Narrator: Adventist World Aviation has outpost 00:00:01.43\00:00:03.83 mission locations scattered all around the world. 00:00:03.87\00:00:06.67 Each project differs in the type of work done, however, 00:00:07.60\00:00:11.41 the underlying purpose of each of the projects is the same; 00:00:11.44\00:00:14.94 to share the love of Jesus with the difficult to reach people 00:00:14.98\00:00:18.68 of this world. 00:00:18.71\00:00:20.05 Each of the Adventist World Aviation projects is situated 00:00:20.38\00:00:23.39 in extremely remote locations. 00:00:23.42\00:00:25.75 Strategically located in remote areas, they serve the indigenous 00:00:26.39\00:00:30.43 people of those regions. 00:00:30.46\00:00:31.99 In light of the Gospel Commission, Adventist World 00:00:32.83\00:00:35.26 Aviation exists to provide logistical air support 00:00:35.30\00:00:39.40 in remote parts of the world, to carry out humanitarian work. 00:00:39.43\00:00:43.71 Jud: Nicaragua, is a very unique project 00:00:44.51\00:00:46.91 as are most of AWA's projects. 00:00:46.94\00:00:49.68 They are in areas where access is limited. 00:00:50.31\00:00:53.35 They are in places where they are serving people, who have 00:00:53.38\00:00:56.28 have unique needs for access to medicine. 00:00:56.32\00:01:01.32 Have unique needs as far as transportation. 00:01:01.36\00:01:03.53 And the airplane is able to provide that service 00:01:03.56\00:01:07.23 to those people in a very special way. 00:01:07.26\00:01:09.36 It was a huge impact on the lives of the people 00:01:10.67\00:01:13.13 living in these areas. 00:01:13.17\00:01:14.50 You see this project meets the needs of the Miskito people 00:01:14.57\00:01:18.17 in a wide variety of ways. 00:01:18.21\00:01:21.01 We're in the Atlantic, northeastern Coast of Nicaragua 00:01:21.04\00:01:25.88 which is the most isolated area of Nicaragua. 00:01:25.91\00:01:29.58 Of course that's where the needs are for the airplane. 00:01:29.62\00:01:31.92 To reach the villages that have very little other access if any. 00:01:32.22\00:01:36.02 Of course medical is the main need that most people need 00:01:37.03\00:01:40.80 and umm... the Hanley's have been able to minister to the 00:01:40.83\00:01:46.90 people here in very unique ways with medical care, 00:01:46.94\00:01:50.64 with medical evacuations, simply caring for their needs. 00:01:50.67\00:01:54.44 And what you will see really especially, is that they have 00:01:54.48\00:01:56.85 touched the people's hearts by learning their language 00:01:56.88\00:01:59.65 by becoming part of their culture. 00:01:59.68\00:02:01.88 Becoming part of their community in a way 00:02:02.58\00:02:06.02 that most people can't do. 00:02:06.05\00:02:07.86 That's again is a unique part of Adventist World Aviation 00:02:08.46\00:02:12.59 and the areas that we reach is we become part of the community. 00:02:12.63\00:02:16.73 We believe in sustainability. Our projects should go on 00:02:16.77\00:02:19.70 for as long as they are needed in those areas. 00:02:19.73\00:02:21.90 In order to do that, of course, it takes a wide variety of 00:02:21.94\00:02:26.04 resources, and primarily people. 00:02:26.07\00:02:28.34 Volunteers that are willing to come and serve for the long term 00:02:28.38\00:02:31.85 Knowing, that they are going to be calling and serving 00:02:31.88\00:02:34.18 the people in areas that may be a little bit difficult to live, 00:02:34.22\00:02:37.89 some challenges, languages, but meeting the needs of the people 00:02:37.92\00:02:42.36 where they are at, in very unique ways. 00:02:42.39\00:02:45.16 Narrator - Recently, Adventist World Aviation adopted a very 00:03:31.57\00:03:34.34 active aviation project in the northeast corner of Nicaragua. 00:03:34.38\00:03:38.91 Clint and his wife Marilyn started this project 00:03:39.91\00:03:43.55 10 years ago with the guidance of God. 00:03:43.59\00:03:47.46 They've developed an amazing, productive and 00:03:47.96\00:03:50.56 thriving aviation mission base. 00:03:50.59\00:03:52.39 The native Miskito people live in dense jungles of Nicaragua. 00:03:52.99\00:03:56.73 They are often overlooked due to their difficult 00:03:56.77\00:03:59.97 geographic location. 00:04:00.00\00:04:02.07 An aviation mission outpost located in this part of the 00:04:02.10\00:04:05.47 country is a perfect solution to help the Miskito people. 00:04:05.51\00:04:08.84 The Hanley's work in Nicaragua is truly a lifesaving mission 00:04:09.54\00:04:13.38 to the Miskito people. 00:04:13.42\00:04:14.95 Clint and his wife started this project with nothing other, than 00:04:14.98\00:04:19.65 a conviction from God that this is what He called them to do. 00:04:19.69\00:04:23.59 Clint flies medevac flights often daily and is truly 00:04:23.63\00:04:27.96 an answer to prayer for the people of this region. 00:04:28.00\00:04:30.87 I'm Clint Hanley and I live in northeast Nicaragua, 00:04:32.37\00:04:36.57 in the upper corner along the boarder of the Rio Cocoa 00:04:36.60\00:04:39.44 with the border of Honduras and I live here with my family, 00:04:40.44\00:04:46.25 2 children and my wife who is nurse and we fly this airplane, 00:04:46.28\00:04:51.15 a Cessna 172, for medical work, all around this region, 00:04:51.19\00:04:57.26 covering about 150 miles in all directions. 00:04:57.29\00:05:01.53 Since we started flying 7 years ago, I have flown 530 patients 00:05:01.56\00:05:06.03 from remote communities, or from hospital to hospital 00:05:06.07\00:05:08.80 and approximately 50-80% of those would have, 00:05:09.20\00:05:14.38 the doctors say would have died for sure, 00:05:14.41\00:05:16.44 had they not had transport. 00:05:16.48\00:05:18.25 The rest of them needed transport because they were 00:05:18.28\00:05:21.98 in great pain, say broken femurs or something like that. 00:05:22.02\00:05:25.45 That, if they would have transported by road it would 00:05:25.65\00:05:28.09 have been a lot worse for them. 00:05:28.12\00:05:29.52 So it's been a big help to the people and we're happy 00:05:29.56\00:05:32.89 to be a small part of it. 00:05:32.93\00:05:34.26 Narrator - Jud Wickwire, vice president of operations 00:05:34.73\00:05:37.30 for Adventist World Aviation, heard about the great work 00:05:37.33\00:05:40.47 that the Hanley family was doing in Nicaragua. 00:05:40.50\00:05:42.87 Since this project is new to Adventist World Aviation, 00:05:42.90\00:05:46.94 Jud wanted a firsthand view of how this base operates. 00:05:46.98\00:05:50.85 Jud - Geographically, this is well situated for serving 00:05:50.88\00:05:56.75 the needs of the people in this area. 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.12 Maybe you could describe why this is good geographically 00:05:58.15\00:06:01.29 and what the needs of the people are that you serve 00:06:01.32\00:06:03.53 with the airplane. 00:06:03.56\00:06:04.89 Clint: This area in Tronquera is right on the Rio Cocoa River 00:06:04.93\00:06:10.47 which is the border between Honduras and Nicaragua. 00:06:10.50\00:06:13.57 It's right in that area and if we go up the river, 00:06:13.60\00:06:19.67 to where the last reaches are of the river, 00:06:19.71\00:06:22.98 versus going to the coastline, where the biggest town is 00:06:23.01\00:06:27.55 where we have the big hospital where we have to bring 00:06:27.58\00:06:30.02 everybody to. 00:06:30.05\00:06:31.39 We're about the half way point in between both of those. 00:06:31.42\00:06:33.19 So we can fly 45 minutes one way and access the town; 00:06:33.22\00:06:36.16 we fly 45 minutes the other way and we are accessing 00:06:36.19\00:06:38.53 the remotest part of Nicaragua, that you can reach, 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.46 of northeast Nicaragua. 00:06:41.50\00:06:43.26 So it made sense to me when I found a runway based 00:06:43.30\00:06:45.77 in this location. This is a beautiful central location. 00:06:45.80\00:06:49.54 The Rio Cocoa River is where a lot of population base is. 00:06:49.57\00:06:53.21 A lot of the main towns are on Rio Cocoa River because 00:06:53.24\00:06:56.18 of the transportation that it brings available. 00:06:56.21\00:06:58.91 Fishing villages, ranches, stuff like that. 00:06:58.95\00:07:02.08 So when you get inland from the Rio Cocoa River 00:07:02.12\00:07:05.15 there's very little roads. 00:07:05.19\00:07:06.62 So there is very few people in there. 00:07:06.65\00:07:10.09 So the Rio Cocoa River is where it's nice to be based along. 00:07:10.13\00:07:12.33 On the other side of the river here is Honduras. 00:07:12.36\00:07:15.36 The right side is Honduras, the left side is Nicaragua. 00:07:16.90\00:07:19.73 This is a boat dock here on the left. 00:07:19.77\00:07:21.84 Where they are loading up boats and they go up, 00:07:21.87\00:07:23.64 up and down the river. 00:07:23.67\00:07:25.01 And about thirty five minutes from here up the river we have 00:07:26.98\00:07:29.41 a remote village we fly to called San Carlos, Rio Cocoa. 00:07:29.44\00:07:33.21 This boat you see coming here, they send everyday up the river, 00:07:33.25\00:07:38.09 boats like this. And this is what the sick people 00:07:38.12\00:07:39.69 have to ride on, is a boat like this. 00:07:39.72\00:07:41.69 Narrator - Jud tries to gain an understanding of just how vital 00:07:41.72\00:07:45.46 aircraft are for those living in this region of Nicaragua. 00:07:45.49\00:07:48.80 Without aviation, critically injured people have 00:07:49.63\00:07:53.40 little chance of survival. 00:07:53.44\00:07:54.90 Without the medevacs this mission provides, 00:07:55.50\00:07:57.74 injured individuals have no quick options to get to 00:07:57.77\00:08:01.34 a higher level of care. 00:08:01.38\00:08:02.84 To reach hospitals by land, it often takes 2 or more days. 00:08:03.55\00:08:07.32 But by air, Clint can deliver patients to the hospital 00:08:08.02\00:08:11.69 within 2 hours. 00:08:11.72\00:08:13.19 Having this mission plane has saved hundreds of lives. 00:08:13.22\00:08:17.53 Often without medevac flights, patients die 00:08:17.56\00:08:21.76 in the long commute from their village to the hospital. 00:08:21.80\00:08:25.47 Jud: If someone gets sick in that village, and needs 00:08:26.00\00:08:28.97 an emergency medevac, what is their alternate 00:08:29.00\00:08:31.21 to being flown out? 00:08:31.24\00:08:32.57 Clint: They take a boat, because there is no roads. 00:08:32.61\00:08:34.94 And the boats go, sometimes once a day a boat goes. 00:08:34.98\00:08:37.85 Sometimes they'll skip a day or two. 00:08:37.88\00:08:40.15 But generally a boat goes once a day. 00:08:40.18\00:08:42.02 That boat costs about five to six days wages to take the boat, 00:08:42.05\00:08:47.72 and, per person. 00:08:47.76\00:08:49.49 And it takes 12 hours to get to Waspam which is the nearest 00:08:49.52\00:08:53.96 hospital they can access. 00:08:54.00\00:08:55.80 And that's not the biggest hospital, that's 00:08:55.83\00:08:57.60 just the very nearest hospital. 00:08:57.63\00:08:58.97 But if it's very major, they need to go on to Puerto Cabezas 00:08:59.00\00:09:01.94 which is another five hour bus ride. 00:09:01.97\00:09:04.37 And the bus goes once a day to get there. 00:09:04.41\00:09:07.08 For me to fly that all of the way, from the time they call me 00:09:07.11\00:09:11.25 and I start my airplane, I can have them in Puerto Cabezas 00:09:11.28\00:09:14.92 in an hour and a half. 00:09:14.95\00:09:16.28 So if you have a pregnant lady who is in labor, even to get to 00:09:16.32\00:09:20.49 the closest hospital at 12 hours, if the boat was sitting 00:09:20.52\00:09:23.56 right there ready to go, it would be a 12 hour boat ride. 00:09:23.59\00:09:26.93 Generally it's going to be the next day or so, before 00:09:26.96\00:09:28.70 they can get the boat. 00:09:28.73\00:09:30.07 So it's usually a couple days, before they are going to get 00:09:30.10\00:09:33.17 medical help. And I can have them in an hour and a half. 00:09:33.20\00:09:35.37 So there has been a lot of lives that have been saved, 00:09:35.40\00:09:37.54 because they can get it quicker. 00:09:37.57\00:09:39.91 Jud: And this, this is the only option, only air option 00:09:39.94\00:09:43.48 in the area for anyone. 00:09:43.51\00:09:45.41 Clint: Yes, There's no commercial flights, 00:09:45.45\00:09:46.95 there's no other airplanes. 00:09:46.98\00:09:48.32 Nobody flies to these airports. In fact, in San Carlos, 00:09:48.35\00:09:51.12 I've never seen another airplane and for thirty years, there's 00:09:51.15\00:09:53.39 never been another airplane, not even military other then me. 00:09:53.42\00:09:56.32 Narrator: Currently, this project is the ONLY humanitarian 00:09:57.33\00:10:00.03 aviation support in the entire country. 00:10:00.06\00:10:03.03 Clint: We have the only ambulance for air travel in all 00:10:04.07\00:10:07.90 of Nicaragua, that can carry oxygen and a stretcher. 00:10:07.94\00:10:10.34 Now we are the only airplane in all of Nicaragua, 00:10:10.37\00:10:13.01 that is able to do this. 00:10:13.04\00:10:15.41 And we are the only airplane, that is based 00:10:15.44\00:10:19.25 on the whole Atlantic coast. 00:10:19.28\00:10:21.05 Narrator: Ten years ago, Clint and Marilyn felt God calling 00:10:21.65\00:10:24.32 them to the mission field. 00:10:24.35\00:10:26.05 They allowed God to show them where He wanted them to go. 00:10:26.09\00:10:30.09 After much prayer, they were convinced, they needed to go 00:10:30.83\00:10:34.80 and work in Nicaragua. 00:10:34.83\00:10:36.83 When they first arrived in Nicaragua, they had no idea 00:10:37.83\00:10:41.20 what God had in store for them. 00:10:41.24\00:10:43.64 Why, they never dreamed they would start 00:10:43.67\00:10:45.87 a mission aviation base. 00:10:45.91\00:10:47.58 They offered their willing hearts to God's 00:10:48.31\00:10:50.21 providential leading. 00:10:50.25\00:10:51.78 Clint: We saw that there wasn't very many missionaries here 00:10:52.11\00:10:54.22 and so that was the kind of area we thought, hey, 00:10:54.25\00:10:57.09 this is an area where nobody else wants go. 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.12 There is probably a reason for that, we knew that, but that is 00:10:59.15\00:11:02.76 the place where you can have a greater impact, because 00:11:02.79\00:11:06.96 the things you are able to do, even on a small scale. 00:11:07.00\00:11:09.86 You know as a little tiny family as one person who is working, 00:11:09.90\00:11:13.34 you are able to impact a lot more people, because 00:11:13.37\00:11:16.30 the needs are so great. 00:11:16.34\00:11:17.67 Narrator: When the Hanley's arrived in Nicaragua, they began 00:11:18.97\00:11:22.41 working in a clinic, where they were faced with 00:11:22.44\00:11:24.51 devastating realities. 00:11:24.55\00:11:26.18 Due to the remote nature of the region, many people would die 00:11:26.21\00:11:30.69 before they could reach medical care in time. 00:11:30.72\00:11:33.12 After about a year of working here, Clint felt impressed to do 00:11:34.12\00:11:38.19 something that had never been done in Nicaragua before: 00:11:38.23\00:11:41.83 offer air ambulance service to jungle villages. 00:11:42.33\00:11:45.53 This plan involved procuring an aircraft as well 00:11:46.53\00:11:49.50 as making a runway. 00:11:49.54\00:11:50.87 Although he had a burden on his heart, Clint had no idea how 00:11:50.91\00:11:56.54 this dream would ever become a reality. 00:11:56.58\00:11:58.91 After spending some time talking together, Clint offered 00:12:14.30\00:12:17.97 to show Jud around the mission base. 00:12:18.00\00:12:20.20 When the Hanley's first arrived in Tronquera, there was no 00:12:20.74\00:12:24.27 infrastructure whatsoever. 00:12:24.31\00:12:25.94 They had to build their home, a hangar, clinic, and even 00:12:25.97\00:12:30.91 a runway, if they wanted to work in this area. 00:12:30.95\00:12:34.05 Clint: When we first came here to Tronquera, we didn't have 00:12:34.08\00:12:36.79 money to really start out very big. 00:12:36.82\00:12:38.99 So we started out with our house just building it really small. 00:12:39.02\00:12:43.63 We had an outhouse out back. We didn't have the money to put 00:12:43.66\00:12:46.33 in a septic system, and running water and everything. 00:12:46.36\00:12:49.13 And we didn't have a vehicle. We rode bikes, 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.90 we had two bicycles. 00:12:51.93\00:12:53.27 One for my wife and one for me. And we could ride those the 00:12:53.30\00:12:56.30 mile to the main road to be able to catch the bus to go to town 00:12:56.34\00:12:59.27 once a month to buy supplies. 00:12:59.31\00:13:00.74 But we did have this runway, that was all over grown 00:13:00.78\00:13:03.58 with pine trees. 00:13:03.61\00:13:05.75 And it doesn't take a lot of money to go out and work, 00:13:05.78\00:13:08.62 clearing the runway and pulling stumps. 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.49 And to rent a chain saw. So I did that everyday, 00:13:10.52\00:13:13.82 working on this. 00:13:13.86\00:13:15.19 We hired local people too to help, because 00:13:15.22\00:13:16.59 labor is fairly cheap. About four dollars a day. 00:13:16.62\00:13:18.99 So I had two or three local people helping me and I worked 00:13:19.03\00:13:22.76 everyday on clearing, on this. 00:13:22.80\00:13:25.07 And I didn't have any possibility of getting a vehicle 00:13:25.10\00:13:29.20 let alone an airplane. 00:13:29.24\00:13:30.57 So I wondered at the end of the day when I would walk sweaty 00:13:30.61\00:13:34.08 and hot back home, and I looked at the clouds floating 00:13:34.11\00:13:36.75 over head the runway and I thought "why am I doing this? 00:13:36.78\00:13:40.08 Is there ever going to be a chance that 00:13:40.12\00:13:42.08 I can use this runway?" Because I don't see any possibility. 00:13:42.12\00:13:45.82 And even other missionaries laughed at me and said 00:13:45.85\00:13:48.92 "why are you doing this? You know, you don't even have 00:13:48.96\00:13:51.49 a vehicle and you think you are going to 00:13:51.53\00:13:52.86 get an airplane some day?" 00:13:52.89\00:13:54.23 But I figured the Lord gave this to me and He gave me the 00:13:54.26\00:13:56.90 money to clear it. 00:13:56.93\00:13:58.27 And so that I didn't have anything else to do. 00:13:58.30\00:14:00.84 I didn't have anywhere else to go at the time. 00:14:00.87\00:14:02.70 And so I figured, if I am a pilot, and I have a runway, 00:14:02.74\00:14:06.07 I am going to put all my effort into getting it the best I can. 00:14:06.11\00:14:09.41 And after I got it cleared, I went and I requested permission 00:14:09.44\00:14:13.55 from the government to be able to get permission for it. 00:14:13.58\00:14:16.12 I was the first person in Nicaragua they said that had 00:14:16.15\00:14:18.42 actually privately cleared a runway and wanted 00:14:18.45\00:14:20.92 to register it themselves. 00:14:20.96\00:14:22.82 That was a new procedure. But they figured out how the 00:14:22.86\00:14:25.33 procedure should be done, and they approved it. 00:14:25.36\00:14:27.93 And then through an amazing train of events, the Lord 00:14:27.96\00:14:32.80 provided an airplane and I was able to bring it down here and 00:14:32.83\00:14:37.04 start helping people down here. 00:14:37.07\00:14:38.41 It took about a year to get the logistics in place just to get 00:14:39.11\00:14:42.74 the airplane down here and get the runway approved. 00:14:42.78\00:14:45.21 I was the first person in Nicaragua building a private 00:14:45.25\00:14:47.98 runway and to go through all of the regulations that it took 00:14:48.02\00:14:51.49 to do that and then bring the airplane into the country 00:14:51.52\00:14:53.99 was a lot of work. 00:14:54.02\00:14:55.56 But the government allowed me to come, because of the work we 00:14:55.59\00:15:00.00 are doing, the humanitarian aid to the Miskito people. 00:15:00.03\00:15:02.56 There is none, none other available in all of Nicaragua 00:15:02.60\00:15:07.30 doing this. 00:15:07.34\00:15:08.67 And so it's a vital piece of help, that the government and 00:15:08.70\00:15:13.14 no other aid agency was able to offer to the people to save 00:15:13.17\00:15:16.58 lives in transport. 00:15:16.61\00:15:17.95 Narrator: Clint had a vision for this runway 00:15:18.68\00:15:20.45 and the great potential it had for humanitarian work. 00:15:20.48\00:15:23.79 Clint: So this is our runway. It's 3700 feet long. 00:15:25.32\00:15:28.89 And you can see out this direction 00:15:28.92\00:15:30.46 there is a hill on that end. 00:15:30.49\00:15:32.19 And down this way it ends in a - over a river. 00:15:32.23\00:15:35.63 And it's about twice the length, that I need 00:15:35.66\00:15:41.20 for my airplane to use. 00:15:41.24\00:15:43.00 So it's nice to have a home strip that you use all the time 00:15:43.04\00:15:46.17 that is a lot longer, then what you really need. 00:15:46.21\00:15:48.14 So you have that ability, if you have a tail wind, or a heavy 00:15:48.18\00:15:51.11 load, that you have the ability to have a little extra cushion 00:15:51.15\00:15:56.75 on your flying. 00:15:56.79\00:15:58.72 It used to be completely covered by pine trees. These pine trees 00:15:58.75\00:16:02.12 that you see on the edges here were completely covering it. 00:16:02.16\00:16:05.19 You couldn't tell any difference in the pine trees now covering 00:16:05.23\00:16:07.96 the runway and on the edges of it. 00:16:08.00\00:16:09.86 And It took about a year, between a year and two years 00:16:09.90\00:16:12.17 to get it all cleared, the stumps pulled out of it. 00:16:12.20\00:16:14.90 It took a lot of work with a pick and a shovel and then you 00:16:14.94\00:16:18.31 had to haul dirt in where you pulled the stumps out. 00:16:18.34\00:16:20.11 Fill the dirt in to places where the stumps used to be, 00:16:20.14\00:16:22.84 so you didn't get settling. 00:16:22.88\00:16:24.38 Took a lot of work, but now it's a beautiful runway 00:16:25.08\00:16:27.85 and it works really nice. 00:16:27.88\00:16:29.22 We cut the runway, the grass about between every month 00:16:29.25\00:16:32.85 and every other month, depending on the season 00:16:32.89\00:16:34.89 how fast the grass is growing. 00:16:34.92\00:16:36.32 But people cut it with a machete, just like this. 00:16:36.36\00:16:39.26 And it takes 12 guys to cut it, one day. 00:16:39.29\00:16:42.96 So each person works one day on it. 00:16:43.00\00:16:45.40 And they just cut the grass with their machetes, and they bend 00:16:45.43\00:16:48.07 down and cut the grass like this. 00:16:48.10\00:16:49.44 And they do that all day long, cutting. 00:16:49.47\00:16:52.47 We give each person a size chunk that they can cut. 00:16:52.51\00:16:55.28 And they can cut it beautiful. 00:16:55.31\00:16:58.61 It looks really good when they are done. 00:16:58.65\00:17:00.02 And that enables them do get money to use for whatever they 00:17:00.05\00:17:03.35 need to support their families. 00:17:03.39\00:17:05.32 Narrator: Once the runway was finished, they focused on 00:17:06.32\00:17:08.49 setting up a sustainable mission base. 00:17:08.52\00:17:11.56 Because Tronquera is such a remote village, the Hanley's 00:17:11.59\00:17:15.93 had to find a way to generate power for their base. 00:17:15.96\00:17:18.80 This far into the jungle, why there is no power or 00:17:19.80\00:17:22.54 communications infrastructure. 00:17:22.57\00:17:24.41 To have a successful aviation airbase, the Hanley's needed to 00:17:25.21\00:17:28.74 find a solution to provide them with both electricity 00:17:28.78\00:17:32.68 and a way to communicate with nearby villages. 00:17:32.95\00:17:35.88 Clint: So running in the background here 00:17:36.89\00:17:38.25 is my hydroelectric system. 00:17:38.29\00:17:39.62 This has a fourteen foot drop and it runs a banki turbine. 00:17:40.22\00:17:43.09 I have a twelve volt wire you can see running across. 00:17:43.12\00:17:46.70 And that runs to our house and charges twelve volt batteries 00:17:46.73\00:17:50.40 that run our power for our house. 00:17:50.43\00:17:52.03 With hydro, is one of the most efficient ways that you can get 00:17:53.03\00:17:56.20 power from and it can run twenty four hours a day. 00:17:56.24\00:17:58.97 I don't actually use it twenty four hours a day, but I use it 00:17:59.01\00:18:01.61 to backup our solar system. 00:18:01.64\00:18:02.98 And it's a real big advantage to have. 00:18:03.01\00:18:05.31 It also runs our emergency radios. 00:18:05.35\00:18:07.68 We run two radios for emergency communication. 00:18:07.72\00:18:11.19 Narrator: Clint continues the tour of the base and takes Jud 00:18:12.82\00:18:15.46 to one of the most vital sections of the base, 00:18:15.49\00:18:17.66 the communication tower. 00:18:17.69\00:18:19.89 Jud: Obviously if you go into remote areas, 00:18:20.50\00:18:22.23 communication is a huge factor. 00:18:22.26\00:18:24.53 And Adventist World Aviation is, you know our policy is 00:18:24.57\00:18:29.70 to create transpiration and communications infrastructures 00:18:29.74\00:18:33.54 in remote areas. And this is a prime example. 00:18:33.58\00:18:36.18 Can you explain a little bit about how your communication has 00:18:36.88\00:18:40.92 helped with other ministries, other organizations, government, 00:18:40.95\00:18:46.02 health and those things and how you have been involved in that. 00:18:46.05\00:18:49.26 Clint: Yah when we first moved here, there was no cell service 00:18:49.29\00:18:53.29 of any kind. 00:18:53.33\00:18:54.66 And so radios is what everything we relied on. 00:18:54.70\00:18:56.56 And we started out with two meter radios, ham radios, 00:18:56.60\00:18:58.90 and amateur radios is what we call them in the states. 00:18:58.93\00:19:02.10 And that worked, we would put a, in a local village where 00:19:02.90\00:19:07.74 we were flying, we'd put a solar panel and a battery. 00:19:07.78\00:19:10.15 And put an antenna up and then they can communicate with us 00:19:10.18\00:19:14.05 when there was an emergency. 00:19:14.08\00:19:15.42 And that worked quite well and they were able to communicate 00:19:15.78\00:19:19.35 with us and the hospital saw that and said "wow this is 00:19:19.39\00:19:21.72 really working good. Could we put an antenna up at your house 00:19:21.76\00:19:24.03 too and you could have a radio from us?" 00:19:24.06\00:19:25.83 And they have their own communication network. 00:19:25.86\00:19:28.23 And so they gave me one of their radios. 00:19:28.26\00:19:30.67 They're a Motorola set up on crystal controlled setup and so 00:19:30.70\00:19:34.17 I put one of their antennas up on my tower 00:19:34.20\00:19:38.64 and have their system. 00:19:38.67\00:19:40.01 So they can communicate from Waspam when there's emergencies. 00:19:40.04\00:19:43.28 So they communicate directly with us for that and then they 00:19:43.31\00:19:47.35 also have some of the meemessa radios, it's government, 00:19:47.38\00:19:50.52 it's called meemessa, it's government health program. 00:19:50.55\00:19:53.79 Their radios are also in some of the remote communities. 00:19:53.82\00:19:56.52 So they communicate directly with us from runways that they 00:19:56.56\00:19:59.73 have in the communities. And the doctor in the community than can 00:19:59.76\00:20:02.33 call directly to us to schedule flights and tell us you know 00:20:02.36\00:20:05.63 that there is a person here that's coming in. 00:20:05.67\00:20:07.37 Or that somebody is coming down the river to us right now 00:20:07.40\00:20:09.37 and we need them to be transported out. 00:20:09.40\00:20:11.51 So especially with cell service not being here, radio was, 00:20:11.54\00:20:19.01 we were reliant on it and it was extremely crucial. 00:20:19.05\00:20:22.58 Other mission stations around, the Tasba Raya Adventist Clinic 00:20:22.62\00:20:25.12 that was a ways away, they used us a lot for communications, 00:20:25.15\00:20:28.89 as a third party because we had internet, they didn't have 00:20:28.92\00:20:31.39 internet, but they had a radio so with medical emergencies, 00:20:31.43\00:20:35.23 with anything they had, family, needed to contact anybody, 00:20:35.26\00:20:38.73 they would send emails to us, and we would tell them 00:20:38.77\00:20:40.94 over the radio what it was. 00:20:40.97\00:20:43.30 And right now on the river there is a family up the river also 00:20:43.34\00:20:47.38 that their only communication is a radio to us. 00:20:47.41\00:20:50.35 They have no other communication. 00:20:50.38\00:20:51.81 Narrator: Having reliable communication is essential 00:20:51.85\00:20:54.65 for the type of work Clint and Marilyn do in this remote area. 00:20:54.68\00:20:58.39 Having an aircraft to offer lifesaving medevac flights 00:20:58.42\00:21:02.32 is useless, if injured patients can't contact Clint 00:21:02.36\00:21:06.53 when they need help. 00:21:06.56\00:21:07.90 Having radios, and a way to communicate with each village 00:21:07.93\00:21:11.47 was a large project to undertake but it has proven to be well 00:21:11.50\00:21:16.24 worth the efforts. 00:21:16.27\00:21:17.67 Next Clint takes Jud to show him the airplane and hangar. 00:21:20.38\00:21:24.91 Clint: There's one place in Managua that builds structures, 00:21:24.95\00:21:27.52 and so I went there and asked them about a custom built 00:21:28.02\00:21:31.95 structure that would fit my airplane. 00:21:31.99\00:21:33.42 And it's 58 feet wide and 35 feet long 00:21:33.46\00:21:36.73 and it's covered with a tarp. 00:21:36.76\00:21:38.23 The tarp will last three to five years and so they built this 00:21:38.26\00:21:42.53 whole thing on a jig based on my specifications. 00:21:42.73\00:21:46.07 They bent the metal and everything. 00:21:46.10\00:21:48.27 This is water pipe that they used, a type of water pipe 00:21:48.30\00:21:51.77 and they bent it, galvanized pipe, they bent it 00:21:51.81\00:21:54.18 to fit the standards that they needed. 00:21:54.21\00:21:57.25 And so then it was shipped across the country in a semi. 00:21:57.28\00:22:00.48 It took it 3 days to get here. 00:22:00.52\00:22:02.02 It used a third of a semi to get here and we hauled it over here 00:22:02.05\00:22:06.69 across the creek because there was no bridge to get here so 00:22:06.72\00:22:09.86 we hauled it across the creek to make it to our place. 00:22:09.89\00:22:13.13 And it's 21 feet tall. So it took some doing to get it put up 00:22:13.16\00:22:17.93 We used pine trees and propped pieces up and climbed up little, 00:22:17.97\00:22:21.90 tiny, rickety ladders. We didn't have good ladders to use. 00:22:21.94\00:22:25.27 And managed to get it all stood up and welded pieces together 00:22:25.31\00:22:29.11 on it that we needed to weld and the whole structure made it up 00:22:29.14\00:22:33.38 and the tarp went over and it fit perfectly, 00:22:33.42\00:22:36.32 just like they designed it to fit. I was very impressed. 00:22:36.35\00:22:38.99 And it has been a tremendous blessing to have it because 00:22:39.02\00:22:43.16 the plane is out of the weather, and also the sun damages the 00:22:43.19\00:22:47.30 interior of the airplane even when you put stuff on the 00:22:47.33\00:22:50.00 windshield to stop that, it hazes the windshield then. 00:22:50.03\00:22:52.50 So it has helped a lot. 00:22:52.53\00:22:55.17 Narrator: It took the Hanley's many years to construct 00:22:56.20\00:22:58.24 this mission base. 00:22:58.27\00:22:59.61 The entire project is built to be self-sustaining 00:23:00.48\00:23:03.95 with no access to power, communications or public water. 00:23:03.98\00:23:08.18 The Hanley's were able to turn this remote jungle property into 00:23:09.22\00:23:13.66 a beautiful mission compound that is self-sustaining, 00:23:13.69\00:23:17.43 and fully operational. 00:23:17.46\00:23:19.43 They harness the local water source for their power 00:23:20.20\00:23:23.47 and plumping. 00:23:23.50\00:23:24.83 They constructed communication towers to reach those in need. 00:23:25.17\00:23:28.90 The airplane has a safe shelter. 00:23:29.70\00:23:31.84 But this mission outpost still isn't complete. 00:23:32.27\00:23:35.14 There are enormous amounts of space for growth. 00:23:35.64\00:23:38.78 So Clint takes Jud around the property and shows him 00:23:39.78\00:23:42.98 locations, where they can build additional homes for more 00:23:43.02\00:23:47.09 missionaries for this project. 00:23:47.12\00:23:49.26 Clint: This is another possible building site. 00:23:49.29\00:23:51.69 A house used to be here back in the 1970's. 00:23:51.73\00:23:54.40 It was called the green house. 00:23:54.43\00:23:55.76 And our pond is over on that side, and our house 00:23:55.80\00:23:57.73 and this house was right here on the edge of the Likos River. 00:23:57.77\00:24:00.20 And it's still got mango trees and still have flowers, that are 00:24:00.24\00:24:04.47 planted in neat rows back in the seventies 00:24:04.51\00:24:07.04 that grow every year still. 00:24:07.08\00:24:08.41 Narrator: The Hanley family is overloaded with the amount 00:24:08.61\00:24:11.08 of work they have to do here in Nicaragua. 00:24:11.11\00:24:14.55 The thriving missionary base is teeming with opportunities 00:24:15.28\00:24:18.55 for service. 00:24:18.59\00:24:19.92 It has now reached a point where there is too much work 00:24:19.99\00:24:23.36 for just one family to do. 00:24:23.39\00:24:25.33 This project is undergoing enormous amounts of growth. 00:24:27.13\00:24:30.27 The Hanley's were excited to invite Adventist World Aviation 00:24:31.27\00:24:34.60 to take over the project in Nicaragua and expand it 00:24:34.64\00:24:39.47 by adding 3 families to the project. 00:24:39.51\00:24:41.54 The Kaboos family, the Karst family and the Hansen Family 00:24:42.04\00:24:47.92 have accepted the call to join the Nicaragua project. 00:24:47.95\00:24:51.35 Clint: The Miskito people are extremely thankful 00:24:52.69\00:24:54.92 that we are here. 00:24:54.96\00:24:56.29 They are very very happy with the work we do and they are 00:24:56.32\00:24:59.66 very thankful, that we are able to help them when they need it. 00:24:59.69\00:25:03.87 And I do tell them that it's not anybody in Nicaragua that is 00:25:03.90\00:25:08.24 paying for it. 00:25:08.27\00:25:09.60 No government, no hospital is paying for this, it's the people 00:25:09.64\00:25:13.07 in America, the fellow Christians, who are 00:25:13.11\00:25:15.48 sending money down to pay for the gasoline 00:25:15.51\00:25:17.61 and help keep the airplane flying, that's helping them. 00:25:17.65\00:25:20.52 Narrator: Adventist World Aviation is honored to take over 00:25:21.78\00:25:24.19 such a fantastic project, that is saving lives both physically 00:25:24.45\00:25:28.62 and eternally. 00:25:28.66\00:25:30.46 The Hanley family started this project 10 years ago. 00:25:31.46\00:25:35.03 And During this time, God has worked through them to make 00:25:35.76\00:25:39.67 a profound impact on this region. 00:25:39.70\00:25:41.90 Jud: They have worked really really hard to build up 00:25:42.54\00:25:44.51 this base, and they have shown much ingenuity and had so much 00:25:44.54\00:25:50.55 dedication of time and resources to put this together 00:25:50.58\00:25:55.82 and make it happen. 00:25:55.85\00:25:57.19 I mean God has blessed the activity here! 00:25:57.22\00:25:59.49 He has blessed the work that they have done 00:25:59.52\00:26:01.02 with the people here. 00:26:01.06\00:26:02.39 The people have benefited enormously from the time that 00:26:02.42\00:26:04.66 they have been able to spend here working. 00:26:04.69\00:26:06.19 And we just are so excited to be able to continue this project. 00:26:06.23\00:26:09.46 To continue putting resources here to help the Miskito people 00:26:09.50\00:26:13.94 and to help share the love of Jesus with these people, 00:26:13.97\00:26:18.51 who might not otherwise receive it without this type of, 00:26:18.54\00:26:21.58 you know the airplane and the recourses that we can bring here 00:26:21.61\00:26:25.85 Narrator: They have been faithful missionaries, who truly 00:26:26.25\00:26:28.82 love the people they came to serve. 00:26:28.85\00:26:31.09 However, the Hanley's realize, that they didn't do this work 00:26:31.12\00:26:35.86 on their own. 00:26:35.89\00:26:37.23 No, God was with them all the way. 00:26:37.26\00:26:40.40 Clint: In this line of work, when I walk down the street 00:26:41.43\00:26:45.70 in our local little village, people come to me, and they say 00:26:45.73\00:26:49.44 "Thank you for saving my life! Thank you for helping me!" 00:26:49.47\00:26:51.87 And we appreciate the fact that, you know they will come up and 00:26:51.91\00:26:55.58 say "you've helped my brother. You flew my brother to town, 00:26:55.61\00:26:58.21 or my sister or me, and we want to thank you for that." 00:26:58.25\00:27:01.88 And there's very few lines of work, that you can walk down 00:27:01.92\00:27:04.92 the street and you can look at the people in your local little 00:27:04.95\00:27:07.92 town and know that several of them that you see right then, 00:27:07.96\00:27:10.99 are alive because of the work you did. 00:27:11.03\00:27:12.69 So it is very fulfilling, but at the same time, the credit 00:27:12.73\00:27:15.46 all goes to the tools that the Lord has given me. 00:27:15.50\00:27:17.93 I don't have any extra expertise, or anything that 00:27:17.97\00:27:21.30 anybody else doesn't have. 00:27:21.34\00:27:22.67 All I do is use the tools that the Lord has given me. 00:27:22.70\00:27:25.17 And I am thankful that He has blessed me with those, 00:27:25.21\00:27:27.18 and I am able to pass on as a channel to help the local people 00:27:27.21\00:27:32.21 what He's given me and what you guys send from the States 00:27:32.25\00:27:34.38 to be able to help them. 00:27:34.42\00:27:35.75 And I am the one who gets the benefit of seeing the smiles 00:27:35.78\00:27:37.32 on their faces and hear the thank you from them. 00:27:37.35\00:27:39.29 Marilyn: We cannot do this, and we did not do this, to live in 00:27:39.32\00:27:44.49 Nicaragua, and build what we have. 00:27:44.53\00:27:46.26 We are supported by financial supporters, we're supported 00:27:47.26\00:27:53.23 by prayer warriors, we are supported by the village 00:27:53.27\00:27:57.41 that we live in, other missionaries, 00:27:57.44\00:28:00.11 the list goes on and on about the amount of people, time, 00:28:00.14\00:28:05.38 energy, that has gone into making this mission a help 00:28:05.41\00:28:11.99 to the Miskito people. 00:28:12.02\00:28:13.36 And ultimately, it is through God's power, that anything 00:28:13.56\00:28:18.66 has been done down here. 00:28:18.69\00:28:20.03 Through His permission, through His allowance, 00:28:20.36\00:28:23.43 through His divine directions, we have been His hands. 00:28:23.47\00:28:29.70 It's not been our dream to build this mission, 00:28:29.74\00:28:32.14 to work in northeast Nicaragua. 00:28:32.44\00:28:34.94 It was His dream, and when He called we simply answered 00:28:34.98\00:28:38.05 that we would go. 00:28:38.08\00:28:39.41 Since then, He has developed this into the mission, 00:28:39.45\00:28:43.72 that He wants it to be. 00:28:43.75\00:28:45.09
