Narrator: Adventist World Aviation has mission outposts 00:00:01.43\00:00:04.43 stationed all around the world with the mission of brining 00:00:04.47\00:00:08.94 humanitarian aid and the love of Jesus, 00:00:08.97\00:00:11.37 too difficult to reach areas. 00:00:11.41\00:00:13.98 Often the missions keep very busy flying med-evict flights, 00:00:14.94\00:00:19.01 delivering critically ill patients from remote jungles 00:00:19.11\00:00:22.48 to a place where they can receive a higher level of care. 00:00:22.52\00:00:25.92 These flights are not only lifesaving, but they share 00:00:26.92\00:00:31.59 the love of Jesus to bring hope to the hopeless. 00:00:31.63\00:00:35.33 Jud: Nicaragua, is a very unique project as are most of 00:00:36.53\00:00:40.34 AWA projects. 00:00:40.37\00:00:41.70 Projects, they are in areas where access is limited. 00:00:41.74\00:00:45.71 They are in places where they are serving people, who have 00:00:45.74\00:00:49.14 have unique needs for access to medicine. 00:00:49.18\00:00:53.52 Have unique needs as far as transportation. 00:00:53.55\00:00:55.88 And the airplane is able to provide that service to those 00:00:55.92\00:00:59.55 people in a very special way. 00:00:59.59\00:01:01.99 It has a huge impact on the lives of the people 00:01:02.32\00:01:05.13 living in these areas. 00:01:05.16\00:01:06.70 You see this project meets the needs of the Miskito people 00:01:06.80\00:01:10.73 in a wide variety of ways. 00:01:10.77\00:01:12.80 Narrator: One of Adventist World Aviation's outposts is situated 00:01:58.91\00:02:02.85 in the northeastern corner of Nicaragua. 00:02:02.88\00:02:05.32 Here Clint Hanley and his family dedicate their lives 00:02:05.95\00:02:09.49 to serving the local Miskito Indians. 00:02:09.52\00:02:12.26 Clint: I'm Clint Hanley and I live in northeast Nicaragua, 00:02:12.79\00:02:17.43 in the upper corner along the boarder of the Rio Cocoa 00:02:17.47\00:02:20.47 with the border of Honduras and I live here with my family, 00:02:21.37\00:02:27.11 2 children and my wife, who is a nurse 00:02:27.14\00:02:29.08 and we fly this airplane, a Cessna 172. 00:02:29.11\00:02:33.42 For medical work all around this region, 00:02:33.45\00:02:38.09 covering about 150 miles in all directions. 00:02:38.12\00:02:42.52 Narrator: Clint and his wife Marilyn live in Tranquera, 00:02:42.92\00:02:45.63 Nicaragua on a mission base, that they constructed themselves 00:02:45.66\00:02:49.36 over 10 years ago. 00:02:49.40\00:02:51.27 In the beginning, there was no infrastructure to support 00:02:52.30\00:02:55.04 any communications, or medical evacuations. 00:02:55.07\00:02:58.44 After a few years of hard work, the Hanley's 00:02:59.44\00:03:02.64 procured an air plane, built a runway themselves 00:03:02.68\00:03:05.91 and successfully implemented the only humanitarian aid 00:03:05.95\00:03:09.98 aviation service in the country. 00:03:10.02\00:03:12.95 This airplane is the first and only aircraft that flies medical 00:03:13.56\00:03:16.99 evacuations from remote villages and delivers patients 00:03:17.03\00:03:20.93 to a larger town called Puerto Cabezas. 00:03:20.96\00:03:24.10 Clint: Since we started flying 7 years ago, I have flown 530 00:03:24.63\00:03:28.10 patients from remote communities or from hospital to hospital 00:03:28.14\00:03:31.87 Before we came, the people got to the hospital by boats, 00:03:31.91\00:03:34.74 by road, by truck. 00:03:34.78\00:03:36.14 To give you an example, to fly from here to San Carlos 00:03:37.05\00:03:39.81 is 35 minutes for me, to get them to the hospital 00:03:39.85\00:03:43.39 from the time I get the call, until they actually arrive 00:03:43.42\00:03:46.32 in the hospital is approximately one and a half hours. 00:03:46.35\00:03:49.02 If they were to take a boat, there's no roads, so they would 00:03:49.06\00:03:52.83 have to take a boat, there's on average of one boat a day, 00:03:52.86\00:03:56.23 but sometimes there will be a day or two or three, 00:03:56.26\00:03:57.77 that go by, that there's no boats. 00:03:57.80\00:03:59.27 They're random. And the boats take 12 hours. 00:03:59.30\00:04:01.94 And usually they leave in the morning. 00:04:01.97\00:04:04.47 So if the accident happens later in the day, they're having to 00:04:04.51\00:04:07.58 wait through the night, until the next morning and then hoping 00:04:07.61\00:04:09.88 that they can find a boat with room in it, 00:04:09.91\00:04:11.61 then they ride that boat 12 hours to get to the hospital. 00:04:11.65\00:04:14.12 That's fairly average for a lot of the patients, that need 00:04:14.15\00:04:17.09 to come to the hospital. 00:04:17.12\00:04:18.65 So you can see where if it's a snake bite, a lot of the people 00:04:18.69\00:04:22.62 we carry are pregnant mothers and babies and either 00:04:22.66\00:04:25.89 the pregnancy has a problem, or the mother has had the baby 00:04:25.93\00:04:28.40 right away, or there's a complication between 00:04:28.43\00:04:30.27 the mother and the baby. 00:04:30.30\00:04:31.63 About 70% of our transports are related to that. 00:04:31.77\00:04:35.24 Narrator: It took many years of working with government 00:04:35.27\00:04:38.17 officials, but Clint was finally able to win their trust. 00:04:38.21\00:04:41.88 Clint: There is none, none other available in all of Nicaragua 00:05:07.77\00:05:11.04 doing this. 00:05:11.07\00:05:12.41 And so it's a vital piece of help, that the government 00:05:12.44\00:05:16.58 and no other aid agency was able to offer to the people 00:05:16.61\00:05:20.12 to save lives in transport. 00:05:20.15\00:05:21.78 Narrator: Clint is now well known amongst the natives 00:05:23.18\00:05:25.59 of this region and everyone knows, that they can call on him 00:05:25.62\00:05:29.29 when they are in need, or have an emergency. 00:05:29.32\00:05:32.76 Relationships like these aren't easy to develop, 00:05:34.00\00:05:36.80 but the Hanley's have lived here for 10 years, and the natives 00:05:36.83\00:05:41.47 have come to accept the missionaries 00:05:41.50\00:05:43.34 as their own Miskito people. 00:05:43.37\00:05:46.07 In this part of Central America, passengers often ride on top 00:05:48.71\00:05:52.95 of a fully loaded cargo bus, which is a common 00:05:52.98\00:05:57.09 and yet dangerous mode of transportation. 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.35 Today, Clint gets word, that one of these cargo buses overturned 00:06:00.66\00:06:04.76 in a ditch and many of its passengers were badly wounded, 00:06:04.79\00:06:08.53 some killed. 00:06:08.56\00:06:10.53 Clint: So its Dr Zunigate in Waspam, and he has a child 00:06:10.57\00:06:15.94 with some brain trouble. 00:06:15.97\00:06:17.64 And they need to go to Managua. So what I do in this case is 00:06:17.67\00:06:21.74 transfer him from the hospital in Waspam to Puerto Cabezas. 00:06:21.78\00:06:25.35 Narrator: Early the next morning Clint prepares to leave and 00:06:26.38\00:06:29.58 collect his awaiting patient, a young 2 year old boy, 00:06:29.62\00:06:33.76 who was crushed under an over turned cargo bus. 00:06:33.79\00:06:37.29 Before he can take off, he must first inspect his aircraft 00:06:38.69\00:06:41.80 and do a preflight inspection. 00:06:41.83\00:06:43.70 This procedure requires Clint to look over every part 00:06:44.23\00:06:48.04 of the aircraft as well check the oil and fuel. 00:06:48.07\00:06:52.24 It's important to make sure everything is fully operational 00:06:52.27\00:06:55.21 before they begin any flight. 00:06:55.24\00:06:56.95 Ones the plane is cleared for flight, Clint taxies 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.65 from the hangar to the runway. 00:07:00.68\00:07:02.72 Clint and his family cleared and constructed this runway 00:07:02.75\00:07:06.62 8 years ago. 00:07:06.65\00:07:07.99 Having the hangar and runway just steps away 00:07:08.02\00:07:10.99 from the Hanley home, expedites the med-evac process. 00:07:11.03\00:07:14.63 Clint now does a run-up to make sure the engine and avionics 00:07:15.53\00:07:19.33 are all running properly. 00:07:19.37\00:07:20.80 He has an electronic pre-flight checklist that he goes through 00:07:21.20\00:07:24.57 before he makes each flight. 00:07:24.61\00:07:26.01 Safety and protocol are extremely important 00:07:27.01\00:07:29.84 when it comes to aviation. 00:07:29.88\00:07:31.85 Clint takes no short cuts when it comes to safety. 00:07:32.15\00:07:36.48 Clint: Ok- Right mag. Both. Left mag. Both. Temperature is good. 00:07:38.19\00:07:44.09 Pressure is good. Charging. Suctions good. Set to go. 00:07:44.13\00:07:49.96 Narrator: Everything seems to be in order and Clint is ready 00:07:51.77\00:07:54.60 to take off and head to Waspam to pick up his very sick patient 00:07:54.64\00:07:59.44 Clint guides this plane down the gravel runway and races 00:07:59.47\00:08:03.95 off into the skies. 00:08:03.98\00:08:05.71 It's a short flight to Waspam. The skies look promising today. 00:08:19.96\00:08:24.57 This is a familiar journey for Clint; many of his patients must 00:08:24.60\00:08:28.54 be picked up from Waspam and taken to Puerto Cabezas. 00:08:28.57\00:08:32.87 Today's flight is the only option of transportation 00:10:03.97\00:10:06.94 for this young boy. 00:10:06.97\00:10:08.30 If he were to travel by road, he would likely have to travel 00:10:08.57\00:10:12.37 in a similar bus, that he had his accident in. 00:10:12.41\00:10:15.64 Additionally, the roads are terribly bad, 00:10:15.68\00:10:18.71 riddled with potholes. 00:10:18.75\00:10:20.82 This young boy, who has a fractured skull and likely 00:10:21.22\00:10:25.39 a brain injury would have to bounce down an incredibly 00:10:25.42\00:10:29.39 bad dirt road for over five hours. 00:10:29.42\00:10:33.60 This journey would definitely worsen his condition 00:10:33.90\00:10:37.13 and potentially end his life. 00:10:37.17\00:10:40.04 But thank God, this young boy won't have to risk 00:10:40.84\00:10:43.84 land travel today. 00:10:43.87\00:10:45.41 Adventist World Aviation is honored to provide lifesaving 00:10:46.41\00:10:50.78 med-evac flights in difficult to reach areas of the world. 00:10:50.81\00:10:54.08 Just by looking out the window of the aircraft, one can easily 00:10:54.48\00:10:58.42 see how rural and thick the jungle is here. 00:10:58.45\00:11:03.22 There are no roads visible and often villagers have to travel 00:11:03.26\00:11:08.06 down a slow winding river to reach aid. 00:11:08.10\00:11:11.53 But with lifesaving flights, the patient can be brought 00:11:11.83\00:11:17.34 to the aid they so desperately need. 00:11:17.37\00:11:19.81 Narrator: Soon the sights of Waspam comes into view. 00:11:34.29\00:11:37.16 This town is used as a port since it is situated 00:11:37.19\00:11:41.20 on the Rio Cocoa River. 00:11:41.23\00:11:43.70 They do have a small runway that is mostly only used by Clint. 00:11:43.73\00:11:48.20 Because the runway doesn't have constant air traffic control, 00:11:48.24\00:11:51.64 the locals don't observe safety guidelines and use the runway 00:11:52.24\00:11:56.04 as part of their daily road system. 00:11:56.08\00:11:58.21 People drive, walk and let their livestock graze on the runway. 00:11:59.21\00:12:03.15 So for this reason, Clint makes a pass over the runway first 00:12:04.15\00:12:08.22 and flies low to the ground to scare off anyone, 00:12:08.26\00:12:10.96 who might be on the runway. 00:12:10.99\00:12:12.96 He then turns the aircraft around and approaches 00:12:13.70\00:12:17.37 for final decent. 00:12:17.40\00:12:19.47 Narrator: This runway is very narrow and not well maintained 00:12:34.42\00:12:36.69 by the town. 00:12:36.72\00:12:38.05 Clint must fully concentrate on his landing to make sure 00:12:38.09\00:12:41.49 he stays on the narrow path. 00:12:41.62\00:12:43.99 Narrator: Clint skillfully brings the aircraft down 00:12:51.43\00:12:54.50 and makes contact with the gravel. 00:12:54.54\00:12:57.01 He has arrived safely to collect his patient. 00:12:57.04\00:13:00.21 As Clint taxies the aircraft off the runway, he looks for 00:13:00.24\00:13:04.15 an ambulance, that should be waiting with his patient 00:13:04.18\00:13:06.65 at the gate. 00:13:06.68\00:13:08.02 But to his disappointment the ambulance has not arrived. 00:13:08.05\00:13:11.75 Time is very critical factor in these situations. 00:13:11.79\00:13:15.76 Clint calls the hospital to check on the status 00:13:15.79\00:13:18.66 of the young boy, he has to med-evac. 00:13:18.69\00:13:20.90 When he reaches the doctors, they have a surprise for Clint. 00:13:21.86\00:13:25.60 Another patient, a 24 year old woman, who was in the bus 00:13:26.00\00:13:30.27 accident, has taken a terrible turn for the worst. 00:13:30.31\00:13:33.48 After careful evaluation the doctor determines that she 00:13:33.51\00:13:36.88 needs this lifesaving med-evac flight immediately. 00:13:36.91\00:13:40.32 They ask Clint if he would be willing to make 2 med-evac 00:13:40.35\00:13:43.89 flights today. One for this unconscious woman and the second 00:13:43.92\00:13:48.39 for the 2 year old boy. Clint accepts the challenge. 00:13:48.42\00:13:52.09 But informs the doctors, that in order to fit all the flights 00:13:52.13\00:13:55.60 into today they must hurry and deliver the patients 00:13:55.63\00:13:59.10 to the airstrips immediately. 00:13:59.13\00:14:01.17 The remote runways here in this part of Nicaragua 00:14:01.20\00:14:04.47 have no lighting. This means that no flight can be made 00:14:04.51\00:14:08.31 after the sun sets. If Clint is to make 2 med-evac flights today 00:14:08.34\00:14:13.05 he must race against the clock. 00:14:13.08\00:14:15.25 While Clint waits for his patient to arrive, 00:14:16.85\00:14:19.32 he witnesses first, hand just how poorly misused the runway is 00:14:19.35\00:14:24.99 here in Waspam. 00:14:25.03\00:14:26.73 The gates are open, the villagers resume motor and foot 00:14:26.76\00:14:30.30 traffic on the runway. 00:14:30.33\00:14:31.77 This practice is unsafe for both the village as well as pilots 00:14:31.80\00:14:35.94 flying into the runway. 00:14:35.97\00:14:37.67 Granted, the general public access to the runway degrades 00:14:37.71\00:14:41.98 and ruins the runway. It creates potholes and grooves in the dirt 00:14:42.01\00:14:47.42 Not to mention the garbage, that is disposed of on the runway. 00:14:47.45\00:14:51.22 The litter carelessly tossed aside on this runway can have 00:14:51.25\00:14:55.96 great consequences for an aircraft. 00:14:55.99\00:14:59.19 But without anyone to enforce the rules, Clint is helpless 00:14:59.23\00:15:03.63 to change the situation. 00:15:03.67\00:15:05.80 While he waits for the patient to arrive, Clint makes use 00:15:05.83\00:15:10.01 of his time and talks again to the local law enforcement, 00:15:10.04\00:15:12.84 and request that they reconsider permanently closing the runway 00:15:12.87\00:15:16.78 to the general public. 00:15:16.81\00:15:18.71 Finally the ambulance pulls up next to the airplane. 00:15:19.71\00:15:22.92 There is only room for 2 passengers on today's flight. 00:15:22.95\00:15:26.45 A nurse will accompany the unconscious woman on her flight 00:15:27.09\00:15:30.16 to Puerto Cabezas. 00:15:30.19\00:15:31.79 Doctors, nurses and family members all exit the vehicle. 00:15:31.83\00:15:35.73 The hospital here doesn't have proper transport equipment. 00:15:35.76\00:15:39.97 So they deliver the patient on a bed mattress. 00:15:40.00\00:15:43.94 The staff pulls the patient from the ambulance and carries her 00:15:43.97\00:15:48.31 to the airplane. 00:15:48.34\00:15:49.68 None is quite sure how to handle the poor woman's limp body. 00:15:50.05\00:15:54.05 Clint takes over and gives instructions on how to place her 00:15:54.35\00:15:58.09 on the backseat of the plane. 00:15:58.12\00:15:59.75 He then will properly strap her in. 00:15:59.79\00:16:02.99 It takes several men to wrap the patient in a blanket, 00:16:04.49\00:16:07.46 then carefully lift her into the airplane. 00:16:07.50\00:16:10.67 There isn't much space to maneuver, so it takes a few 00:16:11.67\00:16:15.24 attempts for the men to place her in the rear of the plane. 00:16:15.27\00:16:18.37 Once inside the nurse helps to adjust her in the seat and make 00:16:19.37\00:16:23.28 her as comfortable as possible. Clint fastens her safely 00:16:23.31\00:16:27.58 into the seat and gets last minute instructions 00:16:27.62\00:16:30.85 from her nurses. 00:16:30.89\00:16:32.22 Communication in this part of the world is very unreliable. 00:16:32.72\00:16:36.39 So Clint must often be a middleman 00:16:36.42\00:16:39.16 between medical providers. 00:16:39.19\00:16:41.33 Once everyone is safely loaded into the plane, 00:16:43.43\00:16:46.20 Clint wastes no time and begins to prepare for takeoff. 00:16:46.23\00:16:50.07 As with every flight he has a preflight checklist 00:16:50.11\00:16:53.58 that he goes through. 00:16:53.61\00:16:54.94 Safety is Adventist World Aviation's top priority. 00:16:54.98\00:16:59.41 The institution has many safety protocols in place 00:16:59.45\00:17:04.19 in all their mission outposts to minimize any risk. 00:17:04.22\00:17:07.89 At the top of his checklist is to always have prayer 00:17:07.92\00:17:12.36 before every single flight. 00:17:12.39\00:17:14.53 Clint: Preflight inspection... 00:17:23.84\00:17:43.53 Narrator: Clint starts the engine. Every moment maters 00:17:43.56\00:17:46.53 in today's flight. He must deliver this patient 00:17:46.56\00:17:49.43 as soon as possible and then make the journey back to pick up 00:17:49.46\00:17:53.23 another critically ill young boy. 00:17:53.27\00:17:55.40 without hesitation Clint pushes the aircraft forward. 00:17:55.44\00:17:59.27 Within moments they are airborne The tires leave the rocky runway 00:17:59.31\00:18:04.48 and they take flight over the jungle canopy. 00:18:04.51\00:18:06.95 Once Clint get to his desired flying altitude, he is able to 00:18:20.53\00:18:24.30 share some details he learned from the patient's nurses. 00:18:24.33\00:18:28.10 This patient is just one of many that were injured 00:18:39.01\00:18:41.88 in the tragic bus accident. 00:18:41.92\00:18:44.32 A fully loaded bus ran into a ditch and overturned, onto 00:18:44.35\00:18:49.16 it's passengers, that were riding on the top of the vehicle 00:18:49.19\00:18:52.49 Many were crushed to death. Others, like today's patient 00:18:52.53\00:18:57.77 very seriously injured. 00:18:57.80\00:18:59.57 But thankfully, Adventist World Aviation is here to help 00:19:00.07\00:19:03.57 and offer med-evac flights to get these patients to the care 00:19:03.61\00:19:08.08 they need, as quickly as possible. 00:19:08.11\00:19:10.81 Without this flight this patient would have no other choice, 00:19:10.85\00:19:14.75 but to travel in a truck, over very treacherous roads, 00:19:14.78\00:19:18.32 on a 5 hours journey. In her current state the patient might 00:19:18.35\00:19:22.16 not survive, such a treacherous journey. 00:19:22.19\00:19:24.63 Her ailing condition demands, that she gets the medical care 00:19:25.33\00:19:28.53 immediately. 00:19:28.56\00:19:29.90 With this flight Clint will have her to the hospital 00:19:29.93\00:19:33.07 in less than an hours' time. 00:19:33.10\00:19:35.24 Thus far the flight is going smoothly and without obstacle. 00:19:49.05\00:19:54.26 From the air it is clear to see, why ground transportation 00:19:54.29\00:19:57.53 is so difficult. Why, as far as the eye can see, there is just 00:19:57.56\00:20:02.96 dense jungle with only rivers cutting through the trees. 00:20:03.00\00:20:06.47 Without this flight this patient might not survive the accident 00:20:07.30\00:20:10.57 she endured. 00:20:10.61\00:20:11.94 Thankfully they are almost halfway to their destination. 00:20:12.47\00:20:16.71 And she will be turned over to the doctors, 00:20:16.75\00:20:19.31 who can properly treat her condition. 00:20:19.35\00:20:21.52 As Clint look unto the horizon, he sees dark clouds 00:20:22.25\00:20:25.75 looming in the distance. 00:20:25.79\00:20:27.42 Storms are not a welcome sight to any small aircraft pilot. 00:20:44.41\00:20:48.54 Thankfully, Clint has much experience in flying 00:20:49.34\00:20:52.48 in this type of weather conditions. 00:20:52.51\00:20:54.68 Clint does all he can to avoid flying in turbulent weather. 00:21:10.77\00:21:14.07 the clouds completely surround the aircraft, 00:21:14.10\00:21:17.04 and there is no visibility outside the aircraft. 00:21:17.07\00:21:21.48 In order to keep this plane on course, Clint must fly by 00:21:21.51\00:21:25.41 what is called IFR. IFR stands for instrument flight rules. 00:21:25.45\00:21:31.12 It calls for instrument flight, because the pilot navigates only 00:21:31.15\00:21:36.36 by reference to the instruments in the cockpit of the aircraft. 00:21:36.39\00:21:40.20 Clint is able to climb above the clouds and away from the storm. 00:21:40.40\00:21:45.40 The young patient in the back remains undisturbed 00:21:45.43\00:21:48.94 as they travel safely on. 00:21:48.97\00:21:52.47 When flying in this dense, thick fog, Clint is completely relying 00:22:10.13\00:22:14.96 on his instruments to keep him on course 00:22:15.00\00:22:17.83 and at a safe altitude. 00:22:17.87\00:22:20.04 He has zero visibility out of his windows. 00:22:20.07\00:22:23.71 The clouds have completely engulfed the airplane. 00:22:23.91\00:22:27.04 As an extra safety precaution, Clint keeps close communication 00:22:27.08\00:22:32.35 with the awaiting control tower at the destination. 00:22:32.38\00:22:35.42 The control tower assures Clint, that there is no other aircraft 00:22:47.10\00:22:50.20 traveling in his line of flight. 00:22:50.23\00:22:52.30 The control tower monitors all traffic in the area 00:22:52.33\00:22:55.84 and communicates with aircrafts to keep midair collisions 00:22:55.87\00:22:59.34 from happening. 00:22:59.37\00:23:00.71 Especially in this type of weather with zero visibility. 00:23:00.74\00:23:05.31 Clint gets another call from the doctors of the village 00:23:05.35\00:23:08.48 he just left. 00:23:08.52\00:23:09.85 They have a third patient, that needs to be med-evaced today. 00:23:27.04\00:23:30.71 After dropping off this patient, Clint will turn around 00:23:30.74\00:23:34.34 and collect two more critically injured children, that need 00:23:34.38\00:23:38.15 immediate medical care today. 00:23:38.18\00:23:41.18 Currently this aviation mission base is the only humanitarian 00:23:41.22\00:23:45.72 aviation support in the entire country of Nicaragua. 00:23:45.75\00:23:49.76 There are no other aviation projects or med-evac services 00:23:49.79\00:23:53.66 to help the people there in Nicaragua. 00:23:53.70\00:23:56.16 This project is the only noncommercial aircraft 00:23:56.77\00:23:59.97 allowed to fly in the skies of Nicaragua. 00:24:00.00\00:24:02.67 Clint must begin his descent into the Puerto Cabezas airport. 00:24:16.52\00:24:21.59 As he lowers his altitude, he is able to finally regain some 00:24:21.62\00:24:25.26 of his visibility. 00:24:25.29\00:24:26.90 The journey for the unconscious woman is now drawing to an end. 00:24:39.21\00:24:42.51 The view of Puerto Cabezas is on the horizon, 00:24:42.54\00:24:45.55 just a few short miles and they'll be safely 00:24:45.58\00:24:48.32 on the ground again. 00:24:48.35\00:24:49.68 Clint reviews his landing procedure to ensure 00:24:49.72\00:24:52.25 everything is prepared for landing. 00:24:52.29\00:24:54.06 The runway is a welcome sight to all. 00:24:59.29\00:25:01.60 Clint makes his final turn. Lines up with the runway 00:25:02.10\00:25:05.63 for landing. This is a nice long runway. 00:25:05.67\00:25:09.40 So he has plenty of room to land a small plane. 00:25:09.44\00:25:12.94 Clint lowers the plane until finally feels those wheels 00:25:12.97\00:25:16.64 of the plane touch the ground. 00:25:16.68\00:25:18.88 Ahhh, we've arrived safely. 00:25:19.88\00:25:22.42 Clint taxies over to the terminal area, where emergency 00:25:23.45\00:25:26.29 medical staff await. 00:25:26.32\00:25:28.09 Everyone here knows Clint well, since they work together 00:25:28.12\00:25:31.59 so frequently. 00:25:31.63\00:25:32.96 The patient seems to have faired well during the flight. 00:25:32.99\00:25:36.46 Now that they are on the ground, there is no time to waste. 00:25:36.50\00:25:40.47 Clint must quickly turn over his patient to the ambulance, 00:25:40.50\00:25:44.37 than race back to Waspam to pick up another batch of patients. 00:25:44.41\00:25:49.81 The ambulance drives right onto the tarmac and pulls up 00:25:51.21\00:25:54.92 right next to the plane. 00:25:54.95\00:25:56.35 Paramedics spring into action and transfer the patient. 00:25:56.79\00:26:00.02 They gently pull her from the plane 00:26:00.06\00:26:02.02 and transfer to a stretcher. 00:26:02.06\00:26:04.59 She is still completely unconscious. 00:26:04.63\00:26:07.36 Showing no signs of awakening. 00:26:07.40\00:26:10.30 The paramedics can see, that she needs immediate 00:26:11.30\00:26:14.77 medical attention. 00:26:14.80\00:26:16.77 With a few careful moves, they place her in the ambulance 00:26:16.81\00:26:19.57 and whisk her away to the hospital. 00:26:19.61\00:26:22.04 As they drive through the village streets, the siren 00:26:22.08\00:26:25.01 rings aloud to announce the arrival of this patient. 00:26:25.05\00:26:27.78 Clint calls ahead to the hospital, so they prepare 00:26:27.82\00:26:31.42 a space for her. And she can be seen by a doctor right away. 00:26:31.45\00:26:36.06 Thankfully, the airport is only a few short miles 00:26:37.26\00:26:40.23 from the hospital. 00:26:40.26\00:26:41.63 It will only be a few more minutes before she'll be seen 00:26:41.66\00:26:44.20 by the doctor and start receiving lifesaving treatment. 00:26:44.23\00:26:48.17 As they pull up to the hospital, the staff works quickly 00:26:49.17\00:26:52.47 to get the patient inside. 00:26:52.51\00:26:54.38 There are many other patients waiting inside to be seen. 00:26:55.58\00:26:58.78 But this emergent patient takes precedent. 00:26:58.81\00:27:02.15 She is taken straight back to a waiting physician. 00:27:02.45\00:27:05.52 Although it's been a busy one, this day is only half over 00:27:06.92\00:27:10.29 for Clint. 00:27:10.33\00:27:11.66 He must now venture back out into the stormy skies 00:27:12.03\00:27:15.26 to give yet another med-evac flight before it gets dark. 00:27:16.46\00:27:20.00 Clint: There is our trip. Let's see. 00:27:21.50\00:27:26.98 Take off, passenger briefing is good, preflight inspection 00:27:28.01\00:27:31.11 fuel sometimes 3 00:27:31.15\00:27:32.68 Narrator: With no time to waste, he starts his engines and turns 00:27:33.68\00:27:37.19 the plane back onto the runway. Clint gets clearance from the 00:27:37.22\00:27:41.76 control tower for takeoff. 00:27:41.79\00:27:43.66 So without hesitation he races down the runway and turns his 00:27:52.80\00:27:55.94 plane north to Waspam. 00:27:55.97\00:27:58.47 Busy days like today are very frequent here in the Adventist 00:28:23.23\00:28:26.20 World Aviation mission outpost in Nicaragua. 00:28:26.23\00:28:29.27 While they might be tired, the Adventist World Aviation pilots 00:28:29.47\00:28:33.34 would have it no other way. 00:28:33.38\00:28:35.31 There are countless ways aviation can help save lives 00:28:36.31\00:28:39.25 here in the jungle. 00:28:39.28\00:28:40.68 They find their work here very fulfilling, 00:28:40.72\00:28:43.82 as they know, they are on God's great mission. 00:28:43.85\00:28:47.79
