Adventist World aviation has been working on restoring 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.00 the refurbishing of a Cessna 182 to send down to the 00:00:03.03\00:00:07.20 mission field of Guyana where it will be used to fly 00:00:07.24\00:00:10.17 med-evac patients from the remote jungles. 00:00:10.21\00:00:13.11 AWA has worked on this project for over a year 00:00:13.81\00:00:16.64 and it has finally come to completion. 00:00:16.68\00:00:18.91 The aircraft left the Wisconsin maintenance 00:00:19.21\00:00:21.62 facility and is in route to Guyana. 00:00:21.65\00:00:24.05 It encountered many weather obstacles along the way, 00:00:24.09\00:00:27.39 but thankfully, aircraft 8838 x- ray made it to Florida safely 00:00:27.42\00:00:32.13 Up until this point, the flight path has taken them over 00:00:32.83\00:00:36.10 farmland and rural terrain. 00:00:36.13\00:00:37.93 However, from this point on, the aircraft must leave 00:00:38.47\00:00:42.54 the safely of the United States and take flight over open water 00:00:42.57\00:00:47.41 on its journey to South America. 00:00:47.44\00:00:50.75 The journey for aircraft 8838 x- ray had been a tumultuous one 00:01:41.60\00:01:46.57 So far the trip had been plagued with bad weather 00:01:46.60\00:01:50.01 and the stop in Florida was no exception. 00:01:50.04\00:01:53.71 A hurricane developed in the Caribbean, right in the 00:01:54.01\00:01:58.41 flight path forcing them to postpone their trip until they 00:01:58.45\00:02:02.58 could see what direction the damaging storm takes. 00:02:02.62\00:02:06.19 Ray Young, the pilot, monitoring the weather day and night. 00:02:06.59\00:02:10.33 Hurricanes can be very unpredictable, so rather than 00:02:10.36\00:02:14.10 take any risks, the Young's bunker down in Florida, 00:02:14.13\00:02:17.93 till the storm passes. 00:02:17.97\00:02:20.14 I just felt like from the moment we took off and the weather 00:02:20.74\00:02:25.84 systems the way they were. We just seemed like we were 00:02:25.87\00:02:28.94 being chased by weather. 00:02:28.98\00:02:30.31 It felt like the devil was mad at us, that we were bringing 00:02:30.35\00:02:34.15 this aircraft down here. I can't explain it, I've only 00:02:34.18\00:02:37.35 been flying for 30 years, but I have never seen weather 00:02:37.39\00:02:41.22 systems and collisions and catastrophic weather like this. 00:02:41.26\00:02:46.33 That weather that we squeaked through, the next day 00:02:46.36\00:02:48.93 ripped up towns, behind us. Tore up trees, caused all kinds 00:02:48.96\00:02:52.30 of damage. People died. It was horrendous the storms 00:02:52.33\00:02:57.07 that we somehow were able to squeak through. 00:02:57.11\00:02:59.87 It's just unexplainable, other than God was holding back 00:03:01.01\00:03:04.78 the winds of tides, so that we could squeak through and get 00:03:04.81\00:03:08.58 this asset of His delivered, in a timely manner. 00:03:08.62\00:03:11.75 It seems like the weather has been chasing us all the way. 00:03:11.79\00:03:15.46 Giving us a really hard time, we barely snuck down 00:03:15.49\00:03:19.19 through here in the first two days. Made it to Florida. 00:03:19.23\00:03:21.96 We had two fronts closing in on us from both sides. 00:03:22.00\00:03:25.50 We just snuck through the middle 00:03:25.53\00:03:27.74 We've been stuck now for two days in Florida. 00:03:27.77\00:03:30.41 With a hurricane out front of us Category 3 sometimes category 4. 00:03:30.44\00:03:36.18 Now we have a cold front that's moving through Florida 00:03:36.21\00:03:39.81 colliding with that and creating quite a bit of cloud 00:03:39.85\00:03:43.45 and havoc for us. 00:03:43.49\00:03:44.82 We had to take two nice days off. Visit Florida a little bit. 00:03:44.85\00:03:49.52 But now it looks like the weather is starting to turn in 00:03:49.56\00:03:52.16 our favor and we have a little bit of tailwind and we are 00:03:52.19\00:03:55.03 headed off to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and from there 00:03:55.06\00:03:58.83 we'll launch another four and a half hour leg 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.04 to Turks and Caicos. 00:04:01.07\00:04:02.40 And that will be the end of our day. 00:04:02.44\00:04:04.17 The risk of flying a small single engine aircraft 00:04:04.21\00:04:07.81 in hurricane conditions is unthinkable. 00:04:07.84\00:04:10.78 They simply don't have any options, they must wait 00:04:10.81\00:04:15.28 the storm out. 00:04:15.32\00:04:16.99 With the hurricane of course they were reporting 00:04:17.29\00:04:19.45 130-140 mile an hour winds. 00:04:19.49\00:04:22.02 The direction it was traveling was parallel to our path. 00:04:22.06\00:04:26.09 So we were a little concerned for a few days there, 00:04:26.13\00:04:28.36 that it may slide into our path. 00:04:28.40\00:04:30.10 But of course a little plane like this just can't handle 00:04:30.13\00:04:32.60 130 mile/hour winds. 00:04:32.63\00:04:34.50 So we decided to err on the side of caution and safety and just 00:04:34.54\00:04:39.94 give the storm a chance to turn direction. Convince us 00:04:39.97\00:04:43.48 it has turned direction. And now we are good to go. 00:04:43.51\00:04:46.41 After 2 days, hurricane Gonzalos has dissipated 00:04:46.88\00:04:52.05 and the danger has passed. 00:04:52.09\00:04:54.22 Ray and Julie are eager to continue onward. 00:04:54.26\00:04:57.79 Before they take off again, Ray does a thorough 00:04:57.83\00:05:00.96 inspection of the plane. 00:05:01.00\00:05:02.33 He needs to make sure that there was no damage from 00:05:02.36\00:05:05.27 the bad weather, so he looks over every inch of the aircraft, 00:05:05.30\00:05:09.10 checking to see if there is any water in the fuel, and tests 00:05:09.14\00:05:14.18 every component. 00:05:14.21\00:05:15.71 Today they begin flying over the open water, so he needs 00:05:15.74\00:05:21.42 to make sure that this aircraft is 100% air worthy. 00:05:21.45\00:05:27.56 Well, just in case the storms that have gone through 00:05:27.96\00:05:31.23 caused any damage to the aircraft, or people that maybe 00:05:31.26\00:05:34.30 tempered with it. 00:05:34.33\00:05:35.66 Or sometimes vibration can start to have things to come undone 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.43 So before every flight we give it a good looking over. 00:05:39.47\00:05:43.04 Make sure everything is tight and secure. 00:05:43.07\00:05:45.87 After the plane passes inspection, Ray and Julie 00:05:45.91\00:05:49.04 take to the skies. 00:05:49.08\00:05:50.98 Ever so happy to be moving closer to Guyana. 00:05:51.01\00:05:54.58 It was absolutely necessary that they wait for the storm to pass, 00:05:54.62\00:05:58.55 no matter how eager they are to continue their journey south. 00:05:58.59\00:06:02.72 (Radio communication) 00:06:02.76\00:06:25.25 The skies over Florida are clear. A drastic difference 00:06:53.21\00:06:56.95 from the flying conditions thus far. 00:06:56.98\00:06:59.11 Even though Ray and Julie are both anxious to deliver 00:06:59.61\00:07:02.82 the plane in Guyana, neither one of them is excited about 00:07:02.85\00:07:06.65 traveling for hours over open water. 00:07:06.69\00:07:09.59 When flying over land, it's comforting for them to know, 00:07:10.43\00:07:13.46 that if anything goes wrong, they have a place to make 00:07:13.50\00:07:16.77 an emergency landing. 00:07:16.80\00:07:18.20 But traveling over open seas, does not offer them that luxury. 00:07:18.83\00:07:23.97 The young's take in the view of the last bit of land 00:07:24.27\00:07:27.91 they will see for a while. 00:07:27.94\00:07:29.28 After they leave Fort Lauderdale 00:07:29.41\00:07:31.71 it will be open seas travel. 00:07:31.75\00:07:35.18 Well, we landed after a short little hop, hour and a half. 00:07:47.66\00:07:52.53 The third leg. We landed in Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport 00:07:53.57\00:07:57.84 Fort Lauderdale's airport is the last stop they have 00:08:21.16\00:08:25.23 in the United states. 00:08:25.27\00:08:26.70 They have a few items to attend to here. First they must fuel up 00:08:26.90\00:08:31.14 and get every last drop of gas in that tank that they can. 00:08:31.17\00:08:35.21 Carrying extra fuel is an extra safety precaution they take, 00:08:35.61\00:08:41.05 especially when flying over open waters. 00:08:41.08\00:08:44.05 Next they must pick up a life raft and PFD's. 00:08:47.29\00:08:51.46 Should an emergency happen, and they have to abandon 00:08:51.49\00:08:55.13 the plane over open water, having these floatation 00:08:55.16\00:08:58.70 devises on board will save their lives. 00:08:58.73\00:09:02.17 Lastly, Ray needs to file a flight plan and do some 00:09:02.20\00:09:06.64 mandatory paper work 00:09:06.68\00:09:08.28 required for ferrying a plane internationally. 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.25 The folks there absolutely fabulous, professional help 00:09:11.28\00:09:16.58 give us what advice they could give us and helped us 00:09:16.62\00:09:19.69 with a little bit of the paperwork that we were 00:09:19.72\00:09:21.62 going to have to go through. 00:09:21.66\00:09:23.02 With these different islands and that you land at. 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.09 Paperwork seems to be the number one job. 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.63 So we had to put together an awful lot of paperwork. 00:09:28.66\00:09:33.84 make sure that we had it right. 00:09:33.87\00:09:35.67 So that it wouldn't be any hassles, or problems and can't 00:09:35.70\00:09:39.04 say enough good things about the FB over there. 00:09:39.07\00:09:42.18 Before they leave this airport, Ray and Julie go over their 00:09:42.58\00:09:45.71 emergency protocol, to make sure they are prepared 00:09:45.75\00:09:48.75 should an emergency arise. 00:09:48.78\00:09:51.22 So, exit procedure, should we have to ditch in the ocean 00:09:51.25\00:09:56.02 We have our life vests on, make sure you clear of the aircraft 00:09:56.06\00:09:59.79 before you pull the yellow string. 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.73 Back seat passenger gets out first. 00:10:03.03\00:10:05.03 Than the front seat passenger. 00:10:05.73\00:10:07.44 Pilot will bail out his side. He will have the survival kit 00:10:08.14\00:10:13.91 tied to the life raft. There is a black toggle handle 00:10:13.94\00:10:18.31 that you can pull on the side of the life raft, and it will 00:10:18.35\00:10:21.42 inflate the life raft. And the survival kit which is behind us 00:10:21.45\00:10:26.96 We will open the door just before we touch down to water 00:10:26.99\00:10:31.29 if that does happen and that's our procedure. 00:10:31.69\00:10:36.50 The Young's have finished up their business here 00:10:37.00\00:10:38.83 in Fort Lauderdale. 00:10:38.87\00:10:40.20 They load up the plane and begin their taxi to the runway. 00:10:40.50\00:10:44.07 I would like to taxi for departure to Turk St Caicos. 00:10:44.11\00:10:49.18 Soon enough, they are in the skies - soaring southbound. 00:11:02.59\00:11:07.03 Within minutes the Florida coast line drifts away behind them. 00:11:07.76\00:11:12.03 It's both, exciting and nerve racking at the same time. 00:11:12.07\00:11:17.34 It's a bit ominous, when you first leave the shore line and 00:11:18.71\00:11:22.24 you see it heading off behind you and there is nothing but 00:11:22.28\00:11:26.28 blue water in front of you and no land. 00:11:26.31\00:11:29.28 You have to definitely ask God for a little extra 00:11:29.32\00:11:34.26 guidance and protection, because it's definitely 00:11:34.29\00:11:38.86 from then on in it was very critical that everything 00:11:38.89\00:11:42.16 works perfect on our aircraft. There was no backup plan 00:11:42.20\00:11:45.40 up there. You putting your life completely in God's hands. 00:11:45.43\00:11:47.97 What He chooses to do with you is what you have to accept 00:11:48.00\00:11:52.17 will happen. 00:11:52.21\00:11:53.54 The deep turquoise waters pass below them as 8838 x-ray 00:12:06.99\00:12:12.56 faithfully flies toward its next destination, Turks and Caicos. 00:12:12.59\00:12:18.27 This leg of the trip will take 4 hours to complete. 00:12:19.40\00:12:23.17 It appears that Ray and Julie waited the right amount of 00:12:23.81\00:12:27.14 time for the hurricane to pass. Thankfully, there is no sign 00:12:27.18\00:12:31.91 of turbulent weather ahead. 00:12:31.95\00:12:34.25 The skies are clear and the air is smooth. 00:12:34.28\00:12:36.92 Today they will have optimal flying conditions. 00:12:36.95\00:12:40.99 A luxury they have yet to experience on this trip. 00:12:41.02\00:12:45.46 Basically, these last 1, 2, 3, 4 legs, starting from Miami 00:12:45.76\00:12:53.97 There are several little islands with little runways and that 00:12:54.00\00:12:59.47 But as we progress, it gets more and more remote and fewer 00:12:59.51\00:13:04.78 and fewer islands in sight. 00:13:04.81\00:13:08.58 So basically we are flying a single engine aircraft 00:13:08.62\00:13:11.89 over open water and putting a lot of faith in the machinery, 00:13:11.92\00:13:17.69 that it's going to do its job and get us to 00:13:17.73\00:13:19.69 where we need to go. 00:13:19.73\00:13:21.06 Ray has full faith that this aircraft is safe and secure. 00:13:21.76\00:13:26.10 He has spent the last several months dedicated to working 00:13:26.13\00:13:29.60 on this aircraft himself. 00:13:29.64\00:13:31.51 He knows the ins and outs of this machine. 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.44 But despite his assurance, his pilot instincts say, to always 00:13:34.98\00:13:40.55 have a backup plan in these types of scenarios. 00:13:40.58\00:13:45.42 So when you are flying over open water, or in any 00:13:45.45\00:13:49.19 situation, as pilots we are trained for emergency 00:13:49.22\00:13:52.49 scenarios, we rehears them over and over and over again, 00:13:52.53\00:13:55.76 so that when the moment happens, you go into 00:13:55.80\00:13:58.60 autopilot mode. You know exactly what to do. 00:13:58.63\00:14:01.60 So that is how we train for open water emergency procedures. 00:14:01.64\00:14:06.37 Should we have to ditch the aircraft. 00:14:06.41\00:14:10.11 We want to know exactly what to do. And how to do it. 00:14:10.15\00:14:14.08 and not be... trying to figure it out at the last minute. 00:14:14.12\00:14:17.35 It gives you a good sense of calm. 00:14:17.39\00:14:19.85 Knowing that you know exactly what to do. 00:14:19.89\00:14:22.52 And it cuts down on the stress factor and the mistake factor. 00:14:22.56\00:14:29.00 As with the trip thus far, weather is always on Ray's mind. 00:14:29.50\00:14:33.67 He must keep an ever vigilant eye on the conditions 00:14:33.70\00:14:36.81 he is flying in, as well as those that are ahead of him 00:14:36.84\00:14:40.48 in his flight path. 00:14:40.51\00:14:41.84 With no land in sight, he cannot afford to run into any 00:14:42.41\00:14:46.01 type of bad weather. So he carefully monitors the winds, 00:14:46.05\00:14:50.32 the clouds and the weather reports. 00:14:50.35\00:14:54.06 And of course on a trip like this 00:14:54.09\00:14:56.52 the weather is probably our number one concern. 00:14:56.56\00:14:59.66 Having enough fuel to make some of these legs 00:14:59.69\00:15:03.43 the winds have to be just right for us, we are doing 4 hour legs 00:15:03.47\00:15:10.51 We have 6 hours of fuel if there is no wind, 00:15:10.54\00:15:14.51 but if we certainly ran into a little bit of a headwind, 00:15:14.54\00:15:17.38 There is just no airport to pull over and pick up some extra gas. 00:15:17.41\00:15:20.98 So we have to really be careful with our planning 00:15:21.02\00:15:25.59 and not overextend our selves. 00:15:25.62\00:15:27.92 Getting weather reports that are accurate through the Caribbean 00:15:28.56\00:15:33.13 is a little bit difficult. 00:15:33.16\00:15:36.06 And knowing that they aren't exactly accurate 00:15:36.10\00:15:40.50 So when you take off, you are hoping that their wind estimates 00:15:40.54\00:15:44.34 are going to be as accurate as possible. 00:15:44.37\00:15:46.98 But we are definitely taking some long legs. 00:15:47.01\00:15:50.58 of 3-4 hours across open water. Most average Cessna aircraft 00:15:50.61\00:15:57.09 are only packing 4 hours of fuel So you want to make sure you 00:15:57.12\00:16:00.62 don't runt into a large headwind or something that could exhaust 00:16:00.66\00:16:03.53 your fuel on board. 00:16:03.56\00:16:06.26 Because there just isn't any place to land and pick up more. 00:16:06.56\00:16:10.97 There is a lot of planning and preparation that goes into 00:16:11.00\00:16:13.74 making a trip like this. 00:16:13.77\00:16:15.20 One of the greatest things to consider is fuel consumption. 00:16:15.40\00:16:19.01 Cessna aircraft hold between 4-6 hours of fuel. 00:16:19.04\00:16:24.61 When planning this trip, they had to take into careful 00:16:24.65\00:16:28.28 consideration how far each island is from the other, 00:16:28.32\00:16:33.29 and what would happen if they couldn't reach 00:16:33.32\00:16:36.73 their next fuel stop. 00:16:36.76\00:16:38.43 So Ray must constantly monitor his gauges and be 00:16:39.26\00:16:43.16 careful to fly the plane in a way that optimizes fuel burn. 00:16:43.20\00:16:48.50 Well, you have to fly, even though you are flying VFR, 00:16:50.14\00:16:52.77 You have to fly a little more like you're flying IFR. 00:16:52.81\00:16:55.68 So you have to keep up your scan on your instruments 00:16:55.71\00:16:58.88 at times your horizon and that isn't as well defined, 00:16:58.91\00:17:02.98 as the clouds and ocean kind of blend together just a little bit 00:17:03.02\00:17:07.49 And of course every little noise when you're over open water, 00:17:07.52\00:17:10.96 sounds a lot lauder than it does when you are over land. 00:17:10.99\00:17:14.26 So every little rattle, every little hiccup in the motor, 00:17:14.56\00:17:17.87 every little pulse, You are very finely attuned to it. 00:17:17.90\00:17:22.37 Sometimes it can make you a little more nervous 00:17:22.40\00:17:26.54 than probably you need to be. 00:17:26.57\00:17:28.14 When ever the nerves start to get to you, you just 00:17:28.21\00:17:31.28 have to remember you're servant on God's watch. You are doing 00:17:31.31\00:17:36.55 this not for your own pleasure. You are doing this 00:17:36.58\00:17:38.19 for His honor and glory. Just put your life 00:17:38.22\00:17:41.02 and your condition and the situation all in His hands. 00:17:41.06\00:17:44.29 And trust that He is going to see you through just fine 00:17:44.33\00:17:46.90 and He did! 00:17:46.93\00:17:48.26 Planning a long journey like this can be very difficult. 00:17:48.30\00:17:51.23 Their ability to fly is very much weather dependent. 00:17:51.63\00:17:55.57 In the Caribbean, the weather reporting is not as accurate 00:17:56.00\00:17:59.87 as it is here in North America. 00:17:59.91\00:18:01.91 Ray can only look ahead a few hours to see 00:18:01.94\00:18:05.31 what weather lies ahead of them. 00:18:05.35\00:18:06.98 This can be very dangerous when flying a small 00:18:07.02\00:18:10.25 single engine aircraft over open waters. 00:18:10.29\00:18:13.82 If a storm system catches them, or if they have a strong wind, 00:18:13.86\00:18:18.66 there is nowhere that they can make an emergency landing. 00:18:18.69\00:18:22.76 They must trust souly that God is in control and that 00:18:23.37\00:18:28.67 HE will protect them and guide their path, as HE has done 00:18:28.70\00:18:33.88 so far on this journey. 00:18:33.91\00:18:35.34 Ray and Julie's nerves are eased and they settle into the flight. 00:18:36.75\00:18:41.45 They are both mentally prepared for this, and they know 00:18:41.48\00:18:44.35 that God is with them to protect them. 00:18:44.39\00:18:47.16 They have been blessed with fantastic flying weather today, 00:18:47.19\00:18:51.09 so they sit back and enjoy the pleasant ride. 00:18:51.89\00:18:54.73 They are both happy to be making this journey together 00:18:54.93\00:18:58.67 as husband and wife. 00:18:58.70\00:19:01.44 After a couple of hours, they are nearing the islands 00:19:14.48\00:19:16.82 of Turks and Caicos. 00:19:16.85\00:19:19.42 Although today's flight has been without difficulty, 00:19:19.45\00:19:22.22 it's always reassuring to see land on the horizon. 00:19:22.26\00:19:25.63 However, the sun is sinking lower and lower in the sky. 00:19:26.63\00:19:29.66 They must be on the ground by the time night falls. 00:19:30.37\00:19:33.50 It's not safe for them to fly after dark. They are up 00:19:33.54\00:19:37.94 against time to reach land while there is still daylight. 00:19:37.97\00:19:42.44 Smaller islands pass below them and they know that 00:19:42.84\00:19:46.18 they are getting close. Finally, after four hours of what 00:19:46.21\00:19:50.15 seemed like the longest flight, they can see the beacon lights 00:19:50.19\00:19:54.32 of the runway. 00:19:54.36\00:19:55.69 Just a few more moments and they will be on the ground 00:19:55.72\00:19:58.89 and will have completed another leg of this multi-day trip. 00:19:58.93\00:20:02.56 Ray eases the aircraft to the ground just in time as the sun 00:20:03.57\00:20:07.10 sets in the pink sky. 00:20:07.14\00:20:09.74 God has surely blessed them today with not only a safe, 00:20:09.77\00:20:14.01 but also a beautiful flight. 00:20:14.04\00:20:17.11 We landed just as the sun was setting, in Turks and Caicos. 00:20:17.15\00:20:20.92 By than we ran into a few health issues. 00:20:21.35\00:20:26.45 And of course it was Thursday night when we landed there. 00:20:26.49\00:20:31.36 Once we got through some of our physical issues, 00:20:31.39\00:20:36.16 We were running into the Sabbath And we decided to spent Sabbath 00:20:36.20\00:20:40.30 on Turks and Caicos and enjoy that to relax and rest up 00:20:40.34\00:20:46.68 because it had been pretty stressful up to that point. 00:20:46.71\00:20:49.58 And I think everybody just needed a quick little 00:20:49.74\00:20:52.25 rejuvenational brake and than we got ready again first thing 00:20:52.28\00:20:56.28 Sunday morning to launch on our next leg. 00:20:56.32\00:20:59.39 To the fact that these legs are 3 and a 1/2- 4 hours long 00:20:59.42\00:21:04.19 sometimes the altitude, the stress and everything 00:21:04.23\00:21:09.40 it just takes to get out and get going. It's a lot longer day 00:21:09.43\00:21:13.27 then just the 3 or 4 hours that you are flying. 00:21:13.30\00:21:16.10 With people on board, we had to keep our legs as short as we 00:21:18.14\00:21:22.44 possibly could and include extra rest stops, just so that 00:21:22.48\00:21:27.22 our bodies could kind of keep up catch up with the pace 00:21:27.25\00:21:30.55 of the change in altitude change in humidity, 00:21:30.59\00:21:34.06 Not being able to consume access amount of water, 00:21:34.09\00:21:37.56 spacing our meals, so that we wouldn't have any issues 00:21:37.59\00:21:41.33 while we were in flight tends to take its toll on the body 00:21:41.36\00:21:44.40 a lot more, than what was really anticipated or expected. 00:21:44.43\00:21:48.07 The stress of the grueling journey so far has caught up 00:21:48.60\00:21:51.67 with the Young's. As they reach their hotel in Turks and Caicos, 00:21:51.71\00:21:57.65 they are both physically and mentally exhausted. 00:21:57.68\00:22:00.95 And their bodies demand a break. To top it off, one of the outer 00:22:00.98\00:22:06.65 bands of hurricane Gonzalo, that they had just passed 00:22:06.69\00:22:10.46 through in the Caribbean, was bringing rain to the island. 00:22:10.49\00:22:14.56 The Young's have no choice, but to take a day of rest. 00:22:14.60\00:22:19.47 After about a week of flying, and being pushed to the max, 00:22:19.80\00:22:23.10 Ray is starting to mentally feel the pressure 00:22:23.14\00:22:25.77 that rests on his shoulders. 00:22:25.81\00:22:27.68 Of course as the only pilot, everything falls 00:22:27.71\00:22:30.25 on your shoulders. The stress of being on your game all the time. 00:22:30.28\00:22:37.29 was a lot harder as a single pilot, than it is when you can 00:22:37.32\00:22:40.66 share the workload with a fellow pilot. 00:22:40.69\00:22:43.06 As a single pilot, you also... fatigue is one issue 00:22:44.09\00:22:52.23 as a single pilot all the load falls on one person's shoulders. 00:22:52.27\00:22:57.01 Of course you can't go off and take a brake. 00:22:57.04\00:22:59.34 So the concentration factor is on full time for the whole trip 00:22:59.37\00:23:06.51 with no brakes. Also if you deal with, what we just dealt with, 00:23:06.55\00:23:11.75 yesterday - a few stomach issues and stuff like that 00:23:11.79\00:23:14.42 health is pretty critical. You can't just pass off to the 00:23:14.46\00:23:18.89 next leg to the next pilot who is feeling healthy. 00:23:18.93\00:23:21.16 You have to try and do your best to stay healthy and be able 00:23:21.20\00:23:24.63 to handle the stress load for each and every one of these legs 00:23:24.67\00:23:28.50 as a single pilot. 00:23:28.54\00:23:29.87 His top priority is to deliver this aircraft safely. 00:23:31.01\00:23:34.41 and with no, and I mean no damage. 00:23:34.44\00:23:39.11 He would rather have the trip take a bit longer then to put 00:23:39.15\00:23:43.35 his family and the aircraft in any type of danger. 00:23:43.39\00:23:46.86 Early Sunday morning, the Young's head to the airport 00:23:47.86\00:23:52.09 before day break. 00:23:52.13\00:23:53.46 As they drive to the airport Ray takes note of the skies. 00:23:53.50\00:23:57.07 It looks like a perfect day for flying. 00:23:57.10\00:24:01.47 He hopes to make it all the way to St Croix today. 00:24:01.50\00:24:05.64 This will be the 5th leg of the trip. 00:24:05.67\00:24:09.41 As the sun rises over the runway the skies light up 00:24:10.41\00:24:15.12 with vibrant colors. 00:24:15.15\00:24:16.55 It's almost as if God is making Himself known 00:24:16.58\00:24:19.99 and giving His blessing on today's flight. 00:24:20.52\00:24:24.06 8838 x-ray is loaded and ready to take off into the skies again 00:24:24.09\00:24:29.86 headed one step closer to her final destination, Guyana. 00:24:29.90\00:24:35.27 Plan for today. Well, we still have weather around us. 00:24:35.30\00:24:41.64 We are headed for Saint Croix. It's going to take us about 00:24:41.68\00:24:48.15 4 hours and 20 minutes with zero winds. 00:24:48.18\00:24:51.95 The wind seems to be light today 00:24:51.99\00:24:53.66 Yeah that's kind of the plan today is to get one more leg 00:24:56.42\00:24:59.33 and a little bit closer to our destination. 00:24:59.36\00:25:02.70 Our back up plan. Of course when you follow a flight plan here, 00:25:02.73\00:25:05.67 they want to have a backup airport, so Porto Rico. 00:25:05.70\00:25:08.24 We fly right over top of that on the way to Saint Croix. 00:25:08.27\00:25:11.11 So that will be our backup plan. If we can't get into Saint Croix 00:25:11.14\00:25:15.68 we'll go into Porto Rico. 00:25:15.71\00:25:17.45 OK, Ready for prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, 00:25:17.48\00:25:23.49 thank You for this opportunity to serve You! 00:25:23.52\00:25:25.22 I pray that You will be with us, watch over our flight, 00:25:25.25\00:25:27.36 give us safe arrival at our destination, keep bed weather 00:25:27.39\00:25:30.99 out of our way. Stop all other obstacles from happening 00:25:31.03\00:25:35.80 we pray in Jesus' name, Amen! Amen! 00:25:35.83\00:25:37.17 Tower, it's November 8838 x-ray. 00:25:43.00\00:25:45.11 The Young's make their journey through the rest of the islands 00:25:48.14\00:25:50.65 headed south through the Caribbean. 00:25:50.68\00:25:53.31 Next we land in Saint Croix. Deal with the customs issues, 00:25:56.72\00:26:03.16 and that we had there. And the FBO again there is very 00:26:03.19\00:26:07.56 very favorable to us and we have used them in the past. 00:26:07.60\00:26:12.23 They welcomed us with open arms. Took good care of us. 00:26:12.27\00:26:16.71 We had a restful night there. Then we loaded up again 00:26:19.71\00:26:24.55 with maximum amount of fuel. And headed off to St Vincent. 00:26:24.58\00:26:30.09 And then on to St Vincent with no problems or issues. 00:26:33.59\00:26:37.39 The weather, and the plane both seem to be co-operating 00:26:37.43\00:26:41.66 and the journey goes smoothly. 00:26:41.70\00:26:43.70 I am just glad that God picked me to serve in this manner. 00:26:43.73\00:26:50.51 It's a great honor, and a great blessing to be able to 00:26:50.54\00:26:54.68 participate Adventist World Aviation and to get these wings 00:26:54.71\00:26:59.18 that's been sitting idle for over 2 years, 00:26:59.21\00:27:01.35 back in the air again. As a mechanic and a pilot, 00:27:01.38\00:27:04.69 we have kind of a connection to an airplane, 00:27:04.72\00:27:09.36 almost like a person, it has a soul. 00:27:09.39\00:27:12.29 And they become a trusted friend 00:27:12.33\00:27:15.56 And we hate to see any of them sitting on the ground, 00:27:15.60\00:27:18.40 when they could be out there taking care of the business 00:27:18.43\00:27:21.64 that they were built for to do. 00:27:21.67\00:27:23.84 I am very very grateful to have this opportunity. 00:27:24.07\00:27:26.57 I thank God for choosing me! 00:27:26.61\00:27:29.31 Also one thing, you got to help people and 00:27:30.45\00:27:33.95 you got to prove to them that you care about them. 00:27:33.98\00:27:38.55 Doing the medical missionary type work like this 00:27:40.69\00:27:43.73 helps build the trust factor with people. 00:27:43.76\00:27:46.56 I think it is a great door opener. And we've seen 00:27:48.13\00:27:52.33 in Guyana, I am told in the last few months in that people 00:27:52.37\00:27:56.87 were actually coming to our missionaries doors, 00:27:56.91\00:27:59.77 saying, you people have the truth, after 7 years of you 00:27:59.81\00:28:04.08 being here we now want you to tell us. 00:28:04.11\00:28:06.15 So the missionary work in the aviation work is starting 00:28:06.85\00:28:11.62 to reap rewards and harvest for the Lord. 00:28:11.65\00:28:16.19 But it has taken a lot of time. 00:28:16.22\00:28:18.43 Lot of faith that it would pay off on the long run 00:28:18.46\00:28:23.06 and it appears though it is now starting to pay off quite well. 00:28:23.10\00:28:26.84 As they land in St Vincent, they are relieved to have 00:28:27.97\00:28:31.24 made it thus far. 00:28:31.27\00:28:32.74 This is the last Caribbean island they will be stopping on. 00:28:32.77\00:28:38.08 Tomorrow's journey will be the longest trip over open 00:28:38.11\00:28:41.38 water so far. 00:28:41.42\00:28:43.05 A 5 hour flight with nothing but blue seas. 00:28:43.45\00:28:48.66 This is the most dangerous part of the trip, but once they 00:28:48.69\00:28:52.86 cross the seas, their next stop will be mainland Guyana! 00:28:52.89\00:28:59.40
