Adventist World Aviation 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 has a mission outpost in Guyana, South America, 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.70 servicing the northwestern part of the country 00:00:05.73\00:00:08.20 with Aviation Services, such as medivacs, 00:00:08.24\00:00:12.04 delivering supplies, and spreading the gospel. 00:00:12.07\00:00:15.78 This mission outpost has been in existence 00:00:15.81\00:00:18.05 for well over 10 years now and just thriving. 00:00:18.08\00:00:21.42 They use airplanes as a vital tool 00:00:21.45\00:00:23.95 to serve the local Guyanese people 00:00:23.99\00:00:26.45 and share the love of Jesus with them. 00:00:26.49\00:00:29.62 There is such a great need for emergency flights 00:00:29.66\00:00:32.46 from deep in the jungle that they need two aircrafts 00:00:32.49\00:00:35.66 to keep up with the flight request demands. 00:00:35.70\00:00:39.27 In Guyana, South America, 00:01:32.42\00:01:34.16 the Adventist World Aviation missionaries 00:01:34.19\00:01:36.29 run a busy aviation ministry. 00:01:36.32\00:01:39.63 But their project is not just about flying airplanes. 00:01:39.66\00:01:44.50 Oh yes, they use airplanes as tools to save lives. 00:01:44.53\00:01:50.17 But they're also interested in the daily life 00:01:50.21\00:01:52.77 of those in their communities. 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.78 They are interested in helping everyone 00:01:55.81\00:01:57.98 not just those with medical emergencies, 00:01:58.01\00:02:01.62 there are so many needs present around them that 00:02:01.65\00:02:04.65 the missionaries simply cannot ignore. 00:02:04.69\00:02:09.86 Well, the educational opportunities 00:02:09.89\00:02:11.43 here in Mabaruma for local children is, 00:02:11.46\00:02:14.13 I mean, I certainly would not mean to offer 00:02:14.16\00:02:17.50 any offense to the government here in any way. 00:02:17.53\00:02:19.50 But our viewpoint of what we've seen 00:02:19.53\00:02:21.00 of the education system, it's lacking. 00:02:21.04\00:02:23.37 I mean, it's really hard for children to get 00:02:23.41\00:02:26.74 a robust education of any kind. 00:02:26.78\00:02:28.81 Most of them, of course, don't stay in school. 00:02:28.84\00:02:30.68 Many of them just leave after about, 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.65 you know, maybe at about our eighth grade level or so. 00:02:32.68\00:02:36.45 They drop out of school, they figure, 00:02:36.48\00:02:38.09 well, we'll just go to work 00:02:38.12\00:02:39.45 and not bother with an education. 00:02:39.49\00:02:41.42 And unfortunately, I think a lot of them 00:02:41.46\00:02:42.79 have a lack of hope that 00:02:42.82\00:02:44.19 they could ever do anything more 00:02:44.23\00:02:45.56 with their lives 00:02:45.59\00:02:46.93 because they live in a very remote area here 00:02:46.96\00:02:48.80 and the only way they're going to really 00:02:48.83\00:02:50.17 ever get anywhere in life 00:02:50.20\00:02:51.53 is they have to go to Georgetown, 00:02:51.57\00:02:52.90 and the family in most cases 00:02:52.93\00:02:54.27 can't afford to really send them 00:02:54.30\00:02:55.64 not only to get a ticket to go to town, 00:02:55.67\00:02:57.14 but also to, for the education. 00:02:57.17\00:02:59.97 Although, actually, my understanding is that 00:03:00.01\00:03:03.01 the education as far as college in this country is free. 00:03:03.04\00:03:06.35 So I really don't know, 00:03:06.38\00:03:07.72 but I think a lot of them have a hard time 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.08 getting through school here. 00:03:09.12\00:03:10.45 When they aren't making a flight, 00:03:10.49\00:03:12.05 each of the missionaries busy themselves with projects. 00:03:12.09\00:03:15.56 They've started to help the local community. 00:03:15.59\00:03:18.93 They want to provide opportunities 00:03:18.96\00:03:20.93 for growth and a hope for better life. 00:03:20.96\00:03:25.47 Opportunities for employment in the jungle are very few. 00:03:25.50\00:03:29.27 Because of this, 00:03:29.30\00:03:30.64 many do not have enough money for food 00:03:30.67\00:03:33.74 or to send their children to school. 00:03:33.78\00:03:36.75 It's an oppressive cycle. 00:03:36.78\00:03:39.35 And AWA missionaries want to help 00:03:39.38\00:03:42.15 these people break out. 00:03:42.18\00:03:45.05 Unfortunately, even the local Guyanese children 00:03:45.09\00:03:47.72 don't get much in the way of a proper education. 00:03:47.76\00:03:50.96 The government has made efforts 00:03:50.99\00:03:52.59 to provide education to everyone at no costs. 00:03:52.63\00:03:56.30 However, family circumstances 00:03:56.33\00:03:58.93 and lack of enforcement leave a large percentage 00:03:58.97\00:04:02.57 of the children not attending school. 00:04:02.60\00:04:06.41 The education here in the school 00:04:06.44\00:04:08.28 and everything is free. 00:04:08.31\00:04:09.84 But sometimes you have to pay for the books and the, um... 00:04:09.88\00:04:15.38 Just like, so the cost for the uniforms and stuff 00:04:15.42\00:04:18.25 and most of them don't have money. 00:04:18.29\00:04:20.26 Some of my friends, they don't even go to school 00:04:20.29\00:04:23.12 because their mother and father, 00:04:23.16\00:04:26.70 they don't raise up money to get their uniforms 00:04:26.73\00:04:30.33 or tennis shoes to go to the school. 00:04:30.37\00:04:34.40 They just do nothing. 00:04:34.44\00:04:38.47 So the educational system here in Mabaruma, 00:04:38.51\00:04:41.34 basically the situation is that 00:04:41.38\00:04:43.14 you have a lot of kids in this community. 00:04:43.18\00:04:44.91 There's a lot of children running around here. 00:04:44.95\00:04:46.75 And average family is approximately 00:04:46.78\00:04:51.92 somewhere between six to eight kids. 00:04:51.95\00:04:55.09 And there's a lot of families in the area here 00:04:55.12\00:04:56.96 and it's always growing. 00:04:56.99\00:04:59.53 So you have a lot of children, 00:04:59.56\00:05:01.53 and unfortunately very few teachers 00:05:01.56\00:05:03.26 that are willing to work at the school here, 00:05:03.30\00:05:05.10 they're coming from Georgetown. 00:05:05.13\00:05:06.57 The ones that are willing to work, 00:05:06.60\00:05:07.94 a lot of times just graduate from the school here, 00:05:07.97\00:05:10.04 and they just make them teachers. 00:05:10.07\00:05:11.67 So they really have not had a formal educational training 00:05:11.71\00:05:14.74 that would qualify them to be your teachers. 00:05:14.78\00:05:17.18 And that's just the way it is out here and so... 00:05:17.21\00:05:22.62 So the other problem you have is that, 00:05:22.65\00:05:24.85 like in America, and some other countries 00:05:24.89\00:05:27.06 that are developed, 00:05:27.09\00:05:28.42 you have the parents encouraging the kids, 00:05:28.46\00:05:30.76 in fact, making the kids go to schools, 00:05:30.79\00:05:32.93 it's an important thing in their lives. 00:05:32.96\00:05:34.30 They have to be educated. Here it's not really like that. 00:05:34.33\00:05:37.03 If the child doesn't want to go to school, 00:05:37.07\00:05:38.43 the parents a lot of times will just say, 00:05:38.47\00:05:39.80 well, you should but they don't really, 00:05:39.83\00:05:41.64 you know, enforce that belief. 00:05:41.67\00:05:43.30 And so, a lot of the children just drop out. 00:05:43.34\00:05:45.81 They don't see it as a priority. 00:05:45.84\00:05:47.71 They haven't been taught that it's a priority. 00:05:47.74\00:05:49.98 And so, unfortunately you have a lot of kids, 00:05:50.01\00:05:52.81 you know, skipping school and a lot of truancy. 00:05:52.85\00:05:55.72 And so it makes it difficult. 00:05:55.75\00:05:58.09 And getting education here for the local people 00:05:58.12\00:06:00.86 is very, very difficult. 00:06:00.89\00:06:02.82 It's difficult for them to find teachers 00:06:02.86\00:06:04.49 who are qualified, 00:06:04.53\00:06:05.86 they're willing to come out here 00:06:05.89\00:06:07.23 and live in the... 00:06:07.26\00:06:08.60 They call the interior parts of the jungle. 00:06:08.63\00:06:10.70 And so, sometimes you'll have someone 00:06:10.73\00:06:12.60 who's just graduated from high school 00:06:12.63\00:06:14.07 and now they're teaching high school. 00:06:14.10\00:06:16.20 And so, we have children 00:06:16.24\00:06:18.87 who have gone through the system 00:06:18.91\00:06:20.31 and they come out completely illiterate, 00:06:20.34\00:06:22.71 it's very really difficult. 00:06:22.74\00:06:26.01 Sometimes you don't have the parental control there. 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.48 Their parents are off working or a lot of them drink. 00:06:28.52\00:06:32.65 And so, the children 00:06:32.69\00:06:34.02 if they don't want to go to school, 00:06:34.06\00:06:35.39 they don't go to school. 00:06:35.42\00:06:36.76 And so, even if the system's there, 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.13 there's no one enforcing them to go to school. 00:06:38.16\00:06:40.36 And so, you have a lot of illiteracy, 00:06:40.40\00:06:43.70 even within the school system. 00:06:43.73\00:06:45.97 This path leads many adolescents 00:06:46.00\00:06:48.10 to a life of theft and crime. 00:06:48.14\00:06:51.67 What a tragedy. 00:06:51.71\00:06:53.38 Sadly, the fact is that even those children 00:06:53.41\00:06:56.04 that do attend school often graduate 00:06:56.08\00:06:59.31 without basic reading and verbal skills. 00:06:59.35\00:07:02.85 The school systems are not equipped 00:07:02.88\00:07:05.39 or properly staffed 00:07:05.42\00:07:07.36 in the remote jungle communities. 00:07:07.39\00:07:10.33 Not many people want to be teachers 00:07:10.36\00:07:12.63 in these communities. 00:07:12.66\00:07:14.56 Often if a person goes through schooling to be a teacher, 00:07:14.60\00:07:18.93 they opt to stay in Georgetown where the pay is much higher. 00:07:18.97\00:07:23.10 And there are more supplies and materials. 00:07:23.14\00:07:25.97 It's difficult to get teachers 00:07:26.01\00:07:27.81 to stay in small jungle villages. 00:07:27.84\00:07:31.01 For the last seven years we've been here, 00:07:36.58\00:07:38.29 we've opened up our home to children. 00:07:38.32\00:07:41.19 We often sometimes 00:07:41.22\00:07:42.56 had as many as 8, 10, 12, 15 children at times 00:07:42.59\00:07:46.29 in the morning for breakfast. 00:07:46.33\00:07:47.96 They come by our house before they go to school. 00:07:48.00\00:07:50.27 And so, we've got to know them since they were very small 00:07:50.30\00:07:52.67 and now some of them have grown up to be teenagers. 00:07:52.70\00:07:55.80 And they are not encouraged by their parents. 00:07:55.84\00:07:58.71 In some cases, frankly, 00:07:58.74\00:08:00.28 the parents aren't even in the picture. 00:08:00.31\00:08:01.64 They're basically raising themselves, 00:08:01.68\00:08:03.71 and they decide to drop out of school, 00:08:03.75\00:08:05.58 but then they have no way to support themselves. 00:08:05.61\00:08:07.72 And in order to eat and take care 00:08:07.75\00:08:09.38 of some of their needs, 00:08:09.42\00:08:11.19 they end up resorting to crime and stealing, 00:08:11.22\00:08:12.99 breaking into homes and stores. 00:08:13.02\00:08:14.86 And we have a case of that, 00:08:14.89\00:08:16.22 a couple of boys that we raised... 00:08:16.26\00:08:18.23 I shouldn't say we raised, 00:08:18.26\00:08:19.59 but came to our house as young boys 00:08:19.63\00:08:21.30 have now turned a little bit 00:08:21.33\00:08:22.66 to crime to try and support themselves, 00:08:22.70\00:08:24.17 but they are not bad children. 00:08:24.20\00:08:26.20 And so, deep down inside actually both of them, 00:08:26.23\00:08:28.24 I think have a fair amount of intelligence 00:08:28.27\00:08:30.71 there that if fostered could really do something. 00:08:30.74\00:08:34.41 Dani and Micah are daily faced 00:08:34.44\00:08:37.21 with harsh realities that surround them. 00:08:37.25\00:08:40.55 They see the unfortunate circumstances 00:08:40.58\00:08:42.92 that come from broken homes. 00:08:42.95\00:08:45.52 Most of their friends come from poor family structures 00:08:45.55\00:08:49.29 and the LaBore children 00:08:49.32\00:08:50.66 see the pain that their friends endure. 00:08:50.69\00:08:55.10 Rather than becoming discouraged, 00:08:55.13\00:08:57.37 Dani and Micah do all they can to help their friends. 00:08:57.40\00:09:01.40 They want better lives for them 00:09:01.44\00:09:03.24 and they constantly share Jesus message of hope, 00:09:03.27\00:09:07.54 empathizing with their friends, and look for ways to help them. 00:09:07.58\00:09:11.91 Most of them have really hard lives 00:09:11.95\00:09:14.32 and some of them don't have enough food 00:09:14.35\00:09:15.98 to feed all their kids. 00:09:16.02\00:09:18.55 Some of my friends, they... 00:09:18.59\00:09:20.96 Some of them don't even have homes. 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.36 They just wander out. 00:09:23.39\00:09:25.36 And they don't even have mother or father. 00:09:25.39\00:09:29.93 They just hang out anywhere, wherever they go, 00:09:29.96\00:09:34.60 they are there. 00:09:34.64\00:09:37.57 They're just, they don't really have anything about the gospel. 00:09:37.61\00:09:42.68 Without an education, 00:09:42.71\00:09:44.18 Guyanese children are incredibly limited 00:09:44.21\00:09:46.41 to future work prospects. 00:09:46.45\00:09:48.82 Jobs in remote villages are scarce, 00:09:48.85\00:09:51.52 and their chances 00:09:51.55\00:09:52.89 of earning a living drastically decline 00:09:52.92\00:09:55.49 when they have no education. 00:09:55.52\00:09:57.99 Opportunities for work here is very, very slim. 00:09:58.03\00:10:02.23 Even people who do go to colleges 00:10:02.26\00:10:04.20 sometimes don't get work here locally, 00:10:04.23\00:10:07.80 but without education the chances are even slimmer. 00:10:07.84\00:10:11.51 The way people make money 00:10:11.54\00:10:12.87 here is mostly by maybe farming something, 00:10:12.91\00:10:16.14 you know, growing some vegetables 00:10:16.18\00:10:17.55 and trying to sell them at market, 00:10:17.58\00:10:19.18 maybe a little fishing. 00:10:19.21\00:10:21.62 Some people do work for the government 00:10:21.65\00:10:23.42 so as a secretary or some become nurses, 00:10:23.45\00:10:27.22 and there's you can become a doctor too. 00:10:27.26\00:10:29.39 But I think a lot of children here especially in our region 00:10:29.42\00:10:32.33 just don't grow up with the concept 00:10:32.36\00:10:34.13 of they can do some of these things. 00:10:34.16\00:10:36.03 No one asked them when they're little, 00:10:36.06\00:10:37.70 what do you want to be when you grow up? 00:10:37.73\00:10:39.40 And, so there's not that thought process of, 00:10:39.43\00:10:42.44 you know, I can be something better, 00:10:42.47\00:10:43.87 I can do something better. 00:10:43.91\00:10:45.57 [inaudible]. 00:10:45.61\00:10:47.41 What you want to be? 00:10:47.44\00:10:50.45 Well, you can't be pilot, or doctor, or pastor. 00:10:50.48\00:10:53.45 None of those things if you don't study 00:10:53.48\00:10:54.98 your maths and English, right? 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.39 You got to be in school. You study hard. 00:10:58.42\00:11:01.89 You're good, look like you're smart. 00:11:01.92\00:11:03.49 You look smart. Let me see. 00:11:03.53\00:11:05.99 Actually you're really smart. What about you? 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.90 Let me see. Wow! 00:11:07.93\00:11:09.36 You look really smart. And you're not even in school. 00:11:09.40\00:11:13.20 I know you could go to be a teacher, 00:11:13.23\00:11:15.47 you can come back and teach everyone. 00:11:15.50\00:11:17.14 Wouldn't that be cool? Yes. 00:11:17.17\00:11:19.17 With an education, if you had a trade, you know, 00:11:19.21\00:11:22.74 and skill, then you can do so much more 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.61 because you can come back. 00:11:25.65\00:11:27.18 If you can paint houses and do some carpentry, 00:11:27.22\00:11:30.52 you can help people build things, fix their cars. 00:11:30.55\00:11:34.79 Their chances of life are so much greater. 00:11:34.82\00:11:37.83 Yeah, the future of kids here, 00:11:37.86\00:11:39.36 if they don't get an education which most of them don't, 00:11:39.39\00:11:42.36 I mean, beyond a, you know, real basic level of education. 00:11:42.40\00:11:45.63 Really, for women, it's all about having children 00:11:45.67\00:11:48.30 and becoming mothers 00:11:48.34\00:11:49.67 and that's what happens at a very young age here. 00:11:49.70\00:11:52.77 Teenage pregnancy is rampant here. 00:11:52.81\00:11:54.58 So that's the typical scenario for a girl. 00:11:54.61\00:11:57.78 Boys, they'll go into the back jam and they'll do mining, 00:11:57.81\00:12:00.72 which is a very rough environment for kids. 00:12:00.75\00:12:03.69 There's a lot of drinking, prostitution. 00:12:03.72\00:12:06.76 You have, you know, working with strong chemicals 00:12:06.79\00:12:10.13 and harmful substances that basically 00:12:10.16\00:12:12.16 they're exposed to on a daily basis. 00:12:12.19\00:12:15.40 Some of them do a little construction 00:12:15.43\00:12:17.10 or they might do some agricultural work. 00:12:17.13\00:12:19.47 But their opportunities are very, very limited, 00:12:19.50\00:12:22.70 and most of them know that and that's why they lacked 00:12:22.74\00:12:25.91 the hope that really strives a person 00:12:25.94\00:12:29.54 to go on to learn more and become more educated. 00:12:29.58\00:12:32.75 Living in Guyana can be very difficult. 00:12:32.78\00:12:36.38 Creating a future for oneself is tough 00:12:36.42\00:12:39.45 when there aren't many opportunities. 00:12:39.49\00:12:42.49 Employment options are limited, 00:12:42.52\00:12:45.13 and this often causes people to lose hope, 00:12:45.16\00:12:48.23 and they don't strive to better themselves. 00:12:48.26\00:12:51.63 Even these young missionaries realize the harsh realities 00:12:51.67\00:12:55.60 that exist around them. 00:12:55.64\00:12:58.01 Their young hearts hope to find solution 00:12:58.04\00:13:01.18 to the difficult future that awaits 00:13:01.21\00:13:03.14 these Guyanese friends of theirs. 00:13:03.18\00:13:07.45 My friends need hope to get an education, 00:13:07.48\00:13:12.95 to get a job to learn about the gospel, 00:13:12.99\00:13:17.29 and so they so they don't have to break in, 00:13:17.33\00:13:21.80 steal to get food and or anything like that 00:13:21.83\00:13:26.23 and they can go to school. 00:13:26.27\00:13:28.77 Just it's hard without anybody here. 00:13:28.80\00:13:33.68 I wish they could have a better life 00:13:33.71\00:13:35.81 and they will get job, 00:13:35.84\00:13:39.08 so they could support their families. 00:13:39.11\00:13:42.02 My friends, they have the future, 00:13:42.05\00:13:44.59 if they don't go to school 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.82 that their life is in danger since they keep on 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.42 breaking the houses, breaking into stores stealing, 00:13:49.46\00:13:53.09 and it makes people mad. 00:13:53.13\00:13:55.23 So they're pretty much good as dead. 00:13:55.26\00:13:59.17 The AWA missionaries are saddened 00:13:59.20\00:14:01.40 by the lack of hope and the grim future 00:14:01.44\00:14:04.37 they see for these children in their villages. 00:14:04.41\00:14:07.81 Many of them can't reach beyond their circumstances 00:14:07.84\00:14:11.15 and make a better life for themselves. 00:14:11.18\00:14:14.02 But the AWA missionaries do not just sit idly by. 00:14:14.05\00:14:18.95 Instead, they reach out 00:14:18.99\00:14:21.69 and offer these children a better way, 00:14:21.72\00:14:24.93 a better future with Jesus. 00:14:24.96\00:14:29.73 Adventist World Aviation missionaries 00:14:44.38\00:14:47.25 are actively involved with saving lives, 00:14:47.28\00:14:50.39 both physically and for eternity. 00:14:50.42\00:14:53.72 Providing a future for students 00:14:53.76\00:14:56.19 and giving them an opportunity to make a life for themselves 00:14:56.22\00:14:59.83 falls into the type of work AWA does here in Guyana. 00:14:59.86\00:15:05.50 The missionaries have found 00:15:05.53\00:15:06.94 an Adventist school in Georgetown 00:15:06.97\00:15:09.34 that has agreed to accept a couple 00:15:09.37\00:15:11.87 of well deserving students into their program. 00:15:11.91\00:15:16.14 Jos-el is an Adventist Academy 00:15:16.18\00:15:18.75 that was started by Elizabeth Gonzales. 00:15:18.78\00:15:21.45 And she's a Guyanese American. 00:15:21.48\00:15:24.49 And she has funded the whole thing. 00:15:24.52\00:15:27.99 She really saw a need for Adventist education 00:15:28.02\00:15:30.49 and it's a really great opportunity. 00:15:30.53\00:15:33.09 We have a couple children here from Region 1, 00:15:33.13\00:15:35.50 they're now attending the school 00:15:35.53\00:15:37.60 and we're very excited because they graduated 00:15:37.63\00:15:40.87 from the system here the interior, 00:15:40.90\00:15:42.47 but they still did really poor on their tests. 00:15:42.50\00:15:45.44 And it will be like are our, 00:15:45.47\00:15:48.41 the American SAT scores were still low. 00:15:48.44\00:15:51.28 And so, now they're going to repeat 00:15:51.31\00:15:52.71 one of the years 00:15:52.75\00:15:54.08 at this Adventist Academy in the city. 00:15:54.12\00:15:56.69 And we're hoping that their scores will come up 00:15:56.72\00:15:58.95 so then they can better get into college courses. 00:15:58.99\00:16:02.46 Chrystal Van Fossen has lived and worked in Guyana 00:16:02.49\00:16:06.09 for three years now. 00:16:06.13\00:16:08.16 She spent all her free time, tutoring 00:16:08.20\00:16:11.67 and reading to Guyanese children. 00:16:11.70\00:16:14.94 She was instrumental in helping two students, 00:16:14.97\00:16:18.17 Kim and Rich 00:16:18.21\00:16:20.01 get into the secondary school in Georgetown. 00:16:20.04\00:16:23.24 Kim lives below us. 00:16:23.28\00:16:25.18 And, so we've gotten to know her pretty well. 00:16:25.21\00:16:27.95 Kim has not had the opportunity to have textbooks. 00:16:27.98\00:16:33.36 So when you're in a class, 00:16:33.39\00:16:35.52 a lot of times you want to review 00:16:35.56\00:16:36.89 what the teacher said. 00:16:36.93\00:16:38.26 She has to write down everything 00:16:38.29\00:16:39.63 that the teacher says, 00:16:39.66\00:16:41.00 everything that is on chalkboard. 00:16:41.03\00:16:42.90 And then the teacher will assign reading assignments 00:16:42.93\00:16:45.37 or homework based on a workbook that she cannot afford to have. 00:16:45.40\00:16:48.70 And a lot of the textbooks you can't even get here. 00:16:48.74\00:16:52.04 You have to get them in Georgetown, 00:16:52.07\00:16:53.41 which means you need a Georgetown connection. 00:16:53.44\00:16:56.01 Someone in Georgetown 00:16:56.04\00:16:57.38 that can pick it up and send it to you. 00:16:57.41\00:17:00.78 So she had start coming 00:17:00.82\00:17:03.45 to the Thomas Hill meetings 00:17:03.49\00:17:07.72 that we were having. 00:17:07.76\00:17:09.19 For the last two years, she was one of the first ones 00:17:09.22\00:17:11.39 that started attending down there, 00:17:11.43\00:17:13.70 and has been throughout the Bible studies and stuff. 00:17:13.73\00:17:16.93 And she had decided that 00:17:16.97\00:17:19.93 even though she was not doing as well in school 00:17:19.97\00:17:23.34 as what she wanted to do that 00:17:23.37\00:17:24.91 she was not going to go to extra classes on Saturday. 00:17:24.94\00:17:28.14 She decided that God was going to bless her 00:17:28.18\00:17:30.48 for not attending school, 00:17:30.51\00:17:31.85 and she would tell them, tell the kids at school, 00:17:31.88\00:17:35.08 you know, I'm not coming to class on Saturday, 00:17:35.12\00:17:36.89 and God's going to help me. 00:17:36.92\00:17:38.72 And so, we were really pleased with that expression of faith. 00:17:38.75\00:17:44.33 And she got her CXC, 00:17:44.36\00:17:47.36 which is the exit exam for high school here. 00:17:47.40\00:17:49.66 Results back about two weeks 00:17:49.70\00:17:51.93 after we returned from furlough, 00:17:51.97\00:17:54.20 and she was really disappointed in her results. 00:17:54.24\00:17:57.07 They were high enough that 00:17:57.11\00:17:58.44 she could get a job teaching on the river. 00:17:58.47\00:18:01.68 But they were not high enough that 00:18:01.71\00:18:03.04 she could get a job teaching here in Mabaruma. 00:18:03.08\00:18:06.01 And so, we talked to her about going to Bible training, 00:18:06.05\00:18:10.72 but that didn't give her any opportunity to earn money. 00:18:10.75\00:18:15.22 And she really need some way of supporting herself. 00:18:15.26\00:18:18.49 So we talked to her about going to Jos-el 00:18:18.53\00:18:20.76 which is an Adventist school in Georgetown. 00:18:20.80\00:18:23.40 And she was really excited about that possibility. 00:18:23.43\00:18:25.90 So I called Jos-el and talk to them 00:18:25.93\00:18:28.47 because she's a little older, and they said that 00:18:28.50\00:18:30.31 they would be happy to take her. 00:18:30.34\00:18:32.47 And so, we made arrangements to take her and her mom. 00:18:32.51\00:18:36.38 And we went into Georgetown and I spent 10 days 00:18:36.41\00:18:38.95 with her getting her school supplies and clothes 00:18:38.98\00:18:41.75 and all the little things you need 00:18:41.78\00:18:43.12 when you're not living at home, and got her rolled in Jos-el. 00:18:43.15\00:18:47.79 And we've gotten her some tutoring, 00:18:47.82\00:18:49.99 extra tutoring classes 00:18:50.03\00:18:51.49 because she's coming from an area 00:18:51.53\00:18:53.56 where some of the subjects weren't even taught 00:18:53.60\00:18:56.97 to where there's a much higher standard. 00:18:57.00\00:18:59.97 And so, she's having to do some catch up, 00:19:00.00\00:19:02.00 but she's loving it. 00:19:02.04\00:19:03.64 And the teachers at Jos-el have been 00:19:03.67\00:19:05.61 able to help her get more interconnected 00:19:05.64\00:19:08.68 with the youth there in Georgetown 00:19:08.71\00:19:10.48 and the different churches there. 00:19:10.51\00:19:12.91 I'm happy to be here at Jos-el. 00:19:12.95\00:19:15.52 So I can finish and get good grades. 00:19:15.55\00:19:19.75 A teacher, I would like to be a teacher to help. 00:19:19.79\00:19:23.73 As in my region they need help, 00:19:23.76\00:19:27.66 especially at the primary level they need a lot of help. 00:19:27.70\00:19:32.33 Up there they hardly have teachers 00:19:32.37\00:19:35.70 and trained teachers. 00:19:35.74\00:19:37.07 So I want to finish school training and then teach, 00:19:37.11\00:19:41.24 so they can have a better education. 00:19:41.28\00:19:43.78 I'm very happy. I'm very happy. 00:19:43.81\00:19:47.65 I'm very thankful to the people 00:19:47.68\00:19:51.95 who has helped me be here. 00:19:51.99\00:19:53.32 Adventist World Aviation believes in being 00:19:56.36\00:19:58.83 a part of the long term solution 00:19:58.86\00:20:02.23 by helping Kim get a better education 00:20:02.26\00:20:05.13 and giving her the tools to become a teacher. 00:20:05.17\00:20:08.27 AWA is impacting not only her life, 00:20:08.30\00:20:11.81 but also the lives of her future students. 00:20:11.84\00:20:16.28 So helping Kim become a teacher in her small village 00:20:16.31\00:20:20.18 will hopefully impact the village 00:20:20.22\00:20:22.08 and bring about a great change. 00:20:22.12\00:20:24.52 By having a well educated and dedicated teacher, 00:20:24.55\00:20:28.06 while hundreds of lives can potentially be changed. 00:20:28.09\00:20:31.96 It all started with one student and one missionary 00:20:31.99\00:20:36.33 who saw great potential in her. 00:20:36.36\00:20:40.30 Rich is another student 00:20:40.34\00:20:41.97 that Chrystal has greatly helped. 00:20:42.00\00:20:43.91 Rich, he has also been down 00:20:43.94\00:20:47.81 in the youth department at Thomas Hill, 00:20:47.84\00:20:51.51 and that he was chosen to lead out 00:20:51.55\00:20:54.95 while we were on furlough, 00:20:54.98\00:20:56.72 so he was leading the youth while we were on furlough. 00:20:56.75\00:20:59.39 He found that to be quite a challenge 00:20:59.42\00:21:01.12 because he found his Bible knowledge was not... 00:21:01.16\00:21:04.83 He wasn't comfortable with teaching. 00:21:04.86\00:21:06.76 He wanted to do more learning. 00:21:06.80\00:21:08.56 But he did a satisfactory job at doing that. 00:21:08.60\00:21:12.47 And he was a little frustrated because he has planned A 00:21:12.50\00:21:17.97 where he wants to be a pilot, 00:21:18.01\00:21:19.47 but that costs like 2 million Guyanese 00:21:19.51\00:21:21.61 and he does not have that. 00:21:21.64\00:21:23.04 So his plan B was to do medicine. 00:21:23.08\00:21:25.88 But the secondary school 00:21:25.91\00:21:27.25 here doesn't offer chemistry or physics. 00:21:27.28\00:21:29.98 And because of Josh's tutoring and Brendan's tutoring, 00:21:30.02\00:21:33.59 and Brian Solder Bloom, he was from two years ago, 00:21:33.62\00:21:39.36 tutoring in math. 00:21:39.39\00:21:41.06 So that would help him get into medical school, 00:21:41.10\00:21:43.97 but he didn't have any of the physics and chemistry. 00:21:44.00\00:21:48.67 So I called Jos-el which is an Adventist school 00:21:48.70\00:21:51.91 up in Georgetown to see 00:21:51.94\00:21:53.41 if they offered chemistry and physics and they did. 00:21:53.44\00:21:56.01 So we talked to his mom, and she thought that 00:21:56.04\00:22:01.52 it would be a really good experience for him. 00:22:01.55\00:22:04.09 So we have, I took Ann and Rich on the boat. 00:22:04.12\00:22:08.96 We went to Georgetown. 00:22:08.99\00:22:10.33 We spent 10 days getting all the supplies that 00:22:10.36\00:22:12.13 we needed for that and found housing. 00:22:12.16\00:22:16.50 And now he's enrolled in at Jos-el, 00:22:16.53\00:22:20.77 and he's getting his chemistry and physics and he's loving it. 00:22:20.80\00:22:24.47 And the teachers 00:22:24.51\00:22:26.07 there have taken interest in him 00:22:26.11\00:22:28.01 and have gotten him connected 00:22:28.04\00:22:30.25 with the Pathfinder group at a local church 00:22:30.28\00:22:34.55 and have introduced him to a lot of the youth 00:22:34.58\00:22:37.95 so that he doesn't feel like 00:22:37.99\00:22:39.32 he's just attending some small little group 00:22:39.35\00:22:42.86 out in the jungle somewhere. 00:22:42.89\00:22:44.23 He's actually part of a bigger picture. 00:22:44.26\00:22:47.16 Well, I would really like to say that 00:22:47.20\00:22:48.76 I am really thankful for what they have done. 00:22:48.80\00:22:52.33 I will do my best to make everything out of it. 00:22:52.37\00:22:56.47 The Van Fossens have undoubtedly changed 00:22:56.50\00:22:59.37 the future of these two students. 00:22:59.41\00:23:02.48 They have given them the opportunity to rise 00:23:02.51\00:23:05.01 above their circumstances and achieve success. 00:23:05.05\00:23:09.32 That hope fuels both Kim and Rich, 00:23:09.35\00:23:12.32 and they're excited to take this opportunity 00:23:12.35\00:23:15.42 and in return spend their lives helping others. 00:23:15.46\00:23:20.26 They've been given the opportunity 00:23:20.30\00:23:22.30 to make something special of their lives, 00:23:22.33\00:23:26.00 and the opportunity to help hundreds 00:23:26.03\00:23:28.94 more gain an education 00:23:28.97\00:23:31.97 and find the love of Jesus. 00:23:32.01\00:23:36.14 You help people, 00:23:36.18\00:23:37.51 it doesn't really matter what age. 00:23:37.55\00:23:39.11 You always, it's always a very satisfying experience. 00:23:39.15\00:23:42.92 And Christ spent His entire earthly ministry 00:23:42.95\00:23:45.42 helping people and ministering 00:23:45.45\00:23:46.99 to whatever their current need was. 00:23:47.02\00:23:50.26 When, with Kim and Rich in particular, 00:23:50.29\00:23:54.30 they're young Christians. 00:23:54.33\00:23:56.33 They want to live a committed life to Christ 00:23:56.36\00:23:58.87 and we would like to give them the tools 00:23:58.90\00:24:00.47 where they can do that. 00:24:00.50\00:24:02.47 They also are willing 00:24:02.50\00:24:05.94 to do leadership roles 00:24:05.97\00:24:08.71 and to train them to do those roles more effectively. 00:24:08.74\00:24:13.21 I think it's really just a wise decision. 00:24:13.25\00:24:16.35 Each of those kids 00:24:16.38\00:24:18.89 has a sphere of influence that is, that is significant. 00:24:18.92\00:24:24.06 And as they change and people see them change, 00:24:24.09\00:24:29.06 it creates a ripple effect. 00:24:29.10\00:24:31.93 And when, say Kim, she gets a job. 00:24:31.97\00:24:37.91 She will send money back to her home. 00:24:37.94\00:24:41.44 Her parents will be able to help 00:24:41.48\00:24:45.15 her younger brothers and sisters go to school, 00:24:45.18\00:24:48.62 because they'll have more income. 00:24:48.65\00:24:49.98 As it is now, it's really hard for them 00:24:50.02\00:24:51.99 to come up with the money to buy shoes, 00:24:52.02\00:24:53.89 and backpacks, and bus fare, and all of that stuff. 00:24:53.92\00:24:58.33 So she will be helping her younger siblings 00:24:58.36\00:25:01.36 get an education. 00:25:01.40\00:25:02.73 When you have an education, it's easier to read your Bible 00:25:02.76\00:25:06.30 and understand what your Bible is saying. 00:25:06.33\00:25:08.94 And when you understand and read the Bible, 00:25:08.97\00:25:11.47 then that gives you your opportunity to make 00:25:11.51\00:25:13.41 a relationship with Christ. 00:25:13.44\00:25:15.48 And it's just such a basic 00:25:15.51\00:25:17.51 skill and desire that people can read their own Bibles, 00:25:21.65\00:25:26.62 not have to take what someone says, 00:25:26.65\00:25:30.66 but actually read it for themselves. 00:25:30.69\00:25:33.63 It will help them not to be deceived so easily. 00:25:33.66\00:25:37.37 And the impact that 00:25:37.40\00:25:40.30 they can have as Christians 00:25:40.34\00:25:44.44 and leaders is just immense. 00:25:44.47\00:25:47.78 We've already seen where they're starting 00:25:47.81\00:25:49.24 to do Bible studies with other people 00:25:49.28\00:25:51.31 of their own age group and minister to them, 00:25:51.35\00:25:55.35 and they're just new in the faith. 00:25:55.38\00:25:58.19
