Alaska, America's last frontier. 00:00:01.06\00:00:04.10 The land of vast beauty and endless miles of open wilderness 00:00:04.13\00:00:08.39 Airplanes are the life blood of Alaska. 00:00:08.42\00:00:11.97 Only aviation can connect communities, 00:00:12.00\00:00:14.93 where there are no roads with violent weather 00:00:14.96\00:00:17.61 and extreme terrains make this 00:00:17.64\00:00:20.27 the most dangerous skies in America. 00:00:20.30\00:00:23.21 Adventist World Aviation has two outpost positioned 00:00:23.24\00:00:27.45 in north and south Alaska. Hauling critical supplies, 00:00:27.48\00:00:30.87 rescue personnel, and the Gospel message to remote villages 00:00:30.90\00:00:35.30 all across the Alaskan region 00:00:35.33\00:00:38.07 Without aviation these Alaskan villages would be unreachable. 00:00:38.10\00:00:42.53 This is Adventist World Aviation OFF THE GRID 00:00:44.80\00:00:50.05 On today's episode of "Off The Grid" we venture 00:00:50.08\00:00:53.29 to the far corner of North America, to Kotzebue Alaska, 00:00:53.32\00:00:58.16 where AWA has an outpost run by Jim and Linda Kincaid. 00:00:58.19\00:01:03.06 Here above the article circle, Jim and Linda use 00:01:03.09\00:01:07.35 their talents of aviation to spread the gospel and minister 00:01:07.38\00:01:10.81 to the local Native American people in their region. 00:01:10.84\00:01:15.05 Many people might think, Alaska is not in need 00:01:15.08\00:01:18.95 of mission projects; but due to Alaska's unique climate, 00:01:18.98\00:01:23.66 landscape and overall size, mission aviation 00:01:23.69\00:01:28.11 is a necessary tool to spread God's Word. 00:01:28.14\00:01:31.08 The areas in the world where mission aviation is most 00:01:31.11\00:01:36.42 essential is in the areas of the world, that are not developed 00:01:36.45\00:01:41.74 with roads and infrastructure. Here in Alaska we are located 00:01:41.77\00:01:48.65 approximately 500 miles from the nearest end of the road system, 00:01:48.68\00:01:53.68 upon which you can travel to any place in north America. 00:01:53.71\00:01:58.81 So that's 500 miles of beautiful pristine but very remote country 00:01:58.84\00:02:07.18 There are approximately 225 native villages scattered 00:02:09.38\00:02:12.96 across Alaska, of which only about half a dozen are connected 00:02:12.99\00:02:17.96 to the road system, to the rest of the world, so to speak. 00:02:17.99\00:02:21.91 Aircrafts are absolutely essential to traveling to or 00:02:21.94\00:02:28.24 from these places and providing support. 00:02:28.27\00:02:32.69 The highway system and road infrastructure of Alaska 00:02:32.72\00:02:35.89 is limited to the eastern and southern portions of the state. 00:02:35.92\00:02:39.96 Most of Alaska cannot be driven to. 00:02:39.99\00:02:43.65 Most of Alaska is accessible only by airplane. 00:02:43.68\00:02:48.65 There is a road system that covers the large towns of 00:02:50.05\00:02:54.79 Anchorage, Fairbanks, and in between connected to the highway 00:02:54.82\00:03:00.37 that travels down to the lower 48, but the majority 00:03:00.40\00:03:03.41 of the state is able to get there only by flying. 00:03:03.44\00:03:08.47 So we felt like this was a skill that we could provide service 00:03:08.50\00:03:14.71 to allow people to get back and forth from their camps 00:03:14.74\00:03:17.78 and to their villages that there is no other way to get there. 00:03:17.81\00:03:21.46 For many people living in Alaska the conventional mode of 00:03:21.49\00:03:25.56 transportation is aviation. 00:03:25.59\00:03:28.54 Jim and Linda do not just provide aviation support 00:03:28.57\00:03:32.16 to the north western Alaskans; they offer so much more. 00:03:32.19\00:03:36.42 Both are involved in evangelism on a weekly basis. 00:03:36.45\00:03:40.32 Almost every Sabbath they hold church right next door 00:03:40.35\00:03:44.86 to their home in Kotzebue. They sing; preach the word; 00:03:44.89\00:03:49.87 and fellowship with their friends and neighbors. 00:03:49.90\00:03:52.40 After church is over, Jim and Linda's day 00:03:52.43\00:03:56.21 is only half way through. 00:03:56.24\00:03:58.14 After lunch, they immediately head to the airplane hanger. 00:03:58.17\00:04:01.63 On weekends several times a month we go to remote villages 00:04:01.67\00:04:09.58 and help hold worship services to support the Christians 00:04:09.61\00:04:14.45 who live there. 00:04:14.48\00:04:16.05 Many remote villages do not have any permanent pastors 00:04:16.08\00:04:20.14 or Bible workers. 00:04:20.17\00:04:21.68 The villages are so remote, that unless they have a missionary 00:04:21.71\00:04:25.90 living in the village, there is no Adventist presence at all. 00:04:25.93\00:04:30.12 Jim and Linda have made it their mission to have regular Sabbath 00:04:30.15\00:04:34.14 visits with a few of these villages that surround them. 00:04:34.17\00:04:37.67 We will continue to help the couple of out lying villages 00:04:37.70\00:04:43.51 that have missionaries in them and have church members, 00:04:43.54\00:04:46.77 so we will be going and meeting with those people 00:04:46.80\00:04:50.03 every month or so. 00:04:50.06\00:04:51.41 After they pack the plane with Bibles, a guitar, and a meal; 00:04:51.44\00:04:56.23 they take flight toward those in need of Christian companionship. 00:04:56.26\00:05:01.16 Today, the Kincaid's are flying to the village of Selawik. 00:05:01.96\00:05:06.49 There is a small Adventist congregation here and they 00:05:06.79\00:05:10.25 eagerly await the plane's arrival. 00:05:10.28\00:05:12.86 Rural Alaska is characterized by over 280 isolated villages 00:05:12.89\00:05:18.75 scattered across an area more than twice the size of Texas. 00:05:18.78\00:05:23.59 Nearly all villages are accessible by air and water only 00:05:23.62\00:05:28.50 making evangelism especially challenging. 00:05:28.53\00:05:31.47 The need for the gospel is very great in these remote villages, 00:05:31.50\00:05:35.77 and without aviation, it would be all but impossible. 00:05:35.80\00:05:40.24 There is no road between here and any other village. 00:05:40.27\00:05:44.94 Only trails, snow machine trails and airplanes. 00:05:44.97\00:05:50.79 Selawik is located at the mouth of the Selawik River, 00:05:51.01\00:05:54.51 about 70 miles southeast of Kotzebue. 00:05:54.54\00:05:58.19 There are 147 families residing in an area 00:05:58.22\00:06:02.14 of only 3.4 square miles. 00:06:02.17\00:06:04.95 About 1,000 people live here, yet there is no one here 00:06:05.65\00:06:09.91 to reach these people with the gospel message. 00:06:09.94\00:06:12.55 The village is completely isolated from 00:06:12.58\00:06:15.57 any other villages or cities. 00:06:15.60\00:06:18.55 Four wheelers are the conventional mode of 00:06:18.58\00:06:21.51 transportation here in Selawik. 00:06:21.54\00:06:23.57 Jim and Linda are picked up from the air strip and given a ride 00:06:24.01\00:06:27.67 to the church building. 00:06:27.70\00:06:29.33 They wined through the town on the wooden board walk made 00:06:30.14\00:06:33.73 especially for these ATV's. 00:06:33.76\00:06:36.46 Since the village is small, everyone sees Jim and Linda 00:06:36.49\00:06:40.97 as they make their way towards the church. 00:06:41.00\00:06:43.52 We have a little church here, Seventh-day Adventist 00:06:43.55\00:06:49.10 We don't have any pastor at this time, but every Sabbath 00:06:49.13\00:06:53.73 we try to meet in the church and spend some time there. 00:06:53.76\00:06:58.43 We read the Bible, or watch DVDs. 00:06:59.03\00:07:04.32 Jim and Linda hope to bring strength and encouragement 00:07:04.35\00:07:07.67 to the believers of Selawik. 00:07:07.70\00:07:09.45 The small congregation soaks up every minute 00:07:09.48\00:07:12.44 of Jim and Linda's visit. 00:07:12.47\00:07:14.16 They crave spiritual leadership and are always blessed 00:07:14.19\00:07:17.73 from the Kincaid's visit on Sabbath afternoons. 00:07:17.76\00:07:21.30 So we help to provide them a focus and a reason 00:07:21.48\00:07:28.07 to get together and to augment the worship service with music 00:07:28.10\00:07:32.87 and preaching. And praising God. 00:07:32.90\00:07:35.82 It is good, there is nobody to teach us and preach things 00:07:36.89\00:07:42.43 that we need to know. 00:07:42.46\00:07:44.98 We learn a lot of things from the pastor from the Bible. 00:07:46.92\00:07:52.99 ... that we'll be awake to what is happening and awake to the 00:07:53.02\00:07:59.82 spirit of Jesus in our hearts, so that we'll be ready when the 00:07:59.86\00:08:04.73 time comes. Amen, Amen 00:08:04.76\00:08:08.76 We appreciate it very much. I am glad they are coming more 00:08:08.79\00:08:12.95 often, not that we don't have anybody in the church. 00:08:12.98\00:08:16.44 It is real good for Jim and Linda to spend time with us, 00:08:16.47\00:08:21.02 that way we can be all closer to each other and deepen 00:08:21.05\00:08:26.53 our knowledge, to know more about Jesus and be closer 00:08:26.56\00:08:33.82 to Jesus every day because time is getting close. 00:08:33.85\00:08:37.11 As the Sabbath draws to an end, it's time for the Kincaid's 00:08:37.89\00:08:41.64 to return home. They had a very pleasant visit with the Selawik 00:08:41.67\00:08:46.03 congregation and had an opportunity to encourage 00:08:46.06\00:08:49.67 and spiritually rejuvenate these fellow believers. 00:08:49.70\00:08:53.34 This is kind of a weird place to live, if you look at the map 00:08:54.04\00:08:58.02 and we are way off in the far northwest corner and people 00:08:58.05\00:09:02.72 would say, why are you living up there? 00:09:02.75\00:09:05.57 I guess one of the reasons is... we lived in Alaska for 35 years 00:09:06.28\00:09:10.80 It was time for us to do something a little different 00:09:11.50\00:09:14.80 from what we had been doing we had a real love for Alaska. 00:09:14.83\00:09:18.93 Didn't want to leave, so we looked for a place that we knew 00:09:18.96\00:09:23.59 had needs that we could provide a skill that we had. 00:09:23.62\00:09:29.35 And yet, on the other hand, I don't feel like, 00:09:30.15\00:09:33.55 I am doing anything special out here. 00:09:33.58\00:09:35.63 I like the people and it's where we definitely feel 00:09:36.43\00:09:40.79 God has lead us to be. 00:09:40.82\00:09:42.63 So it is not something I view as look at me, 00:09:42.66\00:09:46.21 I'm up here doing this wonderful thing at this odd place. 00:09:46.24\00:09:49.30 It is just where God has placed us, we want to continue 00:09:49.33\00:09:52.33 to do the very best we can to serve Him here. 00:09:52.36\00:09:54.68 Jim and Linda feel blessed to be able to use their skills 00:09:55.96\00:09:59.66 in aviation to carry out the Lord's work in their region. 00:09:59.69\00:10:03.54 Although it makes for a long day, Jim and Linda feel 00:10:03.57\00:10:07.74 great fulfillment in the work they do. 00:10:07.77\00:10:10.71 Alaska is a vastly different area 00:10:17.43\00:10:19.31 from the rest of North America. 00:10:19.34\00:10:21.42 While it is considered part of the United States, 00:10:21.46\00:10:24.62 It still has many challenges and obstacles that make it unique 00:10:24.65\00:10:28.44 from the rest of the lower 48. 00:10:28.47\00:10:30.54 Because of it's enormous size, and vast wildness, 00:10:30.94\00:10:34.71 Alaska is often difficult to live in. 00:10:34.74\00:10:37.82 Villages are hard to reach; and therefore Alaskans' often go 00:10:38.22\00:10:42.22 without many of the comforts, that we take for granted. 00:10:42.25\00:10:46.02 Things like churches, pastors, news papers, 00:10:46.05\00:10:49.96 or even radio stations are a luxury in rural Alaska. 00:10:49.99\00:10:53.90 You know, we have all the technology, we have satellite 00:10:54.50\00:10:56.53 we have all of the stuff that North Americans have, 00:10:56.56\00:11:01.74 but we still have the logistics and the problems 00:11:01.77\00:11:06.42 and the challenges that you would face 00:11:06.45\00:11:08.98 in a third world country. And so because of that 00:11:09.01\00:11:12.81 the Adventist World Aviation is a very needed part. 00:11:12.84\00:11:17.50 In Alaska, only a few of the larger southern cities have 00:11:17.80\00:11:21.31 radio stations for people to listen to. 00:11:21.34\00:11:24.10 However, there is a project in Dillingham that is making 00:11:24.13\00:11:28.02 efforts to provide Christian Radio stations 00:11:28.05\00:11:31.12 to all remote and rural villages. 00:11:31.15\00:11:34.23 Warren Downs is one of the leaders in this movement 00:11:34.64\00:11:37.96 to spread the gospel message. 00:11:37.99\00:11:39.98 Adventist World Aviation partners have discovered that 00:11:40.01\00:11:43.94 flying in pastors isn't the only way to reach 00:11:43.97\00:11:47.32 remote villages in Alaska. 00:11:47.35\00:11:49.46 Village that was once unreached because of it's remote location, 00:11:49.49\00:11:53.81 can now be given the good news of the Gospel simply 00:11:53.84\00:11:57.02 by bringing Christian radio programming. 00:11:57.05\00:11:59.93 You've just seen me setting up a radio station kit for a 00:12:02.35\00:12:08.45 low power FM radio station. All we need now is 00:12:08.48\00:12:11.72 an extension cord to plug in and have power 00:12:11.75\00:12:14.71 and we can have a station operating. 00:12:14.74\00:12:17.16 Here is where the power supply goes in, here is where 00:12:17.19\00:12:21.54 the Ethernet for your internet connection goes in. 00:12:21.57\00:12:24.91 And here is where the antenna connects, or disconnects. 00:12:24.94\00:12:27.55 In the villages we are rather limited. There is an AM radio 00:12:31.01\00:12:36.42 station that is located right here in Dillingham 00:12:36.45\00:12:38.74 It's high enough power that it does reach the villages. 00:12:39.14\00:12:42.47 That's the only regular listening option. 00:12:42.67\00:12:45.95 There is nothing in Christian radio close by here. 00:12:45.98\00:12:50.30 Now if you go further east of here, there is a Christian radio 00:12:50.33\00:12:53.31 station in King Salmon and actually right here 00:12:53.34\00:12:57.06 in Dillingham there is a translator. 00:12:57.09\00:12:58.57 But out in the small villages, there really is nothing 00:12:58.60\00:13:01.73 out there. And so when we have been able to put 3ABN radio 00:13:01.76\00:13:06.12 in the small villages, and you have to understand, 00:13:06.15\00:13:09.10 these villages maybe sometimes half a mile deep, and maybe 00:13:09.13\00:13:14.62 at the most a mile long. I mean that's stretching it sometimes. 00:13:14.65\00:13:18.72 So we are not really talking a very large geographical area. 00:13:18.75\00:13:22.70 Beyond the perimeter of these villages there is nothing 00:13:22.73\00:13:26.54 out there, there is no houses, nothing, so we are talking about 00:13:26.57\00:13:29.88 a very small area, and a low power FM station seems to be 00:13:29.91\00:13:35.08 really the ideal means to put Christian radio 00:13:35.11\00:13:41.18 in the villages. 00:13:41.21\00:13:42.29 As you go out, into more bush villages, you don't have any 00:13:42.32\00:13:47.56 any other stations, maybe if you are lucky if you can pick up 00:13:47.59\00:13:50.75 an AM station in the middle of the night from Japan, 00:13:50.78\00:13:53.42 or somewhere around the world. So don't have a lot of selection 00:13:53.45\00:13:56.92 There certainly is a lot of negative media coming out. 00:13:59.82\00:14:03.75 If you do get a radio station, most likely it is 00:14:04.00\00:14:06.91 not a Christian one, that are available. 00:14:06.94\00:14:10.52 We want to provide something positive, that will help people 00:14:10.55\00:14:15.18 to understand the love of Christ for them, and have something 00:14:15.21\00:14:19.48 that will draw them away from the negative things that the 00:14:19.51\00:14:23.60 world with the devil has put out there to try to 00:14:23.64\00:14:26.28 lead people away from Christ. 00:14:26.31\00:14:28.36 I contacted Three Angels Broadcasting Network, 3ABN 00:14:28.40\00:14:33.10 Who was interested in helping us with this. They already have a 00:14:33.13\00:14:39.86 system that lets you stream 3ABN radio over the internet. 00:14:39.89\00:14:44.65 So it does work with internet and if you plug in the internet 00:14:44.68\00:14:50.28 Ethernet cable here into your router, it will connect 00:14:50.32\00:14:54.58 and go that route. But more recently we have been working 00:14:54.61\00:15:00.30 on a modification that will allow it to operate entirely 00:15:00.33\00:15:04.48 off line with a preloaded cache, basically. A small SD card, 00:15:04.51\00:15:12.77 like you stick in your camera. You can put a whole bunch of 00:15:12.80\00:15:16.62 media files on that. 00:15:16.65\00:15:17.93 We actually have two radio systems that are in operation 00:15:17.96\00:15:21.13 one is a stand alone system, that's the one 00:15:21.16\00:15:23.99 Linda is referring to. We also have another system 00:15:24.02\00:15:27.22 that is pre-recorded material. It randomly chooses and picks, 00:15:27.25\00:15:33.89 depending on the play list, whether it is sermons, or songs, 00:15:33.92\00:15:38.54 or stories, or that type of thing. 00:15:38.57\00:15:40.70 This is not the only project like this, there are other 00:15:40.73\00:15:46.48 efforts along the same lines. One of them in particular 00:15:46.51\00:15:51.82 has had feedback from a man, who was interested. 00:15:51.85\00:15:56.70 At first he listened to the radio and he was angry 00:15:56.73\00:16:01.32 about what he heard, because it went against what he understood 00:16:01.35\00:16:04.43 about the Sabbath, but he looked up the text in the Bible and 00:16:04.46\00:16:08.36 he found that it corresponded to the truth and he found 00:16:08.39\00:16:11.99 it matched the Bible. So he was challenged to study for himself. 00:16:12.02\00:16:18.24 He found that the radio was something that he enjoyed 00:16:18.75\00:16:22.82 and was inspired, and led to the truth by it. 00:16:22.85\00:16:25.95 I believe that could happen for many other people. 00:16:25.98\00:16:29.08 My vision for this, and I know it sounds far fetched, 00:16:29.11\00:16:31.48 but I would like to have one of these stations 00:16:31.51\00:16:33.61 in every village of Alaska. 00:16:33.64\00:16:35.60 Currently we've been saving about $500 a kit. 00:16:35.63\00:16:40.49 The cost is actually going down for making them as we figure out 00:16:40.52\00:16:44.29 technology and new technology keeps getting less expensive 00:16:44.32\00:16:48.16 and more powerful, but there is also the cost of deploying them, 00:16:48.19\00:16:53.69 and that is still an expense. Getting them out to the field 00:16:53.72\00:16:57.90 is probably... the airplane flight, which could run 00:16:57.93\00:17:03.74 couple of hundred dollars, so I think that the funding 00:17:03.77\00:17:06.76 will come when the timing is right, 00:17:06.79\00:17:09.75 when the people are there ready to host it. 00:17:09.78\00:17:12.52 I am sure God will make it possible. 00:17:12.55\00:17:15.23 So far we've had very positive response from the people. 00:17:15.35\00:17:21.18 Every time the radio station goes off the air they call us up 00:17:21.21\00:17:25.95 and they say, hey can you get this radio station back on 00:17:25.98\00:17:28.50 we really, really miss it. So we are really positively blessed 00:17:28.53\00:17:35.25 by the reports that are coming back from this. 00:17:35.28\00:17:39.23 Adventist World Aviation's goal is to help bring this project 00:17:39.61\00:17:44.17 to a reality. 00:17:44.20\00:17:45.74 By partnering with the radio project. AWA can help spread 00:17:45.77\00:17:51.21 the message of the gospel by bringing aviation support 00:17:51.24\00:17:54.87 and deliver these radios to the remote villages. 00:17:54.90\00:17:57.82 AWA's commitment is to provide air support to any radio 00:17:58.52\00:18:03.81 that needs to be transported and installed with this project. 00:18:04.32\00:18:08.91 One town that has been affected by the radio 00:18:08.94\00:18:11.80 is the town of Manokotak. 00:18:11.83\00:18:14.75 This village was given a radio to be hosted 00:18:14.78\00:18:17.63 in Edward and Rhonda's home. 00:18:17.66\00:18:21.02 It's been a blessing to have Adventist World Aviation come in 00:18:21.05\00:18:25.61 and bring new supplies, the Word and of course 00:18:25.64\00:18:33.92 Seventh-day Adventists. We are always blessed to have a pastor 00:18:33.95\00:18:41.66 from Dillingham come in, we wish we could have him more here. 00:18:41.69\00:18:48.99 There is no doubt about it, villagers long for 00:18:49.03\00:18:51.56 more frequent visits from their regional pastors. 00:18:51.59\00:18:54.37 However they are still appreciative and soak in 00:18:54.40\00:18:57.34 the programming they receive by way of Christian media. 00:18:57.37\00:19:01.32 There is a need for Adventism here. 00:19:01.35\00:19:04.15 Our family is the only Adventist family in Manokotak 00:19:05.36\00:19:09.33 Our dream is for people to find out more of the truth. 00:19:09.36\00:19:16.79 Because if they are not listening to you, 00:19:16.82\00:19:19.25 they are listening to them. 00:19:19.28\00:19:20.66 The radio station, it will probably talk to them. 00:19:20.69\00:19:28.54 Edward and Rhonda have made it a personal goal to share 00:19:30.34\00:19:33.97 this media with anyone in their village that will listen. 00:19:34.00\00:19:37.53 This radio project is a collaborative effort. 00:19:39.03\00:19:41.83 The radios are built, 00:19:41.86\00:19:43.62 but they must be deployed to the rural villages. 00:19:43.65\00:19:47.01 Not only that, they must also receive maintenance 00:19:47.04\00:19:50.80 about twice a year. This is only made possible with aviation 00:19:50.83\00:19:55.31 Today, we are going to fly with AWA partner, Eric to the village 00:19:55.34\00:20:00.56 of Koliganek to check on one of the radios 00:20:00.59\00:20:03.73 that was installed there. 00:20:03.76\00:20:05.05 I have a small airline Shannon's Air Taxi, that I started in 96. 00:20:06.38\00:20:12.69 Eric's business is a charter company, 00:20:13.51\00:20:15.91 but he also uses his business for ministry. 00:20:15.94\00:20:18.97 Whenever he has a trip to a village with a radio in it, 00:20:19.00\00:20:22.28 he offers to transport radios, or do the maintenance 00:20:22.31\00:20:25.71 while he is there. 00:20:25.74\00:20:26.90 I prayed to God, if got a Navaho I would use it, for business 00:20:27.60\00:20:33.01 and when ever I could, I would use it to help out. 00:20:33.04\00:20:36.80 in God's cause, where ever He needed it. 00:20:38.10\00:20:41.86 Eric has lived in Alaska all his life and therefore has a strong 00:20:42.20\00:20:46.71 passion to help the Native Americans whenever he can. 00:20:46.74\00:20:49.85 As Eric Loads up his plane, he heads towards Koliganek. 00:20:49.88\00:20:54.06 He travels down the run way with his plane 00:20:54.09\00:20:57.03 full of passengers and supplies. 00:20:57.06\00:20:59.19 Eric knows the value of aviation 00:20:59.22\00:21:02.42 To Alaskans, aviation isn't a luxury, but a necessity. 00:21:02.45\00:21:07.15 The journey between Dillingham and Koliganek, 00:21:07.75\00:21:10.96 is over flat arctic tundra. 00:21:11.00\00:21:14.20 There are no roads anywhere in sight. 00:21:14.23\00:21:17.06 Eric has been an intricate player in getting the radios 00:21:17.09\00:21:20.37 installed in Koliganek. 00:21:20.40\00:21:22.97 He too wants to help whenever he can and therefore 00:21:23.00\00:21:26.16 has been instrumental in this project. 00:21:26.19\00:21:28.19 About 56 miles north east of Dillingham pastor Downs asked 00:21:28.22\00:21:37.40 if we could put radio stations anywhere else, so I called 00:21:37.43\00:21:40.79 Koliganek, the people of Koliganek village and he said 00:21:40.82\00:21:46.05 that we could put one in the Counsel building, than we put it 00:21:46.08\00:21:49.63 up in an afternoon, and I switch out the computers when... 00:21:49.66\00:21:56.39 After so many months, I switch it out to a new hard drive. 00:21:58.99\00:22:04.75 Today, Eric is going to be doing some general maintenance 00:22:05.78\00:22:09.02 on the radio in Koliganek. 00:22:09.05\00:22:11.01 After he drops off his passengers, he will ride 00:22:11.04\00:22:14.07 into town and check on the radio that is located 00:22:14.10\00:22:17.51 in the community building. 00:22:17.54\00:22:19.28 Koliganek is a very small town of roughly 200 people 00:22:25.00\00:22:29.20 and 50 households. 00:22:29.23\00:22:31.07 They have no local TV, newspaper or radio stations here. 00:22:31.48\00:22:35.57 So having a Christian radio here is a very powerful tool. 00:22:35.60\00:22:40.75 The radio antenna is attached to the roof 00:22:40.78\00:22:42.70 of the Community Building in the center of town. 00:22:42.73\00:22:45.62 It's low power, it has six months of material on it. 00:22:46.97\00:22:52.99 It is a hard drive and it transmits basically 00:22:53.02\00:22:57.30 from one end of the village, to the other end. 00:22:57.33\00:22:58.86 This is the central part of the village. 00:22:58.89\00:23:00.85 It just plays on it's own, we put it on there, turn it on 00:23:00.88\00:23:04.66 and after... It is time to change it now. 00:23:04.69\00:23:09.49 And I just come switch out the computer. It only takes me 00:23:09.52\00:23:12.05 about 20 minutes, half an hour. 00:23:12.08\00:23:13.93 The radios are very low maintenance. 00:23:15.03\00:23:18.11 They are simple to set up and can be left to play on their own 00:23:18.14\00:23:22.01 for months at a time. The contents can be easily updated, 00:23:22.04\00:23:26.71 and requires very little work. 00:23:26.74\00:23:28.70 They are the perfect solution for these rural villages. 00:23:28.73\00:23:32.59 Eric looks over the radio system and checks all the connections. 00:23:33.39\00:23:37.06 He wants to make sure that everything is in order 00:23:37.09\00:23:39.74 and it is transmitting without any problems. 00:23:39.77\00:23:42.49 Radio Stations are a very simple solution for a very complex need 00:23:42.52\00:23:47.99 Everyone involved in the project 00:23:48.02\00:23:50.14 realizes the impact these radios have. 00:23:50.17\00:23:53.56 Whenever I want to switch it out I just have to shut this off, 00:23:53.59\00:23:56.68 unplug it, put the new one in, turn it on and, that's it 00:23:56.71\00:24:02.03 start playing. 00:24:02.06\00:24:04.01 A local village member expresses just how much he enjoys having 00:24:04.04\00:24:07.85 the radio here in the village. 00:24:07.88\00:24:09.35 Lot's of good variety, Story Hour, preaching, music, 00:24:09.38\00:24:16.55 Bible history, lot of good music there is even native music, 00:24:16.58\00:24:20.29 lot of good hymns. 00:24:21.39\00:24:23.09 Do you like having it here in the village? 00:24:24.03\00:24:26.05 Oh yeah, the only other station is AM650 in Anchorage and that 00:24:26.08\00:24:33.62 is the news, talk shows. That is real good and clear. 00:24:33.65\00:24:38.07 We don't have TV, no satellite, nothing, 00:24:38.10\00:24:43.39 so I am sure glad it is here. 00:24:43.42\00:24:46.51 Before leaving, Eric tunes the radio to listen and make sure 00:24:47.24\00:24:51.30 the signal is strong. The radio is working optimally, 00:24:51.33\00:24:55.61 and spreading the gospel to all those around. 00:24:55.64\00:24:58.68 AWA is very happy to help and be a part of this radio project. 00:24:58.71\00:25:04.02 Ultimately AWA's primary goal is to spread the gospel, 00:25:04.05\00:25:08.40 and these radios are the perfect tools 00:25:08.43\00:25:11.21 to accomplish this in rural Alaska. 00:25:11.24\00:25:14.61 Another Radio was installed in the village of Togiak 00:25:14.64\00:25:19.24 Togiak is 65 nautical miles from Dillingham. 00:25:19.27\00:25:23.81 Here, missionary Chad keeps a close eye on the radio. 00:25:23.84\00:25:27.52 The radio has become a helpful and beneficial tool 00:25:27.55\00:25:30.93 to Chad's ministry. 00:25:30.96\00:25:32.81 Chad can now reach people in church as well as in their homes 00:25:32.84\00:25:38.03 Well, what we have... We don't have radio stations like we have 00:25:38.06\00:25:43.90 down in the lower 48. Which pretty much the case 00:25:43.93\00:25:46.56 in the main body of the United States 00:25:46.59\00:25:48.16 We can't just flick a switch, or put on a preprogram, 00:25:48.20\00:25:53.01 regular station of K-Love or anything like that. 00:25:53.04\00:25:56.37 We actually have to install our own connections here 00:25:56.40\00:26:00.92 satellite or Am, FM transmitters here. That's what these are here 00:26:00.95\00:26:07.63 We have two stations, both are the same, 00:26:07.66\00:26:11.20 but if one channel is bad the other one will be clear, 00:26:11.23\00:26:15.97 that is why we have two here. 00:26:16.00\00:26:17.44 So to get to know more about the Adventist culture, 00:26:17.47\00:26:21.22 what we do, who we are as a denomination 00:26:21.25\00:26:26.23 they love getting to know that aspect through 3ABN. 00:26:26.26\00:26:30.63 That is what we use out here. 00:26:30.66\00:26:33.24 As a collaborative effort with those already working on this 00:26:33.27\00:26:37.85 radio project, Adventist World Aviation is excited about 00:26:37.88\00:26:42.37 delivering future radios to remote villages 00:26:42.40\00:26:44.87 all throughout Alaska. 00:26:44.90\00:26:46.60 There are 15 villages in our immediate area 00:26:46.63\00:26:49.47 that are serviced by the hospital in this hub village 00:26:49.50\00:26:52.93 of Dillingham. We would like to place radios in each one of 00:26:52.96\00:26:57.57 these villages, because it is a good way to reach out 00:26:57.60\00:27:02.61 in an area where we don't have a presence. 00:27:02.64\00:27:05.01 Currently there are only a handful of radios in place. 00:27:05.04\00:27:08.64 The dream and goal of the AWA partners, are to expand this 00:27:08.67\00:27:14.49 number to over 200 radios, one in every village. 00:27:14.52\00:27:20.13 We have great expectations, that this will become a real 00:27:21.03\00:27:25.08 blessing in this region anyway. 00:27:25.11\00:27:28.43 This is sort of a team effort it's no one person's 00:27:28.46\00:27:31.51 star of the show type of thing. It is a team effort and we 00:27:31.54\00:27:35.74 really do appreciate all the support that Adventist World 00:27:35.77\00:27:40.06 Aviation and the direction that they are able to give. 00:27:40.09\00:27:42.74 I see a need for Adventist World Aviation around Dillingham area, 00:27:42.77\00:27:46.16 Bristol Bay area, the rural area. There is no roads between 00:27:46.19\00:27:53.42 villages, there is no roads between anywhere except on water 00:27:53.45\00:27:58.55 So, yeah it's very much a need. 00:27:59.86\00:28:03.43 We really appreciate the work that AWA is doing. 00:28:03.46\00:28:06.76 Making this a possibility, making this a reality. 00:28:06.79\00:28:11.68 It has really enhanced our ministry in this area here. 00:28:11.71\00:28:15.06 What you have been watching is areas that 00:28:19.81\00:28:24.07 Adventist World Aviation goes into. We go into areas that 00:28:24.10\00:28:29.00 you can't reach by conventional means, whether it's in Guyana 00:28:29.03\00:28:32.39 whether it's in Alaska, whether it's in the Philippines. 00:28:32.42\00:28:34.72 We go into areas that can't be reached. 00:28:34.75\00:28:38.17 We reach the unreachable. 00:28:38.20\00:28:40.30 The average person doesn't recognize that there are 00:28:40.33\00:28:43.61 2 billion people in this world 00:28:43.64\00:28:45.70 that have never heard of Jesus Christ. 00:28:45.73\00:28:47.69 Of those 2 billion people 800 million of them can only be 00:28:47.72\00:28:52.11 reached by means like aviation. We are able to reach people that 00:28:52.14\00:28:55.82 would normally, under normal circumstances just not be able 00:28:55.85\00:28:59.17 to be reached. And as a result we are able to share 00:28:59.20\00:29:02.33 the love of Jesus Christ. 00:29:02.36\00:29:03.94 Pray for us! We need your prayers more than anything else. 00:29:03.97\00:29:06.39 For more information contact your local station. 00:29:06.42\00:29:09.54 Thanks for watching! 00:29:09.57\00:29:10.60 Ask about Adventist World Aviation! 00:29:10.63\00:29:14.17
