The world today is gripped 00:00:16.20\00:00:17.69 in a combat that encircles the globe. 00:00:17.72\00:00:20.87 It's not a war between nations 00:00:20.90\00:00:23.36 but it's a war over the destiny of humanity. 00:00:23.39\00:00:27.46 Often called the great controversy 00:00:27.49\00:00:29.99 this battle rages in every city, town and country. 00:00:30.02\00:00:34.75 Join us today, as we visit two OCI Ministries 00:00:34.78\00:00:39.03 that are engaged in frontline battles 00:00:39.06\00:00:42.03 in this great conflict. 00:00:42.06\00:00:44.09 It's hard to imagine in this peaceful country setting 00:00:59.97\00:01:03.14 in Southwestern Tennessee 00:01:03.17\00:01:04.97 that at one time a fierce battle raged. 00:01:05.00\00:01:09.05 The Battle of Shiloh which was, 00:01:09.08\00:01:11.76 up to that point in US history 00:01:11.79\00:01:13.86 the bloodiest battle that had ever been waged 00:01:13.89\00:01:16.58 on American soil. 00:01:16.61\00:01:19.40 The northern troops were taken by surprise 00:01:19.43\00:01:21.79 by Confederate soldiers. 00:01:21.82\00:01:23.62 The army was unprepared. 00:01:23.65\00:01:26.52 One of the officers in the northern army 00:01:26.55\00:01:28.84 was a man by the name of Lew Wallace. 00:01:28.87\00:01:32.09 Lew Wallace is not known for any great heroics 00:01:32.12\00:01:35.32 in the Battle of Shiloh. 00:01:35.35\00:01:37.29 What he is better remembered for is writing the book Ben-Hur. 00:01:37.32\00:01:42.43 The storyline and that novel is about a man consumed 00:01:42.46\00:01:46.23 with the desire to get revenge, 00:01:46.26\00:01:48.97 until he meets Jesus Christ and encountering Christ 00:01:49.00\00:01:53.20 he lays down his weapons of war. 00:01:53.23\00:01:57.23 Today in this setting, students are being introduced 00:01:57.26\00:02:01.24 to that same Jesus Christ through the ministry 00:02:01.27\00:02:04.73 on Harbert Hills Academy. 00:02:04.76\00:02:07.89 Harbert Hills Academy was originally established 00:02:07.92\00:02:10.30 on the basis of helping young people 00:02:10.33\00:02:12.99 and the concept was not just to help young people in general 00:02:13.02\00:02:16.36 but really to give an opportunity to young people 00:02:16.39\00:02:19.41 who might not otherwise have a chance 00:02:19.44\00:02:21.61 for Christian education. 00:02:21.64\00:02:23.39 The most rewarding part of working here 00:02:23.42\00:02:26.51 is getting to know the students as an individual 00:02:26.54\00:02:29.69 and watching them grow over the years that they're here 00:02:29.72\00:02:33.05 both spiritually and academically. 00:02:33.08\00:02:34.76 You know, I'm used to seeing academic growth 00:02:34.79\00:02:37.04 but working at a boarding academy 00:02:37.07\00:02:39.23 I get to see them grow spiritually. 00:02:39.26\00:02:42.02 First of all we're educational institution 00:02:42.05\00:02:45.97 and we are a Seventh-day Adventist Education Institution, 00:02:46.00\00:02:50.77 and our training program along with the academic 00:02:50.80\00:02:53.87 and the spiritual program 00:02:53.90\00:02:55.72 is to give students hands-on experience. 00:02:55.75\00:02:58.47 So our goal for each student that we receive 00:02:58.50\00:03:01.33 is to give them the basics and to have them baptized 00:03:01.36\00:03:06.32 or re-baptized in some cases before the leave. 00:03:06.35\00:03:09.63 Since I've been here I understand 00:03:09.66\00:03:12.36 how God has really worked in me, 00:03:12.39\00:03:14.66 how He has used me as a tool to reach out to others. 00:03:14.69\00:03:18.94 I really think I'm growing spiritually, 00:03:18.97\00:03:20.86 mentally and physically here. 00:03:20.89\00:03:22.31 Harbert Hills Academy is a diverse campus 00:03:22.34\00:03:25.26 with our staff as well as students. 00:03:25.29\00:03:27.50 The fact that we're able to issue I-20s means 00:03:27.53\00:03:31.07 that we have student's here from various cultures. 00:03:31.10\00:03:34.46 They have learned from each other, 00:03:34.49\00:03:35.80 they feed off of each other. 00:03:35.83\00:03:37.14 They grow, they learn about other cultures and get excited 00:03:37.17\00:03:40.20 about visiting other cultures as a result of that. 00:03:40.23\00:03:43.42 My favorite part for being here 00:03:43.45\00:03:45.75 is you get to have different friends from around the world. 00:03:45.78\00:03:50.20 It's really cool having people from other countries 00:03:50.23\00:03:52.49 'cause you get to learn a little bit about their culture 00:03:52.52\00:03:55.07 and you get to share a little bit of our culture. 00:03:55.10\00:03:58.26 We go- play basketball, play soccer, 00:03:58.29\00:04:01.31 and some other games called benteng, 00:04:01.34\00:04:03.87 it's more like a database but it's from Indonesia. 00:04:03.90\00:04:06.24 You know here in the US we're often centered on our own, 00:04:06.27\00:04:09.27 you know, little bubble that we have. 00:04:09.30\00:04:11.54 And so the students that come here will get a view 00:04:11.57\00:04:13.63 that they would not have gotten otherwise. 00:04:13.66\00:04:15.91 I wish that when I was in high school, 00:04:15.94\00:04:18.23 I was in a more multi-cultural environment than I was 00:04:18.26\00:04:22.06 because I see the benefits of it here. 00:04:22.09\00:04:24.49 But the school, you know, it's small 00:04:24.52\00:04:26.31 and for me I think it's a good thing 00:04:26.34\00:04:28.24 because if it's a big school 00:04:28.27\00:04:30.45 than there's a lot of distraction from everything. 00:04:30.48\00:04:33.38 We're sitting on 500 acres, 00:04:33.41\00:04:35.38 that we've got a good buffer zone around us 00:04:35.41\00:04:37.73 so that we don't have a lot of distractions here. 00:04:37.76\00:04:39.61 It's peaceful, it's quiet and so student can focus 00:04:39.64\00:04:43.27 little bit better way in harmony with the Lord. 00:04:43.30\00:04:45.52 Here nature is all around us. 00:04:45.55\00:04:48.43 For our Friday night Vespers 00:04:48.46\00:04:49.82 we have a number of programs 00:04:49.85\00:04:51.31 over the course of the school year 00:04:51.34\00:04:52.57 we have sacred concerts that we do, 00:04:52.60\00:04:54.68 guest speakers coming in, 00:04:54.71\00:04:56.82 the student led week a prayer. 00:04:56.85\00:04:58.92 We have a large choir and the small choir. 00:04:58.95\00:05:00.43 And the small choir is like the group that 00:05:00.46\00:05:03.56 just to go to different churches and minister, 00:05:03.59\00:05:05.95 do singing, the ensemble to, 00:05:05.98\00:05:08.47 it's really neat having other people that 00:05:08.50\00:05:10.46 play the same instrument and just uplifting each other. 00:05:10.49\00:05:13.96 The young people are here to serve. 00:05:13.99\00:05:16.19 If someone in our community has a need 00:05:16.22\00:05:18.31 and we get a phone call we go to serve. 00:05:18.34\00:05:21.17 Last year we went down and helped 00:05:21.20\00:05:22.63 when the tornadoes hit Alabama. 00:05:22.66\00:05:24.60 It was devastating over there. 00:05:24.63\00:05:25.92 We saw people crying and their house is gone and, 00:05:25.95\00:05:28.97 and then you have the other people that 00:05:29.00\00:05:30.76 saying this is a test from God we can- 00:05:30.79\00:05:33.38 we'll be stronger by that. 00:05:33.41\00:05:35.65 We do mission trips giving young people an opportunity 00:05:35.68\00:05:39.54 to serve in other countries. 00:05:39.57\00:05:41.02 We've done evangelism with the young people, 00:05:41.05\00:05:43.30 traveled and let them be a part 00:05:43.33\00:05:45.75 of presenting a series of meetings 00:05:45.78\00:05:47.97 and presenting the health parks 00:05:48.00\00:05:49.44 and seeing people come to Christ through their efforts. 00:05:49.47\00:05:52.60 You know, we have the academic, 00:05:52.63\00:05:54.13 social, spiritual and we have the work program. 00:05:54.16\00:05:57.01 The council that we have talks about a work education program 00:05:57.04\00:06:00.29 that involves spending about half the day in the classroom 00:06:00.32\00:06:02.98 and about half a day 00:06:03.01\00:06:04.39 in a vocational practical work setting. 00:06:04.42\00:06:07.79 We just take the message from Spirit of Prophecy that 00:06:07.82\00:06:11.26 we should all learn hands-on and have hands-on experience. 00:06:11.29\00:06:14.87 We have a 49 bed intermediate care nursing home facility. 00:06:14.90\00:06:18.14 We have a farm, a bakery and those are the things 00:06:18.17\00:06:21.46 that really give the young people an opportunity 00:06:21.49\00:06:23.73 to earn part of their tuition. 00:06:23.76\00:06:26.49 With the vocation classes their hands are moving 00:06:26.52\00:06:29.05 they are involved in things and woodworking class, 00:06:29.08\00:06:32.64 they are sanding, they are cutting, 00:06:32.67\00:06:34.05 they are sawing. 00:06:34.08\00:06:35.44 This past year we added a brand new vocation class, 00:06:35.47\00:06:38.74 which was the digital photography class 00:06:38.77\00:06:40.67 and it's been of tremendous boast to the students moral. 00:06:40.70\00:06:43.70 We do macro shooting and portrait shooting 00:06:43.73\00:06:46.73 and our students learn to how to work with lighting 00:06:46.76\00:06:49.36 and auto mechanics. 00:06:49.39\00:06:50.88 They're working on cars, they are underneath the car, 00:06:50.91\00:06:53.13 they are under the hood and radio broadcasting class, 00:06:53.16\00:06:56.63 they are on the air, they're working with mikes. 00:06:56.66\00:06:58.84 We have a 50,000 watt FM radio station, 00:06:58.87\00:07:02.50 that's one of the ways that we connect with our community. 00:07:02.53\00:07:06.06 Harbert Hills Academy is in a process 00:07:06.09\00:07:08.86 of development right now. 00:07:08.89\00:07:11.55 There's a project ongoing for upgrading our boy's dorm. 00:07:11.58\00:07:14.56 We're also in the process of building a new girls dormitory. 00:07:14.59\00:07:17.76 It's about $1.2 million project. 00:07:17.79\00:07:20.33 We have a tornado shelter that we're building 00:07:20.36\00:07:22.78 into the building in the basement. 00:07:22.81\00:07:24.49 It will be a safe home away from home environment. 00:07:24.52\00:07:27.47 We're actually working right now on a project 00:07:27.50\00:07:29.71 to build an addition to our bakery 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.83 were we can process the food that we grow 00:07:32.86\00:07:35.26 over the course of the year. 00:07:35.29\00:07:37.28 And we're on a mission to do it one step at a time 00:07:37.31\00:07:39.76 and allow the Lord to lead us and guide us along the way. 00:07:39.79\00:07:43.08 One of the things that I would challenge 00:07:43.11\00:07:46.35 is to consider becoming involved in this kind of ministry. 00:07:46.38\00:07:50.75 We are in need of teachers, instructors, 00:07:50.78\00:07:53.49 who understand God's council 00:07:53.52\00:07:55.29 and who are willing to put their life in God's hands. 00:07:55.32\00:08:00.71 One of the methods that Harbert Hills Academy uses 00:08:00.74\00:08:03.87 to engage their students in the battle of life 00:08:03.90\00:08:07.74 is to teach them the principal of service. 00:08:07.77\00:08:11.63 There are 49 bed nursing home facility 00:08:11.66\00:08:15.08 located on the campus provides an excellent opportunity 00:08:15.11\00:08:19.27 for the young students to minister 00:08:19.30\00:08:21.50 to those that are older and are in need. 00:08:21.53\00:08:24.72 This helps teach them 00:08:24.75\00:08:26.22 what should be their true priority in life. 00:08:26.25\00:08:31.22 My brother Randall Dickman is our current administrator 00:08:31.25\00:08:34.53 for the Harbert Hills Academy Nursing Home. 00:08:34.56\00:08:37.01 I've been working here as administrator since 1992, 00:08:37.04\00:08:40.23 and I went to school here when I was a young person. 00:08:40.26\00:08:42.79 I probably didn't notice as much of the privilege of working here 00:08:42.82\00:08:45.90 back then as I do now, 00:08:45.93\00:08:47.69 but through the years I've really seen that 00:08:47.72\00:08:49.88 it's a privilege to work for God 00:08:49.91\00:08:51.95 and not only work here at the nursing home, 00:08:51.98\00:08:54.30 I teach at Harbert Hills Academy. 00:08:54.33\00:08:56.81 We have our own CNA training program here 00:08:56.84\00:08:59.37 so most of our graduates when they leave 00:08:59.40\00:09:01.56 in addition to having their diploma, 00:09:01.59\00:09:03.46 they are also certified CNA's. 00:09:03.49\00:09:06.59 When I first came 00:09:06.62\00:09:08.04 I worked in the general departments like housekeeping 00:09:08.07\00:09:10.99 and I found that working with the residents 00:09:11.02\00:09:12.88 was an opportunity I can take 00:09:12.91\00:09:14.72 because I love interacting with people, 00:09:14.75\00:09:16.11 so I found that that would be a good way to give back 00:09:16.14\00:09:17.99 to this community and also give back to God 00:09:18.02\00:09:20.01 what He has offered me. 00:09:20.04\00:09:21.19 It makes me feel good to help others. 00:09:21.22\00:09:24.40 I sometimes sing to them, 00:09:24.43\00:09:26.12 I tell them some jokes and then I hear them laughing 00:09:26.15\00:09:28.30 and I just love seeing a smile on their faces. 00:09:28.33\00:09:31.21 We're going to see Lord come one of these days 00:09:31.24\00:09:34.17 and what a special thing to see a baptism in a nursing home. 00:09:34.20\00:09:37.25 That's something you probably will not see very often. 00:09:37.28\00:09:40.00 Well, on opinion we were in debate re-baptized 00:09:40.03\00:09:43.08 for several years but I just decided right now to do it. 00:09:43.11\00:09:48.31 You know there's not a lot of facilities who would 00:09:48.34\00:09:50.55 make it available for residents to be baptize if they wanted. 00:09:50.58\00:09:53.76 Time and time again I've seen them go out of their way 00:09:53.79\00:09:56.68 and do extra things to make our residents feel at home. 00:09:56.71\00:10:02.09 People know that when they come 00:10:02.12\00:10:03.60 to Harbert Hills Academy Nursing Home 00:10:03.63\00:10:05.50 the care they will receive is top notch 00:10:05.53\00:10:08.09 and it's not just a technical care it's a loving care. 00:10:08.12\00:10:12.89 It's really one of the challenges in today's world 00:10:12.92\00:10:15.34 for young people to take up the vision 00:10:15.37\00:10:17.68 of what it means to really serve, 00:10:17.71\00:10:20.17 setting yourself aside and saying okay Lord, 00:10:20.20\00:10:22.47 You just do whatever you want to do. 00:10:22.50\00:10:24.91 The staff at Harbert Hills Academy is dedicated 00:10:24.94\00:10:28.73 to equipping the students become victors 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.49 in the battle of life. 00:10:31.52\00:10:34.18 Their aim is to exceed the expectations 00:10:34.21\00:10:37.60 of both parents and students, 00:10:37.63\00:10:39.69 by not only providing a well-rounded education 00:10:39.72\00:10:44.00 but more importantly introducing the students to Jesus Christ. 00:10:44.03\00:10:49.42 In a moment we'll visit another OCI ministry 00:10:49.45\00:10:53.19 located in a different part of the world yet engaged 00:10:53.22\00:10:57.19 in the same great controversy. 00:10:57.22\00:11:01.99 Pain, suffering and hopelessness are everywhere we look. 00:11:02.02\00:11:06.61 As Christians we know that the ultimate answer is Jesus. 00:11:06.64\00:11:09.72 We're called to bring people to Him 00:11:09.75\00:11:12.49 as well as to share His love in practical ways. 00:11:12.52\00:11:15.73 Can you imagine the difference it would make 00:11:15.76\00:11:18.21 if every church member did all that we can to share our hope. 00:11:18.24\00:11:22.95 That's what OCI is all about, 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.96 laypeople using their skills to reach their communities 00:11:24.99\00:11:29.14 and bring change, 00:11:29.17\00:11:30.63 weather through lifestyle centers or schools, 00:11:30.66\00:11:33.51 restaurants or clinics the methods are diverse 00:11:33.54\00:11:36.85 but the goal is the same, 00:11:36.88\00:11:38.59 to bring hope and healing to our dying world. 00:11:38.62\00:11:41.78 In order for this work to continue prayer, 00:11:41.81\00:11:45.20 workers, and funding are all necessary. 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.88 When you support OCI, 00:11:47.91\00:11:49.96 you support the work of more than 80 ministries 00:11:49.99\00:11:53.13 around the world. 00:11:53.16\00:11:54.77 For more information about how you can be become involved 00:11:54.80\00:11:57.61 please contact us anytime. 00:11:57.64\00:11:59.98 A small but dynamic OCI Ministry 00:12:03.16\00:12:05.95 that is having a large impact is Mukuyu Outreach 00:12:05.98\00:12:10.41 located in the country of Zambia, 00:12:10.44\00:12:13.05 situated on the banks of the Zambezi River 00:12:13.08\00:12:16.02 this ministry was born out of sorrow and tragedy. 00:12:16.05\00:12:19.75 Yet under God's blessing, 00:12:19.78\00:12:21.24 is having a far-reaching effect into the communities 00:12:21.27\00:12:24.72 in this remote region. 00:12:24.75\00:12:26.63 Mukuyu is the Tonga word for fig tree. 00:12:26.66\00:12:31.56 This large fig tree attract the attention of Johann Myburg 00:12:31.59\00:12:35.87 as he was coming down the Zambezi River. 00:12:35.90\00:12:39.01 Johan had a vision of making a difference 00:12:39.04\00:12:42.10 in the lives of the people in this remote community. 00:12:42.13\00:12:45.84 Unfortunately Johann was tragically killed 00:12:45.87\00:12:49.11 by an elephant on this property. 00:12:49.14\00:12:51.19 However his brother Hein picked up the torch 00:12:51.22\00:12:55.15 that Johann has laid down. 00:12:55.18\00:12:57.29 Hain and his wife Melissa have extended Johan's original vision 00:12:57.32\00:13:02.20 and are making a huge impact in this world region. 00:13:02.23\00:13:08.83 Well, in 2002 my older brother moved to this spot. 00:13:08.86\00:13:13.70 He was doing work with Riverside Farm Institute 00:13:13.73\00:13:16.45 doing food distribution and while in the area 00:13:16.48\00:13:20.00 he saw the need of the people who live around here. 00:13:20.03\00:13:22.61 So we settled here and he started with basically nothing. 00:13:22.64\00:13:26.93 He got people from overseas to help do evangelistic series 00:13:26.96\00:13:30.36 with the help of OCI here. 00:13:30.39\00:13:32.02 He managed to put up two churches in the area 00:13:32.05\00:13:34.35 and eventually a third one and so he was only here 00:13:34.38\00:13:37.86 for three years before he passed away 00:13:37.89\00:13:39.76 in a very tragic accident 00:13:39.79\00:13:41.15 when he was attacked by an elephant bull. 00:13:41.18\00:13:45.63 That was in August of 2005 00:13:45.66\00:13:47.64 and at the time that happened I was living in the UK. 00:13:47.67\00:13:51.42 Unfortunately while I was living there 00:13:51.45\00:13:53.17 my spiritual life was in decline. 00:13:53.20\00:13:55.95 I had a very comfortable life 00:13:55.98\00:13:58.74 and I talked with the Lord often and I asked Him to help me 00:13:58.77\00:14:02.31 'cause I knew I didn't want to go anywhere else, 00:14:02.34\00:14:04.60 I didn't want to change 00:14:04.63\00:14:05.66 but I knew I was heading for trouble 00:14:05.69\00:14:06.97 and I asked Him to put change in my heart. 00:14:07.00\00:14:09.75 Soon after that, that's when the accident happened. 00:14:09.78\00:14:14.35 And coming here for the funeral 00:14:14.38\00:14:16.08 and seeing the reaction of the people at the funeral, 00:14:16.11\00:14:19.35 the love they had for Johann and seeing first hand 00:14:19.38\00:14:23.76 what he kept busy with made me understand 00:14:23.79\00:14:25.87 or realize that I was living a life, 00:14:25.90\00:14:28.52 it was just selfish 00:14:28.55\00:14:29.97 and when the idea came in my mind of moving here 00:14:30.00\00:14:33.82 at first I didn't want to know anything about it 00:14:33.85\00:14:36.46 but like I said the Holy Spirit spoke with me constantly 00:14:36.49\00:14:39.77 for a couple weeks and eventually 00:14:39.80\00:14:41.96 when I made the decision to come out here to Mukuyu, 00:14:41.99\00:14:45.44 honestly that's the time in my life 00:14:45.47\00:14:47.07 when I had the most awesome peace 00:14:47.10\00:14:49.30 and conforming to the will of the Lord that's, 00:14:49.33\00:14:52.67 that's the most awesome thing that I could have done. 00:14:52.70\00:14:55.69 I think the Lord has especially prepared me for this 00:14:55.72\00:14:58.05 because when I came here I was very wary of everything 00:14:58.08\00:15:01.75 and but as I started living here 00:15:01.78\00:15:04.74 the Lord just helped me 00:15:04.77\00:15:06.75 to accept everything that's around here 00:15:06.78\00:15:08.40 and to learn that these things 00:15:08.43\00:15:09.58 that had happened is not of His doing, 00:15:09.61\00:15:12.09 but it's of the devils doing 00:15:12.12\00:15:13.29 because he doesn't wants' us to be here. 00:15:13.32\00:15:14.88 And we need to move forward 00:15:14.91\00:15:16.12 and we cannot look back on the past. 00:15:16.15\00:15:20.61 The people that live in this area, 00:15:20.64\00:15:22.88 the biggest problem for them is they have a lack of Christ. 00:15:22.91\00:15:25.77 They don't know Christ. 00:15:25.80\00:15:26.87 They don't know how to reach Christ. 00:15:26.90\00:15:28.91 They don't know that He's there for them. 00:15:28.94\00:15:31.19 I've seen specific examples of the people around us here, 00:15:31.22\00:15:34.41 when they meet Christ 00:15:34.44\00:15:35.47 and they let Jesus into their lives 00:15:35.50\00:15:37.19 they soften up from the hard people 00:15:37.22\00:15:39.33 that used be to people who actually start cleaning up 00:15:39.36\00:15:42.16 and looking of their children 00:15:42.19\00:15:44.00 and making their homes look nicer 00:15:44.03\00:15:46.03 and just improving their lives just through knowing Christ. 00:15:46.06\00:15:49.45 I was lucky enough to be 00:15:49.48\00:15:50.74 in an Adventist primary school as a kid. 00:15:50.77\00:15:53.68 And I look back now and I know that, 00:15:53.71\00:15:55.72 that had a huge impact on my life. 00:15:55.75\00:15:58.11 It helped to, together with the Christian upbringing 00:15:58.14\00:16:00.73 we had in our home, 00:16:00.76\00:16:02.34 it formed a solid base and we really want to give 00:16:02.37\00:16:05.41 that to the small kids in this area as well. 00:16:05.44\00:16:08.62 We're trying to reach out to the people here, 00:16:08.65\00:16:10.92 bring the Gospel to them, 00:16:10.95\00:16:12.22 bringing the truth and reaching out in education 00:16:12.25\00:16:15.12 and any other way we can help them to be there for them. 00:16:15.15\00:16:20.73 The further one goes from the tarmac 00:16:20.76\00:16:22.68 and the centers of population the greater the decrease 00:16:22.71\00:16:26.91 in the level of education. 00:16:26.94\00:16:29.00 Out here in rural Zambia, 00:16:29.03\00:16:30.96 the children face a daunting task to get a good education. 00:16:30.99\00:16:34.85 Some of them have to walk four to six miles 00:16:34.88\00:16:37.91 to get to the nearest school. 00:16:37.94\00:16:39.96 In the book Education, Ellen White tells us 00:16:39.99\00:16:43.20 that the work of redemption and education are one 00:16:43.23\00:16:47.75 and that the foundation for both is Jesus Christ. 00:16:47.78\00:16:52.21 Hein and Melissa are endeavoring to lay in this community 00:16:52.24\00:16:55.82 a foundation that these young children 00:16:55.85\00:16:58.89 could get an education that will lead them 00:16:58.92\00:17:02.06 to their Savior Jesus Christ. 00:17:02.09\00:17:05.73 At the moment they have just one school in the whole area 00:17:05.76\00:17:08.40 that we are in and in winter time 00:17:08.43\00:17:10.05 the kids can't go to the school 00:17:10.08\00:17:11.45 because the elephants come. 00:17:11.48\00:17:13.13 During the dry season there's elephants everyway, 00:17:13.16\00:17:15.50 so the kids can't go to school, 00:17:15.53\00:17:17.06 the older ones managed to make the way out there, 00:17:17.09\00:17:19.05 although its dangers but the younger kids 00:17:19.08\00:17:20.75 they just don't go to school. 00:17:20.78\00:17:22.29 And because of our personal experience with elephants 00:17:22.32\00:17:24.67 in our family the death that we had in our family 00:17:24.70\00:17:26.47 we have a burden for that and it's sad for us to see 00:17:26.50\00:17:29.30 that kids will have a lack of education 00:17:29.33\00:17:31.96 because of elephants. 00:17:31.99\00:17:33.46 And so we've put up one roof 00:17:33.49\00:17:35.10 that's the first structure that will form 00:17:35.13\00:17:37.17 the lower basic school which is the first four grades, 00:17:37.20\00:17:39.63 which is in the village, 00:17:39.66\00:17:40.69 what we still need for that school is three more classrooms 00:17:40.72\00:17:44.46 plus an office building and then four houses for teachers. 00:17:44.49\00:17:47.52 Well, the orphanage we started in 2007, 00:17:52.82\00:17:55.81 it was idea that me and Hein got together, 00:17:55.84\00:17:59.04 so we raised some money and we build the orphanage. 00:17:59.07\00:18:01.47 We can take in 12 children 00:18:01.50\00:18:03.16 but for now we've got eight orphans. 00:18:03.19\00:18:05.05 Boys and girls will get a mother that will be living in the house 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.89 and she'll be the one to look after them to raise them 00:18:07.92\00:18:12.46 and we also want to start the orphanage 00:18:12.49\00:18:14.45 to bring some education that will be close to the school 00:18:14.48\00:18:16.55 that we will be building. 00:18:16.58\00:18:19.04 The orphans outside that they are staying 00:18:19.07\00:18:20.92 with the relatives or friends 00:18:20.95\00:18:22.55 they don't get the chance to be going to school 00:18:22.58\00:18:25.20 or learn to be self-supporting 00:18:25.23\00:18:26.69 because usually when they stay with the relatives 00:18:26.72\00:18:28.51 or friends they just use them as workers. 00:18:28.54\00:18:30.69 So if we can start the orphanage 00:18:30.72\00:18:32.06 they can grow up in the right way 00:18:32.09\00:18:33.62 by learning things about the Lord 00:18:33.65\00:18:35.42 and get proper education and learn to be self-supportive. 00:18:35.45\00:18:38.43 Obviously there are many well-educated women 00:18:41.34\00:18:44.10 in the country of Zambia. 00:18:44.13\00:18:45.61 However in the rural areas women face tremendous challenges 00:18:45.64\00:18:50.26 in getting the education necessary. 00:18:50.29\00:18:52.49 In June of 2010 Melissa started the Nanyanga women's Club. 00:18:52.52\00:18:58.29 The purpose of this club was to give some of the women 00:18:58.32\00:19:00.89 in this local region some skills 00:19:00.92\00:19:03.73 that would improve their standard of living. 00:19:03.76\00:19:06.80 Its part of the vision that 00:19:06.83\00:19:08.36 Hein and Melissa have of permeating this region 00:19:08.39\00:19:12.07 with a higher educational standard 00:19:12.10\00:19:14.18 than it's currently here. 00:19:14.21\00:19:17.14 Some of them came to me and they said 00:19:17.17\00:19:18.48 if I could do something for them in the village, 00:19:18.51\00:19:20.74 so I decided I will start by teaching them 00:19:20.77\00:19:23.15 how to do tailoring. 00:19:23.18\00:19:24.47 So we started off by just knitting 00:19:24.50\00:19:26.96 and doing some needle work 00:19:26.99\00:19:29.00 and eventually we got donated two sewing machines. 00:19:29.03\00:19:33.19 And now I'm starting to teach them 00:19:33.22\00:19:36.08 how to make clothes 00:19:36.11\00:19:37.64 and then I've started with Bible classes with them 00:19:37.67\00:19:39.75 I'm telling them Bible stories and Bible lessons 00:19:39.78\00:19:42.91 and I just recently started teaching them English. 00:19:42.94\00:19:45.69 In the beginning they came- 00:19:54.48\00:19:55.51 they couldn't speak English, 00:19:55.54\00:19:56.92 but some of them can pick up English words now. 00:19:56.95\00:19:59.40 They've learned a lot of things. 00:19:59.43\00:20:00.48 They were lot of women that came 00:20:00.51\00:20:01.54 they couldn't even work on the sewing machine, 00:20:01.57\00:20:03.09 they couldn't even do any knitting. 00:20:03.12\00:20:05.22 And we've showed them and within a few months 00:20:05.25\00:20:07.49 they've learned something new which they never could have done 00:20:07.52\00:20:09.62 and every day they are learning something new. 00:20:09.65\00:20:12.33 In our group we've got 19 people. 00:20:12.36\00:20:15.18 Before we started our program we pray 00:20:15.21\00:20:18.65 and we also have a Bible reading. 00:20:18.68\00:20:22.85 People they gave us 00:20:22.88\00:20:24.22 two sewing machines from America. 00:20:24.25\00:20:26.91 So these days we're knitting by hand, 00:20:26.94\00:20:29.11 we're doing by the machine. 00:20:29.14\00:20:32.80 Well, the products that they make 00:20:32.83\00:20:34.16 we try to sell some in village 00:20:34.19\00:20:36.30 and half of the money goes to the ladies 00:20:36.33\00:20:38.54 and the other bit goes to wards, our groups, 00:20:38.57\00:20:41.15 so we can buy more things and if there's a little bit left 00:20:41.18\00:20:44.33 we put side by side for the orphanage. 00:20:44.36\00:20:46.22 We raise money for the orphanage. 00:20:46.25\00:20:48.14 We also do the tithing of the Lord first of all. 00:20:48.17\00:20:52.67 At the moment close to be- we brought the orphan home. 00:20:52.70\00:20:55.84 We've got one roof setup. 00:20:55.87\00:20:59.74 This building once finished, 00:20:59.77\00:21:01.35 we intend to use as an older age feeding center. 00:21:01.38\00:21:03.70 There's quite a few old people in the village 00:21:03.73\00:21:05.27 and unfortunately in this specific culture 00:21:05.30\00:21:09.41 the old people aren't always looked after 00:21:09.44\00:21:11.94 as well as they could be and we've seen many old ladies 00:21:11.97\00:21:15.39 still having to farm their own corn 00:21:15.42\00:21:17.47 while they can barely walk. 00:21:17.50\00:21:19.18 Old ladies having to cut their own firewood 00:21:19.21\00:21:21.22 while they hardly able to carry it 00:21:21.25\00:21:23.59 and so we were really touched with that need 00:21:23.62\00:21:26.57 and we intend to have that community center 00:21:26.60\00:21:29.30 not only as a training center 00:21:29.33\00:21:30.81 for the ladies with the sewing classes 00:21:30.84\00:21:32.51 but to have warm cooked meal 00:21:32.54\00:21:34.53 ready for the old people once a day, 00:21:34.56\00:21:36.82 just to help with their basic nutrition 00:21:36.85\00:21:38.90 and at the same time we intend to bring 00:21:38.93\00:21:41.68 one of our Bible workers in the area 00:21:41.71\00:21:43.98 while they're eating he can reach out to them. 00:21:44.01\00:21:47.85 In remote areas of the country like this 00:21:47.88\00:21:49.95 good medical treatment is a very hard to come by. 00:21:49.98\00:21:52.87 Along the river there's a variety of threats. 00:21:52.90\00:21:55.55 There's the danger of crocodile and hippo attacks, 00:21:55.58\00:21:58.86 malaria and bilharzia are prevalent. 00:21:58.89\00:22:01.81 Even this simplest medical situation 00:22:01.84\00:22:04.64 can develop into emergency without good medical treatment. 00:22:04.67\00:22:08.68 The local people find it difficult 00:22:08.71\00:22:10.71 to get this good treatment. 00:22:10.74\00:22:12.68 But Hein and Melissa have developed a way 00:22:12.71\00:22:14.74 to bring in the treatment to the individuals, 00:22:14.77\00:22:17.35 the families, the communities 00:22:17.38\00:22:18.94 living along the Zambezi River. 00:22:18.97\00:22:22.38 Because of a lack of education this area for so long, 00:22:22.41\00:22:26.14 it's sometimes very difficult to reach out to people 00:22:26.17\00:22:28.49 on an intellectual level. 00:22:28.52\00:22:30.65 What really works well and the spirit of prophecy 00:22:30.68\00:22:33.08 is very clear on that as well is that, 00:22:33.11\00:22:35.77 to use the example that Jesus did 00:22:35.80\00:22:37.10 and He met the physical needs of the people 00:22:37.13\00:22:40.07 that listened to Him. 00:22:40.10\00:22:41.13 We had lot of ladies that has been going into labor 00:22:44.78\00:22:48.03 which we took to the hospital. 00:22:48.06\00:22:49.63 We actually had one baby that was born on our vehicle. 00:22:49.66\00:22:52.92 And the most exciting thing 00:22:52.95\00:22:55.95 that we are having for future is the medical boat, 00:22:55.98\00:22:58.69 the closest hospital is Chirundu 00:22:58.72\00:23:00.29 which is about two hours drive from here. 00:23:00.32\00:23:03.24 It was a dream of my brother to have a medical boat 00:23:03.27\00:23:07.52 and recently we managed to get the funding for this boat. 00:23:07.55\00:23:10.71 We're just now waiting for the official approval 00:23:10.74\00:23:14.17 from the government 00:23:14.20\00:23:15.23 so we can run the boat as a medical service provider. 00:23:15.26\00:23:17.84 And the function of that boat will be 00:23:17.87\00:23:19.82 to run up and down this Zambezi. 00:23:19.85\00:23:21.33 We've got a stretch of about 25 miles. 00:23:21.36\00:23:24.57 Things that we will be able to help the people 00:23:24.60\00:23:26.82 with are things like bilharzia and intestinal parasites. 00:23:26.85\00:23:30.26 Then malaria is a very big problem here, 00:23:30.29\00:23:33.12 especially in the kids. 00:23:33.15\00:23:34.42 AIDS is also a big problem. 00:23:34.45\00:23:36.44 And then there's things like 00:23:36.47\00:23:38.02 skin infections and chest infections. 00:23:38.05\00:23:41.43 We've come across quite a few people with TB in the area 00:23:41.46\00:23:44.09 and they just do not get to the hospital, 00:23:44.12\00:23:46.03 so those are things that we need to tackle with the medical boat. 00:23:46.06\00:23:51.54 The boat's name is Bakwesu. 00:23:51.57\00:23:53.45 The person that helped to fund the boat, 00:23:53.48\00:23:56.02 he's a gentleman that lost his own brother 00:23:56.05\00:23:59.31 maybe two years ago. 00:23:59.34\00:24:01.59 And after hearing our story he came to me and said 00:24:01.62\00:24:05.45 he'll give the funding 00:24:05.48\00:24:07.07 and he thinks it might be a good idea 00:24:07.10\00:24:08.58 if we run this boat as a working memorial 00:24:08.61\00:24:11.57 to both of our brothers. 00:24:11.60\00:24:12.90 And he said why don't we name it Brothers in the local language? 00:24:12.93\00:24:16.61 And so I found out what the Tonga word for brothers is 00:24:16.64\00:24:19.60 and it turned out to be Bakwesu. 00:24:19.63\00:24:22.34 But in the Tonga language the words aren't as absolute 00:24:22.37\00:24:25.20 as the English language, 00:24:25.23\00:24:27.08 it means brothers and sisters, 00:24:27.11\00:24:28.81 it means members of the same community 00:24:28.84\00:24:30.71 and it means good friends. 00:24:30.74\00:24:33.09 And so the name for Bakwesu, I think it's quite fitting 00:24:33.12\00:24:35.98 and we are praying that that will have the, 00:24:36.01\00:24:38.32 the same effect to be friends to the people around us. 00:24:38.35\00:24:40.76 When we first got here 00:24:45.07\00:24:46.68 it was difficult to find a way to support ourselves. 00:24:46.71\00:24:50.05 We came here with very little 00:24:50.08\00:24:51.80 and we were really trusting on the Lord to supply our needs. 00:24:51.83\00:24:55.48 We've got a beautiful piece of land 00:24:55.51\00:24:57.59 with beautiful soil that we can use for planting stuff 00:24:57.62\00:25:00.70 and we have unlimited water obviously 00:25:00.73\00:25:02.16 from Zambezi River but we do not have electricity. 00:25:02.19\00:25:05.10 What we do have even outside of our piece of property 00:25:05.13\00:25:08.59 is unlimited open grazing. 00:25:08.62\00:25:11.36 And so when we got here my brother had 20 sheep 00:25:11.39\00:25:14.33 that he used to keep around the house 00:25:14.36\00:25:15.95 and so we took these 20 sheep 00:25:15.98\00:25:17.59 and I put in all my effort to keep them healthy 00:25:17.62\00:25:20.89 and keep them producing. 00:25:20.92\00:25:22.49 Six years later we have more than 500 hundred sheep. 00:25:22.52\00:25:25.70 The Lord has blessed this little enterprise and eventually 00:25:25.73\00:25:29.60 when we reach higher numbers it'll be able to help supply 00:25:29.63\00:25:33.05 towards the needs of the orphans and the community center. 00:25:33.08\00:25:36.06 There're so many things that we want to do here 00:25:36.09\00:25:37.68 but we don't have the funding. 00:25:37.71\00:25:39.58 And in the last year things have been going better, 00:25:39.61\00:25:41.93 we've had people supporting us to help us to build the things 00:25:41.96\00:25:44.89 and to get things ready. 00:25:44.92\00:25:45.95 But like the orphanage we did in 2007 00:25:45.98\00:25:48.73 and we can't finish it because we don't have funding for that. 00:25:48.76\00:25:51.52 The school and the community center is the same thing, 00:25:51.55\00:25:54.14 we've had it there for one year now. 00:25:54.17\00:25:56.18 So I think that is the biggest challenge. 00:25:56.21\00:25:57.72 We want to finish the work for the Lord, 00:25:57.75\00:25:59.45 but we don't have enough funding to finish all the things 00:25:59.48\00:26:01.76 that needs to be done here. 00:26:01.79\00:26:04.70 As you can see where we live, 00:26:04.73\00:26:05.94 we're so isolated from not even 00:26:05.97\00:26:08.44 other OCI members in the states all around the world 00:26:08.47\00:26:11.22 but just from our neighbors. 00:26:11.25\00:26:13.34 So it's very easy to start feeling 00:26:13.37\00:26:15.69 that you're alone in the world, 00:26:15.72\00:26:17.80 especially with the work that we do, 00:26:17.83\00:26:19.71 it comes with a special set of challenges. 00:26:19.74\00:26:22.33 And I can say that since we've joined OCI the contact 00:26:22.36\00:26:25.36 that we've had with other ministries not only in Africa 00:26:25.39\00:26:27.84 but around the world removes that feeling of total isolation 00:26:27.87\00:26:32.21 because you now meet people 00:26:32.24\00:26:33.37 who have the same challenges as you. 00:26:33.40\00:26:35.65 You are able to talk with them, 00:26:35.68\00:26:37.09 there's experienced people that can give you advice on things 00:26:37.12\00:26:40.38 that they've already encountered many years before. 00:26:40.41\00:26:43.41 And so that's a massive native support 00:26:43.44\00:26:45.64 that that we feel we, we can't go without. 00:26:45.67\00:26:49.35 I don't think you have to be qualified 00:26:49.38\00:26:51.05 or cut out to be a missionary. 00:26:51.08\00:26:52.96 I think all of us can be missionaries. 00:26:52.99\00:26:54.66 Even in your local town, maybe if you're working, 00:26:54.69\00:26:58.78 everywhere, everybody needs to be a missionary. 00:26:58.81\00:27:00.98 Tell the Lord that you're willing 00:27:01.01\00:27:02.21 to do His work and He will lead you 00:27:02.24\00:27:04.17 and you will see how your life will change. 00:27:04.20\00:27:07.20 All over the world remote communities struggle 00:27:07.23\00:27:10.81 with basic survival needs. 00:27:10.84\00:27:13.23 Jesus said, "Whatsoever you have done 00:27:13.26\00:27:15.95 for the least of these my brethren, 00:27:15.98\00:27:17.86 you have done it unto me." 00:27:17.89\00:27:20.56 On the banks of the Zambezi River, 00:27:20.59\00:27:22.45 Mukuyu Outreach is endeavoring 00:27:22.48\00:27:24.94 to fulfill the command of Jesus Christ, 00:27:24.97\00:27:28.55 as they educate, heel, feed 00:27:28.58\00:27:32.91 and serve the people in this region, 00:27:32.94\00:27:35.27 they are winning souls to Jesus Christ. 00:27:35.30\00:27:39.03 Wherever you are in the world 00:27:39.06\00:27:41.12 you can have a part in this tremendous ministry. 00:27:41.15\00:27:44.80 Medical volunteers are needed on a short or long-term basis. 00:27:44.83\00:27:50.74 I solicit your prayers for Hein and Melissa 00:27:50.77\00:27:54.12 and your generous support for Mukuyu Outreach. 00:27:54.15\00:27:57.43 To learn more about the worldwide work of OCI 00:28:01.28\00:28:04.92 please
