Narrator: Scattered across the globe, Adventist World Aviation 00:00:01.43\00:00:04.17 has mission outposts situated in extremely remote areas 00:00:04.20\00:00:09.04 that were established to help minister 00:00:09.07\00:00:10.71 to local indigenous people. 00:00:10.74\00:00:12.57 Most of these locations are so difficult to reach that aviation 00:00:12.61\00:00:16.85 is the primary means to reach them. 00:00:16.88\00:00:19.28 Using aircraft, Adventist World Aviation is able to deliver 00:00:20.08\00:00:23.85 the gospel message, as well as provide lifesaving med-evac 00:00:23.89\00:00:28.32 flights to thousands by using the tool of aviation. 00:00:28.36\00:00:32.69 Providing quick and reliable transportation to many parts 00:00:33.70\00:00:37.10 of the earth, that are almost impossible to reach 00:00:37.13\00:00:40.07 is the mission of AWA. 00:00:40.10\00:00:42.70 Adventist World Aviation missionaries use the means 00:00:42.80\00:00:46.61 of aviation to spread the love of Jesus all around the world. 00:00:46.64\00:00:50.81 Narrator: Adventist World Aviation has a mission outpost 00:01:35.42\00:01:37.83 situated in north eastern Nicaragua in a small village 00:01:37.86\00:01:41.63 named Tronquera. 00:01:41.66\00:01:43.16 Here, the Hanley missionary family works endlessly 00:01:43.20\00:01:45.90 to serve the Miskito people. 00:01:45.93\00:01:47.74 The Hanley's have lived in Nicaragua for over 10 years now 00:01:48.14\00:01:51.81 and have established a good relationship 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.31 with the people here. 00:01:54.34\00:01:55.71 Clint is a pilot and offers med-evac flights to all 00:01:56.61\00:02:00.35 the neighboring villages, that need to get patients 00:02:00.38\00:02:03.32 to a higher level of medical care. 00:02:03.35\00:02:05.35 There are no safe road systems from the thick jungles 00:02:05.39\00:02:10.43 to Puerto Cabezas, which is the closest hospital equipped 00:02:10.46\00:02:14.86 to handle critical injuries. 00:02:14.90\00:02:16.40 Jud: Here we are in this remote part of Nicaragua. 00:02:19.20\00:02:21.40 Can you describe where we are, and how you came to be here? 00:02:21.44\00:02:25.51 Clint: Well the northeast part of Nicaragua here is an area 00:02:26.51\00:02:31.41 that is completely different then the Pacific Coast. 00:02:31.45\00:02:34.12 You have the Atlantic and the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua. 00:02:34.15\00:02:36.55 And the Atlantic coast is on the Caribbean which most people 00:02:36.58\00:02:40.02 think of as a nice vacation spot but it's not that way here. 00:02:40.06\00:02:43.02 And it's an area of indigenous Indians, Miskito Indians. 00:02:43.06\00:02:47.23 The Miskito Indians were never concurred by the Spanish 00:02:47.26\00:02:50.47 and they don't have the infrastructure that's been 00:02:50.50\00:02:53.03 developed on the Pacific side of the country. 00:02:53.07\00:02:55.14 This area has a lot of needs that are very unique 00:02:55.17\00:02:57.61 to Nicaragua and it's separated from the rest of Nicaragua 00:02:57.64\00:03:00.51 geographically. 00:03:00.54\00:03:01.88 And it's separated by a line of mountains and the roads 00:03:01.91\00:03:06.01 that go crossed it are very bad. 00:03:06.05\00:03:07.88 Sometimes they are impassable. 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.25 So we rely on air transport for virtually everything we do. 00:03:09.28\00:03:12.55 We have the only ambulance for air travel in all of Nicaragua 00:03:12.59\00:03:18.26 that can carry oxygen and a stretcher. 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.13 And we're the only airplane in all of Nicaragua that is able 00:03:20.16\00:03:24.40 to do this and we are the only airplane that is based 00:03:24.43\00:03:29.04 on the whole Atlantic coast. 00:03:29.07\00:03:30.87 Narrator: Clint stays very busy flying med-evac flights. 00:03:31.87\00:03:34.51 Very often he will fly 5 or more patients a week. 00:03:35.01\00:03:38.35 But despite this demanding flight schedule, the Hanley's 00:03:38.38\00:03:42.45 are not satisfied with only offering aviation services. 00:03:42.48\00:03:45.82 Their ministry here at Tronquera runs so much deeper, 00:03:46.82\00:03:51.59 than the work they do with aviation. 00:03:51.63\00:03:53.63 The family keeps very busy finding new ways to help 00:03:54.36\00:03:57.50 the local Miskito people. 00:03:57.53\00:03:58.87 Jud: You know the airplane flying, and you know 00:03:59.37\00:04:01.67 the med-evacs is the most dramatic part of the work, 00:04:01.70\00:04:04.07 that you do here and are involved with, but that doesn't 00:04:04.11\00:04:07.01 happen all day and constantly and so I'm sure that there are 00:04:07.04\00:04:10.31 other things that you look for, that are needs 00:04:10.35\00:04:13.82 in the communities, that you can help. 00:04:13.85\00:04:16.82 Clint: Yah flying is probably the most fun thing to do. 00:04:16.85\00:04:19.69 It is the most exciting and that's one of the things that 00:04:19.72\00:04:23.29 most people focus on the most. 00:04:23.32\00:04:24.66 But that happens a few times a week and it's not- it doesn't 00:04:24.69\00:04:28.00 cover all of your life. 00:04:28.03\00:04:29.43 There's a lot of mundane, regular work that needs done. 00:04:29.46\00:04:32.00 Maintaining the airplane, building the hangar, 00:04:32.03\00:04:34.80 things like that working on your house. 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.87 But the community work that we also do, we built a house 00:04:36.91\00:04:40.21 for widows in the village, a cement house 00:04:40.24\00:04:42.31 for a couple of the poor people in the village. 00:04:42.34\00:04:44.71 Narrator: Just a few short miles away from the mission base 00:04:44.75\00:04:47.72 is a newly constructed concrete block home, that was 00:04:47.75\00:04:51.25 affectionately nicknamed the "widows' house". 00:04:51.29\00:04:54.96 In this part of Nicaragua the villagers are very poor. 00:04:55.56\00:04:59.53 Many of them don't have the means to build a simple 00:04:59.56\00:05:02.60 home for themselves. 00:05:02.63\00:05:04.13 Clint and his wife Marilyn, saw a great need in their community. 00:05:04.73\00:05:08.94 They contacted their donors, that faithfully support their 00:05:08.97\00:05:12.84 ministry and told them about the needs here in the village. 00:05:12.87\00:05:15.91 They were able to raise enough money to build this simple, 00:05:16.31\00:05:19.15 yet solid home and donate it to the community. 00:05:19.18\00:05:23.25 Client told the community that they were free to select 00:05:23.28\00:05:26.39 whomever the community felt was the most in need 00:05:26.42\00:05:29.89 and offer the home to them. 00:05:29.92\00:05:32.09 The community gratefully accepted the house 00:05:32.43\00:05:35.23 and gave it to an elderly widow and her family. 00:05:35.26\00:05:39.93 The Miskito people living in this region of Nicaragua, sadly 00:05:40.64\00:05:45.24 are very poor and left isolated from the rest of the country. 00:05:45.27\00:05:50.01 Clint: The Miskito people in general, are subsistence farmers 00:05:50.71\00:05:56.08 So there's not a big economic base for them here. 00:05:56.12\00:05:59.59 They don't have a lot of reason for businesses to come in. 00:05:59.62\00:06:03.99 They don't have a lot of resources that people need, 00:06:04.03\00:06:07.56 so that's part of the reason economically that they're, 00:06:07.60\00:06:11.47 they're kind of segregated. 00:06:11.50\00:06:13.13 They're off to the side in the country. 00:06:13.17\00:06:14.64 The roads could be improved. 00:06:14.67\00:06:16.81 You know that's not a hard thing to do. 00:06:16.84\00:06:19.07 But in order to improve the roads, it takes money. 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.11 And you need to have a reason to access the area. 00:06:21.14\00:06:24.08 And without economic incentive, businesses don't really care 00:06:24.11\00:06:28.88 to access this side of the country. 00:06:28.92\00:06:30.92 Because there's not enough resources here 00:06:30.95\00:06:33.36 to be able to do that. 00:06:33.39\00:06:34.72 The Miskito people aren't big business people and there's not 00:06:34.76\00:06:38.69 a lot of resources that they need in the soil or whatever 00:06:38.73\00:06:41.76 they need to access on this side of the country. 00:06:41.80\00:06:43.63 So economically, they have kind of left it. 00:06:43.67\00:06:46.53 The church also, it's hard to reach subsistence farmers, 00:06:46.57\00:06:50.07 you know out in the middle of the jungle. 00:06:50.11\00:06:52.64 You know, when you go out and have tiny villages dotted around 00:06:52.67\00:06:55.31 They're hard to access. 00:06:55.34\00:06:56.88 A lot of places you have to walk to be able to access them. 00:06:56.91\00:06:59.95 But even by truck, it's by four wheel drive. 00:06:59.98\00:07:02.42 And you've got to learn another language. 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.65 A lot of them don't know Spanish, you need to know 00:07:04.69\00:07:06.62 Miskito to be able to communicate effectively. 00:07:06.65\00:07:08.82 And so even by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a lot of them, 00:07:08.86\00:07:12.59 places are very hard to access and they've been kind of left 00:07:12.63\00:07:16.77 to the side, because they're out of the beaten track. 00:07:16.80\00:07:19.83 They're not on the way to or from anywhere. 00:07:19.87\00:07:21.54 And nobody ever passed through this area 00:07:21.57\00:07:23.97 going to somewhere. 00:07:24.01\00:07:25.34 It's the final destination, this is it. 00:07:25.37\00:07:26.84 Narrator: Clint and his family have resolved to do everything 00:07:28.04\00:07:30.45 they can to make sure the Miskito people 00:07:30.48\00:07:32.75 are not forgotten. 00:07:32.78\00:07:34.22 Even though they're isolated from the rest of the country, 00:07:35.02\00:07:37.79 having aviation support in times of emergency has saved 00:07:37.82\00:07:42.46 over 500 lives within the last 10 years. 00:07:42.49\00:07:47.96 But aviation is just one of the ways the Hanley family shows 00:07:48.66\00:07:52.87 the love of God to the Miskito people and insures them that 00:07:52.90\00:07:56.94 they have not been forgotten by the All Mighty Creator. 00:07:56.97\00:08:01.48 Opportunities for advancement are rare 00:08:03.01\00:08:05.08 in this part of the world. 00:08:05.11\00:08:06.45 Many who are born in this part of Nicaragua, do not have many 00:08:06.48\00:08:10.69 opportunities to better their lives. 00:08:10.72\00:08:12.99 Poverty runs rampant and villagers suffer from lack 00:08:13.19\00:08:17.39 of opportunities for growth. 00:08:17.43\00:08:19.33 The AWA missionaries struggle with how to make 00:08:19.53\00:08:23.37 a positive change in this regard. 00:08:23.40\00:08:26.23 One way Clint and Marilyn have sought to bring change to the 00:08:27.14\00:08:30.47 community is through education. 00:08:30.51\00:08:32.57 In Puerto Cabezas there is an Adventist elementary school. 00:08:33.01\00:08:37.61 Through donations from supporters in North America, 00:08:38.41\00:08:41.82 the Hanley's are able to give scholarships to young people, 00:08:41.85\00:08:45.45 who want to drastically change their lives. 00:08:45.49\00:08:48.42 Because the school is so far away from the mission base, 00:08:48.72\00:08:52.09 Clint flies the young students to town and then enrolls them 00:08:52.13\00:08:56.67 in the boarding school, where they can gain knowledge 00:08:56.70\00:08:59.10 they need to better their lives. 00:08:59.13\00:09:01.97 Clint: This is a Seventh-day Adventist school 00:09:02.30\00:09:04.51 in Puerto Cabezas. 00:09:04.54\00:09:05.87 This is the only Seventh-day Adventist secondary school 00:09:05.91\00:09:08.74 on the Atlantic Coast. 00:09:08.78\00:09:10.11 They have somewhere in the range of four to five hundred 00:09:10.15\00:09:13.42 kids here, which is the largest school in all of Nicaragua 00:09:13.45\00:09:17.52 for secondary school for Seventh-day Adventists. 00:09:17.55\00:09:19.45 And we help out some with this school with kids from the 00:09:19.49\00:09:23.86 communities, especially from our community of La Tronquera. 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.80 We send kids here to this school 00:09:26.83\00:09:29.16 and we help with some of their tuition. 00:09:29.20\00:09:30.80 And we usually help kids, who have good grades and who are 00:09:30.83\00:09:36.84 interested in going on and getting education. 00:09:36.87\00:09:39.87 We try to find those kids in the communities, who are 00:09:39.91\00:09:42.78 very interested in studying and then we send them here 00:09:42.81\00:09:45.75 and help them to further their education, 00:09:45.78\00:09:48.12 so they can go somewhere in their life. 00:09:48.15\00:09:49.88 Narrator: Adventist World Aviation seeks to help the poor 00:09:50.39\00:09:52.85 and less fortunate of the world in a vast variety of ways. 00:09:52.89\00:09:56.86 Sometimes the work is done through construction projects, 00:09:57.46\00:10:00.83 other times it is accomplished by aviation support, 00:10:00.86\00:10:04.27 but regardless of the project, the end goal is always the same: 00:10:04.30\00:10:09.94 to help others know the love of Jesus. 00:10:09.97\00:10:14.24 Narrator: Ten years ago, when the Hanley family first moved 00:10:28.29\00:10:30.73 to this area, there was no communication 00:10:30.76\00:10:34.50 infrastructure available. 00:10:34.53\00:10:36.36 This limited the missionary's work greatly, because there was 00:10:36.40\00:10:40.97 simply no way of knowing, when the people might need help. 00:10:41.00\00:10:44.54 They could not communicate with other villages or provide 00:10:45.34\00:10:48.18 help to outlying areas. 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.11 To solve this deficiency, Clint devised a plan. 00:10:50.15\00:10:53.98 Jud: Obviously if you go into remote areas, communication 00:10:54.88\00:10:57.05 is a huge factor. 00:10:57.09\00:10:59.05 Adventist World Aviation is, you know our policy is to create 00:11:00.76\00:11:04.86 transpiration and communication infrastructures 00:11:04.89\00:11:07.83 in remote areas. 00:11:07.86\00:11:09.20 And this is a prime example. 00:11:09.23\00:11:10.60 Can you explain a little bit about how your communication 00:11:10.63\00:11:14.74 has helped with other ministries other organizations, government, 00:11:14.77\00:11:20.41 health and those things. 00:11:20.44\00:11:21.98 And how you have been involved in that. 00:11:22.01\00:11:23.55 Clint: Yah, when we first moved here, there was no cell service 00:11:24.55\00:11:27.75 of any kind. And so, radios is what everything relied on. 00:11:27.78\00:11:31.12 And we started out with two meter radios, ham radios, 00:11:31.15\00:11:33.46 and amateur radios is, what we call them in the states. 00:11:33.49\00:11:36.52 That worked, we would put a, in a local village where we 00:11:38.36\00:11:42.23 were flying, we'd put a solar panel in and a battery. 00:11:42.26\00:11:44.43 And put an antenna up and then they can communicate with us 00:11:44.47\00:11:48.37 when there was an emergency. 00:11:48.40\00:11:49.74 And that worked quite well and they were able to communicate 00:11:49.77\00:11:53.54 with us and the hospital saw that and said 00:11:53.58\00:11:55.34 "wow this is really working good. 00:11:55.38\00:11:56.88 Could we put an antenna up at your house too and you could 00:11:56.91\00:11:59.35 have a radio from us?" 00:11:59.38\00:12:00.72 And they have their own communication network. 00:12:00.75\00:12:02.65 And so they gave me one of their radios. 00:12:02.68\00:12:05.25 There're a Motorola set up on crystal controlled setup and so 00:12:05.29\00:12:08.66 I put one of their antennas up on my tower 00:12:08.69\00:12:13.06 and have their system. 00:12:13.09\00:12:14.66 So they can communicate from Waspam 00:12:14.70\00:12:16.67 when there's emergencies. 00:12:16.70\00:12:18.03 So they communicate directly with us for that and then they 00:12:18.67\00:12:21.67 also have some of the minsa radios, it's government, 00:12:21.70\00:12:24.91 it's called minsa radios, it's government health program. 00:12:24.94\00:12:28.11 Their radios are also in some of the remote communities. 00:12:28.14\00:12:31.01 So they communicate directly with us from runways 00:12:31.05\00:12:33.68 that they have in the communities. 00:12:33.72\00:12:35.05 And the doctor in the community then can call directly 00:12:35.08\00:12:37.15 to us to schedule flights and tell us, you know 00:12:37.19\00:12:40.22 that there is a person here that's coming in. 00:12:40.26\00:12:41.92 Or that somebody is coming down the river to us right now, 00:12:41.96\00:12:43.89 and we need them to be transported out. 00:12:43.93\00:12:45.89 Narrator: Due to the remote nature of this part of Nicaragua 00:12:46.53\00:12:48.96 medical care is not available 00:12:49.00\00:12:51.20 for critically injured individuals. 00:12:51.23\00:12:53.54 If someone needs a higher level of medical care, 00:12:53.57\00:12:56.34 they must reach Puerto Cabezas. 00:12:56.37\00:12:58.67 Some of the villages do not even have road access 00:12:58.71\00:13:01.74 to make this journey. 00:13:01.78\00:13:03.24 For those that do, the badly injured individual must travel 00:13:03.28\00:13:07.18 over 5 hours on a terribly rough road or travel by boat 00:13:07.22\00:13:12.35 for 2 days on the slow flowing Rio Cocoa. 00:13:12.39\00:13:16.16 These means of transportation often guarantee death 00:13:17.16\00:13:20.40 to a critical patient when time is of the upmost importance. 00:13:20.43\00:13:25.33 Clint: They take a boat, because there is no roads. 00:13:25.37\00:13:27.90 And the boats go, sometimes once a day a boat goes. 00:13:27.94\00:13:31.24 Sometimes they'll skip a day or two. 00:13:31.27\00:13:33.41 But generally a boat goes once a day. 00:13:33.44\00:13:35.38 That boat costs about five to six days wages to take the boat, 00:13:35.41\00:13:41.22 and per person. 00:13:41.25\00:13:42.58 And it takes twelve hours to get to Waspam which is the nearest 00:13:42.62\00:13:47.12 hospital they can access. 00:13:47.16\00:13:49.19 And that's not the biggest hospital, that's just the 00:13:49.22\00:13:51.19 very nearest hospital. 00:13:51.23\00:13:52.56 But if it's very major, they need to go on to Puerto Cabezas, 00:13:52.59\00:13:55.43 which is another five hour bus ride. 00:13:55.46\00:13:57.63 And the bus goes once a day. 00:13:57.67\00:13:59.60 For me to fly that all of the way, from the time they call me 00:13:59.63\00:14:03.94 and I start my airplane, I can have them in Puerto Cabezas 00:14:03.97\00:14:07.64 in an hour and a half. 00:14:07.68\00:14:09.01 So if you have a pregnant lady who is in labor, even to get to 00:14:09.54\00:14:13.18 the closest hospital at twelve hours, if the boat was sitting 00:14:13.21\00:14:16.22 right there ready to go it would be a twelve hour boat ride. 00:14:16.25\00:14:19.35 Generally it's going to be the next day or so before 00:14:19.39\00:14:21.42 they can get the boat. 00:14:21.46\00:14:22.79 So it's usually a couple days before they are going 00:14:22.82\00:14:25.16 to get medical help. 00:14:25.19\00:14:26.53 And I can have them in an hour and a half. 00:14:26.56\00:14:28.10 So there has been a lot of lives that have been saved 00:14:28.13\00:14:29.86 because they can get it quicker. 00:14:29.90\00:14:32.60 Narrator: This is why Adventist World Aviation has a mission 00:14:33.13\00:14:35.70 base placed in this part of Nicaragua; to facilitate 00:14:35.74\00:14:40.28 med-evac flights and save as many people as possible. 00:14:40.31\00:14:44.01 However, this can only be accomplished if Clint can be 00:14:44.05\00:14:48.15 made aware of the flight needs. 00:14:48.18\00:14:50.75 Clint set up many radios around the region to insure 00:14:51.75\00:14:54.99 that he could be reached when there was an emergency. 00:14:55.02\00:14:57.46 His mission here is to help when the Miskito people are in need, 00:14:57.49\00:15:01.90 but if there is no way to communicate 00:15:01.93\00:15:04.83 with the villagers, the Hanley's cannot do the work 00:15:04.87\00:15:07.74 they are here to do. 00:15:07.77\00:15:09.94 Clint: This radio here is in a local motel that is in Waspam. 00:15:10.94\00:15:15.84 And Waspam is our nearest town to our house. 00:15:15.88\00:15:18.88 And this is where a lot of the medical people first come. 00:15:18.91\00:15:22.55 But their cell service is often undependable. 00:15:22.58\00:15:25.09 And so this radio, that I have installed in this place, 00:15:25.12\00:15:28.82 I put an antenna out back and I put a solar panel on. 00:15:28.86\00:15:31.43 And he manages this radio here for the hospital to be able 00:15:31.46\00:15:35.86 to communicate with us, anytime when the power is off 00:15:35.90\00:15:38.33 in the town or when lighting strikes and they don't have 00:15:38.37\00:15:41.17 their cell service. 00:15:41.20\00:15:43.04 And so this is the backup radio for all of the emergency 00:15:43.07\00:15:46.17 communication for the hospital, 00:15:46.21\00:15:47.78 for the government, for anybody else, 00:15:47.81\00:15:49.54 that needs to get a hold of us. 00:15:49.58\00:15:50.91 What we do is we install a solar panel and a battery and a radio 00:15:50.95\00:15:54.18 in the villages we go to, so they can communicate with us. 00:15:54.22\00:15:57.22 The doctors or nurses in the village, or sometimes there is 00:15:57.25\00:15:59.92 no doctors or nurses, but the people are able to communicate 00:15:59.95\00:16:02.02 with us, when they have an emergency. 00:16:02.06\00:16:03.56 Then we also have the same radio installed in our house 00:16:03.59\00:16:06.29 on a communications tower, so that we are able to communicate. 00:16:06.33\00:16:09.53 So, when you are in an area, that there is no communication 00:16:09.56\00:16:12.53 and no electricity you have to be able to know 00:16:12.57\00:16:15.17 how to do all that stuff yourself. 00:16:15.20\00:16:16.71 Put in the communication, and install everything 00:16:16.74\00:16:19.67 so that it's ready to use. 00:16:19.71\00:16:21.08 Narrator: The Hanley's never seem to tire as they continually 00:16:34.92\00:16:37.69 find ways to help the Miskito people. 00:16:37.73\00:16:40.03 If there is no flight to be made Clint happily opens up 00:16:41.06\00:16:44.77 his mechanic work shop and helps villagers with their repairs. 00:16:44.80\00:16:49.24 In this remote area, finding materials, and tools 00:16:50.04\00:16:52.97 is extremely rare. 00:16:53.01\00:16:55.01 This makes it very difficult for the local people 00:16:55.04\00:16:58.11 to provide themselves with a source of income. 00:16:58.15\00:17:00.52 Many have little access to basic supplies or tools they need 00:17:01.32\00:17:06.05 in order to earn a living. 00:17:06.09\00:17:08.09 For this reason, industry in this area is almost non-existent 00:17:08.59\00:17:14.00 The Hanley's seek to change that. 00:17:14.03\00:17:16.77 They want to provide ways for the Miskito people to become 00:17:16.80\00:17:20.87 entrepreneurs and create small industries for themselves. 00:17:20.90\00:17:25.34 And the first step in doing this is by helping them access 00:17:25.37\00:17:29.91 basic supplies. 00:17:29.94\00:17:32.25 Clint: So what we do is buy our nails in town, and then we 00:17:32.75\00:17:37.15 subsidize them for our local area around us at half the price 00:17:37.19\00:17:40.49 So they can buy nails from us at half the price 00:17:40.52\00:17:42.29 that they would in town. 00:17:42.32\00:17:43.66 So they're able to build on their houses 00:17:44.56\00:17:47.70 and work on that better with the nails we give them. 00:17:47.73\00:17:50.97 Narrator: Helping to provide the Miskito people with a source 00:17:56.97\00:17:59.47 of income falls perfectly in line with the mission of this 00:17:59.51\00:18:03.58 Adventist World Aviation base. 00:18:03.61\00:18:05.48 When there are no emergencies or flights to make, Clint helps 00:18:06.48\00:18:10.49 locals by welding repairs on their transportation, 00:18:10.52\00:18:13.42 and even creating new items. 00:18:13.46\00:18:16.56 Clint: To make himself some extra money in town for his 00:18:16.66\00:18:19.36 family, and he finds old scrap metal and he builds these things 00:18:19.39\00:18:23.90 Right now it looks like he's making a thing with a pot. 00:18:23.93\00:18:26.07 He makes anchors several different things 00:18:26.10\00:18:28.00 that people use. 00:18:28.04\00:18:29.37 And I help him by welding the stuff together. 00:18:29.40\00:18:31.51 And he pays for my gas. but I give him a... 00:18:31.54\00:18:33.61 I only charge him for my gas. And so he brings these things 00:18:33.64\00:18:37.05 to weld and I weld them up and he goes to town and sells them. 00:18:37.08\00:18:40.02 Narrator: Today Clint will be helping a local, by welding 00:18:40.52\00:18:44.15 together a grill comprised of materials that the man collected 00:18:44.19\00:18:47.62 The items for use in today's project are an old drum, 00:18:48.32\00:18:51.99 metal frames, and a few fragment pieces of rebar. 00:18:52.03\00:18:56.93 By opening up his shop, Clint is helping this man provide 00:18:56.97\00:19:01.40 for his family. 00:19:01.44\00:19:02.77 There is no industry in this area, so any income a family 00:19:03.00\00:19:06.74 generates is all by substance farming or by small projects 00:19:06.78\00:19:12.38 like this one we see today. 00:19:12.41\00:19:14.52 It will only take Clint a short time to help this man weld 00:19:15.35\00:19:18.45 together his project, but once finished, this man will have 00:19:18.49\00:19:22.59 something he can sell to keep his family fed. 00:19:22.62\00:19:26.90 Although aviation is the primary work of this mission base, 00:19:28.50\00:19:31.90 ultimately, the end goal is always to show the Love of God 00:19:31.93\00:19:36.27 and to help the Miskito people see how important they are 00:19:36.30\00:19:39.84 not only to the missionaries, but also to their Creator. 00:19:40.34\00:19:44.65 By taking the time out of his busy schedule to help this man, 00:19:44.68\00:19:48.82 Clint is sharing the love of Christ. 00:19:48.85\00:19:51.35 He is helping this man generate an income in a place 00:19:51.55\00:19:55.39 where work is not easy to come by. 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.63 Clint: They use this for charcoal. 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.74 They put charcoal in it and they use it in Puerto Cabezas 00:20:06.77\00:20:08.87 in the big towns. Not usually in the little towns, 00:20:08.90\00:20:11.64 but in the big towns, they use it with charcoal. 00:20:11.67\00:20:13.41 And they use it beside the road usually to cook food for people 00:20:13.44\00:20:18.18 like in the little restaurants. 00:20:18.21\00:20:19.68 Occasionally people use it in their houses but this type 00:20:19.71\00:20:21.95 is usually used on the edge of the road in like the market 00:20:21.98\00:20:25.19 areas for people. 00:20:25.22\00:20:26.55 They'll cook and fry stuff there. 00:20:26.59\00:20:29.49 Narrator: Clint and this man have created a simple grill. 00:20:37.60\00:20:40.47 By using discarded items, with the assistance of Clint 00:20:40.50\00:20:44.67 and his tools, this man was able to create an item for resale. 00:20:44.71\00:20:49.24 The Hanley's want to promote and encourage 00:20:49.28\00:20:51.98 this type of mentality. 00:20:52.08\00:20:53.68 They want to help the locals think of ways to help 00:20:53.72\00:20:56.75 bring in income for themselves. 00:20:56.79\00:20:58.85 The Hanley's want to help promote industry among 00:20:58.89\00:21:01.62 the Miskito people by simply utilizing items they can find. 00:21:01.66\00:21:06.43 Marilyn Hanley also finds ways to help the local women create 00:21:06.83\00:21:11.33 items to subsidize their income and bring in enough money 00:21:11.37\00:21:15.37 to feed their families. 00:21:15.40\00:21:16.77 Marilyn: This is coconut oil. 00:21:18.07\00:21:19.97 It's extracted from the coconut through a process of cooking it 00:21:20.21\00:21:24.81 to be able to extract the oil out of the meat. 00:21:24.85\00:21:28.25 The women here do that. It allows them to have 00:21:29.85\00:21:34.36 a little bit extra cash income. To help feed their families 00:21:34.39\00:21:38.13 or buy clothes or send their children to school. 00:21:38.16\00:21:40.90 Another one of the little projects that the women do 00:21:40.93\00:21:44.87 that they have been taught is to make little baskets 00:21:44.90\00:21:48.77 out of pine needles. 00:21:48.80\00:21:50.34 And I don't know all the process that goes into it but they wrap 00:21:50.37\00:21:54.44 these pine needles up with some thread and they design them 00:21:54.48\00:21:57.81 into all kinds of little baskets 00:21:57.85\00:22:01.25 One of the strong points of our mission has been to help 00:22:01.28\00:22:04.85 in economic development. 00:22:04.89\00:22:06.62 We help try to provide work, whenever possible 00:22:06.65\00:22:11.96 to women and men. 00:22:11.99\00:22:13.73 It's much more difficult to provide women with work 00:22:13.76\00:22:16.67 because they have children to care for, they have a house 00:22:16.70\00:22:19.87 to take care of. 00:22:19.90\00:22:21.24 So they are not always available to be able to work. 00:22:21.27\00:22:23.87 There is not always a lot of work for a woman to do. 00:22:23.91\00:22:27.24 And that's made it more challenging to develop certain 00:22:27.28\00:22:30.45 programs where women can earn money to subsidize their family, 00:22:30.48\00:22:36.28 their food and their children's education. 00:22:36.32\00:22:39.29 Narrator: Through helping the Miskito people advance their 00:22:39.99\00:22:42.16 lives, the Hanley's are opening doors to teach them about Jesus. 00:22:42.19\00:22:46.73 The Hanley's enjoy this aspect of their mission work. 00:22:47.03\00:22:50.23 Helping people find opportunities to succeed 00:22:50.27\00:22:53.37 and advance their lives is a rewarding experience. 00:22:53.40\00:22:57.47 The Hanley's feel fortunate, that they have this opportunity 00:22:57.51\00:23:01.11 to serve the people in this area in so many diverse ways. 00:23:01.14\00:23:05.38 Clint: You know, in America, when you go to work, 00:23:05.41\00:23:08.75 8 hours a day and you go back home, 00:23:08.78\00:23:10.75 you are helping a corporation. 00:23:10.79\00:23:13.62 You are able to earn a paycheck from it, 00:23:13.66\00:23:18.23 you are able to put food on the table. 00:23:18.26\00:23:19.63 In this line of work when I walk down the streets in our local 00:23:19.66\00:23:23.06 village, people come to me and they say "thank you for saving 00:23:23.10\00:23:27.24 my life, thank you for helping me." 00:23:27.27\00:23:28.80 We appreciate the fact, that you know they will come up and say 00:23:28.84\00:23:32.74 "you've helped my brother, you flew my brother to town, 00:23:32.77\00:23:35.18 or my sister or me and we want to thank you for that." 00:23:35.21\00:23:38.78 There is very few lines of work that you can walk down the 00:23:38.81\00:23:42.25 street and you can look at the people in your local little town 00:23:42.28\00:23:45.29 and know that several of them that you see right then are 00:23:45.32\00:23:48.16 alive because of the work you did. So it is very fulfilling. 00:23:48.19\00:23:51.06 But at the same time, the credit all goes to the tools 00:23:51.09\00:23:53.60 that the Lord has given me. 00:23:53.63\00:23:55.03 I don't have any extra expertise or anything, 00:23:55.06\00:23:57.97 that anybody else doesn't have. 00:23:58.00\00:23:59.63 All I do is use the tools that the Lord has given me. 00:23:59.67\00:24:02.24 And I am thankful that He has blessed me with those and 00:24:02.27\00:24:04.64 that I am able to pass on as a channel to help the local people 00:24:04.67\00:24:09.24 What He has given me and what you guys send from the States 00:24:09.28\00:24:11.48 to be able to help them. 00:24:11.51\00:24:12.85 And I am that one who get the benefit of seeing the smiles 00:24:12.88\00:24:14.48 on their faces and hears the thank you from them. 00:24:14.52\00:24:16.28 Marilyn: John 10:10 says "I have come so that they might 00:24:17.32\00:24:21.19 have life and have it more abundantly." 00:24:21.22\00:24:23.66 And ultimately our mission has been, that by helping the people 00:24:24.09\00:24:30.87 have a more abundant life, that it has given them 00:24:30.90\00:24:34.64 opportunity to see Jesus in us, to reach out in spiritual 00:24:34.67\00:24:41.58 questions and find a more abundant life through 00:24:41.61\00:24:46.95 the infrastructure, through health care, through education. 00:24:46.98\00:24:50.85 through saving their lives and giving them a second chance, 00:24:50.89\00:24:54.76 through the aviation program. 00:24:54.79\00:24:57.06 Narrator: The work of this mission aviation base runs 00:24:57.99\00:25:00.30 much deeper than just providing logistical support. 00:25:00.33\00:25:03.90 The Hanley's have created a work here in Nicaragua 00:25:04.63\00:25:06.94 that addresses a wide verity of needs. 00:25:06.97\00:25:10.41 Each day, the work here in Tronquera might be different, 00:25:10.91\00:25:14.41 but the end goal is always the same, to help the Miskito people 00:25:14.61\00:25:19.45 Whether it's a construction project, education, 00:25:19.78\00:25:22.58 communications or developing industries, 00:25:23.28\00:25:26.42 Adventist World Aviation is honored to be used by God 00:25:26.72\00:25:30.73 to make such a deep impact here in Nicaragua. 00:25:30.76\00:25:33.40 The villagers can't help but take note of the missionary's 00:25:33.80\00:25:36.83 dedication to help their people. 00:25:36.87\00:25:39.63 The work that Clint is doing here is something that I think 00:25:40.04\00:25:43.77 that the whole area appreciates. 00:25:43.81\00:25:46.07 You know, he has done something wonderful here 00:25:46.11\00:25:49.44 because just to think, 00:25:49.48\00:25:53.31 that someone can use an airplane and fuel and come 00:25:53.35\00:25:57.09 and pick up sick people and take them to Puerto Cabezas 00:25:57.12\00:25:59.59 which is four, four to five hours on the road. 00:25:59.62\00:26:02.92 Bumpy road. Bad road. And this guy comes and picks 00:26:02.96\00:26:06.53 them up and takes them in maybe thirty-five minutes. 00:26:06.56\00:26:09.16 For free! I mean this is free. I mean it's something to be 00:26:09.20\00:26:14.07 really grateful about and we are grateful about the work 00:26:14.10\00:26:18.04 that you guys have done here. 00:26:18.07\00:26:19.54 I think everyone, everyone knows about the little airplane 00:26:19.57\00:26:24.41 that is in La Tronquera. You know. 00:26:24.45\00:26:26.21 That helps people. Helps people. Because the area is considered 00:26:26.41\00:26:32.62 one of the poor areas. 00:26:32.65\00:26:34.92 Most poor areas of Nicaragua and to be able to get your sick, 00:26:34.96\00:26:41.16 very sick person all the way to Puerto Cabezas to get 00:26:41.20\00:26:45.53 a little more help then in Waspam, it's unbelievable. 00:26:45.57\00:26:49.54 And I am thankful. 00:26:49.57\00:26:51.51 Narrator: The projects highlighted in today's episodes 00:26:52.21\00:26:55.04 are just the tip of the iceberg of the work that the Hanley's do 00:26:55.08\00:26:59.25 at this mission. 00:26:59.28\00:27:00.62 The base here in Tronquera never rests. 00:27:00.65\00:27:03.92 There are always new projects and work that can be done 00:27:04.42\00:27:07.72 to help the Miskito people. 00:27:07.76\00:27:09.22 The Hanley's work endlessly to keep up with all the work 00:27:09.76\00:27:12.93 that needs to be done. 00:27:12.96\00:27:14.30 This mission base is thriving and could use many more hands 00:27:16.10\00:27:19.67 to accomplish all the work, that could be done here 00:27:19.70\00:27:22.90 among the Miskito people, God's children. 00:27:23.47\00:27:27.48 Jud: This project has really grown and it has some very 00:27:28.01\00:27:31.01 significant needs moving forward for personnel 00:27:31.05\00:27:33.52 and for equipment. 00:27:33.55\00:27:34.88 We have a 192 we are planning on placing down here 00:27:34.92\00:27:37.65 to improve the resources here. 00:27:37.69\00:27:39.42 We have some families that are interested in coming down 00:27:40.22\00:27:42.92 and being a part of this team. 00:27:42.96\00:27:44.29 And we always need more and not just for this project, 00:27:44.33\00:27:46.29 but for others as well. 00:27:46.33\00:27:47.66 And if mission work is calling you, then you know, 00:27:48.36\00:27:52.83 we should talk about how you can get involved 00:27:52.87\00:27:54.90 with Adventist World Aviation in different projects 00:27:54.94\00:27:57.37 here or elsewhere to fit your skills. 00:27:57.41\00:28:01.14 Clint: Whatever skill you have, when you go to the mission field 00:28:01.18\00:28:04.88 there is probably an area in a mission station 00:28:04.91\00:28:08.45 where you can fit. 00:28:08.48\00:28:09.82 Whether it's communication, you have communication towers, 00:28:09.85\00:28:12.35 radios of all kinds. 00:28:12.39\00:28:13.86 Whether it's electronics, there are all kinds of computer 00:28:13.89\00:28:17.36 related stuff that needs done now a days. 00:28:17.39\00:28:19.16 Between the internet, between that... all of those things. 00:28:19.19\00:28:22.60 And then, the mechanical skills, of any kind are helpful, 00:28:22.63\00:28:27.04 the construction related skills. Medical skills of any kind. 00:28:27.07\00:28:30.04 Whatever skills that you have, 00:28:30.07\00:28:31.47 teaching of all different kinds is helpful. 00:28:31.51\00:28:34.81 Agriculture, to teach the people how to grow things better 00:28:34.84\00:28:38.45 Whatever skill you have, the Lord can generally 00:28:38.48\00:28:41.38 use in a field like this. 00:28:41.42\00:28:44.85 Jud: The Lord will use a willing heart. 00:28:44.89\00:28:46.49 Clint: The Lord created us to serve. 00:28:46.52\00:28:48.46 That's why we are here on earth. 00:28:48.49\00:28:50.73 And it's the most fulfilling thing, to be able to have 00:28:50.76\00:28:54.10 the ability to channel that into a direction 00:28:54.13\00:28:56.70 so you can serve other people. 00:28:56.73\00:28:58.07
