My name is Laura Labore and I am a pilot and a nurse for 00:00:51.15\00:00:55.75 Adventist World Aviation and we are currently 00:00:55.78\00:00:58.09 in Guyana South America. 00:00:58.12\00:00:59.79 We've been in Guyana for almost seven years now and we've been 00:00:59.82\00:01:03.72 in particularly in Mabaruma for about five and a half now. 00:01:03.75\00:01:06.61 One of the things that is so exciting. 00:01:06.64\00:01:09.00 I mean for me personally, I think our team could identify 00:01:09.03\00:01:11.25 with this as well is that living in a community like Mabaruma, 00:01:11.28\00:01:15.23 we're not just there for short term. We live there. 00:01:16.44\00:01:18.95 We've been there five years now. We've gotten to know a lot of 00:01:18.98\00:01:21.52 people. We've built a lot of relationships. There are many 00:01:21.55\00:01:25.44 people there that have been impacted very positively both 00:01:25.47\00:01:29.33 for medical reasons as well as just purely from a relationship 00:01:29.36\00:01:33.21 standpoint. 00:01:33.24\00:01:34.61 Bill and Laura Labore live in Mabaruma Guyana in a small 00:01:34.64\00:01:37.75 house that they rent. They live right in the center of town 00:01:37.78\00:01:41.13 and have constant traffic buzzing all around them. 00:01:41.16\00:01:44.22 Their small home is less than a quarter mile away from the local 00:01:44.25\00:01:47.61 public school and for many students its right in the path 00:01:47.64\00:01:51.34 of their daily commute to school each day. 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.33 One of the areas that we are involved in that we didn't 00:01:53.36\00:01:56.24 really plan on, is outreaching to some of the local children. 00:01:56.27\00:02:00.30 Some of them don't have enough to eat breakfast in the morning 00:02:00.33\00:02:03.17 and when we got here we noticed that they weren't even going 00:02:03.20\00:02:05.23 to school at all and so they started coming hanging out at 00:02:05.26\00:02:10.10 our house, playing with our kids and asking for food. 00:02:10.13\00:02:14.08 And we realized that when they were going to school, 00:02:14.11\00:02:16.53 they were going with empty bellies. Now there's a school 00:02:16.56\00:02:18.88 program at lunch that the US pays for where they get free 00:02:18.91\00:02:21.86 lunch and so what we started is they come in the morning 00:02:21.89\00:02:25.57 and usually we give them bread and butter 00:02:25.60\00:02:27.04 and bananas or some kind of fruit, just the basics. 00:02:27.07\00:02:30.01 And feed them. Have worship with them, if we have time and then 00:02:30.04\00:02:34.15 they go off to school. And they just love coming to our house. 00:02:34.18\00:02:37.85 Not only to play, but also for food and they come to us with 00:02:37.88\00:02:41.55 little tiny things, like band aids for itty bitty bitty 00:02:41.58\00:02:44.95 boo-boos that really don't need a band aid, and 00:02:44.98\00:02:47.33 I think what they really want is just a little bit of love. 00:02:47.36\00:02:50.05 And so I have boxes and boxes of band aids stocked. 00:02:50.08\00:02:53.32 Because I go through them like crazy. I'll go through eight 00:02:53.35\00:02:55.67 band-aids a day some times, with all of them coming saying 00:02:55.70\00:02:58.89 Sister Laura please for a plasta 00:02:58.92\00:03:01.09 and it's been a really good outreach. 00:03:01.12\00:03:04.09 They started coming to Sabbath school now and church. 00:03:04.12\00:03:06.99 enjoying worship and also doing better in their school work. 00:03:07.02\00:03:12.78 They will come back from school excited. They show me their 00:03:12.81\00:03:15.35 exercise book and they say look Sister Laura! Look what 00:03:15.38\00:03:17.40 I did in school today! and so I've kind of I guess taken on 00:03:17.43\00:03:21.37 a motherly figure and even though I thought 00:03:21.40\00:03:24.01 I was busy enough with the two. 00:03:24.04\00:03:25.68 Each morning, Laura's house quickly fills as small 00:03:25.71\00:03:29.88 bare feet make their way up the stairs to her home. 00:03:29.91\00:03:33.08 The children all feel perfectly welcome and have added 00:03:33.11\00:03:36.91 a stop to Auntie Laura's into their daily routine. 00:03:36.94\00:03:40.65 The Labore children have also become accustomed to their daily 00:03:41.46\00:03:44.38 playmates and gladly share their toys and belongings 00:03:44.41\00:03:47.65 with the village children. 00:03:47.68\00:03:49.26 But adding all these extra children into such a small space 00:03:49.87\00:03:54.01 creates a hectic atmosphere. 00:03:54.04\00:03:56.13 Yet, the Labores gladly open their doors to any child that 00:03:56.16\00:03:59.93 to stop by. Some children play, others do crafts, some read 00:03:59.96\00:04:05.09 while others just want to eat. Laura does her best to keep up 00:04:05.12\00:04:08.99 with all the additional hungry mouths. 00:04:09.02\00:04:11.44 Here in Mabaruma there is no bakery, so Laura bakes 00:04:11.47\00:04:15.49 all her own bread that she feeds to the children. 00:04:15.52\00:04:18.11 You are making tortillas? Yah... but they're not round. 00:04:18.75\00:04:24.49 Not at all. It's for lunch. 00:04:25.32\00:04:27.90 Laura also finds sponsors from the United States for some 00:04:27.93\00:04:31.55 of the children's basic needs like clothing and shoes. 00:04:31.58\00:04:34.83 There is someone in the States who wants to buy them some 00:04:34.86\00:04:37.06 footwear. And so I'm going to we drew up their foot, 00:04:37.09\00:04:42.12 I took a picture and we put the picture there and then give it 00:04:42.15\00:04:43.96 to the people so they can know who they are buy for. 00:04:43.99\00:04:47.02 Six children this morning. There will be a couple more tomorrow 00:04:48.39\00:04:51.15 that will come by to get theirs drawn too. 00:04:51.18\00:04:53.80 (child singing) 00:04:53.83\00:04:56.14 Ok you guys ready? 00:04:56.17\00:04:57.74 Laura also has a ministry out of her home. She engages the 00:04:58.56\00:05:02.03 the children to sing and reads Bible stories to them 00:05:02.06\00:05:04.60 each morning. 00:05:04.63\00:05:06.00 Having all these children in her home could easily be a full time 00:05:31.03\00:05:34.25 job for Laura, yet she manages to do all this before 830 in the 00:05:34.28\00:05:38.33 morning when she switches over to her other job, 00:05:38.36\00:05:40.97 being a pilot and a nurse. 00:05:41.00\00:05:43.33 After worship she sends all her children off to school. 00:05:44.16\00:05:47.27 The local children go to the public school, 00:05:47.30\00:05:49.36 while her own go to Annika each day to be home schooled. 00:05:49.39\00:05:53.22 Annika's primary purpose for being in Guyana is to home 00:05:53.25\00:05:57.38 school the Labore children. She took a year away from her 00:05:57.41\00:06:00.84 college studies to move to Guyana and ensure that 00:06:00.87\00:06:03.82 Danni and Micah receive a good education. 00:06:03.85\00:06:06.41 She fills each day with learning activities for them. 00:06:07.06\00:06:10.45 My name is Annika Jenson. I've been here for a little over 00:06:11.57\00:06:15.59 six months now and I'm here to support the missionaries and 00:06:15.62\00:06:19.63 the primary way that I do that 00:06:19.66\00:06:21.03 is home schooling Micah and Danni Labore. 00:06:21.06\00:06:23.07 I'm a Walla Walla University student, and I'm here through 00:06:23.10\00:06:25.94 their student mission program. I've always wanted to take a 00:06:25.97\00:06:28.58 year off and to go abroad and so I was at Sabbath school 00:06:28.61\00:06:34.67 in Walla Walla one day and we ran into Greg and Crystal 00:06:34.70\00:06:38.10 VanFossen through some mutual friends and started talking to 00:06:38.13\00:06:42.06 them and asked if they could use a student nurse down here where 00:06:42.09\00:06:49.06 they were going in Guyana and she put me in touch with Laura 00:06:49.09\00:06:52.07 and I ended up down here home schooling their kids 00:06:52.10\00:06:54.28 and it has been fantastic. 00:06:54.31\00:06:55.84 I know that I am supposed to be here this year and 00:06:55.87\00:06:58.30 it has been fantastic. I think that if I had just muscled my 00:06:58.33\00:07:03.58 way into coming here and done it on my own accord 00:07:03.61\00:07:07.83 then I probably would have been miserable. 00:07:07.86\00:07:09.59 But if you are feeling Jesus calling you and feeling like 00:07:09.62\00:07:16.55 you should go, then absolutely. Fallow that calling and go 00:07:16.58\00:07:21.09 where you are directed. And it will be the best thing. 00:07:21.12\00:07:24.20 I've learned a lot about mission and about love. That it isn't 00:07:24.23\00:07:29.60 a lot of the things that we tag as mission activities about 00:07:29.63\00:07:33.14 going and giving things out or helping the poor you know 00:07:33.17\00:07:37.51 starving child learn how to read and that sort of thing. 00:07:37.54\00:07:39.87 It's more about living, here, and living in a different way. 00:07:39.90\00:07:44.05 Because we live differently. Not only because we are Americans 00:07:44.08\00:07:47.07 but because we are Christians and Seventh Day Adventists. 00:07:47.10\00:07:49.21 And people notice that a whole lot more 00:07:49.24\00:07:52.35 than any other simple act that we would do. 00:07:52.38\00:07:55.62 They see how we treat the children or how the Labores 00:07:55.65\00:07:59.50 treat their dog or things like that. How they just go about day 00:07:59.53\00:08:03.89 to day life. And they notice little things like that, 00:08:03.92\00:08:06.64 more than any of the big things. 00:08:06.67\00:08:08.72 Any of the big events that we could do. 00:08:08.75\00:08:10.80 Having Annika there frees, Laura and Bill so they can concentrate 00:08:11.52\00:08:15.20 on their mission work during the day while they know their 00:08:15.23\00:08:17.93 children are receiving wonderful instruction 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.06 from their tutor Annika. 00:08:20.09\00:08:22.13 I really am happy to raise my kids to be missionary kids. 00:08:22.16\00:08:25.22 I just think there is just so much more that 00:08:25.25\00:08:29.02 they are getting out of life. 00:08:29.05\00:08:30.42 And I've had people in the States that are always telling 00:08:30.45\00:08:32.45 us oh what are they going to miss out? 00:08:32.48\00:08:34.05 You know they are missing out on all the things in America". 00:08:34.08\00:08:36.41 But here they're learning how to climb papaya trees and go in 00:08:36.44\00:08:41.12 canoes and all kinds of wonderful things. But I think 00:08:41.15\00:08:43.50 most importantly is, they're learning to deal with another 00:08:43.53\00:08:46.97 culture. That we're different. We're the minority here. 00:08:47.00\00:08:51.76 They're also learning about giving, on a daily bases. 00:08:52.96\00:08:56.19 Because the needs are so great. And they are constantly seeing 00:08:56.22\00:08:59.86 people in need and getting involved with their needs. 00:09:00.49\00:09:03.27 And so I think that's really important for kids to grow up 00:09:03.30\00:09:06.27 with that and just see the true meaning of sharing Jesus. 00:09:06.30\00:09:09.37 They have the opportunity every single day already in their 00:09:09.40\00:09:11.73 little lives and already because of them, some people are 00:09:11.76\00:09:14.44 in the church and so they are already being good missionaries. 00:09:14.47\00:09:18.04 Danni and Micah are not the only mission kids that are being 00:09:18.17\00:09:20.92 home schooled. 00:09:20.95\00:09:22.32 In fact all three families home school their children. 00:09:22.35\00:09:25.71 I'm home schooling the boys, or I was. We have a home schooler, 00:09:26.24\00:09:30.55 that's a teacher that's here to help with home schooling 00:09:30.58\00:09:33.03 this year and that's been a terrific blessing to us all. 00:09:33.06\00:09:36.60 We tried going to school here, but we didn't learn as much 00:09:36.63\00:09:41.10 as we would in home schooling. So now Tyler teaches us in all 00:09:41.13\00:09:45.77 the subjects except for on-line school we use West Coast 00:09:45.80\00:09:50.06 Adventist Academy and we talk to our teacher every week. 00:09:50.09\00:09:54.54 My main responsibility is tutoring Jake and Zack, 00:09:54.57\00:09:58.31 the Wickwire children in their daily home school routine. 00:09:58.34\00:10:01.62 I had always felt in the back of my mind that mission work would 00:10:01.65\00:10:04.92 be a good thing for me to do before I settled into 00:10:04.95\00:10:07.52 a daily routine of the work and a family life. 00:10:07.55\00:10:11.08 I always felt like it would be good to really immerse myself 00:10:11.77\00:10:15.29 even for just a few months in another culture and feel 00:10:15.32\00:10:19.76 something different then just what I've been accustomed 00:10:19.96\00:10:22.06 to my whole life. 00:10:22.09\00:10:23.46 And that was the main reason that brought me to Guyana. 00:10:23.49\00:10:26.44 A lot of the challenge of being a missionary is learning to put 00:10:26.47\00:10:30.11 yourself last. And it definitely been something that's been 00:10:30.14\00:10:32.84 a growing experience for me. I've had to learn as I go, 00:10:32.87\00:10:35.48 you know and not always worrying about my own needs first. 00:10:35.51\00:10:38.25 But I think it's something I'm gradually learning. 00:10:38.28\00:10:41.50 And something every missionary needs to be open to learning is, 00:10:41.53\00:10:45.25 to put their needs last. To put the needs of the people here, 00:10:45.28\00:10:48.29 your fellow missionaries and anyone you meet before yourself 00:10:48.32\00:10:53.03 because that's the mission. That's the reason you're here. 00:10:53.06\00:10:55.69 The reason I am here is for others, not for myself. Me being 00:10:56.10\00:10:59.80 here really frees up Karen Wickwire at least, so she can do 00:10:59.83\00:11:03.55 other things like go to clinic on Thursdays and be available to 00:11:03.58\00:11:06.69 to pick up the other missionaries so Having more of 00:11:06.72\00:11:09.45 us to do kind of more the mundane tasks enables the other 00:11:09.48\00:11:14.68 main missionaries the adults to do some more important things. 00:11:14.71\00:11:19.81 After Crystal and Annika finish home schooling the missionary 00:11:19.84\00:11:22.80 children they turn their attention to the village 00:11:22.83\00:11:25.47 children. They also tutor a few of them, who are falling behind 00:11:25.50\00:11:29.60 in the public school. 00:11:29.63\00:11:31.00 Education here isn't like it is in the United States where 00:11:31.03\00:11:34.02 you have to have mastered before you're moved on. 00:11:34.05\00:11:36.35 They actually took the no child left behind idea, and they said 00:11:36.38\00:11:41.89 if the United States isn't leaving any children behind 00:11:41.92\00:11:44.18 we shouldn't either. 00:11:44.21\00:11:45.58 And so, whether a child has mastered something or not, 00:11:45.61\00:11:48.64 they're not left behind, they're moved on to the next grade. 00:11:48.67\00:11:51.45 So when I started tutoring the boy that is in standard 6 he did 00:11:52.18\00:11:56.87 not know thirteen of his letters of the alphabet. 00:11:56.90\00:11:59.85 He did not know the sounds of about half of his alphabet. 00:11:59.88\00:12:03.81 So we just had to start with basic reading and he couldn't 00:12:03.84\00:12:08.11 even tell me the names of all the symbols for the numbers. 00:12:08.14\00:12:10.95 So we just started with really basic stuff. His brothers were 00:12:11.78\00:12:15.31 a little further along. And so Anika started tutoring them, 00:12:15.34\00:12:18.77 and I worked on catching the older one up. 00:12:18.80\00:12:21.15 And today he was actually reading probably at beginning 00:12:21.18\00:12:25.24 first grade level. And he knows... they know spotty things 00:12:25.27\00:12:29.64 in between so it's kind of hard. They might not know 00:12:29.67\00:12:32.98 their addition, by they'll know some of the multiplications. 00:12:33.01\00:12:36.15 So it's kind of hard trying to figure out exactly 00:12:36.18\00:12:38.62 what it is that they need. 00:12:38.65\00:12:40.54 The education system here in Guyana is government funded. 00:12:40.57\00:12:44.51 And is a little bit of a relic from when the British were 00:12:44.54\00:12:47.76 in control. And they seem to kind of put the best teachers 00:12:47.79\00:12:51.39 in Georgetown and then out from there ... 00:12:51.42\00:12:54.19 Out here in Region one, it's kind of the backwoods of Guyana. 00:12:54.22\00:12:57.33 And by the time you get here, the class sizes are huge and the 00:12:57.36\00:13:02.38 infrastructure and supplies are ... 00:13:02.41\00:13:05.31 It's really tough for the teachers to teach well. 00:13:05.64\00:13:08.17 And really tough for the kids to pick up on a lot of the things. 00:13:08.50\00:13:12.56 And so it would be wonderful if there was just a pack of retired 00:13:13.39\00:13:16.07 teachers or new teachers who wanted to come down here and 00:13:16.10\00:13:19.66 just help educate. Help teach to read. Help teach to count. 00:13:19.69\00:13:23.70 Since the children all have tutors, their parents can focus 00:13:24.35\00:13:28.03 on other tasks while they are studying. Even the simplest 00:13:28.06\00:13:31.71 tasks take 5 times longer in the mission field. 00:13:31.74\00:13:34.23 We don't have current during the day here. So I have to run 00:13:34.26\00:13:38.71 the generator so that my washing machine will run 00:13:38.74\00:13:40.68 during the day whenever I need to do laundry. 00:13:40.71\00:13:42.93 Karen Wickwire has to do a minimum of four loads of laundry 00:13:42.96\00:13:46.92 a week just to keep up with her, her husband and her two boys. 00:13:46.95\00:13:51.94 However they don't have the luxury of indoor laundry room. 00:13:51.97\00:13:55.57 They must start the generator and plug in the machine. 00:13:55.60\00:13:58.62 They must fill the washer with a hose or buckets of rainwater. 00:13:58.65\00:14:02.28 We mostly rely on the rain water that falls. It comes down on 00:14:02.31\00:14:05.93 the roof and its collected in this bin, this bin, and then 00:14:05.96\00:14:09.68 we've got three more at the back and one up high. Whenever 00:14:09.71\00:14:13.25 we want to get water in the house to drink, we normally 00:14:13.28\00:14:16.12 collect it from either this one, or another one that's around the 00:14:16.15\00:14:18.44 corner, and then we filter that water 00:14:18.47\00:14:21.04 and that's how we get our drinking water. 00:14:21.07\00:14:22.90 The things that I covet here are way different than the ones that 00:14:23.53\00:14:27.22 I do at home. Yah when I go home I look forward to doing laundry, 00:14:27.25\00:14:30.60 because it's fun. You just stick in, open up and it's done. 00:14:30.63\00:14:34.52 It just makes me miss stuff at home, like when I can just turn 00:14:34.55\00:14:38.01 the machine, go do whatever. 00:14:38.04\00:14:40.35 And know that whenever I get back to it, it'll be done. 00:14:40.38\00:14:44.14 Karen Wickwire cannot leave the wash, but must keep an eye on 00:14:44.17\00:14:48.06 load the entire time. After the first cycle she must catch it 00:14:48.09\00:14:52.47 in time to refill the washer with more water 00:14:52.50\00:14:55.42 to complete the wash process. 00:14:55.45\00:14:57.52 Well, if it's a dry season, I can hang it out on the line 00:14:58.15\00:15:00.81 in the yard. And I guess the rule of thumb is if it's up 00:15:00.84\00:15:04.37 before noon, it should dry by four o'clock. Our land lord told 00:15:04.40\00:15:08.10 us that if it's up much after four thirty, it just starts 00:15:08.13\00:15:10.59 getting moist again from the humidity. But if it's rainy 00:15:10.62\00:15:14.14 season, it could sit in here for like three days before it dries. 00:15:14.17\00:15:18.05 All in all a very time consuming task, however it still more 00:15:18.38\00:15:23.00 efficient then how the local villagers clean their clothing. 00:15:23.03\00:15:25.72 They gather at the river and children bathe themselves while 00:15:26.53\00:15:29.83 the women wash everything by hand and beat their clothing 00:15:29.86\00:15:33.39 with wash boards in the brown murky water. Yet surprisingly 00:15:33.42\00:15:37.49 their clothing comes out clean and their whites 00:15:37.52\00:15:40.33 still shine bright. 00:15:40.36\00:15:42.52 Despite all the difficulties that come with living in the 00:15:43.55\00:15:45.95 jungle, all the AWA team members agree that their efforts 00:15:45.98\00:15:50.66 are well worth it. None of them consider it a sacrifice and have 00:15:50.69\00:15:55.07 become very accustomed to and greatly enjoy their way of life. 00:15:55.10\00:15:59.48 While it might hold extra work and have the hassle of not 00:15:59.51\00:16:03.40 having the convinces, they are all very happy 00:16:03.43\00:16:07.10 with where God has placed them. 00:16:07.13\00:16:08.70 I don't think it's a sacrifice to live here at all. In fact 00:16:08.73\00:16:10.98 I think there's lots of lessons. It's a huge blessing! There's 00:16:11.01\00:16:13.82 so many days and I just wake up and just think Oh I just praise 00:16:13.85\00:16:16.44 God for my job. I think I have the best job in the world! 00:16:16.47\00:16:19.19 Even though some days are hard, every day isn't full of 00:16:19.92\00:16:22.62 excitement and stuff and sometimes 00:16:22.65\00:16:24.25 just day to day living here can be hard. 00:16:24.28\00:16:26.27 Everything that we eat, is pretty much made from scratch. 00:16:26.60\00:16:30.92 I can't just go buy tortillas, I have to make them. 00:16:30.95\00:16:33.96 And so it gets... We're busy all day long, but our list of things 00:16:34.07\00:16:39.33 that we've done is very very short at the end of the day, 00:16:39.36\00:16:41.79 just because everything takes so long. 00:16:41.82\00:16:43.31 So I miss the conveniences yes. I miss family. I miss friends. 00:16:43.34\00:16:46.97 But it's really worth it because of all the other things that we 00:16:47.00\00:16:51.54 get to do here. There's no way I could have a job like this in 00:16:51.57\00:16:55.28 the states where I get to fly one day, and do nursing the next 00:16:55.31\00:16:58.10 day and you know washing the air plane the next day and so, 00:16:58.13\00:17:01.96 for a person who doesn't really like scheduled 00:17:01.99\00:17:04.00 in the box type job, its perfect. 00:17:04.03\00:17:07.39 I think ultimately the sacrifices of comfort to be able 00:17:07.42\00:17:11.20 to do mission work is worth it. It may not seem like it at first 00:17:11.23\00:17:15.04 but being able to see some of the impact of what you've done 00:17:15.07\00:17:17.91 being able to... just know that you've helped I think 00:17:17.94\00:17:21.24 ultimately is worth the sacrifice. 00:17:21.27\00:17:23.22 Any day, that I can come home at the end of the day and know that 00:17:23.25\00:17:31.62 even for one person, adult or child, something that I've been 00:17:31.65\00:17:36.75 able to do, because of God given skills to me that can make a 00:17:36.78\00:17:41.10 difference in their life, then that day is a good day. 00:17:41.13\00:17:44.90 And that is fulfilling for me. 00:17:44.93\00:17:47.17 Serving other people, is what God is all about to begin with. 00:17:47.20\00:17:52.75 Everything He does, has to do with service and encouraging, 00:17:52.78\00:17:56.63 helping people. 00:17:56.66\00:17:58.03 I think being a servant means that you will be able to put 00:17:58.06\00:18:00.64 aside what you want, and do what God wants you to do 00:18:00.67\00:18:04.29 to help other people. 00:18:04.32\00:18:05.69 Mission work is so much more about love and about living the 00:18:05.72\00:18:09.64 way the people around you live and following Christ, 00:18:09.67\00:18:13.37 than it is about giving things out or about education. 00:18:13.40\00:18:20.08 That's an important part of it, 00:18:20.11\00:18:21.73 but that comes as a result of living and following Jesus. 00:18:21.76\00:18:26.22 It's actually very peaceful. And it's a good way to live. 00:18:26.25\00:18:30.31 And we do have, I have job satisfaction. And a lot of 00:18:30.34\00:18:34.24 people don't have job satisfaction, they hate their 00:18:34.27\00:18:36.34 jobs and I love it! Because I think, if you completely submit 00:18:36.37\00:18:39.66 to God He is going to take you and help you do what your 00:18:39.69\00:18:43.55 talents are. He knows best what your talents are 00:18:43.58\00:18:45.57 because He's the one Who gave them to you. 00:18:45.60\00:18:47.54 And so if you submit to Him, He's going to take you and 00:18:47.57\00:18:51.16 grow you and make you blossom into something 00:18:51.19\00:18:54.80 that you never thought you could be. 00:18:54.83\00:18:56.58 For our family, the thing that gives us the greatest feeling 00:18:56.61\00:19:00.50 of accomplishment from our time here is just the opportunity 00:19:00.53\00:19:03.53 to show care and compassion to the people that need it the most 00:19:03.56\00:19:07.21 and don't often see it from others. 00:19:07.24\00:19:10.34 A lot of people's lives are going to be changed 00:19:10.37\00:19:12.23 because of the families that live here. 00:19:12.26\00:19:14.93 Just recently we went to Baramita We took a flight there. 00:19:19.26\00:19:22.79 It's about a thirty minute flight from here. 00:19:22.82\00:19:24.50 And as we traveled there, it was very impressive to look out 00:19:24.53\00:19:27.22 the window and see the... what one of our pilots calls the 00:19:27.25\00:19:31.56 "broccoli" out there. There's just no place to land. 00:19:31.59\00:19:33.86 And you can just see there is no road, there is no infrastructure 00:19:34.47\00:19:37.42 to get to these places. Here this place is a thirty minute 00:19:37.45\00:19:40.74 plane flight away, but I would imagine, if you were to take 00:19:40.77\00:19:44.18 a some sort of off road vehicle, you probably couldn't get there 00:19:44.21\00:19:47.20 within four or five days. 00:19:47.23\00:19:48.80 To reach these people is just incredible by aircraft. 00:19:48.83\00:19:52.09 You know, you hear about places like Guyana and 00:19:52.12\00:19:55.91 that are hard to reach places, but you don't really get 00:19:55.94\00:19:57.83 a feel for it until you are actually in the air. 00:19:57.86\00:20:00.33 While we were there, we saw a house that we had built. 00:20:00.36\00:20:04.04 That Adventist World Aviation had constructed. It was a sad 00:20:04.07\00:20:07.39 thing to see that the roof is on and the walls are up. 00:20:07.42\00:20:11.07 But it has so much needs. It needs water. The electricity 00:20:11.10\00:20:13.95 is starting to go into the place. And even after the place 00:20:13.98\00:20:16.92 is built, we're still missing one major component. 00:20:16.95\00:20:19.58 That's our missionaries. Oh the desperate need for 00:20:19.61\00:20:22.64 missionaries to live in that area right off the air park, 00:20:22.67\00:20:25.78 is great. 00:20:25.81\00:20:27.56 The three families in Guyana are looking to expand to four. 00:20:27.59\00:20:31.49 In a village about 30 minutes away the AWA team has built 00:20:31.52\00:20:35.96 another house that lies empty waiting for another 00:20:35.99\00:20:39.04 mission family. In the mean time the local villagers 00:20:39.07\00:20:42.34 wait and hope that the family comes soon. 00:20:42.37\00:20:45.31 They watch and take care of the property 00:20:45.34\00:20:47.63 in hopes of new missionary to come and join them. 00:20:47.66\00:20:51.46 We are in a village today of Baramita. And Baramita is a 00:20:51.49\00:20:54.75 project that we've been working on now for ...Oh, going on 00:20:54.78\00:20:58.04 almost three years really. We began here just doing medical 00:20:58.07\00:21:02.80 evacuations and bring in supplies for the village. 00:21:02.83\00:21:05.81 It's a pretty isolated village. Initially we were told that 00:21:05.84\00:21:09.54 you know we could not talk about our religion here 00:21:09.57\00:21:11.45 or anything like that but we could do the medical 00:21:11.48\00:21:13.12 evacuations and so we went ahead and we did that. 00:21:13.15\00:21:15.78 Really without any purpose other than just being able 00:21:15.81\00:21:18.61 to help them. But as time went on a year and a half of, 00:21:18.64\00:21:21.70 you know literally doing the medical evacuations, bringing 00:21:21.73\00:21:24.72 back even their dead to be buried here which had never been 00:21:24.75\00:21:28.27 done before. Before we came here, this is the first time 00:21:28.30\00:21:30.18 ever they were to bury their dead here in their village. 00:21:30.21\00:21:32.95 It meant very much to them and also you know... just building 00:21:32.98\00:21:38.62 relationships here. A year and half later they said 00:21:38.65\00:21:41.83 "we want you to come here and live among us." 00:21:41.86\00:21:43.85 And to teach them about what we know. And so 00:21:43.88\00:21:47.39 they actually gave us a piece of land which is behind me here. 00:21:47.42\00:21:50.43 And back last year Jud Wickwire our chief pilot and construction 00:21:50.46\00:21:56.05 manager brought a construction team down here from various 00:21:56.08\00:21:58.87 areas of the United States and they built the house that's 00:21:58.90\00:22:01.20 behind me here. And that house has been built specifically 00:22:01.23\00:22:04.21 for Bible workers and medical workers to stay at 00:22:04.24\00:22:07.28 as we minister to the people here in Baramita. 00:22:07.31\00:22:09.64 When we first came in, I remember the day we first time 00:22:09.67\00:22:12.54 flew into this village. We had a meeting with the village captain 00:22:12.57\00:22:15.67 and also Sam Beard, who actually lives behind over here and 00:22:15.70\00:22:19.65 discussed the possibility of coming in here and assisting 00:22:19.68\00:22:21.89 them with some of their needs and I just asked the question if 00:22:21.92\00:22:25.39 we'd be able to bring a pastor in here to actually encourage 00:22:25.42\00:22:28.31 people and talk to them in their homes and such. They had a 00:22:28.34\00:22:31.18 discussion between themselves in Carib and then they came back 00:22:31.21\00:22:34.53 to me in English and said "no we don't really want any 00:22:34.56\00:22:36.70 more religions here. We have one religion here and that's the 00:22:36.73\00:22:38.98 Jehovah Witnesses and we don't feel we need anything 00:22:39.01\00:22:41.33 beyond that" and I said Ok. 00:22:41.36\00:22:43.46 We didn't push the issue too much. So as I mentioned we went 00:22:43.49\00:22:45.62 ahead and we did just the medical and did health talks 00:22:45.65\00:22:49.36 here and had a health seminar here and a few other things. 00:22:49.39\00:22:52.14 But now we've had the invitation to come into the village 00:22:53.37\00:22:55.89 and the only church they have ever 00:22:55.92\00:22:57.29 known here is the Jehovah Witnesses. 00:22:57.32\00:22:58.69 They have one church here. we saw this as a tremendous 00:22:58.72\00:23:00.78 opportunity really to come in here and share more truth. 00:23:00.81\00:23:06.24 I mean an opportunity to talk more about Jesus 00:23:06.27\00:23:08.56 and the plan of salvation. 00:23:08.59\00:23:09.96 And to teach another aspect of the gospel that we believe 00:23:09.99\00:23:13.65 the Jehovah Witnesses don't really share. 00:23:13.68\00:23:15.76 Now the purpose of this house that we built here is very 00:23:15.79\00:23:19.47 simple and very significant. We feel the best way to be able 00:23:19.50\00:23:25.02 share the good news here in Baramita is to have people 00:23:25.05\00:23:27.81 living here among them. Every day, being present here. 00:23:27.84\00:23:30.72 Living out the gospel in their lives. Ministering to them 00:23:30.75\00:23:35.41 medically, ministering to them in terms of opening the 00:23:35.44\00:23:37.86 Bible truth to them and we need a person that actually stays on 00:23:37.89\00:23:42.70 the ground here that can be our contact person when we fly in 00:23:42.73\00:23:44.97 here for weather, to find out if there is any emergencies here. 00:23:45.00\00:23:48.52 Set up a radio here as well that we' d be able to communicate 00:23:48.55\00:23:51.13 by HF. And really just have a presence in this community where 00:23:51.16\00:23:55.91 we can bring medical volunteers in here and they can keep the 00:23:55.94\00:23:58.24 house so that we can have people stay there 00:23:58.27\00:23:59.74 when we bring people in. Keep it in good shape. 00:23:59.77\00:24:02.66 Manage the grounds, but most of all to have a family living here 00:24:03.09\00:24:07.98 among the people and then share the message in that way. 00:24:08.71\00:24:10.45 To actually see the gospel lived out in someone's 00:24:10.48\00:24:12.53 life really says a lot. Even more than a sermon. 00:24:12.56\00:24:14.95 Our team has talked about this village for quite some time. 00:24:14.98\00:24:16.92 We feel that one of the major issues need to be dealt with 00:24:16.95\00:24:19.70 here, are social issues. Alcoholism, sexual issues, 00:24:19.73\00:24:25.13 Family planning, family issues, that are needed to be dealt 00:24:27.51\00:24:30.37 with here. We would be very happy to find a social worker, 00:24:30.40\00:24:35.75 couple, even an individual, who would be willing to come here 00:24:35.78\00:24:39.16 and develop a 12 step program for instance for alcoholics. 00:24:39.19\00:24:42.89 That could be curtailed to this culture. 00:24:42.92\00:24:46.10 Out team is very gracious. They come here and sacrifice their 00:24:51.17\00:24:54.31 lives for as long as 5, 7, 10 years even, some of them. 00:24:54.34\00:24:58.22 They work in condition that most us would consider unbearable. 00:24:58.25\00:25:02.22 But, yet they do it. Out of the kindness of their hearts. 00:25:02.25\00:25:05.17 We need so much here! 00:25:05.38\00:25:07.37 And there is so much work that could be done. 00:25:07.40\00:25:09.22 The easiest way to show Christ to a community 00:25:09.25\00:25:12.91 is living like Christ did. He lived with the people, 00:25:12.94\00:25:15.30 He walked with the people. He spent time with them. 00:25:15.33\00:25:17.31 He could tell them about the kingdom of God in ways 00:25:17.34\00:25:20.94 that they could relate to. He talked about the sower in the 00:25:20.97\00:25:23.54 field, He talked about the way they keep sheep and stuff 00:25:23.57\00:25:26.47 So the way we can share Christ most effectively is to be 00:25:26.50\00:25:30.66 integrated into the community. To walk with them, 00:25:30.80\00:25:33.07 to do the same kinds of activities they do. 00:25:33.10\00:25:35.55 And to become personal friends with them. 00:25:35.58\00:25:37.87 If you look at Jesus and His example in the Bible, 00:25:37.90\00:25:40.74 He always went into villages and healed the physical needs 00:25:40.77\00:25:44.17 of the people first before He shared the salvation message. 00:25:44.20\00:25:48.02 And that's really the method that Wings for Humanity and AWA 00:25:48.05\00:25:51.63 has adopted from the beginning is that have to show people we 00:25:51.66\00:25:54.41 care about them. We have to show love to them first. 00:25:54.44\00:25:56.74 And as we do that then they want to know more about what we know. 00:25:56.77\00:25:59.88 The rest of the world wasn't created for Americans to 00:25:59.91\00:26:02.26 have some place to go as missionaries. 00:26:02.29\00:26:04.50 The rest of the world was created for other people to live 00:26:04.53\00:26:07.32 and love and grow up in and to experience Jesus in their place. 00:26:07.35\00:26:10.20 Our job as missionaries isn't to bring Jesus to these people. 00:26:10.23\00:26:13.77 It's to help them see where Jesus is already at work in the 00:26:13.80\00:26:16.05 places where they are. 00:26:16.08\00:26:17.45 (Music) 00:26:17.48\00:26:18.85 Jesus said, in the great Gospel Commission of Matthew 28:19-20 00:26:19.50\00:26:23.07 that we are to go into all the world! 00:26:23.10\00:26:25.63 Well, Adventist World Aviation is dedicated doing just that! 00:26:26.06\00:26:29.64 There are between six and a half and seven billion people 00:26:29.87\00:26:32.47 now living on planet earth. And two billion of them have never 00:26:32.50\00:26:36.55 heard of Jesus. Of the two billion, eight hundred million 00:26:36.58\00:26:40.48 of them can only be reached like means like aircraft. 00:26:40.51\00:26:43.72 or through aviation support. We go into the un-reached areas 00:26:43.75\00:26:48.44 of the world. 00:26:48.47\00:26:49.84 What we find when we go in there we find death and disease and 00:26:49.87\00:26:53.00 despair. 00:26:53.03\00:26:55.10 What we bring them is hope, health and life. 00:26:55.13\00:26:58.54 And a great Gospel message that Jesus loves them. That there is 00:26:58.57\00:27:01.65 somebody out there, who does care. 00:27:01.68\00:27:03.89 They often ask, why do you do this? 00:27:04.22\00:27:06.60 We say, because Jesus loves you! 00:27:07.03\00:27:09.03 And so the message that we bring them is absolute hope. 00:27:09.46\00:27:13.06 Since it's inception, 1995, AWA, or Adventist World Aviation 00:27:13.79\00:27:18.25 has been able to relieve over thirty five epidemics. 00:27:18.28\00:27:20.89 We've literally flown millions of missionary miles. 00:27:20.92\00:27:24.49 We are relieving the pain and suffering of those who live 00:27:24.52\00:27:26.95 in these remote parts of the world. Helping them 00:27:26.98\00:27:29.33 Will you pray for us! We need prayer more than anything else! 00:27:30.16\00:27:33.10 If you like more information please contact this station 00:27:33.53\00:27:36.71 3 Angels Broadcasting Network Or call the number on the screen 00:27:36.74\00:27:40.64 Thanks for watching! 00:27:40.67\00:27:42.25 (Music) 00:27:42.28\00:27:43.65
