Hi, friends. 00:00:40.04\00:00:41.37 Welcome to another edition of NEWSTART Now. 00:00:41.40\00:00:44.44 I am your host Ron Giannoni. 00:00:44.47\00:00:47.08 Before I introduce our guest, 00:00:47.11\00:00:49.48 I like to take a look at when he first arrived. 00:00:49.51\00:00:55.08 Well, we came here four years ago 00:00:55.12\00:00:58.45 and had a great experience. 00:00:58.49\00:01:04.16 Didn't lose a lot of weight which I thought I would, 00:01:04.19\00:01:07.53 but that was my own fault. 00:01:07.56\00:01:09.23 But we learned such great truths 00:01:09.26\00:01:11.30 about nutrition, cooking, 00:01:11.33\00:01:15.10 what to eat, what not to eat, 00:01:15.14\00:01:17.01 and we stuck with that program 00:01:17.04\00:01:18.94 when we got home for a couple of years, 00:01:18.97\00:01:21.18 at least, may be three. 00:01:21.21\00:01:23.88 But the last year or so, I kind of fell off the wagon. 00:01:23.91\00:01:27.88 And I know it's called NEWSTART 00:01:27.92\00:01:29.72 but I am looking at it as a restart 00:01:29.75\00:01:32.75 because I spent the last eight months 00:01:32.79\00:01:35.02 in the high Arctic 00:01:35.06\00:01:37.06 where fresh fruits and vegetables 00:01:37.09\00:01:38.73 are hard to come by, 00:01:38.76\00:01:40.63 and couldn't go for walks like I like to do partly 00:01:40.66\00:01:45.17 because of the darkness and the bears 00:01:45.20\00:01:47.64 and wolves and foxes that were out. 00:01:47.67\00:01:50.97 So that's my excuse for gaining 30 pounds or more. 00:01:51.01\00:01:55.71 And before I came out of the Arctic this year, 00:01:55.74\00:01:58.41 my wife called me and said, 00:01:58.45\00:02:00.75 "I want to go back to NEWSTART." 00:02:00.78\00:02:02.28 And I said, "Great idea. Let's go." 00:02:02.32\00:02:04.82 The spiritual aspect is very important as well. 00:02:04.85\00:02:09.42 Every morning at seven, 00:02:09.46\00:02:10.93 we have a session in here with the chaplain, 00:02:10.96\00:02:14.76 and I forget the chaplain's name, 00:02:14.80\00:02:17.07 I just met him, he is very good. 00:02:17.10\00:02:21.30 At the end of a session, when... 00:02:21.34\00:02:25.24 I look at my wife... 00:02:31.11\00:02:32.45 Sorry. 00:02:35.55\00:02:37.75 And she has tears 00:02:37.79\00:02:41.89 due to the message that we hear in the morning. 00:02:47.06\00:02:52.73 That in itself is worth every penny. 00:02:52.77\00:02:58.77 Welcome back, friends. 00:03:02.28\00:03:03.85 Grant Scott. 00:03:03.88\00:03:05.58 Now I've been playing with that name for a while 00:03:05.61\00:03:07.82 because I could say Scott Grant or Grant Scott, 00:03:07.85\00:03:10.89 and I know you'd answer to either but... 00:03:10.92\00:03:12.62 Yes. 00:03:12.65\00:03:14.92 You know, when you first arrived, 00:03:14.96\00:03:19.76 you came with your wife who we have not interviewed. 00:03:19.79\00:03:25.07 But nonetheless, you came to assist her, right? 00:03:25.10\00:03:28.54 Yes. 00:03:28.57\00:03:29.90 And... 00:03:29.94\00:03:31.37 But you've had some remarkable changes. 00:03:31.41\00:03:35.78 Can we talk about that? 00:03:35.81\00:03:39.08 Well, I have lost 13 pounds. Wow. 00:03:39.11\00:03:43.49 That's a remarkable change. 00:03:43.52\00:03:45.69 Where did you leave it by the way? 00:03:45.72\00:03:47.96 Pardon me. Where did you leave it? 00:03:47.99\00:03:49.89 I am just kidding. 00:03:49.92\00:03:51.26 But you ever wondered where that weight goes? 00:03:51.29\00:03:53.06 Just where is it? It's gone. 00:03:53.09\00:03:54.70 Out on a trail somewhere. Right. 00:03:54.73\00:03:56.77 Go ahead. You lost 13 pounds. 00:03:56.80\00:03:58.57 Well, and you mentioned trails, 00:03:58.60\00:04:00.44 walking trails certainly helped. 00:04:00.47\00:04:03.17 It's a combination of proper diet, exercise, rest, 00:04:03.20\00:04:08.51 drinking water, lots of water. 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.71 Yeah. 00:04:10.75\00:04:12.08 And I think that's how I lost the weight. 00:04:12.11\00:04:15.05 And of course, the challenge now is to keep up that regimen 00:04:15.08\00:04:17.55 when I go home. 00:04:17.59\00:04:18.92 So 13 pounds in 16 days? Yes. 00:04:18.95\00:04:22.42 That's almost a pound a day. 00:04:22.46\00:04:25.26 What gave that a kick start was 00:04:25.29\00:04:27.76 we had a three day fast, 00:04:27.80\00:04:30.20 and I've never been on a fast before. 00:04:30.23\00:04:36.34 I'd say it's easy because I never felt hungry. 00:04:36.37\00:04:39.51 I mean, we drank water and made a little concoction, 00:04:39.54\00:04:43.68 they called parfait, which had no taste 00:04:43.71\00:04:47.58 but that kept us going. 00:04:47.62\00:04:50.02 Right. Right. 00:04:50.05\00:04:51.39 And the other big change is 00:04:51.42\00:04:56.16 eating only two meals a day, 00:04:56.19\00:04:58.39 breakfast at eight in the morning, 00:04:58.43\00:04:59.76 and lunch at two in the afternoon, 00:04:59.79\00:05:01.16 and that's it. 00:05:01.20\00:05:03.47 And even when I wake up the next morning, 00:05:03.50\00:05:06.77 I'm not hungry. 00:05:06.80\00:05:08.74 And I thought I would be. 00:05:08.77\00:05:10.47 I thought I'd be going down the road 00:05:10.51\00:05:12.31 on my own truck looking for snacks. 00:05:12.34\00:05:16.04 It's just an amazing program, 00:05:16.08\00:05:19.31 and I think, I mentioned before when we spoke, 00:05:19.35\00:05:22.75 you know, the cost is high, 00:05:22.78\00:05:24.35 especially for Canadians with Canadian dollar being low, 00:05:24.39\00:05:27.62 but that cost is well worth it, aside from all that, 00:05:27.66\00:05:32.83 just for the Fresh Start discussions 00:05:32.86\00:05:35.36 with the chaplain in the morning. 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.17 How was the Fresh Start for you? 00:05:37.20\00:05:39.73 Did that grab you at all? 00:05:39.77\00:05:41.34 It really grabbed my wife and I. 00:05:41.37\00:05:44.67 My wife has got three years of Bible school 00:05:44.71\00:05:47.04 behind her years ago, 00:05:47.08\00:05:48.41 and we've been going to church for years 00:05:48.44\00:05:51.48 and studying the Bible, reading the Bible. 00:05:51.51\00:05:54.18 But listening to Damon Snead, the chaplain, 00:05:54.22\00:05:58.65 it was like hearing the Bible for the first time. 00:05:58.69\00:06:02.02 And 00:06:02.06\00:06:03.39 his sermons, 00:06:12.73\00:06:14.07 his teachings grabbed us so much. 00:06:14.10\00:06:18.24 We were both rebaptized 00:06:18.27\00:06:22.01 last Sabbath here. 00:06:22.04\00:06:26.18 And so there is an aspect of this program 00:06:26.21\00:06:30.42 that few people know about 00:06:30.45\00:06:32.92 and that's the spiritual component. 00:06:32.95\00:06:35.82 And folks, you are watching it now. 00:06:35.86\00:06:38.86 This is typical what happens here. 00:06:38.89\00:06:42.46 People are just taken back by this love that's shared 00:06:42.50\00:06:47.74 and the sermons certainly are important, 00:06:47.77\00:06:51.77 and Damon has a message that is just incredible. 00:06:51.81\00:06:56.28 And you are a different man. 00:06:56.31\00:06:59.41 Very much. Yeah. 00:06:59.45\00:07:02.65 When we first arrived, 00:07:02.68\00:07:04.02 we were here for four years or a little bit more. 00:07:04.05\00:07:05.39 When we first arrived on this program, 00:07:05.42\00:07:08.46 we looked at all the other folks 00:07:08.49\00:07:12.19 and I said to my wife, 00:07:12.23\00:07:14.16 "I don't know if we'll fit in with this group." 00:07:14.20\00:07:16.53 It looked kind of strange. 00:07:16.56\00:07:18.27 But we grew to know and love everyone. 00:07:18.30\00:07:22.50 They're probably saying the same thing about you. 00:07:22.54\00:07:24.67 Exactly. Yeah. 00:07:24.71\00:07:26.81 It's a very close-knit group. 00:07:26.84\00:07:28.34 Isn't that amazing how that all 00:07:28.38\00:07:29.94 just kind of melts together? 00:07:29.98\00:07:32.55 Well, when the Lord's in it, anything is possible. 00:07:32.58\00:07:36.12 Yeah. 00:07:36.15\00:07:37.49 Everything is possible. Yeah. 00:07:37.52\00:07:39.89 I'm so glad you brought that up 00:07:39.92\00:07:41.52 because it needs to be said over the airways 00:07:41.56\00:07:45.76 to people who want to come here, 00:07:45.79\00:07:48.36 they don't know that there's a spiritual component, 00:07:48.40\00:07:51.43 and you certainly has brought that out. 00:07:51.47\00:07:54.04 So were you on any medications when you got here? 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.84 No. 00:07:56.87\00:07:58.21 None? None. 00:07:58.24\00:07:59.57 So did you see the doctor? 00:07:59.61\00:08:01.21 Oh, yeah. Yeah. 00:08:01.24\00:08:02.64 We had regular visits with Dr. Gallant. 00:08:02.68\00:08:06.65 I haven't been on medication for years. 00:08:06.68\00:08:09.25 And has he given a clean bill of health? 00:08:09.28\00:08:11.55 Well, no. 00:08:11.59\00:08:12.92 No? 00:08:12.95\00:08:14.29 My blood test showed that 00:08:14.32\00:08:16.06 I was close to this disease and close to that disease, 00:08:16.09\00:08:20.60 but didn't have them. 00:08:20.63\00:08:22.00 So it was a wakeup call for me 00:08:22.03\00:08:23.93 to stick with the proper diet and exercise 00:08:23.97\00:08:27.40 to make sure I don't fall into those diseases. 00:08:27.44\00:08:30.01 So now that you've come through the program, 00:08:30.04\00:08:32.81 those are not gonna happen. 00:08:32.84\00:08:34.91 Not at all. Not at all. 00:08:34.94\00:08:36.61 Now you are good to go. 00:08:36.64\00:08:37.98 And I can guess what they are 00:08:38.01\00:08:39.98 but nonetheless, it doesn't matter. 00:08:40.02\00:08:42.45 I know by being here, 00:08:42.48\00:08:44.19 if you were pre this or pre that, that's gone 00:08:44.22\00:08:48.89 because we've seen so many people with diabetes, 00:08:48.92\00:08:51.56 and even cancers, 00:08:51.59\00:08:53.19 and people who were 00:08:53.23\00:08:56.43 on this kind of machine and that machine, 00:08:56.46\00:08:59.53 where they needed to breathe, they'll get dialysis, 00:08:59.57\00:09:02.20 get them off these machines 00:09:02.24\00:09:04.41 just because change in the lifestyle. 00:09:04.44\00:09:07.08 That's right. 00:09:07.11\00:09:08.44 And of course, wherever the Lord is present, 00:09:08.48\00:09:12.48 all things are possible, anything is possible. 00:09:12.51\00:09:16.08 Dr. Gallant... 00:09:16.12\00:09:17.55 I have a CPAP machine. 00:09:17.59\00:09:19.52 And Dr. Gallant said if I stick to this program 00:09:19.55\00:09:22.16 and the weight continues to come off, 00:09:22.19\00:09:24.43 the CPAP will also come off. 00:09:24.46\00:09:28.06 That's right. I've seen it. 00:09:28.10\00:09:30.10 Right here. With my own eyes. 00:09:30.13\00:09:33.03 Well, I'm very, very happy for you, 00:09:33.07\00:09:34.77 and I just praise the Lord that 00:09:34.80\00:09:38.27 you are who you are and what you are 00:09:38.31\00:09:41.34 and you are here with your wife, supporting her, 00:09:41.38\00:09:44.75 and the two of you were baptized, 00:09:44.78\00:09:46.41 I think that's incredible. 00:09:46.45\00:09:48.92 But we are running out of time. Okay. 00:09:48.95\00:09:52.29 But I wanna thank you for coming here 00:09:52.32\00:09:55.19 and expressing your deepest emotions. 00:09:55.22\00:09:58.59 Thank you. And God bless you, brother. 00:09:58.63\00:10:00.10 Bless you too. 00:10:00.13\00:10:01.46 I'll see you again. Yes. 00:10:01.50\00:10:02.93 Don't go away, friends, 'cause Dr. Gallant is up next. 00:10:02.96\00:10:06.70 Welcome back, friends. 00:10:40.94\00:10:42.27 We have today with us Dr. Gallant. 00:10:42.30\00:10:44.87 Dr. Gallant. 00:10:44.91\00:10:46.24 Good to see you, Pastor Snead. 00:10:46.27\00:10:47.61 How are you doing? Doing well. 00:10:47.64\00:10:48.98 We're gonna be talking a little bit about Grant. 00:10:49.01\00:10:50.88 Yes. 00:10:50.91\00:10:52.25 And he had some troubles. 00:10:52.28\00:10:53.62 He was here before, left, 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.32 and then got in a situation with his work, 00:10:56.35\00:10:58.95 gained a lot of weight, a lot of bad food, 00:10:58.99\00:11:01.79 and got in a pretty bad situation. 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.63 So what can you tell us about Grant? 00:11:03.66\00:11:05.39 Well, Grant is a great guy. 00:11:05.43\00:11:06.76 He is from the Great White North, 00:11:06.80\00:11:08.13 you know? 00:11:08.16\00:11:09.96 I grew up half of my childhood in Canada, 00:11:10.00\00:11:11.77 so I'm somewhat partial to people from Canada. 00:11:11.80\00:11:16.04 But Grant is a great guy. 00:11:16.07\00:11:19.61 He said it himself that, you know, 00:11:19.64\00:11:22.34 he came because he had fallen off the wagon. 00:11:22.38\00:11:26.05 And so he was having weight gain, 00:11:26.08\00:11:29.05 he was having some issues with his blood pressure, 00:11:29.08\00:11:31.82 and he had sleep apnea. 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.86 And coming here, 00:11:34.89\00:11:38.33 he started to get back on track, 00:11:38.36\00:11:40.26 and you could just see it in his eyes, 00:11:40.30\00:11:41.96 his eyes changed, you know, 00:11:42.00\00:11:44.23 and he is doing a lot better. 00:11:44.27\00:11:47.60 At the end of the program, he really had lost weight, 00:11:47.64\00:11:51.47 and he was feeling better, he could exercise more, 00:11:51.51\00:11:55.18 he also was starting to sleep better at night, 00:11:55.21\00:11:58.05 the sleep apnea was not as much of a problem. 00:11:58.08\00:12:01.82 So praise the Lord for that. 00:12:01.85\00:12:03.49 Yeah, so losing the weight had a big factor 00:12:03.52\00:12:06.05 and getting exercise. 00:12:06.09\00:12:07.42 I know his job 00:12:07.46\00:12:08.79 where he was working a way up, you know, 00:12:08.82\00:12:10.86 was keeping him from being mobile, isn't it? 00:12:10.89\00:12:13.53 And can that be a problem 00:12:13.56\00:12:15.96 with people not being able to sleep well? 00:12:16.00\00:12:18.00 Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:12:18.03\00:12:19.73 There is a lot of evidence that shows that 00:12:19.77\00:12:21.44 if you get regular exercise during the day, 00:12:21.47\00:12:24.14 not right before you go to bed, 00:12:24.17\00:12:26.24 it helps you to sleep better at night. 00:12:26.27\00:12:28.41 Your body gets tired physically, 00:12:28.44\00:12:31.15 but you also have changes 00:12:31.18\00:12:32.55 in the chemicals, the hormones in your body, 00:12:32.58\00:12:35.52 and that helps you to sleep better at night. 00:12:35.55\00:12:38.92 His poor sleeping actually had an impact on his wife. 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.36 It kept his wife awake at night. 00:12:42.39\00:12:44.69 Oh, very good point. Yeah. 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.59 And so when he started sleeping better, 00:12:46.63\00:12:48.50 she was very happy 00:12:48.53\00:12:49.86 because she could sleep better as well. 00:12:49.90\00:12:51.40 Oh, yeah, so you see, that affects all kind of stuff. 00:12:51.43\00:12:53.27 Yeah, absolutely. 00:12:53.30\00:12:54.64 Now something about where he worked, 00:12:54.67\00:12:56.17 the part of the world where he worked, 00:12:56.20\00:12:57.54 was there an issue with daylight and sunlight 00:12:57.57\00:13:00.24 and stuff like that? 00:13:00.28\00:13:01.61 Absolutely. Absolutely. Absolutely. 00:13:01.64\00:13:02.98 So he was in the Arctic, the very far north. 00:13:03.01\00:13:05.28 And they don't have 00:13:05.31\00:13:07.78 the same daylight and nighttime as we do. 00:13:07.82\00:13:11.82 In parts of the winter, there is very little daylight. 00:13:11.85\00:13:16.39 And then in parts of that area during the summer, 00:13:16.42\00:13:19.86 there is an abundance of daylight 00:13:19.89\00:13:21.70 where they only have a little bit of darkness. 00:13:21.73\00:13:23.73 And the light affects our sleep patterns. 00:13:23.77\00:13:27.54 It affects our melatonin and our serotonin. 00:13:27.57\00:13:31.34 Melatonin is more of a nighttime hormone, 00:13:31.37\00:13:33.41 and serotonin is more of a daytime hormone. 00:13:33.44\00:13:36.28 And when you are not getting 00:13:36.31\00:13:37.98 the right light at the right time, 00:13:38.01\00:13:40.72 it makes it hard to be healthy. 00:13:40.75\00:13:42.65 And so that affected his sleep. 00:13:42.68\00:13:45.42 And then being up there where it's so cold 00:13:45.45\00:13:47.79 and there is all kinds of wildlife, 00:13:47.82\00:13:49.62 he couldn't exercise and walk like 00:13:49.66\00:13:52.29 he needed to and should have. 00:13:52.33\00:13:54.16 And so that impacted his health 00:13:54.20\00:13:56.20 and impacted his weight gain as well. 00:13:56.23\00:13:58.37 Yeah, so it sounded like 00:13:58.40\00:13:59.73 he had a lot of things going on. 00:13:59.77\00:14:01.67 No exercise, poor nutrition, 00:14:01.70\00:14:05.37 the light problems, and so he gets here, 00:14:05.41\00:14:08.68 and all of these things, 00:14:08.71\00:14:10.05 he starts learning to do all over again. 00:14:10.08\00:14:11.91 He is getting the right amount of sunlight 00:14:11.95\00:14:13.58 but at the right time. 00:14:13.62\00:14:14.95 Amen. 00:14:14.98\00:14:16.32 He is getting the nutrition, he is getting the exercise, 00:14:16.35\00:14:19.59 and then a few other things. 00:14:19.62\00:14:20.99 Right. 00:14:21.02\00:14:22.36 So his body just starts going back 00:14:22.39\00:14:23.79 to its normal position what it should be. 00:14:23.83\00:14:26.63 Yeah, exactly. 00:14:26.66\00:14:28.00 And he did... 00:14:28.03\00:14:29.96 You know, he started to make these simple changes 00:14:30.00\00:14:32.83 and he started to see results fairly quickly, 00:14:32.87\00:14:35.14 which is a blessing. 00:14:35.17\00:14:37.11 And so I am just thankful that 00:14:37.14\00:14:41.08 he had a good experience while he was here, 00:14:41.11\00:14:44.18 and you also played a role in his healing. 00:14:44.21\00:14:47.25 Yeah, that's the spiritual component of it. 00:14:50.25\00:14:51.92 That's right. 00:14:51.95\00:14:53.29 Because spiritual is so important 00:14:53.32\00:14:55.09 with the physical healing. 00:14:55.12\00:14:57.09 And I believe that the spiritual component 00:14:57.13\00:15:00.00 is the part that keeps people on track 00:15:00.03\00:15:03.40 when they leave here. 00:15:03.43\00:15:04.77 Right, and that's a big thing with him 00:15:04.80\00:15:06.13 because he's going back to work. 00:15:06.17\00:15:08.44 I'm hoping he doesn't go back to work. 00:15:08.47\00:15:10.14 Was he thinking of retiring? He was thinking about it. 00:15:10.17\00:15:12.11 I'm hoping he doesn't go back to work 'cause being up there, 00:15:12.14\00:15:15.14 being away for months at a time, 00:15:15.18\00:15:18.58 not being with his wife, 00:15:18.61\00:15:20.98 all of that, I don't think is ideal. 00:15:21.02\00:15:23.08 No, it's not ideal. 00:15:23.12\00:15:24.72 You know, but a lot of men and even women 00:15:24.75\00:15:28.36 have this problem 00:15:28.39\00:15:29.72 where work is the driving force, 00:15:29.76\00:15:32.33 it throws everything else out of whack. 00:15:32.36\00:15:34.56 So what would you suggest to people 00:15:34.60\00:15:36.20 whose work is really interfering in their life 00:15:36.23\00:15:39.10 in so many levels like this? 00:15:39.13\00:15:42.37 NEWSTART has two Ts. 00:15:42.40\00:15:44.34 The first T actually stands for temperance. 00:15:44.37\00:15:47.14 So temperance means 00:15:47.18\00:15:48.51 we have to have a level of balance. 00:15:48.54\00:15:52.45 And I'm guilty of this at times myself. 00:15:52.48\00:15:56.22 We can overwork and put aside some of these principles 00:15:56.25\00:16:00.46 that are so important for our health.` 00:16:00.49\00:16:02.79 And then when we do that, 00:16:02.82\00:16:04.16 we reap the consequences of our choices. 00:16:04.19\00:16:07.53 And so it's really important to try to maintain balance. 00:16:07.56\00:16:09.93 And I suggested to him that 00:16:09.96\00:16:11.30 if he did have to go back to work, 00:16:11.33\00:16:13.50 because he says he's retired two or three times already, 00:16:13.54\00:16:16.60 but if he does have to go back to work, 00:16:16.64\00:16:18.74 maybe try to find ways 00:16:18.77\00:16:20.71 to incorporate these principles into what he's doing, 00:16:20.74\00:16:23.75 so it's not as harmful, not as dangerous, 00:16:23.78\00:16:26.88 and maybe take his wife with him 00:16:26.92\00:16:28.75 and so they can be supportive for each other 00:16:28.78\00:16:31.75 at the same time. 00:16:31.79\00:16:33.12 Yeah, because food can become our friend, 00:16:33.15\00:16:34.76 our comfort really quick. 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.12 Absolutely. 00:16:36.16\00:16:37.49 No spouse, no wife, 00:16:37.53\00:16:38.86 all these other miserable things going on. 00:16:38.89\00:16:40.43 And you can default to that so quickly. 00:16:40.46\00:16:42.40 Well, he put on 30 pounds. 00:16:42.43\00:16:43.77 Yeah. Yeah. 00:16:43.80\00:16:45.13 So you know, and that's not good. 00:16:45.17\00:16:47.77 So yeah, I think it's important 00:16:47.80\00:16:50.11 that he maintain balance at whatever he's doing, 00:16:50.14\00:16:52.94 whether it's just being at home 00:16:52.97\00:16:54.31 or he has to go back up north. 00:16:54.34\00:16:56.48 He said there was gonna be a break 00:16:56.51\00:16:58.55 before there would be an opportunity for him 00:16:58.58\00:17:01.32 to go back up north. 00:17:01.35\00:17:02.68 So I think that's good 00:17:02.72\00:17:04.05 that he can kind of reestablish the principles, 00:17:04.09\00:17:05.85 both of them will have them in their household, 00:17:05.89\00:17:08.02 and I think that's important. 00:17:08.06\00:17:09.99 But, you know, he needs to be careful 00:17:10.03\00:17:13.73 if he's going back up there for work. 00:17:13.76\00:17:15.53 Dr. Gallant, we are out of time. 00:17:15.56\00:17:16.90 We appreciate you so much. God bless, friend. 00:17:16.93\00:17:18.77 God bless you too, pastor. And it's good to talk to you. 00:17:18.80\00:17:21.40 Don't go away, friends. We'll be right back. 00:17:21.44\00:17:23.34 Welcome back, friends. 00:17:26.51\00:17:27.84 Help me welcome the real Pastor Snead. 00:17:27.88\00:17:33.05 We keep changing chairs here. Yeah. 00:17:33.08\00:17:36.38 You know? Well, I'm over here now. 00:17:36.42\00:17:37.82 I know you're over there. 00:17:37.85\00:17:39.35 I think that's a tougher chair to be in. 00:17:39.39\00:17:41.02 Maybe so. 00:17:41.06\00:17:42.39 'Cause all I got to do is ask questions. 00:17:42.42\00:17:44.66 But we don't wanna confuse anybody watching, 00:17:44.69\00:17:47.30 you were actually over here. That's right. 00:17:47.33\00:17:49.53 Now you're over there. Now I am over here. 00:17:49.56\00:17:51.17 So now you're a pastor. 00:17:51.20\00:17:52.53 That's right. Okay. 00:17:52.57\00:17:54.24 Let's talk about this gentleman. 00:17:54.27\00:17:56.60 We know that 00:17:56.64\00:17:58.87 he'd been up north, way up north. 00:17:58.91\00:18:02.34 What happened? 00:18:02.38\00:18:03.71 I mean, basically, how did he end up here? 00:18:03.75\00:18:05.88 Well, he's in a pretty good shape of a guy, right? 00:18:05.91\00:18:08.92 He's an older guy but was in good shape. 00:18:08.95\00:18:11.85 But years and years of working up north, 00:18:11.89\00:18:15.26 you get up there and... 00:18:15.29\00:18:16.62 Those are the kind of places 00:18:16.66\00:18:17.99 that you take advantage of the time 00:18:18.03\00:18:19.69 'cause there's nothing going on up there, 00:18:19.73\00:18:21.46 so you just work, work, work, 00:18:21.50\00:18:23.10 shift work, many, many hours, 00:18:23.13\00:18:24.93 and what happened was he just overworked himself, 00:18:24.97\00:18:28.50 and that overworking, that intemperance in working 00:18:28.54\00:18:31.24 which is one of the NEWSTART principles, 00:18:31.27\00:18:32.81 temperance, goes for work. 00:18:32.84\00:18:35.44 And he's in one of these typical situations 00:18:35.48\00:18:37.35 where men just work themselves to death, 00:18:37.38\00:18:40.28 and that bled over into all kind of areas of his life. 00:18:40.32\00:18:43.75 Spiritually, physically, mentally, 00:18:43.79\00:18:48.46 we're talking about all of this, right? 00:18:48.49\00:18:49.96 Right, that's one of his testimonies. 00:18:49.99\00:18:51.89 Right. 00:18:51.93\00:18:53.26 The first thing that he recognized was his weight, 00:18:53.29\00:18:55.53 so the physical aspect. 00:18:55.56\00:18:56.90 He has put on some pounds. And this is the thing. 00:18:56.93\00:18:58.93 Just because you're working and, you know, 00:18:58.97\00:19:00.84 we come home from work, we're tired, 00:19:00.87\00:19:02.50 we've been up all day long, 00:19:02.54\00:19:03.87 but that doesn't necessarily mean 00:19:03.91\00:19:05.24 you're getting the kind of physical activity you need, 00:19:05.27\00:19:07.34 and that's what we've seen with him. 00:19:07.38\00:19:08.88 His weight begins to bulge in, 00:19:08.91\00:19:11.48 he's up there overworking, 00:19:11.51\00:19:12.88 so food becomes comforting friend, 00:19:12.91\00:19:14.68 and so he just, it spirals out of control with him, 00:19:14.72\00:19:17.45 and that's what happened. 00:19:17.49\00:19:18.82 That's how he came back here, 00:19:18.85\00:19:20.19 overweight, burned out mentally, 00:19:20.22\00:19:21.99 and then also spiritually, 00:19:22.02\00:19:23.36 he found himself in spiritually bad condition 00:19:23.39\00:19:27.63 as he was physically. 00:19:27.66\00:19:29.46 And how is it that you were able to... 00:19:29.50\00:19:32.43 What do you do exactly 00:19:32.47\00:19:34.30 that helps these folks turn around, 00:19:34.34\00:19:36.94 you know, like him, specifically? 00:19:36.97\00:19:39.74 Well, with these guys and anyone in this situation, 00:19:39.77\00:19:42.38 I always tell them my first night 00:19:42.41\00:19:44.55 that the principles you're gonna learn for health 00:19:44.58\00:19:47.35 are going to stick better if you understand 00:19:47.38\00:19:50.15 the spiritual aspects of things. 00:19:50.19\00:19:52.05 And I just simply am taking people through a good revival, 00:19:52.09\00:19:58.69 understanding the gospel, 00:19:58.73\00:20:00.06 which would include not only the power of God to save us 00:20:00.10\00:20:03.50 eternally into His kingdom but 00:20:03.53\00:20:05.07 that transformative power of God that comes as a gift, 00:20:05.10\00:20:08.94 as a promise of the Holy Spirit. 00:20:08.97\00:20:10.51 And that's what people need 00:20:10.54\00:20:11.87 because of the weakness of our flesh, 00:20:11.91\00:20:13.48 our nature's falling, 00:20:13.51\00:20:15.24 it's just natural proclivity of ours when we burn out, 00:20:15.28\00:20:18.41 tired, stressed from overwork, 00:20:18.45\00:20:20.38 it's just a natural desire to go to food and to eat 00:20:20.42\00:20:23.18 and not exercise and just lay around 00:20:23.22\00:20:25.19 and watch TV and to make ourselves feel better. 00:20:25.22\00:20:27.66 And so we need the power of God to come into our mind 00:20:27.69\00:20:31.46 and snap us out of that, so to speak. 00:20:31.49\00:20:33.76 And so when he gets here, he realizes that. 00:20:33.80\00:20:36.43 Yeah, his health is getting better, 00:20:36.46\00:20:37.93 he's doing the eight NEWSTART principles, 00:20:37.97\00:20:40.17 and his weight's coming down, the numbers are dropping, 00:20:40.20\00:20:42.44 but then he realizes that 00:20:42.47\00:20:44.01 the spiritual is the main issue with him. 00:20:44.04\00:20:47.18 He needed to be reconnected to God 00:20:47.21\00:20:50.21 in the way to help him with his physical problems. 00:20:50.25\00:20:53.65 So you've given him hope, 00:20:53.68\00:20:56.15 where when he got here, he was at the end of the rope, 00:20:56.18\00:20:59.52 so to speak, thinking he was dying, literally, 00:20:59.55\00:21:04.06 maybe he didn't know spiritually. 00:21:04.09\00:21:06.26 But he could tell through physical ailments 00:21:06.29\00:21:09.76 that he was not doing good. 00:21:09.80\00:21:11.73 Would that be pretty much... Yeah, sure. 00:21:11.77\00:21:14.07 And he realized that 00:21:14.10\00:21:15.54 the physical was but a shadow of the spiritual, 00:21:15.57\00:21:17.77 and he was one of the ones who was rebaptized. 00:21:17.81\00:21:19.97 Right. 00:21:20.01\00:21:21.34 And really felt this connection with God, 00:21:21.38\00:21:24.75 and had this hope, I like the word. 00:21:24.78\00:21:26.58 I always start off with hope. 00:21:26.61\00:21:27.95 He had this hope that he's got to go back 00:21:27.98\00:21:31.75 'cause he was going back to work again, 00:21:31.79\00:21:33.22 he was thinking about retiring, but he's going back in. 00:21:33.25\00:21:36.96 But now he can go back realizing that 00:21:36.99\00:21:39.26 he doesn't have to do things the way he's done. 00:21:39.29\00:21:41.16 He can take these principles, implement them, 00:21:41.20\00:21:43.67 and even in an extreme condition of work 00:21:43.70\00:21:45.73 like his kind of work, 00:21:45.77\00:21:48.77 he can still keep the physical in its right perspective, 00:21:48.80\00:21:53.54 but he'll do it now through spiritual, 00:21:53.58\00:21:56.01 through relying on God to help him. 00:21:56.04\00:21:58.81 And relying on God's power, 00:21:58.85\00:22:00.48 you know, we talk about the battle 00:22:00.52\00:22:01.85 between the flesh and the spirit, 00:22:01.88\00:22:03.22 you know, towards the end of our time together, 00:22:03.25\00:22:05.45 and how God can come in 00:22:05.49\00:22:06.99 and override the flesh's desire, 00:22:07.02\00:22:09.79 the spirit can say, "Hey, put that down," 00:22:09.82\00:22:11.59 or "Hey, get up and go walk," or "Hey..." 00:22:11.63\00:22:14.00 You know, and he realized the importance of that, 00:22:14.03\00:22:16.26 and I think he's gonna benefit greatly from it. 00:22:16.30\00:22:18.37 I know. That's great. 00:22:18.40\00:22:20.00 You know, we're just about out of time. 00:22:20.04\00:22:21.87 But I wanted to thank you for two things. 00:22:21.90\00:22:24.34 For being here for this interview, 00:22:24.37\00:22:26.34 and for taking my place for the previous one. 00:22:26.37\00:22:29.91 Friends, don't go away. 00:22:29.94\00:22:31.35 We got something to show you. 00:22:31.38\00:22:32.71 Welcome to Weimar Institute Research. 00:22:35.72\00:22:38.45 Glad you've joined us today. 00:22:38.49\00:22:40.29 And with me is the Director of Weimar Institute Research, 00:22:40.32\00:22:44.26 and also teaching research methods at the college, 00:22:44.29\00:22:47.20 Dr. Eddie Ramirez. 00:22:47.23\00:22:49.60 And this is a nice study 00:22:49.63\00:22:51.40 where we collaborate with some international researchers. 00:22:51.43\00:22:55.70 And this particular analysis actually helps us to realize 00:22:55.74\00:23:02.34 that tobacco is a little more dangerous than 00:23:02.38\00:23:04.91 we thought of for the mind. 00:23:04.95\00:23:06.61 That's right. 00:23:06.65\00:23:07.98 We've known that tobacco is not good for the arteries, 00:23:08.02\00:23:10.69 it's not good for the lungs, it's not good for the liver, 00:23:10.72\00:23:14.19 and kidneys even for that matter, 00:23:14.22\00:23:16.79 but it really hasn't been looked at 00:23:16.83\00:23:18.89 in regards to that much related to mental health. 00:23:18.93\00:23:23.70 But first of all, Dr. Ramirez, 00:23:23.73\00:23:28.10 tell us about this study and who was studied. 00:23:28.14\00:23:31.97 That's right. 00:23:32.01\00:23:33.34 We were seeing 00:23:33.38\00:23:35.74 what relationship does tobacco use have on depression, 00:23:35.78\00:23:41.05 and what happens after the people participate 00:23:41.08\00:23:44.42 of an eight-week mental education program, 00:23:44.45\00:23:48.12 what happens to their level of tobacco usage, 00:23:48.16\00:23:50.79 and what happens to their level of mental health. 00:23:50.83\00:23:54.00 Okay. 00:23:54.03\00:23:55.36 So they're coming to 00:23:55.40\00:23:57.07 a depression and anxiety recovery program 00:23:57.10\00:24:00.00 which is just once a week for eight weeks, 00:24:00.04\00:24:02.20 a mental health program, 00:24:02.24\00:24:03.77 and they're taking a little assessment 00:24:03.81\00:24:07.04 at the beginning. 00:24:07.08\00:24:08.41 And one of the things that we're assessing 00:24:08.44\00:24:10.68 is their tobacco usage. 00:24:10.71\00:24:12.68 That's right. 00:24:12.71\00:24:14.05 And so what did we find out? 00:24:14.08\00:24:15.58 How many of them were using tobacco, 00:24:15.62\00:24:18.72 and what did it do to their mental health? 00:24:18.75\00:24:20.62 That's right. 00:24:20.66\00:24:21.99 We found out that from 5,621 people, 00:24:22.02\00:24:28.43 456 were using tobacco products. 00:24:28.46\00:24:32.60 Okay. 00:24:32.63\00:24:33.97 And did we compare them 00:24:34.00\00:24:36.91 with the ones who were not using tobacco products? 00:24:36.94\00:24:38.27 That's right. 00:24:38.31\00:24:39.64 We compared them against those 00:24:39.67\00:24:41.01 that were not using tobacco products. 00:24:41.04\00:24:43.08 If you were using tobacco products, 00:24:43.11\00:24:44.85 your depression was 16 points, 00:24:44.88\00:24:47.55 almost to the severe type of depression 00:24:47.58\00:24:50.79 compared to those that were not using the tobacco products, 00:24:50.82\00:24:53.96 on average, at the beginning, it was of 12. 00:24:53.99\00:24:56.93 So there was a big difference in their mental health. 00:24:56.96\00:24:59.63 Significant worsening really of depression. 00:24:59.66\00:25:03.10 And anxiety also. And anxiety also. 00:25:03.13\00:25:05.90 So you measured anxiety as well. 00:25:05.93\00:25:07.74 So it's interesting because many times 00:25:07.77\00:25:09.40 the smoker uses it to deal with their anxiety, 00:25:09.44\00:25:13.44 yet, if they're using tobacco, 00:25:13.48\00:25:16.04 their anxiety is actually moderate levels 00:25:16.08\00:25:19.61 while those that are not using the tobacco 00:25:19.65\00:25:22.08 at the beginning had mild levels of anxiety. 00:25:22.12\00:25:24.99 It's one of these classic things 00:25:25.02\00:25:26.89 where the people think 00:25:26.92\00:25:28.46 what's helping them is actually hurting them 00:25:28.49\00:25:31.13 because it seems to help them short-term, 00:25:31.16\00:25:33.93 but they don't recognize 00:25:33.96\00:25:35.30 what it's doing long-term to their brain chemistry. 00:25:35.33\00:25:37.93 And so many people smoke tobacco 00:25:37.97\00:25:40.84 in order to feel calm and relaxed, 00:25:40.87\00:25:43.37 but in reality, 00:25:43.41\00:25:44.77 they are actually getting rid of some brain chemicals 00:25:44.81\00:25:47.81 that can help them feel calm and relaxed. 00:25:47.84\00:25:50.81 And as a result, their anxiety levels go up long-term 00:25:50.85\00:25:55.48 as well as their depression levels. 00:25:55.52\00:25:57.69 So during the course of the eight weeks, 00:25:57.72\00:25:59.95 what happened? 00:25:59.99\00:26:01.32 So we have focused on helping them, 00:26:01.36\00:26:04.96 giving tools so they can overcome addictions. 00:26:04.99\00:26:08.30 And even though this is not a smoking succession program, 00:26:08.33\00:26:11.73 we actually got rates similar to 00:26:11.77\00:26:14.37 a smoking succession program. 00:26:14.40\00:26:17.44 By the end of the program, 00:26:17.47\00:26:19.87 from those 556 people that were using it, by the end, 00:26:19.91\00:26:25.38 98 had decided to stop using the tobacco products. 00:26:25.41\00:26:29.22 Okay, so significant amount. 00:26:29.25\00:26:31.15 And you're right, that's actually equal or above 00:26:31.19\00:26:34.69 a program that would just be utilized 00:26:34.72\00:26:36.89 to help them quit smoking. 00:26:36.93\00:26:38.99 But by giving them mental health program, 00:26:39.03\00:26:42.56 not only were the rates the same 00:26:42.60\00:26:44.20 as going to one of those programs of quitting smoking, 00:26:44.23\00:26:47.40 but their depression and anxiety improved. 00:26:47.44\00:26:49.77 Is that right? That's right. 00:26:49.80\00:26:51.14 By the end of the program, their depression level, 00:26:51.17\00:26:53.98 if you were able to quit smoking, 00:26:54.01\00:26:56.11 was on the border between non and mild, 00:26:56.14\00:26:59.45 while if you continue using the smoke product, 00:26:59.48\00:27:01.98 you did get some benefits from the program, 00:27:02.02\00:27:04.02 but your depression is gonna be at the mild level. 00:27:04.05\00:27:06.76 Okay, so significant improvement 00:27:06.79\00:27:08.86 if they quit smoking, 00:27:08.89\00:27:10.46 and they quit that addiction during the program. 00:27:10.49\00:27:12.36 Lot of people think, 00:27:12.39\00:27:13.73 "Hey, their anxiety level's gonna get worse. 00:27:13.76\00:27:15.53 I am coming to help my anxiety, I don't need to quit smoking." 00:27:15.56\00:27:18.87 But those who did quit smoking, 00:27:18.90\00:27:20.84 experienced significant improvement 00:27:20.87\00:27:22.97 in their depression and anxiety. 00:27:23.00\00:27:24.57 And anxiety levels, it went from six. 00:27:24.61\00:27:28.18 If you quit smoking, it went down to five 00:27:28.21\00:27:31.11 which is non-depression. 00:27:31.15\00:27:33.05 And if you continue using the tobacco products, 00:27:33.08\00:27:35.05 it's gonna be on six which is a mild anxiety. 00:27:35.08\00:27:38.52 Now was this published? 00:27:38.55\00:27:39.89 This was published in 00:27:39.92\00:27:41.82 Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetic journal. 00:27:41.86\00:27:46.16 Okay. 00:27:46.19\00:27:47.53 And one of the students from Weimar was our... 00:27:47.56\00:27:51.57 One of them, you know, processing data 00:27:51.60\00:27:53.40 and writing things up and so forth. 00:27:53.44\00:27:55.47 Great. 00:27:55.50\00:27:56.84 And so we appreciate what you are teaching the world 00:27:56.87\00:28:00.78 through this data analysis, Dr. Ramirez, 00:28:00.81\00:28:03.58 as real lives have changed for the better. 00:28:03.61\00:28:06.11 And we thank you for tuning in. 00:28:06.15\00:28:07.85 And join us next time for Weimar Institute Research. 00:28:07.88\00:28:10.85
