03\00:34:19.43 And now, Lord, I'm coming to you 00:34:19.44\00:34:22.59 not feeling very right about this 00:34:22.60\00:34:23.91 and I know that's wrong. 00:34:23.92\00:34:25.51 That's not a correct response for a Christian 00:34:25.52\00:34:28.94 and so Lord before I ever open my mouth 00:34:28.95\00:34:31.08 or go out into the public, let's talk about this. 00:34:31.09\00:34:33.79 And what I do, if I'm upset with someone, 00:34:33.80\00:34:35.94 if you're upset with someone, isn't that usually 00:34:35.95\00:34:37.63 because they've done you wrong? 00:34:37.64\00:34:39.57 I mean most of the times. 00:34:39.58\00:34:40.57 Some people they're just angry people, 00:34:40.58\00:34:42.00 they're always picking fights 00:34:42.01\00:34:43.08 and they need to come to the cross 00:34:43.09\00:34:45.45 and let Jesus slay that spirit of anger. 00:34:45.46\00:34:47.95 But some people--you know, if somebody is done you nasty, 00:34:47.96\00:34:53.07 what do you do? 00:34:53.08\00:34:54.11 I'll tell you what I do, it's very simple. 00:34:54.12\00:34:56.72 I like to-- I like to distill things 00:34:56.73\00:35:02.24 down to the simplest factor for myself. 00:35:02.25\00:35:04.54 I ask the Lord to turn my anger into pity. 00:35:04.55\00:35:09.95 Now that works for me, it works. 00:35:09.96\00:35:12.83 Because then He helps me to understand 00:35:12.84\00:35:15.73 and feel really sorry because what He'll do, 00:35:15.74\00:35:18.25 is he'll pull them through a keyhole, 00:35:18.26\00:35:20.60 to help them to see what they're doing 00:35:20.61\00:35:23.08 and then when you begin to really read the Bible 00:35:23.09\00:35:25.17 and really understand how if they don't repent 00:35:25.18\00:35:27.91 and change of this type of pattern, 00:35:27.92\00:35:30.02 then it's gonna be dreadful, why? 00:35:30.03\00:35:33.32 Then we can be compassionated and also watch ourselves. 00:35:33.33\00:35:35.85 The Bible says, restore such a one 00:35:35.86\00:35:38.39 in meekness considering yourself, 00:35:38.40\00:35:41.13 lest thou also be what? Tempted and taken. 00:35:41.14\00:35:46.39 So you've got to cultivate this. 00:35:46.40\00:35:47.81 These aren't things that just okay, 00:35:47.82\00:35:49.35 the Lord sticks in your hearts and it's there. 00:35:49.36\00:35:51.78 No, we've got to battle for these traits. 00:35:51.79\00:35:54.89 Do you understand what I'm saying? 00:35:54.90\00:35:56.60 You've got to take these situations 00:35:56.61\00:35:58.61 to the altar of God and talk to the Lord about it. 00:35:58.62\00:36:01.41 A pastor told me once he said salvation is simple, 00:36:01.42\00:36:03.78 it's arguing with God until he wins. 00:36:03.79\00:36:06.18 The Bible says let the wicked forsake his way, 00:36:10.46\00:36:12.58 that's why the Bible says 00:36:12.59\00:36:13.58 cleanse your hands, ye sinners. 00:36:13.59\00:36:15.73 It says workout your own salvation 00:36:15.74\00:36:17.23 with fear and trembling. 00:36:17.24\00:36:18.23 Oh, no now you're getting into works. 00:36:18.24\00:36:20.04 Yes I am getting into this because the Bible says, 00:36:20.05\00:36:23.38 it is God that works to do and to will 00:36:23.39\00:36:26.39 and to do of his good pleasure in you, 00:36:26.40\00:36:28.08 but friends if there's no-- it's a strive to enter in. 00:36:28.09\00:36:31.91 I'm in a battle, how about you? 00:36:31.92\00:36:33.82 And we're half asleep, 00:36:33.83\00:36:34.98 we expect God to do everything. 00:36:34.99\00:36:36.24 Friends, on the Day of Atonement, 00:36:36.25\00:36:37.83 we all have something to do. 00:36:37.84\00:36:40.46 There were some very special duties 00:36:40.47\00:36:42.95 of the congregation on the Day of Atonement. 00:36:42.96\00:36:45.80 It was a fast day on the Day of Atonement, 00:36:45.81\00:36:48.18 359 days of the year, everything was statistical, 00:36:48.19\00:36:51.25 on the Day of Atonement it was different, 00:36:51.26\00:36:53.17 it was a fast day. 00:36:53.18\00:36:54.27 Appetite had to be under the control 00:36:54.28\00:36:55.90 of the Holy Spirit. There was no work that day. 00:36:55.91\00:36:59.69 On the Day of Atonement, 00:36:59.70\00:37:01.00 our work is second to our relationship with God. 00:37:01.01\00:37:05.04 If you're working too hard 00:37:05.05\00:37:06.19 and you can't spent time with God, 00:37:06.20\00:37:07.45 get a new job. Amen. 00:37:07.46\00:37:09.95 It was a holy convocation 00:37:09.96\00:37:11.42 where they'll command into worship 00:37:11.43\00:37:12.94 and go to church in fellowship. 00:37:12.95\00:37:14.54 And the Bible says forsake not the assembling of yourselves. 00:37:14.55\00:37:19.25 Especially as you see that day drawing, 00:37:19.26\00:37:21.46 I hear these people say, 00:37:21.47\00:37:22.72 I don't like what's going on in my church, 00:37:22.73\00:37:24.33 I am going home. Oh, that's great. 00:37:24.34\00:37:29.77 What did Mark Luther say? 00:37:29.78\00:37:30.95 He said, you're no soldier 00:37:30.96\00:37:32.62 if you're not where the battle is. 00:37:32.63\00:37:33.84 Friends, there is a battle to fight. 00:37:33.85\00:37:36.48 It says many-- it says strive 00:37:36.49\00:37:38.97 to enter in that straight gate, 00:37:38.98\00:37:41.24 many will seek to enter in, but they will not be able. 00:37:41.25\00:37:46.49 It says let the unrighteous man 00:37:46.50\00:37:48.89 forsake his thoughts and return unto the Lord. 00:37:48.90\00:37:51.20 The Bible says, cast off the works of darkness, 00:37:51.21\00:37:54.40 cease to do evil, learn to do well, 00:37:54.41\00:37:56.31 lots of positive commands 00:37:56.32\00:37:57.79 and lots of positive power to do it. 00:37:57.80\00:38:00.85 You know, the worst state to be in 00:38:00.86\00:38:03.13 is the state described at the end of time 00:38:03.14\00:38:05.03 of God's people, it says their philosophy 00:38:05.04\00:38:07.19 is the Lord will not do good and He will not do evil. 00:38:07.20\00:38:10.56 They don't believe in his promises 00:38:10.57\00:38:12.15 and they don't take His threatenings 00:38:12.16\00:38:13.24 very seriously either, they're none. 00:38:13.25\00:38:16.13 I want to believe both. Well, if you ever get a chance to go to Washington 00:51:11.71\00:51:16.29 and go to this Smithsonian institute, 00:51:16.30\00:51:18.37 go to the museum of natural history 00:51:18.38\00:51:20.91 and don't miss the gems. 00:51:20.92\00:51:24.04 I was gone one weekend for a scientific seminar 00:51:24.05\00:51:26.91 and I had a period of time that was free. 00:51:26.92\00:51:30.40 And so I went over to the Smithsonian 00:51:30.41\00:51:32.61 and went into my favorite spot 00:51:32.62\00:51:34.16 because my airplane loving 00:51:34.17\00:51:36.30 husband and son were not with me. 00:51:36.31\00:51:38.34 I could spend as much time as 00:51:38.35\00:51:40.11 I wanted looking at these rocks and gems. 00:51:40.12\00:51:44.21 I missed them, but I was glad 00:51:44.22\00:51:45.46 to have all the time I wanted. 00:51:45.47\00:51:48.14 And so I began to look at the beautiful 00:51:48.15\00:51:52.06 array of rocks and crystals and polished gems, 00:51:52.07\00:51:55.87 whole display cases. 00:51:55.88\00:51:57.38 And there was one case in particular 00:51:57.39\00:51:59.68 that caught my attention and it was the Beryl stone. 00:51:59.69\00:52:03.19 There was a huge window, 00:52:03.20\00:52:06.31 displaying every hue of the rainbow 00:52:06.32\00:52:09.23 of the Beryl stone that you can possibly imagine. 00:52:09.24\00:52:12.48 The Emerald is a Beryl stone. 00:52:12.49\00:52:14.89 Some of these stones were pure, clear see through. 00:52:14.90\00:52:17.81 They look like diamonds. 00:52:17.82\00:52:18.81 Others were pale pink, amber, blue, purple, grey, 00:52:18.82\00:52:25.92 every imaginable, conceivable color you could imagine. 00:52:25.93\00:52:30.06 And the thing that I noticed about these stones 00:52:30.07\00:52:32.38 is that they have a little tag underneath 00:52:32.39\00:52:34.57 showing what the molecular formula-- 00:52:34.58\00:52:37.72 what the chemical formula 00:52:37.73\00:52:39.30 for these stones is and Beryl stone 00:52:39.31\00:52:41.65 is actually beryllium aluminum silicate 00:52:41.66\00:52:45.13 and it is a quite, quite a long formula. 00:52:45.14\00:52:47.74 The thing that perplexes me 00:52:47.75\00:52:50.17 about these stones is that even though 00:52:50.18\00:52:52.38 everyone was so dramatically different in color 00:52:52.39\00:52:56.27 and hue and transparency versus opaqueness, 00:52:56.28\00:53:00.69 that they were all the identical, 00:53:00.70\00:53:03.56 same structure, the same formula 00:53:03.57\00:53:07.19 for every one of these stones. 00:53:07.20\00:53:09.51 And I was standing there, 00:53:09.52\00:53:10.99 wondering how can this be? 00:53:11.00\00:53:12.86 How can this look so different? 00:53:12.87\00:53:16.40 This vast array of rocks 00:53:16.41\00:53:18.49 and yet they're all the same molecular formula 00:53:18.50\00:53:22.63 and finally I found a little card 00:53:22.64\00:53:25.50 on the corner that explained, why? 00:53:25.51\00:53:28.97 These stones have very slight rearrangements 00:53:28.98\00:53:34.30 of electrons due to imperfections 00:53:34.31\00:53:38.84 in the mother rock that they came from. 00:53:38.85\00:53:40.95 These stones come from different rocks 00:53:40.96\00:53:43.35 and they were imperfections 00:53:43.36\00:53:45.22 in the arrangement of the electrons in these rocks 00:53:45.23\00:53:49.10 and because of that rearrangement of the electrons 00:53:49.11\00:53:53.84 it makes the light hit these rocks differently, 00:53:53.85\00:53:56.21 it makes them grow differently, 00:53:56.22\00:53:57.73 and therefore they're dramatically 00:53:57.74\00:53:59.85 different in the way that they look. 00:53:59.86\00:54:02.50 Now, what is the lesson for us? 00:54:02.51\00:54:08.07 The imperfections that we come 00:54:08.08\00:54:10.68 to God's church with are many. 00:54:10.69\00:54:15.30 They are many. Just like these rocks. 00:54:15.31\00:54:18.36 There are very few Beryl stones 00:54:18.37\00:54:20.91 that are pure crystal with no color, 00:54:20.92\00:54:24.45 most of them have color. 00:54:24.46\00:54:26.28 We cannot escape the fact 00:54:26.29\00:54:29.02 that the scars of sin are with us. 00:54:29.03\00:54:32.05 We know things that we wish we didn't know. 00:54:32.06\00:54:35.69 We've done things that we wish we hadn't. 00:54:35.70\00:54:38.91 We've had experiences that have changed us. 00:54:38.92\00:54:42.16 It's moved our spiritual and physical electrons around. 00:54:42.17\00:54:49.50 How can this knowledge of sin be turned 00:54:49.51\00:54:52.18 into glory and victory and beauty 00:54:52.19\00:54:56.53 and I'm gonna explain how. 00:54:56.54\00:54:59.40 Memory is very plastic. 00:54:59.41\00:55:02.71 Now what is plastic mean? 00:55:02.72\00:55:05.64 It means malleable, it means changeable. 00:55:05.65\00:55:08.45 Now your memories are dependent 00:55:08.46\00:55:12.88 on what you're thinking and feeling right now. 00:55:12.89\00:55:15.04 In other words, if you're in a totally bad mood 00:55:15.05\00:55:18.45 and I mention grandmother. 00:55:18.46\00:55:21.00 You don't have a grandmother spot in your brain, 00:55:21.01\00:55:23.00 your hippocampus goes to all the different parts 00:55:23.01\00:55:25.33 of your brain that remember all the different aspects 00:55:25.34\00:55:27.71 associated with grandmother 00:55:27.72\00:55:29.76 and pulls it together for an impression 00:55:29.77\00:55:32.32 or association about grandmother. 00:55:32.33\00:55:34.02 If you're in a bad mood, 00:55:34.03\00:55:35.68 you're gonna think of the time 00:55:35.69\00:55:37.04 that she made you sit 00:55:37.05\00:55:38.13 in the hardwood chair and it levered. 00:55:38.14\00:55:42.31 If you're in a good mood, 00:55:42.32\00:55:43.97 you're gonna be thinking about 00:55:43.98\00:55:45.07 how you used to sit on her lap, read stories, 00:55:45.08\00:55:47.10 and breathe her lilac perfume and eat her cookies. 00:55:47.11\00:55:53.10 When we have traumatic memories? 00:55:53.11\00:55:57.30 Really painful things that we have to-- 00:55:57.31\00:55:59.49 that have changed us 00:55:59.50\00:56:00.87 and moved our electrons around. 00:56:00.88\00:56:03.29 The Bible says, all things 00:56:03.30\00:56:05.21 work together for good, right? 00:56:05.22\00:56:07.96 No, that's not right. That is not right. 00:56:07.97\00:56:10.86 No, there's a big qualifier there. 00:56:10.87\00:56:13.44 It says all things work together for good 00:56:13.45\00:56:15.81 to those that love God 00:56:15.82\00:56:17.32 and are the called according to his purpose. 00:56:17.33\00:56:20.45 How can one think? 00:56:20.46\00:56:23.06 You know, I hated when people say, 00:56:23.07\00:56:24.50 well God meant that for your good. 00:56:24.51\00:56:27.21 You know, here some little kid that's been molested 00:56:27.22\00:56:29.24 or will God let that happen to you 00:56:29.25\00:56:30.68 for your good. It's awful. 00:56:30.69\00:56:33.99 You know, he didn't mean, 00:56:34.00\00:56:35.06 he doesn't mean for those things to happen-- 00:56:35.07\00:56:36.94 he can make it work for your good. 00:56:36.95\00:56:40.19 But those things, he doesn't ordain that, that happen, 00:56:40.20\00:56:44.30 that would be cruelty. 00:56:44.31\00:56:47.45 He says, you come to me 00:56:47.46\00:56:50.34 and you air that memory out in the light of my verge. 00:56:50.35\00:56:54.54 And you talk to me about what happened 00:56:54.55\00:56:56.14 in the light of my word 00:56:56.15\00:56:57.41 and I'll help you to understand the sin problem 00:56:57.42\00:56:59.39 and I will help you to understand how, 00:56:59.40\00:57:01.63 when parents go astray 00:57:01.64\00:57:03.14 and when they don't watch their children, 00:57:03.15\00:57:04.31 and when these things happen that Satan comes in 00:57:04.32\00:57:07.11 and I will show you my power, 00:57:07.12\00:57:11.63 to work in spite of this evil 00:57:11.64\00:57:13.44 that is in this world and that has afflicted and hurt you 00:57:13.45\00:57:17.07 then we are allowing God to remake our memories. 00:57:17.08\00:57:19.77 Now that memory has value. 00:57:19.78\00:57:23.12 Because it can work for good. 00:57:23.13\00:57:24.80 You know, the best people 00:57:24.81\00:57:25.85 to work with alcoholics are ex-alcoholics. 00:57:25.86\00:57:29.37 The best people to work with eating disorder 00:57:29.38\00:57:31.29 people are ex-eating disorder people. 00:57:31.30\00:57:35.72 There is nothing worse than a technician work 00:57:35.73\00:57:38.18 with somebody with an eating disorder or skinny guy, 00:57:38.19\00:57:41.13 you know just sit down and be quiet. 00:57:41.14\00:57:43.82 You do not understand 00:57:43.83\00:57:46.29 or maybe there are some out there. 00:57:46.30\00:57:48.03 I don't want to exaggerate, 00:57:48.04\00:57:49.13 but what I'm saying is, 00:57:49.14\00:57:51.34 is that God can take any experience that we've had 00:57:51.35\00:57:54.58 no matter how horrible it is and put a hue on it 00:57:54.59\00:57:58.64 and a perceptive and a depth and a wisdom 00:57:58.65\00:58:01.36 and give you a ministry. 00:58:01.37\00:58:03.03 And now you will be a terror to evil. 00:58:03.04\00:58:07.51 You'll have something very special that no one else has. 00:58:07.52\00:58:10.41 So instead of being a shame and degraded and feeling 00:58:10.42\00:58:13.29 like you're less of a person 00:58:13.30\00:58:14.76 and less favored and less blessed. 00:58:14.77\00:58:16.42 No, he has turned that curse into a blessing. 00:58:16.43\00:58:20.23 And that's what we need to let him do 00:58:20.24\00:58:22.31 with traumatic memories. 00:58:22.32\00:58:25.00 There are those of you here today, 00:58:25.01\00:58:29.92 Debra, if you would slip up. 00:58:29.93\00:58:34.45 There are those of you here today 00:58:34.46\00:58:36.93 who have had traumatic memories. 00:58:36.94\00:58:41.14 And those memories have not been healed. 00:58:41.15\00:58:43.56 We cannot dig a hole and bury them, 00:58:43.57\00:58:46.43 they don't go away. 00:58:46.44\00:58:49.14 But God can heal, he can recover. 00:58:49.15\00:58:52.78
