Well this is our project vehicle it's an Arctic Cat Prowler. 00:00:51.70\00:00:55.22 It was donated to the project when the Wickwires 00:00:55.25\00:00:58.35 came down in 2007. Or I guess it was 2008, 00:00:58.38\00:01:01.79 But, it served okay. We've used it to go back and forth between 00:01:01.82\00:01:07.50 the airstrip and transporting our volunteers to various 00:01:07.53\00:01:10.40 places, but, as you can see it's fairly small. It's actually only 00:01:10.43\00:01:13.10 a two seat-er but we've had as many as thirteen people 00:01:13.13\00:01:15.07 on this thing before. 00:01:15.10\00:01:16.94 The AWA team uses the arctic cat buggy as a work horse 00:01:16.98\00:01:20.13 in their operations. It's invaluable to them since 00:01:20.16\00:01:23.24 it's the only vehicle they have. They use it daily as they load 00:01:23.27\00:01:27.02 it beyond full capacity with people, cargo and supplies. 00:01:27.05\00:01:31.62 Well on our team, this is the only vehicle we have. 00:01:33.41\00:01:35.47 So we have, three families and one vehicle. 00:01:35.80\00:01:41.38 So its... we do our best to share it around as much as we 00:01:41.41\00:01:45.13 can. Basically we just use it when we have, when we need to 00:01:45.16\00:01:48.85 carry something, that's really what we're focused with. 00:01:48.88\00:01:51.10 And the motorcycles we use, just for the, getting around. 00:01:51.13\00:01:54.21 Each family has a dirt bike that they use for general errands. 00:01:54.24\00:01:57.48 However they have gotten very skilled and creative 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.17 with carrying loads on the bikes. 00:02:00.20\00:02:02.23 We use the bikes because they are so much cheaper to get 00:02:02.54\00:02:04.74 around then the vehicle, and are quicker. 00:02:04.77\00:02:06.63 So we use them to run to the market, to go to the airstrip, 00:02:06.66\00:02:09.70 we use them a lot. Just before we felt we were, 00:02:09.73\00:02:12.29 we knew we needed a vehicle down here, 00:02:12.32\00:02:13.96 we didn't know what would be best. 00:02:13.99\00:02:15.86 We'd buy here or something and I just happened to be looking 00:02:15.89\00:02:18.39 the classified and this type of vehicle had just, 00:02:18.42\00:02:20.36 they just started making them. And I had never even seen one 00:02:20.39\00:02:22.39 but I saw it in the ad and thought 00:02:22.42\00:02:23.79 "that would be pretty cool" 00:02:23.82\00:02:25.19 and the guy was asking, it was like a year old. 00:02:25.22\00:02:27.00 He was asking about twelve thousand or something for it. 00:02:28.00\00:02:30.26 Well I'll go look at it. And then I went and looked at it 00:02:32.57\00:02:35.27 and they... He was trying... It's kind of a funny story, 00:02:35.30\00:02:38.97 he was telling me how ... She opens up the front 00:02:39.00\00:02:41.37 and says "look! And you can fill all this up 00:02:41.40\00:02:42.77 with beer and ice, and you can drive around all day and 00:02:42.80\00:02:44.46 have a great time and he's got a stereo in it and everything. 00:02:44.49\00:02:46.53 And then he says " What are you going to use it for?" 00:02:46.56\00:02:47.93 And I told him we wanted to bring it down 00:02:47.96\00:02:49.33 for missions in Guyana; we're Adventists. 00:02:49.36\00:02:51.55 "Oh yah! I grew up Adventist" he says. 00:02:52.35\00:02:54.02 "I'll make you a good deal for it." It was still more money 00:02:54.05\00:02:57.74 then we - - we didn't have the money for it. 00:02:57.77\00:02:59.61 And I told a friend of mine about it. He'd been supporting 00:02:59.64\00:03:03.40 us and he said, "you know, you should go get that". 00:03:03.43\00:03:05.95 they paid for it of course, they picked it up, loaded it in the 00:03:06.96\00:03:10.15 container. and that was like two days before we left. 00:03:10.18\00:03:13.00 Every square inch of this vehicle is utilized 00:03:14.11\00:03:16.63 to transport people, materials, fuel, and cargo. 00:03:16.66\00:03:20.61 This is in essence their make shift pickup truck till they are 00:03:20.64\00:03:25.35 able to raise enough money to purchase a truck of their own. 00:03:25.38\00:03:28.08 The airstrip for our operation is about, 00:03:29.43\00:03:31.88 oh it's probably a ten minute walk from our house. 00:03:31.91\00:03:34.42 But whenever we fly we have to carry jerry cans of fuel. 00:03:35.16\00:03:38.52 We have to bring passengers out, we have to carry out cargo, 00:03:38.55\00:03:42.57 if they have suit cases and things like that. 00:03:42.60\00:03:44.26 Absolutely cannot be done without a vehicle. 00:03:44.29\00:03:46.98 If we don't have a vehicle, we have to do, we have to pay 00:03:47.68\00:03:50.10 somewhere between five and ten dollars every time we take 00:03:50.13\00:03:52.31 a trip out there, which adds up pretty quickly. 00:03:52.34\00:03:54.51 Considering we are flying almost every day here and sometimes 00:03:54.54\00:03:56.88 two flights a day. So without a vehicle it's very difficult 00:03:56.91\00:04:00.73 for us to even operate. We have to have a vehicle. 00:04:00.76\00:04:02.99 We are at that point now where it just has to be done. 00:04:03.02\00:04:05.31 But it's taxed. It's.. all the work that we've given it is way 00:04:05.34\00:04:08.38 beyond what it's meant to do. We've taken it to its limits. 00:04:08.41\00:04:12.04 And we desperately need a vehicle. A larger vehicle, 00:04:12.07\00:04:15.66 such as a Jeep or a 4x4 to transport our team 00:04:15.69\00:04:20.39 to varies places. 00:04:20.42\00:04:21.79 Our team is growing. We now have three families here. 00:04:21.82\00:04:23.72 And we can't transport everybody in the buggy all the time. 00:04:23.75\00:04:26.36 So we are just praying that we can find the funding in order to 00:04:26.39\00:04:30.03 be able to get a vehicle and bring it down here 00:04:30.06\00:04:32.36 to serve in this part of the Lord's vineyard. 00:04:32.39\00:04:34.99 One of the challenges the team faces here in the remote regions 00:04:35.02\00:04:38.80 of Guyana is the upkeep and maintenance of their vehicles. 00:04:38.83\00:04:42.21 They don't have any mechanics or repair shops in the area 00:04:42.24\00:04:45.87 that they can take their vehicles to. They can't even get 00:04:45.90\00:04:49.41 parts for the most part. So regular maintenance and 00:04:49.44\00:04:52.85 prevention is not an option but instead a demand. 00:04:52.88\00:04:56.89 The Arctic Cat is our pickup truck and this is our sports car 00:04:58.58\00:05:02.51 Some of the wear and tear in this vehicle is quite obvious 00:05:04.82\00:05:07.81 as you can see the roof is kind of falling apart here and 00:05:07.84\00:05:11.29 actually we have a new sun roof. And, basically it's 00:05:11.32\00:05:14.69 you know it's on it's last leg. 00:05:14.72\00:05:16.84 We just put a new engine in it, which is great, but so much 00:05:16.87\00:05:20.05 other stuff is wrong with it. I'm afraid it's not going to... 00:05:20.08\00:05:22.38 the engine is going to outlast the vehicle. 00:05:22.41\00:05:23.88 So it, it just really doesn't.... Oh! The other thing 00:05:23.91\00:05:28.24 is that in the last two weeks, it's broken down three times. 00:05:28.27\00:05:30.43 We've seen the breaks over heat on the thing. 00:05:30.46\00:05:32.67 The fuel pump went out. So that was down for a few days 00:05:32.70\00:05:36.91 because of that. Tires are completely bald in the front. 00:05:36.94\00:05:40.28 We can't just buy these tires down in Guyana. 00:05:40.31\00:05:42.88 We have to bring everything down from the States. 00:05:42.91\00:05:44.28 Parts for this vehicle are not available here in the country. 00:05:44.31\00:05:46.46 You know, so when the thing breaks down, if you can imagine 00:05:48.76\00:05:50.56 what it's like to be driving on a jungle road and suddenly 00:05:50.59\00:05:52.73 have it just stop working; it's a challenge. 00:05:52.76\00:05:56.17 We don't have tow trucks around here to tow it back. 00:05:56.20\00:05:58.33 We have to fix it on site. And it just presents a whole 00:05:58.36\00:06:02.21 series of challenges. So we're praying for a bigger vehicle. 00:06:02.24\00:06:04.25 Something that would be more appropriate for our work here. 00:06:04.28\00:06:06.48 So in order to preserve it, and make it last the team uses 00:06:06.51\00:06:10.38 the bikes as much as possible. 00:06:10.41\00:06:12.50 This helps the vehicle to last longer. Because it costs a lot 00:06:13.80\00:06:17.39 more to drive the Arctic Cat the tires and the maintenance. 00:06:17.42\00:06:20.20 We just had to put a new engine in it. And it's so much more 00:06:20.23\00:06:22.74 important to us, as far as accessing the airplanes, 00:06:22.77\00:06:25.36 when we do maintenance, for taking fuel out, 00:06:25.39\00:06:26.84 bring our supplies back. 00:06:26.87\00:06:28.36 So we don't have to pay someone else to do that. 00:06:28.39\00:06:30.18 We have a trailer that we pull out with the Arctic Cat to do 00:06:30.21\00:06:33.74 the service on the airplanes. And if we can't 00:06:33.77\00:06:35.39 pull the trailer out, it really handicaps our ability 00:06:35.42\00:06:37.95 to do the work on the planes... 00:06:37.98\00:06:39.35 Like the motorcycles are locally supported 00:06:41.10\00:06:42.87 so they are pretty inexpensive. 00:06:42.90\00:06:46.06 The Arctic Cat, we can get parts locally as well, what really 00:06:46.09\00:06:50.65 kills us, is time and shipping. If there is something critical 00:06:50.68\00:06:55.62 that we need, unless we have someone flying down 00:06:55.65\00:06:59.88 that can bring it with them we're looking at taking a month 00:06:59.91\00:07:03.94 or more to get something. And then when you do get 00:07:03.97\00:07:06.24 something, the cost of shipping and brokerage is just... 00:07:06.27\00:07:09.23 you know a part that cost one hundred dollars becomes two 00:07:09.26\00:07:12.18 hundred dollars. Or more. Depending on 00:07:12.21\00:07:13.89 how badly you need it. 00:07:13.92\00:07:15.29 We try and think ahead of what we need, and have someone 00:07:17.51\00:07:20.34 bring it down so it doesn't cost us so much. 00:07:20.37\00:07:22.30 Although their vehicles aren't the most high end or luxurious, 00:07:22.50\00:07:25.76 the missionaries are glad to have them. 00:07:25.79\00:07:28.38 Without these forms of transportation, they would be 00:07:28.88\00:07:31.80 extremely limited in the amount of work they could do 00:07:31.83\00:07:34.40 here in Guyana. 00:07:34.43\00:07:35.80 Transpiration is a very necessary tool 00:07:36.16\00:07:39.10 here in the remote region in Guyana. 00:07:39.13\00:07:41.61 While Jud fulfills his mechanic duties, the ladies are busy in 00:07:47.74\00:07:51.78 the kitchen at the VanFossen home. Here, Chandell, the local 00:07:51.81\00:07:55.90 Guyanese Bible worker, is teaching Chrystal how to cook 00:07:55.93\00:07:59.44 a Guyanese staple food, cookup. 00:07:59.47\00:08:02.07 Have you ever hurt your hand? No 00:08:02.10\00:08:04.52 We are going to make cook-up and we're going to make porridge. 00:08:08.29\00:08:11.31 Cook-up is rice and beans cooked in coconut milk. 00:08:11.34\00:08:15.62 And the coconut milk is not the water that is inside the coconut 00:08:15.65\00:08:19.99 It's from grating the coconut and then putting the coconut 00:08:20.02\00:08:23.61 in water and squeezing it, squeezing the water through 00:08:23.64\00:08:26.78 the coconut a couple of times. And then that's the coconut milk 00:08:26.81\00:08:30.66 that we'll use for cooking the rice in. 00:08:30.69\00:08:32.30 The two ladies are preparing food that they will be serving 00:08:33.20\00:08:36.52 at a health fair they are hosting. 00:08:36.55\00:08:38.40 Chrystal has only been in Guyana for 8 months, but she wants to 00:08:38.43\00:08:43.09 immerse herself in the culture, so she is having Chandelle teach 00:08:43.12\00:08:46.96 her everything she needs to know 00:08:46.99\00:08:48.43 So how does this work? 00:08:49.47\00:08:50.92 This is a little grater. It's not real fine. 00:08:51.42\00:08:56.52 And it's rather dull. And then you just put the coconut, 00:08:56.83\00:09:01.44 the bowl of the coconut over it... 00:09:01.47\00:09:04.00 Then you grate it out like that. 00:09:09.90\00:09:11.90 And see, it'll go really deep inside, 00:09:15.91\00:09:17.81 They're really really fast at this. 00:09:24.90\00:09:26.73 They call these dry coconuts. Because they don't use the water 00:09:28.06\00:09:31.77 If they want to drink coconut water, which is from the young 00:09:31.80\00:09:35.81 coconut, they call those wet coconuts. 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.98 Almost everybody grows their own. They grow wild too. 00:09:39.94\00:09:43.12 People can just go out in the jungle and find coconut. 00:09:44.08\00:09:46.79 They've got coconut trees in their back yard. 00:09:48.31\00:09:50.80 It's not totally done, but you can see how well it gets 00:09:52.99\00:09:55.13 in there and just gets it right out. 00:09:55.16\00:09:57.63 Chrystal wants to better relate to the locals 00:09:58.03\00:10:00.32 that she lives amongst. 00:10:00.35\00:10:01.87 She feels that if she adopts some of their traditional 00:10:01.90\00:10:04.67 daily ways of life, they will feel more comfortable 00:10:04.70\00:10:07.71 being around her. 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.11 She also wants to convey that she isn't here to change them, 00:10:09.14\00:10:12.34 but instead, to show them Jesus' love. 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.68 The dogs and stuff will even eat coconut. 00:10:15.71\00:10:18.80 They will split a coconut open and dogs will eat, 00:10:18.83\00:10:22.02 they get the rest, the inside. So will the ducks and the 00:10:22.05\00:10:24.94 chickens. That's how they supplement their diets. 00:10:24.97\00:10:27.96 Coconuts are a huge resource for the Guyanese. 00:10:29.83\00:10:32.26 They are quite readily available and inexpensive, so they 00:10:32.46\00:10:36.78 use them for a number of things. 00:10:36.81\00:10:38.40 Not only do the people eat them, but they also feed the coconut 00:10:38.90\00:10:42.79 to their animals. The cats and dogs have even 00:10:42.83\00:10:45.15 have learned to enjoy the coconut scraps. 00:10:45.18\00:10:47.94 The Guyanese can't afford to let any food go to waste, 00:10:47.97\00:10:51.09 so they make the most out of every morsel of food. 00:10:51.12\00:10:54.15 The Guyanese kitchens do not have all the luxuries that 00:10:54.55\00:10:57.89 one can find in North America. In fact, the Guyanese cook 00:10:57.92\00:11:01.21 over open flame so they have the kitchen area 00:11:01.24\00:11:04.02 outside of their homes. 00:11:04.05\00:11:05.52 This keeps the smoke from filling up their small houses. 00:11:05.55\00:11:08.98 Also when cooking, everything has to be done by hand. 00:11:10.09\00:11:12.93 They don't have electric mixers, blenders or graters. 00:11:12.96\00:11:16.74 So they must carefully handle their rustic cooking tools. 00:11:16.77\00:11:20.65 Chandel, do you ever cut yourself? Yah... 00:11:20.68\00:11:23.72 They eat cook-up for everything. 00:11:26.70\00:11:28.40 It's their main dish, that they eat like when they go out 00:11:30.24\00:11:32.76 for picnics, they would take that. 00:11:32.79\00:11:34.46 If you're having a birthday party, you eat cook-up. 00:11:34.76\00:11:37.34 If you have a funeral. A wedding 00:11:37.37\00:11:40.10 Sometimes for like a wedding, mostly they use 00:11:40.13\00:11:43.44 fried rice and chicken. 00:11:43.47\00:11:44.84 Church potluck, cook-up. 00:11:47.14\00:11:49.07 Lunch, cook-up. 00:11:52.37\00:11:54.42 It's just their dish. It's their favorite, favorite food. 00:11:57.05\00:12:00.23 Guyanese favorite food. 00:12:00.43\00:12:02.19 Kind of like bread to an American. 00:12:04.64\00:12:07.88 We have bread at most meals. Or something like that. 00:12:07.92\00:12:11.61 Chrystal and Chandelles' main reason for making cook-up today 00:12:12.82\00:12:16.26 is to alter the recipe and to recreate a healthier version 00:12:16.29\00:12:20.38 of the Guyanese's favorite dish. 00:12:20.41\00:12:23.36 These Guyanese tend to not have a lot of money to spend on 00:12:24.26\00:12:27.12 fresh vegetables, so their meals are often 00:12:27.15\00:12:29.85 unbalanced and un-nourishing. 00:12:29.88\00:12:32.05 The ladies want to educate the villagers about just how 00:12:32.97\00:12:36.81 important it is to have proper nourishment and fiber intake. 00:12:36.84\00:12:40.52 Just like in the States, the inexpensive food is fiber low, 00:12:40.82\00:12:44.15 like cassava. Like cassava bread and stuff. 00:12:45.21\00:12:48.70 It's harder to grow things here, even though you're 00:12:55.55\00:12:57.54 in the tropics, you're always fighting something. 00:12:57.57\00:13:00.46 You're fighting the insects, you're fight poor soil, 00:13:00.49\00:13:02.44 you're fighting the sun. 00:13:02.47\00:13:04.47 You're fighting the lack of water, or too much water. 00:13:04.50\00:13:07.49 So vegetables aren't as plentiful here. 00:13:07.52\00:13:11.37 And you can't just go to the grocery store and buy them. 00:13:11.40\00:13:13.93 They have market day twice a week. Saturday and Tuesday, 00:13:13.96\00:13:17.88 and if market doesn't have it, you're kind of out of luck, 00:13:17.91\00:13:21.79 unless you know someone in Georgetown 00:13:21.82\00:13:23.25 who can send it to you on a boat. 00:13:23.28\00:13:25.25 And the Guyanese don't make a lot of money, typically. 00:13:25.28\00:13:28.68 At least here in region one. A working man's wage, 00:13:29.28\00:13:34.70 if they can find work all day, is twenty thousand 00:13:34.73\00:13:40.42 or two thousand dollars, which is ten US dollars. 00:13:40.45\00:13:44.35 But you can't find work every day. 00:13:44.38\00:13:46.96 And so Guyanese family often needs about thirty thousand, 00:13:48.84\00:13:57.38 I have heard... - They feel pretty comfortable if they 00:13:57.41\00:14:01.76 can make between thirty and forty thousand dollars a month. 00:14:01.79\00:14:05.77 So it's a hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars a month. 00:14:05.80\00:14:09.32 So spending fifty cents or a dollar fifty for one meal 00:14:09.35\00:14:17.27 on vegetables is kind of expensive to them. 00:14:17.30\00:14:20.60 Their goal is to educate the natives on healthier ways to 00:14:20.63\00:14:24.04 prepare their foods; however, the ingredients they can use 00:14:24.07\00:14:27.82 are extremely limited. The average Guyanese family 00:14:27.85\00:14:31.68 doesn't have access to many things other than 00:14:31.71\00:14:34.75 the standard staple goods. 00:14:34.78\00:14:36.42 And spending any extra money of additional foods isn't a luxury 00:14:36.45\00:14:41.14 many of the natives can afford to do. 00:14:41.17\00:14:43.83 It's like a coconut flesh. Just taking out the milk from it 00:14:44.13\00:14:50.11 put it in water and just squeeze it out. 00:14:50.14\00:14:52.86 And get the coconut milk. 00:14:52.89\00:14:55.15 After the coconut is grated the ladies wash it out to make 00:14:55.18\00:14:58.57 the coconut milk. They fill the bowl with water 00:14:58.60\00:15:01.50 and coconut and mix it. Then they squeeze out the coconut 00:15:01.53\00:15:05.16 flesh leaving just the coconut milk. 00:15:05.19\00:15:08.02 They will use this milk to cook their rice. 00:15:08.05\00:15:10.73 Traditionally cook-up consists of coconut rice, a small handful 00:15:10.76\00:15:15.52 of peppers and onions and a cup or two of beans. 00:15:15.55\00:15:18.68 Today, Chrystal and Chandelle are tripling the fresh produce 00:15:19.38\00:15:23.68 and the beans to add some substance to the rice dish. 00:15:23.71\00:15:27.16 They don't want to change it too drastically however, they are 00:15:27.86\00:15:31.48 fearful that if it tastes too different, the Guyanese won't 00:15:31.51\00:15:34.52 like it, and wont adapt their our cook-up recipes. 00:15:34.55\00:15:37.77 So once again, they are very limited as to what and how much 00:15:37.80\00:15:42.30 they can alter the recipe. 00:15:42.33\00:15:44.05 Now that they have everything prepared, they can begin cooking 00:15:44.08\00:15:47.67 They again sift out the coconut milk with a strainer. 00:15:47.70\00:15:51.06 Just like everything else, cooking takes much longer 00:15:51.09\00:15:54.72 in third world conditions. 00:15:54.75\00:15:56.24 They don't need the flesh for this recipe but they don't just 00:15:56.27\00:16:00.07 discard it. They save it for the animals to eat. 00:16:00.10\00:16:02.68 We feed it to the chickens. 00:16:04.28\00:16:05.65 Once the milk is heated on the stove, 00:16:13.29\00:16:15.29 Chrystal mixes in the vegetables Once that begins to boil, 00:16:15.32\00:16:19.67 they mix in the rice and allow that to cook together. 00:16:19.70\00:16:22.88 Chrystal enjoys having this time to learn 00:16:23.88\00:16:26.57 and connect with Chandell. 00:16:26.60\00:16:28.28 Often the missionaries have such busy schedules that they don't 00:16:28.68\00:16:32.42 always have time to spend with each other. 00:16:32.47\00:16:34.62 So this morning is a nice treat for Chrystal and Chandelle 00:16:35.02\00:16:38.50 to learn and commune together. 00:16:38.53\00:16:40.67 As the food cooks, the ladies talk about the health fair 00:16:40.70\00:16:45.01 and they try to gage how many people they should cook for. 00:16:45.04\00:16:48.41 They want to have enough food for everyone who attends. 00:16:48.44\00:16:51.40 It's never easy to gage how many people might show up 00:16:51.43\00:16:55.18 to one of these events. But the ladies are being optimistic 00:16:55.21\00:16:59.04 and cooking enough for over one hundred people to eat. 00:16:59.07\00:17:02.31 I told her there is already more vegetables in that then 00:17:02.71\00:17:04.96 what I usually see in cook-up. 00:17:04.99\00:17:06.39 We're going to bless this food and we're going to ask God 00:17:14.46\00:17:17.97 to make up all the deficiencies that we don't have. And help 00:17:18.00\00:17:23.01 the people's taste buds to like whatever it is we've made. 00:17:23.04\00:17:31.59 You know last night, God and I were talking and I said 00:17:34.46\00:17:36.43 "You remember of the feeding of the five thousand story, 00:17:36.46\00:17:38.83 You know, where You satisfied people 00:17:38.86\00:17:42.22 with what they were used to?" 00:17:42.25\00:17:44.88 Rice and bread. Or bread and fish or whatever, we are trying 00:17:44.91\00:17:51.49 to do the same thing here. We are trying to teach people 00:17:51.52\00:17:54.40 how to use the foods that they... are used to. 00:17:54.43\00:18:00.82 I said "we might not do it so perfectly, but You can 00:18:00.85\00:18:04.66 make up the deficiencies." 00:18:04.69\00:18:06.69 Before Chrystal takes the cook-up to the health fair, 00:18:06.72\00:18:10.20 she first tests it out on her neighbors to see what they think 00:18:10.23\00:18:14.20 of the new and improved cook-up recipe. 00:18:14.23\00:18:16.30 We got this white woman that is to sure what she's doing. 00:18:16.33\00:18:19.05 So I need a Guyanese to tell me if it's any good. 00:18:19.08\00:18:21.81 Good. It needs salt? Not plenty. Little more. Little more salt? 00:18:26.37\00:18:31.27 What else? But this would work for me. This would work for you. 00:18:31.30\00:18:36.02 Yah. You can eat it. No. So the salt. It needs more salt? 00:18:36.05\00:18:40.06 No. Its good salt. Oh its good salt? Yah. Just this way? Yah. 00:18:40.09\00:18:43.82 I can feed this to the people in Barabeana? Yah. 00:18:43.85\00:18:46.27 And they won't spit it out? Yah. This good. This is good? Yah. 00:18:46.30\00:18:51.19 Ok. Thank you. 00:18:51.22\00:18:52.59 When I was in the States I had driven on some pretty rough 00:18:56.88\00:18:58.67 roads before, but when I came to Guyana I had my eyes opened to 00:18:58.70\00:19:01.31 what roads are really, how bad roads can really be. 00:19:01.34\00:19:03.74 In Mabaruma we go out sometimes as far as forty five minutes 00:19:03.77\00:19:07.02 to an hour away from Mabaruma. Some of the roads that we've 00:19:07.05\00:19:09.10 been on are...by American standards impassable. 00:19:09.13\00:19:12.67 We have to go on them though because we have to get to some 00:19:12.70\00:19:15.03 of these locations we are going to whether its church or medical 00:19:15.06\00:19:17.08 need or whatever the case may be And when it rains these roads 00:19:17.11\00:19:20.25 get rutted out, very badly. Some of these ruts literally are 00:19:20.28\00:19:23.39 sometimes that deep. And you have to figure out a way to get 00:19:23.42\00:19:26.42 around that in your vehicle. 00:19:26.45\00:19:27.82 Now that the Arctic Cat is running nicely again and all the 00:19:27.85\00:19:31.62 food is prepared the team packs everything up and begins their 00:19:31.65\00:19:35.33 trip to Barabeana. The team loads up every available spot 00:19:35.36\00:19:40.51 on the buggy. The roof, the side rails, the floor boards all are 00:19:40.54\00:19:45.63 loaded with supplies and people as they bounce down the road. 00:19:45.66\00:19:48.90 But even still, not everyone can fit on the buggy, so they 00:19:49.70\00:19:53.57 have to take a few of the dirt bikes out to Barabeana as well. 00:19:53.60\00:19:57.12 Barabeana is about probably a ten minute drive from Mabaruma. 00:19:57.15\00:20:02.55 The road is in kind of a bad shape right now, so you know, 00:20:02.58\00:20:05.99 it's not easy to get out here always. Cause when the tide 00:20:06.02\00:20:08.50 comes in the water goes over the roads. Sometimes it can get as 00:20:08.53\00:20:11.37 deep as a couple of feet to drive through, and a lot of 00:20:11.40\00:20:13.79 rocks and all that. So its a little bit of a challenge 00:20:13.82\00:20:15.35 getting out here sometimes but, so it's a little bit isolated in 00:20:15.38\00:20:19.17 that regard you know that it's not always easy to get to. 00:20:19.20\00:20:22.04 It should only be about a fifteen minute trip away, 00:20:22.07\00:20:24.75 however, with the roads in the condition that they are, 00:20:24.78\00:20:28.04 it's going to take them much longer than anticipated. 00:20:28.07\00:20:31.01 The rivers are all tidal waters in this area. 00:20:31.41\00:20:34.67 So as the tides rise, so do all the low lying flood areas. 00:20:34.70\00:20:39.75 This road to Bababeana happens to cross one of these areas. 00:20:39.78\00:20:44.20 But rather than let that stop the team, they push right 00:20:45.16\00:20:48.38 through the murky waters. They aren't going to let getting 00:20:48.41\00:20:51.58 a little muddy, stop them from holding this health fair. 00:20:51.61\00:20:54.86 So they just drive right through the high waters, 00:20:54.89\00:20:57.85 dirt bikes and all. 00:20:57.88\00:20:59.73 Unfortunately there isn't enough transportation for everyone. 00:21:09.08\00:21:11.92 As they reach the top of the hill they pass one of the fellow 00:21:11.95\00:21:15.77 missionaries Anica. She began her day very early and started 00:21:15.80\00:21:20.36 walking to Barabeana for the health fair. 00:21:20.39\00:21:22.34 It isn't an ideal situation, but the mission team is praying that 00:21:22.37\00:21:27.03 it's just temporary and they look forward to the day when 00:21:27.06\00:21:30.06 they can buy a full sized pickup that will be able 00:21:30.09\00:21:33.16 to transport everyone. As soon as they come to a stop, 00:21:33.19\00:21:36.99 people start appearing. It's as if they were waiting for them 00:21:37.02\00:21:40.67 to arrive. So the team quickly unloads and begins 00:21:40.70\00:21:44.40 the afternoon's festivities. 00:21:44.43\00:21:46.33 As the day goes on, more and more people come to 00:21:47.47\00:21:51.21 learn about their health. 00:21:51.24\00:21:52.61 We have a huge need for a vehicle, 00:21:55.37\00:21:57.88 specifically a 4x4 truck. 00:21:57.91\00:21:59.87 We've been managing here for years without it, but it's been 00:21:59.90\00:22:04.71 a huge hassle, as we've been using this little arctic cat 00:22:04.74\00:22:08.48 which we call the buggy and it says, if you look on the panel 00:22:08.51\00:22:12.60 it says maximum 2 people. But we actually have fit on like 13. 00:22:12.63\00:22:17.16 And there is cargo, and we are hanging off there. 00:22:17.19\00:22:20.66 What happens is when we fly back from Georgetown we land 00:22:20.69\00:22:23.74 and usually we have people and or cargo, 00:22:23.77\00:22:26.05 we are flying in our groceries. There is always medicines for 00:22:26.08\00:22:29.02 for the hospital or whatever. And so how are we going to get 00:22:29.05\00:22:31.59 them from the airstrip to our house. And so, we just pile 00:22:31.62\00:22:35.53 everything on to the buggy. As much as we can. 00:22:35.56\00:22:37.89 And motorcycles, I've learned how to, I can ride a motorcycle 00:22:37.92\00:22:41.26 now with a jerry can in between my legs and another on back here 00:22:41.29\00:22:44.46 And it's pretty amazing. So, we need a 4x4 truck. 00:22:44.49\00:22:49.01 The ideal vehicle for us here really would be a Toyota 4x4 00:22:49.04\00:22:52.15 of some kind. Toyota parts are readily available here in Guyana 00:22:52.18\00:22:54.89 And we've identified this need, so we worked with AWA to set up 00:22:54.92\00:23:00.03 an account specifically for a vehicle for Guyana. 00:23:00.06\00:23:02.28 We're here at Barabeana doing the health fair and it's just to 00:23:03.08\00:23:06.45 help the community become more aware of their health status. 00:23:06.48\00:23:09.50 We're specifically focusing on glucose and pressures. 00:23:09.53\00:23:12.31 I think we had some discussions quite some time ago actually 00:23:12.34\00:23:15.85 about just different creative ways to make in roads into this 00:23:15.88\00:23:18.70 community and we just felt that you know, it'd be good to have 00:23:18.73\00:23:22.52 a you know a session or a health fair so to speak to teach people 00:23:22.55\00:23:26.55 about health principles. And to give them tools to 00:23:26.58\00:23:29.44 help them live a better life. You know it's a good way to 00:23:29.47\00:23:32.92 introduce people to who we are, and Adventism as it is you know 00:23:32.95\00:23:37.08 we have a church that we built here so hopefully you know 00:23:37.11\00:23:40.42 people will realize that we're, you know we're to help! 00:23:40.45\00:23:42.85 And we love them and want to do something for them 00:23:42.88\00:23:44.75 and you know it's just a tangible way to show that. 00:23:44.78\00:23:46.59 We decided to do the health fair at Barabeana because we wanted 00:23:46.62\00:23:50.92 a way to start developing relationships with the people 00:23:50.95\00:23:54.05 out here. It's kind of like friendship evangelism. 00:23:54.08\00:23:56.77 You know you get to know someone and then as they get to know you 00:23:56.80\00:23:59.57 they ask you questions and then that gives you 00:23:59.60\00:24:01.93 an opportunity to share. 00:24:01.96\00:24:03.33 And Adventist World Aviation for that matter isn't just about 00:24:03.36\00:24:05.49 aviation. You know it's about sharing the gospel you know 00:24:05.52\00:24:10.57 in tangible ways. Transportation is a way to bring people in to 00:24:10.60\00:24:13.85 you know, areas that are difficult to get to that they 00:24:13.88\00:24:17.25 can learn more about God's love. And health is just one of those 00:24:17.28\00:24:19.77 things that just really everybody understands. 00:24:19.80\00:24:22.48 It's a language that everybody understands. Everybody wants to 00:24:22.51\00:24:24.44 be healthy. So we try to do that You know, Jesus whenever He went 00:24:24.47\00:24:28.64 into a village, often He'd leave with-He wouldn't leave till 00:24:28.67\00:24:31.62 everybody was healed. You know, before He shared any message 00:24:31.65\00:24:34.31 with them. He just would heal their physical maladies. 00:24:34.34\00:24:36.45 So that is what we are trying to do, I guess. 00:24:36.48\00:24:38.57 So we've got a dental station. And at the dental station Karen 00:24:39.10\00:24:42.95 is going through and showing the kids how to brush their teeth. 00:24:42.98\00:24:45.18 Some things about how your teeth are put together and what 00:24:45.21\00:24:48.54 to look for, so that you have good healthy teeth. 00:24:48.57\00:24:51.40 And then inside the church over here, we have health teaching 00:24:51.43\00:24:54.48 going on. And Greg VanFossen is up there doing, teaching on, 00:24:54.51\00:24:57.17 just everything from preventing blood pressure and diabetes to, 00:24:58.55\00:25:02.40 you know what causes back pain and you know 00:25:02.43\00:25:04.89 how the skeletal muscles work. And a variety of things. 00:25:04.92\00:25:08.41 So he's doing a lot of that too. And so many people 00:25:08.44\00:25:12.10 need to have education here and understand more about health. 00:25:12.13\00:25:14.64 You find the funniest things. Some people believe their heart 00:25:14.67\00:25:17.65 was over here. You know and it's right here of course. 00:25:17.68\00:25:20.35 You know it's just, things that we just take for granted, 00:25:20.38\00:25:23.64 you know they just don't understand. And so the education 00:25:23.67\00:25:26.28 is a big thing and once they understand some of these things, 00:25:26.31\00:25:28.04 it brings a lot you know, peace to their heart. 00:25:28.07\00:25:29.67 Cause they don't know, if they have a pain in their side is it 00:25:29.70\00:25:31.65 my heart you know and their hearts up here. 00:25:31.68\00:25:33.91 They might just have a side ache from not drinking enough water, 00:25:33.94\00:25:36.06 who knows. 00:25:36.09\00:25:37.46 And then we have some food that has been made. 00:25:37.49\00:25:41.91 Chandelle helped me make some food. Actually she probably made 00:25:41.94\00:25:44.35 more of it and I was being educated on how 00:25:44.38\00:25:47.14 to cook Guyanese food. And their diet tends to be rather 00:25:47.17\00:25:50.66 low in fiber and so we helped to make their food a little 00:25:50.69\00:25:54.59 healthier for them. Since they do have problems with glucose 00:25:54.62\00:25:57.26 and the increased fiber will help modulate their sugars. 00:25:57.29\00:26:00.03 So we have some samples of that, for them to try. 00:26:00.06\00:26:02.71 One of the common problems we find in Guyana, and all kinds of 00:26:02.74\00:26:05.87 countries around the world, is that they tend to eat a lot more 00:26:05.90\00:26:07.79 simple carbohydrates then they need to. 00:26:07.82\00:26:09.59 Guyanese like to have a pile of rice, a little bit of vegetable, 00:26:09.62\00:26:13.26 and a little bit meat or protein Where is should be the other 00:26:13.29\00:26:15.53 way around. You know, small amount of carbohydrates, 00:26:15.56\00:26:17.66 big pile of vegetables and a small amount of protein. 00:26:17.69\00:26:20.61 And so we are trying to teach them that that's a better way 00:26:20.64\00:26:22.72 to eat. It helps the blood sugar and blood pressure and all those 00:26:22.75\00:26:24.89 things. They tend to eat a lot more simple carbohydrates 00:26:24.92\00:26:27.79 than they need. And that's what causes diabetes. A lot of it. 00:26:27.82\00:26:29.94 And not proper exercise too and all those things. 00:26:29.97\00:26:32.37 And not drinking enough water. That's another huge issue. 00:26:32.40\00:26:34.60 A lot of people don't like to drink water here. 00:26:34.63\00:26:36.69 In general the main health concern tends to be diabetes 00:26:36.72\00:26:43.83 and high blood pressure. And so if we can help them understand 00:26:43.86\00:26:49.35 the needs to one know what their glucose levels are, and how they 00:26:49.38\00:26:55.05 can eat healthier, so that they don't have to worry 00:26:55.08\00:26:57.83 as much about it. 00:26:57.86\00:26:59.23 And the medical work is just a way that we can you know kind of 00:26:59.26\00:27:02.33 open their eyes that you know to see God's love, 00:27:02.36\00:27:04.89 something tangible. 00:27:04.92\00:27:06.29 You know that's what a lot of times people don't see. 00:27:06.32\00:27:08.69 Everyone goes around knocking on door and trying to get them to 00:27:08.72\00:27:11.28 convert to their church but they don't really see God's love. 00:27:11.31\00:27:13.84 You know that's really what it's all about. 00:27:13.87\00:27:15.56 You're not going to be saved by being a member of our church, 00:27:15.59\00:27:18.61 but I do believe that the truth that our church holds is pure. 00:27:18.64\00:27:22.28 And it's based on the Bible. And I just want to share that 00:27:22.31\00:27:24.27 love with others. That ability to get in there and share that 00:27:24.30\00:27:27.21 with them. So that's really what it's all about. Ultimately. 00:27:27.24\00:27:29.83 The villagers listen attentively to the information 00:27:29.86\00:27:33.02 everyone is sharing. 00:27:33.05\00:27:34.42 As the day comes to a close, all can agree that today was 00:27:34.45\00:27:39.52 a huge success. They all give the credit to God for such a 00:27:39.55\00:27:44.36 great outreach opportunity. 00:27:44.39\00:27:46.43 Days like today remind all the team members why they so badly 00:27:47.48\00:27:51.21 need ground transportation. The two airplanes make a big 00:27:51.24\00:27:55.34 impact, but a 4x4 truck can be greatly utilized 00:27:55.37\00:27:59.65 in saving souls as well. 00:27:59.68\00:28:01.05 Jesus said in the great Gospel Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 00:28:02.32\00:28:06.23 that we are to go into all the world! 00:28:06.26\00:28:08.33 Well, Adventist World Aviation is dedicated to doing just that! 00:28:08.74\00:28:12.16 There are between six and a half and seven billion people 00:28:12.19\00:28:15.45 now living on planet earth. And two billion of them have 00:28:15.48\00:28:18.60 never heard of Jesus. 00:28:18.63\00:28:20.20 Of the two billion, eight hundred million 00:28:20.23\00:28:23.50 of them can only be reached like means like aircraft. 00:28:23.53\00:28:26.56 or through aviation support. 00:28:26.59\00:28:28.67 We go into the un-reached areas of the world. 00:28:28.70\00:28:31.91 What we find when we go in there 00:28:31.94\00:28:33.95 we find death and disease and despair. 00:28:33.98\00:28:36.74 What we bring them is hope, health and life. 00:28:37.84\00:28:41.31 And a great Gospel message that Jesus loves them. 00:28:41.34\00:28:44.05 That there is somebody out there, who does care. 00:28:44.08\00:28:46.28 They often ask, why do you do this? 00:28:47.51\00:28:49.48 We say, because Jesus loves you! 00:28:50.32\00:28:51.80 And so the message that we bring them is absolute hope. 00:28:52.40\00:28:55.75 Since it's inception, 1995, AWA, or Adventist World Aviation 00:28:56.45\00:29:00.98 has been able to relieve over thirty five epidemics. 00:29:01.01\00:29:03.70 We've literally flown millions of missionary miles. 00:29:03.73\00:29:07.54 We are relieving the pain and suffering of those who live 00:29:07.57\00:29:09.96 in these remote parts of the world. Helping them. 00:29:09.99\00:29:12.04 Will you pray for us!
