Scattered across the globe, Adventist World Aviation 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.63 has mission outposts strategically placed 00:00:03.67\00:00:06.37 in rural locations. 00:00:06.40\00:00:08.30 Often, aviation is the only way to reach these remote villages, 00:00:08.34\00:00:12.31 tucked away within jungles, 00:00:12.34\00:00:14.31 or scattered along rural tundras. 00:00:14.34\00:00:17.28 AWA connects the inhabitants of these villages 00:00:17.31\00:00:20.08 with the care that they need by employing aircraft. 00:00:20.12\00:00:23.89 Traveling great distances, AWA missionaries 00:00:23.92\00:00:26.86 become a lifeline to those who are in dire need. 00:00:26.89\00:00:31.09 Adventist World Aviation is dedicated to saving people 00:00:31.13\00:00:34.30 both physically and eternally. 00:00:34.33\00:00:37.13 With aviation, AWA can reach those 00:00:37.17\00:00:40.44 off the beaten track 00:00:40.47\00:00:42.20 and share the love of Jesus to the seemingly unreachable 00:00:42.24\00:00:45.81 of this world. 00:00:45.84\00:00:47.51 The LaBore Family has served 00:01:31.95\00:01:33.32 as Adventist World Aviation missionaries 00:01:33.36\00:01:35.56 for many years. 00:01:35.59\00:01:37.13 They began their ministry working in Guyana 00:01:37.16\00:01:39.43 as pilot missionaries, 00:01:39.46\00:01:41.00 and dedicated 10 years of service 00:01:41.03\00:01:42.90 to ministering to the Guyanese Amerindian people. 00:01:42.93\00:01:46.17 A couple of years ago, Bill and Laura felt God 00:01:46.20\00:01:48.67 calling them in a different direction. 00:01:48.70\00:01:50.97 They faithfully made the difficult decision 00:01:51.01\00:01:53.11 to leave Guyana and travel to a new mission field 00:01:53.14\00:01:56.08 on the other side of the world. 00:01:56.11\00:01:57.98 All four LaBore Family members moved to the Philippines, 00:01:58.01\00:02:00.92 to the island of Palawan 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.65 to begin another mission project 00:02:02.68\00:02:04.25 in the rural community of Sapangan. 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.09 They are joining local AWA missionaries, 00:02:07.12\00:02:09.96 Christine and the Espinosa Family 00:02:09.99\00:02:12.36 who have been working here for many years. 00:02:12.39\00:02:14.86 The LaBores know that God called them 00:02:14.90\00:02:16.63 to make this transition to this new land 00:02:16.67\00:02:19.63 and are excited about the future 00:02:19.67\00:02:21.10 Adventist World Aviation mission base. 00:02:21.14\00:02:23.61 The Philippines is an amazing mission field, 00:02:23.64\00:02:26.44 there are over 7,000 islands located here. 00:02:26.47\00:02:29.64 Palawan, the island that we're on right now 00:02:29.68\00:02:32.15 is actually strategically located 00:02:32.18\00:02:34.25 in a perfect position for what we want to do here. 00:02:34.28\00:02:36.79 There are over 1,000 islands just around this island alone 00:02:36.82\00:02:39.99 that have people on them 00:02:40.02\00:02:41.36 that not all of them are inhabited, 00:02:41.39\00:02:42.72 but many are. 00:02:42.76\00:02:44.09 There are Adventist believers in some of these areas, 00:02:44.13\00:02:45.96 and some areas they know nothing about 00:02:45.99\00:02:48.06 the Three Angels' Messages or Adventism. 00:02:48.10\00:02:50.30 And we have a great opportunity to go out 00:02:50.33\00:02:52.17 and begin supporting these islands 00:02:52.20\00:02:54.30 and working with the local union mission and division 00:02:54.34\00:02:57.04 to start supplying their needs and bringing in people 00:02:57.07\00:03:00.44 to assist in some of these areas. 00:03:00.48\00:03:02.18 When the LaBores arrived, 00:03:02.21\00:03:03.68 they were greeted by the Espinosa Family. 00:03:03.71\00:03:06.18 The Espinosas have been faithfully working 00:03:06.21\00:03:08.25 with the local community 00:03:08.28\00:03:09.82 while they eagerly awaited project managers to join them 00:03:09.85\00:03:13.15 and to grow the project. 00:03:13.19\00:03:14.86 Edgar is a pastor and he is our base manager here. 00:03:14.89\00:03:19.73 He has kept the spark alive in this property, 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.80 has been managing our property that we've had here 00:03:21.83\00:03:23.67 for about 10 years. 00:03:23.70\00:03:26.84 Keeping it active, keeping it clean, 00:03:26.87\00:03:28.37 watching over it, making sure that, 00:03:28.40\00:03:30.74 you know, it's protected 00:03:30.77\00:03:32.11 and now that we're here I'm even more impressed 00:03:32.14\00:03:35.74 with his abilities. 00:03:35.78\00:03:37.11 Both he and Raylene are a great team. 00:03:37.15\00:03:40.38 Raylene supports him in many ways 00:03:40.42\00:03:42.42 and they work together 00:03:42.45\00:03:43.99 and this team we've had here 00:03:44.02\00:03:45.35 there's been so much work to do. 00:03:45.39\00:03:46.72 Having Edgar is irreplaceable, so we're grateful 00:03:46.76\00:03:51.43 for his expertise and also 00:03:51.46\00:03:54.96 I know I'm gonna learn guitar from playing, 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.60 from being with him as he plays excellent guitar, 00:03:56.63\00:03:58.57 as does Raylene. 00:03:58.60\00:04:00.04 And also, you know, he's a good pastor 00:04:00.07\00:04:03.64 and he's done a lot. 00:04:03.67\00:04:05.01 He's started a church here and very active 00:04:05.04\00:04:08.41 with other churches also 00:04:08.44\00:04:09.78 and working with people in the area. 00:04:09.81\00:04:11.15 He's a true evangelist. And so we appreciate him. 00:04:11.18\00:04:13.52 And I really am going to enjoy living out here with them 00:04:13.55\00:04:16.95 and working with them, so. 00:04:16.99\00:04:18.55 And we're happy that the LaBore's Family 00:04:18.59\00:04:20.72 are already here. 00:04:20.76\00:04:22.09 We've been waiting for it to come 00:04:22.12\00:04:25.16 because of many years 00:04:25.19\00:04:26.76 of without any monitor, you know. 00:04:26.80\00:04:30.20 We'll start the operation of flying the plane 00:04:30.23\00:04:36.71 and go to different places to help this, 00:04:36.74\00:04:43.31 the people in the Philippines 00:04:43.35\00:04:46.05 and we are so excited. 00:04:46.08\00:04:48.35 Although many think of the Philippines 00:04:48.38\00:04:50.09 as tropical paradise, many areas in the Philippines 00:04:50.12\00:04:53.39 suffer greatly from poverty and illnesses. 00:04:53.42\00:04:56.52 In the remote regions, most people live in bamboo huts 00:04:56.56\00:05:00.33 and do not have access to employment, 00:05:00.36\00:05:02.33 education or the gospel. 00:05:02.36\00:05:04.20 These islands are an ideal location 00:05:04.23\00:05:06.33 for an aviation mission base. 00:05:06.37\00:05:08.34 Adventist World Aviation strongly believes 00:05:08.37\00:05:10.51 in spreading the gospel, 00:05:10.54\00:05:12.04 and bringing hope to all people, 00:05:12.07\00:05:14.04 regardless of how difficult it is to reach them. 00:05:14.08\00:05:16.75 Sapangan is a small town where we live. 00:05:16.78\00:05:19.98 We live in between where the main road is, 00:05:20.02\00:05:23.05 you cut off on a dirt road to go into the main town 00:05:23.08\00:05:26.05 and where our airstrip is in between there. 00:05:26.09\00:05:28.72 The people all got together and sold us pieces 00:05:28.76\00:05:32.26 of their land to make this possible, 00:05:32.29\00:05:33.83 which we're very, very grateful for. 00:05:33.86\00:05:36.03 And Sapangan is very much more of a poor community. 00:05:36.06\00:05:39.90 Almost all the homes are bamboo. 00:05:39.93\00:05:41.90 And people live at poverty level. 00:05:41.94\00:05:45.01 And they have a school there that AWA was actually 00:05:45.04\00:05:48.31 instrumental in helping to build about 10 years ago. 00:05:48.34\00:05:51.98 The area that we're in right here is a very, 00:05:52.01\00:05:54.35 very poor remote area. 00:05:54.38\00:05:55.95 There are bamboo huts all around us, 00:05:55.98\00:05:57.45 that's how people live here and there is a great need 00:05:57.49\00:06:01.49 for aviation support not only in the mountains 00:06:01.52\00:06:04.79 but even on the low lands on this island. 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.93 When people get into trouble, they need to get, 00:06:06.96\00:06:09.43 many backed out, there are snakes here, 00:06:09.46\00:06:11.07 there's malaria here, there's dengue fever. 00:06:11.10\00:06:13.07 There's a number of diseases that sometimes need 00:06:13.10\00:06:15.84 serious medical attention not to mention maternity cases. 00:06:15.87\00:06:19.54 So aviation support is a way that we can ease 00:06:19.57\00:06:22.54 some of these problems and help people get 00:06:22.58\00:06:24.18 to the help that they need. 00:06:24.21\00:06:25.55 The Adventist World Aviation Philippines project 00:06:25.58\00:06:28.25 has been in existence for over 10 years. 00:06:28.28\00:06:30.65 However, the project has not always thrived. 00:06:30.69\00:06:33.76 The LaBore Family are excited about taking this project 00:06:33.79\00:06:36.52 to the next level, and through God's blessing, 00:06:36.56\00:06:39.79 growing it to meet its full potential. 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.66 We're just really excited to be here. 00:06:42.70\00:06:45.07 We've been waiting for several years 00:06:45.10\00:06:46.60 to make the transition from Guyana to the Philippines 00:06:46.63\00:06:49.80 we saw such a need here. 00:06:49.84\00:06:51.71 And we're just excited to be here 00:06:51.74\00:06:53.68 and to pick up the project and take it to new levels. 00:06:53.71\00:06:57.85 The idea that you know, we might be able to be involved 00:06:57.88\00:07:01.18 in some small way of really bringing this thing to fruition 00:07:01.22\00:07:04.75 maybe to the plan that God originally had for it. 00:07:04.79\00:07:06.76 It is emotional and it's, I think there's no better place 00:07:11.16\00:07:14.56 to be than in the center of God's will. 00:07:14.60\00:07:16.33 And when you know that this is where God wants you. 00:07:16.36\00:07:18.63 There's a sense of connection you feel with the Lord 00:07:18.67\00:07:21.97 and that to me, it means a lot. 00:07:22.00\00:07:23.71 I just... 00:07:23.74\00:07:25.07 that's why I'm a missionary, to be honest with you. 00:07:25.11\00:07:26.44 I just like to... 00:07:26.47\00:07:27.81 I like to see God work, I like to be in situations 00:07:27.84\00:07:30.65 where I know I can't do it, that God's gonna have to work 00:07:30.68\00:07:32.91 and do it and I can see him do things that just, 00:07:32.95\00:07:35.48 you just don't get to see back home often. 00:07:35.52\00:07:37.72 The LaBore Family have a lot of work ahead of them. 00:07:37.75\00:07:40.66 It is not easy being new in a foreign country 00:07:40.69\00:07:43.22 where you don't speak the local language. 00:07:43.26\00:07:45.43 One of their first focuses is getting involved 00:07:45.46\00:07:47.66 in their community. 00:07:47.70\00:07:49.10 They want to begin developing relationships 00:07:49.13\00:07:51.23 and friendships. 00:07:51.27\00:07:52.60 We've been trying to integrate our self into the community. 00:07:52.63\00:07:55.20 It's been a little hard because every day 00:07:55.24\00:07:57.24 we're building and painting and things like that. 00:07:57.27\00:08:00.24 But we've been able to go out and do some medical outreach 00:08:00.28\00:08:04.01 in church, they immediately integrate you 00:08:04.05\00:08:06.31 with special music and I don't even sing, 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.72 and all kinds of things. 00:08:09.75\00:08:11.22 Children's Sabbath school, I found out about 20 seconds 00:08:11.25\00:08:14.89 before that I was gonna lead Children's Sabbath School 00:08:14.92\00:08:16.96 things like that. 00:08:16.99\00:08:18.33 So we are jumping in with both feet. 00:08:18.36\00:08:21.03 The Philippines are 7,000 islands 00:08:21.06\00:08:23.16 and 90 million people. 00:08:23.20\00:08:24.83 There's so much work. 00:08:24.87\00:08:26.20 Just when I look around here, I see so much work that needs 00:08:26.23\00:08:29.10 to be done in the village. 00:08:29.14\00:08:31.54 I can't wait to go out and do 00:08:31.57\00:08:32.91 more medical work with the people 00:08:32.94\00:08:34.28 and just get to know them on a personal level. 00:08:34.31\00:08:36.61 Bill and Laura each have unique skill sets 00:08:36.64\00:08:39.28 that they use to integrate into the community 00:08:39.31\00:08:41.98 and to grow the mission base. 00:08:42.02\00:08:43.75 Laura is a pilot and the nurse. 00:08:43.79\00:08:46.02 Bill is a project manager and the Bible worker. 00:08:46.05\00:08:48.99 As soon as they arrive to the area, 00:08:49.02\00:08:51.06 they put their talents to work. 00:08:51.09\00:08:52.86 Bill began visiting different churches 00:08:52.89\00:08:55.23 and sharing the gospel. 00:08:55.26\00:08:56.77 He would also travel to remote villages 00:08:56.80\00:08:58.90 and go to people's homes to give Bible studies. 00:08:58.93\00:09:02.10 It didn't take long for the word to travel. 00:09:02.14\00:09:04.57 And before long, Bill had a full schedule of people 00:09:04.61\00:09:07.34 asking for him to come and share biblical truths 00:09:07.38\00:09:10.85 in their churches and homes. 00:09:10.88\00:09:12.71 Sharing the gospel is one of Bill's 00:09:12.75\00:09:14.55 favorite things to do. 00:09:14.58\00:09:16.05 Bill is really excited to get into Bible studies. 00:09:16.08\00:09:19.55 He loves doing that sort of thing. 00:09:19.59\00:09:21.62 And, of course, he's already been involved in preaching, 00:09:21.66\00:09:25.86 but he's really looking forward to getting to know the people 00:09:25.89\00:09:28.46 on a one to one basis 00:09:28.50\00:09:29.83 and ministering to them that way. 00:09:29.86\00:09:31.40 If I were to summarize, the key to being 00:09:31.43\00:09:35.17 a good missionary, it's really simple. 00:09:35.20\00:09:37.81 It's simply relationship building. 00:09:37.84\00:09:39.47 The bottom line is we're trying to build relationships here 00:09:39.51\00:09:41.58 so we can share with them the good news that Jesus Christ 00:09:41.61\00:09:43.95 is coming back again, very soon, 00:09:43.98\00:09:46.08 and we're all going to be together one day 00:09:46.11\00:09:47.85 and never have to part again. 00:09:47.88\00:09:49.22 That'll be a great day. 00:09:49.25\00:09:50.95 Laura also keeps a very busy ministry schedule. 00:09:50.99\00:09:54.16 Every spare opportunity she finds, 00:09:54.19\00:09:56.46 Laura packs her backpack with her medical instruments 00:09:56.49\00:09:59.29 and ventures into new villages. 00:09:59.33\00:10:01.23 She walks the streets of the villages 00:10:01.26\00:10:03.23 and offers to check blood pressures 00:10:03.26\00:10:05.17 and blood sugars to those who comes in contact with. 00:10:05.20\00:10:08.84 Her trips are twofold, first, 00:10:08.87\00:10:10.87 she wants to get a better understanding 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.64 of the area 00:10:12.67\00:10:14.01 and learn which communities need the most help. 00:10:14.04\00:10:16.71 She also uses this opportunity to interact with people 00:10:16.75\00:10:20.02 and introduce herself and her family 00:10:20.05\00:10:22.35 to those she comes in contact with. 00:10:22.38\00:10:24.52 I will be using some of my nursing skills 00:10:24.55\00:10:27.16 in the community. 00:10:27.19\00:10:28.69 I want to do as much work on the ground as I can 00:10:28.72\00:10:31.19 and get to know the people 00:10:31.23\00:10:33.19 and just really start reaching out to them. 00:10:33.23\00:10:34.83 Today, Laura is venturing out again in her community 00:10:47.34\00:10:51.08 of Sapangan. 00:10:51.11\00:10:52.55 She asks Raylene to join her to help her translate 00:10:52.58\00:10:55.95 some of the medical terminology. 00:10:55.98\00:10:58.12 The two women take off on foot down the dusty road 00:10:58.15\00:11:01.02 toward town. 00:11:01.06\00:11:02.52 As they walk through the streets, 00:11:02.56\00:11:04.33 villages pair out to their bamboo huts. 00:11:04.36\00:11:06.73 They stop from house to house and ask if they would like 00:11:06.76\00:11:10.37 Laura to do a quick medical checkup. 00:11:10.40\00:11:12.90 I went out with Raylene to take blood pressures 00:11:12.93\00:11:15.64 and blood sugars in the community. 00:11:15.67\00:11:17.11 Yeah, it's such a great way to get to know people 00:11:17.14\00:11:19.01 because medical care here is not free. 00:11:19.04\00:11:23.31 And a lot of people can't afford that. 00:11:23.35\00:11:25.08 And so, if we go door to door and just say, 00:11:25.11\00:11:27.55 "Can we check your pressure and your sugar?" 00:11:27.58\00:11:29.12 They're delighted to let you in and we can pray with them. 00:11:29.15\00:11:32.15 It's a great way of opening doors. 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.39 After visiting a few homes, Laura and Raylene hear 00:11:34.42\00:11:37.99 that there's an elderly gentleman 00:11:38.03\00:11:40.16 who is homebound that would 00:11:40.20\00:11:41.90 greatly like to be seen by Nurse Laura. 00:11:41.93\00:11:45.07 When they arrive at his home, 00:11:45.10\00:11:46.43 he's awaiting them outside of his bamboo hut. 00:11:46.47\00:11:49.20 He's very happy that they were able to find him. 00:11:49.24\00:11:52.17 Raylene asks him how he is feeling. 00:11:52.21\00:11:55.11 He has complaints of dizziness and fatigue. 00:11:55.14\00:11:58.55 One of the houses we visited there is an elderly gentleman, 00:11:58.58\00:12:01.75 he was about 82. 00:12:01.78\00:12:03.15 And I took his pressure and sugar and his... 00:12:03.18\00:12:06.92 they're just a little bit high but what concerned me 00:12:06.96\00:12:09.19 is he had an irregular heart rhythm very, very fast. 00:12:09.22\00:12:13.66 This patient understands some English, 00:12:13.70\00:12:16.06 so Laura is able to communicate with him. 00:12:16.10\00:12:18.70 She asks him questions about his symptoms, 00:12:18.73\00:12:21.40 where he has pain, and how long he has felt this way. 00:12:21.44\00:12:25.07 He says he has a history of high blood pressure, 00:12:25.11\00:12:27.88 but his readings are within range. 00:12:27.91\00:12:30.05 When she listens to his heartbeat 00:12:30.08\00:12:31.98 she gets an indication as to why he's feeling 00:12:32.01\00:12:34.38 so poorly. 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.15 You have any pain in here? Does that hurt? 00:12:36.18\00:12:39.59 Where? Right here? 00:12:39.62\00:12:42.06 Here and here, okay. 00:12:45.06\00:12:46.70 Does it hurt when I do this? 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.36 Does it hurt when I do that? 00:12:49.40\00:12:51.43 Sometimes? 00:12:51.47\00:12:53.03 Your heart, when it beats, it's not consistent. 00:12:53.07\00:12:58.67 Your heart, it's like... 00:12:58.71\00:13:00.21 My pain is bit here. 00:13:03.24\00:13:05.41 Right. Your heart is having some troubles. 00:13:05.45\00:13:10.99 And so maybe that's why you're kind of dizzy. 00:13:11.02\00:13:14.36 He was complaining about feeling dizzy. 00:13:14.39\00:13:19.03 And he has a history of his pressure being 00:13:19.06\00:13:21.96 a little bit high. 00:13:22.00\00:13:23.37 The first time I took it, it wasn't showing that high 00:13:23.40\00:13:25.70 because his heart is really erratic. 00:13:25.73\00:13:30.31 So he really needs to get in to see the doctor. 00:13:30.34\00:13:34.91 Is there any way that you could go see a doctor? 00:13:34.94\00:13:36.81 I went to see a doctor some time ago. 00:13:39.75\00:13:42.75 For your heart? 00:13:42.78\00:13:44.59 I cannot go. You can't walk? 00:13:44.62\00:13:47.52 Because his heart is just... 00:13:47.56\00:13:49.39 That's how your heart is, it's fast, it's irregular. 00:13:52.63\00:13:56.26 So there's something that's not right 00:13:56.30\00:13:58.30 with your heart. 00:13:58.33\00:14:00.37 Okay, and so and you're feeling dizzy, 00:14:00.40\00:14:06.21 so you need to get in to see a doctor... 00:14:06.24\00:14:09.64 There is an Adventist Hospital in Puerto Princesa 00:14:09.68\00:14:12.51 which is about an hour and a half car ride 00:14:12.55\00:14:14.82 from Sapangan. 00:14:14.85\00:14:16.48 Most people do not have vehicles to drive, 00:14:16.52\00:14:19.09 so they must hire transportation or take a bus. 00:14:19.12\00:14:21.89 You said you can't go to the hospital? 00:14:23.49\00:14:25.29 You can't... You said he can't. 00:14:28.33\00:14:30.27 Sometimes I go to hospital. Sometimes you go? 00:14:33.87\00:14:37.31 Yes, I go to hospital a bit. 00:14:37.34\00:14:39.84 How do you get to the hospital when you go? 00:14:39.87\00:14:44.28 Long time? Okay. 00:14:44.31\00:14:47.12 How do you go? 00:14:47.15\00:14:48.48 When you go to the hospital how do you get there? 00:14:48.52\00:14:51.72 Tricycle? 00:14:51.75\00:14:53.76 By tricycle. By tricycle? Okay. 00:14:53.79\00:14:56.76 If he's going to the doctor, the doctor needs money. 00:14:56.79\00:15:00.96 Right. 00:15:01.00\00:15:02.66 The round trip cost to get to the hospital 00:15:02.70\00:15:05.27 is out of reach for many in this community, 00:15:05.30\00:15:08.27 especially the elderly, 00:15:08.30\00:15:10.04 even if they could get to the hospital, 00:15:10.07\00:15:12.37 the Philippines does not provide free health care. 00:15:12.41\00:15:15.58 So this patient cannot afford to pay for any of the testing 00:15:15.61\00:15:18.95 or treatment that he needs. 00:15:18.98\00:15:20.52 The patient tells Laura that he cannot afford the costs 00:15:20.55\00:15:23.69 of going to see a doctor. 00:15:23.72\00:15:25.45 He also tells Laura that he cannot walk. 00:15:25.49\00:15:28.69 So travel is very difficult. 00:15:28.72\00:15:30.93 Laura must find another way to help this critically ill 00:15:30.96\00:15:34.56 elderly man. 00:15:34.60\00:15:35.93 This man needs to have his heart examined 00:15:35.96\00:15:38.53 to find out why he is having such 00:15:38.57\00:15:40.80 an irregular heartbeat. 00:15:40.84\00:15:42.34 Laura has heard from people in the community 00:15:42.37\00:15:45.11 that there's a naturalist doctor 00:15:45.14\00:15:46.68 a few villages over 00:15:46.71\00:15:48.38 that sees patients free of charge. 00:15:48.41\00:15:50.71 This doctor sees patients from his home 00:15:50.75\00:15:53.28 and he only offers consults and natural remedies. 00:15:53.31\00:15:57.02 Laura asks this man if he is interested 00:15:57.05\00:15:59.39 in seeing this doctor. 00:15:59.42\00:16:01.02 The man accepts the offer. 00:16:01.06\00:16:03.09 Laura wants this man to know 00:16:03.12\00:16:05.23 that she truly cares for his well-being. 00:16:05.26\00:16:07.63 She asks if she can pray with him before they leave. 00:16:07.66\00:16:11.13 And can I pray with you before we go? 00:16:11.17\00:16:14.20 God, we just love You so very, very much. 00:16:20.74\00:16:23.71 Thank You for Your love and Your mercies. 00:16:23.75\00:16:26.21 And I just pray that You'll heal brother here, Lord, 00:16:26.25\00:16:29.12 and help us to know how to help them 00:16:29.15\00:16:32.02 and may Your Spirit be upon him. 00:16:32.05\00:16:34.32 In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. 00:16:34.36\00:16:38.69 Okay. Lord, be in your heart. 00:16:38.73\00:16:40.80 Before they leave, the ladies leave this man's home 00:16:47.30\00:16:50.51 with a promise to locate the naturalist doctor 00:16:50.54\00:16:53.48 and arrange a visit. 00:16:53.51\00:16:55.14 Laura heads into town to try to track down 00:16:55.18\00:16:57.81 this doctor that she has only heard about. 00:16:57.85\00:17:00.65 As she drives through the town, 00:17:00.68\00:17:02.38 she stops people along the way to ask them 00:17:02.42\00:17:05.12 if anyone has heard of this doctor. 00:17:05.15\00:17:07.56 Each person directs them to another person to ask. 00:17:07.59\00:17:10.66 It's almost as if she's on a scavenger hunt 00:17:10.69\00:17:13.19 to find the doctor. 00:17:13.23\00:17:14.86 Laura is persistent. 00:17:14.90\00:17:16.50 And she finally finds someone 00:17:16.53\00:17:18.33 who knows where to find this doctor. 00:17:18.37\00:17:21.40 Two women graciously offer to drive Laura 00:17:21.44\00:17:23.87 to the farm outside of town where the doctor lives. 00:17:23.91\00:17:27.28 So Laura follows their motorcycle 00:17:27.31\00:17:29.61 as they twist and turn off the beaten path 00:17:29.64\00:17:32.01 in search of the doctor. 00:17:32.05\00:17:33.55 Finally, after many hours of searching, 00:17:33.58\00:17:36.12 they find the doctor's home. 00:17:36.15\00:17:38.52 Laura speaks with him and informs him 00:17:38.55\00:17:40.62 about the patient with the heart condition. 00:17:40.66\00:17:43.46 He agrees to see him tomorrow if Laura is willing 00:17:43.49\00:17:46.33 to bring the patient to him. 00:17:46.36\00:17:48.36 Of course, Laura agrees to transport the patient. 00:17:48.40\00:17:52.13 The next day Laura picks up the elderly man and his wife 00:17:52.17\00:17:55.24 and begins the journey to see Dr. Killman. 00:17:55.27\00:17:58.57 They are eager to see the doctor 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.64 and get some health advice. 00:18:00.68\00:18:02.68 Dr. Killman spends a couple hours 00:18:02.71\00:18:04.75 talking with the patient. 00:18:04.78\00:18:06.78 He reviews the patient's medical history 00:18:06.82\00:18:09.28 and asks him about his ailments. 00:18:09.32\00:18:12.15 After he has detailed information 00:18:12.19\00:18:13.82 about the patient, 00:18:13.86\00:18:15.19 he begins teaching the elder man, 00:18:15.22\00:18:17.39 the importance of diet and healthy lifestyle choices 00:18:17.43\00:18:21.63 that can help him. 00:18:21.66\00:18:23.03 Topics include proper fruits and veggies to eat, 00:18:23.06\00:18:26.10 making sure he is properly hydrated 00:18:26.13\00:18:28.74 and simple changes in his diet that will help him. 00:18:28.77\00:18:31.81 Since he knows that the patient does not have any extra money, 00:18:31.84\00:18:35.71 he also takes the time to teach him 00:18:35.74\00:18:38.18 about natural herbs growing in the wild that can help him. 00:18:38.21\00:18:42.28 The time they spent together is very detailed 00:18:42.32\00:18:45.32 and very informative. 00:18:45.35\00:18:47.09 However, even after the visit is complete, 00:18:47.12\00:18:50.23 both the doctor and Laura agreed that this elderly man 00:18:50.26\00:18:53.96 still needs to go to the hospital for testing. 00:18:54.00\00:18:57.20 Thankfully, God provides a way. 00:18:57.23\00:18:59.83 We were able to take him to a doctor who lives 00:18:59.87\00:19:03.07 not too far away here, who provides free care 00:19:03.10\00:19:06.54 and gave him advice on natural medicines. 00:19:06.57\00:19:11.05 But he also advised that he get an EKG. 00:19:11.08\00:19:13.88 Well, right around this area, there is no place for EKGs. 00:19:13.92\00:19:17.52 And so we are going to be taking him to Puerto Princesa, 00:19:17.55\00:19:22.92 which is the main city on this island. 00:19:22.96\00:19:25.16 It's an hour drive from where we live, 00:19:25.19\00:19:28.03 and we will be taking him into the hospital. 00:19:28.06\00:19:31.23 There's an Adventist Hospital, 00:19:31.27\00:19:32.87 where we are going to get him an EKG. 00:19:32.90\00:19:35.44 It's really hard, when a doctor's visit 00:19:35.47\00:19:38.44 is only about five dollars, 00:19:38.47\00:19:39.97 we could easily pay for somebody 00:19:40.01\00:19:41.41 to go see the doctor. 00:19:41.44\00:19:42.78 The problem is, if we do that for one person, 00:19:42.81\00:19:45.58 we're going to have a line at our door of the entire town 00:19:45.61\00:19:49.12 wanting free medical care. 00:19:49.15\00:19:50.49 We're going to give as much free care as we can ourselves, 00:19:50.52\00:19:53.59 but then when they need more care 00:19:53.62\00:19:56.66 we don't know exactly how we're gonna... 00:19:56.69\00:19:59.06 We just have to go out case by case scenario. 00:19:59.09\00:20:01.30 So we were really grateful when somebody from the States 00:20:01.33\00:20:03.77 stepped in and said that they'll provide 00:20:03.80\00:20:05.83 the medical care for this gentleman. 00:20:05.87\00:20:07.54 The work of Adventist World Aviation's missionaries 00:20:07.57\00:20:10.24 is fueled by donors all across North America. 00:20:10.27\00:20:13.78 Donations are what keep AWA's work 00:20:13.81\00:20:15.84 of carrying out the gospel moving forward. 00:20:15.88\00:20:18.85 This story is just one example of how AWA donors 00:20:18.88\00:20:22.32 are able to make a large impact 00:20:22.35\00:20:24.85 on hurting people all around the world. 00:20:24.89\00:20:27.86 Laura and Bill tell the elderly man 00:20:27.89\00:20:30.33 that a donation from the US was made in his honor, 00:20:30.36\00:20:33.76 and that his medical bills will be covered. 00:20:33.80\00:20:36.20 This is life changing news for the ailing man. 00:20:36.23\00:20:39.30 He knows that God has miraculously blessed him. 00:20:39.33\00:20:42.17 This frail couple cannot make the trip 00:20:42.20\00:20:44.01 to Puerto Princesa alone. 00:20:44.04\00:20:46.34 The man's health is far too deteriorated, 00:20:46.37\00:20:49.04 so they offered to personally drive them 00:20:49.08\00:20:51.25 to the Adventist Hospital. 00:20:51.28\00:20:53.15 The couple Raylene Espinosa and Bill LaBore 00:20:53.18\00:20:56.15 make the journey together into the city. 00:20:56.18\00:20:58.89 As they arrive at the hospital they are greeted by Gae, 00:20:58.92\00:21:02.16 a local AWA volunteer 00:21:02.19\00:21:04.16 who works as a nurse at the hospital. 00:21:04.19\00:21:06.56 She has offered to personally assist the elderly man today 00:21:06.59\00:21:09.86 as he undergoes all his tests. 00:21:09.90\00:21:12.23 Her kind and caring personality 00:21:12.27\00:21:14.17 eases the elderly couple's tensions, 00:21:14.20\00:21:16.44 and they relax a bit, 00:21:16.47\00:21:17.87 knowing that they are in good hands. 00:21:17.91\00:21:20.18 After Gae gets them checked in, 00:21:20.21\00:21:22.08 they're taken straight back to a private room 00:21:22.11\00:21:24.51 to see a doctor. 00:21:24.55\00:21:26.01 The doctor is able to get a more thorough idea 00:21:26.05\00:21:28.72 of what seems to be troubling the elderly man. 00:21:28.75\00:21:31.45 The doctor is concerned about his heart rhythm 00:21:31.49\00:21:33.96 and his persistent cough. 00:21:33.99\00:21:35.79 The heart rate seems normal to me at this 00:21:35.82\00:21:38.89 based on what I can hear, 00:21:38.93\00:21:41.56 but I still suggest to him get ECG 00:21:41.60\00:21:44.07 and then basic chest x-ray, 00:21:44.10\00:21:46.13 because that guy already has cough 00:21:46.17\00:21:48.80 and he has phlegm. 00:21:48.84\00:21:51.11 It looks like he's also a suspect for 00:21:51.14\00:21:54.58 any lung problem like, 00:21:54.61\00:21:57.88 the most common here is EDP tuberculosis. 00:21:57.91\00:22:00.98 Because this has been there like more than one month. 00:22:01.02\00:22:04.25 So a chronic cough always indicates chest x-ray, 00:22:04.29\00:22:08.29 at least here in the Philippines. 00:22:08.32\00:22:09.76 So we will be doing totally ECG and chest x-ray. 00:22:13.29\00:22:16.10 In this part of the Philippines, 00:22:16.13\00:22:17.63 tuberculosis is a common illness 00:22:17.67\00:22:19.63 that often goes untreated 00:22:19.67\00:22:21.30 simply because patients don't seek medical attention 00:22:21.34\00:22:24.17 due to financial restrictions. 00:22:24.21\00:22:26.37 In addition to the heart tests he's already scheduled, 00:22:26.41\00:22:29.54 the doctor wants to add a chest x-ray 00:22:29.58\00:22:31.61 to get a better view of the patient's lungs 00:22:31.65\00:22:34.02 and see if there are any signs of tuberculosis. 00:22:34.05\00:22:37.09 The doctor instructs Gae to take the patient 00:22:37.12\00:22:39.22 for his testing. 00:22:39.25\00:22:40.66 She cheerfully guides the patient from the exam room 00:22:40.69\00:22:43.59 to the diagnostics area of the hospital. 00:22:43.63\00:22:46.36 She will not leave this patient side 00:22:46.39\00:22:48.60 until all his testing is complete. 00:22:48.63\00:22:51.00 She waits with a couple outside the testing area 00:22:51.03\00:22:53.64 and makes lighthearted conversation 00:22:53.67\00:22:55.50 to ease any worry they might have. 00:22:55.54\00:22:57.97 Her bubbly personality eases all nervousness 00:22:58.01\00:23:00.41 this couple might have felt. 00:23:00.44\00:23:02.41 First on the list of tests is an EKG. 00:23:02.44\00:23:05.38 Gae and another nurse help the elderly man 00:23:05.41\00:23:07.98 on to the table. 00:23:08.02\00:23:09.42 They placed the electrodes on his body. 00:23:09.45\00:23:11.95 This electrocardiograph will record 00:23:11.99\00:23:14.49 the electrical activity of the heart 00:23:14.52\00:23:16.62 over a period of time using electrodes 00:23:16.66\00:23:19.19 strategically placed along the man's body. 00:23:19.23\00:23:22.03 These electrodes detect the tiny electrical changes 00:23:22.06\00:23:24.87 on the skin that arise from the heart muscles pattern 00:23:24.90\00:23:28.24 during each heartbeat. 00:23:28.27\00:23:29.70 This machine will be able to measure and report 00:23:29.74\00:23:32.31 his irregular heart rhythm. 00:23:32.34\00:23:34.24 After the test is complete, 00:23:34.28\00:23:36.01 the results are immediately sent to the doctor. 00:23:36.04\00:23:38.78 He reviews the results and feels confident 00:23:38.81\00:23:41.18 in a treatment plan. 00:23:41.22\00:23:42.88 He gives the patient the prescription 00:23:42.92\00:23:44.72 for ongoing maintenance. 00:23:44.75\00:23:46.12 Well, the patient had an EKG and a chest x-ray. 00:23:46.15\00:23:50.76 And we consulted the doctor and the doctor said 00:23:50.79\00:23:54.16 his heartbeat is normal regarding the ECG results 00:23:54.20\00:23:59.00 so the doctor will just be looking onto his ECG report, 00:23:59.03\00:24:05.07 and then I will just ask the doctor 00:24:05.11\00:24:09.24 regarding the result. 00:24:09.28\00:24:11.01 The doctor... 00:24:11.05\00:24:13.78 what we call this, gave him a... 00:24:13.82\00:24:16.35 prescribed him a medication called amlodipine 00:24:16.38\00:24:19.32 which is 10 milligram, 00:24:19.35\00:24:20.69 and he has to take it once a day 00:24:20.72\00:24:23.36 either in the morning or in the afternoon... 00:24:23.39\00:24:25.53 evening at least. 00:24:25.56\00:24:27.13 At least once a day per... 00:24:27.16\00:24:29.50 At least one tablet per day for 30 days 00:24:29.53\00:24:33.60 for his blood pressure, for his maintenance. 00:24:33.64\00:24:38.67 Next, Gae takes the man to get his x-ray 00:24:38.71\00:24:41.14 and other testing done. 00:24:41.18\00:24:42.94 It's a busy day at the hospital. 00:24:42.98\00:24:44.91 Yet her attention is strictly on this one patient. 00:24:44.95\00:24:48.02 Her shift ended hours ago, yet Gae remains 00:24:48.05\00:24:51.02 by this couple's side. 00:24:51.05\00:24:52.72 Christine, another AWA missionary 00:24:52.75\00:24:55.12 has also come to the hospital to show support 00:24:55.16\00:24:57.93 and encouragement to this elderly couple. 00:24:57.96\00:25:00.56 This couple is surrounded by love 00:25:00.60\00:25:02.46 from the Philippines AWA team. 00:25:02.50\00:25:04.90 They're moved beyond words, as they see the great lengths 00:25:04.93\00:25:08.70 that the AWA missionaries have gone through to help them. 00:25:08.74\00:25:12.07 Without a doubt, they strongly feel God's love 00:25:12.11\00:25:15.24 being poured on them. 00:25:15.28\00:25:17.08 Thank you so much. 00:25:19.41\00:25:21.45 He said thank you so much for the help. 00:25:21.48\00:25:24.59 He said thank you so much for your help. 00:25:24.62\00:25:26.49 Thank you, thank you very much for everything. 00:25:30.59\00:25:34.46 The patient and his wife are ready to go home. 00:25:34.50\00:25:36.97 The x-rays have been taken and they are waiting 00:25:37.00\00:25:39.53 for the results to be read. 00:25:39.57\00:25:41.27 Here's the film, initial. 00:25:41.30\00:25:43.61 So the reading will be... 00:25:43.64\00:25:46.01 The reading will be after two days 00:25:46.04\00:25:48.68 or maybe tomorrow. 00:25:48.71\00:25:50.05 Bill and Gae talk about the treatment plan 00:25:53.31\00:25:55.65 and the medications prescribed. 00:25:55.68\00:25:57.59 Bill wants to have a full understanding of his condition, 00:25:57.62\00:26:00.62 so he can help keep an eye on him 00:26:00.66\00:26:02.66 once they get back to their home village. 00:26:02.69\00:26:05.13 After a battery of tests and exams, 00:26:05.16\00:26:07.36 they can now return home. 00:26:07.40\00:26:09.23 This man has undergone all his tests 00:26:09.26\00:26:11.57 and been given heart medications. 00:26:11.60\00:26:13.74 The results are not yet back from his lung x-ray, 00:26:13.77\00:26:16.74 but they feel that he is healthy enough 00:26:16.77\00:26:18.71 to be discharged. 00:26:18.74\00:26:20.28 The patients say goodbye to Gae 00:26:20.31\00:26:22.34 and gratefully thank her for all her help today. 00:26:22.38\00:26:25.35 As they load the patients back into the truck, 00:26:25.38\00:26:28.05 the elderly man has a peaceful countenance on his face. 00:26:28.08\00:26:31.72 He knows that God sent these AWA missionaries to help him 00:26:31.75\00:26:35.99 and he feels secure in knowing that God is watching over him. 00:26:36.02\00:26:40.20 Stories like the one from today happen daily 00:26:40.23\00:26:42.80 at AWA mission bases all around the world. 00:26:42.83\00:26:46.03 Missionaries are on the frontlines 00:26:46.07\00:26:48.30 working to help save people's lives 00:26:48.34\00:26:50.71 both physically and eternally. 00:26:50.74\00:26:53.27 By showing love and compassion for sick and hurting people, 00:26:53.31\00:26:56.81 we are able to be Jesus' hands and feet here on earth. 00:26:56.85\00:27:01.28 A medical work just opens up doors to people's hearts. 00:27:01.32\00:27:04.25 And we've enjoyed going 00:27:04.29\00:27:06.42 and getting involved with people 00:27:06.45\00:27:08.29 on a one to one basis. 00:27:08.32\00:27:09.66 And we're looking forward 00:27:09.69\00:27:11.66 to where those doors are gonna lead. 00:27:11.69\00:27:14.33 Right now we have plans 00:27:14.36\00:27:16.20 of goals that we want to achieve. 00:27:16.23\00:27:17.93 But, you know, when you're working for God, 00:27:17.97\00:27:19.53 you just never know what's going to happen. 00:27:19.57\00:27:21.64 And I know that as we step forward, 00:27:21.67\00:27:23.61 God's going to open more and more doors, 00:27:23.64\00:27:25.84 and more and more opportunities. 00:27:25.87\00:27:28.01 And I believe this project is going to take on 00:27:28.04\00:27:30.18 a whole dimension that we never even believed was possible. 00:27:30.21\00:27:33.85 Well, if you summarize it, you know, a project like this, 00:27:33.88\00:27:36.35 you know, what is the ultimate goal? 00:27:36.38\00:27:37.82 I mean, it's really very simple. 00:27:37.85\00:27:39.85 I mean, the whole idea behind all this, 00:27:39.89\00:27:41.99 it's not about airplanes, it's not about medical work, 00:27:42.02\00:27:44.89 it's not about even outreach, 00:27:44.93\00:27:46.26 all these things we have to do and support. 00:27:46.29\00:27:49.26 But the idea is to show people 00:27:49.30\00:27:53.64 that there is a God that loves them, 00:27:53.67\00:27:55.37 and through our actions, 00:27:55.40\00:27:59.57 not just by thumping a Bible over their head 00:27:59.61\00:28:01.24 but by actually demonstrating that we care about them. 00:28:01.28\00:28:04.91 And we're here to help them, we're here to serve them. 00:28:04.95\00:28:09.48 That is what's going to break down barriers. 00:28:09.52\00:28:11.52 The goal is to take as many people with us 00:28:11.55\00:28:14.06 as we can to God's kingdom. 00:28:14.09\00:28:15.82 I mean, there's no other reason for us being here. 00:28:15.86\00:28:18.46 If we're not doing that, we're just wasting time. 00:28:18.49\00:28:21.10 It boils down to the fact that we want to share God's love. 00:28:21.13\00:28:25.07 And we have to do mission aviation, medical work, 00:28:25.10\00:28:27.57 and I wish to do that, well, 00:28:27.60\00:28:28.94 then that's what we're going to do. 00:28:28.97\00:28:30.31 And I believe that is the ultimate vehicle 00:28:30.34\00:28:31.67 that we will use. 00:28:31.71\00:28:33.04 But I know for a fact that there are people 00:28:33.07\00:28:35.61 all over these islands where the Holy Spirit 00:28:35.64\00:28:37.85 has been working with them. 00:28:37.88\00:28:40.08 Ultimately, that's what we want. 00:28:40.12\00:28:41.45 We want to bring peace to people's lives. 00:28:41.48\00:28:42.82 We want to help them understand 00:28:42.85\00:28:44.19 that there's a God that loves them 00:28:44.22\00:28:45.55 and in fact God Jesus is coming back again. 00:28:45.59\00:28:47.96 And He's gonna take all of us home to His kingdom rich 00:28:47.99\00:28:50.93 and poor, Filipino, American, doesn't matter who you are, 00:28:50.96\00:28:53.86 or what walk of life you come from, 00:28:53.90\00:28:56.33 He loves us all. 00:28:56.36\00:28:57.70
