From the very beginnings of Christianity, 00:00:13.84\00:00:16.47 ordinary men and women have been committed 00:00:16.50\00:00:19.26 to sharing the love and God with others. 00:00:19.29\00:00:21.80 This passion has especially been manifest 00:00:21.83\00:00:24.29 in the history of 00:00:24.32\00:00:25.35 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:00:25.38\00:00:28.05 One man who typifies this dedication is Joseph Bates. 00:00:28.08\00:00:33.41 Early in his life, Bates was attracted to the sea. 00:00:33.44\00:00:37.96 Eventually, he became a successful 00:00:37.99\00:00:40.21 and wealthy sea captain. 00:00:40.24\00:00:42.66 However, upon yielding his life to Christ, 00:00:42.69\00:00:45.45 his priorities took a dramatic change. 00:00:45.48\00:00:48.50 When Bates retired, 00:01:04.14\00:01:05.87 he and his wife Prudence had a small fortune. 00:01:05.90\00:01:10.15 Together, they decided that they would use their means 00:01:10.18\00:01:13.94 to share the news of Christ's soon return with the world. 00:01:13.97\00:01:18.22 However, they were unprepared 00:01:18.25\00:01:21.22 for how quickly their fortune would be diminished. 00:01:21.25\00:01:24.80 As Bates was working in his study, 00:01:24.83\00:01:27.11 his wife Prudence came in and asked him to buy some flour. 00:01:27.14\00:01:31.29 He took his last coin, a single York shilling 00:01:31.32\00:01:36.07 and purchased four pounds of flour. 00:01:36.10\00:01:39.27 When he brought it home to his wife, she wept. 00:01:39.30\00:01:42.82 The once prosperous sea captain had been reduced to poverty. 00:01:42.85\00:01:48.34 Later that day, 00:01:48.37\00:01:50.27 Bates felt impressed to go to the post office. 00:01:50.30\00:01:53.59 There he found a letter waiting for him. 00:01:53.62\00:01:56.42 It contained $10, a large some in his day. 00:01:56.45\00:02:01.63 With that money he bought 00:02:01.66\00:02:03.39 all the provisions his wife needed. 00:02:03.42\00:02:06.06 He also went to the printer. 00:02:06.09\00:02:07.46 There he placed a down payment 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.00 for the publication of his book. 00:02:10.03\00:02:12.23 "The Seventh-day Sabbath, a Perpetual Sign." 00:02:12.26\00:02:16.16 Today, we will be visiting Oak Haven 00:02:16.19\00:02:19.49 and OCI Ministry located in Michigan. 00:02:19.52\00:02:23.29 Here the workers are inspired 00:02:23.32\00:02:25.82 by the same spirit that motivated Joseph Bates. 00:02:25.85\00:02:30.52 Oak Haven has had several types of ministries 00:02:34.60\00:02:38.18 over the years, 00:02:38.21\00:02:39.24 and the one that we focused on in the last say 00:02:39.27\00:02:41.70 25, 30 years, 00:02:41.73\00:02:43.59 has been Country Life Natural Foods, 00:02:43.62\00:02:45.84 which is a huge food distribution and ministry. 00:02:45.87\00:02:49.92 So we go to about 17, 18 states with trucks. 00:02:49.95\00:02:54.02 Then we are able to ship UPS or postal service, 00:02:54.05\00:02:58.39 and we do have the retail store as well, 00:02:58.42\00:03:01.08 so people come to us 00:03:01.11\00:03:02.44 looking for the good food that we offer. 00:03:02.47\00:03:04.89 The store itself actually carries 00:03:04.92\00:03:07.82 just about every item that would in a warehouse, 00:03:07.85\00:03:10.95 except we would have it in a smaller quantity. 00:03:10.98\00:03:12.78 We have several packaging machines 00:03:12.81\00:03:14.97 that we are able to take the bulk product 00:03:15.00\00:03:17.13 and package it down to smaller sizes 00:03:17.16\00:03:19.29 that are more convenient. 00:03:19.32\00:03:20.70 We are a vegetarian store leaning towards vegan, 00:03:20.73\00:03:24.15 but it is sort of a crossroads for people, 00:03:24.18\00:03:26.50 just learning about what can I do 00:03:26.53\00:03:28.82 if I don't want to eat meat? 00:03:28.85\00:03:29.97 What can I now eat? 00:03:30.00\00:03:31.62 There are good, clean, wonderfully, 00:03:31.65\00:03:34.21 tasty meat substitutes. 00:03:34.24\00:03:35.77 We can hand them our recipe 00:03:35.80\00:03:37.99 from the last cooking class and say, 00:03:38.02\00:03:39.89 here is a great recipe. 00:03:39.92\00:03:41.89 You don't want meatballs anymore, 00:03:41.92\00:03:43.45 but here is a nut ball that's gonna taste just as good 00:03:43.48\00:03:46.85 and give you better nutrition. 00:03:46.88\00:03:48.66 In one area of the operation, 00:03:50.51\00:03:53.19 we actually have a small production facility 00:03:53.22\00:03:55.51 where we bake Granola. 00:03:55.54\00:03:57.52 So we do two flavors of Granola, 00:03:57.55\00:03:59.44 almond delicious and a Cashew Date Delight 00:03:59.47\00:04:01.84 is very popular. 00:04:01.87\00:04:03.38 We bake it a couple of times a month 00:04:03.41\00:04:05.11 then ship it all out with the rest of our products. 00:04:05.14\00:04:08.49 Granola really had some roots in the establishment 00:04:08.52\00:04:11.74 of Country Life back in the early 1970s. 00:04:11.77\00:04:15.35 And they started getting Granola then they wanted some oats 00:04:15.38\00:04:18.41 and they wanted some raisins and almonds. 00:04:18.44\00:04:20.27 And so, the Granola has been integral to them, 00:04:20.30\00:04:23.67 the beginnings of our operation. 00:04:23.70\00:04:26.11 We really feel that our food distribution 00:04:26.14\00:04:30.11 is a food ministry. 00:04:30.14\00:04:32.93 It's not just a business. 00:04:32.96\00:04:34.16 And so everything we do, 00:04:34.19\00:04:35.61 every employee that we have is a missionary. 00:04:35.64\00:04:38.57 What's really nice these times 00:04:38.60\00:04:40.05 when we get to talk about the Lord? 00:04:40.08\00:04:41.29 Doesn't get any better than that, you know. 00:04:41.32\00:04:44.29 So, you know, to me this is a ministry. 00:04:44.32\00:04:48.35 We do deliver the stuff 00:04:48.38\00:04:50.72 which is the main part of the job, 00:04:50.75\00:04:52.85 but then they get those opportunities, 00:04:52.88\00:04:54.93 you know, the divine appointments. 00:04:54.96\00:04:56.55 Our goal is to really reach people for Christ, 00:04:58.41\00:05:02.80 to let them know that God loves them 00:05:02.83\00:05:05.05 and that He cares about them. 00:05:05.08\00:05:06.74 And one of the ways that we can do that is 00:05:06.77\00:05:08.65 through the help outreach because it's so non-threatening. 00:05:08.68\00:05:11.84 We have morning worship every morning for our staff. 00:05:11.87\00:05:15.28 We pray together constantly. 00:05:15.31\00:05:17.59 We look for opportunities to help people 00:05:17.62\00:05:20.75 and not just with physical food. 00:05:20.78\00:05:23.28 Our retail store has thousands of customers 00:05:25.31\00:05:28.62 walking in the door and so they come to buy food, 00:05:28.65\00:05:32.37 but they come to get more than food. 00:05:32.40\00:05:35.03 They come because they are beginning to trust us 00:05:35.06\00:05:38.41 and many of them have a longstanding trust in us 00:05:38.44\00:05:41.16 and relationship that we've built. 00:05:41.19\00:05:43.69 Because we do a lot of telephone work, 00:05:43.72\00:05:45.54 we're always in touch with people. 00:05:45.57\00:05:47.80 And so our ministry aspect is something 00:05:47.83\00:05:51.68 that we keep in forefront of our mind 00:05:51.71\00:05:54.08 that every opportunity God brings to us 00:05:54.11\00:05:56.93 through our contact with people is an opportunity 00:05:56.96\00:06:00.08 to share some aspect of His plan for their life 00:06:00.11\00:06:03.54 or a person that just needs a word of comfort. 00:06:03.57\00:06:07.44 We nearly look to every contact 00:06:07.47\00:06:10.39 that we have to be an opportunity 00:06:10.42\00:06:12.84 for sharing Christ's love directly or indirectly. 00:06:12.87\00:06:16.65 I would say that Country Life Store is a ministry, 00:06:16.68\00:06:19.93 the people that have come in from the community 00:06:19.96\00:06:21.99 become more and more friends. 00:06:22.02\00:06:24.21 You get to know the regular people 00:06:24.24\00:06:26.02 on a first name basis. 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.03 If they have a problem, they can come and say, 00:06:28.06\00:06:30.33 "Jorine, this is going on." 00:06:30.36\00:06:32.75 And I can just stop right there, 00:06:32.78\00:06:34.26 they can come in my office 00:06:34.29\00:06:35.56 or we can just pray right in the store, 00:06:35.59\00:06:37.29 that's just a really good opportunity 00:06:37.32\00:06:39.39 get to know people at an in-depth level. 00:06:39.42\00:06:43.17 The Pullman Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:06:43.20\00:06:45.04 is located on the campus of Oak Haven 00:06:45.07\00:06:47.08 and we are very supportive, 00:06:47.11\00:06:48.68 not only of the work of the local church, 00:06:48.71\00:06:50.78 but of the Michigan Conference. 00:06:50.81\00:06:53.02 That's what we are here for 00:06:53.05\00:06:54.24 to help the church grow as lay people. 00:06:54.27\00:06:57.75 We also have a nice arrangement 00:06:57.78\00:07:00.71 with the Michigan Conference 00:07:00.74\00:07:02.21 where we have Emmanuel Institute evangelism school 00:07:02.24\00:07:05.19 housed on a campus. 00:07:05.22\00:07:06.84 And that's been really exciting over the last four years 00:07:06.87\00:07:09.40 to have them here at Oak Haven. 00:07:09.43\00:07:12.24 Emmanuel Institute fits in really well 00:07:12.27\00:07:15.52 because they share the same philosophy. 00:07:15.55\00:07:18.36 And I remember when we were first meeting 00:07:18.39\00:07:20.02 with Pastor Howard 00:07:20.05\00:07:21.78 and Emmanuel Office associate director 00:07:21.81\00:07:24.03 and they shared with us their passion 00:07:24.06\00:07:26.15 for outpost evangelism. 00:07:26.18\00:07:28.24 And we could see that we are all on the same page. 00:07:28.27\00:07:31.55 And so it's a real blessing working with- 00:07:31.58\00:07:34.49 With them because they do have the same vision 00:07:34.52\00:07:37.45 for outpost ministries. 00:07:37.48\00:07:39.75 We serve a couple purposes and the students 00:07:39.78\00:07:42.19 that come here usually have two things 00:07:42.22\00:07:43.61 that they want to learn. 00:07:43.64\00:07:44.67 They want to learn more 00:07:44.70\00:07:45.73 how to be confident in their faith 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.30 and comfortable in sharing. 00:07:48.33\00:07:49.96 As we understand ministry, 00:07:49.99\00:07:52.42 God's work is not gonna be finished 00:07:52.45\00:07:54.78 by professional ministry. 00:07:54.81\00:07:56.13 It's gonna be finished by lay people. 00:07:56.16\00:07:57.80 You know, that's what we see in a lot of supporting ministries 00:07:57.83\00:08:00.47 is lay people who catch enough of the vision of 00:08:00.50\00:08:03.40 what we are about as Seventh-day Adventist 00:08:03.43\00:08:05.79 to take the ball and run with it, 00:08:05.82\00:08:07.48 to really go out and use the talented skills 00:08:07.51\00:08:10.73 God has given them, to be supportive 00:08:10.76\00:08:13.16 with the mission of the church, 00:08:13.19\00:08:16.01 but to take their talents 00:08:16.04\00:08:17.17 and go where God's called them to help to hasten 00:08:17.20\00:08:19.68 the coming of Jesus, and that thrills me. 00:08:19.71\00:08:22.28 In early Adventist history, 00:08:27.48\00:08:29.56 Michigan became a center of church influence. 00:08:29.59\00:08:33.47 Ultimately, Joseph Bates moved here 00:08:33.50\00:08:36.30 as did Ellen and James White. 00:08:36.33\00:08:40.29 It was in Michigan, 00:08:40.32\00:08:41.76 not far from Oak Haven's campus 00:08:41.79\00:08:44.46 that Ellen White had her famous 00:08:44.49\00:08:46.39 and influential health reform vision. 00:08:46.42\00:08:50.47 In that vision, she was shown the close relationship 00:08:50.50\00:08:54.14 between health and spirituality. 00:08:54.17\00:08:57.54 In her writings, 00:08:57.57\00:08:59.30 she emphasized the importance of health food work 00:08:59.33\00:09:03.09 as a means of communicating the gospel. 00:09:03.12\00:09:06.42 Oak Haven 00:09:06.45\00:09:07.77 not only produces and distributes health foods, 00:09:07.80\00:09:11.61 but they communicate health principles 00:09:11.64\00:09:14.66 with the community at large. 00:09:14.69\00:09:17.13 Health Evangelism really is what Oak Haven's all about. 00:09:17.16\00:09:21.90 And Oak Haven was started to be able to reach out 00:09:21.93\00:09:25.83 to the community in all different ways 00:09:25.86\00:09:27.80 that would help people mentally, 00:09:27.83\00:09:29.27 physically, spiritually, emotionally. 00:09:29.30\00:09:31.90 And it's a real blessing the way it all works together. 00:09:31.93\00:09:35.26 God has given us this opportunity 00:09:35.29\00:09:37.63 to reach people. 00:09:37.66\00:09:38.87 And it's amazing even to us 00:09:38.90\00:09:40.85 as we review week by week the numbers of people 00:09:40.88\00:09:43.98 that we impact. 00:09:44.01\00:09:45.09 We have approximately 15,000 plus active customers. 00:09:45.12\00:09:51.49 We also have some distributors, 00:09:51.52\00:09:52.97 and that doesn't really include the store customers 00:09:53.00\00:09:56.68 that come through. 00:09:56.71\00:09:58.13 So the total number of customers 00:09:58.16\00:10:00.22 that we impact are somewhere between 00:10:00.25\00:10:03.25 I would say 18 to 20,000, 00:10:03.28\00:10:05.98 then knowing that every person 00:10:06.01\00:10:08.56 that we influence has their own sphere of influence. 00:10:08.59\00:10:11.98 And so there are tens of thousands of people 00:10:12.01\00:10:15.01 that are out there gaining the blessing from the food, 00:10:15.04\00:10:18.30 from the lifestyle, 00:10:18.33\00:10:19.43 from the spiritual component and we just feel like, 00:10:19.46\00:10:23.30 God has given that to us 00:10:23.33\00:10:25.23 and we want to be good stewards of handling that. 00:10:25.26\00:10:27.86 Aside from the work that we do in delivering 00:10:30.61\00:10:32.95 food across the country, 00:10:32.98\00:10:34.36 we have quite an active local ministry. 00:10:34.39\00:10:36.94 We have cooking classes that people just stand in line 00:10:36.97\00:10:40.86 to get a seat for we are filled to capacity in every class. 00:10:40.89\00:10:44.55 One of the things that Oak Haven has really practiced 00:10:46.02\00:10:49.56 is what Jesus said, 00:10:49.59\00:10:51.35 "Freely you have received, freely give." 00:10:51.38\00:10:54.22 And we've noticed that from the time 00:10:54.25\00:10:55.82 we first came here that there was a spirit of generosity 00:10:55.85\00:10:59.37 and we've tried to carry that out. 00:10:59.40\00:11:01.33 So we don't charge for our programs. 00:11:01.36\00:11:04.01 People can leave a donation if they want to. 00:11:04.04\00:11:06.25 We offer a lot the regular lifestyle programs, 00:11:07.72\00:11:12.18 diabetes reversal. 00:11:12.21\00:11:13.82 We do depression, recovery program. 00:11:13.85\00:11:17.00 We've done herbal remedies and natural remedies, 00:11:17.03\00:11:20.43 natural treatments, 00:11:20.46\00:11:22.50 edible wild plant classes and just anything 00:11:22.53\00:11:25.51 that we can do to reach the local need 00:11:25.54\00:11:28.40 because then we can personally get acquainted 00:11:28.43\00:11:31.02 with each of those people that we impact. 00:11:31.05\00:11:34.77 At our cooking classes, 00:11:34.80\00:11:36.72 we try to focus on a particular theme or topic each time. 00:11:36.75\00:11:41.03 And so we develop the recipes before hand 00:11:41.06\00:11:45.29 and we show the people how to cook. 00:11:45.32\00:11:48.09 We try to find some way to open up 00:11:48.12\00:11:51.04 the word of God and show them 00:11:51.07\00:11:53.89 that there is a God that loves them 00:11:53.92\00:11:55.40 and try to bring in that spiritual component. 00:11:55.43\00:11:58.27 It's such a blessing to see people 00:11:59.88\00:12:01.67 come to the programs and to hear them, 00:12:01.70\00:12:03.74 share how their lives were changing, 00:12:03.77\00:12:05.72 whether it's their health or their family 00:12:05.75\00:12:09.55 or just their outlook on life whatever it is. 00:12:09.58\00:12:12.80 And it just cheers us on and keeps us going, 00:12:12.83\00:12:16.12 knowing that we're being a blessing to so many people. 00:12:16.15\00:12:19.34 Really one of for most blessings has been Patty and Mark. 00:12:19.37\00:12:24.29 Just their support, you know, 00:12:24.32\00:12:27.54 teaching us how to make our own bread, 00:12:27.57\00:12:30.57 whole-wheat bread. 00:12:30.60\00:12:31.63 And even though one time Donna was asking 00:12:31.66\00:12:35.29 questions and Patty said, 00:12:35.32\00:12:37.02 "I'll come up to your house and help, you know, with-" 00:12:37.05\00:12:40.55 We were, you know, 00:12:41.51\00:12:42.54 an hour and a quarter drive away 00:12:42.57\00:12:44.19 and we just couldn't believe that 00:12:44.22\00:12:45.25 she would offer to do something like that. 00:12:45.28\00:12:48.15 I think the health message 00:12:48.18\00:12:50.66 and the gospel mesh in two ways. 00:12:50.69\00:12:54.59 One is that the health message opens up the way. 00:12:54.62\00:12:58.66 It breaks down prejudice. 00:12:58.69\00:13:00.34 So that people are more interested 00:13:00.37\00:13:01.89 in what we believe as Seventh-day Adventist. 00:13:01.92\00:13:05.15 And also, I think the health message 00:13:05.18\00:13:08.06 just prepares the mind and a heart to be more open 00:13:08.09\00:13:11.82 to the Holy Spirit. 00:13:11.85\00:13:12.88 When our minds are clear and our bodies are healthy, 00:13:12.91\00:13:16.38 we are much more receptive 00:13:16.41\00:13:18.06 to what the Holy Spirit is telling us. 00:13:18.09\00:13:19.73 It paves the way for the Holy Spirit 00:13:19.76\00:13:21.78 to do a work in our hearts. 00:13:21.81\00:13:23.66 We have a concept in ministry that involves churches 00:13:27.15\00:13:31.39 around the country that actually get our food, 00:13:31.42\00:13:34.95 invite their local neighbors and associates 00:13:34.98\00:13:37.69 and then plan an event that often 00:13:37.72\00:13:40.98 we can have a spiritual component 00:13:41.01\00:13:43.12 and tie that in with the monthly food delivery. 00:13:43.15\00:13:46.68 So people come and they get their food 00:13:46.71\00:13:48.80 and they'll get spiritual food 00:13:48.83\00:13:50.37 and some health presentation as well. 00:13:50.40\00:13:52.27 And that's being very successful in many of the churches 00:13:52.30\00:13:55.92 in the Michigan Conference, 00:13:55.95\00:13:57.98 working with the food co-op ministry. 00:13:58.01\00:13:59.98 Starting this year we've tried a new thing, 00:14:02.09\00:14:04.29 which several churches around the country are doing 00:14:04.32\00:14:07.12 and it is small meetings in your home. 00:14:07.15\00:14:10.30 We're using a program called Homes of Health and Hope, 00:14:10.33\00:14:13.72 and it's a follow-up to some of our other programs 00:14:13.75\00:14:16.31 where we have a small group, 00:14:16.34\00:14:18.05 come to our home and it's really exciting 00:14:18.08\00:14:21.17 because people open up a little bit more, 00:14:21.20\00:14:23.07 we get to build relationships 00:14:23.10\00:14:24.62 a little bit closer, pray with people, 00:14:24.65\00:14:27.32 and that's another element that 00:14:27.35\00:14:29.99 it's just prevailing much of what we do. 00:14:30.02\00:14:32.92 As one of the field vice presidents, 00:14:35.91\00:14:37.77 I am excited about being part of OCI. 00:14:37.80\00:14:41.50 It's a blessing to be a part of the family of Outpost 00:14:41.53\00:14:44.33 International. 00:14:44.36\00:14:45.90 And it's really encouraging to be able to visit 00:14:45.93\00:14:48.38 the different institutions and to see what they are doing. 00:14:48.41\00:14:51.71 It's been an opportunity to get the word out, 00:14:51.74\00:14:56.10 more about OCI. 00:14:56.13\00:14:57.61 And it's such an encouragement to see the creativity of God, 00:14:57.64\00:15:02.57 the ideas that God gives to individuals 00:15:02.60\00:15:04.96 of things that they can do as lay people. 00:15:04.99\00:15:07.10 OCI has been such a blessing in the way that 00:15:09.14\00:15:13.65 it has pulled all these 00:15:13.68\00:15:15.34 different lay ministries together 00:15:15.37\00:15:17.25 and with the leadership training 00:15:17.28\00:15:19.68 that it is provided, it is enabled. 00:15:19.71\00:15:22.55 Ministries that have pretty much been out there 00:15:22.58\00:15:24.91 on their own functioning to feel like 00:15:24.94\00:15:27.27 they're part of something. 00:15:27.30\00:15:29.00 And to be encourage by what others are doing. 00:15:29.03\00:15:31.50 And I see God just really moving to 00:15:31.53\00:15:35.27 pull the OCI Ministries together 00:15:35.30\00:15:37.20 and what's been done at the headquarters 00:15:37.23\00:15:39.06 is a big part of that. 00:15:39.09\00:15:41.40 Something that we can't underestimate 00:15:41.43\00:15:44.32 is the value of prayer. 00:15:44.35\00:15:46.05 And one of my favorite statements is from the book 00:15:46.08\00:15:49.49 "Ministry of Healing." 00:15:49.52\00:15:50.91 And it's in one of the later chapters, 00:15:50.94\00:15:52.85 Development and Service and that says, 00:15:52.88\00:15:55.61 "Pray and faith can do what, 00:15:55.64\00:15:58.03 no other power on earth can accomplish." 00:15:58.06\00:16:01.16 And we really take that to heart. 00:16:01.19\00:16:05.75 And our customers often will just light up. 00:16:05.78\00:16:10.13 They'll just respond in such positive way 00:16:10.16\00:16:12.39 just by the simple phrase. 00:16:12.42\00:16:13.98 Can we pray for you or can we pray with you? 00:16:14.01\00:16:16.82 And it's really- 00:16:16.85\00:16:18.59 It's really awesome when hearts are touched 00:16:18.62\00:16:21.49 by the connection that that we have with God. 00:16:21.52\00:16:24.83 We really believe that God answers prayer. 00:16:24.86\00:16:27.10 And that inspiration to people 00:16:27.13\00:16:29.32 is coming through in our ministry and they are often- 00:16:29.35\00:16:33.59 Often, customers will say, 00:16:33.62\00:16:34.98 "Please, bring it up in your staff meeting for prayer. 00:16:35.01\00:16:37.87 You know, mention my name or my needs." 00:16:37.90\00:16:40.11 And it's really encouraging to us. 00:16:40.14\00:16:41.63 Joseph Bates used his talents and resources 00:16:43.58\00:16:47.46 to communicate the good news of Christ's return 00:16:47.49\00:16:50.46 to this world. 00:16:50.49\00:16:51.88 In a similar way, 00:16:51.91\00:16:53.37 the workers in OCI Ministries use their gifts 00:16:53.40\00:16:57.33 to share God's love with others. 00:16:57.36\00:16:59.15 They believe their efforts will bear fruit 00:16:59.18\00:17:03.79 in the great harvest that Christ will reap when He returns. 00:17:03.82\00:17:08.23 We share this globe with about seven billion people. 00:17:10.16\00:17:14.55 That's a lot of people. 00:17:14.58\00:17:16.23 I'm standing here in this busy city. 00:17:16.26\00:17:19.24 It's easy to feel small and insignificant. 00:17:19.27\00:17:22.86 After all, I'm only one person. 00:17:22.89\00:17:24.98 What difference can I make? 00:17:25.01\00:17:26.92 But the fact is each of us can make a difference. 00:17:26.95\00:17:30.31 God is calling us to turn our lives and our skills 00:17:30.34\00:17:34.42 over to Him. 00:17:34.45\00:17:35.57 Around the world, 00:17:35.60\00:17:37.84 the individual workers at OCI Ministries 00:17:37.87\00:17:40.68 are letting God use them to bring hope and healing 00:17:40.71\00:17:44.10 one person at a time. 00:17:44.13\00:17:46.22 You can make a difference, too. 00:17:46.25\00:17:48.60 When you connect to OCI, 00:17:48.63\00:17:51.27 you connect to more than 80 ministries worldwide. 00:17:51.30\00:17:56.52 If you are interested in getting involved 00:17:56.55\00:17:59.11 in the global ministry of OCI, 00:17:59.14\00:18:01.53 visit our website or call our office. 00:18:01.56\00:18:04.55 We'd love to talk to you. 00:18:04.58\00:18:06.32 They are variety of risks confronting 00:18:15.44\00:18:17.74 today's young people. 00:18:17.77\00:18:19.45 In Sub-Saharan, Africa, 00:18:19.48\00:18:21.44 AIDS is a great threat to their existence. 00:18:21.47\00:18:25.67 This deadly virus can affect their lives in many ways, 00:18:25.70\00:18:29.96 from them contracting the virus to the devastation 00:18:29.99\00:18:33.00 that occurs when their parents come down with the disease. 00:18:33.03\00:18:37.27 Throughout Sub-Saharan, Africa, 00:18:37.30\00:18:39.39 there is a missing generation. 00:18:39.42\00:18:41.46 Tanzania ranks 3rd of all the African nations 00:18:42.66\00:18:45.72 in the greatest concentration of AIDS orphans. 00:18:45.75\00:18:49.49 In some parts of Tanzania, 00:18:49.52\00:18:51.23 almost half of the population is afflicted with the disease. 00:18:51.26\00:18:55.68 Another of our OCI Ministries is doing 00:18:55.71\00:18:59.21 what it can to rescue these at risk young people. 00:18:59.24\00:19:04.07 Eden valley Foster Care Mission 00:19:04.10\00:19:06.83 is dedicated to helping AIDS orphans. 00:19:06.86\00:19:09.48 Its focus is breaking the cycle 00:19:09.51\00:19:12.70 that this disease has brought to the people of Africa. 00:19:12.73\00:19:16.04 My wife and I spent 10 years in Africa, 00:19:18.55\00:19:20.61 and on our way home we decided to visit 00:19:20.64\00:19:24.74 our son in Tanzania, 00:19:24.77\00:19:27.27 and there is a man who wanted us to go 00:19:27.30\00:19:30.42 and visit a place called Lupillo in the Makati Mountains. 00:19:30.45\00:19:35.11 There is nothing going on there. 00:19:35.14\00:19:36.65 And so we left him some money to hire Bible workers 00:19:36.68\00:19:39.65 and to do the evangelistic series 00:19:39.68\00:19:41.72 and we flew to America. 00:19:41.75\00:19:43.81 But in America, we began getting emails saying 00:19:43.84\00:19:47.92 there is a lot of AIDS orphans there. 00:19:47.95\00:19:51.07 He came up with the number of 25,000 once, 00:19:51.10\00:19:53.89 another time it's 28,000. 00:19:53.92\00:19:55.84 We thought, "Now wait a minute, 00:19:55.87\00:19:58.17 that's an incredible number of orphans that can't be." 00:19:58.20\00:20:02.35 So we made another trip back to Tanzania 00:20:02.38\00:20:05.40 and we went up again into the mountains 00:20:05.43\00:20:06.99 to investigate this thing. 00:20:07.02\00:20:09.23 We went to the public school 00:20:09.26\00:20:10.62 and between 35 to 50% of the students 00:20:10.65\00:20:13.35 in the public schools were orphan. 00:20:13.38\00:20:15.24 And at that point, 00:20:15.27\00:20:16.30 my wife decided we've got to do something. 00:20:16.33\00:20:18.95 However, I was the president of Eden Valley, 00:20:18.98\00:20:22.04 I couldn't just uproot and go 00:20:22.07\00:20:24.71 and so we decided that she should do what she could do. 00:20:24.74\00:20:28.38 AIDS was the thing that was devastating the land here. 00:20:28.41\00:20:35.17 The whole generation of parents were missing. 00:20:35.20\00:20:38.63 I could see the young people had nothing. 00:20:38.66\00:20:42.59 There is nothing here for the young people. 00:20:42.62\00:20:45.60 And so once we checked over the land 00:20:45.63\00:20:49.87 and we found this place. 00:20:49.90\00:20:52.03 It had water, it had a forest 00:20:52.06\00:20:54.72 and it had some flat agricultural land. 00:20:54.75\00:20:58.30 We decided to go ahead and take it. 00:20:58.33\00:21:00.75 And now we have our whole school campus. 00:21:00.78\00:21:03.72 We have dormitories. We have staff homes. 00:21:03.75\00:21:06.41 We have classrooms. 00:21:06.44\00:21:09.63 We have carpentry, 00:21:09.66\00:21:11.63 beginner sewing and advance sewing 00:21:11.66\00:21:13.76 up to this time. 00:21:13.79\00:21:15.06 But our goal is not to stop there. 00:21:15.09\00:21:17.63 It's to provide agriculture and mechanics. 00:21:17.66\00:21:22.44 And we've built a mechanic shop with the pit 00:21:22.47\00:21:25.62 and now we're just waiting 00:21:25.65\00:21:27.26 for the Lord to provide us a teacher, 00:21:27.29\00:21:30.11 so this program can go ahead. 00:21:30.14\00:21:32.60 The real goal of the place is not just to teach him a trade. 00:21:34.16\00:21:39.00 We are here for evangelism. 00:21:39.03\00:21:40.46 I learned about God. 00:21:43.15\00:21:44.53 I was converted and was baptized while here 00:21:44.56\00:21:47.01 and learning things that will give you a better life. 00:21:47.04\00:21:50.71 And I'm also growing spiritually. 00:21:50.74\00:21:53.66 Every morning we have 45 minute to an hour Bible class 00:21:55.32\00:22:00.03 and then after that they start their classroom studies 00:22:00.06\00:22:03.40 which is carpentry and sewing. 00:22:03.43\00:22:05.35 Every morning from 8 to 9 they have Bible class. 00:22:08.53\00:22:11.41 I've been teaching 00:22:11.44\00:22:13.32 and the Jesus was also a carpenter. 00:22:13.35\00:22:15.49 And the students appreciate that He also did 00:22:15.52\00:22:18.24 what they are now doing. 00:22:18.27\00:22:19.67 With the skills that they are learning here, 00:22:22.65\00:22:25.01 we hope that they will be able to back into their villages 00:22:25.04\00:22:29.13 and do the simple work of making stools, 00:22:29.16\00:22:33.72 tables, beds, chairs. 00:22:33.75\00:22:35.89 And they will be able to not only do that, 00:22:35.92\00:22:38.85 but to reflect Christ in their work. 00:22:38.88\00:22:42.19 I will start my own sewing business 00:22:45.51\00:22:48.00 and we'll teach others how to sew. 00:22:48.03\00:22:49.80 One thing I would like is to have my own sewing machine 00:22:51.79\00:22:54.45 when I graduate. 00:22:54.48\00:22:56.38 We don't have sewing machines to give to every young girl 00:22:56.41\00:23:01.30 when they graduate. 00:23:01.33\00:23:02.36 So we have provided a way by giving them work 00:23:02.39\00:23:06.20 and this is a blessing to them and a blessing to us. 00:23:06.23\00:23:09.73 My education has been very helpful 00:23:11.98\00:23:14.54 because now I can make a living. 00:23:14.57\00:23:16.75 I'm so thankful to Mrs. Fournier 00:23:16.78\00:23:19.39 for helping to get me this sewing machine. 00:23:19.42\00:23:22.02 It is such a blessing. 00:23:22.05\00:23:24.71 To the boys, we give them a plane, hammer, 00:23:24.74\00:23:30.15 saw, chisel and a measuring tape when they graduate. 00:23:30.18\00:23:34.47 And this has been a blessing to them, too. 00:23:34.50\00:23:36.95 Because right straight off, 00:23:36.98\00:23:38.57 they can start a little business for themselves. 00:23:38.60\00:23:40.76 After graduating, I built this carpentry shop. 00:23:45.10\00:23:49.46 I would like to thank to school for my education 00:23:49.49\00:23:52.12 which has helped to me be successful with my work. 00:23:52.15\00:23:55.02 AID's creates many different pressures on local communities. 00:23:58.78\00:24:02.11 It interrupts the flow of normal community life. 00:24:02.14\00:24:06.33 For example, 00:24:06.36\00:24:07.68 the elderly are often trust into the role of being 00:24:07.71\00:24:11.15 primary caregivers for their now orphaned grandchildren. 00:24:11.18\00:24:15.67 Will region such is this suffer under the weight of AIDS. 00:24:15.70\00:24:20.89 There is a need for more education, 00:24:20.92\00:24:22.97 for better medical treatments. 00:24:23.00\00:24:26.23 Eden Valley Foster Care Mission 00:24:26.26\00:24:28.48 is doing what it can to help alleviate 00:24:28.51\00:24:31.61 some of these great needs as well. 00:24:31.64\00:24:34.76 We have a clothes distribution 00:24:36.34\00:24:38.08 that we do for the elementary kids. 00:24:38.11\00:24:40.90 They come over here or if it's a far village, 00:24:40.93\00:24:44.63 we go to their far village and we distribute clothing. 00:24:44.66\00:24:49.15 We buy material and we make dresses for them. 00:24:49.18\00:24:54.31 Last week, we had a clothing distribution 00:24:54.34\00:24:58.27 for the old people. 00:24:58.30\00:25:00.14 And they are always so, so thankful. 00:25:00.17\00:25:03.97 We do a lot of dental work and wound care. 00:25:04.00\00:25:08.09 And usually there is one or two people 00:25:08.12\00:25:10.79 sitting outside our door when we get up in the morning. 00:25:10.82\00:25:13.86 It would be nice to have a clinic. 00:25:15.32\00:25:17.94 We could put a clinic in the village 00:25:17.97\00:25:19.93 or have a clinic right here on campus. 00:25:19.96\00:25:23.76 Last week, we had a lady come to us. 00:25:23.79\00:25:26.96 She had been in the motorcycle accident. 00:25:26.99\00:25:30.11 Her clothes got caught in the wheel 00:25:30.14\00:25:32.64 and it caused the bike to tip 00:25:32.67\00:25:35.25 and so then she thrashed her foot. 00:25:35.28\00:25:38.08 It was very painful. 00:25:38.11\00:25:40.72 And so we put charcoal poultice on it the first night 00:25:40.75\00:25:44.17 and then I had to go away for some meetings. 00:25:44.20\00:25:47.22 I had taught her how to do hot and cold, 00:25:47.25\00:25:50.62 hot and cold. 00:25:50.65\00:25:52.22 And so she faithfully did that twice a day 00:25:52.25\00:25:55.56 which I am very grateful for. 00:25:55.59\00:25:57.63 I left there some charcoal, 00:25:57.66\00:25:59.10 showed her how to make the charcoal poultice. 00:25:59.13\00:26:00.96 And so this morning we went to look at her foot. 00:26:00.99\00:26:04.49 It looks really good. 00:26:04.52\00:26:07.32 We have two Bible workers here on campus. 00:26:08.48\00:26:10.89 They go into he local villages here 00:26:10.92\00:26:13.45 and they teach at the elementary schools. 00:26:13.48\00:26:18.06 They also visit house to house. 00:26:18.09\00:26:20.23 They do to know the people and help the people. 00:26:20.26\00:26:23.63 I feel like I am a pioneer and that I built up the place. 00:26:23.66\00:26:30.80 Now we are needing some people who would be happy to come in 00:26:30.83\00:26:35.07 and to nurture and mentor these young people. 00:26:35.10\00:26:39.11 So this is urgent need of us is to have 00:26:39.14\00:26:42.83 two families who would be willing to come here 00:26:42.86\00:26:46.25 and take over this program 00:26:46.28\00:26:48.03 and teach and to be a part of it, 00:26:48.06\00:26:50.35 and to make it their own. 00:26:50.38\00:26:51.96 It's His vision. 00:26:53.79\00:26:55.26 This is my motivating power. This is the Lord's work. 00:26:55.29\00:26:58.61 Helping people to know Jesus is what we want to do. 00:26:58.64\00:27:01.41 The aim of Eden Valley Foster Care mission 00:27:03.69\00:27:07.15 is to help the at risk young people in this region. 00:27:07.18\00:27:10.76 By giving them practical skills, 00:27:10.79\00:27:13.58 they enable them to earn a livelihood. 00:27:13.61\00:27:16.52 And that's escape the destructive lifestyle 00:27:16.55\00:27:19.73 that awaits so many of their friends. 00:27:19.76\00:27:22.92 The students here also learn of the love of God. 00:27:22.95\00:27:26.87 When they leave the school, 00:27:26.90\00:27:28.56 they go out and they make a significant impact 00:27:28.59\00:27:31.53 in the surrounding community. 00:27:31.56\00:27:34.25 God's blessing has been richly felt in this ministry, 00:27:34.28\00:27:38.13 but you too can have a part. 00:27:38.16\00:27:40.61 Your prayers make a huge difference in ministries 00:27:40.64\00:27:44.63 such as these. 00:27:44.66\00:27:46.37 I encourage you to consider 00:27:46.40\00:27:48.27 what you can do to help the expanding work of OCI 00:27:48.30\00:27:52.72 around the world. 00:27:52.75\00:27:54.03 We value your support. 00:27:57.35\00:27:59.65 Please, visit us at OutpostCenters.org. 00:27:59.68\00:28:02.64 To learn more about the worldwide work of OCI 00:28:02.67\00:28:06.06 and our member ministries, 00:28:06.09\00:28:07.58 such as Eden Valley Foster Care Mission. 00:28:07.61\00:28:10.27 We would also love to hear from you 00:28:12.07\00:28:14.30 at info@OutpostCenters.org. 00:28:14.33\00:28:17.93 Or please call us at 423.236.5600. 00:28:17.96\00:28:25.19
