Yeah. 00:11:27.22\00:11:29.55 So, you know, what... 00:11:29.58\00:11:31.95 It's really, I'm not saying unique 00:11:31.99\00:11:35.32 but special about Terri is she's so loving, 00:11:35.36\00:11:40.46 her heart, she's got such a beautiful heart 00:11:40.50\00:11:44.87 and just loves everybody here 00:11:44.90\00:11:47.47 really has embraced this program. 00:11:47.50\00:11:50.61 And how is she doing from a doctor's perspective? 00:11:50.64\00:11:54.78 Yeah, she is 63-year-old African American 00:11:54.81\00:11:58.78 and overweight and this is a unique situation 00:11:58.81\00:12:03.18 'cause she was going in the bathroom 00:12:03.22\00:12:06.69 and stepped on something and slipped. 00:12:06.72\00:12:11.26 She probably already told that, 00:12:11.29\00:12:13.46 and she went down so hard crashed 00:12:13.50\00:12:17.27 and both of her... 00:12:17.30\00:12:19.00 The nerves in both of her shoulders just... 00:12:19.03\00:12:22.47 And so it's really sad because her husband has to feed her. 00:12:22.50\00:12:28.74 You know, if she wants to eat something, 00:12:28.78\00:12:30.78 she has to eat kind of like a dog, 00:12:30.81\00:12:33.75 and she's trying to get her cell phone 00:12:33.78\00:12:37.75 out of the pouch here in front, 00:12:37.79\00:12:40.36 and she just, you know... 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.72 She has to just go like this. 00:12:41.76\00:12:44.26 It's really sad to see somebody struggling like that. 00:12:44.29\00:12:47.66 But what's really neat is she is improving, 00:12:47.70\00:12:54.14 and I think that probably they got pictures of her, 00:12:54.17\00:12:57.87 and she was determined to get her arm up 00:12:57.91\00:13:01.91 and to get her hand in to the stirrup 00:13:01.94\00:13:05.48 on this desk bike 00:13:05.51\00:13:08.62 and go around like this, and that's, you know... 00:13:08.65\00:13:12.82 We're going to show a clip 00:13:12.85\00:13:14.32 of that Paul is going to cut it in here. 00:13:14.36\00:13:16.93 Don't hurt yourself. 00:13:16.96\00:13:18.33 I really want to but I don't want to. 00:13:25.73\00:13:27.87 I know. 00:13:27.90\00:13:31.27 But either way, it's a challenge. 00:13:31.31\00:13:33.38 Oh, gosh! 00:13:39.21\00:13:42.68 Struggle is real. 00:13:42.72\00:13:47.79 Anyway, she's diabetic 00:13:47.82\00:13:52.69 and, you know, on lots of insulin to cover for her. 00:13:52.73\00:13:57.47 And when she went through a fast, 00:13:57.50\00:14:00.54 we thought we could get her off of it 00:14:00.57\00:14:02.14 and see what happened, 00:14:02.17\00:14:05.47 but later on, we realized that 00:14:05.51\00:14:07.28 she was having a viral gastroenteritis, 00:14:07.31\00:14:11.58 and so it didn't work as well as we thought it would. 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.85 But anyway... 00:14:13.88\00:14:17.79 She's doing something that every diabetic should do 00:14:17.82\00:14:21.69 as far as I'm concerned. 00:14:21.72\00:14:24.03 You look at the food you're going to eat 00:14:24.06\00:14:26.96 and then you put the rapid active one in 00:14:27.00\00:14:29.20 and then you have it. 00:14:29.23\00:14:30.57 So you have to be disciplined. 00:14:30.60\00:14:32.17 You say, "Well, this is the food I'm eating, 00:14:32.20\00:14:34.77 and that's kind of what's there. 00:14:34.80\00:14:36.64 And I've done so much exercise. 00:14:36.67\00:14:38.81 And now this is how many units I should give." 00:14:38.84\00:14:41.41 And you give it right at the meal. 00:14:41.44\00:14:43.81 It's really neat because they've got a long acting one, 00:14:43.85\00:14:46.85 like your body makes is background 00:14:46.88\00:14:49.08 and then they have the other one 00:14:49.12\00:14:51.49 that lasts for a peak is for 30 to 90 minutes. 00:14:51.52\00:14:56.79 So anyway, 00:14:56.83\00:14:58.66 she was determined to get off of it. 00:14:58.69\00:15:00.60 And so we let her try for a while. 00:15:00.63\00:15:02.96 And her sugars were really, really bad. 00:15:03.00\00:15:09.50 So we started checking in with our machine 00:15:09.54\00:15:14.28 and hers was reading about 150 to 200 00:15:14.31\00:15:19.35 above what it really was. 00:15:19.38\00:15:20.72 So that was a little bit encouraging. 00:15:20.75\00:15:24.09 But, you know, she didn't realize 00:15:24.12\00:15:26.96 how much exercise was going to do. 00:15:26.99\00:15:29.96 Dr. Golan tells them when they first come in, 00:15:29.99\00:15:32.73 "You're probably going to get off your insulin 00:15:32.76\00:15:36.10 but you've got to take a new medication, 00:15:36.13\00:15:38.97 and that new medication is walking." 00:15:39.00\00:15:40.97 Right. It's really good. 00:15:41.00\00:15:43.37 So anyway, you know, 00:15:43.41\00:15:46.17 you want to know what's happening, 00:15:46.21\00:15:47.74 and there's a really neat test. 00:15:47.78\00:15:49.68 It's called a C-peptide. 00:15:49.71\00:15:52.01 And somehow, it can differentiate 00:15:52.05\00:15:55.08 for what you make and what you inject. 00:15:55.12\00:15:58.99 And so I was sitting there at the table the last Sunday, 00:15:59.02\00:16:03.16 and I turned to the guy there we were talking to, 00:16:03.19\00:16:07.33 and I said, I'm going to go over there 00:16:07.36\00:16:09.70 and you're going to see a warhoop. 00:16:09.73\00:16:12.83 So I'm going to say, "Chanting good news chair is coming." 00:16:12.87\00:16:17.17 When I got over there, she gave the warhoop 00:16:17.21\00:16:19.31 because she is making enough insulin 00:16:19.34\00:16:21.88 so that she won't have to be on it 00:16:21.91\00:16:23.91 as she does the program. 00:16:23.95\00:16:25.85 That's excellent. That's so good to hear. 00:16:25.88\00:16:28.48 She is really pumped. 00:16:28.52\00:16:31.05 She's very, very excited about what's going on here. 00:16:31.09\00:16:34.79 She shared with us 00:16:34.82\00:16:37.59 that the love that she feels from the doctors, 00:16:37.63\00:16:42.20 from the nurses, from the staff... 00:16:42.23\00:16:43.80 Everybody. 00:16:43.83\00:16:45.17 She's never experienced before in her life. 00:16:45.20\00:16:47.97 Yeah. 00:16:48.00\00:16:49.34 You know, and I know it's God's love 00:16:49.37\00:16:50.81 that has come in through everyone here. 00:16:50.84\00:16:55.14 And so she's blessed, 00:16:55.18\00:16:58.41 and she's going to stick with this program. 00:16:58.45\00:17:01.02 And if we don't show God's love, 00:17:01.05\00:17:02.95 then we're denying Him. 00:17:02.98\00:17:05.49 Amen, amen. 00:17:05.52\00:17:07.69 So we got a few seconds left. 00:17:07.72\00:17:09.66 Any less moments of encouragement words? 00:17:09.69\00:17:13.60 Well, she's going to have to get the exercise in, 00:17:13.63\00:17:17.37 and then she can get off of the insulin. 00:17:17.40\00:17:20.40 Good. Yeah. 00:17:20.44\00:17:21.97 So that being said, I want to thank you. 00:17:22.00\00:17:24.61 I know you're busy, 00:17:24.64\00:17:25.97 you're seeing patients all day long 00:17:26.01\00:17:28.41 and then scheduling in here. 00:17:28.44\00:17:29.94 And after this, you got lectures to do I guess? 00:17:29.98\00:17:32.75 No, we're having graduation tonight. 00:17:32.78\00:17:34.92 Okay. Yeah. 00:17:34.95\00:17:36.28 Well, thank you, guess the same. 00:17:36.32\00:17:38.25 Yeah. God bless you. 00:17:38.29\00:17:39.62 And thanks for bringing them in, man. 00:17:39.65\00:17:41.46 Yeah, you bet. You're the guy. 00:17:41.49\00:17:43.63 Well, I do my best. 00:17:43.66\00:17:45.56 God bless. Thank you, friends. 00:17:45.59\00:17:47.53 Don't go away 'cause Pastor Damon is up next. 00:17:47.56\00:17:50.87 Welcome back, friends. 00:17:55.64\00:17:56.97 Help me welcome Pastor Snead. 00:17:57.01\00:17:59.81 Good to see you, brother. Hey, you too, friend, thanks. 00:17:59.84\00:18:01.84 Yeah, it's always good to see you, 00:18:01.88\00:18:03.78 especially when we're talking about our guests here, 00:18:03.81\00:18:06.82 which is Terri Crumpton, right? 00:18:06.85\00:18:10.25 And Terri's an unusual person. 00:18:10.29\00:18:14.59 She's so bubbly and so loving and so caring, 00:18:14.62\00:18:19.43 and she had this accident where her hands were paralyzed, 00:18:19.46\00:18:24.10 but now she's starting to move them a little bit. 00:18:24.13\00:18:27.60 But what about spiritually? 00:18:27.64\00:18:29.30 Where she is? 00:18:29.34\00:18:31.31 Well, what impressed me about 00:18:31.34\00:18:32.74 Terri was just the way she handled the accident. 00:18:32.77\00:18:36.54 I mean, can you... 00:18:36.58\00:18:37.91 She's not an old woman, 00:18:37.95\00:18:39.35 she's relatively still young, 00:18:39.38\00:18:41.65 and vibrant in life going, shopping, 00:18:41.68\00:18:44.02 and living life and doing what most people do at her age. 00:18:44.05\00:18:47.22 And then she has this terrible accident 00:18:47.26\00:18:48.59 where she falls and she loses all capacity 00:18:48.62\00:18:51.93 to move her arms this way. 00:18:51.96\00:18:53.50 Yeah. So she can't pick her arms up. 00:18:53.53\00:18:55.70 So through that, she just gets terribly depressed, broken. 00:18:55.73\00:19:00.64 I mean, you think about your husband has to... 00:19:00.67\00:19:02.30 She has to feed. 00:19:02.34\00:19:03.67 Anything you use your hands for to lift, 00:19:03.71\00:19:05.27 someone else has to do for her. 00:19:05.31\00:19:07.61 And so she was telling me that her story 00:19:07.64\00:19:09.31 of just how hopeless she has felt, 00:19:09.34\00:19:11.41 how depressed she has felt. 00:19:11.45\00:19:13.45 Now what's interesting is, of course, at NEWSTART, 00:19:13.48\00:19:15.62 she's starting to get, 00:19:15.65\00:19:17.12 some things are starting to happen a little bit for her. 00:19:17.15\00:19:19.79 And I know that the more that she engages the health, 00:19:19.82\00:19:22.49 the more that she loses weight, her body has a better chance. 00:19:22.52\00:19:25.86 But it's her attitude about this, 00:19:25.89\00:19:27.76 it's her spiritual recovery. 00:19:27.80\00:19:29.46 Amen. 00:19:29.50\00:19:30.83 That has been very important. 00:19:30.87\00:19:32.53 And I've watched her every morning 00:19:32.57\00:19:34.67 at fresh start lectures, 00:19:34.70\00:19:36.04 I've seen her, you know, 00:19:36.07\00:19:37.41 smiling and looking in intently, 00:19:37.44\00:19:39.91 and she's just come alive, and she's shared with me 00:19:39.94\00:19:42.61 in some of our interviews together 00:19:42.64\00:19:44.55 that she wants to be healed and who wouldn't. 00:19:44.58\00:19:48.35 But if not, 00:19:48.38\00:19:49.88 she sees the bigger picture is that Christ is coming. 00:19:49.92\00:19:53.39 That there's the bigger picture is a relationship 00:19:53.42\00:19:55.46 and you don't need arms 00:19:55.49\00:19:57.33 to engage Christ in relationship. 00:19:57.36\00:19:59.96 And so she sees that bigger picture, 00:20:00.00\00:20:01.53 and it's given her a certain amount of joy 00:20:01.56\00:20:04.53 and contentment to deal with 00:20:04.57\00:20:07.10 whatever the future is for her with her mobility. 00:20:07.14\00:20:10.44 Oh, I understand she was about giving up. 00:20:10.47\00:20:13.48 And perhaps she's being baptized, right? 00:20:13.51\00:20:19.25 Yes, sir. This Sabbath. 00:20:19.28\00:20:20.92 She surely is. 00:20:20.95\00:20:22.35 You know, I want to tell our viewers, 00:20:22.38\00:20:24.59 Damon's doing a series of a Wheel of Hope and Faith. 00:20:24.62\00:20:31.03 Actually, it's called Wheel of Faith. 00:20:31.06\00:20:33.33 And Damon is been all over the country 00:20:33.36\00:20:35.60 giving this gospel message like you've never heard before. 00:20:35.63\00:20:42.07 And this is neat because it's the first time 00:20:42.10\00:20:43.64 that a NEWSTART group is kind of going outside 00:20:43.67\00:20:46.57 to join a seminar group, but they're both... 00:20:46.61\00:20:49.74 They're both learning the same thing. 00:20:49.78\00:20:51.88 Yes, yes. 00:20:51.91\00:20:53.28 But, you know, you can go to Damon's website. 00:20:53.31\00:20:56.18 You want to give that information? 00:20:56.22\00:20:57.69 Yeah, so the website is just WheelOfFaithMinistries.org, 00:20:57.72\00:21:01.72 and you can go there and see what we're doing in. 00:21:01.76\00:21:04.16 Yeah. Good. 00:21:04.19\00:21:05.53 Anyway, just a little plug for you. 00:21:05.56\00:21:06.90 Yeah, thank you very much. Yeah. 00:21:06.93\00:21:08.26 So, Terri, you know, 00:21:08.30\00:21:12.00 I still believe in miracles and some days 00:21:12.03\00:21:15.14 I feel like that little kid I used to be 00:21:15.17\00:21:17.64 or I looked up at God and I said, 00:21:17.67\00:21:19.41 "God, I want a new bicycle." 00:21:19.44\00:21:22.11 And I'd get one somehow, someway, 00:21:22.14\00:21:25.55 and I'm looking up at God right now. 00:21:25.58\00:21:27.22 I'm saying, "God, I want Terri to have arms again." 00:21:27.25\00:21:32.62 Yeah, and you feel for her. Yeah. 00:21:32.65\00:21:34.26 You know that she just wants to get our health back now 00:21:34.29\00:21:37.66 but for spiritual reasons. 00:21:37.69\00:21:39.19 I mean, of course, we all want the things 00:21:39.23\00:21:41.26 that our mobility gives us. 00:21:41.30\00:21:42.63 Sure. But she... 00:21:42.66\00:21:44.00 I think this is her best chance of healing though 00:21:44.03\00:21:46.43 is because God sees maybe in her heart, 00:21:46.47\00:21:48.27 "Okay, now I've got her attention. 00:21:48.30\00:21:50.24 There's a greater healing she's looking at." 00:21:50.27\00:21:52.41 Now He can maybe restore. 00:21:52.44\00:21:54.44 That's right. 00:21:54.48\00:21:55.81 And that's what I think NEWSTART offers people, 00:21:55.84\00:21:57.45 that spiritual restoration. 00:21:57.48\00:21:58.98 Amen. 00:21:59.01\00:22:00.42 We're running out of time, brother. 00:22:00.45\00:22:02.18 Man, it's good to talk to you about Terri. 00:22:02.22\00:22:04.79 God bless you and your ministry. 00:22:04.82\00:22:07.66 Friends, don't go away, 00:22:07.69\00:22:09.02 we have an important message following. 00:22:09.06\00:22:10.66 Welcome to NEWSTART Now. 00:22:48.16\00:22:49.73 I'm Dr. Neil Nedley, President of Weimar Institute. 00:22:49.76\00:22:52.47 And with me today is Dr. Eddie Ramirez, 00:22:52.50\00:22:54.74 one of our researchers and physicians 00:22:54.77\00:22:56.71 and teachers of research here at Weimar College. 00:22:56.74\00:23:01.01 And in fact, 00:23:01.04\00:23:02.38 the study we're going to be talking to you about today, 00:23:02.41\00:23:05.41 we had help from one of our college students, 00:23:05.45\00:23:08.42 Katie Antuna, 00:23:08.45\00:23:10.25 who actually has been very instrumental 00:23:10.29\00:23:13.05 and actually helping out with the depression 00:23:13.09\00:23:15.69 and anxiety recovery program on campus. 00:23:15.72\00:23:19.53 But in this particular study, 00:23:19.56\00:23:20.93 we were looking at a factor called emotional intelligence. 00:23:20.96\00:23:26.43 And, you know, Dr. Ramirez, 00:23:26.47\00:23:28.14 I was just saying in Forbes magazine, 00:23:28.17\00:23:30.11 they recommend that you hire for emotional intelligence, 00:23:30.14\00:23:33.17 even more so than general intelligence 00:23:33.21\00:23:36.14 that this has much more to do with your future success 00:23:36.18\00:23:38.98 and happiness and your ability to stay employed 00:23:39.01\00:23:42.08 and to reach higher levels of employment. 00:23:42.12\00:23:45.55 And so, Dr. Ramirez, 00:23:45.59\00:23:47.56 this study is coming out in biological psychiatry. 00:23:47.59\00:23:51.93 And the interesting thing is what we put into our body, 00:23:51.96\00:23:56.53 what we do with our body 00:23:56.56\00:23:58.03 actually has to do with our brain chemistry, 00:23:58.07\00:24:00.30 and it can change the biology in the brain itself 00:24:00.34\00:24:04.44 and that's what this study showed 00:24:04.47\00:24:05.81 and why it was published in biological psychiatry. 00:24:05.84\00:24:08.81 So tell us a little bit about the study group itself, 00:24:08.84\00:24:14.68 who was studied in this emotional intelligence data. 00:24:14.72\00:24:18.05 We have very nice sample group, 00:24:18.09\00:24:20.29 5,611 participants 00:24:20.32\00:24:24.36 that did the community-based depression recovery program 00:24:24.39\00:24:29.83 in literally around the world. 00:24:29.86\00:24:31.80 Okay. 00:24:31.83\00:24:33.17 So these subjects were not at Weimar Institute per se 00:24:33.20\00:24:37.54 but they were coming to learn Weimar type of principles, 00:24:37.57\00:24:41.78 and they were particularly coming 00:24:41.81\00:24:44.31 because they had depression, is that right? 00:24:44.35\00:24:46.98 Yes, three quarters of them had depression. 00:24:47.02\00:24:49.45 One quarter of them didn't have 00:24:49.48\00:24:51.29 but wanted to improve their mental health. 00:24:51.32\00:24:53.39 Okay. 00:24:53.42\00:24:54.76 So most of them came with significant depression, 00:24:54.79\00:24:57.39 and this is a mental health education program 00:24:57.43\00:25:00.40 they're coming to. 00:25:00.43\00:25:02.23 How many educational sessions are there? 00:25:02.26\00:25:05.50 That's right. They have... 00:25:05.53\00:25:07.17 It is an eight-week program. 00:25:07.20\00:25:08.67 So they had that eight sessions. 00:25:08.70\00:25:11.51 And one program in particular, 00:25:11.54\00:25:14.01 we focus in helping them understand this concept 00:25:14.04\00:25:17.51 and how to improve it. 00:25:17.55\00:25:19.21 But not only that was important 00:25:19.25\00:25:22.72 but we had to put the foundations 00:25:22.75\00:25:24.75 before we talk about EQ and these type of concepts, 00:25:24.79\00:25:28.12 we have to change their diet, 00:25:28.16\00:25:29.49 we have to put them to do exercise 00:25:29.52\00:25:31.43 and so forth to prepare the environment for them 00:25:31.46\00:25:34.36 to understand these concepts. 00:25:34.40\00:25:36.30 Well, that's quite interesting. 00:25:36.33\00:25:38.23 And so we do first some changes 00:25:38.27\00:25:41.30 in what they're putting into their body, 00:25:41.34\00:25:43.17 what they're doing with their body 00:25:43.20\00:25:44.57 that helps change the biology, 00:25:44.61\00:25:46.64 and then we get into teaching them 00:25:46.68\00:25:48.64 about how they're thinking 00:25:48.68\00:25:50.48 and how we think can actually change 00:25:50.51\00:25:53.21 our brain chemistry as well. 00:25:53.25\00:25:55.28 And so, emotional intelligence, can you tell us what it is? 00:25:55.32\00:25:58.95 Yes, it's that ability for you to interact with others 00:25:58.99\00:26:03.59 and to motivate yourself. 00:26:03.63\00:26:05.39 There's five things that emotional intelligence measures 00:26:05.43\00:26:08.06 and that is knowing your emotions, 00:26:08.10\00:26:09.96 managing your emotions, recognizing emotions in others, 00:26:10.00\00:26:13.57 managing relationships in others, 00:26:13.60\00:26:15.57 and motivating yourself to reach those goals. 00:26:15.60\00:26:18.77 Okay, so you can see 00:26:18.81\00:26:20.24 why it's very important to happiness 00:26:20.28\00:26:21.78 because relationship is connected 00:26:21.81\00:26:24.78 to our happiness and healthy relationships are. 00:26:24.81\00:26:27.85 And so what did we find out? 00:26:27.88\00:26:29.22 What was the average emotional intelligence for those 00:26:29.25\00:26:31.79 that came into the program? 00:26:31.82\00:26:33.15 So on average, they had 100, 00:26:33.19\00:26:35.86 which is the normal average around the world. 00:26:35.89\00:26:39.19 Okay. 00:26:39.23\00:26:40.56 So even though they were depressed, 00:26:40.60\00:26:41.93 their EQ was on average, right at the average point. 00:26:41.96\00:26:45.37 That's right. At 100. 00:26:45.40\00:26:46.94 And what was able to happen 00:26:46.97\00:26:49.10 during the course of that 00:26:49.14\00:26:50.47 just one program once a week for eight weeks? 00:26:50.51\00:26:52.84 That's right. 00:26:52.87\00:26:54.21 At the end, they had on average, 00:26:54.24\00:26:56.21 an EQ of 108.9. 00:26:56.24\00:27:00.42 Okay, so they went up nine points. 00:27:00.45\00:27:03.22 That's like an entire standard deviation. 00:27:03.25\00:27:06.49 That's very significant. 00:27:06.52\00:27:07.86 And that's the average. 00:27:07.89\00:27:09.22 There are some that actually went beyond the 120 barrier, 00:27:09.26\00:27:15.20 so that puts them 00:27:15.23\00:27:16.56 in the very top levels of emotional intelligence. 00:27:16.60\00:27:20.24 And that means they not only left the program 00:27:20.27\00:27:22.67 depression-free 00:27:22.70\00:27:24.11 and anxiety-free as many do 00:27:24.14\00:27:26.64 that leave that program 00:27:26.68\00:27:28.21 but they're now set up for levels of success 00:27:28.24\00:27:30.85 that are far better than people 00:27:30.88\00:27:32.28 who've never had depression and anxiety. 00:27:32.31\00:27:34.15 Yeah, those people that usually in a group setting, 00:27:34.18\00:27:36.89 they're causing sparks all over them. 00:27:36.92\00:27:40.06 Those people have actually a very low 00:27:40.09\00:27:42.09 emotional intelligence. 00:27:42.12\00:27:43.46 You can have low emotional intelligence 00:27:43.49\00:27:45.16 and high IQ 00:27:45.19\00:27:46.76 and this one helps you to get that balance, 00:27:46.80\00:27:49.40 you know, improve that IQ and EQ 00:27:49.43\00:27:51.90 as you participate in the program. 00:27:51.93\00:27:54.20 From NEWSTART Now, I'm Dr. Neil Nedley. 00:27:54.24\00:27:56.91 Join us again next week for another exciting study. 00:27:56.94\00:27:59.94
