Adventist World Aviation 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 has a mission outpost in Guyana, South America, 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.13 servicing the northwestern part of the country 00:00:05.17\00:00:07.60 with Aviation Services, 00:00:07.64\00:00:09.74 such as medevac, delivering supplies, 00:00:09.77\00:00:13.07 and spreading the gospel. 00:00:13.11\00:00:15.18 This mission outpost has been in existence 00:00:15.21\00:00:17.51 for well over 10 years now and just thriving. 00:00:17.55\00:00:20.85 They use airplanes as a vital tool 00:00:20.88\00:00:23.32 to serve the local Guyanese people 00:00:23.35\00:00:25.95 and share the love of Jesus with them. 00:00:25.99\00:00:28.99 There is such a great need 00:00:29.02\00:00:30.63 for emergency flights from deep in the jungle 00:00:30.66\00:00:33.63 that they need two aircraft to keep up 00:00:33.66\00:00:35.63 with the flight request demands. 00:00:35.66\00:00:38.40 As you can imagine life 00:01:29.78\00:01:31.15 in a remote jungle mission field 00:01:31.19\00:01:33.52 can be quite different and challenging 00:01:33.56\00:01:36.02 from what we experience here in North America. 00:01:36.06\00:01:39.86 Nothing about living in the jungle is simple. 00:01:39.89\00:01:42.83 Yet the Labore family 00:01:42.86\00:01:44.57 has been living here for nine years, 00:01:44.60\00:01:47.57 serving the local Amerindian people 00:01:47.60\00:01:50.77 at the Adventist World Aviation mission 00:01:50.81\00:01:52.77 outposts in Guyana. 00:01:52.81\00:01:54.64 Jungle living is not always ideal. 00:01:54.68\00:01:57.28 And every day is full of unexpected challenges 00:01:57.31\00:02:00.02 that they must face. 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.02 Originally, the Labore's came to the logistical support 00:02:02.05\00:02:05.69 for missionaries already in the area. 00:02:05.72\00:02:08.99 However, over time Bill and Laura 00:02:09.02\00:02:11.59 had to become adaptable 00:02:11.63\00:02:13.26 in order to keep the project running. 00:02:13.29\00:02:16.00 Well, I've always said that you can fly all day, 00:02:16.03\00:02:18.73 but if you don't win anybody to Christ, 00:02:18.77\00:02:20.90 what are we doing here? 00:02:20.94\00:02:22.44 And in the beginning, we are set up to be the helpers 00:02:22.47\00:02:26.88 or the providers for missionaries 00:02:26.91\00:02:29.14 that were here working. 00:02:29.18\00:02:30.51 We don't have anybody here 00:02:30.55\00:02:31.91 that's here just working as a missionary. 00:02:31.95\00:02:34.18 And so we found ourselves doing double duty. 00:02:34.22\00:02:36.85 We see such a need everywhere we look. 00:02:36.89\00:02:39.32 There's, it's almost overwhelming 00:02:39.35\00:02:41.56 with all the needs and all the opportunities, 00:02:41.59\00:02:43.89 things are just ripe here. 00:02:43.93\00:02:46.06 There is no such thing 00:02:46.09\00:02:47.43 as a typical day in this jungle mission field. 00:02:47.46\00:02:50.67 Here in Guyana every day is uniquely different 00:02:50.70\00:02:54.14 with unexpected challenges to be met. 00:02:54.17\00:02:56.91 As the Labore's start their day, 00:02:56.94\00:02:58.97 they never know what to expect. 00:02:59.01\00:03:01.48 Despite whatever plans they may have for the day, 00:03:01.51\00:03:04.88 they could get a call for an emergency flight 00:03:04.91\00:03:07.98 or there could be a local emergency 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.15 that needs immediate attention. 00:03:10.19\00:03:12.55 But over the years, 00:03:12.59\00:03:13.92 the Labore's have learned to just take each day 00:03:13.96\00:03:17.09 as a new adventure 00:03:17.13\00:03:18.76 and be adapted to the circumstances. 00:03:18.79\00:03:21.93 Basically, you really can't plan things here 00:03:21.96\00:03:24.67 and expect the day is going to go exactly 00:03:24.70\00:03:26.74 the way you think is going to go. 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.44 It never works that way. 00:03:28.47\00:03:30.91 Someone comes to the door, 00:03:30.94\00:03:32.57 or a phone call changes everything. 00:03:32.61\00:03:35.04 Somebody's sick, 00:03:35.08\00:03:36.41 you got to now take the vehicle up, 00:03:36.44\00:03:37.78 pick them up, take them to the hospital 00:03:37.81\00:03:39.15 when you really had a plan to be at home, 00:03:39.18\00:03:40.78 working on, you know, whatever. 00:03:40.82\00:03:43.79 So that can be difficult. 00:03:43.82\00:03:49.59 The Labore's day begins very early. 00:03:49.62\00:03:52.29 Laura, a pilot, a nurse, wife, and mother 00:03:52.33\00:03:56.26 has many responsibilities resting on her shoulders. 00:03:56.30\00:03:59.90 Before the day gets too hectic, 00:03:59.93\00:04:02.14 she begins preparing a meal for her family. 00:04:02.17\00:04:05.67 They must make all their food from scratch. 00:04:05.71\00:04:09.51 Since they live in a remote village, 00:04:09.54\00:04:11.58 they do not have access to many supplies. 00:04:11.61\00:04:14.12 So they must find time in their busy schedules 00:04:14.15\00:04:17.22 to make even the most basic foods. 00:04:17.25\00:04:20.26 Shortly, many hungry mouths 00:04:20.29\00:04:22.42 will be showing up at the breakfast table. 00:04:22.46\00:04:27.30 One of the ministries the Labore family started 00:04:27.33\00:04:30.07 was to open up their home and feed hungry students 00:04:30.10\00:04:33.67 before they go to school each day. 00:04:33.70\00:04:36.81 Here in Guyana, very high percentage 00:04:36.84\00:04:38.84 of these students go to school with no food to eat. 00:04:38.87\00:04:43.31 One of the areas that we are involved in that 00:04:43.35\00:04:46.05 we didn't really plan on is outreaching 00:04:46.08\00:04:48.68 to some of the local children. 00:04:48.72\00:04:50.39 Some of them don't have enough 00:04:50.42\00:04:51.89 to eat breakfast in the morning 00:04:51.92\00:04:53.25 and when we got here, we noticed that 00:04:53.29\00:04:54.62 they weren't even going to school at all. 00:04:54.66\00:04:56.62 And so they start coming 00:04:56.66\00:04:59.53 and hanging out at our house playing 00:04:59.56\00:05:00.90 with our kids and asking for food. 00:05:00.93\00:05:03.97 And we realized that when they were going to school, 00:05:04.00\00:05:06.63 they're going with empty bellies. 00:05:06.67\00:05:08.70 When we started as they come in the morning, 00:05:08.74\00:05:10.44 and we usually would give them bread and butter and bananas 00:05:10.47\00:05:12.81 or some kind of fruit, just the basics, and feed them, 00:05:12.84\00:05:16.75 have worship with them if we have time, 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.88 and then they go off to school. 00:05:18.91\00:05:20.42 And they just love coming to our house not only to play 00:05:20.45\00:05:23.82 but also for food, 00:05:23.85\00:05:25.19 and it's been a really good outreach. 00:05:25.22\00:05:27.06 They've started coming to Sabbath school now in church 00:05:27.09\00:05:30.16 and enjoying worship, 00:05:30.19\00:05:33.70 and also doing better in the schoolwork. 00:05:33.73\00:05:35.86 They'll come back from school, 00:05:35.90\00:05:37.23 excited to show me their exercise book 00:05:37.27\00:05:38.97 and they'll say, "Look, Sister Laura, 00:05:39.00\00:05:40.34 look what I did in school today!" 00:05:40.37\00:05:41.70 And so it's kind of a guess taken on a motherly figure 00:05:41.74\00:05:45.54 and even though I was thought 00:05:45.57\00:05:47.04 I was busy enough for the children. 00:05:47.08\00:05:48.41 After breakfast, Laura and Bill redirect their attention 00:05:48.44\00:05:51.71 to having their morning devotions, 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.18 with not only their children, 00:05:54.22\00:05:56.12 but also neighborhood guests as well. 00:05:56.15\00:05:59.99 Anyone is welcome to join them 00:06:00.02\00:06:01.99 as Laura reads Bible stories to them. 00:06:02.02\00:06:05.53 Afterward Bill prays 00:06:05.56\00:06:07.86 a prayer blessing over their day's activities. 00:06:07.90\00:06:12.23 Bill and Laura, both have endless lists 00:06:12.27\00:06:14.70 of responsibility that rests on their shoulders. 00:06:14.74\00:06:18.81 They desperately need someone to help share their workload. 00:06:18.84\00:06:23.18 Well, last year in 2013, 00:06:23.21\00:06:25.71 we had four student missionaries here 00:06:25.75\00:06:28.05 and it was fantastic. 00:06:28.08\00:06:29.78 We have never had so much help 00:06:29.82\00:06:31.65 and had our lives made, have been more productive, 00:06:31.69\00:06:34.76 I should say, and that we had so many responsibilities 00:06:34.79\00:06:37.33 that we normally do in the home, 00:06:37.36\00:06:39.93 taken over by these young people. 00:06:39.96\00:06:41.70 And it enabled us to do more ministry, 00:06:41.73\00:06:44.17 more flights or things that we're here to do. 00:06:44.20\00:06:47.80 And it was fantastic. 00:06:47.84\00:06:49.17 Now this year we have zero, and I don't know what happened. 00:06:49.20\00:06:52.17 It went from four to zero. 00:06:52.21\00:06:53.54 And that's been very hard on all of us 00:06:53.58\00:06:55.18 because we all have our primary 00:06:55.21\00:06:57.31 and secondary responsibilities, 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.11 but then our primary responsibility 00:06:59.15\00:07:01.58 above all, as parents, 00:07:01.62\00:07:02.95 we have children and they have to be taught. 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.29 And so homeschooling for our children, 00:07:05.32\00:07:09.22 I'll speak of ours only but when my wife 00:07:09.26\00:07:12.56 is out flying for me as project manager 00:07:12.59\00:07:14.96 from 9 o'clock in the morning 00:07:15.00\00:07:16.73 till 3 o'clock in the afternoon, 00:07:16.77\00:07:18.27 I'm nothing but a teacher. 00:07:18.30\00:07:19.63 I mean, not that a teacher's, 00:07:19.67\00:07:21.00 teacher's a great responsibility, 00:07:21.04\00:07:23.04 and I'm happy to do it. 00:07:23.07\00:07:24.71 But I can't do that 00:07:24.74\00:07:26.07 some of my other responsibilities 00:07:26.11\00:07:27.44 that the day dictates that I should be doing 00:07:27.48\00:07:29.31 and so I get behind my work. 00:07:29.34\00:07:31.65 Since there are no student missionaries 00:07:31.68\00:07:33.72 here this year, 00:07:33.75\00:07:35.18 Bill and Laura must juggle the responsibility 00:07:35.22\00:07:38.02 of homeschooling their children. 00:07:38.05\00:07:40.49 In the past, they were able to share this duty 00:07:40.52\00:07:43.56 with student missionaries, 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.43 then, they could focus on their work for the project. 00:07:45.46\00:07:48.80 But this year the Labore's 00:07:48.83\00:07:50.40 are homeschooling their children 00:07:50.43\00:07:52.43 on their own while still operating 00:07:52.47\00:07:54.67 a full time Aviation Project. 00:07:54.70\00:07:57.57 When I was younger homeschooling my children 00:07:57.61\00:07:59.94 is something that never crossed my mind. 00:07:59.97\00:08:01.94 It's something that I would be doing. 00:08:01.98\00:08:03.81 But here we have to homeschool them. 00:08:03.85\00:08:05.71 They have to be on the American system. 00:08:05.75\00:08:08.02 So that when we do go back, they can fit into any classroom 00:08:08.05\00:08:11.89 and we've done the best that we can. 00:08:11.92\00:08:15.02 It's really, really hard 00:08:15.06\00:08:16.39 if we don't have a student missionary. 00:08:16.42\00:08:17.93 The first three years we did it on our own, 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.86 but then it just got too hard. 00:08:19.89\00:08:22.46 Sometimes I'll be homeschooling 00:08:22.50\00:08:23.87 and then I get a call for medevac. 00:08:23.90\00:08:25.30 I have to drop everything I'm doing to go do the medevac. 00:08:25.33\00:08:28.20 Bill then has to step and drop in everything that he's doing 00:08:28.24\00:08:31.24 so he can finish the homeschool, 00:08:31.27\00:08:32.61 so it's very disjointed. 00:08:32.64\00:08:34.44 And the last three years we've been very, very blessed 00:08:34.48\00:08:37.05 to have some really amazing student missionaries to help us 00:08:37.08\00:08:40.35 and these are people... 00:08:40.38\00:08:42.15 And not just student missionaries, 00:08:42.18\00:08:43.52 but also other volunteers 00:08:43.55\00:08:44.89 have come to pinch it when needed. 00:08:44.92\00:08:47.72 And to help homeschool 00:08:47.76\00:08:50.13 is just really a full time job almost. 00:08:50.16\00:08:53.40 And we don't have a homeschool teacher this year, 00:08:53.43\00:08:55.33 it's been very, very difficult for both families to try 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.93 and juggle everything that we're doing, 00:08:58.97\00:09:00.90 maintenance on the plane and flying and homeschooling 00:09:00.94\00:09:03.57 and our ministries is very, very hard. 00:09:03.61\00:09:05.97 As they've homeschooling 00:09:06.01\00:09:07.34 their own children wasn't enough, 00:09:07.38\00:09:09.44 Laura has taken a special interest 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.38 in helping a young 14-year-old boy 00:09:11.41\00:09:14.52 who is unable to read or write. 00:09:14.55\00:09:17.29 So every day Gregory comes to the Labore home 00:09:17.32\00:09:21.39 and is homeschooled along with Danny and Micah. 00:09:21.42\00:09:24.89 And there's a young boy here and his name is Gregory. 00:09:24.93\00:09:28.53 He's kind of grown up in our home. 00:09:28.56\00:09:30.50 Over the years, we've had lots of children 00:09:30.53\00:09:32.73 and just coming in and out of our homes, 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.64 feeding them and playing with my kids' toys 00:09:34.67\00:09:37.27 and having worship with them, 00:09:37.31\00:09:38.84 just giving them a safe environment to be in. 00:09:38.87\00:09:41.28 And Gregory was one of those children 00:09:41.31\00:09:42.88 that kind of grew up with us 00:09:42.91\00:09:44.41 and he actually became best friends with Micah. 00:09:44.45\00:09:47.32 As he got older, 00:09:47.35\00:09:49.12 he started making some bad choices. 00:09:49.15\00:09:51.32 He comes from a very, very rough home, 00:09:51.35\00:09:53.56 where his father died, his mother forsaken 00:09:53.59\00:09:56.69 and kind of growing up on the streets 00:09:56.73\00:09:58.53 if we had streets... 00:09:58.56\00:10:00.16 Yeah, just nowhere to really even go to live, 00:10:00.20\00:10:02.56 nowhere to... 00:10:02.60\00:10:03.97 He owns nothing, he has nothing, 00:10:04.00\00:10:06.17 he just kind of bounced around from house to house, 00:10:06.20\00:10:08.07 whoever will take him in. 00:10:08.10\00:10:09.67 And he just started making some bad choices, 00:10:09.70\00:10:12.47 breaking into homes, that sort of thing, 00:10:12.51\00:10:14.81 running around with the wrong crowd. 00:10:14.84\00:10:16.64 And we found out he is completely illiterate. 00:10:16.68\00:10:20.72 And he's 14 years old. 00:10:20.75\00:10:23.08 And so we are now tutoring him and trying to get him 00:10:23.12\00:10:26.39 just some of the basic reading and math skills 00:10:26.42\00:10:28.49 because there's a really awesome college. 00:10:28.52\00:10:31.46 It's a technical college or trade school, 00:10:31.49\00:10:34.90 where you can go and children can learn 00:10:34.93\00:10:37.63 how to do carpentry, electrical work, 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.64 machinery, you know, 00:10:40.67\00:10:43.20 just basic trades when they're done 00:10:43.24\00:10:44.77 then they can go and get an apprenticeship. 00:10:44.81\00:10:47.64 And so Gregory really wants to get into this 00:10:47.68\00:10:50.18 but he has to be literate before he can join. 00:10:50.21\00:10:52.01 So we're working really, really hard with him 00:10:52.05\00:10:53.85 to get him to the school. 00:10:53.88\00:10:55.82 The Labore's have a fine line 00:10:55.85\00:10:58.62 to walk as they operate a busy aviation ministry 00:10:58.65\00:11:02.79 while not neglecting the responsibilities 00:11:02.82\00:11:06.80 they have as parents. 00:11:06.83\00:11:10.80 The afternoon takes Bill and Laura to the airstrip. 00:11:21.74\00:11:25.35 It's imperative that 00:11:25.38\00:11:26.92 they keep both the airplanes in top working conditions, 00:11:26.95\00:11:30.79 and always prepared for flight. 00:11:30.82\00:11:33.52 They never know when a call will come in for an emergency. 00:11:33.56\00:11:38.36 And they always need to be 00:11:38.39\00:11:39.83 standing by to immediately make the life saving flight. 00:11:39.86\00:11:44.40 Today, they have a little upkeep 00:11:44.43\00:11:46.00 and maintenance to do as well as 00:11:46.03\00:11:47.70 the task of fueling the aircraft. 00:11:47.74\00:11:49.67 Well, getting fuel to this area as you know, 00:11:49.70\00:11:52.11 airplanes run on fuel, we can't do anything, 00:11:52.14\00:11:53.88 if we don't have fuel. 00:11:53.91\00:11:55.28 And when we first got to Guyana, 00:11:55.31\00:11:57.08 we were exploring how we would handle that. 00:11:57.11\00:11:59.41 So actually, what we do is we, when we go into, 00:11:59.45\00:12:02.08 when a pilot flies into town, we fill up all the tanks 00:12:02.12\00:12:06.55 and we fly the airplane back to Mabaruma 00:12:06.59\00:12:08.69 and then we siphon out the amount of fuel 00:12:08.72\00:12:10.09 that we don't need. 00:12:10.13\00:12:11.46 We keep the minimum in there to get to Georgetown. 00:12:11.49\00:12:13.46 Like their groceries, the missionaries can only get 00:12:13.50\00:12:16.56 gasoline in Georgetown. 00:12:16.60\00:12:19.60 They have however devised a system to ensure 00:12:19.63\00:12:22.94 they always have extra fuel here at home. 00:12:22.97\00:12:26.07 So they're never left stranded. 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.81 Siphoning fuel out so we can store fuel here. 00:12:28.84\00:12:31.31 We do hinterland flights without going to Georgetown. 00:12:31.35\00:12:33.82 We need to have extra fuel stored here 00:12:33.85\00:12:35.55 and we can't actually ship it in barrels. 00:12:35.58\00:12:39.02 So we have to fly it in on the airplane, 00:12:39.05\00:12:40.59 take it out here. 00:12:40.62\00:12:41.96 We leave the minimum in to get to Georgetown 00:12:41.99\00:12:43.43 and then, you know, 00:12:43.46\00:12:45.69 hopefully we can go back to Georgetown and refill, 00:12:45.73\00:12:47.83 just keep storing it that way until we really need it. 00:12:47.86\00:12:50.40 Over the past few years 00:12:50.43\00:12:51.77 the Labore's have become accustomed 00:12:51.80\00:12:54.07 for tasking student missionaries 00:12:54.10\00:12:56.00 to help them with simple maintenance needs, 00:12:56.04\00:12:59.61 as the fueling of the airplanes. 00:12:59.64\00:13:02.34 This is proven to be a tremendous help. 00:13:02.38\00:13:05.11 The project is always greatly blessed 00:13:05.15\00:13:07.12 by having student missionaries help with cleaning the planes, 00:13:07.15\00:13:11.85 helping the mechanics with routine maintenance, 00:13:11.89\00:13:15.12 fueling the airplanes and loading the planes. 00:13:15.16\00:13:18.73 By having extra hands to help ease the workload, 00:13:18.76\00:13:22.06 they accomplish so much more and focus their attention 00:13:22.10\00:13:26.40 on the growth and expansion of the project. 00:13:26.43\00:13:29.80 This year, however, they've not been so fortunate. 00:13:29.84\00:13:33.27 With no student missionaries to help, 00:13:33.31\00:13:35.94 they must find the time 00:13:35.98\00:13:37.31 to do all the plane maintenance themselves. 00:13:37.35\00:13:41.65 Even in the bad weather the work must go on. 00:13:41.68\00:13:44.22 Laura does her best to keep working 00:13:44.25\00:13:46.72 with whatever circumstances she is given. 00:13:46.76\00:13:51.26 Laura and Bill have finished prepping 00:13:51.29\00:13:53.46 the plane just in time. 00:13:53.66\00:13:57.03 They have just received a call 00:13:57.07\00:13:58.93 for an emergency medevac flight. 00:13:58.97\00:14:02.10 Today's passenger is a pregnant woman 00:14:02.14\00:14:05.47 who is having complications, 00:14:05.51\00:14:07.94 and her baby's life is in danger. 00:14:07.98\00:14:11.31 They don't have any time to waste. 00:14:11.35\00:14:13.92 Even though they've had a busy day already, 00:14:13.95\00:14:16.99 the Labore's cannot slow down now. 00:14:17.02\00:14:20.19 They must devote their full attention 00:14:20.22\00:14:22.29 to helping keep this woman and her baby alive. 00:14:22.32\00:14:27.23 The missionaries cannot fly after dark, 00:14:27.26\00:14:30.20 since there are no lights on the runways, 00:14:30.23\00:14:33.54 so they must load the patient 00:14:33.57\00:14:35.74 get in the skies very soon 00:14:35.77\00:14:37.61 in order to make this flight during the daylight hours. 00:14:37.64\00:14:41.34 Well, with a rainstorm 00:14:41.38\00:14:42.71 approaching the flying conditions 00:14:42.74\00:14:44.55 have worsened 00:14:44.58\00:14:46.15 and the weather threatens to slow them down. 00:14:46.18\00:14:49.55 Nevertheless, take care for proceed 00:14:49.58\00:14:52.19 to load the patient into the back of the plane. 00:14:52.22\00:14:55.96 This can sometimes be tricky. 00:14:55.99\00:14:58.79 Laura climbs into the back of the plane 00:14:58.83\00:15:01.63 and carefully helped slide the patient 00:15:01.66\00:15:04.43 from the stretcher on to the airplane seat. 00:15:04.47\00:15:09.67 This is a very scary time for both the patient 00:15:09.70\00:15:13.41 and the family surrounding her. 00:15:13.44\00:15:15.74 Flying to Georgetown 00:15:15.78\00:15:17.75 is an unknown experience for her. 00:15:17.78\00:15:21.98 And none of them, 00:15:22.02\00:15:23.79 she or the family know what to expect. 00:15:23.82\00:15:27.02 So to help calm their nerves and give them peace, 00:15:27.06\00:15:31.76 Laura offers a prayer over there. 00:15:31.79\00:15:35.26 There's God who loves you so very, very much. 00:15:35.30\00:15:37.70 And we know that God's a great physician. 00:15:37.73\00:15:39.77 And pray that His healing hand will be his shield, Lord. 00:15:39.80\00:15:43.07 And they still reach home and got saved very, very soon. 00:15:43.10\00:15:46.78 In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. 00:15:46.81\00:15:49.21 Laura now finishes strapping in the young mother. 00:15:49.24\00:15:53.01 The flight will be just over an hour, 00:15:53.05\00:15:55.95 a nurse travels with the patient 00:15:55.98\00:15:57.99 to make sure that the patient 00:15:58.02\00:15:59.35 is stapled throughout the flight. 00:15:59.39\00:16:02.59 AWA pilots have had 00:16:02.62\00:16:04.26 pregnant mothers deliver their babies 00:16:04.29\00:16:06.96 in the planes while airborne! 00:16:07.00\00:16:09.53 What an adventure! 00:16:09.56\00:16:11.53 So for this reason, 00:16:11.57\00:16:13.13 they like to take a nurse along with them 00:16:13.17\00:16:15.64 to help if the patient's condition 00:16:15.67\00:16:17.67 changes while in flight. 00:16:17.71\00:16:20.34 The patient is finally loaded into the airplane 00:16:20.38\00:16:23.85 and now they can begin their journey to Georgetown. 00:16:23.88\00:16:27.18 Today's flight will be directly 00:16:27.22\00:16:28.75 into the capital of Guyana 00:16:28.78\00:16:30.52 to deliver this patient 00:16:30.55\00:16:31.95 to a hospital that can better help her 00:16:31.99\00:16:35.26 and the new unborn child. 00:16:35.29\00:16:38.79 Over the next hour, 00:16:38.83\00:16:40.16 the flight will take them over raw jungle terrain. 00:16:40.20\00:16:44.13 If this plane 00:16:44.17\00:16:45.50 and the mission post were not in Guyana, 00:16:45.53\00:16:49.50 this mother would have no hope of making this journey. 00:16:49.54\00:16:53.64 The opportunity to make this flight today 00:16:53.68\00:16:55.74 is truly life saving! 00:16:55.78\00:16:58.25 As Laura guides the plane toward Georgetown, 00:16:58.28\00:17:01.95 the skies begin to clear 00:17:01.98\00:17:04.49 and the clouds begin to dissipate. 00:17:04.52\00:17:07.92 Although this day has been a busy one, 00:17:07.96\00:17:10.46 Laura wouldn't have it any other way. 00:17:10.49\00:17:13.43 Her life here in Guyana isn't always easy 00:17:13.46\00:17:17.07 and her days rarely go as planned. 00:17:17.10\00:17:20.04 But Laura knows she's on God's mission. 00:17:20.07\00:17:24.11 After an hour long flight, 00:17:24.14\00:17:26.47 the coastline begins to come into view. 00:17:26.51\00:17:29.51 This is a welcome view 00:17:29.54\00:17:31.01 for all aboard this medevac flight. 00:17:31.05\00:17:34.55 Soon they reach the runway safely 00:17:34.58\00:17:37.15 and land the aircraft. 00:17:37.19\00:17:39.52 Thankfully, the ambulance 00:17:39.55\00:17:40.89 is standing by ready to pick up the patient. 00:17:40.92\00:17:44.16 She's quickly turned over to the medics. 00:17:44.19\00:17:47.00 The completion of this medevac means 00:17:47.03\00:17:49.63 they have saved yet another life. 00:17:49.66\00:17:53.00 Praise God. 00:17:53.03\00:17:54.37 I don't think it's a sacrifice to live here at all. 00:17:54.40\00:17:56.14 In fact, I think there's lots of lessons. 00:17:56.17\00:17:57.81 It's a huge blessing. 00:17:57.84\00:17:59.17 There's so many days when I just wake up 00:17:59.21\00:18:00.54 and I used to think, 00:18:00.58\00:18:01.91 "Oh, just praise God for my job. 00:18:01.94\00:18:03.28 I think I have the best job in the world." 00:18:03.31\00:18:05.38 And even though some days are hard, 00:18:05.41\00:18:07.02 every day is full of excitement and stuff. 00:18:07.05\00:18:09.12 And sometimes just day-to-day living here can be hard. 00:18:09.15\00:18:11.89 So I missed the conveniences. 00:18:11.92\00:18:13.25 Yes, I miss family, I miss friends, 00:18:13.29\00:18:15.66 but it's really worth it because of all the other things 00:18:15.69\00:18:19.69 that we get to do here. 00:18:19.73\00:18:21.46 I mean, there's no way I could have a job like this 00:18:21.50\00:18:23.77 in the States where I get to fly one day 00:18:23.80\00:18:25.53 and do nursing the next day, and, you know, 00:18:25.57\00:18:27.70 washing the airplane the next day. 00:18:27.74\00:18:29.40 And so, for a person who doesn't really like 00:18:29.44\00:18:31.77 scheduled in the box type job, it's perfect. 00:18:31.81\00:18:36.01 It's actually very peaceful. 00:18:36.04\00:18:37.65 And it's a good way to live 00:18:37.68\00:18:39.71 and we do have job satisfaction. 00:18:39.75\00:18:43.39 A lot of people don't have job satisfaction, 00:18:43.42\00:18:45.32 they hate their jobs and I love it. 00:18:45.35\00:18:46.89 Because I think 00:18:46.92\00:18:48.26 if you completely submit to God, 00:18:48.29\00:18:49.66 He is going to take you 00:18:49.69\00:18:51.03 and help you do what your talents are. 00:18:51.06\00:18:53.73 He knows best what your talents are, 00:18:53.76\00:18:55.13 'cause He is the one that gave them to you. 00:18:55.16\00:18:56.97 And so, if you submit to Him, He's gonna take you 00:18:57.00\00:19:00.20 and grow you and make you blossom 00:19:00.24\00:19:03.67 into something that you never thought you could be. 00:19:03.71\00:19:07.28 Since Laura is in Georgetown, 00:19:18.62\00:19:20.62 she now has opportunity to do her grocery shopping. 00:19:20.66\00:19:24.79 Since they never know 00:19:24.83\00:19:26.16 when the next trip to town will be, 00:19:26.19\00:19:28.63 they typically try to do 00:19:28.66\00:19:30.00 all their shopping in large quantities, 00:19:30.03\00:19:32.40 for pantries at home are almost empty. 00:19:32.43\00:19:35.64 So Laura heads to the market to restock her kitchen. 00:19:35.67\00:19:40.34 Like most everything else, 00:19:40.38\00:19:42.14 grocery shopping in Guyana is much different than here 00:19:42.18\00:19:45.41 in North America. 00:19:45.45\00:19:47.68 The open air markets 00:19:47.72\00:19:49.05 are alive with vendors selling their fresh goods. 00:19:49.08\00:19:52.42 Laura's been shopping here for nine years 00:19:52.45\00:19:55.36 and knows exactly where she can get 00:19:55.39\00:19:57.09 the freshest fruits and vegetables. 00:19:57.13\00:20:00.50 She's developed a friendship over the years 00:20:00.53\00:20:02.60 with these vendors. 00:20:02.63\00:20:04.17 And they're always happy to see her. 00:20:04.20\00:20:07.10 Getting groceries here again is an adventure. 00:20:07.14\00:20:11.07 All to its own. 00:20:11.11\00:20:13.41 Where we live in Mabaruma is a town, 00:20:13.44\00:20:16.24 they have a market, but they only have the basics. 00:20:16.28\00:20:19.88 It's very hard to get fruits and vegetables. 00:20:19.91\00:20:22.08 And we pay about twice as much here. 00:20:22.12\00:20:24.55 It's ironic, we live in the middle of a jungle 00:20:24.59\00:20:26.42 and we can't get fruits and vegetables very easily. 00:20:26.45\00:20:29.72 But we can go to Georgetown, the capital city, 00:20:29.76\00:20:32.36 and there's a plethora of fruits and vegetables there 00:20:32.39\00:20:35.76 that we can get in a whole lot cheaper. 00:20:35.80\00:20:37.93 And, but even in Georgetown, it's different than at home. 00:20:37.97\00:20:42.60 It's not like Vons where you just get 00:20:42.64\00:20:44.27 a little shopping cart and you fill everything up 00:20:44.31\00:20:46.07 and you put in your cart and go. 00:20:46.11\00:20:47.58 There's, you get all your dry goods 00:20:47.61\00:20:50.05 in one store, 00:20:50.08\00:20:51.41 and then you go halfway across town 00:20:51.45\00:20:53.31 and that's where the fresh goods are. 00:20:53.35\00:20:55.02 It's like a farmers' market. 00:20:55.05\00:20:56.62 And so we get everything there. 00:20:56.65\00:20:57.99 And you go to one man and get fruits, 00:20:58.02\00:21:00.42 and then you go to the lady and you get your vegetables. 00:21:00.46\00:21:02.99 After she collects all her fresh produce, 00:21:07.90\00:21:10.77 Laura loads everything 00:21:10.80\00:21:12.20 into the taxi and heads back to the airport. 00:21:12.23\00:21:15.60 She only has a short amount of time 00:21:15.64\00:21:17.57 to get back to her village before the sun sets. 00:21:17.61\00:21:21.14 It's been a full day, but it's not over yet. 00:21:21.18\00:21:24.91 She still has to make the journey back to her family 00:21:24.95\00:21:28.48 and attend to them. 00:21:28.52\00:21:30.02 You pack everything up, 00:21:30.05\00:21:31.39 and you put it all on the back of a car, 00:21:31.42\00:21:33.29 and then we take it to the airport 00:21:33.32\00:21:35.49 where we then load the plane up, 00:21:35.52\00:21:37.86 and we fly it in... 00:21:37.89\00:21:40.16 Meanwhile, Laura is on her flight home. 00:21:40.20\00:21:45.17 Bill's had a busy day as well. 00:21:45.20\00:21:48.20 A few months ago he committed 00:21:48.24\00:21:50.11 to regular Bible studies with a nearby church. 00:21:50.14\00:21:54.18 He dedicates his evening 00:21:54.21\00:21:55.54 to travelling to a nearby village 00:21:55.58\00:21:57.25 and teaching the church biblical truths 00:21:57.28\00:21:59.65 that they have never heard before. 00:21:59.68\00:22:02.18 The village members all congregate 00:22:02.22\00:22:04.29 in their local church 00:22:04.32\00:22:05.65 to meet with Bill and read the Bible together. 00:22:05.69\00:22:08.66 I've taken them through a lot of studies 00:22:08.69\00:22:11.23 on the Sabbath and Daniel 2, Daniel 7, 00:22:11.26\00:22:16.13 we're into Revelation 13 now, 00:22:16.16\00:22:18.67 and the light is beginning to come on. 00:22:18.70\00:22:20.44 They were very resistant to the Sabbath idea at first 00:22:20.47\00:22:23.14 and still are somewhat, 00:22:23.17\00:22:24.91 but they're beginning to see the issue. 00:22:24.94\00:22:26.78 And I think they're realizing 00:22:26.81\00:22:29.54 they've been told a lot of things 00:22:29.58\00:22:30.91 that are not in the Bible. 00:22:30.95\00:22:33.05 Bill's been studying with this congregation 00:22:33.08\00:22:35.02 for months now. 00:22:35.05\00:22:36.89 They become good friends 00:22:36.92\00:22:38.25 and enjoy the time spent together 00:22:38.29\00:22:39.79 focusing on God's message of love. 00:22:39.82\00:22:45.03 Bill closes the Bible with prayer. 00:22:45.06\00:22:47.33 He knows that the Holy Spirit 00:22:47.36\00:22:48.70 is working here in the hearts of this church. 00:22:48.73\00:22:51.37 And he's excited to be a part of God's work here in Guyana. 00:22:51.40\00:22:56.50 With the sun setting in the west, 00:22:56.54\00:22:59.14 the Labore Family once again reunites at their home 00:22:59.17\00:23:04.05 after a very busy day. 00:23:04.08\00:23:07.45 We wish we could say that it's time to relax, 00:23:07.48\00:23:11.75 but that isn't the case. 00:23:11.79\00:23:14.66 They still have to sort and put away all the groceries 00:23:14.69\00:23:17.33 that Laura brought home from town. 00:23:17.36\00:23:20.63 As you can imagine, 00:23:20.66\00:23:22.00 refrigeration space is at a premium here. 00:23:22.03\00:23:25.50 So they must store as much as they can 00:23:25.53\00:23:28.37 in plastic Tupperware containers 00:23:28.40\00:23:30.97 to keep bugs and rodents out of the food. 00:23:31.01\00:23:35.31 Everything must be packed away in order to ensure 00:23:35.34\00:23:37.91 that this shopping trip lasts them 00:23:37.95\00:23:40.92 for a few weeks. 00:23:40.95\00:23:42.32 Once we get here, then Bill 00:23:42.35\00:23:44.15 or someone will come out and meet us with a truck 00:23:44.19\00:23:46.35 and we load the truck up and then drive it to her house 00:23:46.39\00:23:49.46 and then we carry it 00:23:49.49\00:23:50.83 about two flights of stairs to our house 00:23:50.86\00:23:52.83 and then we unpack it all. 00:23:52.86\00:23:54.20 So we do that every month 00:23:54.23\00:23:56.20 and with smaller grocery runs in between. 00:23:56.23\00:23:59.83 So it's a very interesting. 00:23:59.87\00:24:01.70 You get back and you find out, 00:24:01.74\00:24:03.27 "Oh, no, they put the watermelon 00:24:03.30\00:24:05.21 on top of the guava 00:24:05.24\00:24:06.64 or the bananas and now they're smashed 00:24:06.68\00:24:08.31 all over after all that travelling." 00:24:08.34\00:24:11.78 This day is an example of a typical day 00:24:11.81\00:24:14.02 for the Adventist World Aviation 00:24:14.05\00:24:15.95 Missionaries in Guyana. 00:24:15.98\00:24:18.99 Every minute is filled with activity. 00:24:19.02\00:24:23.83 All this work was for the sole purpose 00:24:23.86\00:24:26.29 of sharing the love of Jesus Christ with people 00:24:26.33\00:24:31.07 who have never heard. 00:24:31.10\00:24:33.87 However, the team in Guyana 00:24:33.90\00:24:36.77 is greatly hindered by not having help, 00:24:36.81\00:24:41.48 the help that they have 00:24:41.51\00:24:42.84 so frequently counted on to student missionaries 00:24:42.88\00:24:48.02 who work right alongside the regular missionaries. 00:24:48.05\00:24:53.59 Why a student missionary 00:24:53.62\00:24:55.12 could have had a part in any aspect of today's work. 00:24:55.16\00:25:00.00 They could have helped 00:25:00.03\00:25:01.36 with the homeschooling of the children, 00:25:01.40\00:25:04.30 some of the plane maintenance, such as fueling the aircraft, 00:25:04.33\00:25:09.64 giving Bible studies. 00:25:09.67\00:25:12.44 They can help with medevac or even grocery shopping. 00:25:12.47\00:25:17.41 You see these jobs can be fulfilled by volunteers. 00:25:17.45\00:25:23.39 You know, my friends, 00:25:23.42\00:25:25.72 that the greatest progress in human history 00:25:25.75\00:25:30.16 has been made by willing volunteers. 00:25:30.19\00:25:34.30 Well, the opportunities for student missionaries 00:25:34.33\00:25:36.36 here are really, 00:25:36.40\00:25:38.30 I mean, I would say almost unlimited 00:25:38.33\00:25:40.00 on what they want to be able to do. 00:25:40.04\00:25:42.07 It all depends on the background of the SM 00:25:42.10\00:25:44.41 and what they're going to school for, 00:25:44.44\00:25:45.94 what they're trying to learn. 00:25:45.97\00:25:47.84 For medical students, there's tremendous opportunity 00:25:47.88\00:25:50.45 to go out on river trips where they go up the river 00:25:50.48\00:25:53.31 and, you know, handout, you know, 00:25:53.35\00:25:56.18 give blood pressure checks and blood sugar checks. 00:25:56.22\00:25:58.99 In some cases give vaccinations 00:25:59.02\00:26:01.39 working with the local ministry of health. 00:26:01.42\00:26:04.03 There's opportunity 00:26:04.06\00:26:05.39 to volunteer at clinics here in the region. 00:26:05.43\00:26:07.20 Now we have a great hospital 00:26:07.23\00:26:08.56 down here at the road well, 00:26:08.60\00:26:09.93 and it's a clinic and opportunity to see 00:26:09.96\00:26:11.83 a lot of unique things here that they don't see back home. 00:26:11.87\00:26:15.40 And there's opportunities for, 00:26:15.44\00:26:19.47 you know, getting involved in construction projects, 00:26:19.51\00:26:22.78 you know, working with local people 00:26:22.81\00:26:24.31 and ministry going out 00:26:24.35\00:26:25.68 and reading to those that can't read. 00:26:25.71\00:26:27.22 We had a lot of SMs doing that, 00:26:27.25\00:26:29.08 we have a lady down the street here that's blind. 00:26:29.12\00:26:31.02 They would go and read to and spend some time with. 00:26:31.05\00:26:36.89 There are really just a wide plethora 00:26:36.93\00:26:40.30 of opportunities depending on 00:26:40.33\00:26:41.70 what the student is trying to get out 00:26:41.73\00:26:43.06 of their SM experience. 00:26:43.10\00:26:44.70 We see such a need, everywhere we look there's, 00:26:44.73\00:26:47.24 it's almost overwhelming with all the needs 00:26:47.27\00:26:50.17 and all the opportunities, things are just ripe there. 00:26:50.21\00:26:54.48 And people coming to us 00:26:54.51\00:26:55.84 and just begging for us to come out 00:26:55.88\00:26:57.81 and do Bible studies with them. 00:26:57.85\00:26:59.28 And there's so many places, 00:26:59.31\00:27:02.22 different areas have asked us to come and do 00:27:02.25\00:27:04.09 Bible studies with them 00:27:04.12\00:27:05.45 or start churches in their areas. 00:27:05.49\00:27:06.96 We just do not have enough time to do it all. 00:27:06.99\00:27:09.52 And we would love to have more people come. 00:27:09.56\00:27:12.29 You don't have to be a pilot to be with AWA. 00:27:12.33\00:27:14.60 We need volunteers that will come 00:27:14.63\00:27:16.87 and commit themselves for a long term like, say, 00:27:16.90\00:27:19.53 three to five years even 00:27:19.57\00:27:22.27 because it's all about developing relationships 00:27:22.30\00:27:24.41 with the people here. 00:27:24.44\00:27:25.87 And there's just, it breaks our hearts to see 00:27:25.91\00:27:29.34 how many people really do want to know more. 00:27:29.38\00:27:32.98 And we just don't have the time to do it. 00:27:33.01\00:27:35.45 Having the airplane here has really opened the doors 00:27:35.48\00:27:38.25 and to the hearts and the minds of the people. 00:27:38.29\00:27:40.82 There's been times when I've flown people in 00:27:40.86\00:27:43.66 and they become more interested on to what we know. 00:27:43.69\00:27:47.80 And they've come to us 00:27:47.83\00:27:49.16 because of a direct response to a flight that we've done. 00:27:49.20\00:27:53.97 And just being here in the community 00:27:54.00\00:27:55.60 and people after a while knowing that 00:27:55.64\00:27:57.44 we are here 'cause we really do care about them 00:27:57.47\00:27:59.67 and we do want to help 00:27:59.71\00:28:01.11 and so because of that, 00:28:01.14\00:28:02.71 then the doors for evangelism have really opened. 00:28:02.74\00:28:05.88 It's a very busy time. 00:28:05.91\00:28:08.85 And it's almost getting to the point 00:28:08.88\00:28:10.22 where we can't handle anything more, 00:28:10.25\00:28:12.55 we can't do it anymore than we've done. 00:28:12.59\00:28:14.66 The project is ripe. 00:28:14.69\00:28:16.12 I can honestly say that in all the places 00:28:16.16\00:28:18.49 I've been in the world, 00:28:18.53\00:28:20.83 I cannot see a more ripe harvest 00:28:20.86\00:28:23.30 than exists in Guyana. 00:28:23.33\00:28:24.67 I've never seen anything like it. 00:28:24.70\00:28:26.30 People come to us, 00:28:26.33\00:28:28.54 entire village is asking us to come 00:28:28.57\00:28:30.24 and give Bible studies there. 00:28:30.27\00:28:32.61 We can't physically do it. 00:28:32.64\00:28:34.44 We don't have the time to do it because we're busy 00:28:34.48\00:28:36.95 doing all these other ministries 00:28:36.98\00:28:38.65 and flying airplanes. 00:28:38.68\00:28:40.68 So if I seem a little animated 00:28:40.72\00:28:43.55 and maybe a little bit heated about it, 00:28:43.59\00:28:45.82 I am because I know there's many people out there 00:28:45.85\00:28:49.42 that feel a call to work for God and then... 00:28:49.46\00:28:52.36 But then there's always the enemy there that saying, 00:28:52.39\00:28:54.40 "Well, you can't go because you have a house and you have, 00:28:54.43\00:28:57.07 you know, you have these responsibilities 00:28:57.10\00:28:58.97 and, you know, 00:28:59.00\00:29:00.34 you can't take your kids overseas," 00:29:00.37\00:29:01.70 and these kinds of things. 00:29:01.74\00:29:03.10 And so they never come. 00:29:03.14\00:29:04.81 And they never fulfill, perhaps, 00:29:04.84\00:29:07.04 what God really has planned for them. 00:29:07.08\00:29:09.34 And I think we need to step out in faith, 00:29:09.38\00:29:11.61 because God is more than able to take care of us, 00:29:11.65\00:29:14.42 provide for us, keep us safe. 00:29:14.45\00:29:16.65 If we're stepping out on His errand, 00:29:16.69\00:29:18.89 He's going to provide the way for it to happen. 00:29:18.92\00:29:20.99 We need to trust more and stop worrying about 00:29:21.02\00:29:23.96 all those things and let's get the work done 00:29:23.99\00:29:25.86 because Jesus is going to come. 00:29:25.89\00:29:28.26
