Every nation, society and culture 00:00:07.66\00:00:10.31 struggles with inequality 00:00:10.34\00:00:12.44 and disparity in social standing. 00:00:12.47\00:00:15.67 But love is a powerful motivator 00:00:15.70\00:00:18.56 to overcome these divisions. 00:00:18.59\00:00:21.69 Today, we will be visiting an OCI Ministry 00:00:21.72\00:00:24.83 that is motivated by love 00:00:24.86\00:00:27.14 to restore harmony to a fractured society. 00:00:27.17\00:00:30.38 Among other things, the Taj Mahal is a testimony 00:00:45.70\00:00:49.40 to the restorative power of love. 00:00:49.43\00:00:52.38 In the 1600s Shah Jahan 00:00:52.41\00:00:55.47 first met his future bride Mumtaj Mahal. 00:00:55.50\00:00:59.73 He lived in the palace, 00:00:59.76\00:01:01.49 she sold goods in the marketplace. 00:01:01.52\00:01:04.42 But even as teenagers, it was as often said, 00:01:04.45\00:01:08.04 love at first sight. 00:01:08.07\00:01:10.20 She became his favorite wife 00:01:10.23\00:01:12.44 even accompanying him on military campaigns. 00:01:12.47\00:01:16.31 When she died in childbirth, the Shah was grief-stricken. 00:01:16.34\00:01:21.16 As a testament to his love for his wife, 00:01:21.19\00:01:23.79 he had the Taj Mahal constructed. 00:01:23.82\00:01:26.48 But more than that, the Shah envisioned 00:01:26.51\00:01:29.11 the Taj as a place of asylum. 00:01:29.14\00:01:31.51 He wrote that, "If the guilty should seek asylum here 00:01:31.54\00:01:35.58 that they would be as one pardoned, 00:01:35.61\00:01:38.03 freed from the guilt of their sin." 00:01:38.06\00:01:41.46 Truly in this world there is only one tomb 00:01:41.49\00:01:45.12 from which flows forgiveness of sin 00:01:45.15\00:01:48.03 and it is an empty tomb, the tomb of Jesus Christ. 00:01:48.06\00:01:52.10 India is a nation with a rich cultural history 00:02:03.01\00:02:06.08 and a very ethnically diverse population. 00:02:06.11\00:02:09.82 Unfortunately, for many years 00:02:09.85\00:02:12.08 the cast system has borne sway in Indian society 00:02:12.11\00:02:16.50 with the Brahmin caste at the pinnacle, 00:02:16.53\00:02:18.91 and the untouchables at the bottom. 00:02:18.94\00:02:21.97 These untouchables where often considered 00:02:22.00\00:02:24.72 disposables by the wider society. 00:02:24.75\00:02:28.26 But this is not unique to the nation of India. 00:02:28.29\00:02:32.26 Nations all around the world segregate 00:02:32.29\00:02:35.21 their population according to wealth, 00:02:35.24\00:02:38.02 social status or power. 00:02:38.05\00:02:41.40 Fortunately, there have been 00:02:41.43\00:02:42.94 many women throughout history 00:02:42.97\00:02:45.08 who have endeavored 00:02:45.11\00:02:46.25 to overthrow these structures and minister to everyone. 00:02:46.28\00:02:51.56 Mother Teresa stands out 00:02:51.59\00:02:53.26 as an iconic figure in India's histories. 00:02:53.29\00:02:57.02 At the age of 18 she was convicted 00:02:57.05\00:02:59.80 with the desire to give her life 00:02:59.83\00:03:01.96 to reach the lowest of the low, the poorest of the poor. 00:03:01.99\00:03:09.91 Living Springs Overseas Missions 00:03:09.94\00:03:12.25 is an OCI ministry 00:03:12.28\00:03:14.06 that has the same spirit of compassion 00:03:14.09\00:03:16.49 to reach out to the poorest of the poor. 00:03:16.52\00:03:19.94 Their aim is to minister to the most vulnerable 00:03:19.97\00:03:22.77 members of the Indian society, 00:03:22.80\00:03:25.26 children who are often neglected, 00:03:25.29\00:03:27.77 abused or cast off by their families. 00:03:27.80\00:03:31.95 Lois and I have been working here in India 00:03:31.98\00:03:34.60 for a little more than 20 years. 00:03:34.63\00:03:37.03 But we first came to India 38 years ago 00:03:37.06\00:03:40.57 and established a couple of orphanages 00:03:40.60\00:03:44.04 and then a couple of Bible seminaries 00:03:44.07\00:03:47.75 where we're training young men and women 00:03:47.78\00:03:50.53 and then we established a midwifery training school here 00:03:50.56\00:03:54.08 for training village midwives. 00:03:54.11\00:03:57.56 One of the things that we've seen 00:03:57.59\00:03:59.11 all along in our work here 00:03:59.14\00:04:01.53 are so many children that have no education, 00:04:01.56\00:04:05.99 many that have no home and even if they have a home, 00:04:06.02\00:04:09.28 even if they have parents, many are drunken parents 00:04:09.31\00:04:13.60 and the children are greatly abused, 00:04:13.63\00:04:16.31 especially the girls are greatly abused. 00:04:16.34\00:04:20.26 Kidnapping is very prominent here 00:04:20.29\00:04:22.49 so as soon they're- they reach their puberty 00:04:22.52\00:04:26.16 they will be married off or they are kidnapped. 00:04:26.19\00:04:30.29 So we had a real burden 00:04:30.32\00:04:32.57 to take some of these children in 00:04:32.60\00:04:34.65 and try to help them and give them an education 00:04:34.68\00:04:38.15 and help them to find Jesus in their life. 00:04:38.18\00:04:41.78 We started off with just a few children 00:04:41.81\00:04:45.98 but it didn't take long 00:04:46.01\00:04:47.44 till everyday they were coming to the door 00:04:47.47\00:04:50.09 bringing orphan children, semi orphaned children 00:04:50.12\00:04:53.48 and some children that have parents 00:04:53.51\00:04:55.26 but have no way to really care for their children. 00:04:55.29\00:04:59.08 So we started taking the children in 00:04:59.11\00:05:02.11 and we have now somewhere around 150 and more children 00:05:02.14\00:05:06.30 and we have total care about them. 00:05:06.33\00:05:08.72 We have to supply their food, 00:05:08.75\00:05:10.96 their clothes everything they have, 00:05:10.99\00:05:13.37 we have to supply for them. 00:05:13.40\00:05:15.18 They have no support from anyone. 00:05:15.21\00:05:17.37 It's a big expense. 00:05:17.40\00:05:18.57 And there's a lot of teachers and a lot of salaries to pay 00:05:18.60\00:05:21.22 and the cloths and the education, 00:05:21.25\00:05:23.47 the books and everything else 00:05:23.50\00:05:24.68 that runs up to a lot of money. 00:05:24.71\00:05:26.87 Our work would be impossible without the donations. 00:05:26.90\00:05:29.62 It would be absolutely impossible. 00:05:29.65\00:05:32.24 And so we've been able to save 00:05:32.27\00:05:33.52 a lot of children in a lot of lives 00:05:33.55\00:05:35.51 with the donations that have come to us 00:05:35.54\00:05:37.89 and we appreciate it so much. 00:05:37.92\00:05:40.70 Uncle Bill, he is such a great man. 00:05:40.73\00:05:43.62 He has struggled very hard to gather 00:05:43.65\00:05:48.14 some money to buy this land 00:05:48.17\00:05:49.87 and provide a school here 00:05:49.90\00:05:51.83 so we can come here and learn about God 00:05:51.86\00:05:55.45 and give us some good education. 00:05:55.48\00:05:57.73 And I hope I can be like Uncle Bill one day 00:05:57.76\00:06:03.03 and help God. 00:06:03.06\00:06:06.23 When I came here I got love from him 00:06:06.26\00:06:10.06 because after my father died 00:06:10.09\00:06:14.28 nobody loved me like him. 00:06:14.31\00:06:17.16 I hug him and he's like my daddy, you know. 00:06:17.19\00:06:19.82 Many of our children have experienced severe traumas. 00:06:24.20\00:06:28.94 I- when I first came there were two boys here 00:06:28.97\00:06:31.73 whose father had been killed by a tiger. 00:06:31.76\00:06:34.77 I think more traumatic 00:06:34.80\00:06:36.35 are parents they have been murdered. 00:06:36.38\00:06:39.49 We have one or two girls they came to us 00:06:40.83\00:06:43.38 almost straight from a brothel at about the age of 13. 00:06:43.41\00:06:48.98 I would say sexual abuse is very, very common 00:06:49.01\00:06:52.58 not spoken about much though. 00:06:52.61\00:06:54.91 The children don't talk about it 00:06:54.94\00:06:56.47 but you can see evidence of it. 00:06:56.50\00:07:00.82 Jesus is the great healer 00:07:00.85\00:07:03.49 and I believe that introducing these hurt children to Him 00:07:03.52\00:07:07.53 will help to heal their wounds. 00:07:07.56\00:07:09.59 I also believe that providing them with 00:07:09.62\00:07:12.68 something that they can do to be a benefit to their society 00:07:12.71\00:07:16.81 and make a better place for their children 00:07:16.84\00:07:20.81 will help them feel better and heal. 00:07:20.84\00:07:25.30 I think that our vocational program is good for that. 00:07:25.33\00:07:28.67 Our girls are learning to sew and to bake 00:07:28.70\00:07:31.70 and do many things. 00:07:31.73\00:07:35.11 The children from the time they are seven years old 00:07:35.14\00:07:38.73 or younger they are learning to wash their own clothes, 00:07:38.76\00:07:41.65 make their own bed, care for their own things 00:07:41.68\00:07:45.73 and older children help the younger ones. 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.41 Everybody just works together as a team. 00:07:48.44\00:07:50.24 Every morning they work together 00:07:50.27\00:07:51.82 to keep the campus clean, it's like a family. 00:07:51.85\00:07:55.06 My friends are like my brothers, sisters. 00:07:55.09\00:07:58.13 This is like my family. 00:07:58.16\00:08:00.32 This has been the greatest joy in my life 00:08:00.35\00:08:02.69 is having all of these children. 00:08:02.72\00:08:05.39 Many of them growing up right with us, 00:08:05.42\00:08:08.11 they're like our own sons and daughters 00:08:08.14\00:08:10.63 they act like our own sons and daughters. 00:08:10.66\00:08:12.96 They love us like they were or own sons and daughters 00:08:12.99\00:08:15.78 and we love them 00:08:15.81\00:08:16.99 as if they were our own sons and daughters. 00:08:17.02\00:08:19.84 I just don't understand why there aren't 00:08:19.87\00:08:21.56 so many more people out 00:08:21.59\00:08:22.87 doing the same thing that we're doing. 00:08:22.90\00:08:24.82 It's the greatest joy in the world. 00:08:24.85\00:08:27.63 It's been really amazing to see 00:08:27.66\00:08:29.84 how much the children have changed. 00:08:29.87\00:08:32.55 They just grown up so much 00:08:32.58\00:08:34.42 and many of my girls are making plans for marriage, 00:08:34.45\00:08:38.80 whishing to be married. 00:08:38.83\00:08:40.64 They start feeling that pressure 00:08:40.67\00:08:42.51 very early actually probably 15, 13. 00:08:42.54\00:08:48.75 So their whole outlook on life is different 00:08:48.78\00:08:53.08 but I see that many of them 00:08:53.11\00:08:55.00 have developed a sense of self-worth 00:08:55.03\00:08:57.43 and they are excited about it. 00:08:57.46\00:09:00.39 Eunice is very special. 00:09:00.42\00:09:04.88 The family was very poor, the father was a hopeless drunk 00:09:04.91\00:09:09.24 her mother was Christian 00:09:09.27\00:09:11.11 but the father sold her to a Muslim family down south. 00:09:11.14\00:09:15.87 We were quite disturbed to say the least. 00:09:15.90\00:09:19.19 We sent the president of our school Springs of Love. 00:09:19.22\00:09:22.09 He contacted the lady who was the go between. 00:09:22.12\00:09:25.25 He spoke and said we want this girl back. 00:09:25.28\00:09:27.72 She was very upset. 00:09:27.75\00:09:29.32 She said you have to pay a redemption price 00:09:29.35\00:09:31.30 is what they call it a redemption price 00:09:31.33\00:09:33.83 and what it cost for getting her back 00:09:33.86\00:09:36.05 with going there and paying to get her back was about $150 00:09:36.08\00:09:40.99 which was more than more than well worth it. 00:09:41.02\00:09:44.45 We were Christian but my father was drinking alcohol 00:09:44.48\00:09:49.06 and so I don't know much 00:09:49.09\00:09:51.21 but I used to go to church 00:09:51.24\00:09:52.46 but not knowing so much about God. 00:09:52.49\00:09:55.12 So after I come here only I came to know about God. 00:09:55.15\00:09:59.19 The value of a child in India depends, 00:09:59.22\00:10:02.14 one thing on their gender, 00:10:02.17\00:10:04.11 of course, the boys are a lot more valued than girls are. 00:10:04.14\00:10:08.48 Some families really love their children 00:10:08.51\00:10:12.70 and really care for them, they mean everything to them. 00:10:12.73\00:10:15.76 In India, if you don't have children 00:10:15.79\00:10:18.47 you're really looked down on as a family. 00:10:18.50\00:10:21.18 There are many children that are from very poor families 00:10:21.21\00:10:25.31 that really have nothing. 00:10:25.34\00:10:27.62 Of course, in the cities they're on the streets 00:10:27.65\00:10:30.30 out in the villages they're in the fields working. 00:10:30.33\00:10:34.91 Children are treated as slaves some of them. 00:10:34.94\00:10:38.92 And the little girls are really abused very badly. 00:10:38.95\00:10:43.59 And so we have had a great desire 00:10:43.62\00:10:46.50 to take these little children 00:10:46.53\00:10:48.13 and put them in a safe environment 00:10:48.16\00:10:51.32 where they can get an education 00:10:51.35\00:10:52.83 and training to do all types of useful labor 00:10:52.86\00:10:57.06 and trade so that they are able to- 00:10:57.09\00:10:59.42 they're able to make a go over in the world. 00:10:59.45\00:11:02.18 When I came here, I was so happy, 00:11:02.21\00:11:05.59 so I was praying, "Lord, please help me 00:11:05.62\00:11:08.50 that if can pass 10th standard whatever You'll say I'll do." 00:11:08.53\00:11:12.97 So I finish my 10th standard God gave me more than that. 00:11:13.00\00:11:16.50 Because I said only the 10th standard 00:11:16.53\00:11:17.99 but now I am doing 12 also. 00:11:18.02\00:11:20.03 And I did midwifery and seminary also. 00:11:20.06\00:11:22.76 So God gave me more than what I want. 00:11:22.79\00:11:24.99 Many girls are trained in tailoring 00:11:26.47\00:11:28.20 and boys are trained in mechanics, 00:11:28.23\00:11:31.39 welding and electrical work. 00:11:31.42\00:11:34.93 There are so many educated people 00:11:34.96\00:11:36.31 in this country but with no job 00:11:36.34\00:11:38.94 but if you are trained in location arts 00:11:38.97\00:11:42.49 they can survive on their selves 00:11:42.52\00:11:43.66 when they leave this place. 00:11:43.69\00:11:46.10 The most educational systems 00:11:46.13\00:11:48.90 you take children out of villages, 00:11:48.93\00:11:50.80 you put them in a school in dormitories. 00:11:50.83\00:11:53.58 The only thing they do is study, study, study, study 00:11:53.61\00:11:58.33 but they never really learned to support themselves with work. 00:11:58.36\00:12:02.86 So when they finish their education 00:12:02.89\00:12:04.94 they can't go back to their village and work 00:12:04.97\00:12:07.16 because they don't know how to harvest rice, 00:12:07.19\00:12:09.24 they don't know how to plant, they don't know how to farm 00:12:09.27\00:12:12.32 and they don't have any desire for it anymore. 00:12:12.35\00:12:15.35 So I've been very much against all about 00:12:15.38\00:12:19.02 and I have really desired 00:12:19.05\00:12:20.94 for our children to learn to work 00:12:20.97\00:12:23.66 and make a living in a village setting 00:12:23.69\00:12:26.84 and if they choose to go to a city 00:12:26.87\00:12:29.28 then they can still go. 00:12:29.31\00:12:30.99 If they choose whatever they choose 00:12:31.02\00:12:32.53 but they have in their mind the practical skills 00:12:32.56\00:12:36.18 of being able to support themselves with their hands. 00:12:36.21\00:12:39.76 We have given each child a garden 00:12:39.79\00:12:44.32 they have sense of ownership, they feel good about it 00:12:44.35\00:12:47.79 when they can care for their own garden. 00:12:47.82\00:12:50.43 And we see them out early in the morning 00:12:50.46\00:12:52.22 and especially in the evening attending their plants 00:12:52.25\00:12:56.34 and sometimes we buy the food from them 00:12:56.37\00:13:00.08 and serve it in the cafeteria. 00:13:00.11\00:13:02.20 You know, the other kids in different groups 00:13:02.23\00:13:04.77 and their group makes the money together. 00:13:04.80\00:13:07.88 You know, it teaches them about business. 00:13:07.91\00:13:11.72 It'll teach them the value of work. 00:13:11.75\00:13:15.40 They grow their own vegetables 00:13:15.43\00:13:16.94 and they sell them in our cafeteria. 00:13:16.97\00:13:19.82 We buy them and they use the money for offering 00:13:19.85\00:13:22.65 or for buying their own personal needs. 00:13:22.68\00:13:26.39 You know we've had our children now for many years, 00:13:26.42\00:13:30.06 since about 1995 we've started our first orphanage. 00:13:30.09\00:13:34.36 And many times I refer to them as my diamonds. 00:13:34.39\00:13:39.33 We have a whole building full of diamonds, 00:13:39.36\00:13:42.01 of male and female diamonds, 00:13:42.04\00:13:45.47 of boys and girls. 00:13:45.50\00:13:47.23 You know, it's such a joy to work with these children, 00:13:47.26\00:13:50.31 such a joy to just be a part of this program. 00:13:50.34\00:13:53.37 Living Springs ministers to children 00:13:57.39\00:13:59.81 that are otherwise unwanted, 00:13:59.84\00:14:02.29 endeavoring to show them the love of Christ 00:14:02.32\00:14:04.94 in practical and tangible ways. 00:14:04.97\00:14:08.12 In a moment, we'll see what this ministry is doing 00:14:08.15\00:14:11.25 to help children even before they are born. 00:14:11.28\00:14:16.10 We share this globe with about seven billion people, 00:14:16.13\00:14:20.29 that's a lot of people and standing here 00:14:20.32\00:14:23.43 in this busy city it's easy to feel small and insignificant. 00:14:23.46\00:14:28.62 After all, I'm only one person 00:14:28.65\00:14:30.75 what different can I make? 00:14:30.78\00:14:32.74 But the fact is each of us can make a difference. 00:14:32.77\00:14:36.72 God is calling us to turn our lives 00:14:36.75\00:14:39.07 and our skills over to Him. 00:14:39.10\00:14:42.43 Around the world, the individual workers 00:14:42.46\00:14:44.79 at OCI Ministries are letting God use them 00:14:44.82\00:14:48.35 to bring hope and healing one person at a time. 00:14:48.38\00:14:52.79 You can make a difference too. 00:14:52.82\00:14:55.40 When you connect to OCI, 00:14:55.43\00:14:57.65 you connect to more than 80 ministries worldwide. 00:14:57.68\00:15:02.59 If you're interested in getting involved 00:15:02.62\00:15:05.05 in the global ministry of OCI, 00:15:05.08\00:15:07.66 visit our website or call our office, 00:15:07.69\00:15:10.24 we would love to talk to you. 00:15:10.27\00:15:11.79 Every five minutes, a woman dies in childbirth 00:15:16.20\00:15:19.75 in the country of India. 00:15:19.78\00:15:21.78 This is frequently due to poor prenatal care 00:15:21.81\00:15:25.65 or the unsanitary conditions in which the birth occurs. 00:15:25.68\00:15:30.43 Almost 80 percent of all childbirths 00:15:30.46\00:15:33.49 take place in a local village, 00:15:33.52\00:15:35.77 frequently among unhygienic conditions. 00:15:35.80\00:15:39.29 To help remedy this situation, 00:15:39.32\00:15:41.67 Living Springs is training a small army of midwives 00:15:41.70\00:15:46.38 whose focus is to help these women 00:15:46.41\00:15:48.78 deliver strong and healthy babies. 00:15:48.81\00:15:54.01 Our midwifery program actually started here on- 00:15:54.04\00:15:57.43 at our Bible seminary on the same property 00:15:57.46\00:15:59.69 with the Bible seminary. 00:15:59.72\00:16:01.97 My wife Lois started that program 00:16:02.00\00:16:05.37 and we didn't have much space but there we- 00:16:05.40\00:16:09.38 everybody crowded up a little tighter 00:16:09.41\00:16:11.38 and we took in the girls 00:16:11.41\00:16:13.29 and started a midwifery program 00:16:13.32\00:16:15.83 and that has grown to where now 00:16:15.86\00:16:18.86 we've graduated 73 girls as midwives. 00:16:18.89\00:16:22.79 And they're out in villages, in hospitals, 00:16:22.82\00:16:26.42 many of them have gone back to their own villages 00:16:26.45\00:16:28.79 and they're delivering babies, caring for mothers, 00:16:28.82\00:16:31.92 working with people in their own villages. 00:16:31.95\00:16:35.70 I had been a midwife for decades 00:16:35.73\00:16:38.50 and I always wanted to do a training program 00:16:38.53\00:16:41.85 because I see a need in America 00:16:41.88\00:16:44.85 as well as here for the training of young women. 00:16:44.88\00:16:48.43 We were here, and they asked me 00:16:48.46\00:16:50.30 if I could help with an auxiliary 00:16:50.33\00:16:52.92 nurses training program 00:16:52.95\00:16:54.68 and this just sounded too big for me 00:16:54.71\00:16:56.70 because I'm really not a nurse so to speak. 00:16:56.73\00:17:00.47 I'm a medical missionary who specializes in midwifery. 00:17:00.50\00:17:04.56 And so then they said well, 00:17:04.59\00:17:06.69 could you just teach midwifery and my heart just jumped 00:17:06.72\00:17:10.16 and I said, wow that would be a wonderful opportunity. 00:17:10.19\00:17:14.54 And we really didn't know if it would be acceptable. 00:17:14.57\00:17:18.00 We didn't know how it would fit this, 00:17:18.03\00:17:20.47 this culture but it has just proven 00:17:20.50\00:17:22.36 to be a wonderful blessing to me, 00:17:22.39\00:17:25.03 to our students and to the women. 00:17:25.06\00:17:27.57 They really do want natural childbirth. 00:17:27.60\00:17:31.33 When I was small, that time only I was thinking 00:17:31.36\00:17:34.11 that my goal was to become doctor. 00:17:34.14\00:17:37.23 The first time I did delivery, 00:17:37.26\00:17:38.95 first time I was afraid after that I was- 00:17:38.98\00:17:43.39 I did nicely, I did 80 deliveries, 80 births I did. 00:17:43.42\00:17:49.32 God has helped me so much. 00:17:49.35\00:17:52.51 I was afraid but He gave me courage to do this work. 00:17:52.54\00:17:56.85 By His grace, I am able to do this work. 00:17:56.88\00:18:03.39 We tried a place our graduates in areas 00:18:03.42\00:18:06.15 where they can observe natural childbirth 00:18:06.18\00:18:09.43 and there are some hospitals 00:18:09.46\00:18:11.13 where this is offered and our midwives are working 00:18:11.16\00:18:15.09 in those hospitals promoting the natural childbirth theme. 00:18:15.12\00:18:19.73 This little clinic was started six years ago, 00:18:19.76\00:18:22.34 there was an old church that was falling in 00:18:22.37\00:18:25.35 and they had moved the congregation to a new church 00:18:25.38\00:18:28.34 and they were thinking, well, what should we do with this 00:18:28.37\00:18:30.46 and immediately as I looked inside the church, 00:18:30.49\00:18:32.98 I said this would make a wonderful place 00:18:33.01\00:18:35.35 for birthing center. 00:18:35.38\00:18:36.91 And it's just actually a church sanctuary small 00:18:36.94\00:18:41.21 but divided into two sections 00:18:41.24\00:18:43.05 and then utility room in the back. 00:18:43.08\00:18:45.83 We'd try to provide in the clinic 00:18:45.86\00:18:48.46 things for intervention or for the safety of the mother 00:18:48.49\00:18:52.24 or the baby, such things as oxygen, 00:18:52.27\00:18:56.65 medicines for hemorrhage if that should happen. 00:18:56.68\00:19:00.29 The other thing is we have hot water and heat, 00:19:00.32\00:19:03.60 which many homes don't have out here in the country. 00:19:03.63\00:19:08.33 We have a generator if we need lights at night 00:19:08.36\00:19:11.72 and we do have an ambulance 00:19:11.75\00:19:15.05 that we can transport a mother if she needs help. 00:19:15.08\00:19:18.45 That's really one of the biggest problems 00:19:18.48\00:19:21.10 out in the village is getting transportation 00:19:21.13\00:19:25.48 if you have an urgent situation. 00:19:25.51\00:19:28.35 The general practice in the village 00:19:28.38\00:19:31.91 for having a homebirth, 00:19:31.94\00:19:34.64 it was carried on by the village Di, DICOM 00:19:34.67\00:19:38.78 we call it the work of the Di. 00:19:38.81\00:19:41.41 And they have many wonderful customs 00:19:41.44\00:19:43.93 but then there are other customs 00:19:43.96\00:19:45.70 that are definitely detrimental. 00:19:45.73\00:19:48.05 It's a widespread custom in this area 00:19:48.08\00:19:51.62 to starve the baby out, 00:19:51.65\00:19:54.25 so they cut down on the rice 00:19:54.28\00:19:56.91 and you can eat other little things 00:19:56.94\00:19:58.75 but they really don't want that baby to get big, 00:19:58.78\00:20:02.03 plus they don't understand 00:20:02.06\00:20:03.39 the brain is developing at a tremendous rate, 00:20:03.42\00:20:06.99 you know, its just one of the worst things 00:20:07.02\00:20:09.03 that they could do. 00:20:09.06\00:20:10.42 They believe if you eat pumpkin, 00:20:11.25\00:20:15.22 you said if you eat pumpkin, you get joint pain, 00:20:15.25\00:20:18.06 you get body pain and when you become old, 00:20:18.09\00:20:22.81 you won't be able to, you know, work. 00:20:22.84\00:20:25.93 You know they believe that, you know. 00:20:25.96\00:20:28.23 We see so many children 00:20:28.26\00:20:30.30 who's having night blindness 00:20:30.33\00:20:32.07 because they don't eat yellow vegetables. 00:20:32.10\00:20:36.60 We started our work over here in 2006 00:20:36.63\00:20:41.09 and after the baby out delivered we cut the cord. 00:20:41.12\00:20:46.98 And mothers and relatives and village Di's, 00:20:47.01\00:20:50.83 they don't allow us to cut the cord before, you know. 00:20:50.86\00:20:55.17 And their belief is that if you cut the cord 00:20:55.20\00:20:58.53 the placenta will go up in your chest 00:20:58.56\00:21:02.63 and the patient is going to die. 00:21:02.66\00:21:04.84 That's what they believe. 00:21:04.87\00:21:06.37 And since we are working with them, 00:21:06.40\00:21:10.01 we teach them ahead to the mother 00:21:10.04\00:21:12.39 before they deliver, 00:21:12.42\00:21:13.59 you know, this is what procedure 00:21:13.62\00:21:15.07 we are going to do and you all think that this is, 00:21:15.10\00:21:18.38 you are believing, it's- no, it's superstition 00:21:18.41\00:21:21.36 you are thinking about. 00:21:21.39\00:21:23.46 The midwifery has impacted 00:21:23.49\00:21:26.74 the lives in a very positive way. 00:21:26.77\00:21:30.64 So in the community our reputation 00:21:30.67\00:21:32.93 is for saving lives 00:21:32.96\00:21:35.60 and for caring about mothers. 00:21:35.63\00:21:40.28 Sometimes our midwives are out 00:21:40.31\00:21:41.99 by five or six in the morning 00:21:42.02\00:21:43.55 if they have mothers who are pregnant 00:21:43.58\00:21:46.48 and they can't check them any other time, 00:21:46.51\00:21:48.74 they'll get up and go out to the village 00:21:48.77\00:21:50.84 and people notice these things. 00:21:50.87\00:21:55.02 We just had a graduation. 00:21:55.05\00:21:56.92 There were 600 people who came 00:21:56.95\00:21:59.21 and I would say at least a third of them 00:21:59.24\00:22:02.15 were mothers with babies 00:22:02.18\00:22:04.14 and they were just beaming to see 00:22:04.17\00:22:05.89 these young women progressing in life. 00:22:05.92\00:22:09.70 And our statistics and that which we've done 00:22:09.73\00:22:12.91 has been so transparently good, 00:22:12.94\00:22:16.71 everyone is like, yup, 00:22:16.74\00:22:18.78 your girls are saving lives and helping people. 00:22:18.81\00:22:24.65 We teach our children as they get older 00:22:24.68\00:22:27.65 how to help other people 00:22:27.68\00:22:28.92 of a medical missionary type work 00:22:28.95\00:22:31.97 and many of our children say 00:22:32.00\00:22:34.59 when we finish high school, 00:22:34.62\00:22:36.80 we want to go to the Bible seminary 00:22:36.83\00:22:39.61 and we want to do medical missionary work. 00:22:39.64\00:22:42.21 We have, you know, three phases in the spiritual, 00:22:42.24\00:22:45.89 in the scholastic academics and also in vocational. 00:22:45.92\00:22:50.24 We want them to be able to support themselves financially. 00:22:50.27\00:22:53.14 As Paul was a tentmaker and supported himself 00:22:53.17\00:22:55.39 and was able to give the gospel, 00:22:55.42\00:22:57.24 that's our main thrust 00:22:57.27\00:22:59.65 and we want everyone to have that ability. 00:22:59.68\00:23:02.52 Now some people were going to full time conference work 00:23:02.55\00:23:06.56 and we were happy for that. 00:23:06.59\00:23:08.83 We want them to still have that trade 00:23:08.86\00:23:10.93 if they can fall back on and then we know 00:23:10.96\00:23:13.47 that they're gonna be some people that 00:23:13.50\00:23:14.85 well not really do much of all the spiritual 00:23:14.88\00:23:17.21 but at least they're not gonna be begging for a hand out, 00:23:17.24\00:23:21.84 they know how to take care of themselves. 00:23:21.87\00:23:23.87 And we believe later on, they're gonna say hey, 00:23:23.90\00:23:26.43 you know what I got there when I was a child, 00:23:26.46\00:23:28.13 that was when I was happiest and I want to get that back. 00:23:28.16\00:23:33.93 Most of them were quite poor 00:23:33.96\00:23:36.08 and they probably would go on to college 00:23:36.11\00:23:38.17 if they were able but they're not able. 00:23:38.20\00:23:41.15 They have no possibility of doing that 00:23:41.18\00:23:44.39 and we've taken in these young men and women 00:23:44.42\00:23:47.68 and we're trying to give them 00:23:47.71\00:23:49.19 a very practical training for one 00:23:49.22\00:23:52.08 so that they can do welding 00:23:52.11\00:23:56.32 and tailoring and all types of practical skills 00:23:56.35\00:24:00.90 as well as we give them 00:24:00.93\00:24:02.56 a good medical missionary training program 00:24:02.59\00:24:05.74 where they learn hydrotherapy, massage, nutrition. 00:24:05.77\00:24:10.17 We teach them of course the Bible 00:24:10.20\00:24:12.12 and the writings of Ellen White. 00:24:12.15\00:24:14.14 We get our young people out visiting homes 00:24:14.17\00:24:17.88 and they've done tremendous amount of good 00:24:17.91\00:24:21.33 just even in our local village, in our local area. 00:24:21.36\00:24:24.86 We're just beginning to get some better picking up 00:24:24.89\00:24:27.16 on setting up their own practical skill program 00:24:27.19\00:24:30.19 to be self-supporting missionaries. 00:24:30.22\00:24:33.67 We also are gonna do teaching as a trade 00:24:33.70\00:24:38.46 and our hope in that is that 00:24:38.49\00:24:40.30 some of the students were going to village 00:24:40.33\00:24:43.16 where they can start their own school 00:24:43.19\00:24:46.20 and we want to teach the Christian principles, 00:24:46.23\00:24:48.19 you know Christian education 00:24:48.22\00:24:50.37 which is to restore them to the image of God. 00:24:50.40\00:24:52.78 I had the privilege of being a part 00:24:55.93\00:24:58.55 along with a few men that started OCI 00:24:58.58\00:25:02.41 and being a part of a family like OCI 00:25:02.44\00:25:05.11 helps the church at large 00:25:05.14\00:25:07.58 to understand that our supporting ministry 00:25:07.61\00:25:10.68 of the church is a legitimate ministry 00:25:10.71\00:25:14.75 that we're trying to work with the church 00:25:14.78\00:25:16.95 as a team to accomplish God's work, 00:25:16.98\00:25:20.18 the mission for the Church. 00:25:20.21\00:25:22.22 You know the work is going to be finished 00:25:22.25\00:25:25.36 by lay people not by the church workers, 00:25:25.39\00:25:28.11 that I truly believe it. 00:25:28.14\00:25:32.23 We have a very close relationship 00:25:32.26\00:25:34.03 with the Seventh-day Adventist Southern Asia division 00:25:34.06\00:25:37.15 and with all of the local sections and union. 00:25:37.18\00:25:41.34 We work very closely with our church, 00:25:41.37\00:25:43.29 with our leadership and always have. 00:25:43.32\00:25:46.05 I know Bill Dull from the time 00:25:46.08\00:25:48.07 that I came to know him. 00:25:48.10\00:25:51.12 I feel that he is really an apostle to India. 00:25:51.15\00:25:57.32 His life has really touched 00:25:57.35\00:25:59.81 the heart of our people and his ministry. 00:25:59.84\00:26:03.15 He's humble and mingling 00:26:03.18\00:26:05.70 with all classes of people freely. 00:26:05.73\00:26:10.64 He's a true missionary to India 00:26:10.67\00:26:13.05 and we know that God has blessed him 00:26:13.08\00:26:15.68 and he has been an instrument 00:26:15.71\00:26:17.79 in hand of God to reach out to the, 00:26:17.82\00:26:20.39 we don't know how many, but I believe that 00:26:20.42\00:26:23.73 reaching to the millions of people in India. 00:26:23.76\00:26:26.87 And I believe that this is the kind of work 00:26:26.90\00:26:29.26 that is going to finish the work in India. 00:26:29.29\00:26:32.38 I truly believe it. 00:26:32.41\00:26:34.54 Our leaders are really behind us 00:26:34.57\00:26:36.53 and they're doing everything they can to help us. 00:26:36.56\00:26:39.06 We have several people that we have found 00:26:39.09\00:26:41.74 to be very dedicated supportive men 00:26:41.77\00:26:45.01 that thankful to be able to work with the church. 00:26:53.85\00:26:57.92 Through their ministry to the poor, 00:26:57.95\00:26:59.92 Living Springs Overseas Missions 00:26:59.95\00:27:02.46 is ministering
