Narrator: The life of a missionary in the remote 00:00:01.56\00:00:03.57 rural jungle is not an easy one. 00:00:03.60\00:00:06.00 The Hanley family have lived in Tranquera in the north-eastern 00:00:06.03\00:00:09.94 part of Nicaragua for 10 years. 00:00:09.97\00:00:12.27 During that time, their ministry has evolved into a multi-faceted 00:00:12.67\00:00:17.38 aviation project, that ministers to the indigenous Miskito people 00:00:17.41\00:00:22.75 Aviation humanitarian aid is the majority of the work, 00:00:23.25\00:00:27.36 that this project does. 00:00:27.39\00:00:29.32 Clint is a pilot and offers med-evac flights to all the 00:00:29.52\00:00:33.26 neighboring villages to transport patients to a higher 00:00:33.29\00:00:36.97 level of medical care. 00:00:37.00\00:00:38.73 There are no safe road systems from the thick jungles from 00:00:39.33\00:00:43.24 Puerto Cabezas, where the closest hospital equipped 00:00:43.27\00:00:47.01 to handle critical injuries is located. 00:00:47.04\00:00:49.71 Currently, this project is the only humanitarian aviation 00:00:50.31\00:00:53.82 support in the entire country. 00:00:53.85\00:00:56.35 There are no other aviation projects to help the people 00:00:56.75\00:00:59.59 in Nicaragua. 00:00:59.62\00:01:00.96 Clint: We devote a lot of our attention and time 00:01:01.32\00:01:04.26 to humanitarian aid. 00:01:04.29\00:01:05.69 The right hand arm of the gospel is being able 00:01:05.73\00:01:07.90 to help people medically. 00:01:07.93\00:01:09.83 And being able to offer them this help, and being able to 00:01:09.86\00:01:14.24 give them the hope, that they can have a better medical care 00:01:14.27\00:01:20.48 by transporting them. 00:01:20.51\00:01:21.84 We have the only ambulance for air travel in all of Nicaragua 00:01:21.88\00:01:25.81 that can carry oxygen and a stretcher. 00:01:25.85\00:01:27.98 And we are the only airplane in all of Nicaragua, 00:01:28.02\00:01:30.62 that is able to do this. 00:01:30.65\00:01:32.99 And we are the only airplane, that is based on the whole 00:01:33.02\00:01:37.46 Atlantic coast. 00:01:37.49\00:01:38.96 To be able to offer them help from a remote runway and get 00:01:38.99\00:01:42.40 them to a place where they can have better medical care 00:01:42.43\00:01:45.07 is a big blessing that they have and it saves a lot of lives. 00:01:45.10\00:01:49.67 Narrator: Clint stays very busy flying med-evac flights. 00:02:34.05\00:02:36.92 Often he will fly 5 or more patients a week. 00:02:37.92\00:02:41.29 In spite the demanding flight schedule, the Hanley's are not 00:02:41.32\00:02:46.03 satisfied with offering only aviation service. 00:02:46.06\00:02:50.20 Their ministry in Tranquera includes more than the work 00:02:50.23\00:02:55.20 they do with aviation. 00:02:55.24\00:02:56.87 The family finds new ways to help the local Miskito people. 00:02:57.51\00:03:01.11 Aviation opens the doors of opportunity to minister 00:03:01.81\00:03:05.55 to the people of this region. 00:03:05.58\00:03:07.42 Though years of service, the Miskito people have come to 00:03:08.42\00:03:11.69 accept the Hanley family as one of their own. 00:03:11.72\00:03:15.99 They see the love of Christ displayed in the service 00:03:16.29\00:03:19.49 the Hanley's provide. 00:03:19.53\00:03:21.90 Everyone on this Adventist World Aviation mission base dedicated 00:03:21.93\00:03:26.30 100% of their time to ministry. 00:03:26.33\00:03:29.10 Each day's work differs significantly from the next, 00:03:30.01\00:03:33.64 but no matter the activity, it is guaranteed to be focused 00:03:34.38\00:03:39.61 on ministering to the local people. 00:03:39.65\00:03:43.12 Jud: You know the airplane flying, and you know 00:03:43.92\00:03:45.82 the med-evacs is the most dramatic part of the work, 00:03:45.85\00:03:48.52 that you do here and are involved with, but that doesn't 00:03:48.56\00:03:51.19 happen all day and constantly and so I'm sure that there are 00:03:51.23\00:03:54.70 other things, that you look for, that are needs 00:03:54.73\00:03:58.00 in the communities that you can help. 00:03:58.03\00:04:01.00 Clint: Flying is probably the most fun thing to do. 00:04:01.20\00:04:03.84 It is the most exciting and that's one of the things that 00:04:03.87\00:04:06.57 most people focus on the most. 00:04:06.61\00:04:08.01 But that happens a few times a week and it's not - it doesn't 00:04:08.04\00:04:11.48 cover all of your life. 00:04:11.51\00:04:12.91 There's a lot of mundane, regular work that needs done. 00:04:12.95\00:04:15.28 Maintaining the airplane, building the hangar. 00:04:15.32\00:04:18.32 Narrator: The goal of each Adventist World Aviation 00:04:18.45\00:04:20.86 project is to provide 00:04:20.89\00:04:22.86 logistical and infrastructural support to the area they serve. 00:04:22.89\00:04:27.46 Primarily this is accomplished by the use of aircraft, 00:04:28.26\00:04:32.10 however, there are instances where this includes 00:04:32.13\00:04:35.74 land transportation as well. 00:04:35.77\00:04:38.07 Not far from the aviation base is another Adventist mission 00:04:38.87\00:04:43.81 whose primary work focuses on operating a medical clinic. 00:04:43.85\00:04:47.98 Clint works in close cooperation with this mission and assists 00:04:48.02\00:04:53.49 them whenever he can help. 00:04:53.52\00:04:56.02 Today Clint receives a call over the radio from the other mission 00:04:56.06\00:05:00.66 Hanna: Hey Clint this is Hanna, right now my poorly is 00:05:00.70\00:05:03.83 not really working and I'm wondering if you can come by 00:05:03.87\00:05:06.50 and help me out with it? 00:05:06.53\00:05:07.87 Narrator: Located in Francia, The other mission project is 00:05:07.90\00:05:12.01 over just one hour's drive away. 00:05:12.04\00:05:14.74 The roads in this part of Nicaragua are very rugged 00:05:15.34\00:05:18.65 and often not passable. 00:05:18.68\00:05:21.25 Thankfully today the roads are dry enough for Clint and his son 00:05:21.45\00:05:25.25 Brendell to make the journey to Francia to help 00:05:25.29\00:05:29.62 the other mission with their transportation issues. 00:05:29.66\00:05:32.73 Clint: We are on our way. We are almost to the Romillia Switch 00:05:32.83\00:05:34.63 We got delayed a little. Sorry. 00:05:34.66\00:05:37.13 Hanna: No problem at all. I'm here waiting. 00:05:38.43\00:05:40.54 Clint: Ok talk to you later. 00:05:41.04\00:05:42.44 Narrator: Years ago Clint helped this mission by installing 00:05:42.47\00:05:45.54 a radio communication system and a solar electric system 00:05:45.57\00:05:50.38 to make them more efficient. 00:05:50.41\00:05:52.11 These systems significantly enhanced their work in Francia. 00:05:52.91\00:05:57.79 It also gave them a way to communicate with Clint, 00:05:58.39\00:06:01.86 should they need to call for a medevac from their remote clinic 00:06:01.89\00:06:06.66 Today, Hanna, a student missionary has called Clint for 00:06:06.96\00:06:11.43 help in repairing her only mode of transportation, a 4-wheeler. 00:06:11.47\00:06:18.07 Hanna: Hi my name is Hanna Garva and I'm currently a student 00:06:18.11\00:06:21.64 missionary here in Francia Sirpi. 00:06:21.68\00:06:24.61 This is our TRAM headquarters. 00:06:24.65\00:06:28.85 Tasba Raya Adventist Ministries and I'm working in the clinic 00:06:28.88\00:06:33.22 with Dr Caldara and at our school as well. 00:06:33.25\00:06:35.82 Narrator: Hanna is a student missionary 00:06:36.83\00:06:38.46 working in the local clinic. 00:06:38.49\00:06:39.89 She works alongside a doctor and ministers to the local people. 00:06:40.20\00:06:44.83 The Clinic is not located in the mission compound and this 00:06:45.83\00:06:49.60 4- wheeler is her only mode of transportation 00:06:49.64\00:06:52.37 to and from the clinic. 00:06:52.41\00:06:53.81 Without this vehicle, she is not able to continue her work. 00:06:53.84\00:06:57.98 It's extremely important, especially right now. 00:06:58.01\00:07:01.02 The doctor is actually in Managua and I'm the only, 00:07:01.05\00:07:04.59 the only type of health person here. 00:07:04.62\00:07:07.86 I'm not even a nurse, so just the other day we had a burn 00:07:07.89\00:07:11.69 victim and our 4-wheeler wasn't working and thankfully, 00:07:11.73\00:07:17.57 thank God that Clint was able to come transport him to Waspam 00:07:17.60\00:07:22.87 because his burns were too severe for us, or for me to do 00:07:22.90\00:07:26.68 anything Narrator: Clint assists this Adventist mission in many 00:07:27.64\00:07:31.48 ways. He keeps close communication with the clinic 00:07:31.78\00:07:36.12 and transport all critical patients to the hospital. 00:07:36.15\00:07:38.32 Since this mission compound is so remote, all severely injured 00:07:39.02\00:07:43.46 or ill patients must be taken to the hospital which is hours away 00:07:43.49\00:07:48.76 There is no ambulance system in this part of the world and Clint 00:07:48.80\00:07:52.73 must transport all patients. 00:07:52.77\00:07:55.37 Hanna: The closest hospital is about two hours away. 00:07:55.67\00:08:00.78 But, if you want a better facility that's another, 00:08:00.81\00:08:05.45 that's about five - five or six hours depending on how bad 00:08:05.48\00:08:10.25 the roads are. 00:08:10.29\00:08:11.69 If it's really raining, If here in rainy season it's even worse. 00:08:12.09\00:08:16.36 The roads can get really bad and sometimes you can't even 00:08:16.76\00:08:20.66 cross them. 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.03 Maybe it will take the whole day so if you have an emergency 00:08:22.06\00:08:25.37 situation and you need to transport them, 00:08:25.40\00:08:28.20 it can get really dangerous. 00:08:28.24\00:08:31.27 We try and keep in contact with them because they really help us 00:08:31.77\00:08:35.44 with transportation, with the airplane and it's just 00:08:35.48\00:08:40.62 nice to know another American family around here. 00:08:40.65\00:08:43.82 Narrator: So Clint works on repairing this vehicle for Hanna 00:08:44.62\00:08:47.36 In order for her to continue her work at the clinic, 00:08:47.92\00:08:50.66 she must be able to reach it safely. 00:08:50.69\00:08:53.76 Without the 4-wheeler, it would not be safe 00:08:54.76\00:08:57.57 for her to walk alone. 00:08:57.60\00:08:59.43 Hanna: So there are no transportation options 00:09:00.14\00:09:02.57 in the village. 00:09:02.60\00:09:03.94 You can walk. A lot of the young men have bicycles. 00:09:04.67\00:09:07.61 There is a big truck that comes in from Port every other day, 00:09:09.11\00:09:15.48 but it holds a lot of cargo on top and it's really dangerous 00:09:15.52\00:09:18.69 to ride, so we don't ride on it. 00:09:18.72\00:09:21.22 Narrator: Clint diagnoses the problem with the 4-wheeler, 00:09:23.09\00:09:25.73 that the starter is the problem. 00:09:25.76\00:09:28.56 For him it will be an easy repair. 00:09:28.60\00:09:30.50 Currently, Hanna is the only medical provider at this mission 00:09:31.00\00:09:34.30 The doctor had to do go the capital for business so it vital 00:09:34.80\00:09:38.47 to get this vehicle running, so she can continue her work. 00:09:38.51\00:09:42.41 Clint also enlists his son to help him fix the 4-wheeler. 00:09:42.44\00:09:46.58 Although Brendell is young, he also does his share 00:09:46.61\00:09:49.85 of mission work. 00:09:49.88\00:09:51.45 Today, he can help his dad fix this motor vehicle 00:09:51.49\00:09:55.12 for the neighboring mission. 00:09:55.16\00:09:56.79 Soon the repair is made and they crank up the 4-wheeler. 00:09:56.83\00:10:00.83 The starter issue is resolved, however it seems the battery 00:10:01.13\00:10:05.63 is not holding the charge very well. 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.74 Clint: You should probably charge the battery 00:10:08.24\00:10:09.84 up inside in your system. 00:10:09.87\00:10:11.81 It wouldn't be bad to take it off and we could put it 00:10:13.81\00:10:16.18 in there to charge now. 00:10:16.21\00:10:18.01 Because he said it takes about a minute of cranking to be able to 00:10:18.05\00:10:21.72 get it to start the first time. 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.45 When you first start it. So that's going to take 00:10:23.49\00:10:24.82 quite a bit of cranking. 00:10:24.85\00:10:26.19 But now that it's been running, at least today, 00:10:26.35\00:10:28.29 it'll start a little easier. 00:10:28.32\00:10:31.09 Let's see if it starts right up. 00:10:31.13\00:10:32.79 Narrator: Since he is the one who installed it, Clint is very 00:10:39.43\00:10:42.50 familiar with the solar charging system at the mission. 00:10:42.54\00:10:46.11 He takes the battery from the vehicle and shows Hanna 00:10:46.81\00:10:49.41 how to set it up to charge. 00:10:49.44\00:10:51.55 The solar panels captures the energy from the 00:10:52.25\00:10:55.58 intense Nicaraguan sun. 00:10:55.62\00:10:57.72 The power is converted and stored in car batteries, 00:10:58.52\00:11:01.79 that the mission uses to power all its electronics. 00:11:01.82\00:11:05.19 This solar system keeps the mission up and running. 00:11:05.79\00:11:08.80 Clint: Now the battery is hooked into your power system. 00:11:08.83\00:11:12.13 Narrator: Clint is happy to help other ministries accomplish 00:11:12.17\00:11:14.74 their work. 00:11:14.77\00:11:16.10 This work falls perfectly in line with Adventist World 00:11:16.14\00:11:19.61 Aviation's mission of establishing infrastructural 00:11:19.64\00:11:23.98 and logistical support in remote locations around the world. 00:11:24.01\00:11:29.28 Narrator: Now that his work at the Adventist mission 00:11:47.10\00:11:49.10 is complete, Clint starts his journey back to his own mission 00:11:49.14\00:11:52.97 base, where more mission work awaits him. 00:11:53.01\00:11:56.24 Midway on his journey home, as he drives through the pine 00:11:56.95\00:12:00.68 savannah, he sees a motorcyclists stranded 00:12:00.72\00:12:04.25 on the side of the road. 00:12:04.29\00:12:05.72 It seems that his mechanic duties are not yet finished 00:12:06.22\00:12:09.86 for today. 00:12:09.89\00:12:11.23 So Clint pulls over to see if he can help this stranded motorist. 00:12:11.53\00:12:15.90 Almost everyone in this region knows Clint 00:12:16.70\00:12:19.73 and the AWA mission base. 00:12:19.77\00:12:22.30 He cannot pass by someone in need. 00:12:22.70\00:12:25.64 At first glance it's apparent the motorist has a flat tire. 00:12:25.94\00:12:30.08 Clint retrieves his pump and tools in effort to fix the leak. 00:12:30.11\00:12:35.78 However, despite their efforts to inflate the tire, 00:12:35.82\00:12:39.85 it continues to remain flat. 00:12:39.89\00:12:43.49 There must be a large gash in the tire he thinks. 00:12:43.99\00:12:47.43 Out here in the remote jungle, there're no mechanic shops, 00:12:48.23\00:12:51.97 or tire stores to quickly remedy the situation. 00:12:52.00\00:12:55.77 A flat tire would leave this man stranded with no option, but to 00:12:56.27\00:12:59.67 push his bike for days, until he reached a larger town. 00:12:59.71\00:13:03.88 Clint's base is only an hour's drive away. 00:13:05.08\00:13:08.55 He resolves to load the bike into the truck and fix the 00:13:09.05\00:13:12.72 motorcycle at the mission base. 00:13:12.75\00:13:15.19 The bike just barely fits into the back on the mission truck. 00:13:16.19\00:13:19.59 Thankfully, the men can angle the bike just right 00:13:20.93\00:13:24.13 to get the tailgate closed. 00:13:24.17\00:13:26.20 So with the bike loaded, they resume their trip back 00:13:27.54\00:13:30.67 to the AWA mission base. 00:13:30.71\00:13:32.97 Clint has the supplies they need to fix the bike in his garage. 00:13:33.81\00:13:38.05 The men reach the mission base and quickly begin fixing 00:13:39.45\00:13:42.42 the tire on the stranded motorist's bike. 00:13:42.45\00:13:45.49 Again Brendell is by his dad's side offering to help 00:13:46.19\00:13:50.03 anyway he can. 00:13:50.06\00:13:51.46 They pump up the tire to see if they can locate 00:13:52.06\00:13:54.96 where the air is escaping. 00:13:55.00\00:13:56.46 After a few spins, they find a puncture mark on the tire. 00:13:57.17\00:14:01.97 The roads in this area are in terrible condition, 00:14:02.37\00:14:05.57 so a punctured tire is not an uncommon occurrence. 00:14:05.61\00:14:09.58 In Tranquera, there is no way to buy a new tire 00:14:09.98\00:14:13.21 to replace this one. 00:14:13.25\00:14:14.72 They must patch the hole. 00:14:14.75\00:14:16.85 Clint keeps a tire patch kit in his garage. 00:14:17.55\00:14:20.46 He begins his work repairing this man's tire, 00:14:20.96\00:14:23.86 which is a labor of love for Clint. 00:14:23.89\00:14:26.43 He does not know this man, nor did he have to stop 00:14:26.93\00:14:30.87 and help him. 00:14:30.90\00:14:32.23 Clint expects nothing from him in return. 00:14:32.27\00:14:35.20 Clint and his family always seek to find every opportunity 00:14:35.24\00:14:39.77 they can to help the Miskito people. 00:14:39.81\00:14:43.21 They want the people to see the love of Christ 00:14:43.71\00:14:46.45 shining through them. 00:14:46.48\00:14:47.98 Clint knows that by devoting a few hours to help this man 00:14:48.48\00:14:52.05 repair his tire he is ultimately leaving a meaningful impact 00:14:52.09\00:14:56.66 on this man's life. 00:14:56.69\00:14:58.46 As they work together, Clint talks with him and builds 00:14:59.66\00:15:02.43 a relationship with a new friend. 00:15:02.46\00:15:05.73 While Clint works in the garage, Marilyn spends her day 00:15:20.12\00:15:23.42 helping others. 00:15:23.45\00:15:25.12 This mission base has an open-door policy 00:15:25.52\00:15:28.39 to assist whoever comes seeking help. 00:15:28.42\00:15:31.49 Marilyn is a registered nurse and has a constant stream 00:15:32.19\00:15:35.63 of patients coming to the clinic they've built on the base. 00:15:35.66\00:15:40.67 These patients will walk four or five hours to reach 00:15:41.37\00:15:44.74 the Adventist World Aviation mission base. 00:15:44.77\00:15:47.94 Marilyn examines each patient, gives them supplemental 00:15:49.01\00:15:52.45 medications from the pharmacy. 00:15:52.48\00:15:55.62 Often the patients will bring produce from their plantations 00:15:56.35\00:16:00.32 in appreciation. 00:16:00.36\00:16:02.52 They are so thankful to have Marilyn treat them. 00:16:02.82\00:16:05.86 Marilyn doesn't just treat her patients ailments. 00:16:05.89\00:16:09.80 She also educates each patient she sees. 00:16:09.83\00:16:13.97 She gives each person basic information about nutrition, 00:16:14.00\00:16:17.61 drinking clean water and healthful living. 00:16:17.64\00:16:23.04 Sadly, Marilyn has noticed a trend in many of the patients 00:16:24.15\00:16:27.48 she sees. 00:16:27.52\00:16:28.95 A vast majority of the women come in with respiratory issues. 00:16:28.98\00:16:33.39 This stems from Miskito women cooking in their small 00:16:33.69\00:16:37.09 unventilated huts with charcoal. 00:16:37.13\00:16:40.10 Each day, the native women spend hours cooking in a confined 00:16:40.60\00:16:45.30 space with smoke pouring in their faces. 00:16:45.33\00:16:48.97 Day after day, the women breathe in this harmful smoke, 00:16:49.37\00:16:52.94 which makes them sick. 00:16:52.97\00:16:54.98 This problem is not isolated to just the women of the village. 00:16:55.01\00:16:58.51 The Miskito people are very poor and look for any opportunity 00:16:59.01\00:17:02.82 to make money. 00:17:02.85\00:17:04.65 And one of the ways some villagers have found to make 00:17:04.69\00:17:07.42 their livelihood is to burn wood and make carbon charcoal. 00:17:07.46\00:17:14.33 These people don't understand just how harmful this line 00:17:15.56\00:17:19.13 of work is on their bodies. 00:17:19.17\00:17:21.34 Men and women and even children will spend days making charcoal 00:17:21.37\00:17:25.01 to sell. 00:17:25.04\00:17:26.41 During this time, they inhale the smoke, thus damaging 00:17:26.44\00:17:30.71 their bodies. 00:17:30.75\00:17:32.55 To make the charcoal, they must continually harvest 00:17:33.55\00:17:36.02 trees from the forests. 00:17:36.05\00:17:37.72 They strip acres of land of pine trees and put them 00:17:38.32\00:17:41.79 in a burn pile. 00:17:41.82\00:17:43.56 They control the burn rate by piling dirt on top of the logs 00:17:44.16\00:17:48.36 so the wood smolders for days. 00:17:48.40\00:17:51.73 Then they dig out portions of the pile and pour water 00:17:51.77\00:17:56.34 on the carbon. 00:17:56.37\00:17:58.17 Afterwards they gather the charcoal into bags 00:17:58.21\00:18:01.34 and sell them to others. 00:18:01.38\00:18:03.38 This line of work has many health consequences. 00:18:03.41\00:18:07.42 Marilyn: The people, who are doing carbon right now, maybe 00:18:08.42\00:18:11.59 three, four, five years they're all going to be getting 00:18:11.62\00:18:14.62 really serious lung ailments from the dust, from the carbon. 00:18:14.66\00:18:18.43 And the people in the village, who are making carbon, 00:18:18.46\00:18:23.20 making charcoal, are maybe in three, four, five years 00:18:23.23\00:18:27.87 they're going to be getting sick 00:18:27.90\00:18:29.34 They have children there. They have pregnant women there 00:18:29.37\00:18:31.44 and everyone is going to start getting lung ailments. 00:18:31.47\00:18:34.31 Because of the amount of time they're spending breathing 00:18:34.34\00:18:37.05 the carbon dust from the charcoal camps. 00:18:37.08\00:18:40.15 Narrator: Another consequence of this industry is the erosion 00:18:40.65\00:18:43.12 of land in the village. 00:18:43.15\00:18:44.95 When people cut down whole forests at once, the ground is 00:18:44.99\00:18:49.52 easily washed away by the strong Nicaraguan rain storms. 00:18:49.56\00:18:53.76 The root system of the trees is no longer able to keep 00:18:53.80\00:18:57.73 the ground in place. 00:18:57.77\00:18:59.33 The land is especially ruined. 00:19:00.14\00:19:02.47 Unfortunately this is an issue, that directly impacts 00:19:02.50\00:19:06.24 the mission base here. 00:19:06.27\00:19:07.94 Erosion is threatening the runway that Adventist World 00:19:07.98\00:19:11.65 Aviation uses for their aviation service. 00:19:11.68\00:19:15.08 The Hanley's do what they can to educate the people on how 00:19:15.68\00:19:19.35 harmful this industry is for themselves, and their village. 00:19:19.39\00:19:24.03 Marilyn visits homes and talks to the ladies about alternative 00:19:24.06\00:19:27.90 ways for cooking, that wouldn't be so detrimental 00:19:27.93\00:19:31.37 to their community. 00:19:31.40\00:19:33.07 As she does this, she develops relationships with them and 00:19:33.10\00:19:37.24 reminds them just how much she cares for their wellbeing. 00:19:37.27\00:19:43.41 Every member of the Hanley family helps the Miskito people 00:19:46.11\00:19:49.12 with their ministry. 00:19:49.15\00:19:50.62 The mission is a constant buzz of activity as people walk 00:19:50.65\00:19:54.89 hours for help. 00:19:54.92\00:19:56.29 Even the young Hanley children take a break from their 00:19:56.32\00:19:59.33 home schooling to help. 00:19:59.36\00:20:01.16 This afternoon 2 young boys ride on to the base carrying a bag. 00:20:01.20\00:20:06.87 Marilyn: He's brought some phones, that we're going to 00:20:08.24\00:20:11.81 charge on our solar system. 00:20:11.84\00:20:13.54 Because they don't have standard power in their village. 00:20:14.24\00:20:16.78 Narrator: Brendell offers to be in charge of the cell phones. 00:20:18.05\00:20:21.25 In this part of the world, there's no electricity running 00:20:21.75\00:20:25.19 to the small villages. 00:20:25.22\00:20:26.79 To keep their phones active they ask the mission to charge them. 00:20:26.82\00:20:31.39 Even though they are isolated from the rest of the world, 00:20:32.09\00:20:35.40 it's important for these people to have a cell phone 00:20:35.43\00:20:38.23 in the village. 00:20:38.27\00:20:39.83 Should they need to call for help, or a med-evac, 00:20:39.87\00:20:42.94 it's important to have a way to communicate. 00:20:42.97\00:20:45.94 It's a bright sunny day, so these phones should charge 00:20:46.98\00:20:50.78 pretty quickly. 00:20:50.81\00:20:52.31 Brenedell keeps an eye on each one and makes sure 00:20:52.35\00:20:55.75 they are fully charged before they are returned. 00:20:55.78\00:20:59.05 For the rest of the day, the mission remains a constant 00:20:59.55\00:21:02.52 buzz of activity. 00:21:02.56\00:21:04.03 Marilyn sees another patient, while more men come 00:21:04.06\00:21:07.16 to the Clinic with repairs. 00:21:07.20\00:21:09.36 The missionary children take the opportunity to play 00:21:09.40\00:21:12.03 with other children, while they wait for their parents. 00:21:12.07\00:21:15.30 Narrator: Another way the AWA air base in Nicaragua helps 00:21:16.07\00:21:19.01 spread the gospel, is by supplying transportation 00:21:19.04\00:21:22.34 for local pastors to visit their congregations, 00:21:22.38\00:21:26.01 that are spread out throughout the jungle. 00:21:26.05\00:21:28.72 It is the goal of each Adventist World Aviation airbase 00:21:29.42\00:21:33.12 to establish logistical and transportation support 00:21:33.15\00:21:36.86 in each of the areas they work. 00:21:36.89\00:21:39.19 In Nicaragua, pastors are extremely limited in number, 00:21:39.69\00:21:42.96 yet they cover large areas. 00:21:43.00\00:21:45.27 Adventist World Aviation helps transport pastors by plane 00:21:45.77\00:21:50.27 to help them reach their congregations, which are 00:21:50.31\00:21:53.81 spread out through the jungle. 00:21:53.84\00:21:55.74 Hello, my name is Pastor Manyano Arera. 00:21:56.54\00:21:59.81 For now, I live in Managua the university of, 00:22:01.08\00:22:05.12 Adventist University in Managua. 00:22:05.15\00:22:07.29 Clint don't work only when he was flying. 00:22:07.79\00:22:11.49 Sometime the people say "oh how many hours you have to flying?" 00:22:12.09\00:22:16.36 No. They work very hard even when they work on land 00:22:16.40\00:22:21.40 with the people, with all the community. 00:22:21.90\00:22:25.74 Narrator: The Hanley's have also found another effective way 00:22:26.24\00:22:29.38 to help supply transportation for their local pastor. 00:22:29.41\00:22:33.98 Pastor Samuel is a friend of Clint and Marilyn 00:22:34.02\00:22:37.62 for many years now. 00:22:37.65\00:22:39.45 He is a lay pastor assigned to minister to this area. 00:22:39.49\00:22:42.92 He uses a bicycle to travel between villages. 00:22:43.22\00:22:46.36 Often he rides for 4-5 hours one way just to reach a congregation 00:22:46.80\00:22:51.80 Clint: ok, this is Mr. Samuel. He is our lay pastor, 00:22:52.00\00:22:55.30 who comes from Tasba Pine. 00:22:55.34\00:22:57.44 And let me ask how long it takes him to get here. 00:22:57.47\00:23:01.24 This time, I rode on the bike two hours to get here. 00:23:03.88\00:23:06.08 And that's normal. Two hours is a normal time that it takes him 00:23:06.11\00:23:12.29 to get here on his bike. 00:23:12.32\00:23:14.22 So he comes here to go to church 00:23:15.06\00:23:17.03 And he is, teaches, helps teach Sabbath School and helps 00:23:17.06\00:23:22.46 preach at our little church. 00:23:22.50\00:23:24.73 And that's his bicycle that he takes to church, and I have 00:23:24.77\00:23:29.27 some parts for him, that I just flew in the airplane. 00:23:29.30\00:23:32.47 Narrator: Clint wants to make sure, that the gospel reaches 00:23:35.98\00:23:38.05 as many villages among the Miskito people as possible. 00:23:38.08\00:23:41.22 He made an arrangement with Pastor Samuel to make sure 00:23:42.02\00:23:45.62 he always has transportation. 00:23:45.65\00:23:47.82 Bicycles and parts are not available in this village. 00:23:48.32\00:23:52.96 Clint: His bicycle he rides that at least you know about 4 hours. 00:23:56.67\00:24:01.17 But he also goes other places on his bicycle to other churches 00:24:01.20\00:24:04.57 and stuff, so we keep him supplied with bicycle parts 00:24:04.61\00:24:08.78 for his bicycle all the time as part of his help to us. 00:24:08.81\00:24:12.61 Narrator: Clint flies in the bike parts 00:24:13.21\00:24:15.12 that the pastor needs from Port. 00:24:15.15\00:24:17.19 The poor roads and conditions takes an enormous toll 00:24:17.89\00:24:21.06 on the pastor's bicycle. 00:24:21.09\00:24:23.02 Without the logistical support from this mission, the Pastor's 00:24:23.06\00:24:26.96 bike would breakdown within a short time and there would be no 00:24:27.00\00:24:30.13 way to reach his congregations. 00:24:30.17\00:24:32.80 Not only does the mission fly in the parts he needs, but these 00:24:32.83\00:24:36.04 parts are given as a gift to the pastor to enhance his ministry. 00:24:36.07\00:24:41.41 Joy gleams from the pastor's face as he receives new rims 00:24:41.74\00:24:46.85 and a tire pump. 00:24:46.88\00:24:48.92 The bike items will keep his ministry moving 00:24:48.95\00:24:52.15 into new territories. 00:24:52.19\00:24:54.22 Clint: Because we requested that he does that, and we give him a 00:24:54.26\00:24:56.56 a little stipend every month to come here and with his help 00:24:56.59\00:24:59.53 for his bike too. 00:24:59.56\00:25:00.90 So between both of those that's his motivation for riding 00:25:00.93\00:25:04.43 that far. 00:25:04.47\00:25:05.80 And we don't have other Seventh Day Adventist's, who are able to 00:25:05.83\00:25:09.24 teach and preach at our church that are any closer than that. 00:25:09.27\00:25:12.94 So if we help him out a little bit with his bike and give him 00:25:13.48\00:25:17.98 a little bit every month, he's happy to come help us. 00:25:18.01\00:25:19.91 What we're giving him a month is fifteen dollars. 00:25:19.95\00:25:22.85 So it's not enough to really do much to help him, 00:25:22.88\00:25:25.62 but it's a little bit. 00:25:25.65\00:25:26.99 So he mostly does it because he want to help the church. 00:25:27.02\00:25:29.82 He says he's happy that he has God's work to do. 00:25:33.03\00:25:35.66 And it's nice to be able to help 00:25:35.70\00:25:37.90 He says he's happy to be able to come here and share God's word 00:25:46.07\00:25:49.38 with the people in this area too 00:25:49.41\00:25:50.95 That's the reason that he's happy and wants to thank us. 00:25:55.35\00:25:57.85 Narrator: The Pastor and Clint spend the rest of the day 00:25:59.19\00:26:01.92 together visiting and discussing future plans. 00:26:01.96\00:26:04.66 Developing relationships here among the local people is vital 00:26:04.99\00:26:09.36 to the success of this mission. 00:26:09.40\00:26:11.43 Cultivating this friendship deepens the trust 00:26:11.87\00:26:14.50 of the Miskito people. 00:26:14.54\00:26:16.54 As the day ends, the pastor again thanks Clint 00:26:17.47\00:26:20.34 for helping his ministry. 00:26:20.38\00:26:22.34 He gathers his new bike materials and happily begins 00:26:22.38\00:26:25.91 the 2 hour bike ride to his home 00:26:25.95\00:26:28.38 Ministry isn't an easy task here in the rural jungles 00:26:28.42\00:26:32.12 of Nicaragua, but simple joys like a new bike rim encourages 00:26:32.15\00:26:37.99 Pastor Samuel to keep the faith and continue 00:26:38.03\00:26:42.30 with the great commission. 00:26:42.33\00:26:44.20 Having new bike parts will allow him to reach many more people 00:26:44.23\00:26:48.57 for the kingdom of God. Hallelujah. 00:26:48.60\00:26:52.74 No matter the activity, each member of the family is equally 00:26:54.14\00:26:58.18 showing the love of Christ to those around them. 00:26:58.21\00:27:01.18 Although there was no med-evac flights today, this mission 00:27:01.22\00:27:05.09 stayed busy ministering to the Miskito people. 00:27:05.12\00:27:08.26 Sometimes that love is shown by simple actions of kindness. 00:27:08.69\00:27:12.43 sometimes that love is shown in preforming a medical exam. 00:27:13.56\00:27:17.13 Sometimes it's displayed by playing tag. 00:27:18.07\00:27:20.70 But no matter the activity, the Hanley's dedicate all 00:27:21.47\00:27:25.74 they do to this ministry. 00:27:25.77\00:27:28.58 They feel blessed to be able to do this work for the Lord! 00:27:29.08\00:27:32.45 They know, that they do not do this work alone. 00:27:32.98\00:27:39.42 Clint: In this line of work, when I walk down the street 00:27:41.06\00:27:44.96 in our local little village, people come to me and they say 00:27:44.99\00:27:48.80 "thank you for saving my life, thank you for helping me." 00:27:48.83\00:27:51.27 and we appreciate the fact, that you know they will come up and 00:27:51.30\00:27:55.17 say "you've helped my brother, you flew my brother to town, 00:27:55.20\00:27:57.61 or my sister or me and we want to thank you for that." 00:27:57.64\00:28:00.98 And there is very few lines of work, that you can walk down 00:28:01.28\00:28:04.35 the street and you can look at the people in your local little 00:28:04.38\00:28:07.28 town and know that several of them that you see right then 00:28:07.32\00:28:10.15 are alive because of the work you did. 00:28:10.19\00:28:12.05 So it is very fulfilling. 00:28:12.09\00:28:13.52 But at the same time, the credit all goes to the tools 00:28:13.56\00:28:15.89 that the Lord has given me. 00:28:15.92\00:28:17.46 I don't have any extra expertise or anything that anybody else 00:28:17.49\00:28:21.20 doesn't have. 00:28:21.23\00:28:22.56 All I do is use the tools, that the Lord has given me. 00:28:22.60\00:28:24.50 And I am thankful that He has blessed me with those and that 00:28:24.83\00:28:26.90 I am able to pass on as a channel to help the local people 00:28:26.94\00:28:31.57 What He has given me and what you guys send from the States 00:28:31.61\00:28:33.61 to be able to help them. 00:28:33.64\00:28:34.98 And I am that one who get the benefit of seeing the smiles 00:28:35.01\00:28:36.75 on their faces and hears the thank you from them. 00:28:36.78\00:28:38.78 Each person, who gives to be able to help other people, 00:28:38.81\00:28:42.95 that will someday be a star in their crown. 00:28:42.98\00:28:47.49 They will be able to see what that help did. 00:28:47.52\00:28:49.19 Whether it bought a Bible, or whether it purchased gasoline 00:28:49.22\00:28:52.43 to take an emergency transport that enabled someone to live. 00:28:52.46\00:28:55.03 Someday you will know the complete story behind 00:28:55.06\00:28:56.97 what you gave to help out. 00:28:57.00\00:28:58.40
